Great for these types of students

I have found that Whittier is a magnet for those who are looking to be not only seen, but heard. The small classes and campus are perfect to create and close and intimate bond with others. So here you go, to sum it up, it you are looking for any of the following in a college, Whittier is your final destination! -Small beautiful campus -1:25 teacher:student ratio -leadership activities -volunteer work -job opportunities -clubs/sports/societies -close places off campus (shops, book/movie/music, restaurants, etc) -lots of friends! -many majors to choose from! -near major cities and hot spots in CA (Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, La, Hollywood, etc.) All-in-all Whittier is an amazing place and you would have the best educational and life experience if you came here!!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking into colleges, be sure to drive through Whittier and visit the college. Once you see it I am sure you will fall in love. The campus is beautiful and tours are always available upon request. You will notice that the campus is small, which makes it a safer environment and easier to get around. The library is a must-see and so is the President's house which can be found up the hill past the gym. If you stick around long enough you may even see pass by her in the upper quad, or perhaps you may want to stop in the cafeteria and eat alongside some of the professors. Like I said, Whittier is a very special, tightly-knit community!

    Bang for the buck

Whittier college is a private institution and costs more than the average public college, but it is definitely worth the money. The cafeteria serves amazing meals on a weekly basis and there is also The Spot, where you can buy snacks drinks and even delicious hot meals if you are on the go. The experience each student has here is nothing but amazing! You will meet life long friends, and influential professors and/or coaches who are always there with a listening ear or a helping hand. Whittier College provides a close-knit family and a unexplainable opportunities in and out of the classroom!

    Am enjoying being here

If you are interested in going to a school where there is always something going on, Whittier College is the place for you! The sports teams are all like their own tight-knit family, and so are the societies on campus. The clubs here are also very active with students on campus. Though, if you feel like you need to get away, Uptown Whittier is only five minutes up the street. There, you and your friends can go out for a day of shopping and sushi, or catch a movie at the local theater. There is always something in store, either on or off campus for a Whittier college student!

    Am learning a lot

Whittier is a small private school in the eclectic town of Whittier near Los Angeles, California. The classroom sizes are small, within the range of one teacher per 25 students. thus, there is a lot of one-on-one time with your professors. Also, this gives way to making influential friends (people in high places) that assist you throughout life. the opportunities that are afforded to a Whittier student or graduate are irreplaceable and can rarely be found at another institution.

Great for these types of students

Plenty of opportunities such as major selection. This college has its own unique system called The Whittier's Scholars Program. It is essentially you creating your own major. Picking current majors that exist and blend it with others, it is unique! The atmosphere is great here too, always quiet, just so nice. The size, about 1800 or so students attend Whittier College, so it is pretty small, as well as the campus size, really small. Great campus security and lots of access to utilities. Oh and it is in Whittier, many things around! Not far from Los Angeles, nor Anaheim, party central basically. Come by!

    Tips for prospective students

Get ready to be known well. As you always see the same faces, if not, familiar faces over and over. It is only a month of my time here, I see the same faces over and over and over. Other than that, just get ready to relax and have a good time.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition itself is $35,000+ but you're getting first hand knowledge from professors, one on one. Something you wouldn't get at UCLA or Pepperdine or whatever. Seriously the small campus really makes it all worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

Oh yes! Wonderful weather, beautiful campus, grand atmosphere, always quiet, and best of all, it is small. You can walk to one end of the campus from another in 5 minutes. Going to a dorm seems like a pain (as I am a commuter) but it is only a walk up a mini hill. Other than that, you can seriously get around the whole campus in 10 minutes tops.

    Am learning a lot

You're always noticed by the professors and always have the time with a 1-1 with them no matter what. They also grow into you becoming a friend as well, a person to talk to anytime you're free or even...hang out! But seriously you're always learning, biggest class size I've been in is 25 kids. The biggest I heard was 130. But on average it is about 16 kids or so.

    Campus Safety

Assaults on students are, if not unheard of, fairly rare. The area is mostly upper-class suburban, with a shopping district that caters to students nearby...not exactly a dangerous neighborhood. Additionally, the police department is literally two blocks away, and its average response time is about 5 minutes. Crime is not common.

    Clubs and Activities

I won't bother to list all of the different clubs Whittier has to offer. It takes up several pages in the freshman manual, anyway. Suffice to say that we have societies (the equivalent of a fraternity or sorority). We have many varied clubs, from pure entertainment to sports-related to major-related. If you want a club and it's not offered, you can easily start it.

Great for these types of students

Quiet students, first and foremost, do very well at Whittier. If you simply want a calm place to learn and grow, the campus can fit your needs nicely without much difficulty (livelier students don't generally have any problems either, of course, but that's true on most campuses; not so with quiet students). Whether or not you like to party, you'll find that Whittier can meet your needs. There are parties which can get very upbeat and slightly rowdy, but never to the point that students who don't frequent such events are likely to feel uncomfortable. Most importantly, students who want to know the people around them do well here. You WILL know your professors, you WILL know your classmates, and they WILL know you. There's very little avoiding that. It's a close, tight-knit environment, and the students who are willing to embrace that are the happiest.

    Bang for the buck

Whittier is expensive. Close to $50,000 dollars with expenses included. Offsetting that is a generous pool of financial aid money, but you are likely to end up paying in the thousands of dollars regardless. Whittier has many opportunities and amenities, but it is a small school, and doesn't offer everything that a larger university can. On the other hand, you will get a much more personal education. Your professors will know your name, and will be better able to guide you towards personal understanding. They also happen to write fantastic letters of recommendation. On balance, Whittier costs a lot, but what you pay for is worth it: you get real understanding, rather than just a degree given by a distracted administration to faceless students. (In case you were wondering, you get the degree, too).

