Great for these types of students

This liberal arts university is great for any type of students in my opinion.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to become a very active in activities and clubs and also make sure to remember that school always comes first before anything else. Very important.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is not as bad as i thought it would have been (10,000 a year) comparing to many of the other Universities/colleges. My friends are paying about 30,000 - 50,000 a year for the same exact classes and education.

    Am enjoying being here

Great community. Everyone is friendly you wont ever feel left out. if you are a commuter like myself you will always find something to do on campus. I love it here.

    Am learning a lot

William Paterson University offers an education of tremendous value in a learning community that is committed to providing academic excellence.

    Bang for the buck

I'm really satisfied with the fees. I get financial aid and it covered everything, from tuition fees to books.

    Am enjoying being here

I'm really glad I came here. Every people here are very helpful and friendly. They make it easier for first year students, such as myself to accustom with the college environment. Really enjoying it very much.

    Am learning a lot

My first semester here and I already know more things than my older sister who is a junior in a different college. I amaze my family by giving them advise on subjects that they never thought I would know.

Great for these types of students

    teaching, nursing, business majors

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely visit the school first to see if you really like it. And if you have to take the math placement test STUDY for it!

    Bang for the buck

Considering most schools are around $30,000-50,000, paying only about $11,000 a year is a great deal.

    Am enjoying being here

I commute 45 minutes each way. That takes a little away from the enjoyability. Residents seem to enjoy it a lot more.

    Am learning a lot

I've only taken one semester of classes so far, but I haven't felt as though I'm learning as much as I should be.

Awesome deal! My siblings schools are way more expensive and frankly, I believe education is what you make of it- and William Paterson is a wonderful school and a great way to receive an education without drowning yourself in student loans.

    Will enjoy being here

I am absolutely obsessed with it, and I love the feeling I get when I visit here.

    Will learn a lot

I went to the open house and learned a lot about what it has to offer and i am actually excited to learn!

Great for these types of students

It is great for students that want to be a biology major because they have an amazing biology department.

    Tips for prospective students

First off this school when it comes to those who want to live on campus, try to get into the high mountains, because the overlook buildings are not the best. Also it is a really big commuter school so there is not too much to do on the weekends.

    Bang for the buck

It is a great school and they provide really great programs. The school is not all that expensive compared to others, and it does helps teach the same if not better then some even more expensive schools.

    Am enjoying being here

Freshman year is a year to get used to college life, but they gave me 5 classes, 2 of which required labs, so i could not take i break. I was constantly studying and barely slept since i was not used to my new environment yet, and its hard getting used to something that you are bombarded with.

    Am learning a lot

This school has some great teachers and I learned a lot. My only concern is that my schedule for my freshman year was really hard.

Will deffinitly get your money's worth here. WPU is also a lot more up to date and modern compared to some of these private colleges that you practically have to sell a kidney in order to afford.

    Tips for prospective students

Just be aware that there are a lot of commuters so the community feel isn't what it would be at a school where there are more people that live on campus. Make use of your advisers and your resident directors, they are there to help and DO want you to do well.

    Bang for the buck

As an out of states student, I'm paying more that some of my peers. But I'm not that unhappy with the value of the school.

    Am enjoying being here

There is a huge party atmosphere here, and the oddity is someone that doesn't smoke pot or cigarettes.

    Am learning a lot

I'm really happy with my teachers for the most part. I find that they are available to help and the advisers have been really helpful to me.

    Campus Safety

the police are always riding around campus. there is safety patrol who walks around until around 1am. there is safe ride, which is a shuttle service that rides around campus to take students to their dorms at late hours. this is a very safe and protected campus.

    Clubs and Activities

most activities happen during common hour.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

common hour is tuesdays and thursdays, which is 2 hours out of the day to just chill and hang out on campus. there's no classes for these two hours (12pm-2pm).

    Bang for the buck

not too expensive like other schools.

    What to do for fun

there's many activities to do on campus. there's two gym areas. there's different clubs and groups you could join. there's usually shows going on in the performing arts center. there's usually always something going on on campus.

    Food and Dining

the dinning hall wayne hall, has its good day and bad days. the best option there is the breakfast which is served all day. the downside to the dinning hall is it closes at 7pm. there is a food court that has sbarro, burger king, asian express, and quiznos.

    Dorm Life

all of the dorms are pretty decent. the rooms are organized into suites, which means you and your roomate would share a bathroom with two other people. the dorms are also co-ed. if your 21 and over there separate buildings for you to stay in with different rules.

