Categories Comments Great for these types of students This University is great for urbanized students, who love and appreciate the African American culture. VSU is perfect for students who love to have a good time, while getting the higher education that their, or their parent's, hard earned money is paying for.
Tips for prospective students I advice anyone attending Virginia State University to not get caught up in the party scene like I did. It is great and made so easy, by all the organizations and activities on campus, to have a very active social life. Stay focused. There are counselors and student leaders all over eager and ready to help you achieve you goals. Take full advantage.
Bang for the buck VSU is expensive, especially for me being that I am an out-of-state student. However, I feel like it is worth every penny. There is never a time when you are sitting around thinking to yourself why am I paying for this? Everything is on point. The campus is beautiful. The curriculum is outstanding. And I must admit, the cafeteria food is not so bad.
Am enjoying being here Virginia State is without a doubt a party school. If you like to dress up and go out, then this is the place for you. Three, sometimes four, days a week you can find buses packed taking students into Richmond for the clubs. I love it. There are also so many activities (i.e ice cream socials, open-mic nights) for people to meet and greet or just chill out and hang with their friends.
Am learning a lot The professors that I have come in contact with so far at VSU, have all be amazing. The knowledge held within the school grounds is overwelming. I feel as though a little bit every day rubs off and sticks to me. I have learned so much being on Virginia State's campus. Not only was I learning from the professors and administrators, but other students and student leaders as well. 4 stars.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Minority Students, Intellectual students who are focused on their studies,Virginia and non-Virginia residents, and Athletes.
Tips for prospective students Virginia State offers everything a prospective student is interested in. From the comfortable residence Halls to the amazing three story library that is useful for every course not just literature and essays. Make sure to take advantage of the resources available such as the sisip program and the academic support center. You will love Virginia State University!
Bang for the buck Although I am an instate student I have many friends who pay out of state tuition and we all agree on one thing: Virginia State University is worth every penny that we pay. We are employed by campus departments we enjoy the food and rooms and as previously stated the events that take place are always to our liking. If we had to choose all over again we would still Choose Virginia State University.
Am enjoying being here No matter the time or season, there is always something happening on the campus. The best part is that the events are not only enjoyable but they are informative as well. You will be enlightened and entertained at the same time.
Am learning a lot The professors at Virginia State University are amazing, they are very personable and there schedules are very flexible. They are always willing to stay after class or set-up an appointment during office hours in order to assist with any problem the student is having.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students For anyone who want to have fun and who can stay focus on their work. Majority of the students might be African-American, but everyone is welcome, and everyone will get the same experience. If you just want to join clubs, the band, or the woo woo's, just join the family, you wont regret it :-).
Tips for prospective students Make sure you put your school work first, and don't party as much. After all its a party school, and there are at least four parties a week, so there is always time to party. Stay Focus on your assignments, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE, it's will catch up to you at the end. Meet new people, get out and join so clubs, take advantage of every penny your parents are spending.
Bang for the buck VSU is not a cheap university, it's take a lot of money. I had to take loans because I was a bit short on money, but then again I got lucky with an $5,000 award I received. For students coming from out of state, it's even more expensive, with all the money we are paying, at the end its all worth it, because we are getting our education, having fun, and meeting new people.
Am enjoying being here I LOVE THE CAMPUS, there is always something to do. It's almost impossible to be bored, Yes it's a party school but you have to know how to balance your social life and your school work. There is multiple places on campus we can go to have fun or just hangout with our friends. I love everything about being on campus, by just walking outside for some fresh air, its a very easy way to meet new friends.
Am learning a lot Each Professor try to work side my side with the students there. Very small classes, with less then 50 students in each, and really good useful technology to make learning easier. If we ever need extra help each professor is available all week on their office hours. With the help of my professors I'm learning a lot of new materials that will take me far in my education. Some of the classes might be hard but they all take hard work and long hours of studying.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students There is an abundant amount of minority students at Virginia State. Also students who are interested in sports such as cheerleadering, basketball, football, volleyball, etc.
Tips for prospective students DO NOT get caught up into parties. It's NOT worth having to miss class then end up having to take the class over. Make sure you use those office hours! Have fun and enjoy the college experience. Stay focus and strong. And remember why you decided to attend college...to graduate!
Bang for the buck Money will be spent while at VSU. Its either buying expensive books (that sometimes you don't need), paying for the out-state tuition (classes, swipe, housing), or spending money ($$$). All in all its all worth in the end because when you graduate you can say I DID IT!
Am enjoying being here Just like other HBCU's, VSU is known for the party life. The social scene can be nice at times but if you get caught up in it, you WILL have consequences. The campus itself is an comfortable and enjoyable environment.
Am learning a lot I like the fact the Virginia State has a small number of people in the classes. That way it would be a more personal one-on-one relationship with the teacher and student throughout the lesson. I made sure I went to my professor’s office hours every chance I got.

Categories Comments What to do for fun VSU is a huge party school. The Richmond club scene creates an exciting atmosphere on the weekends.
