Great for these types of students

Great for students who love the small town feel, making immediate, strong, and lasting relationships/friendship, like to interact with their campus and campus-like activities, like being able to connect with their professor on a higher, more personal level and for students who enjoy a high level of school spirit.

    Tips for prospective students

When going into any college, you need to make sure that you are focused and dedicated to your classes. College give you the opportunity to choose what general education classes that you would like to take, so take advantage of that and get into classes that interest you. Get involved on campus in anything that catches your eye. Don't be afraid to talk to other people of campus, they will be more than happy to help, answer, or just talk to you about anything. Believe it because it's true. Check out the university's library, cafeteria, entrances to dorms, and bookstore for information; because these are the major traffic areas for students, information is always posted there. Last but not least, UNC-P has A LOT to offer all levels of students. Because of the smaller size, they have the ability to do things that many of the larger universities cannot do. Enjoy the privileges!

    Bang for the buck

UNC-P is part of the University of North Carolina colleges so the education is absolutely excellent, however, the tuition is one of the less expensive of these schools.

    Am enjoying being here

The atmosphere is one in which you are able to meet people very quickly, and because of the smaller campus you are able to see them constantly, and form true friendships which is harder to do on larger campuses.

    Am learning a lot

All of the teachers have office hours which enable the students to get extra time if something does not click in class. Not many colleges can guarantee this 1 on 1 time.

Great for these types of students

If you love the small towns, and just being laid back.

    Tips for prospective students

If you come from a big city I strongly encourage you to visit the school and town for a weekend. We are finally getting a hotel!! Pembroke is home to me but there is nothing here yeah we have a walmart, mcdonalds, other fast food places, about 5 restaurants, and some other places. If your looking for places to hang out outside of school campus there is not much. Robeson county in general doesnt have anything anyway.

    Bang for the buck

the college tution is not that expensive

    Will enjoy being here

I have lived in Pembroke all of my life (for 16 years) and I am Native American just like mainly every one else in Pembroke. Its safe around here. There is not a huge crime rate at all. Yeah stuff happens but thats everywhere. I have visted the school like a million times and it is a very nice campus in my opinion.

    Will learn a lot

I have family that go to UNCP and they say that the learning environment is great!!

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students that like small schools setting. Students that go to University of North Carolina at Pembroke should be ready to learn. Pembroke isn't a party school but there is normally one every weekend. The campus is well kept and the people are very respectful here. I encourage people to attend UNCP.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Be well rested, most students think that staying up 'til four am is smart. trust me i thought the same thing and I soon found out that it makes life hard. - Talk to your teachers. Many teachers that seem stern in front of their class can actually be pretty nice in their office. - Get Involved! That's the only way to enjoy college. - Study , study study.

    Bang for the buck

Everyone knows that college is expensive. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke isn't the cheapest college, but it is affordable. Most students can just pick up a couple scholarships and then work-study and school is paid for. If you live on campus you get 125 dollars, approximately, on your Braves Card, which allows you to buy pretty much whatever you want on campus. You get a refund check, then during buy back season you get half your money back that you spent on books. the activities on campus, for attending students, are affordable. Most of the events are free.

    Am enjoying being here

There are a great variety of on-campus activities to be involved in bu,t on the weekends everyone tends to leave. Pembroke, North Carolina is a very small town and any kind of night-life activities are just a drive away. So if you have a car or know someone that drives then, anyone staying during the weekend can find a lot to do. There are normally on campus parties that are thrown by students in their apartments. Also the campus is small, its a ten minute walk from each end of the campus. So if you like to get in a couple more minutes of sleep, this school would be great.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers at UNCP are very dedicated to their students. In a typical classroom on the UNC-Pembroke campus , you will find maybe twenty students or less to one teacher, meaning that you will get more teacher to student interaction. The teachers also provide office hours , where students can walk in and talk about problems and concerns. This is a great way to get extra help in subject that you are struggling and this is the perfect opportunity to get to know your teacher, in my opinion., the more interaction time with your professors, the easier college will be.

Great for these types of students

It's great for people who like being in small towns. It's also great for people who need individualized attention. There's nothing to do in Pembroke except for going to nightclubs and shopping at Walmart. If you want to do something other nightclubs or Walmart, then go to another college.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to bed at a decent hour (before midnight). Read your syllabus when you first get it and continue to read it weekly throughout the semester, because all of your assignments are on your syllabus. Your teachers contact information and grading scale are also on the syllabus. Turn in your assignments on time, late is not accepted. Study for your tests and quizzes, take advantage of all extra credit opportunities, because teachers like it when you try. Some teachers give you two or three extra points on your final grade for that extra effort. If you have to eat in the cafeteria, then go to the sandwich station and the salad station.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition at UNCP is less expensive than other colleges. The tuition seems to increase every year. I had work study when I was a freshman, but I haven't been able to get it for the past two years even though my financial needs haven't changed since I was accepted there. It's like they give the work to whoever they want to give it to.

    Am enjoying being here

The university is nice, but it's boring. A lot of students have transferred to other colleges after a year or two at UNCP. There isn't much to really do. Lumbee Hall often gives students the 'run-around', and the university often makes decisions that affect the students without their (students) approval. Once I graduate, I'm NOT attending this college again.

    Am learning a lot

I've learned a lot in my classes. I've actually retained the information that I've learned in my major classes better than I did the information from other classes.

    Bang for the buck

Out of all the University of North Carolina schools Pembroke's Campus is the Cheapest but still of the best quality!!

    Am enjoying being here

Campus is wonderful, and you can walk from one end to the other in fifteen minutes or less. The campus is always refreshingly clean, and because of the Smoking rules, you don't tend to see cigarette butts laying around on our campus! The Givens Performing Arts center always has wonderful shows including the ballet, and often times famous comedians!

