    Tips for prospective students

Apply early for housing and request for a roommate your first year of college. It's a great way to transition with someone else who is it your same situation.

    Bang for the buck

Once you apply and are for sure going here, your tuition will never change if the university decided to up the tuition price

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here because it's only 2 hours from home. There aren't a lot of things to do here but you can make the most of it by going to the Square, Library, and Rec Center.

    Am learning a lot

Great for these types of students

Great for any student probably, but most likely for those who are used to small-town settings, or want a quieter environment to learn and study in.

    Tips for prospective students

I'd probably get your dorm room or apartment as soon as possible, because housing in Macomb/Western fills up fast, and there are a lot of students living in the dorms. I'd also visit the Scholarship early and often, and apply for any scholarships as soon as possible.

    Bang for the buck

Western is probably one of the most affordable of Illinois' public state schools, and probably in general. They have a tuition lock, so your tuition and even your room and board freezes at the cost of the first year you enroll. Western is the only school in Illinois I think to offer this, and one of the few in the whole country. It is definitely worth taking advantage of.

    Am enjoying being here

Macomb may seem like a boring small town to most people, and well, it pretty much is. But I come from a small town myself, so I guess I'd probably prefer that to a big city any day, and it is only 3 hours away from where I live. There are a lot of student clubs and organizations anyway, and a lot of interesting people (artists, social scientists, authors, etc) come to lecture at Western and attending their talks is always well worth it. If you enjoy a quiet, small town environment, you will love it here. The campus is the perfect place for a nice walk and a plethora of interesting sculptures to look at and has plenty of trees and a beautiful lake to study or relax at. There is also the Union with foodcourts and a Rec Center if you like to work out and stay fit.

    Am learning a lot

I would say that there are many opportunities to learn here at Western, but sometimes I feel like I am not always getting quite the quality education I desire. It is a public state-funded college after all. Although I occaisionally feel like I'm just attending beefed up highschool classes, I also keep in mind that I have very interesting and challenging classes as well, and that I am still only at a Sophomore level. Overall, I think the professors here leave in the student's hands a little more to expand there knowledge of their subjects, which makes sense because students are just as responsible for their education as the professors are. Overall there are a lot of majors to choose from, as well, and plenty of subjects to study. They also have an awesome library.

Western Illinois University is a great school for students who are out going, and enjoy a challenge.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to apply early for housing and scholarships.

    Bang for the buck

WIU was the first university in Illinois to freeze tuition for incoming students. But now they have expanded on their great offer to freeze room and board as well. Also they have many scholarship opportunities for students of all grade levels.

    Am enjoying being here

There are many on campus activities and clubs to join in that there is never a dull moment.

    Am learning a lot

Not only does Western Illinois University offer a great deal of programs, but there is also a wide variety of people on campus helping to enhance life experiences.

Great for these types of students

Ready to obtain a great deal of knowledge, have many worthwhile experiences, adjust to college comfortably, and have a great time fulfilling all wishes and needs.

    Tips for prospective students

Only getting ready to start my second semester, all I can advise is: It is worth it to prove to professors that you care and give it all you have. It can only benefit you in the end. Also, get involved with hobbies or groups you can relate to because it brings great and new experiences and friends. Lastly, it is always necessary to have a little fun, but be sure to stay on top of the studies. It is not worth it to party every night and get bad grades. You are in college and paying for a reason!

    Bang for the buck

This university is one of the cheaper in the state and it is amazing because there is still so much offered. Two of my favorite aspects, included in the costs, are the recreation center that offers fitness classes from cardio to weight lifting to yoga and also has an entire gym of equipment, three floors, an indoor pool and hot tub, basketball courts, a floor of ellipticals and stationery bikes, and so much more. The second is the food options that have rarely dissapointed me. I especially love the fact that there are vegetarian, which I am, options everyday and sometimes even vegan.

