Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those who want to pursue a career in music, who love small campuses, and those who want to be part of a crazy fan base.
Tips for prospective students Buy your books after classes start if you can; some classes use different books than listed, or just wont use them. Attend the football games, FNATF, and Eagle Walk before the game starts. You don't want to miss out on the excitement.
Bang for the buck It's a tad expensive if you're not a Mississippi resident or didn't get the out of state fee wavered. But it's worth it no matter how expensive it can be.
Am enjoying being here One of the best things about this school is the students. There is always something going on, especially around game time. Friday Night At the Fountain (FNATF) is one of the best. Golden Eagle Welcome Week (GEWW) is another that is focused on freshmen and transfer students to help the transition to Southern Miss great; you also get to paint the Eagle Walk. But other than that, the students are nice and someone is always willing to help if you need it.
Am learning a lot The Professors here are really dedicated to making sure the students understand the material. The classes are fun and easy to get to.

Tips for prospective students Find an advisor early. They will be able to direct you to the path that is best for you and want the best for you. Also, make sure to take Research Methods as most students go into university without proper writing skills.
Bang for the buck For what the university charges for tuition, the students receive the maximum benefit. Just wished the books were not so expensive.
Am enjoying being here I am really enjoying the univeristy and the city. The campus at univeristy is easily accessable and and the departments are very helpful. There's much to do in Hattiesburg for a variety of tastes.
Am learning a lot I am a student majoring in history with a focus on European History. I find my professors to be well prepared and able and willing to help students to do their very best. The History Department has a good group of people that are fantastic professors.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students All. USM has the academics and the activites to appeal to everyone.
Tips for prospective students If you are bringing a car on campus, weekends are the time to nab the best parking spots because a lot of people leave to go home. If you become tired of eating in the cafeteria, try going to an event on campus because they usually provide food. Rent your books from the bookstore. You won't spend as much money, and it's less hassle than when you try to return books in exchange for a low buy-back cost. Also, if you are considering living in a residence hall, I urge you to do so at least one year of your college life. The people you will live with will become close friends and will help make your college experience more enjoyable. There is nothing as fun as an impromptu get-together at 2:00 am in the morning for a Just Dance competition or a little Mario Kart.
Bang for the buck Tuition for USM is one of the highest in the state for a public university. Combined with on-campus residency, which means housing and meal plan costs, it can become expensive. This said, it is totally worth the money. Tuition covers a variety of things, including admission to sporting events and access to the campus gym. The number of activities provided for free on campus help ease the strain of college living expenses. The cost is basically an investment in education, and, as the old saying goes, you get that for which you have paid.
Am enjoying being here The campus community is really amazing, and there is an event almost every night of the week. Music lovers will enjoy the FREE weekly performances of the music department, which are a variety of orchestra, choir, and guest performers. There are bi-weekly productions from the theater department who perform everything from Shakespeare to Moulin Rouge. FREE Forums are held frequently to discuss major topics from around the world, such as immigration and the revolution in Egypt. FREE Science Cafes are held in the campus Starbucks and feature speakers on topics in the scientific community, including the social sciences (Starbucks specialty drinks are 1/2 off during these lectures!). During football season, Friday Night at the Fountain is the pep rally for the campus. It provides FREE live entertainment to help pump up the fans for the big game. Football enthusiasts, games are THE place to be on Saturdays. The great thing about USM is that there are always incredible new people to meet, whether at one of the events listed previously or walking back from the library at midnight and stumbling upon a salsa group practicing in the middle of campus (oh, yeah, it happened to me). The campus community really has made my college experience the best I could have ever hoped to enjoy.
Am learning a lot The classes offered at USM have provided me with everything I hoped to expect when I went to college. I have found most classes to be interesting, and they hold my attention in a way classes in high school never could. I am thrilled by the right amount of challenging material and the opportunities to learn more from experiencing the lesson instead of just sitting in class taking notes. We are urged to be creative, not just studious. Also, the professors at USM go out of their way to provide each student with the assistance they need. My professors have helped me achieve my academic goals with their dedication to my education.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Many students who are looking to get ahead and achieve success in future careers will find it at Southern MS. College is a pivotal stage in life that determines future living. This school is also great for minorities of any race and gender. It is also very good for musical and artistic type students. University of Southern MS is a great school to begin your future career life and have a blast doing it.