    Am learning a lot

I absolutely love going to class, because I know the professors are willing to take the time to make sure I learn the material and retain it, by using teaching methods that relate to students who learn from visual aids, by reading or writing, by hearing, and by doing. The professors balance each lecture so that no matter which way a student learns best, the lecture is guaranteed to be processed the right way.

Great for these types of students

Students who do not mind living in a rural area. Students who want to have a personal connection to their teacher. Students who will embrace cultural diversity.

    Tips for prospective students

It is VERY easy to overload your schedule. I have learned from personal experience that you cannot do everything and can be difficult to tell the people you respect, No. Go to bed at a somewhat decent hour, i.e., before 3:30 in the morning. When teachers say that college is a lot more work than high school, they really do mean it. It is a LOT of work. Teachers WILL NOT accept late work like they did in high school.

    Bang for the buck

Despite being the cheapest school in the UNC system, I believe that a student can get a more positive experience here than at some of the larger schools. Pembroke's recruiting slogan is Where learning gets personal. The quality of education at Pembroke is the envy of several of my friends who have gone to larger universities. Add to that the social experience from meeting so many people who share common interests with you and Pembroke is a hidden gem in southeast North Carolina.

    Am enjoying being here

The community here is very tight. Because it is a small school, you attach quickly to the people you live with in your dorm, and the people you study with within your major. The class size here is relatively small, even in the general education classes, so the teachers are able to call the students by name, rather than, You there in the back.

    Am learning a lot

Despite the university being off in a rural area, the quality of education there is excellent. The professors love their career choice and actively help the students outside of class if they ask for it.

Great for these types of students

Students who wish to stay focused, and those who do not do a lot of clubbing.

    Tips for prospective students

If you wish to have a good time here, it's probably best that you make a lot of friends to keep you company and to keep you occupied.

    Bang for the buck

Students get a good education for an affordable tuition.

    Am enjoying being here

The college campus itself is ok, but the town of Pembroke does not have much to offer.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers here are very helpful. They urge you to ask questions and make sure they answer the questions in detail.

Great for these types of students

I believe that UNC Pembroke would be great for students who aren't looking for trouble, want a small, safe campus, and are more devoted to their education than socializing. I have been told that in Pembroke you really have to look for trouble, and my mother told me that if I get in trouble then she knows that I was looking for it and that I will have NO excuse for my behavior. Students who want a close knit community and don't usually like interacting with a lot of people but would still like to have the opportunity available to them, would fit in quite nicely at UNC Pembroke as well. Although that is more a description of the criteria I used to decide that UNC Pembroke was right for me, really that's what would make the school right for anyone.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students, I would suggest rather than focusing on the perks available on campus and where your friends are attending school, you focus on what is affordable for you and your family (optimally a solution that won't leave you in debt), a school that provides a safe living atmosphere, a school that meets your academic needs/preferences, a school not to far from home (if you plan to stay in state, so that in case of emergency family could easily get to you), and a school that offers work study. However nice it might be for you to be around your friends and enjoy a good party every now and then, that's not what you're going to college for, hopefully, you're going to college to either further your education and make progress, or to make a difference in the world. As for friends, the friends that you might not see on campus weren't always your friends, at one point, they too were strangers, so consider college an opportunity to make new friends.

    Bang for the buck

I am the second oldest of four siblings, my older sister is going to be a junior in college the fall I begin, and my two younger brothers will graduate in 2015 and 2016. One of my parents is self-employed, and the other makes enough to pay the bills and put a little aside each month for a rainy day. Thank God the House signed for the tax cut extension compromise, I was glued to CNN until they made the announcement because my family wouldn't make it with $40 out of each paycheck. UNC Pembroke is an exceptional institution and thankfully also one of the most affordable in North Carolina, with a cost of $12,366.00 (2010-2011) for state residents, you don't get much better than that for a 4 year institution, you don't get much better than that unless you attend community college (which I am not knocking in any way). However, realistically, no one can deny that anything under $20, 000 nowadays isn't a steal when it comes to education.

    Will enjoy being here

Although I have never been on campus, I will be visiting during the February open house. It may sound crazy, but UNC Pembroke was my first choice and the only school I applied to. If you speak to either Christina Bell or Tony Lewis in the admissions office they will tell you that this is the school that I wanted to attend. Even though Pembroke has approximately 80 student organizations including Greek Life and Honors programs, these were not my priority. I have heard, from some locals visiting Charlotte, that every 4th of July there is a huge celebration in Pembroke and that the community is more like a family. Personally I like the sound of that. A current student, a 2011 graduate and personal friend of mine, told me which dorm rooms she thought were the best, and given that we have exactly the same preferences in living spaces, I am just going to work out any kinks that may arise on campus in the fall of 2012. I looked up the school's credentials, safety ratings, and asked all the students, faculty, and locals that I have encountered how they like the community. Having been told the school is extremely safe, diverse, and generally speaking an exceptional place to live, I know that I will love being on campus.

    Will learn a lot

With a student-faculty ration of 15:1 I would assume that one-on-one time is more readily available at UNC Pembroke than at other schools. Furthermore, having spoken to various admissions representatives, current and former students, the quality of education has been portrayed as one which is well-rounded and addresses students' personal and educational needs. Determining a major might be difficult if you begin school undeclared because UNC Pembroke offers 41 undergraduate programs, 17 graduate programs, and 1 certification programs. Personally I believe that a smaller school that has a variety of programs available and teachers willing to give students individual attention is the best type of school.

Great for these types of students

Those from small towns or those who are ready to get serious and do the work. If you are use to the big city life you might go bonkers until you get use to being in the country! for sure.

    Tips for prospective students

The University is in a very rural area, don't go out late at night alone especially if you are a female. There have been some ladies singled out and violated since they were in there car alone after hours. Two men work this tactic together. There are plenty on nice people there you need to be careful.

