At Emory university every class is a challenge that you can handle if you apply yourself properly. You can not assume that whatever you did in high school will work here as well, but if you are accepted you should feel confident that you can handle any future obstacles.

Atlanta is a wonderfully diverse and exciting city. Emory offers many outlets for students to get out into the city safely and enjoy the night life. There are clubs, parties, great restaurants, movie theaters, and many other places to have fun.

    Tips for prospective students

Take your time on your application. Make sure that you really describe yourself and your activities. Emory loves diversity so if you can demonstrate how you are a unique individual it will help you stand out in the crowd.

Great for these types of students

Emory University is the right school for you if you are a hard worker, motivated individual, who likes to have fun but knows when it is time to buckle down and study. Emory community is welcoming and mature so if you are ready to leave mom and dad and begin/ continue your independence this is the right school for you.

The best part about Emory is the small class sizes. I have friends at comparable private schools such as Hopkins, Northwestern, Stanford, and Columbia. Despite the prestige of all of these schools, none offer class sizes as small as Emory's. This applies especially to intro level science classes. These classes at many of the other schools will have hundreds of students per class, and in the case of Hopkins, 2-3 professors will teach the class throughout the course of the semester. At Emory, lecture professors are employed to teach classes that research professors normally would not want to teach. And so, not only do students (even freshmen) receive the opportunity to establish a more personal relationship with the professors, students will also be able to learn better and discuss/ask questions more effectively in the smaller environment. Another highlight of smaller classes is that professors truly care about the overall success of their students and are therefore very easy to approach. Although classes at Emory can prove to be very challenging, perseverance and hard work will definitely help defeat that obstacle.

    Am enjoying being here

Because very few people on the West Coast are aware of Emory's existence, there are a lot of students that are uneasy about choosing Emory because they want to attend a school with a stronger reputation. However, if a student ever decided to come to Emory, none of that would ever matter again because there are so many things about Emory that make it so amazing. Both Emory and the City of Atlanta have a lot to offer for young adults. Emory holds many activities, especially for incoming freshmen, and so it is almost impossible to stay bored. Emory will also host concerts and shows, featuring groups like Super Cr3w and artists like Lupe Fiasco, O.A.R, and N.E.R.D. As for the amenities offered by Atlanta, there is an overflowing list of possible activities. Some of the cool places to check out are the clubs, local malls, sporting events (Hawks and Falcons), Coca Cola factory, largest aquarium in the world, and more. On top of that, Georgia Tech is a very quick drive from Emory, and so that adds onto the list of possible fun activities. Lastly, Emory offers hundreds of clubs, and if none of those seem interesting, it is very easy to start a new club. Wherever your interests may lie, Emory/Atlanta will have something to keep you entertained and smiling.

    Bang for the buck

Unfortunately, like all other top tier private schools, Emory's tuition is phenomenally high. However, the high costs of attending this college are well worth it, mainly for the reasons stated above. Not only are you receiving a high class education, there's a lot of fun available all around you. Not all schools in the same tier can say the same thing. From outstanding professors to high rated advisors to surprisingly small classes, there is nothing missing in the formula for a good education. To top it all off, Emory's facilities are remarkable. I've visited a lot of colleges, both private and public, and few can compare with the technology and quality of the facilities. Emory basically lays out the stepping stones to your future success with all that it has to offer, and as mentioned already, very few schools in the nation can say the same thing.

    Tips for prospective students

While good grades and high standardized test scores are important to admission into a good college, much more is necessary to secure a spot in the incoming freshmen class. Emory puts a lot of emphasis on diversifying its student population, and so it is imperative that you show how and why you stand out from the thousands of applicants. Emory also seems to care about how much you want to attend the school. They want to see your passion and determination. And so, be sure to convey this message well in your essays. I say this because many students that were wait listed at Emory were finally admitted because they sent in letters saying how much they want to go to Emory. If you show that you are qualified and that you really want to attend Emory, there is probably nothing that will stand between you and your acceptance letter.

Great for these types of students

Emory is a good school for you if you are someone that likes to have fun, but doesn't forget the importance of academics. Academics is always the top priority for Emory students, but they also know how to let loose when necessary. And so, characteristics such as motivation and self-control are necessary for success at this school. However, with that being said, because Emory offers such a diverse student population, it is very easy for students of all personalities to fit into a specific crowd. Also, don't be under the impression that Emory will have a southern atmosphere and be dominated by students with southern accents just because of its location. There are students from all across the nation at Emory and I have yet to encounter someone that actually has a southern accent.

At Emory, professors truly seem to care about their students' academic success. They make time to meet with students to discuss everything from ways to prepare for graduate school to confusing topics covered in the classroom. Emory tries to keep its class sizes small to maximize learning. Also, with classes ranging from Art & Architecture of Ancient Rome to Personality Theories, students have the chance to explore a variety of interests.

