Great for these types of students

UWM is great for students who want to save money - if you live in the Greater Milwaukee area. It is also a great place for students who enjoy diversity. The lake and parks aren't far at all from campus, so if you enjoy being outdoors UWM is a great place to find it - even within the city!

    Tips for prospective students

Take a tour of the campus. See if it is the right size for you. Don't only tour the campus, but have a look at the surrounding areas. You won't spend all of your time on campus, so make sure that there are enough activities for you to do that you'll enjoy. Think about living in the city and see if it's right for you. City-living isn't cut out for everyone. Also check into the commuter life, see if it's for you. Compare prices for driving, taking the bus or living on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Any school will be more than most can afford, but compared to other schools the tuition is reasonable for me. The education you receive here is definitely worth the money.

    Am enjoying being here

I am definitely enjoying myself at UWM. The campus is the perfect size for me - lots of people on a smaller campus. There's always something to do whether it be hanging out with friends at the Union Grind or exploring the streets of Milwaukee. I think it's great that it is a commuter school - those who choose to live at home are given the option and not required to live in the dorms.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much so far at UWM. My art classes are fantastic! The instructors are very knowledgeable in their fields, and push creativity and new thoughts into my head effortlessly. I can't wait to go back!

Great for these types of students

This college is great if you are unsure of what you want to major in. They offer an Ed Psych course that runs once a week and it's purpose is to help you select a major. It's great for someone who likes the city and isn't freaked out by crowds of people. It's also decent for commuters.

    Tips for prospective students

-Do not put off orientation until the last minute. It's when you schedule your classes and you do not want to get stuck with the last picks. -Always rent your course books when you have the option. -Don't get caught up in the fun. Professors don't care if you don't do your homework, but it seriously hurts your grade. You need at least a C to pass a class here, so don't slack off. -Show up to class. Seriously, you will be so lost if you don't. This isn't high school where you get the homework the next day. And make sure you show up ON TIME. Some of my professors will count tardies as absences. If you have too many absences, it will knock points off your grades. -Sit in the first few rows of the lecture hall. It sounds dorky, but it helps you pay attention. -Actually pay attention in your lectures. Some of your professors will not be from America, meaning they have thick accents. If you don't pay attention, you will get lost. -Take good notes. -Join student organizations. -Don't write people off before you get to know them.

    Bang for the buck

I am only paying the tuition rate, which is somewhere around $8,000. When you pay your student fee, which I think is $200, you get a UPASS. This allows Milwaukee students to ride the buses for free anywhere in Milwaukee, even during Summerfest. We also get free concerts at the end of the week (Pantherfest) which is pretty cool.

    Am enjoying being here

I am a commuter student, which kind of sucks. It's not so much that I don't live on campus, but more of the fact that I get stuck in the rush hours. However, I was really nervous about commuting because I didn't think I was going to meet anyone or make friends, but I was wrong. You have a lot of opportunities to meet people, all you have to do is talk to them. There is almost always something going on on-campus. There are a TON of student organizations you can join, which I highly recommend. I personally really enjoy the campus because it's so different than my high school. There are so many different people here to meet and it's not cliquish at all.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently enrolled in the College of L&S, so all my classes are breadth requirement courses. I am, however, enjoying every single one of them. All of my professors definitely keep you engaged in the lecture, which is important in a lecture hall of 200+ students. They also genuinely want to see you succeed.

Great for these types of students

UWM is amazing, small campus but a BIG heart. Many students, small campus because we build up, not out. You don't have to walk for 20 min. to get to your next class. When you class is all the way across campus, it shouldn't take more than 10-15 min to get there. We are very artsy despite the fact that we are not an art school. We do have a division for those interested in arts (Peck School of the Arts). We literally have something for everyone! Come check out campus and some of our events! You'll fall in love, I did! Also try to shadow a student before applying, you won't regret it!

    Tips for prospective students

My tips would be to apply for as many scholarships as possible no matter how much they are worth, every little bit helps trust me!! Also apply for FAFSA asap!! Even when you are in school and you got your loans and whatnot. DON'T STOP applying for scholarships. It will help out in the long run.

    Bang for the buck

UWM is WAAAAAAY cheaper than other surrounding Universities. Cheap and beautiful! The campus is gorgeous! We have a water fountain running all summer. Well thought out and stylish buildings. We have various free events throughout the year. I definitely am happy I chose to go here!

    Am enjoying being here

There is sooo much to do on campus and surrounding campus. -The union - theres a theatre that plays discount movies - at least 20 activities per week - the adventure center. You can go on trips such as horse back riding, kayaking, fright fest, wall climbing and soo much more! - The arts and crafts centre has soo many cheap and some free workshops such as henna tattooing, shirt tiedying, open clay. Get a free membership and use their sewing machine and anything and everything in the entire center. - Two restaurants inside the union the Kenwood inn and the Gasthaus. Great food with games and more. - Free concerts and bowling in the union bowling alley - The klosche center get your work out on!! Huge basketball court and track in on the upper level surrounding the bball court. Various types of machines. Cardio and training rooms, Its huge!! - Our MANY organizations such as sports, sororities, fraternities, Habitat for humanities and MANY other volunteer opportunities. - Restaurants inside the union. (BK, Taco Bell, various sandwich shoppes, ice cream, Starbucks and the 8Th note Coffee house and more. - Surrounding restaurants (Noodles, Jimmy Johns and more)

    Am learning a lot

I love ALL of my classes. The teachers are very knowledgable. The best part is that if you are having trouble in your classes. We have free tutoring in the library! Also we have SI's (Supplemental Instruction students) They sit in your classes with you, they already know the material, so when you ask them a question, they reply with a brilliant answer. They can go as in depth as you want and they are free too. I find the harder classes easier to bear with their help. They have hours at least 4 times a week. They are amazing!

Great for these types of students

Great for outgoing students looking for many social and extra curricular opportunities. Honors college helps students stay on track and maintain outstanding grades. Also great for students looking to be close to the city which provides many opportunities for jobs and entertainment.

    Tips for prospective students

Many opportunities to get involved with extra-curricular activities; sports, clubs, volunteer opportunities and honors college. Many options for housing including triple, double and single rooms. Apartments also available through university housing. Dorms are set up in a suite style, providing a lot of privacy. Every two floors share a common area including couches, flat screen television and microwave.

    Bang for the buck

Reasonably priced for an in-state school. Many perks included in the price for schooling. Students receive internet and cable within the dorms as well as a Milwaukee bus pass and Klotsche Center gym membership. Scholarships are offered for outstanding grades and many are offered through the Honors College.

    Am enjoying being here

Milwaukee has a large student population, but a reasonably small campus located in a safe community. Students receive a free bus pass that can easily take students around the Milwaukee area. Campus offers endless opportunities for things to do. The union provides a recreation center including a table tennis room, pool tables, video games and a bowling alley. The union provides a volunteer center, a cafeteria, fast food restaurants, two coffee shops, an emporium and an arts and crafts center. The library provides a comfortable place to study. There are two restaurants, one in the union and one in the Sandburg dorm area. There are also two laundry rooms in the Sandburg dorm area. Students also receive a gym membership to the Klotsche Center and the gym within the Sandburg dorm area.

    Am learning a lot

There are a wide variety of classes offered and a huge list of majors to choose from. I am currently undecided, but creating a diverse schedule is helping me explore my options and decide what I would like to pursue. Advisers and counselors are very helpful and always willing to help make decisions about schedules and classes.

Great for these types of students

Students who like an urban setting will love the campus, as it is near many different places. Campus is only a few blocks from several different restaurants. A few blocks away is the lake, as well as a few parks and beaches.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for as many scholarships as possible for school. Whether it is $100, or $1000, every little bit helps. Also, be sure to get your information and everything sent in by the deadlines so that you are not feeling like you are behind everyone else.

    Bang for the buck

UWM is cheaper than most schools. It is very affordable, especially those that have a limited source of income.

    Am enjoying being here

It is okay. The campus is not too overwhelming for a first year student switching school settings, from smaller to larger. My classes are interesting, and the professors seem to be very knowledgeable about the subjects they teach. There is lots to do on campus each day, with events being held constantly every day, every week. Off campus in the nearby neighborhoods there is also much to do and see. Being a commuter student is a bit tougher, as you will spend time going back and forth between campus, and will also not be able to do much activities when you are not there.

    Am learning a lot

Some of the classes are very fast paced and the information is pounded in your head. Professor to student interaction is limited with larger class sizes. Smaller classes, discussions, and labs are much more beneficial and more conducive to learning.

Great for these types of students

If you like smaller campuses you'll enjoy it here, it's only 3 blocks. The library is right in the middle and it is pretty easy to make it to all classes (even if they are on opposite sides of campus) within 10 minutes.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out the campus to make sure it is a good fit for you and research possible majors to see if there are programs here and if they are good ones.

    Bang for the buck

As far as tuition goes, I'd rather not pay 16-17 thousand a year when I could be going to Madison for roughly the same cost :/

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus and most everyone is friendly and helpful.

    Am learning a lot

If you manage to get to all of your classes you can really learn a lot about each subject. The benefit of making it to each class is when studying for finals, it will be a lot easier than trying to learn everything last minute.

    Campus Safety

the campus itself is pretty safe. we also have safe walk people who will walk you home at night.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

we have a great planetarium that does really cheap shows!

    Bang for the buck

so far i am really happy with the education i have received at this school for the price.

    What to do for fun

milwaukee is an awesome city, and the campus is set in the perfect setting, lots of great food places, shopping, and malls within walking/driving distance.

    Food and Dining

awesome food court in the union! can't beat the selection/prices at any other university.

    Dorm Life

i can't say. i live in an apartment, but all my friends said the dorms weren't so bad. they are ridiculously expensive, so plan on getting out of them as early as you can. apartments in the area are way cheaper.

    Academic Rigor

some of the professors are really strict but they are all nice. be prepared to work hard while having fun.

    Tips for prospective students

apply early. admissions department is really slow. make sure to call and check on your application status! if there is something wrong with your application it will not get processed and they will not call you to tell you.

    In three sentences

great class sizes. helpful teaching assistants and professors. wonderful campus; not too small, not too big.

    wisconsin people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Almost everyone here is from Wisconsin. Not many out of state people.

    Bang for the buck

    you get screwed over.

    What to do for fun

drink and go into the city but the city is not that exciting. Nothing compared to Chicago.

    Food and Dining

Cafeteria has very limited hours which aren't convenient at all. plus the food is not good and you have very limited options.

    Dorm Life

The elevators are super loud and it sounds like something is running into the building. Unless you are in Sandburg the other dorms are far away from campus and you have to take a shuttle everyday. You are in towers which are about 25 floors high on average. Which sucks because the elevators are almost always broken.

    Academic Rigor

the classes are nice. but some of them are too big.

    Tips for prospective students

    Do not come here.

    In three sentences

The location of this school is very nice. but that is pretty much all I enjoy about it. I don't like the people and the athletics here are horrible.

Great for these types of students

UWM is a great place for students who like living in an urban setting. The city of Milwaukee offers many sports activities and cultural events to attend. It is also a great place for students on a limited budget since the tuition is reasonable. Finally, it is just large enough but not an overwhelming campus.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest that anyone looking to pursue a dance degree should take dance classes from a local studio for a few years before attending the required audition. It was very obvious that the professors conducting the audition were looking for prospective students with previous dance training. Scholarships were awarded at the first three auditions held in October, February, and April. The last audition was held in June and students were still admitted to the program but scholarship money had already been used up.

    Bang for the buck

I feel that I am receiving an excellent education for the tuition being charged. Since it is a state college, I know that the tuition is kept as low as possible so students can afford to attend.

