    Am learning a lot

Emerson is teaching me a great deal about the arts that I was never able to learn in my basic college-prep high school program. As a Writing, Literature, and Publishing major, I'm learning a lot about how real world events influence the creation of films, theatre, and books.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love attending Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. We are located right in the heart of the city in the theatre district, so there is so much to see and do within walking distance. When I first moved in to college, my new friends and I spent a lot of time adventuring around the city discovering all the amazing sites and dining the city has to offer. The Emerson population is also a very diverse, accepting one, so no matter what, you'll feel welcomed by our friendly students.

    Bang for the buck

I absolutely feel like I'm getting my money's worth in my education at Emerson College. Emerson has also been working very hard in spite of the recession to keep annual costs from increasing too much, and through budget cuts and distribution of financial aid, they have succeeded in minimizing tuition increase.

    Tips for prospective students

You must be involved outside the classroom at Emerson College to get the most out of your education. While you learn a lot in class, you gain as much if not more experience and knowledge for your field while involved in extracurricular activities in which you can apply your talents and skills. For example, I am a copy editor for the school paper, the Berkeley Beacon and will hopefully be involved more this year with the Publishing Club and a literary magazine.

Great for these types of students

Artists (Filmmakers, Actors, Writers), Creators, Ambitious Dreamers, those who want to make a difference through creation and expression.

Emerson College is filled with motivated and talented young individuals who strive for success. I never expected to learn as much as I did my first semester at college. As a broadcast journalism major, I have had the opportunity to get involved in my schools broadcasting organizations. These award-winning student run organizations include EIV news and The Emerson Channel. Both of these organizations have taught me how to work with cameras and gave me a better learning on how to report news.

    Am enjoying being here

College is going to be fun, no matter where you go. You're free for the first time. The advantage that Emerson College has over many other colleges is that it is right in the heart of Boston. There is always something to do. Although Emerson College is not a huge party school, there is Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern University and many others right around the area. Newbury St. is right around the corner; there is a movie theater right next to us; and there are lots of concerts!

    Bang for the buck

Emerson College is extremely expensive, as you already might know. However, it's worth it. The opportunities that you get from this school can't compare to anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips: 1) Don't let reviews make your decision. You will read bad reviews, and you will read good reviews. Focus on what is more important for your future. 2) If you're unsure about Emerson College because of the party-scene, don't let that you hold you back. Your education is far more important and trust me, you will have fun if you know the right places to go. 3) You have probably read that Emerson College has a lot of gay people. It does. However, there are plenty of other guys and gals!

Great for these types of students

If you're future ambitions include broadcasting, acting, writing, etc. Emerson College is the place to be. It will put your foot in the right door.

The best thing about this school is the fact that you can jump right in and get involved right as a freshman. People don't really care how little experience you have, and everyone is very willing to help you learn. There is a surplus of clubs and extra-curriculars which all help you learn so much about everything you want and need to know. Most of the professors here either worked in the field they are teaching about, or are still currently working - so it is definitely very nice knowing that you are being educated by a successful individual in your industry. Some of the gen eds offered by this school are unlike any other with courses focusing on a range of things such as love&eroticism, burlesque, monsters in movies, etc. Sometimes, even when you feel like you're not learning very much, you look back and realize you got so much more out of a course than expected.

    Am enjoying being here

Honestly, I thought I would hate it here before I came - I was already planning out my transfer. After reading reviews, I saw that people always said it's full of only freaks, weirdos, hipsters, and homosexuals...or that no one that was actually cool in high school goes there. I mean, there are definitely a noticeable number of freaks, weirdos, hipsters, and homosexuals...but there are a lot more normal and cool people than expected, also. I am an athlete here, so I'm definitely in the minority, and it's often said that Emerson is not an athletic school. But, when you are an athlete, you end up hanging out with all of the other athletes and get really close. The athletes here are all really dedicated to what they do, and the teams are actually very good - usually making it to the finals if not winning them. If you're not an athlete, and totally not into athletics, don't worry at all...you'll find plenty of people with the same mind-set. There's literally a place for everyone at this school, as cliche as it sounds. Also, it's the perfect size for me...I was never looking for something too big, and I like seeing a lot of familiar faces. Everyone here is connected to each other in some way or another, but it's kind of cool in that way. Besides that, being in the city of Boston is incredibly and there is always something to do.