Bang for the buck This is probably one of the best financial deal in a four year college you will find in Mississippi and even the nation. USM has a very financially acceptable price. The admission, tuition, and total cost of being admitted into Southern is a great deal. All the student activities, services, education, and living are more than you could ask for in the amount you pay to attend this college. Some people pay twice triple and even ten times more the amount of USM tuition and get the same student education and services. I would say you definitely get the most of what you pay and maybe even more.
Will enjoy being here Like I've said before, I am not even a student at USM but I am there almost as if I were a resident. I love it on campus even though technically I am not suppose to be there without an ID. There is always something to do on campus even if your not a student, so just imagine if you were a student! Intramural sports, all access gym classes, clubs, sororities, fraternities, work study, restaurants on campus for socializing, and of course the cafeteria has very good food and is all you can eat! I know I would enjoy being on campus. I would be having fun and at the same time I know I would be getting a good education from the reviews I've heard and read about the teachers and faculty.
Will learn a lot I will definitely learn a lot on this campus. I have many friends that have attended or are attending this college. One is a dental student, another is in speech pathology, I know many people in nursing and doctorate degrees, and most of all Hattiesburg is a very musical and artistic city, therefore its student are abundant in musical and arts degrees. I have learned a lot from my talking to my friends and faculty at USM and I'm not even a student yet! There is definitely something for everyone at Southern MS and many people I know have succeeded and been very well off after graduating form Southern MS.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students USM, is great for any type of student whether they want to be anti-social or not.
Tips for prospective students For future students my tip for you is, buy ALL of your books online if you need them because you will get a better deal that way. No need for any vehicles on-campus since everything is within walking distance. For example, if you want to go to Checkers, its within a 10 minute walking radius from anywhere on campus. The gym is in the middle of campus and the hours are very convenient for anyone who wants to work out, play ball, swim, or do any other activities. They even offer personal trainers at your expense.
Bang for the buck Of course just like every other college, USM is also out for money. Staying on campus is more convient than staying off campus. The meal plans aren't really worth the money you have to pay for them so if you choose to come here, then get the meal plan you think you're going to utilize more. As far as the books, most of the time you don't really need to buy your books at all, especially as a freshman.
Am enjoying being here The social crowd here at USM, is one of a kind. No racial barriers, alot of on campus actives that will keep a person busy.
Am learning a lot Every since attending my first class here at the University of Southern Miss, I've come to the conclusion that the amount of information each student learns depends on the students self limitations within that class. If you allow yourself to not show up for class and to not do any kind of work then you will learn exactly what you put into it.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you want a big school campus with a small school feel, this is the school for you! After a few weeks, you'll realize that USM is not as big as it seems.
Tips for prospective students 1. Be sociable! Make friends with people on your hall, in the laundry room, and ESPECIALLY in class! It will only help you later! 2. GO TO CLASS! Teachers really will help out students that are struggling ONLY if they see them trying! 3. Don't be a bum! USM may seem like a big school, but everyone knows everyone. Your reputation will take you a LONG way! 4. DO NOT pre order your books! Unless you're on a scholarship that covers them, buy your books ANYWHERE else! Also, try to buy books from friends for MUCH cheaper! 5. Go to school events! Show school spirit! Most of it is free!
Bang for the buck Honestly, USM is not the cheapest school, but it's not the most expensive either. We really do get great opportunities here. If students want more, they should expect to pay more.
Am enjoying being here It's hard not to make friends here unless you NEVER leave your room! The campus is so diverse and there is something here for everyone!
Am learning a lot I have learned so much from my professors at this school! Most of them are extremely passionate about the subject, so they give you knowledge you won't get in a cookie cutter class.

Tips for prospective students Get involved on campus in whatever way you can. Also, if possible, it would be a good idea to live on campus at least your first year because when you live off campus you miss out on a lot ( I would know). Another tip is to shop around for your books and wait until you have an actual assignment in a particular textbook because I have had several courses where I bought the book (even if the professor said I would need it) and I did not even open it the whole semester. Save money where you can!
Bang for the buck Southern Miss is pretty affordable, especially if you are in state. There are lots of scholarships available, as well as financial aid through loans and grants. It is one of the cheapest public universities in the state, while still providing a quality education to the students.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying my time at USM because I have found my niche. It is easy to find your place there because there are so many opportunities to make friends and get involved, whether it is throught intramural sports, clubs, sororities/fraternities, student leadership, or community involvement. I personally met most of my friends either in the dorm, in my classes, through intramurals, at church, or in clubs. There are football/baseball/volleyball/soccer/basketball and practically any other sport that you can attend (and being a student you get in free, which is nice). There are also plays or recitals you can go see. Southern has a wonderful performing arts program. I am not even really big into theatre but I enjoy going to the performances.
