the community college, college of lake county, is a good place for those who seek knowledge, want to save money, who don't know what they want to do yet, who aren't ready to go into a university yet or all of these things, i've seen them all! i was personally able to begin learning percussion at the college of lake county and it became my passion, now i am a music education major. college of lake county is great place for the confusing times for those in their late-teen years during the rough economic times, i'm very happy i went.

    Tips for prospective students

if i were to give a tip about students going to college of lake county, don't worry about what other people say about you going to a community college. do your own thing, save some money and make your own life, no one is or can decide it for you and every person in life goes at their own pace. that being said, give it your all and prepare hard for your future degrees where ever it may take you.

    Academic Rigor

it is college material, but the pacing is a lot slower and kind of easier. the true nature of community college is the connections you make and the work you put into it, like anything in life but much more true here. and while not being a real full-time student, one can get part-time job or enjoy life a little without the constant stress.

    Dorm Life

there are no dorms in college of lake county, but if you like living at home it is terrific.

    Food and Dining

though college of lake county is a cheap place to get your general education credits done cheaply, i'm pretty sure college of lake county makes most of its' money off desperate kids with it's cafeteria and vending machines. luckily, there are plenty places around the campus that are much cheaper (and better tasting) than the cafeteria and the vending machines.

    What to do for fun

whatever you want, you're not limited to the campus or anything. college of lake county holds loads of concerts and activities so people can mingle and meet each other. i personally just hung out with friends or played music though.

    Bang for the buck

paying a fraction of what a university charges for general education classes, that are either the same or better in quality, is obviously a great bargain.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there are no unusual traditions or locations on campus, but i've personally found the hideous, asymmetric grayslake campus to be very charming after awhile.

Great for these types of students

the college of lake county is a great school for slackers, non-traditional students, students who couldn't afford all four years of college or the guy who is just clueless. some people after going to college of lake county realize that school isn't for them and that's totally okay too as long you are happy.

don't be discouraged though because these may sound like the losers to you but the people you meet are probably just in the same spot as yourself. also most of teachers are awesome and brilliant which is of course, great.

    Clubs and Activities

there are clubs for everything, this is because everyone is trying to make their resumes awesome for their college of choice. i never joined one myself, as i was always practicing or playing in bands, but i know they are ran by committed and smart people. and there's at least one or two school run activities every month, so there's not really ever a dry spell of having nothing to do.

    Greek Life

there is no greek life as far as i'm aware as it is just a community college.

    Campus Safety

i've never seen anything illegal on campus in my four years at the school and the security guards are the nicest and oddly most enlightened people i have ever met.

    Am learning a lot

Small class sizes make one on one time with instructors easy. One of the best community colleges you can attend in Illinois.

    Am enjoying being here

Although it's a good school, you're still missing out on the University experience that can't be replicated at a commuter school.

    Bang for the buck

You're paying almost nothing for an education that you would cost you 20 times as much elsewhere.

    Am learning a lot

Since the classes are small you are in a cozier environment and you have much more one on one time with the teacher. The curriculum is complex and yet easy to work with and you achieve a much higher educational experience then you think you would get.

    Am enjoying being here

The students are a variety at College of Lake County and you end up making a massive amount of friends and study buddies. There are sections throughout the school where you can relax and study at the same time. The staff are very friendly and willing to help. The school itself is very welcoming and creates a relaxing atmosphere so you can gain the education you need.

    Bang for the buck

Each credit only being about one hundred dollars, it is a lot cheaper then other schools. Of course if you are full time some people such as myself need a massive amount of help for the pricing. But it is a lot cheaper then other schools in Illinois and it is definitely worth the price.

Great for these types of students

If you don't know what major you would like to pursue and are just looking to get your general classes out of the way then College of Lake County is the place to be. Then again, if you know what career you would like to pursue then this is also the place for you. It is a fun educational environment.

They have small classes so great one to one interaction with teachers.
    Everyone is extremely helpful there.
The only thing is that because it is a community college there is no unity with the students there like in a four year college.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not stress yourself out everyone at the school is helpful so do not hesitate to go ask for help.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers I chose where on point with the subjects and they never slacked off.

    Food and Dining

They have great food but I never really bought anything there.

    What to do for fun

You can join clubs especially the Paranormal club!

Overall, College of Lake County is the best choice for Northern Illinois community college experience. Not only is the staff helpful, the classes are small and more intimate. The academics are up to par with a normal college or university.

    Tips for prospective students

Choose classes carefully, and don't take more classes than you can handle. Having a full time school schedule is a lot harder than it seems. On average you will have 3 times the amount of credit hours worth of work. So if a class is worth 4 credit hours, you will have 12 hours worth of work at the least. Also, if you need help ASK! There are many tutoring opportunities for students to aid them in the process.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at College of Lake County are up to par with a 4 year university. The instructors are down to business and really know what they are doing. They are also helpful and some even go so far as to give you their personal phone number to use if you have any questions.

