    Tips for prospective students

Apply early for housing and request for a roommate your first year of college. It's a great way to transition with someone else who is it your same situation.

    Bang for the buck

Once you apply and are for sure going here, your tuition will never change if the university decided to up the tuition price

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here because it's only 2 hours from home. There aren't a lot of things to do here but you can make the most of it by going to the Square, Library, and Rec Center.

    Am learning a lot

There are a varity of subjects on campus apply to the different types of people here on campus

Great for these types of students

Great for any student probably, but most likely for those who are used to small-town settings, or want a quieter environment to learn and study in.

    Tips for prospective students

I'd probably get your dorm room or apartment as soon as possible, because housing in Macomb/Western fills up fast, and there are a lot of students living in the dorms. I'd also visit the Scholarship early and often, and apply for any scholarships as soon as possible.

    Bang for the buck

Western is probably one of the most affordable of Illinois' public state schools, and probably in general. They have a tuition lock, so your tuition and even your room and board freezes at the cost of the first year you enroll. Western is the only school in Illinois I think to offer this, and one of the few in the whole country. It is definitely worth taking advantage of.

    Am enjoying being here

Macomb may seem like a boring small town to most people, and well, it pretty much is. But I come from a small town myself, so I guess I'd probably prefer that to a big city any day, and it is only 3 hours away from where I live. There are a lot of student clubs and organizations anyway, and a lot of interesting people (artists, social scientists, authors, etc) come to lecture at Western and attending their talks is always well worth it. If you enjoy a quiet, small town environment, you will love it here. The campus is the perfect place for a nice walk and a plethora of interesting sculptures to look at and has plenty of trees and a beautiful lake to study or relax at. There is also the Union with foodcourts and a Rec Center if you like to work out and stay fit.

    Am learning a lot

I would say that there are many opportunities to learn here at Western, but sometimes I feel like I am not always getting quite the quality education I desire. It is a public state-funded college after all. Although I occaisionally feel like I'm just attending beefed up highschool classes, I also keep in mind that I have very interesting and challenging classes as well, and that I am still only at a Sophomore level. Overall, I think the professors here leave in the student's hands a little more to expand there knowledge of their subjects, which makes sense because students are just as responsible for their education as the professors are. Overall there are a lot of majors to choose from, as well, and plenty of subjects to study. They also have an awesome library.

Great for these types of students

Western Illinois University is a great school for students who are out going, and enjoy a challenge.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to apply early for housing and scholarships.

    Bang for the buck

WIU was the first university in Illinois to freeze tuition for incoming students. But now they have expanded on their great offer to freeze room and board as well. Also they have many scholarship opportunities for students of all grade levels.

    Am enjoying being here

There are many on campus activities and clubs to join in that there is never a dull moment.

    Am learning a lot

Not only does Western Illinois University offer a great deal of programs, but there is also a wide variety of people on campus helping to enhance life experiences.

Great for these types of students

Ready to obtain a great deal of knowledge, have many worthwhile experiences, adjust to college comfortably, and have a great time fulfilling all wishes and needs.

    Tips for prospective students

Only getting ready to start my second semester, all I can advise is: It is worth it to prove to professors that you care and give it all you have. It can only benefit you in the end. Also, get involved with hobbies or groups you can relate to because it brings great and new experiences and friends. Lastly, it is always necessary to have a little fun, but be sure to stay on top of the studies. It is not worth it to party every night and get bad grades. You are in college and paying for a reason!

    Bang for the buck

This university is one of the cheaper in the state and it is amazing because there is still so much offered. Two of my favorite aspects, included in the costs, are the recreation center that offers fitness classes from cardio to weight lifting to yoga and also has an entire gym of equipment, three floors, an indoor pool and hot tub, basketball courts, a floor of ellipticals and stationery bikes, and so much more. The second is the food options that have rarely dissapointed me. I especially love the fact that there are vegetarian, which I am, options everyday and sometimes even vegan.

    Am enjoying being here

I do not think I could have picked a better fit for a college. My main reason for choice was that it is one of only two in the state that offers my major, Music Therapy. The other was that it was closer to home than the other option, yet still far enough to get homesick. All of the other great things have just come along while I have attended. I love the campus size because it is very big for me, coming from a high school class of 71, but still small enough to create many friendships and feel a sense of belonging. My farthest walk from my dormitory last semester was only about ten minutes and they also offer a bus system but I choose to be green. Like I said before, the faculty, food, and exercise options are great. Besides academics and daily living, there is so much to do with all the possible people to meet, movie theaters, restaurants, music, and there are so many clubs. I joined the Chi Omega fraternity and am involved with the campus recyclers, the Green Energy Team. It is definitely not hard to keep busy!

    Am learning a lot

I have learned more in one semester than I feel like I have learned during all four years of high school. At first it was a real struggle trying to adjust from the high school atmosphere of getting straight As with little to no effort, to actually having to deal with failure from time to time. It is really a satisfying feeling to reach an earned grade that so much hard work is put into. I could not ask for more knowledgeable and enjoyable to be around faculty either. They keep me motivated to do well and they are extremely supportive when failure does occur and only try to suggest ways for it to be avoided in the future. They offer a ton of help, time, and resources.

Great for these types of students

every type of student is great here.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is labeled as a party school but only you can make that decision. Everyone has a choice to either party every night or take time to actually study. It is a great atmosphere no matter what type of personality you have and there are tons of things to do, only if you feel up to it though. It being your freshman year, you will not know what to do with all your time. Also make sure you apply for scholarships and housing early, it will only benefit you. I got the best dorm building my freshman year all because i applied for it more than six months beforehand.

    Bang for the buck

My time at Western has definitely been worth the money so far. If your from a big suburb, there are for sure some things you have to get accustomed to. You get a great education for a fair price concerning some other schools.

    Am enjoying being here

Academic wise i am enjoying Western. the professors are great and really personable if your not in a class of 100. It's really important that you take the time to actually email your professors if you have any questions regarding the class. Trust me they want you to. It is better to ask the professors about the material your confused on or you'll regret it when it comes to exam time.

    Am learning a lot

When I first started my classes i wasn't sure what to expect. i had never been in a lecture hall before and it was definetely interesting trying t come up with unique ways to make my notes organized. it was very challenging when it came to a few exams, in high school i was always good at memorizing material. However in my Zoology class my first semester at Western i realized i had to do much more than just study specifc definitions. Through all my unique classes i learned material that was mostly interesting to me and each professor tried their hardest in their individual ways to make the class fun for the students.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved and make friends. When you move in, keep your door open and meet the people on your floor. You may not be best friends with everyone, but at least get to know as many people as you can.

The faculty for my specific major (music) is amazing. They are always pushing me to do my best and are very supportive and helpful.

    Campus Safety

There is a student escort service on campus, especially for those late nights at the library where you just want to be safe and not walk home alone. However, I feel campus is very safe with our campus security and patrol that are always out and don't feel a need to use this service.