Am learning a lot I am a nursing student and have found that while the classes are challenging, I have learned a lot and feel I am getting a quality education. If you plan on pursuing a career in nursing, I would definately recommend Southern Miss because they do a great job on centering their information around evidence-based research. Also, most of the clinical instructors currently work in a hospital so they are up to date on changes or different ways of doing things that you may not learn from a text book. They also have a simulation lab as well as several local hospitals and nursing homes that the student gets first hand experience in. Even if you are not a nursing student, I would recommend Southern. I completed my first two years of undergrad at USM, covering the core courses in English, Sociology, Science, Mathmatics, Computer, and History. There is not a class that I did not learn a great deal in. The professors that I have had are easy to talk to as well as well prepared for class. They actually teach you something instead of handing you busy work.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck USM is pretty affordable, especially if you are in state. There are lot of scholarships available and also of course financial aid through loans and grants. It is one of the cheapest in the state and probably in the nation. Even though text books are expensive, you get half the price you paid for them when you return them.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying being here. The Freshmen Eagle Walk Week was great. I had a great time. There is a lot of things on campus that you can get involved in.
Am learning a lot I am in my freshman year at USM majoring in Forensic Science: Chemistry and I have learned a lot so far. There are many places you can go to for help. So you should not have any excuse of why you are failing classes, when you are offered free help.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great if you are planning on a career in either music (of any type!) or polymer science.
Tips for prospective students Get your applications in for the Luckyday and Leadership scholarships and be sure that you read all the requirements! They are both a great asset to have in paying for your schooling (and they provide great perks too).
Bang for the buck Out of all the schools I was researching, Southern was definitely the most cost efficient! My tuition is under $8000 a semester!
Will enjoy being here USM has a beautiful campus, and there's always something to do. Not to mention the fact that Hattiesburg is the quintessential college town; it's big enough to offer plenty, but still has a small town feel in areas.
Will learn a lot The professors at USM are some of the beast in the country. They genuinely care about offering their students the best possible education they can recieve.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Prepare yourself mentally for the work and do not over work yourself. Take it all in before you jump head first into anything.
Bang for the buck Living on campus is costly but there are many other colleges that cost way more. I don't like how they give you dining dollars dollar for dollar. I think there should be some special package or deal.
Am enjoying being here I love my school. I made a great choice when I chose this diverse college in a diverse community. There are a lot of things to get into. We have a wide range of sports to suit almost everyone. Come get involved. Great college with a lot of friendly faces.
Am learning a lot The classes challenges your thinking and you have to be well prepared. I find myself frequently putting what I have learned to use in my everyday life even when it's something simple as if a plant is a monocot or dicot.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities Nothing but fraternities and sororities. Nothing worthwile.
What to do for fun Nothing.
Food and Dining The food is okay, but there are too many people in the cafeteria all the time.
Dorm Life I've never lived here, so I couldn't tell you.
Academic Rigor Most of the departments, especially the math department, the art department, and some of the science departments will overwork students here. It's too rigorous. That is not a good thing.
Tips for prospective students If you want to teach at a secondary school, this university is okay. If you want a career, go somewhere else.
In three sentences I honestly don't feel like my hard work amounts to much at this university. One reason is that the majority of instructors here aren't very good at teaching anything to the students. Another reason is that the advisers pressure you to choose a major, even if it doesn't prepare you for the career you want to have.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students USM is great for everyone and is welcoming for everyone. For people who do not want a very large college, USM has a great size of about 13000 students. Also for art majors, USM has an excellent and accredited art department. They also have great therapeutic recreation, polymer science, nursing, and business departments. Anyone who would love to travel abroad, USM offers several study abroad programs. Also, for students wanting to join an honors college, USM's honor's college provides small classes and travel opportunities.
Tips for prospective students The campus is small and there is a police escort service at night so feel free to schedule classes with only 15 minutes between and night classes. Also, definitely read your textbooks and look in your syllabus. Unlike high school, teachers do not have to tell you about an assignment, they expect you to know to do it. Get involved in student activities because they are a great way to get to meet people. Your adviser is very smart, but always double check everything after being advised for classes because they may make a mistake.