    Bang for the buck

It's important to remember that Emerson College is not a cheap school to attend, but if you can afford it or are willing to take out the loans to do so, definitely look into it. The best part of this school is its location - literally in the middle of Boston. If all the organizations and extracurriculars don't give you the connections and experience you need, and even if your professors can't guide you, then you are still in the middle of an amazing city that has so many opportunities. The big people in business who you would want to know about Emerson College definitely do, and a lot of prominent figures went to school here so just the name does help. The school is getting bigger and bigger as time goes on, and the name is also really expanding. Just like every school, there are definitely some things that the school takes advantage of the students with such as prices for laundry. The meal plan with board bucks and ECcash is a little annoying too, but it's manageable. The facilities here are great (except the gym is a little lacking, but hey..) and there are always small ways to get a little more bang for your buck.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you get involved with at least one or two extracurriculars. You not only meet a lot of people, but that is how you start networking and making connections. Make sure that you are definitely sure you want to pursue a degree in communications or the arts before coming here though, since we literally don't offer degrees in math or science - or if we do, no one is really aware of that. Don't get scared by the reputation that some review sites have given the school...trust me, I was so manipulated by those reviews that I was terrified before coming here. People who write on those sites usually did not give it a chance, or had some serious issues with the school that not most people share with them.

Great for these types of students

Everyone interested in communications or the arts...or both.
The type of student is changing as years go on, apparently. The newest freshman class is said to be the most straight and most normal that they have ever had. Again though, don't be worried...there are so many different types of people. Beyond that, it's nice to be surrounded by such intelligent and talented people...so if you're looking for that, go to Emerson!

My college classes are far less rigorous than my high school classes. I feel that those majoring in the arts have more on their plate in terms of workload than those majoring in Communications.

Second-hand smoke is no joke. If you're a smoker, you'll adapt quickly. If you're not, you'll have to get used to it. The fun is not on-campus, but off-campus. The city is pretty great, but the campus is okay.

    Bang for the buck

I didn't count on spending nearly $45,000/yr to have my Intro to College Writing teacher be a graduate student. If I'm paying that much money, I should at least have a real teacher showing me how to write like a college student. For a college that claims to be liberal arts, it does not provide a real liberal arts education. A liberal arts' education is one that is well-rounded. That is not at all what Emerson provides.

    Tips for prospective students

Be smart about your choice for college. Know what is important to you, and look for that in a school.
Emerson College is not a place for those who want to find themselves. Emerson College is a place for those who know who they are, and what they want to do with their lives.

Great for these types of students

This school is not well-balanced. It is more for students into the arts, because that is where the real education is at Emerson. Also, because Emerson spends a ton of money on the arts, and tends to forget about Communication Studies.

Emerson College has professors who have been and worked in the field you're going into, ie: journalism. I am a Print Journalism major, and all my professors have been in the journalism field for a long time, so they know directly what you're going to be going into in the real world and they prepare you accordingly for it.

    Am enjoying being here

Emerson has students from all over the country, and some all over the world! People have described Emerson College students as walking around in our own worlds, which we definitely do, but everyone is walking around in the same world, ready to make changes in the world. Students are so involved in and around the campus. Also, students are so fashionable!

    Bang for the buck

Emerson is costly, but they provide many scholarships and grants to help with any financial problems.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips I would provide would be to go in expecting nothing, because anything you expect from Emerson will be exceeded when you go there. I had orientation this past fall, and current students were unbelievably welcoming, they yelled and cheered every time you went into the Little Building or any other building. They were also very helpful to answer any questions, which was great!

Great for these types of students

Anyone who is interested in Communications and the Arts, Emerson is for you. It's the only school in the country dedicated solely to the arts and communications, and the things you can do there are amazing! I've already met all kinds of students with many different goals and aspirations, and I believe Emerson will help any student accomplish anything they want to in the world.

The biggest thing I've learned since being here is that it is not your typical college experience. The people are different, there really is no campus, and it is VERY specialized. I learned that I didn't want to be a journalism student and now I'm switching to marketing. The Gen-Eds are alright, but not that much fun. It's not that I'm not learning, I think what you put into you take out of it. The only exception is that for beginning major course and gen-eds the professor can be hit or miss and I will say that both my first semester journalism teachers are what turned me away from the major.

    Am enjoying being here

I'm on the fence. I've been thinking of transferring but the academic programs and the Emerson names are what is keeping me here. It's a small campus, there are clicks, and there are VERY unique people here. It is not your typical school. If you liked sporting events and having fun with friends at parties and such during high school, I would not recommend coming here.

