    Tips for prospective students

    College is all about balancing a full schedule of work and play so that you can enjoy yourself in all areas of life without burning out and failing, just like in real life! So, work hard and study for your classes. Go out on the weekends or join one of UVA's many clubs and organizations. Just don't let one aspect of your life affect another. If you keep it at a happy medium, you're more likely to stay calm and, well, happy!

    Virginia's academic program has been described as rivaling some private universities' curricula, and you get to experience it at a public school price! The educational, social, and overall experiences at UVA are worth every cent of your tuition, but if it is necessary that you apply for financial aid, be very careful as you fill out your FAFSA (Federal Application for Student Aid) form. Due to a complex home situation this past year, I missed out on financial aid opportunities for the upcoming 2009-10 school year. Bottom line: UVA is worth its price tag, but it wouldn't hurt to fill out some scholarships either.

    I've heard several people say Charlottesville is such a college town, meaning there's not much to do off-grounds. FALSE. Charlottesville is so much more than the University. With the pedestrian Downtown Mall (including two cinemas, one theater, and its very own ice rink), two more ordinary malls, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, more restaurants per capita than New York City, and Carter Mountain Orchard for apple picking excursions, Charlottesville is so much more than your typical college town. There's something happening every minute, so schedule accordingly. That being said, relaxing in your dorm room every once in a while will not be frowned upon.
    Am learning a lot

    The great thing about UVA is that it is a public research university - meaning its resources attract the big names in most fields of study. This is great for you, the student, because you get to learn under such academics as Rita Dove and Larry Sabato. A caveat: UVA has a single sanction Honor Code. If you lie, cheat, or steal, you will be tried by a jury of your peers and if found guilty of a non-trivial offense, you will be expelled. Virginia expects a lot from her students academically, but if you put the time and energy into it, your efforts will be rewarded.

    Everyone finds a spot here. It can take some time, but you'll find your place!
    Tips for prospective students

    Work hard, play hard, that's our motto. Always look up your professors online before you sign up for their class just to get an idea of what kind of work you'll be facing. Plan your schedule with alternative classes because I guarantee you, you won't get all the classes you want first semester. When you arrive, take a chance to explore the Grounds with your hallmates: they will be your life force! Don't forget you'll be living with them for 9 months! Another tip: Don't fall behind on your readings!! This is the most important thing you must learn if you attend UVA. There is a lot of reading, definitely more than 200 pages a week, depending on what classes you take (don't take literature and history in the same semester if you can't handle more than 500 pages a week). Definitely join some clubs and make friends that have similar interests. Remember: Work hard, play hard. Finish your work and have some fun!

    How can you not love it? Everyone is friendly because they want make friends like everyone else. You're not the only one who is nervous!Head to the Corner or Downtown for some food (try the dumplings!) Rent a movie from Clemons, go shopping for your family at Mincers, and buy a cute dress at Duo or Finch.
    Am learning a lot

    So many classes, so little time! Take the classes that interest you the most. To be honest, if you can't handle AP classes in high school, I suggest you look at another school. I know most of you are excited about taking notes on your laptop, but high school was right: Writing it out makes it stick in your head easier.

    Make sure you are willing to put in the work it takes to get good grades here because a degree from the University of Virginia is going to do fantastic things for your future.
    Am learning a lot

    I'm in the engineering program at the University of Virginia, and I have learned something new in each in every one of my classes so far. Engineering classes can be challenging, and so can the classes in the college. Be ready to study and ready to learn.

    UVA is great for anybody, I believe. There are so many great things offered by The University, and I have not met a single person while here who doesn't absolutely love it.
    Tips for prospective students

    One thing that prospective students should do is definitely visit all of the schools that they are applying to and never base your opinion of a school off of stereotypes and what they hear from other people. I had my heart set on going to another school from the 4th grade all the way through the first semester of my senior year of high school. I actually almost refused to even visit UVA. However, my mom made me visit and I took the opportunity to stay overnight to sort of see what it was like to live there, and I fell in love. I would say to definitely take advantage of any over-night stays or programs being offered at prospective schools. Make sure to ask lots of questions on tours and sit in on a couple of classes and talk to professors if you can.

    The one and only problem I have with UVA is that I feel like as a first year I paid entirely too much for my meal plan. UVA's dining facilities are nice and the food is quite good, but I did not agree with the price of the meal plan (it comes out to about 8 dollars a meal). There wasn't a problem until I visited friends at other schools and realized that they were only paying about 4-5 dollars per meal. Other than that, I think that for the amazing quality of education received, facilities and wonderful programs, UVA is quite the bargain. I definitely agree with what some say about The University: Public tuition for private education.
    Am enjoying being here

    Chalottesville is absolutely amazing. I love how I always feel completely safe walking around Grounds at any time of the day. Also, there is always something to do. Whether it be taking the trolley to the Downtown Mall or the bus to Barracks (another shopping center) or just walking down The Corner to get a bagel at Bodo's, my friends and I never feel bored while at The University. The Grounds are beautiful, and I also feel like UVA is just the right size. I am able to see people I've never met before each day, but I also always run into a friend. It's a tight-knit community of like-minded people who want to do well and have goals but also want to enjoy themselves. It's really nice to be surrounded by that balance. Lastly (and most importantly) UVA has a wonderful community and system of trust. The Honor Code at The University keeps order and makes everyone living within the community feel safe and able to trust their peers at all times. UVA is absolutely wonderful and I cannot picture myself anywhere else.
    Am learning a lot

    The University offers a wide variety of course-work and majors. I am often overwhelmed (in a very good way) by the courses being offered each semester and am faced with a tough decision when it comes to choosing which ones to take. The professors are great and are always available to listen during their office hours. Every professor I've had has shown great enthusiasm for their subject and great care for their students' well-being. Also, there is a very wide variety of clubs to join. I've been able to learn so much about different service organizations and get involved not only in the Charlottesville community but also the world. There are also tons of other fun clubs that offer new hobbies. I personally joined Baking Club and Salsa Club. Learning new, fun and relaxing things while making friends is one of the best parts of UVA.

    UVA is a public university and houses every type of person imaginable - everyone will find a crowd to hang with. But also, Charlottesville is a bit of a ritzy city. As a general stereotype, many UVA students are wealthy, preppy, and from Northern Virginia. However, there are many students that don't fit this bill and who have found a place here. UVA is great for students who love to work hard. The courses are hard and studying is a big part of the UVA culture. Partying is as well, especially on the weekends.
    Tips for prospective students

    Come see the campus, instead of applying blind. The grounds are beautiful and a big part of what most Wahoos love about UVA. Also, UVA is a public university and has many types of students, so everyone can find a way to fit in here. Lastly, if you get waitlisted and really want to attend UVA, don't just sit around and wait. Make a case with the admissions office and tell them how much you want to go to Virginia. The admissions office loves to accept students who are passionate about the school.

    Attending the University of Virginia is well worth the tuition bills. Also, the University is very good about giving students financial aid who need it. Although, Charlottesville is an expensive city in general, so that should be taken into consideration when choosing a college.

    The University of Virginia is not only amazing academically, but it's located in Charlottesville, a wonderful city, and the campus is beautiful and a perfect size for a university. There is never a dull moment in Charlottesville - there are always lots of community events happening downtown and on campus. There's a lot of school spirit as well, which adds to the feeling of community here on campus.
    Am learning a lot

    The courses here are very rigorous and challenging, but if you love to learn and work hard, then UVA is the place for you. The professors and even the TAs are all very knowledgeable about their subjects and are always available to help you with you work. As with most colleges, there is a core curriculum that every student has to fulfill, which allows you to study things you may not have. Basically at UVA, you get as much out of the classes as you put into them.

    Get involved early! At the Activities Fair in the fall, find some organizations and sign up. Go to the interest meetings and if you like what you see/hear, join the group!

    Tips for prospective students

    Come visit the campus! I knew I wanted to come after seeing how beautiful the campus was and realizing it did not feel as big as it is. Try to come visit on a day when you can also come see a sporting event or listen to an a cappella group so that you can get a glimpse at some UVA traditions!

    UVA is a top-ranked school, but it is a public college, so it is not as expensive as many of the top schools. Though I am not part of it, I have friends who say the financial aid program is very helpful.

    I love the campus and have met a lot of incredible people. There are so many different clubs and activities to be involved in that you can find the perfect fit for you. I am from a small school, so it is a little hard to adjust to such a large school where you do not really see the same people all the time.
    Am learning a lot

    Because this is such a big school, there is a large variety of different class choices and you are very likely to be able to get into a class you want to take. I have been able to take some fun classes my high school did not offer, like Economics or Studies in Drama. I also learned a lot more in one semester of French here than I did in three years at high school.

