Great for these types of students

The school is great for anyone. NO matter what your degree is, you will be able to have fun, as well as find time to study and pass your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready to have fun. Don't come here feeling like you want be able to succeed. If you believe in yourself, so will everyone else.

    Bang for the buck

It is worth the money. It may be expensive, but all colleges are. The good side of the paying for school here is that you get your money's worth. They ensure that the campus stays live, and that students are safe any where they go.

    Am enjoying being here

I love going to the school. Living on campus is a great experience for anyone. No matter how much you think you want to live off campus, it is fun living on campus. The enviroment helps students study, and stay focus on shool. Being a student who stays on campus lets you get the real feel of college.

    Am learning a lot

The school is a good place to go and get your degree. I am studying Business. The classes are harder for this major than other majors. There is a lot of writing and reading. However, the teachers are extremely nice, and they are very helpful. They do not like for students to fail. They will go out there way to help you as long as you give effort in trying to succeed. I thought I was a good writer, until I started writing in college. The teachers helped me identify what areas I needed help with, and how to improve those areas. I am learning more than I ever thought I could learn. The school also helps you by giving outside help on campus to ensure you pass all your classes. I have learned more about science in my first year of school than I have in all of my educational years combined. They also offer subjects in areas that I really like, which encourages me to continue taking extra courses and minor in more than just one field I enjoy. The school is helping me learn alot bout not only academic things, but also about myself and life.

UNM is perfect for almost all students. UNM offers a large variety of degress that suit just about everyones interests.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are at all interested in UNM, I urge you to take a campus tour, and apply. I also urge you to find and apply for any scholarship you can find.

    Bang for the buck

UNM has very competitive tuition rates for both in state and out of state students. I am from New Mexico and initially wanted to go out of state. I applied for several schools in Oregon and was accepted to all of them with scholarships. I soon realized that because of New Mexico's lottery scholarship, UNM was by far the best bang for my buck. UNM also led me through the loan application for the small amount that I do need. UNM is not just for in state students though. UNM is very affordable for out of state students. I know many out of state students who chose UNM because it was cheaper than their local universities. UNM offers many scholarships to out of state students including a full ride regents scholarship. Even though UNM is very affordable, it is by no means a second hand school. UNM has top of the line professors and has several nationally ranked degree programs. UNM class rooms sport excellent technology to aid in learning. All classrooms have at least one protector, DVD player, and computer. Computer pods are scattered around campus with excellent processors and 22 monitors. Laptops are available for rent and several of UNM's libraries as well. UNM is very affordable but compromises nowhere.

    Am enjoying being here

As I mentioned the educational side of UNM is second to none. I think the other main aspect of a college that is taken into account when deciding where to attend is the campus and livability. UNM has a beautiful campus, filled with trees and grass. UNM even has a duck pond with a waterfall and dozens of ducks located in the center of campus. It is a joy to walk or ride my bike to classes because of the terrific scenery. Even when not going to class I often go for an afternoon bike ride just for the scenery.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot here at UNM. They are a top of the line school with excellent professors, GAs, and TAs. UNM has managed to find some of the mos interesting and qualified professors, GAs, and TAs. Last semester I took Philosophy 101 with Ethan Mills. He is a graduate student at UNM and teaches a few classes in the philosophy department. He has written a chapter in Steven Colbert's book I am America, and so can you. He made the class interesting and fun to many students (like myself) who have no interest in philosophy and were dreading the class. Ethan Mills is just one example, all of UNM's faculty are of his caliper, which makes attending UNM an educational and pleasureful activity.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips for new students: *Make sure your at the classroom 15min before class starts. Especially if you have a class with 400-800 students enrolled. *Take advantage of study groups, tutors and professors help. *Lastly, make sure to be organized and review all your notes throughout the semester...it helps for mid-terms and finals.

    Bang for the buck

UNM is worth every penny! Plus if you receive a 2.5 GPA or higher you will receive the lottery scholarship... guaranteed! Trust me... it helps!!!

    Am enjoying being here

UNM is a great place to open up; meet new friends, learn to be responsible, and start life on your own.

    Am learning a lot

The University of New Mexico has provided me with helpful tips, tutors, study groups and well educated staff that makes learning fun and challenging.

Great for these types of students

    Pre-medicine for sure.

    Tips for prospective students

Find out about scholarships ahead of time, make sure you know the different deadlines, meet your teachers, and get involved as much as you can, because that enhances your college experiences.

    Bang for the buck

Hmmm I am out of state and it is too much sometimes for certain services like the dorms. Yet, I do like my dorm.

    Am enjoying being here

This is a small campus, but I really enjoy walking around. Plus, everyday you can meet someone new who might end up being a new friend. Also in order to enjoy any college, you need to get involved.

    Am learning a lot

This school has different subjects that one can learn about, it just depends on who wants to learn and how dedicated they are. I certainly love the dance classes and language, but I am horrified of the math ones. It just takes time to know how to study. Also make sure you communicate with your teachers, they usually can help you with any problems.

Great for these types of students

Undergraduate and Graduate Medicine students should definately check this school out because it's worth the time. Those fields are what UNM is known for.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure it has everything you want or you will be supremely dissappointed. Go visit the campus more than once. Check out the food and the dorms. See what activities are happening there all the time.

    Will enjoy being here

Make sure you do your research first! If not, you'll be miserable.

    Will learn a lot

It all depends on the field you want to go in to. UNM is great for pre-med. In fact they're known for it. But I want to go into Animal Sciences and the closest program they have for that is a straight Biology program.

Whatever you want to study, I guarantee that UNM offers it. Whether you are interested in Law School, Medical School, or anything else your heart desires, you will find it at the University of New Mexico.

    Tips for prospective students

Do well in high school. Although admission standards are not real high to gain admittance to UNM, do your best before you get here. College is different from high school and your time is not as planned making what time you have valuable. Finally, get involved when you get here to UNM. College is a fun and new experience, and getting involved will make it even better!

    Bang for the buck

The University of New Mexico is a wonderful institution for a very great price. It is not often anymore that you find a top tier school with wonderful financial opportunities. If you decide to attend the University of New Mexico for your undergraduate or graduate years, you need not worry about struggling to pay for school.

    Am enjoying being here

The University of New Mexico is such a fun atmosphere. You will meet some of the best friends of your life. There is always something to do on campus, whether it be getting involved in one of the many organizations, a fraternity or a sorority, exploring the rich cultural city of Albuquerque, or checking out the spirited Lobo athletic squads. Whatever you decide to do, you will definitely enjoy to be a Lobo, as I am now.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot from all of my classes at the University of New Mexico. All of the professors do their best to make themselves accessible to students even in the large class sizes. The classes have offered me a new and fresh perspective to many current issues and they have opened my eyes to many new opportunities.

New Mexicans from arounf the state. Those that believe New Mexico is apart of Mexico. Liberals and the Consevatives. International students

    Tips for prospective students

If one is a New Mexico resident and has the required gpa and act scores then for sure they will get in. The benefits of having at least a 2.5 gpa in a NM high school one gets the Bridge to Success scholarship which is used for the first semester until the second semester's Legislative Lottery Scholarship. Unm is absolutely beautiful in my opinion and, my opinion once again, stays cooler than the rest of the city. If attending get a city bus pass which is free to unm students which ave money big time and helps out the enviroment. Albuquerque is great city if you have an open heart.

Anyone can succeed here if they are willing to ask for help. There are many resources available for any student.

    Tips for prospective students

Double check what your academic advisers say. They know about their own department, but they are useless when it comes to financial aid. Go talk to the financial aid office if you have questions about that, or you may lose your scholarships because of misinformation. Also, get into your major's college as soon as possible. You'll have better advisers then.

    Bang for the buck

If you are a resident of NM then UNM is almost completely free for you. I've spent maybe $200 total in tuition and fees for my first two semesters here. Getting one other scholarship means your books are covered too. Technically, because of my other scholarship, I have yet to spend a dime.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a beautiful campus, but they do not enforce their non-smoking policy very well, so its beauty is marred by cancer sticks and their users. The teachers are usually very helpful, and the dean takes complaints seriously. The Zimm library on campus is an amazing resource and a great placed to study.

    Am learning a lot

UNM pushes a lot of self responsibility, so I have learned quite a bit about how to mind my own finances and career goals. It does offer support though, so it's not like they just abandon you. You just have to be responsible enough to go and get the help yourself. The classes are also usually taught by good teachers, and there are many learning opportunities about campus.

This university is great for students who are looking to better themselves and get a great education. The university has a lot to offer, not only in academics but in extra cirricular activities as well. This university is well rounded and has something to offer for every type of student.

    Tips for prospective students

I encourage students to look into this college and take a tour of the campus. The tours are really an eye opener of how great the campus is and they are also very resourceful.

    Bang for the buck

We all know college is expensive, but UNM is reasonable. I feel that the education you receive at this university is well worth the money, especially if you are a New Mexico resident. New Mexico residents are eligible for the Lottery Scholarship which covers the cost of tuition. So if you are a New Mexico resident I really suggest you looking into UNM.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is absolutely gorgeous. If you want to surround yourself in a beautiful environment UNM is the place for you. Albuquerque is a quiet little city and a great place to live. I grew up here all my life and I love it.

    Am learning a lot

The professors at this university are really great. They are always willing to help and they really make an effort to ensure students are receiving the education they deserve. The classes are intriguing and leave students wanting to learn more and take control of their learning.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who enjoys an open campus, with a whole lot of college student populating the surrounding area. The people are quite fun to be around, and there are many of the draws of a big city. I think it's the perfect starter city for anyone looking to live in a metropolis one day.

    Tips for prospective students

There are two areas were great improvement is needed. One is the parking situation, and the other is the University Advisement office. Parking is horendous, but there is no way around it. I can only provide a warning. They are strict about enforcing parking violations, and you have to pay over one hundred and fifty dollars to park anywere close to campus. A permit for a lot further away will cost you less, but with the hords of students going to class at the same times the shuttles often move at snail pace. The University Advisemnt Office is another issue, but after your core curriculum is finished you no longer have to deal with them. The issues here are long waits to even see an advisor, different information from different advisers, and they make you follow a flawed process in order to register.

    Bang for the buck

I am a resident of New Mexico, so i pay next to nothing for tuition(less than $3,000 a year). I am unsure on how much non-resident tuition costs, but i have heard it is still pretty low.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus. It is truly beautiful. There are many different designs for the buildings, and the whole campus is covered in trees. Almost every building is different, and the people follow that pattern. There are so many people to meet, and in my experience most are just as friendly as your willing to be. Great environment.

    Am learning a lot

There are so many fields to choose from it is hard to be sure the school you have chosen is right one. I am currently a sophomore majoring in Environmental Science and Mass Communication. I am just getting into the classes needed for my major, but i can discuss the core classes I have taken thus far. Many of the entry level classes are just that, entry level learning. It is the professors which provide you with the correct methods to learn the material, and most of the ones I have taken are great. With the exception of a few math courses, and an intro to philosophy class, I have learned a great deal while attending this university.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for all students!!!

    Tips for prospective students

When going off to college, keep your head held high. Never fear a new beginning or experience. Both are offered here.

    Bang for the buck

Paying for this school was worth the money, but never hesitate to apply for financial aid. Scholarships, grants, & etc. are all ways to help boost your college experience.

    Did enjoy being here

While attending, I lived on campus in the dorms. The experience was well worth it. I had a chance to meet a lot of really cool peole. The campus was a great size & also very multicultural.

    Did learn a lot

I really enjoyed attending this school. The teachers were awesome and really seem to care about their jobs as well as the students. My learning experience was great and I had plenty of fun in the process.

    Campus Safety

The campus police department is located on campus and is always working very hard to keep students safe. Security escorts to and from parking lots and around campus are available to students, especially after dark. Violence and unfortunate events at UNM are rare and far between.

    Greek Life

I personally have no experience of the Greek life at UNM.

    Clubs and Activities

There are countless clubs and activities at UNM for almost every interest and hobby. Since the clubs at UNM tend to be very outgoing if you have a hard time finding the right club they just might find you.

    Bang for the buck

There are plenty of ways to make college affordable at UNM especially for New Mexico residents. The tuition costs at UNM are manageable and if the cost is to high there are payment plans available to those who prefer not taking out loans.

    What to do for fun

There is beautiful duck pond located at the heart of UNM and plenty of grassy areas scattered throughout campus. These open areas are at the disposal of students to lounge, play outdoor games, or study. If the outdoors isn't what you are looking for there is a game room located on the bottom floor of the Student Union Building. The game room contains many pool tables and ping pong tables for students to use throughout the day. If indoor and outdoor activities on campus is just not the way you want to spend your time there is also many restaurants, bars, and other activities located within walking distance from campus.

    Food and Dining

The food at UNM, at least what I have experienced from the vendors in the Student Union Building, is a very over priced and not the best of food. I have eaten there on occasion because I was in a hurry or I was very hungry but I have always regretted it. As a college student I don't have very much money and I can't afford to spend a whole lot on something like food, especially mediocre food.

    Dorm Life

I have never personally lived in the dorms but from what little I have experienced being in the dorms with friends or hearing what they have had to say the dorm life is fun and interesting. The dorms at UNM are relatively small but clean.

