Great for these types of students

Those who want to pursue a career in music, who love small campuses, and those who want to be part of a crazy fan base.

    Tips for prospective students

Buy your books after classes start if you can; some classes use different books than listed, or just wont use them. Attend the football games, FNATF, and Eagle Walk before the game starts. You don't want to miss out on the excitement.

    Bang for the buck

It's a tad expensive if you're not a Mississippi resident or didn't get the out of state fee wavered. But it's worth it no matter how expensive it can be.

    Am enjoying being here

One of the best things about this school is the students. There is always something going on, especially around game time. Friday Night At the Fountain (FNATF) is one of the best. Golden Eagle Welcome Week (GEWW) is another that is focused on freshmen and transfer students to help the transition to Southern Miss great; you also get to paint the Eagle Walk. But other than that, the students are nice and someone is always willing to help if you need it.

    Am learning a lot

The Professors here are really dedicated to making sure the students understand the material. The classes are fun and easy to get to.

Great for all types of students.

    Tips for prospective students

Find an advisor early. They will be able to direct you to the path that is best for you and want the best for you. Also, make sure to take Research Methods as most students go into university without proper writing skills.

    Bang for the buck

For what the university charges for tuition, the students receive the maximum benefit. Just wished the books were not so expensive.

    Am enjoying being here

I am really enjoying the univeristy and the city. The campus at univeristy is easily accessable and and the departments are very helpful. There's much to do in Hattiesburg for a variety of tastes.

    Am learning a lot

I am a student majoring in history with a focus on European History. I find my professors to be well prepared and able and willing to help students to do their very best. The History Department has a good group of people that are fantastic professors.

All. USM has the academics and the activites to appeal to everyone.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are bringing a car on campus, weekends are the time to nab the best parking spots because a lot of people leave to go home. If you become tired of eating in the cafeteria, try going to an event on campus because they usually provide food. Rent your books from the bookstore. You won't spend as much money, and it's less hassle than when you try to return books in exchange for a low buy-back cost. Also, if you are considering living in a residence hall, I urge you to do so at least one year of your college life. The people you will live with will become close friends and will help make your college experience more enjoyable. There is nothing as fun as an impromptu get-together at 2:00 am in the morning for a Just Dance competition or a little Mario Kart.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition for USM is one of the highest in the state for a public university. Combined with on-campus residency, which means housing and meal plan costs, it can become expensive. This said, it is totally worth the money. Tuition covers a variety of things, including admission to sporting events and access to the campus gym. The number of activities provided for free on campus help ease the strain of college living expenses. The cost is basically an investment in education, and, as the old saying goes, you get that for which you have paid.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus community is really amazing, and there is an event almost every night of the week. Music lovers will enjoy the FREE weekly performances of the music department, which are a variety of orchestra, choir, and guest performers. There are bi-weekly productions from the theater department who perform everything from Shakespeare to Moulin Rouge. FREE Forums are held frequently to discuss major topics from around the world, such as immigration and the revolution in Egypt. FREE Science Cafes are held in the campus Starbucks and feature speakers on topics in the scientific community, including the social sciences (Starbucks specialty drinks are 1/2 off during these lectures!). During football season, Friday Night at the Fountain is the pep rally for the campus. It provides FREE live entertainment to help pump up the fans for the big game. Football enthusiasts, games are THE place to be on Saturdays. The great thing about USM is that there are always incredible new people to meet, whether at one of the events listed previously or walking back from the library at midnight and stumbling upon a salsa group practicing in the middle of campus (oh, yeah, it happened to me). The campus community really has made my college experience the best I could have ever hoped to enjoy.

    Am learning a lot

The classes offered at USM have provided me with everything I hoped to expect when I went to college. I have found most classes to be interesting, and they hold my attention in a way classes in high school never could. I am thrilled by the right amount of challenging material and the opportunities to learn more from experiencing the lesson instead of just sitting in class taking notes. We are urged to be creative, not just studious. Also, the professors at USM go out of their way to provide each student with the assistance they need. My professors have helped me achieve my academic goals with their dedication to my education.

Great for these types of students

Many students who are looking to get ahead and achieve success in future careers will find it at Southern MS. College is a pivotal stage in life that determines future living. This school is also great for minorities of any race and gender. It is also very good for musical and artistic type students. University of Southern MS is a great school to begin your future career life and have a blast doing it.

    Bang for the buck

This is probably one of the best financial deal in a four year college you will find in Mississippi and even the nation. USM has a very financially acceptable price. The admission, tuition, and total cost of being admitted into Southern is a great deal. All the student activities, services, education, and living are more than you could ask for in the amount you pay to attend this college. Some people pay twice triple and even ten times more the amount of USM tuition and get the same student education and services. I would say you definitely get the most of what you pay and maybe even more.

    Will enjoy being here

Like I've said before, I am not even a student at USM but I am there almost as if I were a resident. I love it on campus even though technically I am not suppose to be there without an ID. There is always something to do on campus even if your not a student, so just imagine if you were a student! Intramural sports, all access gym classes, clubs, sororities, fraternities, work study, restaurants on campus for socializing, and of course the cafeteria has very good food and is all you can eat! I know I would enjoy being on campus. I would be having fun and at the same time I know I would be getting a good education from the reviews I've heard and read about the teachers and faculty.

    Will learn a lot

I will definitely learn a lot on this campus. I have many friends that have attended or are attending this college. One is a dental student, another is in speech pathology, I know many people in nursing and doctorate degrees, and most of all Hattiesburg is a very musical and artistic city, therefore its student are abundant in musical and arts degrees. I have learned a lot from my talking to my friends and faculty at USM and I'm not even a student yet! There is definitely something for everyone at Southern MS and many people I know have succeeded and been very well off after graduating form Southern MS.