    Bang for the buck

Moderately affordable but price increases are here as well as other schools. The old adage of supply and demand is real.

    Am enjoying being here

Occasionally I visit the campus to see professors, people for the most part are very helpful and friendly.

    Am learning a lot

Graduated in 1979 and coming back for an add-on licensure. Taking on-line classes, works for my busy schedule and prices are a little less than the larger schools. Learning a great deal in my field of study.

Great for these types of students

This would be a great choice for someone who enjoys the peace and quiet that living in a small town brings: no loud music in the dorms or loud parties that would distract from studying.

    Tips for prospective students

It would be a good idea to visit the campus beforehand. Not everyone likes staying on campus all the time, but there isn't much in the way of entertainment in the town around the school.

    Bang for the buck

UNCP is a great school in the University of North Carolina schools. You are getting as good of an education as someone going to the bigger schools at a much more affordable price.

    Am enjoying being here

I come from a small town and I knew that a large college would be too overwhelming. UNCP is great because of the small town feel. I have already made so many close friends.

    Am learning a lot

I love my classes and the teachers. They are always willing to work with you if you are having trouble in their class. You aren't just a number like you would be in a big university.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a great school for students who like to be on a smaller campus with fewer students in a class, so that they can get the one on one learning that they desire.

    Tips for prospective students

I would encourage students who are looking at this university as a choice for college to go ahead and apply. I would encourage them to be ready to read and study, but also make time to attend the events that the school hosts.

    Bang for the buck

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke makes sure students get the education that they paid for. When I attend my classes I hear non stop lectures until it's time for the class to end which means that I do not feel as if I wasted my money.

    Am enjoying being here

I am really enjoying attending this University because it offers me an opportunity to experience life away from my family. This university also has a lot of entertainment throughout the week which makes me feel right at home.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning how to communicate well with others and how to better myself as a writer in my English class. I am also learning how to balance studying and having time to socialize, so that I will meet new individuals.

    Campus Safety

we have campus police that are always on scene no matter what happens. they put there numbers on signs all over the campus, and there are also emergency buttons located all over the campus.

    Food and Dining

the cafe always has good food and there is a wing place right beside it just in case you aren't feeling up to eating the same kinds of food or if the cafe is serving something you don't like.

    Dorm Life

dorm space is okay depending on where you live. it is best that you try and find a good roommate or cool person to live with considering that is where most time will be spent. if anything happens between you and your roommate there are resident advisers that are there to help no matter what the situation is.

    Academic Rigor

the classes are great, learning is actually fun just make sure the right courses are picked. picking a class that is below your academic level will leave you bored and unsatisfied.

    Tips for prospective students

always do your work don't get caught up in trying to party and drink and be cool, because at the end of the day you need to succeed and get your degree to make a living so it is best you don't procrastinate and make excuses.

    In three sentences

the school is good at making you feel at home, the classes aren't over sized or stuffed to the brim. they actually care about us achieving what we want to do in life and they give us great adviser's to help us understand. pembroke is cultural every race is represented here.

    Campus Safety

In the entire four and a half years of my stay, there wasn't a SINGLE report of violent crime, and thefts were only on a petty level. Off-campus, the Robeson County swamps are notorious as a drug-trafficking pipeline. That culture has almost no impact upon the campus and its community, however.

    Greek Life

Rich and vibrant. Highly recommended and open to any and all interested parties.

    Clubs and Activities

SGA, sports, newspaper, yearbook, SUPERB broadcasting and drama departments, jazz band, foreign language and chess clubs, movie enthusiasts, photography club, biology club, history society, church groups, and much, much more.....

Great for these types of students

Those who enjoy a more rural setting and multicultural experiences.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Strong Native American traditions and sense of pride, including the outdoor historical drama Strike at the Wind.

    Bang for the buck

For the relatively low tuition, UNC Pembroke is a superb deal.

    What to do for fun

Definitely get involved in extracurricular activities, particularly the plays, music programs, sports, student government, and especially the world-class broadcasting center. You will have a blast!

    Food and Dining

Not the best, not the worst. Nothing to write home about.

    Dorm Life

This can be a tremendous amount of fun, although when I was an undergraduate, co-ed fraternizing could get you thrown out. Apparently, they now offer co-ed living.

    Academic Rigor

To be honest, it is possible to coast through a number (but not all) of the courses.

    Tips for prospective students

The single caveat I would extend is that the campus security personnel aren't the brightest stars in the firmament, and can be unusually severe if you anger them. I accidentally broke a window, and was dragged into a lengthy court battle over it.

    In three sentences

UNC Pembroke is nestled in a rural corner of the state, steeped in Native American culture, diverse in its attendees, and blessed with an excellent faculty.

    Campus Safety

The campus safety at Pembroke is excellent. I have always felt very safe. I say this because I always see police officers and police cars patrolling the campus to make sure every one is safe.

    Clubs and Activities

UNCP has an unlimited amount of clubs and organizations for every interest and needs.

Great for these types of students

UNCP is a great place for students who like every day engagement in the classrooms and well as one on one help with your teachers if needed. Teachers are always there to help any students if they need it and they make it well known.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Since I have been a freshman at UNCP, they always have the best homecoming week with many activities and event leading up to the footall game. I always look forward to this week.

    Bang for the buck

Even though UNCP as a fairly low tuition, you would not think you pay as much as you did for the education you are getting. I am extremely satisfied with the amount I pay and the education I receive for it.

    What to do for fun

UNCP is in a very rural area but they does not mean you can not have fun. The university is always having fun events for the students that are very interesting and fun. If you are a student here and say you are bored then you are not getting involved in the many activities they have.

    Food and Dining

My first year at UNCP the cafeteria was alright and not to pleasing. But the start of my sophomore year, they remolded the caf and it looks stunning along with better variety and better quality of food.