Tips for prospective students Often HBCU's are taken for granted due to the small stature in numbers. However, Virginia State is not to be taken lightly. The courses and professors are quite rigorous so students considering coming here should be on their toes.
In three sentences Virginia State is a wonderful univesity that offers a variety of academically challenging majors. Despite being an HBCU, the school maintains a relatively diserve makeup of students. They range from a number of places along the east coast and other areas which creates an exciting culture blend.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Make sure you do all the work that is necessary to even make it out of high school and into a university. The better you do in high school, the more options you'll have for any of your future plans. The most important thing to do is prioritize, that way you can get your work done , and then have time to have fun.
In three sentences I like their campus, its not too small, and not too big. I plan on being an education major, so I like the fact that they just build a new building for that. I like the location, It's far enough for me to be on my own and away form home.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Virignia State University is not a city school nor is it located in the city, so fun is created by the students most of the time. The university's student activities sometimes plan different for the students attending and that usually keeps the students entertained.
Tips for prospective students For all uprising freshmen students, I advise that you all make sure this specific university is the one for you . You are able to do so by going on your college campus tours and orientations. Futhermore, never lose sight on your purpose and your goal; no matter who tries to bring you down or break you down.
In three sentences As a current student attending Virginia State University, I would rate the university with an 8 out of 10. I absolutely enjoy what the university has to offer and I plan to graduate as well. Although the university is not perfect, it is perfect for me.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I go to an HBCU so it's an ideal place for African-American student. Everybody that would like to come here is certainly welcome though.
Tips for prospective students Check out the places you apply to before you choose that as your future school. Go somewhere you know you will be comfortable. If your not ready to leave home it's perfectly ok to find a school close to you. It is nice to experience independence, but sometimes it can become overwhelming.
Bang for the buck Although I enjoy my school it is getting wuite pricey and I'm not too sure it's worth every since I have to pay to be here.
Am enjoying being here The people here are great. They are welcoming, fun, and very focused. I may sometimes get homesick, but you'll make plenty of friends to give you comfort and support.
Am learning a lot I believe I am learning what I need to learn in my classes. last semester I could not say this. It seems much better this year. They are starting to teach and want to teach. Therefore, I am getting better grades.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I believe that VSU is great for students that have the ability to be focused on multiple things and are able to multitask well. Personal boundaries and a schedule have to be set by the students themselves if they want to succeed. A student that can do this and make time out to relax for themselves is sure to be just fine at Virginia State University. This University is great people who wish to learn and achieve many things at high levels of learning. Virginia State University is a door to many different types of students that have different goals and want a lot of opportunities, they just have to go and pursue it.
Tips for prospective students The biggest tip that I can give to prospective students is to stay focused. Once you get into college, there is so much freedom, though with that freedom things can get out of hand. In high school when things are less free to you, you learn how to have control of setting limits for yourself and that is a good thing. Its not good to slack off in any study, because once you are behind in a class, it can be very hard to catch up. If you stay focused and have your priorities in check, everything should be fine.
Bang for the buck I think Virginia State University is worth the money, because it provides a good learning experience of how things will be in the real world. There are so many opportunities that are available to students to communicate with the right people in companies of different workplaces. Like a lot of other colleges, it will be worth the money as long as you make the right choices and be able to multitask, but yet stay focused on what's at hand.
Am enjoying being here I think any high school student will diffidently have fun at Virginia State. There are so many things to do when have free time away from studying. The campus is beautiful and there are many different stores and a mall to go to on the weekends. It was such a big help to me that there was a bus that goes from campus to the surrounding areas because I could go shopping when I had time and if I needed to go the doctor's office, I was able to get to it by bus. At night though it can be a bit dangerous if you're by yourself, but that's with any college campus so it's best to be with friends. Besides the things you can do off campus there's also plenty of organizations that you can join and be apart of. If you don't want to join an organization, the different organizations hold different forums and activities all the time that you can attend without joining. It can be a very positive environment, as long as you don't get into trouble.
Am learning a lot As a student of Virginia State University I would say that you will learn a lot if you stay focused and on-top of your work. Without studying on your own time, passing a class may be difficult. The teachers here make available to you various ways of studying and learning which include online help and PowerPoint that are easily accessible. Even if you are in class and you feel that the subject is easy and you don't need to read the chapters, it's best to read the chapters and take notes so that you are not only learning the information that day but improving your knowledge of the subject, This will help you especially when you go out into the real world, you will be able to know what to do without always refering back to a textbook. Practice makes perfect.

Dorm Life As a freshman we are all skeptical about staying in a new school with all new faces. Staying in one of the freshman dorms Howard hall was one of the best decisions i ever made. living in a dorm provided me with hundreds of new sisters, a loving house mom, and we were also provided with monthly forms dedicated to help us with whatever we needed. It was a great experience !!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Any student of any ethnic background
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are various Trojan heads painted on the campus grounds. Rumor has it that if you step on the heads then you will not graduate.