    I'd say that UVa is for those who are serious about learning, but not too serious to not have fun every once in a while! You must be a willing student who wants to take the time to read the textbooks and study hard for tests.

    Don't be afraid to go to college! I know that in high school I was SO ready to get out of there and out of my house. I needed something new. But when the time came for me to actually pack my bags and boxes and head down to Charlottesville, it was terrifying! In no time though, I realized that I had nothing to be afraid of, because UVa was awesome and was everything I was looking forward to in a college :)

    Though I did get a couple scholarships coming into college, UVa is definitely worth what you pay, especially for an in-state student. The experience here is so valuable that I couldn't even put a price tag on it... even though there is one!

    I could not imagine going to any other college! Wahoowa! At first, the idea of going to college was scary. But once I had spent a week here I really found that it fit everything I was looking for in a college. Though there are SO MANY fun activities to take part in, the thing that I loved the most was that you can tell that everyone is very dedicated to their studies and their education. Another thing that I love is that you are able to see so many different people when you look around. The location of UVa is ideal also, with many shopping centers close by.
    Am learning a lot

    Being in college in the first place has given me the opportunity to learn many new things about being independent and about life. I have learned many essential things about living on my own-- especially how to make many interesting and creative microwavable meals and how to do my own laundry! As far as classes go, each and every professor and teacher's assistant are very qualified to teach the classes. Many of the professors are actually the authors of their own textbooks, so you know that they really know what they're talking about!

    UVa is great for students who are determined to succeed. UVa is a very rigorous school and needs students with strong academics and who are well rounded in their lives. UVa wants to see students who take leadership positions and are leaders of their communities. If you're thinking that UVa is all about partying, you are mistaking. Yes, college students party...UVa students do, why not? but it's not only about partying and having fun, it's about being well rounded and having your life balanced.
    Tips for prospective students

    UVa is a top notch school, GPA is important and so are the SATs, but also your extra curricular activities! Take All the AP Courses your school offers or as many as you can handle. Study for the exams, get a 5 and you will be exempted form a lot of courses that you do not want to take as an incoming first year. One of them is Chemistry. Once you get in, studying doesn't stop. Stay on top of your academics and you will go well academically and you will be able to enjoy your life at UVa a lot more than people who cram all their studying at the last minute!

    I love being at The University of Virginia. I love the people, the teachers, classes, professors, school, school spirit, love for our community and the sense of safety we have because of honor code. When I was in high school, I never really had any Hispanic friends, but when I came to UVa, a lot of Latinos became my best friends. I don't know what I would do with out them. After every week of hard work I enjoy spending it with my friends. Together have the most epic times of the entire school! I would love you come visit and experience what the WAHOOWA experience is really like. There is so much to do at UVa, but unfortunately there are only 24 in a day. I wish days were longer so that I could study and do everything that UVA offers for its students :)
    Am learning a lot

    I am learning a whole lot in the Engineering School at The University of Virginia. In the past 2.5 years I've learned a great deal from all my classes. I've had the opportunity to take not only engineering classes, but other classes that interest me. I have taken classes that deal with the Latino and Hispanic population here in the United States. I've taken Italian, yet I'm not fluent, but I'm getting there and I've only taken one class. I have also taken other courses geared towards my major such as calculus, multivariable calculus, physics, chemistry, differential equations, C++, Java, Advanced Software development, Science Technology and Society, and much more! Professor usually teach in a medium to large size setting, but if you want to get extra help you can always go to their office hours where you can have a one on one time with the professor and ask them all the questions you have about the class. You will not only learn in the classroom, but also outside when you're doing activities in the organizations you join or events that you attend. Learning is something that's going on at UVA 24/7.

    serious students. uva also has its own hospital and grad programs in medicine, nursing, law, engineering, education, business, commerce, architecture and public policy.
    What to do for fun

    go hiking or camping in nearby shenandoah national park. concerts and theater downtown in charlottesville and sporting events, concerts, plays and performances at the new john paul jones arena.
    Food and Dining

    the food on grounds is just ok. get a meal plan that allows you to eat elsewhere when you get tired of the food.
    Dorm Life

    first year students are required to live on campus - no cars. i think it really helps you to get involved in things and focus.

    very rigorous to enter and to maintain.

    at uva you are not on campus, you are on grounds. you will be a first year entertering, not a freshman. students and alumni are cavaliers as well as wahoos (hoos for short).

    uva is a great school with lots of history, traditions and spirit. life on grounds is rigorous but engaging. the area surrounding charlottesville is very nice.

    great education and good social scene for a decently low price.
    What to do for fun

    rugby road for frat parties. culture clubs such as csa tend to have their own parties on jpa (jefferson park avenue). bars on the corner. lots of clubs (as in... student organizations) and im sports. ski resorts such as wintergreen are no more than an hour away.
    Food and Dining

    for the high price, the food is mediocre. all first years (freshmen) are required to get a meal plan, which costs over $2000. for that price, one would expect much better food, but you just get mediocre dining hall food that you can at most eat 15 times a week (not that you would want to eat it any more often)
    Dorm Life

    the first year (freshmen) dorms are mediocre unless you end up in the new dorms (kellogg, watson-webb, etc). the rooms are okay, but the new dorms are very nicely built and clean. the old dorms (mccormick road dorms) are best for social lives, as people are just more connected. it is easy to socialize since you live within mere yards of so many others. however, old dorms lack air conditioning and are hot during warm months. on the other hand, gooch-dillard tends to be isolated since people live in suites and don't mingle much outside of those. those guys (incl. me) just go to other dorms to hang out.
    Academic Rigor

    uva is pretty rigorous: you should expect it to be, given its position. but the rigor truly depends on what classes you take. note that unlike what you did in high school, these classes actually require you to read and study.
    Tips for prospective students

    despite its prestige and apparent rigor, the student body is pretty diverse. there are partiers and studiers, nerds and slackers. the important thing is to not completely become one of those. remember, have fun but also make your education count. these four years are what decide your future.

    the university of virginia (uva) is a great school that offers vast opportunities for its alumni. because of its relatively cheap out-of-state tuition (and good in-state tuition), it is a good value for a great education. its departments are ranked high, especially the mcintire school of commerce, which is one of the top ranked undergraduate business schools in the country.

    Definitely a great school and the education is worth it. It is more beneficial with in state tuition.

    A lot of variety in meals which also differ from dining hall to dining hall. If those are not preferred there are a lot of stores near the grounds.

    It will require a lot of time and patience, but with study groups and focused attention it is manageable.

    Anyone can really find their niche at UVa. The population is very diverse.
    Tips for prospective students

    Start your application early. UVa tends to be very selective and turns down many qualified students for those who may seem less qualified. Highlight your leadership in your application and make sure that all your essays show what kind of person you are.

    Quality of education is great and is priced at public school rates. Costs for out of state students can be high though. Some don't always receive the financial aid that they want.
    Am enjoying being here

    The social life hear is great. Get involved early. I immediately got involved with the marching band here and made friends quickly. The only negative is that Greek Life sometimes can dominate the social scene especially during your first and second year. Rush is not until the the second semester of your first year though and much of the population is not in a fraternity or sorority.
    Am learning a lot

    The quality of education hear is great. All of my professors are really knowledgeable and great at teaching. However, it is important that you still try to take classes from the better professors.

    Do your research on everything! Look up class and professor reviews before signing up for a class. Talk to advisors before picking a major. Ask upperclassmen questions about the social life. Don't be afraid to ask for advice; most people are more than willing to help

    As an out-of-state student tuition is really expensive, but I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else. I feel that I'm getting high-quality education AND enjoying my time here so the tuition is worth it. UVA is pretty good about giving out financial aid and scholarships so make sure you look into them and complete the FAFSA

    I am enjoying every minute of being at UVA. I thought I would be bored coming from a big city to Charlottesville, but the campus life keeps me busy and entertained. There is always something going on. The Corner and the Downtown Mall are great hang-out spots, especially if you love food.
    Am learning a lot

    UVA is definitely hard as far as academics go and you need to be motivated in order to do well in most classes. A lot of professors are extremely passionate about what they're teaching, which helps classes go a lot smoother. Most professors are approachable and friendly so there's no reason not to go to office hours if you need help.

    Tips for prospective students

    The big thing for me in deciding on Virginia was the way I felt when I was on grounds. I felt like I was at home and it was the place I needed to be. Also, on your essays, just be honest with the way you feel. Don't feel nervous about not sticking to something the Admission board wants to see, they WANT to see your individuality.

    Being an in-state student, the price for all that UVA offers is excellent.

