    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot in the classes I have taken so far. I really learned a lot in my computer class and have enjoyed my teachers thus far. After taking sociology class, I decided to take more sociology in the future possibly making it a minor.

As of now, I commute to school but have hopes of staying on campus next year. I have met people and become involved in intramurals and other on campus activities that have helped me feel a part of the school.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't hesitate to seek out advise from fellow upper class students and especially an academic advisor to help w/ your class selection towards what you are interested in majoring in. Also, know how many hours maximum you can take per semester and use them wisely in order to get your degree in 4 years.

All the teachers I've had so far really take the time to help you out. Granted, you have to show you want help before you receive it. The teachers I've had make it fun and easy to learn whatever subject it is that they're teaching. I haven't had a single teacher that I haven't liked.

ETSU always has something going on! Our calender is loaded with events! There's something to do almost every single day. There's tons of restaurants and places to shop within ten minutes from campus. And the people are just great to be around!

    Bang for the buck

Compared to a LOT of colleges I was looking at, ETSU was definitely the cheapest. And I feel that I'm getting a wonderful education.

    Tips for prospective students

    Some tips for students:
Definitely take a tour of the campus. Try to get a feel for it before you decide that's where you want to live for the next 1 - 4 years.
Ask questions! There's never a stupid question; and people are always eager to help you out!

Great for these types of students

ETSU is a great campus for anybody. It's a good size. It's close to EVERYTHING! Everyone there is so friendly and helpful.
It really doesn't take long to get into the groove of ETSU. It'll feel like home in no time.

Teachers are really great and not only do they teach from the book but also include personal knowledge into textual learning. Most teachers are interesting and helpful with any extra assistance needed

    Am enjoying being here

Well there is a place for everyone, if you enjoy the small local community town feel with a touch of southern hospitality then this is the place for you. Their different school clubs to join and many different campus ministries.

    Bang for the buck

Paying out of state tuition is pretty high and increasing but for the price is decent for the local students compared to other state schools. Different types of scholarship are available so apply early.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the school before making a final decision. Look at your major and see if it fits well with the school curriculum. School has a good nursing school and blue grass program. Yeah Kenny Chesney attend this school and was part of the blue grass program.

Great for these types of students

If your an outdoor person who likes hiking, biking, kayaking in the summer time. While skiing, snowboarding, and tobogganing in the winter time. You will definitively enjoy this place

I love my teachers. I have learned a lot from the teachers and the students. The teachers are very helpful and willing to work with you.

    Am enjoying being here

I am glad that i moved from UTC to ETSU this year. I am so happy about being here and about making the friends i have at this school. I will never forget the people or the school.

    Bang for the buck

I think that i am paying the money for the teachers to teach and mine are doing a good job at teaching. They are making sure that i understand everything and they are working with me to understand and be able to pass.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure that you get your paper work on time and try to get it in way before the due date. Don't pick the first college you look at. Make sure that you are going to love the place and not hate being there for so long. You need to look at more than one school so you will know what you can pick from. Look at things that are around the school and things will be able to do around the area.

east tennessee state is a superb university nestled in the uniquely historic and loving community that fills johnson city. the university has a wide variety of degree programs to provide its services to a diverse student body. life as a student at etsu is both fulfilling and satisfying, and attending this university has allowed many students to take their first steps toward life-long career goals.

    Academic Rigor

the academic standards allow for a knowledge-filled experience without causing an enormous amount of stress. however, students will need to keep up with deadlines and schedules provided by the school and their professors to prevent procrastination and a build-up of work that may create a slightly stressful experience.

    Dorm Life

dorm life at etsu allows for students who wish to isolate themselves to do so at their will, but the dorms also provide opportunities to meet a lot of new people and make plenty of new friends and study groups.

    Food and Dining

the meal-plans at etsu, if living on campus, only allow the use of one meal per a pre-allotted time frame for each of three meals a day. this causes problems for students whose dining habits do not directly correspond with each meals time frame. however, the food selections and opportunities across and around campus make up for the poor time allotment.

average school with beautiful view. campus life is dismal at best. there are several things to do during the day but the city quiets down at night.

    Tips for prospective students

consider how much partying you want to do. another school may be a better choice. if you do not like the cold, stay far away.

    Academic Rigor

prerequisites are easy however, the sciences are extremely difficult here.

    Dorm Life

not much to do. too strict while living in a dorm. only plus is convenience.