    Greek Life

There is a ton of academic and social fraternities and sororities on campus. Whichever you decide to join they are a great bunch of individuals who help your transition into college much smoother and more enjoyable. Plus it never hurts to build your resume with highly looked at organizations!

    Clubs and Activities

Scuba club, MMA club, or trivia at the library. Western seriously has it all and if your interested in it and we don't have it (highly unlikely) start your own club up! Western is great for their clubs and activities to have leadership roles in.

Great for these types of students

EVERYONE! Campus is diverse with so many different types of individuals, from rural, suburban, & urban and everyone gets along. It's great coming from Chicago and learning about someone growing up in the south on a farm.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

5th floor in the library is the complete and utter silence floor. You don't even hear a pin drop! It is said that some of the floors of the dorms are haunted which is always a scare around Halloween to hear about. Haunted Higgins is a great haunted house on the very top floor of the residence hall around Halloween that is a great charity event that provides you with a scream while walking through. Chicks in The Square the best chicken fingers they call lips you'll get anywhere dipped in their original famous sauce!

    Bang for the buck

With being a great affordable state school you do earn a great education for a reasonable tuition price that is locked in once you start your freshman year! There are several book stores that offer great prices on text books so you don't empty your pocket out immensely.

    What to do for fun

Enjoy a walk around our beautiful campus. Go to the recreational center to enjoy basketball, volleyball, raquet ball, running, weight lifting, swimming, or the sauna to relax. The recreational center always has a bunch of intramural sports happening from tennis, flag football, softball, volleyball, or even a paper airplane toss! Visit The Square which is our downtown area to look at the cool shops or the chow down on some amazing food!

    Food and Dining

The cafeterias always have something new and exciting to be served in their clean, nutritional, and affordable atmosphere. You have convenient stores in multiple spots on campus for a late night snack. In our union we hold a Sbarros pizza, burger king, and bagel shop. Swipe your WIU student card at ease to pay for everything you pay off your meal plan or pay with cash. You also can find great student jobs at these locations for the extra pocket cash.

    Dorm Life

The residence hall rooms themselves are a great size where two people can live comfortably and four if you are in a suit. Some are co-ed (by floors) and very nice to have the first couple floors for honors students. The RAs are always great individuals who upkeep rules and regulations.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are at a great size where they are not to big to not have the professions individual attention and not to small so you can seem familiar faces in them. Homework has been moderate at all my years here, and tests/exams are always announced and I have been well prepared for with reviews, study sessions, and with graduate assistant help.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a campus visit! We have beautiful residence halls of different statures, an enormous beneficial recreational center. A 5 story library with immense information for papers and helpful librarians. So many intramural sports that are fun to grab some friends and involve yourself in.

    In three sentences

Immediately stepping foot on campus I have transformed into a better individual with a higher education. Westerns motto is higher values in higher education, they apply this very well with their amazing professors, numerous extracurricular activities, and multiple job positions on campus that can better you as a student. Western is a great size school, with a diverse amount of colleagues who make the college transfer experience easier!

This college is great for any outgoing students. However, even if you're conservative, this college may also be for you. Overall, anyone is a fit for Western.

    Tips for prospective students

When you're a freshman choosing classes, make sure you do it the second you are able. Otherwise you will most likely not get the class you want or need. Also, when applying for housing, don't wait.

    Bang for the buck

This public university is quite cheap in price, yet every thing about the college is anything but.

Great for these types of students

Great for anyone. People will always have their own cliques, but everyone basically gets along here.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not get engulfed by the party scene. Your grades will slip fast and your money will be all gone. STUDY. In high school you could get away without studying for tests. NOT HERE ... it is time to grow up and realize you are at college and not in high school anymore. Find a job. It might take away from some studying, but it will occupy your time and put money in your pocket that you will be wishing you had during the semester. Get involved. There is sooo many different clubs and activities to get involved with and they are a lot of fun.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other schools this is a very reasonably priced school and the education is very good. What this school gets you on is the money spent on dining. Food is probably what i spend all of my money on. I feel like I am constantly putting more and more money on my ID (what you use to buy food from the cafeteria) just for food. There is however a transportation system (buses) that are extremely useful and are included in the package. Not only do these buses travel to the dorms and to the buildings where classes are taught but these buses even take students to the stores and other places that are needed but without some sort of transportation are too far to walk. The buses are very quick too; during school days you will not wait more than 8 minutes for the next bus. There is also a recreation center that is AMAZING and it is also already included. All you do is walk in and swipe your ID and you can lift free weights, play basket ball, run, workout on machines, and attend fitness classes that work you out.

    Am enjoying being here

It might be in the middle of no where, but you would be surprised how much there really is to do. Even inside the dorms there are ping pong tables, pool tables, and air hockey machines. There are also a lot of restaurants and a few parks around that are very nice. For me, it is also the perfect distance from home (4 hour drive) where I am not smothered by family, but also where, if needed, I could go home or they come here. Of course there is also the party scene like at every college and personally i have taken that route, but I make it my top priority to keep up with class. I am here to get an education. Not party. As long as you can balance it out, you should be fine. I like it so much here because it is possible to get a good education while still enjoying myself.

    Am learning a lot

To be honest, it all depends on the professor and the way you learn/remember things. A nice amount of teachers here are foreign and have accents. They are still very good teachers, but sometimes are hard to understand. Power points come in very handy. A lot of teachers use them and are very well organized but there are the few that don't. I am actually surprised by how much I have learned. I thought that with all these different classes that I would not be able to learn it all and remember it, but the way some classes are taught are extremely easy to follow and learn from.

    Campus Safety

Campus is very safe. HOWEVER, if you do attend here, be careful on Q lot at night.

    Greek Life

Not as many Greeks. I think there are like 3 for girls and 3 for guys.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs on campus.

Great for these types of students

Who doesn't want to go to a huge school, but not a small one either.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

They spray paint Rocky almost everyday.

    Bang for the buck

    What to do for fun

They have a few activities on campus. But I personally is not impressed.

    Food and Dining

The food during first semester was better than this semester. I eat at Burger King often. We have a coffee and pizza place outside the cafeterias. We also have Dividends, which is like a coffee spot. They have hot dogs, nachos, walking tacos, and they sever Starbucks coffee.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is OK. The rooms are decent.

    Academic Rigor

They offer a lot of tutoring.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early. I would highly recommend a campus visit.

    In three sentences

I am pleased with WIU. The campus is OK. The town that it's in doesn't have much to offer.

    Campus Safety

We have the Office of Public Safety on campus and our campus police force. Also, if you ever need an escort home, or across campus for any reason, you can call them and they are happy to oblige. Campus is well lit at night, though it is never advised walking through the large visitor's lot next to the gym by yourself at night.

    Greek Life

We have 20 fraternities and 9 sororities on campus. Some are social, others are professional groups. The state of Illinois has a no hazing policy and Western is no secret exception to this. In my time here, I've never heard of any cases against a Greek organization.