    UVA does not focus all of its time on straight academics. UVA encourages students to be involved in extra curricular activities. Whether that be joining a new club, making a new club yourself, or being involved in student council, there are many ways to get involved at the University. From my experience, I've enjoyed the balance I've created between my academics and social/extra curricular activities. You meet so many different people and begin to develop connections with a vast spectrum of people.
    Am learning a lot

    The University pushes you as a student and as a person. Professors expect a level of professionalism in their classrooms. You are pushed to read and write at your highest ability. UVA encourages students to take an out-of-the-box class, something you never thought you would ever take. You learn to expand your horizons educationally and socially. Not only are you exposed to education, but you are exposed to a whole new batch of people. Being at the University has taught me so much about life and education, all in one, as a college or university should.

    I had a hard time choosing between UVA and another college last year, and for all you rising 1st-years who are also stumped with a decision, UVA was the right choice. I can't imagine going to any other school. The other students and teachers in Charlottesville are committed to learning and teaching each other far more than any other place. All of the clubs and societies are student-run and are well organized. The social scene is a blast with something for everyone to do. UVA really is the best university in the country.

    During high school, I tried to push myself to take the hardest classes to prepare me for college, and it sure did help. While the classes at UVA are challenging, the teachers are superb and interact with students often. Even though my GPA isn't as good as it was in high school, I have learned more in one semester at UVA than I did in an entire year in high school.

    First and foremost, visit the school to get a feel for the grounds and community. Don't slack off senior year; they are definitely watching to make sure you don't slip up. Don't worry about being an out-of-state or even international student; everybody is very accepting and receptive to all kinds of cultures. Apply for scholarships!
    Bang for the buck

    While the tuition is a tad expensive (especially for out-of-state students), it's hard to see where our money is going. Currently, there are renovations going on that could be stalled for more important projects such as sprucing up the old dorms or improving dining hall food. Wireless internet network could also use some funds for improvement.

    The atmosphere and community here are great! Definitely a tight-knit group of students and faculty that are very welcoming. Everybody is very positive and upbeat, no matter where you come from. Friendliness is around every corner and in every classroom.
    Am learning a lot

    Here is where the University excels. Professors and classes are right on target and do not mess around with busy work or superfluous information. Assignments aim to increase and develop your understanding of the material.

    UVA is great of everyone and anyone. No matter who you are, no matter how quirky, loud, quite, or whatever personality you have, you WILL find a group of friends who you will make lasting friendships with.

    College is definitely a new experience and it will be one of the best times of your life. The most important thing I can say is make sure you do not neglect your studies your first semester; there will be many new experiences and opportunities but keep good grades your first semester and you will not be regretting it semesters to come because raising your GPA is very difficult. Other than that, learn to manage your time properly; find a good balance between work and play.

    This is one of the top universities in the nation and it is a public university, meaning it is much cheaper than a private university for instate students. You get out of it what you put into it, and if you put in your all, you'll definitely make it worth every single penny you pay. Make use of the libraries, your meal plan, opportunities to hang out with friends, and everything possible and you will definitely enjoy every moment.

    I absolutely love it here. There is so much to do around grounds, around Charlottesville, and in the surrounding areas when you are not studying. From the corner to the downtown mall to hiking humpback rock, there's something fun and interesting for everyone to do. Many people also join a fraternity or a sorority and become a part of Greek life at UVA, which also provides a whole other outlet to meet new people and partake in fun activities. However, there is no need to join Greek life to meet new people, because you're constantly meeting new people.
    Am learning a lot

    From the second you step onto grounds, you start learning something new everyday, whether it be in the classroom, in dorms, on grounds, or anywhere in Charlottesville. Classes are difficult but stimulating; if you have the right attitude, you will enjoy every class you take. There are all types of classes, from the 400 student auditoriums to the 12 person classroom, and you will get a taste of all of it. The professors and TA's are first class, and you will get so much out of one class if you put in the effort.

    The whole campus is gorgeous. I'm not a current student so I can't speak for much else, but there's so much to do in Charlottesville as well as surrounding areas (close to D.C., the ocean, the mountains....).

    Stand out in your application essay, be genuine, and show the admission officers what makes you unique and able to excel at this school. Also, people here are very studious, so be prepared for a few all-nighters, a lot of coffee, but to feel very rewarded. It is hard to get in, challenging while you are here, but very rewarding when you have graduated in terms of personal accomplishment and job opportunities.

    If you are an In-State student, you will get a much better deal than an Out-of-State student. UVA is a great public school with a price that is relatively reasonable. There are infinite resources for the students (numerous gyms, 5 million plus volumes in our libraries, etc...) so in that regard, the students here get what they pay for.

    The other students at UVA really help make the school great. My peers are extremely bright and challenge me to do my best. I have friends from many different countries as well as all walks of life, and it really adds the the educational mix.
    Am learning a lot

    The classes here are intriguing, challenging, and insightful. The professors are approachable if you make an effort. People often complain that classes are large at UVA, but this semester I have classes of 9, 18, 60, 60, and 150 students, which is actually quite good. Even in my largest class of 150, the professor still allows students to ask clarification questions during the lecture, which is awesome.

    Any student! There's so much variety and diversity in terms of clubs, activities on-grounds and off-grounds, academics, nightlife, etc that I think anyone could find their niche. But, students who are motivated, love to volunteer, like outdoor activities, and aren't afraid to put in the extra effort will definitely love it.

    It rains a ton. People here are pretty outdoorsy. And yes, like you've heard, we work hard and play hard - until the wee hours of the morning.

    On-campus dining is on the pricier side, but there are a lot of options off-campus for much less! After first year, you'll find that housing isn't cheap, but, sharing rooms, renting an actual house, or living farther off grounds does make the rent lower.

    Charlottesville has the nice small town, close-knit feeling, but the community is so cultured and diverse that it never gets boring. And if you like the mountains, UVa's right next door. I've never felt like there wasn't anything to do on the weekends.

    I came into UVa with minimal schooling in math and sciences. As an engineering student, the classes were tough and so different from high school. Intro and general education classes are all huge lectures and sometimes it's hard to really get anything out of those classes. But I found that if you try, even a small amount, you do end up learning a lot. Higher level classes are the best because they're more hands-on and you do end up learning no matter how much effort you put in.

    there are plenty of options for fun. uva has a party atmosphere on the weekends (especially with the dominance of greek life). but if even if you're not into partying there's still plenty of other ways to have fun and charlottesville is a great college town.

    freshman dorms provide a great social atmosphere where it's easy to meet people. the older dorms are close to campus and rugby road while the newer dorms are nicer, but a little further away. upperclassmen dorms aren't that great, so a lot of people live off grounds.

    the classes are challenging, but not overwhelming. professors expect students to work and are usually very helpful. getting an a in most classes is pretty tough.

    Hardworking, enthusiastic, dedicated students who are eager to learn from others, but also able to think for themselves.

    UVA has a number of secret societies (some of them less secret than others--like the Imps, whose initiations are public!) Streaking the Lawn is also a popular tradition, as well singing our school's anthem The Good Old Song after every touchdown in a football game.
    Bang for the buck

    UVA has a tremendous amount of resources that it makes available to its students, from its resource centers for minority groups or majors, to its available and approachable faculty and staff. UVA's curriculum for the College of Arts and Sciences is also very broad, requiring students to take classes in the sciences and humanities, as well as 2 writing classes, a non-western perspective course, and at least 2 years of a foreign language. While it is a rigorous curriculum, it provides the students with the opportunity to study as broadly as they can before narrowing their studies to their major of choice. UVA also has an extensive study-abroad program.
    What to do for fun

    There's much to do in Charlottesville and close to UVA grounds: shopping and restaurants on The Corner or the Downtown Mall, lots of local band performances on the weekends, big-time entertainment at the John Paul Jones Arena (from Lady Gaga to Bill Engvall), and a wide variety of sporting events. Not to mention beautiful natural scenery, hiking and swimming in the spring and summer!
    Tips for prospective students

    Come prepared to work hard academically! But do not be discouraged by the workload; UVA is a community devoted to connecting its students with helpful resources. Also, take advantage of getting to know your professors. They are your best friends when it comes to getting help in classes, and they are genuinely interested in their students and in assisting them however they can.