    What to do for fun

The college itself sponsors many different events. There are seasonal festivals that may include anything from carnival attractions to bouncy houses. There are musical groups and influential speakers who are frequently (think weekly or even more commonly) called to come to campus and entertain or educate students. There are clubs and activities aplenty (see Clubs and Activities below). Facilities include a gym, a pool, and several sports fields, all of which are available for student use. The surrounding city of Uptown Whittier has what amounts to a small shopping district just a couple blocks from the campus. Included are a theater, a book shop, a candy shop, multiple restaurants, and several clubs and bars (oftentimes, but not always, having taken a rather bohemian style as a reflection of the clientele).

    Food and Dining

The main source of on-campus meals is the Campus Inn, or CI. The CI has unlimited food, free soft serve, and vegetarian options. It is not gourmet cuisine. It is usually decent, and gets to be pretty good if there's an event going. Students who find they can't handle CI food constantly can buy flexible meal packages which include options at The Spot, which sells traditional American foods such as chili dogs and bacon burgers. Off-campus, there are fast food restaurants such as Subway and In-N-Out within easy distance, as well as traditional restaurants, which are somewhat pricey (perhaps $10 for a meal) but serve superior food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are small. The dorms are expensive. As with most colleges, the dorms are not especially comfortable, feature communal bathrooms, and can occasionally be louder than they should. On the plus side, the communal areas where people normally make noise are not directly adjacent to the rooms. Dorm buildings are split by class, so upperclassmen have nicer dorms and fewer antics which they must endure. All of the dorms are also fairly clean, and usually in good repair.

    Academic Rigor

Most of your professors will be doctors in their fields. They know what they're talking about, and nothing they teach you will be especially challenging for them. That means that, as a general rule, they expect you to learn quickly. For some students, that's not a problem, and the quick pace is often enjoyable. For others, study groups or tutoring may be called for. Luckily, the professors are also very helpful and willing to help struggling students outside of class. The campus has a tutoring center and can offer you skilled tutors free of charge.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Don't ditch class. Your professors will notice. Even if it's a lecture hall class, they will notice. Many classes have an attendance policy. If you can't be bothered to show up, you may suffer academically. 2. Have fun...reasonably. If you burn yourself out partying your first year, the rest of your college experience may be unpleasant. If you don't go out at all, you may suffocate in boredom. Find that happy medium, and enjoy your college experience. 3. Do your best to get to know your classmates and professors. There aren't really enough people for you to easily get lost in the crowd, so if you don't reach out, or if you rebuff friendly attempts at socialization, you may find that you've isolated yourself without meaning to do so. Life will be easier and more enjoyable if you cultivate positive relations. 4. Get involved. Join clubs. Try out for a sport. Volunteer. You'll meet new people (see the above statement for how not to be a social pariah), have unique experiences, and make great friends. It's the difference between having a fantastic college life and having four more years of high school.

    In three sentences

Whittier has a wonderful campus community, varied (free) resources, generous financial aid funding, and a body of professors who genuinely care about their students. The only potential drawback is that it's also very small; you will know most of the other students by your third or fourth year. If the small liberal-arts college life appeals to you, then this is a truly fantastic option.

    Campus Safety

Our campus safety works 24/7 to protect the people and the property. They respond to all emergency calls and non-emergency calls, as well.

    Greek Life

Whittier' College has ten fraternities and sororities, but we call them societies. Five of them are for women, four are for men, and one is co-ed. They focus on academics, leadership, and service but they also create lots of fun!

    Clubs and Activities

We have a numerous amount of diverse clubs such as sports clubs, affinity clubs, councils clubs, major-related clubs, hobby clubs, honor societies, political clubs, spiritual clubs, and service related clubs.

Great for these types of students

Whittier College is the perfect place for people who don't want to get lost in a sea of students. It is for those who wish to be noticed and actually known by name to their professors. The campus is also small enough to walk around, you wont get lost, and it is quick to get to class. We also have a Whittier Scholars Program which allows students to create their own majors and education course.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Here at Whittier College we have a tradition that you can actually see if you drive by the campus. The students paint a large rock that protrudes from the lawn by the student lounge. Sometimes it is painted for events and sometimes it is painted to celebrate birthdays!

    Bang for the buck

Whittier College may seem pricey for some students. However, they offer great financial aid help. They can also offer scholarships and work-study money. You get to work on campus and use the money toward expenses like those annoying book fees!

    What to do for fun

There is always something to do on campus, whether it be joining a society or a club, going to a party or a dance, or just hang out with a group of friends to play a sport or a game. If you want to do something off campus you can head over to Uptown, which is only a couple of blocks away. There are shops, restaurants, a movie theater, etc. We're also near Disneyland, Knott's, and L.A.

    Food and Dining

Some students complain about the food not being all that great or that they get tired of it. However, I think that we are fortunate to have a variety of good food in the cafeteria. We also have a shop called The Spot for students who don't have a meal plan, need a snack, or just want something different to eat. And if that doesn't satisfy your taste buds, then there are a lot of restaurants and fast foods places that are close enough to reach by foot.

    Dorm Life

I am a commuter, so I don't know what dorm life is like personally. With that being said, I can say what I have heard from other students. Socially, living in the dorms is great because you get to know the people who live around you. You can walk to the cafeteria or to classes with the people who are in them with you. There is even a lounging area where you can all hang out, play some games, or watch anything on TV.

    Academic Rigor

The difficulty of the courses offered at Whittier College differs depending on many factors. It can depend on course level, the professor, and the subject matter and how well you excel or work hard in it. For the most part, the courses are usually challenging. You will have to really apply yourself, but as long as you pay attention, do the work, and ask for help when needed then you will be fine!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking into attending Whittier College (and even if you're not) and you live in the area, I strongly suggest that you check to see if your high school is involved with our Mentors Program. If you sign up, a student from the college will guide you through the process of preparing for college. They can also invite you to check out the campus, or to other Whittier College related events. They may even hang out with you outside of school. Once accepted to Whittier College, we have orientation for all freshmen and transfer students to make the transition much easier. You are assigned mentors and an advisor for guidance and any help you may need.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is a great school for students who want a closer relationship with their professors because class sizes are very small. The campus is set in the suburban city of Whittier, where it is beautiful, quiet and near numerous shops and entertainment. The campus itself is amazing because the faculty are all very helpful and the activities are varied, fun, and always happening!