    Clubs and Activities

So many to choose from: Marching band, Equine Club, any sport you can think of, Greek life, Student Government, volunteer organizations, and if there is something that you want to do, and we don't already have an organization for it, you can create one yourself!

Great for these types of students

People who come from a big city and need to slow things down a little; people who want the feel of a larger school while having smaller class sizes; people who want a less expensive education; and people who might just want the traditional college experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The best kept secret on campus: the Prairie Lounge in the Union. Full of couches and comfy chairs, not too many people pay attention to this nook and during the lunch rush, it can be a nice getaway from the noise and the crowd. Campus also has a Disk Golf course.

    Bang for the buck

Western is a great school for a great price. I feel confident that I will not be wallowing in student debt after graduation. Also, if you rent your books, which the University bookstore allows, it makes the headache of trying to buy and sell books easier and cheaper!

    What to do for fun

In the Union, we have billiards, arcade games, bowling, a multipurpose theater. Along with the regularly scheduled clubs and campus extra curricular, Macomb has movie theaters, mini golf, rollerskating, parks with camping and fishing ponds, and a plethora of restaurants; chain and local.

    Food and Dining

We have four dining areas: Bay/Hen, Thompson, Grote for the dinning halls and we have the Union with restaurants. Each location has a Convenience store for more grocery type purchases. The food is good and it is cheap, and you DO NOT have to cook for yourself! You really can't beat it.

    Dorm Life

Yes, you'll get the 2 am fire alarm; yes you'll get those kids coming back from the bar at 1 in the morning from the bar on a Saturday night; yes you'll make new friend, yes you'll get involved with your floor, yes you'll learn all about campus activities through fliers and promotions held in the lobby; no you won't have to clean your own bathroom; no you won't have to cook your own meals; YES you'll appreciate the experience of dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

The lower division classes are pretty much a breeze if you go to class and don't sleep away your first semester. Upper division pushes you sometimes, but due to the smaller class sizes, you get to know your peers and your professors and it makes it so much easier to ask questions.

    Tips for prospective students

Live in the dorms for at least a year. I met so many people and found so much to do just by walking through the lobby. Also, don't be afraid to get involved. If there is something you're interested in doing, but you don't know anyone else involved, push your anxiety aside and step up. Don't be one of those students who just goes to school and back to their dorms or apartments; experience collage.

    In three sentences

The size of this university makes me feel like I'm at a big school with the feeling of still being in a small town, like where I grew up. This school also has a lot of great extra curricular activities and groups to get involved with. The Spencer Student Center is a beautiful rec and since its fees are included in our tuition, working out there is a breeze!

There is a club for EVERYONE. If there isn't a club that catches your interest you can take it to the board and get it approved, this year we just got a paintball club.

    Law Enforcement Students

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We are a haunted campus, the English building is haunted and a few of the dorms.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life at Western Illinois University is great. The dorms are very nice! They make sure that the temperature is going to stay hot or cold before they will change the temperature. They are very close to the main buildings on campus.

    Academic Rigor

The plus minus system that Western Illinois University uses is great. The plus minus system allows for students to be flexible. One extra point can push a student up to a higher grade.

    Tips for prospective students

Join many clubs and get active! Getting involved will help prospective students make friends, and learn the campus faster.

    Campus Safety

There are numerous crimes on campus, but the Campus Police do a good job keeping everyone safe. There are numerous emergency stations around campus as well.

    Clubs and Activities

We have bars in Macomb but that's about it.

Great for these types of students

Party students. Either that or law enforcement students. The program for law enforcement is one of the best in the Midwest.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Wheeler Block Party. It's a party run by the students. It usually ends up becoming a riot though, so the city tries to stop it every year.

    Bang for the buck

Western is expensive, but not as bad as other schools. They do have pretty good academics overall.

    What to do for fun

There are no real options for fun. The biggest hobby of most students is drinking. There are a ton of bars in town and a lot of students get fake ID's and take advantage of it. Big part school.

    Food and Dining

Sodexo is the catering company. They are pretty awful. Food is not all that great and it is expensive.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not well maintained. They are expensive to live in and are small. The experience you have is dependent mostly upon who else lives on your floor with you.

    Academic Rigor

The classes for the most part are good. I learned a lot from them. The professors, for the most part, are very helpful and knowledgeable.

    Tips for prospective students

Advocate for yourself and budget your money. Do not spend recklessly as the University will take any money they can get from you.

    In three sentences

The parking here sucks. The university doesn't treat students as individuals. Everything is overpriced.

    Campus Safety

It really depends on the weekend. I've had no trouble since I've been here but like I said it really depends.

    Greek Life

I would say join the sorority or frats. Im not in one but you get to know a lot of people from doing so, and they are a big thing here at WIU.

    Clubs and Activities

They have a ton of clubs and wide vast variety of different things from: Tennis to Zombie. They have a lot of intramurals here as well.

Great for these types of students

If you love clubs, trust me they have so many clubs here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only tradition is painting rocky the dog by the football field. And homecoming.

    Bang for the buck

The school is okay, its just that its stuck in the middle of nowhere. The only plus is that its 4 hours away from Chicago and about 1-2 hours away from Peoria. and 2 hours away from STL.

    What to do for fun

The best thing to do for fun here at WIU-Macomb, is go to Wal-Mart and go party, as well as the games.

    Food and Dining

The food here is not good I blame the provider, which is Sodexo. I do not like the food they give to us students. So I prefer not to eat on campus.

    Dorm Life

For my freshman and sophomore year I lived in the regular dorms, it wasn't very good only because you shared a bathroom with 30 other girls and other people they have over, and it becomes very disgusting really quickly. And they don't clean the bathrooms on the weekend. Also, I didn't like the fact you could hear the cars going off in the morn. But also you would have a lot of people being loud at like 2 am, which was very annoying. Junior year, so far is good Im in the suites so I have to clean my own bathroom but the good thing is, is that Im sharing it with only 2 other people, and I am able to control the air conditioning.

    Academic Rigor

They pile a lot on you during the beginning and the end of the school year, but you especially have to watch out before your holiday breaks. You can have many tests the same day, sometimes hard to keep up with.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class, and be on time not at exactly but atleast 15-10 minutes early, because if you don't they can close and lock the door and you won't be able to come to class.. Study would be a great one, because they pile a lot on you and you have random tests and quizzes all the time. But also get to know your teachers because it helps for references as well as they get to know who you are and they can help you more into depth if they get to know you and know your learning level.

    In three sentences

To me Western Illinois would rate for student activities as a 6, because there is really nothing to do here. I would rate the academics possibly an 8, good teaching so far, but then it all depends on your teaching and their style The University as a whole I would rate them about a 7, which is average.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is awesome at Western Illinois University. They have an alert system that sends a text to a students phone to let them know of any problems on the campus. They also have blue security lights around campus to pull in case of an emergency and campus security will come right away.