What to do for fun Virginia State University is located in a central area accessible to the mall, small boutiques, and restaurants.
Food and Dining There are three dining halls at Virginia State University that are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and friendly staff. The food at each dining hall is tasty and priced reasonably for students on a budget. Food choices range from pizza, burgers, fries, fish, etc.
Dorm Life Dorm life at Virginia State University is an interesting experience. This experience may be different for each student. Residents must not have an issue with sharing and space because those two things will constantly be a factor during your stay at the institution.
Academic Rigor Classes at Virginia State University are highly rigorous. When enrolled in school your books become your best friend and the library becomes your new home next to your dorm.
Tips for prospective students 1. Meet with each instructor during office hours to inform them of your goals and aspirations. Get to the know the professor on a personal level in order for him/her to better assist you in class. This will allow the professor to see that you are not just another student but one interested in your education. 2. Take part in class discussion. Relate world events to topics that are discussed in class. This shows the instructor that are thinking and able to apply material taught in class. 3. Stay focused in class and take detailed notes. If possible sit in the front of the class so that the teacher can see you.
In three sentences Virginia State University is the ideal school for students looking for small class sizes with teachers that care about the betterment of each student taught. Coming from a small private school to a fairly large public institution has proven the easy process of adjusting. In all, I recommend any student to Virginia State University that is truly looking for an elite educational experience.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The atmosphere at Virginia State University is like a family that watches out fro one another. The administration is like your parents watching over you to lead you in the right direction. The RA's are like your big brothers and sisters to help out and give advice. The police force is like the watchful eye of your grandparents, giving you enough room but at any time will step in when needed.
Clubs and Activities There are so many things you can join on VSU's campus. There are academic organizations, Student organizations, and for upperclassmen Greek organizations. You always have something to choose from. Even if you want to make your own club or sponsor your own activity you can do that.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of the big traditions you will know about VSU is the Trojan heads. They were painted by the men of Omega Psi Phi inc. and they are dedicated the the fallen members of their organization. Now the tradition is to never step on a Trojan head, because if you do you will be delayed from graduation by a semester or up to a year. Now is is an urban myth but hey why mess with it?
Bang for the buck I will say that having the book store is a life saver. The book store supply everything. From the school side the books, supples, laptops, and also tablets. They also have food, clothes, personal items, and even movies. So, you don't even have to leave campus.
What to do for fun There is so much you can do on campus. There are socials, given by the Greeks and the student organizations. You can also join student organizations if you like in your freshmen year. There are always events everyday to give you that break from work.
Food and Dining The food is good, as the years go on it keeps getting better and the variety is getting better. I just wish we could swipe for a meal at anytime. If we can get 19 means a week it shouldn't be limited to only three a day. That is one thing that I really dislike about our swipes. Our student union should also be open longer.
Dorm Life As a freshman at VSU you are not allowed coed vistaion in your rooms. It is only allowed in the lobby during certain times. I understand why this rule is set in place. As freshmen we already has distractions just by being in this new place. We need to be focused on why we came to school. The reduction of any temptation one student may have had just helps the whole process. Even though you have a lot of freedom in college it's always good to have some type of control. Too much freedom can cause some freshmen to loose focus.
Academic Rigor VSU is very challenging, but at the same time the help you may need is right there and waiting. Whether it be a tutor, extra time with your professor, or just extra study material.
Tips for prospective students Do you research, take the tours, even call up professors if you want. Students who go to VSU will tell you the truth and give it to you straight.
In three sentences Virginia state university is a family. When you come to campus you feel welcomed. We are all about becoming better then we we first arrived.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Virginia State has 24 hour security. There are guards all over campus and their are also phones in distance reach for you to call security if you suspectany issues. Security at VSU is very tight. It's a very safe environment.
Greek Life We have 4 sororiteis and 5 fraternities on campus. They are: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. If you are interested in joining a greek fraternity or sorority you need to be discrete. You shouldn't be discussing this with anyone other than yourself.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of Organizations on VSU's campus. We have Organizations such as The Betterment of Brothers and Sisters Inc, True Foundation, Selected Ones, A Movement Walking, and SLOT. All the organizations previously stated help promote shcool spirit and spread awareness throughout the campus. There are dance groups such as AbstraXt and Panic 2000. We also have greek organizations if you are interested in that as well.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is very safe. You are in good hands at Virginia State.
Bang for the buck If you know that Virginia State University is the perfect school for you, don't let anything stop you from attending the wonderful university. Work hard to get scholarships and make sure you do everything to the best of your ability.
What to do for fun There are plenty of things you can do on VSU's campus. There are always socials in Foster Hall. You can also attend basketball and football games during it's seasons. Every friday their are parties in the Richmond area and you can also go to SouthPark Mall in Colonial Heights.
Food and Dining The food at Virginia State is delicious. We have two cafeteria's where the food is set up in a buffet style. Don't miss out on fried Chicken Wednesdays. There the best.
