Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for you if you are very career driven. They have programs that are catered for individual career needs, which is awesome. The social life here is amazing as well, with lots of dances and activities to get involved in on a weekly basis. There are also several clubs that are definitely worth looking into, especially if you enjoy sports or the outdoors.
Tips for prospective students I would suggest applying for as many scholarships as you can. The U is more expensive than SLCC and USU, and money can get tight really fast if you are paying for everything out of pocket. It would also be good to schedule an appointment with a school advisor as soon as possible when you start. They help a lot when you are new and don't necessarily know what you are doing.
Bang for the buck This school is fairly expensive. However, I feel like the professionalism and experience of the professors is almost enough to make up for it. I would suggest, though, that you try as hard as you can to apply for any scholarships from this school that you are eligible for. I didn't and am really starting to regret it!
Am enjoying being here The U is a very friendly school. The only issue I've had with it has been that I had a little trouble with my freshman interview. The lady that interviewed me seemed to be extremely impatient with the fact that I hadn't decided on a major yet, and rushed through my interview, making me feel like I didn't get the most help I could have. Other than that, like I said, it is a very friendly school.
Am learning a lot I'm very impressed with the way the professors are so willing to help students. I have had several instances in classes where I have not understood the material given, and I'm pleased to say that I have felt totally comfortable in going to my professors and asking them to explain things. One professor in particular stayed after class with me for an hour and a half! They all seem to be very professional and knowledgable.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school has a lot to offer students with outdoor interests (like hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding, just to name a few). If you plan on going to the University of Utah, or are looking at applying there, I would definitely take your outdoor interests into account. The U is also a an amazing school for students interested in medicine.
Tips for prospective students It would be a brilliant idea to look at the clubs and organizations offered at the University of Utah. There are tons of outdoor oriented groups (if that's your thing) that are always looking for new members, but there are lots of other groups to join as well. Also be sure to check out the dorms at the U (and apply for on campus housing as soon as you can... it fills up quickly) because they are really nice (you don't have to share a bathroom with your entire floor), plus you can meet a lot of people.
Bang for the buck I live in-state so I was able to get the in-state tuition rate, which is pretty good. I would say if you live in-state and decide to stay in your state, you definitely get a big bang for the buck.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being here because there is a lot to do when you get bored. It almost seems as though the outdoor activities offered are endless and there is always something to do and there is some nice sight seeing and shopping around town. Another bonus? You get to experience all four seasons to a near extreme here!
Am learning a lot The first year felt like a review for me (in some of my classes). I was, however, able to take classes that fulfilled some of my general education requirements where I did learn new things. The professors were also always trying to find ways to help you get good grades (with study sessions before tests, study guides, and supplemental instruction sessions) :D