    Am enjoying being here

I do not think I could have picked a better fit for a college. My main reason for choice was that it is one of only two in the state that offers my major, Music Therapy. The other was that it was closer to home than the other option, yet still far enough to get homesick. All of the other great things have just come along while I have attended. I love the campus size because it is very big for me, coming from a high school class of 71, but still small enough to create many friendships and feel a sense of belonging. My farthest walk from my dormitory last semester was only about ten minutes and they also offer a bus system but I choose to be green. Like I said before, the faculty, food, and exercise options are great. Besides academics and daily living, there is so much to do with all the possible people to meet, movie theaters, restaurants, music, and there are so many clubs. I joined the Chi Omega fraternity and am involved with the campus recyclers, the Green Energy Team. It is definitely not hard to keep busy!

    Am learning a lot

I have learned more in one semester than I feel like I have learned during all four years of high school. At first it was a real struggle trying to adjust from the high school atmosphere of getting straight As with little to no effort, to actually having to deal with failure from time to time. It is really a satisfying feeling to reach an earned grade that so much hard work is put into. I could not ask for more knowledgeable and enjoyable to be around faculty either. They keep me motivated to do well and they are extremely supportive when failure does occur and only try to suggest ways for it to be avoided in the future. They offer a ton of help, time, and resources.

Great for these types of students

every type of student is great here.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is labeled as a party school but only you can make that decision. Everyone has a choice to either party every night or take time to actually study. It is a great atmosphere no matter what type of personality you have and there are tons of things to do, only if you feel up to it though. It being your freshman year, you will not know what to do with all your time. Also make sure you apply for scholarships and housing early, it will only benefit you. I got the best dorm building my freshman year all because i applied for it more than six months beforehand.

    Bang for the buck

My time at Western has definitely been worth the money so far. If your from a big suburb, there are for sure some things you have to get accustomed to. You get a great education for a fair price concerning some other schools.

    Am enjoying being here

Academic wise i am enjoying Western. the professors are great and really personable if your not in a class of 100. It's really important that you take the time to actually email your professors if you have any questions regarding the class. Trust me they want you to. It is better to ask the professors about the material your confused on or you'll regret it when it comes to exam time.

    Am learning a lot

When I first started my classes i wasn't sure what to expect. i had never been in a lecture hall before and it was definetely interesting trying t come up with unique ways to make my notes organized. it was very challenging when it came to a few exams, in high school i was always good at memorizing material. However in my Zoology class my first semester at Western i realized i had to do much more than just study specifc definitions. Through all my unique classes i learned material that was mostly interesting to me and each professor tried their hardest in their individual ways to make the class fun for the students.

Get involved and make friends. When you move in, keep your door open and meet the people on your floor. You may not be best friends with everyone, but at least get to know as many people as you can.

    Campus Safety

There is a student escort service on campus, especially for those late nights at the library where you just want to be safe and not walk home alone. However, I feel campus is very safe with our campus security and patrol that are always out and don't feel a need to use this service.

    Greek Life

There is a ton of academic and social fraternities and sororities on campus. Whichever you decide to join they are a great bunch of individuals who help your transition into college much smoother and more enjoyable. Plus it never hurts to build your resume with highly looked at organizations!

    Clubs and Activities

Scuba club, MMA club, or trivia at the library. Western seriously has it all and if your interested in it and we don't have it (highly unlikely) start your own club up! Western is great for their clubs and activities to have leadership roles in.

Great for these types of students

EVERYONE! Campus is diverse with so many different types of individuals, from rural, suburban, & urban and everyone gets along. It's great coming from Chicago and learning about someone growing up in the south on a farm.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

5th floor in the library is the complete and utter silence floor. You don't even hear a pin drop! It is said that some of the floors of the dorms are haunted which is always a scare around Halloween to hear about. Haunted Higgins is a great haunted house on the very top floor of the residence hall around Halloween that is a great charity event that provides you with a scream while walking through. Chicks in The Square the best chicken fingers they call lips you'll get anywhere dipped in their original famous sauce!

    Bang for the buck

With being a great affordable state school you do earn a great education for a reasonable tuition price that is locked in once you start your freshman year! There are several book stores that offer great prices on text books so you don't empty your pocket out immensely.