    Dorm Life

I am currently an residential adviser for one of the dorms at UNCP. The dorm life will really give you the experience and opportunities you will love as a college student.

    Academic Rigor

The academic challenges you face at Pembroke are worth the time. They challenge you with the intend that it will help you and it truly does. If i was not pushed and motivated by my teachers and school work, I would not be as educated and strong as I am as of now.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking about applying to this University then I would follow through with it. You get a excellent education.

    In three sentences

UNCP was not my first choice but I absolutely love it. Pembroke is a very great school that is willing to help you to the best of their abilities. With the small campus and classes, you get so much engagement with the teachers and students and that is what makes the experience of education the best.

    Campus Safety

Its has one of the highest safety rates out of all the sixteen schools within the UNC program. Most incidents that happen here are easily avoidable.

    Greek Life

UNC at Pembroke has a large number of Fraternities and sororities. When I first applied here I didn't think it would have as many as it did.

Great for these types of students

UNC at Pembroke is good for students who like to be involved with things going on at school. I am a freshmen and all of my upperclassmen friends are involved in setting up events throughout the campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year there is a Native American Pow Wow, my friend is a Lumbee Indian she told me the food is great there. I plan on going to the one this year.

    What to do for fun

The University Center or as we call the UC is usually always having something going on whether its a speaker, singer, comedian. The Givens Performing Arts Center has great musicals and shows there throughout the year as well.

    Food and Dining

The food better than most, just do not get in the habit of eating the same thing everyday. The breakfast is especially good.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life all depends on the Hall you get assigned to. UNC at Pembroke offer newer facilities as well as older ones. Its a smaller campus so if your a nice person there is a chance of knowing everyone on your building.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the professor you get, your classes won't be that tough especially if you have an interest in that particular subject. However, some professors like to challenge their students, but the harder the student is willing to work the greater the reward.

    Tips for prospective students

For a better experience get more involved in clubs and extracurricular activites such as A.C.E.

    Campus Safety

My parents and I both agree UNCP has the cleanest and safest campus we visited during my selection process. The security is hands on and ready to assist you with your concerns/needs. They offer free engraving for your items, including bicycles, for added security. The walkways are well-lit and students watch out for one another.

    Greek Life

UNCP has an active Greek Life.

    Clubs and Activities

UNCP has a lot of interesting clubs and activities. The campus has a performing arts center that hosts many plays, speakers, musicals and concerts throughout the year - and its all within walking distance!

Great for these types of students

UNCP is a good option for students who want a small scale setting. The introverts have their peace and controlled atmosphere and those more outgoing and adventurous can always find a group, club or gathering to socialize. If you are used to your high school teacher assisting you with projects, knowing you by name, etc. - UNCP is the right school. I've grown to respect all my professors at UNCP because they took the time to know me individually. That says a lot.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Sporting events are fun. The university also has a large indoor swimming pool and fitness center.

    Bang for the buck

The bookstore is very helpful and offers book buybacks toward the end of each semester. You can receive a list of the ISBN for your textbooks and research options of textbook rental from online sites as well: half.com. I have used both services during my years at UNCP.

    What to do for fun

Pembroke is a small town. Most entertainment is sought out in local towns like Lumberton or Fayetteville. You're only 1.5 hours from Myrtle Beach, SC, so that's a plus!

    Food and Dining

The food at UNCP is great. You'll go home to visit and feel like your family's refrigerator has NOTHING once you experience the dining hall food choices available. Surrounding restaurants and a Starbucks on campus are an added plus. Your Braves Card will get you discounts at local restaurants too.

    Dorm Life

The dorms tend to be overcrowded. UNCP has several apartment options located around the campus - managed by the school and other management companies.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are nice due to the smaller size. Research the professors and read their online reviews. Read campus publications and website information posted for the past 2 years and see which professors stand out. Join chat groups through social media and ask other UNCP students for advice and recommendations.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus before you decide to apply. Schedule a tour with student services and allow them to show you the campus and your options in full. Come prepared. Bring a list of questions with you and notes you have made on other colleges/universities. Having a notebook just to compare colleges/universities is the best tool. You can use it as your own personal journal for thoughts, information, questions and contacts at each school. Searching for the right school can be overwhelming. You won't remember details about every campus. The notebook will be your best friend during your decision making!

    In three sentences

UNCP is a great option if you prefer class sizes on a smaller scale than the larger universities. There are plenty of extracurricular activities, sports and clubs for you to get involved. The faculty and staff get to know you by name, rather than student id.

    Campus Safety

Our campus safety is excellent, we receive emails whenever we are in danger, or if there is bad weather coming our way.

    Clubs and Activities

I have been apart of an organization called ACE, which provides the campus with different activities to do throughout each week.

Great for these types of students

Our school is a very diverse university, accepting all race and nationalities.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Some of the unsual traditions would have to do with the Lumbee traditions. Being that our university is located in a indian community we see a lot of different traditions they have throughout the year. For instance, the Lumbees have a homecoming for all of those who are in their tribe every year, welcoming them home.

    What to do for fun

Things we do for fun at Pembroke is participating in different organizations, as well as intramural teams they have on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for prospective students is to stay focused and organized.

    In three sentences

I think Pembroke is a great school with small classroom learning. This makes it so that the students can have a one on one relationship with their professor. By having these small classroom settings it makes it easier for students to learn and understand the material at hand.

    Campus Safety

The Campus Safety is pretty good here. The police are always driving by during the day and night and their are several emergency call boxes located throughout the campus. The police are normally helpful if you need help with something too.

    Greek Life

You are aware of who is Greek and who is not here at UNCP but most of the Greek life is pretty friendly and easy to get along with. There are several different Greeks on campus and the campus is constantly adding more.