    Am enjoying being here

There is never a shortage of activities at Emory. In fact, during orientation freshman will attend an event which publicizes all clubs available at Emory. If for some reason none of the hundreds of clubs sound appealing, you can create your own. Every student has the chance to make the Emory experience fun in his or her own way. Also, because Emory provides several free transportation options to local malls, sporting events, and concert venues, students are able to explore Atlanta in addition to enjoying their time on campus.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive and Emory is no exception. Emory is well worth the high cost of tuition. From academics to athletics to amazing extracurricular opportunities, there are so many ways students can find success at Emory. College is a place to grow and Emory is certainly a place where academic and personal growth is possible. In addition, employers will most likely look favorably upon your ability to graduate with a degree from Emory.

    Tips for prospective students

If possible, try to visit Emory before you apply. It shows that you are serious about attending Emory and that you have a deep interest in the school. Also, try talking to faculty members and current students to get a better sense of what it is like to be a part of the Emory community.

Great for these types of students

Emory attracts a very diverse student population. All Emory students do, however, have some characteristics in common. First of all, to attend Emory you must be a very motivated student. You must be willing to work hard to achieve your goals whether those goals are being accepted to medical school or becoming captain of the varsity tennis team. Secondly, Emory students should be open-minded. Many people have misconceptions about going to school in the south if they are not from there. Don't discount Emory just because it's in Georgia. Atlanta is a great city and Emory is filled with students from all over the world. Also, because Emory has such an array of opportunities, it is important for students to keep an open mind and to take advantage of the resources available at the university.

I'm actually at the Oxford campus. The learning environment here is conducive to effective teaching. The classes are small enough that the professors take a personal interest in the students' education. Every class I have taken has moved at an appropriate pace for the professors to cover the material and for the students to grasp it. Also, the professors are always willing to help out after class time- through e-mail, office hours, etc.

    Am enjoying being here

I would have to say that choosing Oxford College of Emory University was probably the best decision of my life. I catch myself instinctively telling people I'm going home or My friends back home when I talk about the college. I've even said it in conversations with my parents- while in my house! There's a strong sense of community and enough to do to keep you busy and happy.

    Bang for the buck

While I love everything about Oxford College, the tuition is a little steep and financial aid can be fun to try to fight out of the college. However, the officers are helpful and want you to come, so they'll try to help with the cost as best as they can.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to the campus- You should see what it looks like and get a sense of where it's located.
Do an overnight visit- The thing that cemented my application to Oxford was my overnight visit. You meet real students and see what they really do in their free time and you get a real sense of what living in the dorm will be like.
Shadow a class- Visiting a class will let you see what some professors are like, and usually you'll be able to see how big some of the larger classes are.

Great for these types of students

Students who want a strong sense of community and smaller class sizes. You should be able to make your own fun (the surrounding towns don't offer the same sort of things that typical college towns would) or be willing to commute to downtown Atlanta or the main campus.

I'm actually a student at Emory's sister school, Oxford College of Emory. The classes are difficult and require a lot of studying outside of the classroom. You will find that students at Oxford are not only learning, but also learning to apply their knowledge elsewhere.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love living here. The campus is beautiful and the people are friendly. Because the campus is so small, I've found that your experience at Oxford will be much more enjoyable if you're an active member in clubs and organizations. It's a great way to keep yourself busy!

    Bang for the buck

The classes here are challenging but the cost of tuition is incredibly high. While the academic standards do live up to the cost, it's important to know whether Oxford is in your budget. If not, make sure you're applying for several scholarships and speaking to the Office of Financial Aid on a regular basis. If you're willing to make the effort, Oxford is willing to help you in any way they can!

    Tips for prospective students

Start on your applications ahead of time. Focus on portraying your true self through your essays. Remember that the admissions counselors want to know more about your personality, not just your academic ability. Also, visit the campus before you make a decision. It's the only way to know whether a school is a good match for you.

Great for these types of students

Oxford is a wonderful place for students who are serious about their academics. If you are an efficient and hard-working student, you will have no trouble adjusting to the academic life here. There isn't much to do in the area around campus, but if you're willing to take shuttles to Emory you will find fun things to do on weekends. Overall, if you are concerned more about your academic life than your social life, Oxford is the perfect place for you.

Even though Emory is known for its rigorous pre-med track, the other departments don't take their jobs lightly by any means! In fact, as a double major in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology and Theater, I can say with first hand experience that both departments have a rigorous curriculum for the material they feel like you need to know to call yourself a major in their field, and teachers do more than your average top twenty school (professors designate a lot of office hours to their undergraduate students, which as I've heard from my friends at other 'big name schools', isn't always the case for undergraduates).

