    For a public university, it is rather expensive, but it has an excellent reputation.

    I am a bit scared to go to a school as big as Madison is, but I am looking forward to the challenge.
    Will learn a lot

    The education program is competitive and also very intensive. There is also a huge range of courses offered outside of the major and a lot of learning communities dedicated to various things.

    I think this school is great for people who want to work hard to get into a good school and continue to work hard in college. I would not recommend this school for people who can get distracted easily.
    Tips for prospective students

    Apply early, I really believe this will increase your chances of getting accepted and will get you a response a lot faster so you can make your decision. Really work to get a high ACT score and writing a good admissions essay.

    Although this school is rather pricey for a public school I feel that it is definitely worth it. People are always impressed when they hear that I go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, so I know that a degree from here will get me a great career.
    Am enjoying being here

    This campus and school has ALOT to offer, whether it be academically, socially, politically, or otherwise. Its location provides a perfect unison between city and campus life. The city is great, it's very active, and it's wonderful to see everyone out running, biking, shopping, walking down famous State St., etc.
    Am learning a lot

    I have learned so much since I began my schooling at University of Wisconsin-Madison. There is such a variety of classes to choose from which makes it easy for you to find classes that you are interested in. The professors here challenge you to think outside the norm and come up with creative ways in which to think about problems.

    Students who want a big campus with lots of different people and opportunities that will allow them to expand their horizons and want an elite education will love the University of Wisconsin Madison.
    Tips for prospective students

    Make sure you are prepared to step up to the plate and earn your grades. In high school it is easy to put in minimum effort and obtain perfect grades, but now that you are at the university level it is necessary for you to be at the top of your game. You need to be equipped for major studying and late nights in order to achieve a good GPA.
    Bang for the buck

    Madison is pricey yes, but not outrageously expensive. It’s a D1 university that lives up to its standards socially and educationally. Don’t let the price scare you away; there are millions of ways to get scholarships, grants, and/or loans to help you pay for school. Also, there are campus jobs that you can apply for.
    Am enjoying being here

    From the social aspect, one of the best parts about being at Madison is the school spirit. Game days are epic when all the badgers get together and support the team whether it’s football, basketball, hockey, etc. Plus, there are innumerous groups/activities that I can participate in which allows me to reach out and become part of the badger community. From the educational aspect, the challenges presented to me have already tested my determination, patience, and strength that will be needed to survive the “real world.”
    Am learning a lot

    Each professor has their own teaching technique to make their class interesting, and many classes have teaching assistants who can help you individually. One small problem you might encounter with the teaching assistants is a language barrier, but other than that they're great. And if you need even more attention, many courses have programs where you can get extra help by joining a group that schedules around your free time. Also, Madison gives you the ability to take a variety of courses so you can be educationally well-rounded, which is something many graduate programs look for.

    Great for these types of students

    Madison is great for anyone who is up for an academic challenge, likes to meet lots of new people, and enjoys being part of a school with lots of pride. I know Madison has a reputation as a party school, and it is very true that if you like to party this is sure to be a fun place for you. On the other hand (from personal experience) I can guarantee that if you are not into partying, or if you don't drink, you don't have to worry. There is so much other stuff to do you can still have an amazing experience here.
    Tips for prospective students

    The school is large, but that doesn't mean that you have to feel overwhelmed here. When you break down all the academic programs you will most likely end up in a relatively small group of students. Go to the activities fair and find something to get involved with, but DO NOT take on too much. Choose one or two extra-curricular activities at one time. Freshman year is very hard for many students and often grades will show this. It will help you to have a couple of outlets to have some fun, but it will hurt you if you never have time to study. On that note - make sure you are studying and doing your work everyday. Procrastinating may get you by in high school but for the vast majority of people it doesn't work like that at Madison.

    To be honest Madison is not the cheepest school to attend. You will get hit with costs that some may not immediately consider. Tuition, room, and board are not your only costs. Students do have to pay for tickets into sports games (this is different for many other universities), and if you want to bring a car to campus you will add a considerable amount to your yearly costs. All this considered I still think that the superior academic instruction you will recieve, the free entertainment that is offered, and the overall Madison experience make it 100% worth the costs.
    Am enjoying being here

    I love this school and this city. There is almost always something going on. The Union has movies and music among other events, and state street is always fun to walk down. I always have a ton of fun going to Badger games - everyone has tons of school spirit so even if you don't enjoy the sport in itself you are bound to have fun.
    Am learning a lot

    I can honestly say that every class I have taken here has been worthwhile. Even going beyond the information that I have learned in classes I have learned better study strategies. Every professor I have had has been extremely nice and willing to help, but I will add the qualifier that because the school is so large you must be willing to put personal effort forth if you need help from your professors or Teaching Assistants.

    Hard working, time managers- can balance social and academic life, don't mind living in a cold winter environment, enjoy having pride for their school, and ready to work a top-notch education.
    Tips for prospective students

    Definitely visit the school, and maximize that visit by trying to arrange a visit for a tour or information session/interview in the school department you are most/somewhat interested in.
    Bang for the buck

    The school gets quite pricey for those students not residing in Minnesota or Wisconsin, and it seems as though UW-Madison doesn't give a lot of money to out-of-staters. The education you receive however will be one of the best in the Midwest.

    UW-Madison has a beautiful campus, and a wealth of opportunities on campus and in the city (which is fused right into the city setting and city life). UW-Madison has very few transfer students. It does get cold in the winter!
    Will learn a lot

    UW-Madison has very solid academics, well paralleled by its social atmosphere as well. The university is a top-notch research institution. The size of the school can make it competitive, especially for out of state students.

    Any prospective students must understand that time allocation is key to succeeding in college. Free time seems to creep up every day, but while attending Madison some of that extra time should be focused for studying.

    The prices for Wisconsin residents are very generous considering the education students are receiving. I don't mind paying money towards something that will, in the long run, help me succeed throughout my life.

    I have been on campus numerous times throughout the past seven years, and I love it! It is a large school, but at the same time it feels at home. Everything a student needs is within walking distance. The Madison atmosphere is awesome, lively, and very outgoing. There is something for everyone here and I can't wait to be an official part of it.

    The University of Wisconsin Madison is known to be a challenging college, and anyone attending is already well aware of this. I am looking forward to working hard and earning a degree at one of the most well respected colleges in the nation.

    I would say Madison is great for pretty much everyone. Although there are dorms in a more suburban area, at times you can still feel like you are in a large city. So if big cities, large crowds, and an active nightlife is something you don't like, then maybe Madison isn't for you. But if you are looking for a place to find yourself, awesome friends, and a great education, Madison is the place to be.
    Tips for prospective students

    Work hard. Partying is a very large part of Madison life. And there are also a lot of people that do not. Like I said. Madison offers something for everyone. Just be smart about your decisions and learn how to balance being a good student along with having a good time. Because this is your future, and you don't want to ruin it right off the bat.

    Madison is very expensive. And because people want to go there, they offer very few scholarships to people. So you are going to have to take out loans at least sometime during your college experience. I feel like tuition is very affordable. But housing I feel is grossly over-priced. $8,000 to live in the dorms is expensive. $2,000 of that goes into the food services but yet you still have to pay for everything that you eat. I don't get it.

    Madison is the perfect place to find whatever it is you're looking for. Madison is home to over 40,000 students who have a variety of interests and there is something for everyone. There are so many clubs, organizations, sports, and activities. But because there is so much, you often have to go looking for what interests you.
    Am learning a lot

    With the classes I am taking I do feel like I am learning a lot. Classes vary greatly depending on the professor that you get. With UW Madison and the large student population, it is sometimes very hard to get the classes that you want. So while you probably will learn a lot, it might at times not be something that you need. Also, with a lot of the classes, material is taught very fast so unless the student has a lot of initiative to review on their own, you may learn less than others.

    ~Hardworking---school is tough no matter what major you are in. ~Leaders---there are so many opportunities to involve yourself. Be sure to do it! It may be a large university, but there are plenty of opportunities to make a name for yourself ~People who enjoy a challenge--it's tough, you either have to get over that or transfer. You may not get an A in every class; although it is possible. ~Balanced individuals-Know when to separate school and fun. Everyone needs a break from their studies. Madison is great place to have fun and relax as well.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get involved! Everyone who I've met at UW has been a leader in some form or another. I'm not saying you have to be captain of the lacrosse team, but be an active contributor to the lacrosse team! Leadership skills will not only help you succeed at UW, but in life as well so it is best to start early! Study! Develop those study skills early because believe me Madison is not like high school anymore. Get to know your teachers so you can establish a relationship with them (you do need a strong letter of recommendation). Visit Madison! Make sure you see it. Most kids will write it off as a huge school taught by TAs that only cares about their grad students. This is far from true. As someone who easily gets lost, it's not as bad as it looks. If you visit, be sure to attend a class! Most lectures are rather large and it is easy to sneak in and see the academic atmosphere.

    No university is cheap. Or at least, the ones worth going to aren't. I am a resident from Wisconsin so I am a little biased. If you are out of state though, still consider the school. Many scholarship and financial aid packages are available. I know many who get most of their tuition paid for each year. What are you paying for? Top teachers who all have graduated from excellent schools with PH D's in their respective fields. You'll be surprised that your professors will often be cited in your textbooks! You are also paying for research in each subject so once again I highly recommend getting involved! Housing is also included in their estimate which is a fair amount for the quality of the room. But their are many other less expensive options for housing if you want to explore those as well!

    Madison is more than just a good school with a strong emphasis on research. It is a place to have fun and enjoy many life experiences. Nothing quite compares to doing the Jump Around after the third quarter of a Badger Game in a sea of red and white (try not to lose your balance!!) There are numerous activities to get involved in and plenty of opportunities to meet new people. There are also plenty of free events at Memorial Union to attend if you are unfortunate enough not to get tickets to the numerous Badger athletic events. It pretty much can be anything you want it to be. If you want to spend your time droning at College Library, fine. But it's not all about doing homework. There is balance that must be had and the University of Wisconsin recognizes this. I love it here!
    Am learning a lot

    I went into the University of Wisconsin overtly confident that I was going to breeze through and be on my way to UCLA medical school. This university has challenged me more than I ever would have expected. Almost in every major offered Madison recognized as one of the top programs in the country. Still overconfident? UW offers many honors programs. For example, I am currently enrolled in the Biology Core Curriculum program, a four semester researched based advanced biology program. It gives you opportunities to work one on one with professors, a rarity at most large schools. Programs like these are offered throughout each major. If you are finding yourself having troubles, there are many people available to help you. Professors are all required to have open office hours and will usually meet with you outside of them if you ask. Graduate TAs are often excellent resources as well. Also, most libraries have tutoring programs in a variety of subjects. If you are interested in getting more involved in your learning, join a research lab! Each program conducts research and many welcome undergrads. It is a great way to get to know leading researchers in the field and looks great on a resume. Much tuition goes toward research so I highly recommend getting involved!

    The University of Wisconsin - Madison is great for students seeking freedom, in all forms imaginable. It would be great for students that don't mind attending a large University. However, it is as large as you make it. A University of 40,000 students may seem overwhelming at first, but I have yet to get lost in the masses. You can always narrow it down. For example, I am a German major. I personally know the German Department Advisor and have several students from previous classes in my class. This is true for other departments as well. You are NOT a number, you are NOT just another tuition check.