Dorm Life The dorms at Virginia State are great. As a freshman I stayed in Howard Hall which is an All Girl Dorm. The rest of the dorms on campus are either new or being renovated. I loved staying on campus.
Academic Rigor The classes at Virginia State are very intense, but if you work hard this shouldn't be a problem. Make sure your work is your first priority. If you need help don't be afraid to ask someone. You can also go to the Academic Success Center where their are tutors to assist you as well.
Tips for prospective students If you are interesting in attending Virginia State University make sure you maintain a fairly decent Grade Point Average. Work hard and apply for as many scholarships as you can, because there is no such thing as too much money. If accepted, make sure you get involved on the campus and help promote our wonderful school,
In three sentences Virginia State Univesity is one of the best Historical Black Colleges in exsistence. I'm happy I attend such a wonderful University. I have become very active on campus and the people who surround me everyday has greatly helped me expand my horizons.

Categories Comments Dorm Life Freshmen dorms of course are no fun but when you become an upperclassmen there nice.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get to know all of your teachers and make sure they know you. Also stay focused on the school work and really study because the parties will always be there.
In three sentences I think VSU is a great school for high school graduates who did not do well and want a clean start. I also think that VSU is good for people who like small class rooms and want to know there teachers personally. I also think VSU gives you a chance to start getting a feel on what other big universities are about.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food is great and I enjoy eating it everyday you probably will never get tired of it.
Dorm Life I personal don't live on campus because I live not to far away from the campus. Although, usually I'm always on campus. There is a lot of fun activities to do on campus especially with your friends.
Academic Rigor The classes are a little challenging but that makes it a better learning experience. The classes really push you to do your best and the teachers try very hard to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students Some good tips for prospective students is that its still school and you have to do your best in all classes. To me you have to earn you right to go out and have a good time. If you don't make the grades you don't make the party.
In three sentences Virginia State University is a wonderful school to attend. I am a freshmen and I am enjoying every moment at VSU. Its a terrific learning experience and I believe everyone should live there college lives like I am.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students People who like a challenge academically and are basically social butterflies. As a said, there is rarely a dull day at VSU!
Tips for prospective students If you plan to attend VSU just make sure you have the right mindset and self control. With so many things on going on campus throughout the year you will be tempted to skip class to enjoy the festivities so if you have no self control and need someone to make you go to class then VSU isn't the college for you. Professors aren't going to beg you to go to class but your grade will reflect your attendance.
Bang for the buck I don't think VSU is expensive compared to other colleges and universities. I'm an honor student so I receive a scholarship and financial aid but either way the attention that you receive from the professors is worth any amount.
Am enjoying being here I love VSU and encourage all the graduating seniors from my high school to attend. There are all types of organizations and events that occur throughout the year for all types of people. There is rarely ever a dull day on the yard.
Am learning a lot All of my professors at VSU are wonderful! They connect with you on a personal level and work with you to ensure you get the most. If I have problems I can call them or stop by the office and they are almost always available.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you are a student that loves to have a social life, yet have a good education this is great for you. Mostly African-Americans attend this school, but we welcome any and everybody.
Tips for prospective students If you are able to get a car, it would be wise to do so if you are not a fan of walking. If you can't, save up money for gas if you know people that drive and cabs if they are unavailable.
Bang for the buck It may be a little expensive to attend VSU, especially if you're an out-of-state student like myself, but it is all worth it. You will have a great and traditional college experience, as well as earn a great education.
Am enjoying being here I love it here and I'm so glad that I go to VSU! You meet great people here and in a lot of cases, some people become like family to you. I have made some mistakes, but that was all my fault and I am changing that. You just have to be focused here and do not be afraid to ask people for help. A lot of people are willing to help you any way that they can if you're willing to help yourself. I would not trade this experience for the world!
Am learning a lot I have learned so much while being here at VSU. You are able to get to know most of your professors and it is very easy to find help; all you have to do is ask. It is also easy to get distracted by the great party scene but that is up to you and you only. If you can balance your work and social life you will be fine.

Greek Life Not my thing...If you are considering joining an organization do it in your sophmore or junior years.
Clubs and Activities I always did flag football or late night swimming....basketball and spring soccer is offered
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Stepping on the Trojan head is a no no!
Bang for the buck I guess you can say so
What to do for fun For real there is not much in the area...Majority of the time parties and stuff take place in Richmond...the school holds alot of socials and event nights throughout the months.
Food and Dining For the most part the food is ok. The majority of the students prefer Foster, but if you like second and third servings Jones and Gateway cafe is the place to be...Weds. fried chicken night is something to look forward to.
Dorm Life For freshman dorm life is rough, they are strict on visitation. At times the R.A's will treat u as a child not an adult. They are currently building new dorms that are very nice for the upper classmen.
Academic Rigor School work is fairly easy. Most professors provide powerpoints during lectures so if you are not good at or like taking notes, get use to it.