    Dorm Life

College of Lake County does not have dorms as it is a 2 year university.

    Food and Dining

The food is moderate, however it is a bit pricey for what you get.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of school sponsored activities however most students prefer hanging out with their friends outside of class.

The College of Lake County is a great college institution for those interested in continuing their education. CLC provides students with valuable, but affordable, courses with room to prosper in higher level courses as well. In addition, students are given opportunity to broaden their horizons through available social activities found on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

The College of Lake County gets a bed representation from many high school students. Basically, high school students, because as high school students we aren’t made completely aware of the tremendous amount of opportunities offered, but rather a community college is seen as a college for those who are failing in life. This is certainly untrue. Students from all over Lake County attend CLC due to its affordability, valuable classes, and social activities. Also, there numerous other resources offered at CLC. Closer relationships among teachers and students at this college are possible; this is not always the case at four – year universities. My advice to prospective students is that all should consider community college, especially if the student needs to finish general courses. General courses (perquisites in order to pursue ones major) are basically the same at any college. Why pay more for the same general courses you could be taking at a community college like CLC? Once you hit college, you’ll realize how necessary it is to be smart and save (college debt sucks!). Also, for prospective students, do your research. Most professors at CLC are great; because these professors understand why students have chosen community college, but one should still research who are credible professors, perhaps check out ratemyprofessor.com. Furthermore, when taking courses at a community college with intent to transfer, it is important to find out what future college you’re interested in attending so that you can take the classes needed accordingly. Don’t be afraid to do your research and meet with college counselors. Lastly, become active and be aware of valuable events going on at the campus (networking is key!).

    Academic Rigor

As the College of Lake County is a two-year community college, one can expect not to take 300, 400 level courses (junior, senior level courses). Most classes, from my experience, are not too difficult if one stays on tops of their homework, asks questions, works hard, and makes adjustments when necessary. This is not high school, college WILL require more work out of you. Take it as a challenge. Hard work is only temporary. Be prepared to write many papers. Don't worry, with time and effort, you WILL be a better writer. CLC offers a variety of academic assistance from their writing and math center to their peer mentoring programs to their various workshops intended to help students with their academic struggles. For those looking to further challenge themselves, honors courses are available to students who have a certain G.P.A (Grade Point Average is so important!). If you are able to take honors courses and maintain above a B, you're course fee is refunded.

    Food and Dining

CLC offers O.K food. As a college student, you learn to make your own lunches in order to save money! I'd rather spend my money on spending time with friends.

    What to do for fun

CLC offers a variety of social events throughout the semester, more for day than night time students. There are also a variety of clubs one can get involved in from Anime Club, to International Club, to Psychology Club. For those interested in self-improvement, workshops, conferences, and fairs are also found on campus. I recommend getting INVOLVED. Just going to class and leaving campus can get quite boring. By getting involved, students are able to meet new people, network, and progress. Based off personal experience, I have become a rounder person through school involvement. I have also been offered work, volunteer, and internship opportunities not completely available to students who JUST attend class.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Behind the art gallery is a quiet area space with a nice scene, many students forget about this spot, but when you need to get work done, this place is perfect.

Great for these types of students

Great for any type of student. For those looking to save money and can't quite afford a four-year college just yet, this is the school for you. Again, just make sure you take the correct classes for the future school you're interested in. Students who transfer to four-year universities are more able to get financial assistance when they can can show they did well academically and socially at their community college. Private schools are especially kind to you if you do well academically and are a transfer student.

    Clubs and Activities

The College of Lake County has a variety of club. Check out student activities for a full list of clubs. Choose clubs that fit your interest and don't be afraid to meet new people. P.S. Check out the Psychology Club!

    Greek Life

As far as I know, there is no greek life. BUT, Phi Theta Kappa, a academic organization is offered at the College of Lake County for students with above a certain G.P.A By joining, students are given financial opportunities not available to non-members.

college of lake county is a great way to transition from high school to a university while saving money and meeting new people. it's very diverse and a lot different from high school, where i practically grew up with everyone i went to school with. although some people may have negative things to say about community college, i truly think that clc has so much to offer and is a great way to learn more about yourself, while giving yourself the opportunity to discover what subjects you may want to study.

    Tips for prospective students

i highly encourage every student to get involved in one way or another. clubs, activities, sports, or even working on campus are great ways to meet new people and find something you're interested in. there are tons of clubs and activities going on every single day, and by getting into it, you will enjoy your experience at clc twice as much.

    Academic Rigor

the reason i put four stars is because the classes and material can be very challenging - just because this is community college doesn't mean the classes are easy! - but it's what you make of it. if you take your homework and your classes seriously, you will do great! i don't recommend ditching classes, because a lot of the information you learn will be through class lectures, and attending class will definitely help you be successful.

    Dorm Life

unfortunately, there is no on campus housing for clc. it is a community college.