    Greek Life

Many students seem to get involved in Greek life at Western Illinois. There are many sorority's and fraternity's that are offered. The sorority's and fraternity's have Greek week in the fall and spring to get students to check them out and invite them to join.

    Clubs and Activities

Western Illinois University has any club or activity that a person can think of. If they don't have a certain club or activity a student wants to get involved in they can get a waiver of 10 or more people who is interested and get it authorized by the school and it will become a club or activity.

Great for these types of students

Western Illinois University is great for any type of student from any background, culture and race. Western Illinois welcomes anyone and everyone.

    Bang for the buck

All of the money that students put into college is definitely worth it at Western Illinois University because it is a wonderful campus and everyone is friendly has a very welcoming attitude.

    What to do for fun

For fun, students can get involved in Greek life, sports, and intramural activities. There is also the student rec center that offers many classes to take along with a swimming pool. Even though Western Illinois University is in a small town, the students find activities to keep them occupied that is fun and gets them involved.

    Food and Dining

Most of the dorms consist of food and dining. When students first arrive to campus coming back from the summer the food is delicious and very enjoyable but after awhile the food seems to be the same. Even though they cafeterias seem to have the same food, the dining area is very clean.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is so much fun and the campus offers many living dormitories. The rooms are spacious compared to other colleges and very clean. Also the dorms have activities for the students living in them which helps the students to get involved.

    Academic Rigor

During the year 2011-2012 Western Illinois University has had a low academic rate. Besides the ratings i believe that if a student is serious about their academics they will do just fine. The professors are great and it is up to the student on what kind of grades they would like to obtain.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for prospective students would be to know where all of your classes are ahead of time even though it is a smaller campus it is still helpful and easy to get lost. I also would recommend that they meet other students on campus and get involved in the activities on campus that Western Illinois offers. Another tip that i would recommend would be that students ask their professors questions because the more knowledge you have about the topics in you classes, the better you will understand the professor and the topics.

    In three sentences

I would give Western Illinois a 10 on a scale of 10. The campus makes students feel like they are home and welcomes in students with open arms. I would recommend this college to any student but they just have to be willing to get use to a smaller town if they are from a big city.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a few dance teams, that are all very good and entertaining. There is a school newspaper and radio station, which I am a part of both. Also, there are various club sport teams, (hockey, rugby, volleyball, etc.)

Great for these types of students

This school is great for people who love to get involved, because there are so many things to do, and so many clubs that get started.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Purple Haze group at athletic events really gets the crowd going. Also, the Homecoming festivities are really fun and brings a sense of togetherness around campus.

    Bang for the buck

People around campus really are friendly. Athletic events are the best because of the spirit of the crowd. The fact that we can be a small crowd compared to larger schools, and still get the arena/stadium rocking is amazing.

    What to do for fun

The Recreation Center is a very common place to hang out, work out, or get a game of basketball in. Also, there are many parties on the weekends, all of the people who rent out houses around campus are very friendly.

    Food and Dining

While there are many options in the dining areas around campus, they can tend to get repetitive. However, there are many fast food areas around, and on campus, mainly in the Student Union.

    Dorm Life

The dorms on campus are very nice, with many useful facilities within the building, like convenience stores, lounge areas, and a computer lab. Also, if there is not a cafeteria in one specific dorm, there is one not more than 25 feet away.

    Academic Rigor

All of the classes will offer a challenge to students, with professors who give in-depth information on the topics being discussed, some who even work or have worked in that field.

    Tips for prospective students

Take time early in the year to get acclimated with the campus. While it is imperative to stay on top of your studies, college provides opportunities to have fun, so take advantage of them.

    In three sentences

This is a very good school, which provides a comfortable setting to learn. All of the academic buildings are fairly close to each other, which is a definite plus, and there are many different useful facilities on campus. What to do for fun

Between organizational events like bowling or ice skating, intramural sports like basketball, soccer, and volleyball, or the movie theaters and parks close to campus, there are so many things to choose from. Some times, student groups host movie nights, we have celebrities performers and comedians too! WIU definitely has more than your average school's selection of fun things to do when you can spare a minute from studying!

    Food and Dining

There are four different dining halls on campus, each with different selections to choose from. And if that isn't enough for you, Macomb itself has tons of restaurants close to the campus. Try not to eat too much!

    Dorm Life

Each of the residence halls are accommodating and each offer their own individualized living style. There are apartment-style halls, traditional halls, and even suite-style halls designed for transfer students when already had their first experiences in residential living.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are engaging, but the knowledge you gain can be instrumental for you later on as each semester builds into the next. You have to work hard to succeed and it's brings a good overall feeling when you've finished.

    Tips for prospective students

Have an open mind when you're visiting schools. Western can seem a little bland at first sight, but once you're here there are so many things for you to do! The most important thing is to prioritize why you are in school in the first place. The professors can only push you so much and it's easy to get lose in all the great things about being a college student, so you have to decide to go out and get your diploma.

    In three sentences

Western has a great staff that is there for you and can help open so many doors and opportunities for its students. Transfer students like me are welcome and they are one of the few schools that accept most of your credits. The campus is close-nit and with tons of different groups and organizations on campus, there's something for everyone to get involved and belong to!

    Campus Safety

We live in a town with three police departments, OPS for WIU, the police department of Macomb, and the State Police. At night walking through Q-lot can be rough and some people have been mugged or stabbed, but OPS offers Escort Services for late night safety. Call a head and get a ride for free if you feel that your life will be threatened. There is also an emergency alert system that notifies via Email, and cell phone if something happens during the day. After the NIU Valentines day shooting, WIU texts, calls, and emails regularly every semester, testing its emergency services. There are also Blue Beacon lights that have an emergency signal that notifies policemen in the area to report to that specific light to whomever pressed the button.

    Greek Life

There are 10 Fraternities and 5 sororities on campus. I would suggest going to every house to meet the members and see if you are a fit for their house. Rush weeks are the Second week of the semester and the sororities have to go through Formal Recruitment, where they required to visit every house and rank the houses they like better. I feel this is more of a popularity contest than recruitment. As for the Fraternities, most follow their friends and they have the same people coming into their house because they want people just like them to carry on their traditions. Theta Kappa Epsilon gives a bid to everyone, Theta Xi just got a new house and they stick to themselves. AGR and AGS are agricultural fraternities and most of their members have pick up trucks. Sigma Chi does a great job of sticking to their values and recruiting members of different temperaments, talents, and convictions and builds members based on friendship, justice, and learning.

    Clubs and Activities

Intramural Sports run all year long and apart from the officiating staff not being knowledgeable about the sports they are reffing, they are a great way to continue hobbies and sports with other students on campus.

Great for these types of students

If you do not drink, there are many things you can do for free without drinking and spending money. There is a large field used for softball and football intramurals and they are open to the public. There is a Great Campus Recreation Facility, including weight room, cardio machines, indoor track, racquetball courts, basketball courts, suana, swimming pool, and group fitness classes that are all free.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Bring Tailgating for the football games back. No one goes to the games anymore because the team has not had a winning season in years. Support the team, they will do better.