Tips for prospective students Dont be afraid to ask questions if your unsure about something... its i guess bad luck to step on the Trojan heads that painted on the grounds...Make sure you get validated early.

Food and Dining Because we are an HBCU, you would think we would have good food, but it is not always that way--sometimes the food is great, sometimes you will not like it. If you do like it though, it is all-you-can-eat buffet style.
Dorm Life The freshmen dorms are not that great, however if you are an honors student you have a pretty good dorm. The upperclassmen dorms are much nicer and have more appliances.
Academic Rigor Virginia State University is trying to become bigger, which includes better education, a better campus, and more things to get involved in. We are also becoming more technology savvy, which gives us the tools to learn in more ways.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Cops everywhere and see everything.
Greek Life Everywhere, just decide what you want to join or if you just like to watch them.
Clubs and Activities Plenty of them, you will have no problem finding one that fits you. Or just create your own!
Great for these types of students Those who want to meet new people, love to party and socialize. And of course learn!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus DON'T STEP ON THE TROJAN HEADS PAINTED ON THE GROUND AROUND CAMPUS. If you are to, its said that you will stay here for the next 7 years..not a good look.
Bang for the buck take advantage of the cafe! walking around this campus causes you to become hungry really quickly.
What to do for fun PARRRTY! House parties, clubs, block parties, shows, you will find something.
Food and Dining Good ole' soul food, just like grandma makes. You can never go hungry here, unless you miss a swipe. And note: they do not run over.
Dorm Life Everyone is different, so learn how to adapt to others ways and attitudes. Especially if you plan on having a roommate, it is a learning experience for everyone.
Academic Rigor Teachers are extremely laid back, you're grown now and paying to go to school. In other words, your good grades are up to you not the teachers.
Tips for prospective students BE ABLE TO KEEP FOCUS! IF YOU GET DISTRACTED EASILY, THIS IS NOT THE SCHOOL FOR YOU. There is always something going on here, so get involved.
In three sentences This school is a party school, but it also is a academic school as well. There is always something for you to do, when you are not studying and learning. I give them a 7, just because we could lay off the parties just once and awhile.

Clubs and Activities There's over 100 organizations to join. Organizations include: Carribbean Student Association, Studying Abroad, Student Ambassadors, Code Blue (Pep Squad for all Athletic Sports), the Virginia State University Marching Band, Concert Choir. Gospel Choir, and many more.
What to do for fun There are so many socials that happen on campus that are FREE!
Tips for prospective students Well first remember why you came to college, YOUR EDUCATION!!! Go to class and do your work. Procrastination is not the key, you will forget what & when it is due. Please get to know your teachers and advisors, they are responsible for making your schedules and grades. Get involved, join organizations that help you get to know people and have fun.
In three sentences Over the few weeks I've been there I have enjoyed it 100%. There's always something to do to get you involved and have a better understanding about the history of the campus. Besides always having fun, education here is first priority!

Categories Comments Campus Safety From what I understand 98% of the campus is covered by cameras. I feel pretty safe on campus. Plus we have that early warning text email thing in the event something is going down on campus. I of course don't do anything crazy like walk around at night by myself but overall I feel safe.
Clubs and Activities I'm that chick that is ALWAYS asking what's that? or what are they doing? Believe me there's always something to do....and I don't mean studying. Things going on may not be your thing but there's always something going on. Student's just need to get involved and participate.
Bang for the buck My mom is super excited that they have my major, and she didn't have to sell a kidney to pay for it. I think for an in-state student you are truly getting your monies worth!
Food and Dining There are fresh food and overall good choices you can make but hey what do you really expect? It's college food man don't get your hopes up!
Dorm Life I love my dorm....its old and almost what I imagined. There are newer dorms but I'm a freshman and don't live there. Next year I think I may upgrade to the quad living facilities but for now old school dorm life. BTW I have no roommate and its awesome. I'm an early to bed early to rise kinda gal.
Academic Rigor IF you weren't the best student in school that doesn't mean that you won't be the best student here. College is what you make it. If you want to challenge yourself the course are here for that. If you want to be lazy the courses are here for that as well. Find what fits you and success will be there!
Tips for prospective students Make certain you ask questions and please don't pretend that you know EVERYTHING! Really you don't and that's a sure fire way to make certain that you FAIL. Get out and make friends; even if you knew someone previously get out and meet new people!
In three sentences VSU is very quaint and makes the student really feel as though they are among family. It is a little less ethnically diverse than I or my parents would have like but it's small enough to still make you feel welcomed. The staff is very helpful for the most part; if you are willing to ask fro the assistance. Undergraduate success seems to be everyone's goal

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is at it's best here at VSU. Noone, in my opinion ever feels harmed because they have the feeling of good protection.
Greek Life Well as for the Greek life; I'm a freshman so that means no pledging anything until Sophomore year and after i have established a well enough GPA. Virginia State, an HBCU, has many historical influences through their Greek life and the people involved have the upmost respect for everyone that speaks to them.