    Academic Rigor

Most classes are well paced and in depth. Like most other Universities there are a few bad instructors who don't really connect with students and have ineffective teaching strategies but for the most part the instructors at UNM genuinely enjoy what they do and take time to teach students material. I have been fortunate enough to have instructors who are receptive to students and use the classroom as a learning place for both the instructor and the students, always improving on how the material is taught.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't have tunnel vision when deciding your future. There are many great opportunities at UNM, take some time to explore all the options in front of you. Get a degree in what you find interesting. The sky is the limit when it comes to education and you decide how far you will take it.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico is a great place to feel at home when away from home. There are many opportunities to become friends with a wide variety of people, all with great ambition. No matter what your dreams are, UNM gives you the opportunity to explore and achieve those dreams with the help of people who care; faculty and students alike.

If you enjoy the downtown scene, in addition to being really inclined to being out and about, you'll love this campus. As well as those who enjoy physical activities.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to explore, there are a lot of ways you can save on food, and supplies if you live on campus. For off campus students, be sure to take advantage of all your amenities as a student of this university.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is a lot. In comparison to all the other universities I have been to, the additional fees and everything else makes it very expensive.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful and there are many on site stores and convenient restaurants. However, the parking is incredibly terrible.

    Am learning a lot

UNM courses are not easy but they are not hard either. I learned from communicating directly with my professors, rather than just intuitively picking up the course materials.

Great for these types of students

The University of New Mexico is diverse. That is an obvious statement, but not a lot of people believe they will find their place. Great thing about UNM, you can make your own place AND, they let you. In fact, they encourage it. You can create your own degree, your own club/ organization and you can choose to live where you want. That is half the battle, so anybody who has the quality of elitism, or at the very least, goals they would like to achieve, this is your place and you can make it how ever you please. If you are a slacker... we have classes and degrees for you too.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are not goal driven, if you are not success craving, do not waste your time. Come to college to better yourself and your knowledge of the world. There is a lot to learn here about life, about culture, about common sense and about our world. Join something that will become revolutionary... change at least one persons life that you meet. Live by a mantra for your first semester and realize it was silly. Mess up and rebuild your confidence, it is all worth it. Use what you learn to survive in our tough world today. When I say make a difference, I mean it. The most important thing is learn how to find yourself. College can be a lot more rewarding then just a steady good paying job. When your done here, another piece of your puzzle will have been created and you will be one step closer to complete. Suck it up and reap the benefits of college.

    Bang for the buck

Because I was set back a whole semester I have had to spend money on things that were unnecessary. It was not a good time for me at all financially but I am working on getting everything back on track and I am looking into better advisement at UNM. Lets just say, when you are a freshmen you will fail... but then you will learn. I came to college to learn not to be taught and that is what I am doing.

    Am enjoying being here

The classes are great! The teachers are giving me everything I need to succeed, but the resident life has got to be one of the most stressful things I have ever had to deal with. Since this is my second year first semester, I hope that the same stressful situations do not occur so I can be thoroughly happy at the university. I am also glad we are getting a new president at UNM. Advisement also has become better but in the beginning of my college career it was beyond fixable, it was just plain awful.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned the waters and have experienced the best things that are expected out of college. I plan to be a graduate student here at UNM because I find that I am making steady progress here. I have not failed at anything here because the classes and teachers are understanding, which is not something you would get from just any other college... but I could be wrong because this is the only college I have attended. I am lucky to have gone to UNM first before any other college.

    Campus Safety

This is something UNM does not take lightly. There are campus police everywhere, and there are multiple phone towers if a student is ever in danger. These towers contact the police right away to that location and they will arrive within in minutes.

    Greek Life

Not too sure about this honestly.

    Clubs and Activities

Too many to describe here. Get on UNM's website and just explore all the possibilites.

Great for these types of students

For all students. The UNM main campus offers so many different classes and career choices. Just walk through the campus once and you can see all the different cultures that are already attending.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The burn of the aggie before the UNM Lobos play the New Mexico State Aggies in football. They burn a very large cowboy to the ground. It is a great tradition to be part of just once or twice.

    Bang for the buck

Check out the programs that UNM has to offer. There are tons of activities and trips that students go on for discounted prices. It is easy to do things and make your money go a long ways.

    What to do for fun

UNM is in the heart of New Mexico. The weather is always gorgeous here and there are so many outdoor activities to do here. A very great place to be if you are into doing stuff outdoors.

    Food and Dining

There is the SUB and the La Posada. Both have great food.

    Dorm Life

The Dorm Life is expanding at UNM currently and with time, it will become even better. There will be more students housed on campus and this will allow for more success within the institution.

    Academic Rigor

There are laid back teachers and the tough teachers. Either way, if you put full effort towards the class, there will not be any problems in completing the course.

    Tips for prospective students

Have a plan and go into each day with the idea knowing you will learn. The environment of UNM is positive and there are so many options a student can take advantage of to earn a degree.

    In three sentences

I have completed 2 and a half years here and have loved it. I feel I have made substantial progress towards my degree and the knowledge I will need once I complete my degree. UNM is a great college and every student should consider attending.

    Campus Safety

Very safe- campus police patrol heavily as does campus security, there are also emergency call stations throughout the entire campus.

Great for these types of students

Anyone can find a place here. ANYONE!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

New Mexico is heavily Native American and Hispanic, these cultures mesh beautifully on the UNM campus and nowhere else has such beautiful diversity.

    Bang for the buck

Worth the education you get, the meal plan, however is a rip off.

    What to do for fun

Experience New Mexico, history, outdoors, old and new all in one.

    Food and Dining

Chartwells is awful. Overpriced and bland, however there are several area restaurants near campus that are affordable and tasty.

    Dorm Life

Dorm activities are great but the outdated, overrun dorms need help, desperate help. Fortunately several projects are ongoing in an attempt to update the halls.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

The city of Albuquerque is like any other major metro, it has its rough areas, be sure to avoid them at night.

    In three sentences

A very different campus than most, UNM is set in the middle of the southwestern city, Albuquerque. UNM is a proud school with strong programs in nearly every subject. A beautiful campus and great academics make for a wonderful experience.

The price of the education you will receive from the University of New Mexico will be out weighed by the fun and learning possibilities at hand.

    What to do for fun

For fun there are intramural sports in the gym, movies in the on campus theater and get together by dorm resident advisers.

    Food and Dining

The food in the cafeteria here is delicious but there are also off campus eating locations just across the street as well as off campus food providers on campus in the student union building.

The dorms are a great place for students to live with new student bonds being made everyday in a friendly environment.

    Campus Safety

There are many emergency buttons around campus that are readily accessible when in trouble. There is a campus walk hosted at the beginning of each semester where students can be taken on a tour to see all of these safety precautions. There have been a few problems with stabbings on campus, but majority of students joke about them and say only in New Mexico.

    Greek Life

The Greek Life on campus isn't the best, but it's growing. There's four Panhellenic sororities and over 10 IFC fraternities, as well as many multi-cultural greek organizations on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of great clubs on campus, it's just a matter of finding them. Take a trip to the Student Activities Office in the bottom floor of the SUB and you'll find out plenty of information.

Great for these types of students

Non-traditional, Hispanic, nursing students, law students, business students, hippies

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every Fall we have Red Rally, which is the beginning of Homecoming Week. For Red Rally, we burn a giant NM State Aggie (our rival school). On May 4th, we have May the Fourth Be With You, which is big Star Wars festival on campus. We also have several international and culture festivals on campus, which provide great entertainment on your walk between classes.

    Bang for the buck

If you are a New Mexico resident, you can get the Bridge and Lottery Scholarships right out of High School, which cover tuition entirely. If you do not get those scholarships, this is still a fairly inexpensive school with a great education.

    What to do for fun

The best thing to do in regards to UNM is tailgate and attend football and basketball games. Other than that, the next big thing is to go to house parties. It is a dry campus, so you won't be seeing too much partying there. What you put into it is what you get out of it.

    Food and Dining

The food at the dorm cafeteria is not the best. The food in the Student Union Building comes from outside vendors and is a little bit better. There are also a lot of restaurants near campus that are probably the best place to eat.

    Dorm Life

I personally have never lived in the dorms, but I have many friends who have and they said they are very dirty and old. They have been compared to living in a dungeon. However, there is a third-party dorm company building dorms on campus, which are anticipated to be very nice.

    Academic Rigor

I would say the academic rigor is moderate, but it depends on your major. Biology and , Law School, and Nursing majors are extremely competitive. I go to the Anderson School of Business, which isn't super difficult to get into. However it is beneficial when you are a business student for the real world.

    Tips for prospective students

Join Greek Life, student Senate, or live in the dorms to get a full college experience. When registering for classes, look up the professors on ratemyprofessor.com first. Buy used textbooks from Sammy's or online after you get the class syllabus; the UNM Bookstore can get pricey.

    In three sentences

UNM is very diverse and the education for the Business school is excellent. They are not very accommodating towards the typical college student experience, but they are working towards that directions. UNM needs to expand on their extracurricular organizations.

Tuition for in-state students is pretty cheap compared to most colleges and that's always a plus. But even though it;s cheap, they don't skimp. They teachers and graduate assistants are very knowledgeable and always willing to help, the scenery is amazing and student fees give us great pluses to the campus. All in all, I consider UNM to be a win/win situation!

I love the UNM campus. It's a beautiful campus with lots of trees and grass. It's great being able to go and lay out in the sun by the Duck Pond ans listen to the air in the trees, the water from the fountains and hearing the ducks running around quacking. It's an amazing stress reliever and I spend as much time out there as I can. It's gorgeous.

The teachers here at UNM really know what they're talking about, and you can really tell that they enjoy the field they are teaching in. Some of them are hard, and they;re sticklers for certain things but for the most part the teachers are laid back and relaxed but still challenge you at the same time.

UNM is great for anybody! I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's true. If you're from NM it's great financially, if you are not from NM, there are plenty of options. There are sooo many classes that you can take and sooo many interesting people to meet.

    Tips for prospective students

If you can, definitely dorm! It is really convenient and fun. Don't worry about knowing your major right off the bat, you can't declare one right away anyway. Don't overload your schedule with tough classes, take some fun ones like racquetball or swimming (which will also help you avoid the freshman 15!). Lastly, take interest in the classes you take - it's annoying when people don't care about their courses; you just waste every one's time.

    Bang for the buck

If you live in New Mexico, it is definitely worth it to go to UNM. Everyone knows instate tuition is cheaper, but if you are a NM resident you can apply for the lottery scholarship, which if you maintain a certain GPA, will cover your tuition all four years. Even if you don't like UNM you may have the option to go somewhere through them, for the same tuition rate. UNM is very much about accommodating students. They really want students to succeed and they try their best through various means of financial aid. Even if you're from out of state, there are various scholarships that you can apply for to help cover the cost. My roommate, for example, is here from another state and has a Portuguese scholarship paying for her schooling.

    Am enjoying being here

I really do love UNM. The campus is great and the people are great, thus resulting in a great learning environment. I am in a dorm also, and the people on my floor are fabulous. You get to know a lot of people from very diverse backgrounds, regardless of if you dorm or not. It's also really easy to get around campus. You pick up where everything is very quickly and you can get to most of your classes within 15 minutes walking time.

    Am learning a lot

I just graduated high school, and college is such a change! I have learned more in a week at UNM, than I did an entire semester in high school. The teachers are intelligent and really friendly. They are willing to help you every step of the way, but YOU have to put forth the effort so there's a lot more responsibility - which is a good thing, honestly. There are so many more options when it comes to courses and there is bound to be something you would enjoy.

Students who are willing to get out there and meet people instead of waiting for people to come to them. Students who are smart about partying and academics. This school is a pretty good fit for most people though. It's hard to narrow down the right type of person.

    Tips for prospective students

Look for scholarships. Just. Look for scholarships haha. Definitely try to register early because you do NOT want an 8 AM class. Partying is fun but learn how to prioritize your life. Sometimes you'll have to stay in to write a paper. :( Studying should take up more of your life than it did in high school, so be prepared for that. Freshmen should sign up for the Freshman Courses provided to them, it will be SO worth it.

    Bang for the buck

I'm an in-state student so I get the lottery scholarship but the pricing isn't too bad. I've found a way to balance out the bills for my sorority, books, tuition, etc effectively so it costs my parents and me the least amount of money. It's really all about balancing and you have to be willing to look hard for scholarships and learn what meal plans or housing arrangements are best for your budget.

    Am enjoying being here

I joined a sorority and that is what makes my experience so wonderful. It doesn't really matter what you join (and you'll hear this a thousand times I'm sure) but GET INVOLVED. UNM doesn't really do a great job of involving all the students and integrating them into the campus. But if you join a sport or club, your experience will become that much better. Even just living in the dorms will make you feel as if you belong here more.

    Am learning a lot

This is my first semester in college, so a lot of my learning is based upon my willingness and ability. College is definitely way different from high school in the sense that you essentially have to teach yourself because you have to take the initiative to read and absorb the information. I would absolutely recommend the Freshmen Academic Courses to any incoming freshman. It helps tremendously with the transition. The teachers understand that your new to this experience and they want to help the best they can. Most are willing to give you a few breaks too. The big lectures are a little more difficult to adjust to, but probably my favorite. You'll never get called on in those classes when you don't know the answer ;) and often, it isn't necessary to go if you make sure to go to the review sessions before the tests.

