Great for these types of students

If you'd like to visit another country but still want your beloved McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. Anyone of hispanic origin or that speaks spanish (or at least understands pretty well). If you like to party, Puerto Rico is perfect for you. By the way, the drinking age in Puerto Rico is 18!

    Tips for prospective students

Study spanish, keep an open mind (remember the culture difference), be outgoing!

    Bang for the buck

Definitely worth it! You get the same quality education as in the states except you're paying so much less! The current rates are $49/credit (in-state) and about $3,000 a year for out of state! (and yes, it's a fully accredited state school!) Also if you are a dependent of a military personnel you get a 50% discount.

    Am enjoying being here

The college atmosphere here is great but it's a bit different from the states in terms of the social clubs/organizations. Some are better, some worse but for the most part it's a great school!

    Am learning a lot

I am definitely learning a lot! The teachers do a good job and the classes are relatively small compared to some universities in the states. Also, I'm learning in two languages!

    Food and Dining

    Academic Rigor

university of puerto rico is one of te best universities to get a great education since the professors are more than qualified to teach. some of course may be a bit coo-koo but other than that they still make great educators. it is not easy, studying is part of the path towards achieving any type of education.

    What to do for fun

Since the university is in a urban location there are many places you could go to have fun like: Nightclubs, restaurants, cinemas, mall, among others. And if this does not convince you can always hop on the train and get to other areas such as the Colosseum of Puerto Rico where you can enjoy concerts and other activities.

    Food and Dining

I gave a 5 for food and dining since there are many places to choose where to eat, and most are near the university. If you wish you can go by foot or drive.

    Dorm Life

I don't have any experience in this area, but the university provides apartments for students or you can also go to near apartments. But a great dorm life it's all about roommates, so if it's a Puerto Rican you will always have fun.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor depends on the faculty you belong. In my case, I belong to the Faculty of Architecture and based on the amount of work that it's given to the students I can say that the rigor is very high.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are attending this university is recommended that you go in comfortable shoes because you have to walk a lot. Since the university is in a wet area and the rain is very common, so always walk with an umbrella in hand.

    In three sentences

The University of Puerto Rico it's the best university on the Island. Provides academic offerings such as: business administration, architecture, natural sciences, social sciences, education, school of communications, general studies and humanities. It's a big campus, but also walkable.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who would like to get to know Puerto Rico and take advantage of its wonders. The academic offerings are vast and the university is located at the heart of Rio Piedras, which is basically kept alive by the university community.

    Tips for prospective students

Be aware that you have to have a working knowledge of Spanish as almost all courses are given in that language (except English and foreign languages majors, of course). There's a decent population, however, of foreign students who study in the Natural Sciences faculty and I've noticed many of them don't know much Spanish. Still, if you want to get to know the locals, knowing Spanish definitely helps (although many Puerto Ricans in the metropolitan area DO know English).

    Bang for the buck

Despite the new $800 yearly special stabilization fee and that each year the cost per credit keeps rising, the UPR still offers inexpensive higher education. Cost per credit for 2012 will be somewhere around $55 per credit for undergraduates and $137 per credit for graduate students. For foreign or non-resident undergraduate students, the yearly rate is around $4,369.00 (sans the $800 yearly special fee and this is if you take the 12 credits minimum per semester to be considered a full-time student). For foreign or non-resident graduate students, the yearly fee is something like $6,371.00 (again without counting the $800 fee and as a full-time student taking a minimum of 8 credits per semester).

    Am enjoying being here

I love the people you meet, the extracurricular activities, the student discounts on plays, student organizations, night life, college dorms... everything!

    Am learning a lot

The programs are comprehensive and they prepare you really well academically. There may be one or two professors that perhaps you just won't like, mostly because of his/her attitude or perhaps because the class is just not what you were expecting it to be. At least, that's been my experience. Of course, this can vary from faculty to faculty since there's hundreds of professors at the UPR. Overall, however, I find that there's a lot you can learn at the UPR campus of Rio Piedras. The course offerings are so large... you can study anything from art, architecture, all types of sciences, math, languages, education, law, theater, music, journalism, etc.

Also, there's a new complex (very good shape with air conditioning and 24hr security) that is private, but school bounded that rents double apartments for $220/month per person.

Don't be discouraged by the low quality of the administrative services. Professors are highly qualified, but must be prepared to be instructed in either of both official languages of the institution (English and mostly Spanish).

