    Great for these types of students

    Because of its diversity, UNC is appropriate for ANY type of student. No matter what type of person you are, you will fit right in because everyone is so different. Campus is like a melting pot of people of different race, gender, orientation, income level, and so on; and since the student population is so large, you are almost guaranteed to find a friend or a group that shares your same interests!
    Tips for prospective students

    Upon applying, make sure your essays are well written and revised! There isn't an exact GPA or SAT/ACT score that will guarantee you admission at this University, so you shouldn't get too consumed with that. A well rounded student is preferred so an amazing GPA and no extracurriculars will not get you very far. Be prepared for the transition from high school to college, academically and socially. As cliche as this sounds, do this by staying level headed and remembering why you are in school. Determination and hard work are exactly what you should have to get accepted and do well at UNC!
    Bang for the buck

    This University is renowned as having top tier academic programs; some have even referred to it as a southern ivy league school. With this revered quality in education, it is astonishing that the tuition is less than $17,000 dollars a year, whereas other institutions that rival the prestige of UNC are over $35,000 a year. At Carolina you are definitely getting more than what you are paying for, I would consider it the steal of the century!

    The great academics are one major plus, but the social scene makes this the ideal college environment! Located in a safe community, this University has everything an undergraduate could ask for. Local places to eat, entertaining attractions, and a world renowned area (Franklin st.) that is home to some of the university's biggest celebrations (i.e: the celebrations of the 2009 NCAA Basketball championship & the 2008 presidential election). It is also a short distance from Durham, home of the famous Minor League Durham Bulls and Raleigh, the states capital! No matter the day of the week, the University of North Carolina is very enjoyable for its students!
    Am learning a lot

    Although some of the classes are large, students have the opportunity for some one on one time with professors and teaching assistants through office hours and smaller versions of lectures called recitations. So no matter the class size, you are given the individual attention of an instructor. This is VERY beneficial during exam time!

    Great for these types of students

    UNC Chapel Hill is a larger university, and as mentioned, is a diverse place. If you love meeting new and different types of people, this school is perfect for you. In regard to academics, there are fewer better options out there for the price and excellence of the education you can obtain at UNC. This college was my first choice, and I have been blessed to be able to attend it, because it is now my only choice. Excellent school, excellent, environment, and an excellent education. Five stars all around. (and let's not forget UNC Basketball!)
    Tips for prospective students

    You application should reflect YOU in the purest form. Be honest, and be yourself. UNC is a place that prides itself on diversity, so there is nothing too 'weird' for any of us! Take the time to revise and think through your essays as best as you can; these for me were what really made my application stand out because I LOVE to write. But even if you do not share that sentiment, hope is not lost! Chapel Hill looks for well-rounded individuals, people who've invested themselves in multiple areas, but have also committed to certain things and have followed through with them. For me, this was marching band, which I did all four years of high school. For you, it might be something different. But be sure to share all of your interests and accomplishments, so that UNC will see the fullest picture of you possible - students who are motivated, accomplished, and true to themselves, cliche as it may sound, are the types of folks Chapel Hill looks for.
    Bang for the buck

    While I have not attended other universities in addition to this one, I am confident in saying that a UNC education is an excellent deal for minimal amount of financial difficulties I have had. The financial aid office is always helpful and has worked with me to find options for paying for school. I am an RA in the Upper Quad community, and this has really helped me as a source of income during the year in addition to the excellent leadership skills I have built. If you do not decide that an RA position is your cup of tea, there are plenty of on-campus options for jobs during school, especially on Franklin street in downtown Chapel Hill and with the university (Undergrad Library, Honor Court, Teaching Assistants). Whatever you choose, UNC is affordable enough to where you can find a way to pay for school!

    I have enjoyed every minute of it. I was intimidated by the size of the school at first, but I found quickly that in such a diverse campus, you can always find someone just like you and someone completely unlike you that you still get along with just as well! Being in the UNC Marching Tar Heels, I've made some awesome friends already, and involvement in this organization has helped me get in touch with my 'school spirit' side - football and basketball games, Fallfest, parades...it makes the experience so much more personal, and lays testament to the fact that Tarheels are all a big family, and always will be.
    Am learning a lot

    I have personally learned a great deal in all of my classes taken thus far. Difficult courses like Chemistry 101 and Latin (the hardest in the Classics dept.) have not been a walk in the park, but I've found that I tend to come out of those classes knowing more because they required more out of me! Yet all the courses I have taken have been enriching in their own way, and I have not had a single bad professor yet; everyone is different and gets along differently with others, but I feel that each of the staff at UNC Chapel Hill is easy to get along with when you show an interest in their subject and a willingness to succeed. This, for me, creates the ideal learning environment.

    UNC is a great place for all students as it is a great value, has excellent academics, and diverse extracurriculars. Because of the size of the university, many diverse student organizations exist where students can find like-minded individuals. The area around Chapel Hill is suitable for those who like cities or rural areas because of its close proximity to bigger cities like Raleigh and Durham and smaller farm communities in rural Orange and Chatham counties.
    Tips for prospective students

    A well-rounded student is among the most-desired by admissions at UNC. Make sure to include extracurriculars like athletics, student politics, and/or volunteering in addition to good grades and a decent SAT. Spend time on the essay as this is a integral part of the application and your chance to shine!
    Bang for the buck

    UNC is an excellent value college. Kiplinger consistently rates UNC among the best values in the nation! Compared to nearby Duke University, UNC students can receive a similar degree for less than half the price. Not bad for a public university. The cost of living in the surrounding community is rather cheap and finding a job isn't hard considering the growing economy of the region and the wealth of businesses surrounding Chapel Hill.

    Set in a small town not far from just about everything, there isn't much not to love about UNC. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of classes and academic life, just relax on the beautiful and historic campus of the nation's oldest public institution, head to Franklin street for the typical college town experience, or catch a free bus ride to nearby Carrboro and relax in the Bohemian city center. There's also never a shortage of things to do on campus, as students can watch the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball champions for free in the Dean Dome, meet like-minded people in student organizations, or watch a movie in the student union.
    Am learning a lot

    UNC Chapel Hill is a great place to learn a lot about just about everything. There are a great variety of courses and majors and UNC Chapel Hill is known nationally for its expert professors and excellent instruction. Like many students, you may come looking to major in one area of expertise and find that the motivated and exceptional professors convince you to major in a different area. That's okay though, considering that UNC has a large variety of majors available and a degree in any offered major is sure to leave you an expert in your concentration.

    Great for these types of students

    This school is great for those students who are academically motivated. It is not at all for the slacker. It also wouldn't do for those students who like the city scene, because, while Raleigh is right next door, it is hard to get there without a car, and it's not a city like New York or Boston that you could just wander aimlessly about; you need a destination. This school has an extremely large student body, so it's great for those who want a large and diverse population. It's great for students who like to get involved because there are so many student organizations. Despite it's liberal arts status, I would not recommend this school for students who have no idea whatsoever of what they want to do. With the way the school is set up, a student only has two years to get their core requirements done as well as their pre-requisites for the major they intend to do. For example, a student who come in and intends to major in history, but if midway through his sophomore year he decides to do nursing there is no way that he'll have enough time to get all of his pre-requisites done in time to apply to the nursing school for his junior year. This school is wonderful for those who want a nationally recognized school both for sports and academics.
    Tips for prospective students

    While GPA is very important, focus on being well-rounded and the essays. Everyone student and applicant had a great GPA in high school, but the admissions committee want to make sure that intelligent pool is well rounded. Do as much community service as you can; it is becoming more and more important in any college admissions process. Also, try to stress the leadership activities and those activities in which you were dedicated to for more than one year.

    This is a great value school, especially for in-state students. The tuition is only about $15,000 for one of the best educations in the country. Unfortunately there is not much by way of on-campus jobs. The majority of on-campus jobs are offered through work study, which can only be received by the federal government. The Rec center, the libraries and the Union do hire non-work study students, but those jobs go quick, so be sure to grab them as soon as possible. Other than that, students would have to resort to Franklin Street which can be a 20-30 minute walk from some dorms. Also, Franklin only provides food and retail jobs, so people who don't work well in those situations are out of luck. Also, many of the food services on Franklin do not close on the weekends until after the P2P stops running so a walk home in the middle of the night would be necessary if you don't have a car (which you most likely won't if you are a first-year). There are a lot of jobs advertised in the Daily Tar Heel everyday, so those in dire need of a job can surely find something.

    While UNC is a great school, it is not for everyone. The campus is very suburban and confining if you do not have a car, so getting around for first-years can be very difficult. It is a gorgeous campus with plenty of fields to play soccer on, but it is not for people who like to get out and explore, as there is not much town to explore. There are hundreds of clubs on campus so every personality, from type-A to hippies, can find some place that feeds their interests. Franklin Street does have tons of places to eat and shop, but the shopping is expensive. The best place on Franklin is the Varsity Theater which has classic movies and new movies playing for only $3! The sports are obviously wonderful, but those students who do not care for a great sports team, may find it hard to fit in because sports are everything. Greek life is very predominant on this campus and it is easy to avoid if you don't like it. This school does have a place for everyone, but if you can't find that place it's not the most enjoyable atmosphere.
    Am learning a lot

    With this being a grade-A institution, the academics are wonderful. There are huge lecture classes balanced out with small classes having only about 20 people. In the lecture classes there are usually one to two Teacher's Assistants in addition to the professor's office house so one-on-one help is always available despite the large class setting. One thing I would recommend, Do NOT bring your laptop to lecture classes unless it is required. It is a lot easier to take notes on a piece of paper rather than type them because Facebook is ALWAYS a distraction. Some professors don't even allow computers in their lecture classes. There are numerous places to study (and sleep) on campus whether it be one of the three undergraduate libraries, an empty classroom, Starbucks, the Student Union, or even the quad. There are also numerous help centers on campus, from the Math Help center to the Writing Help center, to tutoring groups throughout the semester, especially come exam time. As long as you put in a decent amount of effort into your school work, you are guaranteed to learn a lot.

    Students from small towns will enjoy all of the attractions and Students from larger cities with enjoy the quite serene community with still lots of fun places to go and see. Great to enjoy country life without being in the country. Transportation (bus) will take you just about anywhere for $1.00 per trip.

    Chapel Hill, North Carolina is a great unique college town setting. Access to many great things without being in a big city. Close to Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina. Lots of accommodations for learning and fun.

    Its a great place for students that have a whole bunch of school spirit. If you don't like crowds, you can escape the hustle and bustle in the gardens.

    There are lots of things to do when you get bored. Franklin Street has a whole bunch of vintage stores and restaurants. Athletic events are great and its really easy to get in to men's basketball games all you have to do is apply through the student lottery.

    People who study well, but not necessarily study a lot, will get the most out of their years at Chapel Hill. UNC has an amazing social network, but having time to go out after homework is critical to enjoying all the events and activities offered. Students have to study extremely efficiently to maintain good grades and still have extra time to party like a Tar Heel.

    Chapel Hill isn't all butterflies and basketball. It is a very prestigious university that is nationally ranked in superior academics as well as sports. That said, keep in mind that if you attend this school, you will be taking classes and competing with some of the top students in the nation. The classes are seriously difficult and if you plan on doing well in college, make sure you can put forth at least as much energy into you school work as you do cheering against Duke!

    Tips for prospective students

    Get as much credit out of the way even if they are random APs - there are a LOT of gen ed requirements so the more you don't have to worry about, the better. Also, do not underestimate how much you are going to need to study - there are plenty of times when the teacher will not go over or review things that you need to know for an exam, and especially not homework - be prepared to do a lot of outside work.