Be yourself, don't come here and try to be something other than yourself. Study, study, study and attend class cause in the long run it will help you out alot

Great for these types of students

USM, is great for any type of student whether they want to be anti-social or not.

    Tips for prospective students

For future students my tip for you is, buy ALL of your books online if you need them because you will get a better deal that way. No need for any vehicles on-campus since everything is within walking distance. For example, if you want to go to Checkers, its within a 10 minute walking radius from anywhere on campus. The gym is in the middle of campus and the hours are very convenient for anyone who wants to work out, play ball, swim, or do any other activities. They even offer personal trainers at your expense.

    Bang for the buck

Of course just like every other college, USM is also out for money. Staying on campus is more convient than staying off campus. The meal plans aren't really worth the money you have to pay for them so if you choose to come here, then get the meal plan you think you're going to utilize more. As far as the books, most of the time you don't really need to buy your books at all, especially as a freshman.

    Am enjoying being here

The social crowd here at USM, is one of a kind. No racial barriers, alot of on campus actives that will keep a person busy.

    Am learning a lot

Every since attending my first class here at the University of Southern Miss, I've come to the conclusion that the amount of information each student learns depends on the students self limitations within that class. If you allow yourself to not show up for class and to not do any kind of work then you will learn exactly what you put into it.

Great for these types of students

If you want a big school campus with a small school feel, this is the school for you! After a few weeks, you'll realize that USM is not as big as it seems.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Be sociable! Make friends with people on your hall, in the laundry room, and ESPECIALLY in class! It will only help you later! 2. GO TO CLASS! Teachers really will help out students that are struggling ONLY if they see them trying! 3. Don't be a bum! USM may seem like a big school, but everyone knows everyone. Your reputation will take you a LONG way! 4. DO NOT pre order your books! Unless you're on a scholarship that covers them, buy your books ANYWHERE else! Also, try to buy books from friends for MUCH cheaper! 5. Go to school events! Show school spirit! Most of it is free!

    Bang for the buck

Honestly, USM is not the cheapest school, but it's not the most expensive either. We really do get great opportunities here. If students want more, they should expect to pay more.

    Am enjoying being here

It's hard not to make friends here unless you NEVER leave your room! The campus is so diverse and there is something here for everyone!

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much from my professors at this school! Most of them are extremely passionate about the subject, so they give you knowledge you won't get in a cookie cutter class.

Great for these types of students

Nursing, Polymer Science, Education, Theatre/Dance, Graphic Design, Business, Social Work

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved on campus in whatever way you can. Also, if possible, it would be a good idea to live on campus at least your first year because when you live off campus you miss out on a lot ( I would know). Another tip is to shop around for your books and wait until you have an actual assignment in a particular textbook because I have had several courses where I bought the book (even if the professor said I would need it) and I did not even open it the whole semester. Save money where you can!

    Bang for the buck

Southern Miss is pretty affordable, especially if you are in state. There are lots of scholarships available, as well as financial aid through loans and grants. It is one of the cheapest public universities in the state, while still providing a quality education to the students.

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying my time at USM because I have found my niche. It is easy to find your place there because there are so many opportunities to make friends and get involved, whether it is throught intramural sports, clubs, sororities/fraternities, student leadership, or community involvement. I personally met most of my friends either in the dorm, in my classes, through intramurals, at church, or in clubs. There are football/baseball/volleyball/soccer/basketball and practically any other sport that you can attend (and being a student you get in free, which is nice). There are also plays or recitals you can go see. Southern has a wonderful performing arts program. I am not even really big into theatre but I enjoy going to the performances.

    Am learning a lot

I am a nursing student and have found that while the classes are challenging, I have learned a lot and feel I am getting a quality education. If you plan on pursuing a career in nursing, I would definately recommend Southern Miss because they do a great job on centering their information around evidence-based research. Also, most of the clinical instructors currently work in a hospital so they are up to date on changes or different ways of doing things that you may not learn from a text book. They also have a simulation lab as well as several local hospitals and nursing homes that the student gets first hand experience in. Even if you are not a nursing student, I would recommend Southern. I completed my first two years of undergrad at USM, covering the core courses in English, Sociology, Science, Mathmatics, Computer, and History. There is not a class that I did not learn a great deal in. The professors that I have had are easy to talk to as well as well prepared for class. They actually teach you something instead of handing you busy work.

I am enjoying being here. The Freshmen Eagle Walk Week was great. I had a great time. There is a lot of things on campus that you can get involved in.

    Am learning a lot

I am in my freshman year at USM majoring in Forensic Science: Chemistry and I have learned a lot so far. There are many places you can go to for help. So you should not have any excuse of why you are failing classes, when you are offered free help.

Great for these types of students

This school is great if you are planning on a career in either music (of any type!) or polymer science.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your applications in for the Luckyday and Leadership scholarships and be sure that you read all the requirements! They are both a great asset to have in paying for your schooling (and they provide great perks too).

    Bang for the buck

Out of all the schools I was researching, Southern was definitely the most cost efficient! My tuition is under $8000 a semester!

    Will enjoy being here

USM has a beautiful campus, and there's always something to do. Not to mention the fact that Hattiesburg is the quintessential college town; it's big enough to offer plenty, but still has a small town feel in areas.

    Will learn a lot

The professors at USM are some of the beast in the country. They genuinely care about offering their students the best possible education they can recieve.

    Tips for prospective students

Prepare yourself mentally for the work and do not over work yourself. Take it all in before you jump head first into anything.

    Bang for the buck

Living on campus is costly but there are many other colleges that cost way more. I don't like how they give you dining dollars dollar for dollar. I think there should be some special package or deal.

    Am enjoying being here

I love my school. I made a great choice when I chose this diverse college in a diverse community. There are a lot of things to get into. We have a wide range of sports to suit almost everyone. Come get involved. Great college with a lot of friendly faces.