    Clubs and Activities

For a small campus there are plenty of clubs and activities to join. For most majors there is a club that helps students get to know their professors and their peers and learn more about career options available to them. The campus also holds several movie nights and ice cream socials and other social events throughout the semester. During the Spring Semester there are several activities to do during Spring Fling Week, including Pig pickin's and fun races. GPAC also hosts several performances and plays throughout the year including step shows and comedy shows. However, It is up to the student to take advantage of these clubs and activities to make the most of their college experience

Great for these types of students

Students who are serious about their education, love being involved and meeting new people, students who know how to make the best of any situation they are in, students who are looking for a cheap school to go to while still getting a good education. Students who do not give up easily.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The town of Pembroke sometimes host Powwows and other festivities through out the year. There is also a tradition called Pembroke Day where several stores and organizations throughout Pembroke and UNCP gather on the campus and sell products and inform students and the community about their organizations.

    Bang for the buck

UNCP is one of cheapest schools in the county and it still offers quality education. It is worth the amount of money you will spend and if you can work during the summer and save up you will probably be able to afford to come here all four years.

    What to do for fun

There is not much to do for fun in the city surrounding the campus. Many students also go home during the weekends so sometimes the campus is dead. If you are on campus during the weekend you are probably going to have to drive to Lumberton or Fayetteville to have fun. Getting involved in campus activities and attending campus events, performances in GPAC and sports games are normally good sources of fun during the week. You can also go to the gym or play basketball. If you do not have the option of leaving town during the weekends you can always call up friends and have movie nights or game nights. Sometimes you just have to make your own fun!

    Food and Dining

The food here is very hit or miss. During the week the sandwich bar, pizza bar and the chef line are always open during lunch and dinner and they normally serve good food. The cafe also has fried chicken Wednesdays sometimes. The desserts are also good especially the cookies. The lines are usually not too long and you can get seconds for most of the food. However sometimes the cafe serves weird food and some days the only thing that is good to eat is the pizza. On the plus side the cafe is being renovated this summer once finished will have more places to eat and more room to sit. If you are on a meal plan you also get money for the campus food places like bert's the smoothie shop and starbucks.

    Dorm Life

The dorms here a pretty nice in particular Oak, Pine and Cypress. The rooms look fairly brand new and in Oak and Pine if you have a pretty nice sized bathroom that you only have to share with 3 other people. Housing and Residence life also puts on fun activities in each of the dorms throughout the semester including movie nights and ice cream parties. The negative side to housing is that Cypress Hall is located at the end of the campus and it can be annoying to have to walk from Cypress to the cafe or to class everyday. Other than that campus housing is pretty good here just try to stay in either Pine, Oak or Cypress. Village Apartments are also a good option.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are hard and some classes are easy it all depends on the professor. However, if you pay attention in your classes and do your assignments you will end up learning a lot in each class you choose to take.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is located in an extremely small town and a student from a larger town may not like it hear to much so it is best to tour this college prior to attending if you are from a big city.

    In three sentences

This school is affordable and provides quality education. The class sizes are small, the people are friendly and the campus atmosphere is very calm and relaxed. Your time here at UNCP will be what you make of it!

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is great at this university. They are always patrolling areas of the campus day and night. Anytime there is an incident that warrants the students being informed, we get text and email notifications. I feel very good about safety on this campus.

    Greek Life

I don't know much other than there are fraternities and sororities on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a wealth of clubs and activities on campus, more than enough for all students to participate in more than one club and activities. There are history clubs, commuity development clubs, career advancemant clubs, and more.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for any type of student but I think it has especially good programs that target the nontraditional and older student. They have started programs just for these population. That is what drew me to The University of North Carolina Pembroke.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

This school has the tradition of honoring the Native American heritage and roots of the Pembroke community. The university honors the city of Pembroke for its beginning and connection to the univerity.

    Bang for the buck

This school is one of the top schools of its kind for the price.

    What to do for fun

There are many fun activities and events held on campus for on campus and off campus students. The university has the best community fun day that I have ever experienced anywhere and it is all free. Great activities that you could get nowhere for free. They have the best seminar series, concerts and plays as well. This helps to build the student up holistically. The university also provides many other fun events such as give-aways, food, and social gatherings on campus.

    Food and Dining

I don't stay on campus and have never experienced the food or dining, but heard it is great.

    Dorm Life

I have never stayed in a dorm, but have heard that it is great living.

    Academic Rigor

    This would be 5 stars.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest that students work according to their own pace and current situations. I would also suggest lots of communication with advisors and professors.

    In three sentences

I think that this university is superb. It is top-notch in its handling of students, curriculum and staff. I recommend this university to all who will listen and will continue to do so.

    Campus Safety

I really do not feel safe on campus what-so-ever. Last semester, several students were robbed at gun point prior to Winter break. The campus police do not seem to be involved in protecting students nor do they go out of the way to help students too often.

    What to do for fun

In order to have fun, I must drive to neighboring cities such as, Lumberton and Fayetteville. Most of the time I just study to pass the time.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is the horrible here. There were several times that I recieve undercooked food. There is not a wide variety of food selection either.

    Dorm Life

The Dorm life is rather disappointing because so many of the residents are loud at night which makes it difficult to sleep. The only positive to dorm life is meeting new people everyday.

    Academic Rigor

Since UNCP is a small univeristy, most instructors will go out of their way to help students achieve. Instructors will do one on one tutoring with struggling students. There is also a great academic tutoring service provided by the student life with allows students to be tutored by fellow peers.

    In three sentences

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a small university found in the middle of a rural town called Pembroke. The city of Pembroke does not offer students any activities, and tends to be a city of crime. Students must go to neighboring cities to find activities of interest.

    Campus Safety

there are cameras and safety polls everywhere along with a police station on campus. But most of the time there really isn't a need for them. everyone here isn't looking for trouble and you can go out on campus at midnight and its still pretty safe, I don't recommend going anywhere alone but if you must its still safe.