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love my Emory experience. Sure there have been times when I've been absolutely fed up with classes and overwhelmed by meetings and group projects, but it's college. If you're not busy, what are you doing? But even with all that work, there is AT LEAST one thing every week that is fun and relaxing put on by either the college or one of our MANY student organizations. And, if by some miracle there isn't anything you feel like doing on campus, there's always a shuttle to take you almost anywhere you may need to go as a freshman without a car. If you want to learn more, watch our music video Emory Anthem on YouTube! But you might not get all the jokes unless you come…? :)

    Bang for the buck

Emory is really expensive, but Emory gives you the best of both worlds: academic rigor and prestige, and a nurturing environment that supports extracurriculars and social events. With concerts and laser tag on McDonough, carnivals in Asbury Circle, ice-cream socials in the DUC every week, parties on frat row, drum circles on the hill, casino night at Clairmont, a skeleton that gets you out of class, free food and alcohol from local restaurants at the B-school and even more then I actually have time to write, Emory makes sure that you get a playtime that suits you in between all that work.

    Tips for prospective students

If you need help, ASK! Don't ever stay quiet and act like you understand it all if you don't, because teachers at Emory make a point to be available for your questions. And, if you get to the end of the semester and don't do as well as you'd hoped, there will be more of a chance for you to fix a broken situation if they know you tried your hardest (that included SI sessions, attending class, and going to office hours!). Also, know where you stand as far as the goals you've set for your next level of education. They have mentoring offices and mentors available for you to ask the important questions and to get you on track with your peers. I didn't know about all the research opportunities available to me, and I went into the undergraduate science office one afternoon and came out with a paying research position. Literally.

Great for these types of students

All types of students. I am getting my BS and my BA and just from a science and art standpoint, I feel like I could walk out and get a job in both fields with the experience I've earned that also counted as credits toward my degree!

Emory is almost like a liberal arts school within a university. There are vast amounts of topics ranging from religion to sustainability.

    Am enjoying being here

The population at Emory is so diverse. I've met people who live not only across the United States but around the world. The social aspect of Emory definitely matches the academic environment. How many people can say they go to a top twenty school and have concerts with T.I., B.o.B, and Kid Cudi? In addition, it's not far from the city.

    Bang for the buck

Emory is constantly upgraded things from the dorms to the new university entrance. The main dining hall could have better food, but it's still good.

    Tips for prospective students

Emory is a wonderful school and if you really want to be here, I suggest you apply early, probably around Early Decision time to show your interest.

Great for these types of students

Students who are looking for a heterogenous environment where they will be challenged. If you want to be in an environment where you could find someone who is completely opposite from you, or even similar to you, then Emory is perfect. There are so many different people to relate to.

The classes and curriculum expose you to many fields of study. The graduation requirements compel you to take a variety of classes. Most classes are small, and even in larger, introductory classes, you are easily able to get to know the professor. I fully believe that the students and professors are both working for their own cause. Classes are challenging, but are an impetus for you to think outside the box. With professors who are known and recognized worldwide for their research, you know you are getting the best of both worlds. Professors are there to help and are available through office hours and challenge you in ways you thought you'd never be challenged. The best thing about Emory is that it is a very well-rounded university in that it is not only known for one academic pursuit. The numerous graduate schools and prolific ambiance of academia make this a great learning environment.

    Am enjoying being here

The people are what make your college years so special. The campus is so lively all the time-with concerts from One Republic to the Taste of Emory, there is always something going on. There are several resources available to try something new and pave your own path. You will always find people who welcome you with a hug and who will support your every decision. Transportation is easy as well through the MARTA and the Cliff shuttles to facilitate trips around the vibrant city.

    Bang for the buck

Emory tuition is a bit steep. However, it is a private school and the state of the economy is in an adverse. If looking for ways to pay for college, look at scholarship sites, Emory Scholars Program (merit aid for America's smartest and most talented high school seniors), Questbridge scholars (for certain income brackets), and Financial Aid offices or loan companies. From what I've heard, Emory's Financial Aid office takes a lot into account. Emory is improving in food choice and quality and has definitely improved in housing options in the last few years. I am a rising sophomore and freshmen year I felt like I was I was living in a 5-star hotel! The campus is beautiful and you do feel that the tuition money is going towards something useful.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of all the different courses here. Also, meet new people everyday-you'd be surprised who'd end up being your best friend. Emory has a diverse student body and truly celebrates its diverse cultures. Have fun and explore Atlanta, join one of the several student organizations, study abroad. and work hard, but balance it well with enjoying yourself once in a while. Emory Admissions is one of the few schools who look at applications holistically: sure GPA and standardized test scores matter, but your extra curricular activities: clubs, service, work, etc. also matter to them. They not only want you to be well-rounded, but their incoming class to be well-rounded, so spend time on your application and think long and hard as to why you would want to come to Emory so you will stand out. Also, visit the campus to get a feel of the place-ambiance is a big factor in college decisions.

Great for these types of students

Students who are truly genuine in their pursuits and are determined to get a good education. A great place for students who are life-long learners, who continue to be curious and actually want to learn what is being taught and are self-motivated. For students who are truly independent and mature, or even for those who need to mature a little. You must come not only with an open mind, but also an open heart. Emory is perfect for the kind of student who wants to truly take advantage of all opportunities given to them and considers academia his or her top priority-which it will become here.