    Bang for the buck

It's an expensive school and while I received a substantial financial aid package, I'm not sure where my money is going. The food is mediocre and mostly unhealthy. The biggest residence hall is crumbling around us and everyone jokes that they don't know where our money is going. I think it's all going into equipment for the visual media kids and stuff like that. So basically no one else is benefiting from it.

    Tips for prospective students

Know will every fiber in your being that Emerson is for you. It's so unique and specialized that if you're on the fence about what you want to do go to a state school or somewhere cheaper until you can figure it out. If you know Emerson is for you, great. I know a lot of people having a blast.

Great for these types of students

If you're really into writing, film, and communication in general. Really focused and able to survive under pressure.

I knew that I wanted to major in screenwriting before I started applying to schools, so much of my search in high school was dedicated to finding somewhere that offered a program that was right for me, and Emerson was absolutely the right choice. Unlike other schools with comparable programs, Emerson starts every student in on their respective major right away. Rather than taking irrelevant courses or general education courses for the first year or so, Emerson allows and encourages students to mix it up. I'm going to be a sophomore, and I've already taken a number of courses pertinent to my major.

The professors are one of the best components of the college. Every professor I have had thus far has been enthusiastic, engaging, and knowledgeable. Many of the professors still work in their fields, which make them invaluable resources to students going into such nebulous areas as film, advertising, journalism, etc. The professors are also extremely approachable, available, and interested in helping their students reach their maximum potential and explore every opportunity. I was interested in an internship for the summer, but I didn't know how to go about applying, and so emailed one of my professors from the first semester. That professor had forwarded my email by the next day to another professor whom I hadn't met and she felt to be more knowledgeable, and this professor met with me on several occasions to help me in my endeavor.

Additionally, the classes are all very interesting, in part because the professors all seem to have such genuine love for what they're doing. The student body is inventive, intelligent, and committed, so you learn about as much from your peers as you do from the professors and classes. I haven't met an unfriendly student at Emerson yet. And although the classes may not be the most rigorous in the universe, it's accurate to say they are what you make them. One could probably skate by with decent grades and minimal effort, but of course you get what you give--for students who are genuinely interested in pursuing their passions and not afraid to do a little extra legwork, there's no end to what you can learn and to whom you can connect. I've learned so much in just my first year of school, and I'm confident that Emerson has much, much more to offer me in the future.

To make a long story short, I don't have anything bad to say about Emerson. I'm learning a lot about my major, about the industry, and about the importance of working hard. If you're the type of student to take initiative and pursue that which you desire, there's no end to what you can learn and achieve at Emerson College.

    Am enjoying being here

Emerson College has the best location of any school, in my opinion. Boston, Massachusetts is hailed as one of the best college towns in the country, and rightly so. There are so many schools in the area that it's impossible to run out of places to go on the weekend and people to meet--there's so much diversity that it's also impossible to get bored. Emerson is right in the heart of the city, located across from the Boston Common and Public Gardens, which are both gorgeous, green areas; down the road from Chinatown, which has some awesome food and cheap groceries; a fifteen minute walk from the North End, Boston's Little Italy which houses some of the best, most authentic Italian food you'll find; up the street from Newbury Street, lined with high-end stores and great food; and literally across the street from the T station, which can take you anywhere else you want to go.

Beyond its location, Emerson's student body is wonderful. Everyone is interesting, friendly, and engaging, and there's never a shortage of events on campus. The dorms are the nicest I've seen, and the food is as good as any. My overall experience so far has been positive without fail--the only downside is that the wi-fi is a little finicky in the dorms, but word on the street is that they're looking to fix that. In sum, I'm enjoying my time at Emerson immensely.

    Bang for the buck

There's no way around it. Emerson isn't cheap. It really, really isn't cheap. The tuition and living expenses aren't necessarily a bargain, and living in Boston certainly isn't a thrifty dream, but it's definitely worth it. The college is excellent, and it affords connections that make Emerson more than worth its slightly exorbitant fee. The dorms are awesome and the food is good, so the living expenses are justified; living in Boston in general is expensive, so the college can't really be faulted for its price being a little lofty. Although the college costs more than I would ideally like, even if I could go back and do the college search all over again, I wouldn't change it for anything.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! Emerson is full of interesting, creative people, and the best place to meet them is at club meetings or film shoots. There are constantly fliers all around campus and emails are sent out, as well as the occasional facebook message, when something comes up -- don't ignore it, go! Your experience at Emerson is definitely what you make it. Surround yourself with great people (which isn't hard), work to your full potential, ask questions, get involved, play a sport, go to parties, read every assignment, proof read your essays twice -- don't skimp on your end of educating yourself, and Emerson won't skimp on you.