    Am learning a lot

The classes challenges your thinking and you have to be well prepared. I find myself frequently putting what I have learned to use in my everyday life even when it's something simple as if a plant is a monocot or dicot.

    Clubs and Activities

Nothing but fraternities and sororities. Nothing worthwile.

    What to do for fun

    Nothing.

    Food and Dining

The food is okay, but there are too many people in the cafeteria all the time.

    Dorm Life

I've never lived here, so I couldn't tell you.

    Academic Rigor

Most of the departments, especially the math department, the art department, and some of the science departments will overwork students here. It's too rigorous. That is not a good thing.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to teach at a secondary school, this university is okay. If you want a career, go somewhere else.

    In three sentences

I honestly don't feel like my hard work amounts to much at this university. One reason is that the majority of instructors here aren't very good at teaching anything to the students. Another reason is that the advisers pressure you to choose a major, even if it doesn't prepare you for the career you want to have.

Great for these types of students

USM is great for everyone and is welcoming for everyone. For people who do not want a very large college, USM has a great size of about 13000 students. Also for art majors, USM has an excellent and accredited art department. They also have great therapeutic recreation, polymer science, nursing, and business departments. Anyone who would love to travel abroad, USM offers several study abroad programs. Also, for students wanting to join an honors college, USM's honor's college provides small classes and travel opportunities.

    Tips for prospective students

The campus is small and there is a police escort service at night so feel free to schedule classes with only 15 minutes between and night classes. Also, definitely read your textbooks and look in your syllabus. Unlike high school, teachers do not have to tell you about an assignment, they expect you to know to do it. Get involved in student activities because they are a great way to get to meet people. Your adviser is very smart, but always double check everything after being advised for classes because they may make a mistake.

    Bang for the buck

USM is a state school so the tuition is relatively low compared to others. They have a great academic program and prove that you can get an excellent education without paying an Ivy League price. In 2010 dorms ranged from 1500 to 2500 depending on whether the room was single or double, or community or private bath. I considered this a very good price because everything's included, internet, cable, water, heat, and even laundry. The basic meal plan includes all you eat at the cafeteria called the Fresh Food Co. Also with your tuition you receive free entry into sporting events and use of the Payne Center.

    Am enjoying being here

Southern Miss has a lot to offer and is a very positive environment. There is a wide variety of people so everyone will find friends. They have numerous honor societies, special interest groups, community service groups, religious groups, and other groups to join. They also have very active sororities and fraternities that are very friendly, work together, do not have rival sororities and fraternities, and do not exclude non-Greek students from activities. USM also has very many intramural sports along with a great gym called the Payne Center which offers classes ranging from aerobics and Zumba to yoga and Pilates, a weight center, basketball and tennis courts, a walking track, and a pool. The campus is small and it's very easy to walk to classes and back to dorms.

    Am learning a lot

All of my teachers at Southern have extensive knowledge in their field of study. Several of them have written books, my history teacher was featured on history channel, my Anatomy and Physiology teacher wrote our textbook, and one of the therapeutic recreation teachers is the former president of therapeutic recreation's national organization called ATRA. Also the teachers are very willing to help students and all of mine have been very welcoming during their office hours to discuss any questions.

    Clubs and Activities

there are so many clubs that are exceedingly diverse, from the academic clubs to feminist clubs and even anime clubs.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the rose garden is very beautiful, and it is rumored that there is a $1000 fine for picking one of them. also, there is a bridge over a pond that people like to get professional photos taken. people say that new couples should never go to breakup bridge, named so because people are rumored to break up after spending time on the bridge.

    Bang for the buck

the education i am receiving from usm is rigorous (i got accepted to the school of nursing), and they expect a lot from their students. i know i will appreciate the effort my teachers put into educating us. but it all depends on what avenue of study you want to pursue. an art history degree, for example, will not get you as far as a bachelor's in nursing.

    What to do for fun

during football season, usm is a huge tailgating community. tents are set up all over campus, and bands come play all day every home game. the whole city of hattiesburg loves usm football season. there are also many programs set up by the student life committee including rec sports, and a variety of other programs.

    Food and Dining

the food on campus is good, but it depends on where you go to eat. the commons does not have very delicious food, however the powerhouse serves some killer chicken tender baskets, along with other great dishes.

    Dorm Life

i have never lived on campus at usm, but i have had many friends who have lived there, both in the dorms and at the greek life houses, and they all have enjoyed staying there.

    Academic Rigor

the academic rigor of the courses taught at usm all depends on the type of class you are taking. an advanced organic chemistry class will obviously require much more brainpower than an art appreciation class. many of the different colleges (business, health, etc) are gaining national rankings, so it all depends on the degree plan chosen.

    Tips for prospective students

check around the other bookstores in town besides the main bookstore on campus, barnes and noble, when buying textbooks. there are much better prices off-campus. search for scholarships. usm offers many academic, degree-specific, and other types of foundation scholarships.

    In three sentences

my university has many very talented and intelligent professors and has been growing by leaps and bounds even since i have been attending there since the fall of 2010. new programs are being implemented to enhance learning and aiding students in finding out the way in which they learn, which i have never seen at another college. usm always seems to find ways to better the college.

    What to do for fun

The best things to do for fun is to go to the gym, join a club, and hang out in the lounge and play a little pool.

    Food and Dining

The only place I ate at was the cafe. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet for only $7.99. If you have nice friends, they'll swipe you in for a free meal. The Power House, Chik-Fil-a, Subway, Stone's Throw, Starbucks, and Einstein Bros. are delicious but kind of pricey.

    Dorm Life

I didn't stay on campus, but my friends who did, they said that it was pretty decent. The walls are kind of thin, but bearable. There were a lot of huge roaches in there, so if you're not a roach person keep a shoe and a can of Raid very close.