    Food and Dining

the main cafeteria is awful but there are several places on campus with good food like chik-fil-a.

    What to do for fun

    the mall and some bars.

    Bang for the buck

good not great, i could have done better.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

one of the dorm houses is apparently haunted.

Great for these types of students

quiet students who do not mind not having a nightlife.

    Clubs and Activities

several clubs affiliated with the school and intramurals are really big here.

    Greek Life

the frats are pretty big here but there are only a few along with the sororities.

    Campus Safety

you will get hit by a car on this campus as i have and then the hospital that they take you to up here is worse than useless, they almost killed me. if you are accident prone, the hospitals will not help your case.

As a theatre major, I can definitely say that it helps to have teachers that still work in their respective fields. This is important because what you study may become obsolete in four years time, so you need to keep up with what is current in your field to not only remain employable, but sane.

Unlike other schools where teachers just hammer in material that was taught to them, the teachers at East Tennessee State University are still working outside the realm of education.

Dr. Delbert Hall teaches rigging and he still designs and hangs fly systems for regional theatres. The Director of the theatre program at ETSU, Patrick Cronin, teaches acting for the camera and offers advice to students seeking careers in film and theatre. Some of his work involves: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mad About You, Sabrina: The Teenage Witch... look him up. Melissa Shafer and Karen Brewster still do costuming and scene and set for professional opera and the Barter Theatre.

These teachers know what the industry was like years ago and they know what it is like currently. They will be able to prepare you for the real world.

    Am enjoying being here

This may be biased because my world is theatre, but there is a lot going on in the area and not just on campus. There are groups and student-run organizations that put on productions and reach out to members of the community to get involved. It is common to find a mixed group in a production: some people that don't attend ETSU, some students, some actors... varying ages sometimes 18 to 62.

This applies to everyone interested in attending ETSU, not just theatre majors:
The involvement is great! But that is just it, you need to be involved. Don't come in your freshman year and expect to sit quietly in the corner and learn something. Learn by doing!

    Bang for the buck

I reiterate: I can definitely say that it helps to have teachers that still work in their respective fields. This is important because what you study may become obsolete in four years time, so you need to keep up with what is current in your field to not only remain employable, but sane.

Definitely a deal. I'd have to pay a lot more if I were attending elsewhere to gain access to these tools and to people who have experienced what it is like to work in the field I am interested in.

    Tips for prospective students

MILK IT FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH!!! You might pay thousands more to receive access to the tools and people who have experienced things in your field elsewhere. The people are knowledgeable, so you need to ask questions and get involved!

You need to get involved... literally the first day, you need to hit the ground running. Don't come in and expect to sit quietly in the corner and learn something. Many students come in and sit quietly and say nothing their first day... The experience may be jarring, but you need to go for it. Learn by doing!

Great for these types of students

Students who understand that they need to not only take what is given to them, but work and research outside of class to broaden their prospects. You don't come here to sit quietly for four years and get a piece of paper. Get involved.

I'm a biology major, and I currently have so many general education requirements that I haven't been able to take strictly biology related classes. I have a feeling the first year or two will simply be an in-depth review of what I learned at high school.

    Am enjoying being here

Although ETSU is too close for comfort to the middle of the city for me (I'm a steep mountains and flowing rivers gal!), I enjoy walking through campus and hearing the clock tower chime ever hour or so. It's a charming place.

    Bang for the buck

ETSU has the cheapest tuition of all the schools I researched, and the level of education you receive definitely exceeds the cost.

    Will learn a lot

I am in a program that allows me to stay on campus during the summer and I have a BLAST! I learn new things all of the time. I learn shortcuts that will allow you to get to class sooner and quicker.

    Will enjoy being here

I love being on campus. Everything is near you if you need anything.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition price is good. Also the doom rooms are amazing. My favorite to stay in is Centennial Hall. I liked Lucy and West if you want to stay in a historic dormitory.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice is when you have to go some where try to get there early. Also if you love to give others advice, apply to be a RA in the Upward Bound program.

Great for these types of students

Great for anyone whether you are from a big city of a small town, you can easily make friends and have fun.

Many of the general classes are large and every student is known as a seat row and number. Once you move out of these general classes though the one on one instruction is better. I feel that I have learned a good bit but not as much as I did in the community college setting.