    Am enjoying being here

The high school I attended was typical in that it had the usual groups you would expect to find in a high school setting. What I enjoy about UWM is that everyone in the dance program is caring and supportive of each other. This past semester I made more friends and had more positive experiences than in my whole high school experience. We encourage each other and are happy for one another when performance opportunities arise for anyone in the program.

    Am learning a lot

I am a freshman at UWM and am majoring in Dance. I can't believe how much I have learned in such a short time from my teachers! All of my dance teachers are well trained and have very impressive performing careers. I have found them to be extremely approachable and friendly. My teachers are not only concerned about how I am doing in their class, but also how my transition into college is going.

Great for these types of students

Great for anyone interested in a large student body but in a more compact campus. Also, if you like to explore your surroundings, Milwaukee has a lot to offer and your student ID gets you free bus service too...great for us money-strapped college students!

    Tips for prospective students

You definitely must visit the campus before making your decision. Ask a lot of questions, and talk to current students and advisers to make sure that UWM is for you!

    Bang for the buck

I think UW-Milwaukee is priced fairly for the quality of education you receive. My only complaint is that they do not seem to offer as many scholarship opportunities as other schools I considered...however, I did receive one scholarship from the school.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love UW-Milwaukee! It has everything I wanted in a college...lots of students, which means lots of opportunities to make new friends, a wide variety of degrees to choose from including the arts, and great instructors and advisers. Oh, and I almost forgot, lots of things to do on campus and the surrounding area!

    Am learning a lot

The UW-Milwaukee campus offers a lot of opportunities for learning...take advantage of everything the campus offers and you won't regret it!

Any kind. UWM has a very diverse group of students.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class or else you will be lost. Also live in the dorms as a freshman. It is a great way to meet people and there is always something going on.

    Bang for the buck

I am out of state so I am paying a lot to go here. I'd say I could probably do better for what I am paying but for in state students, it is a great deal.

    Am enjoying being here

They try to have a lot of activities around campus but if its after 7 and your hungry, you might have a hard time finding food on campus.

    Am learning a lot

Freshman classes are very easy like they should be. It is an easy transition from high school to college. It is a big campus and there are a lot of people but class sizes are mostly small.

Great for these types of students

This college is great for students who enjoy diverse cultures and the outdoor.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice to the future students of UW-Milwaukee is that you should be prepared before you attend the school. It's better if you join clubs because you'd make a load of friends. Also, you could set up a tour and come visit the campus before you make your final decision.

    Bang for the buck

Well as far as the tuition goes, it is a bit high but if you apply for financial aid and is qualified, you'd be just fine. Also, I believe the education is well worth your time and money.

    Am enjoying being here

Attending UW-Milwaukee was a great college choice for me. I enjoy the courses presented in this school. What I had noticed about this college is that the students that attend here are really friendly. Also, the counselors are really helpful in answering your questions, helping you pick classes for your intended major and so much more.

    Am learning a lot

My first year at UW-Milwaukee was well spent. To my surprise I am actually learning a lot from the courses I had took. In my view, I believe that the English classes have great professors because it is very easy to understand the course although it may be a challenge in other ways.

    What to do for fun

we are very close to the lake, so in the summer that is always fun. bayshore is just a few miles away and that's always fun. the union has bowling and pool and many more activities. also, hanging with your friends in the dorms watching a movie in flicks is always fun too!

    Food and Dining

food around campus is good. the food in the dorms, however, can be better. you do get sick of the food and it's the same every week. the fruit is fresh, but the salads never green. also, about 3 other people and i got food poisoning from the pizza puffs in the sandburg cafe and spent hours in norris throwing up.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is fun but very strict. my roommate and i had friends come visit for my birthday and getting guests in, is a pain in the butt. the security is rude to my parents, who can be a little slow at times, and now my parents hate coming to see me.

    Academic Rigor

through out high school, everyone told me that college was much harder? were they right? of course! but of course college is harder. however, the professers here teach in a very complex way and i love it. they don't teach slower, but it seems like it. their way of teaching is telling you the important stuff that you need to know but leaving that stuff you want to know out. this way, you go read the required book and find out everything. i learn a lot better this way and i'm getting better grades that i figured.

    Tips for prospective students

new students, coming into school, i wish i had this advice. don't buy the books until you realize you actually need them. use all of your effort in every class and make sure you get enough sleep. falling asleep in class is not fun, it's embarassing and you don't learn anything.

    In three sentences

i absolutely love the campus and the people around here. the classes are big yet you are always able to talk with you professors if needed. every ta i've had has been very helpful and outgoing and helped me through the class.

    Campus Safety

the campus is surrounded by security, and by this i mean we have emergency blue lights all around campus where students can press the button and college police will be there within minutes. late at night if a student is to walk home from the library the school offer's safe walkers, which are individuals working for the campus police to walk you home, or the school also offer's boss drivers which is a be on the safe side program, and this is free of charge for uwm students, they simply call boss and they will come and pick you up and take you to your desired location. a student like myself, there has never been a moment where i did not feel safe.

    Greek Life

uwm doesn't have much of a greek life, but the greek life that they do have is very active in the community, and working to make more valuable citizens of society.

there is a wide range of student organizations, going from a harry potter club, to sports literature. the school offers many organizations for the point of getting students involved, with over 700 clubs and organizations there is one that fits each student.

Great for these types of students

university of wisconsin-milwaukee has a population of 34,000 students, and within the student body is a wide range of diversity. we value the different cultures of uwm, and celebrate what each individual has to offer.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

something unusual about uwm, that also makes it unique is the campus holds a few small museums. in the art's building throughout the building there are small art exhibits open for anyone to see. and then in the library on the top floor there is a history museum, which is also open for students to go and study. it gives the campus uniqueness that other colleges don't have.

    Bang for the buck

on campus if you want a meal to really fill you up, and with great taste that is on a college student's budget, there is a restaurant called ma fisher's. this restaurant has a large menu with many different options ranging from breakfast to dinner, and the restaurant is opened 24 hours. this is a great place for students to catch up, get something to eat, and still be on a budget.

    What to do for fun

for fun at uwm they campus holds a union, where there is a bowling alley, a ping pong room, pool room, a restaurant, and movies offered. these are just a few things offered at the university of wisconsin-milwaukee. outside of campus you have the whole city of milwaukee, with many malls, museums, zoo's, parks, and just 5 minutes away from campus you have the beautiful lake front of lake michigan.

    Food and Dining

the cafeteria food very diverse. around holidays the dining hall plans specific nights to have a themed food, like thanksgiving dinner, or mardi gras night, chinese night, etc. and then they include a grill, a deli, fresh food and salad bar, pasta entrees, and then a create you own of something, like your own pizza, grilled cheese, etc. the dining hall gives many options of food, which is all included in the students meal plan.

    Dorm Life

it's a dorm, it's not home living. but the dorms here are better than most colleges. you have two cafeterias, fitness center, laundry room, coffee shop and a convenience store all located in the resident halls, and on top of all that you are surrounded with a large group of uwm students, so there is never a dull moment.

    Academic Rigor

the courses are hard, this is college, but they are achievable, and uwm offers many tutor programs all helping students to get that a in the class.

    Tips for prospective students

for prospective students, i believe this is great school to get the college campus, and the dorms are actually nicer than other colleges. you share a bathroom with only three to four other people instead of the whole floor. and literally everything you need is within walking distance or a short bus ride.

    In three sentences

university of wisconsin-milwaukee is enriched with much diversity, and really gives the college experience. with a small college campus you feel like you can really get to know students, but yet there is still many opportunities to succeed surrounding you. if i were to rate uwm, i would give in a 8.

you always see police roaming around campus. there are also safe walkers for the later nights as well as buses and boss to take you around campus.

    Food and Dining

the food isn't all that good, but easy and convenient for a fast-paced college student.

    Academic Rigor

    What to do for fun

the bayshore mall is just a short bus ride away, so my friends and i will go adventure there sometimes. uwm also plans fun events for people to go to. there are also highly rated movies every weekend in flicks.

    Food and Dining

i'm not too thrilled with the food because of the weighing system. everything besides the main dishes are priced based off of its weight, so fruit can be more expensive. they do add new meals to the menu so they don't serve the same meals every week which is something that i like.

    Dorm Life

i love living in the dorms because you get to meet so many people. the lounge that is shared by two floors allows people to hang out, do homework, and meet new people. i hang out with friends every day and always see new people to meet. living in the dorms is also beneficial because you can wake up and walk to class within 10-15 minutes.

    Academic Rigor

the academic rigor depends on what classes you take. for instance, i took math 105 the first semester which was a lot of work, and second semester i found that math 211 wasn't as demanding. also, if a class is interesting to you, you might find it to be easier for you to understand and you might not view the homework as work.

    Campus Safety

Campus is a very safe place. I've never had any incidences where I felt unsafe, but was notified by email about incidences on or around campus. There is campus security, safe rides home, and stationed safe boxes with a button activated alarm.

    Greek Life

No comment. There are sororities and fraternities, but I never looked into them

    Clubs and Activities

Many to choose from and participate in. There is something for everyone!

Great for these types of students

Any types of students, but particularly great for students who are also parents. There are many classes that are offered day, night, and some weekend to accommodate the diverse number of students.

The 8th note coffee house is located right in the middle of the union, run by students of the Union Activities Board. They offer a great place to sit and drink some of the best/cheapest coffee, tea, and cappuccinos on campus. There are tons of awesome people to meet and there is always a concert or poetry reading scheduled. Everyday there is a chance to get free coffee or tea if you know the obscure posted quote.

    Bang for the buck

While the cost of tuition is rising everywhere, you still get a great education and college experience for the cost.

    What to do for fun

There are many sports and rec classes that have on and off campus activities, clubs, and concerts to see. The campus has guest speakers, film festivals, and art exhibits. If you can't find something fun, you are not looking.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is good and bad. There are many healthy options, lots of variety, and many fast food options as well. There is something for everyone, and blocks away from restraunts if you don't like what is on campus.

    Dorm Life

I never personally lived in the dorms but I've visited friends there. The rooms were typical dorm rooms and the buildings are located right next to the klotcke center (gym/health/fitness). They are also located right on many major bus routes so it is easy to get anywhere in the city without a car.

    Academic Rigor

All classes I've taken at UW Milwaukee challenge you academically, but it is not so intense that you spend all of your free time studying. The overall class grades follow your typical bell curve, and many times there will be a slight curve to your final grade.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a tour and see what clubs are available to get involved in. It is a great way to meet people and foster relationships. There truly is a club for everyone and in the rare occasion you can't find one that fits your interests, you can apply to create one!

    In three sentences

UW Milwaukee is a great school to attend with a great variety of classes, clubs, sports, and activities. Located on the east side of Milwaukee you have all the benefits the city has to offer, which are many! It is also a great school to get involved in any number of research projects that are ongoing.

    Food and Dining

There isn't a wide selection of food in the off campus dorms. The food offered on campus/off campus dorms is nothing special or unique. Off campus restaurants, however, display a large variety of foods. There are expensive places, cheap, diverse, simple, and anything and everything else you can imagine.