    Yes the tuition is a bargain for in-state students, but there are tons of extra fees - for pretty much every class you have to pay another $20 - $35 to buy some sort of online supplement.

    I love the school spirit and enthusiasm for the sports (and the fact that we have good sports in the first place) but sometimes its annoying that life needs to be put on hold just because we have a basketball game (don't get me wrong though, I love my Heels!!). Not being able to have a car on campus is really old, as any grocery shopping on campus is extremely limited in selection and jacked up in price. Not that having a car will be much better since parking is also extremely limited and expensive. There is not a whole lot to do even on Franklin Street unless you can and want to pay an arm and a leg to shop or eat. You can start feeling a little cut off from reality when you can't leave campus for 9 months. Also, multiple people have agreed that it is a lot harder to make friends than you'd think, as in-staters tend to hang out with people from high school and not branch out. However, the school and clubs do their best to put on as many events as possible, so there is always something going on on campus (now whether they interest you or not is the question). All in all I have had fun here and know I'm getting a good degree, but it hasn't exactly turned out to be the learning experience I expected.
    Am learning a lot

    You do a lot of studying for the test, meaning you cram as much information as possible into your head for exams and to get homework done, but it's so much information in a short period of time that you don't remember much of it in the long run. I personally don't feel like I will graduate a well-rounded person with knowledge of many subjects, because the constant onslaught of new info makes it impossible to remember any past info. Plus you don't get a whole ton of real-world experience unless you're wanting to go into science or a research-heavy field (e.g. history). My biggest issue is that the there are so many gen ed credits you have to take. I know all colleges have them, but UNC's are ridiculous (2 Englishes, 2 Maths, 2 Sciences plus 1 Lab, up to level 4 in Foreign Language, 1 Lifetime Fitness 1 Experiential Education, 1 US Diversity, 3 Social Sciences, 1 Literary Arts, 1 Visual and Performing Arts, 1 Philosophical and Moral Reasoning, 1 Word Before 1790, 1 Beyond the North Atlantic, 1 Global Issues) so if you have no interest whatsoever in a class it makes it difficult to stay motivated. By the time you get to college, you know what your general strengths and weaknesses are, so (for example) having to take 2 sciences when you know you struggle with science is miserable. Moreover, some labs like chemistry or biology are about 4 hours long but you only receive one credit hour for it and have a separate exam for it - how does that make sense? This is especially frustrating in light of the fact that you're being forced to spend all that time in lab if you may not want to take it in the first place. However, if you want to learn skills like how to succeed in an interview or to build a resume, their career services is VERY helpful and work with you a lot. All these things considered, I am still only a freshman and so can't really know if you start learning more/learning more practical skills when you start taking upper-level courses. Also, the teachers tend to be very caring and want to help you as much as they can, even if it's a huge lecture class and their only exposure to you is through office hours. Many classes are taught by TAs though, and I've only heard of maybe 2 or 3 good TAs - most people hate theirs and say they are awful teachers.

    Whether your school offers 2 AP classes or 10, take advantage of them. That's what UNC likes to see in prospective students, that they try their hardest and use every opportunity to excel.

    UNC offers the best education for a great price, compared to colleges that share is caliber. I have many friends from out-of-state, and they say UNC was a great choice for them, both for education and costs.

    There is a place for EVERYONE at UNC. There are so many opportunities, whether you're into athletics, music, politics, the environment, or just having fun. With any activity, the school spirit behind it is incredible! I absolutely love UNC.
    Am learning a lot

    The professors are so helpful and willing to spend extra time with you after class if you still need help. Also, there is the learning center and many other tutoring options if you need lots of one-on-one time. The courses are challenging, but they can be conquered. You feel very accomplished after receiving good grades.

    Students that enjoy being on a large campus and having a huge student body will really like it here. The school is great for those that are looking for a liberal arts education, but still want the experience of attending a huge school.
    Tips for prospective students

    Do not be afraid to go ask for help. Whether it be the professor, a t.a., or even a upperclassmen. They'll more than likely be extremely enthusiastic to help you and guide you along. Also stay in close touch with you academic advisor, as they will help you a lot in choosing which classes to take,

    It's not named the best value school for nothing. Having the reputation of a public ivy it is cheap compared to, say Harvard or Yale, but the quality of the education is just as high. Plus you get access to one of the best basketball teams in the nation.

    There is no shortage of fun here, you will almost NEVER be bored here. Franklin street, sports, and just plain fun. From basketball games at the Dean Dome to flash raves in the Undergraduate Library, there is always activities to get yourself involved in.
    Am learning a lot

    While some of the classes are huge, you can still find lots of one on one time with professors and other ta's that are more than willing to help you out and help you succeed. The classes are also really condensed, and the professors will throw a lot of information at you in a short amount of time, so be prepared for a lot of homework and studying. Especially if you're a math or science major.

    TALK TO PEOPLE. Make as many friends as you can. Friends lead to more friends. The more friends you have, the better time you will have in college.

    I am an in-state student so the tuition for me is very low. If I were an out of state student, the rating would probably be a one star. Nevertheless, in-state students cannot beat the affordability plus prestige of the degree.
    Am enjoying being here

    The social and academic life is great. There is a perfect balance IF you know how to manage it. The Greek scene is very strong at UNC (only if you want it to be as it is entirely possible to completely avoid the Greek scene). Carolina is a huge place, and it is possible to get lost in the masses if you refuse to be outgoing and find a group of friends. It isn't difficult, but it does take some effort. Manage your time well (don't go out every night) and you will love it too. Quick side note: UNC athletics are a blast. Go to them.
    Am learning a lot

    The courses are challenging. The professors are challenging. The work can be overwhelming. You will learn more at North Carolina than you ever have before, and you will love it. The professors are knowledgeable and really want to see you excel. If you are willing to learn they will ensure that it happens. Even introductory courses are very interesting. Take courses that you think may interest you, even if they don't gel with your major. Majors will change. An interesting class may change your life.

    Tips for prospective students

    Let's see, for incoming freshman, I would suggest that you get involved. There is so much offered at UNC but you won't get anything out of it if you don't go out and try new things and meet new people. Try not to go home too often in the beginning because that just makes getting into college life harder. Most importantly, try and find a balance between fun and studying. By all means go out and have fun, just make sure you leave some time for academics and preferably not all crammed in at the same time.

    Like any college, it costs quite a bit to go to UNC but it's definitely money well spent. You will get every penny's worth and if you feel like something you are paying for is lacking in any way, they are good about listening to you and trying to solve the problem.

    I love it here! It was quite an adjustment, and it still is in some areas, but I couldn't ask for more from a college. There are so many different resources if you need help with anything and there's such an energetic, welcoming student body that it's hard not to get swept up in the Carolina fever. There's always something to do, you just need to look.

    You will definitely learn a whole lot at Chapel Hill, be it in class or out. There's so much information to learn that it can sometimes seem a tad overwhelming, but if you make the effort and talk to your professors it's nothing you won't be able to handle.

    Balanced students. If you thoroughly enjoy learning, would like to get painted and crazy for a basketball game, think music is a way of life, love to eat, appreciate beautiful architecture, believe that bar hopping would be fun in the future, and can be creative enough to design the best costume for Halloween, than UNC-Chapel Hill is the place for you.
    Tips for prospective students

    UNC has some of the worlds best programs in areas such as business, journalism, information sciences, history, public health, and nursing--just to name a few. Most of these programs are demanding but manageable; however, If you are interested in biology or chemistry, you need to realize just how rigorous the coursework will be. Understand that your college experience is what you make of it, and if you can't live without a full nights rest, and don't absolutely love biology or chemistry, you may have to consider either choosing another major or attending an easier school.

    Kiplinger recently rated the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the #1 best value university in the nation. Tuition is low for in-state students, and much more affordable for out-of-state students than comparable institutions.

    Where better than UNC to get the full college experience. With top notch academics, incredible athletic teams often ranked among the top in the nation, and a town attached to the university that caters to a students every need, Carolina is the place to be for any student who wishes to have it all in college. In my opinion, there are very few places that can compare to what UNC and Chapel Hill can offer students.

    UNC has one of the nations most renowned faculty, but your education here will extend far beyond that. Students are, for the most part, extremely intelligent, friendly, and ambitious. Much of your learning experience in classrooms at any college will consist of your peers pushing you to think more critically and acquire greater knowledge. Students at Carolina are searching for answers, and not trying to just outshine you, and the result is a great learning environment. As far as public universities are concerned, you won't find another with better academics.

    If you worked your butt off in high school, this is the place for you. If you are passionate about school pride, this is the place for you. If you want to be a pharmacist, this is the place for you. The bio,chemistry, and nursing programs are also amazing at UNC.

    UNC is a lot of fun but expect to work hard. All the hard work is worth it in the end. However, if you're looking for a free ride for four years look for another college.

    UNC is worth all the money. It isn't as expensive as other schools that have this great of a reputation. It was affordable for me and my father makes around 40 grand.

    I love UNC's campus. The campus is beautiful and their buildings are great. There are more libraries than you know what to do with. We have two gyms and they have several machines and weights. The dorms for freshmen are social dorms. The dining halls have anything you could ever want to eat. There are events held on every holiday and movies are shown every Friday. Franklin Street is awesome! Everything you could ever want is on Franklin: food, movies, and shopping. Oh and of course the SPORTS! We have wonderful teams. GO TARHEELS!
    Am learning a lot

    Overall, the teachers at UNC are wonderful. They provide outside help when needed and they will make sure you are able to meet with them. These teachers make subjects apply to life. Academics are tough at UNC but if you get accepted you are able to do well. I have learned more in my freshman year at UNC then I have throughout my four years in high school.

    If you’re intelligent, driven, politically informed, and at least somewhat of a humanitarian, you’ll fit right in. The student body is pretty liberal, so be prepared to get some backlash if you’re conservative. However, as a whole, the students are very diverse and accepting.
    Tips for prospective students

    Take as many AP or IB classes as you can, stick with a few extracurriculars throughout high school to show dedication, and try to be a leader in some capacity (e.g. student government, president of a club, yearbook editor, etc). Believe it or not, grades aren’t everything, even to get into UNC. If you’re accepted, -Take a freshman seminar class! The class size is small and everyone is new to the school, so it's a great place to find friends. -Consider a Living & Learning Community, especially if you want to be a part of a close-knit group. I was in the RELIC LLC and it was like having a family at school. -Set a good study routine from the start; my first semester, I got distracted doing so many different activities that I had a hard time catching up. -Study the Undergrad Bulletin! It explains gen. ed. requirements well, but there are a lot of them, so make sure you know what you need. There are so many classes offered that it's easy to get lost and make poor choices for your major. An hour or two of research on requirements can pay off big time, since some classes can meet 2 or 3 requirements.