    Food and Dining

The food and dining at Whittier is mediocre.

    Dorm Life

Dorm Life is an amazing experience at Whittier. The rooms are much larger than typical college dorms and the Residential Life staff is amazing. Dorm life, especially as a freshman, is the best way to make friends and get involved on campus. Upper-classman housing is also very nice.

    Academic Rigor

Academics at Whittier are what you make of them. Classes are not very difficult, however they can be academically challenging. Whittier is not a school where you can get by with doing nothing and because of the small classes it is practically impossible to skip class. As in all schools you will have both good and bad teachers. Thankfully I have experienced more good than bad. One thing that students who will be attending Whittier should be aware of is that the academics are very focused on developing writing skills. Personally, I do not enjoy writing essays, so when I found this out I was a bit nervous. However, teachers plan very well so that students are not procrastinating on essays and the grading system is much easier than I expected. The best part is that many teachers allow rewrites, so if you fail to impress the first time, you can get their feedback and try again.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a prosepctive student my first piece of advice is to find as much financial aid as possible. Whittier as an amazing school, however, the cost of attendence is quite a burden. The good news is that the school offers a whole lot of financial aid, but still it is smart to apply for as many scholarships and outside money as possible. Another piece of advice is that for living options, especially as a freshman, the best place is on campus. Commuters are not as involved in the college life as those who live on campus. My last piece of advice is that, if you can, try and join a sport. The athletic program is a very close group of amazing people. Joining a sport is your best bet at making a good group of friends and helps with getting involved on campus. Societys are also a good option for those who are not into athletics.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is great for a student who is looking for a small school with a closely knit student body. Whittier offers incredible oppurtunities to get involved both on and off-campus. I am in love with this college and am so glad I chose to come here.

    Campus Safety

They're everywhere. Good for parents, unfortunate for college kids who want to go crazy in a dorm room. It's impossible to get away with anything, but it's also incredibly safe.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs, but most are just for people to put on their resumes for grad school, other than the societies.

    Bang for the buck

Expensive, but they give a lot of academic and talent scholarships. You can get money for being smart or for being talented in theatre tech, acting, singing, and instrumental music (not sure if that's still around).

    What to do for fun

We go to uptown a lot and do things like eat and shop in the adorable boutiques. Not a ton of parties, but there are a lot of dances thrown by societies that are basically parties the school sponsors. Penn Park is a rad place that a lot of people chill at. Honestly most of the places we go require driving. Walking in uptown with just girls can get kind of dangerous at night, so driving is sort of a must. It's also pretty close to LA, so on the weekends a lot of people drive up to the clubs.

    Food and Dining

Not accommodating to people with severe allergies.

    Dorm Life

The freshmen dorms are awful. There are maintenance people who are supposed to clean them, but I have never once seen them do anything other than vacuum. It's alright if you have a double, but many of my friends have to live in a triple, which is a double with a bunk bed. Upper classmen dorms are ok, but there was recently an infestation of cockroaches in one of them, so they're still pretty shady.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are difficult, but the student body is about average. I was in the top 5% of my hs class and this school has been somewhat challenging, but I was still able to easily get all As. Many students come here who were not at the top of their class and have a difficult time.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to the John Whittier Greenleaf Scholarship competition if you are invited!! Almost all of my tuition is covered thanks to doing this. Great backup school that become a front runner because of money. The dorms aren't as nice as the tours make them-especially for freshmen. Also the Campus Inn comes across as very accommodating to dietary restrictions like allergies, but they are not! If you have a severe allergy (such as gluten intolerance) think very hard about whether this is worth it. There have been multiple times that I haven't been able to eat.

    In three sentences

They give out tons of merit based aid, but will charge you for EVERYTHING from a clogged toilet to parking in the wrong spot. A very close-knit student body. Not a party school, but we still have fun.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to learn, want to get to know the professors, and don't want to be a face in the crowd.

    Tips for prospective students

These is substantial financial aid, and the better your gpa the higher merit scholarship you will get, and it is guaranteed for 4 years so high GPA greatly lowers the cost of attendance. If you don't have stellar grades however there are many automatic scholarships and endowments the school can get for you. A little proactivity goes a long way though.

    Bang for the buck

The college is very expensive but it doles out a substantial amount of financial aid. Considering the price of other private schools the price is great. Especially considering it is staying small allowing the great relations with faculty and small class sizes.

    Am enjoying being here

This is a double edged sword. The school every couple years has being adding new things and making existing buildings better. However the semester it occurs there is noise and a temporary inconvience of the facility. But due to this there is a very large campus inn that looks spectacular and the pool is currently under renovation but it will be greatly improved. Outside of the temporary inconvience the teachers and location is very enjoyable.

    Am learning a lot

Whittier College has a diverse teaching staff and they are undeniably helpful. This is a very small campus and the teachers get to know you personally. Even if your goal is to learn beyond the ciriculum the teachers are willing to sit down with you and answer questions beyond the scope of the class if you wish to understand better.

    Bang for the buck

Whittier is relatively lenient on granting its students with money, especially in regards to the student's GPA, which further influence and encourage the students here to earn good grades. Additionally, the curriculum at Whittier is respectable as it is challenging and the students will learn a great amount of information in whichever classes they decide to take. Great for these types of students

Whittier is great for students who are looking for a challenge, but are ready for a small learning environment. Obviously, you can see how many students attend the school before you come, but it wasn't until I got there that I realized how small the campus felt. At first, it was a turn off for me, but once I realized the benefits of a small school I really liked it. You can get to know you're graduating class, it's easier to make study groups and friends, your teachers can remember you when you see them on campus, and you will most likely never get lost. If you're looking for a small school, Whittier is a really great one.