Great for these types of students

Emerson is a great place for creative, social, and smart students. If you want to make a difference, if you want to do something great, there's no better place to be. If you find yourself turning up your nose at the students involved with the arts at your high school, you probably should think long and hard before attending, because the campus is definitely dominated by a very eccentric demographic. Sports, while present and generally decent, aren't a huge part of Emerson's culture, so if you're looking to go to football games and pep rallies, this isn't your school. However, the athletic department is great and, by virtue of its size, closely knit, so it's a great place to be for athletes, as long as you're not expecting some kind of notoriety for your athleticism. Emerson does, however, have a niche for everyone, and the campus is very diverse so far as types of students go, so I'd really, really recommend visiting the campus before opting to attend and getting a feel for the environment and people.

Emerson is one of those schools that allows you to study and pursue what you want to from the very beginning. A lot of what you learn is hands on and you begin working the first day you arrive. Aside from your education, Emerson has so many organizations on campus that also provide opportunities for you to learn. The Emerson Channel is Emerson's college broadcast network. Students are able to use real equipment to produce shows of their choice. They are able to get involved in all aspects, talent, production, writing, etc.

    Am enjoying being here

I love Emerson College so much! What other place can you gain experience, in the city, and feel prepared for your future. I truly believe that Emerson provides you with all the tools to succeed, but it is up to you to achieve it. The professors are professional individuals in their field, that form a personal relationship with each of their students. A professor this semester actually helped me to receive an internship this summer at a local news station in California. The Emerson Student community is one that is heavily involved in work and experience.

    Bang for the buck

Emerson is one of the pricier schools in Boston. But I do believe that it is worth it. I believe education is priceless and Emerson is a place that teaches and educates its students in exactly what they want to do for their future. Also, with proper planning the finance office will work with you and you can apply for scholarships.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Plan ahead: The emerson student knows what they want to do, so have an insight of what you want to get involved in.
    2. Be Prepared: Work in advance with your finances so you will be able to attend the college.
    3. Work Hard: Get ready to work very hard, but in things that you are actually interested in.
    4. Have fun: There is so much to do at Emerson that you will have so much fun.
    5. Don't be afraid to say NO!

Great for these types of students

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in communications. Students who are driven and determined.
Students who want a hands on experience with their education.
Students who are interested in the city of Boston.
Students who love indie music and enjoyed their theater class in high school.
Students who have an opinion about the world and aren't afraid to show it.

My classes are great! Everything is hands on. I've already been thrown into the street to learn how to be a journalist, written various articles, and felt like I really got something out of every class. The classes are very long so it can drag on (about 75 to 105 minutes each), but I always leave feeling like I learned something.
All of the professors have some sort of background in what they're teaching, and may even be working in the field at the moment, which gives you an advantage because you're learning from the pros.

    Am enjoying being here

There's so much to do on campus and in Boston. I've joined many clubs, including radio, newspaper, and Imagine. There's many opportunities for any interests or majors, and if you don't like any, you can start your own. It's also very close and in walking distance to all the fun things in Boston, like Fanuel Hall, Prudential Center, and Newbury Street.
The people are very nice, there's a great atmosphere and everyone's very friendly. Students are very outgoing and the staff and faculty are great!
The food is also great. There's many options and I never feel bogged down by them. I can go to the dining hall, conveniently located in my dorm building, or one of the three cafes Emerson has to offer. They all have good food and decent prices.

    Bang for the buck

Emerson isn't great with financial aid and giving out money, so I'm in a lot of debt right now, but it's definitely worth it. I couldn't be happier, and I'd much rather be here and in debt while having the time of my life, than at my previous college, barely paying anything and feeling miserable.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There's so much to do and it's a great addition to college life! It'll give you great connections and experience that will look good on your resume! There's a lot of opportunities waiting for you.

Great for these types of students

The students tend to be very eccentric and hipster, if that's your style you'll fit in well. Very good for artsy people or people interested in film, the more creative and hands-on you are, the better you'll fit in.

Emerson College is very accepting to different lifestyles and cultures. We are LGBT friendly and are open to learning about the different states and countries our students originate from. It is wonderful to be in place where you know you are free to experiment with who you are, and want to be.