    Greek Life

Lots of this going on. They aren't full of themselves like on most campuses.

    Clubs and Activities

There are lots of on campus clubs and activities but if you looking for like clubs clubs like to go out there's Marriottes i think its called. Not worth it in my opinion but lots of people go there to dance. Its stupid though save your money you will need it for something else I'm sure.

Great for these types of students

I live in Oak hall and its amazing. It's right in the middle of everything on campus. I lived in Pine before that and that place is just as good. Its fun just make an effort to get to know your hall mates as well as suite or room mates.

    Academic Rigor

Academic wise the school is just right for me. Small class sizes keep me paying more attention to the subject. The work isn't hard as long as you apply yourself or at least make some effort to study but mostly if you pay attention in class that's all you need.

    Tips for prospective students

Oak and Pine hall are the best dorms to live in they are the nicest and closest to everything. Don't room with your best friend it never works out. Don't take everything on the list for what you need in a dorm. half of it you wont use and its a pain to pack it all up and move again. Be social get out there and meet new people. Everyone is super nice.

Most people eat at the on campus meal bar, which has great salads, burgers, subs, and the infamous philly cheesesteak. It gets expenisve though.

    Dorm Life

UNCP is in a massive growing faze right now. Dorm life is at its peak. We recently finished construction on a modern and spacious co-ed dorm. A dorm with no curfew or visitation restrictions! It might seem crazy to some, but these rights aren't abused. It actually makes students feel like adults in their own apartments. The rest of campus is a little dated, but rooms are nice nonetheless. It is cheaper to stay off campus though. Financial aid can be used on the college apartments too. All of them are less than a mile away so you still feel like you are staying on campus.

    Academic Rigor

If you look on the UNCP website you will find out motto, Where learning gets personal. Our motto is completely true. UNCP offers small class sizes and teachers who are passionate about teaching and the subjects they teach. In my opinion, the intimacy of the learning environment makes it so much easier to understand otherwise complicated concepts.

    Tips for prospective students

Pembroke isnt the most competitive or expensive school to get into because it is so small. Once you get in, just get involved. UNC Pembroke is a place for students to take action. Many students start their own little organizationsand faculty is really supportive in this. If UNCP doesnt have your hobby interest satisfied, you can easily start it yourself!

    In three sentences

Located in the heart of an isolated Indian reservation, UNC Pembroke immerses you in rich culture and offers one a peaceful, laidback place to earn a degree. You wont find the fast pace environment of a large city. The rural location allows students to create and administer their own entertainment on a more intimate level with their peers.

Many varsity and intramural sports. Again, many clubs and activities for everyone. You can also create your own intramural sport or club.

Great for these types of students

This school is a great choice for students that are seeking a challenging and great education at an affordable cost.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition only about $3,000 a year, which is very affordable compared to other UNC system schools. For example, ECU tuition is about $18,000 a year compared to UNCP, $3,000. Both schools offer a great education and college experience.

    What to do for fun

Bowling, local parties, arcade, pool and the fitness center are all the local fun things to do. Take a 15 minute ride to Lumberton to go to the movies, clubs, more bowling and more restaurants. Take a 40 minute drive to Fayetteville, near Fort Bragg, to open up to a very wide variety of fun things to do!

    Food and Dining

Not many meal halls or places to eat. Plus side, though, the main dining hall is being renovated and will have a restaurant style. I think the food is the same nationwide. Wide variety of places to eat besides dining hall.

    Dorm Life

The dorms, from what I've seen, look amazing. Compared to other dorms I've seen, they are pretty nice. Large, spacious and very accommodating. The apartments around campus are even nicer and larger and very affordable.

    Academic Rigor

UNCP is in the UNC system and is one of the best and most affordable schools is this system. The classes are challenging and keep you on your toes. Although, challenging, the classes are not too rigorous and you will learn quite a lot.

    Tips for prospective students

Search for scholarships early. Apply to many schools and leave all opportunities open. Apply to your top schools early and have a backup school to fall back on.

    In three sentences

UNCP is my local college and my backup school but it's still a great university to earn my degree. The affordability of this college doesn't reflect a bad school, but a university that wants to offer a great education to everyone. I'm proud to be a Brave!

    What to do for fun

Although Pembroke is in the middle of nowhere there is a lot of things to do both on and off campus. First and foremost, it's all in who you meet and become friends with. Considering I am a church going student, majority of my friends were church goers as well. I traveled to other cities near by and my friends and I would go out to eat. I also joined organizations. I am on the V.O.S Gospel choir in which we sing songs and go to various church programs and sing. I joined an on campus church ministry as well. On campus we have an inside swimming pool. We also have a game room. In the game room, we have a bowling alley, pool hall, and ping pong tables. There is also organizations that plans and throw other student events.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining was pretty good as well. Around campus we had the choices of Burger King, KFC, McDonald's, and other restaurants. On campus we had Starbucks, Papa John's, Einstein Bagel, and we also had Bert's. I enjoyed the food service.

    Dorm Life

The residence life is amazing! Meeting new people on your floor yet alone in your building is awesome. Staying in a co-ed dorm was an experience. The RA's were awesome!! It felt almost as if we all were on big happy family.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are what you make them. It is very possible to maintain all A's but it's all up to you. If you stay focused, don't procrastinate, go to study sessions(study groups), and meet with professors you will do well academically.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in with your priorities and goals set. You will meet a lot of people, but with meeting a lot of people, there is a lot of distractions to go along with it. Also, don't lose sight of who you are as an individual. Stay true to yourself.

    In three sentences

UNCP is the best UNC school there is! The community is amazing and filled with genuine people. The professors are always there and they open up their schedules to fit around yours for assistance if needed.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is decent. More officers patrolling at night would be better, because crimes occur every now and then; most of them being after hours. One upside is that they are quick to respond, based on my experience.