    Tips for prospective students

Overall, I think the University of New Mexico can be for any type of student. It's a pretty big school, so there's plenty of programs out there to suit different types of people. Although it's mostly known for it's medical and law schools, there are lots of other programs for students who decide to go into other fields.

    Tips for prospective students

Time management is key (but that's for any college). From my personal experience, I learned that procrastination is inevitable- but it really does hurt you in the end. In college (especially UNM), it's best to plan ahead and make time for all of your homework assignments. It really isn't fun to cram a 5 page paper a day before it's due. So- I would simply suggest to schedule homework and study time, because it'll really help!

    Bang for the buck

College IS expensive, but I overall think that the price of tuition here isn't too bad compared to other colleges. Granted, I pay in-state tuition, but the university offers plenty of scholarships for students who have a hard time paying for school. Since I felt that I have learned a lot, I would definitely say that it's worth the price.

    Am enjoying being here

I don't necessarily like Albuquerque (that's my own opinion of course), but I do really like the school and I enjoy living on campus. Overall, the people at school are friendly and the campus is great. Also, there are plenty of activities going on- so there's always something to do!

    Am learning a lot

With UNM, I feel as though I'm learning a LOT more in one semester than I ever did in a whole year in high school. I'm actually very impressed with this school- it challenges me, and I feel as if I'm receiving a good education. All of my professors have been really helpful and I actually enjoy going to class (most of the time). The exams are hard, but that's good because they're supposed to be! I would definitely recommend this school to others.

Attend UNM if you like meeting new people, are culturally tolerant, and if UNM has a good degree program for your interest. If you don't know if the degree program is good, find a student at UNM in the program and talk to them! Call around, call some professors in that specific field. Choosing a college is an important decision and not one to be chosen on a whim!

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! Go out and meet people, attend events, join a club (or 10)! If you get involved you will have fun no matter what. Also, attend every class, seriously, do it! You'll regret it if you don't! If you are ever struggling in a class, go to tutoring, talk to the instructor. Don't be afraid to get out there and ask questions. If financially possible, I also recommend living on campus for the freshmen year. It is an experience that every college student should have. You'll make life long friends and have a lot of awesome memories.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, no doubt about it, but I personally feel that I'm paying a decent amount for the level of education that I am receiving. As long as there are no more tuition increases, it will stay fine.

    Am enjoying being here

I personally was bugged at the idea of ending up at UNM, but my perspective has changed on that. I am currently a junior at UNM and I have loved every year here. If you get involved with the community and organizations on campus, there is no excuse to be bored! Many of the clubs have weekly events and there is always something to do. I have met a lot of awesome people here at UNM and besides, being a Lobo is the best!

    Am learning a lot

UNM is a great upgrade from the Santa Fe Public School system. I'm actually learning at a pace that's right for me! The instructors challenge their students with their curriculum and promote self thought. Some courses (or instructors) tell students information and leave it at that, but I've encountered many professors that require their students to think for themselves and come up with their own answers/theories. I feel like I am receiving a quality education and that I will be prepared to work in the field of my degree.

Great for these types of students

I am currently majoring in Biology (and Chemistry). By my junior year, I will be able to enter the Biology Honors Program. This program will allow me to work under a medical researcher (someone in my future profession) as a junior. In many colleges I have looked at, this type of work study is not awarded until you are going for your graduate. UNM is a really good school for getting experience early in medical research.

    Tips for prospective students

To succeed at UNM, you have to study hard and never give up; this is my attitude at UNM, and I am doing exceptionally well. Try to go up to teachers during their office hours and ask specific questions; this can drastically improve your academic performances in classes. If you are an in-state student and have decent grades, it should not be too difficult financially to attend UNM (maintaining a 2.5 GPA for the Lottery Scholarship is a piece of cake). If you are an out-of-state student, you may need to attain scholarships elsewhere to avoid debt. But at the same time, UNM is an exceptional research university. Though I have financial problems at UNM, it is the best university I have found for a career in medical research.

    Bang for the buck

UNM is a little cheaper than many colleges; however, I do think that it is a little unfair to out-of-state students like myself. Though out-of-state students pay outrageously more money to go to UNM (as well as most colleges), UNM still does not offer out-of-state students the same quality and quantity of scholarships. I have the Amigo Scholarship (the best scholarship specifically for out-of state students) which essentially allows me to pay in-state tuition. I do not have to pay extremely outrageous tuition, but about $3,000 per semester of in-state tuition is outrageous enough. On the other hand, in-state students (who graduated from a New Mexico high school) are eligible for more and better scholarships. The financial aid office has confirmed this to me. The Lottery Scholarship, for example, is specifically for in-state students and will pay for full tuition as long as the student takes 12 credit hours per semester and maintains a 2.5 GPA. Does it really seem fair that a student taking 12 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA deserves a free ride while I take 16-17 credit hours and maintain a GPA that is over a 4.0? My point is that even if you are lucky enough to receive the Amigo Scholarship (which is pretty much as prestigious as it gets for out-of-state students), it is still really difficult for out-of-state students to get the financial help that they deserve at UNM. I really love this college, but UNM prefers helping New Mexico high school graduates instead of out-of-state students, regardless of which students seem more deserving. As a relevant addition, the Regents scholarship is offered to both in and out-of-state students, and it provides a full ride. I interviewed for it; I was one of the few out-of-state students who qualified for the interview process, which already puts the odds against out-of-state students for attaining this scholarship. They also asked really weird questions with minimal relevance to my past experiences. For example, they asked me if I was a toy, what type would I be (action figure, etc.). The majority of questions were this way. The interview was a good test of creativity, but was not necessarily the best way to judge who was most deserving of such a prestigious scholarship in my opinion. Most recipients of Regents were and are in-state students, despite the fact that all of them already have full rides from the Lottery Scholarship.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here at UNM! I have lived in the humidity of Louisiana for most of my life, and I really enjoy the dry conditions of New Mexico in general. UNM is a really nice and relatively large campus, where it is nice enough to enjoy studying outside. I also really like the teachers and feel that I am receiving a good education. The teachers really want their students to succeed.

    Am learning a lot

I find that I am learning much more in college than in high school. The tests are more difficult (and tricky at times), which forces me to study even harder and learn more. I am only a sophomore now, but I intend to attain my doctorate to become a Medical Scientist. I am one of those students that refuses to achieve any lower than a 4.0 GPA. This feat is somewhat more difficult at UNM than in other colleges. Unlike the colleges I have seen in Louisiana (where I am from), UNM's grading system is on a plus and minus scale. An A plus (which is hard to get) gives you a 4.33 GPA, while an A minus equates to a 3.66 GPA. Because I really want a 4.0 (or higher), I have to really make sure I am not venturing too low in the A range. I find that this pressure to not just earn an A, but a high A pushes me to study and learn even more than some of the other colleges I have considered.

Great for these types of students

Good for the self-motivated student who is outgoing and has a high self-esteem. Like I have said before, UNM is big and so you need to be willing to put yourself into positions to get to know professors and other students. Many people that I knew left UNM because they were lonely and felt like an outcast, but it was because they sat in their room all day and didn't make an effort to be noticed. The people are friendly, but you will need to make an effort to get to know people.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know Albuquerque and learn how to live and act in a city (especially if you come from a small town). Always get to know the professors because classes can be big and you don't want to be just another face in the crowd. Do the best you can your first few years because the classes only get harder and you don't want yor record to be tainted with C's or D's in classes like Soc 101 or Music Appreciation. Get involved in campus activities! UNM is a large school and if you don't put yourself in a place to be involved, then you will have a difficult time connecting with other students and the school. Live on campus your first year. There is very limited off campus housing and it will make your life so much easier to live in the dorms. Plus the dorms are the best way to meet new people.

    Bang for the buck

If you are a resident of New Mexico, there is no better deal than UNM. Tuition is free if you meet the reasonably easy standards to receive the Lottery Scholarship and maintain it over four years. The school is very good as a learning institution and surpasses all schools in the state aside from NM Tech in most major areas. The amazing financial benefits of going to UNM is one of the major reasons I chose the University.

    Am enjoying being here

UNM is a nice campus and there is a kind student environment. Albuquerque is a fairly large city and comes with some of the downfalls of a large city. There are lots of places to go and things to do, but there are dangerous areas and a large amount of vagrant types lurking around certain areas of the city. Once you have learned where to go and not to go, it is a great place.

    Am learning a lot

In general, all of the professors here are great. I am currently a Junior and have enjoyed nearly every class I have taken. I have never taken a class that I have been very disappointed with and it is easy to get help for classes that are difficult. I have never finished a class feeling like I hadn't learned something.

Great for these types of students

Self-motivated students who want to get into a reputable grad school.

    Tips for prospective students

The professors, GA's and TA's are really the greatest resources available on UNM. Go ask them questions and even make comments during their office hours. It really makes the difference between a B and A. Also, learn to manage your time. Take advantage of the free tutoring service. Play hard, work harder.

    Bang for the buck

Really affordable flagship university. For the education one receives, this is a really good deal. There is the lottery scholarship for in-state students (only requirement is have a 2.5 GPA with a minimum of 12 credit hours) and out-of-state students get a pretty sweet deal too, I heard. General scholarships are also available.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus food is not the greatest but the surrounding area offers plenty of different cuisines to sate your hunger. The campus is pretty nice. Not a lot of stuff to do on campus. Evidently, this school is a commuter school. School gets VERY empty on weekends.

    Am learning a lot

I have never learned so much in my life. In all of my classes, I have learned material that I never knew before. For example, in my Spanish class, my instructor has taught me in four months more than my Spanish teacher at my local high school for three years. Not only that, but I have also understood Math concepts better. I have learned time management and research skills as well.

Great for these types of students

Some of the departments are highly ranked, if your interested in one of those subjects its a great school for you. Also if you love lots of different learning styles rather than just straight up lecture.

    Tips for prospective students

Try a class in the different departments, you never know what you really love, or are really good at might not be something you would have thought of before if you don't. Take a fun class every semester that is not the focus of your major or minor there are a lot of different options for dance or gym classes, or just a subject you enjoy but don't intend to concentrate in. Take advantage of all of the different types of opportunities around campus and all of the different clubs that are offered.

    Bang for the buck

Its expensive and in some classes that felt almost like a review of things I felt should have been taught in Elementary, Middle and High School so it did not seem like money well spent, but the extras they have such as tutoring or the weekly entertainment on campus make up for that as well as the quality of teaching in higher level classes.

    Am enjoying being here

The people on campus are great, the campus is beautiful. However, most people live off campus so the campus does not have a lot to do over the weekends or at night, but the communities within the various dorms try to have something for the students to do almost every night.

    Academic Rigor

I found most of the required classes a review of concepts I had already learned. All of the upper division classes that I have taken have been challenging and interesting, the teachers may require you to work the whole semester, some may not and only have one test at the end, the variety gives a unique challenge to every class.

Great for these types of students

UNM is great for honors students, the honors program offers so many interesting classes and is an overall amazing program. Students interested in the arts will also like UNM. It's also great for students from out of state that are looking for an affordable university that will provide a great education in a larger city.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early and make sure to learn about all of the scholarships available to you. Attend orientation and find other ways to explore the campus and meet other students. Make sure to create a schedule that is not only academic but also includes a class that you want to take for fun, such as a physical education or art class. Most of all, remember to have fun and stay on top of homework.

    Bang for the buck

There are so many great scholarships offered, and it's easy to find books not only on campus but also in nearby bookstores and online. Tuition may seem like a lot at first, but by utilizing financial aid and scholarships, UNM is affordable to nearly everyone, and the education provided is well worth the money spent!

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is very open and welcoming. There is a lot of southwest influence in the buildings and decor which makes it great for out of state students who have not visited New Mexico often. There are many places to study and hang out between classes, and it's easy to spend an entire day there!

    Am learning a lot

There are many different courses offered which enables you to create a schedule with a balance of necessary courses and fun courses. Bang for the buck

The University of New Mexico deserves a 4 out of 5 for bang for the buck. The reason why UNM is great is because it offers many different concentration fields and the tuition at UNM is considerably lower than other universities. So definitely if you don't mind living in New Mexico UNM is definitely a steal.

    What to do for fun

The University of New Mexico deserves a 5 out of 5 for what to do for fun. The reasons why I say that is because in Albuquerque, New Mexico there is not much to do, so the fact that UNM is always promoting sports and activities not just for students but for the community is great. I believe that without UNM living in Albuquerque, New Mexico would be more boring.

    Food and Dining

The University of New Mexico deserves a 4 out of 5 for food and dining. The reason I say 4 and not 5 is because some of the food they have served at La Posada, which is the cafeteria is either burnt or taste bland. However, I do appreciate that UNM does have fresh fruits and salads at most of their food locations.

    Dorm Life

The University of New Mexico Main Campus deserves a 2 out of 5 stars for dorm life.I personally have chosen to not live on campus because I wanted to live with my boyfriend. However, I went to a orientation as a freshman and the dorms didn't look that appealing to me. Personally I like my privacy and living in a dorm seems very open and public, so I would not recommend living in a dorm anywhere.