    Tips for prospective students

The best advice I can give is to get involved. I know people tell you that all the time, but it's really true. Try seeing what is going on in the campus, join a society, get a work study job, audition for plays or sports, talk to the people on your floor. All of these things are going to help you get adjusted to school so much faster and ultimately make you happier as a student. There are many different types of people at school, and groups to join. There is definitely a place for everyone if you're willing to look for it.

    Bang for the buck

Paying for school is very difficult. Whittier offers so much financial aid though. My first year of college, I was making very doable payments and they financial aid office was always so helpful to me. It's a private school, so of course it's going to be expensive. But it's completely worth it. The environment and relationships you get to make with your professors make a truly unique college experience. Professors really value education and are going to want to help you find a way to pay for school.

    Am enjoying being here

First semester, freshman year is a hard transition for any college student. Coming from so far away, it was even harder. I wanted to transfer after my first semester, because I was so homesick and I felt there was nothing to do with my time. I was wrong. By Jan Term and second semester I was doing plays and getting more involved, and starting to really love my time at school. Getting involved helped me meet more people, which allowed me to have more opportunities. I began visiting the beach, going into the L.A. area, going to Disneyland, even exploring uptown Whittier. Even though it was a rough start, after the adjustment period, I really started to love my time there.

    Am learning a lot

Whittier College is definitely a place where you are constantly learning a lot. Classes are challenging, fun, but also manageable. In my one year there, I have learned so much through my classes, but also about others and the world that we live in. I had interesting and stimulating conversations with peers and professors and it proved to be a really great place to learn and explore. I like having to take classes for the Lib Ed requirements because it allowed me to take classes I didn't even know I was interested in until I was in it. After coming home from my first year, I realized how much I truly learned.

    Tips for prospective students

Invest in an annual Disneyland pass because since it is located almost 20+ minutes away you will be very tempted to go as often as you can.

    Bang for the buck

Whittier is definitely worth the cost plus they make sure that you have enough grants to lower the cost your family/ you have to pay. In addition to work study jobs that make it easier and payment plans.

    Am enjoying being here

I was accepted to 12 different colleges and university and I decided to go to Whittier College. I just completed my first year and it was the best decision I could ever make. The campus is very welcoming and there are so many ways to get involved. The main focus is on community and Whittier does feel like a little community full of diverse students from various cities, states and countries.

There are so many courses to take that range from Self Defense to Peoples and Cultures of Latin America. In addition Whittier is one of the only schools that has a program to create a major that fits exactly what you want your future career to be called the Whittier Scholars Program.

Great for these types of students

I would say that this college is great for business, political science, and theater majors. Of course, everyone is welcome. That is what contributes to it being a diverse college.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out this school as early as you can and ask for a tour. They are more than helpful in showing you around. Do not be afraid to apply here, especially if you are a local. If you do decide to attend here, make sure to get involved!!

    Bang for the buck

What most applicants do not realize is the amount of financial aid that Whittier provides for its students. Although it can get pricy with room and board and tuition, the financial aid does make a huge difference. Also, I find that I am having an easier time getting calsses than some of my friends at community colleges, UCs or cal states. Furthermore, the location is great since it is close to several malls and near amusement parks like Disneyland and Knotts just in case you need a break from studying.

    Am enjoying being here

I am living off campus right now which explains why I do not give this section five stars. If you get involved with campus clubs, activities, or sports, you are sure to love being here. For being a smaller school, it still has so much to offer, such as, theater, sports, dances, and even radio.

    Am learning a lot

Attending Whittier College is an incredible opportunity for learning. Whittier offers two main paths of study, either a liberal arts education or Whittier Scholars Program. I am currently a sophomore and I am following the liberal arts path. I think this is a great way of learning because we become more understanding, knowledgable individuals so we are not ignorant of other topics that will present themselves in our future. The teachers are more than willing to help if you take the time to visit them and communicate how you are doing or if you do not understand.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is really helpful and handy. If you ever need a ride, make sure to have Campus Safety's number in your phone. They are all really just looking out for the students at Whittier to make sure everyone is safe!

    Greek Life

We have societies on campus which are basically Greek Life. If you're into that sort of thing, get ready for 6 weeks of pledging and not hanging out with anyone outside of your friend group who isn't pledging. You also have to wear the same outfit for 6 weeks..kind of weird.

    Clubs and Activities

Big things on campus, like dances and such, will be no surprise to students since you get a lot of e-mails on a regular basis from the Residential Life and L.E.A.P. office about them. From middle of March - end of April, there is a dance EVERY Friday. The dances are hosted by societies and clubs on campus, and are pretty fun.

Great for these types of students

Outgoing, Sun-loving, academically seeking, outdoorsy, city-loving, community-loving, small classroom-oriented students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The rock: a rock that is painted differently everyday (mainly my societies on campus)

    Bang for the buck

They give super good finical aid scholarships, so get on that! Turn your FAFSA in on time! The problem is...as you go up your years at Whittier, (or so it is said) that your finical aid goes down. People do drop out/transfer because it is just too small to handle, so you really need to be committed to going here since it is around $54,000 a year or so with flying/driving costs and all. It really depends on what you get for a finical aid package.

    What to do for fun

I play a sport, so I have a lot of sports related fun things to do.

    Food and Dining

I honestly don't have a problem with the food at the Campus Inn (CI). There is also The Spot which is more burgers/quesadillas/snacky foods. You have to learn to be creative or the meals can get boring fast. The hours are kind of weird at the CI and The Spot, so stock up on things at your dorm. There's an omelet line in the morning from 7am-8:45am, and if you want your omelet...get there early!

    Dorm Life

If you're a freshman and you want your sleep...try to get into Johnson Hall. Stauffer (the bigger dorm on campus for freshman) is super loud...so get ear plugs...also get a fan..multiple fans! It's hot..especially on the third floor! You can't live off-campus until Senior Year, so don't even try if you're a sophomore or a junior. Try to get a group of friends that you make your freshman year, and try for a Harris dorm for sophomore/junior year where you can all live together!