    Dorm Life

I live in a dorm off campus and take the shuttle to class everyday. The dorms are a great way to meet new people and a great way to learn to compromise (such as living with a random roommate). There is security 24/7 and facilities almost around every corner. The dorms are extremely nice because every suite/room has their own bathroom.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee offers a top level education for a VERY reasonable price. The interrelatedness of the University and the Milwaukee area allow for students to really pursue their goals beyond the classroom and experience life without the University's reputation creating precocieved idea of the student's abilities. There is so much on offer, students, staf and faculty are really friendly and always willing to help. Overall, I am very pleased with this university and what it has to offer (I say this having turned down offers from universities such as the University of York, in England, noted in the top 5 for History in the UK, and the University of Sheffield, number 3 in the UK for Archaeology - after Oxford and Cambridge)

    What to do for fun

There is lots to do for fun. There are many, many campus organisations, clubs, and groups. Departments offer lecture series and Offices and student unions offer exciting and enlightening social events (often with free food!). Also, there are plenty of entertainment opportunities in the gymnasium, on-campus movie theatres (which are always running film series), and through the Peck School of the Arts (art showings, theatrical performance, musical performance, and dance productions). If you get tired of the constant offerings of on-campus entertainment, the university is situated just a shortwalk from North Avenue, Downtown, and the Historic Third Ward where there are plenty of movie theatres, restaurants, theatres, cafes, clubs, orchestral events, ballet, you name it - Milwaukee has it (even a spy-themed restaurant - the SafeHouse - with secret entrances, rooms, and much more).

    Food and Dining

Albeit dorm food isn't that great, UW_Milwaukee does a decent job. However, the cost depends on where you stay. Certain campus food options are overpriced and local food offerings make more sense than University provided food. Some dorm food, however, is quite cheap and is generally pretty decent.

    Dorm Life

Dormitory life at UW-Milwaukee is pretty great. The layout of most of the dorms allows for the formation of relationships and building of strong community bonds. The Living Learning Communities (LLC's) offer a great opportunity to meet, hang out, and learn with people who have similar interests as yourself. There are many activities offered by the housing departments and the general atmosphere is bright and active.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, although offering some very easy classes at the lower level, provides a rigorous academic atmosphere for those who are willing to succeed. This unversity may not be Ivy League or UC-System, but the professors are graduates of well-known universities and at the undergraduate level there isn't the pressure of a high name university hanging over you. Overall, I have found my classes to be entertaining - but certainly not a walk in the park.

    Tips for prospective students

I have two tips for prospective students. The most important thing a new student can do is network and form relationships with your professors (even before the semester starts too). This will helps your grades, the professor's ability to help you and understand where you are in the course material, and also lead to some pretty awesome research opportunities. My second piece of advice is that students should check out the Office of Undergraduate Research. They offer a wonderful summer program for incoming freshman (room and board paid) and they offer research opportunities in many departments (there were upwards of 190 projects listed in the Fall of 2011) and schools across campus.

    In three sentences

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is, to say the least, understated. It boasts a brilliant Undergraduate Research program that gets students (freshman through senoirs) out of the classroom and applying thier skills to fields that interest them. This University has strong academics, highly intelligent professors, and a welcoming social scene.

There are probably unusual traditions and locations on campus but I am not aware of any personally.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other schools, UWM is fairly cheap. It is obviously not as cheap as a technical college but cheap compared to a lot of the private schools around here. Though, with the money that we put in, I do believe that what we pay is good for the education we are receiving!

    What to do for fun

Milwaukee is close to Lake Michigan so in the summer that is always the key place to go. Also, on campus, there is a rec center where one could go bowling, play pool, or even play video games. There is always something going on on campus, it is just the matter of looking for those activities!

    Food and Dining

There are SO many places one could go to get food. Since Milwaukee is so large there are many different fast food places while also a lot of nice sit down places. Whatever mood you are in, Milwaukee has got it!

    Dorm Life

I think depending on which dorm you live in, you will have a different experience. I lived in the Riverview dorms and they were off campus. Since they were smaller and were off campus, I didn't meet as many people as I would have hoped. I say move into Sandburg since those dorms hold the most people. Although, the only downfall of those dorms are that they are the oldest... Riverview and Cambridge are the newest and the nicest. All in all, it is mainly what your preferences are.

    Academic Rigor

For most majors having a high GPA is what is going to get you into your major. It may be easy to get into UWM but the major is what everyone is trying for!

    Tips for prospective students

Have an open mind about meeting new people. You are not going to be making friends with people who are in your expected group. Also, study study study! Some majors are very competitive to get into so having a good GPA and doing LOTS of volunteer work is key!

    In three sentences

This school is great for anyone that loves the city. There is so much to do while still earning a great education. I also love how (most) professors will meet with you one-on-one to discuss grades.

Never scared to go out alone at night if necessary. Not recommended, but I've never felt unsafe.

    What to do for fun

Bradford beach is only a short walk away and the city of Milwaukee has plenty to do.

    Dorm Life

The suite style dorms are very nice so you have your own bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

Take hard classes to the start so you can get off on the right foot.

    Campus Safety

I feel safe when I go to school here, and that's all that matters.

    Clubs and Activities

I'm not in any clubs or activities, but if I wanted to I could easily be in about 50. The student Union here has plenty of bulletins and people set up at table's trying to get students involved.

Great for these types of students

If you love being by the water, this is a great place for you since the campus is about a mile off shore. I highly recommend this school to kids interested in Architecture. If you love the hustle and bustle of a city, Milwaukee is the place for you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The hottest place on the weekend late nights is the Greek restaurant, Oakland Gyro's, where the place is packed with college kids looking for something great to eat.

    Bang for the buck

At UWM, you get what you pay for. Most of the campus has beautiful outdoor spaces to enjoy, but some of the classrooms are not very exciting. Easily the best thing about Milwaukee is the location, that's really what you're paying for.

    What to do for fun

There's always something to do in Milwaukee, whether it's going to see the Milwaukee Brewer's for 10 bucks on Friday night's, see a live band at The Rave, taking a walk along Lake Michigan or exploring the downtown area. The possibilities are endless. There's numerous shopping center's and interesting museums and parks as well.

    Food and Dining

Milwaukee offers tons of different restaurants, but the majority of them are off campus. However, the on campus ones do just fine for a college student with the budget we have. From Greek to fantastic italian to soups and sandwiches, UWM's campus keeps us fed.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorms Freshman year and compared to other schools in Wisconsin, they are pretty nice. You share a bathroom with a couple other guys instead of the whole floor, and security is tight so it is a very safe place. Just be sure to bring a fan for the hot months.

    Academic Rigor

I feel like most programs here are average in the level of work, but the Architecture program I am enrolled in is extremely rigorous. It's almost like a full time job where I am working at my studio from 5 to 9.

    Tips for prospective students

The campus is improving and they are working on getting a brand new student Union, but tuition will go up. The courses are not too challenging and they offer plenty of majors to select from. The city life is fun as well as safe.

    In three sentences

Overall, I feel Milwaukee is a slighty above average University when it comes to most academics. However, the Architecture program is one of the best in the state and country and is the reason I attend this school. It's location is great being near the lake where you have many things to enjoy outside of school.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous of available fun activities to do on campus, especially with the different types of organizations and groups there. Also, there is always a presentations, movie, or show going on, on campus.

    Food and Dining

The food at UWM is pretty decent. There is a variety of food choices and venders to choose from. For example, Burger king, Taco Bell, etc. But, some of the food are too expensive for a college student to afford.

    Dorm Life

I live not to far from campus, so I have not experience this part of college so far.

    Academic Rigor

UWM is strict on their academic. They want to see their students succeed. So, if you fall behind on your gpa you are then on probation and if you fall behind again the following semester than you are suspended for two years. They do not play. But, you can counter act your probation by submitted an appeal through your advisor to see if you can dodge it.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep up with your academics and meet up with your advisor to ensure that you are taking the right courses and are staying on track. Also meet up with your professors when you need extra help. They are really understanding and sweet (some). Remember to study! Lastly, have fun and enjoy your college life.

Many people are big on athletics, including myself. So it was nice to have a fitness facility at our disposal as students whenever we wanted.

The food in the dorms were nice and varied daily. In addition to the dorms, the dining restaurants in our campus union was nice as well.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is a big issue at Milwaukee. Don't worry though, make sure you leave before the sun goes down, leave with a crowd, or leave with S.A.F.E. They walk UWM students to nearby apartments/houses at night.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of free classes that you can find online or brochures that will be sent out on mail. Use your free time to take free classes that consist of: crafts, sewing, yoga, palates, etc. The rec room is a neat place to hang out with friends! They have tons of pool tables, a bowling alley, games to play, and ping pong tables. Oh, don't forget the Gasthaus; it's a little bar/restaurant area that can be found in the lowest ground in Union building.

    Food and Dining

I have tried the food at Sandburg Hall, and I find that there are different varieties of food that I enjoy.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms, but I have visited them. All of the dorms have been renovated, and are up to date to live in them. There are lounge areas in each floor for students living on that floor. Some dorms have kitchens, and some do not.

    Academic Rigor

All classes are easy to pass if you attend all class, take notes, do your homework, and study!

    Tips for prospective students

Students make sure you save enough before you come to University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Don't be afraid to join organizations and use the resources provided here.

    In three sentences

University of Milwaukee Wisconsin is a very diverse and fast-paced environment. This college is for you if you're outgoing and willing to learn from some of the best instructors.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is above average. The neighborhood is generally very safe but some isolated incidents do occur. The school has neighborhood watch groups patrolling the area every day by foot and there is a van service called B.O.S.S (Be On the Safe Side) that offers students safe transportation around the campus area. Your panther email account will also contain reports of any campus security incident so you are aware of what's happening and can use the tips in the email to avoid being in an unsafe situation.

    Greek Life

Many fraternities and sororities exist based on major. Check your panther email account and school of major for more information.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities to attend in the business school. There are fraternities/sororities and honor societies that are offered by major and for those who obtain very good grades. These organizations offer outings, scholarships and assistance with networking. I would highly recommend joining at least one, especially because it will be an attractive addition to your resume.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to: commute, live near campus and take advantage of the nice area, take evening classes, find online classes, major in business, and attend a school offering support in finding jobs after graduation.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I am not aware of unusual traditions. I am an evening student who does not attend full time as I have a full time job so I don't spend time on campus during the day.

    Bang for the buck

The average estimated cost for UW-Milwaukee is about $30,000 for 4 years if you plan to live on campus. The cost is very reasonable compared to a private school. However, the school does add on many fees for online classes, business school classes, etc and does raise tuition about 5% per year.

    What to do for fun

There are many plays, movies, get-togethers and social groups to join. Be sure to look around the union for fliers advertising special events. If you're over 21 there is a restaurant located under the union that offers alcoholic beverages and plays sports. On North Avenue there are also many bars and clubs.

    Food and Dining

I did not partake in all the on-campus dining options but the union has a very nice cafeteria that offers fast food, snack options, vegetarian dishes and healthy wraps as well. There are also several coffee shops located on campus that offer plain coffee, several different types of teas and latte and mocha drinks as well as bakery. Be sure to check out their seasonal options if you're a regular coffee drinker.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in a dorm, I lived off campus. The dorms look very nice.

    Academic Rigor

Remedial classes (100-300) are very easy but don't get too comfortable. The classes intended for juniors and seniors get significantly more difficult. You will need to read textbook chapters for certain classes whereas before you may be able to get away with studying the professors class slides. Professors don't often offer study guides in later classes either so make sure to take specific notes. If you're looking to get A's and B's you should plan to attend as many classes as possible. If your class has a discussion section attached to it, you should plan to attend that as well. Many times the T.A.'s leading the discussion sections give you step by step direction on completing homework problems and can offer you personal attention.

    Tips for prospective students

Find out which professors are good and which are not, and then take the classes in summer to avoid the bad professors. Try to take some summer classes if you're hoping to save some money. Class costs are significantly less expensive then. You can also save money by looking up your ISBN number through the Panther Bookstore and searching online for used or rent-able texts. Often times the bookstore will not buy back your books and you're left with hundreds of dollars worth of texts you will not need to use again.