    Greek Life

As a member of a Greek Organization, i can say that Greek life is a great part of the college life, and is something everyone should at least look into, or consider. Now, it isnt for everyone of course, and it does cost a little extra money, but the bonds and networking opportunities are endless, and it can really change your life.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs available to suit any interest a student may have. Ranging from art and theater, to math and science. There is something for everyone.

Great for these types of students

People who like small classroom settings will love this school. Ive had a few classes with only 10 or so students, so you get more personal with your professor, and more help/attention.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Theres nothing really. The campus isnt really big. I can walk across campus in about 10-15 minutes. Off- campus, there isnt much either.

    Bang for the buck

It is a very cheap/inexpensive University. Its the cheapest in-state, if im not mistaken. I pay roughly 2400 per semester, as a commuter and still get the full college effect, with the exception of the dorm life. (Which is something Im not missing out on, from what Ive heard and experienced)

    What to do for fun

The University has entertainment events that go on throughout the week, that somewhat make up for the lack of places of interest in the surrounding area. Other than campus entertainment, there is Wal-mart, and a club. Otherwise, you need to drive to Lumberton or Fayetteville for fun.

    Food and Dining

As a commuter, I dont mind the dining facilities as much as the residents but thats because I dont eat there very often. The cafeteria is buffet style, so there is many choices, although I tend to hear people still complain about the lack of variety. The only problem I have is the expense of entry into the cafe. Breakfast is cheap, lunch is a bit pricey, and dinner is way overboard. Its roughly $8 for dinner.

    Dorm Life

    I prefer to commute.

    Academic Rigor

Easy professors for the most part. The math professors are all bad from my experience, but other than that I've had great instructors.

    Tips for prospective students

Great university, but be warned: the area around it is noting but country. So if you don't have a car to drive to nearby cities such as Lumberton or Fayetteville, you may not enjoy living there as much because the only thing the city of Pembroke has going for it is the University, and Wal-Mart. But on an academic note, most of the professors are good and want you to pass. So they're not very difficult.

    In three sentences

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has clean facilities, great academic programs, and opportunities. Most of the professors are very helpful based on my experience, not saying there aren't a few bad eggs. Overall, it is a great university to attend, with a friendly atmosphere.

    Campus Safety

Cops are always on duty and ride around campus on bikes as well as in cars. The police station, located in the middle of campus, is open 24 hours. There are also emergency call boxes scattered throughout campus that flash blue lights when pressed.

    Greek Life

Greeks are very involved throughout campus. Each fraternity and sorority has an issue that they all focus on, such as breast cancer awareness, helping the homeless, helping St. Jude's hospital, environmental clean up, and community revival (building and rebuilding in the surrounding area).

    Clubs and Activities

Many of the student organizations hold a great amount of campus wide activities to get people involved on campus. Intramural sports and club teams are also a big part of campus, as we have flag football, swimming, soccer, basketball, beach wrestling, and the list goes on.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for any type of student.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I haven't witnessed any unusual traditions or locations on campus as of yet.

    Bang for the buck

UNCP is the one of the cheapest public universities. It offers an array of majors, sports, clubs, and activities to participate in. Plus, the Lumbee culture on and surrounding campus is intriguing.

    What to do for fun

There's numerous activities to do for fun. There's an indoor pool, an indoor and outdoor basketball court, an intramural field used for soccer, football, softball, etc., a game room, a bowling alley, and plenty other organization led activities spread out during the course of a week. Activities we've held up to date include a glow party, a glow in the dark scavenger hunt, a talent show, a battle of the residence halls, and there's a staff vs. students kickball game coming soon.

    Food and Dining

In my opinion, UNCP has one of the best dining facilities. It runs smoothly and has an array of choices to choose from. There's a to-go line, a dessert bar, a hamburger and fry line, a salad bar, a sandwich/wrap line, a hot bar where full course meals are provided, and also a line where the chef makes the specialty dish in front of you. The staff is friendly and it's very well maintained, as the staff walks around and cleans approximately every 15-30 minutes. We also have a Starbucks, Papa John's, World of Wings, Sub Connection, and Einstein's Bagels on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorm I reside in (Cypress) is clean, well-kept, and contains Resident Advisers who care about what's going on throughout the dorm. It's very diverse and integrated. Activities are provided to get to know more people and spend time together.

    Academic Rigor

The courses provided will make you work. No class is too hard to where it's impossible for a majority of people to fail the class. However, college is a completely different ballpark than high school. If you come to college and don't study, it's highly likely a passing grade won't be in your future.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Don't space your classes out. Try to knock them all out as soon as possible because the more time between classes, the easier it is to 1) lose track of time and 2) get lazy and not want to go to class. - It's not necessary to invest in a bike, although it does help. You can make it anywhere on campus in under 15 minutes walking. - Complete your FAFSA! Financial aid goes a long way in college. Especially when it's time for refund checks. - Save money.

    In three sentences

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a beautiful campus filled with a diverse student body. It's a relatively small campus, making it easier to get to know your peers, get to know your professors, and make it easier to get to classes. Also, there are many different clubs and organizations to provide new opportunities to incoming and current students.

    What to do for fun

I hang out with my friends for fun, whether it's getting movies from the library and having a movie night all night long on Friday and Saturday nights or just going to dinner together, or going to the gym or just hanging out. I would recommend getting involved with campus organizations to keep yourself busy. Do whatever you can to have fun. Make your college experience what you want it to be. That's what you have to do here at Pembroke or else you won't like it here, because of it's location.

    Food and Dining

The food in the caf© will get boring to you after a while, so plan to spend your college bucks that are loaded on your id. The food is good for a while and then you get sick of it, so utilize the on campus restaurants like Papa John's or Bert's caf©. Even go to taco bell by the Walmart; you get a student discount there. There are healthy choices in the caf©, like salads and wraps and soup just in case you don't want anything junky. One thing I will say is that on the weekends they should have more choices.