    You would have to stay in your dorm all day to be bored here; there's no way to avoid the tons of activities going on all the time! It's easy to find a group, club, or activity that fits your interests. (I recommend playing Humans vs. Zombies!) The campus is absolutely gorgeous. I loved living in the Upper Quad on the older part of campus, and being so close to the Arboretum and Franklin Street was a definite plus. Though I adored my time at UNC, I didn't finish my undergrad degree there because I personally need a smaller, more connected academic environment to do my best. Though UNC is fantastic, it's not for everyone.
    Did learn a lot

    As everyone has said, UNC has top-notch academics and you are guaranteed to learn a lot, even on subjects you thought you knew well... IF you go to class, that is. A lot of classes are big enough that it's easy to unnoticed. That being said, none of my classes were above 70 people, even as a freshman.

    there is not one specific type of student that is perfect for chapel hill. unc is one of the most diverse campuses that i have ever heard of and there are infinite opportunities for students to get plugged in, find their niche, and contribute to furthering their specific passions or interests.

    unc is full of tradition, some of which are evident by the physical campus itself. with the old well, belltower, dean smith center, kenan stadium, and many more, carolina's traditions are an essential part of what being a tarheel is all about. while visiting, be sure to pick up a copy of the daily tarheel on a friday and check out the weekly kvetching board, a component of our campus' newsletter that is unique to unc!

    the dining halls at unc are great but there are a few other dining options on campus that are convenient too.

    i lived in a dorm through my junior year and loved it! it's a great way to meet new people and being close the hustle and bustle of campus is reason enough to live in a dorm as long as possible.

    while the courses at unc are typically challenging, it definitely depends on the course and degree you are pursuing. i have learned more than i could imagine and have had very few classes here that i did not absolutely love.

    when you arrive at carolina, do not be afraid to jump right in! with so many opportunities, clubs, student organizations, sports, and classes to choose from, it's so easy to get plugged into the campus and the community that is chapel hill.

    there are police all over campus and there is a campus safety program that keeps students notified via email and/or text message of any threats on or near campus.

    there is a very strong greek community on campus and if any student wants to get involved there are many wonderful options. rush week is really big on campus and can be a lot of fun.

    if you like something there is a club for it and on the off chance that there isn't, you can make one! there are always activities and celebrations going on around campus and within each dorm community there are special events to get you acquainted and involved with other students. there is also always a lot of free food!

    carolina has such a diverse student body so there is a place for every type of student on campus. if you get excepted, you can find a place here to call your temporary home. :)

    ah, the carolina bucket list...okay, so if you are fortunate enough to go to school here, you have to take the p2p bus and go hang out on franklin street at least a dozen times -and you must experience the wonder of biskis after a night of partying (after finals are over of course). other things: drink from the old well, and hang out in the pit. the pit is the spot for most of the crazy-fun things that go on and the place we always refer to when telling people where we are at in location to something. also, sit on the steps of the wilson library and do your homework and/or lay in the quad at least once on a pretty day-our campus is so beautiful. there are so many more, but that should get anyone on a great start :)

    i am pretty sure we rank top 5 in the country for what you get here for your money. everything really is included in the tuition, down to money you need to print things. every professor you have has done and is doing amazing things. one of my professors this semester just got back from building schools in another country and one from last semester is the director of the research facility in the galapagos islands! you really do learn from the best here at carolina.
    What to do for fun

    there are always fun events on campus and of course our teams always provide great entertainment (especially when the beat duke. there is a huge mall really close by with some great restaurants but when in doubt anyone can wander to franklin street and have a great time.
    Food and Dining

    campus could use another dining hall but we do have two already and they make everything you can imagine. there are even vegetarian mondays! aside from the dining hall there are tons of places that deliver to campus through tarheel takeout but it is relatively expensive to use that service. if you are tired of the dining hall and can't go off campus there is a subway, a chick fil-a, a chinese place, a few markets throughout campus and a place that makes pizza and burgers. there are definitely a lot of options!
    Dorm Life

    all dorms are what you would expect but it is the people that makes living on campus great. living on campus allows you to meet great people and get involved in your community. we also get pretty cool t-shirts!
    Academic Rigor

    carolina is difficult to get into for a reason. don't come here if you don't expect to work for your degree and learn a lot along the way. there are so many amazing classes you get to take here!
    Tips for prospective students

    be ready to be challenged and experience a campus life like no other! we have a strong, intelligent, determined student body and everyone is involved in something great. we have many clubs so come to campus prepared to join in, meet some great people and have the time of your life here at carolina. when you get to campus go to everything you can during the week of welcome and no matter what you do go to fall fest!!! however, don't forget to come prepared to learn though- classes are tough but well worth every dollar spent.

    I've never felt like I was in a dangerous situation once on campus. And if you're the paranoid type, there are these large pillars with a pretty blue light located every few blocks on campus where, if you press the button, an official person comes as soon as possible.
    Greek Life

    I've never been too interested in Greek Life, but there are many houses that you could choose from if that's your area of interest.
    Clubs and Activities

    Attending Fall Fest is a must! It's right at the beginning of the year and basically all official clubs at UNC have a little stand with lots of information about their club. There are lots of free things, but be prepared to give a little shove because thousands of other students want that free object too! There are so many clubs with different interests that it'd be hard not to find what you're looking for, but even if that's the case, you can get a group together and easily start your own.
    Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    One should definitely take walks in the arboretum every few weeks or so; it's very relaxing! Also, if you ever get the chance, contact someone in the Astrophysics department at UNC and see if you can get a group to look through the telescope at Morehead Observatory. Just watching and hearing the observatory spin open is awesome!
    What to do for fun

    I would recommend getting out and exploring the areas around Chapel Hill. I personally think that Chapel Hill is too small of a city, but there's also Carrboro nearby, which is an artsy, interesting town. You could also take a $2 bus to South Point mall, which has quite a bit to do. Finally, if you have a car, I'd take a trip to Raleigh or Durham a couple of times during the semester; basically, don't keep your boundaries frozen on campus/Chapel Hill city lines!
    Food and Dining

    The dining hall is convenient, to say the least. The food seems pretty good at first (side note: I'm not a very picky person), but it gets to be a little bit monotonous after a while. It's not gourmet, but it's also not horrible either. I could always rely on the salad bar and a slice of pizza, and I was fine with that. So, if you're a very picky eater, you probably won't be very happy with it. However, if you aren't, you can be content with the dining hall food.
    Dorm Life

    My dorm experience was great, but I was able to reside in one of the most ideally located dorms on UNC's campus. Although my room was small, all of my friend's rooms in other dorms on UNC's campus were a bit bigger. There were always fliers up for different activities at the dorm (movies, free pizza parties, TV shows), which even if you don't go to, it's nice to know that the students in charge are being proactive about your dormitory experience!
    Academic Rigor

    Academics are much different than in high school! I didn't really understand how to effectively study until second semester of my first year, and this knowledge bumped up my GPA by 0.25 points. If your experience is similar to mine, studying in high school wasn't too necessary all the time. But, if you want the same grades at UNC as you had in high school, be prepared to put in a lot more time.
    Tips for prospective students

    You must see the Pit Preacher. He is a riot; argue if you dare. You also need to get involved with clubs, if only so you can paint important events on the Pit cube--it's very competitive! Finally, don't try to do everything; find two or three clubs that you love and put a lot of time and effort into them. It's not high school--you should be in a club because you agree with their ideals, not because it's yet another club you can add to an application.

    The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's campus, to me, is a great metaphor for the university as a whole; first off, it's full of color and zest, with all the beautiful trees everywhere. In addition, many of its buildings have very strange architecture, which relates to UNC's uniqueness as a whole. But finally, all the students you pass are enthusiastic, happy and content, which exemplifies all of the university's attributes.

    There is a dedicated police force on campus as well as security poles everywhere. At night, there is a student-run service that will walk you back to your dorm (from the library or other buildings) or you can call the local public transport and they will pick you up. I am a small woman and I have never felt threatened on campus.
    What to do for fun

    The Chapel Hill area is buzzing with 20-somethings looking for both fun and a way to make a difference. If you want to volunteer or would rather go play paintball or just chill on campus, there is a lot to do.
    Food and Dining

    The selection of food in the dining halls is marvelous. Some students tire of eating in the dining halls, but then there are plenty of other choices both in and around campus. Personally, I was generally happy with my meal choices.
    Dorm Life

    The dorms are comfortable and I was never uncomfortable there. I don't see myself moving off-campus in the upcoming years.
    Academic Rigor

    The courses at Carolina require a lot more work than I was accustomed to from high school. And while they are difficult, there are plenty of places you can get help if you need it (tutors, TAs, office hours).

    Carolina is a great fit for any type of student. I have met students from other coutnries who love it here, and out of state students who don't want to leave. As an instate student I adore it. There are so many different organizations and groups, it is nearly impossible to not find multiple things that interest you. The hardest thing is choosing what activity or group you want to try next.

    Be sure to deomonstrate in your essays that you are a well-rounded person who is mature and ready to be a student in college. Show that you are ready to be a contributing member of a college community and ready to get involved in the many things that interest you.

    I personally was looking at many out of state schools but decided on Carolina for many reasons, inclulding its afforadbility. I am extremely happy I chose UNC. UNC has professors top in their field, fellow students who were at the top of the class, all striving to reach another level of learning for one of the most do-able prices you can find when looking at a prestigious University.

    I thoroughly enjoy my time here at UNC. People in general are very welcoming and open. I have a very active dorm and dorm community; it is great to come back to your dorm after a day of classes and enjoy a taco night with the people on your floor. I have enjoyed the overwhelming sense of community in the University as a whole and though it may not be the most important aspect of choosing a college, I love walking through such an aesthetically pleasing campus.
    Am learning a lot

    I am currently a freshman here and have already noticed how my education is definitely on the next level. I learn relevant interesting things in all my classes, despite having some that I am taking to merely complete general education requirements. I easily find practical applications for what I learn in the classroom and enjoy being able to apply them in the real world as that is something I have always considered important. The wealth of knowledge of the professors seem bottomless and they are beyond ready to share it with eager students.

    With it being considered an equivalent to a public Ivy-League school, it is an extremely good education for very low tuition for in-state students. It is definitely worth the investment.

    After being in Chapel Hill many a time, the environment is exceptional. Ideal for learning and being social. It is a beautiful campus and there is a TON of stuff to do.
    Will learn a lot

    The classes are difficult, but totally worth taking. Friends of mine have expressed that the time commitment to school work may be higher than some other colleges, but for a good education, it is worth the effort and you will leave having learned much more than most.

    Make sure your essays are well-written and thought out, as they hold most of the weight of your application. Be well-rounded! I know everyone says that, but it's the truth. Volunteer A LOT, experiment with leadership roles, play some sports, or join a band. There are endless ways to ensure well-roundedness for success on your college application.

    Absolutely worth it. Out of state tuition is kind of pricey though.

    Chapel Hill is Heaven on Earth. 'Nuff said. Seriously though, it is fantastic. The campus is gorgeous, the people are wonderful, and the environment is all-around dream-like. I couldn't ask for a better college and I am so glad I chose this college over every other one. It was the best decision I ever made. There are always things going on around campus. In fact, this entire weekend is Potter Palooza in celebration of the last Harry Potter movie coming out on DVD so there is a huge party in the Student Union every night, starting Thursday. There is something here for everyone and thousands of different ways to get involved. The best part is this: if you CAN'T find something that interests you (which seems almost impossible) then you can create your own club, group, organization, or whatever you want!
    Am learning a lot

    The classes are very challenging, but I am learning more than I ever though I would and I am loving it! The professors are fantastic. They're all eager to help kids who are trying to help themselves. Although the class sizes are larger for things like chemistry, biology, business, etcetera, I feel that it is better because you grow to learn from the people around you and not just your professor. It is an excellent place to come if you want a challenging and rewarding education.

    Don't slack off when you get here. While the professors may help, it is a lot different from high school. Just because some classes do not take attendance, doesn't mean you should skip that class.

    This school is definitely worth the money that you would spend to attend this school. The tuition is not that high. It is a lot less than the other schools I received acceptance to.

    I love it here. Everyone is nice. Complete strangers that you pass say hi to you as you pass and if you need help trying to locate a certain building, ask anyone and they will tell you.