    The University of Virginia has a highly competitive academic environment with a very motivated student body. However, the students, faculty, and university staff are friendly, open, and helpful--especially to incoming first year students and transfers.     Campus Safety

    UVA is extremely safe. I would not have come here if I felt the slightest bit unsafe. UVA has University police always around grounds. Also, they have a blue light system lighting up pathways around grounds so that if you feel unsafe when walking around, usually at night, you can push it and UVA police will be there in, I believe, under 1 or 2 minutes. Also, there is a safe ride system in place to bring students back home on grounds at night between 2 and 7 when the buses aren't running for free. This is completely safe and run by police officers as well. Students may also use yellow cab or other cab services if necessary. In addition, UVA has an honor code which is taken very seriously. This includes being able to use yellow cab and pay them back later stating the honor code, being able to trust other students to return lost items and many other things including not cheating.
    Clubs and Activities

    Like I said before, clubs and activities are completely student-run. There are many clubs available, and if you don't see one you like, you may make your own club!!
    Great for these types of students

    Students looking for a challenge or those who love being near the mountains. The University also is it's own community within a community. The town does not run through grounds like many other schools.

    Some traditions at UVA would include streaking the lawn, graduation on the lawn, singing the Good Ole Song, Rotunda dinners, Lighting of the Lawn and many others. Like you may have guessed, the Lawn is a HUGE part of the University. The Lawn holds Thomas Jefferson's (our founder) plan for the academical village. It also includes the Rotunda which sits at the head of the lawn and is an amazing site to see. Some privileged fourth years (seniors) even get to live on the lawn alongside chosen faculty or Deans.
    Bang for the buck

    I definitely think that UVA is a great bang for your buck kind of school. I have had so many opportunities within my first year at UVA that I can't even do them all. I think that due to the student government, the University is very open to opinions and just wants the best for its students.
    What to do for fun

    There are many opportunities for fun activities at UVA. Many clubs and organizations do activities such as climbing the mountains nearby to going apple picking to playing broom ball (kind of like hockey but you go on the ice with tennis shoes on). There is a downtown mall nearby which the Charlottesville Albemarle Transit (CAT) buses and free trolleys can take you to. Also there you can go downtown and just hang out at the shops and restaurants there. People also like to party like at any university on the weekend. No matter what your interest, you can usually find others to join you at UVA.
    Food and Dining

    Food on grounds is okay. I would say that it has it's ups and downs , but food is food just the same. The best foods in my opinion are places such as Shea House Pavilion IX and Crossroads. Also, the corner has great restaurants from Bodo's (homemade bagels and cream cheese) to Arch's (Frozen Yogurt).
    Dorm Life

    I love dorm life on grounds. However, I do live in Dillard which is one of the farther dorms on grounds. My dorm has air conditioning and is suite style, meaning that I live in a place where there are 6 single rooms arranged like an apartment. We have a kitchen and are about a 30 second walk from the closest dining hall. All first year dorms are within walking distance of grounds and if you just don't feel like walking you can take the bus or the free trolley to get to class. A Lot of dorms are hall style which is a double room with about 22 rooms in each hall with I believe 2 Resident Assistants (RAs) per hall. It is so easy to make friends with either setup, so don't worry. Also, they are making new dorms right now which should be ready within the next year or so.
    Academic Rigor

    UVA is going to be a little bit challenging, but anyone applying to UVA should know this. I came in knowing that I would be about average compared to other students here. If you get into UVA, this may be a little hard to adjust to, but it's okay. If I had to, I would choose the same school again no matter how much I may be challenged.
    Tips for prospective students

    Anyone looking for a good sized school with a challenging course load should fit in perfect at UVA. Although it may look hard, the community is very close so that professors and peers are always available for help. I recommend taking a tour with U-guides and staying over night via Monroe Society ( not affiliated with the University of Virginia, but is a great program run by students for prospective students). Also, do not use the terms campus or freshman, sophomore, etc.

    UVA is a great community where everyone tries their hardest, but also know when to let loose and have fun. The school activities are student-run which allows a greater involvement by students as to how programs are run. Grounds is such a beautiful place and is just the right size so that no matter where you go, will always pass a few people that you know.

    UVA is a tradition-heavy school. We have many secret societies that are responsible for tags and signs around grounds, as well as large donations and endowments to the school. A capella groups are also a large tradition here, either participating in them, or seeing a group at various times and outlets throughout the year. Our annual Lighting of the Lawn rings in the holiday season, and students are challenged to maintain their academic integrity with an all-student run honor code at the University.

    For in-state students, you can't beat the University of Virginia. It is one of the best public universities in the country, and attending in-state brings you a large discount. For out of state students, if the University offers a degree program you are particularly interested in, it's a good choice.
    What to do for fun

    There is a large social aspect of UVA; students can join many student-run organizations, participate in a fraternity or a sorority, or attend countless concerts, lectures, or parties. The Corner is a large gathering place for students, offering a vibrant restaurant and bar scene.

    The dining program at UVA is typical of many colleges; it's not the best, and it's not the worst. There are three main dining areas on grounds (Newcomb, Observatory Hill, and Runk) as well as many other smaller facilities that serve as cafes or specialty stores.

    Write a good essay and make sure you that you have participated in several activities, with leadership positions in a few. You need to be well-rounded in all areas. Just having high numbers may not be good enough. There's a lot of competition and UVA wants the best students.

    All colleges are expensive and UVA is definitely no exception. However, if you compare its prestige and the education that you receive compared to many other school for the same tuition, I think it's reasonable. Financial aid and scholarships are always available.

    The UVA community is fantastic! You meet tons of people during your first year, and the meeting and greeting never stops! Charlottesville may seem like a small city, but it has loads to offer every year, ranging from concerts to horse races and the downtown area. There are so many different activities that you can participate in, and there's no way to avoid the activities, even if you try.

    I feel very safe at UVA, especially with the emergency contact poles spaced along the sidewalks that will call a police officer if pushed. There is also SafeRide which picks up students late at night from the library or wherever to take them back to their dorms.
    Greek Life

    Greek Life is a huge part of UVA with over 30% of students affiliated. However there are plenty of non Greek students who love it all the same. It is a personal decision.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are so many clubs and activities. There is an activity fair at the beginning of the year where you can sign up for as many as your heart desires. They range from Harry Potter Appreciation Club to Pre-Professional Clubs to intramural sports (including quidditch!) to volunteering and even secret societies.

    There is a ton of history here for students interested in history and architecture especially. UVA also has a great hospital for those interested in medicine. The Business Program is among the top in the nation and various other programs are great here as well. Any student who wants to attend a world recognized top notch University should come to UVA.

    The main location on campus is the Rotunda and the Lawn. The Rotunda was built by Thomas Jefferson and is a breathtaking sight at any time of year. An unusual tradition at UVA is to streak the lawn at night.

    Join one of the many clubs at UVA, sign up to volunteer through Madison House, participate in philanthropic events, go to Carter's Mountain Orchard and pick apples, hike Humpback rock, visit Monticello, there are tons of things to do at UVA for fun. There is literally always something to do.

    The dining halls get very repetitive and you get tired of them fast. However, plus dollars give you a chance to eat at other places around grounds that breaks up the monotony a bit. I would recommend getting as many plus dollars as you can and as few meal swipes as you can.
    Dorm Life

    The dorms I live in are very old and run down. There is no air conditioning and there have been several bug problems. However, the new dorms are very nice and have air conditioning, elevators, TVs, etc.

    All the classes I have experienced at UVA are very challenging and require a lot of hard work. I also have not felt that any of the classes at UVA are beyond my grasp or too hard for me, and have done well in all of them. As long as you are willing to put forth the effort, there is no reason you should not be able to do well.

    Be prepared for a lot of hard work and expect to have to put forth a lot more time and effort into your schoolwork than you did in high school. However, also be prepared for a lot of fun!

    UVA is a safe campus as long as you are sensible. Know what to do in an emergency situation, avoid walking alone at night, and be careful when drinking, especially if you are in a stranger's house.

    Don't be overwhelmed by the amount of partying that goes on at UVA. It's very visible, but there are a lot of people who don't go to frats and drink until they puke every night.

    On a large campus, safety is imperative. UVA is all about education and safety, and resources for mental and physical wellness are everywhere. As far as crime, University police and Charlottesville police are responsive and always alert, and blue lights are stationed and regular intervals throughout Grounds in case you may need any assistance.
    Greek Life

    Approximately 30% of the student population is involved in Greek Life, and it is much more than the stereotypical Greek institution. While generic frat/srat stars may sometimes feel like they are in abundance, the sororities and fraternities they are a part of do great community service and give back in many ways, genuinely creating a brotherhood or sisterhood. Other times, you are paying for your friends.
    Clubs and Activities

    We have hundreds upon hundreds of organizations, both completely student-run and overseen by offices within the University, providing you with opportunities to explore any interests you may have. Starting your own club is also quite easy.

    Honestly, everyone. You can't only target a specific kind of person when you are a large school. However, common stereotypes include preppy and athletic students. Really though, if you are serious about studying but enjoy having fun, UVA is right for you.