Clubs and Activities There are too many clubs and activities here NOT to be involved. Every club or organization(s) has a place for everyone. You just have to make the right decisions in balancing school work with extra-curricular activities.
Food and Dining Food and Dining here consists of three places on campus. Jones, the major cafe. Foster, the walk-thru cafe. Or Austin's Grill, the mobile food truck stop. The quality of the food here is amazing. It's almost like food from home. In my opinion the best place to eat out around VSU is the drive-thru restaurant Cook-out
Dorm Life Whether you apply for a single, or double; always make friends in your dorm. Their is always someone who needs help with something. Here at VSU dorm life has been amazing for me. Everyone in (Seward Hall) my dorm is like one big family. That's how most dorms should be.
Academic Rigor Rigor here resembles strength in education. If one has a stable education and exceeds greatly one shall have good strength to start on their own. Strength to be financially sound.
Tips for prospective students Students should always keep their heads on a swivel. Meaning, you should be able to multi-task in between classes. Study every night even if the test is 2 weeks prior. Invest in your own personal color printer and lots of paper. The most important thing you will need throughout your college years will be a laptop.
In three sentences Virginia State is the best place to start off in any future collegiate education. The people and teachers here are down to earth and understand when help is needed. I approve this college to any prospective students.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Go to parties. Join different groups on campus. Play sports
Food and Dining The dining hall serve good food on curtains days. Every Wednesday is fried chicken Wednesday. But sometimes you will want to order out.
Dorm Life Living by yourself away from family is a good experience but it is a lot of responsibilities. You have to wake your own self up, wash your own clothes and clean after yourself. The fresh men's dorms are fairly clean.
Academic Rigor Academics are very important. That's the major reason you in college
Tips for prospective students Don't party every night because its really easy to loose focus in school. Finish assignments a few days before they are do so you can check and double check to make sure everything is good. Always give your best at everything that you do.
In three sentences This campus is great the atmosphere, the other students and the teachers are all friendly. VSU is good for people who want to relax and also get a higher education. The police force on campus make sure that the campus is safe.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is no reason for students to feel unsafe at any time on campus. There are campus security officers and well as campus police officers with call boxes set up around campus.
Greek Life The Divine 9 is offered to students on Virginia State University's campus. There are also fraternities and sororities for those that are in the band as well.
Clubs and Activities On campus, there is an organization for everyone. There are academic organizations, as well as social ones.
Great for these types of students For students that are looking to be surrounded by goal-oriented people, Virginia State University is the place to go.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There aren't any unusual traditions or locations on campus, however, Foster Hall, is the building where students go to relax and see friends in between classes. That isn't a place where one should go if they're not feeling or looking their best.
Bang for the buck I believe that college is what you make it. I do believe that as a student that pays out of state tuition, I do make the most of my experience in Virginia. I am involved in two on-campus performing organizations and my professors are always there when I need them.
What to do for fun There is always something for students to do on campus. There are many on-campus organizations that host forums, socials, bake sales, pageants and award shows.
Food and Dining I've never been a fan of cafeteria food. If you live on campus, there is no opportunity for you to cook. Wal-mart is your friend.
Dorm Life I did not enjoy living in dorms my freshman year. Although it's a great opportunity to make new friends, community showers aren't my thing. People also don't respect normal sleeping hours, but that's college.
Academic Rigor The school of business is one of the best in the country. The Reginald F. Lewis School of Business is internationally accredited. Dr. Mirta Martin does her best to make sure we have the necessary tools to succeed in life after college. We are fortunate to not have to pay for many of our textbooks, however, that means that the school of business had to pay for it. We receive the most money out of any of the other schools on campus. Lastly, the school of business offers an integrated course, which is the premier course of the school.
Tips for prospective students My advice to prospective students is to not get caught up in social life. Parties will always be there when you graduate. Do you want to waste money while in college or be able to spend it freely when you graduate? Your professors aren't there to baby you. It's important to understand that you're no longer in high school and need to take control of your life.
In three sentences I love Virginia State University. It is rich in culture. The professors are diverse and willing to work with students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is extremely safe, or a little too safe in my opinion. The campus has its very own police station and troops of policemen and are on duty 24/7. They keep unwanted locals out and the students in line. You will see them everywhere, but do not be discouraged unless you are a suspect.
Greek Life I'm not a Greek and probably never will be, but I heard and seen the Greeks and they are as close as brothers and sisters. You have to be very dedicated and humble to join a Greek family.
Bang for the buck I love my college. To this day, I have no regrets about my decision. I met great people that I will know and remember for a lifetime. I'm not a regular to the many social events on campus, but I help out anyway I can and I try to take as many opportunities they offer. I have a long way to go, but at least I'm not going it alone, and neither will you.