    Check out the campus. If you fall in love with it like I did, stop looking for other colleges. This is it.

    UW - Madison may be a bit expensive, but I can definitely see where my tuition money goes. It is such an active campus with endless possibilities. The only thing I would recommend is not living in the dorms if you are really pinched for money. They are a lot more expensive than most of the other properties on and around campus. I am planning on getting an apartment with some friends of mine next year, and am already looking forward to the excess money.

    Madison is my perfect fit! I am exploring all of my new freedoms and responsibilities. I have my pick of thousands of interesting classes, any shopping and eating venues that I could possibly want are within a ten minute walk, and there is never a dull night.

    Having just completed my freshman year, I have mainly taken prerequisite classes. I knew some of the material already, but altogether have learned a great deal. The classes are thought provoking and challenging, in a good way.

    Madison is expensive, no doubt, but it is well worth it. You get a phenomenal education and will walk out with a worthwhile degree. What UW offers is well worth the price, and if you work hard enough and do well enough, you will get more aid and money.

    Campus is absolutely beautiful and there is always something to do. Making new friends and meeting new people can be really intimidating at first, but once you get involved and start talking to people in your dorm, you find people that you click with.

    I am learning a lot through my classes-all of which I enjoy. I am also learning a lot about myself, about other people, and about the world. UW-Madison is a place where you will, undoubtedly, get a great education both in the class and out.

    The University of Wisconsin-Madison is great for student who are dedicated to studying, but still want to have fun. A good sense of balance between work and play is needed to succeed. Overall, the atmosphere is positive, and the University has everything you need to reach your goals, as long as you are willing to work for it.
    Tips for prospective students

    Make sure you tour the campus first, and sit in on some classes. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison you will be walking, everyday, regardless of the horrible Wisconsin weather. Make sure you are prepared, so that this doesn't cause you to skip class. When sitting in on some lectures in Madison, make sure you try to take notes, even though you wont actually be tested on the material. The sooner you understand how to take notes and study, the easier the college transition will be. Lastly, make sure you get involved. One of the best part of the enormity of the student body is that every kind of person is represented. Join an organization and meet people with the same interests as you. College will be an easier and more enjoyable transition once you have met a lot of people.

    In my opinion, the University is reasonably priced, especially if you can get in state tuition. Minnesota residents are also given in state tuition, so this is a good place to check out if you're from Minnesota as well. As for getting the most bang for your buck, make sure you take advantage of everything you can get with your tuition money. For example, all students are entitled to a free bus pass for the Madison Metro bus system. These buses can take you to the mall, grocery store, or even some of your classes, free of charge. The University Health Services also offers free check ups and some immunizations, that can really help save you money. Although housing in Madison is steeply priced to begin with, deals can be found through the local leasing agencies on apartments and houses. I recommend living in the dorm your freshman year, which is a little pricey but well worth the experience. However, after that you can get more affordable housing if you search hard enough.

    Madison is an awesome city to live in. There is something for everyone, no matter what you like to do in your spare time. If you're more into the party scene, the southwest dorms are a great way to meet people your freshman year, and are centered right in the heart of campus. If you'd rather have a more laid back residence, the lakeshore dorms provide beautiful scenery and the lakeshore trail for walking and running. The campus also offers many things to do. There are free movies at the union, game nights in the dorms, and american idol-like competitions to take part in. Another perk is that State Street and many other places to hang out are within walking distance from campus. Having a car is not necessary, and to be blunt, designated drivers are not needed, making the party scene safer for students.
    Am learning a lot

    The University of Wisconsin-Madison has multiple courses for anything your looking to learn. From Badminton to Molecular Biology, there are classes for everyone. However, this college is definitely only for the serious student. Large class sizes make some lectures difficult to follow. This is made up for by recitation sessions, where students meet with a teaching assistant to go over material covered in lecture. The hardest thing about the transition to college is learning how to study. If you can understand this, I can guarantee you will learn a lot. Listen to your teaching assistants. They have been there a while and have gone through the same kind of transition. Its their job to help you. If you take advantage of the resources available to you, you will have no trouble learning and enjoying the course material.

    Madison is great for almost anyone; it is such a diverse place that everyone can find their niche. If you don't want to deal with cold weather, walk everywhere, work for your grade, or have fun, then you shouldn't go to Madison.
    Tips for prospective students

    1.Although the dorms are expensive, live in them your first year on campus. They help connect you to so many students. If you like a very social atmosphere, live in the Southeast dorms. If you like peace and quiet, live in Lakeshore. 2.Do work. It isn't easy to get good grades here. 3.Come into college with AP credits. It will allow you to choose classes sooner, and it will prepare you for exams. 4. Get involved with a student org. 5.Get a good pair of shoes. You will walk everywhere. 6. Read the Badger Herald on Wednesdays.

    Madison gives Ivy League education at the price of a state school. Tuition, housing, and food costs about $20,000 per year if you live in the dorms. The dorms are $3,000 per semester, but most apartments on campus are much cheaper.

    I was disappointed that I only got into Madison, but I love it here, and I don't ever want to leave. The social environment in the dorms is great. There is always something going on campus, and there is a variety of student organizations for everyone. You will not be bored. Everything I need is pretty much located within 1 mile. Madison has a great bus system and biker friendly streets if you don't like walking. Dorm food is good and there is plenty of cheap restaurants on campus. Madison is also very safe.
    Am learning a lot

    Madison prides itself in having difficult courses. Most professors try to write exams that have an average score of about 60-70%, and they succeed. The exams sometimes force students to take knowledge learned in class one step further. Classes at Madison also move at a faster pace than other UW schools. In the end, you decide how much you learn by choosing to attend class and study, which you need to do to succeed at Madison.

    The great thing about Madison is that there is something for everyone. However my one warning would be that if you do handle cold well than this probably not the school for you. The large campus requires a good amount of travel to get from class to class and Wisconsin winters can be brutal.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get involved early. Find activities and clubs that interest you and join them. Also live in the dorms you're first year. Yeah the rooms are small and you share a bathroom, but the experience makes it all worthwhile. The people on my floor have quickly become some of my best friends. So much so that I have missed them everyday over winter break. Lastly, VOLUNTEER!! Volunteer activities are everywhere on campus and they look great when applying to programs and graduate schools and of course, scholarships.

    Yes Madison is more expensive than the other UW state schools and is significantly even more expensive for out-of-state students, but the atmosphere and multitude of activities for students makes it all worthwhile. Plus you will be pushed to further your learning by those around you and upon graduation you will have a degree from one of the country's truly world-class universities!

    HOW COULD I NOT!!! Badger football games in the student section are one of a kind (although not always child-friendly). Plus the my floormates in my dorm are awesome. From forming a human dragon to weekly movie nights, we are inseparable. Plus I don't know if you heard of the Battle of Bascom, but if you have not YOUTUBE it!! A 3,000 person snowball fight equals awesome. Plus Madison has a beautiful and relaxing campus sitting on a lake.
    Am learning a lot

    Madison has a world-class faculty full of brilliant and interesting (my chemistry professor was in the 1992 Olympics) instructors. Also my first semester instructors were very open about providing help and keeping their office hours to explain any questions. Because it is a very intelligent and motivated student body, students push each other to learn.

    I would get involved with the honors program because the class sizes are smaller, the advisors are always willing to help, there are more opportunities,and you can get scholarship. Also, try to read the textbook, GO TO CLASS, study before exams, and ask for help when you are behind.

    It's not very expensive especially if you live in Minnesota or WI.

    I absolutely love it here because the professors are so nice and they really help you to get involved in class so that you learn a lot. Plus what I love most is that you can research a topic of your choice and either get money or credits AND you can study abroad inexpensively at universities in many different countries. On the weekends there is always something to do.

    There are a wide variety of classes so you broaden your knowledge of many topics. Additionally, the classes in your major go into good detail about the topic so you learn a lot of interesting things.

    UW Madison hosts students from around the world and is stationed in a city which harbors tons of cultural and social opportunities. A student can literally do anything. You can see the campus or take a nature walk, go to the gym or go shopping on State St. It's all here.

    Even though UW Madison is a public school, the quality of education rivals even the best of private schools. In addition to its stellar academic program, UW Madison offers numerous research programs for students; you can even find a job in research as an undergraduate! There are so many opportunities to learn about so many different things. It is truly a campus for the developing mind.

    Students who are have a strong desire to pursue research should consider the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a highly-ranked research institution, there are many opportunities available to be involved in ground-breaking research.
    Tips for prospective students

    Visit the campus more than once if you can. The campus is really large, but after spending a few days at it, you will soon find that it is sizable. The courses are difficult, and many students do not do well in their first semester as they adjust to a more independent living situation. You must be ready for this adjustment and actively participate in making your education the best it can be. Madison provides many educational resources, but it is up to you to take advantage of them.

    This university is expensive, but they provide an enormous amount of resources for their students. If you have the money and can flourish independently, Madison is a wonderful deal. However, some of the smaller Wisconsin colleges are also very good and much cheaper.

    The city of Madison is a wonderful place for college students. Transportation is always available, and there are many opportunities for social engagement. The campus also creates a smaller community in the enormousness of the city.

    The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a wonderful institution. It provides all of its students with an abundance of resources for gaining an understanding of the world through multiple perspectives. In my first semester, I acquired more knowledge than in my entire high school career. All of the faculty at the university want to assist students, and those who take advantage of the resources provided will succeed.

    Campus Safety

    Madison has a rather large campus, and it's in the heart of the city. There is a number you can call for a safe walk or ride back to your dorm. You can call the police at any time if you feel unsafe, and there are emergency buttons around campus you can press that call the cops to that location within minutes. I personally haven't had any issues (I have walked across campus back to my dorm at midnight without trouble) although it is a little scary. On the other hand, a lot of problems come from binge drinking, which may result in alcohol poisoning or rape. So I guess as long as you act responsibly, you'll be okay.
    Greek Life

    I personally am not involved in Greek Life or know much about it. For the most part, I think Greek Life on Madison is very satisfactory and popular.
    Clubs and Activities

    With over 350 student organizations at Madison, it's easy to find the one(s) that is right for you!

    All students. You've gotta have an open mind though because there are so many types of people on campus.

    Lots of people jump into Lake Mendota... When we won the game allowing us to go to the Rose Bowl, a bunch of students jumped into Lake Mendota, despite the freezing temperature.

