Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning a fair amount in my classes. My professors are engaging and passionate about what they do which makes learning much more enjoyable. The class sizes are perfect and you can recieve a lot of individual attention from teachers which helps the learning process. I enrolled in the fall semester right after I graduated from my high school which was one of the best in the area. This meant that I had a lot of my basics down and my classes were pretty easy for me. The classes offered are more tailored to those who did not recieve a good high school education or who have not been students for any number of years. The classes are mostly basic and will prepare anyone well to transfer to another college.
Am enjoying being here The campus is small and fairly contained in Downtown Grand Rapids which means there are great places to eat and many things to see in between classes. Because there are no dorms and no one lives on campus it does make it a bit more difficult to connect with fellow students. And many students are non-traditional who are older and are coming back to school to earn a degree or who have taken a few years off to work and figure things out in between high school and college. There are campus activities and fun things that many clubs and campus groups organize, however there are usually few who attend because they have to commute to the campus and they aren't during regular class times. The education and learning environment is great but you have to go out of your way to get to know new people and forge friendships which can make the college feel a bit lonely when actually you are surrounded by many people.
Bang for the buck GRCC is a very inexpensive school which opens a lot of opportunities. It allows you to take inexpensive classes to help you discover your interests and potential career choices if you're undecided. It is also an excellent school for transfer students because you can take a lot of basic undergraduate classes that will transfer easily to larger schools at a much cheaper price. The small, intimate class sizes are great for those who have difficulty learning or who need extra help because you actually get face time with your professor and they get to know you one on one. And they also offer classes in many locations in the Kent County area such as at local highschools so that students who commute do not have to go as far to attend classes. And they have a very flexible scedule with many night and weekend classes offered for those students who have a full time job during the day. Great price for all the class options offered and the education you recieve.
Tips for prospective students Branch out and try to meet and get to know people. Or get involved in a campus club or organization to meet some knew people. And make connections with those who sit near you in class and your professors. Learning is much more enjoyable when you have someone to do it with and when you actually feel a connection to those around you on campus. You feel a sense of pride in your school when you make such connections and you could make a lifelong friend.
Great for these types of students Those who intend to transfer, Those with a full-time day or night job, Those coming back to earn a degree after being out of school for many years, Those seeking an Associates or 2-year degree, Those who can't pay for a larger school.

Academic Rigor most profs are laid back. they have the ability to keep the environment easy-going but you still learn all you need to, and then some.
Dorm Life i don't live on campus.
Food and Dining i actually love the campus food!
What to do for fun there are so many fun and entertaining things to do in downtown grand rapids---a true hotspot in michigan!
Bang for the buck definitely worth it!
Campus Safety downtown gr has had it's share of problems. but being in a diverse community such as ours, we're bound to have a few bad apples. but overall a wonderful place to live and go to school.

Food and Dining we have a subway in our school.
What to do for fun the school has clubs that you can get involved with. the school clubs range from religious groups all the way to sports groups.
Great for these types of students all people of all ages have the opportunity to go to that school. if you are not at the grade you want to be at, or you right now can not afford to go to a university or college.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Great College to start off with, saves money and helps get your general classes out of the way, while giving you time to figure out your major.
Am enjoying being here Close and convenient. Class sizes small, which makes it easy to succeed in classes.
Bang for the buck Great bang for the buck value! Cheap class prices with top of the line teachers and small class sizes.
Tips for prospective students Pick out your classes early, and make sure you ask questions, teachers are more than willing to go over things with you. Also try to buy your books used and also rent them, saves a lot of money in the long run!
Great for these types of students Great for students that want to save money, get general classes out of the way, and give themselves time to figure out their major.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers here are highly knowledgeable about the subjects they teach. They do a great job at making the curriculum clear, answer any questions you may have, and most will help you if they notice you seem to be frustrated or not doing well.
Am enjoying being here The faculty are extremely helpful, it's a small school focusing on one-on-one attention, there are many helpful resources, and it seems to be a very safe place to learn. Since it's downtown, there are many places to eat or hang out in between classes that you could easily get to by walking or by riding your bike if you have one so you don't have to waste gas money or pay for parking twice.