    Food and Dining

there is a cafeteria at clc as well as a small cafe called something's brewing. my recommendation is to bring a packed lunch with you! only you know what is healthy for your body and what will help you focus in class. there are a limited amount of healthy choices as far as dining goes at clc.

    What to do for fun

there are several clubs, sports, and activities to be involved in. check out what clc has to offer and i am positive you will find something you're interested in!

    Bang for the buck

it is definitely affordable if you live in lake county. it's a great way to save some money on general education classes, as well as any classes you want to take in order to explore your options.

Great for these types of students

wonderful for students of all kinds!

    Clubs and Activities

over 50 clubs at clc! there is something for everyone. there are also great sports teams.

    Campus Safety

there is security all around campus. sometimes, there are emails about students being abducted or something dangerous, but if you are walking to your car with a friend and are avoiding strangers, you should be okay. security is always available to help you walk to your car.

the college of lake county is a great experience for any prospective students. the classes are intense and the there are a bunch of different activities, clubs and organizations on campus. it's a great place to start your education and you won't be disappointed; just make sure you don't slack off in class and get involved and you'll enjoy your time at the college of lake county.

    Tips for prospective students

don't procrastinate!, do your homework, show up to class, get involved in the different clubs and organizations, use the resources that are there for you (the student empowerment center, the writing and math center, office with students with disabilities, health center, etc.) and enjoy your experience here.

    Academic Rigor

don't be mistaken that just because the college is a two institution that the classes you take won't be difficult and require studying and doing homework. the courses are just as difficult and intense as a four year school which is useful because when you actually get to a four year school you won't be surprised or get behind. i've taken a lot of heavy science courses because of my major and they were not easy and required hours of studying and doing homework. i've also taken general courses as well and depending on what teacher you get the class could be easier or harder. overall though, the college of lake county is a great institution to come to for a bettering your education.

    Dorm Life

    there are no dorms.

    Food and Dining

the food is pretty good. they have a variety of different foods available and have two different cafeterias that aren't over priced. if your on the grayslake campus go to the university center has the best food and it's all at a reasonable price. i haven't gone to the lake shore or south lake campuses so if you go there i hope they have good food as well.

    What to do for fun

(grayslake campus) they have over 50 different clubs and organizations that you can get involved with and we have sports offered as well. the gym is free to students and we even have a lair that has tv, computers, pool tables and video games. the main lobby has comfy chairs for students to hang out and the library has over two computer labs for student use.

    Bang for the buck

the college of lake county is definitely worth looking into. the classes are very affordable and if you don't know what you want to do as a major you won't be wasting your money and if you do know what you want to do it's a great way to save money by taking care of prerequisites for different majors. also, if you're just wanting to live closer to home that is another advantage of going to the college of lake county.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there are three campuses one in grayslake (main campus), south lake and lake shore. grayslake has a beautiful campus with a lake in its backyard and a running/walking trail around the boarder of the school. they have a very green campus with lots of trees and flowers.

Great for these types of students

    Greek Life

we have a phi theta kappa which is the honors society on campus. that's abou it though.

    Campus Safety

Professors at CLC have classes that are intended for students to learn. If you, the student, is willing to do the homework, listen and record the lectures, and participate, you will gain tons of knowledge that can be applied into your future career. Do not listen to people when they say the College of Lake County is an easy school. No education is easy, and those individuals couldn't be farther from the truth.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at the College of Lake County. There are numerous study spaces and resources all set aside for student use. There's a variety of clubs and organizations that students can get involved with and volunteer in. The classes are enjoyable and there's a bunch of different events that happen during the semester, including job and college fairs, bake sales, and educational events.

    Bang for the buck

Considering what you pay for on a big university campus and the little one-on-one teacher interaction you'll receive, CLC is the best price wise. On a university campus, such as Illinois State or Southern Illinois, you'll be in a large auditorium with hundreds of students and your presence will go unnoticed. If you're having issues grasping a concept in class, it will be a struggle a meet with the teacher at an appropriate time and get help. At the College of Lake County, class sizes are very small, with approximately 20 students per class, and professors take the 16 week semester to get to know everyone. They have consistent office hours when they can help students and answer questions.

    Tips for prospective students

While high schools and other students may bash the College of Lake County at times, calling it an easy school or the college of last chance, do not attend the College based on this information. The College of Lake County expects students to work hard and put forth the effort needed for each class. They have the same standards a good university would have.

Great for these types of students

Students who take care of family or have children themselves will love the College of Lake County's flexible class scheduling and reasonable driving distance. Students looking to save thousands of dollars from going to a university will love the College of Lake County's affordable price. Students who wish to stay in Lake County, whether for job reasons or out of choice, will love the connections the College of Lake County makes with businesses, retailers, and individuals in Lake County. Students who are undecided about a major upon graduating high school, or who feel intimidated by a university's large, overbearing feel, will also love the College of Lake County.