    Academic Rigor

The University of New Mexico Main Campus deserves a 4 out of 5 stars for academic rigor because the classes are challenging but they are doable. IF you are a student that likes to cram material don't, because it is better to study and take your time that way when you take the test it won't be so hard. The material thought at UNM is challenging but there is a lot of tutoring like CAPS at the Zimmerman Library at UNM that helps students learn the material.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a student interested in attending the University of New Mexico Main Campus just make sure you wear tennis shoes because its a huge campus. Also you need to get your parking permits ahead of time that way you won't get a ticket if your rushing to a class. The teachers are very helpful and they want you to succeed.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico Main Campus is a great university. The teachers are friendly and the students are close nit. Overall The University of New Mexico is outstanding.

    Campus Safety

Campus is a very safe place to be, there is a very present campus P.D. and if one feels uncomfortable they can call and have an escort come to their location to walk them to where they need to be.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One really great thing about UNM is that before Christmas break there is a night walk where people from around the school have set up luminarias. This is one tradition that makes me love the campus and living on campus so much.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of on campus activities, from intramural sports to free movie nights and pep rallies. While living on campus there have been very few nights that I have been stuck for something to do.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall, La Posada is good for a few things but it is definitely not somewhere one would like to eat every day. I would recommend keeping food in a fridge in the dorms and using the kitchens in the dorms to make your own dinner at least once a week. Also there are other options in the Student Union Building but those can quickly add up and dining there can become very expensive.

    Dorm Life

I am living in Coronado which is a traditional style dorm. The dorms are where most of my friends live and it has really become my home. They are very clean, but it can become sloppy on the weekends when the cleaners don't come.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are difficult but as long as you are willing to go to class, pay attention, and do the work they will become a lot easier.

    Tips for prospective students

The one thing I have been told to do over, and over is to get involved and I would definitely like to pass that tip on. Whether it's just in the dorms or with Greek life or anything like that it is a great way to meet new people, get connected and stay involved.

    Campus Safety

You won't see them walking around much, but they do drive around campus. There are also alerts that are sent out via text message and e-mail when something has happened on campus, as well as emergency phones scattered throughout the grounds.

Great for these types of students

People who do not require a lot of personal attention to succeed. Class sizes are usually large, particularly in the first two years. If you need a teacher who knows your name and pesters you for late work, this is not the right type of school for you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a giant cement intersection constructed in the middle of the campus called the Center of the City. It is directionally aligned with the compass rose, and the colloquial lore is that it is not only the center of the campus, but the center of the city. This, however, is not true.

    Bang for the buck

It's pretty typical for what you're going to find at a university. There are plenty of opportunities though. It's up to you to maximize their potential.

    What to do for fun

There's always something going on. Check out the boards around campus for fliers, or the website, or just walk around by the SUB to see what's happening any ol' time.

    Food and Dining

It depends where you go, and how much you're willing to spend. La Posada, I've heard, is terrible. There is a food court in the SUB though, and that has some pretty decent restaurants, and there are mercados on campus as well that provide stuff like sandwiches, burritos, and snack items, and if you're low on cash, there are always the vending machines. Most are credit card or Lobo card only.

    Dorm Life

Honestly, I'm not qualified to answer this question since I live off-campus, and have never been in the dorms. That's why I gave it a low rating. Nothing personal, UNM, I just like my privacy.

    Academic Rigor

Depends on the subject, of course. Classes with labs are going to be more reliant on in-class work. There's a fair amount of reading for pretty much every subject though.

    Tips for prospective students

If you don't know what you want to major in yet, don't worry about it. You don't have to declare until junior year. That gives you some time to try out different things.

    In three sentences

UNM has a beautiful campus, and great transportation system. I haven't met anybody who wasn't nice so far. The only thing I don't like is the over-reliance of graduate TA's teaching 100-level courses; some are good, but others aren't--that makes the learning a challenge.

One of the most best things to do is hanging out with friends during breaks or after classes. There is also a duck pond located in the middle of campus that is a great place to relax.

There is quite a bit of dining and food choices at the University of New Mexico. There are numerous well known choices to choose from that are on campus. Then there is also other restaurants within walking distance of the university.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor all depends on what classes that are being taken. The classes seem to test a person's abilities in all the subjects. They give you an academic challenge that makes you proud when you have succeeded.

Campus is pretty safe. There are a lot of blue poles that you press the red button in an emergency and someone will get to you within minutes. But as always, use your instincts and street smarts. Anywhere you go will have danger.

    Greek Life

There are several sororities and fraternities. Each one has a special place for any student interested. The Greek's do a lot of community events and support the school.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities I cannot even name them all. But rest assured there is something here for everyone.

Great for these types of students

This University is great for all types of students there is no discrimination here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I want to say an unusual location on campus is the underground library. It is pretty exciting.

    Bang for the buck

UNM is really a steal most college students do not get such a cheap in-state tuition. There really is not beating this price for education.

    What to do for fun

At UNM there are a lot of contests and dances that the students host. There is a Miss UNM competition for pageant girls and things of that sort. There are pep rallies, sports events and just overall fun stuff.

    Food and Dining

The food is excellent!!!! Whether you are eating in the cafeteria or the sub you will enjoy your meals. My favorite place to eat at SUB is time's square. Order the godfather it is delicious!!

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not the top of the line, but they are livable just make sure to keep your room tidy at all times and be courteous of your roommates and hall mates.

    Academic Rigor

A lot of the classes are challenging, but there are also great instructors there to help you understand the material during class as well as during office hours. A lot of times teachers will be there to help you 24 hours a day.

    Tips for prospective students

Use every resource possible. The libraries are open late, some even 24 hours. All of the computer usage is free and money is put on your lobo id each semester so that you can use it to print papers.

    In three sentences

I feel the university is a 9! It has one of the lowest in state tuition's available. There are also a lot of great degree programs.

    Food and Dining

The dining food in the cafeteria is okay, after eating their for a few months it gets tiring. Their are fast food restaurants on campus tho those never get old!.

    Dorm Life

I have lived on campus for two semester. I renewed my contract for two more semesters. I love living on campus, it is very convenient. Class buildings are no more than 15 minutes from the dorms. you can wake up 30 minutes before class and make it on time. The environment is great!. It's a great way to meet new people and get involved.

    Academic Rigor

The classes here can be challenging depending on what classes you take and what your interests are. Some classes may come easier to others maybe because of the high school they attended. Even if your not the smartest kid you can succeed in the classes if you put in the work.

    Tips for prospective students

Even if a person is still unsure of what he or she may want to major in there are many opportunities at UNM.

    What to do for fun

There is the game room where you can play ping pong, video games, pool, etc. There is a gym area featuring two pools, basketball courts, open weights, etc. As always, you can hang out with the great people at UNM.

    Food and Dining

UNM offers a food program where it is an all you can eat buffet. The food itself is delicious and offers many choices. Also, there is an area that features restaurants such as Starbucks, Sonic, and Chik-Fil-A.

    Dorm Life

The dorms themselves are great. They offer all types of dorms, singles. doubles, etc. They also have programs where you eat, sleep, and go to the same class with the same people; referred to as a LLC.

    Academic Rigor

    Campus Safety

As a woman, I have never had a safety issue in four years of attending UNM, even as a night student. On Central Ave and in the area south of campus, sometimes there are people who make me feel uncomfortable, but I have never had an actual problem, nor have I ever heard of anyone else having one.

Great for these types of students

UNM is great for working students. Courses are relatively flexible in scheduling, and it's easy to get to campus at night.

    What to do for fun

The best part about Albuquerque is the mountains on the edge of town, which offer endless opportunities for recreation. You could also go downtown, or just enjoy a chill coffee shop, depending on your scene.

    Food and Dining

Most freshmen are required to purchase an overpriced meal plan. The food at the dining hall, La Posada, is usually tasty, but offers unpleasantly frequent bouts of... well, stomach upset.

    Dorm Life

I lived in one of the older dorms for a year. It was loud and unfriendly. Maintenance was impossible to deal with.

    Academic Rigor

I was challenged in almost all of my classes. The academic atmosphere is definitely not one of competition.

    Tips for prospective students

Find the appropriate people to advise you in your field early on. Depending on your department, they may not reach out to you.

    In three sentences

UNM is an excellent research university for the self-motivated student. Many improvements have been made in advisement in the past four years. For out-of-state students, attaining resident tuition after twelve months of residency is a breeze.

    Campus Safety

The campus is safe, but you have to be smart about what you do. We have a police station on campus (not security guards, actual police), but they can't be everywhere all the time. On the back of every ID card there is also a number you can call, and they will escort anywhere on campus, and about a mile off. If you ever need to walk at night, even if it's just from your class to the dorms, you can call the escort service and they can walk with you. You just have to make sure not to walk down Central (the main street that parallels campus) at night, alone.

    Greek Life

I don't know anything about Greek Life. I have friends who love and those who don't.

    Clubs and Activities

So many clubs I can't even say. I tried out a couple different service clubs, Circle K International was and is my favorite. But also don't feel like you have to be part of a service club, feel free to try out different interest clubs; The Hobbit society, the Muggle club, Japanese club, Frisbee, etc.

Great for these types of students

UNM had a great Anthropology program (lucky for me!) as well as a great department for students looking to travel abroad. The Anderson School of Management is also good.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have the annual burning of the Aggie. Our main rival is New Mexico State University (the Aggies), and so we build a seven-ish foot tall version of their mascot and then burn it. If you are really interested in Burning effigies drive to Santa Fe for Zozobra. He's a three story tall puppet who moves and groans. People put regrets and sorrows inside him, and then burn him. He's also called Old Man Gloom.

    Bang for the buck

I'm cheap and poor. If you're the same, no matter where you go everything will be too expensive. Accept that.

    What to do for fun

Fun depends upon what you like to do as an individual. The area around campus is mostly restaurants, galleries, yoga studios, etc. You can take a bus to the mall where you can catch a movie or just go shopping. You can also take the bus and then catch a bike trail that will take you along the Rio Grand. You can also always go up into the mountains and go for a hike (Albuquerque is at the base of a mountain). Santa Fe is only an hour drive away if you're more into artsy and traditional activities. The Fiestas, the Pet Parade, Zozobra, all happen in the fall and are great fun. In general if you want to go out and do something you'll be able to find something to do.

    Food and Dining

I come from a family and community that instilled high standards of food quality and taste in my while growing up, and while the selection of food on campus is not terrible, it was not as good as I would prefer. The student union building has multiple fast food selections, and the convenience stores run by the university all over campus are overpriced. The cafeteria, La Posada, is fine to eat for about two weeks, then you start to hate it, then you accept the fact that you have to eat the food, and then you fall into a period where you don't hate the food, but you don't like it either. The one bright spot about La Posada is that they have a fairly good and consistent in quality salad bar. If you don't like healthier food, you will have constant access to fried foods. A local co-op called La Montinita recently opened a small satellite location on campus. I would have bought all my food from that place if I could afford it. They offer high quality organic food selections as well as things like tea, dried fruits, and other packaged goods. Things are more expensive because of the higher quality.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dormitories for my first two years at UNM and it was a great choice! There are older dorms that need some TLC. I recommend no living in an apartment style dorm, they're called the SRC's. I've had friends who got terrible suite-mates, and since you're sharing a kitchen things get messy. I think the dorms where you have a single roommate and you share a bathroom witch is cleaned by a cleaning staff, is the best choice. The university also recently allowed a private company to build and maintain a new dorm complex. I don't know what they're going to be like since they're not finished building yet, but hopefully they're good.

    Academic Rigor

UNM is not the most academically challenging school, but neither is it just a laid back do nothing institution. This is very much a university where you get back as much as you put into your classes. Each major demands a different amount of investment; Music Education, The BMSD program and Architecture are all very demanding programs. That being said, if you're in an average program (when it comes to things like academic workload and time required) you have to push yourself if you want to be at the top of you class, you won't be able to just fall into good grades.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're thinking about coming to UNM, really think about what you want to major in. The first year has mandatory advisement, and they will push you to decide on a major. But also take the opportunity to try out new classes and decide on something you like. Also don't be surprised if it turns out that it's going to take you more than four years to graduate. It happens to a lot of people. One of the best things I can tell you is to get to know not only your departments advisor, but also the teachers in your department. Teachers have required office hours, which they mostly spend just sitting in their office working and waiting until a student comes to talk to them. They will be able to give you advice, point you toward scholarships, grants, internships and field schools.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico is a good southwestern school. Most students are local New Mexicans because the Lottery Scholarship pays college tuition for residents. If you've never experienced twelve months of constant sunshine it's a good place to come, if you dislike chile and a crappy football team, it's not the best.

Safety at the University of New Mexico is greatly enforced. I feel safe on campus all the time.

    Clubs and Activities

I am in Phi Eta Sigma. Phi Eta Sigma is an honors society. You are able to be recognized for your academics and participate in fun events throughout the year. I am also a part of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars at the University of New Mexico. This is a society that is based off your progress and academics throughout your years at the University.