Let's begin by saying that I am enrolled at the Oxford College of Emory University (Freshmen and Sophomore Students only) which is located in Oxford, GA about an 1 hour drive from the Emory University Atlanta Campus. Oxford College is a small campus with class size ranging from 12 - 20 on the average. During my 1st Semester at Oxford College, I found the Professors to be challenging, interested in their students, and thorough in covering the class material, the classes invigorating and interesting with a strong desire to TEACH versus doing research. I would say the Professors main objective is teaching the students. The professor are always available to assist students. If the studewnt continues to flounder in the class, there are special program to get the student on-track. I found that class discussions continued outside of the classroom after the class was finished four the day. Yes, Oxford College of Emory University is a LEARNING CENTER!

    Am enjoying being here

Due to the size of Oxford College of Emory University, I found it most enjoyable being here. With less than 1,000 students, most know everyone on a 1st name basis. Oxford ?College of Emory University is the place where you will find friends for the rest of your life. Most students go home on weekends; out-of-state students travel to the Atlanta Campus for social activities. There are many service and social clubs and athletic groups on campus. The Pierce Leadership Institue offers many unique opportunities to exercise ones leadership skills or learn new skills.

    Bang for the buck

Oxford College of Emory University is very expensive, but it has an excellent financial aid program based on need. If you get accepted Oxford College of Emory University will assure you there are funds to pay the bills.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early and apply for the Oxford Scholars Program if you are qualified. Visit Oxford College of Emory University, I am sure you will find it a warm, invigorating place where the students are highly motivated with many educational, social, career, and leadership opportunities. Apply for as many scholarships as possible; apply for financial aid early. Visit Emory University in Atlanta, GA. This is where you will spend your junior and senior years if you decide to attend Oxford College of Emory University. Ask questions, go to a future student weekend; I am quite sure you will find professors and administrators knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and friendly. Finally, visit the dormitory, eat at the dining hall and TALK TO OXFORD COLLEGE OF EMORY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS!

Great for these types of students

Are you top 10% of your rank in class, highly motivated, willing to study, intelligent, possess leadership experience, don't hide behind the other person (with the small classes, if you do not know the material, the professor will learn rather easily), do not skip classes, career-driven, looking to build long-lasting relationships, want small classes with the professor focused on teaching, enjoy small town living, and willing to work long hours, then Oxford College of Emory University is the place for you.

Emory University is a top ranked school that allows students to pursue a diverse range of interests. Their foundation for learning is through a liberal arts education, which allows students to get exposed to many different ideas and become comfortable with a concentration of study. Overall, the school provides an excellent atmosphere for students to excel in their choice of professional field.

    Tips for prospective students

I advise a prospective student to use the first semester to get a feel for all the options at this school in terms of concentration and major, and then carry out a set plan to fulfill a major. Reaching out to advisors and professors is also very important, because while they are there to help, they require initiative from the student and can become a great asset if accessed properly.

    Academic Rigor

It is not an easy school and there is a competitive atmosphere but it is very possible to have good grades. Being organized is key to this, and being proactive about work is also important, but any student is capable of excelling in this environment.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life at Emory University is very good. A lot of money has been put into building a lot of new dorms in the recent years, and most of the underclassmen are given a relatively new and modern residence hall. Upperclassmen are also given good options at the Clairmont Campus which provides apartment style living.

    Food and Dining

The food at Emory can be good but only is some places. The Dobbs University Center is the main eating facility, which is not too bad but not the best. The good thing is that there is variety in the kinds of places to eat, such as the on-campus restaurant Ziyas, as well as Cox Hall which has a Chick-Fil-A, a frozen yogurt place, and a sushi bar.

    What to do for fun

Emory Village has a number of good shops and restaurants, which can be great for a nice night out. It is small in size, but expansions are being done at this time. There is also another shopping facility being built near the CDC building from what I have heard, which should compete with larger shopping locations. At night, there is amusement to be found at various places on campus as well as off campus. Having a car on campus is a big plus though, allowing you to go into Atlanta where there is much more to offer.

    Bang for the buck

There are many times when I feel the same quality of education could be received at a much less expensive school, but when coming to Emory you do receive the name and world class education that people come from many other states and countries to obtain. Many students also receive financial aid and scholarships, so it is not expensive for everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is the on-campus mascot called Dooley who was believed to be an old student who now takes form as a skeleton who can sometimes be found at campus events. He also is rumored to dismiss classes if he enters one, which can be an interesting event.

Great for these types of students

Those who are self-directed and organized. Students need to also have a sense of independence. In terms of aesthetics and quality of living, Emory really ranks high in these areas. The architecture of the buildings and upkeep of the campus is excellent and contributes to better living. Those who appreciate an aesthetically beautiful campus will enjoy it here.

    Clubs and Activities

The student organizations and clubs here always keep the campus lively. I was active in a religious organization where many different activities, gatherings, and outings were planned. Wonderful Wednesday occurs every week, where many clubs come together at a place called Asbury Circle and throw a small celebration with giveaways and displays.