    Academic Rigor

with any major there comes difficulties. be prepared to work hard for your grades. make sure you keep in contact with your advisor. they are definitely a big help.

    Tips for prospective students

try to do your best on the sat's. if your a.commuter, plan on leaving home early to find parking. if you can, it would probably be easier to stay on campus.

    In three sentences

william paterson university is a great school to go to. there are many academic majors to choose, from fine arts to business. the atmosphere is comforting and relaxing.

    Campus Safety

the campus is very safe, but as with any campus, it is always better to walk with a group if you are going out a night. university police are always available and respond to problems quickly, and there is a student patrol group that walks around at night, goes in the dorms and has direct communication with the police if anything should happen. if you live on campus, there is someone sitting at the front desk 24 hours a day to verify students id cards and sign guests in.

    Clubs and Activities

this depends on the person and how far you are willing to go to get involved in university clubs and activities. there are many clubs that cater to various majors, cultures, and interests. it can be difficult finding out about events on campus as the only system that seems to be used are paper flyers (hence, if you don't see a flyer for a particular event or you overlook something, you will miss out on a lot of things going on). joining a club is the best way to get involved because they all have their own programs and events, so you are more likely to be included that way and aware of what is going on. this is the type of campus where you need to get involved or you will miss out; go to the campus activities office in the student center third floor to find out about types of clubs and get into contact with officers about meeting dates and times.

    Bang for the buck

you will get a great education for a fraction of what other universities cost. if you study hard, utilize the resources available to you (especially the library) and make an effort, you will learn and do very well here.

    Food and Dining

the dining hall food is not great; the student center has some better options but none that are particularly healthy. when you sign up for a meal plan you get a certain amount pioneer express dollars loaded on your student id card (depending on the meal plan you select), and many off campus dining locations accept it. you can add money to it throughout the semester park wayne diner on hamburg turnpike has excellent food and good prices for the amount and quality.

    Dorm Life

i am a resident student, and the only complaint i have about this university is that there really is not much dorm life. it is a commuter school, and those who do live on campus often go home on the weekends. there are some good local places to eat in the area and two bars/clubs once you become of age, but university programming on the weekends is lacking tremendously.

    Academic Rigor

what is difficult and what is not is very subjective and different for every student. i find my courses to be difficult and very reading and writing intensive (majors in the humanities tend to be that way). if you fall behind you will be in trouble no matter what. certain majors such as nursing, biology, and communication disorders tend to be extremely rigorous from what i have heard, but nonetheless excellent programs.

    Tips for prospective students

keep your priorities straight; the type of work you will have varies depending on your major. if you keep your grades up you have the opportunity to apply and receive scholarships each year. don't procrastinate especially with upper level courses. finally, ask questions in class and be an active learner; a lot of the time professors present information to you, but you have to be the one to synthesize it, understand it, and learn something.

    In three sentences

william paterson provides an excellent, well rounded education for the price. the professors are extremely knowledgable in their fields, and most classes are small enough so you can get personalized attention from them. i cannot speak on the rigor of general education courses because i did not take them there, but courses in my major (spanish, english lit, latin american studies) were challenging and i have learned a lot.

    Bang for the buck

It is definitely worth you money ! no other school will give a more social life - maybe other than rutgers. but still WPU is top ranked.

    What to do for fun

I normally go to the lounge and hang out with people , get to meet new people. Sometimes I attend sporting events like soccer games and basketball games.

    Food and Dining

Excellent diner. The staff there prepare the best burgers !!!!

    Dorm Life

EVERYBODY is friendly and nice. Sort of a bit chatty, but people will always make you feel welcomed. The dorms aren't too big or too small - it is just right. Air condition in the summer and heat in the winter...wouldn't be surprised if you oversleep.

    Academic Rigor

Lots of homework to keep you busy and occupied, which makes leisure time even more pleasurable ! Teaching is easy to understand and cope with.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't believe everything you're told about WPU. They say it's a party school - we DO party - but most of the time it is stictly academic. Get to know your professors (email them before the semester begins to introduce yourself). Smile, be as fake as you can haha - it' can be the difference between a B+ and a A-.

    In three sentences

First semester was great. The professors are all wonderful, especially during office hours. Can't wait for Spring.

    Campus Safety

we have our own campus police as well as local police around the campus. also, you can sign up with the william paterson emergency notification system which will inform you about anything that is going on right away.