Bang for the buck Classes are very cheap, but you learn a lot. Books are also cheap, especially when you rent them. There is also another bookstore in town that you can rent books from besides the school store. Parking in the ramps is one very low cost with your school ID even if you're there all day.
Tips for prospective students Get to the parking ramps at least an hour early because they fill up quickly, especially around noon. Don't be afraid to ask questions, or get frustrated if you get lost. Chances are you won't get lost, though, because it's a small school. If you're running late or won't make it to class, call/email your teachers. They're usually very lenient and will let you make up work you missed if you notify them before class, even if they don't check their messages until after class.
Great for these types of students Students planning to transfer, non-traditional returning students, English as a second language students, those who need one-on-one attention, and those who need financial aid.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Don't be embarrassed that probably one of your friends is going to a big university like Michigan State, Western Michigan, or UofM because in GRCC you'll still learn plenty of material required to transfer to your top choice of college. A big plus is classes are around 15 to 30 people not like 50 to 100 in a classroom in Michigan State, that's crazy how are you gonna pass that class with an A if you're only a student number in their attendance than rather be treated as a human being here in GRCC in one on one talks with the professor if you need help because they'll be glad to help you out to understand the class material better.
Am enjoying being here Close to my home, nice, friendly community, professional staff that'll help anyone in need, love the food here, look up Heritage Restaurant it has awesome food if you can the money to pay for it. if only have around 5-10 bucks you can always go to the cafe, or Raider Grill.
Bang for the buck extremely cheap tuition compare a rough estimate of $1200 in GRCC to a $18000 in a big university. WOW better go to GRCC to take care of those required classes for transfering, or if you're looking for a assoicate or bachalors degree, that's fine as well.
Tips for prospective students GRCC to me was a backup if I didn't get the required ACT score needed for the bigger colleges, so I recommend to obtain an ACT score of at least a 26 to get scholarships of course. If you're planning to go to GRCC, plan ahead in your mind that college is a whole other playing field of difficulty to pass the classes with an A because the high school habits may still linger on you so shake them off especially if you're a procrastinator...DON'T SLACK OFF on your classwork, you're paying for your classes; one chance to get A's. Otherwise it'll be trial and error until you learn to do better in your classes the first time around.
Great for these types of students Students who live in GR, Wyoming, or anywhere close to downtown of GR

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Not really, the sane teachers you had in high school teach here also, and in some classes professors are meant to teach in elementary not college.
Am enjoying being here Not at all, classes are to full and not enough resources. The only good about this school is that my friends are with me
Bang for the buck Financial Aid and student loans are easy to apply for and to receive also and with the money you receive paying tuition for classes and other miscellaneous things won't be hard.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Grand Rapids Community College is a diamond in the rough. Where most people would write off Grand Rapids Community College because it's a community college, I implore those people to make a double take to go beneath the cover to see the chapters inside this best seller book. Grand Rapids Community College, or GRCC, is a inexpensive place where individuals can go to fine tune their GPA, take an inexpensive route to acquire prerequisite credits, attend a nationally accredited college and gain a two-year diploma, or all the above and prepare to transfer to a four-year university.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to work, keep your mind focused on completing the homework, and don't forget to become involved in on campus activities, but not to lose focus on achieving goals.
Academic Rigor Depending on the class and the instructor, you can learn plenty or you can be challenges and learn plenty.
Dorm Life Even though its a community college, it would benefit with some off-campus housing deals for those that have to be part-time students.
Food and Dining Plenty of choices on campus for food, and plenty of choices nearby. Also, plenty of people in the dining area at a time to be able to meet new people easier or to relax and study.
What to do for fun Tons of organizations, intramural sports, clubs, or just meeting up with people in the downtown area just seconds away from campus.
Bang for the buck You easily get more bang for your buck from the experiences that you gain from being at GRCC, which further proves that GRCC is a college plenty should consider stopping at first before going to other colleges and universities.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus N /A
Great for these types of students Full-time and living at home, part-time independent students, non-traditional students, freshmen fresh out of high school, returning college students, and transfer students.
Clubs and Activities Intramural sports, clubs, organizations, sports. Could be easier to locate on website.