    Greek Life

I am not familiar with the Greek Life, but I understand that a good proportion of Emory is envolved with it, and it seems to have an active but not socially overbearing presence on campus.

    Campus Safety

Emory has a very safe campus with a good police department that ensure students are in good hands. There is an escort service provided and there are emergency podiums everywhere on campus with telephones and an alert button in the case of an emergency. Never have I felt completely unsafe on the campus.

Emory University is wonderfully challenging in so many ways. The academics and professors are superb, and the diverse student body is full of passionate people. Atlanta itself is the ideal location because it is full of opportunity.

    Tips for prospective students

Grades and test scores are important because they are an indicator of how well you will handle the academic rigor. Leadership experience is extremely important- Emory prides itself in attracting people ready to make an impact.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are intellectually challenging. The professors are top notch, and students are absolutely expected to attend class and give 100%. Many classes encourage active participation. The effort is always worth the reward though. I have enjoyed all of my classes and the professors really do want to help you succeed.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are pretty nice. The rooms are cozy but many have been recently renovated. Living on campus is very convenient. Housing staff are helpful as well.

    Food and Dining

Dobbs University Center (AKA The DUC) has a typical cafeteria. There are lots of choices and everything is very fresh. Cox Hall Food Court is a little more expensive but convenient. There are also two Einstein's Bagels, a Starbucks, a Jazzman's Cafe, and a mediterranean restaurant on campus in addition to the restaurants in Emory Village. You will not starve.

    What to do for fun

There are many parks in the area, and Emory actually owns nearby Lullwater park.
Emory is also close to Little Five Points, Buckhead, and Virginia Highlands if you like to shop. Of course there is downtown Atlanta for the club scene.
On campus there is a club, team, or organization for just about every hobby or activity.

    Bang for the buck

Emory is expensive. However, the financial aid office is very generous if you have demonstrated financial need.
If you do not have financial need, there are a few merit scholarships available in addition to outside scholarships.
At the end of the day you are paying for a highly respected private college with outstanding professors and curriculum located in a very desirable place to live. It is worth the investment.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are lots of nooks and crannies to explore on campus, and one of my favorites is the balcony of top floor of the library.
Dooley the skeleton is Emory's unofficial mascot, and as the Lord of Misrule he lets students out of class during Dooley's Week.

Great for these types of students

Ambitious, motivated students will appreciate the opportunities for growth in this challenging environment. If you are passionate about something, Emory gives you the tools to make an impact.

    Clubs and Activities

There are hundreds of clubs and organizations where you can find your niche. Volunteering is very important to students here.

    Greek Life

There are a few sororities and fraternities on campus if you are interested. If Greek Life is not attractive to you it is easy to avoid.

    Campus Safety

Having transferred from a large party school where I never really felt safe, Emory is a haven for me. I see Emory Police patrolling all the time and security features like call boxes on campus make me feel quite safe.
In any major city it pays off to be smart about going places alone and to be alert.

The quality of education at Emory is top-notch. The professors are extremely amicable and open-minded to the students' inputs. They encourage you to discuss your opinions and seem interested in what you have to say. The school's liberal arts background also instills a different approach to learning. For instance, in my history class, instead of just learning of the history of western civilization, we discussed the architecture and fine arts that defined certain time eras. Emory professors definitely add a unique twist to learning.

    Am enjoying being here

Currently, I am attending Oxford College. Albeit the small size, I actually find Oxford quite entertaining. It's extremely homely and you're able to quickly make friends. There are a myriad of clubs and many ways to get involved. Also, because it is a two year college (before you transfer to main campus), once you are a sophomore, you automatically become the seniors of the school. At first, Oxford may seem a bit boring, but don't be fooled by the peaceful campus; students find many ways to have fun...

    Bang for the buck

Emory is pricey, but definitely worth it. You get an amazing education, experience every bit of the college social scene, make great connections, and since Emory is a prestigious institution, you're bound to obtain a job right after college or enter graduate school

    Tips for prospective students

I would make sure I visit both the Oxford and Emory campus before deciding which school. Don't quickly dismiss Oxford! Though it is rather small in size, you make close friendships with your classmates and professors. By going to Oxford, you can experience both a small and large campus because you will eventually go to the main campus anyways.

Great for these types of students

Oxford is a diverse school and the people who attend the school are all different. If you enjoy trying new things and experimenting with life, then Oxford is great for you. Students here are motivated to learn and do well in their studies, so the atmosphere is rather competitive, but after classes, they know how to have a good time. If you can balance school and fun, Emory in general is for you.

Emory has a very strong academic background and is very serious about school first, play second.

    Will enjoy being here

It's in the heart of Georgia and there's plenty of activities and places to go to.

    Bang for the buck

It's very expensive though the college does make an attempt to provide financial aid to those who need it.

Get started on the application early. Make sure you have everything lined up and that you'll make the deadlines.

Great teachers, alumni, and current students that are more than willing to help and are happy to be there and plenty of outside the classroom learning opportunities.

Definately a great close-knit community with wonderful people and plenty of activities.