    Bang for the buck

There is a coupon book passed out at the beginning of the year called Campus Special. These coupons offer great deals for the students to save money on various fast food companies as well as other services such as oil changes.

    What to do for fun

There are two bowling alleys, one on Adams called Diggers City Bowl and the other one is in the basement of the Union. A hidden gem that most people don't know about unless they have cars, there is a Macomb park district facility called Ball Fore that is a littler farther from campus, but it has Mini Golf, Batting Cages, Volleyball and Basketball courts, and a driving range. They also freeze a rink in the winter for ice skating. On your way to Ball Fore, look past the closed China Buffet for Skateland. Skateland is a giant warehouse with an inline skating rink, arcade games, and out door go-karts. There is a movie Theater with 6 theaters next door to the K-mart. If you enjoy playing disc golf, there are two courses in the town of Macomb. One is on 67 at Everly park and is a 18 hole course. The other is on the South part of the WIU campus on Adams, next to Lincoln Washington Residence Halls and the across from the Sigma Chi Fraternity house. There are 11 bars in this town of 20,000 and as long as you are of age, I would recommend the Change of Pace bar because it has an outdoor patio, cheap beer, and good food for Friday Happy hour.

    Food and Dining

Sodexo is the distribution provider for all the food and drinks that are sold within the three cafeterias and union on campus. The Union has three restaurants, Sbarro, Burger King, and a Deli/ Bagel shop that also sells coffee. All the food is A la Carte and can be purchased using your student ID. If you run out of food, you can always replace funds on the STARS website and that money will just be billed to your student account. There is also a coffee/ snack shop in the Stipes Building, next to the library, and offers food as well as drinks and snacks. Vending machines are in every building on campus and can only be used with Rocky Bucks, which is money that is pre-paid. There is a variety of food, always providing burgers fries pizzas and sandwiches. There is a salad bar that is always open and costs more than the pizza. The healthier the foods, the more expensive your bill becomes. If you eat a lot, then plan on getting a Plus 2 plan when you are registering for your Meal Plan.

    Dorm Life

At Western Illinois, these are referred to as Residence Halls. They are currently renovating multiple Residence Halls at WIU because most of them were built in the 1970's and were not built to last. The biggest downfall of the Residence Halls is the inconsistent temperature control in the rooms. WIU will not turn on Air Conditioning until June, leaving the spring semester finals to be dreadfully hot. The Resident Advisers, or RA's do a great job of holding educational meetings for the students to attend and see what the town and university have to offer. If there is a problem with roommates or others on the floor, the office of Student Development works well with the students to accommodate their needs. Most incoming Freshmen are excited to experience college in the only way they have seen, by drinking. Office of Public Safety makes regular rounds on the weekends down the halls of the buildings and will not be afraid to look into open rooms. Most of the Residence Halls are Dry meaning alcohol cannot be brought into the building, this means even empty bottles will result in a fine or violation. If there are any damages on your floor, you and everyone else will be fined, I would advice working together with the other floormates to ensure that does not happen.

    Academic Rigor

The problem with academics is that all of the professors have their own way of setting up a class. After the new grading scale policy including a plus and minus system, students have to work harder to maintain their GPA and have no chance of receiving an A+. Getting a C- from a professor is now considered failing. However, there is still a problem with getting feedback from teachers. Depending on the department, most students have encountered difficulties meeting with professors and understanding them because of their accents and their teaching styles. Other professors are very flexible and work with you to help you succeed. As for attendance policies, they can make or break a grade and do not show progress of a student comprehending material. The attendance policies are up to the individual professors discretion and most will recognize that attendance is not important as being able to complete work thoroughly as well as receive high marks on their tests. There is a lack of appreciation from the University towards their staff of teachers, and have sent many away or have selected incompetent teachers which hinders students' abilities to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure you know what it is you would like to do, and take your general education classes early to get your Grade Point Average up before you declare. Focus on school first and make it a priority during the week.

    In three sentences

Western Illinois has been making multiple changes within the past five years to eliminate the notorious stigma of WIU being just a Party School. The town has been enforcing laws that are unconstitutional and that violate the rights of the residents in order to prevent extravagant parties. If they spent more money to fixing up the the buildings and residents halls instead of paying millions of dollars promoting on billboards, the retention rate of students returning a second year would not be declining.

Western is great for any type of student really. Overall Western is a great place to enhance and enrich any student's thirst for knowledge.

You feel a sense of independence when your living the dorm life which is far more different than living at home with parents.

    Academic Rigor

As far as classes concerning this issue, I would definitely have to say they vary greatly. Some classes are of 100 students where some are of the least 22. So far my classes have been great. Each is not overwhelming big or completely small, they're just right if you ask me, It's fine to have all classes 25-40 students, but to me you lose that college feel so that's why I don't mind having class in a big lecture hall. There are many things on campus ready to help you academic wise like study sessions, the writing centers, graduate assistants helping in each field of study, etc.

    Tips for prospective students

Becoming a college student will be one of the best moves yet especially if you come to Western. It's nice and affordable. Food and Dining

There are many different place on campus you can eat. There is a dinning hall in or around each campus hall. The dining halls each have great different variety of foods, including a convenience store with lots of food for your fridges. There are also restaurants in the union hall, such as Burger King and Sbarro.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is really great at WIU. The floor you live on does not just become your floor, but a community and soon a family. Dorm life gives you the opportunity to become apart of the university by participating in campus activities.

    Academic Rigor

Each class and professor is different. Some classes have you wrote no papers and some require a paper due each week. At the end of semesters is when most projects are due. It could be nine 3 page papers to 1 ten page paper.

    Tips for prospective students

A few tips I have for students is to be ready to manage your time. Your studies should always be first. The best way to study is to go to library and sit there for hours. Either go in a group or with a few friends. It also helps to be by yourself.

    In three sentences

Western Illinois is a great school for students who want that college experience. There are great people, from students to teachers. There is always someone there for you if you ever need anything.

    In three sentences

I love Western, it's such a fun place with a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, they do let almost anyone in, so be careful who you surround yourself with. If I could go back, I'd choose a more prestigious school with people who are more academically focused.

FAR too many rapes and thefts. I feel very unsafe on campus at night and feel that I can't even go to the bathroom without locking my dorm room. However, the feeling is the opposite during the day. Western has a very warm and inviting atmosphere.

    What to do for fun

Oh, everything! Westerns takes great pains to provide wholesome entertainment. Concerts, magicians, circuses, plays, musicals, comedians, spa nights, you name it and someone has planned it on campus.

    Food and Dining

Hit or miss. Some entrees I find myself waiting impatiently for, and others I wish I hadn't wasted the money on. There is a grand selection of junk food, though. Very few healthy choices. Fruit is always under or over ripe.