    UVa is all about traditions! Thomas Jefferson, our founder, was responsible for much of our terminology, for example. We call ourselves first years instead of freshman, second years instead of sophomores, and so on, as one can never really be a senior in learning. Our campus is called Grounds, the Rotunda (one of UNESCO's hertitage sites) is situation on the Lawn, etc. More than this, there is a list of One Hundred and ___________ things to do before Gradutating list, and each year, the graduating class adds a new challenge. Items on the list vary from streaking the Lawn to eating the Vermonster (20 scoops of ice cream plus cups and cups of toppings. Good luck.). As far as locations go, there is a room in the Alderman Library dubbed The Harry Potter Room thanks to its likeness to Gryffindor Tower. Just don't make a sound or face the death glares you will receive. There is also the Edgar Allen Poe room on the Lawn, providing some history and context as to Poe's time here as a student. Keep an eye out for those steam-tunnelers as well. Watch out for the many secret societies we have as well! For a school so rich in history and tradition, you are bound to learn something new about the school every year.
    Bang for the buck

    For one of the top-ranked universities nationally and the #2 public university in the nation, paying in-state costs is a great deal. Even out-of-state costs are reasonable when you think about the quality of education and breadth of opportunities you are receiving.
    What to do for fun

    At a large school, there is almost too much to do at any given moment. We have hundreds of club and volunteer opportunities that stray from the normal opportunities. We are also strong proponents of student self-governance, and so things like musical acts and events are things students are actually interested in. We get great performers to come to UVA and Charlottesville, from Lady GaGa to Dave Mathews to Fun. to even Riverdance. Outside of Grounds, the city has tons to offer by way of restaurants, movie theaters, the Downtown Mall, Fashion Square, and the Corner (a strip of stores and restaurants right out of Grounds). You'll also soon learn that at UVA, a capella is cool.
    Food and Dining

    Any time food is mass-produced, sacrifices have to be made in terms of quality. However, while carbs are everywhere and the salad bar may seem limited at times, eating healthy and tasty foods is not impossible. There are three main dining halls on Grounds: Newcomb, Runk, and O'hill (short for Observatory Hill Dining Hall). There is also Shea dining hall which is now open to all students during lunch time. Each dining hall has its own quirks and theme nights, so it's up to you which one you like best. There are tons and tons of options, and sometimes it feels repetitive, but many new things are coming out every semester, and food quality and taste have definitely improved.
    Dorm Life

    Pretty much the quintessential first-year experience as far as dorms go. UVA is comprised of the more social Old Dorms and the more isolated New Dorms. Old dorms are closer to most classes and important areas (they are basically situated in the middle of Grounds), and while they are the most social dorms, they are (obviously) much older than the other dorms and do not have AC. They are hallway style and have a quad like many schools have. New dorms are slightly further away from everything, but are newer, (primarily) suite-style, and still provide opportunities for a great social experience. Recently, there have been New New Dorms. I had the pleasure of being among the first to live in Balz-Dobie dorm, and it was a wonderful experience. Within the next few years, almost all of the New Dorms will be knocked down and more New New Dorms will be built. Because of overcrowding issues, UVA has opened up previously primarily upperclassmen housing to first-years. Students also have the options of living in residential colleges (such as Brown for the more eclectic among us, Hereford for the more environmentally conscious, and Shea or the language houses for those interested in a language experience). Each one will provide a unique but enjoyable experience.
    Academic Rigor

    We are often called a public ivy university - what does that tell you about our academics? At such a large school, introductory classes are undoubtedly large, but once you enter more specific classes in your areas of interest, class size dramatically decreases and the great, intimate learning environment with caring and knowledgeable professors many often prefer is established. Currently, the student to faculty ratio is 16:1 and 51.9 percent of classes are comprised of fewer than 20 students. With such statistics, one can truly make a large school as small as they prefer. Classes are often quite difficult, but as a UVA student, you have already demonstrated your academic excellence in high school and deserve to attend such a prestigious institution. It is not impossible to get a good grade by any means, and many classes do curve grades, but the proper effort must be put in place.
    Tips for prospective students

    Do your research. Come visit the school, take tours, and ask friends that already go here to show you around. As with any school, you must be able to really see yourself here for it to be a great fit for you. We have a beautiful campus (known as Grounds by us Wahoos - get used to our traditions and mannerisms, as they've likely been around for hundreds of years), beautiful people, and renowned professors, but if you can't see yourself enjoying your time here, there is no point. Regardless, at such a large school, you'd be hard-pressed to find something you don't enjoy.     While UVA did make national news for a student's murder two years ago, most of the safety emails from the police department are unusual, isolated incidents that aren't too bad and aren't terribly surprising with a low-income community living right behind where most students party. I don't recommend walking alone at night, but I don't recommend doing that no matter where in the world you are. Overall, I feel safe at UVA. I also love how the Honor Code encourages people to keep each other and possessions safe and help them out when they're out. I have lost my cell phone 3 or 4 times on the bus and in the library and have had it returned to me every time because of how genuine UVA students are.
    Greek Life

    I participated in Informal Rush this past fall after having a very uncertain attitude towards Greek Life for the previous two years. I enjoyed rush, but Greek Life ended up being not for me. I have already found friends and leadership opportunities on my own without having to pay a sorority, so I gave up on joining one, but my friends that are in one seem to enjoy them. You definitely don't have to go Greek to have a great time at UVA.

    The Activities Fair in August is almost overwhelming with how many different clubs there are to join!

    UVA is truly an amazing place. After studying abroad this past semester (on Semester at Sea, which UVA academically sponsors and I highly recommend!), I came back to UVA for graduation a few weeks to see some of my best friends walk the Lawn and take their diplomas. As soon as I stepped foot back on UVA, I felt immediately at home. This place has challenged me academically, grown me spiritually and intellectually, and given me some of my best friends for life- what more could you ask for?
    What to do for fun

    I'm not into partying, but I still have a blast on the weekends. My friends and I are known to gather at their house and play Fax Machine until 2am, where we end up having just as much as fun and are just as giggly as those who went to the Corner drinking but are completely sober and remember our fun times the following morning. I love walking along the Lawn- seeing the sheer variety of things it is used for is always very interesting and usually quite entertaining. I find participating in my dorm's programming to be a great way to have some fun- give your RAs a chance and go to their programs!
    Food and Dining

    Most people say the food is so-so at UVA, but I think it's pretty great. Then again, I have experienced military food and British teenage boy camping food, so I know what terrible food tastes like. UVA's is pretty darn good. A little monotonous, yeah, but be adventuresome and combine food in ways your Mom probably wouldn't let you at the dinner table at home. Cereal for dinner is also always great!
    Dorm Life

    I have loved living in a dorm for all 3 of my years at UVA and am excited to move back into a dorm this fall for my 4th year. The residential colleges, especially Hereford (where I have been since 2nd year), give a really great opportunity to have an awesome time and live and learn in a very unique community- try them out!
    Academic Rigor

    UVA is the #2 public school in the nation for a reason. Academics are hard here, but everyone's in the same boat, so people understand what you're going through.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get involved! Do not go home during your first semester except for Fall and Thanksgiving break- give UVA a chance on the weekends. Embrace UVA's quirks, even if they initially seem odd (sundresses at football games are awesome, no matter what your non-UVA friends tell you!).

    Because UVA is so big there are a lot of things to do. You can join many student groups and meet people that way. Greek life is an option as well. Charlottesville has a lot to explore even though it's a small city.

    The dining halls are fairly decent and they've been improving them. The food isn't terrible or anything, you can just get tired of it. Aside from dining halls though, the more specific eateries are always enjoyable. The restaurants in Charlottesville are all spectacular as the city is known for its food.

    There are a variety of dorms for freshman when you come in. Each of these dorms presents different styles of dorms: hallway style or suite style. Your roommate/suite mates will usually decide if you like your dorms or not. The council of each dorm offers plenty of bond activities and other events.

    Many of the classes here are very interesting. Most will definitely challenge you; You won't be able to slack off. There are various just for fun classes though. The really large classes (300-400+) can be a bit intimidating if you're not used to that many people. Definitely make use of office hours!

    UVA is a great university. There are tons of ways to meet new people and make new friends. Academically, you will be challenged and pushed to new limits. The city Charlottesville is a nice small town setting as well with plenty to explore. The city is also known for its great restaurants. Keep in mind how large the university is however.