    Greek Life

it exists; however, i don't know much about it yet. i have just received an email to join them by the end of february, so i will know more afterwards.

    Clubs and Activities

there is a club for everyone and if you don't find one that you like, you can create one yourself. i am in the sife club which is outstanding because it lets you network with many business people while doing good things for the community.

Great for these types of students

the school is perfect for everyone. we have a completly new sience center, the music depatment is also amazing, and the business school which is on a seperate campus (only 10min away from the main campus) is build like a corporate center. also, we have a sales major which hardly no school has that allows you to get filmed while conducting a sales meeting; therefore, you can see yourself afterwards and learn from your mistakes.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

one of our buildings is hunted by a ghost.

    Bang for the buck

over all, i am very glad that i joined this school because i feel like i really am going to be prepared for the professional life after school. lots of our teachers have been working in their field for many years and can therefore give us many real life examples of the things we are studying.

    What to do for fun

we have an arcade right on campus which allows you do have lots of fun with your friends. also, we have a gym, a theater, and a short commute to new york city.

    Food and Dining

there is a lot of options for food on campus as well as around the campus. on the main campus we have a sushi place, a burger king, chinese food, and many more options. also, with your student id you can buy food from other places around town with a student discount.

    Dorm Life

since i am a commuter student i cannot say anything about it; however, some of my friends live in the dorms and they are happy with it. there is a shuttle bus that takes the students between the two campuses which makes it very convenient.

    Academic Rigor

the business schools is aacsb accredited which is recognized all over the world. only about 15% of schools in the world have this high standart of academic achievement.

    Tips for prospective students

i would definitely recommend this school because it is awesome. you have the opportunity to speak to people from all over the world. if you encounter any problems, the school has a great counseling center as well as a health and wellness center right on campus.

    In three sentences

it is an exquisite business school which provided me with great opportunities for my future. the teachers are very helpful if you are a serious student. they have professional enrichment classes which will help you prepare for the real world.

    they're everywhere. all the time.

    Greek Life

greek life is active and alive on campus. there is a good balance. it is strong enough to have a presence, but not strong enough to feel pressured into joining.

    Clubs and Activities

there are a lot of clubs on campus, as well as a school website that keeps track of all the clubs you've joined.

Great for these types of students

if you like diversity, you've come to the right place. probably the one place that will show you how all walks of people can come together and learn harmoniously.

    Bang for the buck

way cheaper than most schools in nj. if you were a good student in high school, expects tons of scholarships coming your way as well.

    Food and Dining

sodexho provides the food. enough said. but there is a food court that is always a good alternative to the routine at the dining hall. the food court has burger king and sbarro, to a name a few. there's also a campus restaurant if you feel like getting a little fancy.

    Academic Rigor

depending on your major, work can be tough. though, wpunj is a tad bit easier than most other schools in nj. regardless, you should know what your signing up for if you're majoring in biology, for example.

    Tips for prospective students

get as much college credits as you can in high school--ap credits, community college credit, etc. you can start off college with some credits in hand and be able to start core classes for your major earlier. plus, this leaves more space and time for a minor or second major, which will always look good on your resume when you graduate.

    In three sentences

wpunj is probably the best bang for your buck. it truly is the university in your backyard. a great place to start your college career.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is not a profound issue. This campus is very secure. I am more terrified of the wild life on campus than anything else.

    Bang for the buck

This is the most cost friendly institution that I have researched. I was interested in experiencing city life however could not afford the tuition for school in that location. This school has given me the opportunity to still experience the city and not be in any major debt.

    What to do for fun

William Paterson is very close to New York City therefore, most people venture off campus and enjoy the clubs, shows, and city entertainment. There are also local bars and theaters which students can enjoy. The campus occasionally offers events for the student body to attend as well.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria food is undesirable at times however there are many options in the student center. There is a system of pioneer bucks which is active at various off campus dining areas. The quality of food varies by the day some are better than others.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is very community oriented. There are nine residents hall which adhere to the needs and desires of various students. Most individuals who reside on campus become well acquainted with other residents who dorm.

    Academic Rigor

Similar to most universities there are a variety of courses. Some in the field of science , business, and political science are very rigorous . However, there are some courses which require minimal effort.

    Tips for prospective students

    In three sentences

William Paterson University can be a whole lot of things rolled into one, like one decent sized burrito. The campus is not huge, meaning you can walk from class to class, minus Valley Road, but it isnt as small as a dot either, considering the traveling WPU shuttles, bridge and entry gates. The perfect way to describe William Paterson University is a community where everyone knows everyone else.