    Academic Rigor

It varies. If you're really interested in the class and the subject, get intererested and do things! Go to the library, it's a great place to study there are so many desks/tables/comfy couches! You'll love some professors and not. Just find something you love and get into it. Academically, it isn't that challenging unless you decide to slack off.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved on all sorts of things! Don't limit yourself. There are a lot of sports teams, so if you play a sport and want to in college...get ready for a lot of work ahead of you! Try to get friends on all different groups, and be open to meeting new people. It's a small campus, so you meet people quickly.

    In three sentences

College is what you make it and Whittier is defiantly a full circle of the college experience. Since it is a very diverse campus, you get to meet a lot of different people all the time. Everyone is really friendly on campus and teachers and students are always willing to help you if you need it. It's a tight-knit community, so make sure you want to go to a small school and visit before you decide. Overnights really give you a sense of the school.

    Campus Safety

There are a lot of them for a small campus... but not out to get you like at big schools. A huge help when you need them to be and create a safe enviornment.

    Greek Life

Not greek affiliated. For how small of a percentage of students who participate they have a large presence on campus usually through events they put together that are open to everyone. Not your typical stereotype either.

    Clubs and Activities

get involved! Societies, sports, intermurals, clubs, events, gatherings

Great for these types of students

Lots of diversity but it is about 75% athletes and liberal artsy people

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there is a new pool! awesome and open to everyone

    Bang for the buck

It is what you make it. A waste if your not involved but completly worth it if you keep yourself busy.

    What to do for fun

There is never a lack of things to do. Whether it is a school sponsered event on campus or off(they get creative and crazy sometimes too), to what the surrounding LA area has to offer. Beach 25 min, Slopes 45, LA 30, disney 30 +other schools!

    Food and Dining

Only two places to choose from but that makes it the most common place to find people. They cater to everyone though as far as tastes go.

    Dorm Life

Minimal quality facilities, but hey it's college and your living with 100 of your closest friends. It is really easy to meet people in the given enviornment. By the end of the year you could know everyone. Doors are always open and people around to talk to.

    Academic Rigor

Small classroom size allows you to create a strong relationship with proffessors, students and the material you are aquiring.

    Tips for prospective students

Look at a variety of schools. The culture at this one is different than you might expect a typical college to be but thats what makes it so glorious.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is a diamond in the rough. It is a small school with the view of a big city that has a lot to offer. Nothing can substitute experience; at Whittier the tight community ensures you will not want a to replace it.

    What to do for fun

Disneyland just 30 minutes away, L.A. close by, and cafes, shops, an movie theatre located in walking distance

    Food and Dining

Overall the food is not so good. Breakfast is the only meal that satisfies, other than that lunch and dinner are appetizing on occasion.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are very poor. The freshman dorms have no air-conditioning, which can be bothersome during hot days. The school also crowds students by creating triples out of double rooms.

    Academic Rigor

The academics here overall is good. The college provides a well rounded academic curriculum that is challenging yet feasible to undertake and encourages students to broaden how they think and see the world.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students would want a car at this college. It gets dead over the weekends with nothing to do at the college.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is a Liberal Arts College that offers a well-rounded academic curriculum, and takes interest in their students through the close relationship of student and teacher. It is definitely a welcoming school that creates a sense of close community, yet lacks in its facilities and student life.

    Campus Safety

Whittier is small in size making it simple to secure. However, they spare nothing for the safety of their students and have several measures implemented to insure this that incoming students are introduced to through the registration process.

    Clubs and Activities

Whittier has an abundance of clubs and activities. One will never be bored or not have a group to fit in with.

Great for these types of students

Students who like an intimate setting for learning. Students who enjoy serene campus life. Students who are study oriented and focused. Whittier offers such a diverse foundation of majors and classes that any student could find their way here easily.

    Bang for the buck

Whittier offers a quality education that is quite sensational for it being such a small school. Students are given the opportunity to get to know their professors on a far better level than students at much larger schools. Also, the education is just a good if not better.

    What to do for fun

I find Whittier to be an interesting city that is fun to explore. It's quaint and has a lovely spray of stores for shopping and a classic movie theater right down the way. Whittier is also not that far from major attractions in California such as theme parks, and historic sites.

    Food and Dining

Whittier has a dining hall of its own, but if one was unsatisfied with those selections, they could always choose to eat from one of the many nearby restaurants. There is always somewhere to satisfy the needs of the students.

    Academic Rigor

Whittier's student body is comprised of some of the best academics of all types of backgrounds and standings. One would never be without if they chose to attend Whittier. The library is vast and full of wonderful research sources. Whittier also offers a wide range of majors and class options to suit the fancy of any attendee.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the college as soon as possible so that one can see if the atmosphere suits them. Get to know your counselor as their guidance can really help through any rough transitions. Know what you are interested in learning because freshman are required to take a specific seminar course of their choosing based off of their interests. It also links to an introductory class that can be apart of ones major.

    In three sentences

Whittier college is a small but wonderful school. The campus is beautiful and the people are friendly. The atmosphere inspires one to learn due to its richness and abundance of academics.

I think maybe some of the team left but most of the crew is really cool. You can actually talk to them, they're not only there as cops

    Greek Life

I don't know much about the societies at the school, they are not like big Greek groups that run the school or anything. But I know my best friend just became a lady this year and I'm so proud of her. Shout out to the A's they are pretty cool.

    Clubs and Activities

The thing I like about this school is that they have a lot of different activities and clubs to join, something for everyone. And if there isn't something you like it doesn't take much for you to start something.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of clubs and activities available which is a big plus, everything from an ultimate Frisbee team and sports teams, to hula and hip hop teams/ clubs, to academic and cultural groups/ clubs. And if there is something that's not available make it up.