    Academic Rigor

There was only 1 class I really had trouble with. Make sure you ask any questions you have (even ones you think are dumb). Make sure you get a full understanding before you walk out of the classroom.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of your work. Start your homework AS SOON AS YOU GET IT! Stay with a good crowd of people that you actually can trust with your life. Be involved with extracurricular activities, and don't park in faculty & staff, commuters, or residents parking lots without a decal. Tickets are no joke.

    In three sentences

My experience with USM wasn't all that great being that I was a commuter. Half of the time, it was pretty boring, but as far as classes most teachers are cool. The school was clean looking in the daytime, but at night roaches were everywhere, and it looked dingy and filthy.

I have not eaten much on campus. I have eaten in the cafeteria once on campus. They seemed to offer many different food options for the diverse student population.

    Dorm Life

Unfortunately, I am not applicable to give my opinion on the dorm life because I have not had to stay in a dorm while attending USM.

    Academic Rigor

The rigor of the work at USM is slightly more than required from a junior college or community college. Students are expected to be responsible for their own work and projects and typically aren't given second chances to complete the work.

    Tips for prospective students

New/Transfer students need to stay on top of their degree plan to be sure to take the courses best suited for each semester because some courses are not offered every semester and can lead to a student falling behind in his/her degree plan.

    In three sentences

The University of Southern Mississippi offers a well rounded education for lively high school graduates to older adults seeking to further their education. The University offers many activities that all students no matter the age, major, or Fraternity/Sorority can attend. Overall, USM is a great school to attend for furthering a person's education and for creating a well rounded individual through providing interactive events/activities for him/her to participate in at school.

    Greek Life

Southern is very involved in Greek life! I definitely recommend! Offers plenty of help with school and rack up on hours of community service. Good organization to be in to make life long friends and to have fun as well!

    What to do for fun

If you like to go out and party, there are fun bars and clubs! If you are a freshman, the frat house is the way to go. Dancing and awesome Dj, definitely a must-go! When you get tired of partying hard all the time my personal favorite is the gold pub. It's more relaxed with live bands and a porch area to hang out on.

    Food and Dining

Hattiesburg has endless places to eat. Plaid Rhino is one really good place with generous student discounts! And a free game room while you wait for food! Mugshots also does special for students on Tuesdays!

    Dorm Life

I live off campus, but all my friends live on campus. Century Park dorms are the best... however they are really strict and annoying. McCarty is the way to go if you are a guy. You do not want Jones or Wilbur Hall!

    Academic Rigor

This all depends on what teachers you take and what your major is. Yes, the classes are more difficult than high school, so don't think you're just going to wing it, not going to happen. However, there are plenty of tutor and writing centers to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be lazy first semester just because you can! I made the mistake of getting used to sleeping in and taking late classes. Mistake! you want to reserve most of the evening to do schoolwork, not just now waking up and going to classes!

    In three sentences

The college is very welcoming to the transition from high school to college life. It has so many groups and activities to be involved in, so there is something for everyone. It is also only a square mile radius so it is fairly easy to walk to classes.

    Bang for the buck

I believe the school is worth every penny because it might break someone pockets just a little but once you get on campus everything is free. There is no hassle in buying season tickets or worrying about how to eat at places on campus that is not the cafeteria.

    What to do for fun

There are many things to do for fun, such as, going to the gym, being apart of an organization/fraternity/sorority, exploring the campuses arcade and game rooms, going to the school's ball games, or just meeting new people and socializing.

    Food and Dining

The dining facilities are great there are many places to choose from on campus for people with different taste in food. One is not subjected to the same thing everyday like some campuses.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is okay, you will have a curfew but that helps you focus more on school rather than partying and staying out too late.

    Academic Rigor

It's important to be in good academic standing because it opens opportunities for various scholarships and organizations to be apart of.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

USM is very concerned with personal safety. There are telephones all around campus in case after studying late at night at the library you want a university police escort to walk you back to your dorm. There have been several accounts of theft, but none involving any harm to anyone.

    Greek Life

Greek life is extremely important to Southern Miss. I can't speak for them too much for I am not currently involved in a sorority, however, I do plan on rushing this year because it seems very fun and fulfilling.

    Clubs and Activities

There are SO many different options on campus, from Ultimate Frisbee to our very own Quidditch team, USM is a place for anyone and everyone.

Great for these types of students

USM is great for social butterflies and people who love to volunteer.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year, the freshman have a competition where they paint the Eagle Walk that our football players walk through to get to the field. Everyone gets out their old clothes to rub around in gold paint and try to cover their designated square the fastest. It is definitely an experience to remember!

    Bang for the buck

USM is in a nice town, the professors seem to actually care, and the array of people who attend is astounding.

    What to do for fun

The theatre department puts on about 3 productions a semester, which are always amazing. We have so many clubs that you would be hard-pressed to not find one you are interested in. The Student Activities Council is also constantly putting together events, such as crawfish boils and concerts on the grounds.

    Food and Dining

On campus is our main cafeteria, the Fresh Food Company, which is spectacular for college kids. Downsides would be small selections on weekends and the fact it only stays open until 8 p.m. However, we also have a Subway, Chic-fil-a, and A Stone's Throw, a fast food restaurant in the middle of the freshman quad which is open late into the night.

    Dorm Life

I can only speak for Century Park, but I found dorm life very impressive. There are RA's on every floor who plan events every couple weeks so all the students can get together and have fun or just chat. The maintenance workers are always fast and efficient if there ever is a problem with your room.

    Academic Rigor

USM offers very challenging classes, and speaking as an Honors College student, that means something. The Honors classes are very challenging and not something to take lightly. However, some general education classes are what some call easy A's.

    Tips for prospective students

Do NOT be a dorm rat! Take advantage of every opportunity to get involved and to meet people. Even in the classes you are excelling in, take the time to visit your professors during office hours and get to know them on a personal level.