    In three sentences

This school is great for working students since they offer many night classes. The business school is great and offers a lot of assistance in finding a major and a job. The professors are generally willing to help assist you in learning the material and getting a good grade in the class but there are a handful who try to make the material difficult and are not at all helpful.

Great for these types of students

If you're into either art, science, and/or politics, partying, biking, learning, and living, this school is great for you.

    Bang for the buck

UW-Milwaukee is a great alternative if you are looking to get a great education, but can't afford to spend $40K + on a year's worth of credits. The housing available (not provided by UWM) is also usually cheaper than living in downtown Milwaukee or Madison.

    What to do for fun

Looking for fun things to do in Milwaukee is hardly ever an issue. The Miramar on Oakland ave is a great venue for bands and electronic music Wednesday - Saturday of most every week (the only downside about the venue being a small cover charge). For those who are 21 or older, there are many bars and clubs surrounding the area to have fun, dance, and meet new and interesting people. During the warmer months bike riding, rollerblading, running, or playing volleyball is quite popular around the beaches on Lincoln Memorial Drive.

    Food and Dining

While the dining on campus is slightly above average, the restaurants/bars/fast food venues around campus have a variety of different foods and dining atmospheres. Many different Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican, Indian, and Thai restaurants within a 3 mile radius of the main campus as well as a slew of smaller cafes/bistros, coffee shops, and local bars that are friendly to a student budget.

    Dorm Life

I myself have never lived in dorms on this campus, though, I have always heard great things about dorm life here. A good friend of mine met many others who were majoring in the same thing as he, most of whom became his best friends while he was living there and continue to be to this day. From what I gather, the dorm life is exceptional for study or fun time, and the rooms are larger and boast nicer facilities than most other state universities.

    Academic Rigor

No matter what program you apply for at ANY school, you should always try your hardest and aim for the best possible outcome of your education. That being said, UW-Milwaukee is slightly underrated when it comes to academic rigor because of its sister school competitor, UW-Madison. I've always found the classes at the University to be exceptional and challenging, with interesting subject material and great facilities to study. Every professor I've ever had at this University has been strict on helping students meet the academic requirements for their goals and has provided help outside of the classroom to anyone who might be struggling.

    Tips for prospective students

1.) USE YOUR RESOURCES. There are many professors and academic advisers on campus to help you to be the best you can be as a student and representative of the University. 2.) STUDY. No matter the class you have an exam in, don't wait until the night or morning before a test to start studying. Spend a good 30-60 minutes studying every day for at least 5 days before a test (do more for harder exams). That way, it won't feel like you're about to have a panic attack before or during the exam and you can save yourself a lot of stress. 3.) EAT WELL, EXERCISE AND GET ENOUGH SLEEP. The better you eat (i.e. a Mediterranean-style diet with lots of fruits and veggies, omega-3s, and leaner white meats and NOT frozen meals and Maruchan Ramen), moderate to intense exercise at least 3 times a week, and putting yourself on a good sleep schedule will not only make you feel better, but also help you to keep a clear head and do better in you studies. 4.) STAY POSITIVE. Even when things are looking grim, take a deep breath and remember that, in the end, everything will turn out okay. If you need a break, take it! Play a game, take a nap, go out with a friend, read some non-textbook material, do some yoga or take a bubblebath. Then after you've had that breather to clear your head, get back on the horse.

    In three sentences

1.) UWM has a lot of great programs for different fields of study including psychology, business, visual/performing arts, and nursing. 2.) There are a lot of resources on campus for research, as well as a load of computer labs and the Golda Meier library on campus to help you study in a good environment. 3.) When you're not in class or studying (or sleeping), there are always many things to do on and around campus, such as a movie theater in the Union, student organizations and activities, and a number of various bars and venues that host all ages or 18+ events.

    Bang for the buck

I'd say if your looking for a fun college experience and don't want to spend the money for Madison or Marquette, UW Milwaukee is the best way to go.

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of parties around campus every weekend if your into that sort of thing. Otherwise there are a lot of events in the union every weekend along with a full bowling ally and game room!

    Food and Dining

I would stay away from the food cooked in the cafeteria if I was you, but I gave this five stars because of the student union located right by the dorms. A meal plan can be used there and they have all kinds of great little restaurants, a Burger King, Taco Bell, and even a sports bar.

    Dorm Life

The dorms were enjoyable for a semester, but they did get old after that. They are convenient because of there location on campus but don't plan on eating to much food.

    Academic Rigor

While some classes can be challenging and require a lot of time and energy, most classes are fairly straight forward. Just show up, do your homework, maybe spend some time in the library here and there, B's, at least, should be no problem.

UWM is a great school to attend with a good sized campus and plenty to do. If you do get bored around campus downtown Milwaukee is only a few minutes away. Overall there is plenty of people and new experiences around every corner.

    Campus Safety

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has an extremely safe campus with its own police force, late night taxi service and trained campus escorts.

    Greek Life

Although there isn't a Sorority/Fraternity Row at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee like there is at other colleges, Greek life is alive and well in Milwaukee. Throughout the school year students can find booths where they can pledge to different sororities and fraternities on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There is no shortage of clubs at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with over 300 organizations ranging from religious groups to intramural sports to major-specific clubs. One of the largest clubs on campus is the Ultimate Frisbee team. If you cannot find the club you want, you can always start one of our own too. All it takes is four student chair members and a supportive staff member.

Great for these types of students

Since University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is the only university in Wisconsin that offers a degree in Architecture, the school is especially ideal for those pursuing a career in that field. The school also has great programs in Business, Nursing, Engineering and the Arts. The campus offers an ideal environment for anybody who is looking for a lot of diversity in their lives.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One interesting aspect of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's campus is the Alumni Fireside Lounge. This is a frequent napping spot among the students as it is quieter than the library and features couches, chairs and a fireplace. It is a great place to escape the harsh Wisconsin winters and relax between classes. The campus also has some fun traditions, like University Housing Day at Miller Park Stadium to see a Brewers game. Fall Welcome also culminates in PantherFest, which is the free-for-students concert put on at the Marcus Amphitheater.

    Bang for the buck

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee certainly does have a lot to offer, but like any higher education facility it doesn't come cheap. It is one of the more expensive public universities in Wisconsin, but it is also the only one that offers certain majors, including Architecture and Urban Planning. The programs at the school are more than exceptional, however, the tuition costs are not quite affordable.

    What to do for fun

Milwaukee has a long coastline on Lake Michigan, which means that there are beaches all up and down the city's East Side. If the beach isn't your thing, there are tons of events hosted on and around campus all throughout the year, including PantherFest, the free-for-students concert held the first Friday of classes as part of Fall Welcome. In past years artists at PantherFest have included Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco and Girl Talk. Milwaukee itself is also a city with a ton to do, just take a 15 minute bus ride to Bayshore Mall or in the opposite direction to the Third Ward for boutique shopping.

    Food and Dining

The food at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is about as good as campus food gets and is set up in a buffet style in the residence halls. Students with meal plans only pay about half of what restaurants charge without one. Milwaukee's Upper-East Side also has tons of great and affordable restaurants that are open later to cater to the college student's lifestyle. The campus also features several Grind Coffee Shops, including one in the library for those all-night study sessions.

    Dorm Life

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is home to one of the world's largest residence halls with Sandburg's North Tower coming in at 26 floors. If that isn't enough to be excited about, all of the residence halls are separated into a suite-style--no community bathrooms that you need to share with 60 other people! Suites can range from four to six people, all sharing a common area. Living in Milwaukee's residence halls provides students with access to a rich and diverse culture with plenty to do when they are not studying.

    Academic Rigor

Harder classes and more coursework is something that is to be expected upon transitioning from high school to college. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee eases this transition in that a majority of its classes are a reasonable challenge but do not overload the students with impossible work. Student schedules usually allow for frequent extended breaks between classes and sometimes even days off during the week which helps to ease the pain should a student have a difficult workload. Many classes even offer discussion or lab sections tacked onto the lecture to go into the material in more detail, and the campus offers a free tutoring service that is open to anybody.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a very good piece of advice to follow would be to use the school's resources. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a plethora of resources to improve its students' lives, and most of them are paid for through segregated fees in tuition; that means that there is no fee every time you use the on-campus taxi service, for example. Not only does the school have a variety of resources for campus-use, but things such as the U-Pass help around the whole city. The U-Pass is a school-issued bus pass that allows the students free city bus rides anywhere in Milwaukee as long as they are enrolled in classes for that semester.

    In three sentences

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is Wisconsin's most culturally diverse campus, hosting students from almost one hundred different countries around the world. It is known for its exceptional programs in Architecture, Nursing and Business, however, it's specialties are not limited to those three by any means. Milwaukee is also an excellent city to live in, being so close to famous landmarks and beautiful beaches.

    What to do for fun

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is located right next to Lake Michigan. There are tons of beaches and parks that many of the students go to on their free time. Heading into downtown Milwaukee, you'll be able to visit the museums. Just taking a nice stroll through the beautiful city would be a fun time.

    Food and Dining

Not only is there a bunch of places to eat on campus, but the University is located right in the heart of Milwaukee. Milwaukee is known for having some of the most unique family owned restaurants with incredible food, and typical chain restaurants as well. You'll find interesting new places to dine at on every corner.

    Dorm Life

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has some of the nicest dorms ever. A few of the buildings only a few years old. They are set up in an apartment-like way.

    Academic Rigor

Most of the professors are friendly and try to make class a fun place to be, all while learning what you came to learn. There are many classes to choose from to help you fulfill your major.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're the type of person that's always running late for class, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's campus is great for you. You only need about 2 minutes to get to each class on campus. Everything is in a nice walking distance, so if you run, you'll make it!

    Campus Safety

Pretty safe. If anything happens, which is maybe once or twice a semester if that, the school notifies everyone via email to keep a look out. There are safe buttons all over the place to signal the campus PD if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe. It's really quite peaceful more or less.

    Greek Life

I'm afraid there aren't any toga parties around (that I've seen). However, there are house parties all the time, and if you know the right people, it's not bad to go out now and then. Note: they get raided by the cops now and then also. If your 21+ there are a few nice bars on the east side nearby and a dancing club called The Library that's pretty fun. There are other clubs around too.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs are all student run, and you can choose to be as active as you want. There are nice events now and then that are pretty fun to check out, mostly involving a lot of specialty/ethnic events like Anime Club Events, Arab Nationals Events, things like that. If you go to the ethnic ones, they sometimes have really good food. Also, I've heard from one friend who's in a sorority that they like to party a lot which sounds pretty fun. The sororities and fraternities seem very friend/family/fun oriented.

Great for these types of students

Artsy, scientific, business-like, every kind of people. Everyone can find something and some place to enjoy there I think.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Central Plaza is a great place to hang out if you're on a break, especially when it's sunny out. You can always see students sleeping on the grass. Also, the library is pretty large and you an find a nice quiet spot pretty easily if you want less traffic moving about. Not too far away, people often go to the eat side on their breaks which is sort of an eclectic area. Also, there's always chalk reminders and things written everywhere: Vote for Student Council, Happy Birthday Lisa, Love the Earth, etc. (whatever you can think of, it's there).

    Bang for the buck

Pretty good, though with the budget cuts, everyone's gotten a little less tuition aid here and there. That being said, not bad at all. It's a large school, with a large community and large variety. Also, many of the departments are really quite specialized so it's great if you have a specific field planned off the bat. Also, I might add the Norris Health Center is great. Your tuition covers check ups and things during enrollment periods, and you only really have to pay if you need shots or medications, which you can get discounted or are super cheap as is. It's very convenient. Even if you are sick or something over the summer, it's just a one time $50 fee if you're only enrolled during regular semester times and you can go as often as you need to.