    Safety is a top priority for the University of Virginia. There are blue lights throughout the grounds to get emergency assistance quickly. There are plenty of street lights so that there are no dark areas. The University police can be seen around Grounds making sure that everything is okay. During the night, students needing help getting home can call Safe Ride. A police officer will drive the students back to their dorm or apartment for free. Students can also take advantage of Yellow Cab. If a student does not have money for cab fare, they can show their student id and the university will cover the fee. The student then has a week to pay for the cab ride. When something does happen at the university or in the Charlottesville community, students receive emergency alerts by phone and email from the police department. These alerts keep the students informed about what is occurring and will also let students know when situations have been resolved.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are clubs and activities in just about anything you can think of. If a club does not exist, you can create one yourself. Even if you do not belong to a club, you can participate in some of its activities. Clubs are a really great way to meet other people who share some of your interests. Clubs allow you to become friends with many different people. The best thing about clubs is to meet people of different ages. As a first year student, you may have classes only with first years or you may have classes with all years. However, you probably will not meet many people. The great thing about clubs is that you actually get to interact with older students who have more experience.

    UVA is great for any type of students. Those students who prefer the quiet and peace of studying can find a home in one of the many libraries. Those who like to meet other people can immerse themselves in many clubs. For those who like to party, there is always something to do on the weekends. Literally, there is something for everyone.

    UVA is very well known for its honor code. At UVA, honor isn't simply a word, it is a sacred thing. First year students sign a symbolic paper that acts as a pledge to uphold the honor code. Even if a professor does not mention it, everyone knows that they need to uphold the honor code on every assignment and exam. Honor brings the UVA community closer together---a community of trust. UVA is also known for referring to the campus as the Grounds and instead of a quad, UVA has the Lawn. Students are known by their year in school. For example, a new student would be a first year not a freshman. This naming is in accordance with the idea of founder Thomas Jefferson that there is no such thing as a senior in college, for you do not simply stop learning after you graduate.

    UVA is definitely worth every penny. There are amazing professors who provide interesting opportunities to stretch your brain. UVA has a feeling of community that may not exist at other colleges. It feels like a place to belong.

    The University of Virginia has a wide variety of fun things to do. There are many a capella groups and other music groups. There are many performance groups. There are hundreds of clubs that are often having some sort of special event. And of course, there are sporting events. Saturday football games are especially exciting, even for those who may not like sports, because the school really does come together to support the team. Then there are the things to do in the greater Charlottesville community. Downtown Charlottesville is a great place to go.

    In all honesty, the on grounds dining at UVA is not the best. Sometimes the dining halls provide amazing foods but other times the choices are rather bland or outright unappealing. However, there is hope that the food will continue to get better as there was definitely a positive change between the fall and spring semesters. One of the recent changes made was the addition of the option to have steak and other premium meats. UVA also has food court options such as Chick Fil A.
    Dorm Life

    UVA is in the process of creating new dorms to replace some of the older buildings. These newer dorms are amazing! The dorms are always clean, because UVA has a wonderful cleaning staff. Many dorms have study lounges, making them a great place to work if you want to avoid crowded libraries. Dorms come in singles, multiples, and suite style. There is a type of dorm to fit every personality.

    The University of Virginia provides courses meant to challenge students academically. The courses are not easy but they are reasonable as long as students do the assigned work. Some students may say that getting an A at UVA is impossible. This statement is not true, but they would be right to say that you definitely have to work hard to achieve high grades. UVA is the perfect place for someone who always wants to be academically challenged.

    My tip for prospective students is to try to get a broad idea of UVA before making a decision. Tour the Grounds to get a feel for UVA. Try to talk to current students to hear their opinions. Find something you really want in a college and make sure UVA has it. If possible, take advantage of the program for accepted students that allows you to spend the night with a current first year student. That way you get an inside look at college life and a chance to explore UVA more in depth than the tour. Most importantly, never fear to ask questions.

    Greek life is extremely prevalent on grounds, especially around rush. That being said, it's just as easy to fit in if you decide not to go Greek.

    The dining halls don't have the best food. They do offer a variety of very basic food and every dining hall has a salad bar. The quality of the food isn't always fabulous. As for food outside of dining halls, The Corner has a variety of affordable food and a lot of places deliver (even to dorms).
    Dorm Life

    It really depends on the dorm and the other people that live there. RAs generally try to set up nights where everyone in the hall or the suite can eat dinner together and they sometimes set up other activities to. Dorm life isn't bad. If anything is broken or not working, they're generally pretty good about fixing it if you put in a work order.
    Academic Rigor

    Course load varies with the class. It's definitely a challenging school though. Even if the classes are difficult, professors set up office hours that can be extremely helpful when a student is in a bind. All the professors have been excellent. They all have a passion for teaching and are willing to help students in order to make sure they understand.

    I have never once felt unsafe while on grounds, even trekking back to my dorm from the library at 2AM. There are blue lights throughout grounds, and while UVA police have a strong presence, they are very cool.

    While we do have a strong greek life, those who don't go greek won't feel like they're missing out on anything at all. We are enough of a southern school where greek life is taken seriously, but not so much that there are issues of hazing, etc.

    Something for everyone. And if, somehow you don't find a club for you, you can start your own!

    This school is great for people who are intelligent, but enjoy doing things besides having their nose in a book 24/7. While most are considered preppy, you'll find a little bit of every type of person.

    I can't stress enough how much I've fallen in love with UVA. You can't put a value on the experience that you will get. The only qualm I have is with dining. Each meal swipe costs a little too much for the quality of the food.

    Join a club, or hit the corner, the downtown mall, or rugby road (greek row). There are always open parties, but plenty of activities for those who don't enjoy going out.

    The safety communication network at UVA is very respectable and the entire university is modeled after Jefferson's vision of a community of trust in which adherence to a no-tolerance Honor Code is stringently applied to all students and staff. That having been said, don't go walking home alone through 14th St and the roads beyond after partying on the weekend. While there is a great deal of trust and accountability amongst the students of UVA, there is no physical gate separating us from anyone who walks on grounds. Use your common sense and you'll be fine.
    Greek Life

    I'm not personally the best person to ask but if this tells you anything, I've heard that the Fox show Greek was modeled after UVA's fraternities and sororities. From what I can tell, Greek life is alive and well here.
    Clubs and Activities

    Like I said, the selection of clubs and activities here is unbelievable. But you can only enjoy all that the University has to offer if you take advantage of them; the more involved you are the better.

    While old money, upper-class white folks seem to take a majority of the demographic here, in truth, there really is a good representation of all different kinds at UVA. Even though you're sure to find yourself at home if you enjoy the prospect of greek life, I find it conceivably impossible not to make friends here, no matter who you are.

    It is a UVA tradition that all students should tear off all their cloths and run naked across the Lawn of Jefferson's historic Academical Village at some point in their academic carer. Starting at the steps of the Rotunda one is to make their way to the statue of Homer at the far end, circle him thrice, kiss his likeness and return to the glass doors of the Rotunda to peer through the keyhole and greet Mr. Jefferson's statue before returning to their clothes. Other traditions include steam-tunneling and painting Beta Bridge.
    Bang for the buck

    UVA is one of the top public universities in the country. In-state tuition is relatively affordable and financial aid and scholarships certainly help. Out-of-state on the other hand... good luck.
    What to do for fun

    There's literally a club for EVERYTHING at UVA. And if you manage to find an obscure interest of yours that's not currently offered via club organization, it's very possible to start one of your own. Intramural ports are also very big here but if neither really strikes your fancy there's always the Downtown Mall, the Corner, shopping up Route 29, plenty of nature to explore, and of course, parties on the weekend. The frat life life is alive and well at UVA.
    Food and Dining

    Decent and exciting at first (buffet every meal of the day!? what's not to love?) but it gets very old and repetitive pretty quickly. Though I've never been to another schools' dining facilities I've heard from friends who have that UVA somewhat pales in comparison. Though the convenience is nice, the dining plan is expensive and plus dollars are a bit of a rip off. Advice; get the 13 meal/week plan (the lowest you can get your first year... it won't seem like it but you'll never run out) and spend your plus dollars at the Starbucks in Nau Hall.
    Dorm Life

    Alderman dorms are awful to say the least but these are in the process of being replaced over the next few years. McCormick is decent and everything else is pretty nice. The main difference is between hall and suite style. Suite, which is what I lived in my first year, is in my opinion, way more enjoyable than hall. It's a little weird at first sharing a space with 10 other people you don't even know but by the end of the year you almost grow to be like family. It all depends on who you get stuck with. A few words of advice: DON'T arrange to live with a friend from high school, people change once they go to college and you will too. Don't be afraid to experience new things, there's a time and a place for everything... and that's called college. And finally, Don't stress over dorm living, it's different at first and takes a bit of getting used to but it's a necessary (and often fun) step for getting the whole college experience.
    Academic Rigor

    The old mantra work hard, party hard applies to a tee when it comes to UVA. The slightest bit of slacking of will land you in hot water extremely quickly if you're not careful but it's easier to push yourself when you're surrounded by your peers doing the same. Academic standards and expectations are extremely high here but the pay-off is more than worth the effort.