    Madison is extremely expensive. Though it is a very nice school and campus, I dislike paying so much for housing and tuition along with books.
    What to do for fun

    There is SO MUCH to do for fun! For example... See a musical performance, go eat (or people watch) on State Street, go to one of over 30 libraries on campus, jump into Lake Mendota, kayak, bike, go for a run, play sports, use the rock climbing wall in Union South, walk through the beautiful Centennial Gardens, order famous Mac&Cheese Pizza from Ian's Pizza, sit and chat with friends on the Memorial Union terrace, try a fish taco, go shopping at the West Towne Shopping Mall, visit Eagle Heights, go lazer tagging, sit on Bascom Hill [and sleep]... and so much more!!!
    Food and Dining

    There is at least one cafeteria building near the dorms. The food is decent. If you aren't feeling the cafeteria kind of food, there are countless restaurants on State Street or scattered throughout Madison's campus that you can eat from!
    Dorm Life

    All in all, I've heard very good things about dorm life. For the most part, it is a positive experience. I have heard of problems in the Southeast dorms though because they are known as the 24/7 party dorms and people do weird, annoying, and/or disgusting things sometimes...
    Academic Rigor

    Madison is one of the top schools in the nation. So, it has a more demanding course than many other colleges in Wisconsin.
    Tips for prospective students

    I suggest living on Lakeshore, unless you're a hardcore party animal. Get to know the bus systems - especially the free ones. Go to Union South to get a free bus pass. SIGN UP FOR SEASON FOOTBALL TICKETS! (I suggest you have at least 2 computers during that endeavor as well) Don't stress yourself out too much because classes are difficult. Be outgoing and make new friends. Keep an open mind.

    Madison is probably one of the most diverse colleges in the state of Wisconsin. Here, I have met a variety of people from all sorts of different backgrounds and have been introduced to a multitude of experiences. All in all, there's no place like Madison.

    Active involved RA, sometimes a little camp leaderish but appreciated nonetheless. I knew she was there and cared, even when I didn't want to participate in funsy things The old dorms are being gradually replaced and the new facilities respond to the concerns about space, bathrooms, quiet etc.

    I have been challenged, my interest sustained, and I have gotten the support I needed.
    Tips for prospective students

    Find a place to study and identify that as your workplace early in the year. (You can always relocate.) For me, it was a great library with good light and views of the lake, quiet atmosphere, surrounded by serious students who spurred my best intentions. 2. Schedule in down time first or you will take off at the absolutely worst time!! Balance is crucial, and you'll never feel done with academic work, you could always do more.

    SAFE walk is a huge part of campus, allowing students to call SAFE walkers to come and walk them across campus to where they want to go without having to walk alone. There are also free SAFE ride bus routes that run throughout campus and neighboring areas off campus for students to get home safely if they need.
    Greek Life

    There are different groups for all different types of students, from agriculture to chemistry and more. Many of the groups do a lot of charity events and such and throw a lot of fun parties and events.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are so many clubs out there for every single major, and orientation makes it easy to get involved, allowing incoming freshman to put their names on e-mail lists of potential clubs that students are interested in.

    It's great for students looking for a good time as well as students who want to receive a great education.

    It's tradition for freshman to walk up Bascom Hill and rub Abraham Lincoln's foot. When students graduate, they get to climb up on his lap for a picture. It is said that if you don't rub his foot, you will not succeed and will have bad luck at the university.

    UW-Madison is one of the cheepest universities in the Big 10 but offers one of the best educations around.
    What to do for fun

    State street has a lot of restaurants that students can enjoy that are decently priced, and the two unions offer weekly concerts and movies for free. Lower Sett in Union South also offers rock climbing, bowling, and other fun games for students to relax from classes. And of course, there are always parties to go to and have fun at.
    Food and Dining

    While there are a lot of options, much of the food gets repetitive and boring after a few months. Markets and stores on and near campus help greatly with getting groceries or necessities to survive eating in the dorms.

    The rooms are decently sized for dorm rooms, and there are plenty of choices for where to live, having dorms spread throughout all of campus.
    Academic Rigor

    While classes are challenging, TA's and professors are almost always available at some point to help.

    Make sure to get help when needed. Coursework can very easily become overwhelming and there are a lot of challenging courses, but there's plenty of help out there. Get out and join a club or something that interests you; you'll have a lot more fun on campus and meet a lot of new people.

    The Madison Campus Safety Division takes EXTRA steps to ensure that all their students are safe. From the Safe-Ride cab to the Safe-Walk, Madison offers services to their students that allows them to be protected at all times during their stay there on campus

    Greek life is out there. You will hear about them from the moment you get on campus to the minute you step off campus. Not to mention the countless weekends their Houses will be mentioned by your peers. Greek life is a good place to get involved if you seek a close family-like relationship with your peers.

    The Memorial Union and the College Library are two places you MUST visit at least once a semester. There is more to do there than simply a place to study.     Like they say, What looks good isn't always good for you. The food is delicious. It will keep you coming back, but the nutritional value for most food, other than salad, isn't to nice.

    It's exciting, it's fun, and it's something to experience. Never will you get the experience to walk through a hallway and socialize with every person possible. A conversation is waiting with every step you take in a dorm hall. Make sure you build a good relationship with your roommate. That's a relationship that will last for life.

    The rigor of the university depends on the course load. 13-15 credits is my recommendation for an incoming freshman, and be sure to be completely prepared with a plan for the next four years. Your classroom experience will be a lot more difficult if you don't have a stable plan.

    Expect greatness. Your classes will be hard, but living on your own will be harder. Madison is a great town with plenty of people to befriend. Network as much as possible

    The safe walk program is great, people walk you to and from places at night. Also, buses run pretty late so you can avoid walking home at night. And in general it is a safe campus without any negative activity for the most part.
    Greek Life

    I am not part of greek life but my roommate is. And everyone in it tells me the experience is great: it gets intense but you meet so many amazing people and the feeling of having a sort of family is great.
    Clubs and Activities

    There is a club for everyone. UW-Madison has a fair at the Kohl Center that displays all clubs, sororities,, fraternities, etc and it's a HUGE event that is nice to go to so you can sign up for clubs and get info emailed to you.

    A well known tradition that UW-Madison is famous for is the Jump Around before the third and fourth quarters of the badger football games. It is truly something that every badger should experience at least once. Another tradition is eating cheese curds. An unusual event also is the freakfest on state street. It is such a big, campus wide event that occupies all of state street and people come in costumes and it's just great. It's on a grand scale. Another unusual tradition is graduating law students toss white canes over the goalpost at Homecoming. Legend is that if they catch the canes on the other side, they'll win their first case.

    Education here is great, the teachers really teach for the most part. Also, the school is ranked pretty high up so you are guaranteed some prestige. Also, it's such a beautiful campus with so many resources that it's so fun going here. And we are going to the Rose Bowl this year: GO BADGERS.
    What to do for fun

    There is much to do for fun. Dorms have events going on, like movie nights, trips to a laser-tag place for very cheap, trips to Chicago for very cheap, singing groups performing, and of course PARTYING! Also, a lot of singers and bands have concerts here in Madison so there's always something to do. If anything, hanging with the people in the dorm is always fun.
    Food and Dining

    To be honest, at first it may seem amazing to be able to get pizza and pasta and all that everyday. However, I found myself sick of dorm food before the semester even ended. I just missed my home-cooked meals and variety I had back home. You realize after a while that there really isn't much variety in dining halls.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life here is pretty fun. You really do make friends with people you'll spend the rest of the year going on ice cream runs with, doing homework together, etc. And the residence committees try hard and successfully engage students in fun, free events with free food and games. It definitely isn't boring, and people are always willing to make new friends.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes hear are for the most part pretty serious. What I mean by that is that there's a lot of material that you shouldn't put off thinking that you'll catch up later. If you pay attention and do homework, you are definitely getting an A. Tests can be pretty hard, but again a lot of classes have great curves. So just give it your best.
    Tips for prospective students

    1. If you aren't used to temperatures below 50 degrees, get ready to face the cold of wisconsin! 2. USE YOUR RESOURCES- there is help everywhere for every subject, and it makes a difference, especially between an A and AB. 3. Sit in the front of the class, especially if it's a huge lecture hall, because you can hear the professor better and when it comes time to leave, the back of the room starts packing up very loudly so you can't finish hearing the entire lecture. 4. Go to your professor's office hours! It shows the professor you actually care, and when giving you a grade they will try to make it so that you can get the highest grade for your performance.

    For getting in: be a well rounded student and do a lot of extracurricular activities, as well as take as many advanced classes as possible--do the work before it REALLY counts. Once you are in: Stay on top of your school work! It is really easy to fall behind. Get involved in something outside of class--it will break your days up. Be vocal in class, make yourself known Sit up front---it keeps you from falling asleep

    Yes, we are the most expensive UW school, however, you get way more for what you are paying for. We have one of the cleanest campuses I have seen thus far, and it is constantly being updated and renovated. We have amazing teachers and people who are experts in their fields. Some of these teachers have won Nobel prizes! We have a brand new health center and almost all of your appointments or labs are covered if you ever need it. We also have like 300 student organizations that receive money from the campus, meaning, if there is a sport/club you want to join, there is one. For instance we have a water ski team, a sky diving team, and a fishing team-awesome, really what other school can say that?
    Am enjoying being here

    Madison is also known for its heavy partying, social events, and Big 10 sports. Those are all correct. However, just because they are on campus does not mean you have to participate which is the beauty of it. For those of you who have school spirit, you are going to love football games. Pay attention to sign up dates for tickets or you are going to pay a lot for them!
    Am learning a lot

    Madison has an impressive reputation for its academics and I can say I agree almost wholeheartedly. The only problem with some classes, specifically science related ones, is that there are a few professors that are here solely for research and teach only because they have to which makes the class uninteresting and repetitive. However, there is a major for everyone on campus, and for that I know we are incredibly lucky. There are also a ton of classes that are purely for enjoyment, and I recommend taking one of those at least once a semester just to break up your schedule.

    Be sure to visit campus! Check out State Street (a shopping and eating pedestrian mall extending from campus to the Capitol building), visit the Memorial Union to sit on the terrace and enjoy some UW-made Babcock ice cream! Sit on Abraham Lincoln's lap at the top of Bascom Hill for a photo op and talk to some great UW students!

    Tuition is going up with the recession, but as a public university in-state tuition is reasonable. Need-based scholarships are available, but merit-based ones are sometimes few and far between. But, in exchange for your money you'll be getting one of the best educations available--the UW is sometimes reerred to as a public Ivy League school.
    Am enjoying being here

    Life on campus is fantastic! The school is situated in Madison, which is not only the capital of Wisconsin, but also a great cultural center! There are always great concerts, art shows, speakers, and the farmer's market is a don't-miss weekly event. The university brings in great events as well--everyone from the Dalai Lama to Richard Dawkins to Ludacris. Though it's a big university (30,000+), you never feel lost in the crowd. There are lots of clubs and organizations to help you find a niche or two or ten! And let's be honest, the UW football experience can't be beat!

    It pays to go to a respected research university. The professors in all departments are fantastic and include award-winners and leading experts in their fields. There are classes covering all majors and interests. Classes are challenging, but always thought-provoking and every professor and TA has office hours to help explain, clarify, help or just chat!

    If you love the winter, are fond of big crowds, parties, and lean more to the left (politically, speaking), then the University of Wisconsin-Madison is the school for you.

    With over 30,000 students, it is really easy to get lost in the crowd. Therefore, it's probably in your best interest to associate yourself with a club, organization, or sorority/fraternity, so that the large campus seems less daunting.