What to do for fun Every campus has their parties. There are parties organized by the Greeks, parties organized by the student activities committee, and there are local parties around campus. However, their aren't just parties, we have plays, choir performances, talent shows, and the traditional sports events. The list goes on and on.
Food and Dining The food is very good. They always have a different variety of food everyday except for Fried Chicken Wednesday! They have stations where the staff cooks/fixed your plate for you and others that you do it yourself. There is no end to the entrees!
Dorm Life In my hall, personally, I think that they have too many activities going on, but at least the staff is considerate of their students. They have movie nights, seminars, mandatory meeting, and just cool fun activities for students to enjoy. On my campus, you do more than just sleep, eat, and work in your dorm.
Academic Rigor I always have something to do when I am on campus, whether its running errands, checking up on my student and financial aid status or just doing homework. I'm always on the go. It will be tiring at first, but you will get use to your rigorous schedule. I'm not trying to sugarcoat this so you go to college, I'm just sharing my experience with you and give you a heads up on what's to come.
Tips for prospective students There are times when you feel like you are coming up short, but do not be afraid because VSU will do everything it can to make sure that you accomplish your goals. You will have fun and meet people that will be engraved in your life, but your work and future career comes first, so DON'T slip up.
In three sentences A great place to lean and become successful. You will have a sense a pride and dedication when you become a part of the college community and learn about the history of the university. A place where I feel like my future is in the process of being born and I will do anything to make it come to reality.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are police constantly patrolling the campus. Cameras throughout the school.
Greek Life It is an experience for the many people that I know that are in a Fraternity or Sorority. It is a brother/sister hood that lasts a lifetime.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities to choose from based on your interest. Whether that be modeling, dancing, singing, acting, etc.
What to do for fun There are always party promotions within the student lounge. Organizations are always having different events as well.
Food and Dining There two choices for dining in and a fast food place to have your food to go.
Dorm Life Dorm life is an experience that you will never forget. You meet new people everyday with the many lounges within each dorm facility.
Academic Rigor Try to do your best during your freshmen year. It will really catch up to you in your later years if you don't do as well your freshmen year.
Tips for prospective students Staying on campus your freshmen year is a great way to meet new people and network. Wait until your sophomore year before joining an organization to bring your grades up.
In three sentences Virginia State University is a school that I would recommend attending. It is an HBCU. The campus is constantly expanding and improving.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The Campus is pretty safe. Campus Security is plentiful. However, I think they should be doing a little more to keep the locals off campus, especially the ones that come on campus for the sole purpose of causing problems.
What to do for fun At VSU, Petersburg, VA is a small town but I make the best of it. I attend the on-campus sporting events, go to the step shows, fashion shows and the school sponsored events off campus. I also catch the shuttle and go to the movies, out to eat, mall and bowling.
Food and Dining The food and dining facilities are cool. I really can't complain. VSU have a variety of dining facilities and a variety of foods. But we all know, nothing is like your mother's cooking!
Dorm Life Dorm Life for me is pretty cool. I was fortunate to have a SINGLE room and reside in a Suite. I have my OWN room but share a bathroom with one other person. However, that was NOT the case when I first arrived on campus. I had a SINGLE room but was NOT in a suite and shared the bathroom/showers with about 20 other females. That was the worse because not everyone has the same hygiene habits.
Academic Rigor During orientation, it was said that for EVERY credit hour, you should Study 2 hours. At first, I thought that was excessive but I realize to obtain and maintain a 3.0 GPA, you will need to study at least 3 hours per credit hour.
Tips for prospective students My tips for a prospective student is to 1.) help your parents, help you by making the grades so that scholarships and grants are made available to you 2.) recognize that college is what YOU make it and 3.) ENJOY your college years, have FUN but be FOCUSED on the ultimate Goal - obtaining YOUR Degree!
In three sentences Virginia State University was my FIRST choice when looking for universities to attend. I am really glad that I chose VSU to further my education. If I had to rank it based on a scale of 1-10, it would rank 8.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You never have to worry about your safety on campus. With campus police patrolling campus and buildings on a regular basis it is never a thing that you have to worry about your safety.
Greek Life Greek life is everything you would imagine it to be. During big campus events you will always catch all the fraternities and sororities everywhere you turn wearing their colors. Even on a regular day they are out still wearing their paraphernalia.
Clubs and Activities There are many different positive clubs and organizations on campus that you could join. you could also join more than one if you would like, just make sure you keep up with your work. Each and every organization promotes students to have decent grades to join.
Great for these types of students If you view yourself as a very social person that likes to have fun but also get your work done them Virginia State is for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Foster hall is the place to be. It is where all the fraternities and organizations hang out and it is a place where you can always get the inside scoop of what is going on campus.
What to do for fun To have fun at VSU attend the organization events that are held monthly or just go and be social at Foster Hall.
Food and Dining If you are always craving a home cooked meal Jones dining hall and Gateway dining hall are the places to go. It is not exactly like home but it is close enough. They also have dining within Foster hall; which is more like fast food but it also great to eat.