    Bang for the buck

Considering that it is a state school and on the cheaper side, I'd say the cost of admission has been worth it. I'm enjoying my classes, and the faculty is incredibly kind and helpful. I was worried about the social aspect of college life, but even that's going well!

    What to do for fun

They have a lot of on-campus events, like concerts or other programs.

There are student's for campus patrol that walk around at night, but there have been events of people being assaulted. Many of the assaults aren't publicized but most likely you will hear about it from other students.

    Greek Life

Some are more education driven, you have to maintain a high GPA while others you only have to maintain the minimum.

Great for these types of students

Students that are more serious about their education rather than making friends and partying. Most students here commute so many aren't interested in making friends but it isn't impossible. A few friends came here to party, one stayed a semester and transferred out while another joined a sorority and failed out.

    What to do for fun

They provide activities for students to attend. Numerous clubs will have free lunch and some type of entertainment for student's. The French club provided food and a belly dancer for entertainment to raise awareness of Middle Eastern countries that speak French. There are many events associated with Greek life.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall has a somewhat wide selection of food, but if you don't have a meal plan, it costs $7.75 to get in there. Although they claim its all you can eat, the food servers will limit the amount of food you can actually get. The food court is extremely expensive so as a commuter, I've learned to go down the road to any of the numerous food stores or to just bring my own lunch.

    Dorm Life

I personally didn't dorm but a few friends of mine from high school, some of them hated it completely but it was mostly their roommate they didn't like. They offer many activities for students to keep them entertained and to help them make friends on campus. Everyone that loves to live on campus attends all these events.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the programs offered are very serious and you will be dropped if you don't maintain the necessary GPA. Many of the science programs however, are taught by foreign professors, some with very strong accents. Also, some professors are very understanding when student's don't understand the material while other's blame the student's for not studying.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want the college experience, then be prepared to join a sorority/fraternity because most student's here commute. Talk to people you know about their experiences here, and remember that yous might be completely different. Also, when registering for classes make sure you look online to ratemyprofessors.com because that will save your GPA.

    In three sentences

This isn't a terrible school, it has it's flaws but I'd give it an overall 3/5 stars. I personally like the school but people I talk to completely disagree.

Between Student Patrol and the campus police, who always seem to be around, this is a safe place to be. Student Patrol even offers to escort students from night classes to their dorms/cars.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a ton of different clubs and organizations you can join!

Great for these types of students

This is without a doubt a commuter school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I don't know how uncommon this is, but every Tuesday and Thursday, from 12:30pm-2:00pm there is Common Hour, during which time there are very few classes held. This is a time for a lot of club meetings or just downtime for students.

    Bang for the buck

The price isn't too bad - although living on campus is quite pricey.

    What to do for fun

WPU is great in terms of its location. NYC is so close - you can see it from campus. There are also several popular hangout spots near the school.

    Food and Dining

Is college food really ever that good? The food is edible, and there are a lot of different options.

    Dorm Life

This is a largely commuter school, so dorm life is rather dull. Each dorm does have a few events throughout the year, though.

    Academic Rigor

This varies depending on the major, but the workload is generally challenging without being overwhelming.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're commuting, give yourself A LOT of extra time to find a parking spot before class.

If you're going to school for the parties, this probably isn't the place for you. The professors care about their students and will work with them to help them succeed. The student body is diverse and generally polite.

William Paterson is not only a wonderful school to attend, but it is also very fun. I have met my best friend here and made a decent social circle amongst us. Campus Safety

The university tries to provide students with a safe environment by having Police, Security Officers, Guards, Student Patrol and other support personnel around. However, during after hours in the dorms there have been fights in the hallways, and several fire drill pranks due to no cameras in the hallways. There is only but so much that the resident assistants can do to ensure safety but the dorms such as Overlook North and South where there is often a lot of chaos does not have any cameras in the hallways or the right amount of supervision to ensure safety. There have also been several Blackouts on campus due to poor weather conditions. Two examples would be the snow blizzards during the wintertime and Hurricane Sandy that recently past. The generators for the newer residence halls such as High mountain West and East generally always work for the students but the students who live in the older buildings always have to suffer. When the Blackouts occur the police does not permit students from accessing other buildings to charge up their cell phones to contact parents. It gets very frustrating and then students tend to sneak inside the building to get light, heat up food, and most importantly get warmth. For Blackout situations like those there should always be plenty of police to ensure public safety and equal treatment for University community. During the Blackouts held on the campus there is very little public safety service.