    Tips for prospective students

One piece of advice I can give is about class times. Since we are such a small college we have limited class time and space. If early classes aren't for you, Emerson isn't for you. Also, be ready to be challenged in a way you've never been challenged before. You are constantly expected to be innovative and creative.

    Academic Rigor

Emerson is not in any sense easy, but the work load, I believe is less than that of a state school. There are fewer assignments, but the ones given take long periods of time. This is great for a committed student who can be creative with every project.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are spectacular, especially in the Colonial Building. The sinks and showers are in very good condition, and are modern. The rooms are much larger than the average college dorm. The downside is that such an environment comes at about 7,000 dollars a semester.

    Food and Dining

The dining at Emerson is definitely acceptable, but at times frustrating. The dining hall has quality food, but it similar every week. You do have the option of different locations between the Max and the Emerson Cafe, but these are pretty expensive.

    What to do for fun

Emerson has many specific organizations that offer you things to do for fun on campus. I plan on being in the Dr. Who viewing society next year as well as the residence community, Writing Block. It's easy to get involved here.

    Bang for the buck

Emerson has an exceptional education, which I enjoy. Although, I would say the 30,000 dollars more it costs me to go to Emerson than the school I transferred from is too big a gap. I feel they could offer the education at a lower price.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I especially like to write and read in the Emerson Cafe. It is very quaint.

Great for these types of students

It is great for creative, innovative, committed, and financially able students.

    Campus Safety

I always feel safe on Emerson's Campus. This should give parents of prospective students peace of mind.

Emerson is an Arts school, first and foremost. Most of the students have come to study film, creative writing/publishing, journalism, theater, and other topics of this nature. The academic staff is lined with a healthy array of experienced professionals in multiple fields looking to pass on their knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have a heavy interest in a subject that Emerson offers Major courses for.

    Academic Rigor

Many professors seem to try their best to not fail students, but that doesn't mean students can get away with being lazy. And you shouldn't, considering that subjects under the Arts require passion and dedication that prospective students should definitely possess.

    Dorm Life

Small, and from my experience, somewhat dirty dorms await you in the Little Building. Pray you get into the lavish Piano Row suites.

    Food and Dining

    So-so.

    What to do for fun

If you like to smoke, this is the place for you.

    Bang for the buck

The college seems to have fallen under hard times in these economic conditions.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Any time you walk outside, expect your lungs to fill with smoke unabated.

Great for these types of students

Smokers, artsy types, creative people, thinkers, writers, actors.

    Clubs and Activities

There are multiple ethnic clubs for the small minority of people of color.

    Greek Life

I very much enjoyed my classes and activites at Emerson College. There are a lot of extra curricular activities that I had a great time with, even if I did spend more time on my organizations than on my class work. I was frustrated by some of the administrative policies, however.

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise prospective students to get involved as quickly and as as much as they can. At Emerson, you get value out of your involvement and hard work.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are time consuming, but not difficult. Outside projects are more highly valued.

    Dorm Life

There is only one classic dorm setting, with most of the students in a suite setting. this makes for an unsocial dorm experience.

    Food and Dining

There are not enough options on campus for the amount of money that is spent.

    What to do for fun

Visit the many museums, go to see shows, play and lounge on the commons, participate in on-campus activities.

    Bang for the buck

While campus life could be improved, Emerson really gives you what you need to get a head start in your industry. If you are serious about being a film producer, or journalist, or writer, this is an excellent place to be.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Emerson is very LBGTQI friendly, so we have a lot of gay pride. We are also fiercely anti-math.

Great for these types of students

    independent minded, career oriented, hipster

    Clubs and Activities

I can't imagine a place that has more to offer in terms of clubs and organizations. There are so many things to get involved in!

    Greek Life

I am part of greek life and I love it, but I am a small minority of the student population at Emerson. It is a great way to enrich the college experience, but without it you aren't missing a huge part of going to school here.

    Campus Safety

Being on an urban campus, the campus security work really hard to keep students safe.

Emerson is located alongside the Boston Commons, Public Gardens, and in the Theatre district. There are always shows to see, events occurring, and also plenty within the school as well from quidditch matches to residential life events.

Emerson college is a small, intimate community, and a diverse cultural melting pot. It is an Arts, media and communications school. It's in the heart of Boston.

    Tips for prospective students

You will end up living in the city; get a job and start saving money! Another thing: Network, network, network. Take advantage of all of the teachers, professionals and other people that you meet here at school!