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The U is a great place for the out-of-doors loving student. There are lots of awesome hiking and bike trails in the hills behind the University, and we are just miles away from several canyons with numerous world-class ski resorts. There are also many good places for the rock climber or repeller to try his or her skills. The University of Utah is also a really great place for the the student who likes to be involved. There are a TON of clubs and associations to get involved in and the students are very friendly. There are a lot of on-campus activities year round including, but not at all limited to, concerts, Crimson Nights (all night dancing/party extravaganzas held periodically throughout the year), rowdy football games, Redfest (a weeklong concert series), and carnivals.
Tips for prospective students I would find out about all the scholarships you can possibly get. As a partially state-funded school, the U does give out a lot of scholarships, the trick is hunting them down and applying for them. They aren't too hard to find so apply for as many as you can. If you are going to try on campus housing, sign up fast! The rooms fill really quickly! Get involved in a couple of good clubs or associations, they will make your experience at the U so much more rich and fulfilling. ASUU (Associated Students of the University of Utah) is a great place to start! (http://www.asuu.utah.edu/docs/FC_APP_09-10.pdf) Also, get some good walking shoes and break them in! The U of U has a giant campus and some of your classes can get pretty scattered; be ready to walk or even run to your next class!
Bang for the buck I would say that the tuition for the U is pretty reasonable but no one likes to pay for anything, especially school. The great thing is that the U does offer a lot of scholarships, especially for incoming freshman. All in all, with the great professors and innovative teaching styles, I feel like you get a very ivy league education on an almost community college budget at the University of Utah. Also, as a paying student, you gain access to the state-of-the-art library, a great gym and swimming complex, ubiquitous campus high-speed internet, and a lot of other great student resources, not to mention tickets to see a nationally ranked football team!
Am enjoying being here I have really enjoyed gaining my education at the University of Utah; it's seriously one of the best decisions I have ever made. It's a great campus with friendly people and lot of great student programs and I'm glad I made the choice to come here. I lived in the dorms for my first year and really enjoyed the experience I had in close contact with other students and the network it helped me develop. However, coming from a small town, sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed by the shear number of students on campus and in my classes. Sometimes I feel like a very small fish in a huge colligate pond.
Am learning a lot The classes at the U are very learning intensive. The professors aren't just preparing you to pass their tests but are greatly concerned with the real-world applications of their subjects. Professors are excited about their disciplines and are more than willing to take extra time to try and help you understand. All the professors I have had experience with have had fairly convenient office hours when students can come talk to them face-to-face and are eager to communicate through email as well. I feel like all this professor-student interaction has really helped me gain a pretty comprehensive knowledge of the classes I have taken. However, sometimes I feel like it is hard to learn on a very intimate level in the huge, auditorium lecture classes that are the style of many of your undergrad general level classes.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students 1) Apply for scholarships!! You want to spend more time studying and having a social life than figuring out how to pay for school later. 2) For out-of-state: if at all possible, start establishing residency ASAP. Again, not the cheapest school. You'll want that discount. 3) Be prepared to hike; campus is really built into the side of a mountain....if you have classes in different buildings, you spend a good deal of time walking between them. Bikes/scooters/skateboards are another good option, and the campus is set up for you to use those!
Bang for the buck Being an out-of-state student, the tuition is a lot higher than in-state. It's definitely not a cheap school, but classes are fantastic and there's a good social life, plus with your UCard (student ID) you can ride buses and the local train system for free, which is really helpful. Apply for all the scholarships you can!! The school does offer quite a few, and you'll need them.
Am enjoying being here I live off-campus, but I enjoy the campus and the surrounding area. It's beautiful, and there's plenty to do! Football games, Hogle Zoo just around the corner, a great on-campus library....I hear there's good skiing in the winter. Overall, it is really a fun place to be!
Am learning a lot I love my classes here! The professors know what they're talking about and are pretty easily accessible; they like telling you when their office hours are and are pretty friendly. I have e-mailed back and forth with professors when I've had questions, and they are always happy to respond and clear things up. Best of all, lots of options for classes!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students It is a school great for the outdoorsy type of people. You can take classes for credit that are outdoor. For example I am taking an Ice Climbing class next semester, and my boyfriend took a camping class last year.
Tips for prospective students If you are out of state, apply for the Western Undergrad Exchange. Even if you don't get the in-state and a half tuition your first semester, you will most likely get it your second and third and anything helps!
Bang for the buck It is a little expensive, however it is very worth it. The dorms are very nice to live in and the school is very technologically advanced. You can tell the difference from the niceness of this campus compared to a lot of other old schools.
Am enjoying being here I love going to the U of U. It is very close to downtown, so you are a five minute trax stop from a lot of fun things to do. The football games are also very fun!
Am learning a lot I have learned a lot, and the professors are so helpful and nice. I got so sick this past semester and missed class for two and a half weeks. They were all so nice and let me make up tests and papers and quizes. They really understood and want me to do well.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students It is great for various types of students, from the most basic to the most stellar. There are varying opportunities that make college life bearable and even enjoyable
Tips for prospective students Look into the Honors College, see if you are eligible and join. It is a great experience. If you don't know anyone, get on-campus housing. This helps you gain some foothold on a very large campus. Get involved. If you are going to the U orientation you will probably get sick of hearing this but it is HIGHLY recommended. It is very easy to get involved and it will make your experience at this college a 100 times better.
Bang for the buck Certainly I would recommend the U to any prospective students for various reasons. The school is NOT the cheapest education on the block, but it is well worth it, IF you take advantage of all the opportunities. If you are intending on going for a basic education and not pushing yourself to explore new areas, it may not be financially advisable.
Am enjoying being here In addition to the great academics, the school's community offers many options to get out and enjoy the campus and the people. There are many clubs and organizations (I believe if I remember it's close to 500 different organizations). Also, the school's got a great student pep club for sports, called the MUSS (Mighty Ute Student Section). This makes games very enjoyable to attend as a student.
Am learning a lot In my experience at the University of Utah the professors at the University of Utah are all very great at aiding students learn the material and the college in general encourages the students to do their very best. There are many opportunities to both aid and expand yourself, with tutoring programs if you are having trouble, and the Honors College and other jump start programs to challenge yourself further. I would recommend taking advantage of as much as possible at the U, as it is there to help you anyways.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for people who don't mind big campuses and lots of other people. It's minutes away from downtown SLC so if you like the city life this is perfect for you. We're also a huge research facility and not just for science and medicine (although if you're lookin' to go to med school the U is the place to be). On top of that we have a wonderful arts program such as modern dance and ballet, A Capella choir, and a new musical theatre department. We LOVE our sports and rock in football and gymnastics. Basically, the U is big, diverse, absorbs the culture of life, and provides the ultimate college experience both academically and socially.
Tips for prospective students First things first, start early on those scholarship apps because you could end up going all four undergrad years paid for and be able to live in the dorms (which are expensive and I wouldn't suggest doing unless you have scholarship). Look on the web and if you have an idea of what your major will be call an advisor, they'll be happy to talk with you. Also, once you're enrolled don't be afraid to talk to your peers or professors. The relationships you form can be good for study groups, future references, or in my case research opportunities (research is big at the U).
Bang for the buck The U may overall be a tiny bit more expensive than Utah State but not by much. I am living at home (resident) and taking public transportation so all I had to pay for this semester was tuition which was around $3,000 for 14 credit hours. This amount is easy to take care of with scholarships and Financial Aid which the U offers a lot of. Just make sure to check the deadlines! They may be earlier like in February. Those are on the web and they also have departmental scholarships if you've already decided on a major; you just have to talk to your Advisor for more info. Also, as a student I get tons of free resources such as the gym/field-house use, FREE public transportation services, and academic resources such as career services (clean up your resume) or the writing center (edit a paper). Plus on top of that the U is always giving out freebies at events and discounts to restaurants and such. As a college kid free is my favorite word and the U understand that.
Am enjoying being here After getting over the freshman shock I find myself really enjoying the U. The thing that can be most overwhelming is the size. The U is a commuter school with over 30,000 students (including grad students) so it can get somewhat hectic at times, especially parking (I recommend public transportation for that reason). But with that size comes a lot of great opportunities to get involved and meet new people. There are clubs for every interest and they always have fun little fairs at the union patio with music and free food. The U does a great job at making everyone feel welcome and providing opportunities to get the most out of the college experience.
Am learning a lot The University of Utah classes are both academically challenging and realistically applicable. The professors teach in ways that challenge me to think differently and openly relating to the real world. It's actually quite refreshing. Not only am I learning about the subjects but of myself as a student too, like what my needs and learning style are, and where I'm struggling. It can be kind of difficult to get everything out of a professor when you're in a class of 300+ students but they also have TA sessions and tutoring in the library. With all the resources available (for free!) there is no excuse I can't do well in school or reach out for help if I don't understand something. The U is all about student success first and there's plenty of faculty, staff, and peers that passionately aid in that endeavor.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students * People who are interested in graduate school since the U has many opportunities for undergraduate research * People who like to be involved. Your college experience just isn't the same if you don't join something. * People who like to have activities to participate in, such as plays, dances, concerts, or clubs. * People who like to be outdoors. The campus is
Tips for prospective students 1) Go to your professor's office hours. If you are too shy to do that, at least talk to your professors. Most of my opportunities have been made possible because my professors know who I am. 2) Take advantage of the programs the U offers. They offer so much support for undergraduate research, tutoring, and social opportunities. Do some research on the website and find out about programs that may be interesting to you. 3) Learn to navigate the website. Use the A-Z catalog for the best results. 4) Apply to every scholarship you can. Every department has some departmental scholarships, and you can't get them if you don't apply for them. 5) Live at least 1 year in the dorms. They're a great place to meet people, plus being a resident allows you to take part in the events that the resident halls put on (such as free admission to haunted houses or dance parties) 6) Look into the Trax and bus schedules. They will take you anywhere in Salt Lake, and since you're a student, it's free! 7) Figure out the campus shuttles. They're not hard, just make sure you understand when each schedule applies as they run at different times during the day. They're free and great if you don't want to walk. 8) Sign up for everything early. This includes housing, scholarships, classes, or the MUSS (the student sports fan club).
Bang for the buck The U is rather expensive, but if you take advantage of all of the resources the U offers, it pretty well evens out. The library is huge and full of books on everything. The U has an excellent collection of online resources as well. The facilities are well kept, and the campus is pleasurable to walk through. The quality of the education measures up to what you pay for. The professors are genuinely interested in your success, and they teach you how to learn.
Am enjoying being here The U is great, especially if you live on campus. There's always something going on, whether it be a play, a concert, a lecture, or a sports event. There is an abundance of places that you can sit and study or take a break and nap or have some fun. The Student Union offers pool tables, a bowling alley, food, video games, and TV. Plus, you're 5 minutes away from numerous hiking trails, a swimming pool, basketball courts, and other sports facilities.
Am learning a lot The University of Utah offers classes in just about everything, so you can learn anything you want to. All of my professors have been friendly and very willing to help you out if you don't understand something. They are interested in more than just cramming your head full of facts; they teach you how to learn on your own. Such a skill is invaluable in our ever changing world.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Ambitious, Energetic, Fun, Adaptable, Curious, Disciplined & the Not so disciplined, Enterprising, People interested in the college life, Commuters, Original, Unique, Interesting, ANYONE- we love them all!
Tips for prospective students Don't get too scared of the campus. It is big, yes, but it's also great for your health. 15 minutes between classes is actually a decent amount of time. Try to schedule your classes somewhat together. Even if you have no plans at the start of the semester, you could get a job or join a club, and you could really have conflicts. Take the smaller classes, and register as EARLY as you can. Science and Math classes fill up QUICK!
Bang for the buck I say that you get what you want out of the experience. Milk it for all it's worth. Go to every activity, event, concert, or mini show on campus. Enjoy the clubs and service activities that are offered. Choose the classes you want, at the times YOU WANT! If you are miserable, work to change it. There's tons of different things you can do, just find what you love.
Am enjoying being here I love the U. It may seem like it's a big school, and you will get lost as soon as you start. But choose the smaller sized class and you can get to know your peers as well as your teachers more. Utah offers soooo many clubs and you can pretty much find something you love. I joined a sorority, and am so glad I did. I love being involved at the U.
Am learning a lot I have learned so much at the U. I thought college courses in high school would prepare me for real college courses, and I was somewhat right. The teachers aren't nearly as attached to you in college as they were to you in high school. I love the fact that I have an independence and I have to work a little bit harder for the grade. The classes are so diverse and there is a lot of options, so everyone can find their niche.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you are good at learning from a book, and don't mind spending long hours on homework and studying. At least if you're going for a science degree. Also, if you're outgoing and willing to get involved, you can have a great social experience. Otherwise, it might be hard for you to get to know people.
Tips for prospective students I'd say to make sure that there are good teachers in the program you want to go into, using sites like ratemyprofessor.com. They make all the difference in the world. And be prepared to study very hard!
Bang for the buck Getting in state tuition, it's pretty good. There are great facilities and resources. However, beware of the financial aid department. They are very friendly, but most of the time don't know what they're talking about or sending you on a wild goose chase.
Am enjoying being here I have many friends from classes and my fraternity, as well as church. But a social life is kind of hard here, because it is a commuter school. The only way to really make friends here is to get involved. The only parts I really don't like are the poor professors I've had. Overall, if you get involved, it can be really fun. And, living in Salt Lake is great!
Am learning a lot I learn a lot, but not from the professors. My opinion of the physics and mechanical engineering programs is pretty low. They are very disorganized and don't teach well. They are very knowledgeable (for the most part), but need to take some classes on teaching. And when the average for a physics exam is 30%, it seems like nobody has a very good grasp of the material. Math professors are hit or miss. I've had great teachers and awful ones. Maybe my bad experience is just because of the extreme difficulty of the classes I am taking. My general ed classes have been excellent. The teachers actually care about your grade, and you as a person. They are excited to teach, and take feedback well.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Business majors, engineering majors, football players.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The MUSS is the student section in any sport. For football, the MUSS is the place to be. If you want to have fun at a football game, go here.
Bang for the buck I love the U. There's a lot of school pride here, and the students are really friendly.
What to do for fun They have shows / parties once a month on campus that are great to go to, bowling and billiards at the union building, and my personal favorite is exploring all the modern and old-school architecture.
Food and Dining Expensive expensive expensive. On-campus meal plans charge a person 12 - 15$ per meal, and food courts charge about 10$ for a small portion of food and a small drink.
Dorm Life Its pretty lame. Most of the people who live in the dorms have parents near by, so they go home every weekend. To top it off, food plans that go along with already over-priced dorms are expensive - 12 to 15$ per meal.
Academic Rigor The engineering department is insane about work. You need to know the principles of engineering when you graduate, which is why they work you so hard. That being said, its also the reason you can get a good job with just a four-year degree.
Tips for prospective students Get some exercise! The school is on a hill, and it can be pretty tiring to slog around the huge campus all day. Use the free-help programs that the U offers, like the math tutoring center, the engineering tutoring center, and the writing office.
In three sentences The university of Utah is a great place to go to school if you have a job. The teachers are mostly sub-par, but thats because the schools main focus is research, not teaching. My major, mechanical engineering, is fun but difficult.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The University of Utah is great for students who enjoy a large campus and being around people. Students should expect to work hard but the work is worth the knowledge and experiences gained. It is a great school for people who are driven in a specific field or students who have no idea what they want to study and are planning to bounce around until they find a field their crazy about. Overall, all the programs offered have enough diversity that any student could be happy here.
Tips for prospective students The university offers a 'U- night' program (different then orientation), where prospective students spend the day touring campus, go to a sporting event at night, and spend the night in the dorms with college students. I highly suggest participating in one of these nights because you get to experience the actual student atmosphere on campus and see what it would be like living in the dorms and eating in the cafeteria. I would also suggest that students look at the student course feedback when enrolling in classes. These are submitted by students who have just taken the class from that exact professor the semester before. It's nice to see what you're getting yourself into, in terms of what the professor says he requires and what the students actually experienced.
Bang for the buck The school is generally well priced, especially for in-state tuition. Housing is a bit pricey but the buildings were all just re-done for the athletes competing in the 2002 olympics. The personal rooms are spacious and the closets are pretty big, every floor has a laundry room and some kind of hang-out or study room.
Am enjoying being here Campus is a beautiful and peaceful place to be. The scenery is unbeatable with all the open spaces on campus and the ski resorts are only a bus ride away. Plus, campus rents equipment to students for very cheap (ski's, hiking equipment. etc.). People on campus are generally courteous to students around them and are usually very nice and approachable. There are a lot of extra activities offered and clubs to join on campus. There is constantly something to do and people around to have fun with (especially in the dorms).
Am learning a lot The University of Utah offers a wide range of class options within each major, making it easy to find classes that fit my interests. The professors are extremely knowledgeable, encourage open discussions, and most have quirky senses of humor that keep students entertained during long lectures. While the professors teach the standard curriculum, they also incorporate current events and trends into theories, making them easier to remember and use in everyday life. I'm a communication major and I thought it would be the same sort of information taught in all of the similar classes but they are all very unique and teach me something new every day.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck For out-of-state students it can get pricey but for in-state, its a savings and great investment in education!
Did enjoy being here The Salt Lake Valley is amazing! Living in the dorms? You'll enjoy the daily walk/ride down to upper campus. Such a beautiful campus on its own with Rice-Eccles Stadium in the background. Let's not forget the amazing Marriott Library!
Did learn a lot I definitely learned a lot and compared to the schools from my home state, higher education standards.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Salt Lake is pretty safe in general. I'm often out at late hours and I have not really seen any sort of suspicious behavior. Plus there are a lot of security precautions in place.
Clubs and Activities There are a ton of clubs available, and students are always encouraged to make more--which is a fairly simple process.
Great for these types of students Students looking for an education and the traditional collegeexperience commonly sought after.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Get ready for the PAC-12. Football is huge, and a lot of other athletic events are a big deal.
Bang for the buck Because I am an out of state student, it's harder for me to be satisfied. I pay almost three times instate tuition.
What to do for fun There are a lot of student organizations and campus lead events that keep the campus interesting. Salt Lake itself is a little boring, but there is an expansive outdoor scene.
Food and Dining The main residential dining area is a work in progress. They are working to make it better for the residents, and it is tolerable for daily meals.
Dorm Life Many of the facilities have been newly renovated and there are many living options available. The meal options could be more successful, but it is convenient.
Academic Rigor With such a large student body, the average work ethic is bound to decline. There is an expansive honors program, but it is lax and has low requirements.
Tips for prospective students On campus housing is great. there are many living options available and many building are newly renovated. There is also a large international population which is great for both studies and experiences.
In three sentences It is a beautiful, large campus that is regularly experiencing change and improvement. The university has a good atmosphere, but a very large student body. The emergence into PAC 12 has helped the school to grow and expand and it has also brought a stream of new and unique students, nearly doubling its past enrollment.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is well lit, and if you are alone at night you can call campus security to walk with you!
What to do for fun The Union has a lot going on, trax is free for students and a short train ride will take you down town, athletics games are always fun to watch, and the University is close to the mountains so those are just playgrounds for adults
Food and Dining Jamba Juice! The cafeterias hours are limited, but there are many other healthy and convenient options available. The 24 hour Starbucks is the best!
Dorm Life Close to campus and always things going on. Fairly nice, and people are always around to study with or head down to the Union to bowl.
Academic Rigor Classes can be killer, but professors and other students always reach out to help whether its discussion groups, study groups, or tutors, there is always help available.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! There are so many different things going on around campus that you can be involved on any level no matter what your time constraints are. There are small and big opportunities, but each are just as rewarding and fun.
In three sentences The University of Utah encompasses all students and is constantly growing and evolving. There are new and exciting things going on all the time whether its life changing research, guest speakers, athletics or free pizza at the Union.

Tips for prospective students Attend a Connecting U Day, investigate programs and activities you're interested in because there are so many available
Bang for the buck The U seems to give out numerous scholarships to almost everyone who applies. They seem to happy to have people come to their school. I feel like they are grateful to have me there and value me as a student.
Will enjoy being here I am so excited to attend the U in the fall! I have spent lots of time on campus for different events and I can't wait to become a part of it all!
Will learn a lot I'm ecstatic about my classes because they all meet requirements and interest me!