Great for these types of students

The university is located in an excellent location for Communication majors who are looking to get internships in New York City or for students who love to travel. The campus is located in the suburban area of Wayne, NJ, which is just 20 miles from New York City. There is a bus that stops right in front of the University's Student Center so within minutes you can experience being in the city. Not only can you catch the bus to visit NYC but you can also visit the Great Falls Historic Park in the city of Paterson and take a nice hike with friends.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30pm to 2pm the University has an event called â??Common Hour. It is a social event that brings everyone together. During these hours there are no classes in session therefore it gives students a chance to attend clubs, workshops, and other events located in the Student Center for people to mix and mingle. They often have DJâ??s play music and serve free food such as Pizza, Hot dogs and Hamburgers for the students to enjoy before going to class at 2pm. This social event is very popular at William Paterson because no other college in New Jersey has a â??Common Hourâ??.

    What to do for fun

There are many events held on or off campus and they usually take place during the day or at night. The university may provide movie nights during the week with food and drinks or even dances located in the Multipurpose room or the Ballrooms within the Student Center. There have been several fashion shows affiliated with several clubs and organizations as well as annual Greek Step Shows that can be exciting for many interests. The university has had comedy shows that will have people laughing in their seat or even game shows where students can compete with one another. Thursday nights on campus is the best night for residents because it is usually the end of the work week for students. Most students do not schedule classes on Fridays so therefore there are off campus parties held at local clubs in Paterson, New York City or even at Frat or Rugby houses. At William Paterson University there is something always going on during the day or even at night to keep any individual occupied.

    Food and Dining

There is a dining hall available for the students or several fast food eateries where the students can choose. The commuters usually choose the fast food eateries such as Burger King, Quiznos, and Starbucks, which is located in the Student Center. The campus restaurant known as Wayne Hall or Speert Hall is generally for the residents on campus that have meal plans. Students are given the option to choose from 8, 9, 10, 15, or 19 traditional meals per week. The best meal plan to have as a resident is the traditional 15 meals per week especially if students are planning to stay on campus for the weekends. You are allowed to swipe your ID for a meal in Wayne Hall only for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The great advantage about having a meal plan to eat at Wayne Hall is that it is all you can eat. In other words you can keep going back for seconds or even thirds. The dining hall also has chefs that cook the food right in front of you so you can see how your food will be cooked on the grill.

    Dorm Life

I encourage students wanting to attend William Paterson University to reside on campus. The resident will be given the opportunity to live and learn with a diverse set of individuals coming from all sorts of racial and cultural backgrounds. There are nine resident halls for the students to choose from. Many returning students choose to live in the Overlook North Hall or Hillside Hall because it is cheaper. Overlook South Hall is for the new incoming freshman and its usually a lot of chaos because the students have just graduated from high school. Matelson, Pioneer, and Heritage Hall are for 21 and older residents or the students must at least 68 credits to be accepted in the building. These dorms allow the students to have a lot more access and freedom. Pioneer and Heritage both provide a kitchen and living room for the students whereas Matelson does not. The Century Residence Hall is where many of the athletes choose to live because the rooms are very spacious and it is located right across from the Recreational Center where the students can have quicker access to the weight room. White Hall is the substance free building where they hold AA meetings for students struggling with alcohol or smoking problems. High Mountain East and West are for students who have earned a 2.8 GPA or higher. There are many advantages to choosing to live on campus as compared to commuting. At William Paterson University it provides the students with independence, convenience and friendships.

    Academic Rigor

The university has many full-time faculty and students have an opportunity to work with professors on research, internships, performances and other creative work. The university has a handful of great resources for the students. For example, the institution has a great writing center for students struggling with their papers or even if you just want someone to proofread your paper for errors or proper word choice there are always people in the writing center there to help during the week. There are also useful tutors for every subject so there should be no excuse for failure. However, there are often tough professors so I would recommend the website ratemyprofesssor.com when choosing a professor for class. Overall, the University encourages a supportive environment for faculty and student collaboration, particularly in the area of research.

    Tips for prospective students

William Paterson University is known as the â??commuter school. The institution has this reputation because during the weekends several students go back home. However, that does not mean the students do not know how to have a good time. A lot of fun takes place during the week because there are always social events such as shows, workshops and parties that are held on or off campus. However, if you are a student who prefers to go to college where all the action takes place during the weekends, William Paterson University may not be the school for you.