    Try something new! Go to Rugby Road on a weekend if you like frat parties, but if you want to do something else, that is completely an option. You can go shopping at Fashion Square, go to a Salsa Club party, check out one of the many shows playing at JPJ or at the Jefferson theatre or go hang out at the Downtown Mall. There's always something going on, so you won't be bored.
    Food and Dining

    The food, like most college campuses, has its good days and just average days. Most of the time, you won't get an epic meal, so don't expect it. But there will be at least one dining hall every day that may surprise you with something as simple as tater tots. YUM. Newcomb is under renovation, so your best bet would be to go to Runk for dinner. However, O'Hill is where you'll run into the most people.

    The dorms are great no matter where you live. You'll find, especially in the first couple of weeks, that everyone in your dorm is looking for a social experience: someone to go to a party with, someone to check out a club with them, someone to just talk about classes with. Make the most of living in whichever dorm you're in and I promise it'll be great.

    The classes are no walk in the park most of the time. Classes are challenging and stimulating at the same time for the most part, so you'll never be bored or capable of being lazy.     Some tips would be: -Do NOT get involved in more than three clubs your first year, and even then, three is pushing it. -Do your reading. The reading on the syllabi? Yeah, those are not just for fun. -Use your resources. I made the mistake my first year of thinking that if I asked for help, it would somehow make me a bad student. WRONG. Asking for help doesn't make you a bad student, it makes you a resourceful student who wants to get a good grade. -Study abroad. I know that everyone says that they'll do it when they have the time, but if you don't make the time, it won't happen. Make time and learn something new.

    Teachers are very nice, especially when they're in a smaller class. Big classes however, gives you a high sense of competitiveness because most of it is based on rank and the bell curve system. Know your teachers and your TAs and what their requirements are. They will inspire you to do better.

    Learn the college inside out. There are multiple ways to get to your destination, so knowing which the shorter route will save you tons of minutes when going from one class to another (10-15 minute interval). Make sure you make time for lunch. Even though you may get placed in housing far from grounds, it will still be okay. Just manage your time carefully.

    Very safe and well lit at night. Just as a rule of thumb I rarely walk anywhere alone, but I have never felt that the central grounds is unsafe when walking alone at any time of day. Even when leaving the library at 1 or 2 in the morning, I do not feel unsafe and oftentimes, I see UVA campus police making its usual rounds just to make me feel safer.
    Greek Life

    There is definitely a presence of Greek Life on grounds, but it does not overwhelm the social life of students here. Only about 1 in 3 students is part of Greek Life, and oftentimes other clubs and organizations on ground are so close that its members feel it is in itself a fraternal organization.
    Clubs and Activities

    Quidditch teams, acapella groups, intramural and club sports, activist groups, fraternities and sororities, student councils, first-year dorm associations, and arts and drama groups are all examples of the types of clubs and activities that UVA offers.
    Great for these types of students

    Students who like to be involved, like meeting people, and enjoy learning new things are especially comfortable on grounds. This doesn't mean that every student is unbelievably outgoing, but on the whole, the students are involved both in the classroom and out of it.

    Tradition is a major part of UVA. Year to year, many events that occur on grounds (a traditional word used for campus) have happened since the inception of the school itself. The Lawn, a magnificent expanse of architecture and nature, is a popular and exquisite site to see on grounds. Surrounding the lawn area are Pavilions that were the original buildings of the University, with Old Cabell Hall at one end and Jefferson's incredible Rotunda at the opposite end. The beauty and majesty of this site is breathtaking and very historical. UVA also is known to have its own jargon for specific things around the school (which have become tradition. We call campus grounds, freshman first-years, and we even have our own fight song for scoring touchdowns at football games in the fall.
    Bang for the buck

    I'm an in-state-er, so the bang for the buck is pretty exceptional. Many of my closest friends here at UVA are out-of-state, and even they agree, the level of education here - even if at a costly expense - is well worth it.
    What to do for fun

    From apple picking on Carter Mountain, to hiking the trails along the Appalachian, to shopping in downtown Charlottesville, to seeing a concert at JPJ Arena, to reading on Jefferson's Lawn, to getting lunch at Little John's, to tailgating at a fraternity on Rugby Road, to cheering on the Cavalier's in sports, to attending a school drama production, to listening to acapella groups at the lighting on The Lawn, there is always something to do at UVA and in Charlottesville - with or without access to a car.

    Not exactly a gourmet selection, but for those who aren't too picky about eating, you will always be able to find something to eat in the dining halls. Further, many local restaurants have carts that come to grounds during lunchtime and offer meal exchange plans for students as well. I was once told that Charlottesville has more restaurants per capita than New York City, and honestly this could be a very true fact. The Corner, a popular place to eat within walking distance from grounds, has all sorts of food options for students to eat relatively inexpensively as well.
    Dorm Life

    Two words: Old Dorms. Yes they may be without air-conditioning, but it is only hot a few weeks of the year and fans will become a first-year's best friend. Plus, the quad outside Old Dorms provides an outdoor getaway for students to not only study on the usual beautiful days of Charlottesville, but also to mingle with friends, toss a football, or just absorb some much needed vitamin D.
    Academic Rigor

    The reading level is definitely a step or two up from high school readings (granted I am taking heavy reading courses) but it is never an overwhelming amount that is impossible to complete. The graduate students that assist during discussion sections are INCREDIBLE - they not only understand the material but facilitate analytical discussion that provides more than surface level understanding.
    Tips for prospective students

    If looking to apply and become a Wahoo, take rigorous courses in high school that delve into a varying array of topics - from science, to the arts, to the humanities. UVA not only looks for a well-rounded student but also a student who can critically think about what is taught and actually apply it to the world he/she lives in. My greatest preparation for the workload and level of thinking was by honestly just reading, all sorts of books, articles, and even thoughts of other students I was learning with in high school. The diversity of UVA opens new doors to thinking and the professors are all opinionated, knowledgeable, and passionate in their areas of study - which helps to broaden the horizons of their students in return.

The students are all bright, successful, and talented; they draw upon each others' gifts and abilities to create a living and learning community.     The dialect at the University is very interesting to say the least. While not all students adhere to it, most call students First Years, Second Years, etc. instead of Freshman, Sophomore - this is because Thomas Jefferson believed that students never stopped learning

    You are spending money to go to one of the best public Universities in the world - it is definitely worth the money you put into it. However, the housing is a baseline price the first year, which seems to be unjust (the housing ranges from very old suite-style to hotel-styled that are brand new).
    What to do for fun

    On the weekends the sky is the limit for things to do; all the clubs and organizations hold events on a weekly basis, so there's that to do. You can also go to the Charlottesville downtown mall which has many eateries and shops to browse around.
    Food and Dining

    There are many different options for food at the University; the dining halls are average, but the eateries that really stand out are on The Corner. It is a must to try every restaurant here before you graduate - all of them have a signature dish (or dishes) that are fantastic.
    Dorm Life

    The dorms have a wide range of styles, from hotel-based to hall-style. You have a choice of what you want in your dorm, and you can find positive aspects no matter where you live your first (and subsequent) years.
    Academic Rigor

    I would say none of the classes should be taken lightly; they are all extremely challenging at times, but are also some of the most rewarding. Students here are able to manage academics but are also able to have fun while doing it.
    Tips for prospective students

    Do NOT slack off in senior year - take the classes that are most difficult so you can simulate the college experience. In addition, the classes that you can take as electives at the University are very interesting. Also, get extensively involved in some sort of club or venture.

    The campus police are good at their jobs, and there are multiple emergency stations around campus where you can press an alert button and get assistance. I have walked around late at night many times and have never felt unsafe. In addition, whenever there is an incident, the campus police send out a report to every student over email so we are kept informed of possible dangers.
    Greek Life

    Even though first years haven't rushed yet, Greek Life is a huge presence at UVa, mostly because of the frat parties thrown every weekend. They are fun and you'll get to know your favorite frats. Most people rush in the winter, even if they don't plan on pledging, which I think is a good idea, because you might end up finding a sorority or fraternity that you really like! I am rushing in a few weeks and looking forward to it a lot.
    Clubs and Activities

    THEY HAVE EVERYTHING HERE! There are tons of a cappella groups, theater groups, improv groups, intramural sports, student unions, literally anything you could think of. Unfortunately, because there are so many students, it is competitive and might be overwhelming trying to figure out where to go. Luckily, they have a great activities fair where you can sign up on email lists and go to interest meetings to figure out if you like the group! Joining a club is the easiest way to make friends.
    Great for these types of students

    If you are outgoing and social, this is the place for you! I found it easy to make friends, and there are so many friendly people here. If you are more quiet and introverted, and like to spend a lot of time alone, you will probably end up doing that.