Bang for the buck The University of Utah is fair priced. It is worth your money.
Am enjoying being here The University of Utah is great. They have something for everyone. They have a lot of majors, plenty of opportunities for recreation, a great location in Salt Lake City, and great residence halls.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I know a ton of people here are really sports oriented....everyone skiis and watches the Utes. But I think this school is pretty good for any type student. It's a nice campus, clean, good views of the mountains and the valley. Salt Lake has a lot to do, and Trax to get you there, which is awesome.
Tips for prospective students Especially for out of state students: get your FAFSA in early, and get lots of scholarships! In general: I'd definitely reccomend going to the events or joining a club--it helps to have friends around campus with similar interests, and we all need a break from studying once and a while!
Bang for the buck I think for out-of-state students (which I started out as) it's especially tough. I love this school, but it's pricey if you don't live here. Even for in-state students, it's not super cheap, but I think the rates are more reasonable and definitely worth the experience. I'd also like to add that students get to use Trax and the other UTA programs (buses, trains, etc) for free, which is wonderful! For me, since I live off campus, this is especially helpful and definitely my favorite perk (besides getting a good education, of course).
Am enjoying being here I'm the library's biggest fan, and I love the museums on campus as well. I think there's plenty of things to do here besides just studying, but if that's what you like to do, then you'll have plenty of resources to accomplish just that.
Am learning a lot Definitely learning a ton! These professors know what they're talking about and they are very helpful when you need help. I have yet to meet a rude professor or one that has no idea what they're talking about.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Utah is great for people who love the outdoors and people who are commuting and people who are coming from out of state. There are so many different types of students who attend the U and student groups that cater to the different types here.
Tips for prospective students Coming from out of state can be a large culture shock when entering Utah, however at the U there are a large amount of people so the culture shock isn't as scary as say going to Provo would be.
Bang for the buck It's getting steep to go here, but only if your out of state. To become in-state it is pretty cheap and that takes only a year of being in Utah to gain in-state tuition. Once you get here the food can be kind of expensive, but there are a lot of events and such that are free and offer free food.
Am enjoying being here I love the pace of the University of Utah. Utah is a beautiful campus with at least one of every tree in the state. There is alway something to do: Concerts and parties and events. Utah is also in the new Pac 12 and it is amazing.
Am learning a lot I learn a lot here. I am taking two majors and a minor. It's insane, but so awesome. Even in the larger classes I've been in professor's seem to love discussions. Professors are so easy to approach and all give you their emails. It's easy to learn and form a relationship with your prof. Also, it's pretty easy to find classes that cap at 30 and classes that cap at 250 depending on your learning style.

Bang for the buck The Library is open 24 Hours which is AMAZING if you are trying to study.
What to do for fun Go to the Union and bowl, Go to Crimson Nights, Join a Sorority or Fraternity. There are so many things.
Food and Dining Its pretty expensive and not the greatest food you can find, But there are many restaurants surrounding campus that you don't have to worry about that
Dorm Life I have not lived in the dorms so I would not know but from what I hear they are a great place to study and make friends.
Academic Rigor This school is very competitive so if you like that then this is perfect for you!
Tips for prospective students Find your major and stick with it! If you are undecided it is harder for you to finish classes and know what classes to take next.
In three sentences I love the University of Utah! It is a great school with all the majors you can think of. There are also so many fun extracurricular things to do on campus you would never be bored.

Dorm Life There are many dorm options, I personally do not reside in a dorm but many of my friends enjoy them.
Academic Rigor The courses get more and more rigorous as you get deeper into your major, but the instructors are right there with you and will always help you succeed.
In three sentences The University of Utah is a great school. Each and every instructor is dedicated to their students success and always make available time to meet with their students. There are also several on campus opportunities to expand your learning and have fun networking with others.

Bang for the buck A little expensive, especially for out of state.
What to do for fun Pretty much everything outdoors is excellent in Salt Lake City. Bike, rock climbing, hiking, ski/snowboard.
Food and Dining unknown
Dorm Life unknowwn
Tips for prospective students I would not recommend this school for commercial arts like graphic design, or photography. It's fine art programs are OK but not great. Salt Lake City is a great place to live especiall if you enjoy the outdoors. Engineering, medical and science students should seriously consider the U.
In three sentences I think the U has quite a few great colleges for medicine, engineering and sciences. It has a fabulous library. The campus location is close but not in downtown Salt Lake City with good public transportation which is convenient

Categories Comments Campus Safety Salt Lake City is an extremely safe city on its own and campus is even safer. There is campus security that patrol everywhere as well as if you're walking late at night from one side of campus to the other they recommend you call them for someone to walk with you or for a ride.
Greek Life We do have a great Greek system on campus. There are 6 sororities and 8 fraternities at the U. They are not your typical party-party houses, but they do have a lot of leadership qualities and things that stand out in the community! I recommend doing rush week, even if you're not for the Greek life, you might change your mind.
Clubs and Activities There is always so much happening around campus thanks to all the clubs and activities committees. If you have an interest in something, we more than likely have a club for that and if we don't why not start one! Everyone on campus knows about our ASUU student government, our MUSS (the student section at the sporting events), One Love (the ski and snowboard club on campus) and more.
Great for these types of students Anyone who has a passion for school spirit :) GO UTES!
Bang for the buck If you are an American citizen and attend school at the University of Utah and stay a full year in Utah you can gain residency where the tuition is CUT IN HALF! I think it's an amazing reason to go adventure and move to a new state, try something new! With the amazing classes, professors and the people you met it's defiantly worth the money.
What to do for fun Utah is unique as right in the backyard of campus you can go on a few mile hike! I always enjoy hiking with friends on a nice Saturday afternoon. If it's during season watching the Utah Utes sports teams are always a fun adventure and being a student it's FREE, with exception of the football games but hey who wouldn't want to join the MUSS? There's always something going around on campus, enjoy it!
Food and Dining Dorm life tends to mean cafeteria food! The Heritage Center provides the student dining, and it wasn't that bad. There is a make your own sandwich station, make your own salad station, cereal, toast, WAFFLE MAKERS, Chinese food, pizza, burgers and fries and then there is always a main course and they do have vegetarian options. There is a small food court on lower campus where there is sushi, Chinese, jamba juice, grill, sandwich place, salad place. Throughout campus there are little restaurants and cafes and at the bottom of campus on 1300E you have a variety of restaurants as well including the famous Pie Pizzeria.
Dorm Life I recommend that every student spend at least a year living the dorm life! It was the best experience; I met so many friends and there was ALWAYS activities going on. My roommate won a big screen TV, Xbox, games, all from just going to a free movie night. There's always events, prizes, and FREE FOOD through the housing board.
Academic Rigor With the campus being a bigger campus there are tons of options for classes, and there are tons of majors that fit really anyone's interest. The medical school is unreal and the U's business school is spectacular, especially with the new business building.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you know you are coming to a bigger school, where the class sizes are bigger (it pays off though as there are tons of programs and classes to chose from). Utah does have different standards, as majority of the state is LDS and it is a dry campus.
In three sentences If you want to go to a school where the view is beautiful, the people are friendly, the professors are helpful and there is numerous classes to chose from, U of U is the school for you! There is ALWAYS something happening if not on campus off campus, where hiking is in your backyard, and the mountains are just a 20-30 minute drive away.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students if you can learn in a lecture setting with big class sizes then this is a great college.
Tips for prospective students not all professors use the textbooks they require. wait until they semester begins to buy your books. it saves money.
Bang for the buck kind of pricey but, if you are an instate resident than it is a really good price for the education you are getting.
Am enjoying being here Majority of the professors I have had have a passion for what they are teaching and are always available to help students with any of their needs. Also, they have so many free activities to take advantage of.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Any one who likes the outdoors, the city, and a well rounded education.
Tips for prospective students Look around. While the University of Utah was definitely a good fit for me, it might not be for you. Apply to many different colleges; but most importantly, go visit the college campus. The U offers a great campus tour with tour guides who are currently students at the U. Come see for yourself what the U has to offer.
Bang for the buck The University of Utah offers a variety of services for free to U of U students. Things ranging from career services to free Cobra Star ship concerts, the U covers them all.
Am enjoying being here The University of Utah campus is absolutely beautiful. With the mountains in the back and downtown Salt Lake in the front, there is always something to do. It doesn't matter whether you like the outdoors or the city. The University of Utah campus offers both.
Am learning a lot The best part of the U is the amazing professors that teach here. They all must do research in the area they teach, so not only do they know about the subject, they actually have done research in it. Take Mario Cappecchi. He is a noble prize winner in science for the work that he has done in genetics. He is also a genetics teacher at the U. Its nice to know that the professors actually know what they are teaching.

Bang for the buck I was lucky enough to get a small scholarship from the University to help me pay for my tuition. So the money is out there, you just have to put in the effort to go get it.
Am enjoying being here I love it here! Salt Lake City is a great location! I love campus. It is beautiful! Summer, Fall, Winter, whatever season: the beauty of it changes too.
Am learning a lot At the U I have learned so much, but the most important thing I have learned is that I still have a lot more to learn! The professors are great and very willing to help you. For me, that was a pleasant surprise.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a 24-hour campus security on-site to provide escorts at night, respond to emergencies, and notify students of any suspicious people or dangerous situations.
Clubs and Activities There are lots of clubs and activities to get involved with through the ASUU, Union Building, Bennion Center, local churches, etc.
Great for these types of students Great for people who love the outdoors or who love exercising. The field house is an excellent place to work out, as well as the McCarthy Track&Field, and the exersise lounge in the dorm area. Also, the campus itself is a great place to walk or jog around. Just getting from class to class often requires a lot of walking.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The MUSS is a sports-supporting group that is great to join. They have lots of traditions at football games--for example, jump on the third down and yell on the first down. Another neat tradition is the Bleed Red campaign, which is a competition against Utah State for who can donate the most blood during the weekend of the Utes vs Aggies football game.
What to do for fun Hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities are easily accessible with close trails and ski resorts. The campus is always holding concerts, poetry readings, arts events, etc. for entertainment.
Food and Dining Food is quite good actually, but being a vegetarian makes finding lots of options difficult. There aren't a lot of veggi-friendly varieties, but the food itself is still tasty.
Dorm Life Living on campus makes getting to class so convenient and I have met many new people.
Academic Rigor I am working towards getting my BFA degree in Musical Theatre. I am in the Honors program as well. The theatre, dance, and music classes aren't difficult but they do require a lot of outside work through practice time, memorization, etc. My classes through the Honors College were a bit more difficult, but the teachers are all very committed to their students which makes the classes exciting.
Tips for prospective students First of all, get familiar with the campus before the first day of school and figure out how to get to each building and room for your classes. The campus is very large and can be intimidating during early exploration. As far as classes go, get to know your teachers on a personal level. Teachers appreciate when students care about their class and if you take the initiative to contact them and ask questions they will see you care more about just getting a good grade, but you engage yourself if the subject matter.
In three sentences The U of U is beautifully nestled in the Rocky Mountains, providing excellent scenery for studying outdoors. Many opportunities for skiing, hiking, canoing, and other outdoor activities are offered through classes because of its convenient location. The U is committed to encouraging students to achieve their best through offering tutor services, various places to study, and dedicated teachers.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus safety is great. They have people patrolling all night on and around campus, and a campus police force that really keeps the campus safe.
Bang for the buck If you're paying for in state tuition, you're getting a great deal for the amount of money you spend. Tons of class options, tons of clubs, tons of opportunities.
What to do for fun There's all kinds of stuff to do on and off campus in Salt Lake. Utah is known as an outdoor paradise because of all the great stuff to do here. There are a number of clubs that offer discounts on lift tickets and season passes to the ski resorts, a great rental program through the university, and all kinds of intramural sports.
Food and Dining Almost all of the buildings have some small cafe in them, and they all have pretty good food, although the library cafe is the best. The dorm meal center is expensive, but it's a good buffet option.
Dorm Life The dorms here are great. I spent my first year in the dorms, Sage Point is the quiet half of the dorm area, and Chapel Glen is the party dorm, so it has a little of something for everyone.
Academic Rigor This all depends on the courses you choose. You can pick classes that make high school look like Harvard or you can choose classes that make you feel like you're attending Harvard.
Tips for prospective students Figure out what you want to do with your life within the first year of attending school here, otherwise you're gonna waste a lot of time on credits that might not mean anything. Also they offer lots of really specific scholarships that a lot of people can get automatically, so look into that.
In three sentences The campus is huge. Really huge. Be prepared to walk a long ways or wait for campus shuttles. The faculty is friendly and cooperative, for the most part. The winters here are tons of fun, but cold.