    What to do for fun

There's a rec room in the basement that has bowling, pool, and some games like air hockey. Across the hall from that there's ping pong. A lot of people hang out at the coffee shop on the 1st floor (The 8th Note) and also not too far away there's the east side (about 10 mins. by school shuttle bus) which has Wholefoods, clubs, bars, shops, and restaurants here and there that is pretty fun to explore.

    Food and Dining

On the second floor of the Union, there are mostly just fast food things (Burger King, Taco Bell) and bakery places (Pacific Wraps (pretty good, super filling) and The Flour Shop). There's also a Cedar Crest which is super awesome when it's hot out and there are snacks in the bookstore. There's also a pub/bar in the basement with good food, a convenience store on the first floor, and a lot of restaurants in the general area, some very close. It's a solid variety.

    Dorm Life

I've never had to live in the dorm, but have many friends that have. The dorms are small and cramped. Good for socialization, but that's about it. Most students rent a house or apartment nearby after their first semester or year.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers are strict in that they want you to get your work done, but if you have an idea that you want to try, or are having some difficulty for whatever reason, they are usually more than willing to help. Keep in mind, even though they want to help, they also want you to do the best you can.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have a good idea about what you want to do. However, if you need to take a semester or two to try out different things, fear not, because a lot of times once you declare your major, whatever you have taken is more than likely to fit in some part or another of your requirements. They like students to be well rounded, so it's just as well, but keep in mind, each major does have a lot of requirements to fulfill, so it's good to start as early as you can.

    In three sentences

I love going to UWM, the people are friendly, and there are a lot of options. The linguistics department is huge if you're interested in that, otherwise the art department is very substantial and I know first hand it's hard, but you can learn a lot here. No matter what you decide to do, the majority of the teachers are really nice whichever field and are more than willing to help you out.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know your classmates and professors, and pick classes that you would really enjoy.

    In three sentences

UWM has a lot of options. For example, I take several online courses. There a many programs available, and professors are always willing to mentor students.

    Campus Safety

There are call boxes, roaming security guards, and cameras throughout campus. The campus itself is in a safe area of town: just south of the North Shore suburbs. The campus is staffed with both student patrols and Milwaukee Police. Much attention has been paid to the welfare of the students.

    Greek Life

Yes, I do believe there are the usual sororities and fraternities. I'm an older adult student so I'm not into that scene myself, but they're here if you are interested. There are several Honor Societies as well - two of which I have joined.

    Clubs and Activities

I have never seen so many clubs in all my years. Not only are there clubs for the usual sports and affiliations, but even for ethnic, cultural, and academic groups. If you're bored at UWM, it will be your own fault for not seeking out the clubs which share your interests. The first several weeks into each session there are clubs and associations which hang out in the student union lobby so you can always find something new to do. If nothing else, head over to the on-campus bowling alley and strike up a conversation with someone there. The folks there can offer great insight into campus activities.

Great for these types of students

If you are seeking a culturally diverse campus with students from all walks of life, ongoing local cultural events, and great in-the-field and active professors, then UW-Milwaukee should be your first choice.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

If you're looking for a quiet spot on campus to get some work done, check out the third floor of the Library. There are always a few quiet niches up there which provide just the right setting to get your homework done.

    Bang for the buck

Here is the tricky part. Milwaukee (actually Wisconsin) residents receive quite a tuition discount. It takes a year to gain residency, but well worth it in my opinion. When I am finished with my major here at UWM, I will have a degree, which in my opinion will rival even those from Ivy League colleges. I am simply amazed by the various degrees offered and the segregated fees gives you access to a health clinic with mental health, the gym, movies, and so many other events - for free!

    What to do for fun

Lake Michigan is very near by the campus, actually about 3 blocks away from the eastern most part of the campus. There is always lots to do there except in the winter. Off campus, be sure to check out the Calatrava, our art museum. They have free days for Milwauke residents and students do count (with a student ID of course.) Milwaukee has grown greatly through the years and offers everything from great movie houses to ballet and the theatre. The Museum offers free Mondays for all residents and students. I'm not into the bar scene, but if I were I'd probably visit the Safe House near downtown. It's a great theme bar with a unique way of getting in.

    Food and Dining

The union is host to about 7 or so restaurants including a new Taco Bell. I personally prefer the Asian stand with their salads and healthier fare. Local establishments abound and are usually in walking distance. Fifteen blocks away is Brady Street - an eccentric street filled with eating establishments of all kinds. Prices are fair, but better off campus - as one would generally expect. There are several markets nearby as well as health food stores. One thing is for sure, you will not go hungry at UWM.

    Dorm Life

I am not familiar with the dorm life, but there are numerous dorms available, all of which have been remodeled or are currently being updated. There is much to do on campus including free movies, events, and regular sport activities. The dorms themselves have regular events as well. They are clean, well staffed, safe, and provide free transportation to the campus if in a remote location.

    Academic Rigor

As a full time student I find the course work easy to complete in a timely manner, but challenging with regard to content. I'm finding myself having to examine old paradigms and step outside my comfort zone. On average, with 5 courses a week, I find myself completing 4 papers per week, reading on average 7 chapters (including side articles and extra readings), and interacting both in class and online through the Desire to Learn interface. I transferred into UW-Milwaukee from a school where 15 page papers were the norm so for me the papers here have been relatively easy. Do not let my experience taint your interest. I know many students who have classes where there are no weekly assignments. Theirs are experiential classes. UW-Milwaukee is research institution so there are other ways to show off your newly acquired knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

This is not the typical campus in that professors will expect you to show up for your classes and participate during lectures. The population of students is quite diverse; every culture, age, and agenda are equally represented in the student body. Students are equally diverse with the amount of energy they spend doing their assignments. You will get out of your classes what you put into them. If you put in little effort then you won't get much out of your classes. There are a great many student associations on campus which range from cultural and ethnic to interests and hobbies. There is a student information desk in the lobby of the Union which always seems under used. They have great information about what events are happening on campus as well as on the various clubs and associations. Use them - do not hesitate to ask them questions. That is exactly what they are there for. Finally, don't forget to have a bit of fun. Milwaukee has many cultural events throughout the year. There is so much to see and do that it would be a shame if you never got the chance to explore a bit. Students too need down time.

    In three sentences

The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee is a school which prides itself on diversity, cultural applicability, and social awareness. It is a working University where an emphasis is placed on research and study. Be prepared to be challenged.

    Bang for the buck

Milwaukee is an affordable city both in terms of tuition expense and cost of living.

    What to do for fun

The are a lot of restaurants around campus along with festivals in the summer. Milwaukee Brewer games are fun as well.

    Tips for prospective students

If you have discussion sections offered for your class, make sure you attend them.

If you been curious about a certain major try it. College is a place to find yourself before you graduate. So get lost now, so you can find yourself 4 years later stronger.

    In three sentences

UWM is a school of opportunity that is rarely seen. The campus is intimate where you can always fine faculty that helped you or potentially will help students succeed. All together, its a school to get a foundation in your education so you can be a force to be reckoned with in society.

    Campus Safety

The campus is extremely secure, with campus police always on hand. They are friendly but get the job done.

    What to do for fun

Being right alongside Lake Michigan, sand volleyball, swimming, picnicking, and Frisbee are extremely fun and popular activities within walking distance. Exploring the city is easy and fun with the free Milwaukee County Transit pass (U-Pass) good for any bus in the Milwaukee area. For those over the age of 21, the bar scene is very lively and clean and also within walking distance. The beautiful scenery on campus will spark many conversations with fellow students and finding a buddy to hang out with is so easy with the diverse population.

    Food and Dining

Some restaurants can be a bit pricey in the area, but if you're a food connoisseur you'll be in the right place. The food on campus (especially in the dorms) can be a bit dry and repetitive, but it definitely beats high school food!

    Dorm Life

The dorm community is amazing. No one is left out, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion or any other minority type labeling. Looking for those fabled lifetime friends? Look no further as they really do exist! Get in a dorm for your freshman year and you will have more than a few friends, you will become part of a family.

    Academic Rigor

The exams are pretty tough and your teacher might be a pretty picky grader, but anybody can pull through. Set aside the proper time you will need for studying (your teacher will recommend how much time s/he thinks you need to set aside, but your mileage may vary) and you'll have no problem acing those quizzes and exams!

    Tips for prospective students

Considering UWM as your college of choice is not a bad idea. For the price, the campus offers everything the University of Wisconsin - Madison does, but in a more compact space. The Lubar School of Business is second-to-none as well as the many other colleges located inside of UWM. Get ready to study, as finals are hard! Parties are easy to find and an easy vice to fall into, but with the right friends or motivation, you should have no problem pulling through. Ask for help if you need it. The school offers many private and group tutoring sessions for just about every class, and the professors are always available for their office hours (at least 2 hours three times a week) so you will not be short for help. Getting involved is not only extremely fun and rewarding, it is often crucial for academic success. The friends and colleagues you will meet within the campus events and groups will help you in your studies as well as the rest of your life!

    In three sentences

UWM has a diverse and cultured community that is structured in a way that is warm and welcoming to students of all walks of life. The support provided for those tougher classes seems to be endless, and companionship is readily available if one so chooses. The teachers can vary in difficulty within the same course, which at times can seem unfair but all-in-all the university is one of the best in the state of Wisconsin!

They have so many different options for safety and to be honest, as long as you're careful, nothing bad is going to happen.

    Greek Life

They have Greek life here on campus but it isn't as intense as other schools. I know that they aren't allowed to have houses here but I think that they are still awesome to join.

    Clubs and Activities

They have all the clubs you could dream of and if they don't have something you wanted, you can start it! It is extremely awesome they have a club for everyone!

Great for these types of students

Independent students who are more laid back and like to find fun things to do on there own.

    Bang for the buck

I think the dorms and the meal plan are a TAD expensive but I love staying in Cambridge because I think that they are the nicest and the friendliest dorms out of the options.

    What to do for fun

Walk around the city! Go out to coffee and the thousands of little shops they have, Brewed on Brady street is my favorite! I love going to goodwill and to Lisa's Pizza. Sometimes we head over to Bayshore mall which always serves for a good time!

    Food and Dining

    The meal plan is fine just make sure to get the middle or the biggest one because I ran out of money close to the end because of how the system works it is a little difficult to have enough money on the first meal plan, and I dont even eat that much.;

    Dorm Life

Campus safety here is excellent. Milwaukee can be a scary city from the outside but with BOSS and campus police I feel totally safe.

    Clubs and Activities

There are SO many different clubs and activities on campus happening at all times. There's always something to do!

Great for these types of students

Well-rounded students with the ability and fortitude to fend for themselves. UWM is for students who like to guide themselves. Advisers help and professors help but it's always up to the student in the end.

    Bang for the buck

UWM, for the education you get and the connections (particularly through the business school/fraternities), is an excellent option. I think it is affordable and I work two jobs and take out FAFSA loans to pay for it.

    Food and Dining

Milwaukee has some of the best restaurants in the US and the food in Sandberg Dorms isn't so bad either. Definitely a lot of great food stops out here though that can be found on North, Water, and in the Third Ward. Milwaukee has a great mix of cultures so restaurants are always great to check out.

    Dorm Life

I was in the dorms for 1 year and they are pretty great. Once you move out you realize that you have to cook for yourself, pay for your own heat, etc. It's not the easiest but I liked the dorms and would do it again if I could.

    Academic Rigor

UWM is for students with a great work ethic. Anyone who isn't doing what they should be doing will eventually find themselves leaving but that being said with the right amount of effort you can go very far.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure going to school is the right option for you. Keep and open mind and listen to your advisers and professors.