    In three sentences

USM has a small, beautiful campus. Its low faculty to student ratio is ideal for those who require a little more attention. USM offers tons of extracurricular opportunities, which allows for everyone to find their own little niche.

    What to do for fun

The school holds various events for students throughout the year and Hardy Street is lined with many locations to have fun and relax.

    Food and Dining

Some days the food is ok and other days your best option may be a salad and fruit. Those who live on campus automatically get extra money to buy food at on-campus restaurants and snack stands.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are pretty decent and the staff encourage interaction among residence and are very friendly and helpful.

    Academic Rigor

My rating here may be slightly obscured by the fact that I am a nursing major, and, before I was a nursing major, I was a biology major. Both of these majors are pretty challenging and rigorous.

I would, also, advise you to get to know your instructors in case you need them for recommendation letters or internships. Lastly, make a couple of friends to help ease the stress that can be associated with college.

Every year during homecoming week there is a competition between different organizations on campus and one event is the Fountain Sit. At the center of campus is a beautiful fountain and one member from each team has to sit in the fountain and the one to last the longest is the winner! Last year the winner and runner up were in there for almost 6 hours! Centennial Lawn is a great place to relax or lay out on a sunny day. It is also the location for pep rallies! Football games are always packed! Before each home game, the football team, marching band, Dixie Darlings (amazing dance team), and cheerleaders walk down the Eagle Walk which takes them through campus to be cheered on by all the tailgaters!

    Bang for the buck

This is a public university, and you definitely get what you pay for when you take advantage of everything the campus has to offer.

    What to do for fun

There are many events on campus that are hosted by the cafeteria or student organizations, like craw fish boils, pep rallies, parties, music events, educational seminars, and even game shows! It seems like EVERY day there is something happening on campus. Hattiesburg also has a variety of activities to do. There are many restaurants, laser tag, bowling, a movie theater, downtown festivals, and more. USM is never lacking fun.

    Food and Dining

There are many food choices, from two cafeterias to restaurants on campus. The meal plan allows you to eat at either cafeteria which include a wide variety of food to choose, and Bonus Bucks allow you to eat at the restaurants. The Fresh (main cafeteria) is a popular spot to socialize and also hosts different late night events throughout the year. Every once in a while there is nothing substantial to eat, and the Fresh closes at 8 pm making it inconvenient for night class students.

    Dorm Life

I am entering my sophomore year and living in a dorm just like I did freshman year. Living in the dorm exposes you to everything the campus has to offer as well as sets you up to meet new people to hang out with in or out of the dorm. The dorms are clean and well maintained. They are extremely safe anytime and secured by policemen at night. Changing roommates is a simple process, and the RA and Residence Life Office are easy to access if needed.

    Academic Rigor

First off, I am in the Honors College at USM and am required to take some honors courses each semester. I can honestly say my regular courses were very challenging as well as my honors courses. Study groups are great to have and really do help you learn the material better than if you were studying alone. The homework helps you understand and can often be the deciding factor of your letter grade; make sure to do it all.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you own a great pair of tennis shoes because you will most likely walk to all your classes unless you commute. Bring a rain jacket and rain boots, but also carry an umbrella in your backpack; there are surprise showers all the time. Stay in town during the weekends because there is always something fun to do. Utilize the library; it's my best friend. Get involved and learn about the many traditions and history of USM. You only get out of school what you put into it, so give it your all!

    In three sentences

The campus is small but makes me feel at home within its close community. The flora on campus and the hospitable people calm me between my daily classes that challenge me. The organizations on campus give ample opportunity to those that seek it, and the family I have made here inspire me every day to leave USM better than I found it.

For college kids, food is something that becomes a priority! On the campus of USM, there are many different options for food. The main attraction is the Fresh, which is the cafeteria in the middle of campus. You are allowed to go in several times a day and whatever and however much food you want to. This is also great for socializing and meeting new people as well. Another place to get food would be the Powerhouse, the Agora, Einstein Bagels and Co., Seymour's (chick-fil-a and subway), and Stone's Throw. These are all quick restaurant places to grab some food and keep going. And finally, there is Hillcrest which is the sorority girl's dorms but it is a small cafeteria with great food.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life on campus is good. Century Park being the nicest dorms to McCarty, then down to Hillcrest, Freshman Quad, Hickman, and more. I have enjoyed staying in the dorms on campus because this was a great way to get to know new people and have fun times together!

If you like to sleep in, you can schedule all your classes to be in the afternoon into the night. So far, I have enjoyed my classes. Although I have struggles in a couple of them, I have been able to talk to my professor and get help. The professors are understanding and are there to help you. Overall, the academic part of USM is great.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to get involved with activities on campus. There are so many awesome opportunities that you can become part of, from Greek Life to intramural sports, and so much more. Also, use your resources; the library is open late, ask for help, ask for direction, and be sure to study hard.

Painting the Little Rock in front of the Alumni House with a school spirit enfused saying such as Rise To The Top. Southern Mississippi To The Top is the catch all phrase around campus. It is derived from the fight song of the same name. It is often shortened to SMTTT! and almost every student knows that when someone says Southern Miss! the correct response is To The Top! The Rock- The stadium nickname. The original stadium was built by the football players and coaches back in the early 1900s for training and in exchange for scholarship money. The coaches and players actually lived in a dorm on the east side wall of the stadium. The windows are still visible to this day. The Eagle Walk- the gold road to the east of the stadium which the football players, coaches, and band parade down. Each fall the Freshman Class participates in something called Painting the Eaglewalk which gives the eagle walk a new coat of gold paint for the upcoming season. The university is steeped in tradition nestled in the town of Hattiesburg the only way to fully understand all of these and more traditions is to visit the campus.

