Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you'd like to visit another country but still want your beloved McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. Anyone of hispanic origin or that speaks spanish (or at least understands pretty well). If you like to party, Puerto Rico is perfect for you. By the way, the drinking age in Puerto Rico is 18!
Tips for prospective students Study spanish, keep an open mind (remember the culture difference), be outgoing!
Bang for the buck Definitely worth it! You get the same quality education as in the states except you're paying so much less! The current rates are $49/credit (in-state) and about $3,000 a year for out of state! (and yes, it's a fully accredited state school!) Also if you are a dependent of a military personnel you get a 50% discount.
Am enjoying being here The college atmosphere here is great but it's a bit different from the states in terms of the social clubs/organizations. Some are better, some worse but for the most part it's a great school!
Am learning a lot I am definitely learning a lot! The teachers do a good job and the classes are relatively small compared to some universities in the states. Also, I'm learning in two languages!

Categories Comments What to do for fun socialize!!!!! people is what makes life in the campus fun.
Food and Dining healthy food is very hard to find. main things are going to be fast-food restaurants, so be careful with what you eat, you do not want to end up like a bear.
Dorm Life dorm life will depend. some places are better than others. some are newer and cleaner, while others should be closed-off. you get what you want to pay, literally.
Academic Rigor university of puerto rico is one of te best universities to get a great education since the professors are more than qualified to teach. some of course may be a bit coo-koo but other than that they still make great educators. it is not easy, studying is part of the path towards achieving any type of education.
Tips for prospective students be yourself and never let anyone say any different. study hard and choose your professors wisely.
In three sentences amazing and qualified professors. huge place to meet new people whether they are from the island or from around the world. great university to study basically anything since it was the first university to ever open up to create people with education, making them change the economic and social status of puerto rico.

Dorm Life The campus offers a variety of dorms. It offers rooms at great and manageable fees. The dorms are right next or inside the campus providing comfort too students.
Academic Rigor It all depends on the subject. All college professors expect high quality work of the students.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Since the university is in a urban location there are many places you could go to have fun like: Nightclubs, restaurants, cinemas, mall, among others. And if this does not convince you can always hop on the train and get to other areas such as the Colosseum of Puerto Rico where you can enjoy concerts and other activities.
Food and Dining I gave a 5 for food and dining since there are many places to choose where to eat, and most are near the university. If you wish you can go by foot or drive.
Dorm Life I don't have any experience in this area, but the university provides apartments for students or you can also go to near apartments. But a great dorm life it's all about roommates, so if it's a Puerto Rican you will always have fun.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor depends on the faculty you belong. In my case, I belong to the Faculty of Architecture and based on the amount of work that it's given to the students I can say that the rigor is very high.
Tips for prospective students If you are attending this university is recommended that you go in comfortable shoes because you have to walk a lot. Since the university is in a wet area and the rain is very common, so always walk with an umbrella in hand.
In three sentences The University of Puerto Rico it's the best university on the Island. Provides academic offerings such as: business administration, architecture, natural sciences, social sciences, education, school of communications, general studies and humanities. It's a big campus, but also walkable.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anyone who would like to get to know Puerto Rico and take advantage of its wonders. The academic offerings are vast and the university is located at the heart of Rio Piedras, which is basically kept alive by the university community.
Tips for prospective students Be aware that you have to have a working knowledge of Spanish as almost all courses are given in that language (except English and foreign languages majors, of course). There's a decent population, however, of foreign students who study in the Natural Sciences faculty and I've noticed many of them don't know much Spanish. Still, if you want to get to know the locals, knowing Spanish definitely helps (although many Puerto Ricans in the metropolitan area DO know English).
Bang for the buck Despite the new $800 yearly special stabilization fee and that each year the cost per credit keeps rising, the UPR still offers inexpensive higher education. Cost per credit for 2012 will be somewhere around $55 per credit for undergraduates and $137 per credit for graduate students. For foreign or non-resident undergraduate students, the yearly rate is around $4,369.00 (sans the $800 yearly special fee and this is if you take the 12 credits minimum per semester to be considered a full-time student). For foreign or non-resident graduate students, the yearly fee is something like $6,371.00 (again without counting the $800 fee and as a full-time student taking a minimum of 8 credits per semester).
Am enjoying being here I love the people you meet, the extracurricular activities, the student discounts on plays, student organizations, night life, college dorms... everything!
Am learning a lot The programs are comprehensive and they prepare you really well academically. There may be one or two professors that perhaps you just won't like, mostly because of his/her attitude or perhaps because the class is just not what you were expecting it to be. At least, that's been my experience. Of course, this can vary from faculty to faculty since there's hundreds of professors at the UPR. Overall, however, I find that there's a lot you can learn at the UPR campus of Rio Piedras. The course offerings are so large... you can study anything from art, architecture, all types of sciences, math, languages, education, law, theater, music, journalism, etc.