    Dorm Life

My dorm was fantastic. Quiet at night, friendly during the day, and we really became a big family. Other dorms, however, are loud and full of drunken students returning in the middle of the night when you're trying to sleep. It depends on how close you are to the frat and sorority roads.

    Academic Rigor

It's really 50/50. Some classes are a joke, some are impossible to succeed in. It depends entirely on what kind of student you are and what your major is.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest Western if you are on a tight budget but still want the full college experience with memories to last a lifetime.

    In three sentences

I really enjoy the classes and the professors as well as campus in general. However, I feel that the drunken parties that occur on a regular basis undermine the value of my degree in the eyes of employers and grad schools. Campus safety is always a number one priority for both campuses.

The Macomb campus does offer 20 fraternities and 9 sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

Western has many clubs at the Macomb campus which include: Archery Club, Men's Bowling Club, Wrestling Club, and many more.

Great for these types of students

Some thing great for students trying to earn a degree from Western is their cost guarantee. If a student is accepted and their tuition is a specific price, that price will stay the same throughout their remaining years; even if tuition prices go up the following year after that.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Although the QC campus might not have many traditions, the Macomb campus is full of many different traditions, whether they be block parties, or initiating freshmen.

    Bang for the buck

The QC campus is a new campus and it has top tier technology. Class rooms are new and all the equipment used is brand new, ranging from Dell computers, to Mac computers. Also, the QC campus is very local which means that many different companies around the area have allowed students to use some of their equipment as well.

    What to do for fun

Being that the campus is small, there aren't many activities people can do. The Macomb campus does offer sports programs that people could participate in their spare time. Both campuses do offer various clubs in which people get together and discuss topics of which their club is specified to focus on.

    Food and Dining

The QC campus does have a lounge area in which people may bring their food and/or buy some from the concession. Since the lounge area is near the river side of the building, eating and enjoying an amazing Mississippi River is always an enjoyable time.

    Dorm Life

    Campus Safety

The campus police are everywhere. You will never feel unsafe on this campus. A lot of the different parts or activities have plenty of police there. You will always see them around even when its during the school hours. You will definitely see them in your dorms as well. They take things that happen in your dorms very serious here which is great.

    What to do for fun

Now thats the only down side of this campus. If you come from a small city then you will transition to this city very easily. If you come from a city thats big then it may take a little longer for you. There is only Wal-Mart and a little JcPenneys out here and thats about it. Most of the major shopping centers are like an hour away. If you have a car then that won't be a problem. If not then you may be visiting home sooner than you thought.

The food here is good. You have a big variety to chose from when in the dining hall. They change their menu every day. You are able to go to any of the other dorm building and eat in their dining hall as well. Each dining hall has a different menu every day. The dining halls are always busy. Even if food isn't being served you will still see a lot of students in there just socializing.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is great. The RA'S are great here. This year so far my floor has been getting along with each other. Most of the girls all have the same major or close to so a lot of times you may find a group of girls in the lounge studying together. You become a family with the other people on your floor. Its great.

    Academic Rigor

The academic is definitely a challenge in the beginning. Mainly because you don't have others around you like your parents telling you to do your homework and check your email. You have to stay on your homework especially if you have a lot of classes. Its best to take a little more than your required classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit Western Illinois University before you actually apply here. Its best to know what you want and see if the school has that. You should come with another friend who is also getting ready to go into college. Try to visit on an a actual school day so you can see how the campus is when is its session. That way you will be able to ask questions to any of the students you see walking around and riding the bus to classes.

There are 52 emergency poles that are around campus that, if pushed, alert OPS there is an emergency and they show up to that location within one minute of the button being pushed. There are also 4 different police operations around campus including campus police, Macomb police, county police and state troopers that are all located in Macomb.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a multitude of clubs that a student can join. They range from intramural sports to fashion club.

    What to do for fun

There are always activities for students on campus and different organizations and clubs. There are also activities to do in town like bowling and going to a movie. If you are of age there are a few dance clubs and bars in town.

    Food and Dining

The food is great. It is a little overpriced but it is not bad. The food here is a lot better than most schools and some meals even feel like they are homemade.

    Dorm Life

There is always something to do with your floor mates. The RA's are nice and understanding. The dorms themselves are nice some are more modern than others but still nice in there own ways and not too small.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers are always changeling you to do the best that you can with out overwhelming you.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking at this college make sure you ask as many questions as you can. The faculty and staff are here to answer them and if the do not know the answer they will find it for you and get back to you with the answer as soon as they can.

    In three sentences

This University has all of the basic needs for students living on and off campus. There are activities that appeal to different students and a multitude of clubs and organizations for all types of students. The dining plan and food is all great and some meals feel like they are home cooked meals.

Super safe, well lit, and have blue emergency lights placed all around campus. Also, there is campus police and an escort service that will walk you anywhere on campus if you don't feel safe.

    Greek Life

Not personally involved in any sororities but there are plenty of sororities and fraternities to choose from.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs on campus, and if you don't find one that you like, you can create a new one.

    What to do for fun

There are over 200 clubs I believe and plenty of on campus activities throughout the year. Homecoming week is especially fun, there are homecoming activities throughout the entire week.

    Food and Dining

Personally, I don't like the food all that much. They boast about cheap, healthy food on their website, but it's really expensive and not that healthy at all. Also, I find the dining center hours inconvenient, especially on the weekends, (they don't open until 11:00) they open and close throughout the day and never seem to be open when I need them to be. The convenience stores however, are great but don't open until later in the day and their also super, super expensive, but you can pay using money from your meal plan.

    Dorm Life

Awesome learning environment with quiet hours to make studying easier. The RA's are great and really helpful. The dorm buildings, however, are old and the heating/air conditioning aren't so great, so it gets really cold in the room with the air is one and really warm when the heating is on. The bathrooms are relatively clean, except on the weekends because they don't get cleaned on weekends.

    Academic Rigor

Academic wise, I'm really pleased with all my classes and the teachers are great. The class sizes can be small for some classes and bigger for others, but the teachers are usually always willing to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come here unless you like to walk because the campus is really spread out and everything seems to be uphill. Also, get to know your professors and let them know who you are, especially in the big lecture classes, let them know that you care about their class.

    In three sentences

It may be in a small town, but there are plenty of things to do. It's an awesome learning environment and a great place to make friends. There are a lot of classes and most of the teachers are super nice and really helpful.

    What to do for fun

There is not too much to do in the city of Macomb. Find a good group of friends and hang out in each others room, because there is NOTHING to do in the community.

    Food and Dining

The food here is awful. Not enough healthy options for people who don't want to eat pizza or hamburgers for every meal.

    Dorm Life

The freshmen dorms are not the best, but they aren't too bad either.

    Academic Rigor

The classes that I have been enrolled in so far have not been too challenging; they have also not been too easy.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want a school that is a medium size, this is the school for you.

    In three sentences

The campus is a good size; not too big, and everything is within a reasonable walking distance. Since the school is not a huge school, most of the professors are down to earth and are there to help you if you are willing to put the work/time in

I do not know about the other dorms but at Tanner you need a key to get on the elevator. Even so you can go starting on the second floor to the stairs and get on any floor. That is a scary thought.