    In three sentences

I think the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with it's involvement in Milwaukee and it's open mindedness towards innovation and moving forward, is the best option for me. What to do for fun

There is not a day where there are less than five activities taking place on campus including in the union and the dorms. There's bowling, trivia nights, pizza parties, sporting events, intramurals, jewelry making, pottery, poster expos, you name it! And it's always fun to hang out with your floor in the common area.

    Food and Dining

There is something for everyone, there's late night options, food is pretty much always available, and there are quick grab and go options all around campus. There are also nicer dining options available on campus which is good for a change-up or special occasion.

    Dorm Life

University housing is fantastic at UWM. The dorm community is fun, there's always something to do, you can get food whenever you want, and I feel safer in my dorm room than my house back at home.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on the classes you select and what school you are in, but either way you get out what you put into it. You can skate by, but you can challenge yourself as well.

    Tips for prospective students

If you do your work, try your best, and take advantage of the advice and help available to you, you will succeed. Put to use the tools and services available to you because they are plentiful.

    In three sentences

UW-Milwaukee has a wonderful location, close to the city and also nice suburbs. The large student body on a small campus gives the feel of a big school with the convenience of a small school. Campus Safety

There are places we can hit the blue light if we are being chased, police all over the city, and campus police all over (especially at night). This is a very safe place for people to be.

    Clubs and Activities

I can't think of a club we don't have! & if we don't, create it. There is a wide range of clubs and activities going on here. One in particular is Ultimate Frisbee Black Panthers. This is a well-known group on campus and are very good at frisbee.

Great for these types of students

Everyone! So diverse! If you like going to a school with about 29,000 people and a campus that is easy to walk across.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Oakland Gyros! Yum! This place is the perfect place for late night craves or after a night out before you hit the hay.

    Bang for the buck

The bang for the buck is remarkable! The school is always having something going on in our school's Union. There is Pantherfest which comes in the beginning of the school year and they get a big headliner to preform. This school was cheaper for me to come to than a in state school, with no scholarships!

    What to do for fun

What isn't there to do for fun! It's perfect because this school is on the good side of Milwaukee and 5 minutes from Lake Michigan, 10 minutes from downtown, and the school's campus has it's own little college town feel. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, cool unique shops, and plenty of things to do on the lake and in the city. It really is such a diverse place with things to do for everyone.

    Food and Dining

The way the food is set up is by paying individually for everything you chose to eat. This is great because you don't have to use a buffet credit like some schools have. Also, then you don't have to use them up before the next semester the money on your card rolls over to next semester. Which reminds me, you panther card is your life line. This is how you get food and how you swipe in to the dorms and get on the bus.

    Dorm Life

I was very blessed with the roommates I got for my first year! All four of us are best friends, sisters really! I couldn't ask for better people to be around. The dorms are well secured and very well maintained. The dorm staff is nice and considerate. The security can be harsh, but it's all to keep us safe.

    Academic Rigor

I am pre-nursing so the grading scale is higher than a normal one. The classes are very realistic and you really learn the information. As long as you study and attend classes, you'll be A.O.K. !

If you plan on going here, make sure you sign up for the dorms quick. Also, be positive and you'll do your best/

    Food and Dining

    Tips for prospective students

    Food and Dining

The food gets to be the same after spending a few months here. Don't get me wrong, it is phenomenal and very good. It would be nice to change it up a little more and serve healthier things for people trying to watch what they eat.

    Dorm Life

I found the dorm experience to be so much fun. I like how the dorms here are set up as little pods so you can see almost every room on your floor. It made the making friends experience better to get along with everyone.

    Academic Rigor

A lot of the professors here that I've had so far make sure you know exactly what you're doing. If you have trouble with anything, they are more than willing to help you succeed. At the first day of each class they will give you a set schedule of their office hours to use at your advantage. There should be no reason for you to not succeed here because everyone is willing to help.

    Campus Safety

The campus is a very safe place. The police, security, and cameras are all out there to keep everyone protected from danger.

    Clubs and Activities

There are all sorts of club and activities that you can be present to. There is a huge gym where you could stay fit. At UWM, there is something for everyone.

Great for these types of students

    UWM is fit for everyone.

    Bang for the buck

UWM provides you with a free bus pass, that can get you anywhere. On top of that UWM has what is called BOSS, which is basically like a taxi, where it could get you anywhere in downtown. Tuition is very reasonable, about $9,000 per year, that is the amount if you do not live in the dorms. If you plan to stay at the dorms, it would be about double that amount. It is still way better than most other colleges where tuition cost is huge.

    What to do for fun

There are always activities on campus. UWM has a awesome activity room where you can go play billiard and bowling. There is a bar and coffee shops. You can go to many presentations and concerts that occur on campus. The campus is located on the east side, which is right by the lake. In the summer time it's perfect to go to the beach. Milwaukee has tons of restaurants, clubs, shops that you can go to and it is all near the campus.

    Food and Dining

There is a reasonable amount of variety in food. I have to say most of the food there is pretty unhealthy, but can still find something that isn't too bad for you. Furthermore, there are many places to out to eat such as qdoba and noodles.

    Dorm Life

It is a wonderful way to meet people staying at the dorms. There are great people all around with many

    Academic Rigor

UWM is a fantastic school for business, art, medicine, and much more. It is said to be the best school in the Midwest for art.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for classes early because there would be a better chance of getting into a course without it being filled. Also, if you can, commute to campus because living in the dorms gets to be expensive.

    In three sentences

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a prestigious school with great opportunities to earn your degree. it is the best college in Wisconsin for art. It is a great place to meet new people, earn a degree, etc...

Panther Prowl an annual 5k, and Panterfest a week long welcome bash at the beginning of the year (September)

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive no matter where you go. However, UWM is way cheap compared to UW-Madison or Marquette. In fact, many of the professors at UWM teach at Carroll University (private) and Marquette. They are all well educated.

    What to do for fun

Tons! Downtown Milwaukee is full of restaurants, clubs, taverns, museums, and parks. UWM has plenty of on campus events as well.

    Food and Dining

Lots of options in the Union, including coffee houses and sit down @ the Gausthuse

    Dorm Life

I can't speak to dorm life. I have always lived off campus and commuted.

    Academic Rigor

The 100 level classes (in most cases) reflect their level. Courses do get harder as you go on. Once you decide on a major the first 2-3 courses in that path are designed to weed out students who can't hack it.

    Tips for prospective students

Tour the campus and talk to current students. There are many living options, from dorms, rentals to commuting.

    In three sentences

Beautiful campus, old trees and amazing architecture. The vast majority of my professors have been extremely dedicated and caring educators. This is a wonderful urban campus with a plethora of education options.

Not very good. Monthly emails in your inbox about armed robberies near or ON campus...un-nerving. I've never had anything happen to me though.

    LOTS!!! They have everything.

Great for these types of students

Film, Architecture, Business, Environmental Science (consulting), Pre Med

    Bang for the buck

Tuition keeps rising every year. Do not get what you pay for.

    What to do for fun

Get involved in clubs/groups. For example I am on the Equestrian Team and get to travel and compete at horse shows! Go to movies in the Union Theatre for free. Go to art gallery openings around Milwaukee. Art museum. Bradford Beach. Join a volleyball league at a bar. Going to bars is mostly what people do (hello, Wisconsin.)

    Food and Dining

Pretty good. They have a lot of vegetarian and gluten free options. The salad bars are pretty cheap. Not so many vegan options. Taco Bell, Pacific Wraps, Burger King, Cedarcrest, Sushi, etc. Lots of cafes around campus The Grind.

    Dorm Life

Did not live in the dorms here. But I have heard it is pretty wild. Had a homeless man die of an OD in someones dorm this semester. They try to crack down on drinking so a lot of freshman get underage tickets.

    Academic Rigor

Totally depends on the class. Chemistry- very difficult. Math classes at this school I have found are quite easy to pass and give you lots of possibilities for extra/easy points. Most Gen Ed classes quite easy. Bio Sci department classes are challenging but you get a good grade if you really care and take the time.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to lecture- some professors will put notes up on the website (D2L) but some will not put any up- so you must take notes and go to lecture to do well! Form a study group and try to teach your peers the material- it makes you understand it better yourself. Take advantage of TA's and free tutoring!

    In three sentences

Middle quality teaching, some professors are awesome but some (the chemistry department) are terrible. If you want to get internships while at UWM, it will be very competitive. Many clubs and ways to get involved in what you love though.

    What to do for fun

There are so many activities to do on campus sometimes you will not have enough time during the semester to do everything you want. Whether it is concerts on campus, or a sports event the school is always doing its best to make sure you as the student enjoy your whole experience during college. Look online or at main campus buildings for fliers that will advertise everything that is going on campus that week or for the upcoming weeks.

    Food and Dining

Have a side job because when you come to college you learn to be very grateful for all your parents have done and continue to do for you during your life. I learned how much my parents did for me which made me want to get a job very bad to earn my own money to spend on food or whatever I needed.

    Dorm Life

Personally, I did not dorm my freshman year because I got an apartment with my brother close to campus. It saved me lots of money which of course is crucial, but living in the dorms you will meet a lot more students compared to living off campus or close to campus. This is simply because you are surrounded by a lot more people and these peers tend to be a similar age which then helps you meet more people.

    Academic Rigor

As previously stated, it is critical to come into college mentally prepared. During the last semester of high school most students do not try or care because they think these grades cant affect them. However this is a very common misconception. Personally, I overlooked trying during my senior year and did not come as mentally prepared for freshman year as I hoped. If I had come with my mind ready to learn I feel my academics could have been even stronger. However, everyone is going to be nervous so do not let nerves or stress interfere with your academics.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in mentally prepared for college! Having nerves is going to be normal but you have to remember you are not the only one starting a new school year at a new place. All the students you will be around most likely are just as nervous as you are. After just completing my freshman year I remember coming to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee very nervous, and I also did not think I would make friends. Of course, I was wrong, and when I started talking to my new friends I asked them how they felt coming in to the school year. Most people replied they were scared or a little nervous which made me realize everyone around you is nervous also. Don't be shy, go approach some kids hanging outside and start talking to them and you will be happy you did not wait for friends to come to you.

    In three sentences

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a very diverse school with a diverse group of students who all have the same mission, to receive some sort of college degree. The professors have a similar mission which is to help us students succeed in getting a college degree. All of the students here are attempting to start off fresh in their studies, and begin to to build a positive beginning for the career they choose.

Transferring from a community college to a four-year institute is a step that is often underestimated. The mere increase in campus size is enough to jaw-drop an individual. In regards, I speak about myself; for I am amazed by the improvement in the quality of the students, classrooms, professors, faculty, assistance, technology, and dedication.

    Dorm Life

Housing seems to be run by soulless government drones. Sandburg is the oldest dorm, but it's the cheapest and most conveniently located. If you live in the off-campus dorms, the shuttle will make you late for class at least once and probably quite frequently.

What I learned at Orientation was that the first couple of weeks there's so much for students to do to get involved and meet people right off the bat. From what it sounded like, there's plenty to do all year round to continue to meet new people and make your current friendships grow.

    Food and Dining

The food I had while visiting was phenomenal. I wasn't expecting cafeteria type food to taste so good and the dining was very clean unlike how it is in high school.

All students get a free Milwaukee County Transit System bus pass, USE IT! Milwaukee is a wonderful city with lots going for it- there's the Art Museum, Discovery World, Miller Park, Mitchell Domes, the Public Market and Historic Third Ward, etc.

    Food and Dining

There are lots of places open to students that are pleasing. Meal plans are only offered to students in the dorms, but gold card accounts on your ID can be used at all on-campus restaurants by any student.

    Dorm Life

All dorms are suite-style, with four to six students sharing a suite with a bathroom. This style allows you to become close with roommates, suitemates and floormates; you also don't have to share a bathroom with an entire hall. There are at least 15 floors in each tower of Sandburg Residence Hall, but elevators only go to odd-numbered floors...which is detrimental to those on even-numbered floors.