Categories Comments Greek Life ugreek is the best! many chapters to choose from and from the first day of recruitment you are bound to have the best 4 years of your life. such a tight nit greek community, where everyone greek knows everyone else that is greek. having the bond with your house is like having a home away from home, automatically you are apart of something that you will carry with you forever!
Great for these types of students outdoorsy, interested in the medical field, sciences, skiers/snowboarders
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus a major tradition at the u is the food drive between university of utah and our rival, brigham young university. it is a state wide food drive where almost every grocery store, gas station, and local business participate it.
What to do for fun there are a lot of recreational activities to do here in salt lake in both the winter and the summer, it's a great place for people who like to be outdoors to come to school.
Food and Dining there are lots of good restaurants close to campus, as well as many quick places to eat on campus.
Dorm Life i never lived in the dorms, but i have lived close to campus and it was so much better than commuting from home.
Academic Rigor the u is not easy, you definitely have to work hard for your grades, but in the end, having a degree from the university of utah is a great award and achievement that your future employers will notice.
Tips for prospective students if you're considering u of u as a prospective school for your future, you should keep in mind that the u has a great medical program, it is known world wide. i would say that if you do choose to come to the u, you should take advantage of all the extracurricular activities and clubs there are on campus. the u is a big school, and if you are coming from out of state, you can feel lost. getting involved is a great way to meet new people with similar interest to you.
In three sentences the u offers many great opportunities for involvement both on campus as well as off. it is culturally diverse, in that there are many students that come from around the world to study at the u. the medical school located on campus is known world wide for their cardiovascular achievements therefore makes the learning experience, for students interested in the medical field, very valuable.

Categories Comments Campus Safety they have emergency buttons to push situated all over campus if something happens. there is also a system where, if you allow it, they send you e-mail or text messages of very potential hazards and where crime had taken place. i didn't get too many alerts, maybe only once or twice.
Clubs and Activities there are billions of things for students to do to get involved. there is a center called the bennion center where they match students with tons of volunteer opportunities in salt lake and around campus. there are many clubs to join and many opportunities to try for student government (asuu). they also e-mail students about upcoming events like fairs, guest speakers, study abroad, etc.
Great for these types of students i think this university are good for those who are motivated, proactive, and have a positive attitude. it is good for those who wish to interact with diverse peoples in a safe environment. it is definitely for the open minded for there are so many different ideas.
Bang for the buck for incoming freshman i highly recommend you take a leap class which is a smaller class so you know your professor and your classmates much better than in a large regular class. i also recommend you take educational psychology, it will give you good tips on how to survive in college like etiquette in how to e-mail professors and other things like that.
What to do for fun being in utah there are many outdoor sports, you could rent equipment to go mountaineering, ice climbing, snowboarding, skiing, camping, etc. there are also fitness programs and classes for things like swimming, martial arts, yoga, or aerobics. there are also sororities and fraternities and many interesting volunteer opportunities. there are also service projects planned sometimes in the weekends.
Food and Dining the food is pretty good especially when your hungry, there is papa johns, salads, hamburger with fries, soup, mandalay express.........a good variety. i personally think the prices are a little high for me ;) it depends where you eat, as for the rest of the world the prices are average. the university is situated on a hill above salt lake city, it may take a little travel to go down to the diverse restaurants down there.
Dorm Life unrated, no experience with the dorms. the dorms look pretty nice though.
Academic Rigor it depends on the classes you take, some are much harder than others. it is a good idea to prepare for class.
Tips for prospective students i suggest that if you get accepted to apply for the dorms months earlier than the due date because they get filled fast and they have a waiting list. also, it is a big campus, study the map or tour around to find your classes before the first day so you aren't late; it is best to make a good first impression!
In three sentences it is a fairly diverse college with students from all over the world. it also has a good reputation in being a research university and is in the pac12. not to forget also that it has good professors, one recent one had won the 2007 nobel prize.

What to do for fun the campus is located near down town salt lake city, so all of the the activities that go along with big city life are available. also to go with the city there are many activities on campus available from sports, exercise, food, bowling, pool, museums, trails, skiing, snowboarding, and movies of course.

In three sentences the university of utah makes it possible for students to get the best free help available. for each of my science classes there is a discussion that goes along with it to add supplementary help for the class. this extra help, makes it possible for me to learn the material and pass with even higher scores.

Food and Dining every once in awhile, there will be something good to choose, but be prepared to eat a lot of sandwiches (which, in my opinion, is the best option available).
Dorm Life the dorms are not too close to classes, which makes it frustrating to live there.

Dorm Life i have never lived in the dorms so i can't say. living in an apartment off campus is fine. there is plenty of parking and it is affordable.
Academic Rigor the academics here are competitive. the amount of schoolwork, especially in scientific courses, can be heavy at times. the extra instruction and help is necessary for many students.

Academic Rigor all of my professors have encouraged me to do my best and there are tons of free tutoring opportunities. if you want to do your best, it is very possible.
Tips for prospective students i would encourage to get involved as much as possible. it is a commuter school therefore it's harder to meet people if you don't get involved in campus life. look into greek life, the benion center, and asuu to get started.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities The athletic events are definitely something you must experience during college.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus My favorite location on campus is in the Art and Architecture building. There are so many cool projects that you can look at and it is also a quiet place to study.
What to do for fun For fun you can get involved in the many different clubs or join a sorority or fraternity. They also have places where you can go and exercise and play sports.
Food and Dining The food on campus is great. my favorite place to eat is at the union. they have a variety of stuff you can choose from.
Dorm Life The dorms are amazing. they are not very small like most dorms but they also feel big enough that you place to put your stuff.
Academic Rigor The courses may be difficult depending on the classes that you take.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus legacy bridge has a great view. the library has a fantastic book collection and makes me absolutely happy!
What to do for fun you can go to crimson nights, take trax to gateway, or hang out with friends and have a movie night (my favorite).
Food and Dining it's good about once week at dinner, but the lunches are usually amazing. the dinner just gets old occasionally.
Dorm Life great! the dorms are in excellent condition and there are many opportunities for upper classmen to live in cool houses.
Academic Rigor it depends on the class. if it's honors, you'll get more attention from your professor, and it will be harder. if it's an upper division class it will be harder. if it's a gen ed, it's easy.
Tips for prospective students live on campus your first year. it may be more expensive, but you need to get used to the campus and make friends. work hard and talk to professors.
In three sentences activities and opportunities are always happening on campus; the only problem is deciding what to do. i have enjoyed my professors because they teach well and are helpful. most of all, i love the university's resources, which it puts toward improving my life as a student.

Categories Comments Campus Safety pretty darn safe...and i know a lot of the security officers personally...most of them are ex-military...i honesty never feel like i need to call them and i am often on campus late at night all alone. (i am a very small female.)
Greek Life there are a ton of greek houses and they are really nice!
Clubs and Activities there are really too many to mention, and i have never had time to join any of them!
Great for these types of students anthropology, medical, language, english, art, biology, geology and so much more...this school is amazing!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i am not giving away trade secrets...my name is emily, i spend a lot of time in the antrhro building and at the library and in the art building...if you can learn who i am...maybe i will tell you what to look out for.
Bang for the buck i am still learning, i have only been on campus for 7 months and i still find little secrets.
What to do for fun my goodness, they are always having friday night events and wednesday nights there are movies at the post theater and every friday at 12:30 the spanish department puts on a foreign language film (but they keep that on the down-low).
Food and Dining on campus dining is alright...there is a variety of choices in the union building and a cafe in the library and the prices are not too bad. i'd say cheaper than picking it up at the local 7eleven, but more than if you bought it at the store and brown-bagged it.
Dorm Life from what i have heard...it must be excellent, and everyone seems to be well fed and happy. but honestly i have always lived off campus.
Academic Rigor i have felt challenged in my coursework, and i think that is a good thing. i did transfer into the university as a junior so i did not experience any of the lower level courses so i cannot speak to taking bone-head math or simple writing courses, but i have not heard any of the incoming freshmen speak of having professors that allow them to breeze through semesters.
Tips for prospective students i suggest doing your due diligence when choosing courses that are out of your discipline. since there are so many expert professors in other fields it is worth it to make sure that you have the opportunity to take a course from one of them if possible.
In three sentences this school is terrific, especially if you love being in a beautiful setting. i chose this school based on recommendations that the anthropology department was one of the best in the country, but that is not all they are best in. they have expert in nearly every field in all of their departments.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Utah is a very tame state, and doesn't have a lot of crime. Plus there are several safety precautions that the University has in place to keep you safe. Emergency stations are located throughout campus, so if you're in a pinch, you can get call for help immediately. Also, the campus alert system will warn you via text message if there is a major problem around the University (e.g. a natural disaster or a fugitive).
Clubs and Activities There's pretty much a club for everyone. and if you can't find one, you can get six random people together and start your own! Personally, I joined the marching band because they get to perform at all the football games, including bowl games! It's amazing feeling when a huuuge crowd of people cheer as you march onto the field!
Great for these types of students The University has a fantastic music program! Our music education teachers definitely know their stuff, and I have benefitted greatly from my private lessons. And if you're into music composition, you've pretty much hit the jackpot. Many of the band directors will perform your piece in front of a live audience so you can hear what it sounds like! It's really cool.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Once every football game, the Mighty Utah Student Section begins to chant CRAZY LADY over and over again. Then, an old lady wearing a football jersey jumps in front of the marching band and begins to dance while the band plays the Blues Brothers theme song. The entire student section jumps around like crazy, the marching band dances around the stands, and the entire stadium begins to roar at the spectacle! Who knew that an old lady could fire up 45,000 people just by dancing?
Bang for the buck The University of Utah is expensive, but the more you get involved, the more you'll get out of your college experience. Definitely utilize your academic resources, such as advising, career help, free public transportation pass, free concert tickets, restaurant discounts, etc., and make sure you apply for any scholarship/financial aid you qualify for!
What to do for fun Go skiing! Utah has the greatest snow on earth, and there are plenty of options to choose from. Also, if you're a film major, or if you're interested in movies in general, I'd recommend checking out the Tower Theater on 9th and 9th, or the Broadway Theater downtown. They host a wide variety of indie movies that will make your inner film geek squee with delight.
Food and Dining The dorms don't have kitchens, so naturally it's required that students purchase a meal plan. Food in the union building is actually pretty fantastic, but the stuff they serve at the Heritage Center is below average. Thankfully there are plenty of restaurants around campus that offer student discounts, though on the flip side it makes it very easy to pack on the freshman 15.
Dorm Life The University of Utah is pretty much a commuter school. The activities in the dorms are okay, but I would much rather grab a group of friends and go somewhere rather than hang out in the dorms. With that being said, there are plenty of things to do in Salt Lake City! You just have to know where to look.
Academic Rigor It all depends on what you're majoring in, but it's very easy to overwhelm yourself with too much homework. From personal experience, music education majors have a nightmarish amount of work to do.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! The more you get involved, the more you'll enjoy yourself in college! By joining one of the many clubs/organizations on campus, you will make plenty of friends with your same interests. Believe me, lectures are much less intimidating when you actually recognize people in your classroom.
In three sentences I love the University of Utah! It may seem large and intimidating at first, but the academic advisors are very friendly and very willing to help you out. Plus the football games are the most fun you'll ever have in college!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There have been many instances where me and some friends will be returning to the campus very late on weekend nights, and numerous cops riding bikes can be seen throughout campus at all hours of the night.
Greek Life There is a very high esteem for the Greek life at the U. There is an entire street that contains all of the fraternity and sorority houses called Greek Row. However, they are not merely party clubs. The members of both sororities and fraternities alike, can often be seen partaking in service projects, or doing something that gives back to the community.
Clubs and Activities To be honest, I am not really a part of these clubs and organizations but I know that there are PLENTY to chose from and from the things I hear from the students in them, they are very fun.
Great for these types of students Students that are eager to get into their careers as soon as possible. Students that enjoy a large campus and campus life. Students that enjoy great scenery.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every so often, there are Crimson Nights up at the U's Union Building. Basically it is a night where U students can come together (for FREE) and dance, bowl, play pool, hang out, eat, you name it! They are always very fun to go to.
Bang for the buck The University of Utah is the largest school in Utah, located in the biggest city in Utah. It is a nationally renowned university in a number of different areas. However, all of these great aspects and it is almost the exact same price as going to a much smaller, barely known (outside of Utah), college that is in the city of Ogden called Weber State University. The U offers much better teaching, many more departments, a bigger city with more to do, and it still costs literally almost the exact same.
What to do for fun University of Utah is located literally just up the street from the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, which recently had an AMAZING new mall open up (City Creek Shopping Center). Combine that with the Utah Jazz, which play downtown, and the amazing array of eateries that SLC has to offer. If city life isn't your thing, the U is located very close to a few different canyons. These provide a number of ski resorts, hiking trails, rivers, etc. In summation, there are activities that fit just about anyone's preferences right around the U.
Food and Dining The food provided through the school is very good, but what's more, the restaurants literally across the street are amazing. The Pie pizzeria has become a huge staple for most students diets on campus. You cannot attend the U of U without once trying the amazing pizza's that The Pie has to offer!
Academic Rigor I give this a 4 star rating, not because the classes are way too difficult, but simply because you just need to stay on top of them. Make sure you do your little bits of homework each night so that it doesn't pile up on you. Also make sure you at least get to class. Even if you don't take notes, being there will make all the difference in the world.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of every opportunity you have to see your counselor. They are there for a reason, and they can help you much more than you would be able to do yourself (and faster too). Also, take time to go to some of the different departments and talk to them about their major programs. You never know, one that you had never thought of might be the right one for you!
In three sentences This university is a great learning institution. Teachers, for the most part, try as hard as possible to help their students to the best of their abilities. They also help you immensely with getting the right path laid out for you, more often than not, accommodating to rather hectic schedules.

