    Will learn a lot

Anybody who is pursuing an education at Alcorn State University will be in a positive learning environment:full of fun and a better understanding about careers all in one.

    Will enjoy being here

Not only is Alcorn State University a great school-it is like your home away from home. The staff is friendly and willing to support you in anyway. The staff as well as the students welcome you with open arms as an Alcornite.

    Tips for prospective students

I am a prospective student myself. I will be attending Alcorn State Univerisity in the fall. Tips I would provide to other prospective students would be as follows: be prepared for the college world and be prepared to learn. If you want to attend a school that will be of assistance to you in any way, Alcorn State University is the place to be/

Great for these types of students

Just because Alcorn State University is a historically black institute does not mean that it is just for black students. Students nationwide should want attend this school because of minority opportunities and for expansion of exposure to different cultures.

Especially if one is pursuing a career in any science program.

    Am enjoying being here

My time at Alcorn is spent studying and with the band. I have fun also and the people are very helpful and friendly.

    Bang for the buck

For being an instate student, it is not that expensive to attend. The cost of attendance is not as high as it seems and refund checks are lovely. :)

    Tips for prospective students

It gets lonely here sometime so disobeying the rules is likely. Do your best to follow rules here or anywhere.

Great for these types of students

Students interested in pursuing a science degree.

I am learning about how to live daily, but more importantly I am learning about the profession I am pursuing.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at Alcorn. It is in the country like my home is, so I feel right at home. It is really nice at Alcorn and everyone seems like family.

    Bang for the buck

Alcorn does not have the best dorms, buildings, etc., but it is a great school.

    Tips for prospective students

If you expect to go to a school in the city and party all the time do not come to Alcorn. If you expect to just party do not come to Alcorn because education comes first and the administrators will not mind sending you home because you flunked out.

Great for these types of students

Alcorn is a great school for students who love the country.

Many of the teachers at Alcorn State University are extremely educated. They will let you know what they expect from you that very first day and are very helpful to their students. For example, if you don't understand something they will take the time to explain. They want to make sure their students are well-educated.

    Am enjoying being here

Alcorn is a place to obtain an education as well as have fun. Although it is in the country events such as parties, probates, games, and concerts will definitely keep you entertained.

    Bang for the buck

Alcorn has great new dormitories and an amenities building. The dorms may be expensive but they are amazing. The amenities building is equipped with a gym, lounge area, and a game room.

    Tips for prospective students

I would like to tell all prospective students to go to Alcorn focused on their goals. This simply means to have fun but not too much fun where you won't be able to achieve your goal that was set before attending Alcorn.

Great for these types of students

Alcorn is a great school for people who want to lead and become successful in life. Alcorn prepares you for the real world.

Alcorn State is a very diverse school with a close bond with everyone on campus. The teachers are available and caring, and there are many opportunities in many different areas to be involved in student activities.

    Tips for prospective students

To prospective students of Alcorn State, it is essential that you begin to prioritize your life at Alcorn. Managing time wisely is the key to success at Alcorn. Adequately balance both academics as well as social.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at Alcorn are challenging but not too difficult to where the students are not able to succeed. The subject area and/or course varies in difficulty along with others, but teachers, professors, and tutors are always willing to assist in helping learn material.

    Dorm Life

Residence life at Alcorn has a recently added complex that houses four to a suite, two to a room. Television, furniture, refridgerator, microwave, etc. are all equipped upon arrival. The facilities of all dorms are kept clean and neat by the students as well as the custodial staff of Alcorn State.

    Food and Dining

Alcorn State has a dining hall that serves foods of all types. The area is a place of not only eating from a choice of an all you can eat menu, but also a place to connect and interact with students and faculty from all over campus. Alcorn's Cafe is the one place where you will definitely see the brilliance of diversity at Alcorn State University.

    What to do for fun

At Alcorn, you can be sure to see groups of friends hanging outside and enjoying each other's company as well as the beautiful scenery of nature that Alcorn possesses. If you are not one of outside engagement, the student union houses a game room where people gather to play ping pong, bowling, pool, or classical card games.

    Bang for the buck

Alcorn is in a location that is a little far from rural civilization which causes vendors to be located on campus to supply everyday needs. These things range from hygenical products to food. You can be certain that every dollar spent in the stores or restaurants located on this campus is a dollar well spent.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One tradition that everyone from the Alcorn family knows is that Chicken Wednesday is the one day where everyone, literally everyone, comes to the cafe.

I really love and enjoy going to Alcorn. Over the years, I have experienced many up's and down's, but overall I believe Alcorn is a great school. Here, students will experience culturally diverse learning and campus activities that will surely prepare them for any obstacles they may face in the real world.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips I would give to prospective students is to prepare yourselves for being at a school in the wilderness, because Alcorn State is literally located in the middle of a wooded area. Have a creative and optimistic mindset, because many times you will have to grab a couple of friends and create your own fun, since the city areas are at least thirty minutes away. You might not want to come to this school if you get homesick very easily or if you feel like you would not be able to handle going to school somewhere that is not in a big city.