    Academic Rigor

Rigor is based on individual programs. Two colleges in the university- the Lubar School of Business and the Peck School of the Arts- are nationally renowned.

    Tips for prospective students

Getting involved on campus is easy. There are all sorts of organizations available, and you're bound to find something that interests you. Also, take advantage of using the student union- there are eateries, there is a movie theater, a bowling alley, an arts and crafts center, and more!

UWM has their own police department connected to the Sandburg dorms. You will always see them driving around campus. At night, you will see officers with vibrant vests on labeled S.A.F.E that walk around the surrounding neighborhoods for those who may need help. Through out the campus you will see bright blue emergency call centers if any sort of emergency is happening. The campus also offers a taxi service called B.O.S.S that can pick you up and bring you back to your dorms if you are within a reasonable distance from campus. The dorms do bag checks almost all the time, and have a check-in system for the students living in the dorms as well as any visitors they may have. This way, they always know who is in the building.

    Greek Life

Fraternities and sororities are also on campus, but they are not as big as other universities. There aren't labeled houses, and they aren't advertised much around campus. Most of what I see are fraternities for men in the same majors such as a fraternity that focuses on engineering and math math majors. If you are interested, it is very easy to find them on the UWM homepage's search engine.

UWM offers a great sports facility for their athletes and non athletes to use anytime. Classes are offered as well as your standard gym. They offer an athletes gym as well as non athletes. The athletic department tries their best to keep their student body involved with the sports by offering free give-aways and such. UWM also offers a wide range of clubs as well!

Great for these types of students

I believe anyone could come to UWM and feel comfortable. I say this because there is something for everyone to do on or off campus. The only thing that may be uncomfortable is the big city and amount of people if you are used to a small town...but if your looking to get out of that small town, UWM is perfect for that too!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

UWM does not have a University football team, so instead of having a big Homecoming like other universities, the school puts on a free show at the Summerfest grounds for their students called Pantherfest. If you'd like to bring a friend who does not attend UWM, it's only $10.00 for their ticket! Since I have attended, they've had performers Kid Cudi, B.O.B and this year it's MacMiller.

    Bang for the buck

This may be a bit bias, but after attending another UW school, Milwaukee is wonderful. The classes offered make it easy to give yourself almost whatever schedule you'd like. This makes it easy for those who have to work, like myself. The classes are challenging and you get a lot out of them at an affordable price. When Your not in class, the campus is at such a convenient location you can have fun and do pretty much whatever your little heart desires.

    What to do for fun

During the warm times the Lake is only a couple blocks away with a nice beach. The summer fest grounds are close too for the annual Pantherfest every Fall. Only a couple blocks south of the campus is downtown with their lovely shops and restaurants. If your a nigh owl, don't worry there's plenty of night life as well. For the shoppers, you can use your U-Pass for a free public bus ride to the Bayshore Mall.

    Food and Dining

Their program is of one of the cheaper ones in universities. They have small convenient stores in each dorm building that you can use your meal plan for, as well as a dining area like a cafeteria. The Union also has many different places to grab a quick bite, even ice cream! But if you live off campus and do not have the meal plan, with out, the university charges double to those students who pay with another form.

    Dorm Life

I have never personally lived in the dorms, but have friends who have. They are a bit strict because after all, Milwaukee is a big city and the staffs main priority is your comfort and safety. The rooms however are a bit tight, but they also offer apartment set ups that are little more roomier.

    Academic Rigor

This area all depends on the student. Yes, most colleges have some classes that are a bit easier but Milwaukee's gen Ed courses are just as challenging. The professors and or TA's really challenge you to think in different ways. Most of the time your classes will have a lecture course with the professor, then at a different time a smaller class of about 15 students will meet in a discussion session so you can better understand the material. If that doesn't help, the professors are always willing to meet with you. This is one of my favorite qualities about this University, you never feel left behind.

    Tips for prospective students

If your looking for a University that's a lot of bang for your buck, Milwaukee is the place. The campus is gorgeous and antique looking. It's also very easy to get around, considering that it is a division one university. If living on campus isn't for you, there's so many houses and apartments to choose from around campus and even a couple blocks south in the downtown area. Lets not forget the beautiful Lake that is only a walk, jog, or bike ride away.

    In three sentences

Quality at an affordable price. Teachers love to be involved with helping their students. Provide so many different options and times with their classes.

    Greek Life

I do not have too much to testify about the Greek life on campus because I am not aware of it so much but I do know that there is a club for it.

    Clubs and Activities

The university has numerous clubs and organizations. They have various ethnic organizations. They have many music and band clubs. They have club or organization for just about anything.

Great for these types of students

UWM is a great school for those who are not exactly sure what they want to study because of the university's diverse academic options. UWM is a great college for anyone that enjoys a large open campus. The University is for anyone that wants to spend time outside of class doing things they enjoy on campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a conservatory in the middle of the campus where students can go and observe nature and relax. I find this feature very impressive to have a fairly large, conserved woodland area in the middle of the campus in the middle of a big city like Milwaukee. We also do have a decent planetarium.

    Bang for the buck

For Tuition and Fees, UWM provides numerous things to do and enjoy. Food and Dining is amazing. Housing is excellent. The services provided are quite well done as well. Overall it is definitely a bang for the buck.

    Dorm Life

I love the dorm life. One can definitely get a sense of independence from living in the dorms here at UWM. The rooms are pretty good. My view in particular has an astonishing view of the lake from the 13th floor.

    Academic Rigor

Academics is fairly rigorous. Coming from a college prep IB school, the material that I am taught is fairly simple and easy to follow. It is challenging but not extremely challenging where it seems overwhelming. Even when it does beocme overwhelming, instructors and staff are available to assist you.

    Tips for prospective students

College is much more different than high school. You will have a fair amount of free time so you can learn how to manage time wisely which is an essential skill needed for a college student. It is definitely something to look forward to. Although college can be quite fun at times, be aware that students need to learn how to balance their life with their commitments to their classes, work, and family.

    Campus Safety

B.O.S.S. Vans will take you anywhere within 2 miles of campus, B.O.S.S. guards are out on the streets around campus at night, the security people are actually off duty cops, and UWM is in Shorewood, a upper-class neighborhood with minimal crim. Thus, UWM is a very safe school

    Greek Life

There are a few Greek organizations, but from what I've heard, you should shy away from the social sororities, because they still engage in hazing.

    Clubs and Activities

Strategic Gaming Club, Engineers without Borders, Society of Women in Engineering...the list goes on! There are so many groups, and each is well run and well funded.

Great for these types of students

Any type! UWM is so diverse there really is something for everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Visit the Rec Center! People forget its down there, but they have bowling, pool, and ping pong! The fountain at night is pretty cool because you can wade around.

    Bang for the buck

For such a cheap school, I really feel like I'm getting my moneys worth with all the things to do and classes to attend.

    What to do for fun

Explore Milwaukee! UWM gives you a free bus pass, so you can go anywhere, anytime. There are plenty of clubs, like the strategic gaming club (made me cry from laughter while playing board games!) and Engineers Without Borders. Hangout in the Library, watch movies at the Union or Flix, the on-campus movie theaters, or do one of the many events thrown all over campus!

    Food and Dining

The food from the Sandburg Café can definitely suck sometime, and the hours of operation are not always to everyone's liking, including me, who eats lunch at 3 when lunch ends at 2 and dinner starts at 4, but there are many alternative options. From the Union Station to the assorted shops, like Taco Bell, in the Union to even the Gasthaus, there are many choices for good food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms, while large and imposing at times, are all in all rather nice. Being in a Living Learning Community is also rather nice, as you can connect with people who share the same interests as you. Plus, the floors are co-ed, which is great if you're like me and don't get along with other girls as well as you do with guys. In Sandburg, there are common areas shared between two floors with a TV, couches, and microwave. These areas are perfect for meeting new people or hanging out with old friends.

    Academic Rigor

There is an Honors College within UWM that will give you an Honors Diploma if you make it out alive. This program is more in line with the more liberal degrees, and doesn't mesh well with programs in the sciences. The Business Scholars program is the Business degree equivalent of the Honors program, and offers courses at a more rigorous pace. For the math and sciences programs, you're course load should be hard enough as it is!

    Tips for prospective students

Tip #1: Get your FAFSA in early and apply for as many scholarships as you can Tip #2: If you're living on-campus, join a Living Learning Community. The people will be more like you and you'll have an easier time making friends! Tip #3: If living in Sandburg, shy away from even floor numbers and the A rooms. Elevators only go to odd floors, and A room is the smallest style of room.

    In three sentences

The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee is generally thought of as a 'second-choice' school. While this is true for many, including myself, I believe I am far happier here than I would be at my first choice. The people, activities, classes, and overall atmosphere create an inviting and welcoming school experience.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is great, its convenient and safe. I love the fact that I don't have to leave my building to do laundry, workout, and grab a bite to eat. It is close to the whole campus, I don't have to walk to far to get to any of my classes.

    Academic Rigor

The homework is difficult, but its all interesting things that you will want to learn. While learning the hard stuff doing your homework it will make it that much easier to do well on exams. Study hard and you will do fine, study with people, and in groups. Studying with a group of friends can make it fun and much easier than by yourself. Also its important to find a good place to study. The library is my personal favorite though. It is quiet and a really comfortable place to study.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you leave yourself some time to still have fun and socialize, but also make sure all the work gets done. Don't procrastinate or fall behind, because it can be very difficult to catch back up.

    Clubs and Activities

I am part of the Intramural Trivia group which is similar to the Scholastic Bowl that I was in in high school. Trivia group is a fun, relaxing way to spend time with other students. There are many, many more groups and clubs to join, but I have not don so yet.

    What to do for fun

Milwaukee offers all that a large city can: museums, lake-front parks, dining, clubs, events, great public transportation, and professional sports. Campus offers much, too, including clubs, sports, movie theaters, restaurants, rec center, and gym facilities.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall is cafeteria style, so you only have to buy what you like. There are many other options on campus, including fast food, late night restaurants, a food court, a sports bar, coffee shops, and convenience stores.

    Dorm Life

I have a private room, but it is in a suite with three other people. This type of housing, along with several other styles (regular dorm rooms, apartment style, etc.) means that there is a housing option for everyone. I also am in a Living Learning Community, so there are planned activities for our floor that makes dorm life fun and helps me meet a lot of people.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the courses are way harder than high school courses, but strangely enough, my toughest course is also my favorite. It makes a difference when you are working hard toward a major or career goal rather than putting in the time in high school.

    Tips for prospective students

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do for fun at UW-Milwaukee. Lots of people, like myself for free time go to the Klotsche center, which is something similar to a YMCA. Or sometimes you can switch it up and go to the Recreation center. The Rec center includes, bowling, ping-pong, video games, and pool. There are lots of things that you can do on campus to keep you active.

    Food and Dining

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is amazing, and I would recommend any new incoming freshman to stay in the residential hall. DO NOT listen to anyone who trash-talks this school. Because it is a public college with a huge acceptance rate people tend to look down on it. However if you are smart about it you will be able to get even more opportunities than you could have at any other expensive private school, so be smart about it.

    In three sentences

A wonderful school, with great opportunities. It offers not only great academics but a diverse campus as well. It is quite apt in preparing its students for the real world.

    Campus Safety

This is not an area to brag about. We are an urban college, and although I have not specifically had problems, there are often alerts about robberies at or around campus. I will say they seem to be good about giving alerts - but it would be better if there wasn't anything to report. I would not walk alone at night, but otherwise I think it is generally ok.