    Academic Rigor

It is not very academically rigorous. Emerson has a lot of grade inflation (which they're beginning to try to minimize).

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great. Never again will you have a chance to live as centrally in the city as this! Most of the buildings are newly renovated. However, there are only four residence halls. There is not enough room to house all the students. Many students get kicked off of campus every year and are forced to find housing for themselves in a pricey apartment in the Boston area.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall is as limited as might be expected: Dining hall food. However, they are mindful of offering vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options for those who need them, in the main dining hall. But again, as it's a small campus, and there is only one main dining hall where you can use your meals (there are three other areas on campus to use board bucks or campus cash), it gets incredibly crowded during peak meal hours. However, you are so lucky to be in the area Emerson is in! The campus is literally surrounded with amazing restaurants. Right downtown, we have Chinatown flanking us on one side and swanky, upscale midtown on the other side. There is a wealth of dining and restaurant options where we live!

    What to do for fun

The campus is located right in the heart of the theatre district. There are always shows to see, operas, ballets, contemporary and classical theater, etc. There are fun wine tastings held all over the city. Emerson students are able to go to the Museum of Fine Arts for free! And of course, just the city and the location is beautiful; there are the Boston Public Gardens right next to campus, the Commons, the Esplanade (take a walk by the river). There's Faneuil Hall/ Quincy Market for food and shopping. There's the Prudential Center/ Copley Square Mall for food and shopping. The city is filled with yoga studios, and of course, there's the legendary Fenway Park for watching ball games!

Great for these types of students

Artistic and creative students thrive here. Marketing majors, film majors, writers, journalists, actors, directors, production/ tech majors, etc.

    Campus Safety

It's a dangerous area. Don't walk alone at night.

You'll find that a majority of the student body is comprised of the kids in high school who were writers, band geeks, comic book nerds, hipsters, etc. It leaves a lot of room for collaboration and creative freedom and teaches you how to network, while also making things somewhat competitive.

    Tips for prospective students

It's all about the essay! Write a meaningful essay, an honest essay, and be careful with spelling and grammar.

    Academic Rigor

While many people joke that Emerson isn't a 'real school' with classes like burlesque or costuming, a lot of teachers do like to challenge you, even if it's in a non-traditional sense.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are really nice. The Little Building is great for meeting people and the other dorms are just really nice to live in.

    Food and Dining

Emerson has better dining hall food than most colleges that I've been to. This isn't to say that there's gourmet food, but it's not bad.

    What to do for fun

You're in the heart of Boston, so they sky's the limit. If you're over 21, there are bars and clubs. Regardless of your age, there's bowling, shopping, places to eat, The Garment District, museums, movie theatres, etc.

    Bang for the buck

Emerson's a bit pricy (I'm being generous), but they do have great equipment for students to use.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Emerson is BIG on community. Take advantage of that. There are always multicultural events, it's VERY LBGT friendly, there's a Yule Ball, and about a million extracurricular activities for you to get involved in. Take advantage of that.

Great for these types of students

Artists, writers, filmmakers, future journalists, future marketers/advertisers, anyone with an interest in theatre, etc.

    Clubs and Activities

While Emerson isn't big on sports, there are sports teams. (We also have a Quidditch team!) There are extracurriculars for just about every major. There are a lot of publications (from a comic book anthology to a photo magazine to school newspapers), clubs, and events. There is also a dance company (EDC). Greek life is also an option.

    Greek Life

Emerson isn't big on Greek life, but there are fraternities and sororities. Anyone who pledges into one of these sororities/fraternities takes it seriously and they are very active on campus.

emerson provides unique, specific training in the arts of performance, writing, and film-making as well as communications. it's something of an art school and a vocational school, while still providing ba and bfa programs.

    Tips for prospective students

there are no undecided students at emerson. the majors (writing literature and publishing, visual media arts, theatre studies, journalism, etc.) are pretty specific and focused, so they attract students who know what they want to do. emerson provides extensive training and awesome resources for a few specific things. if you're someone who wants a well-rounded liberal arts education, emerson probably isn't right for you.

    Academic Rigor

grade inflation is a problem, but my experience has been that i get out of each class what i put into it.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are very clean and spacious. i haven't had any problems with drugs on my floor.

    Food and Dining

the dining hall is open long hours and caters to vegans and people with allergies. emerson also has several other popular cafes that are covered by the meal plan.