    There are quite a few activities that are offered at this campus, in addition to a high-quality academic program. However, for a public-university, the price-tag on this school is a little higher than comparable schools with similar programs.
    Did enjoy being here

    As a warm-weather-loving, traditionalist, military-brat, I was shocked by both the cold weather and the exceptionally liberal attitude employed by both the students and the professors. That being said, however, I managed to find my niche in smaller circles, such as the Model United Nations Club and the Catholic Church. If you can withstand the frigid winters, and enjoy a good party after a long week's work, then the University of WI-Madison is the place for you.
    Did learn a lot

    There are a vast amount of courses to select from: everything from African Storytelling to Zoology is offered. The professors are all experts in their fields and are willing to help you. The Teacher's Assistants (TAs) are also very helpful, and sometimes easier to talk to than professors, since they can be less intimidating. Expect the majority of your classes to be in a lecture-fashion, and don't be shocked to have classes with 300 to 500 other students. The class sizes typically get smaller, once you get into more selective or advanced courses. In addition to a wide variety of classes, students can also learn a lot from the wide selection of clubs to join, the free after class lectures from special guests, and other events on campus.

    I think that anyone who wants to learn a lot and take advantage of some incredible opportunities should come to this school. The campus is big, but it is easy to make the campus seem smaller if you join clubs. It's a wonderful place and I can't say enough about it!

    --GET INVOLVED!!! I know that tons of people are going to tell you this, but its true! Find a club that sounds cool and join it. --I would recommend living in a learning community. It makes campus seem smaller and you get to go on some cool trips. --Get help as soon as you are struggling. It was really hard for me to admit that I needed help in a class because I never needed it in high school. It's important to realize that professors, TA's, and tutors are there to help you!

    Tuition for this school is pretty high, especially if you're an out of state student; however, I think it is worth every penny. There are too many positive things about this school to list, and their financial aid department offers tons of different scholarships and other ways to help pay for school.
    Am enjoying being here

    I adore Madison! I've met some really great people and have gotten the opportunity to participate in two things I love: ultimate frisbee and scientific research. There really is a club for everyone at this school, so I recommend going to a bunch of start- up meetings clubs and finding something that interests you!

    The classes at this university are challenging, but the professors are wonderful and willing to help students. The university offers countless of interesting and unique classes, and I would strongly urge that you take classes that sound fascinating. If you take classes because you WANT to take them, you'll get more out of the class than if you only took it to satisfy a requirement.

    city slickers, knowledge hunters, party girls and boys but only if you live off campus, work-a-holics, bikers, Wal-Mart employees/transfers, specialty seekers, persons greatly interested in research and internship opportunties (loads of them offered!)...must have a high tolerance for crowds, annoying people, heavy accents (there are a lot of internationals here), crazy moped drivers, zippy bikers, and intense work loads

    Consider the costs of on-campus living as compared to off-campus living. It can be a lot cheaper plus you get more freedom. However, you do lose the social aspect of dorm living. Consider getting a job to assist in living expenses. Madison has a great bus system that will pretty much take you anywhere at anytime. Don't bring a car or moped unless you absolutely have. Bikes are great - there are miles of bike lanes everywhere to use. Madison like to celebrate (Freak Fest for Holloween, etc.) and has a lot to offer - make time to get active in Madison and on campus.

    I am an out-of-state student from IL. The whole reason I came here was that it offered my major (Poultry Science). While the price is riduculous, I believe that going for the education is more important than the price tag. I live off campus in a studio apartment, allowing me to spend the same amount of money on r&b in the dorm as living by myself, plus I get more mobility and freedom. You get access to a lot of workshops, reduced rates, and a free unlimited bus pass if you qualify (worth a million times its weight in gold!).
    Am enjoying being here

    As a transfer coming from a small school, I thought that I would be able to handle going to a large university. The fact is, all of your classes, unless specific to your major (and even then, sometimes not), you are one of several hundred to several scores students the teachers have. In freshman and lower level courses, it felt more like they were trying to pass me instead of teaching me. I feel that the smaller, more specific classes where you can get to know your teacher and learn from them are the best ways to go through college - in all, loved the smaller classes, hated the large lectures halls, busy city, busy campus, and a lot of autonomy. If you like cities, then this is a great school. If you prefer a more personal, hand-on education, I suggest you switch your major to something VERY specific and focused so you can take those smaller courses.

    One of the largest benefits in going to large campus is the vast diversity of knowledge. Literally, there is a library within a block of where ever you are, the teacher/professors are (almost always) competant and forewright in their understandings, and there is no limit to what you can learn or want to learn.

    This campus is great for students who love to be social and outgoing. There is still a place for students who enjoy more peace and quiet and who may be more introverted. There are all walks of life here!

    The campus is large with tons of students but it's not as overwhelming as it seems. I never got lost and students are helpful if you stop to ask where a room or building is. Don't feel intimidated by the size. There are plenty of ways to fit in between clubs, sports, involvement with dorms and housing, and many other things. Everyone wants to make new friends and meet new people. Classes can be large but they will usually have a smaller discussion so you can get your questions answered.

    The campus is beautiful. There are lots of fun places to hang out from State Street to the Terrace to Bascom Hill. There's always an event or show going on and most things are cheap or free for students. Everyone is involved on campus and there are many activities for all interests with clubs and sports.

    There are a variety of majors and classes offered here. Scheduling classes is a little challenging but it is doable if you stay organized and on top of what classes you need for your major. There is much to take if you are undecided to help you get a feel for different majors.

    I know you've probably heard this a million times and ask yourself 'why is this a tip?' but go to class. It's crazy how many people don't; the day of my first midterm I came into the lecture hall and there was twice as many people there as usual class days. Go to a Badger Game. If you like football try getting tickets, but if you don't go to at least one game; it's an experience of a lifetime.

    When I was looking for schools my friends would always say 'You're just paying for the name,' but that is completely wrong. Compared to other UW schools it doesn't actually cost that much more plus the little extra you do pay is worth it from the experience.
    Am enjoying being here

    I love it here so far. It has the best of both worlds. You can head over to Lakeshore and enjoy nature and the quiet, or you can head over to Southeast where it is definitely not quiet but there's always something going on.
    Am learning a lot

    Madison is a place where if you want to learn you will. The courses are pretty fast pace but the professors and TA's (at least in my experience) are always more than willing to help.

    UW Madison is definitely a party school, so if you're interested in going to frat parties and drinking (legally, I hope) then this would be a good school for you. If you're not one of those people, don't start running yet! You won't be alone or lonely; there are tons of other people who aren't partiers (like me!) and the University offers many other extracurricular activities.
    Tips for prospective students

    I would recommend living in the dorms for the first couple years. Even though they are expensive, and they have the stigma attached to them, it's the best way to meet people and will allow you to make lasting friendships.
    Bang for the buck

    While this is a top university, and has so many opportunities for learning, I would say that it is a bit overprices. Mind you, I am a college student fully financially independent from her parents, so I've had to take out loans to pay for college.
    Am learning a lot

    Not only do you learn a lot inside the classroom, but you will learn so much about yourself. The classes are interesting, varied, and (at times) difficult. With such a big campus, you'll meet a ton of people and get to try many new experiences as well.

    Liberal, open-minded students who like new experiences and a diverse crowd. Environmentalist types will fit right in here; it's a very green city and campus. LGBT students, like myself, fit in perfectly here, and they make sure to go out of their way to make you feel accepted.

    For applying, write a good, meaningful essay. It does not have to be long; think quality over quantity. My essay was just a little under 2 pages. While you're here, make sure to be open to new experiences and willing to meet new people; believe me, you'll make friends easily. Take unusual, challenging classes and always make sure to work hard.

    For a public school, the tuition is not bad. It is easy to get a job here, from my own experience, to cover smaller expenses.
    Am enjoying being here

    I have made some of the best friends I've ever had here. The locals are very, very kind and accepting. Madison itself is one of the most liberal, open-minded cities I've ever lived in, and for the first time in my life I am able to be absolutely open with who I am.
    Am learning a lot

    During my first semester, I got to take classes on Greek mythology and latin, things I did not even imagine I would take during high school; things I did not have the opportunity to take up until now. It was an extremely rewarding experience, and, even if it does not pertain to my major I still felt like it taught me a lot about critical thinking and essay writing.

It is especially great for students who are looking for a bigger campus and don't mind having a couple of 500 person classes.     If your even thinking about applying to the University of Wisconsin-Madison I highly suggest taking a visit. The tours provide you with a lot of great information and you can get a feel for the university. Trust me once you get to the top of Bascom hill overlooking the capital and Lake Mendota you'll fall in love.

    As a perspective transfer student, I was really setting my expectations high for this University, and it has surpassed them all. Students are given great courses and professors, a diversity of student organizations, and an overall elite education at a public school price...what more could you ask for.

    The University of Wisconsin- Madison, and the city of Madison in general, has so much to offer. There are tons of student organization to get involved with, daily events at the Union and around town, not to mention all of the great shops and restaurants on State Street. Its the perfect combination of city meets suburbia.

    The prerequisite courses as well as the courses for the School of Education are all very challenging yet rewarding. I have had excellent professors thus far and have learned something new in almost every lecture. I am very happy with all of the courses I have taken. I truly feel like I am getting a great education.

    This is a wonderful institution for students who want a great education, and a great social experience. Also, any student who has strong self-motivation. Because this is a large school, a student has to be independent and in control of his or her education. Students from the Midwest will be happy to know that this campus is no exception when it comes to warm personalities, even if the weather gets a little frigid.
    Tips for prospective students

    I would recommend taking a trip to campus for a tour and information. Be sure to take an extra hour or two to walk around campus and the downtown area, talk to some of the students passing by and take in the sights for a true feel of the school. If you are able, try to attend a football, basketball, or hockey game to capture the Badger spirit.
    Bang for the buck

    For me, attending the UW is very affordable. I am a Wisconsin resident, and I pay in-state tuition. However, for students from out of state, this could be pricey. The out of state tuition is still cheaper than many private institutions, and many scholarships are available for people from other areas. Truthfully, there are many scholarships available for any student as long as he or she is willing to search and apply.

    When I graduated high school, I really wanted to go far away for college. Because I grew up in Madison, I wanted to venture out to other places. After spending the semester on the east coast, I realized that the people in the Midwest tend to be more welcoming and friendly than people from other regions. When I returned, I noticed that there are many more things to do on campus since it is in the heart of Madison, not on the outskirts of the city. No matter where you stay on campus, you can walk to main shopping areas, restaurants and bars, movies, museums, and events on the square. I would highly recommend attending some of the sporting events; all of the athletic teams are very successful. The fans and student section give the team great support and provide an exciting atmosphere.
    Academic Rigor

    I originally went to Boston College, hoping that a private school would help me achieve a great education, but I was unimpressed. I found myself bored and resorted to daydreaming through all of my classes. I transferred to UW Madison since I was unhappy with my experience out east. So far, all of my classes at the UW have been intruiging and challenging, including the subjects I did not particularly enjoy during high school. The professors are fantastic, and the TAs that run discussions and other sections that supplement the lectures are more helpful than I could have imagined. This is a great school if you want to get well educated. Also, there are a countless amount of resources to enhance your learning.

    To succeed at UW, you really have to be willing to work hard and put in more effort than you did/do in high school. It's a great school, but you have to work to get good grades. Professors challenge you here and will not put up with laziness. You are in charge of your education and how much you learn here. You can make this university as big or as small as you want. The choice is yours.