    Greek Life

If your in Soars then you cannot be apart of Greek Life but it`s cool !

    Clubs and Activities

A lot of clubs to put on resumes

Great for these types of students

    Clubs for the innovators !

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Air Ballon Parade is pretty interesting

    Bang for the buck

It`s cheap , but get some

    What to do for fun

Volunteer work is fun, get involved in teams or clubs ! Also start your own club. Do something positive with your friends. Macomb is dry, but it has some food joints and a movie place.

    Food and Dining

Get a job ! Fill out applications and call constantly so they know you need a job. Then you can make a budget for food and spend less money at the dining hall, therefore having more money on your card. I think you can get the money back if you have some left :)

    Dorm Life

Drama, I had the worst pairing.

    Academic Rigor

    Just do the homework !

    Tips for prospective students

1.)If possible get outside insurance. There`s is $400 charge to your account. 2.)Meet your roommate and find out who they are. Plan some rules out. 3.) It is easy to get good grades, just sit in the front and ask questions. 4.) Talk to your teachers, form a bond. 5.) The bus is free it takes you around campus. On the weekends only one bus runs #5 it goes to Wal-Mart it takes 30 to 45 mins. 6.)Seek out the Writing Center (make appointments in prior finals week), Malpass Library (it gets full around finals week),

    In three sentences

The school is cheap but be prepared for hidden fees. There is a food plan, I say get the average. The food is expensive ,so spend wisely. Writing Centers are available, they will help correct your papers. It is free.

    Campus Safety

There is always a Campus Security Officer in the office or roaming the campus. They are very helpful and communicate with students often.

    Clubs and Activities

WIU QC provides many organizations within these categories: Academic, Cultural, Leadership, Honorary, Professional, and Social/Support. Recreation and Fitness classes are provided for students interested. Career fairs and workshops are also provided throughout the semester.

    Bang for the buck

The amount difference from an Iowa Community College to WIU QC was not an uncomfortable or large increase. I am very satisfied with the tuition and other fees considering it is a brand new facility and professors are very educated and successful. Some professors on the other hand hardly teach well enough for the amount we are paying for our education. I like that WIU QC does not request students to pay for a meal plan and the parking price isn't bad, $40/yr.

    What to do for fun

The location of WIU QC is a great spot! During free time students can enjoy concerts down the street at The IWireless Center, Ice Skating outdoors, boating on the river, exercising on the pedestrian path, and enjoying lunch at Butterworth Park. Other fun things include local shopping, social groups within the college, using computers in the computer lab, and experiencing the Quad Cities nightlife on the Loop transportation.

    Food and Dining

There is not a cafeteria as I expected, thought WIU has Qdoba, Olive Tree, and GiLanella's Pizza provided throughout the week which is paid by students with cash or credit. The food is delicious but the price does not accommodate students very well, high prices. The scenery where students can dine is great! WIU is next to the Mississippi River, a park, and a bike path. A downside to the scenery may be the construction of additions for WIU, on the other hand it could be very interesting to watch!

    Dorm Life

WIU QC does not have on campus dorms, it is a new campus and most student rent apartments or live with their parents. Therefore I am unsure how to rate the dorm life. There are many social groups and clubs to be apart of at WIU that could be considered a great aspect of dorm life at WIU when it is available.

    Academic Rigor

Many classes are conducted through/amongst online services provided by the college which can make some assignments more difficult or easier depending on the student. Most professors use a common grading scale throughout the college courses. Many professors have various culture backgrounds and may not speak clear english and have very different expectations causing students to be flexible.

    Tips for prospective students

Communicate with an advisor within your degree of interest as soon as you find interest in the college. Go on a tour at all campuses to decide where you feel most comfortable at. Request information about their tuition, dorm, textbook and other expenses.

    In three sentences

WIU QC is very welcoming with various opportunities for students to engage in relationships with other students. The staff at WIU QC has exceeded my expectations with student services and recommendations. As a new student last semester, I felt very comfortable within the student body and amongst the professors.

    Campus Safety

Western has a great security system which includes a ton of security buttons located all around campus that you can press if you feel like you're in any type of danger which I think is very useful.

    Clubs and Activities

There are A LOT of clubs that you can join and all are very welcoming. There are so many that can interest students. There are volunteering clubs like for the community, there are multiple sports clubs, and also an Equestrian club which I thought was very cool. There was so many clubs at our Club fair that it was overwhelming in a good way because it shows how much of a variety of clubs there are at Western.

    What to do for fun

I like to go to the shows that Western puts on like the dance or theatre shows and not just because I am a Musical Theatre major. They're fun to attend and have great audiences. For future students there's always football, soccer, or basketball games to go to which is fun as well. Once you make friends there is always things to do within your group of friends even though Macomb is a small town. There's restaurants, movie theatres, stores, etc.

    Food and Dining

When I first got here the food was great, but once you've been there for 5 months everything gets old. It's the same all the time. I do appreciate the changes they have around the holidays but it would be nice if they had a lot more options and even healthier options. Before winter break I was constantly going to the convenience store because I was tired of what they were serving in the dinning hall, which kind of saves me money but it's not healthy. Another thing is everything is extremely expensive it's a little ridiculous. I don't know if it was a problem with last year and they had to increase but it 's very expensive and makes me not want to buy anything because I want to make sure I have enough for throughout the year.

    Dorm Life

I personally love my dorm and I think I was lucky to get it because us freshman are quite away from the rest of the campus and other dorms but it's not that bad in my opinion. I live in Bayliss/Henninger which is a lot better than Tanner which is right next to us. I feel bad for the people that live in Tanner because all the freshman dorms should at least be the same not one have a lesser value. I also think that we should only have to live on campus for the first year not two because some people could possibly want to save money, and living on campus is a big chunk of cash included in our tuition.

    Academic Rigor

So far I see that the learning behavior is great. Which I would expect it to be because we're all in college. I see greatness amongst the teachers and students. For example, this semester in my Health class we had a lot of discussions and it made the class not only get to know each other but it promoted the learning of the subjects we were on. Another example of great academic rigor is me after my Astronomy class, I thought I was going to be terrible in that class but once we did lots of class questions and quizzes every week it made my knowledge of astronomy expand. I loved what I was learning and now I know so much more than I did and always will.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips for prospective students are don't be scared to ask questions at this school because the teachers are here to educate you and want you to learn. I always ask questions and that is why I have done better on my tests by asking what I did wrong on the previous ones. Also being a freshman, asking questions is a big quality you may need. It helps majorly in the long run.

    In three sentences

Western Illinois has teachers who truly care about you education. Western has a lot of activities that students can be involved in. Western is successful at multiple programs and has successful alumni.