    What to do for fun

emerson college is located in the middle of boston. the possibilities are endless: hang out in the common, check out the parks in jamaica plain, go ice skating at harvard, look at adorable seals at the aquarium, go to the rare book room in the boston public library and gawk at letters edgar allen poe wrote.

    Bang for the buck

emerson is very generous with their financial aid, so don't get scared off by the sticker price. it's not uncommon for the emerson grant alone to cover half of that sticker price.

Great for these types of students

students who already know what they want to do. emerson has limited program options, but the depth of each program and the access to specific resources are unequaled.

    Clubs and Activities

there are so many clubs and activities it's mind-boggling. i'll point out that despite the emerson stage shows be exclusive to theatre majors, there are a myriad of student performance groups.

    Greek Life

i believe there's one sorority and one fraternity. they don't share housing, and i've heard they're mostly for networking with alumni .

    Campus Safety

it's impossible to get into any building without a student id. guests are checked in and out strictly.

    Am learning a lot

If you are interested in the fields of media, the arts and production, there is no better place to learn those skills than Emerson College. There are literally hundreds of opportunities both on and off campus to meet with professions in the field, get personal experience and learn how to get the job you want. After my first semester, I could set up and take down every studio camera for a live broadcast myself. There is no other school that allows that kind of hands-on training. However, if you are interested in any other fields (science, math, economics, psychology) Emerson is sorely lacking in good classes and opportunities.

    Am enjoying being here

Emerson Pride is an infection at Emerson College, even more so than the infectious love for Boston (the best city in the world). Emerson is a laid back school that is largely in the hands of the students. There is a warm bubble of creativity, acceptance, and goofiness among the student body. However, living off campus and not participating in extra-curriculars can leave you feeling isolated with the super-involved, ambitious students.

    Bang for the buck

I cannot lie and say that living in a big city like Boston is cheap. Between city spending, tuition and room and board, Emerson is not a low-cost option that a state school would be. However, you don't get the same opportunities (and the promise to graduate on time) that you would with Emerson. Also, Emerson has a great financial aid and work study program. And if you are accepted into the Honors Program, they pay half your tuition!

    Tips for prospective students

Make your own work. Coming into the application process (or the several on-campus organizations) with samples of your creativity is a must. Everyone has a growing portfolio as they make movies, write, paint, draw, dance, sing, and act on their own time. It shows initiative and will give you experience. Emerson motto: Create your own job!
Also: live in the Little Building your first year, you'll make so many friends!

Great for these types of students

Movie lovers, shameless hipsters, writers of all kinds, natural performers, creative minds and entrepreneurs, people who love to entertain but maybe aren't the most popular. Weirdos, geniuses, tattoo-covered poets are Emerson College.

There's a lot of seemingly useless general education classes you have to take. But, overall they're fine and make you a better student (not many colleges require a speech class, but more should!). Classes that pertain to your major are a lot more exciting, and will teach you a great deal.

    Am enjoying being here

It's a really fun place to be! Orientation week every year is basically a huge dance party. The overwhelming amount of students in theater and film make the school a lot of fun, and means that usually something is always going on.

    Bang for the buck

It's really pricey ($1,011 per credit), but it's worth it if you make sure to get involved. The whole point of Emerson is that you can become more involved in clubs and extra activities around Boston.

    Tips for prospective students

It's not really a true liberal arts education, you come in with a major and have to stick to that major for your time there (if you really want to change, you can freshman year but after that you're screwed). So, it's not a school for someone who doesn't know what they want.

Great for these types of students

Anyone interested in film, writing, theater, or journalism this is the place for you! Also, anyone who wants experience in this areas and is maybe interested in political science or marketing will thrive.

Emerson is great because it is so hands-on. For instance, you don't just talk about film techniques in a film class, you go out and actually try them for yourself!
I have also had great experiences with the professors. Although not all of them have a degree in teaching, they are experienced professionals in their field.

    Am enjoying being here

Emerson is definitely not for everyone, but it is for me. There is absolutely NO campus life here. The small campus is smack in the middle of the city on the Boson common. Some people (like me) love that, and some people hate it. You have to be incredibly independent because of the lack of campus. At Emerson you have a real life experience rather than a typical college experience. Students wake up, go to classes, then go back to their apartments around the city and do their own thing.
The location is unbeatable. You are literally in the middle of an exciting metropolitan hub. It's also nice to be so close to tons of other colleges. No matter where you go to school in Boston, you will meet diverse students from every college in the area.