    In three sentences

William Paterson University of New Jersey is a public, residential institution that puts forward an exceptional and inexpensive education for students coming from all walks of life. It is a great college for students who are seeking to build diverse connections with their peers. If you are student who would like to commute or dorm you will be able to interact with many people on campus from all sorts of racial and cultural backgrounds.

    Campus Safety

There have been a few horror stories from the past, but recently there has been a large up in security that has left the school very safe. William Paterson recently completed a year without a single reported dorm break in.

    Greek Life

The Greek life at William Paterson is alive but not particularly active. One will occasionally hear about an event or two sponsored by a fraternity or sorority, but by and large the Greeks are invisible.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of different clubs on campus-- there's something for everyone who wants to be involved, and if you can't find your niche then starting your own club is made easy through the Student Center.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who are very independent. Odds are you'll be commuting here, and if you're comfortable without a huge social life then you'll have a good time here.

    Bang for the buck

William Paterson University is very affordable for the education that they offer. With a Pell Grant knocking half of the tuition out of the way, minimal loans are needed to finish off the cost. With a federal grant and a state grant, New Jersey locals can attend school for near-free.

    What to do for fun

There are parties from time to time in the Greek houses. There are lots of clubs that host a lot of events, and there are always guests coming to the campus to speak. For clubs, students will have to go down into Haledon or Wayne for that kind of fun. William Paterson is primarily a commuter school, and so if you don't have a car but live on campus then there isn't a whole lot to do.

    Food and Dining

The school has a large cafeteria with a wide selection of food, though if you are a commuter without a food plan then it can become expensive.

    Dorm Life

I am a commuter, like most of the students who attend William Paterson. Having spent some time in the dorms, however, they are larger than what I've seen in other colleges. There have been some issues with students smoking in the dorms, as well as some infestation issues which have since been taken care of.

    Academic Rigor

The class material is difficult at times, and can be challenging. The only thing that holds the school back from being a competitive academic school is the professors who are very lax when it comes to the degree of excellence in student work. Professors often let students pass in work late, or give decent grades to lackluster work, despite the fact that they can be very demanding with their material.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are going to be a commuter then you will probably not get that second home feeling that lots of university students talk about. If you're looking for a place that you can call your own, it's likely that you won't feel that way at William Paterson if you have to commute. There isn't a huge night life, so if you're looking for a party school then this is not it. The education is high quality despite what you might think according to the entry requirements. The nursing program, and jazz music program are both excellent. Many students travel across the country just to be part of the jazz program.

    In three sentences

William Paterson University is a medium sized school with a thriving school culture. It is largely a school of commuters, which, if you are a commuter, makes the school feel like less of a home and more of a learning community. Though it may not be as fun as many universities, there is a feeling of we are all in this together throughout the campus which sits on the border of three different townships.

    Campus Safety

The campus is very safe. Students here are very nice and respectable. There are campus police available if your walking to your car or dorm late at night from the library or class if you do feel unsafe that will walk with you to your destination.

    Greek Life

I am not involved in the Greek life but I hear that Greek life members participate in various activities and raise money for various causes as well as have a good time. In order to join a fraternity or sorority one must have an established GPA of at least 2.0.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities on campus. There is probably multiple clubs that would fit the personality or ideas of each individual who attends the college. If you get involved in clubs you will really enjoy your college career.

Great for these types of students

William Paterson is great for the students who like to have a small classroom. Classes generally will not have more than 30 people at the most with the exception on certain lecture classes. William Paterson is also great for people who like the suburb environment verses the city environment. Willy P has a big campus but if you notice there are a lot of gardens and green areas. The campus is just really pretty and for the most part quiet.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I am a transfer and it is still the beginning of my first semester here at William Paterson so I am still getting used to everything around here. So far all that I've heard of is that the building on campus where the school's president lives is supposedly haunted. Who knows? Tomorrow is Halloween maybe something will happen.

    Bang for the buck

I rated Willy P a 3 out of 5 because I feel that I am getting my money worth in almost every element of the school besides being a resident. William Paterson is not a super expensive school to attend to begin with. I just feel that student activities should do a little more to increase the resident: commuter ratio. I live two hours away from school so I can go home every weekend like others do, so i would appreciate if more students stayed on campus so that we can enjoy our weekends.