    Dorm Life

I like my dorm mostly because I have friends on this floor. But, I like living in my dorm, because it's a residential style and I feel like I can come back and relax in between classes. It does get a little noisy because the walls and ceilings are not as thick as you would like them to be, but I like where I live.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are challenging and time consuming, so I would recommend taking a couple of AP classes throughout your high school career and passing the exams to exempt some classes. As for my major, I'm getting the most out of it. I'm being challenged and I am working hard to improve at what I do.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely visit before you come here to make sure you don't mind the small town atmosphere. Invest in a car if you don't already have one, because you're going to want to get off campus.

    In three sentences

There are parties pretty much every weekend (**Drink Responsibly!!**)

    Food and Dining

The Cafeteria food is gross and repetitive. they have the same thing everyday. Berts (our on campus cafe) is disgusting. their food just is not good at all. Papa johns is the only decent place to eat on campus.

    Dorm Life

The food and dining here are pretty good. The Campus dining hall offers a plethora of foods and if the dining hall is not for you then other dining places are offered on and around campus.

    Dorm Life

Even though I currently reside off-campus the dorm life was great. The rooms here are so much larger than any other campus that i have visited.

    Academic Rigor

If you apply yourself and stay on top of things you shouldn't have much of a problem. As long as you're responsible and concentrate on your classes then it should be a breeze. The classes are flat out layer out and all you need to do is follow. The class size is smaller and you get a more personal connection with your professors.

    Food and Dining

There are not that many food options on the UNCP campus. There is the main cafeteria, Bert's cafe, Papa Johns, and Starbucks. The food is okay, but could be better.

    Dorm Life

There are four residential dorms and three campus apartments. The facilities are nice and are all centrally located so it is easy to get to class. The rooms are large and the facilities are clean.

    Academic Rigor

The classes at UNCP are challenging, but in most cases if the student does the work and goes to class they will pass. The professors are more than willing to help any one with questions and they have open office hours. The Honor's College offers special course for their students that offers more academic challenges.

    Tips for prospective students

Students who attend UNCP should be aware that the town of Pembroke is small, and there is not much to do. If they are looking for a large campus this is not the place to attend. But the people are friendly and there are many things to get involved with on campus.

    In three sentences

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is an affordable and small school. The campus is very diverse and the school doesn't discriminate. The class size is small, so the student can get one on one attention from the teacher.

    Campus Safety

I feel safe here. Yes, things happen sometimes on campus so it's important to exercise safety precautions on your own. Most of the time, anything that happens involves people who don't attend the school. The campus security handles it promptly and swiftly.

    Greek Life

    I didn't do the Greek!

    Clubs and Activities

Like I said before, there are so many clubs and activities to be involved with here. Personally, I was involved with an art club, a Christian club (BCM), and other volunteer opportunities.

Great for these types of students

Commuter, students not growing a money tree in their backyard, and students looking for a more personal classroom experience (since the classroom sizes are generally small).

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I don't know of any unusual traditions or locations on campus really. There is a church across the street though, so that's worth noting if that's important to you. I love the church family there and the youth pastor in charge of college night is amazing!

    Bang for the buck

Pembroke, when compared to other schools, is a great price for a great education. You don't have to go broke to get a good education!

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of clubs, organizations, and volunteer opportunities to keep anyone busy. The Given's Performing Art Center is also on campus and they have plays and performances there all the time that people actually come out of town to see! Most of the time it can be free for students too! I'm not going to lie though, if you want to go off of campus for fun you're either going to have to travel to Fayetteville or Lumberton. Be wary of the dangers of both towns. Crime rates are high in both so don't go running around at night obviously. So long as you're aware of this though, it is possible to have safe fun there so don't stress!

    Food and Dining

When I first came to Pembroke in 2011, the cafeteria food was tolerable. Now (2014), the cafeteria food is MUCH better! They've made some serious overhauls and it's actually delicious. There are also other options for food nearby in the same building, but be prepared to pay a little more for the convenience.

    Dorm Life

I can't say much about dorm life because for the one semester I did live on campus I stayed in the Village Apartments (which are a part of campus). I had more freedom than someone who stayed in an actual dorm. It was nice and my roommate became one of my closest friends. I enjoyed only having to share a bathroom with her. The downsides are of course the other people around you. Occasionally we dealt with loud music and pot heads. Any problems you have are very willingly dealt with by your RA though, so you always have someone who cares about your well-being. Overall, I loved my experience.

    Academic Rigor

I rate this category with 4 stars because the rigor is higher in more specialized classes. The general education classes, like Math or English, are really easy. Pembroke takes their education seriously though so don't expect an easy ride!

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for prospective students would have to be to take your studies seriously, get involved on and off campus, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. The pressure to not go to class because there are better things to do is great and if you're not taking your studies seriously then you can spend your entire college career just trying to fix the grades you gave yourself in the beginning. Save yourself the struggle later and go to class!

    In three sentences

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is affordable, diverse, and a wonderful opportunity. It provides students with a unique experience by exposing them to a variety of people and allowing them to learn respect for different cultures, races, and beliefs. The environment is very friendly and there's something for everyone here!

    What to do for fun

There are always activities going on, i.e. sport games, block party, Relay for Life, Carnival night, etc.

    Food and Dining

Dining is not the best. Luckily there are restaurants near campus that you can choose from.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is pretty great. Depending on where you live, people are generally really friendly.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major and the classes you take, most classes are average classes and not too difficult. It's almost impossible to fail the class if you do what you are supposed to.

    Tips for prospective students

You might want to visit first.

    In three sentences

UNCP is a great school for students who want small class sizes and professors who care about your grades. Although it is in the middle of nowhere, if you have a car, you'll be fine. It's great for students who want to do well in college because it offers tons of help.