    What to do for fun

Enjoy a walk around our beautiful campus. Go to the recreational center to enjoy basketball, volleyball, raquet ball, running, weight lifting, swimming, or the sauna to relax. The recreational center always has a bunch of intramural sports happening from tennis, flag football, softball, volleyball, or even a paper airplane toss! Visit The Square which is our downtown area to look at the cool shops or the chow down on some amazing food!

    Food and Dining

The cafeterias always have something new and exciting to be served in their clean, nutritional, and affordable atmosphere. You have convenient stores in multiple spots on campus for a late night snack. In our union we hold a Sbarros pizza, burger king, and bagel shop. Swipe your WIU student card at ease to pay for everything you pay off your meal plan or pay with cash. You also can find great student jobs at these locations for the extra pocket cash.

    Dorm Life

The residence hall rooms themselves are a great size where two people can live comfortably and four if you are in a suit. Some are co-ed (by floors) and very nice to have the first couple floors for honors students. The RAs are always great individuals who upkeep rules and regulations.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are at a great size where they are not to big to not have the professions individual attention and not to small so you can seem familiar faces in them. Homework has been moderate at all my years here, and tests/exams are always announced and I have been well prepared for with reviews, study sessions, and with graduate assistant help.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a campus visit! We have beautiful residence halls of different statures, an enormous beneficial recreational center. A 5 story library with immense information for papers and helpful librarians. So many intramural sports that are fun to grab some friends and involve yourself in.

    In three sentences

Immediately stepping foot on campus I have transformed into a better individual with a higher education. Westerns motto is higher values in higher education, they apply this very well with their amazing professors, numerous extracurricular activities, and multiple job positions on campus that can better you as a student. Western is a great size school, with a diverse amount of colleagues who make the college transfer experience easier!

    ANYONE! :)

    Tips for prospective students

When it comes to your money remember there are some additional fees included with your tuition. This can include internet for your room and for freshman an orientation fee.

    Bang for the buck

They freeze your tuition so your price doesn't change as long as you stay enrolled here for all of years and don't leave.

    Am enjoying being here

I am a freshman at this school so I do miss home but it is still very exciting being away. The campus is great and the people are very nice here. I especially love my sorority I joined. :)

College life is not all about partying, please remember that. You go to school for an education and that's what your going to get here. So study hard and you'll be as smart as you let yourself become.

Great for these types of students

This college is great for any outgoing students. However, even if you're conservative, this college may also be for you. Overall, anyone is a fit for Western.

    Tips for prospective students

When you're a freshman choosing classes, make sure you do it the second you are able. Otherwise you will most likely not get the class you want or need. Also, when applying for housing, don't wait.

    Bang for the buck

This public university is quite cheap in price, yet every thing about the college is anything but.

    Am enjoying being here

The college has a lot to offer for entertainment. There are tons of Greek life organizations, and if you're not into that then there are many student organizations, activities, and clubs to choose from.

    Am learning a lot

The classes are small enough where you as a student are able to grasp the information better as opposed to multiple lectures.

Great for these types of students

Great for anyone. People will always have their own cliques, but everyone basically gets along here.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not get engulfed by the party scene. Your grades will slip fast and your money will be all gone. STUDY. In high school you could get away without studying for tests. NOT HERE ... it is time to grow up and realize you are at college and not in high school anymore. Find a job. It might take away from some studying, but it will occupy your time and put money in your pocket that you will be wishing you had during the semester. Get involved. There is sooo many different clubs and activities to get involved with and they are a lot of fun.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other schools this is a very reasonably priced school and the education is very good. What this school gets you on is the money spent on dining. Food is probably what i spend all of my money on. I feel like I am constantly putting more and more money on my ID (what you use to buy food from the cafeteria) just for food. There is however a transportation system (buses) that are extremely useful and are included in the package. Not only do these buses travel to the dorms and to the buildings where classes are taught but these buses even take students to the stores and other places that are needed but without some sort of transportation are too far to walk. The buses are very quick too; during school days you will not wait more than 8 minutes for the next bus. There is also a recreation center that is AMAZING and it is also already included. All you do is walk in and swipe your ID and you can lift free weights, play basket ball, run, workout on machines, and attend fitness classes that work you out.