    It is wonderful here. I am learning many new things that I didn't know before. I am also exploring different classes from what I originally planned and I am enjoying it. I may even end up changing my major from what I really expected.

    Great for people who love to learn and have a passion for something. Carolina wants you to pursue the things you are passionate about and will help you in any way it can. It is also great for people who like a social environment, since the social scene is so diverse and alive you will be sure to find somewhere you love to be! Perfect for students who want to have pride and spirit for their school! It's an amazing experience walking to Kenan Stadium and seeing students painted blue and showing the Carolina spirit early on a Saturday morning!
    Tips for prospective students

    While a good GPA and SAT scores are important, Carolina doesn't just look at how you do in the classroom. They look at who you are as a person and what you do in life outside of school. Be yourself as much as possible on your application! They are looking for bright minds and well rounded personalities that will go far in the Carolina community. Get involved in community service and try out some leadership activities and other extracurricular's that you enjoy. One of the most important sections of the application, however, is the essays. Make sure they express who you are as a person and are well written. Revise them several times before submitting them and let someone else revise them for you as well.
    Bang for the buck

    UNC has a private school education at a public school cost, but you get so much more than an ivy league-worthy education for your money. Tuition covers student tickets to athletic events, use of the 2 on-campus gyms, the many soccer fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts, and access to the 2 pools. Campus shuttles and the local bus system are also free to students for getting around campus.
    Am enjoying being here

    While the suburban setting is not for everyone, Carolina's gorgeous campus offers a quite college environment free of outside distractions. Keep in mind though, the famous Franklin Street is less than a mile walk or bus shuttle from any point on campus. The bus system caters to the needs of students by having routes to local shopping malls, grocery stores, movie theaters, and other destinations in the surrounding cities of Raleigh and Durham since first years are not allowed cars on campus. Living in a community as diverse as Carolina, there is always something for you to get involved in like Athletic clubs or charity events on campus. Its hard not to get involved in leaving your Heel Print in some way in your years at Carolina!
    Am learning a lot

    UNC is prestigious for its academic environment. While many lecture classes may easily contain 300+ students, there are plenty of one-on-one opportunities with professors and teaching assistants outside of class. There are also a wide selection of smaller sized classes if the lecture hall setting is not for you. UNC has many options for students who need a little extra help in the writing center and tutoring centers on campus. Most teachers also hold study sessions before exams where you can go to ask questions and get extra help. The professors here at Carolina are eager and willing to help students who seek assistance.

    the number one crime on campus is larceny, so never leave your laptop and belongings unattended. try not to walk alone or in isolated areas when it is dark outside too. walk in well-lit areas where others are nearby. there is a public safety building on south campus right by the dorm buildings. campus police is always circulating campus. there is also the p2p, a bus that runs between 7pm and 7am. there is a program called safe-walk that allows students studying late at the library to be walked to their room by two trained people. always lock your dorm room as well when you're outside. campus is generally safe, but take precautions just as your would anywhere and in any city.
    Greek Life

    there are many different fraternities and sororities on campus for those interested. just see frat court--a road near campus with a bunch of greek houses next to each other.
    Clubs and Activities

    there are over 600 campus organizations, undergraduate research, and many nearby internship opportunities. there is also a medical school, public health school, and pharmacy school for those pre-med students. for those interested in community service, check out pss and apples!

    hardworking students that are looking to get a great education but also get involved in activities on campus and cheer for their school sports teams!

    whenever unc wins a basketball game, students living in craige dorm and hojo dorm, go on the balcony. people in one dorm yell tar! and the people in the other dorm yell heels!. there is also a game on campus called humans vs. zombies that happens twice a year. students wear a bandana on either their arm or around their head to designate which team they represent and also carry nerf-guns.

    it is a great school overall, with a lot of high ranking programs, such as business, chemistry, public health, medicine, journalism, and more! there are so many great opportunities on campus as well. class registration, however, can be a little tough and stressful. they really want students to graduate in four years, so graduation rate is really high (80+). dorms and food can be pricey but the cost of this can definitely be reduced by living off campus, choosing certain dorm styles, and eating out less/cooking in your dorm. smart textbook shopping can also reduce the cost of books. buy or rent used books and sell back old ones. compared to other high ranking public universities, tuition is also lower. it has been voted the number one best value university in the united states for the past 11 years. that says something!!!
    What to do for fun

    you can catch a bus to southpointe mall. there is also franklin street, which has an old movie theater, tons of restaurants, museums, and more. there are always events happening on-campus. there are some cool speakers that have come, movie-screenings, and definitely sports games! football, tailgating, and basketball are awesome. there is also intramural sports.
    Food and Dining

    there are two on campus dining halls-lenoir and rams head. lenoir is on north campus and is across from student stores and the student union. it is also near the undergraduate library. the lower level has several food-stops and fast-food, such as sub-way, chick-fil-a, jamba juice, and more local favorites like med deli. the upper level in the dining hall, which is all you can eat buffet style. you can get a meal plan or pay cash/credit. rams head is on south campus. on the first floor is starbucks and the dining hall. it is also buffet style. the basement level has a mini-mart and sub-way restaurant. there are sometimes events and special theme days in the dining halls which can be fun. it is always best to go at opening time to beat the crowds and get the freshest food!
    Dorm Life

    there are over 32 residence halls on campus. north campus dorms are beautiful! they are also within a 5 minute walk to most academic buildings and the undergraduate library, dining hall, and student union. they are hall style, meaning all the rooms on one hall share a community bathroom. south campus dorms are where most first-year students live. they are suite-style, meaning there 2 to 4 rooms that share one bathroom. they these are called high rise dorms, meaning they are 5+ stories high. each floor of any dorm building has 1 to 2 resident advisors. hese are fellow students who help you with any resident life related issues. south campus dorms are close to another dining hall that has a mini mart and sub-way restaurant on the lower level, as well as a two story gym and starbucks nearby. it is also close to unc hospital, basketball stadium, and the business school. there are several bus lines here, so you can take a bus or walk about 15 minutes to get to class.
    Academic Rigor

    academics are tough at carolina! you're in the company of students who were also at the top of their class in high school. a lot of people are hard workers. however, it is definitely possible to thrive and do well. there are so many great learning resources on campus, such as free peer tutoring, one-on-one tutoring at resource centers, the learning center, study groups, and office hours appointments with your professors and their teaching assistants. keep up with reading and assignments. procrastination is your enemy in college!
    Tips for prospective students

    focus solely on academics your first semester because it is an adjustment. even if you came from a rigorous high school curriculum (ib diploma, competitive academy, etc.), it is an adjustment. keep a list going of activities you're interested in joining your second semester. never fall behind in reading and homework!!! it is just too much material to cram in before exams. once you're adjusted to academics, find activities that interest you. there are over 600 campus organizations, undergraduate research, and intramural sports. plus, chapel hill is located in a great area of the state--the research triangle! if you're ever looking for some interesting, paid, and challenging internships, just look in the area--or even on campus! there are a lot of opportunities in science, health, technology, engineering, business, and more! if you can't find something that fits you, create your own organization!

    campus in general is very safe; they have a program where people can walk you back to your dorm late at night if you don't feel safe. there is also a bus that can transport people to and from various locations on campus, and this runs until about 3 a.m. there have been incidences of crime, but it is rare to hear much about it. as long as you are cautious especially late at night, you will be okay.
    What to do for fun

    go out and have fun! there are a lot of amazing events on campus happening pretty much every single night, so it's hard to get bored on campus. there are even dorm-wide events, so you don't even have to travel that far to go meet new people. you can also take a bus to go to the nearby mall, or take a walk in general. there's so many ways that you can enjoy yourself on a beautiful campus like this, and if you feel like you're about to run out of things to do, just go to a concert nearby at the cat's cradle in the nearby town of carrboro.

    the dining hall food is okay. some days are good, some days are horrible, but usually it is average. there is a first floor on one of the dining halls where you can get various types of food such as sandwiches, fast food, sushi, chinese food, indian food, salads, etc. easily. there are also various locations around campus to grab a cup of coffee or a quick bite to eat. there are also great restaurants right on franklin street, which is a little off of the northernmost section of campus. there are lots of places and types of cuisine to choose from, so it's easy to find something that satisfies your cravings.
    Dorm Life

    being able to socialize with other people from around the area is eye-opening. you are able to talk about different issues and topics to people with various perspectives, making it easier for you to understand how others think and rationalize. there are a lot of people constantly around, so it's easy to socialize especially in your first year. if you move up to north campus, you should make sure to reach out to people on your own because it is less social on the northern part of campus in comparison to south. either way, you always will be able to find a way to enjoy your dorm life.
    Academic Rigor

    as a science major, i constantly have something to do. i always have an assignment due every week in every class, but i don't really mind as much. the tests have a lot of material on them, as expected in every college class, so it is hard to keep everything under control. the course load should be expected before you take the class. as long as you study and make sure you don't fall behind, it is rewarding to realize how much you've learned in the semester.
    Tips for prospective students

    as a possible future student of unc-chapel hill, be expecting the work that you'll have to do. you should also join as many clubs as you can during the fall fest event they have every year at the beginning of the school year in order to figure out your true niche and work from there to build up your own unique college experience. make sure you reach out to everyone you can especially in the first few months, and you can figure out what kinds of things will work for your schedule. if you are great at waking up in the morning, then go ahead and take early morning classes. if not, then make sure you don't take them because missing classes can affect your grades tremendously, especially if you don't study for it on your own.

    unc has a lively campus, is full of wonderful people, and is an inspiring place for all. i love attending this school for all the experiences it has given me, for all of the friends i've met and gotten close to, and all the memories that have been created and are also yet to come. even if it is situated in a suburban area, it's easy to find an event to go to or hang out with people every single day, and you can still get a world-class education while enjoying life.

    UNC-CH is centered in the heart of Chapel Hill, NC. This area provides lots of cultured activities. We are surrounded by Raleigh & Durham which both offer additional fun outings. Of course, there is always excitement in town during football & basketball season!

    On campus dining offers a lot of variety. Also, within walking distance are numerous restaurants.

    As a graduate student, I live off campus. But I heard from peers and other students that on campus housing is comfortable, affordable and convenient access to bus system.

    I feel safe walking at night. Also, there are bus lines running at basically all hours of the night, so you can hitch a ride on one of those if you have a long walk to make and you don't want to go it alone.

    I have no idea. I know that, supposedly, we have a very prominent Greek Life society, but. I'm not a part of it, so I couldn't really give any details.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are all kinds of clubs you can join, as well as school-sponsored activities to attend. I know that at least once, they offered massages and a free session of acupuncture. I missed it, but. That sounds pretty awesome. There are lots of sports, and academic, and just-for-funzies clubs you can join as well, like the Ultimate Frisbee, Debate, and Anime clubs.
    Great for these types of students

    It's great if you're an academically gifted student, or if you're a student who likes to work hard and be rewarded for his efforts. Such things are respected here. I, personally, am not a sports fan of any kind, but, the Tar Heels are pretty big into their sports. If you're a sports lover, this is probably a school to consider.

    Well. I'm still learning about all of these traditions, but, supposedly, if you drink from the Old Well on the first day of classes, you'll do very well that year. There's also an old tree called Davy Poplar. I guess, if it falls, then some curse will be unleashed upon us all or something. I dunno. I just hope it doesn't fall. I don't want to be cursed.