    Am enjoying being here

There are many groups to join and there are always things going on. If you are into sword fighting then you can find that, if you are into underwater basket weaving then you can find that too. If you like watching movies with lots of people or if you want to go to the gym and work out. There is never a time that you should be bored.

    Bang for the buck

I attended a community college for 2 years and that is what I will compare my education at ETSU to. I am at ETSU for the biomedical engineering program. The quality of instruction at ETSU is varying. Some instructors are very concerned about your learning and others dont care at all. I would say that the education value is a little lacking based on the price of attending. Classes that I found to be very productive were calculus, and trigonometry, anatomy and physiology. Classes that were lacking in instructional value were some of the more biomed/electronics specific. The instructors were older overweight men that only cared about their projects and the paycheck.

    Tips for prospective students

This is a very good school. Don’t park your car backwards you will get a ticket. What I would suggest is if you are looking for a bachelors in Biomedical engineering or electronics it would be worth your time looking elsewhere. As for other programs I cannot say. I know people who have been in the art/film department who have been more than pleased. The same goes with math. From what I can tell the school is not a party school so you should be able to study just fine. The library is wonderful and the computer labs are equipped with all the software that you need.

Great for these types of students

ETSU has almost every possible major so just pick the one that fits you and go for it. I think that every type of student has a place at the university.

Is a great college for anyone of any age. All professors are very understanding to the busy ways of life, and are very willing to help you in any way you feel you need help. But not only do the professors help you many of the students are willing to help you. Anything that you what to learn, even if its not a class, you can pretty much find someone to teach it to you. And if it does not offer what you want, it is very easy to begin your own club.

    Am enjoying being here

There are many activities that one can find on campus. There is also almost any club you can think of here. Again if not than they offer to where you can create your own. You can create how busy you want to be or how laid back your day is. You can play a pick up game in the gym or just read a book under a shade tree.

    Bang for the buck

Is one of the best colleges I have ever been to. Wonderful faculty and staff, beautiful landscape, and much more! If one is to come to ETSU, it will definitely be a time that one will enjoy.

    Tips for prospective students

Look for activities to get involved with! This college has a lot of activities that appeals to your every need! Plus this helps you get to know people of every race, age, and sex. Make sure to relax and enjoy your time at college. Study and study hard but also take time to smell the roses as people say! It is very overwhelming starting college, especially if its your first time away from parents, family, and friends, but I promise everyone will help you get through it here. Everyone understands the struggles that a college student faces and they make sure to work around them and get through them!

Great for these types of students

Great college for any student of any age, race, or sex. Has a great variety of people and a great culture mix.

    Am learning a lot

When you first get here,it's a little overwhelming if you aren't from around the area.Classes are tough to find the first day, but when is it ever easy? After a week on campus things roll quite smoothly, and by now you have several friends and things to do. There are tons of things to do on and off campus..its just a matter of getting out of your dorm or house and doing it! Class is not too crazy, the biggest lecture hall i have been in was around 150 people, which is not that much considering most colleges cram you in a room double or triple that size. The classes sizes make it easy to have one on one time during class,or to ask questions.

    Am enjoying being here

One of the main reasons i decided on this school,is that it is literally one of the most beautiful campuses I've seen...if you like trees and grass. I'm just not a concrete person.

    Bang for the buck

Definitely the best school to be at if you come from a middle class family. Nearly everyone here gets some financial of some kind, although the financial aide process is tiresome and sometimes frustrating, double checking your information and the forms you submit will make the process much smoother. And for god sakes, check and make all your deadlines for financial aid and scholarships,or you will regret it!

    Tips for prospective students

Bring athletic gear. This campus loves to be active so a couple pairs of shorts, tennis shoes, and maybe some cleats will be beneficial.Bring a car or some for of transportation. The campus is kind of secluded,in that all the restaurants, malls, and other stores are located off campus, which makes it hard if you REALLY want a white chocolate molten cake from chili's. Lastly bring yourself. This school is great, and the people here are great as well.

Great for these types of students

If you like sports, great place for you.If nature is your thing, great place for you.If you like to party, great place for you! (Yes,we party, but its not thrown in your face like most colleges) If you are chill like me,this place is laid back without a question. If you wanna meet new people, awesome place for you. Everyone is happy for the most part, and you are sure to find your niche. Greek life is very active here,so if Goin Greek is your thing, then it is highly recommended that you check it out. To close, believe me when i tell you, you will love this school!