    Am enjoying being here

It might be in the middle of no where, but you would be surprised how much there really is to do. Even inside the dorms there are ping pong tables, pool tables, and air hockey machines. There are also a lot of restaurants and a few parks around that are very nice. For me, it is also the perfect distance from home (4 hour drive) where I am not smothered by family, but also where, if needed, I could go home or they come here. Of course there is also the party scene like at every college and personally i have taken that route, but I make it my top priority to keep up with class. I am here to get an education. Not party. As long as you can balance it out, you should be fine. I like it so much here because it is possible to get a good education while still enjoying myself.

    Am learning a lot

To be honest, it all depends on the professor and the way you learn/remember things. A nice amount of teachers here are foreign and have accents. They are still very good teachers, but sometimes are hard to understand. Power points come in very handy. A lot of teachers use them and are very well organized but there are the few that don't. I am actually surprised by how much I have learned. I thought that with all these different classes that I would not be able to learn it all and remember it, but the way some classes are taught are extremely easy to follow and learn from.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life at Western Illinois University is great. The dorms are very nice! They make sure that the temperature is going to stay hot or cold before they will change the temperature. They are very close to the main buildings on campus.

    Academic Rigor

The plus minus system that Western Illinois University uses is great. The plus minus system allows for students to be flexible. One extra point can push a student up to a higher grade.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not well maintained. They are expensive to live in and are small. The experience you have is dependent mostly upon who else lives on your floor with you.

    Academic Rigor

The classes for the most part are good. I learned a lot from them. The professors, for the most part, are very helpful and knowledgeable.

    Tips for prospective students

Advocate for yourself and budget your money. Do not spend recklessly as the University will take any money they can get from you.

    Campus Safety

We have the Office of Public Safety on campus and our campus police force. Also, if you ever need an escort home, or across campus for any reason, you can call them and they are happy to oblige. Campus is well lit at night, though it is never advised walking through the large visitor's lot next to the gym by yourself at night.

    Greek Life

We have 20 fraternities and 9 sororities on campus. Some are social, others are professional groups. The state of Illinois has a no hazing policy and Western is no secret exception to this. In my time here, I've never heard of any cases against a Greek organization.

    Clubs and Activities

So many to choose from: Marching band, Equine Club, any sport you can think of, Greek life, Student Government, volunteer organizations, and if there is something that you want to do, and we don't already have an organization for it, you can create one yourself!

Great for these types of students

People who come from a big city and need to slow things down a little; people who want the feel of a larger school while having smaller class sizes; people who want a less expensive education; and people who might just want the traditional college experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The best kept secret on campus: the Prairie Lounge in the Union. Full of couches and comfy chairs, not too many people pay attention to this nook and during the lunch rush, it can be a nice getaway from the noise and the crowd. Campus also has a Disk Golf course.

    Bang for the buck

Western is a great school for a great price. I feel confident that I will not be wallowing in student debt after graduation. Also, if you rent your books, which the University bookstore allows, it makes the headache of trying to buy and sell books easier and cheaper!

    What to do for fun

In the Union, we have billiards, arcade games, bowling, a multipurpose theater. Along with the regularly scheduled clubs and campus extra curricular, Macomb has movie theaters, mini golf, rollerskating, parks with camping and fishing ponds, and a plethora of restaurants; chain and local.

    Food and Dining

We have four dining areas: Bay/Hen, Thompson, Grote for the dinning halls and we have the Union with restaurants. Each location has a Convenience store for more grocery type purchases. The food is good and it is cheap, and you DO NOT have to cook for yourself! You really can't beat it.