Bang for the buck USM is a state school so the tuition is relatively low compared to others. They have a great academic program and prove that you can get an excellent education without paying an Ivy League price. In 2010 dorms ranged from 1500 to 2500 depending on whether the room was single or double, or community or private bath. I considered this a very good price because everything's included, internet, cable, water, heat, and even laundry. The basic meal plan includes all you eat at the cafeteria called the Fresh Food Co. Also with your tuition you receive free entry into sporting events and use of the Payne Center.
Am enjoying being here Southern Miss has a lot to offer and is a very positive environment. There is a wide variety of people so everyone will find friends. They have numerous honor societies, special interest groups, community service groups, religious groups, and other groups to join. They also have very active sororities and fraternities that are very friendly, work together, do not have rival sororities and fraternities, and do not exclude non-Greek students from activities. USM also has very many intramural sports along with a great gym called the Payne Center which offers classes ranging from aerobics and Zumba to yoga and Pilates, a weight center, basketball and tennis courts, a walking track, and a pool. The campus is small and it's very easy to walk to classes and back to dorms.
Am learning a lot All of my teachers at Southern have extensive knowledge in their field of study. Several of them have written books, my history teacher was featured on history channel, my Anatomy and Physiology teacher wrote our textbook, and one of the therapeutic recreation teachers is the former president of therapeutic recreation's national organization called ATRA. Also the teachers are very willing to help students and all of mine have been very welcoming during their office hours to discuss any questions.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities there are so many clubs that are exceedingly diverse, from the academic clubs to feminist clubs and even anime clubs.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the rose garden is very beautiful, and it is rumored that there is a $1000 fine for picking one of them. also, there is a bridge over a pond that people like to get professional photos taken. people say that new couples should never go to breakup bridge, named so because people are rumored to break up after spending time on the bridge.
Bang for the buck the education i am receiving from usm is rigorous (i got accepted to the school of nursing), and they expect a lot from their students. i know i will appreciate the effort my teachers put into educating us. but it all depends on what avenue of study you want to pursue. an art history degree, for example, will not get you as far as a bachelor's in nursing.
What to do for fun during football season, usm is a huge tailgating community. tents are set up all over campus, and bands come play all day every home game. the whole city of hattiesburg loves usm football season. there are also many programs set up by the student life committee including rec sports, and a variety of other programs.
Food and Dining the food on campus is good, but it depends on where you go to eat. the commons does not have very delicious food, however the powerhouse serves some killer chicken tender baskets, along with other great dishes.
Dorm Life i have never lived on campus at usm, but i have had many friends who have lived there, both in the dorms and at the greek life houses, and they all have enjoyed staying there.
Academic Rigor the academic rigor of the courses taught at usm all depends on the type of class you are taking. an advanced organic chemistry class will obviously require much more brainpower than an art appreciation class. many of the different colleges (business, health, etc) are gaining national rankings, so it all depends on the degree plan chosen.
Tips for prospective students check around the other bookstores in town besides the main bookstore on campus, barnes and noble, when buying textbooks. there are much better prices off-campus. search for scholarships. usm offers many academic, degree-specific, and other types of foundation scholarships.
In three sentences my university has many very talented and intelligent professors and has been growing by leaps and bounds even since i have been attending there since the fall of 2010. new programs are being implemented to enhance learning and aiding students in finding out the way in which they learn, which i have never seen at another college. usm always seems to find ways to better the college.

Categories Comments Campus Safety all over campus we have emergency telephones that when activated flash a blue light and siren to alert the campus police. also our campus police do an excellent job of patrolling the campus day and night.
Greek Life i am a member of kappa delta sorority here at usm and i think we have a wonderful program here. the chapters are growing but are not as large as the other chapters in the state. which i think is also a blessing since we have a chance to fully know each of the other young men and women in greek life.
Clubs and Activities there is always something fun to do at the university campus!
Great for these types of students usm is great for every type of student ans everyone can find a place that they belong.
Bang for the buck the university of southern mississippi is the place that you want to be.
What to do for fun there is always an athletic event during the week which is always fun. there is a wonderful student life association that has something planned for every week it seems.
Tips for prospective students the university of southern mississippi has a great athletic program and is also an environmentally friendly campus. usm has the best nursing program that you could ask for with teachers who really make a difference.