    It's a world-renowned university at the price of a public education. if I'm not mistaken, it's been ranked as the Best Value University in some magazine or other. It's a pretty good deal...
    What to do for fun

    There is an abundance of groups you can join if you're looking for something to do. Personally, I joined the Carolina Ukulele Ensemble, and I'm having a blast. But there are also lots of other things, such as all types of theatre, a capella groups, martial arts clubs, sports clubs, ultimate frisbee, fraternities, sororities, activist clubs, an anime club, and so much more.
    Food and Dining

    People say that you get tired of the food. I suppose that will probably be true, but it's not yet happened to me. There are two great dining halls with pretty good hours, one of them staying open until midnight on weekdays. There are also lots of other places you can go to grab a bite to eat if you don't have a meal plan, or you're just not feeling the dining hall that day. My favorite is the 24/7 Wendy's.
    Dorm Life

    I am very satisfied with my dorm life. I got a great roommate, and my hall-mates all seem friendly and warm. And, most fortunate of all, the RA is not too strict about things. We live our lives respectably, and in return, we're given the freedom to do so without interruption.
    Academic Rigor

    All through High School, I was one of the kids who coasted by without having to study and still somehow being the one people looked up to as the smart kid. Well. Things changed when I got here, because, as it turns out, there are a heck of a lot of those kids here. But it's satisfying. You really have an opportunity to have intellectually stimulating conversations that might have been a bit too geeky for your old school. They're not afraid of smart people here; they embrace them.

    Chapel Hill has a pretty big name, and some people are intimidated to apply to such a school. I say go for it. If you get in, it really has a lot to offer. It's a great education and a great atmosphere at a public, affordable rate.

    The people are all very nice and supportive of creativity. You'll be challenged intellectually, and you'll really get a new perspective on how you view yourself, intellectually. There is an incredible amount of various groups that you can join, so you can rest assured that you'll find something you'll live to do (I, personally, joined the Ukulele Ensemble).

    Dorm life is alright; rooms are normally quite small, but the the RAs and people are amazing.

    This can vary, depending on the course load. As a chemistry major with the maximum hours this semester, I have a fairly rigorous schedule, with chemistry at the top of my difficulty level. The courses can vary from easy to challenging, but each class and its professor is what you make of it - should you choose to go the extra mile, nothing can stop you.

    Apply early, so that you can be eligible for scholarships. Try to get involved in clubs of your interest early, but don't overwhelm yourself.

    I recommend clubs, but there is much more. Franklin street has many good restaurants and shops. There is a cinema on Franklin that my friends and I go to on occasion. The sporting events are frequent and entertaining.

    I really like my suite-mates, and my fellow dorm-mates. At any institution it really is up to chance whether or not you like the people living with you. My dorm is well maintained, but it is rather old so there are some problems, but nothing major. Community government organizes events, however, there are not many and not too many people attend.

    The courses are difficult, especially those in the sciences. This is a good thing however, because it trains you to be more successful in the future. The GPA can be unbalanced for science majors because of this, so that is something to consider.

    College is what you make of it. There are plenty of clubs and other opportunities, but it is entirely up to you to take advantage of these resources. Don't expect to achieve greatness if you don't actively pursue it.

    The academics at UNC are very good especially for pre-med students, with the exception of some math courses, specifically Calculus 2. The teachers know what they are talking about, and the large majority of the T.A's are very well informed and very helpful too. The students here are nice creating a pleasant atmosphere. Overall, this is a pretty good university.

    If you are a hard worker, and you want to go to a school that has high standards then this is the school for you. If you want to be challenged academically, this is definitely the school for you.
    Tips for prospective students

    Well, let's see, what advice would I give? I think the most important thing is to make sure you take advantage of all of the resources offered to you. If you don't understand something, get help from the tutoring centers. Also, if you have a question, talk to your professor. Don't be afraid to talk to them. They want you to be concerned about your education. Make sure you get involved. Studying is the most important thing, but if you don't get involved in some sort of club so you have an outlet for your stress you won't be able to focus as well on your studies. Also, clubs are a great way to build new relationships. Lastly, be prepared for the difficulty of the classes. This is not going to be easy. You're going to have to study a lot and probably sacrifice some of your social life in order to do well. Just remember, you're not in high school anymore.

    This is definitely a great school for the money that you pay. They have so many programs to help you succeed such as the tutoring center or chemistry and math help centers. The programs they offer for study abroad are also amazing. All of the advisors in both the study abroad office and academic advising office are extremely knowledgeable so they can help you with any questions you have. The professors are also really good and know what they are talking about.
    Am enjoying being here

    I really like it here. The people are all really nice. There are so many activities that there's never really a time when you will feel bored. All you have to do is walk down Franklin Street or around campus and you will most likely find something to do.

    Ok, so the classes are pretty tough, but you learn a lot. The teachers are very informative and most of them are willing to talk to you and help in any way they can. Just remember that college and high school are on a whole different level so UNC Chapel Hill is going to be a lot harder than any high school you may have attended.

    UNC has a very diverse community and is very accepting. The work is challenging, but the faculty is accommodating and wants to be involved in your academic career. UNC is great for any student who is curious about the world that we live in.

    1. Sit in The Pit during a visit to the school. You will most likely see a majority of the student body and get a great feel for the college. 2. Talk to current students - either through Facebook, tour guides, or friends. 3. Do not be discouraged if you are an out-of-state student. Apply anyway!

    Everyone I have met at UNC is incredibly outgoing, friendly and driven. Students here were the presidents and founders of school clubs, and volunteered immensely while in high school. It is a generally philanthropic student body with a fevent passio for the greater good.

    Though not cheap for a public school, UNC offers an education comparable to that of prestigious private schools in the area for a much lower price.

    The town of Chapel Hill is so quaint and truly has a Southern charm to it that I love.

    I was at first nervous about the size of the campus and the student body, but it's not at all uncomfortable or too overwhelming. True, I did get lost a few times but you get the feel of the campus quickly.

    This school is comparatively cheap, but still pretty financially daunting. Just... get scholarships. Lots of them.
    Am enjoying being here

    The people here are super nice and super fun. There's always things to do and plenty of things to sign up for. There are several a cappella groups and dance teams who take on inexperienced people who just want to have fun. Not to mention cultural groups and religious groups. Most people already know each other, so if you're out of state or come from a small place and don't know anyone, the social events and groups help you meet tons of people and you make friends fast (as long as you can get out of your comfort zone, that is).
    Am learning a lot

    Definitely do not underestimate the difficulty of the academics. The professors stuff you with an overflow of information, even with subjects you would think are mostly common sense or subjective knowledge. It's challenging, but not impossibly difficult.

    don't slack off, period. you might have slid by in high school, but things are different in college. chapel hill is hard, but it's fun. don't forget to enjoy your time here. it goes by quickly. get immersed in unc culture. it is truly amazing here. the sports, the people, the campus, the traditions, and the history are all things that make chapel hill a one-of-a-kind place.

    unc offers over 600 student clubs/associations that you can join. for most organizations, it is easy to join by simply signing up for their listserv, but we also have organizations such as student government and acapella groups which require auditions, elections, etc. however, there is a wide variety of clubs for all different kinds of interests.

    i wouldn't call our traditions unusual, but we have a few special rituals here at unc. there's the old well which is pretty much the 'icon' of unc; there's a myth that if you drink from the old well on your first day of class, you will receive a 4.0 gpa for the semester. also, after our basketball team beats duke, everyone rushes to franklin street and there's a huge celebration party with bonfires, etc.

    as a in-state student, the cost of unc is definitely worth it. it's a great academic environment and i've learned so much in the little time i've been here. unc offers so many opportunities--socially and academically. you definitely get what you are paying for here.
    What to do for fun

    there is plenty at chapel hill to do for fun. you can simply join organizations, attend unc events, etc. however, unc also has a great nightlife. every weekend, franklin street is full of people wanting to go out to eat, or dance. you will most likely always find something to do at unc.

    personally, i am not a big fan of the dining halls at unc. although they are pretty much buffet-style, you will see a lot of the same options being served over and over again and your taste for the food quickly diminishes. however, there are plenty of other options such as alpine bagel, chick-fil-a, subway, etc. if you get sick of dining hall food. plus, if you ever have the time, franklin street is always there.

    dorms at unc are not lavish, but they are not awful either. although the rooms are small, it is easy to decorate and make them more comfortable. as a freshman, dorms are a great social tool; you will be able to easily meet people.

    unc is highly rigorous. it is a huge transition from high school; unc requires a lot more focus and dedication. if you are looking to attend unc, it's a good idea to sharpen up your study skills.

    even walking alone at night as a female, i feel safe on the unc campus. between the campus safety officers, and programs like safe walk that walk students back to their dorms at night, i have never felt unsafe.

    when i first came to carolina i was so surprised to find so many dining options! if you have time to sit down and eat your fill, there are two all-you-can-eat dining halls. if you're pressed for time between classes there are several other quick options that are still tasty and inexpensive! dining services offers several different programs to fit everyone's needs.

    dorm life really gives you a chance to meet fellow tarheels and get to know the campus. so many students live on campus that the residence life organization is really strong and well developed.

    i would definitely suggest visiting campus before making your final decision: i knew for sure that i would love carolina once i stepped foot on the quad. also, i would encourage you to do some research about all the clubs that are offered at unc, finding your niche makes such a big school seem almost small and familiar!

    Usually very safe, but we have been having some problems with the Campus Alert system. They didn't alert us when there was a rape, but alerted us three times for a possible tornado; we can clearly see the tornado, but a rapist is something we should be on the lookout for. However, the school newspaper has been attacking them for it, and they are currently trying to better tweak the system.
    Greek Life

    Less familiar with the Greek Life; I know that it is popular, and people will often go to a frat party on the weekend. I have one friend who is in a fraternity, and he talks about the introductions that he gets because of it - a lot of people who are big in the business industry.
    Clubs and Activities

    I'm in some fairly nerdy clubs myself - a group for conlanging, and i'm also part of a living-learning community (LLC). I do recommend LLC's, especially for your first year. It has really helped me to gain a circle of friends with similar interests.

    There is the Old Well, which if you get a drink of water on the first day, you can ace all of your classes; it doesn't actually produce water anymore though, so they give out bottled waters. During finals, there is a tradition of students streaking through all or most of the libraries (there are at least 10 libraries). there is always a big blowout when Duke goes up against UNC in basketball.

    UNC is one of the more expensive public schools in NC, but it has a great campus life, and a great many campus affiliations; I'm planning on studying abroad in China next summer, and I'm considering a school which is exclusively connected with UNC Chapel Hill

    Go to Franklin street! There 21+ and underrage clubs, restaurants, coffee shops, even these really cute cupcake restaurant. It's great to go to a bar and watch a UNC-Duke game - Go Tarheels!

    For a college cafeteria, the food is usually pretty good! I do get tired of it from time to time, but there is always the smoothie shop, Subway, or any of the other restaurants on campus.

    There is often something going on in the dorms, whether it's a barbecue or a recycling drive. The dorm I'm in is suite-style, so I really get to know the people in my suite, but not as much for the rest of the people in my dorm.

    As previously stated, it is hard, but worth it. You end up learning a lot.

    Go to your professor's office hours! It helps to get to know them, especially if you need an excuse, help with a paper, anything.

On days when the late night bus doesn't run there is a walking team who will escort you back to your dorm/car whatever. There are multiple emergency stations and severe weather sirens.

My favorite band came to both venues 2x in my freshman year alone. If you tire of Chapel Hill you can take the bus to Raleigh or Durham relatively cheaply and safely.