    Academic Rigor

The difficulty of the courses at Alcorn really depends on a person's major as well as the instructor teaching a course, as it probably would at any school. Overall, compared to bigger universities, the courses here aren't very difficult, but you WILL learn something if you apply yourself.

    Dorm Life

Alcorn has four new dormitories, two for males and two for females. We also have three older dorms, Revels Hall for males and Burrus Hall and the Honors Dorm for females. The older dorms are okay, but Revels, the males dorm could use some renovation. The Honors Dorm is in it's own area on campus, therefore it is quiet and a great place for female students who don't like noise while they study. Burrus Hall is a renovated dorm and is also pretty quiet, but is in a busier area on campus so there will be some liveliness in that area. The rooms in each of these dorms are not very big, but they provide enough space for two roommates to live in with their necessities. The new dorms, known as the Medgar Wiley Evers Heritage Village, were built a year or two ago & they look nice. The rooms in these four dorms are smaller than the rooms in the older dorms, but are suit-style with four students to a suite, two to a room, a small living/kitchen area and a bathroom. Also, each floor of these dorms are equipped with study rooms. Each dorm is equipped with student i.d. access.

    Food and Dining

The food in our dining hall is not good. Some days we may have something that taste good, but overall, you never know what kind of madness you will be served when you come into The Caf. But, fret not! We also have a mini-Starbucks right next to the cafeteria in our dining facility, and we have a Pizza Hut/Sub Connection that is down the street from the dining facility. And even if you don't wish to eat at those places, there are a few good places to eat that are less than 5-10 minutes off campus. Students also cook in their rooms from time to time. I feel like we could have more options on campus, where we would be able to spend our flex-dollars, but as an Alcornite, you make due with the options that you have.

    What to do for fun

What we do for fun at Alcorn is hang out with each other. Students participate in campus activities as well as just hanging around with their own friends in their personal times. Outside of campus activities, there isn't much to do, so we make our own fun, whether it be by playing card or board games, hanging outside at the park or on the bike trail, or figuring out some type of adventure to go on as I would say. Off campus, you could go to either Vicksburg or Natchez and go to the mall, Walmart, the theater, bowling or other things you could find to do. Or, you could go so far as taking a trip to Jackson if you have the time, because that's the largest city in Mississippi and that is where the best of everything is, as far an shopping and other forms of entertainment.

    Bang for the buck

Overall, if you are independent and optimistic-minded, then you will enjoy your time at Alcorn. It's rough at first, but it is easy to adjust once you gain friends and get to know the staff, instructors and other campus faces. As long as you keep an open mind and stay focused on your work and balancing it with fun, you will absolutely LOVE this school, despite the seclusion of the campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year, we have a bon-fire before we leave for Thanksgiving break. Also, when it's hot out, some students play in the fountain on the campus plaza if it is turned on. We're not supposed to, but hey, it's fun! Students always hang out in many places on campus when they aren't in class, such as the yard also known as the campus green, where most of the trees are, or on the bike trail, at the park near the campus entrance, or at the parking lots and sitting ares of each dorm. Traditionally, first year students are taken by other first year or upperclassmen students to the Windsor Ruins, which is a former slave mansion and plantation, as well as an old historic church that is down the street from the ruins, and to the ghost-town Rodney, Mississippi. All of these places are spooky at night, and are even said to be haunted by former slaves, so it is always interesting to take people who haven't been before, and give them a scare.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who are focused, simple fun-loving, do not mind being on their own and finding things to do on their own. It is hard to survive out here if you get bored or discouraged easily, or if you aren't very friendly.

    Clubs and Activities

At Alcorn, we have various clubs for students to join based on their major and their interest, and if there is a club a student would like to start they can do so. We also try to have different activities going on every month to keep students active and interested in campus life so we don't all get bored and feel like we live on the most boring campus ever. Some examples of our clubs are the Interfaith Choir, Gospel Choir, Men's Chorale, Math and Computer Science Club, Poetry Club, and the Student Government Association. Some activities that we are used to having every year are Homecoming Week, the newly included Unity Through Diversity Week, Courageous Conversations which is also new, Brave-Fest, Purple and Gold week, as well as many other unique and exciting activities that go on as students and staff come up with ideas.

    Greek Life

We have eight of the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities of the Pan-Hellenic Counsel on our campus. We also have numerous community service and academic Greek organizations on our campus that students may join.

    Campus Safety

Not many bad things happen on campus, but we do have campus police and security in case any dangerous incidents do occur. They aren't the best at actually responding to the things that go on, but we have a very small force so I assume that they do as much as they can.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are so big as to where your a number, the classes are smaller in size especially your major classes, where as your teacher will know you on a first and last name basis.