    Dorm Life

Yes, you'll get the 2 am fire alarm; yes you'll get those kids coming back from the bar at 1 in the morning from the bar on a Saturday night; yes you'll make new friend, yes you'll get involved with your floor, yes you'll learn all about campus activities through fliers and promotions held in the lobby; no you won't have to clean your own bathroom; no you won't have to cook your own meals; YES you'll appreciate the experience of dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

The lower division classes are pretty much a breeze if you go to class and don't sleep away your first semester. Upper division pushes you sometimes, but due to the smaller class sizes, you get to know your peers and your professors and it makes it so much easier to ask questions.

    Tips for prospective students

Live in the dorms for at least a year. I met so many people and found so much to do just by walking through the lobby. Also, don't be afraid to get involved. If there is something you're interested in doing, but you don't know anyone else involved, push your anxiety aside and step up. Don't be one of those students who just goes to school and back to their dorms or apartments; experience collage.

    In three sentences

The size of this university makes me feel like I'm at a big school with the feeling of still being in a small town, like where I grew up. This school also has a lot of great extra curricular activities and groups to get involved with. Campus Safety is awesome at Western Illinois University. They have an alert system that sends a text to a students phone to let them know of any problems on the campus. They also have blue security lights around campus to pull in case of an emergency and campus security will come right away.

    Greek Life

Many students seem to get involved in Greek life at Western Illinois. There are many sorority's and fraternity's that are offered. The sorority's and fraternity's have Greek week in the fall and spring to get students to check them out and invite them to join.

    Clubs and Activities

Western Illinois University has any club or activity that a person can think of. If they don't have a certain club or activity a student wants to get involved in they can get a waiver of 10 or more people who is interested and get it authorized by the school and it will become a club or activity.

Great for these types of students

Western Illinois University is great for any type of student from any background, culture and race. Western Illinois welcomes anyone and everyone.

    Bang for the buck

All of the money that students put into college is definitely worth it at Western Illinois University because it is a wonderful campus and everyone is friendly has a very welcoming attitude.

    What to do for fun

For fun, students can get involved in Greek life, sports, and intramural activities. There is also the student rec center that offers many classes to take along with a swimming pool. Even though Western Illinois University is in a small town, the students find activities to keep them occupied that is fun and gets them involved.

    Food and Dining

Most of the dorms consist of food and dining. When students first arrive to campus coming back from the summer the food is delicious and very enjoyable but after awhile the food seems to be the same. Even though they cafeterias seem to have the same food, the dining area is very clean.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is so much fun and the campus offers many living dormitories. The rooms are spacious compared to other colleges and very clean. Also the dorms have activities for the students living in them which helps the students to get involved.

    Academic Rigor

During the year 2011-2012 Western Illinois University has had a low academic rate. Besides the ratings i believe that if a student is serious about their academics they will do just fine. The professors are great and it is up to the student on what kind of grades they would like to obtain.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for prospective students would be to know where all of your classes are ahead of time even though it is a smaller campus it is still helpful and easy to get lost. I also would recommend that they meet other students on campus and get involved in the activities on campus that Western Illinois offers. Another tip that i would recommend would be that students ask their professors questions because the more knowledge you have about the topics in you classes, the better you will understand the professor and the topics.

    In three sentences

I would give Western Illinois a 10 on a scale of 10. The campus makes students feel like they are home and welcomes in students with open arms. I would recommend this college to any student but they just have to be willing to get use to a smaller town if they are from a big city.

The Purple Haze group at athletic events really gets the crowd going. Also, the Homecoming festivities are really fun and brings a sense of togetherness around campus.

    Bang for the buck

People around campus really are friendly. Athletic events are the best because of the spirit of the crowd. The fact that we can be a small crowd compared to larger schools, and still get the arena/stadium rocking is amazing.

    What to do for fun

The Recreation Center is a very common place to hang out, work out, or get a game of basketball in. Also, there are many parties on the weekends, all of the people who rent out houses around campus are very friendly.

    Food and Dining

While there are many options in the dining areas around campus, they can tend to get repetitive. However, there are many fast food areas around, and on campus, mainly in the Student Union.