    I think it is 1000000000000% worth the money I am paying for tuition. I think that housing costs are pretty outrageous, but I look past that because I love everything about this place.

    I guess I can't really say much because I'm still a high school senior, but I know for me I'm going to have to teach myself to study. In high school everything was laid out for us, but in college I hope I don't become lazy and procrastinate as much as I did in high school. And don't miss out on the great sports and clubs that Madison has to offer.

    Madison's cost are reasonable, although I heard that they will be raising tuition by $2000 every year. I didn't really get any financial aid except for an actuarial science scholarship, so I wish I could have gotten a little more help. But through internships and jobs I think the cost is manageable.

    Madison is less than 2 hours from my house, so it's not like I'll be homesick. Plus Madison has great sports teams, especially football and hockey. Then there's State street with all the restaurants you'll ever need, and there are hundreds of extracurricular clubs on campus. I don't think I'll ever be bored when I attend Madison next year.
    Will learn a lot

    I am planning on majoring in actuarial science, and Madison has one of the best actuarial programs in the nation. The professors have been extremely helpful so far, and at least for my major we have one credit courses that help us review for the actuarial exams. I feel that the professors are there for you when you need them, and I'm not even a student yet but they are always more than happy to help me out.

    If you learn great on your own and don't like one-on-one communication with professors you should do fine on campus. If you prefer smaller classes and being 'known' essentially by the professor I wouldn't suggest it.

    If you're transferring from another school get as many general courses as possible done so you aren't stuck in a huge lecture hall. I found the large classes to be very difficult but when you got to the smaller classes they were rather enjoyable.

    The tuition is rather high for being a public school. Though there is a huge variety in courses which is nice, though I think it would be better if they were able to break general courses into smaller sections.

    I loved being at UW-Madison and I loved the variety in the courses available. Many classes I had taken were only available at UW-Madison.

    In a majority of my classes I did not learn very much. I do not enjoy being in such large classes. It's not very personal when you are in a lecture hall with 300 other students. Discussion sections didn't help much as a majority of the TA's do not speak English very well. The smaller classes I was in I loved and felt I learned more.

    Don't overload your credits your first year. University is extremely different from high school and the first thing you will notice is how much smarter everyone is and how much harder it is to get an A in your classes.

    As an out-of-state student this University provides the most bang for your buck. At about 35,000 a year this is easily one of the least expensive out-of-state schools one can attend. Even more impressive is the closeness to the price of certain UC such as UCLA, UCB, and UCSD.

    I truly am enjoying every moment of my stay at Madison, the large class body, high level of class spirit, and from what i have witnessed an extremely friendly community. Not only is Madison great for academics and research but it is also great for having a social life and being able to choose from over 800 student organizations.

    The atmosphere is great and extremely conducive to studying because of the myriad of options you have for where you want to study. As for the classes i have been extremely impressed with the amount i have learned, having classes that have 100+ students was intimidating but after a while i realized that as long as you worked hard a 100+ class is not that different from a 40 person class (except the individual attention you would receive from the teacher, and this can still be remedied by going to office hours).

    Wisconsin is great for social people who love Big Ten sports. The campus is beautiful and the people here are really nice.

    Make sure that you apply early and tour all the schools you're interested in! If a school does not offer you a financial aid package that works, do not be afraid to call the financial aid office and ask them about options. A school may surprise you with an offer!

    Like most Big Ten schools, Wisconsin is expensive, but they gave me better financial aid and loan options than other Big Ten schools. There are plenty of student jobs on campus and in the city. I believe Wisconsin is worth the money you pay.

    The campus is beautiful down by the lake and the people are really nice. I love how social it is; there is always something fun to do.

    Each class teaches you a lot in a short amount of time, so make sure you are on top of your homework and readings. With some of the larger, introductory classes you will have a lecture and a discussion. With lecture and discussion, it allows you to go more in depth and ask questions about what you do not understand.

Be very smart about budgeting your food expenses so as not having to go to your parents too often to ask for more money.
    Dorm Life

    Great way to make a lot of friends for life. Being there only a couple of months has already led me to meet many people whom I will be close with for many years to come. Always keep your door open and make friends on different floors than the one you live on.
    Academic Rigor

    Each professor is there to help, use office hours and yours TAs as much as you can. Use the libraries, tutoring services, and academic advisers available to help you in any class you may need help in. Do not be afraid to ask questions to anyone who can help you!

    Full embrace the college experience. Join a club or two, meet as many people as possible and just have fun. Put your academics above all, but having a balance between your academic and social life is the most important thing you can do heading into college.

    i am actually transferring for my major, which madison does not offer. obviously i would like to stay, but there were a few things i did dislike about the system: i am not someone who learns in a large environment, i need personal relationships with my professors and classrooms, because i feel lost otherwise. thought i wanted to get away from the feel of a small town, but i end up going right back to it. it is beyond frustrating to be accepted into madison, and then be in constant competition to simply declare a major. for many of the majors you need to apply to get into that specific school. if i'm paying for the education, i should be able to study what i want. i love saying that i go to madison, but the experience i'm getting is not worth the reputation, i need to go somewhere that can get me into classes i want to take and get me on the right track for my future, since college is about preparing yourself for later, not just about partying. extremely liberal, but to each their own! living is extremely overpriced. i could nit-pick at many things, but about every college there will be things you dislike.
    Food and Dining

    pops and eds are fine, not too bad, but you will get sick of it as expected. downtown madison has so much to offer and it is amazing how much there is to do, as long as you're willing to pay.
    Dorm Life

    as nice and ogg and smith are, go with witte or sellery. sure, you'll suffer during the first few months, but the people you'll meet are much more open and fun than the busy athletes or already established sophomores in the newer dorms.
    Academic Rigor

    classes are hard, especially when you're in a lecture of 200 most of the time. it is nice to disappear in class once in a while, but unless you are self-motivated and are willing to teach yourself most things, i would go for a smaller school. or hire a tutor.

    people will tell you to get involved in college, bottom line is that it is not as easy as it sounds. madison has much to offer, but it is difficult for those of us who are more reserved. most i can say is be willing to step outside of your comfort zone.

    classes at madison are challenging, but not impossible. if students take a reasonable course load, apply themselves, and use their resources correctly, success if very attainable.

    i can only speak for my dorm, but where i live is a very nice place. i have a wonderful view, great friends and many opportunities offered by program coordinators in the building. the building is very well managed and i very much enjoy it.

    academic rigor varies from class to class, but overall uw madison involves a lot of hard work. it is most definitely possible, but the effort must be put forth first. a lot of help is available, but the student has to really want to do well,

    don't hesitate to get help. there are many opportunities such as office hours, teaching assistants, free tutoring, and much more all there just to help. the campus is big but you can get a lot of personal attention, all one must do is ask.

    During the day the campus is an overall safe place, but I would never walk alone at night here. It's a city-like area, so there are many unusual types of people here and on weekend nights the streets are filled with bumbling drunks. There are safety towers nearby, and we do have the safe walk system, or always have a buddy.

    To be honest, I don't know that much about the Greek life. However if you don't want to do it, you won't feel pressured because only 10% of Madison is involved in the Greek life.

    There are tons of Student Orgs to get involved in! Orgs for your major, for fun activities, service clubs and much more. There are also intramural sports for you to form a team and play in!

    Science and Engineering. Those are the two biggest types of programs here and if you graduate from here, you'll be set in the future.

    Bascom. It is all about Bascom hill here. It is right across from State Street, and on super sunny gorgeous days there will always be tons of students studying and laying out, just soaking up the sun which we don't get often at this time of year.

    I personally think that this school is such a bargain. As a science major, this school is constantly in the top ten in the United States along with Ivy Leagues and California schools, so I think that I am getting a great education at a very affordable price.
    What to do for fun

    Party. Madison is a huge party school and is always rated number one or two by Playboy. There are other things to do to, like go to the movies, go shopping on State or at one of the malls, and outdoor activities, but really the man thing here is partying.
    Food and Dining

    I think the Housing food here is generically good compared to other colleges. There is always a wide variety of options. We also have tons of restaurants to eat at that are fantastic, like Potbelly, Noddles and Company, and Ian's.
    Dorm Life

    I really like the dorm life here. The nice thing about Madison is you can pick your dorm based on what you like. Typically the hardcore partiers stay in Sellery and Witte, while Lakeshore is very nice and scenic. It's up to you where you want to live, but wherever you do, you can guarantee you'll be able to meet friends.
    Academic Rigor

    This school is tough. I personally have stayed in multiple weekends to catch up on homework, but you can definitely avoid that. found the most time where I stay in is when I have a tough midterm coming up. So if you study super hard during the week, you should be fine.

    In order to really succeed here, you have to have really applied and challenged yourself at high school. If you have done that, I think you'll do just fine.

    There are over 700 student organizations at UW-Madison, so getting involved in one or more of those can be fun. But really, it is Madison, and the common way to have fun is to go out and walk around on State Street or go to a party. You meet a lot of new people wherever you go.

    State Street offers a TON of different selections for food from Ian's Pizza (the best pizza ever) to Mia Za's, an italian restaurant. In terms of dining hall food, if you're a picky eater, finding good food in the dining halls may not be the easiest although there are a lot of options there too.

    Depending on what dorms you live in, the dorm life can be either good or bad. It all depends on what kind of atmosphere you want: Southeast dorms: more social and more urban Lakeshore dorms: more quiet and on the lake (more relaxed)

    On campus there are many facilities to utilize to be safe on campus. They offer free cab services to take you home, people to walk you home, and safety poles that offer police assistance. The cab service and sake walkers are all available with a phone call. The safety poles have a button for you to push and police officers will be there within 60 seconds!

    Greek Life is awesome here! I highly encourage rushing because I know that you will find your perfect fit somewhere within it! And if you don't, atleast you tried. The Greek System here also highly values grades and learning so you will not be steered away from your education!

Our campus also has a few favorite songs that, if asked, anyone would know all of the words. It's a pretty special place to be!

    Advice for students would be to get to know professors and TAs. They are there to help and they may seem intimidating at first but they are extremely helpful and supportive. Also, explore Madison and everything that it has to offer. It is such a versatile city and after two years of living there I still have so much to discover! Lastly, meet new people as much as you can! Ask people to grab coffee, go for a run, or study together! Madison can seem lonely at times so making friends can make all the difference.

    Really anything you want to do. Again, since Madison is a college town, there is an endless amount of concerts, campus-wide parties, football games, bars, and outdoor activities at your disposal. The hardest part is fitting it all in between studying.

Whether you're watching your budget and want to eat in the dorm cafeterias, are looking to grab a quick meal at the terrace between classes, or are craving late-night fast food on state, there are a myriad of options.

    UW-Madison is an extremely well-rounded university with a great campus. Not only does it consistently rank among the top 50 universities in the world, it is consistently ranked as one of the top party schools in the country. Badgers work very hard yet play even harder.

    Madison is on the list for the safest cities to live in in the entire United States. There are a lot of useful options for students to get home if they are otherwise incapable, and with so many people, there is good safety in numbers. Plus, there is a special campus police in addition to the madison police department.
    What to do for fun

    Walk in any direction on campus, you'll find something exciting. Jazz concerts on the lake, theatre performances, restaurants, exercising options, and everything the city life has to offer!