    Bang for the buck

Modify your dining plan to suit your needs. Apply for every scholarship possible (the university is very generous with scholarship money). Utilize student and Eagle Club discounts around the city.

Friday Night at the Fountain. The pep rally every Friday before each home game which displays the Golden Eagle Pride. The different Greek Life and organizational events that are sponsored around campus bring joy to the campus. The Payne Center offers a multitude of different programs from yoga to hiking. Intramurals are always a huge hit around campus. The Longleaf Trace is located behind Century Park and is a great place to bike or run. The city of Hattieburg offers a multitude of best kept secret events such as outdoor lawn movies, festivals, and events around the city. Paul B Johnson State Park is a beautiful park along a lake south of the city. Cabin rentals are relatively cheap and makes for a great weekend getaway.

    Food and Dining

The University's premier dining hall is the Fresh Food Company- a buffet style cafeteria with multiple different areas to eat. It is very tasty on certain days. Pizza and the Smart or health line will never disappoint. Hillcrest Dormitory has its own small cafeteria which is accessible to every student on campus. This is the best place to eat on campus. Often, the menu consists of delicious home cooked comfort food including fried okra, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and other southern favorites The Agora consists of two restaurants in the international studies building. The restaurants change from year to year. This past year the Agora had Einstein Brothers Bagle Company and a very good counter service Mexican restaurant. Seymour's diner consists of Subway and Chic Fil A which can be bought with the Dining dollars on any meal plan. Great place to get away from the Fresh.

    Dorm Life

AVOID THE FRESHMAN QUAD. These are the worst dorms on campus. They are the oldest and consist of community style bathrooms. Hillcrest is the sorority and female overflow housing. Mississippi and Hattiesburg Halls are the Female and Male upperclass dorms respectively. They are apartment style with three rooms (six people) sharing one bathroom with a common area. McCarty Hall is named after one of the University's most famous benefactors and houses the football team and overflow male housing. The honors courses will both challenge and amaze you with small interactive classes capped at less than fifteen students each.

    Tips for prospective students

In addition, there are courses called active learning courses that will travel to places such as New York City, San Francisco, Walt Disney World, and Washington DC. Give the university a chance, the courses will interest you, the campus life will amaze you, and best of all- it will always feel like home. Avoid the Fresh Food Company, the cafeteria on campus, at high traffic parts of the day. Take advantage of the surrounding area from Paul B. Johnson State Park, to the various rivers, to downtown Hattiesburg and the areas of Oak Grove and Petal- you will always find something to do each and every weekend.

    In three sentences

There are many places to eat on USM's campus. The Fresh Food Company is the basic cafeteria, which consists of many different selections of food that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food variation is very good at USM.

Inside of the Century Park gated community is a the Learning Center, which houses a convenience store that has all the necessities for hygiene, also a wide selection of different meals, desserts, and even smoothies. Also located in the Learning Center are well furnished rooms that can be used for studying or hanging out with friends. Each dorm has their own private bathroom. Also, location of a college can make a large difference, depending on your background. Be open to suggestions and to new things, as you never know what might make you change your mind on your future. Bang for the buck

This school is offering essentially the same program that I was going to go to Watkins College in Nashville for, only about $17k cheaper. Off campus, in-state tuition (with fees) amounts to about $3,300, which isn't bad. In fact, it's a steal for my film degree I'm so ready to get.

    What to do for fun

There's always something going on on campus. There's a welcome week that's usually themed. You're given a ticket and you go to all these events over the course of a week. Your ticket is stamped, and you turn it in, and you're eligible to win cool stuff, like an iPad, a nook, or this year they're giving away stuff signed by the Duck Dynasty guys.

    Food and Dining

There's a convenient cafe on campus in the main building that has very well, low-priced meals. As of this year, you're alloted $5 per hour you take that you can use towards meals in the cafe, so essentially you're getting free food. But note, you only get about $60, so don't go on a feeding frenzy your first day.

    Dorm Life

    There are no dorms.

    Academic Rigor

The learning atmosphere is awesome. The classes aren't full, but aren't empty either. I'd amount the teacher to student ratio about 1:10, which is pretty good for a public university.

    Tips for prospective students

Learn where your classrooms are before you come to class. Come a day early, and walk the campus. It isn't a large campus, so don't fret. The buildings aren't exactly labeled the best. Financial aid workers are a little odd. They come off as cold, but don't take it to heart. They are willing to help and actually turn out to be fairly friendly.

    Bang for the buck

Wish I had transferred sooner, definitely more bang for the buck.

    What to do for fun

The campus hosts numerous events and activities for the diverse student body to participate in. The small town of Hattiesburg offers a little bit of everything for a fun and active social life.

    Food and Dining

Healthy options are available in abundance. The quality of the food and pricing is exceptional.

    Dorm Life

From what I've heard there have not been any real complaints. There are plenty of off campus (nearby) apartments.

    Academic Rigor

USM may not have the big reputation that some of the other nearby schools have but they certainly deserve and earn the recognition for their unwavering engagement in their students success. USM really does provide a quality education.

    Tips for prospective students

If you have any questions about degree plans, classes, or anything related to the school don't hesitate to ask: if the person you ask doesn't know they'll find out or point you in the right direction. Go to class, the small class sizes make for a genuinely vital and rewarding experience because you won't be lost in the masses. Talk with fellow students early on in the semester, don't wait until the end when it's finals week because you'll find out who you've missed getting to know and possibly study with.

    In three sentences

This university is a great place for students wanting a one-on-one kind of feel to the classroom, learning experience college offers. The staff and faculty are always willing to help and really make their students feel welcomed and valued. USM offers a wide range of programs and their commitment to a quality education really shines through in their innovation for student success.