    What to do for fun

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30-2:00 pm we have something called common hour. During common hour nobody has classes. Usually various clubs are holding functions with free food and music. Also you can join various clubs and learn and attend all the events they hold. All the sports at Willy P are competitive division III athletics. There are plenty of fun things to do on campus you just have to look for it.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of options to eat on campus. All on campus dining take your meal plan and pioneer (additional money if your account each semester). The best part of having a meal plan is that there are neighboring restaurants that not only take pioneer but will also deliver!

    Dorm Life

Living on campus has its advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side residents do not have to deal with the heavy daily traffic in Wayne and Paterson. There are also plenty of RA programs and campus activities geared towards residents so that everyone can be acquainted with each other. A few disadvantages of living on campus is that the majority of residents go back home on the weekends; needless to say that weekends are very dead if you dorm. Another disadvantage would be that there is currently only one parking lot to park your car over night with out getting a ticket.

    Academic Rigor

The professors at Willy P will challenge you, but not so you can fail. The professors like to see their students succeed and pass their class. Each professor offers office hours for additional help and if more help is need there are various tutors on campus to also help you out.

    Tips for prospective students

One major tip that I have for prospective students, especially if they plan on commuting, is to sync your school email to your phone. Willy P is very good about keeping students updated whether class is cancelled or if there is an immense amount of traffic due to an accident or local construction.

    In three sentences

I rate William Paterson University of New Jersey a 7 of 10. The professors here are nice and want to see you succeed. The school continues to do construction to make the school bigger and better!

    Campus Safety

Campus security is excellent! There is always one around that can help you out with anything. They are available 24/7 and the security is actually the city's officers. So these are real cops, not rental or pretend! They are traibed to protect and do it well.

    Greek Life

Greek Life can be fun, but I would not know. I am not involved! However, the Greeks around campus seem to be hands-on as well. They are involved in the community and welcome anyone who wants to be involved.

    Clubs and Activities

There are numerous clubs that are offered on campus. You have SAPB (Student Activities Program Board) which deals with a lot of hands-on things around the campus. However, that isn't the only club on campus.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of activities that the campus offers during the week and during the weekend as well. The campus is surrounded by nature so if you're into nature, there are hikes that are weekly. If you are a social butterfly, there are Meet and Greets held as well as parties around campus. There are also numerous clubs that you can join to broaden your circle.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is decent. If you like a bit of a variety, you can expect to find it in the dining hall. It is set up like buffet style with options from pizza, to pasta, to seafood, to breakfast and the list continues. If you just want a quick snack, the student center has a couple of known restaurants such as Sbarro Pizza and Burger King.

    Dorm Life

Living away from home is a new experience but you get so used the freedom that you hardly ever miss home. Remember that you are now an adult and you now have the option of making you're own decision. You are now so independent, that it almost becomes second nature. You become friends with so many new groups of people that you build a friendship and a family.

    Academic Rigor

As a freshman, I would have to say that the academic rigor is challenging but very doable. Some teachers help you along the way while others give you the work and expect you to have the knowledge to do it yourself. It is all about the kind of student you are.

    Tips for prospective students

GO TO CLASS! Do not slack because you are sleepy and hung out the night before. Going to class is a must and some teachers do take off points if you miss class without a legitimate excuse.

    In three sentences

William Paterson is a great school. The teachers are very helpful and want to see you succeed if you are putting in the effort. Overall, the school offers a lot of opportunities being that it is only 10, 15 minutes from New York.

    Campus Safety

I don't feel safe on this campus at all. I'm harassed everyday for being a rich white girl because I'm European American with blonde hair. I'm by no means rich and the attitudes from people are ridiculous here. Campus police is a joke. They're a bunch of power hungry mall cops who ended up here and will harass and pull you over for no reason. But it's okay for them to curse at you and blow through stop signs whenever they want.

    Clubs and Activities

I was a member of a music club and did not enjoy it. The two girls in charge are stand offish and rude so I stopped going

    Bang for the buck

Again, this school was nothing I expected it to be and I feel like I'm wasting money everyday I'm here. Financial Aid made a mistake with my account and withdrew me from all my classes at the beginning of the semester and the only way they'd fix the problem was if I paid $450, which I had to, on top of my tuition. Very frustrating that no on e was helpful or wanted to even explain anything to me.

    What to do for fun

    Leave campus

    Food and Dining

I have never been in Wayne Dining Hall because I don't have a food plan so I can't make a comment on the food. Sometimes before class I get a bagel in the student center and that's always good. food staff aren't friendly and never helpful though.