Categories Comments Food and Dining I would buy lunch in the student Union, and it was really good food. They would serve different options that would satisfy any craving that you could possibly have. From sushi, to pizza, and the classic hamburger, you could find something that would be filling and yummy too.
Dorm Life I don't know much about the dorm life since I don't live on campus. But I would go visit some friends that did live on campus and the life was fun and people were always doing things so I'm sure you could find something that was enjoyable and be able to make new friends easily.
Academic Rigor Most classes are pretty rigorous since this school is well known. But they challenge you and the professors are really helpful and are willing to take the time to help you succeed.

Great for these types of students This campus is perfect for those who intend to work in the medical field. It is also great for students who want to experience life in the city.
Bang for the buck The tuition at the University of Utah is about average. You definitely are not paying what you would if attending Harvard, but the location of this university is well-worh the money spent. The medical department is rated highly at the university as well as its sports teams and art department.
What to do for fun There are many on-campus activities available for the students to attend such as movie nights and social gatherings. Tips for prospective students This is a very good school where those who look to excel, and to find a better future for themselves. They may find it here.
In three sentences The University of Utah is a school of traditions. Traditions that attract and keep students interested in attending. These traditions include but not limited to, helping students succeed academically, excel far beyond whats expected in athletics, and demonstrates a proud and diverse faculty and students to accomplish obstacles that are paved in front of them.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This campus is beyond safe. There are poles with blue lights and poles all over campus with phone in case of an emergency. But you have to have common sense. Don't walk by yourself late at night through campus and you will be fine. Although, if you are on campus late at night for finals or projects there, you can call security and they will give you a ride to your car. I have always felt safe here!
Greek Life The greek life at the University of Utah either is or isn't for you. Joining a sorority or fraternity is another awesome way to get involved and make life long friends really fast. They throw awesome parties, do tons of service, and have different events at each house that the students at the university come out to and support. If you are unsure, or don't know much about greek life consider going to recruitment. You might as well. It is a good experience and you will figure out right away if it is something that you will enjoy or not.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs for I think almost anything you can possibly think of that the university, and if the club your thinking of isn't here, you can start it. There are both competitive and club activities. The competitive ones you more then likely will need to try out for or be recruited. The club ones, anyone can join. It is more of something to do for fun! Joining a club is a great way to get involved and meet new people!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of my favorite traditions at the U is Crimson Nights. Its a huge party on campus with dancing, games, food, rides, you name it! It occurs 3 to 4 times a year and always has a different theme to go along with it. Also another one of my favorites, the university has started this concert called the Grand Kerfuffle. The years that I attended they had Mike Posner come and Wiz Kalifa the following year. The best part is, being a student at the university you get in for free and sometimes even an extra ticket to bring someone along! There are so many different traditions at the University of Utah. Anything from parties, to homecoming, to sports, to sororities and fraternities, to cultural events. You decide what you interested in and what sounds fun and you choose to participate.
What to do for fun There is so much to do for fun while attending the University of Utah. I highly recommend joining the MUSS (Mighty Utah Student Section) for football at least. It gets you in to all the pre-games, season tickets to the football games, free food, free t-shirt, and more. They also have the MUSS for other sports as well. Also, the university throws Crimson Nights about 3 to 4 times a year. This party is huge and so much fun with tons of different things to do depending on the theme. There is sororities and fraternities that are awesome to be involved in if that is something you want to do. The University is also close to downtown so you can participate in events and concerts going on there too. You also will live extremely close to a couple different snowboard and skiing resorts! In the winter those are huge hot spots. There is tons to do outdoors or indoors. You can always find something that you interested in and that you will enjoy doing.
Food and Dining The food and dining selection at the University is great! There are numerous places to eat all through out campus. The union (Student Center) is the main place that people all over central campus eat. You have anything from salads to pizza, to burgers, to Chinese and Japanese food to sushi to sandwiches, ect. They have it all. It is not over priced either. Is it just like what you would pay anywhere else. If you have a meal plan through the housing department you can transfer meals here as well as to anywhere else on campus. There is also a place called the HC (Heritage Center) where most people that do live on campus eat. They have a huge selection as well but it is more of a buffet style of eating. If you were worried about the food choices at the university you shouldn't be. There is plenty to choose from and its all excellent quality.
Dorm Life I have heard nothing but good about the dorms on campus. Although I chose to live off campus, I often wish I would have lived there to be able to have experienced them first hand. I did have numerous friends that lived their though and they all enjoyed it. The rooms are not very big and sharing with someone forces you to learn very fast how to live not only with a roommate but on your own as well. They are also a little bit pricy from what I know, but the experiences you have, the people you meet, and the memories you will make will last a life time.
Academic Rigor Most professors are very forward and to the point. Whether your just starting out doing generals, taking upper division classes, or somewhere in between, each class is important and they expect you to treat them as so. You will receive a syllabus for each class the first day and the professors will stick to what the syllabus states, with a few exceptions here and there. You will know after the first day what is expected of you from that specific professor and how to achieve an outstanding grade in their class. I have never been in a class where late work is accepted without only receiving half credit, and even then there is a dead line to when late work is due. Most professors will not allow make up tests at all unless something tragic has happened, but depending on your situation some teachers might work with you. Professors vary drastically. I recommend using ratemyprofessor.com. Reading the ratings on your intended professor and class there will help you make decisions on whether this class will be the right fit for you. There is a lot of hard work involved in order to achieve good grades, but it is possible here! I have truly enjoyed the classes I have taken and the professors I have had.
Tips for prospective students 1. Like at any University, if you know what you want to major in make sure the University of Utah has your program and meet with your academic advisor often. They will answer all your questions regarding your major. Don't be afraid to talk to them and make appointments. That is their job! 2. Get Involved & Participate. You meet so many new people and create friendships that will last a life time. 3. Use the resources they have available for you. For example: the library! It is beautiful and such a good place to study. Almost always someone is there studying the same thing you are! Great way to meet new study buddies! 4. Leave for class early. The parking situation gets crazy in the mornings and can cause you to be late. So make sure you have more then enough time, whether your parking, riding trax, or taking the shuttle. 5. Stay on top of your work! I know you have heard this before but there really is a lot to do for each class. I suggest making a calendar of all the dates, when tests are, when things are due ect. This has worked for me and will make sure you don't accidentally forget about anything.
In three sentences I learned so much at the University of Utah that i will truly be my foundation forever. The teachers are high accredited teachers, which you will be fully aware of from their classes and the diversity of students you will meet there is awesome, so many different people with different stories and experiences. However, because it is a big school with a lot of students you will need to take the initiative in asking questions and getting involved to make your experience the best one.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can sign up for emergency notifications to be sent to you via text. The system is very quick and helpful.
Bang for the buck The University of Utah is a college that is admired by employers, but is also relatively inexpensive since it is funded by tax money. I would recommend this college in Utah over private colleges such as Westminster.
What to do for fun There are numerous groups that you can join. There is a great center (Bennion Center) for volunteering. Many of the volunteering experiences are fun. There are yearly drag races, which get a huge turnout! Kingsbury Hall is on campus, as well as Red Butte Gardens and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and the Utah Museum of History is nearby.
Food and Dining There are many restaurants/cafes throughout the large campus. The selection in the main food court is not that great currently, but it used to be.
Dorm Life I live off campus, but I have heard the dorm life is excellent.
Academic Rigor As an undergraduate, I have probably encountered more professors who aren't as experienced, but I still have had a great experience at this college!
Tips for prospective students If you have a good GPA, apply for scholarships. Consider riding Trax instead of using gas money. This school offers free Trax passes, which makes going to and from school very inexpensive. There are also many jobs nearby or within the school, so look into jobs on campus through utah.edu .
In three sentences There are so many research/internship opportunities there. Many of the buildings are very brand new. This college is considered to be one of the top 100 schools worldwide.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Many people are walking all over the streets without using the crosswalks and as a driver is it scary! They could work on making sure that there are more defined crosswalks for students or posts that are displayed to let pedestrians know where to go or not.
Bang for the buck If you can do some networking and get to know the professors. Then yes definitely can get somewhere easier. Teachers like to take the whole class period so you are not wasting your money on education.
What to do for fun Science labs, library, ride your bike throughout the campus and see the beautiful scenery.
Food and Dining I bring my own food to school to eat. Need to save money!
Dorm Life I live off campus in my own home
Tips for prospective students Make sure you know what you want to do. Check with the academic advisors regularly to make sure you are on the right track.