    Campus Safety

I feel very safe on campus. If you ever need an escort at night when you do not feel comfortable walking alone, the campus police are only a phone call away! The dorms are well protected and big events always have security.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

During the Golden Eagle Welcome Week for freshman, there is the painting of the Eagle Walk! The Eagle walk is a tunnel/road that goes underneath the stadium bleachers. The freshman cover themselves in gold paint and paint the road with their bodies. It is messy, but fun!

    Bang for the buck

I think for the price of USM, it is definitely worth it! Many people want to go to big college, but can't afford it. Southern Miss would be a perfect option because it has a big university feel to it, but only has about 18,000 students.

    What to do for fun

There is plenty of stuff to do on campus! Depending on your major, you will either have a lot of free time, or not much at all. The SMAC (Southern Miss Activities Council) is always having something to do, especially during football season! There are carnivals, pep rallies, fundraisers, and many other things you can do on campus in your free time. There is a walking trail through the heart of campus bordering the recreational building. At the Rec Center you can jog, play racquetball, swim, and much more. There is always something to do on campus and in Hattiesburg.

    Food and Dining

The food can be really good on some days and not so good on the others. The good thing is you have plenty of options! In the Fresh, which is the cafeteria, you have many options like salad, the grill, more homemade foods, asian, desserts, etc. There are other food options on campus such as a Mexican food place, Chik-fil-a, Subway, Starbucks, etc. Overall the food is good.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life really is not to bad! The security is strong, so it is a very safe environment. You have to check in when you enter the buildings. At night there is a security officer in every dorm and patrols regularly. Some dorms are a little noisier than some, but it is not terrible.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be hard or easy depending on the teacher. In most classes you will have a little homework, but it is nothing you can't handle.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to register for your classes by the deadline, or else classes will fill up. Have your textbooks ordered by the time school starts because it is embarrassing going to your class without your books.

    In three sentences

It is a great school and there are many opportunities there! The faculty and students are wonderful and the school has a very welcoming atmosphere. At Southern Miss, you are not just a face in the crowd or a number, you matter!

Open campus. People from the surrounding area can easily drive or walk onto campus. Case in point, we actually had a bank robber run onto campus because he knew it was open and would be harder to find him.

    Greek Life

    Sorority life is expanding.

    Clubs and Activities

Good variety. Can even start clubs if your interests are not represented.

Great for these types of students

    Liberal Arts Students.

Painting the Eagle Walk. Basically, watch the freshman roll around in yellow paint under the stadium. Ridiculous.

    Food and Dining

Do not eat at the Fresh Food Company, if it can be helped.

    Dorm Life

The least expensive dorms on campus were built in the '50s/60s. They don't do a good job of upkeep and would rather tear them so they can build new ones and charge outrageous prices.

    Academic Rigor

    Science department is hard!!!

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to go to medical school, go somewhere else. Do not major in either Biological Sciences or Medical Technology. Both departments are not helpful. This school has jerked me and other students around quite a bit in the years that I have been here. Hardly anyone I know has anything positive to say about this school. They are not in a good financial position here, but they are doing construction like crazy. Most of your money will go to football rather than your education. Living off campus is no cheaper than living on, even though the dorms are crazy overpriced.

    In three sentences

Do not major in science here. The teachers are ridiculously hard in the classroom and with some of their policies. I had a teacher that wouldn't even excuse a trip to the emergency room!

We have emergency phones, like, every two feet. The police station is on campus and they patrol periodically. You can also call for an escort if you ever feel endangered at night around campus.

Great for these types of students

ARTS! If you're gonna' do art, go to USM! The professors are amazing, challenging and genuinely interested in your success!

    What to do for fun

Get involved in everything! There are so many clubs and great opportunities at USM! Get in GEWW crew, become an ambassador, do all the dorky SMAC activities!!! They're here for us! :)

    Food and Dining

Lower your meal plan to get more bonus bucks and dine around campus. The Fresh has its days but really isn't worth the extra money for meal swipes.

    Dorm Life

My dorm is beautiful. Construction around campus makes the view a little awkward, but Century Park is lovely. The rules are strict, which pushes people to move out - understandable. From what I hear the quad is pretty awful as far as living accommodations. I think the suites are the way to go; they're more central to campus anyway. CP is way out of the way.

    Academic Rigor

I'm a graphic design major, and it's hard. - but I'm learning a lot! If you're in for a challenge and want to major in the arts, USM is perfect. - and polymers. Anything else, good luck.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let your friends tell you that school pride is lame. The greatest thing about this campus is the excitement and pride that can be felt all around during game season. - and if you can gather up some friends and get an apartment, buying your own groceries and going out yourself will save money from the awful expenditure that is the dreaded meal plan. Oh my goodness! DO NOT PARK WHERE YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO! They WILL get you. The parking management is horrible on campus, and your charges will rack up like nobody's business!

    In three sentences

USM is a beautiful and proud campus. Hattiesburg is a little uneventful and can really only offer food - lots and lots of food. If you're looking for arts - visual, music, theatre, dance, etc - you're in the right place.

If there's not a club that interest you, create one! That's right, create one! USM allow students to create clubs that suite that student's or groups' needs and/or wants

    Bang for the buck

To get your BANG FOR THE BUCK you must attend any athletic event, football preferably. The entire day, literally, is filled with nothing but FUN, FOOD, and FRIENDS!

    What to do for fun

There are a range of things to do for fun. From sports to art, USM makes sure there is never a dull moment.

    Food and Dining

The food served is amazing. The cooks go beyond measures to make sure the food is always hot, fresh, and delicious! They will even prepare a dish your taste, upon request.

    Tips for prospective students

The best tip I can give to prospective students is to participate in events that USM host. The school does a phenomenal job at hosting events open, not only to students, but the public, as well. This gives all the oppurtunity to see what the school has to offer.

    In three sentences

The University of Southern Mississippi is definitely an amazing school to attend. It has tons of excitement to offer, as well as education. One can't go wrong with attending school here.