In three sentences the university of southern mississippi is a wonderful university, that i would give a 5 star award to. i would recommend to anyone who want to attend a university in mississippi to attend usm. the professors here are actually concerned for your well being and not just for the paycheck.

Categories Comments What to do for fun For fun, students like to hang out by the fountain. During football season we have FNATF(Friday Night At The Fountain), Its like a mini concert and a pep rally for the football players.
Food and Dining Eagle Dining has some of the best food any many choices. We have Sub Way, Chik Fila, Agora, The Fresh, and Hillcrest. We have bonus bucks is money that you have on your i.d card and can eat at any place on campus. There is a limit though.
Dorm Life Dorm life is awesome. You make many friends and you actually interact with each other and do activities on the hall. The rooms are a nice size and plenty of closet space.
Academic Rigor We are all about academics. We have many tutoring centers and we also have traveling tutors who will come to your dorm and help with any subject.
Tips for prospective students If your considering coming here, you're making the right choice. You will bleed black and gold. If you are considering going into the science field we have one of the best science researchers and centers out of any other college. We're also have one of the best nursing programs. Our Greek life is also top notch and amazing. You won't regret your choice, everyone is friendly and social also willing to help you.
In three sentences The University Of Southern Mississippi is the place to be. There are many opportunities and organizations to get involved in. We are top notch when it comes to academics, sports and organizations.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I think campus is generally safe. There is heavy police presence but everyone is here to study not commit crimes anyway.
Greek Life There is the divine 9 African American Fraternities and there are the other fraternities that only last for 4 years. very diverse.
Clubs and Activities There are various clubs ranging from those with footholds in academics and then there are those that are there for community activism. There are also those that are purely for fun.
Bang for the buck Over all I think you will get your money's worth out of this school. Education is a big staple in the culture of Southern Mississippi.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do for fun. There are game halls and plenty of sporting events, parties, and community service events.
Food and Dining The food is actually pretty good and there is an excellent variety available. There is also a lot of restaurants available at different places on campus.
Dorm Life The dorms aren't beautiful apartments by a long shot. They do however have nice honors dorms.
Academic Rigor The plans of study aren't easy by a long shot. However, the faculty is willing to help and there are numerous tutoring programs.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused and don't become infatuated with the nightlife. Go to class! No matter what is going on, go to class!
In three sentences A beautiful campus filled with beautiful and brilliant students. A world renowned faculty that are willing to assist you at a moments notices. Schools that cater to specific areas of study with excellent plans of study.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The best things to do for fun is to go to the gym, join a club, and hang out in the lounge and play a little pool.
Food and Dining The only place I ate at was the cafe. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet for only $7.99. If you have nice friends, they'll swipe you in for a free meal. The Power House, Chik-Fil-a, Subway, Stone's Throw, Starbucks, and Einstein Bros. are delicious but kind of pricey.
Dorm Life I didn't stay on campus, but my friends who did, they said that it was pretty decent. The walls are kind of thin, but bearable. There were a lot of huge roaches in there, so if you're not a roach person keep a shoe and a can of Raid very close.
Academic Rigor There was only 1 class I really had trouble with. Make sure you ask any questions you have (even ones you think are dumb). Make sure you get a full understanding before you walk out of the classroom.
Tips for prospective students Stay on top of your work. Start your homework AS SOON AS YOU GET IT! Stay with a good crowd of people that you actually can trust with your life. Be involved with extracurricular activities, and don't park in faculty & staff, commuters, or residents parking lots without a decal. Tickets are no joke.
In three sentences My experience with USM wasn't all that great being that I was a commuter. Half of the time, it was pretty boring, but as far as classes most teachers are cool. The school was clean looking in the daytime, but at night roaches were everywhere, and it looked dingy and filthy.

Categories Comments Food and Dining I have not eaten much on campus. I have eaten in the cafeteria once on campus. They seemed to offer many different food options for the diverse student population.
Dorm Life Unfortunately, I am not applicable to give my opinion on the dorm life because I have not had to stay in a dorm while attending USM.
Academic Rigor The rigor of the work at USM is slightly more than required from a junior college or community college. Students are expected to be responsible for their own work and projects and typically aren't given second chances to complete the work.
Tips for prospective students New/Transfer students need to stay on top of their degree plan to be sure to take the courses best suited for each semester because some courses are not offered every semester and can lead to a student falling behind in his/her degree plan.