Greek Life I've never been one for the Greek life but it is offered at this university.
Clubs and Activities The list is virtually endless. Also if you want to start your own club you can.
Great for these types of students Any type of person is perfect for this university because it's all about having a diverse environment.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The most unusual place to me is actually underground. The cadaver lab is down there and that creeps me out but also the library. There are huge glass casings located in front of the library. They are actually like sun roofs for the underground levels because natural sunlight is proven to help you learn better than artificial light.
Bang for the buck Although the price of college can add up quickly I feel that the University of Utah has so many financial aid opportunities that there is no need to worry about money.
What to do for fun The U is located in such a convienient area. There are so many activities to do that I can't even list them all. Some activities are snowboarding and skiing because the canyon is about 30 minutes away. The sports teams especially the football team is a definite go to activity. Don't miss them because they are a rare experience.
Food and Dining Nothing tastes as good as your home cooked meals but the food is considerably good. There is a wide variety to choose from and it all tastes pretty good.
Dorm Life Living with strangers is not fun but once you get to know people it can be a blast. The co-ed dorms are my personal favorite because you can hang out with all kinds of people and personalities.
Academic Rigor The courses are meant to challenge you not overwhelm you.
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to ask for help or directions because the campus is quite large. Take advantage of all that the university has to offer for example the library.
In three sentences This school has such an electric atmosphere. The students and professors are so willing to help anybody who asks. The financial aid opportunities are endless and there are many advisers to help with any questions that may arise.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The MUSS for football is the best thing that any student can get involved in. It's steeped in tradition and it is a definite rush. Every Ute should experience at least one season as a member of the MUSS.
Bang for the buck For a state school, the University of Utah really keeps up with the big dogs so to say. The research they put forth every year is impressive and makes me proud to be able to call my self a Ute.
What to do for fun There is always something happening on campus, whether it is a pick up game of volleyball outside the student union of an intense game of pool there will always be something that will be able to pull your mind away from the inevitable stress that school brings.
Food and Dining While campus food will never compare to mom's home-cooking, the University of Utah does a pretty good job at keeping their students well fed and for not that high of a cost.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. But from what I hear dorm life is about the same no matter the school, I will continue to believe the U is the best though, and nobody will be able to make me believe otherwise.
Academic Rigor I'm not going to sugar coat anything, the professors are tough on you, it's definitely not high school. But it's worth it, the challenge is refreshing and will keep you on your toes

Greek Life I rushed my first year and I loved it. I didn't join because I felt I couldn't commit enough time to a house to make it worth while. I have a few friends who are pledged and they are having a blast with Greek life.
Clubs and Activities I couldn't begin to list all of the possibilities that the U has. There are hundreds of clubs and if there isn't a club that you like the U makes it very easy to set up a new club. As for activities, they are endless. The U has plays going on all through the year. It has a couple of museums. Lots of sports to attend. Concerts a couple times a semester. Activities are endless if you are searching for them.
Great for these types of students I think the University of Utah is great for all types of students. They have small classes and big classes. The have clubs for all types of people. They have opportunities for all types of people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The University gives each student attending a U-Book which contains 50 Ute traditions. The traditions include attending sports games and going to dances. They include volunteer opportunities and fundraisers. My favorite traditions are the ones where we compete against BYU.
Bang for the buck I couldn't be happier at the U. There are so many things to do. The resources on campus are amazing. The food is fantastic. There are so many ways to get involved. The Marriott Library is the most expensive thing in Utah and is fantastic. I love the U!
What to do for fun The University of Utah is located 10 minutes from downtown Salt Lake. There are always free events going on. There are movie theaters and shopping venues. There are lots of historic sights to go and enjoy. There are a lot of outdoor things to do while attending the U as well. Surrounding the campus is endless possibilities for hiking, biking, rock-climbing, and camping. The U has a place on campus that provides rental equipment for cheap. They also set up trips for the students. When winter rolls around the ski resorts open up providing endless amounts of fun. If downtown Salt Lake isn't gets too repetitious there are plenty of other cities close by that provide more fun.
Food and Dining There are so many choices for food on and off campus. There are several places to get food on campus. A few of the buildings have a huge area were all types of food can purchased. Throughout campus there are little cafes scattered about. Plus most building have vending machines. The food off campus is even better. There are several food joints directly off the U's campus that are fantastic, like the Pie. Being a full time student gives you access to take trax to down town Salt Lake where the variety of food is endless and amazing.
Dorm Life I didn't stay in the dorms, however, I did have friends that did. I was up at the dorms quite a bit. The dorms were built for the 2000 Olympic guests and it shows. Unlike most dorms where four people share one bathroom the dorms here are spacious and have two separate bathrooms. Because the dorms were built in 2000 they are newer and pretty clean. My friends really loved being in the dorms.
Academic Rigor The U has strict rules on academics and they adhere to them. It's nice to know that the college has standards that must be met and kept by the students and teachers. Having these rules lets the students know that the U means business and that the student must put in effort to become better.
Tips for prospective students The University of Utah is a big campus so be prepared for some lengthy walks between classes, especially in the winter. The U offers a variety of class sizes depending on the class which is helpful for students who learn in different class settings. Categories Comments Campus Safety I haven't seen or experienced anything unsafe here, I feel comfortable during any time of night or day. Utah is generally quite safe, but there are always exceptions.
Greek Life Thriving, hit up Greek Row if you want to check them out, they are friendly and fun.
Clubs and Activities If you want to get involved, there are multiple places, clubs, and ways that you can do so.
Great for these types of students Engineering. Outdoors enthusiasts. Pre-med and medical. Political science through the Hinkley Institute of Politics.
Bang for the buck Get a scholarship or get admitted into a research lab. It is slightly more pricy than other in-state options, but has more opportunities for overachieving students. With a scholarship, I plan on fully enjoying the options a top-tier state research institution has to offer me.
What to do for fun Ski. Intramural sports. Hang out with friends. Take a hike or a bike in the mountains. Utah is perhaps the best place for outdoor recreation.
Food and Dining Good on-campus and off of campus options.
Dorm Life Amazing. I am a student in the new Marriott Honors Community, which is an awesome experience for undergraduate Honors students.
Academic Rigor I am in the Honors College, and the classes progress quickly. General entry-level classes are slow, but that can be found anywhere.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to walk. It is a big campus, with big opportunities and a wide variety of classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Walking around campus I have never felt in danger. However if you do feel unsafe there are a ton of black police poles all around campus with one click of a button you will find a police to your location in roughly 17 seconds.
Greek Life I personally am not involved with the Greek life because the meeting times and socials conflict with my job to much. However I have always wanted to rush and join a sorority. I hear they are fun and I have met some girls who love it!
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs! At least one from every interest! My favorite club and activity is the MUSS, the Mighty Utah Student Section. They have one for every sport and it includes entrance to every home game, a pregame tail gate party, and a nice t shirt!
Great for these types of students Any Student who is serious about becoming successful but wants to still have a little fun. I am not going to lie to you, college is hard work and takes a lot of dedication to studying but the atmosphere on campus makes it fun. If you need a break from studying there is always something going on from a football game to a festival. It is great place to focus on education but still have fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I know a library is common on all campuses but the way the library is set up at the U of U is amazing! Its HUGE first of all, second of all their is a level with a lot of PC's and Mac's available for student use. There are a ton of areas specified for group study and individual study. If you are lucky ad get a seat by the big glass windows you get a beautiful view of campus. My favorite way to study is by grabbing a tea from the cafe down stairs and heading up to steal a seat by the window!
Bang for the buck Not only is the academics worth the money but the total experience is definitely worth the investment.
What to do for fun I love going to the football games with my MUSS pass I get into all home games and the energy in the stadium is awesome! You need to definitely get involved in campus clubs its a great way to meet new friends! Also go to crimson nights its so much fun with loud music and dancing!
Food and Dining Their is such a big variety from a healthy salad bar to a juicy hamburger and fries. The food is always ready and yummy!
Dorm Life The dorms are pretty nice for your first time away from home. You meet so many new people and its a wonderful opportunity!
Academic Rigor The technology is brand new and helps you better your educations, the professors are awesome, and there are many options you can use if you get confused like the free math tutoring center. The U of U is always doing research and learning more constantly.
Tips for prospective students Keep up with the work, a lot of professors teach right from the text book so read what you will go over in class the next day and that will help you follow along and not get confused in class. Also go to the football games or crimson nights or get involved in a club, you will meet a lot of people and feel apart of campus.
In three sentences I love the University of Utah. It has top of the line buildings and a ton of technology available to students. The professors at Utah are top of the line and awesome.