    The food isn't your parent's home cooking but it isn't bad either. There are always vegetarian options and a great salad bar. There is seasonal fruit but sometimes the fruit options are a bit sad. If you have a scholarship just get the unlimited meal plan.
    Dorm Life

    Depending on where you live dorm life is great. As a freshman, you NEED to be on south campus. South campus is a 10-20 minute walk from where your classes will be, but the atmosphere is awesome and not something you should miss out on your freshman year. North campus dorms are for people who study, A LOT. There's nothing wrong with living on North Campus, but expect to see less people wandering the halls of your dorm.
    Academic Rigor

    Carolina is no joke; it is one of the top universities in the nation. That being said, it is possible to get by with less studying than a super nerd and still pass (and even excel) in your classes. Don't come here expecting to make an A on every assignment unless you put that much effort into everything, otherwise it won't happen.

    Make sure you do well on your SAT's. The average high school GPA of incoming Carolia freshmen is 4.7. At my school, there was no way you could even get a 4.7 so test scores became important in really comparing you to the competition. If you have a unique experience in life be sure to write about it in your application essay. UNC is looking for students who have unique experiences and can bring those to the campus. Carolina students are concerned about the world surrounding them so make sure to get plenty of community service.

    I feel extremely safe on campus. There is no where near the violence that I hear happening at other schools. Campus police drive around at night, there is a bus line that runs until 3AM every night, and programs such as SafeWalk to walk you home from a library or some other place at night.

There are also classes where the grad distribution shows that 95% of people made an A. Everything really varies by class and department.     Join everything. People say to just take it easy your first semester, but if you join and participate in everything. You will get a huge support system and enjoy your first year much more than if you just hang around watching others have fun.

    The University of North Carolina takes much pride in the safety of its students. Most notably, we have a system that will send emails out to all students alerting them if anything strange or suspicious happens on campus. Nonetheless, it is important to remember that UNC is an open campus, so it is quite difficult to protect students form all dangers that can occur. Therefore, before attending, students are required to take a short course informing them of the dangers of alcohol and drugs, which can be found on any college campus. Also, Chapel Hill offers self-defense classes and special programs that aid in teaching students safety precautions.
    Greek Life

    Greek life is big at Chapel Hill, like many other large universities. Although some of the organizations are fairly private, they add a special dynamic to the nature of the campus. Besides the parties that greek organizations are typically known for, they host many volunteer events and allow for members to become active in the community, while encouraging others to do so as well.

    It is very well known the there is a historical rivalry between UNC and Duke. For that reason, during basketball season and after we win against our rivals, nearly every student on campus leaves their dorm rooms and runs across campus to Franklin Street. Franklin Street is a popular location on campus located in downtown Chapel Hill that has all of our major restaurants, boutiques, convenient stores, and night clubs. After the game, all of the students meet here and turn the street into a big festival. There are people that jump over fires and engage in various other activities during this time. Aside from this, Chapel Hill has many other school traditions that are all outlined in a book that first year students receive at orientation.
    What to do for fun

    There is always something happening on campus. With over 400 clubs and groups on campus, someone is always having an event. I cannot count how many concerts and plays that were put on throughout my first year. I would have never expected to have big-name pop stars and rap artists come to my school and perform exclusively for our enjoyment. In addition to this, we have movie nights, a rock climbing wall in the gym, and club sports for those students who are not student athletes.
    Food and Dining

    The food in the dining halls is not that great after the first few weeks on campus. It gets very repetitive and less appealing as time goes on. However, there are numerous restaurants spread throughout the campus and nearby that students are welcomed to eat at, like Chick-Fil-A and Chipotle.
    Dorm Life

    The first-year students at UNC most likely will not be staying in the best dorms on campus. Majority of them are co-ed and suite-style. It is important to be able to live with one or more individuals even if they are not the ideal roommates. I can honestly say that living in a dorm on campus, which is mandatory for first year students, allowed me to meet a lot more people than I would have otherwise. Dorm communities are extremely interactive at UNC in order to assist with building social bonds between students. There are many events throughout the year ranging from super bowl parties to informational meeting about life on campus. Essentially, it is as fun as you allow it to be.
    Academic Rigor

    Even the most competent scholars in high school have come to Chapel Hill and found it quite different from what they're used to. I graduated third in my high school senior class with an abundance of college credit hours under my belt. With this previous experience, I really did not expect to be challenged too much by college courses. Nonetheless, even I found myself readjusting my study habits drastically throughout my first semester in order to receive grades that satisfied my standards. My biggest piece of advice to prospective students, even if you do not plan on attending UNC, is to read EVERYTHING and never catch yourself falling behind on assignments. If you keep this in mind and report to class regularly, then a lot of stress will be alleviated in the long run.

    The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is looking for the most well rounded students. Many people are discouraged from applying because they think that the university is strictly academics. However, after coming to Carolina, I have discovered that there are students on this campus in all types of positions. Although, grades are important, one must remember that college is more than a place to come and take courses. It is an instrument to be used to advance one's position in the world through social encounters, extracurricular activities, and many other mediums.

    Stripping through the library during finals, flash mobs, Halloween on Franklin St., dropping everything to sing Sweet Caroline or In My Mind I'm going to Carolina -- there's no shortage of UNC traditions! As for locations the arboretum is a super cool place to unfold a hammock and a lot of the buildings were the birth place of huge scientific break throughs and historic events. Also nowhere beats the Dean Dome during a Duke game.

    UNC is rated number one in value every year and it shows. I've taken classes at other colleges and they can't touch what UNC has to offer for the price.

    There are so many clubs for every interest imaginable, but outside of campus Chapel Hill is a great city with lots of museums, clubs, concerts etc. Also Raleigh and Durham are just a short bus ride away!

    The cafeteria gets old quickly, but organizations FLO really push to get healthy fair, local and organic food on campus. There are occasional on-campus farmer's markets to buy groceries at, but I would love to see a permeant place to buy good fresh food, especially vegetables.

    Dorms are small and not ideal. It's hard to cook. It is also expensive to live on-campus which makes it hard for students on a budget. But it is fun to live so close to some awesome people, and to be on such a bustling campus 24-7.

    I feel like I am learning all that I need to know, and that I am challenged to push my boundaries. But I am not stressed to the point that school work limits my ability to explore during my time outside of class.

    Find the joy in your classes. Treat them like a fantastic show or a puzzle and you will get so much more than if you see them as boring classes.

    Any driven, motivated, intelligent, and open minded student will flourish. Carolina seeks to be cutting edge, liberal, and progressive so anyone hard set on traditions or resistant to change will struggle here. Also, Carolina is a demanding, competitive school and it can be hard not to get a negative attitude about competition. You must be mature and keep a cool head, be there for the right reasons.

    Providing gratuitous financial aid, laptop grants, a reasonable public school sticker price AND a top class education that will guarantee you a great job or grad school, along with countless opportunities in travel and research are truly what make Chapel Hill the best value school in the nation. You will guaranteed get the most for your money here, plain and simple.
    What to do for fun

    Those used to a big city lifestyle may be hard pressed to have fun in Chapel Hill's suburban setting. Personally, I enjoy the campus and all there is to do there but it is certainly not for everyone, especially if you do not have a car. There's always parties at the fraternities although I would not advise that as a mode of fun, but the sports events are stellar and a great joy to be a part of as a spectator. The planetarium, art museum, and various concerts and shows through out the year are wonderful and great fun for anyone who enjoys the arts. You can have fun at Carolina if you look for it with an open mind,

    The dining halls are utterly hit and miss, hardly worth getting a really expensive meal plan. Some days the selection and quality are good but others are just miserable. Lenoir and Rams dining halls are okay but every once and a while you simply have to go to one of the local restaurants to remember what a real piece of pizza tastes like. I do rather enjoy all the health conscious options offered though, mostly in Lenoir.
    Dorm Life

    It all depends on what dorm style you get and who you room with. Chapel Hill's residence style halls with a single bathroom for the floor can be fun but are only advised to the most social of people. Many social activities and group building activities are offered but some residence halls do have a reputation for being cold and private. The super suite, although hard to obtain, is an amazing rooming accommodation at Chapel Hill and provides just the right amount of privacy and exposure. Facilities vary greatly as some buildings are lackluster while others are gorgeous and spacious.
    Academic Rigor

    You shall get your bang for your buck. I have not started my first semester yet but the courses offered are definitely intriguing, bountiful, and challenging even from an outside view. Friends I have talked to say they feel challenged but not overwhelmed. Good study habits and self-motivation are essential to achieving at this school. You can not party all weekend and make straight A's by any means.

    Do not stress if you do not have the highest GPA and/or test scores. Chapel Hill values diversity and originality in thought, so really put all of yourself into your essays. UNC stresses the search for well-rounded students so be sure to emphasize any extracurricular, leadership activities, or community service you may have done over the years. Study hard for your SAT and be sure to take challenging courses. Chapel Hill considers course rigor and weighted GPA rather than unweighted GPA. Best of luck, it's a tough school and it's only getting more competitive to get into.

    What to do for fun

    Attend all of the school sporting events. Even if you are not a lacrosse or baseball fan, it is free and is quite an experience regardless. Hanging at the Pit gives you a chance to meet some interesting people. Franklin Street during a big win for the basketball team is a Must-See event. You won't be sorry. Carrboro, very nearby, offers a different pace of life and has excellent dining opportunities as well as many outdoor events throughout the year.

    The food courts may not be something to write home about, but Franklin St is close by and has more variety than you can ask for.

    I do not know, I did not live in the dorms, but I assume at least average.

    UNC has all kinds of clubs and is conveniently located next to Franklin Street which has all kinds of great restaurants and stores.

    The dining halls serve a number of different and delicious types of food. If you are going to live in a dorm, then a meal plan is required so check out the cafeterias before you decide to live in a dorm and see if they are really what is best for you.

    Be wise in choosing a roommate if you have a choice. Strongly consider whether or not dorm life is for you before signing on to live in a dorm.

    Depending on the major, there will most likely be much reading, or math problem sets. From everyone I have spoken to, UNC Chapel Hill requires a lot of dedication in order to make good grades.

    Be sure not to wait until the last minute in order to apply. Also, it would highly benefit you and the women and men who work in offices if you are polite to them. They do a lot of really hard work sorting through tons of paperwork and they deserve respect.

    One of the best things that I can say about the University of North Carolina is the greenery. Out of all of the colleges I have visited aside from Elon University, UNC Chapel Hill has one of the best organized outlines for plants I have seen.     AWESOME! The sororities and fraternities are amazing. The private chefs, the wild parties, and the test files are all a hugeeee way to get ahead. Plus all Greeks help each other. Like this year I was offered 4 different internships just for being in a sorority. It is the best.

    The cafeteria is meh okay. Then again I am a food snob who wasn't raised on mass quantity meals. The other options like Chick-fil-a are awesome and if you live in Granville the Agora is pretty good with only a small number of students and more options. If you go Greek (aka join a fraternity or sorority) you get a private chef to prepare your meals and skip the campus food plan. The food in sororities and fraternities is unmatched and better than most restaurants.
    Dorm Life

    Granville is the best deal. For $70 more a year you get the chance to bring a car, a swimming pool, your own cafeteria and gym that other dorm kids don't get. It is Greek oriented so if you are going to join a sorority or fraternity it is a must. The other dorms are okay and you get the freshmen experience, but the convenience of Granville and the proximity makes it a must
    Academic Rigor

    It is hard. Big classes, professors who don't give leeway and strict grading criteria are part of the game. Work hard and it pays off though.