    Food and Dining

There are two different dining halls; the CI buffet style and The Spot' which is more cafe style. pretty good choice of food, only thing is the buffet style food options may b kind of bland (but the food is for everyone so that's pretty normal, either bring your own seasonings or use the ones there.) Breakfast is always the best in my opinion.

    Dorm Life

The freshman dorms are always going to be kind of loud due to freshman's' new found freedom but its clean, has a cooking area, lounging area and plenty of opportunities to meet dorm-mates. lots of Sto-Jo parties and gatherings.

    Academic Rigor

Definitely a lot more of a work load than say high school, I guess for being a liberal arts school but plenty of professors and students around to help out.

    Tips for prospective students

Being a small school, things get around pretty quick which is both good a bad depending on how you look at it. Be prepared for the work load, the professors say things like I know I'm not your only teacher, I know you students have lives.... but there is still going to be quiet a bit of work, projects and readings.

    In three sentences

It's a good sized school not too big or small. There are a lot of activities and clubs to join to meet new people and have fun. has a diverse group of students and professors.

    Greek Life

Whittier is unique in that we don't go by the greek system, we have societies rather than fraternities or sororities. I pledged this past year for the Franklin Society, the oldest society at Whittier College, and it was the best thing I've done. Being part of this community is awesome and I would really suggest new students take a good look into it. It's all about getting involved and putting yourself out there.

    What to do for fun

There is tons to do for fun at Whittier. You can join a club, such as the Dance Team, or find some jobs on campus, such as QCTV. There is a great variety of sports teams and if you are interested in the arts the Shannon Center has tons to offer as well.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is always on campus.

    Greek Life

Whittier College does not participate in the Greek system, however we have our own Society system. It is smaller than the Greek system and it provides closer interaction among current Society members and the alumni. There is a very close connection among current members and alumni which is highly useful for post graduation.

    What to do for fun

Los Angeles, Long Beach, and other Souther California cities are located not too far from the college.

    Food and Dining

    Food is typically good.

    Dorm Life

Overall the dorms are relatively great to live in. They provide a great environment for students to learn in and out of class.

    Academic Rigor

The rigor varies from student to student. Whittier College is a writing intensive college and it requires plenty of writing from its students. The College stresses the ideas of being able to communicate well, both verbally and non-verbally. It also depends on the student's major.

    Tips for prospective students

It is best to just be yourself. More than anything, the college looks for an atypical student who is highly engaged with the community and looks forward to growing in many different aspects, both as a student and an individual.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is a prestigious liberal art schools focused on training students to become well-rounded, intelligent, open-minded individuals. Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We are know for our famous Rock in which is usually spray painted for up coming events or by societies.

    What to do for fun

There are many things to do on and off campus. There are intramurals in which students can participate in and compete against others. Clubs plan trips to the beach, Disneyland, theater shows to get students to mingle with one another.

    Food and Dining

There is a cafeteria on campus in which students can eat by purchasing a meal plan. We also have a place called the Spot in which is a mini mart to buy different food selections. There are other food places that are within walking distance from the school.

    Dorm Life

Students are able to live on campus, rent apartments from the school or live on their own that is within 25 miles. Freshman and Sophomores are usually grouped together in dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Entering college they do give students a good workload of homework in which students are constantly busy by it. The professors do give homework in which to prepare students for their specific major.

    Tips for prospective students

    What to do for fun

As mentioned above there are a good number of social gatherings and activities that are offered by the college. Living on campus is the best way to find out about these event since they are usually discussed among the students that go there. Another way to find out about certain events is to search on the college web site.

    Food and Dining

There are mixed reviews from the food on campus, especially with regard to the main eating area known as the campus inn. The food there is based on being healthy so there is little focus on making the food actually taste good by the use of spices and butter. When I ate there I found myself eating the pepperoni pizza most of the time and since it was costing nine dollars per lunch at a buffet where not much is appetizing, I found myself eating off campus. It is unfortunate that if you plan to live on campus you are obligated to pay for a meal plan that you may not want to use.

    Dorm Life

Being that I live off campus and have had experience in the dorms with fellow college students, from my observation there is little privacy in areas like the bathroom where the showers are part of the restroom in both the men's and women's restrooms. The dorms are priced based on how many people you want to live with, more people in a dorm pay less than a person living by themselves. There are a good number of activities offered on the campus and those who live in the dorms are more likely to hear about such event and connect with their peers.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers are all very knowledgeable, most having a doctorate degree. While classes at times can be very challenging to be able to keep up with note taking and following along with the material, it is still information that is usually found in resources such as books and the internet that can be learned ahead of time since most of the time the topics are listed in the syllabus provided the first day of class.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you take advantage of financial aid, especially in the forms of grants and scholarships, only resorting to loans if it is necessary since the interest fees can be a burden. Take care of all the enrollment steps early and plan ahead to get all your resources in order before school starts.

    In three sentences

It is a small school focusing on the liberal arts although they do offer other paths such as an engineering program and a whittier scholars program which may not focus so heavily on the liberal arts. The class sizes for the most part are small however I have seen my share of packed classrooms for those in popular majors such as my own in psychology. Although it is very expensive being a private college, it is a good place for a healthy college education.

Great for these types of students

Whittier College is great for students that like to be part of a small community and that enjoy smaller classrooms, which means that you get more individual attention. This school is perfect for students that are ready to leave the overcrowded classroom, which make one feel like just another student in the class.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for the rigorous work, as you will no longer get by with the bare minimum. College - in general - asks more of students and this is preparing them for the workforce that will expect going above and beyond with your work. Attendance is crucial in college, as it not only affects your grade but your understanding of the course. Professors are no longer going to hold your hand and take you through all the steps, rather they will guide you to the correct path and let you choose if you want to take it. Most importantly, do not procrastinate because then you become overwhelmed when you glance at the piles of work that you have to do. It is best to do a bit of homework everyday because it ensures quality.