Categories Comments Greek Life Growing, is the best way to describe the Greek system at the U. With the biggest group of recruits in a long time the program. Personally joining a fraternity was the best decision I have ever made. It's help me build a connection with campus organizations, companies in the Salt Lake area, and with beautiful sorority girls.
Food and Dining The food services on campus are fantastic. I am an employee for the company that runs all the food services on campus and they allow for a lot of individualism in your choice for meals. With two main eating areas for freshman there is always something that you are hungry for at anytime.
Dorm Life There is always something going on at the dorms at the U. The housing department celebrates holidays in funky fashions, there are movie nights every week with films that have just been recently released from theater, and not to mention Crimson nights which is a giant dance party thrown by student council.
Academic Rigor Each department and each teacher has a different standard and way of going about grading your performance in class. The constant transitions of online homework databases is difficult to get used to, but once you do life becomes easier and school becomes more controllable.
Tips for prospective students Go Greek or join a group around campus, its an easy way to expand your friend base and to get actively involved around campus. There are study groups everywhere on campus and each department has a study room where you can get help from graduate students acting as TAs for the professors.
In three sentences The University of Utah is a great experience from all of the activities that are put on by ASUU to the many athletic student sections you can join there is a place for you. The academics are expanding vastly, thanks to the Pac-12 money that is rolling for the next few years. You will find a place to fit in anywhere on campus it's like being a part of a giant family.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are Blue Lights everywhere. That means you push a button on a pole and it calls the cops for you.
Bang for the buck I think it's definitely worth it, but it's DEFINITELY pricey. That's college life, though.
What to do for fun Get involved! You'll hear it all the time and for good reason. I'm doing marching band right now, but there's a club for almost any interest. If, by chance, there isn't a club you're interested in, you can pitch a club to the student council and they'll give you $5000 to get started.
Food and Dining The dining hall can get repetitive, but the other dining options on campus are a great way to spice things up.
Dorm Life Dorm life is a gooooooood time. I'm living on campus and having a blast.
Academic Rigor The teachers are great and will really push you. But if that's not your thing, there are easier courses and professors.
Tips for prospective students Apply, apply, apply for scholarships. Every penny will count.
In three sentences The University of Utah is very diverse. It's full of opportunity for pretty much anything and everything you can think of. It's a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of work.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are emergency phones posted everywhere and campus security is constantly making their rounds. There is really no reason to feel unsafe on campus.
Greek Life Doesn't apply to me..but I bet it is fun.
Clubs and Activities The first week of school all the clubs and Greeks are out in booths and they are all very friendly and encourage you to join. The University is really into have the students be involved on campus.
Great for these types of students Any kind of student would fit in well at the University of Utah. We are most know for our health care, but our other majors are just as great!
Bang for the buck College is expensive, and the U is no exception. But considering how much other schools will cost, it is definitely worth it.
What to do for fun You are in downtown Salt Lake... What ISN'T there to do? The University also has great events they advertise all the time.
Food and Dining There are lots of places to eat around campus, and it is not just cafeteria food. Great food at good prices.
Dorm Life Not appllicable to me..
Academic Rigor Work hard, study hard, and you will retain what you learn.
Tips for prospective students Learn your directions. Buildings on campus don't have to be a pain to find if you take the time to learn where you are, and where you need to go first.
In three sentences Wonderful. Absolutely love it here. It is an amazing school with incredible professors.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are so many things to do for fun! They have crimson nights, football games, dances, and so many more activities throughout the year! Just get involved and meet new people and make new friends. Have fun to get your mind off the pure stress of college. If you get out and have fun sometimes you will do far better in classes. You wont be so stressed.
Food and Dining They have great food! The only problem is its so pricy. I can only eat at school every once in awhile because I don't have enough money to eat there everyday. I would suggest bringing food from home and snacks for throughout the day. The food is delicious but just to much for my wallet everyday! With us being poor college students and all.
Dorm Life I didn't stay in a dorm here. I stayed home with my parents. But I really do wish that I would of stayed in a dorm. Then I would be more involved in school functions and things. Which I really do miss living clear in Layton.
Academic Rigor The Rigor of this courses is pretty great! I went to Weber for a few years and this school is definatly harder then Weber was. But I feel like you get a much better education at Utah then I did at Weber State. Weber was to easy for me, and Utah gives me that challenge I need.
Tips for prospective students There are many tips I would give these students! The number one tip is do not miss class and do not get behind. Once your behind your done for. There is no catching back up again. Also do all your required homework and study at least 2 hours per credit hour a week. So if you are taking 12 credit hours you need to study at least 24 hours a week. Just don't get behind, and be sure to participate in school activities. Keep involved in school.
In three sentences I love this university and recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality education. This courses aren't for the lazy type though. You need to be sure to work hard and actually learn while going to class this isn't high school anymore.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is a large campus and can be intimidating to walk around at night. However, there is a campus security escort service you can call to walk you home, and there are emergency poles that will flash if you push the button and someone will call you.
Greek Life There are many of sororities and fraternities to choose from. Rush is usually around the second or third week. Their housing is on the NW end of campus.
Clubs and Activities There are over 500 clubs at the University. There is always something going on so you just have to look!
Great for these types of students People who like cities, lots of people, large campus, and having fun!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This isn't unusual stuff, but I thought I'd share it: Use UTA! It's free and convenient. Don't overload your schedule, and when living on campus don't over pack! If looking for a job, on campus opportunities are the best, as well as participating in on campus research. You get paid for both and they're flexible with your schedule. It's a fun place to be! I highly recommend it.
Bang for the buck Tuition isn't that bad as long as you find scholarships and grants. They're in more places than you would think. Look for items online before buying them from the campus store. Sign up for the free Amazon student trial. when buying books from there. It gives you two day shipping for six months, but make sure you opt out of the automatic upgrade.
What to do for fun There is always some sort of party going on at the U! Salt Lake itself has tons of stuff. There's the zoo, Red Butte Gardens, lots of stuff downtown. The Gateway and City Creek shopping centers are right along the Trax stop.
Food and Dining The Heritage Center is near the dorms and is where you'll use your meal plan. The Union also has a variety. BUT eating on campus probably isn't the best option. Just down the road(accessible by Trax) are many options from fast food to dine in. And if you don't like anything on 400 South Salt Lake is full of options! Also, the Smith's Marketplace is right next to one of the Trax stops, and is basically a smaller version of Wal Mart.
Dorm Life There are many options for living on campus. However, if you rent an apartment you probably won't need a meal plan. They're very expensive and unless you'll use it it's not worth your money. The RHA always hosts events(with food) so look out for those. If planning on living in the dorms, just know that Chapel Glen tends to be full of party-ers.
Academic Rigor I'm only a freshman so I haven't quite experienced the full rigor of classes, but make sure you look up professors on ratemyprofessors.com! It tells about them and their classes!
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of all the on-campus helps, such as the tutoring and writing centers. Be involved! Sign up for as many groups as you can handle. It will not only help you make friends, but allow you to know all the activities hosted for student, which usually means free food.
In three sentences There are so many options available at the University of Utah, whether in research, study abroad, or just education. The University itself is very diverse with many opportunities, as is Salt Lake City, which has an endless supply of activities. There is always something to do on campus to get students involved, and overall it is a very beneficial and engaging university to attend.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is no drug, no alcohol. So it is pretty much safe but you would want to pay attention to the bikers, or skateboarders.
Clubs and Activities I can't even tell you how many activities and clubs that they provide. There are so many to choose from and there are all good!
Bang for the buck If you are an international student, it is going to be expensive. It is at least 10 times more than the resident fee plus, it requires a special student insurance which is also expensive. However, they do provide a House billing contract that if you have lived in UT for 3 years, I think, then you can pay the residence fee.
Food and Dining It has a variety of food that you can choose from. You can eat delicious food and it is nutritious!
Dorm Life It has a great cafeteria, and an easy way of riding free shuttles. It is pretty much kept clean outside and the inside depends on the student
Academic Rigor For me, it was really hard at first but they do provide many tutoring sessions, discussions, and review sessions that you can take a huge advantage of, Also, there are professors hours when you can directly go and ask a question to the teacher!
In three sentences It has many departments that will provide free tutoring sessions, discussion sessions, and review sessions that you can choose according to your learning style

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel very safe. There are campus police and the environment promotes a feeling of security. There are many resources for assault and other incidents.
Bang for the buck Even on a scholarship out of state tuition is out of control. I am learning so much that I definitely still think it's worth it. If you are on in-state tuition it is no doubt worth it.
What to do for fun Football games are awesome. Join the Mighty Utah Student Section (MUSS). There are also many other events with free food and low prices for students. Check the events calendar!
Food and Dining I have celiac disease and rarely eat on campus but there are many options. Multiple locations make grabbing a bite to eat very convenient.
Dorm Life I have heard the dorms are way fun but as I said, very pricey.
Academic Rigor All my classes push me and my teachers are very interesting. Biology with Temme is hard because he is very conceptual but I am learning so much.
Tips for prospective students Go check out the campus and housing options nearby. On-campus housing would definitely be the most convenient but it is expensive. Living off-campus, I am paying about half as much so it's definitely worth the distance.
In three sentences I love my classes and professors here at the U. There is always some awesome event going on that I want to attend. The trickiest part is figuring out parking and how to get around campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Hiking behind the dorms where the Wasatch Mts. are. Work/volunteer at one of the two on-campus edible gardens. Join the ballroom team or debate club.
Bang for the buck The volunteer center was wonderful. It allows you to start you own programs, be a part of endless projects, apply for internships and positions. I took full advantage of it.
What to do for fun On-campus gardening, play on the ultimate Frisbee team, go to on-campus events such as dances, moving, speeches, hike behind campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have not seen anything go wrong on the campus. I feel very safe just walking around the campus, even when I have been stuck in a lab until midnight and had to walk to the track system.
Greek Life The Greek life from what I have seen was normal, I didn't get into the Greek life myself but I have heard a lot of good things about it.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs and activities for all types of people from someone that wants to be in a snowboarding club to school council to someone that likes to play video games or design robots.
Great for these types of students The University of Utah is great for students that have their education a number one priority but would still enjoy having fun. The campus has a great combination of classes and fun events.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I can not think of any unusual traditions or locations on campus other than the beautiful view of being on the side of a Utah mountain.
Bang for the buck This is a great college and you will be able to fulfill any college education that you are looking for and for a decent price.
What to do for fun There are a lot of things to do at the University of Utah for fun. You have the great city of Salt Lake City there to do what ever you would like with the track system being able to take you anywhere. You also have a great low priced bowling alley, ping pong, pool, and many other things to do in the lunch area on campus. There are also many more activities that go on campus through out the year that are a blast.
Food and Dining I have not had much of the University of Utah's food but from what I have had there are no complaints.
Dorm Life I was only in the dorms for a very short period of time and have only returned to hang out with some friends of mine, but the experiance there has been great. They have a great area to watch tv, play pool and do many other things. The students are also very friendly and very easy to make friends.
Academic Rigor Classes at the University of Utah as I said before are top of the line.
Tips for prospective students I would give the suggestion of making sure that you are going to school for the education and make sure you are going to work hard. The University of Utah has the top of the line classes so of course they are going to be more difficult, so make sure you focus on your schooling and study.

Dorm Life I'm not sure since I am a commuter.
Academic Rigor It's not too bad but I'm also taking required classes that are purely review for me.

Greek Life Wasn't involved.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs and ways to get involved on campus. You have to pay attention to flyers and actually act on them and attend the meetings, but it is great for networking!
Great for these types of students Liberal, hard working, open-minded, enjoy having fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You can go out on the top of the physics building roof (it is usually unlocked) and look out. I think they use it at night sometimes to look at the stars.
Bang for the buck It was relatively inexpensive for an out of state student, although that was still expensive for someone trying to avoid student loans. I really enjoyed the education I received here and as an in state student now, I really think it would be worth going back! Great education for a great price!
What to do for fun In the spring, you will see students tight-rope walking across trees on campus. I always got a kick out of that. Football games are always fun in the giant Rice-Eclees stadium. The MUSS is the student section and they get really riled up each game. In the winter there are ski and snowboarding resorts a short drive away.
Food and Dining The pizza pie cafe right off campus is tasty and fun! They also have cafes around campus and grocery stores nearby. I don't think I ever ate at the cafeteria on campus but it smelled good!
Dorm Life I was never in the dorms, but they are close to campus and seem nice.
Academic Rigor I know there are harder schools out there, so that is the reason for the 4 star, but I learned so much at this school. The physics, chemistry, and calculus (2&3) classes were the most difficult for me.
Tips for prospective students Study hard and try to stay ahead on all of your classes. Know now that you will need to dedicate hours each day to studying. It really makes a difference to research the best teachers before signing up for classes. Don't pick the easy teachers, but go for ones that will teach you the most and best.
In three sentences The University of Utah is a very liberal, fun, challenging school that I will always be proud to have attended. Food and Dining The on campus food options have shown a marked improvement in the three years that I've been here. They are cognizant of the student voice and address student concerns when they can.
Dorm Life Live on campus if you can! The residence halls are full of activities and are a great way to establish a new social circle.
Academic Rigor I think that this will obviously vary between departments and professors. Overall I have found that my professors have very clear expectations on what the requirements are for any given class.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus and talk to your advisor for your intended degree. They can often help you plan out your courses or connect you to scholarships that most of the student population isn't aware of.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is campus security and kiosks that you can call them from all over campus. I have never felt unsafe, even after leaving night classes. The campus is located on the upper east side of the city (the nice part), so there isn't much crime. Plus, this is Utah (one of the safest places on earth).
Great for these types of students The U is great for students who want a reasonably priced education, quality instructors and a large scope of educational fields to explore.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is the MUSS (the football student group) which has been really active since our football team has won championships over the past few years and made it into the PAC 12 conference
Bang for the buck I had a special deal since my parents are professors (half off tuition), but if I didn't get that I would say that the in state tuition is very reasonable for the quality and prestige of the education.
What to do for fun I enjoy reading! I can get totally carried away.
Food and Dining One can get board with anything pretty quickly, but as a whole the dorm food is really good and the cafeteria on campus has a lot of food vendors that offer great meals (especially the Chinese station and the sandwich bar). I wish there was a better salad bar though.
Dorm Life I lived in the dorms during my entire study at the U and loved it. The rates are pretty inexpensive, the dorms are right on campus, plus there is a shuttle system that makes getting to any class a 5 or 10 minute commute. The dorms were built new 5 years ago and are very clean and well kept. I have lived in the single dorms where I share a bathroom with just one other girl.
Academic Rigor Many of the prerequisites and general classes are moderately challenging, the average student putting in a few hours of homework a week and showing up to class can pass. More challenging courses are offered within competitive majors and in specialized upper division classes. As always, the difficulty of a class depends mostly on the professor.
Tips for prospective students The best tip I have as a senior is to try new classes, don't rule out a class because you think that you're no interested in the subject. I'm applying for graduate programs in economics, a field I hope to work in for the rest of my life, based off of having to take a required intro to micro and macro economics my freshman year when doing a business major. My best advice is keep your mind open and follow what you feel passionate about.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are endless options for fun on campus, seriously. From quarterly concerts that bring bands such as Cobra Starship or Wiz Khalifa (for free) it is a fantastic way to have fun. There is also a lounge in the Student Union and you can play video games or even bowl virtually anytime you like. Fun is all over campus you just have to know what you like and then ask where the club or activity is held.
Food and Dining There are many food options at the University of Utah from pizza to Chinese food. All the food is very delicious from my perspective but the only thing I do not like is how expensive it is. Besides the prices the food and places to eat are great.
Dorm Life I have not lived in the dorms to vouch for them but from what I hear it is fabulous.
Academic Rigor Such great classes and professors at the university. Not all classes are taught the same and most are very hands on allowing students to write their own theory papers or make presentations. The class room environments are overall incredibly open-minded and encourage you to speak up and ask questions to better your education.
Tips for prospective students Ride the Trax train and do not drive up when you have class, it will save you time and money. Take advantage of the free tutoring offered for subjects such as math, science and English, trust me private tutors are quite expensive. Last but not least get involved, there are many clubs such as marketing club or diversity club that can help you adapt into university life.
In three sentences The University of Utah is a fantastic university to attend because they have such a variety of degrees and graduate programs to be apart of. They provide a U-card that allows you to ride the public transportation Trax train to help you get to school, for free! The University of Utah also has many forums and activities to constantly provide knowledge and fun, really a great university!