    Volunteer. Make sure you do activities related to your future studies, Job shadow, get involved in research. Make yourself stand out!

    I am a huge proponent and user of the Safe Walk Program. After 10.30 or 11.00 PM, safe walkers hang around outside of the libraries and ask you if you would like a safe walk home. I always say yes, because you never want to walk more than a half mile back to your dorm at night. Plus, you get to talk to someone and its free!
    Greek Life

    There are many many fraternities and sororities. Some party alot, some host benefit runs, some don't drink, some just study and some make music. If you want a close knit group of people, this is the place to come. Watch out though, because the greek fees do add up on top of tuition.
    Clubs and Activities

    SO many clubs to choose from. Fall Fest is a big festival where all the clubs and groups set up their posterboards and try to recruit you. It's really helpful, but somewhat overwhelming. All of the clubs I've participated in have been perfect for me. You just have to find where you best fit.

    Every student should love this school. (unless you like engineering and then we just don't have that here).

    Franklin Street is where the fun is. Halloween is one of the legendary nights at Carolina. Everyone dresses up and it's a huge party. There are some great food joints and cafes along the street. If you're feeling like shopping, there is a bus that takes you to the nearest mall, which is extremely nice. It has a movie theatre, nice restaurants (for expensive dates) and shopping!

    Dining halls have just been recently renovated, so they look really nice. The food is good and there are several stations with different styles of food. The only hitch is, apart from the salad and fruit bar, there are not many fresh produce options available.

    There is alot going on in the dorms! My freshman year, I was in the furthest dorm away from campus, Hinton James. That walk everyday prevented me from gaining the freshman fifteen, but was also really annoying. The RAs are amazing and extremely friendly and helpful. They are beginning to renovate the South Campus freshman dorms, so once that is finished, Dorm Life will be rated a full 5 stars.
    Academic Rigor

    Carolina only expects the best from their students. If you aren't always tired and exhausted from the work-load and difficulty, you're doing something wrong.
    Tips for prospective students

    The professors are always willing to help, you just have to ask them. Don't be afraid to be a freshman and just do the typical freshman things. You'll regret not doing them once you're a sophomore.

    Carolina has the most beautiful, well taken care of campus I've ever been to. We have the most spirited sports fans, especially our Tarheel basketball team. It is a large campus, but it has the small campus feel, because you see someone you know everywhere you go.

    A few minor crimes or accidents happen now and again but only about 3-4 per year. The reason being mostly because the campus is in the middle of a large city. The only crimes that ever happen are at 3 AM or later, but nothing good ever happens past 3 AM anyway. If you stay in groups during the odd hours of the night you will be safe. During the day, nothing bad happens. Police patrol the campus frequently.

    Humans vs. Zombies is held every semester at Chapel Hill. There is a 10-15 min rave held in the student union and a streaking event at the undergrad House Library every semester during finals week.

    Clubs, activities, and student organizations are always fun ways to fill your extra time. There are tons of ways to get involved. Going to Fall Fest will be the best way to find what is available. Aside from that, there are always plays, concerts, ballets, and movies to watch. The student organization CUAB organizes movies that students can see for free every weekend (though these are payed for by tuition), there are movies to see at the varsity theater on Franklin Street, and there are many things to watch at Memorial Hall. It's also fun to hang out on Franklin Street with your friends when you have nothing else to do.
    Food and Dining

    There are many places to get food, and with all of the restaurants on Franklin Street, it's impossible not to find food that you will like. There is Mediterranean food, Chinese food, Japanese food, Thai food, fast food, frozen yogurt places, ice cream shops, pizza shops, and everything else you can imagine. The dining hall, however, can be hit or miss. Most days it has decent food, but sometimes one or two of the meals it serves that day are pretty bad. On those days, going out to eat at one of the many local restaurants is best. Everything is always edible at the dining hall, and they do have special events quite frequently with food much different from the norm. On the days the food is bad, it is usually undercooked or the meals are just boring and not creative. If you want good/great food everyday, you can always get it.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life is exceptional. South campus dorms are usually more exciting and friendly because this is were mostly underclassmen stay. North campus is mostly for upperclassmen. Making friends is extremely easy if you live in a dorm. Generally, each floor of every dorm meets each other and most people on that floor are friends, but it is easy to make friends with people that aren't on your floor. It's just easier to befriend the people on your floor because you see them all the time.
    Academic Rigor

    This school is obviously tough. Almost all of your learning is done outside of the classroom through reading, writing, or homework assignments. Most professors will tell you that you will be doing 3 hours of homework for their class each day after lecture. This is generally true. For more difficult classes, this can be closer to 4-5 hours (ei. math,science, or typical weed out classes). For easier classes, this can be closer to 1-2 hours (ei. language classes or non weed out intro level classes that people take to fulfill their general education classes). Either way, it usually averages out to 3 hours of work after each lecture. Plan your schedule accordingly.
    Tips for prospective students

    You need to look like and be a student the school wants to represent them. Aside from the stuff everybody knows you need to do to get into school (good grades, extra curriculars, etc), you need to show the school your character through the stuff you do. The activities and extra curricular activities you do should reflect the kind of person you are. Also, you need to write good essays. Again, the essays you write should show what kind of person you are and why the school needs a student/person like you. You need to show that you will build this schools reputation and uphold its values.

    I consider the campus to be very safe. I feel comfortable walking around campus at night, but there are certain places where you should not go alone or at night in general. There is a large campus police force and many emergency help resources available to students.

    There is a thriving Greek life community here, but it is not something in which most people are involved. There are over 50 sororities and fraternities, including honors and service fraternities and sororities.

    You can find every type of person at UNC. There are stereotypes, as there are at any university, but the student body is extremely diverse. That is part of the reason that I love this school. I have met some of the most amazing and unique people at UNC. One thing that every student here has in common is the drive to succeed. UNC students are all ambitious and hard-working.
    Bang for the buck

    In terms of the quality of education for the price, UNC is the best deal. You get a top-notch education for less than half of the price of private schools, if you are an in-state student. While the cost of a college education is still high, UNC truly offers the best bang for the buck.
    What to do for fun

    On campus, there are so many fun clubs to join! If you can think of it, Carolina has it. There are also many intramural sports. My favorite thing to do is attend all of the Tar Heel sporting events! Franklin Street, running along North Campus, has lots of little shops and restaurants to explore. The Varsity Theater is there, too, where they show $4 movies. The Carolina Performing Arts Center is another fantastic venue to see all different types of performances.
    Food and Dining

    The dining halls are nice and clean, but the food is not always the best. There is a great salad bar and sandwich station, both of which are always available at lunch and dinner. The breakfast options are limited and not the healthiest. Also, the hours that they are open are often frustrating because it is closed from 10-11am, 2:30-5pm, and they close at either 8 or 8:30pm.
    Dorm Life

    Living in the dorms is a great way to experience UNC! You are seconds away from your best friends, and you get to meet so many new people. The dorms are all nice, clean, and safe. I would highly recommend living in the dorms for at least two years so you can stay immersed in the campus and community.
    Academic Rigor

    Carolina definitely lives up to its reputation as being the number one public university in the nation and as one of the Public Ivies. The course work is difficult, but I find it to be fairly manageable. However, A's can be hard to earn.
    Tips for prospective students

    The biggest tip that I would give prospective students is to come visit Carolina. Seeing the campus in person and meeting students really helps one get a better feel for the school and community. Another tip would be to do your research and ask questions! Make a list of activities or things you love or enjoy and see if you can find it at Carolina. Make sure that it is the right fit for you, and don't be afraid to ask questions. I love when people ask me about Carolina, and I know other students feel the same way!

    The campus is pretty safe, and there are lots of provisions, such as the P2P shuttle and escorts, to allow for safety when traveling at night. Unfortunately, some crimes do occur, but as long as you remain aware of your surroundings and take reasonable precautions, safety is not a huge issue.

    Greek life is active on campus, but it does not dominate the social scene. Take it or leave it based on your interests.

    There are safety towers all throughout the campus in which you could go to in an emergency. They even have special systems in place to have someone walk you back if you were by yourself late at night. One of the best safety regulations is the student responsibility to look out for others.

    It's about 20+ and for out-of-state its about 40+. I would definitely recommend to all North Carolinians, especially with scolarships/financial aid.

    There are a ton of clubs to join and there are always events and Franklin to go to on a weekend.

    The buffet style that they have at both halls is again, both good and bad. I love that there's always a lot of option(even if they're quite repetitive), but I also hate that there's always a lot of options. Freshman 15 here I come!

    It's mandatory for all first-years to live on campus which is both good and bad. I like experiencing dorm life and I get along well with my roommate and suite mates, but at the same time I'm used to having my own space(and bathroom!) that its been a little hard.

    At any point in time, at any place on campus, a student should be able to see two bright blue campus security lights. At these security lights, a student simply presses the button, and armed security guards are summoned immediately to that location. In addition, their are police stations and substations spread throughout Chapel Hill. AlertCarolina also keeps the students informed via Text Message and E-Mail about crimes that occur in the area. Not once have I ever felt like my safety was compromised or put in a less than comforting situation.
    Greek Life

    While I, personally, did not go Greek, I do however have numerous friends involved in Greek life and attend many of their socials. They are all friendly and willing to answer any questions that you might have about getting involved in Greek life.
    Clubs and Activities

    First semester freshman year, I received information about rock-climbing, camping, hiking, backpacking, rugby, water-polo, hockey, football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, weightlifting, snowboarding, skiing, dodge-ball, baseball, ping-pong, and too many others to count on this survey. Ultimately, the opportunities for any activity you can think of is or will be available to you.

    UNC is an excellent school for those who enjoy the challenge of academia. Yummm (Dining halls also offer gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian options)

    As a freshman I lived on South Campus in Hinton James. South Campus' suite style dorms give you the opportunity to bond with other first-years who are experiencing the same things as you. It isn't noisy or obnoxious as some people claim it is...it's amazing. Although it is farther from campus, it is definitely worth it! (and the walk is only 15 minutes, slowly paced and 7-10 at a fast pace, not to mention the shortcuts!). The dorms are clean also! Custodians clean suite styled bathrooms daily!

    Prepare yourself to be challenged academically! UNC is a highly prestigious university known for it's tough academics. It has one of the best chemistry departments, business schools, and journalism schools in the country, as well as being a top ranked public university! Don't expect to come to this school and for it to be a breeze, you will have to study hard and develop good skills.

    The dorms are very communal in that they are rather close to each other. The North Campus dorms are much nicer than the South Campus dorms (where most first years live) and are much closer to campus. Many of the South Campus dorms have recently been renovated (and many more are scheduled for renovations) which has really improved the overall experience of dorm life as an undergraduate at Carolina.

    UNC-Chapel Hill's professors expect the highest level of academic success form their students. It is not enough to simply attend class and expect the same grades you achieved in high school.     There are Emergency Blue Light locations all over campus. Each one is in view of at least one other. If you are in any sort of situation that requires security/police assistance, you hit the button on the Blue Light. If you (think you) are being followed, you can hit the buttons as you pass and campus security will respond to the pattern. There is also an alert system to warn of severe weather and alert to any relevant crime on campus or in the surrounding local area.

    I have no personal experience with the Greek System at UNC, but I know that there are many sororities and fraternities that have a lot going on.

    I commute about 85 miles to attend UNC, so I don't get to spend much time on or off campus outside of classes, but there is always something going on. There are so many student groups and other organizations on campus that sponsor events regularly and the town of Chapel Hill has a lot going on as well.