What to do for fun There are a vast variety of activities! For example: Yoga, Sports like volley ball, basket ball, ping pong, swimming and many more; musical presentations, theater, concerts, plays and art expositions with live music at night (many of these activities are free, for the enjoyment of the student!). Most of the time i bring my own lunch, and the professors and student associations provide microwaves for reheating. There is a vast variation of places to eat from Burger King, to Sub Way, to affordable restaurants all in the area.

Both are secure, both are close (of course the one inside is closest), and both the home of many students who share interests and time. It is a challenge to be on your own, but i believe it must be a wonderful experience that will help you on your journey through life.

Everyone should take advantage of this, the professors will push you to your limits, and that will help you find new limits and grow, and expand your mind to new horizons that not even you knew. It is very satisfactory when you look back and see the immense progress you have achieved and at the same time, you will want more and more each time.
Tips for prospective students Be emotionally prepared for the pressure do to the vast amount of material given; Also I recommend comfortable clothing. The professors are greatly prepared and if you are interested, and show it, they will appreciate it and show you gratitude for it. I believe every one should take classes from as much different faculties as possible, because it provides a vast enrichment, and I believe that the more variant your knowledge, the better prepared.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is debatable because of campus location, but improvements are been made to assure student's safety across campus.
Greek Life There's no greek life as you might be expecting, but there are couple of fraternities and sororities you could be part of.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs and organizations, but they are not widely known on campus for the most. Must take the initiative to find them and be active within the student organization.
What to do for fun Main fun activities on campus consist of plays and concerts offered at low or no cost for students by the different drama and music student programs and associations. Also, University Ave. offers options for nightlife entertainment like bars and clubs.
Food and Dining There's a campus student center with fast food available and independent food carts spread around campus. Also University Ave. offers several options for food with a variety cafeterias and independent food establishments.
Dorm Life Dorms are very low cost ($160/per year), but are shared with 5 more students. Also the cost would let you know that the dorms are not in perfect shape. You must demonstrate financial need to be approved to live in these on campus dorms. There is off campus independent housing available. Also, there's a new complex (very good shape with air conditioning and 24hr security) that is private, but school bounded that rents double apartments for $220/month per person.
Academic Rigor Academic rigor is comparable to the rigor other highly recognized universities. The rigor could be considered higher considering that the school lacks of many resources (libraries, books, electronic resources, services and subscriptions) available in other universities as it is a low cost public university.
Tips for prospective students Don't be discouraged by the low quality of the administrative services. Professors are highly qualified, but must be prepared to be instructed in either of both official languages of the institution (English and mostly Spanish).
In three sentences Good quality education considering the tuition costs. If you are expecting top notch facilities you'll be disappointed. Excellent academic and cultural environment.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The university is full of things to do. It's main library is huge and has wireless internet, as well as the entire campus. Students can relax in the halls or go eat with friends. Sometimes, at the humanities faculty there are various activities like plays, artisan exposure markets and music. Students can also take a dip in the campus pool.
Food and Dining The university has in-campus fast food places like Burger King, Sbarro, Chirch's Chicken and Pollo Tropical all in an air conditioned cafeteria like establishment but the best food lies in the campus' merenderos which are four. The food is delicious and inexpensive for students. Also, outside campus are a pizza place, a mexican place and a Quiznos, among other little kiosks and businesses.
Dorm Life The university's dorms are not abundant and are very strict. There are three dorms, two outside and one inside campus. The two outside are most recommended and more abundant than the ones inside.
Academic Rigor The university's academic rigor is met with it's variety of offers at undergraduate level. The hundreds of degrees that one can obtain are directly proportional to it's rigor academically. The university is demanding, especially in humanities and the sciences but the academic labor isn't impossible, it possesses a relaxed pace but a hard working rhythm. Highly recommended.
Tips for prospective students Pospective students interested in pursuing degrees in art, natural sciences, social sciences, architecture and marketing/business will have an excellent experience with the many programs the university has to offer. The University is one of the best, if not the best, in the whole Caribbean. Social life and academics both co-exist. The Rio Piedras Campus, it's main one, is beautiful, peaceful, green and huge. It's ancient architecture is breathtaking and it's reputation is wonderful. Prospective students should consider this campus before considering others.