Great for these types of students

The University of New Mexico is a great place if you love the medical field. There are so many opportunities for students who enjoy nursing, pre-med, and cancer research. This university also has a great program for architecture. I know many people who have been accepted into the program and they are in love with it. Overall, students can enjoy an outgoing and friendly environment. The University of New Mexico is a fun place to be.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The duck pond is located around the middle of campus at the University of New Mexico. It is a beautiful place where you can go to relax, take a walk, or watch the ducks swim around. There is a fountain situated right in the middle of the pond. The sound of the waterfall is very soothing. There are many events on campus throughout the year. If you become a part of sororities or fraternities then you'll always be busy. I myself am not in one, but many people enjoy it. I'm in Phi Eta Sigma, an honors program, and I participate in community service events at the university. I'm also a part of SSS, students support services, where you get inducted based on your financial needs and also if your a first time generation student attending college. As part of SSS we also participate in the events at the university such as Hanging of the Greens. This event is during the winter and we hang up thousands of luminarias all around campus. Luminarias are paper bags filled with sand and in the middle there is a candle. We light up all the candles and enjoy the view of campus that night.

    Bang for the buck

I'm a work study student and this helps a lot with my school and outside expenses. Work study was provided to me based on my financial needs. My parents have a very low income and the jobs that I have had at the university has helped. I don't receive a lot but it sure does help with gas and some books. It makes me feel good when I can take my parents out to eat every once in a while too. Your expenses at the University of New Mexico is definitely worth it. You receive a great education that will help you throughout the rest of your life.

    What to do for fun

For fun I like hanging out with my friends. We usually go out to the movies or dinner. We enjoy trying new things every time and so we like changing up the dinner places we go to all the time. On my spare time I like volunteering at the University of New Mexico Hospital. When I'm not helping out I'm either shadowing the nurses on six south. Six south is the floor for oncology. I have learned many things on this floor that will definitely help me on my way to becoming a nurse. I also like volunteering at my church. I attend Our Lady of Guadalupe and I enjoy being a Eucharist minister as well as a lecturer. During their annual fundraising carnival I enjoy helping out at the Hamburger stand with my family. I'm also very passionate about music. I love music because there's always a song you can find to relate to your mood. I enjoy listening to pretty much everything except classical or jazz music.

    Food and Dining

There is a lot of variety at the University of New Mexico. You can always eat at the sub. The sub is the most common place where students go for lunch. There are some famous local restaurants such as Sonic, Chic-Fil-A, Dos Hermanos etc. It's a nice place to grab a bite to eat in between classes and to chat with your friends as well. There is a place called La Posada, or Lapo for short, and that is the cafeteria for dorm students. I have also tasted the food there several times and it's great. There is always such a huge variety that is very tasty.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived at the dorms at the University of New Mexico. However, I have friends that have lived there and they have enjoyed it all the way. Dorm life at the university is very calm and the atmosphere is full of positive energy. When I stay to study or hang out at their dorms I feel safe. The managers for each hall are always on top of their duty to maintain a good and healthy environment.

    Academic Rigor

The University of New Mexico sets high standards and expectations for their students as well as their staff. In this university they expect much more than assuring the course content being taught but also applied skills and critically thinking about the subject matter. At this level of higher education there needs to be a form of independence being established in every student. Ones own education should be a top priority. One must know that without difficulty in trying something new there is no gain.

    Tips for prospective students

You have to first believe in yourself before you can accomplish your set goals. You have to know that with strong dedication anything is possible. A university may be very intimidating when attending for the first time, but you have to find assistance whenever you feel lost. This is the only way you will become confident and become better prepared for your future. No matter what struggle you go through college know that there is always someone there to help or listen. Never hesitate to talk to a professor about something, a counselor, or an advisor-- they are there to help you.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico has been a true blessing for me because I have found so many opportunities here. I come from a low income family and at the University of New Mexico I have been provided with a great mentoring program that has guided me with a lot of assistance. I believe the University of New Mexico deserves much credit for being an outstanding place of college education.

Safety is not a big issue. At UNM there is campus police that are always around and there are big bright blue pillars that are around every couple minutes that have phones and panic buttons. So if it is late at night and you are worried find a blue pillar and they will have someone there right away.

Don't put things off. When you get a project or assignment that counts for a third of your grade, put some thought into it.

    In three sentences

A very affordable school with good intentions. Has a well put together team for anything in the medical field. Classes are easy going if you show up and do the work.

    Campus Safety

Like I said earlier, the university is located directly on Central Ave. I think safety is great during the day but roaming the university at night can be a little risky in my opinion

    Greek Life

I would recommend becoming a part of the greek community if you have the time. They are all a great group of people and especially if it is your first year at UNM, it is a great way to make long time friends

Great for these types of students

UNM has such a diverse community of students that I would recommend it for an open minded individual. Albuquerque has so many hidden treasures to offer that make it such a nice place to live and UNM is the same way.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The location of the school itself is pretty unusual. It is located on a street called Central Ave. where a lot of homeless people seem to dwell and the further you drive up the street, you may run into a prostitute or two. Don't let this discourage you though, they are all very harmless and only come out at night

    Bang for the buck

I give this five stars because it is so inexpensive to attend UNM and the campus is just beautiful. The majority of UNM students seem to be out-of-state, so whatever you have heard about New Mexico residents, do not let it stop you from enjoying a great university with fabulous academics and unbelievable affordability

    What to do for fun

The university is located right in the heart of Albuquerque and is extremely close to the downtown area which offers so many shops, restaurants, lounges, and much more. There are also great things always going on on campus (movie nights, football games, performing arts performances)

    Food and Dining

I am a huge fan of the food in and around the UNM campus, there are so many different places to choose. From the Pita Pit across the street, to the Starbucks in Zimmerman Library, you can always find delicious food and snacks wherever you go. I personally recommend Saggios!

    Dorm Life

The original on campus dorms at UNM are horrible, to say the least. Extremely small and very dirty. Recently though, UNM has built new dorms that are down the street from campus called LOBO Village and the mini apartments give students a fully furnished, very spacious apartment style dorm, the price is just a bit steep.

    Academic Rigor

UNM has great professors and teachers who are dedicated and immensely involved in the subjects they teach. The academic level is very high and academic competition can be fierce

    Tips for prospective students

Don't underestimate the academic level of this college. Treat it as any other accredited 4 year university and do not take on more credit hours than you can handle.

    In three sentences

For being a college located in New Mexico (which we all know is a state that is constantly criticized for its lack of educational merit), UNM is a very credible university. I was surprised to find the the level of education, as well as the staff was above average. Even students from out-of state seem to agree that UNM has a lot to offer at an affordable price.

    Greek Life

I have met great people thanks to my fraterntiy. The community service projects and the fraternity olympiad are a must-have in college life.

    Clubs and Activities

I am part of the showcase dance team, the tango club and handball team. The options for clubs are enormous.

Great for these types of students

For everyone, from athletes to researchers, the chances are many

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Undie run around campus every spring semester along more than a thousand students. Spring storm and hanging in the greens are great community projects the whole school is involved in. Class crawl and Movin-in is a event when volunteers help students to move to their dorms and to find their classes.

    Bang for the buck

Its a really affordable school with a lot of scholarship opportunnities for those who look for them.

    What to do for fun

Frisbee, Intramural sports, dancing, dorm parties...your choice.

    Food and Dining

It could be better, but there are options for everyone.

    Dorm Life

Great dorm life. I was dorm president and the friends I met are fantastic

    Academic Rigor

The difficulty of your classes like in any school with depend on your decision. Pick smart.

    Tips for prospective students

Pick your classes wisely and aim for more than the school standards. Try to get involve with research.

    In three sentences

Big school with a lot of access to a good education. Excellent honors program and affordable dorm life.

We have phone booths to where you can call to have an escort. They are fantastic, and do their job wonderfully.

    Greek Life

Not too sure, haven't experienced it, but they do great things for the community and campus.

    Clubs and Activities

I've attended many activities and they are all fantastic! Our student union always has fun things going on. If you love sports we have several club teams, and always have competitive sports going on which you can make teams for.

Great for these types of students

If you love working out, our gym is amazing. Olympic pool, tons of basketball courts, racquetball courts, MASSIVE field, ultimate Frisbee, great track and weight room, and the yoga/dance rooms.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is the SUB, which has food chain restaurants, its like the hang out. Also down stairs in the Den with billiards. We have the Undie Run every year, which is a blast. As well as the Olympiad, which is for the residents.

    Bang for the buck

Everything around campus is cheap, if you use you UNM ID you get student discounts practically anywhere.

    What to do for fun

Join a club, club sport, frat or sorority, ROTC, or go to the gym!

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is the cafeteria, they don't always have the best food but the workers are outstanding. When in doubt eat a breakfast burrito or the pizza.

    Dorm Life

Everyone is very friendly, I highly recommend it. You meet tons of new people, and get to participate in many activities that people that don't live on campus don't get do.

    Academic Rigor

Depends on the classes that you take. Make sure if you're taking a top fail class at UNM that you put lots of hard work into it, don't slack. It may be an easy class but it's a top fail one for a reason.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for every scholarship you can, keep your grades up if you have received the Lottery Scholarship, its very easy to get distracted and get caught up in all the fun.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico (Main Campus) is a great place to get your basic college education started. There are always great activities, clubs to get involved in, and of course the NCAA sports. If you're looking for a fun experience UNM is for you!

    Campus Safety

There have been a handful of dangerous events in my years at this school, but there are many precautions as well. Make note of the blue emergency calls and don't be afraid to ask for an escort.

    Clubs and Activities

If you like it, there is a club for it. If there isn't, you can start one. It's not hard at all.

Great for these types of students

If you're a non-traditional student who is working, needs to take online classes, is returning, etc, this university is really catered for you.

    What to do for fun

Check out Albuquerque! Even if you've lived here all your life, there's a lot more around than you think. Check out the porn stores for fun (Self Serve is the best I've ever seen), do campus events, go to the zoo or museums. We've got a lot to offer.

    Food and Dining

Lots of options if you know what you are doing. Learn from the upperclassmen, especially in the dining hall.

    Dorm Life

Dorms weren't fantastic, but a great way to make friends. Many are being renovated currently, so I don't know the current states.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes you can cruise though, but then what's the point? There are many difficult classes and a lot of reading to do.

    Tips for prospective students

Always double check your own classes, because advisers can and will be wrong. Constantly make sure your classes are counting towards your major. Live on campus as least one year, and go to events. Get into clubs. Don't skip class--you'll get into the habit and won't stop. Take advantage of everything on and near campus. Learn the bus system.

    In three sentences

A university with many good classes and great teachers--but a good amount of bad classes and teachers as well. Do not expect to graduate in 4 years, though they are working on making it less complicated. Typically a good education though.

    What to do for fun

The University offers many clubs and organizations to be a part of. For example, I am joining the UNM Spirit Marching Band Color Guard. There are fraternities, sororities, sports, and many more clubs available. If there is a club that isn't available, the school will help fund a student to start that particular club. Albuquerque is also a fairly large city with much to offer. Hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, skiing, snowboarding, etc. is available in the area.

    Food and Dining

There are many venues to choose from in the Student Union Building, such as Sonic. However, the university's cafeteria is called La Posada, and it is set up like a buffet. Freshmen living on campus are required to purchase a meal plan through La Posada. There are various meal plans available. If the student is not living on campus, like me, we can still eat there but will have to pay for each meal individually. Outside of campus there are many diverse restaurants in walking distance, for example, Greek food.

    Dorm Life

There are various types of dorms available to students. In fact, this year the campus finished a new set of dorms called, Casas del Rio. Unlike traditional dorms, which the school still provides, these dorms are designed like a suit. Four people, of the same gender, share a bathroom instead of the entire floor sharing a bathroom. I am currently not living in the dorms, however, it sounds like a fun opportunity to meet new people and be closer to resources on campus.

    Academic Rigor

It is important to be independent and self motivated when attending college. If classes become too challenging, however, The University of New Mexico offers a tutoring program, CAPS, that is completely free to students. CAPS is available to students in many subject areas and in convenient hours.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico is welcoming and has a nice environment. The College Enrichment Program offered by the university helps students interact with other students and allows them to feel confident in choosing classes and being on campus. The university is filled with students that have an enormous amount of school spirit which creates a friendly community on campus.

    Campus Safety

Although UNM is a fun campus and has a lot to offer, it has it's drawbacks, one of them being safety. Safety wouldn't really be an issue for me I would say, but there have been some rare cases that have been reported. UNM has put almost a complete stop to that by installing safe buttons all around campus and within a minute of pressing the button, campus security is at that specific station and attending to you.

    Greek Life

There are 8 associations on campus I believe. Although I'm not involved in this life on campus, from what I see, it's amazing and looks like a lot of fun.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs to get involved in. some are big, some are small, but either way every club that I've ever been involved in has always been an amazing experience and I've met so many people through these clubs. Most UNM students are involved in something.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hanging in the Greens is a long standing UNM tradition; around Christmas time, students light bags with candles in them all the way to the presidents house on campus, while caroling around campus. Basketball is huge at UNM, and if you're not at a basketball game you're basically along the whole day. Red Rally is a huge bonfire in the middle of University's, Johnson Field, and when the football team plays our rivals to the south, New Mexico State, students build a huge paper Aggie and we burn it the night before the game.