    Bang for the buck

It is really expensive but every cent of the money your paying is used for a good reason rather food, housing, and schooling, even to their shuttle bus system that goes to many great places.

Participate in plenty of activities in and outside the classroom. Be ready to change and definitely be open-minded Emory is pretty open and there no discrimination.

The classes here at Emory are definitely great for those looking for a challenge but they are definitely doable. They have such a great diversity of topics and subjects to explore and allow yourself to find your own niche.

    Am enjoying being here

Emory student groups and organizations often put on many great concerts or host a variety of interesting programs that can be both fun/enjoyable and can also get you thinking and involved.

    Bang for the buck

I have to admit that although Emory is a bit expensive, I have yet to hear someone say that they were not able to secure a job or internship after graduation. Also, do not be discouraged by tuition as much aid is available.

    Tips for prospective students

Take the opportunity to go and visit campus! It is absolutely beautiful. The faculty, students, and staff were very open and quite welcoming to me when I visited.

Great for these types of students

I could not be more pleased with my decision to come to Emory. Along with a wonderful academic reputation, Emory offers students many opportunities to explore interests and extracurricular activities. Students here are highly motivated to achieve success, but also know the importance of giving back to the community. Professors are interested in helping students reach their potential.

    Am enjoying being here

I have enjoyed my classes my first year, and I am glad that I have the opportunity to really get to know many of my professors. Beyond academics, Emory offers so many volunteer opportunities, support, and activities to fit all interest. Plus, Atlanta is such a great place to be a college student!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is expensive, but I believe it is worth all the money. Classes are small, so I have the opportunity to talk with my professors on a regular basis. The Emory community provides so many resources to students in order to help them both in the classroom as well as in future careers.

    Tips for prospective students

Emory is such a diverse campus, so make sure your application stands out. In your first year, don't be afraid to take a class outside of your field of study. Taking a random class might open your eyes to a new major you had never considered.

Everyone is pre-med, but only like a quarter of people stay pre-med. Emory is a very tough school, but it has great financial aid and advising, with plenty of tutoring services. There is a lot of partying, though, and it is difficult to find your niche if you are not a partier and if you are an introvert.

    Tips for prospective students

Put yourself out there socially as soon as you get there, don't lock yourself in your room, even if you are introverted. Keep up with your classes from the moment they start, and don't be afraid to go to tutoring. (EPASS is peer tutoring, free)

    Academic Rigor

Although it is possible to have an easy semester here, almost no one does. Almost everyone enters Emory with the intent of being pre-med, but a huge percentage drop it after the impossible prerequisites. Keep up with your classes and make sure to take advantage of tutoring and office hours, though, and you'll survive. A degree from Emory is worth a lot.

    Dorm Life

The dorms range from palaces to old, moldy nurses' quarters, but whichever dorm you end up in they will plan plenty of activities for you to do, and most people end up close with their hallmates. Just make sure to put yourself out the the first couple of months, don't hole up in your room.

    Food and Dining

Every freshman is required to have a meal plan with unlimited meal swipes, which are usable only at the DUC (cafeteria) and Woodruff (nighttime-only, salads, burgers, chicken tenders). The DUC is sometimes okay but most of the time it sucks, so count on getting tired of the food very quickly. It's also inconvenient that the staff of the DUC strictly enforces a no-to-go policy, which means you aren't allowed to take any food from the cafeteria, or any beverages except coffee and water.

    What to do for fun

Get to know people--there's not much to do at Emory except Emory itself. The Emory Bubble is notorious for shutting out the rest of the world. Don't kid yourself thinking you're going to an urban college, because Emory is in the (admittedly beautiful) heart of suburbia, with the only indicator of Atlanta found in the obscene traffic. Try to get out of the bubble with the Emory Experience shuttle on Saturdays, which goes to different places in Atlanta each week.

    Bang for the buck

Awesome financial aid which yields a highly respected college degree. However, the bang-for-your-buck value of meal plans and housing leave something to be desired.

Great for these types of students

Extremely driven people who also love to party--there's a ton of that, too. But count on spending an inordinate amount of time at club libs--the Woodruff Library.

    Clubs and Activities

While there are plenty of activities advertised in chalk on Emory's sidewalks, I'm not sure who actually goes to these events. If you go to Emory, check it out, I'm sure you'll make friends more quickly.

    Greek Life

About half of the student body participates, but huge percentages attend their parties.

    Campus Safety

Blue lights everywhere, and I feel very safe walking on campus alone. Just don't go places alone at times when you know there aren't a lot of people around, like on spring break when most people have left campus. My roommate was walking back to her dorm during spring break at night and nearly got kidnapped. But as long as you're careful, it's very safe.

    Diverse
    Laid-back
    Competitive

    Tips for prospective students

Emphasize your open-mindedness and enthusiasm for the school's research program. Find one or two aspects of the school that you /really/ like (that means you need to research into Emory before applying for it) and, for Emory's supplement, write about how much you like it.