    Bang for the buck

The school is overpriced, but so are most other colleges in the US. I suggest being released from room and board as early as possible because paying rent in the city is usually a lot cheaper than what Emerson charges for 8 months of room and board (about 12,000).

    Tips for prospective students

Try to reach out to students that attend other schools in the Boston area. Emerson students are great but typically lack diversity.

Great for these types of students

Artsy, independent, students who know exactly what they want to study.

As a Stage/Production Management major, it's extremely hard to be taught my craft; it's one of those majors where you have to get out there and do it for you to learn the most valuable things. Emerson is definitely that type of school, and not just for my major, but for all majors. We are a school that is about students taking control and gaining a ton of hands-on experience in their field of study. We have so many student-run organizations on campus that allow students to get involved in almost anything they are interested in, even if what they're interested in isn't their major.

    Am enjoying being here

Emerson is a really great place to go to school. The campus may be small, and we may have a smaller student population than other schools in the Boston area, but that doesn't mean that you don't get a fantastic experience! I have met so many different types of people here, and I have made friends that I know I will keep and cherish for years to come. Being a student at Emerson also means that you get to take advantage of the city of Boston, which is such a treat, especially coming from an Ohio suburb! There is always so much to do and see, always a show to see, always a new part of the city to explore.

    Bang for the buck

Emerson is really giving me a great education, and I know that it is one that wills serve me well in the future, not just in my area of work, but also in different areas of my life. As a student on a copious amount of financial aid to be able to attend this school, I am always determined to take in as much as I can in these college years, and Emerson is not disappointing me! I don't feel like I'm wasting my money in the least!

    Tips for prospective students

Emerson is a place where everyone is very driven and pretty much knows what they want to do with the rest of their lives, so if you are planning on applying, take that into consideration! It can be a little overwhelming at first.
Saying that, Emerson isn't for everyone, and that's not bad! If you are planning on applying, taking a tour of the school would be extremely beneficial, especially during the school year, because it gives you a feel for the campus and you get to talk to current students, who can give you a glimpse into their very busy daily lives.

Great for these types of students

Dedicated, hardworking students interested in the arts and/or in communication; students who are very involved and want to continue to be involved in their college years; students who are looking for a smaller campus while still wanting to be in a large city.

This is the school that never sleeps. Everyone you meet is involved in so much on campus, doing amazing, professional work. Half of what you learn won't be in class, but afterwards, when you go over next week's topics for your weekly radio show with your co-host, or when you go to Studio B at 8PM to set up the set for next morning's production, or interview the Senator's assistant for EIV News at 9. There is always more to learn, formal setting or otherwise.

    Am enjoying being here

Has been the best time of my life so far. Fantastic personalities, beautiful location (overlooking the Boston Common!) amazing professors, intense atmosphere...it's a blast. Granted, it's not for everyone, but that's because the school's so specialized (though they are moving away from that, last I heard). If your favorite sport isn't Quidditch, you may have a problem. If you cringe at the thought of seeing Man of la Mancha followed by Human Centipede: The Musical, Emerson may not be your top choice. We're a zany bunch, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

    Bang for the buck

Damn expensive, and they're not the best with financial aid. I'm actually looking at a transfer if I can't convince them to boost my aid. If you can swing $45,000/year before any sort of award, then go for it. By all means, the status you'll have as an Emerson Alum will make your future easier than otherwise. But to get to that future, you need to be able to afford to pay in the present, which is incredibly difficult for just about anyone.

    Tips for prospective students

Like any good college, there's a few things they'll lie to your face about on the tours. 1) The WiFi hardly reaches the upper floors, and the connection in general is likely worse than what you're used to. 2) The food is only good during parent's weekends and breakfast; on an average day, it's palatable, and occasionally inedible. 3) The library's extended hours during finals are a joke.

Each of my classes has taught me more than I thought they would. Even the semi-mundane classes like Intro to College Writing and Research Writing have proven to be a great asset to my work in the performing arts. The professors are more than willing to reach out to you and help you both in an academic setting and an extracurricular one.

Emerson is the type of school that if you fit, you fit in every aspect of the school. There are so many opportunities that other schools don't offer and the city of Boston is teaming with culture and learning abilities.

    Bang for the buck

Those who want to get a full college experience, can! The facilities are top notch, the dorm buildings are good compared to other colleges, the food is pretty decent, and nothing beats the atmosphere created by Boston.

    Tips for prospective students