    Bang for the buck

For New Mexico residents, as well as out of state students, UNM offers many scholarships. Even if students don't receive scholarships, UNM is a very affordable college to attend. Overall, UNM is a very affordable college to attend.

    What to do for fun

There are always activities going on on campus especially during homecoming week. For example, various pep rallies before major games and student organized activities like Red Rally. There is also always some kind of performance going on around campus at all times.

    Food and Dining

La Posada is the main dining hall for students on meal plans at UNM and the food is always good there, offering traditional New Mexican cuisine that makes eating there feel a lot more like home. Around campus, there are also restaraunts at the student union building and at the UNM Bookstoore. UNM's food is amazing.

    Dorm Life

UNM just recently built new dorm and apartment complexes for students, one on campus, and one off campus. Living at dorms here isn't boring at all, there are always activities and special events that the dorms put on for students living there. It's never a dull moment living on campus at UNM.

    Academic Rigor

UNM is very good with academics. Every class very interesting and feels comfortable and laid back, but at the same time, teachers are very strict and require your absolute best. They inspire you to try your best.

    Tips for prospective students

For incoming students, it's important to know where all of the university provided academic help is. UNM offers so many tutoring opportunities, and it's very helpful in the long run. It's also important to meet all of your professors and get to know them very well as the semester progresses.

    In three sentences

    Food and Dining

Students living on campus are required to purchase a meal plan. The food is buffet style with different choices everyday. If you don't like what is being offered, daily there is a sanwhich area and a great salad bar with different fruits as well.

    Dorm Life

Living on campus is something that everyone should do for at least a year. You meet so many new people and it's easy to get involved when you're always on campus. The dorms here are typical in style but we offer several different variations to choose from.

    Academic Rigor

We have a variety of classes to meet all student interests. Many of our courses are challenging but that's how college should be! We offer tutoring services and other types of reviews and help for all courses!

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved in something! Our school has so many different clubs and student organizations. If none of these interest you, just start your own!

    In three sentences

This is a great school socially and academically. For any class I always feel there is avaliable help when needed. Being in such a large city there is always something to do either on campus or events going on in the city.

The University of New Mexico is located in a populated area, which offers many different types of restaurants. One can always go to Student Union Building, to find restaurant favorites on a smaller scale.

    Dorm Life

I do not personally live in the dorms at UNM, but I'll through the dorms daily and it seems fantastic to be so close to class. All the dorms feel like high-end hotels, and all the students seem to be more than comfortable.

    Academic Rigor

I am very satisfied with the academics over at UNM. Luckily, the professors have been great at teaching, rather than having students memorize. The books are very referenced to, but hardly used in classes so far, allowing the classes to be more hands on and full of intellectual conversation.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico is great all around. The other students are friendly and helpful, and the professors are actually interested in you and willing to make time to assist you. The overall environment is calming and the University offers many great places to study and be tutored.

There are a number of options available. On campus there is a theater that shows movies in the middle of the week, there is a billiards room with arcade games, and there is the gym. Campus Safety

Overall, UNM is a very safe campus. There are Blue Emergency boxes that are all through out campus that you can use if necessary. The University also offers an escort service so that if you ever feel unsafe, an officer will walk you to your room or car.

    Greek Life

Greek life is great! Especially if you want to be involved in other organizations in the University, like Senate, Greek life can be a great way to meet people. You definitely make lasting friendships that will last forever.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The SUB and the Duck pond are definitely places where you can find some interesting people. Once, when I was hanging out between classes at the duck pond, a homeless Native American man took his shoes and shirt off, jumped in the pond, then proceded to scoop up the water in his mouth and then get out and spit the water in a nearby flower bed. It was weird to say the least. Every fall many different events go on that some may find strange. We take the mascot of our in state rivals, the Aggies, and build a giant cowboy and set it on fire. It is much like UNM's version of Zozobra (if you don't know what that it is just google it).

    Bang for the buck

The only complaints that I have is the increasing rate of tuition and the meal plan prices.

    What to do for fun

The community that I live in offers lots of free events where you can get, most of the time, free food or a free movie just for attending. I am currently a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and I spend plenty of time with my sisters at the house or in the library studying. Many time, my friends and I will go longboarding, bombing all the parking structures, even though it isn't allowed.

    Food and Dining

La Posada is not the best quality food in the world but its hard to complain. It is really convenient and they are pretty decent hours when you can grab some food and take it back to your room or on your way to class or if you just need a place to eat and study. The SUB is great, with multiple levels you can be in a quieter place or if you want, have lunch on the main level with all your friends! There is always something fun going on no matter what it is!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great, I currently live in the Laguna/Devargas complex and although it is a lot different then living at home, it is an experience that I would recommend to incoming freshmen! My roommate and I get along really well and everyone has given me a sense of community that I've never really experienced before. Its also really convenient to live on campus. I mean, sure, its not your own apartment but it is nice being able to wake up 15 minutes before you have to leave for class and the most amount of commuting that you have to do is walk or ride your bike/longboard there.

    Academic Rigor

I think that it is hard to give UNM a grade for academic rigor because it is very different for each student, and what their abilities are in comparison to what their major is.

    Tips for prospective students

I would highly recommend to new students to get involved! I am at the end of my first semester here and I wish I had gotten involved sooner. Also, don't take for granted every second of free time that you have to study. What they don't tell you in high school, is that college is really pretty hard if you don't make an effort to try. It can be easy to get behind and just decide not to go to class but if you keep up with it, its smooth sailing!

    In three sentences

I would rate UNM a 7.5 out of 10. Overall, UNM is a great school; there are many things to get involved in and there are always things to do. Unfortunately, the Advisement Center isn't as helpful as I would like.

Recently there has been a movement to create more campus safety, there is an event where students go out at night around campus and check for safety.

Considering its location it is not an odd location, people dress up and create parades of sorts for Dia de los Muertos. Also in the begining of the year there is an event called Red Rally where an effigy is burnt.

    Food and Dining

The location that UNM is in allows for us to eat pretty much anything. There is a cafeteria where the school also provides for food for people who have meal plans which also make it more affordable to eat.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms, but many of my friends do, there are variety of activities between dorms and competitions.

    Campus Safety

There are routine patrols on campus but these were cut drastically in a cost saving measure. You need to be aware of your surroundings more now than in the recent past.

    Greek Life

There are sororities and fraternities on campus but past activities brought attention to misdeeds and practices.

    Clubs and Activities

There seems to be a club for everyone and everything and if there isn't, you may be encouraged to start one.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to think of themselves as free from parental authority. Did I mention this is a party school and little emphasis is placed on student responsibility.

    Bang for the buck

This is not a top rated school but for those of us who live here, one of the few choices available. Usually better schools seem to party less, pay attention to studies and less to sports, and appreciate their students.

    What to do for fun

There many parties on and off campus and many activities organized around student life and interests.

    Food and Dining

Machines and vendors supply much of the food on campus but the surrounding area is rich in ethnic diversity and varieties of different food.

    Dorm Life

This is known party school. Some people are just smarter and afford the time but others, like myself need the grades.

    Academic Rigor

There are hard to very hard courses and then there are the gimme courses but you get out what you put in when learning.

    Tips for prospective students

UNM is a diverse ethnic mixture, sometimes to creating their own problems by their militancy and single minded outlook. Get the information you need from teachers and other successful students as the administration is guarded about how much they want to tell students. Otherwise this is a fairly effective school.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico has excellent teachers in the sciences but the administration treats us like a necessary evil. Sports are the paramount importance to the University and every student has to supplement the cost. Information that is needed is treated on a need to know basis and is often withheld unless specifically asked for and is like wrestling with a mama bear over her cubs.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in the dorms, though my impression of the dorms has been that they are small and sort of dingy.

    Academic Rigor

While there is opportunity to learn a great deal in the classes, I have found that where little is demanded little is learned. If there isn't a direct correlation between reading and such, there is little incentive to do so. While I don't enjoy reading, I find that I learn much more when I do read course materials.

    Tips for prospective students

I have found that the best way to learn is to interact with students and teachers in discussions during lectures. Asking questions and raising concerns are very effective ways to learn because by doing those two things you are engaging your mind in active learning rather than being bored to tears and subconsciously listening.

    In three sentences

I have attended UNM's Anderson School of Management for one semester and I have been impressed with several of the teachers and their knowledge, work experience, and their ability to relate the course materials to real life experiences and problems. For the most part course materials were good and supportive to learning. I feel however, that in many cases what was expected of students was below-par.

The location of down-town Albuquerque opens up doorways for students in terms of employment, and the UNM campus is easy on the eyes with trees, benches, and a duck pond. The pricing is decent for a state school, but the money is well spent since it results in a quality education.

    What to do for fun

Go out to eat down town, see a show at the Popejoy theater, go to the campus gym - between classes or during down-time, there's always something to do.

    Food and Dining

The food at LaPo is relatively good for a cafeteria setting, and the salad bar is always stocked. Besides the cafeteria food, there's various other options for eating on campus. There's snack shops in each of the larger buildings, the SUB has a plethora of fast food choices, and there are coffee shops at the library and book store. One never has to go hungry while at UNM.

    Dorm Life

I haven't had the opportunity to live at the dorms yet, thus I am applying for scholarships to live on campus next year. My friends who live at the dorms review them favorably.

    Academic Rigor

My classes are enjoyable and challenging. I enjoy the broad selection of course options, so even as a music student, I'm can take classes like art history and cardio aerobics. Since UNM is such a large school, the educational possibilities are endless.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay positive, and don't be afraid to talk to people you don't know!

    In three sentences

I was skeptical about attending UNM during my senior year of high school, but once I actually started college in the fall, I was won over. Both the students and teachers I've met here are very friendly. The courses are fun, the food options are diverse, and the campus is relatively well-maintained.

    Campus Safety

There are officers walking around everywhere, both on campus and in Lobo Village. There is also a number you can call if you want an escort to your car or to the shuttle bus station late at night.

    Clubs and Activities

Like I said earlier, sports are big here, so if you are a student-athlete like myself you have the support of literately everyone in the state. And the athletic facilities here are top notch, world class weight trainers and coaches with an extremely accessible and highly trained medical staff at your disposal 24/7.

    Bang for the buck

SO GOOD. I am from out of state, and as a transfer student who met the qualifications received the Amigo Scholarship, which basically made me a New Mexico resident in terms of applying. There are plenty of scholarships available, and the financial aid office is so amazing when it comes to explaining how everything works and where your money is going to and coming from.

    What to do for fun

Ummm, whatever you want? There are mountains close by for skiing/snowboarding/sledding when the weather is right, ice skating rinks, lazer tag places, bowling, supporting Lobo sports (New Mexico has no professional sports teams, so the sports at UNM get a lot of attention), and anything else you can think of. Except the beach. No beaches in New Mexico.

    Food and Dining

Since I'm in my own apartment I buy my own food - there are stores very close by and the kitchens here are amazing so I have no complaints - but as far as on campus dining goes there apparently isn't too much. A few chain places and I think one actual dining hall, but the dorms have their own kitchens as well so the people I know who are on campus cook a lot for themselves.

    Dorm Life

First, a clarification: I don't actually live in the dorms on campus. I live in off-campus housing called Lobo Village, which are 4 bedroom, 4 bath apartment suites for sophomore students and above who are attending UNM (they are extremely nice, full kitchen and washer/dryer and everything, check them out on their website http://lobovillage.com/). However, I've heard really good things about the dorms here, which also have their own kitchens and washer/dryer units (a huge plus for anyone who has had to deal with quarter units).

    Academic Rigor

As a transfer student, I can honestly say that UNM's academics are far more challenging and rewarding than those of my former university. The professors and TAs are all easily accessible and they are all easy to understand (no crazy accents to distract you from the material). This is a university where you will HAVE to go to class to get an A, but you're also actually going to learn something when you go so it is worth the effort.

    In three sentences

An amazing university in terms of academic and athletic quality. For out of state students be prepared for a huge change in weather; UNM is at altitude, which means that it does get freezing cold here despite the desert landscape (which I personally find quite beautiful. Also, altitude affects cooking and baking temperatures and times, you have been warned!).

There are many restaurants, bars, and fast food places around UNM. There are also inside UNM. Best place is Saggios, best pizza you will ever try in your life, and it is also quite big. There is also a buffet inside UNM, which is like their main dinning place called La Posada, the food is nor formidable but it is good. There is also many events within each semester where there is free food, especially at the beginning of the semester.

    Dorm Life

I can not rate the dorm life since I live off campus, but due to research projects and tournaments I have stayed in the dorms a few times. Unluckily I did not stay in the top quality dorms, but they made us stay in the cheapest ones. I gotat say for the cheapest ones they were alright.

    Academic Rigor

There are teachers, that give you many chances, but just as there are many teachers like that there are strict teachers that have the 1 try rule, you either succeed incredibly or fail in the most horrible way. I won't say that there are not easy breeze classes, but I have to state again about that UNM is primarily a research institution, which is very prestigious.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are undocumented, due to policy 582 in NM, it is a great state for undocumented Students. They are eligible to get into college and without been overcharge for their national status. It is a large diverse universities. States, countries, religion, political affiliation, national status, sexual orientation and age is the great deal of diversity in UNM. Therefore, it is a welcoming university, anyone that like diversity or feels like he or she wants acceptance, UNM is the place.