In three sentences The University of Southern Mississippi offers a well rounded education for lively high school graduates to older adults seeking to further their education. The University offers many activities that all students no matter the age, major, or Fraternity/Sorority can attend. Overall, USM is a great school to attend for furthering a person's education and for creating a well rounded individual through providing interactive events/activities for him/her to participate in at school.

Categories Comments Greek Life Southern is very involved in Greek life! I definitely recommend! Offers plenty of help with school and rack up on hours of community service. Good organization to be in to make life long friends and to have fun as well!
What to do for fun If you like to go out and party, there are fun bars and clubs! If you are a freshman, the frat house is the way to go. Dancing and awesome Dj, definitely a must-go! When you get tired of partying hard all the time my personal favorite is the gold pub. It's more relaxed with live bands and a porch area to hang out on.
Food and Dining Hattiesburg has endless places to eat. Plaid Rhino is one really good place with generous student discounts! And a free game room while you wait for food! Mugshots also does special for students on Tuesdays!
Dorm Life I live off campus, but all my friends live on campus. Century Park dorms are the best... however they are really strict and annoying. McCarty is the way to go if you are a guy. You do not want Jones or Wilbur Hall!
Academic Rigor This all depends on what teachers you take and what your major is. Yes, the classes are more difficult than high school, so don't think you're just going to wing it, not going to happen. However, there are plenty of tutor and writing centers to help.
Tips for prospective students Do not be lazy first semester just because you can! I made the mistake of getting used to sleeping in and taking late classes. Mistake! you want to reserve most of the evening to do schoolwork, not just now waking up and going to classes!
In three sentences The college is very welcoming to the transition from high school to college life. It has so many groups and activities to be involved in, so there is something for everyone. It is also only a square mile radius so it is fairly easy to walk to classes.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck I believe the school is worth every penny because it might break someone pockets just a little but once you get on campus everything is free. There is no hassle in buying season tickets or worrying about how to eat at places on campus that is not the cafeteria.
What to do for fun There are many things to do for fun, such as, going to the gym, being apart of an organization/fraternity/sorority, exploring the campuses arcade and game rooms, going to the school's ball games, or just meeting new people and socializing.
Food and Dining The dining facilities are great there are many places to choose from on campus for people with different taste in food. One is not subjected to the same thing everyday like some campuses.
Dorm Life Dorm life is okay, you will have a curfew but that helps you focus more on school rather than partying and staying out too late.
Academic Rigor It's important to be in good academic standing because it opens opportunities for various scholarships and organizations to be apart of.
Tips for prospective students I suggest all students take advantage of getting to know his or her professors in order to achieve throughout the fall/spring semsters.

Categories Comments Campus Safety USM is very concerned with personal safety. There are telephones all around campus in case after studying late at night at the library you want a university police escort to walk you back to your dorm. There have been several accounts of theft, but none involving any harm to anyone.
Greek Life Greek life is extremely important to Southern Miss. I can't speak for them too much for I am not currently involved in a sorority, however, I do plan on rushing this year because it seems very fun and fulfilling.
Clubs and Activities There are SO many different options on campus, from Ultimate Frisbee to our very own Quidditch team, USM is a place for anyone and everyone.
Great for these types of students USM is great for social butterflies and people who love to volunteer.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every year, the freshman have a competition where they paint the Eagle Walk that our football players walk through to get to the field. Everyone gets out their old clothes to rub around in gold paint and try to cover their designated square the fastest. It is definitely an experience to remember!
Bang for the buck USM is in a nice town, the professors seem to actually care, and the array of people who attend is astounding.
What to do for fun The theatre department puts on about 3 productions a semester, which are always amazing. We have so many clubs that you would be hard-pressed to not find one you are interested in. The Student Activities Council is also constantly putting together events, such as crawfish boils and concerts on the grounds.
Food and Dining On campus is our main cafeteria, the Fresh Food Company, which is spectacular for college kids. Downsides would be small selections on weekends and the fact it only stays open until 8 p.m. However, we also have a Subway, Chic-fil-a, and A Stone's Throw, a fast food restaurant in the middle of the freshman quad which is open late into the night.
Dorm Life I can only speak for Century Park, but I found dorm life very impressive. There are RA's on every floor who plan events every couple weeks so all the students can get together and have fun or just chat. The maintenance workers are always fast and efficient if there ever is a problem with your room.
Academic Rigor USM offers very challenging classes, and speaking as an Honors College student, that means something. The Honors classes are very challenging and not something to take lightly. However, some general education classes are what some call easy A's.