    Bang for the buck

I feel that the education is worth the money that I am paying. Both the teachers and other faculty members provide a genuine service to the students. The faculty has the students' best interest in mind so they do not waste their time rambling about something that will not benefit the student. Plus the faculty and other members of the college are extremely helpful in all situations, whether it be going to the registrar's office or the business office.

    Am enjoying being here

Although I currently commute to the school, I find that the school has a wonderful atmosphere created by the diverse cultures that inhabit it. I enjoy being at Whittier College because it has a friendly environment that allows students to work with one another. Plus one feels encouraged to visit professors during their office hours as they are helpful and nice.

    Am learning a lot

At Whittier College, there is not a day that I am not learning something new. It offers a wide variety of courses that will meet everyone's needs. I especially found the freshman writing seminar beneficial, as it helped me improve my writing. All the courses offer rigorous work that will keep one busy yet not feeling overwhelmed. This learning community allows one to learn not only from the teachers but the students as well.

Great for these types of students

Any who are looking to really get to know their professors and who want the opportunity to stand out.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of fun things to do since you are so close to LA where you can find just about any sort of entertainment you are looking for. It is also close to amusement parks like Disneyland, Six Flags and Knotts.

    Tips for prospective students

One who is applying here must understand that this school makes it really easy for people that don't even talk to you to know a lot about you simply because it is so small. If you don't want people to know a lot about you or want to hide certain things maybe this type of environment is not the best.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is a small college that really allows you to get to know your professors and classmates. Most professors here highly believe that hands-on learning is just as important if not more than classroom learning.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is very quick to responding to any disturbances. They are great at their job of keeping the students safe and they are also friendly, as well. The students find it easy to get along with the campus officers and it helps us to build a safer environment for everyone.

    Greek Life

Whittier College does not have Greek life, but we do have societies. Societies are pretty similar to fraternities and sororities, but they are not affiliated with the Greek program. There are eleven societies on campus and it is a great way to meet other people and network with other students and organizations.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities on campus for students to join. At the beginning and the middle of the school year, there is a Students Activities Fair for incoming and transfers to see what the school has to offer. We have clubs for science, drama, anime, film and different cultures so students can become knowledgeable about other ethnicities.

Great for these types of students

Our school has many sports teams for people who are athletic. We have the tradition football, basketball and soccer teams like other colleges. We also have sports teams that are not always heard of like water polo, golf and quittage. There are also different clubs that are on campus. Many students get involved with the student government to help the campus become better for everyone.

We have a little festival called Drag Walk and it is for people to let their guards down and have fun, whether gay, straight, lesbian or transgender. In my opinion, this event may seem a little strange, but the respect and higher level of tolerance that the students gave for one another is worth it.

The classes get harder as you progress through your college years, but the teachers and fellow students are there to help. It can get a little challenging, if you do not stay on top of your studies. There are tutors, review sessions and study groups that can help if you need some help.

    Food and Dining

The food at Whittier is not amazing, I am not a big fan of it. But you will not die of starvation there is plenty of restaurants around the school and the spot is a place on campus that has amazing curly fries and good food.

The campus safety is pretty good. They get the job done, and when duty calls, they respond rather quickly. They're also very understanding: if a group of students are using a study area after it's supposed to have closed, they'll let the students stay there a few extra minutes before they kick them out.

The Rock has been a campus icon that has existed for quite some time. It inspires a lot of school pride, even though all it is is a rock that has something different painted on it every day.

    Bang for the buck

The prices are rather high to get in, and for everything afterwards, but it's definitely worth the quality of what the college provides.

    What to do for fun

    Dorm Life

The dorms provided are clean and tidy, and the beds very comfortable. Most students in adjacent dorms tend to keep quit when needed, and they're always willing to befriend a fellow dorm mate.

    Academic Rigor

    Campus Safety

On the first day, everyone is given the numbers for Campus Safety and for emergencies. The phone numbers are repeated during Freshman Orientation meetings and floor meetings many times. The Campus Safety officers are also really nice.

Great for these types of students

Whittier College is great for those who want to be in a suburban area but still be close to all the fun of Los Angeles and those who want diversity and to be close to other cultures.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The rock. People made such a big deal about it in the beginning, but it's nothing, really. It used to be a huge boulder, but when it was being moved to another part of campus, it broke in half and is a tiny boulder now that gets spray painted every week by the societies.

    Bang for the buck

The merit scholarship and work study do help lower the cost of tuition a lot.

    What to do for fun

    - Party on the weekend - there's usually one more more parties on the weekend, usually hosted by the societies. - Go to Uptown Whittier - there are plenty of shops and stores. - Go shopping - If you're not up for Uptown Whittier, there are plenty of malls that are pretty close if you have a car. - Go to the beach - It's about a half hour drive, more or less. - Go to L.A.!

    Food and Dining

The food is alright. Whittier College's best cultural dishes are Italian and Mexican. There is always the main meal, sandwiches and fries, and the Exhibition, which cooks up better food than the main meals.

    Dorm Life

Freshman dorms are set, more or less, in the middle of the campus, which is a bonus. The rooms are small, as expected, but comfy-looking. One downside is the lack of air conditioning, but I do believe that that is the case only for freshman dorms.

    Academic Rigor

I'm interested in majoring in English, and from what I've seen, Whittier offers some of the best programs and professors for my major. I would say, after being here for a year now, some of the professors are a hit or miss. Some you'll love, some you'll not be a big fan of. However, the professors all have good intentions and actually care about you getting good grades!

    Tips for prospective students

Get good grades, join clubs, and do volunteer work!

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

Campus safety maintains our campus pretty safe but some of the staff members are very rude at times. Additionally they take a long time to open buildings/rooms up when you call them.

    Greek Life

There are a lot of events hosted by societies on campus which I hear are very interesting. It's all very secretive to outsiders so not much can be said. Pledging season is quite a sight though.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs on campus that provide a variety of events. From dances to stand up comedy to cultural events there is an event for everyone on campus. If there arenâ??t any clubs that like you can create your own club or propose changes to any existing clubs.