    In three sentences

University of New Mexico (UNM) has its own aspect, especially in the buildings it has a combination of modern-based and Spanish-New Mexican 17th century based buildings. It is a very welcoming college and it is not that expensive when comparing other universities from other states. Campus Safety

Safety is the most important factor to everyone. The University has an amazing system that provides safety to every student in campus. They provide blue post in every side walk to provide safety to those who feel unsafe; when no one is around.

    Clubs and Activities

The university provides many clubs and activities in which all students can be elected to attend.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Everything is not unusual so far that I have heard of before going to the fall.

    Bang for the buck

My bang for the buck is that the university is really expensive and as a low income student its hard to get enough financial aid. But the University offers payments in which students don't have to be worried that they can not have a good education as the university offers to everyone.

    What to do for fun

There are many options to have fun in the University. Their is always events going on as well they also provide a theater in which students and staff can attend to long prices.! which helps with the college budget.

    Food and Dining

The food is awesome, providing subs and options to eat is the best opportunity for every students to get food to go.

    Dorm Life

I have been in a program for six weeks and I have been staying in the Redando Village apartments; which has been an amazing experience. I can look for my recourses as soon as possible the staff are amazing and friendly, I love walking up in the morning to take a fresh run in the Johnson field.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor is the most outstanding; with its high level of excellence and education. That makes every student learning be unforgettable.

    Tips for prospective students

Always make sure to do your important paper work on time; and if you have concerns communicate with the university as soon as possible so no errors might accurse at the last minute.

    In three sentences

Its a overwhelming university; with high standards of education. The University of New Mexico wants their students to have the best education and experience they can get. As a research university students are asked to take their imagination to a more extended learning. Over all a overpowering university.

    Campus Safety

There have been several women attacked on campus at night or in the early morning. However, they are putting up more lights and emergency stations for calling the police in the event of an emergency. Still, you don't want to be walking around campus alone at night. There are often transient people wandering around at night and sometimes during the day since the school is located right on Central avenue. It's a good idea to carry pepper spray or something similar. Best idea is don't walk alone at night.

    Greek Life

I'm not involved in Greek life, but there is certainly a large presence of it on campus. They certainly throw a lot of shady parties.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a ton of clubs and activities offered through many departments as well as rec services.

Great for these types of students

Hard working and self-disciplined students will do best here.

    Bang for the buck

UNM is relatively inexpensive for what they offer. The education is great and there are lots of options.

    What to do for fun

UNM Recreational Services has a lot of field trips people can sign up for to do things like camping, hiking, rock climbing, ski/snowboarding, rafting, canoeing, etc. You name it, they probably have it. The gym is nice - has full weight room and cardio machines - but it is usually very crowded except for early mornings. The aquatics facility is very nice and they have lap swim. Johnson Field also holds a ton of outdoor sporting events on a regular basis. I've seen soccer, rugby, flag football, frizbee, lacrosse, thai chi, etc. The field has a 1/2 mile dirt track around it and the whole thing lights up at night for night-time sports.

    Food and Dining

The Student Union Building has several restaurants including a chick-fil-A, sonic, sandwich shop, deli, stir fry/ sushi place, pizza and coffee joint. The dorm room eatery La Posada is your typical cafeteria food. Not bad, but not great. I ate there a lot my first semester and it's a good way to gain a few pounds if you're not careful. Nonetheless, they have a wide variety of foods from all different types of cuisine.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is excellent if you like living near a bunch of people with paper thin walls between you and them. I spent my first freshman semester in Redondo dorms and I had 3 roommates I didn't know that constantly left a huge mess in the kitchen and didn't clean up after themselves. They also had random drunk people over late at night that would barge into my room. If you want to party, stay in the dorms. BUT, if you want to actually gain an education, rent a house with some roommates off campus. You'll save more money and can bypass all the other idiot freshmen that don't know what they're doing in college.

    Academic Rigor

The degree of academic rigor depends highly on the department you are majoring in. For example, I have found that the academic rigor in the Geography department is low, whereas it is higher in departments such as Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't expect professors at this University to hold your hand. If you want to do well, you need to have self discipline and a goal for your education. I found that I had to seek out the proper advisors to help me form an educational/career path. Don't bother with the Arts & Sciences advisors. Work directly with the advisors in your own department. My experience with the undergraduate Biology advisors was excellent. Don't stay in the dorms. They are very distracting and expensive. If you're going to live somewhere off campus, make sure you can walk or ride your bike/the bus because parking is very expensive and time consuming.

    In three sentences

UNM offers a wide range of degree programs, and in my experience, the Biology program is excellent for students interested in pursuing biological and interdisciplinary research. The campus is beautiful, conveniently located near restaurants and night life, and is constantly being improved. The recreational and sports facilities are very nice.

In December around Christmas, students participate in the Hanging of the Greens. As students walk around the campus caroling, luminarias (traditional New Mexican Christmas lights) are lit throughout the entire campus along with decorations. Another tradition we have is the burning of the Aggie; our rival school's (NMSU) mascot. During Red Rally, the students build a giant Aggie and at the end of Red Rally week, we burn the Aggie down!

The University offers many activities for the upcoming school year like Freshman week, where all incoming freshman are participating in activities such as dances and games. I am an incoming freshman, so I have not yet experienced the rigor of my courses. However, I have learned from friends that the work ranges from easy to very difficult. Although the work can be challenging, it helps them grow and understand the content that their studying.

    Tips for prospective students

Manage your time and make sure you're able to fit in study time. Also, make sure that you don't get in over your head and take more classes you think you're able to handle. I recommend taking La Posada (the dining hall) in proportions. I got sick of it after the first semester.

Some of the dorms are a better than others, but the dorm life is really nice at UNM. There are several different styles of dorms, and each have RA's that are there to make your dorm experience fun.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are incredibly easy, but others can be incredibly difficult. Most of the English classes are standard, but the science courses are very rigorous. Our math department is also known to be very rigorous in their curriculum and some of the hardest classes to pass.

    Tips for prospective students

A major tip of mine is to live on campus! It allows you to make several friends and you'll be more involved. Another tip is to use ratemyprofessor.com BEFORE registering for classes. Registration is often the most stressful thing besides finals, and you don't want to end up with horrible teachers. There are a lot of great ones, but a ton of crappy ones as well.

    In three sentences

Due to the fact that it is location in the middle of Albuquerque and has a large population of commuting students, there isn't a large on-campus life, meaning there aren't several on campus activities. The Professors at the University, through my experiences, have put together a fast pace but orderly curriculum to keep their areas of studies interesting throughout the semester.

    Tips for prospective students

It is important to seek an advisor to help choose the classes to apply toward your degree. The advisor's at the University of New Mexico may have additional insight about classes that may otherwise be overlooked. I found the advisors knowledge of the my current degree, my personal needs and goals very helpful for me to attain the classes for each semester.

There is a wide variety of foods and services on and around campus. There is a much wider variety off campus and requires some travel time ( so know how much time it takes to get to and from where your going, you' may be surprised on foot. However, on campus, there is a decent variety, and we have little Mercados which have snacks and drinks. It can be a little pricey so watch your budget.

    Dorm Life

I honestly don't know first hand. I have heard a range of comments of, its nice, alright, not so bad. There are newer dorms and older dorms. The older ones are cheaper but the oldest one would be very challenging to live in all semester. New one seem pretty nice from the outside.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes honestly take more time than others. It also depends on your current skills. You are going to school to learn so don't feel dumb if you don't get something. I often find that most course have a fair amount to read or review. If you stay on top of your work, talk with your professors and do your honest best then your golden.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Know yourself, you are in a new environment and it presents new highs and lows, So always move forward. 2. Balance. Time fly's when you flow with life, so flow in the most efficient way and you will be well and have more time to enjoy your flow. 3. Intent. Have a drive, you must be motivated to do something to the best of your abilities. Otherwise, you will be wasting every minute and dollar you invested in yourself to go to school 4. Explore. Keep your eyes and ears out for all kinds of opportunities in the local community. You may land a job, scholarships, friends, discover a new interest or connection in life.

    In three sentences

The unicersity of New Mexico is a clean and respectable accredited university. Although the first two years of schooling you run into many teachers who do not wish to relate to individual students within their overly crowded class size, the last two years of your degree you are surrounded by professors and students who create a learning environment with the sole goal of helping you succeed. The University of New Mexico does not get enough credit for the quality of education it provides.

    Academic Rigor

I always heard stories that the teachers in college don't care whether or not you showed up to class. After my first couple days on campus though, I realized all of it was wrong! Check out the SUB, downstairs there is a lot to do and organizations to check out.

    Food and Dining

La Posada is horrible... I would suggest bringing lunches. If you are a vegetarian or vegan living on campus I recommend not living on campus. The vegetables look quite unappealing. Ask anyone, the food is horrible. And the lobopoints (or whatever they are called) does not work well off campus, only certain places are you allowed to buy things at.

    Dorm Life

I don't live on campus. I have heard its not that great. It's expensive and things begin adding up. Its a good way to connect and meet different people, but if your a social butterfly you can make friends whether your living on campus or not.

    Academic Rigor

You get what you put into your education. Its your money, and if you care about that, then go to class, take notes, each class required 6-12 hours per week outside of class. Also if you have a lenient professor who says, you can turn in all of your assignments at the end of the semester, don't do that. You were able to procrastinate in high school, college, you really need to stay on top of your academics.

    Tips for prospective students

Ask yourself if you really want to live on campus. If so ask yourself, why? Is it cost efficient, and how will this benefit you? There are many free programs that are provided for you if you need assistance in certain subjects, use CAPS, this has been proven to give students a higher GPA and a better understanding of your class.

UNM provides a diverse academia, the professors are quite passionate which is the most important part. Finding your interests is possible, and UNM supports you every step of the way. Bang for the buck

I like to go the Satellite cafe in the Student Union building, instead of the location across the street on central because you can get a card stamped there. After a certain number of drinks, you earn a free beverage of your choice.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of clubs and student events at the University of New Mexico. Many of them are posted. UNM's website is a great resource to find out about events. The departmental staff members also send out emails to undergraduates about events.

    Food and Dining

There are lots of good cafes and restaurants in the Student Union Building. You can find a small cafes all over campus in the larger buildings if you need a quick snack or beverage.

    Dorm Life

I live off campus. I am not familiar with the Dorms.

    Academic Rigor

It varies from class to class. Some of the advanced classes are very rigorous while some of the lower level classes are casual.

    Tips for prospective students

Familiarize yourself with a campus map. It is a large campus and it is easy to get lost when you're new. Also find all the career and student services. You will be visiting these places a lot.

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

All around campus there are these emergency stations, where someone can press a button if they need help and campus security will be on their way. It's a great way to ensure safety on campus (especially at night). If you get out of a class late or something like that causes you to walk alone on campus at night, there's no need to worry. Campus security provides escorts back to the dorms if you feel uncomfortable. The only reason I can't give the safety a 5-star rating is due to the fact that UNM is an open campus, and you can never be too sure of who's going to be around or not. Security usually does a good job of keeping the creeps off campus, though.

    Greek Life

I am not in a frat, but those whom I know are in them seem to enjoy the Greek life very much. I know for a fact that there are multiple fraternities and sororities to join, and those who join form a lifelong bond with their brothers or sisters. Greek life will definitely keep you entertained, that's for sure.

    Clubs and Activities

As I said earlier, there are so many things to do on campus and so many clubs to join! There is always going to be something to do regardless of when it is!

Great for these types of students

Really, anyone would fit in at UNM. There is a huge student body, and most people are very friendly and accepting of others. As long as you're not a slacker, you'd fit in fine at UNM.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year, when UNM plays the first game against our rival (NMSU), we have a sort of... ritual that happens on campus. New Mexico State's mascot is an Aggie (it's like a cowboy), and UNM's is a Lobo (a wolf). On the night before the first football game, some students build a giant effigy of an Aggie on Johnson Field and burn it! It's called Red Rally, as our colors are cherry and silver, and after the effigy burns they bump some music and thousands of students have a great time out on the field!

    Bang for the buck

UNM gives you a wonderful experience and great learning facilities for how much it costs. It was the cheapest college that I found in my college search, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Look into UNM's scholarships; they're abundant and give amazing value. I would go so far as to say there is no school that compares to what you get here for the same price.

    What to do for fun

What can I say? The dorms always have stuff going on for those students who stay in them. The campus is huge, so bikers and skaters have a place to call home, too. Within walking distance is Nob Hill, which is the place for clothes shopping if you like to spend money. There is a pool hall where you can go and play some pool for a while. If you like working out, there is Johnson Gym. Clubs are prominent and they offer a wide range of activities as well. For example, there is a Hobbit Society for those LOTR fans, and there's also a hiking club whose members take frequent trips to the mountains to hike and rock climb. There is so much more stuff than just this - this is simply the tip of the iceberg!

    Food and Dining

I cannot stress enough how delicious the food is. Frontier Restaurant (featured on the Travel Channel's show, Man vs. Food) is literally right next to the campus and they are open until the early hours of the morning to accommodate for college students. There are also multiple coffee shops littered around campus and just off campus, as well as a few sandwich shops, the wonderful Italian bistro Saggio's, and some fast food locations (if that's what floats your boat). The Student Union Building (SUB) also has a food court which has some 8 or so fast food locations and a huge dining area where many students simultaneously study while grabbing a bite to eat.