    Academic Rigor

The best things about Emory are the professors and the workload. The professors are willing to work with you if you need help, and the student government association at Emory holds a program that pays the professors to take their students out for coffee in order to get personal with them. Then, there's the workload. It's a lot, but it's not going to be overbearing. The advantage to the workload is that students have enough to keep them busy but not enough to steal their social lives. Also, grade inflation exists.

    Dorm Life

It really depends dorm to dorm. Emory has this housing program where they put you in dorm that has a theme. For example, one of the dorms has extremely small rooms, but the halls are small too, and this fosters a stronger community spirit. This dorm holds the leadership theme. Then, there is the awesome environmental dorm that holds the go green theme. There are more dorms that exist too.

    Food and Dining

Emory's food plan is required for freshman, and although the food seems to be plentiful for the first few months, it quickly gets boring.

    What to do for fun

Atlanta nightlife is more fun than campus life, to be honest, but Emory offers just as much as any other college campus does. They host Dooley Ball, which is hilarious and awesome.

    Bang for the buck

I feel that Emory could utilize its monetary funds towards better causes rather than try to improve the look of the school. For example, the computer labs in Emory are technologically prestigious (Macs galore!), but students could care less if its a PC or Mac. More students complain about the food options than the technical difficulties that they experience with the computer lab.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Dooley, the unofficial Emory mascot, is a gangly skeleton that FREES THE STUDENTS FROM CLASS EARLY! Not kidding. There's a tradition that when Dooley comes class to class, the students are allowed out of class early.

Great for these types of students

Emory is top-notch professional. The students who would fit the most here don't mind being anti-social once in a while, although it's pretty hard to since everybody is so friendly and helpful. There are some party-hards, but mostly everyone balances work and social lives. Emory is still competitive, especially in the medical and business sectors of the school, but everybody finds the time to relax and lay out in the gorgeous Atlanta weather.
It's liberal in terms of the Southern political spectrum, but compared to other schools in the North, it's pretty conservative. However, there are practically no cases of intolerance towards the LGBT community; in fact, a certain majority of the student population either don't care or support it whole-heartedly.

    Greek Life

From what I've heard, it doesn't dominate the social scene, but the fraternities host a chunk of the school's social activities. But, you can totally be independent and not be judged.

    Campus Safety

Really, really safe. Emory is tucked away from downtown Atlanta, but it's not a long drive to get to the busy parts of the city.

Emory Candler School of Theology is keen on fairness as they decline to hold personal interviews with prospective students because they want to ensure zero bias in the application process. As such, rather than visiting the school grounds, I rated Emory purely on credentials, helpfulness, and substance. Overall, the school is excellent, and the knowledgeable admissions team outshines any green lawn and sparkling sidewalk.

    Tips for prospective students

Thoroughly examine the website before writing your essay. When addressing why you want to attend Emory, use professors who emulate the career choice you aspire to. The school puts great information on the website to be helpful, so show them it helped you.

    Academic Rigor

Emory is one of 25 colleges and universities named a “New Ivy by Kaplan/Newsweek’s in 2007. Expect the academic rigor to challenge and stretch your worldview. Want the challenge.

    Dorm Life

The school will help your transition to Atlanta, GA to be easy by providing you information on housing, daycares, and neighborhoods.

    Food and Dining

a great university for those who are serious about their education and getting a degree that will help them become best in their professional field. very helpful faculty and an incredibly scholarly atmosphere. the price is definitely worth it, though very good financial aid/scholarships are available!

    Tips for prospective students

the best preparation for emory is to take as much ap/ib classes as possible or probabable during your high school or secondary education. these will be a great jump-start to you academically, because if you do well (4 or 5) on the ap/ib exams, you will fulfill most of your “general education” requiremements during your first 2 years. this will give you the chance to explore some new academic areas of interest to you or start working towards your major. also, try to stay involved in what your passionate about and speak up in class. i know this sounds really cliché, but practicing participation will help you make a seamless transition from high school to college.

    Academic Rigor

the academic rigor at emory university is just right for the money. faculty have a great reputation for challenging their students, so open-mindedness is key. classes require hours and hours of preparation: reading, studying, and review--know what you’re signing up for. on the other hand, the university is a great support network of knowledgeable students, student supplemental instructors (sis), and phenomenal professors who will go out of their ways to help you succeed.

    Dorm Life

emory university residential services really care about student-residents and sustainable housing. emory has recently built completely new, environmentally-friendly dorms, which have new furniture (bed, dresser drawers, table and chair) for each student in the room and both fresh paint/carpeting. residence halls are always clean and bright, with common areas for group study and hall meetings. there are also some closed smaller rooms, especially for group or individual study. there are ras (student leaders-resident advisors) on each floor and each dorm is safe 24-7 because there is someone from residence services is always on duty. emory dorms also have a kitchen, tv/pool table area, and several laundry rooms.