    Students across campus generally feel very safe. There is plenty of lighting when night falls and many services available for those who do not feel safe, such as SafeWalk and SafeRide. These are free services who will walk or drive students to their destinations on campus so they do not have to do so alone. Also, many of the prime study places on campus are in busier parts of the city, so there are more people around.
    Greek Life

    Greek life is a huge part of the social scene in Madison. Those involved in Greek life love it and love the sense of community. There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved in the Greek community and to volunteer for leadership opportunities.

The cafeteria food is nothing spectacular, but it is very decently priced and a good meal for students living in the dorms.     With many dorms students will find that their floor will become their family throughout the year. Students will find that they will come to know their neighbors very well. Dorm life can be very loud in the Southeastern part of campus. Lakeshore dorms are a lot calmer and quieter than Southeast dorms.

    The weed out classes can be very difficult and competitive. Keeping up with coursework is essential to doing well in classes. There is no place for procrastination with these classes. Attending class is also a major priority in keeping good grades.

    Be open to new experiences and meeting many new people. You will become very close with the people you meet here, especially when living in the dorms. Also make sure to keep up with classes, you do not want to fall behind.

    The campus is fairly safe. Southeast is a little uncomfortable as it is closer to Downtown and the bars. But if you lock your doors and walk in groups at night, you should be fine.

    Greek Life has had serious issues at Madison. It is often thought as very elitist. Partying and alcohol consumption is rampant, especially in fraternities. I'd recommend skipping it; you'll meet plenty of friends elsewhere.

    Because the campus is so large, there are hundreds of things to do on campus whether they are clubs or events going around on campus.

    Madison dorm life is the best! The resident halls are split into two areas: Lakeshore and Southeast. Lakeshore is relaxing and right on Lake Mendota; Southeast is buzzing being closer to Downtown and State Street. If you pick based on what you think you'll like, you find other people in your dorm just like you, and you will hit it off with them. My current best friends at Madison all lived on my floor.

    I'm not going to sugarcoat it: Madison is difficult. But you were accepted for a reason; the admissions office thought you could handle it by sending you an acceptance letter. If you take the effort and study/do homework daily, form study groups, go to office hours, and don't procrastinate, you will succeed at Wisconsin.

    Don't be afraid to talk to people when you first attend school. People in your class are going through all the craziness of a new campus just like you; upperclassmen have gone through those emotions at one point, too. Don't be afraid to walk up to a stranger down the hall from your room and introduce yourself; that person may become your best friend.

    During Fall, Saturdays on campus are a swarm of Red and White for Badger football games. While not everyone can score tickets (which go on sale every June and sell out within an hour), everywhere you go, you will pass by viewing parties. Other traditions focus on Bascom Hill, the stretch of land that was the original campus. From the 'Battle for Bascom' snowball fights (between Southeast and Lakeshore campus'), Tray sledding, studying under the shade of a tree on the first warm day, or rubbing Abe's foot for good luck, it's the place of tradition.

    While tuition is gradually getting pricier, it's really worth every penny. I appreciate the solid education I'm getting, I enjoy the close-knit environment I'm surrounded by, and there isn't a more gorgeous campus in Wisconsin. I've yet to meet a single person who didn't love being a Badger.
    What to do for fun

    You will never be bored in Madison. Both of the unions offer plenty of fun activities, from bowling, to rock climbing, to movies, to concerts. The Memorial Union Terrance is also a fantastic place to sit with your friends, listen to occasional free music, and enjoy fantastic views of the lake. Dorms put on great events all the time, from movie nights, to group trips. And, of course, there's no getting around it - Madison is a party school. It's impossible to walk through any of the surrounding neighborhoods on a given weekend and pass a house party or two. In reality, it's almost impossible to be bored in Madison.
    Food and Dining

    The housing food itself is good. Some colleges go by buffet style dining - Madison opts for the 'pay for what you get' method, at super cheap prices for anyone living in the dorms. Housing also makes amazing pizzas - I know of a bunch of upperclassmen who still make trips out of their way to pick up housing pizza once in a while. Otherwise, there are fantastic food and dining options outside of housing. Both the Unions (South and Memorial) offer non-housing food (pizza, sandwiches, and oriental, depending on where you go). There are plenty of dining places around campus, from quick sub places on almost every corner to the 100 or so restaurants that line State Street and the surrounding area. Along with Madison Market for groceries, you will have no problem finding some good food to eat.
    Dorm Life

    The dorms are split into two different areas - Lakeshore and Southeast. Lakeshore is a more quiet atmosphere, perfect for those who like to study/relax. Southeast is right by the Kohl center and is in the middle of the action/downtown. As for the dorms themselves, dorm life is dorm life. Make sure to befriend your House Fellow - they are great resources for any problems you have. Drying machines are free. Make sure to introduce yourself to everyone on your floor as soon as possible - it really helps you acclimate faster to a new environment.
    Academic Rigor

    Madison is a tough school to get into for a reason - you need to study for your classes. A's are not easily handed out in most courses, so make sure to visit your TA, read the material, and go to lecture. While that may seem intimidating, just know that you will learn so much. There's a reason employers are impressed when they see that you got your degree at UW - they know that you know your stuff. And, for those of you who are afraid you'll spend every night at the library? No worries - we Badgers still manage to find plenty of time for fun.
    Tips for prospective students

    For any new students, make sure to take a stroll around the student organization fair (held at the beginning of each semester). There is a group for everyone (anything from major-oriented organizations to a club for people who love cheese) that will really help you branch out from the people you meet in the dorms. Also, make sure to explore the campus before classes start. Just spend a day strolling down state street, or even scoping out where your classes are. Campus seemed huge and intimidating at first, but before long I felt right at home and the distance didn't seem bad at all. Just make sure to avoid flip flops until your feet get acclimated to walking everywhere (or at least pack band-aids)

    Best decision I've ever made. However, greek life is not as prominent at Madison compared to other school like Indiana University, and University of Illinois. If you choose not to enter the Greek system - there are just as many opportunities. It doesn't matter if you are or are not greek. I have friends all over the place

    the list goes on and on, i'm sure there is a site that lists all of them. Be sure to check out the student org fair to meet with representatives of all of them and to get involved.

    UW-Madison has one of the best and safest campuses, because the students make it that way. There is a bus that runs very late into the night for students called a SafeBus which is free, as well as SafeRide, a student taxi service to take you where you need to be, and you get a few free per semester. Lastly, there is the SafeWalk, which is a service that sends 2 students, male and female, to wherever you are, and they will walk you home no matter where you are. Plus on top of all of that, to promote more safety for savvy students, you can sleep in the libraries on campus.
    Greek Life

    Though I do not plan to participate in Greek life, I have been told that the sororities and fraternities really have a great sense of companionship and service for the city of Madison. You can also participate in the Greek academic clubs without participating in Greek life.

    As I have mentioned earlier, there are over 850 student organizations, plenty to get involved in! And if you do not like one, make your own! There are a variety of clubs, sports groups and even a cheese appreciation group, something for everyone in Madison.

    It is the most expensive campus in the UW-System, but how valuable is your education? You may be paying a bit more, but it is not for nothing, You will be graduating from one of the best programs in the area.     There is something for everyone at this campus, there are many, many, opportunity for things to do in the student unions, as well as D1 sports, clubs and inter-mural sports.     There is security when you need it, and I've never felt unsafe on campus. The cops also know that people are going out on the weekends and that there is a lot of underage drinking, but unless you are struggling to make it home or being belligerent on the streets, they will not stop you.

    Greek life isn't huge on campus, but the people I know who are a part of it really enjoy it. There are many schools where this is more important, but it's just a small part of our campus environment.

    There are plenty of research opportunities for science majors and internships at businesses and political organizations throughout the city. Because it's the capitol, there are a lot of work related opportunities. There are also hundreds of clubs to join ranging from cheese eating to sports to art to drama to politics. Everyone can find something they want to be involved in. Volunteerism is also big, and there is a huge campus volunteering center with information about all of the opportunities both on a local and national level.

    Madison is great for outgoing students who also care a lot about their academics. There is a work hard to play hard mentality, and during the school week people are extremely focused on their homework, studying for exams, extracurriculars, and other classroom related activities, but on the weekends people let loose, have a few drinks, and enjoy the college life.

    Sports games are a huge deal here, especially football, basketball, and hockey. There are also a lot of concerts and other performances around campus and throughout the city. Because the capitol is so close, there are always festivals around the square the students can take full advantage of. Clubs and student organizations also provide a lot of opportunities for new activities. Madison is also known as a great party school, and most students enjoy going out on the weekends.

    There were new dining halls built this year for freshman that have a lot more variety and a new, modern atmosphere. There is always a new place to try if you're looking to go out. Madison also has a great Farmer's Market on Saturday morning with famous loaves of spicy cheese bread.

    There have been a lot of new dorms built recently and new dining halls as well. Old dorms are still around, and they still offer comfortable living.     Classes are very challenging, but not impossible. A lot of studying is required to be successful, and it's a big change from the level of work needed to perform well in a high school class.     There are at least 5 or more events going on everyday for students, and they are free! They have free food at most events (way to save money as a college student!), so attend and join organizations that sponsor those free events.     The food here is great. If you ever find something that tastes horrible, please contact me. The variety of food is diverse and in some places can be met to fit your taste. Dining places also are cleaned frequently and most of the time offer ample room for you to enjoy your meal without feeling confined.

    I've never stayed in the dorms but from the little bits I have experienced they are really nice. The people are usually considerate and there are many community building activities and programs present in the dorms. There are even classes you can take within certain dorms that allow you to connect academically as well.

    I honestly could not feel any safer on this campus. Not only are cops right outside of my building anytime there is anything even remotely close to being unsafe, they are constantly around all the time.

    I personally am involved in Greek life, and I absolutely love it. While Greek life is big at UW-Madison, I also have a lot of friends who are not involved with the Greek community at all. Overall, it should not make or break your decision on coming to Madison because some people who think it is an essential part of their college experience don't end up joining, and some people who never thought that a sorority or fraternity would be a part of their college experience (me!) will end up loving it. While there is a lot of fun Greek events and lots of sororities and fraternities to join (and don't let the process of joining scare you away!), it is not essential to your college experience to join a sorority.
    Clubs and Activities

    I am involved in five clubs, and I absolutely love it! It gives you plenty of opportunities to volunteer, get to know people, feel like more of a part of the campus, and have a lot of fun! Homecoming is a big time for clubs, and it really is a great time! You will love any club you decide is right for you, and there is a big org fair at the beginning of the year to help you find the ones you like (and get a lot of free stuff too!).

    Many people think Madison is just a place for Liberals, don't let that stop you from coming here. I promise you both sides are represented. However, it is a very laid back community that is focused on academics, partying, football, community, Greek life, club activities, outdoors life, and what to do after getting your undergraduate degree. I honestly cannot name a specific group of people that would fit in here because I have friends here with so many different interests. UW Madison is really whatever you want to make it!

    JUMP AROUND!! If you've never heard it, go listen to the song Jump Around by House of Pain! When that song plays, the entire student section if not stadium starts jumping around during football games! It registers on the richter scale every time! It is so fun!