    Dorm Life

The dorms on campus are very nice, with many useful facilities within the building, like convenience stores, lounge areas, and a computer lab. Also, if there is not a cafeteria in one specific dorm, there is one not more than 25 feet away.

Between organizational events like bowling or ice skating, intramural sports like basketball, soccer, and volleyball, or the movie theaters and parks close to campus, there are so many things to choose from. Some times, student groups host movie nights, we have celebrities performers and comedians too! WIU definitely has more than your average school's selection of fun things to do when you can spare a minute from studying!

    Food and Dining

There are four different dining halls on campus, each with different selections to choose from. And if that isn't enough for you, Macomb itself has tons of restaurants close to the campus. Try not to eat too much!

    Dorm Life

Each of the residence halls are accommodating and each offer their own individualized living style. There are apartment-style halls, traditional halls, and even suite-style halls designed for transfer students when already had their first experiences in residential living.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are engaging, but the knowledge you gain can be instrumental for you later on as each semester builds into the next. You have to work hard to succeed and it's brings a good overall feeling when you've finished.

    Tips for prospective students

Have an open mind when you're visiting schools. Western can seem a little bland at first sight, but once you're here there are so many things for you to do! The most important thing is to prioritize why you are in school in the first place. The professors can only push you so much and it's easy to get lose in all the great things about being a college student, so you have to decide to go out and get your diploma.

    Campus Safety

We live in a town with three police departments, OPS for WIU, the police department of Macomb, and the State Police. At night walking through Q-lot can be rough and some people have been mugged or stabbed, but OPS offers Escort Services for late night safety. Call a head and get a ride for free if you feel that your life will be threatened. There is also an emergency alert system that notifies via Email, and cell phone if something happens during the day. After the NIU Valentines day shooting, WIU texts, calls, and emails regularly every semester, testing its emergency services. There are also Blue Beacon lights that have an emergency signal that notifies policemen in the area to report to that specific light to whomever pressed the button.

    Greek Life

There are 10 Fraternities and 5 sororities on campus. I would suggest going to every house to meet the members and see if you are a fit for their house. Rush weeks are the Second week of the semester and the sororities have to go through Formal Recruitment, where they required to visit every house and rank the houses they like better. I feel this is more of a popularity contest than recruitment. As for the Fraternities, most follow their friends and they have the same people coming into their house because they want people just like them to carry on their traditions. Theta Kappa Epsilon gives a bid to everyone, Theta Xi just got a new house and they stick to themselves. AGR and AGS are agricultural fraternities and most of their members have pick up trucks. Sigma Chi does a great job of sticking to their values and recruiting members of different temperaments, talents, and convictions and builds members based on friendship, justice, and learning.

    Clubs and Activities

Intramural Sports run all year long and apart from the officiating staff not being knowledgeable about the sports they are reffing, they are a great way to continue hobbies and sports with other students on campus.

Great for these types of students

If you do not drink, there are many things you can do for free without drinking and spending money. There is a large field used for softball and football intramurals and they are open to the public. There is a Great Campus Recreation Facility, including weight room, cardio machines, indoor track, racquetball courts, basketball courts, suana, swimming pool, and group fitness classes that are all free.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Bring Tailgating for the football games back. No one goes to the games anymore because the team has not had a winning season in years. Support the team, they will do better.

    Bang for the buck

There is a coupon book passed out at the beginning of the year called Campus Special. These coupons offer great deals for the students to save money on various fast food companies as well as other services such as oil changes.

    What to do for fun

There are two bowling alleys, one on Adams called Diggers City Bowl and the other one is in the basement of the Union. A hidden gem that most people don't know about unless they have cars, there is a Macomb park district facility called Ball Fore that is a littler farther from campus, but it has Mini Golf, Batting Cages, Volleyball and Basketball courts, and a driving range. They also freeze a rink in the winter for ice skating. On your way to Ball Fore, look past the closed China Buffet for Skateland. Skateland is a giant warehouse with an inline skating rink, arcade games, and out door go-karts. There is a movie Theater with 6 theaters next door to the K-mart. If you enjoy playing disc golf, there are two courses in the town of Macomb. One is on 67 at Everly park and is a 18 hole course. The other is on the South part of the WIU campus on Adams, next to Lincoln Washington Residence Halls and the across from the Sigma Chi Fraternity house. There are 11 bars in this town of 20,000 and as long as you are of age, I would recommend the Change of Pace bar because it has an outdoor patio, cheap beer, and good food for Friday Happy hour.