    Food and Dining

There are numerous places to eat on campus. For instance, there is the fresh that has multiple kinds of food all day long. There is also Chick-fil-a, Subway, Einstein Bagels, Tortilla Fresca, The Powerhouse, and A Stone's Throw. Einstein Bagels is your typical bagel shop that serves breakfast and lunch foods. Tortilla Fresca is a Mexican style restaurant with burritos, quesadillas, etc. The Powerhouse is more of a sit down restaurant with more home-cooked meals. A Stone's Throw has hamburgers, chicken tenders, and other ball park foods.

    Dorm Life

My freshman year, I moved Century Park which is probably the safest place to be in Hattiesburg. You had to swipe your student I.D. numerous times before entering into the building. Apart from the security, the residence halls were very clean and comfortable. Each room had its own bathroom that you and your roommate would share. I was very satisfied with the dorm life at Southern Miss.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are very important to me. The programs here at Southern Miss push me to do my very best. I love the environment of the classrooms. The student-to-teacher ratio is what helps me the most. It gives every student the opportunity to excel in their major.

    In three sentences

The University of Southern Mississippi is a home away from home. I love being able to have a one-on-one relationship with my teachers and classes. The environment of the campus pushes me to the top.

There is always something fun to do in Hattiesburg! Whether it's seeing a movie, playing lazer tag, going dancing or to a concert, and there is always some event happening on campus.

    Dorm Life

At least freshman year I would recommend staying in a dorm. It is a great way to meet new people, and it creates a great sense of community among you and your peers.

    Academic Rigor

The school stresses the importance of academics (after all, that is the main reason we're here), and staff members are willing to work with you. An important concept is to simply communicate with your professors, study, and everything will go smoothly.

    Tips for prospective students

You must love your school and be willing to cheer and chant at every sporting event. Everyone is always friendly because that's just the way we roll in the south. Don't be afraid to meet new people, try new things, and get involved!

    In three sentences

The campus is beautiful, and right in the middle of Hattiesburg which provides easy access to almost every store and restaurant imaginable. It is a great academic school, but there are always exciting events happening every day. Southern Miss to the top!

    What to do for fun

I am a mom, so I do not have much fun at the university. I dedicate 100% of my schooling to work. However, there are a lot of things to do for traditional students, so I think you'll find there is a little something for everyone.

    Food and Dining

I wish the Gulf Park Campus had the amazing food and dining area that the main campus has. The smaller campus has a caf©, but the main campus goes all out.

    Dorm Life

I am not a student at the main campus, so I cannot comment on this question.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what course and professor you have, the university can be a breeze, but it can also be extremely rigorous. Take it strides. Do not let yourself get overwhelmed.

    Tips for prospective students

STUDY! Do not wait until the last minute for ANYTHING. You may think just because you are very intelligent and your courses are only 100 or 200 level courses that you can just slip on by and you CANNOT. Each class is important, even the ones you do not think are important. Be honest with your professors. Stay in contact with them and interact with them.

    In three sentences

The Gulf Park Campus has a different teaching style than that of its larger counterpart in Hattiesburg. The professors seem to care a great bit more about their students than the larger campus. Overall, I have had a good experience with classes and professors at USM.

    Great Greek Life Department!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

It is tradition to take photos on the tree outside Kenard Washington your freshman year, and in the administrative building fountain on your graduation date. It is also tradition that whomever you walk across the Lake Byron bridge with is the person you will spend the rest of your life with. Just don't steal a rose from the rose garden, if you get caught, those will cost you $500 per bloom, and most likely a trip to jail.

    What to do for fun

There is always something to do! If you get into campus activities such as the Greek system, you will always have something to do and someone to do it with.

    Food and Dining

I have gluten and dairy allergies; they assigned me my own chef to make sure my dietary needs are met.

I have never once felt threatened on this campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and things to join I can't even begin to list them all. I just suggest looking up the list on the school website and joining a couple. Find out which interest you and stick with those. You can make a lot of great friends like this.

Great for these types of students

USM is great for people in the South with progressive thinking. Don't get me wrong: you are still in the deep south. However, it is more tolerant of people with different lifestyles, backgrounds, and ethnicity's than say Oxford or Starkville.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every fall the freshmen get together during the first week and paint the Golden Eagle Walk golden. It is exciting and interesting and a memory that will never be forgotten.

    Bang for the buck

It's worth the money. The education is great, as are the teachers.

    What to do for fun

There are a couple bars in Hattiesburg that are pretty fun if that's your thing. If not, get involved on campus. I know it's cheesy, but it's true. Intramural sports are a good way to have fun and they aren't all focused around extreme athletic ability. For example, my bowling league memories are some of the best memories I have. The Greek life is active. There are also a lot of clubs and organizations that meet often and do fun stuff together, but that depends on what you are interested in.

    Food and Dining

The Fresh is a no. The food is not good at all. Your best bet is to max out on bonus bucks and spend your life in Seymours and A Stone's Throw. Good luck.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life can be kind of strict but in the long run the rules do make it safer for you. Just make sure you check out the dorms ahead of time to decide which one works best for you because they are all quite different.

    Academic Rigor

I have been academically challenged without drowning and that was the goal. I have been pushed to the brink, but there are always people and resources to help bring you back. It's like Hogwarts in the sense that help is always given to those who ask for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be too stressed. It's actually quite fun once you're here. Live up GEWW because it doesn't happen twice and it's really a lot of fun if you just let yourself enjoy it. Other than that, be open to diversity and willing to work hard and you'll succeed. Note: the diversity is more than just skin tone and race, it's also the many different personalities and beliefs.

    In three sentences

The school offers a wide range of majors and classes. Most the teachers are interesting and want to see you succeed. The school spirit for sports could use a little work, but then again, so could the sports departments.