    Dorm Life

Although I do not live in the dorms, I have visited a lot of my friends' dorm rooms and they are awesome. I am always seeing updates on Facebook of what they are all doing and I just know I'm missing out. The dorms have regular competitions between each dorm building, which provides a sense of community as well as a fun activity to do. Not to mention, UNM is located right in the middle of the coolest part of town so you're never far away from something to do or new places to check out.

    Academic Rigor

UNM provides the same classes as many of the more prestigious schools, which is something a lot of people overlook because of the low price. UNM's courses are taught by wonderful professors who know exactly what they are talking about. Because of this, the classes tend to be fairly simple, as everything is explained to you in a way that makes sense. There is also CAPS tutoring if some information needs to be explained in a different way. As long as you don't overload your schedule, there is plenty of time to make sure you understand the material being presented to you with more time still left over to go do fun things.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready for the college experience! Make sure that you are having a great time (which isn't too difficult) by utilizing the resources available on campus. For example, there are a lot of places in Zimmerman Library which are private and quiet study areas. No matter where you go, there will always be someone that will be willing and able to help you out so don't be afraid to ask questions about campus life and happenings. There are so many amiable people on campus that there is no way NOT to make new friends by just talking, which is something I would suggest. I suppose the most difficult aspect of going to UNM would be refraining from buying stuff at all of the restaurants and nick-nack stores next to campus!

    In three sentences

In my opinion, UNM is a great place to interact with people and be a part of a larger community. The school has a huge student body, and there are always some ways to get involved and have a fun time! The classes tend to be taught by amazing professors who are genuinely interested in their field of study, which makes UNM that much better of a university.

    Campus Safety

I have never personally felt unsafe anywhere on campus or at any time of night. There is some crime in neighboring communities that I hear of though.

    Clubs and Activities

The NSF STEP program is a huge help and assists in finding an internship program to take part in. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers attends the regional and national conferences and is quickly growing at UNM.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to enjoy a social life while still receiving a valuable education and having research opportunities in the area.

    Food and Dining

I love New Mexican food. The dining hall always has some green and red chile which can make any meal amazing. Also, the student union building is full of good choices to eat at. I have become very fond of the Mandalay Express.

    Dorm Life

The dorms have one major issue. Bugs. The first floor of most dorms get cockroaches during the winter season. Other than that, there is free laundry, printing, and the housing is right next to the dining hall.

    Academic Rigor

UNM is the second University that I have attended and the coursework is relatively easy. Many students here have low expectations and it shows in their classes. You can make it a better university by pushing yourself and ensuring you take it upon yourself to stay active.

    Tips for prospective students

Look for scholarships to make UNM basically free. Try to move into on campus living in order to meet other students and to get to know the campus better. Sporting events area great way to socialize and meet people, but joining major specific clubs will get you much more involved in a field you want to enter professionally.

    In three sentences

University of New Mexico is a good research institution based on its location near the national laboratories. With that in mind, the educational level of many classes is below that of higher ranking institutions. If you want a good mixture of social activity and good base work education, than this is a good school to choose.

The Duck Pond is a great place to hang out with friends or have a study session outdoors. One of the BEST UNM traditions has got to be RED RALLY. Every year before the football team takes on rival NMSU, we build a giant Aggie out of napkins and light it on fire and spend the night watching it burn. It's a great time and everyone enjoys watching the rival burn!

    Food and Dining

On campus there are so many options for food, it's spectacular! At the Student Union Building there is a Saggio's Pizza, Eli's Burgers, Garcia's, NY Deli, Chick-fil-a, and Satellite Coffee. Throughout campus there are Outtakes which is like a gas station convenience store with all the snacks you could think of. Then there is the cafeteria, La Posada, where the food is well to put it simply cafeteria food. The food at LaPo is good, but you can tell it's made in bulk and has room for improvement, but still is close to mom's home cooking.

I live in campus and I love it! I have met so many amazing people in my dorm hall! My roommate this semester was from Cameroon, Africa which had its challenges since she didn't fluently speak English, but we made it work. I love the dorms, they aren't the greatest dorms I saw when I was doing the college search, but they offer really everything you REALLY need while at college.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are hard if you don't study, I learned that the hard way in Sociology 101. If you take time out of class to study and read the textbooks though the classes are much easier to tackle.

    Tips for prospective students

GREEN CHILE IS A LIFESTYLE NOT A CONDIMENT! As an out of state student it has been an adjustment fr me dealing with green chile on EVERYTHING, but it's really great! Be prepared to never look at food the same way again.

    In three sentences

The greatest part for me about UNM is the fact that there are so many opportunities to do great things even as a freshman. I have learned so much about different cultures and people though my time at UNM. I honestly just LOVE it, I have no idea where I'd be right now if it wasn't for the opportunities that I have received because of UNM.

    Academic Rigor

I've heard that the UNM College of Nursing focus on written assignments and power point projects. Proper format is critical to the grading process. The UNM advisor told me that nursing school is very challenging but rewarding and likened it to having a full-time job.

    Tips for prospective students

Research which classes you will need for specific degree/major. Take advantage of all available resources, such as free tutoring. Make time to study and use a calendar to keep track of your time. Discipline yourself to study before going on social media sites or any other distractions.

I found the staff at the UNM College of Nursing to be extremely helpful and genuine. Also, there are multiple resources to help current students to succeed. I highly recommend the University of New Mexico to anyone interested in earning a bachelor's in nursing.

    Campus Safety

Not many crimes occur on campus and there is many emergency phones around campus which contact police directly. However, it should be noted that the University itself is placed in one of the busiest places in Albuquerque.

    Greek Life

UNM does not have as predominant a Greek life as other schools. It does offer a variety of fraternities and sororities for those who are interested. I find that the laid-back Greek life helps to foster a sense of academia.

    Clubs and Activities

With over 400 clubs and activities, the University of New Mexico has something to offer everyone. And if there is an activity that you are interested in and doesn't exist, you can start your own club and are more than likely to find people who are interested in the same thing you are.

Great for these types of students

Those who are looking for a big school with lots of options. Great if you aren't exactly sure what you want to do. UNM makes it pretty easy to change your mind.

The Hanging of the Greens is a Christmas celebration where a large group of people go around campus and sing Christmas carols and look at all of the lumenarias.

    Bang for the buck

The school is a great option for New Mexico residents. It does get more expensive for out-of-state residents, but overall still a pretty good deal. There is a constant strive to modernize learning at UNM which hopes to integrate technology to all its potential.

    What to do for fun

Albuquerque is a city with plenty of activities. There is many outdoor activities with the Sandia Mountains, the Rio Grande, and the Petroglyphs all very close by.

    Dorm Life

As mentioned above, your college experience is what you make of it. The community associations at UNM offer many activities for dorm residents to enjoy. Just show up!

    Academic Rigor

UNM can be demanding but relative to other schools, I would say it is very easy. It all depends on what you make of it.

    Tips for prospective students

UNM is for you if you are looking for a range of experiences. The school is not as expensive as many others and it offers the opportunity to grow.

    What to do for fun

The campus hosts many student-friendly events every year such as a zombie run and red rally. The city of Albuquerque also has a huge theatre and movie community so catching a show is really no problem (if you can afford it of course). Most of downtown and nobhill closes down at around 9pm but it is still possible to find nightlife around town if you really search for it.

    Food and Dining

While the food quality is not exactly gourmet there's a variety of foods to be found at UNM. Unlike other universities I have visited, UNM has its own dining hall/cafeteria. There are also a number of dining options in the SUB Union Building and small Mercado shops located throughout the campus.

    Academic Rigor

This depends on the academic rigor of the student as well as the classes to be taken and the major. There are a variety of classes to be taken at UNM to fit any student's needs. Either way, I would not say there are easy or hard classes at UNM because you really can get anything out of any class.

    Tips for prospective students

Often times, financial aid and admissions can be a little frustrating so DO NOT be afraid to be persistent when asking about submitted paperwork. For in-state students, I would not discount UNM as it surprised me.

    In three sentences

UNM surprisingly, exceeded my expectations. The friendliness of campus life, location to the city, and breadth of academics really impressed me.

If you can, take advantage of the gym. They have some great equipment, and it is free to all enrolled students. There is also a great rock climbing gym, Stone Age, not too far from campus with students discounts.

    Food and Dining

There are many selections on and around UNM campus. Many of the on-campus sights (though not all) are very pricey, but just across the street are countless fast food as well as sit-in restaurants that are perfect for daily lunch. That is something I have really appreciated my four years in college!

    Dorm Life

I never lived in the dorms, but I worked as a tutor in a few of them. UNM has revamped many of the dorm rooms, making them look very nice. But I have heard horror stories about what goes on in college dorms from close friends and students I used to tutor. Still, it would be nice to live so close to campus.

    Academic Rigor

It's really up to you what classes you take. There are always the easy ones, and the more challenging ones; just like any other college.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be lazy. Get to know your professors, and let them show you how you can get a head start on your future career. I wished I had been as dedicated in my studies the first few years of college than just now, as a Senior, finding the amazing opportunities UNM has to offer.

    In three sentences

One thing I admire about UNM is the beautiful campus that is easy to navigate. It's a large campus, but the administration is usually very good at keeping similar subjects in classrooms and buildings that are close to one another. I also love the faculty-student relationships; if you are committed, you could really get your foot in the door to some amazing opportunities.

    Campus Safety

UNM-PD has emergency towers around campus that you can press to send a call in case of an emergency, but, as previously stated, campus isn't well-lit at night. I haven't heard of anything of huge concern happening, though.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Red Rally - There is a massive rivalry between UNM and NMSU and every year, on the Thursday before the big rivalry football game, UNM constructs and then burns a giant effigy of NMSU's mascot. NMSU does a similar thing with our mascot.

    Bang for the buck

It's a fairly nice university and I feel like I'm truly improving in various aspects of my life, socially and academically.

    What to do for fun

UNM often has events going on in the SUB, such as Craft Fairs, conventions, live entertainment, and last year Sony was on campus for three days with a bunch of PS3s and PSVitas with preloaded games that were free to play.

    Food and Dining

La Posada (La Po) doesn't have too much variety for the most part, and I often found myself repeatedly just getting pizza or a burger and fries. It's buffet-style, so you can get however much you want, but be careful as it is very high in calories. Another complaint I've heard from friends here is that they sometimes get sick from eating at La Po. I've never had this issue, but I have a pretty strong stomach.

    Dorm Life

I'm living in Casas del Rio, so I have a fairly large room comparatively, and it's all very new. However, they were sort of rushed to be built, so there are constant problems (elevator issues, power-outages, malfunctioning washers and dryers), but they are infrequent enough that it's only a minor annoyance. You also have to pay for your laundry at CDR and pay rent monthly. From what I've heard and seen of other dorms on campus, though, it's worth it.

    Academic Rigor

The science and math departments are very, very difficult. I'm a biology major and have had to retake a chemistry class and two math classes. Other departments don't seem as difficult, as I've aced all of the classes I've taken outside of STEM.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have at least ten minutes to get between classes, and try to plan out a small break between classes if you can, or have classes in neighboring buildings. If you have a night lab, it's best to walk with someone else on your way back, as the campus isn't very well lit at night, and though I haven't had any accidents, it's better safe than sorry. There are also sometimes homeless on campus, but that isn't as prevalent this year. Central is known as one of the sketchy parts of Abq, which is where campus is, so be careful wandering around there alone. RateMyProfessor is a fantastic tool: use it when planning courses. Be careful what you get at La Posada (the cafeteria on campus) as it's very high in calories most of the time and you can, and will, very easily gain weight. When professors give you assignments that aren't due for a grade, do them anyway. It'll help your performance on tests.

    In three sentences

Somewhat spread out, but not excessively so. Pretty diverse student body. Strong STEM program.

Promotion of these clubs can get a little better.

    Food and Dining

There are options such as restaurants in the Student Union Building, the on-campus cafeteria (La Posada), and other places that are similar to convenient-stores all throughout campus. Other options include, Chick Fil-A, Starbucks, Einstein's Bagels and more!

    Dorm Life

Housing options include options from different companies that are both on and off-campus. There are many on-campus dorms that are dispersed in different areas on-campus so that you can decide which dorm location will be best for you. Other options that are off-campus are a little bit more aesthetically appealing and have free shuttle-services to campus, they do cost a little bit more.

    Academic Rigor

Academic rigor is a little bit above average. A lot of classes require doing online homework whether it be on UNM Learn or another website, so that gives a lot of flexibility to students but other classes will have requirements such as meeting with peers, blog assignments, or weekly quizzes that you really have to stay on top of and study regularly for. My advice is to study regularly and keep track of everything so that the subject matter of the classes won't seem as difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready for anything and always pay attention. You never know what kind of professor you will have. Some are easy-going and some are extremely strict.

    In three sentences

The University of New Mexico is an enriching, spirited, and great school. I have had the best help that I could possibly get from all of the offices (financial aid, advisement, and Student Health & Counseling). Also, I have had a better attitude toward continuing my education and toward the UNM community as wholes.