    Dorm Life

The New Dorms in my opinion are the best dorms out there. Yes they are a tad bit more expensive then the renovated dorms but I think it is well worth the extra money.

    Food and Dining

The cafe food is okay, sometimes it is a repeat but there are times where they try different things. And the flex dollars are the best part of the meal plan.Where you can spend them in Starbucks, Pizza Hut or SubConnection.

    In three sentences

it wasn't what i expected at all. teachers that motivate the students are few and far between, and the coursework is mundane and repetitive. the morale of the school as a whole is very low.

    Tips for prospective students

if you've always lived in a rural area and are focused solely on school work, then i say this may be the place for you. if you're coming from a big city like i was, you may experience culture shock seeing as though the closest walmart is almost forty-five minutes away. the campus is a ghost town on weekends so if you have a car, i suggest you make haste because the dining hall serves brunch both saturday and sunday during lunch hours and at dinner. another thing that i didn't understand is that the dining hall will sometimes run out of food on weekends, but they insist on bringing young children there as a field trip and feed them knowing there's barely enough food for us. one last thing is the construction and rebuilding the dorm facilities. at least three times during the first semester the water was shut off for hours at a time in my building (the honors dorm), the dining hall, and many other dorms.

    Academic Rigor

my english professor was the best teacher i had while i was there. he was efficient, gave decent assignments, and was clear and precise in his instructions. the work wasn't hard at all but it was his desire for teaching that made the difference. one of my other teachers lectured us about what was going on at the various award shows and the happenings on tv more often than not. when we did actually learn in his class, our notes never seemed to correspond with anything on the test. after we brought this to his attention he altered his approach but we were nearing our final exam.

    Dorm Life

the dorm life was the best thing there. i liked my roommate and we got along most of the time. our room was very spacious and we shared a bathroom with the girls next door. though the resident directors were fairly nice to me and everyone else, they stayed to themselves downstairs and if you didn't need anything you'd never see them. my dorm had two floors and a back door. it was addressed in a meeting that no one should use the back doors, but they never actually checked. girls had grown men coming in and out of our building and well into daylight hours like they lived there. some of them were regulars, going to class and coming back without a doubt in their mind that they would not get caught and to be honest, they wouldn't.

    Food and Dining

i will say that the eatery in the student union building was nice. there's a pizza hut/ wing street and a sub connection resembling subway. i never tried the sub connection but the pizza hut was always appetizing, everything but the prices. the students are getting ripped-off and they know it. the personal pan pizzas are literally the size of my hand with my fingers out-stretched (i have a small hand). this item costs $5.99 before tax all by itself! the meal with tax is somewhere around $8.50, including a drink and bread sticks. the bread sticks are delicious and reasonably priced. their hot wings aren't bad either. food in the dining hall or cafe as we called it is mediocre. there's a burger and fry line, a salad bar, a hot meal line, a cold cut sandwich line, and a pizza line. if they underestimate the number of students eating lunch/ dinner that day, then two of the lines may be shut down causing ridiculously long lines and you may be late for your next class.

    What to do for fun

fun is not a word i would use to describe this campus. every single, solitary party is held at the campus night club called illusions. there is no air, and if there is you will most likely pass out before you get wind of it because it's such a small space over-capacity with students. any other parties are held at the another club about twenty minutes away called sensations. without a ride, you most likely won't be attending. flyers for parties in jackson float around campus but that's an hour and thirty minutes away. again, without a ride there isn't much to do. if you come here i suggest you make a lot of friends or make your own fun by picking up a hobby.

Great for these types of students

students who don't mind a laid-back, rural setting.

    Clubs and Activities

there are a number of activities hosted at the student union building, but the space is very limited. there is also a block party to raise money for the various organizations. this was the highlight of my time here.

    Campus Safety

i was most alarmed by the fact that security was so lax. anyone can come on campus! the security guards at the front gate wave every car in without so much as taking down the tag number or asking for identification. 24-7 people come in and out as they please through the front gate because there is no curfew. there's a back gate as well and i've never seen anyone there. after a certain time the back gates are closed. police officers are seen riding around handing out tickets left and right throughout the day, i will say that.

Some classes are challenging some classes are not. Many students have to go graduate school before being offered job opportunities.

    Am enjoying being here

There is not much to do because the school is not near any close cities. It is about 45 minutes from a walmart or a movies, or mall. But it is a very friendly environment and the people you meet there are all nice and caring.

    Bang for the buck

I think tuition is a bit over priced for what the students recieve but the new dorms are amazing and the cafe food is really good on most days.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your finincial aid applications and scholarship applications early. It is a hastle to get people in financial aid to help and you will get the run around very frequently.

Great for these types of students

Students with ACT scores 26 and above- full scholarship
Students who have low test scores around 18 can get in
Students who are used to rural environments and are not from urban areas.