    I find the food in the dining halls to be of less than stellar quality and highly over-priced, and the selection of restaurants on campus is extremely limited. There is, however, a fairly good selection of places on nearby Franklin Street.

    This is a required field, but as a transfer student I haven't had to live in the dorms. While I don't have first-hand experience, I have several friends who live in the dorms and enjoy it very much. However, some dorms are better than others, I'm told.

    Whether you are coming straight from high school or transferring from a community college or other four-year institution, be prepared for greater academic rigor than you are used to. Everyone attending UNC was among the top students at their respective school previous to UNC. Not everyone can be at the top here.

    Lenoir Dining Hall added a locally-focused, organic restaurant last year. This year, UNC made up for that conscious decision by providing a Wendy's in the neighboring Student Union. Despite this greasy addition, the dining halls have plenty of options-- even for those on restricted diets. The vegetarian and raw foods are never that great, but there is an on-campus Farmer's Market once a week. You often end up overpaying with a meal plan, but there are plenty of off-campus options near by, including a wonderful co-op grocery. Oftentimes student groups will provide discounted lunches to support charitable causes-- always a great and tasty alternative!
    Dorm Life

    Dorms are clean and safe. Although not the quietest of places, you can always find a study room in a nearby building. Food is never far away and there is a great bus shuttle that will take you to central campus in no time.
    Academic Rigor

    I transferred to UNC-CH from Appalachian State University and felt much more challenged by UNC's students and staff. Although you can choose to take some easier classes, ultimately the caliber of instruction is very high and professors have great expectations for their students. General education courses, particularly in the sciences, are competitive and can be very challenging. Ultimately, your experience will be what you make of it. If you choose to pick professors based on the difficulty level assigned to them on RateMyProfessor, then you might not be challenged in the way you deserve to be.

    Take advantage of all of the free resources available to you on campus. Schedule a mock interview with someone at Career Services, attend a lecture given by a visiting speaker, get your essay proofread by someone at the Writing Center. All of these services are at your disposal-- so use them!

    Any time we beat Duke in basketball, we rush to Franklin Street from the Dean Dome, a mile and half run of screaming and glee. We also have Halloween on Franklin. 20,000 people come and are merry in some of the best Halloween costumes I've seen.
    Bang for the buck

    Being out of state, I'm paying the most buck for the bang. However, the education is one of the best in the country, and the name UNC holds weight in the real world.
    What to do for fun

    Franklin is an awesome place to grab dinner with friends, and go to bars. There are a couple clubs that are ok. Any kind of sporting event is going to be awesome, ESPECIALLY basketball games, when our boys can get it together. The Carolina spirit is in every student on campus, and we'll cheer for our teams forever and always.
    Food and Dining

    The food is definitely edible, especially since they revamped Lenoir Dining Hall two years ago. However, after eating it for 6 months straight, finding something you want to eat becomes a little bit more difficult.
    Dorm Life

    Especially as a freshman, the dorm is a perfect place to meet people and find friends that you'll have for the rest of your life. Not all roommates are perfect but you always can find someone you'll get along with. The dorms are typical college dorms, but not small enough that things are uncomfortable. The walk to north campus can be long sometimes, but never to the point where it's unbearable.
    Academic Rigor

    UNC challenged me in a way I had never encountered in high school. But the teachers know there stuff and want you to learn as much as you can, and love what you know. You have to put your head down and work through it, but it's worth it.
    Tips for prospective students

    Come here with an open mind, and you will find that there are thousands of people you'll want to meet and know. The best is that they are undergoing the same challenges as you are, so use them to help you through the tough times and laugh during the good times.

    It's great. There is a bus system that runs every night from 7PM to 3AM called the P2P (Point-to-Point). The bus route includes Franklin St. and all the major dorms and landmarks on campus.

    Join UNC women's rugby team. It's a club sport so it's open to any girl of any athletic ability and body type. Best group of girls on campus.

    There are two dining halls: Rams Head on south campus and Lenoir on north campus. Rams Head dining hall is the only dining hall open on the weekends and the food is considerably worse on the weekends.

    Live in a freshmen dorm your first year. Traditional freshmen dorms are Hinton James, Craige, and Ehringhaus.
    Tips for prospective students

    Don't buy books until you have gone to class for the first week. Meet as many people as you can the first two weeks. Afterwards, cliques start to form. Don't feel the need to rush in the fall semester. There is a spring rush. Get involved in something. Try something new.

    I can't say that I've ever felt unsafe here at UNC. It could be 2 in the morning and I would feel comfortable walking all the way across campus alone. Now I'm not saying I would actually do that, but that's how safe I feel here.

    Alive! Greek is a big factor for most people on campus mainly because they have a sorority or fraternity for just about an religion, race, or idea.

    Drinking from the old well. This is the tradition on the first day of classes to bring good luck in your grades for the semester, but beware, if you're gonna do it, get there early due to how long the line can get! (Also, Duke now and will forever suck)

    UNC is definitely about the best bang for your buck. They're known for their gracious amounts of financial aid, as well as low cost (for in state students mainly.) I'm out of state, but it was cheaper for me to come to UNC than the even stay in state! If price is a main problem on deciding whether to come to UNC, then that's the least of your worries :)
    What to do for fun

    Franklin St. This is kind of the center part of the night life. For the most part, all the clubs are off this street, as well as fraternity row and most of the house party locations. Then in the daytime it's full of most of the stores you'll need. Also can't forget the clubs and gatherings UNC has. For example, screen on the green. With a school as big as UNC, there's always something to do.
    Food and Dining

    The food is decent. They have really good days, and then they have bad days. As for the dining halls though, I do have to say they're extremely nice and the workers are even nicer.
    Dorm Life

    I absolutely love living on campus. If you're looking to make a lot of friends and get to know your classmates, south campus is for you. Specifically Ehringhaus and Craige since those just got remodeled. UNC has pretty nice dorms compared to most schools. I've seen some pretty bad ones at other schools where the rooms basically feel like cells, but thankfully UNC isn't like that. Even the worst dorms are decent.
    Academic Rigor

    If you're looking for a school who works hard and plays hard, UNC is the place. Its not only hard to get into UNC, but to stay here as well, so make sure youre prepared to work even harder in college than you did in high school.
    Tips for prospective students

    Do good on your test scores! Also, just because you have average numbers (I.e. grades and test scores), essays can make or break you! So make sure your application shines in ALL places, and if it doesn't in some, make up for it in the Rest of the application.

    There are two cafeterias on campus that serve pretty good food. There are also tons of different restaurants on Franklin St. from Thai to McDonalds. No matter what your taste buds desire there is something for everyone.

    I have never felt uncomfortable or unsafe on this campus. There are emergency signals everywhere, a safe-walk program to accompany you if you don't want to walk back home from the library in the dark, and many other programs.

    There is an active greek life, but there are plenty of things to do for people who aren't involved. There is no great division between Greek and non-Greek, and there are several events that are a collaborative effort.

    I have always felt safe on the Carolina campus. It is well lit at night and there are almost always other people around.

    There is a huge Greek life at Chapel Hill. Nearly every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights there are fraternity parties and sorority/fraternity mixers. There are also many events done by the Greek life to raise money for their charities.

    While there are quite a few clubs and activities, it is difficult to join and find out about them without knowing someone who is in the club or knows someone else in the club.

    For in-state students it is extremely affordable (for an American University) for it's reputation. However with all of the recent scandals involving Chapel Hill this reputation is slipping so it may be less worth the money in years to come.

    For fun most students join clubs and participate in their activities, attend fraternity parties off-campus and go to basketball/football games. Apart from this there is not an extreme amount of things to do in Chapel Hill, especially if you are too young to go to a bar. There is not much hiking in the area and there are not all that many good places just to hang out besides in the quad.

    Chapel Hill is filled with local restaurants offering a huge variety of ethnic cuisines at reasonable prices. There are many options for vegetarians and vegans and there is a lot of locally grown food sold.

    I was lucky enough to live in a dorm (Horton) my freshman year that has huge rooms and only four people to a bathroom. Compared to other colleges, this is a really good deal! The biggest downfall of dorm life is how expensive it is compared to off-campus options.
    Academic Rigor

    Chapel Hill has a reputation to uphold that it is extremely academically rigorous. Because of this reputation, in my experience there is a huge amount of busy work to do for various classes and it seems that teachers give out a certain number of As, Bs and Cs to maintain this reputation.
    Tips for prospective students

    Chapel Hill is a good University for students looking for that typical college experience. Expect to do a lot of busy work in your courses, be shamed if you are not bursting with school spirit and expected to rush for a sorority or fraternity. Also expect to eat fabulous local food.

    With a huge Greek life, an extremely popular basketball team and gallons of school pride, Carolina is ideal for that typical college experience that so many look for. Chapel Hill is the stereotypical college town with not much else to it besides the school and some fantastic local restaurants so it is easy to feel trapped if you don't like the university. The academics include a lot of busy work to keep the difficulty level high and there are many 400 person lecture classes during the first couple years of attendance.

    Both times that I have visited the school, I've enjoyed the food at Rams Head dining hall. There is definitely a wide variety of options from Italian, to Southern style, to Japanese.

    The Greenwich Village is a great place to live, although it is not where most underclassmen live. Once again, I have very little knowledge about campus life at this school, but I do know that most freshmen live on South campus.

    I have not attend the school yet, but I heard that students must learn the true meaning of responsibility in order to be successful in their rigorous courses.

    There are so many really awesome traditions that it's impossible to list. The three most popular traditions are drinking from the Old Well, Rushing Franklin, and singing the alma mater. A classic symbol of the university is the Old Well (a water fountain) and every year on the first day of classes students line up to drink from the Old Well because the legend is that if you drink from it, you will get a 4.0. The next tradition is that after every Duke basketball game we win, or every basketball championship, everyone just charges to Franklin Street. Finally, after every athletic event, win or lose, the team will line up in front of the stands and sing the alma mater with their fellow students.

    Even as an out of state student I found UNC to be a great value. Although it was more expensive than my in-state options, I think any penny I pay is worth it for this school.
    What to do for fun

    Fun things are available to students everywhere in Chapel Hill. There is always a fun activity on campus, athletic events are a blast, and Franklin Street boasts a multitude of things to do on weekends.

    The food is very good in the dining hall. There are tons of options, but dining hall can get monotonous no matter how good it is. On the bright side, Franklin Street offers a ton of great options for dining.

    The Student Store can be fairly pricey with their textbooks. I would recommend Amazon or another website and comparing to get the most bang for the buck.
    What to do for fun

    Many students go out to eat on Franklin Street which is right by campus. Sports, especially basketball, is another popular choice.
    Food and Dining

    The dining hall provides many options for students. Even students with special dietary needs can find a meal at the dining halls. The desserts are the best!
    Dorm Life

    The dorms on campus vary in their quality. Some, such as Hinton James, the infamous Ho-Jo, is known for its age and its long distance from campus. Others, such as Morrison, are fairly new. The room size also varies with dorms such as Parker having larger rooms.
    Academic Rigor

    The classes, while challenging, are not impossible. They do require a lot of analyzing, studying, reading and writing. Expect to put hours, not the night before, into studying for a test. Studying last minute will not result in a good grade.
    Tips for prospective students

    Take the chance to explore your interests! Take the first year to take a first-year seminar to look into a possible future career field or a passion. This is a great way to get an idea of what major is the best match for you.

    The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provides numerous opportunities for students to grow inside and outside of the classroom. Professors like to engage their class and make them analyze the material they are learning. The organizations on campus allow for chances to build up a resume, study abroad, help the community, research interests, and much more.