    The Good Old Song! You have to know it--everyone sings it at football games (which you dress up all fancy to go to) so learn it! There's also the Whispering Wall, where if you sit at one end and whisper into the wall, the person at the other end can hear you, clear as day! Also streaking the lawn. That's all I'll say about that.
    Bang for the buck

    If you live in state, apply here. It is unbelievable to me that in-state people get to go here for so cheap, and it is absolutely worth it. If you're out of state, however, it i a lot more expensive. It's not a rip-off or anything, and I doubt I'd be able to find a school I love as much for cheaper, but nonetheless, I hate parting with so much money.
    What to do for fun

    There is so much to do!!! Every weekend, people will be standing at the lawn, handing out flyers for sporting events, concerts, parties, comedy shows, art shows, you name it! There are so many clubs and so many things to get involved in, there will never be a night with nothing to do! Plus, the Corner and the Downtown Mall are so close, and it's always fun to explore Charlottesville for a bit.
    Food and Dining

    I am a vegetarian, so the dining hall options, while numerous, are a bit repetitive. The food itself is good quality, and O'Hill brunches are amazing, but it's inconvenient to go to the dining hall all the time. I had the 15 plus meal plan, but never used all 15 meals, and ran out of plus dollars rather quickly. I am switching to 10 plus next semester.
    Dorm Life

    The dorms here, no matter where you live, will have some sort of catch. I lived in Old Dorms, which were regarded by everyone as the best, because they were located near the center of campus, while all of the other first year dorms were very far away. However, these old dorms were just that: old. They don't have air conditioning, there is no kitchen, and the bathrooms are not very nice. Some of the other dorms have much more space (like the suites of Gooch-Dillard) or are much more modern (Balls-Doby and Watson Webb) but everyone that I know who lives there hates being so far from the rest of campus. you can pick your dorm location, so choose Old Dorms!
    Academic Rigor

    Your classes will challenge you, for sure. Most of my professors were excellent and made learning the material interesting and not too strenuous. There will be some classes, however, that require significant effort just to stay afloat. I think that's a good thing--college shouldn't be easier than high school, and remember, C's get degrees!
    Tips for prospective students

    It is much more difficult to get in from out of state versus an in-state student who is applying, but don't let that discourage you. This is an amazing school with so many different activities, and there is a niche for everyone who gets in.

    The motto work hard, play hard seems to embody this school. Students will spend hours cramming at the library and preparing for class, but also know how to have a good time. Everyone I've met is incredibly smart and dedicated to their schoolwork.

    UVA works hard to protect its students and faculty. If you're out late, safe ride can give you a ride back to your dorm. Wherever you are, be sure not to walk back alone.
    Greek Life

    Approximately 30% of UVA students take part in Greek Life. Rush is a time to really meet new people, even if you choose not to pledge. UVA offers many different frats and sororities and each offers a different experience. Sororities and Fraternities want to have a good time, but each also works for a good cause.
    Clubs and Activities

    From the well-known Pancakes for Parkinson's which raises thousands of dollars annually to find a cure for Parkinson's to groups that raise awareness of teen suicide to language clubs, UVA offers a wide variety of activities. A club fair is conducted on the lawn and in the amphitheater early on in the semester to show your options. Also, take part in an inter mural sport if you wish not to commit to a school sport.

    Everyone go! If you're a nerd, if you're talented, if you love meeting people from across the globe, if you're a dreamer, if you have a passion for everything between ultimate frisbee to Shakespeare, or if you simply want to have a wonderful college experience, GO!

    While streaking the lawn may be one of the most infamous, UVA has many traditions that students should do before graduation. An all-nighter at Clemons library is a must and visiting the McGregor Room (AKA the Harry Potter room) in Alderman library is impeccable. Take a nap on the lawn while listening to some nice jams coming from a Lawnee's room and be sure to high five Dean Groves. Introduce yourself to President Sullivan-you will wish she was your grandmother. Visit the Stud during finals week for some great food and attend every a cappella concert-they're to die for.

    This school has opened my eyes to so many different types of talents, beliefs, and people. I never would have imagined how quickly I would form lasting friendships with my peers and close relationships with my professors. Every day I am inspired to challenge myself academically and socially. Not until UVA have I had such a desire to reach my full potential.
    What to do for fun

    UVA has so many activities it does annually on its own: Lighting of the Lawn, Pumpkins and Puppies during the Fall, Pancakes for Parkinson's, and much more. The campus (or grounds) is so beautiful and you can always find some fun frisbee-ing or tightroping happening on the Lawn. It is never a boring time.
    Food and Dining

    Your typical dining halls at UVA are not the best. For the first semester, get 15 meals or less and see how you adjust. There are many cafes and small areas to use plus dollars on grounds that have great food!
    Dorm Life

    UVA offers both hall and suite style. Hall style allows you to encounter more people and suite style provides closer unity with about 8 or so other people of your gender. RA's are incredibly helpful and make sure that everyone gets along in the dorm environment.
    Academic Rigor

    Within the first week at UVA, I knew how demanding it would be. While the courses are more difficult, a 15 hour semester is manageable. Know your limits and have a study plan developed early on.
    Tips for prospective students

    UVA is a large school and for incoming freshmen should explore before classes begin so that they know where to go the first day. Also, UVA offers so many unique courses so take any courses that interest you, even if they might not be totally coherent to your major. They'll benefit you in some way!

    Initially, my biggest problem with Old Dorms was that there's no air conditioning. I got over that super quickly so I totally love Old Dorms. My classes are conveniently really close to me and I am also pretty close to all the dining halls so I cannot complain.

    The classes that I am taking right now are very difficult and they have taught me how to manage my time wisely because they are time consuming classes that demand attention.

    I honestly think that the University of Virginia is the best of both worlds. It has a great social atmosphere and the academics are challenging and rigorous.     Greek life is a big part of UVA but is not necessary. I was not a part of it, but I know many men and women who enjoyed the community

    There is anything and everything you can think of; what I was interested in was fencing, glee club, cross-country fundraisers, and quidditch fundraisers.

    Any type of student: I am not as preppy as most of the students that go here and I am part of a much lower economic status and yet I fit in perfectly.

    You need to hike to up to Humpback in the early morning or the late evening to see either the sunrise or sunset because it is a tradition and it is beautiful.

    It isn't that expensive, and the University has a lot of funding from the state, the government, and past alumni so financial aid is abundant as well as scholarships.

    There are sports competitions, bands, different outdoor clubs, and pretty much any other club you can think of--if it isn't there you can probably start your own because of how big the campus is.

    O'Hill used to be the best but now Newcomb has been redone so I don't which is better. They offer vegan and vegetarian food options as well which is great for me.

    I loved my first year dorm and the girls with which I roomed. First year dorms are mostly located near central grounds which is very close to the classes you will be taking first year.
    Academic Rigor

    The classes are difficult. Some are a walk in the park, but most are not. A student has to work hard for good grades.

    Learn your way around before you start classes in order to make it to those classes on time. If you need financial aid or are confused about something, make sure to contact the financial aid office because it is a very helpful service.

    There are 33 frats and 16 sororities at UVA. They are a huge part of UVA, but not exclusive if its not your thing. Rush really depends on who you know.

    Hit the Downtown Mall! The Downtown Mall is an historic pedestrian only area with lots of cute shops and restaurants. There are also lots of trails and other outdoorsy things to do around town.

    The food is good and is getting better every year. There are lots of options for dining besides the three main dining halls, so you're sure to find something you like. The Corner, near UVA, has lots of shops and restaurants to choose from as well.

    The dorms are pretty good, overall. UVA is building a bunch of new dorm buildings that are super nice, so new students will have it made! The dorms are all pretty close to classes.

    I had visited the new freshmen dorms and even from the outside, they look 100x better than most freshmen dorms at any other college.

    One thing I know after talking to admission counselors is that you must do good and try your hardest in school. Basically you want to max out everything you can at your school, take the best classes possible, and if you can, take as many AP classes as you can, for that is the most important thing.

    I had just visited the college as a prospective student and i have to say it's absolutely amazing! The campus is beautiful, and all the buildings are indescribable. This is one campus you have to experience for yourself in order to see what a perfect school looks like.