    People complain a lot about the price of Madison, but I honestly love this place and could not ask for anything better. A lot of the professors are research-based so they may not be the best professor in a large setting, but go to their office hours! They are extremely knowledgeable about the subject they are teaching and always willing to help you out! Also, the city you will live in is by far the best city around. You'll also be surprised by how much your unsegregated fees actually pay for, you're just responsible for taking advantage of those opportunities!
    What to do for fun

    When it is warm enough, get out on the lake! Rent a boat, go kayaking, go swimming, paddleboarding, anything! The lake is an awesome time! Also, head out to picnic point anytime you can! It is absolutely beautiful, and you will not regret the hike! Saturdays are Farmers' Market and Game days! Game days at Madison are the best days. Go to as many games as you can. I don't really care for football, and they're my favorite event too, so don't let that stop you from going! Also, if you join clubs and/or the Greek community, you will have socials to go to and lots of fun events planned for you. I am always busy, and I am always having fun!

    Gordon commons was just re-done, and it is really really nice now! It is awesome food, and the point system is awesome! Fresh Market is pretty much the only grocery store you do not need a car to get to, and it is overpriced, but it's also super convenient.
    Dorm Life

    Great way to meet people but unless you live in Ogg or Smith, the dorms are pretty terrible on one side of campus, and the dorms on the Lakeshore side although nicer are farther away from everyone else, just closer to most classes. I loved living in the dorms though. I will always miss that year.
    Academic Rigor

    It is pretty tough, but you can ALWAYS find someone to study with or someone else studying in College Library, even on Saturday night at midnight. Also, College Library is open 24 hours a day!
    Tips for prospective students

    You don't need to go Greek to have a good time on campus, but it is a good way to make friends quickly, and I recommend it especially for transfer students. Get involved! You'd be surprised how many people do more than just go to class. You will always be proud to have lived here, and you will never want to leave. Don't forget to go to the Farmers' Market on Saturdays!

    What to do for fun

    There are countless student activities going on all the time. We have a lot of fun, free events and because the school is located in the heart of Madison, there are a lot of other entertainment options. Also, we have great nature paths and are right on Lake Mendota.
    Food and Dining

    Campus food is pretty good but there are also and insane number of tasty restaurants located on State Street, just minutes from campus.
    Dorm Life

    Great environment with a lot of opportunities to get involved and meet new people. Most of the dorms are pretty nice and you have the option of living in a quiet, lake shore dorm or in a fast paced, Southeast dorm.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes can be very challenging but if you put in the time and effort, they are manageable.
    Tips for prospective students

    Make sure you GO TO CLASSES and attend office hours as soon as you feel confused about anything. Also, go to as many sporting events as possible and enjoy the school spirit!

    Having not attended the school yet I am not sure of the answer. I have had two cousins graduate from Madison with Masters degrees and they thought that the curriculum for engineering was tough but not ridiculous.

    The campus police are really cool guys who are clearly just trying to look out for the students and they do a very good job. Safety is great.

    There are hundreds of student organizations ranging from Geography Club, to sailing club, to club sports, to B.E.A.R (bracelet making club), to photography club, to cheese club. There's quite a bit to do. On top of the organizations, there's also an overwhelming amount of things to do through other sources.

    Truly there is niche for everybody. However, it does help to be somewhat outgoing. You need to be able to make yourself stand out as there are so many students. Also, you need to know what you want so that you can go and get it. There are no hand-outs here. It's not that it's not a friendly place, it's just that there is so much going on that if you don't assert yourself, it's hard to get any recognition. You should also have a deep appreciation for sports, traditions, and community if you go here. All three of these things play a big part into what makes our campus unique. If you are going to be a Badger, you need to love being a Badger.

    Jump Around at the football games after 3rd quarter is awesome!!! Also, giant snow ball fights on Bascom hill on snow days are super fun. There are many more but I don't want to spoil them for when you get to find them out for yourself (like what you do when you graduate!) As far as locations, I'm in love with the German beer cellar style area of our Memorial Union called the Rathskeller. I also adore the Lakeshore path that goes around Lake Mendota and Pick-nick point where it ends up. I'm also a fan of the Chazen Museum of Art. The top of Observatory hill near the stone bench by the observatory overlooking Lake Mendota is quite beautiful as well. Of course there is also Science Hall, with is old and historic and full of geographic wonderfullness that I also quite enjoy. The Wisconsin Institute for Discovery is pretty cool too. I'm just going to stop because it would seriously take forever for me to describe all my favorite locations on campus. Honestly, it is not hard at all to find are area to call your own; the campus has all manner of locations ranging from urban to rural.
    Bang for the buck

    Public ivy = state school price (which if you are from out of state can be pretty expensive depending on where you are from, but is really relatively low when compared to almost any private school) + world class education (Higgs bosson? yeah that was us. Stem cells? Yeah, that was us. Robinson Map Projection? [don't judge, I'm a geography major] Yeah, that was us. I could continue for quite a while...)
    What to do for fun

    Come on, it's Madison. Football games are the first that come to my mind, they're huge. Aside from that though, all of the sports are pretty darn fun to watch. Other than sports, we have movies on campus, theater, opera, concerts, live bands, a nature preserve, a lake, wind surfing, gyms, hundreds of student organizations, parties (it must and should be said!), art museums, and the list goes on. What to do for fun? Take your pick!
    Food and Dining

    For a state school, I was really impressed by the food. Dining services do a fantastic job with what they are given. The a-la carte cafeteria system works much better than a meal plan in my opinion as well. Also, if you don't want to eat a university affiliated venue, there is the wonderful State Street right on campus with a plethora of fantastic restaurants. There are also plenty of places to buy groceries if you just want to make your own food.
    Dorm Life

    Dorms are great, you meet a ton of people, but almost all upperclassmen (juniors and up) live off campus.
    Academic Rigor

    They don't take education lightly here. UW-Madison has a reputation to uphold and you will find that out quickly if you aren't prepared to work in your classes.
    Tips for prospective students

    Have an idea for what you want to do when you get to school; it's easy to get lost in the whirlwind of things to do. Also, don't be completely undecided about your major, that puts you at risk for getting behind. Be social!! Make friends not only with your peers (which is pretty easy to do) but also with your professors and TAs if you can.

    In spite of the fact that Madison is a larger city it has many programs to keep people safe. There are escort services for night-time walks from the library, and key card locks on all of the dorms. There are emergency call booths around campus with fast responses. In addition, city police are always present at bigger events such as Halloween and security in the dorms is increased.
    Greek Life

    There are many different Greek organizations present at UW-Madison. There are both social and professional groups. The professional groups are a great way to get to know the staff and create a life-long network within your discipline.
    Clubs and Activities

    Clubs and Activities at UW-Madison are truly fantastic and so I give them a 5/5. They have all sorts of activities for every type of person from cheese club to belly dance, from Russian club to gamer club and from volunteer clubs to inter-mural, club and varsity sports. They have a big event where hundreds of clubs have booths at the Kohl Center at the beginning of the year and it is very easy to get involved.

    UW-Madison is a great school for motivated and independent people. It is a school full of opportunities for those who are not afraid to seek them.

    There is a gigantic snowball fight in the middle of campus every year as soon as snow permits, and the bell tower has a concert everyday around 1pm and plays all sorts different songs.

    The university is large and therefore somewhat expensive, but there are almost limitless opportunities if you just seek them out. Whether its research, internships or co-ops with the university or local industries, or government involvement and volunteerism. In addition, the university provides health services, fitness services and many events that are paid for by tuition. All of these services are great to make having fun and staying healthy easy while you are at school.
    What to do for fun

    The downtown area is very fun. There are museums, theaters, and farmers markets. There are concerts for everyone from classical to pop and from local bands to big names. There are plenty of restaurants and shops downtown and a few big malls only a bus ride away. In addition there are sports year round including hockey, basketball and of course badger Football. Not to mention the gorgeous lakes and trails that surround the campus.
    Food and Dining

    The food is very affordable the dining halls for dorm residents, but expensive for non-dorm residents. There are many campus-run cafes and restaurants all around campus that are great for lunch and for the most part affordable. The food has a good mix of healthy and unhealthy options. Most of the dairy products are made on campus and the ice cream is excellent. There are many different options from many corners of the world off campus as well. Over all the food is great if you know where to look this is why the Food at UW-Madison receives a 3/5.
    Dorm Life

    There are many different options for housing at UW-Madison. They have quiet and loud neighborhoods and different levels of amenities. The cheapest rooms are still expensive and the dorms are cramped, but the experience is valuable. Having a community to come home to and an older House Fellow to advise you and help you adjust are very important. This is why I give dorm life a 4/5.
    Academic Rigor

    The University of Wisconsin-Madison is academically very strong. There are easier classes, but there are honors programs and classes to really stretch your abilities. There are entry level classes to get you up to speed in weaker areas and plenty of ways to earn credit for things you already know. In addition there are many different options for any remaining general credits. The higher level classes are challenging but very rewarding so I give Madison a 4/5.
    Tips for prospective students

    The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a very large university, but it can be made much smaller by seeking organizations that speak to you. Living the dorms may be cramped and a little crazy, but the activities put on by the hall and the resident adviser (House Fellow) that lives on your floor can really help you adjust to the city and college life in general. UW-Madison is a great choice for school it is strong both academically and socially.

    I am a part of a sorority and absolutely love it. Although it is not as big as schools in the south, we still uphold traditions and have socials and formals. I have met very good friends through my time in my sorority.

    There is a club for almost everybody and you can start up your own club with just three more people if you can't find what you're looking for!

    If you join a sorority or fraternity you have to opportunity to attend socials and formals which can add spice to your weekend. In the fall, Badger football season tickets are hot items and the games can be some of the best memories of your life. You can stroll down State St. and, when you are of age, enjoy the bars lining it. There is so much fun packed into one city in Madison.

    The ice cream is made directly on campus and so is the milk so all the dairy is fresh, fresh, fresh! There is a plethora of choices for you to choose for your meal, from burgers to tacos to omelets to Asian cuisine.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life is one of the best things I have every experienced. I have met great friends and have had plenty of fun times in the dorms. It is a great way to meet people.
    Academic Rigor

    The academics are tough, but A's are completely reachable. Studying is a must!
    Tips for prospective students

    My tip to prospective students is to study hard and study strong now in high school. If you do not learn to work hard in high school, you will not fair well in college. The rigorousness of some classes may take you as a surprise if you do not come prepared.

    Greek life is small in comparison to the students on campus but it feels huge once you are involved. The Greek life feels like a huge extended family and is a great opportunity on many levels.

    Very expensive for out of state students, and they rarely give financial aid/scholarships to OOS students but I would argue its completely worth it for the well-respected education you will receive.
    Food and Dining

    So many good & quick food places around state street. Noodles, Cosi, and of course Ian's Pizza. Also the dorm food isnt that bad! They have so many choices and a fresh fruit bar; Its hard to get bored with the options.
    Dorm Life

    In the dorms, you will find some of your best friends for life. In the southeast campus dorms (Witte, Sellery, etc.) almost everyone has their doors open 24/7 and it is very easy to make friends. Lakeshore dorms is a bit more quiet, perfect for studying and a bit far away from main campus. However, it is just as easy to meet people, just make sure you work a bit harder at it!
    Academic Rigor

    Students are able to find the easiest general education classes to take but plenty of these requirements challenge you. While taking an fairly easy (grade-wise) writing class, I definitely see my writing improving. For other larger classes, however, C is the average. It all depends on which classes you take and how hard you want to work.
    Tips for prospective students

    In your application, explain something interesting and different about yourself to make you stand out! Also if you get deferred, don't give up hope! I was deferred and later accepted a few months later!