    Food and Dining

Sodexo is the distribution provider for all the food and drinks that are sold within the three cafeterias and union on campus. The Union has three restaurants, Sbarro, Burger King, and a Deli/ Bagel shop that also sells coffee. All the food is A la Carte and can be purchased using your student ID. If you run out of food, you can always replace funds on the STARS website and that money will just be billed to your student account. There is also a coffee/ snack shop in the Stipes Building, next to the library, and offers food as well as drinks and snacks. Vending machines are in every building on campus and can only be used with Rocky Bucks, which is money that is pre-paid. There is a variety of food, always providing burgers fries pizzas and sandwiches. There is a salad bar that is always open and costs more than the pizza. The healthier the foods, the more expensive your bill becomes. If you eat a lot, then plan on getting a Plus 2 plan when you are registering for your Meal Plan.

    Dorm Life

At Western Illinois, these are referred to as Residence Halls. They are currently renovating multiple Residence Halls at WIU because most of them were built in the 1970's and were not built to last. The biggest downfall of the Residence Halls is the inconsistent temperature control in the rooms. WIU will not turn on Air Conditioning until June, leaving the spring semester finals to be dreadfully hot. The Resident Advisers, or RA's do a great job of holding educational meetings for the students to attend and see what the town and university have to offer. If there is a problem with roommates or others on the floor, the office of Student Development works well with the students to accommodate their needs. Most incoming Freshmen are excited to experience college in the only way they have seen, by drinking. Office of Public Safety makes regular rounds on the weekends down the halls of the buildings and will not be afraid to look into open rooms. Most of the Residence Halls are Dry meaning alcohol cannot be brought into the building, this means even empty bottles will result in a fine or violation. If there are any damages on your floor, you and everyone else will be fined, I would advice working together with the other floormates to ensure that does not happen.

    Academic Rigor

The problem with academics is that all of the professors have their own way of setting up a class. After the new grading scale policy including a plus and minus system, students have to work harder to maintain their GPA and have no chance of receiving an A+. Getting a C- from a professor is now considered failing. However, there is still a problem with getting feedback from teachers. Depending on the department, most students have encountered difficulties meeting with professors and understanding them because of their accents and their teaching styles. Other professors are very flexible and work with you to help you succeed. As for attendance policies, they can make or break a grade and do not show progress of a student comprehending material. The attendance policies are up to the individual professors discretion and most will recognize that attendance is not important as being able to complete work thoroughly as well as receive high marks on their tests. There is a lack of appreciation from the University towards their staff of teachers, and have sent many away or have selected incompetent teachers which hinders students' abilities to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure you know what it is you would like to do, and take your general education classes early to get your Grade Point Average up before you declare. Focus on school first and make it a priority during the week.

    In three sentences

Western Illinois has been making multiple changes within the past five years to eliminate the notorious stigma of WIU being just a Party School. The town has been enforcing laws that are unconstitutional and that violate the rights of the residents in order to prevent extravagant parties. If they spent more money to fixing up the the buildings and residents halls instead of paying millions of dollars promoting on billboards, the retention rate of students returning a second year would not be declining.

You feel a sense of independence when your living the dorm life which is far more different than living at home with parents.

    Academic Rigor

As far as classes concerning this issue, I would definitely have to say they vary greatly. Some classes are of 100 students where some are of the least 22. So far my classes have been great. Each is not overwhelming big or completely small, they're just right if you ask me, It's fine to have all classes 25-40 students, but to me you lose that college feel so that's why I don't mind having class in a big lecture hall.