    Food and Dining

emory university tries its best to satisfy each student’s dining needs. they have several vegetarian, vegan, and soy options. the food is good and every meal you get, you’re bound to get all the healthy food groups on your plate. of course, there are fast-food places nearby the university, but emory really emphasizes what’s healthy, so you’re not eating pizza or burgers every day. the staff is always friendly and welcoming, so an newcomer should not be afraid to ask about an option they do not see right away--chances are, the food item may not be out, but the staff will be responsive if you need anything special. also, because of its dedication to students, emory dining sends out a survey every couple of months to get a sense of how they’re doing and if the college population is satisfied with their service and food options. make sure to respond to those surveys! dining will change if there’s enough concesus on something.

    What to do for fun

as a university, emory is really perfectly settled, because around you is atlanta--a large metropolitan city! the university itself boasts a scholarly atmosphere because of its location--you feel as if you’re a student in a small college town with incredible resources down the street (like the cdc), only don’t be fooled that you’re in the middle of nowhere in terms of fun! the historic city of decatur is walking distance, which gives you access to a plethora of shops, restaurants, and bookstores. although mixed with suburban residential neighborhoods, the emory area is bursting with college and professional students, which makes it easier to make friends and not travel too far for entertainment. emory is host to international festivals, film premieres, tedx talks, and seminars throughout the year, so there is no doubt that students get to learn and experience a lot, while still having fun.

    Bang for the buck

emory definitely has the best bang for your buck. it’s sometimes called “the harvard of the southeast” just for that reason. there is no better place where you can not only earn your professional degree, but really be encouraged to act maturely, communicate ideas effectively, and pursue your passion, whatever it is. one really meets top-quality professionals and people here. you’ll just have to visit to believe it.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

emory’s mascot is dooley, the skeleton that is known to get students out of class periodically and especially on the week of halloween. everyone loves dooley and he has his own escorts. no one knows who dooley is: it’s emory’s well-kept secret...but it’s always fun to see him come out and interact with students and faculty. also, one of the most wonderful traditions at emory is the carter town hall event, during which emory hosts former u.s. president jimmy carter. it is a huge evening, and everyone is invited to hear president carter’s speech. another tradition is the tedx emory event, where the emory community is invited to participate in ted talks. another tradition is the emory movie festival, during which emory student-filmmakers exhibit their self-made productions. there are too many awesome traditions at emory for me to list them all without exceeding the word limit, so i’ve hit my favorite highlights. keep in mind: there’s lots to get involved in here!

Great for these types of students

    -interested in bettering themselves
-looking to create a better world
    -involved and creative
    -social activists/leaders

    Clubs and Activities

too many to count! although it might seem like an organization for everything under sun already exists, students here are very creative and initiate new clubs daily. volunteering is big at emory. ergo, one of the biggest and prosperous clubs on campus is volunteer emory, a social justice hub and a great way for students to get involved in atlanta communities and participate on international service trips. emory even has its own volunteer day. as you may sense, emeroids (nickname for emory students) stay very involved in academics as well as community.

    Greek Life

fraternities and sororities are available on campus for students who are interested in joining. emory is not a big party school, but greek life does a good job of hosting good parties. also, most of greek life are very focused on service/giving back to the emory community, so membership is a great way to participate in that initiative and make friends.

    Campus Safety

emory is a very safe community. one of the neat things: there are speacial poles with blue lights installed at the end of almost every curb that say “emory police”. if you feel unsafe at anytime (especially at night) you can press the button on the pole, and a police car will come to that exact location and pick you up, no questions asked. you will be delivered to your specified location safely. also, on a given day, you will find that police officers drive through the area. keep in mind, they are keeping check to maintain a safe campus for you.

    Beautiful campus and great environment!

    Bang for the buck

The cost is high, but Emory meets 100% of demonstrated need.

Great for these types of students

Students looking for a solid education with a liberal arts background.

    Will learn a lot

Emory has a wide variety of classes. I am currently unsure of my major, but as Emory is one of the best liberal arts school, I am sure to be able to use the knowledge I will learn here and apply it anywhere.

    Will enjoy being here

Emory's known for some of its traditions on campus like Songfest and other dorm to dorm activities. Atlanta itself is an awesome place to be. The location of Emory is pretty much the perfect college atmosphere - nice shops, good nightlife, and overall environment.

    Bang for the buck

It's expensive, but overall worth it in my opinion. I didn't receive as much financial aid as I had hoped, but the quality of education here beats most. I live in the Atlanta area, so I saved a lot on travel expenses by choosing to attend Emory.

This is the school that I plan to transfer to after I have received my degree from Georgia State University. It's one of the top medical schools in the state of Georgia.

    Am learning a lot

Being one of the top Universities in the nation, Emory University definitely provides its students with the best education possible. The courses and professors give each student a thorough understanding of the material and help you learn the subject matter.

    Am enjoying being here

Emory has one of the most beautiful campuses in the south. Students and faculty are easy to get along with and provide a great experience.

    Bang for the buck

Its a pretty expensive school but it does make up for it with a great education. However, the university does everything legally possible to empty out your pockets, such as: university edition textbooks, high dorm fees, and awful, expensive foods.