Throughout campus there are posts where you can push a button and there will be someone to help you within minutes. What to do for fun

Get involved! I had never played rugby before college, and I joined the Women's Club Rugby Team and I love it! Whatever you decide is the best fit for you, whether it's greek life or joining a club, get involved.

    Food and Dining

The food is decent, but WAY too expensive. The required dining plan minimum is 1,780 dollars and my roommate and I had a hard time spending all the money, we were even buying other people food. Plus, if you don't spend all of it, you will only get $250.00 back at the end of the year.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a must when attending college your first couple years. It's not fun to have to live in a small room with someone else, but that is not the point of living in the dorms. It is an excellent way to meet new people!

    Academic Rigor

Overall, I feel like I am earning an excellent education. However, compared to other higher education institutes WIU is not quite as prestigious.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students, I would recommend attending one of Westerns informational programs that they offer throughout the year. Also, meeting with your academic advisor and financial advisor as well to understand fully what to expect financially and academically.

    In three sentences

I love Western Illinois University, attending school here has opened up so many opportunities for me. The best part is WIU aims to make college more affordable for the consumer and opens the door for all sorts of perspective students, and provides an excellent education. Food and Dining

Food is expensive and average tasting but the dining hall experience is a good way to meet new people. You can usually find something you find decent tasting. Campus Safety

Every college has it's dangers. Be smart. I felt pretty safe on campus, even at night. There are blue emergency boxes all over campus, campus police, and an escort service.

    Greek Life

There is a pretty big Greek life at Western. It looks like it can be a lot of fun and worth while, just be sure to choose carefully.

    Clubs and Activities

They have everything. This was probably the best part of my college experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Mud volleyball tournament in the fall. The Henninger porch is a great place to watch the sunset. Q lot is a tundra in the winter and a dessert in the summer. Many people don't know about the pool/hot tub in the rec center.

    Bang for the buck

Let's be honest, compared to many Universities the WIU price is right. For the experience I had at Western I would say it was worth the money, but that all depends on how you spend your college experience and whether you spend your time growing as a person, meeting new people, getting involved, and working hard, or taking advantage of the party scene, more than one should.

    What to do for fun

There are soooo many activities on campus. Intramural sports, regular sports, clubs, races, greek life, random tournament activities like mud volley ball, big pink volleyball, and so on. There are talent shows, family weekends, carnivals, roller skating nights and much more. Also, if they don't have a club you want to join, start your own! That's what I did. They make the process pretty simple and you can leave your mark on the University. In town there are restaurants, a movie theater, bowling alley, indoor bow and arrow shooting range, and more. It is a small town, keep that in mind and don't expect a mall, but instead enjoy the charm Macomb has to offer.

    Food and Dining

The food is not as bad as some say, students just need things to complain about. If you're looking into WIU, you've probably read bad reviews about the food. They are really working to make sure they offer exactly what the students want. The head staff members are very open to hearing students opinions. They are also getting better with providing vegetarian and gluten free options. Get to know the head chef in your cafeteria, they will hook you up.

    Dorm Life

This will be different for every student. I loved the dorms. I lived in Bayliss and Thompson for 1.5 years and I was a Resident Assistant in Tanner for 1 year. Some of the buildings need renovations, but they are doing so building by building. The buildings that they have renovated are very nice. Dorm life will be what you make it. Keep your door open and become friends will people on your floor. Your experience will depend on your roommate, people on your floor, and whether or not you get involved. many people don't know that several buildings have rooms that are smaller than normal but they will allow you to not have a room mate and pay the price of a double room. It is a great deal if you don't mind a little less space.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on your field of study. I am studying hospitality management so it is not as difficult as other fields such as the sciences. I don't believe that Western is an extremely easy or difficult University over all. I believe if the course work is difficult you will be given the resources that you need to do well, that is what I have noticed through other students experiences.

    Tips for prospective students

If you like the inner city you may struggle living in Macomb. I absolutely loved it and the campus offers enough activities to keep students busy but many people complain that there is not enough to do in Macomb. It all depends on your perspective. Also, food is pricey in the dorms, but don't be afraid to speak up about it and talk to the catering staff because they are very willing to listen and work to make students happy. Also, don't ignore your teachers. They are all great people who truly want to help you in every way. I loved the faculty and staff and Western. Remember that they can be a reference for you and that they often have many ties to the field you are entering. Lastly, take advantage of the activities and JOIN THINGS! They have tons of exercise classes at the rec. They also have a sauna, hot tub, pool, and racquetball courts. Side note: Join mud volleyball in the fall

    In three sentences

Western Illinois University is an exciting four year college that is just the right size. I think Western would be great for any student from the Midwest region who can adjust to small town life and likes diversity. There aren't a lot of students (roughly 10,000) and everyone won't look like you. Western helps you learn to accept people's differences and make the best of a bad or good situation depending on your take of our campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Allegedly Simpkins Hall (English building) is haunted.

    Bang for the buck

Western is roughly $21,000 for a student coming in for Fall 2013. The rates adjust with every new class. The rate is locked in meaning it will never increase so you will always know what to expect depending on how many credit hours you take. For the price of $21,000 you are receiving exactly what you're paying for. Students often complain about the stuff we don't have but we're not exactly paying a lot of money. We have free transportation to and from Walmart and the other stores in our city and the computer lab offers free printing. The bookstore is an arm and a leg but that's at most schools. Western doesn't offer a lot of book vouchers.

    What to do for fun

There are events in Bay Henn's underground for freshman and other students who want to attend maybe once a month. There are parties every weekend by different fraternities and sororities. There are usually parties at the Union hosted by other student organizations for various holidays. We have the rec, working out is fun right?

    Food and Dining

There is variety but the food becomes really repetitive. I have had other friends from different schools visit and they like our food but that's only because they don't have to eat it everyday. We have subs, pasta, buffalo wings on Wednesday, a healthy food section, a burger section, and a salad bar. The food is really overpriced. I think the food at our school is the most expensive out of all of the Illinois universities! Way to go Western. :(

    Dorm Life

Once again, it's what you make of it. The freshman dorms are Bayliss, Henninger, and Tanner. Bayliss and Henninger are nicer in regards to the set up. Our dining hall is located in BayHenn and our convenience store (yes, we have one) is located in Tanner as well as the computer lab. There are a lot of events thrown in Bay Henn's underground and you are really advised to attend. Since this is the only school I've attended I don't know what to compare it to but on a scale of 1-10 my dorm (Henninger) is an 8.

    Academic Rigor

We're not the best but we're definitely not the worst. You will be challenged sometimes. Yes, it could be more difficult but you also had more schools to choose from.

    Tips for prospective students

Just as you would for any school: keep documents, remember the names of the people you spoke with (administrators), and come in with an open mind. Depending on where you're from (small town or big city) coming to Western will be a major adjustment. The people here are pretty open minded, its really what you make of it.

    In three sentences

Western is interesting to say the least. It's nothing major by any means but we have some luxuries that we often take for granted. We're not the best university but you will receive the bang for your buck. We're one of the cheaper Illinois universities.