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is a joke. I've only seen one campus officer this whole semester and in the same spot he never moves from the main entrance. There are theft and sexual assault reports emailed daily to students and most of them occur during broad daylight. Definitely walk with caution around campus and stay in crowded areas. At night, walk in pairs or very large groups. Most people have tasers or pepper spray just in case.

    Greek Life

There is no greek life here.

Great for these types of students

It's a rather diverse campus so if you don't mind this then you'll fit right in. Also the avenue where parties are usually held is a bit far from most dorms which can be convenient for most. Ultimately, you have to be strong, independent and outgoing to survive such a big campus.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is definitely rising but it is more affordable than most so I can't complain. Although for the amount we pay they should renovate some of its departments and invest in campus security.

    What to do for fun

If there's one thing the university lacks is the ability to promote activities. I never know what's going to happen unless I walk right into it. But you can always take the train into any of the stops and walk around, shop, dine or sight-see. The train station is right on campus so it's easy to move around.

    Food and Dining

There's a central building most locals ignore in the center of campus that has a Sbarro, Burger King, Church's and Pollo Tropical. Off-campus you might find more alternatives such as Quizno's, Pasta Mobile, a Mexican Restaurant, a Natural/Organic cart, etc. Also, some departments do have their own cafes that sell sandwiches, soups, salads and local cuisine.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life around here sucks too much. If you're lucky to get the newly constructed dorms then you'll be fine. But as it is on a limited availability, you might get stuck living on the other residencies and off-campus apartments that leave much to be desired. The only positive outlook is that they are close to campus. Other than that, all of them are run-down and battered, lack many resources, and lack any kind of security.

    Academic Rigor

It is very competent, full of professors on a doctorate level willing to make time for their students. Classes can be manageable just don't leave anything to the last minute because it will pile up and you will suffer.

    Tips for prospective students

Really search to see if such a big campus is right for you and if your major is worth it. Since it's a big school, there's no room for hand-holding therefore you will be on your own all the time. My advice is to put yourself out there, ask around and talk to anybody that you can. Most people are easily approachable and willing to converse with anybody. Also whenever you deal with administrative stuff keep an open mind and relax, all of the staff working in the offices are insufferable and will likely make it difficult for you but as long as you are determined you will make it. This goes for the system you use to register for classes as well. Really just get to know the campus, walk around, ask if you have questions and keep an open mind.

    In three sentences

The University of Puerto Rico is the most affordable state school I've yet to encounter. It offers a variety of programs and has unlimited resources to succeed in your intended major. Its wide open campus and school spirit will no doubt make you feel like you're finally a part of something.

    Campus Safety

It has been safe for the majority of time, but I wouldn't suggest leaving your laptop at the desk of the library if you go to the bathroom. Last year there were two reports of stolen cars at the parking. Besides that, you always need to be careful, but specially outside campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Being a really festive kind of people, we celebrate everything. Is not hard to see people dressing in costumes for Halloween, or a lot of heart balloons in Valentine's Day. Also, there are different activities in all faculties, which makes every day a little more interesting.

    What to do for fun

There are many student associations and different activities to do at night. Thursday nights are to be spent in the Avenida which is the street in front of the university and it has different pubs to drink and dance. There is also another street nearby for all those salsa dancers.

    Food and Dining

The university has different places to eat. There is the Centro de Estudiantes, which has Burger King, Church's Chicken and Pollo Tropical. Other places has more Puerto Rican food. Nearby places offer a different variety.

    Dorm Life

It has two different dorms, one private and one of the campus. The campus one is really cheap and the private one is not that expensive, but it has A/C. The campus dorms do not have A/C, except at study rooms or computer rooms.

    Academic Rigor

It has a really good standing. I can talk about the Natural Science faculty which is excellent.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're looking for a place where you can have it all, it's here. Many students start a degree and end up doing a bachelor's degree with two majors. It has a great environment for the likes of everyone. If you prefer places with little population, well this is not the place. In comparison with some USA colleges you might find that this campus is small, but really diverse. Everyone is well received and every semester there are a lot of exchange students from all parts of the world. The cons are that the courses are limited in quantity and space, which is hard sometimes to find the courses you would like to take, and the other thing is that most of the courses are in Spanish, so if you are not very good at it, you will see yourself struggling with the language.

    In three sentences

It's been my best experience so far. The University is really diverse, is the biggest one in Puerto Rico, and it offers a great curriculum in different areas of studies for the interest of everyone. It has the best research opportunities for undergraduate students at all faculties in a really competitive environment.