    Dorm Life

I live in the apartments and the elevators are always broken, or smell like pee and weed. No matter what room you're in, it's going to be very loud all the time and if your window is open you'll hear fist fights, girls screaming, and smell weed all night. This is the second dorm I'm in now here and they're all the same: bathroom is caked with mold that maintenance never gets around to clean.

    Academic Rigor

For the program I'm in, I am taking many useless classes that have nothing to do with the degree with a few actually music business classes sprinkled in

    Tips for prospective students

Look at ALL your options before making a decision on a school. I didn't and now I've wasted time and money

    In three sentences

Not anything what I expected this school to be or what it was made out to be. I transferred here from another school and am so unimpressed with the music program. I'm finishing this semester, and never coming back.

    Campus Safety

Nothing really happens on campus (or nothing we hear about, anyway.) The campus police usually takes care of the illegal drugs in the dorms, etc.

    Bang for the buck

Again, this school is cheap. And the administration really tries to keep the tuition costs down. I think it has more scholarship opportunities for the average student instead of having everything decided by merit.

    Food and Dining

They don't have many choices - most of what's in the Student Center is unhealthy fast food. Wayne Hall can have good food sometimes, but not always.

    Dorm Life

I dormed my first year. I didn't like it very much - but that's probably because it wasn't for me. Might be different for different people.

    Academic Rigor

Some professors are hard-core. My Bio I professor was the best teacher/professor I ever had. If you want to learn, you will find some way to learn from the best professors there. If not, then you'll take easy classes, study when you want to, and just not care. The school isn't the ONLY thing that matters in your education.

    Tips for prospective students

A lot of reviews for this school really suck. It can suck if you really want it to. I'm not saying it's the best school out there, but success in college is an individual effort - you can't only depend on the school. If you remember this and work hard, you'll do well no matter where you go.

    In three sentences

It's the cheapest state school in Jersey. I'm not sure about how it would compare to other schools nearby like Montclair or FDU Teaneck (I've never taken classes in those schools) but if you work hard you'll find the opportunities you need.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety... Campus police is good at enforcing drug and alcohol laws against students but when it comes to actual real crimes they are nowhere to be found. They profile teens and will target you if you hang with a suspicious crowd. They drive on the sidewalks and grass. You will feel safer walking with a group of friends at night because campus police only sit in their cars at night watching the lots and not throughout the rest of campus. If you ever run into the cops watch out for officer Mcniel(younger one) and officer Holland because they Harass everyone on campus. The sarge of campus police is a small lady who uses fear and intimidation To self incriminate and exploit nice innocent students. The rest of the law officials working on this campus tend to follow in her steps and it makes contacting the cops stressful because sometimes you just don't feel safe talking to them even if you are in need of assistance.

    What to do for fun

You can do what everyone else does on campus and engage in recreational drug use. Or you can sit in your dorm and stare at the wall. You can leave campus but only if you have a car because there's no fun places to go to near campus besides the city.(NYC)

    Food and Dining

The dining hall which is ran by Sodexo is terrible. After eating a meal you will be on the toilet for a while. The food court is decent but it's so repetitive and gets boring.

    Dorm Life

Very poor, wifi does not work randomly. Bathrooms are gross. You can take 5 steps and be across the dorm room. So there is absolutely no space. Halls are never cleaned up, the janitors sit in the floor lounge and watch tv. I don't know where out money goes because it doesn't go into the residence buildings that's for sure. Also laundry is terrible, if you leave your clothes in either the wash or dryer for 30 minutes you may get clothes stolen or left on the floor.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are difficult but that depends on the professor. Most of my classes this year have been easy and at times I feel like I am learning at a high school level again.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to party nj college, do not attend here. Facilities are mediocre. The yours will only show you their new buildings and nice dorms. Freshman dorms are terrible. Very small and there is no space. Wifi never works and in the spring they don't turn the AC on so heat is constantly filling the buildings through central air. The Resident directors all take long breaks while working and smoke Tim's of cigarettes right outside of the dorms And it is disgusting. This is definitely a commuter school and you should not look into housing unless you live really far. It's not worth the tuition. If you can, definitely try to aim for other state schools like Montclair which is only half an hour away from William Paterson of Rowan and Rutgers.

    In three sentences

Campus Police ruined my friends and myself mentally. We have no peace of mind. I transferred out after my first year.