Great for these types of students

Whittier College is great for students who are interested in obtaining experience in their career of choice. The professors on campus are really great and help you a lot in obtaining scholarships, fellowships, internships, and research opportunities.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

All unusual traditions on campus are related to the societies on campus (Fraternities) which are a secret. There is also an abnormally high amount of squirrels on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Whether Whittier College is worth the money depends on the student and how much you take advantage of the resources. There are scholarships and fellowships available but you have to do the work. Going to every class, attending the various academic and career oriented events, and establishing a network with professors, alumni, and professionals associated with college make the cost worth it.

    What to do for fun

Going to the plays and cultural events is definitely worthwhile. There are various dances, musical events, sport competitions, etc on campus.

    Food and Dining

There are two options available at Whittier College for on campus dining. The first is the CI or campus Inn which offers a salad bar, soup, sandwich making station, and at least one vegetarian and meat entree. There is also a dessert bar and a variety of beverages available. While a bit pricey for students who do not have a meal plan, it offers different choices in a buffet style format. The other dining option is the SPOT which is sort of like a mini-mart (7 eleven style) that offers refrigerated and frozen food as well as fresh meals made to order. Also a bit pricey, the SPOT offers a limited amount of food options with salads being the only real vegetarian friendly option. Luckily there are many off campus dining options. There are many restaurants and fast food joints within walking distance from the campus. For commuters who like to pack their own lunch there are microwaves and refrigerators on campus that can be used to re-heat and maintain you food cool.

    Dorm Life

Compared to other schools the dorms at Whittier College are very nice. Each student receives their own bed, closet space, and desk and is allowed to bring in their own microwave and mini refrigerator. Usually only two students dorm together but there are students who dorm with two or three other people (The advantage of this is that you pay less if you have more roommates). Personally I do not like sharing a room or bathroom with other people, which is the reason for my low rating, but to others the dorm life at Whittier College is probably very nice.

    Academic Rigor

How challenging Whittier College is academically depends on how hard you want to study and what you are studying. There are hard and easy classes available that require students to do a diverse range of assignments. Moreover, don't ditch class at Whittier College as professors will notice and it will affect your participation grade (Yes, many classes have a participation grade so you will be required to participate and attend class!).

    Tips for prospective students

Check out the school and attend one or two classes. The academic opportunities and resources a school provides are the most important. After all you are attending college to learn and prepare for your career not to go to parties and ditch class. You can waste your time without having to pay for college.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is a small campus that offers an intimate experience to its students. The professors on campus truly care about their students and do a great job in preparing them for their careers. Most importantly of all, alumni and friends of the college do help and extend their resources to students.

When you need a car jump-start they assist you and if you are a bit far from college they pick you up from where ever you are. They are also good with keeping the noise level down and security in the dorms.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities: Asian Club Amigos Unidos Black Student Union Halo Halo (Filipino Club) Hawaiian Islanders Club M.E.Ch.A Mid East Connections Physics Club Math Club Psychology Club Students For Education Reform OMEP

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Within the campus there are many clubs that have different traditions. For instance, M.ECh.A one of the organizations values their Mexican traditions and they make events for the students to bring their family members. We also have an Asian Club that brings Asian Night to the campus where there are Asian performances and all you can eat Asian food and you learn from each others traditions.

    What to do for fun

The college is great with having events of all sorts. There are parties and events that clubs or organizations put together for the students. There is also a pool and a gym and some people simply walk down the street to Uptown Whittier where there is a Cinemas for $5 on Tuesdays and all sorts of restaurants.

    Food and Dining

The food in the Campus Inn is good during breakfast and lunch but once you get to dinner, it seems as if the chef got tired and served what was left from lunch. It is expensive to eat in the Campus Inn too.

    Dorm Life

The freshmen dorms are not the best. Whittier College has been around since 1887, so the renovations in the dorms have not really been remodeled. Therefore, the quality of them are not the best. It is good to live on campus because you have access to a living where you can relax but the financial part of the living in the dorms is not ideal.

    Academic Rigor

There are many high expectations for all students in deed. When there is a reading you are expected to participate because the classrooms are so small that they expect you to be engaged.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure that the school offers many grants rather than loans. If you are having family problems do not keep them to yourself because the professors want to understand where you're coming from. Make sure to know the difference between subsidize and unsubsidized loans.

    In three sentences

Whittier College is a small liberal arts private school and it offers many assistance to their students. Whittier College values diversity and involvement along with academics. There is a one-to-one relationship with the professor which really helps many students communication within the classroom.

Financial Aid is fair, but make sure you have some cushion money for emergencies and possible raises in tuition. Apply for scholarships and if you take out loans make sure you know what you are really doing. You can always apply for work study or find a job on or off campus.

    What to do for fun

Attend some of the dances at least once your first year. Join clubs or start your own. Get off campus from time to time and just explore the City or greater LA. Remember things are boring only if you are a boring person, so make the most out of your college life.

    Food and Dining

The food at The Spot ( Flex points from meal plan, cash or debit) is pretty good, but the Campus Inn (meal plan) food is blah. Good options at the Spot, but gets tiring, and the food is not that healthy.

    Dorm Life

First year dorms are not as great as the the upperclassmen dorms (go figure) but you will definitely have some great times and experiences, just respect your roommate(s) and make sure the same goes for them.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure this is the school for you! Schedule a visit to see the campus and get a feel of the neighborhood. If you do not think the area has enough entertainment for you, you can always drive down or hop on the bus to DTLA, Hollywood, the beach (Huntington, Laguna, Santa Monica, etc.) There are not that close, but the commute is worth it!

Parking Permits are available through Campus Safety and free. Buy a meal plan to eat at the Campus Inn. Its an extra cost outside of tuition, but worth it. Live on campus if you can afford the extra cost. Commuting is tiring and hell on gas. Mailboxes are available for all students, so get one so your family can send you mail. The hiring fairs usually happen a few days before classes start and finding a job after classes start is difficult.