    UW - Madison is academically challenging while still having an exciting campus. This is one of the most prestigious of the BIG 10 schools as well. Basically, at UW - Madison you will get a well-respected education for the future with plenty of fun stories to tell your friends as the years go by.

    The whole time I've been going to this campus I have never once felt endangered even though I come from a small town and this is a big city. If you do however there are programs like safe walk where a boy and a girl will walk you from wherever you are to your home to ensure you make it there safely.

    State Street is my favorite location in Madison. It was about a 5 minute walk from my dorm and it leads directly to the capital building. Not only is it extremely beautiful, but it also holds many cool events and is full of restaurants and stores.

    I would say overall while comparing it to my other friends' experiences at other schools, mine was far superior to theirs. Madison has so much to offer no matter what type or person you are.
    What to do for fun

    For fun I hung out with my new friends. We explored the town. There is never nothing to do on State Street. There are endless shops there with everything you could think of. Another fun aspect of UW Madison is the atmosphere during game days. Coming from a school who's football team hardly ever won a game put me in complete awe of the amount of spirit this school brings to the table. If you don't wear red on game day you will stick out from the crowd.
    Food and Dining

    The food is really good, but being a vegetarian I felt I was eating a lot of the same foods. I eventually started cooking my own food in the kitchen in the downstairs of my dorm building.
    Dorm Life

    This was one of my favorite parts of attending UW Madison. You'e surrounded by tons of new people so making friends is extremely easy. However if you're looking for a more quiet laid back experience I would suggest living in the Lakeshore dorms versus the ones in Southeast.
    Academic Rigor

    You definitely have to try to succeed but the teachers always are able to see you for help during office hours to discuss curriculum and grades.
    Tips for prospective students

    I would suggest making study groups with the people in your classes because chances are one of them will understand something you're learning that you don't and vis-versa.

    I went into this school not knowing much about it besides it was more challenging to get into than most other schools I had looked at. I recommended UW Madison to all of my friends applying this year because not only does it have superb academics with amazing teachers, but the students there are far superior to those I've met from my other friends' universities. Madison is always welcoming and it's very easy to network and succeed with the support system you create.

    The number one rule about Madison is USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM, especially on the weekends! I cannot stress enough how important it is to have someone else aware of where you are. For me, I have walked plenty of places by myself at night and have never felt threatened or in danger. You just have to be smart about it.

    Not many students choose Greek Life in Madison; it comes out to roughly 10%. But there are plenty of fraternities and sororities to pick from, let's make that clear.

    As I said before, there are over 800 to choose from. Pretty awesome if I do say so myself!

    UW Madison is a place where the hustle and bustle never stops. There are always things happening, you just need to know where to look. Also on the weekends, it can get pretty crazy. So make sure to utilize the buddy system.

    One unusual tradition that I will do in a couple of years is kissing Abe's foot for completing my undergrad degree.

    This school is for sure an expensive college for me, but it also offers a lot of different scholarship opportunities. Another cool thing is finding coupons online, or just being smart about which grocery stores you shop at.
    What to do for fun

    Where do I begin? Let's start off with Madison's 800+ student orgs and activities. Plus State Street. Plus sports games, ice skating, working out, trying our restaurants, sleeping, intramural sports, walking along Lakeshore path, swimming, playing catch or frisbee outside on the grass. The list really is endless.
    Food and Dining

    It is affordable because of living in the dorms, and it is usually close by to wherever you are. There are lots of little cafes and eateries scattered around campus, so you basically have your pick. And I cannot forget to mention State Street has a PLETHORA of dining options.
    Dorm Life

    I live in a dorm with around 80 people, 3 floors, 2 boys and 1 girl. I definitely like how close-knit it has become with some of the people. And others I never even see or knew they lived in my dorm! It does get loud at times, but hey, everybody is here to have a good time. There are TONS of places to study if you just can't focus in the dorm.
    Academic Rigor

    This school is definitely tough and very competitive. Be sure to do your homework regularly; find people in your lectures or discussions to study with. It doesn't matter if high school was easy for you, it was pretty much easy for everyone who attends here.
    Tips for prospective students

    Keep up with the foot traffic; don't be that one person that slows everybody down. UW Mad is a fast-paced campus. Be sure to research possible career paths early. I know everybody says this, but they say it because it is TRUE!!

    I love how big of a campus Madison is, and all of the people that I get to meet/work with everyday. Madison has some of the best school spirit, included when I attend football, hockey, basketball, volleyball games or other sporting events. I really like the diversity of the classes too.

    The dining halls are nice because you do not need a meal plan, you just pay for what you want which is nice because you are not obligated to get food that you will not eat. The food can be monotonous, but it is still good.

    Academically, classes are interesting and fun, but you need to study and work hard to get an A. Spending the time, working hard will really pay off in the end and you will appreciate it.

    It's a ranked one of the top schools in the world on several lists, and comes at a fairly cheap price, especially if you're a Wisconsin resident!
    What to do for fun

    Sports are a big part of this campus. The football games are something that you will not find on any other campus. Drinking and night life is also a huge part of this campus, but not the only thing. Arts and theater is also something commonly found on campus or just down towards the capitol.

    You get a certain about of free cab rides at night and there is a safe walk program. If you utilize it or walk home in groups you shouldn't have trouble. There are also some emergency buttons around campus. Just don't walk the lake shore path alone at night.
    Greek Life

    I don't know much about it but there are a lot of houses to choose from and they are very active in philanthropy.
    Clubs and Activities

    There is a club for everything! There is an outing club that goes on backpacking and climbing and boating trips together. There is a club for just about any profession or hobby and you can start your own if there isn't one.

    If you are politically liberal you will definitely find a lot of friends here and a lot of causes to get involved in. You will likely be very happy at Madison. If you are not, however, you will be very unhappy.

    We have our own ice cream that is delicious and that you can buy at the union. Everyone is really into the UW band, which is really good and makes games extra fun. They do a fifth quarter after every football game where they play pep-band songs and everyone dances.

    Well it is like any college. Unless you get a really specific degree or know where you are going career wise it really doesn't get you anywhere.
    What to do for fun

    Well there is always sports. Also, the union is always showing movies for free and inviting interesting speakers. Billy Collins did a poetry reading. I also heard some big hollywood producer speak. There are also many plays and other performances to be seen at the union theaters or at the Overture Center. We also have a comedy club and an awesome art museum. Not to mention the lake. So many boating activities.

    The dorm food is pretty darn good and you can get any type of cuisine you want. You can also find any type of food at the numerous restaurants on State Street and all over campus.

    If you like to party the southeast dorms are great for that. You can definitely make a lot of friends on you floor. I think that the dorms by the lake are a little more laid back and the views are gorgeous. There are always groups getting together to grill or play volleyball outside and to go out to the games or parties.

    From what I hear and have experienced, UW-Madison is just as vigorous as any ivy league school.

    Join a lot of different clubs, especially ones related to your planned career.

    In-state tuition is reasonable. Madison is definitely the highest rated university in the Wisconsin state system.

    The student unions and nearby music venues are always hosting great events. There's always something for everyone, whether it be a guest visit from the Dali Lama, or an Avicii concert!

    Dining hall food is pretty good. There is a lot of variety and food prices are reasonable for students.

    Dorms are centrally located and there is convenient access to everything you need- cafeterias, laundry rooms, kitchens, etc.

    The campus is extremely safe, and the university actually has volunteers that will walk other students home if they feel uncomfortable going alone.

    The Greek life at Madison is unmatched, and getting involved is really easy. My advice is to try out as many frats/sororities as possible during rush week.

    There are a bunch of clubs and activities offered throughout campus, and you can be as involved as you'd like. I highly recommend the Cheese Club, where you spend every other Wednesday night eating as much cheese as you'd like.

    Try to avoid the dining halls as much as you can. The food is pretty inexpensive, but there's a reason for that. Also, never get sushi from the dining halls. It just ends badly.

    If you're a Freshmen wondering where to live, I'd highly suggest looking at the dorms. You meet a ton of new people and it's really easy to make new friends. If you want a rowdier, more hectic environment, look at the Southeast dorms (Witte (where I live(d)), Sellery, and Ogg). If you want a quieter home where it's easy to study and get assignments done, try the Lakeshore dorms (Liz Waters, Tripp, Adams, etc.).
    Academic Rigor

    The academic rigor is really up to you. While most of the classes are challenging, there are some that are much easier than others. Look up your professors before enrolling for classes. It will help you tremendously!
    Tips for prospective students

    1.) Get involved in as many extracurricular activities as possible. I know that it sounds cliche, but UW-Madison offers so many opportunities to get involved, and you can join as many or as few as you'd like. 2.) Keep up the classwork. It's really easy to take a week off and not do any work, but it comes back to bite you in the end. There's a lot of distractions on campus, so try to find the balance between work and play. 3.) Be open to everything. Living in the dorms will open you up to all sorts of new people and perspectives. Be open-minded and try new things.

    The University of Wisconsin was the perfect choice for me and I would highly recommend it to prospective students. It's a great academic environment, yet it allows you to have a ton of social opportunities. The professors are highly qualified and the classes are challenging, but worth it.

    For being in a city? This school aims to make you feel safe. Late night free buses and free cab rides and plenty of well lit pathways make Madison one of the lowest crime rated cities in the nation.

    Wisconsin has a lot of greek life on campus. The people involved are very passionate about their Fraternity or Sorority. If Going Greek is for you, join!

    Madison is one of the most safe, gorgeous places out there. It is worth it to go into debt to attend college here at Madison. Madison is made to equip you for a job that will help you pay back your debt. If you like Madison and it feels like home, there should not be anything stopping you from going here except for yourself and your circumstances. But even someone in dire need can make it here. Madison teaches you to believe in yourself, from whatever walk of life you are. If you have a dream, go for it! It is hard yet rewarding to accomplish a huge task like going to college.
    What to do for fun

    Everything. Madison is a city. It's located not to far from the country, but it is also a downtown. a 5 minutes walk from downtown feels like a suburb. Going swimming in Lake Mendota or taking nature walks in the Arboreteum are beautiful. If you are more into night life, there is plenty in Madison. From fraternity's to Camp Randall games to Halloween, and so much more...Madison will not disappoint you.

    The food on state street is great, and there are grocery stores around. Dining hall food is very good.

    Live on lakeshore for a view of the lake. They always say it's the cheapest housing on a lake you will ever find. Living in Witte or Selery can sometimes be overwhelming if you need more space though, because there are a lot of people in a few buildings.

    If you want a College that is challenging, come to Madison. Madison is one of the top Universities in the World. But, if you want a college that is amazing, fulfilling, and rewarding, still come to Madison.