Tips for prospective students Do NOT be a dorm rat! Take advantage of every opportunity to get involved and to meet people. Even in the classes you are excelling in, take the time to visit your professors during office hours and get to know them on a personal level.
In three sentences USM has a small, beautiful campus. Its low faculty to student ratio is ideal for those who require a little more attention. USM offers tons of extracurricular opportunities, which allows for everyone to find their own little niche.

Categories Comments Food and Dining I can not say anything good about the dining. Getting a meal plan there will not be the best decision. Its better to buy groceries from Walmart and store them in your room.
Dorm Life The old dorms are not so nice. The new dorms called century park look nice but they are expensive. They are supposed to rebuild the old dorms in two years.
Academic Rigor The work is not difficult, but you do have stay up to date with your work. Do not throw away any work that you have done and make sure you keep copies. It is important that you study everyday.
Tips for prospective students While attending, be sure to save enough money for books and supplies. Also be open to asking questions. This will benefit you in the long run.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police take their jobs seriously and continuously patrol the campus to ensure student safety. They even offer escort services when you have to be somewhere on campus at night and you don't want to walk alone.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of groups and organizations on campus.
Bang for the buck This school boasts a great environment that is conducive to learning and meeting new, friendly people. Although I feel that colleges in general are becoming too expensive, I would much rather spend that money here, knowing that I am getting a competitive education in a pleasant environment.
What to do for fun The school holds various events for students throughout the year and Hardy Street is lined with many locations to have fun and relax.
Food and Dining Some days the food is ok and other days your best option may be a salad and fruit. Those who live on campus automatically get extra money to buy food at on-campus restaurants and snack stands.
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty decent and the staff encourage interaction among residence and are very friendly and helpful.
Academic Rigor My rating here may be slightly obscured by the fact that I am a nursing major, and, before I was a nursing major, I was a biology major. Both of these majors are pretty challenging and rigorous.
Tips for prospective students My tip would be to come here expecting to EARN your degree, because you will have to work for it. I would, also, advise you to get to know your instructors in case you need them for recommendation letters or internships. Lastly, make a couple of friends to help ease the stress that can be associated with college.
In three sentences USM is very diverse with a friendly community. From my experience, most of the faculty are available to help students when needed. This school is, also, surrounded by restaurants, shopping centers, and other places where students can go to have fun and take their mind off of their studies.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Policemen are on the clock 24/7. They are always watching and taking care of the students and faculty on campus. The alert email/text message system is very helpful and can warn students about crimes in the area.
Greek Life We have several Greek organizations under the CPC, IFC, and NPC. They all actively work together to support each other and give back to the campus and community on a daily basis.
Clubs and Activities There are over 250 organizations on campus. There are religious groups, fraternities and sororities, student government, activities council, community service groups, and SO much more! There is truly something for everyone!
Great for these types of students There is something for every type of person at USM. All my friends have different stories and come from different places. I love USM because it brings together so many different types of people and makes us a family.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every year during homecoming week there is a competition between different organizations on campus and one event is the Fountain Sit. At the center of campus is a beautiful fountain and one member from each team has to sit in the fountain and the one to last the longest is the winner! Last year the winner and runner up were in there for almost 6 hours! Centennial Lawn is a great place to relax or lay out on a sunny day. It is also the location for pep rallies! Football games are always packed! Before each home game, the football team, marching band, Dixie Darlings (amazing dance team), and cheerleaders walk down the Eagle Walk which takes them through campus to be cheered on by all the tailgaters!
Bang for the buck This is a public university, and you definitely get what you pay for when you take advantage of everything the campus has to offer.
What to do for fun There are many events on campus that are hosted by the cafeteria or student organizations, like craw fish boils, pep rallies, parties, music events, educational seminars, and even game shows! It seems like EVERY day there is something happening on campus. Hattiesburg also has a variety of activities to do. There are many restaurants, laser tag, bowling, a movie theater, downtown festivals, and more. USM is never lacking fun.
Food and Dining There are many food choices, from two cafeterias to restaurants on campus. The meal plan allows you to eat at either cafeteria which include a wide variety of food to choose, and Bonus Bucks allow you to eat at the restaurants. The Fresh (main cafeteria) is a popular spot to socialize and also hosts different late night events throughout the year. Every once in a while there is nothing substantial to eat, and the Fresh closes at 8 pm making it inconvenient for night class students.