Categories Comments What to do for fun The mountains are really close to campus so you can always go on hikes during the summer, fall or spring. Winter time it is easy to go skiing or snowboarding and most of the resorts are less than 2 hours away. Downtown, City Creek and Gateway have a lot of stores and places to eat and they are less than a half hour away. On campus, there is the Union building that has activities such as pool, ping pong, and bowling. These are just a few options in SLC. The U is fairly close to all the attractions in SLC.
Food and Dining The food and dining is descent. For meal plans, the food is cafeteria food so it isnt going to change to much where you go to college. For other places on campus, there are a few places to eat that have quality food. There are places that you can eat at such as caputo's and a few others that are really good. The HC (heritage center) is where most students go to eat for their cafeteria food.
Dorm Life The honors dorms at the U are really nice. If you can make it into the Honors program and get in the dorms, it is worth it. The dorms are overall fairly good. It is easier to meet new people because everyone living on campus is in the same boat as you. You, and everyone else in the dorms most likely wont have many friends so it is easier to meet new people. The dorms are all relatively close to campus and there is a shuttle system if you dont want to walk.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging and expect you to put time and effort into the work you do, but it is made possible to get good grades. If you put in a little bit of work, you will do alright. It is not like high school though, you will have to work harder for your grades and be prepared to have a lot of your grades based on tests. If the work is put forth toward your classes, you will learn a lot of useful and practical information. If you plan to not work a little bit, dont expect a 4.0
Tips for prospective students The weather gets cold in the winter, but fall and spring are perfect. Utah is great for outdoors activities in both summer and winter. If you are looking to go to a good school with lots to do, the U is a great place. It is a top school with incredible programs for all degree types. Be prepared to deal with snow and cold during the winter and to walk around campus.
In three sentences A great campus with lots of friendly people. Exciting and fun campus. Great teachers with experience and willingness to help you when you need it. There are lots of resources available for students of all times and for anything you care about.

Great for these types of students This school is great for any type of student. Many people are very outgoing and love the outdoors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can only enter housing with your Ucard and it only works for your specific building, so you don't have to worry about creeps coming in. During the winter the always put salt on all the sidewalks so you won't slip and fall. You're safe here.
Clubs and Activities At the beginning of each semester there is welcome week. During this week a bunch of clubs set up booths in front of the union where you can sign up for clubs and the greek life. So It really isn't hard to get involved.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are none that I really know of yet.
Bang for the buck Things can be a little on the hefty side, but you get some awesome discounts at restaurants for being a student! An extra bonus is that you get free UTA services with your Ucard- I always carry that around with me.
What to do for fun The U always has things to do, plus it's located in Salt Lake City and there are loads of stuff you can do in SLC. There are party's every week, social games to attend, seminars, school games, dances, and more. Outside of campus you have pretty much everything else: skiing, snowboarding, paint balling, sledding, ice skating, skating, etc.
Food and Dining Their food is good and they have multiple choices to choose from, but after awhile it's pretty much the same thing; you eventually get tired of it. It is pretty expensive and each meal plan is around 3,000 dollars a semester. It's important to remember that you are required to have a meal plan if you live in housing without a kitchen.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty relaxed. There are some really cool students here at the U and if you're lucky, like I was, you'll get an awesome roommate. Be aware that there is smoking and beer even though the University of Utah is considered a dry campus, but no one ever forces it on you. You don't ever have to worry about peer pressure on that matter.
Academic Rigor The difficulty level of each class really depends on the teacher and on the class. It also depends on how willing your are to put in effort and how willing you are to attend extra help classes (TA sessions). You get what you put in so keep that in mind.
Tips for prospective students My tips to incomers is be informed. Know how much tuition is going to be and know how much housing will cost per semester, remember dining is included in that bill. I also recommend looking up your classes, that way it's easier to find you classes on campus. At first it may be overwhelming, but trust me you'll get the hang of it.
In three sentences University of Utah is a great school! I can't imagine having attended a different university and I'm very satisfied with my choice to come here. I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I've never felt threatened or scared ever on campus, even when I had night classes. There are help call boxes located around the campus and supposedly cops, although I've never seen them.
Greek Life I don't belong to any , so I can't give personal experience. But classmates have mentioned how much they like it and how well they are set up.
Clubs and Activities So many different clubs that you can become involved in. Anything you want, you are almost guaranteed to be able to find here.
Great for these types of students People who are fond of diversity or belong to a minority group should love the U's atmosphere. Also, football fans. Really good medical and science programs for students interested in that.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Pie is a great pizzeria with awesome food and an even more awesome atmosphere. Many people's favorite. The U is also pretty fun for football fans. We have a strong rivalry with BYU which is cool during the football season.
Bang for the buck It seems a little expensive at first, but when you figure it all the cool student discounts you get throughout the valley, it's pretty nice. You even get a free trax pass to use for transportation.
What to do for fun On campus, there are plenty of clubs and groups you can join and become involved in; everything from sports to drama to art. Different clubs also constantly sponsor movie nights or parties that any student can go to. Off campus, there is skiing/snowboarding in the winter months. Summer has lots of wonderful climbing/hiking opportunities.
Food and Dining Yum! Food is great. Campus has a food court with lots of different foods. Plus there are any small diners within walking distance that are fantastic. Personal favorite: The Pie!
Dorm Life I myself don't live on campus, so I don't have any first hand experience, but everything I hear from friends and classmates are positive. They all really like the dorms- they are clean and friendly and large enough for a student to live comfortably in.
Academic Rigor Most classes are really challenging, but not unnecessarily so. Some are not very good or harder than they need to be. But mostly if you attend class and pay attention you will do well.
Tips for prospective students The U offers way more than just classes. I'd recommend checking out all the clubs/ groups they have on campus to really become a part of the school and to get any extra help you may need.
In three sentences It is highly diverse. The classes are very in-depth and challenging. The teachers tend to be incredibly helpful.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Downtown Salt Lake is just a short trax ride away, so there is plenty to do, including two malls and a bunch of movie theaters. Also on campus there is a bowling alley and of course, the parties.
Food and Dining There are plenty of food options on campus, for those with a meal plan and those without. The Heritage Center has the main dining hall for those living in the dorms. The Union building has plenty of different eating options, including Jamba Juice. Plus, in select building, there are cafe's or mini mart type things..
Dorm Life Dorm life here on campus isn't too bad. The rooms are comfortably big and the food is pretty good. Plus, for the most part, the dorms are pretty mellow. No crazy parties at three in the morning. Not on a school night at least. Also, all the dorms are within walkin distance of every building on campus.
Academic Rigor Most of the classes that I've taken here at the U have been very challenging but veyr rewarding. They require going to class, studying outside of class, and actual effort. However, getting that A feels that much better because of it.
Tips for prospective students My tips would be to try living on campus your first year. It's expensive, but it's the best way to meet new people and to learn about the layout of the school. After living there for a year you'll feel more comfortable finding classes when you don't live on campus and you'll have friends that you met outside of classes.
In three sentences I would rate the U as an 8 out of10. I choose this because the teachers are great, the dorms are decent, and shuttles from the dorms to various places on campus are easy to figure out. However, if you don't live on campus, parking is expensive and it's hard to find unless you get there before eight in the morning.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is good.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of options--and students have the ability to create their own clubs.
Great for these types of students Pre-med and other pre-health care field studies. I am pre-OT and I feel have a great foundation for graduate studies. I can tell my human anatomy class was far and away better than what students at other universities studied.
Bang for the buck Great value. I think tuition for a full time student is less than 13,500 a year, and any classes beyond 16 credits are free. There are a number of grants, work-study and other financial aid available.
What to do for fun There are a ton of on campus activities and clubs. Utah in general is an awesome place to live if you like to ski, snowshoe, run, hike or rock climb/
Food and Dining Okay. I wish there were healthier options availabe. Most prepackaged sandwiches and other options contain dairy. It seems to be easier to get fast food, like panda express, on campus.
Dorm Life Never lived in the dorms, but I have friends who love it.
Academic Rigor My other undergraduate college was more difficult overall, although prepared to be challenged by any pre-med or science class. I've been told the P.A. and medical programs are notoriously competitive.
Tips for prospective students Show up for class every day. I've noticed the students who do not do well are the ones who attend class the least. Talk to teachers and tutors when you first begin to struggle.
In three sentences I have been impressed by the U so far. It is huge, and class sizes are always really large, but I have had excellent teachers overall. Libraries, computers and support systems have been great as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Students are made aware what to do if they feel unsafe. There are signs posted with numbers for students to call and other resources. Security maintains a presence there and I've always felt safe on campus.
Great for these types of students Science and Health majors, for sure.
Bang for the buck Absolutely! Tuition is modest (compared to most other schools) and the instructors take the extra steps with students. Plus, the facilities are always nicely maintained and the campus is very clean.
What to do for fun Lots of places for free time. Most students frequent The Pie for it's one-of-a-kind pizzas and for the atmosphere. With the light rail that runs through the campus, students are connected to the whole valley with plenty of options for recreation, like snowboarding, the museum, movie theaters, etc.
Food and Dining Best salad bar EVER!! The cafeteria is clean and the staff are courteous. The views from the cafeteria are amazing and it's got a warm, updated atmosphere.
Dorm Life Dorms are clean, students are quite and generally follow guidelines. Never felt uncomfortable or unwelcome. Very friendly and safe environment.
Academic Rigor Lots of studying with challenging material, but some classes require less of your time than others.
Tips for prospective students Take the time to make yourself aware of all the resources available to you, through the Student Center and your academic advisers.

Greek Life The Greek life here isn't a huge part but it is definitely present. There are 6 sororites and more fraternities. The houses are beautiful, but it is expensive. Not as expensive as other schools but still pricey.
Clubs and Activities ASUU (student government), Greek Life, Freshman Council, MUSS board
Great for these types of students Liberal, Mormon (I know these two things don't usually mix - but this is a very diverse campus), people who like the outdoors
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You can hike to the U which gets lit up at night.
Bang for the buck You get the city life and a good education while staying in the mountains.
What to do for fun Everyone ski's and snowboards. There are lots of Greek parties if you're into that. There's always something going on.
Food and Dining The cafeteria serves decent food, it just gets old! There is a panda express and Jamba Juice on campus and you can use a meal from your meal plan there! There is also a restaurant that accepts your meal plan - pretty cool.
Dorm Life Everyone is super friendly and the dorms are really nice compared to other schools! My only problem is there is no kitchen, not even a community one! You are forced to have a meal plan and eat at the HC (cafeteria), which gets old.
Academic Rigor It really depends on the class you're taking, some are easy and some are extremely challenging. My biology class was near impossible while my writing class was a walk in the park.
Tips for prospective students Join the honors program if you can! Join clubs and get involved - seriously - the school is so big it can be intimidating to make friends. Make sure you're prepared for the winter months!