Dorm Life The dormitories are nothing like home but it keeps you from getting that homesick feeling most freshman tend to get their first year; with all your other dorm mates it keeps the year pretty fun and interesting.
Academic Rigor Academically I give this school five stars. They are not there to baby you but they make sure to remind when you begin to slip and when you are succeeding
Tips for prospective students Do not look at the school as just a social place but a academic jump start on your career.
In three sentences Virginia State University is the most academically focused, student friendly, and socially active campus there is. It keeps you focused on your academics while also keeping you social actives with events held in the evening and on weekends. There is not a better place to be where you can get the best of both worlds right here on campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Just don't go asking for trouble. The locals provide most of the problems
Greek Life Greek life is amazing, in the nice weather during block parties or cookouts you will always see them strolling or just simply out together.
Clubs and Activities Join something. Nut my advice is to wait till spring semester when you are settled and informed about the organizations.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Don't step on the Trojan heads. This was the first warning we received, no one usually purposely steps on them until they graduate. Also the plantation ( idk why they call it that ) behind VA hall is a hot spot for some tryna get away from the craziness of the campus.
What to do for fun Go to the socials, open mics, and clubs and always read the posters in your dorm. Another way to stay in the know about events is be social and you will hear about whats going on.
Food and Dining Jones dining hall, which most freshman are close to has okay food. Foster is an in and out type of dining all, but you will get very sick of it. The C store which most bypass their first semester is for a store open from 8 till 2 ( also a fly by eating place ) and then there is gateway dining hall, which is all the way on the other side of the campus, but the food is better than all the other places. Fried chicken Wednesdays will also become your best friend and worst nightmare.
Dorm Life I stayed in a all girls dorm first year. I'm more of your tomboy type of girl so this wasn't too pleasant. You share bathrooms with people who seem like they have no home training. Overall thou, many dorms become like your big immediate family, and if you don't like your room or dorm, you have the opportunity to change them during the roommate change period and residence change period. Be aware that you may have to pay a fee.
Academic Rigor This depends on you honestly. You'll find a challenge if your looking for one. Don't strive for everything to be easy, have the will to learn,
Tips for prospective students 1. When you get confused seek help from your R.A's and teachers, someone is always there to help. 2. Take advantage of the time brackets teachers and the university gives before things such as money or assignments are due. 3. Go to as many social events in the first week as you can, interact with your Trojan fam. 4. The library is your best friend ! especially the private rooms.
In three sentences Virginia State is a great place to study, but if your the type of person to frazzled easy don't come. There is always going to be something that goes wrong, but for the most part you find people who can go through it with you. I love VSU, but its truly not for everyone; If you feel your a Trojan join the fam.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Our campus police does a great job of making sure our campus is safe and secure. All gates on campus close at 6pm and you can only get through the main gate with a VSU ID after that time. They are always driving and walking around monitoring the campus and ensuring our safety. You have nothing to worry about.
Greek Life Divine Nine. They are ALWAYS live and always get love from everyone,
Clubs and Activities There's a club for everyone on campus. And if there's not, you can make one yourself. We have the Divine Nine Fraternities and Sororities on campus as well. Dancing, modeling, singing, community service, honors, art, etc. The choices are endless.
Great for these types of students Outgoing, focused, balanced, social, friendly
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus If you step on any of the Trojan heads, it will take an extra year to graduate!!!
Bang for the buck It depends on what type of education and environment you want honestly. I think it is because I got a internship my freshman year at NASA and finished with a 3.7 while maintaining my social life. It's definitely worth it.
What to do for fun Join a club or organization. Sororities/Fraternities, The Betterment of Brothers & Sisters, modeling orgs, dancing orgs...the list is endless. Also, go to the club! If you don't have a car, VSU provides a free charter bus to the club and back. There's always something to do.
Food and Dining There are 2 dining halls on campus, Jones and Gateway. Personally I think Gateway is better than Jones, but to each its own. There are a couple of spots around campus where you can get food to go like wings, pasta, chicken sandwiches, etc. Overall the food is pretty good though. Oh, I forgot to mention....FRIED CHICKEN WEDNESDAYS!!
Dorm Life For the most part, the dorms are pretty good. A couple freshmen dorms are not the best, but they definitely are not horrible. After your freshman year everything gets better. You can stay in the apartments or get you own room. You can pretty much choose how you want to live.
Academic Rigor I can't really speak for every major because it's all different. But personally, I think it's only as hard as you make it. If you put in the work, no matter how hard the class is, you should come out with an A.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you come with confidence in yourself. Here at VSU the professors are always available when you need them; and if they aren't, they make sure they make themselves available for you. There are so many resources you can utilize to make your academic life easier. Many clubs and organizations to join so there is always somethings to do. So many different things to get involved in, so make sure to keep yourself busy.
In three sentences One of the best HBCUs in the country. Once you become a Trojan, you become a part of a close family at VSU. Definitely a place that strives to build a better world.