Dorm Life I am entering my sophomore year and living in a dorm just like I did freshman year. Living in the dorm exposes you to everything the campus has to offer as well as sets you up to meet new people to hang out with in or out of the dorm. The dorms are clean and well maintained. They are extremely safe anytime and secured by policemen at night. Changing roommates is a simple process, and the RA and Residence Life Office are easy to access if needed.
Academic Rigor First off, I am in the Honors College at USM and am required to take some honors courses each semester. I can honestly say my regular courses were very challenging as well as my honors courses. Study groups are great to have and really do help you learn the material better than if you were studying alone. The homework helps you understand and can often be the deciding factor of your letter grade; make sure to do it all.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you own a great pair of tennis shoes because you will most likely walk to all your classes unless you commute. Bring a rain jacket and rain boots, but also carry an umbrella in your backpack; there are surprise showers all the time. Stay in town during the weekends because there is always something fun to do. Utilize the library; it's my best friend. Get involved and learn about the many traditions and history of USM. You only get out of school what you put into it, so give it your all!
In three sentences The campus is small but makes me feel at home within its close community. The flora on campus and the hospitable people calm me between my daily classes that challenge me. The organizations on campus give ample opportunity to those that seek it, and the family I have made here inspire me every day to leave USM better than I found it.

Clubs and Activities There are literally hundreds of organizations and clubs for any interest.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During the first week of class, freshman students paint a street on campus using only their hands and feet to spread the paint.
Bang for the buck Tuition seems to be par for the course for a university. The faculty is great and students can earn a great education.
Food and Dining As far as a cafeteria goes, the Fresh Food Company has a great selection of meals, from the tasty to the healthy food many students enjoy. Far better than the other colleges in the state.
Dorm Life The freshman honors dorms are amazing! The rooms have private bathrooms and come with many amenities. The washing machines even text when your laundry is done with its cycle.
Academic Rigor Honors classes in my major are quite challenging.
Tips for prospective students Apply for all scholarships for which you are eligible. Know the parking rules; parking management writes lots of tickets. Make sure all paperwork is submitted promptly and orderly. Check on it yourself to make sure it was sent from your school.
In three sentences USM is the third best school in the world for polymer science, which is my major. Categories Comments What to do for fun There are always activities going on, on the campus. You also have the Payne Center for people who think working out is fun! There are always concerts and plays and a sand volleyball court to have a little competition.
Food and Dining The first week as a freshman the food was wonderful, as the year has gone on the food has begun to not be so great. still good but not great. most of the staff is fun and enjoyable to be around but some seem unhappy. the fresh is always clean!
Dorm Life My dorm experience was not that wonderful, I was placed with an awful roommate and wish that they would have listened to my wish to be switched. I live in Century Park and as far as the quality of the dorm it is a wonderful place to live, you really feel like you havent even left home.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel extremely safe on campus. Plus, there's a campus number you can call and a patrol officer will come in a golf cart to transport you, if it's late at night. The same officers will come help you change your tire too, if you ever need it!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus People say, if you walk across a certain bridge at the front of campus, holding the hand of the person you love, the two of you will get married eventually.
Bang for the buck I think the University is priced really well, especially the in state tuition. I'm all for lowering the cost of college though. *Look into scholarships and grants the college offers!

Dorm Life I love living on campus! It gets me my exercise AND I'm close enough to everything to where it's not an issue. (Did I mention campus is only one square mile?)
Academic Rigor Realize that college is a different world than high school; you WILL have to work for your grades - but that's every university. Trust me, this is coming from a kid who took AP classes in high school, never studied, and still made A's.
Tips for prospective students Southern Miss is just big enough to feel like a university but just small enough to feel like a family. Don't be shy, most everyone is extremely friendly and will want to help you out.

Categories Comments Food and Dining For college kids, food is something that becomes a priority! On the campus of USM, there are many different options for food. The main attraction is the Fresh, which is the cafeteria in the middle of campus. You are allowed to go in several times a day and whatever and however much food you want to. This is also great for socializing and meeting new people as well. Another place to get food would be the Powerhouse, the Agora, Einstein Bagels and Co., Seymour's (chick-fil-a and subway), and Stone's Throw. These are all quick restaurant places to grab some food and keep going. And finally, there is Hillcrest which is the sorority girl's dorms but it is a small cafeteria with great food.