    Greek Life

The Greek life is essentially non-existent and I love that. I went to another school where is was common, and I hated it. If Greek life is for you, this is not the right school for you. This is a pretty rugged, down-to-Earth type of school. Elitists generally not welcome.

Great for these types of students

Non-trads, people interested in education without all the hype, and commuters.

    Bang for the buck

Check the Union for deals, as they are ever changing.

    What to do for fun

Bowling alley in the basement of the union, free movie showings in the upstairs portion of the union, North street or Brady street on the weekends. Summer is all about the festivals around town.

    Food and Dining

There are quite a few options at the union. I don't know what the dorm food is like (see comment above about dorm life), but the rest of campus has a fairly good variety. There are fast food options, camopus-run coffee shop (several throughout campus, including one in the main library), and more traditional cafeteria-type food. There is also a bar in the basement of the Union, which can be nice after a rough week (great deal on the bloody marys- they are essentially a meal in a glass).

    Dorm Life

No comment. I am a non-trad student and didn't experience dorm life here.

    Academic Rigor

General ed classes are kind of a joke, as this school is pretty easy to get into. Once you get through those, if you are still there, it is worth it. The rigor becomes high caliber at the 400 level or above. Before that, it is just playtime.

    Tips for prospective students

Faculty tends to be very hands-on and approachable, in my experience. I have primarily been in a specific program the whole time, so this may not always be the case. This being said, take the time to get to know professors - they will help you if you show interest. Take advantage of free academic programs on campus to help you succeed and study less. PASS has a student-led tutoring program that is very helpful. This got me through Physics and Anatomy -passing both with an A. Totally worth the time! Get a transportation sticker on your student ID each semester, and don't lose it. It costs $50 to replace, but is free the first time you get it and it allows you free parking in certain areas, and city bus use. Lastly, dress in layers. A lot of the buildings on campus have awful temperature regulation. Some are inconsistent even on a day-to-day basis. One class I had, we literally had 4 people in the class wearing snuggies! And the same day in another building I was sweating like I was in a sauna.

    In three sentences

This school is not full of glitz or glam. It is kind of considered the evil step-child of the well known University of Wisconsin-Madison. I actually consider these good qualities; less pomp and circumstance means more attention to the things that matter.

    Campus Safety

I have never felt unsafe on campus. There is plenty of security around and you have to check in to enter the dorms. Be safe at night and walk with friends or use security services to give you a ride.

    Greek Life

There are multiple fraternities and sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

There is plenty of clubs and activities including sports, major related clubs, church groups, and Greek life.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year Milwaukee has Panther fest, which is where students get to go to the summer fest grounds and see a concert. This year Matt & Kim performed with Mac Miller.

    What to do for fun

Their is plenty to do for everyone including intramural sports and different clubs. The Klotsche center is also available for students to workout and swim. In the union there is a game room with bowling, ping-pong, pool tables, and video games. Also downtown Milwaukee has plenty of good places to eat or shop.

    Food and Dining

The food is normally pretty good and the cafeteria has plenty of variety.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are laid out in a suit style with three rooms next to each other that share a bathroom. Each floor also has a small lounge and kitchen area.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major some classes can be difficult, but the teachers are very helpful. There is also plenty of study groups to help students out.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to all you classes and study hard. Also get involved as much as possible and meet new people.

    In three sentences

Milwaukee is a pretty large school with a lot to do. For such a large school the class sizes were much smaller then I thought they would be and most of the teachers are great. Overall it is a good school and it is not to expensive.

    Campus Safety

UWM is a very safe campus. There are many ways to secure your safety like B.O.S.S travel buses that take you throughout campus after dark and safe walkers that walk with you if you don't have a group. There are also safety buttons and numbers you can call if you are ever in danger on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

there are many different clubs and activities but often you have to be willing to be very involved because often new students are over looked and don't always feel welcome. be patient and with time you will be a part f the group.

Great for these types of students

I would say this campus in more for students who are independent and do not have a hard time meeting new people/are out going.

    Bang for the buck

overall tuition and everything that is included is reasonable and affordable!

    What to do for fun

in Milwaukee there is a ton to do for fun. often museums have student discounts certain days of the week and the campus offers free bus transportation with your tuition fee which makes going out easier. Campus is also not far from the beach and when the weather is nice you can play volley ball or catch some rays.

    Food and Dining

overall the food is pretty good, has many options for students and is affordable. the dining hours are very convenient and the food overall tastes good

    Dorm Life

though the dorms have decent food, very convenient in location, and accommodate to students needs, at times it is still difficult to meet new people even while living on campus. From past experience, dorm life was hard for me to adapt to and after first semester i found it best to live at home because i didn't meet as many people or make new friends like i intended.

    Academic Rigor

the academic work load is often easier when hard work is put into it. The difficulty and intensity is based on how much effort the student puts into studying.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you get involved in many activities, it makes it easier to meet new people, which is sometimes hard in such a diverse campus.

    In three sentences

UW- Milwaukee is a very diverse campus with many opportunists. The professors are top notch and are all very approachable and there for you. Class sizes are never to large and the campus is easy to navigate through.

    Campus Safety

I feel very safe at Milwaukee because the campus police are always around and send out information about the local activity.

    What to do for fun

The rec centers is always full of energetic, outgoing people wanting to be active. The union has a movie theater and plays new and classical movies, plus there are bowling allies, billiards and ping pong tables.

    Food and Dining

I personally love breakfast food, and Milwaukee provides the students with the opportunity to make their own omelets, waffles, fruit salads, and much more. Same with lunch and dinner, every dorm is different though. Sandburg is known for their burgers, Riverview is known for wings and Cambridge is known for fried foods.

    Dorm Life

Every RA and dorm is different. One RA had his floor bring lightsabers (from star wars) and they would have matches against each other. Another dorm made a taco line starting from the 27th floor and added another topping or part of the taco on the walk down to floor 10. There are movies, game nights and so much more.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes may be though, but the 100 level classes are fairly easy and help with the transition from high school to college. Once the 200 level classes become an option, think of it as the next grade level in elementary school. The work load gets a little heavier, and pushes you a little more.

    Tips for prospective students

Be open minded to new experiences and do not be afraid to try something new because Milwaukee has a lot to offer. Whether it's the clubs, organizations or regular events, campus always has something going on.

    In three sentences

The experience is endless at Milwaukee because there is something exciting to do everyday. You meet new people everyday, and continue to make friends because they are friendly. The students and staff at Milwaukee are super nice and positive.

    Campus Safety

I feel that the campus of UWM is extremely safe. Security personell at the resident halls are diligent and alert, especially during the night. The university also offers a free on-call taxi service called B.O.S.S (Be On the Safe Side) that will pick up students and take them to wherever they need to go when they don't feel safe. University Campus Police are very alert and prompt, usually responding to situations within minutes of a call being made.

    Greek Life

I do not know anything about the greek life on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

UWM offers an incredible amount of extracurricular activities. Any kind of club, group, or intramural sport one could think of is bound to be available at UWM. If, for some reason, the activity you are looking for isn't available or offered, you could easily create and organize the group yourself.

Great for these types of students

UWM is a great place for students who are looking for a diverse and well-rounded experience. The quality of academics and campus life are both at a very high level.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One location that comes to mind is the Fireside Lounge in the student Union. This is a place where a number of students go to take naps during the day. It is always quiet, and is a great place to study as long as you don't fall asleep first!

    What to do for fun

When it comes to free-time, it would be hard not to find something to do somewhere on (or off) campus. UWM has multiple Division I sports teams, so there is almost always a game that you can attend. Also there is the student recreation center on campus that offers bowling, billiards, and ping-pong, just to name a few. If sports aren't really your thing, there is the Gasthaus, which is the on-campus pub and has amazing food. UWM also has a movie theater called Flicks that plays movies every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Every dorm has usually got some sort of event going on, whether big or small, about once a week. If all else fails, the city of Milwaukee has so much to offer when it comes to entertainment, from movies and plays, to sporting and concerts, and everything in between.

    Food and Dining

In terms of quality, I find that to food is above what you would expect from a resident hall. Everything is always fresh and at the temperature that it is suppose to be at. As far as options go, there are times where the food choices are limited, especially during non-peak hours.

    Dorm Life

At UWM, all first year students are required to live in the resident halls, and I think this is a wise decision made by the university. I live in a Living and Learning Community that is specific to my major (Film), so I live on a floor that is almost entirely film majors. Regardless of if a student is in a LLC or not, i find a strong sense of community among all of the resident halls. The staff of the resident halls, as well as the hall specific student community counsels, do a great job of planning and offering frequent events for the students.

    Academic Rigor

The instructors here at UWM take their classes very seriously. Most teachers won't just give you busy work for the sake of busy work. I find that everything that the instructors assign has a meaning and a purpose, so try to find that purpose. Yes, every student going to have homework and papers, and yes, some days students will be up at unruly hours to finish assignments, but if you plan ahead and don't procrastinate, any student will do just fine.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to use your resources. Whether you are struggling in classes, seeking was to get involved in the community, or you are just looking for something fun to do in your free-time, there is always someone who will be able to answer any questions that you have. Your professors are not monsters. Most instructors are more than happy to help you when you are struggling and will, in some cases, work around your schedule in order to help you out. Instructors like having students who take the class seriously enough to ask questions, both in and outside of class. Get involved! There is so much that UWM has to offer.

    In three sentences

The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee is a well-rounded and diverse school. There is an excellent balance between academics and social events that all contribute to a fantastic experience. I feel a strong sense of community here at UWM.

There are three different police departments looking after our campus. There is one police department (campus police) right in Sandburg Residence Hall. There are also safety phones all over campus that connect right to the campus police. Students need to swipe in with their ID cards to get into the dormitories. No one is allowed in without their ID card or guest pass; all guests need to swipe in with a student or they are not allowed in.

    Greek Life

Greek life isn't big here because it is illegal to have more than three unrelated people living under one roof. There are fraternities and sororities but they are more like clubs here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every fall the school puts on a thing called Pantherfest were we celebrate the new year of classes by having famous bands or performers come play for us. Last year Mac Miller and Matt and Kim came to play for us. All full time students get one free ticket to go.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities to do on campus. There always seems to be something going on. There is also a recreational center in the basement of the union that has a couple table tennis tables, about 30 pool tables, a bowling alley, and a few Xboxs and PlayStations. There are also sporting events that you can attend or intramural sports. There is also a pool, indoor track, and two large work out rooms in the Klotsche Center/Pavilion. We are also a short bus ride to downtown Milwaukee.

    Food and Dining

There are a ton of food choices on campus. The cafeteria in Sandburg has many choices alone. Then there's fast food choices in the student union as well as a bar and restaurant in the basement. There is also other restaurants within walking distance.

    Dorm Life

I lived on the transfer living learning community floor in Sandburg hall. It was nice to be around other people that were transfer students. We were all able to learn about the school together.

    Academic Rigor

UW-M is close to Milwaukee's lakefront, which hosts art and music festivals. Many people sunbathe or play volleyball at Bradford Beach on the lakefront, while others jog, rollerblade, bike, or ride paddle boats. Milwaukee has the Art Museum, Public Museum, comedy clubs, Performing Arts Center, Repertory Theater, shopping malls, movie theaters, and many beautiful public parks.

    Food and Dining

Food and drinks are available in the Student Union on campus and there are a lot of fast food/quick meal places within a 12-block radius of the campus. UW-M is located fairly close to downtown Milwaukee so plenty of restaurants/bars to choose from.

    Dorm Life

Very little on-campus student housing, although out-of-town freshmen must live on-campus. Most students seem to commute from areas surrounding Milwaukee, or live with 4-5 others in off-campus housing. Dorm life is atypical at UW-M.