Campus Safety Alerts on student emails help keep students informed early.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences GRCC is a wonderful community college to attend, especially for those who are first time college students in the family. I was so extremely worried my senior year of high school that I would not be able to handle the college experience, however, GRCC pulled me through. With the great teaching staff and maneuverable campus everything went swiftly and smoothly for my first year.
Tips for prospective students Do the work and show up. People mistake a community college to be comparable to high school, but it is not. It is a new jump up from the high school status and your future depends on it.
Academic Rigor The general education classes are not too challenging, but when you start getting into classes for your major they start laying down many projects and reports that will have you overwhelmed throughout the semester. However, it is no UofM.
Dorm Life GRCC does not provide dorms to the students
Food and Dining The Quiet Cafe to the Raider Grill to Subway to the restaurants downtown. They have quite the option to chose from. Though a warning to those short on money, on campus food is not cheap.
What to do for fun Unfortunately, GRCC seems to not have many activities open to the students. There are the computer labs and the swimming pool, but the main thing to do is just get together with a group of friends and hang out.
Bang for the buck For tutition, GRCC is a great place to go because it is a very reasonable price for a college these days. Though, the food, as mentioned, does run a little too high for those watching their pennies.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Its like high school all over again. There is not much of a challenge and it tends to get really expensive especially for it being a community college. If you didn't have good grades or a high ACT score it is an ok place to go.
Tips for prospective students If you have the grades avoid a community college unless you have to go because not everything will transfer so you have to be very careful.
Academic Rigor Moderate
Dorm Life None
Food and Dining Walking distance from downtown so there are plenty of places off campus as well as on campus.
Campus Safety GRCC has their own police department and they are extremely helpful.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I appreciate the small campus community. Where-ever I go on campus I meet someone I know. The professors are also helpful and respectful of opinions and beliefs.
Tips for prospective students Find out about the college as much as you can before you start. I missed out on a few opportunities academically, because I wasn't aware of them.
Academic Rigor Most students are serious about their academics, since there are many returning college students here.
Dorm Life There is no dorm life that I'm aware of.
Food and Dining There a few nice places to get food at a reasonable price on campus.
What to do for fun For fun I sit outside and study, work out at the ford field house, and walk around downtown GR.
Bang for the buck I gain a great education without much cost.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Student activities week is full of fun and you get a lot of free stuff.
Great for these types of students This is a great college to start in if you are unsure of what major to do.
Greek Life To meet people who are interested in the same subject as you, go study in one of the tutoring labs that tutors on that subject.
Campus Safety I feel perfectly safe on campus. This doesn't mean that I don't take precautions.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences GRCC is a great school for all students, whether pursuing an associate degree or just saving money by getting their pre-requisites. As a returning student, I feel comfortable with the small campus and friendly environment. The classrooms are great learning environments.
Tips for prospective students I highly suggest taking your pre-requisite classes here at GRCC. You will save yourself a ton of money rather than taking them at a University. Also, look for your books online and not from the bookstore. Sometimes it can be a lot cheaper that way.
Academic Rigor You will learn a lot of beneficial information. Don't listen to people who say it's just community college. The classes are only easy if you put in time and effort to meet the goals you desire.
Dorm Life I do not know as I live off campus.
Food and Dining The cafeteria serves great food, and is perfect when you're hungry between classes.
What to do for fun Go out about the town downtown GR.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences grcc is great for those coming straight out of high school. i enjoyed the art dept. immensely and would recommend it to anyone. those looking to transfer to a state or private school should look no further than grcc.
Tips for prospective students for those looking to the future, grcc does have 4 year programs, but i would recommend transferring after freshman or sophomore year. the internship and study abroad programs are excellent. especially the italy and greece trip.
Academic Rigor being a community college it gets a bed reputation for being sub-par academically, when in all seriousness it is quite difficult and stimulating.
Dorm Life the houses downtown are actually quite nice and are located conveniently up the hill from the city so there is no need for a car. also many can live in one house, with cheap mid-west rent. you can't lose.
Food and Dining the school is located in the thriving downtown of grand rapids, so finding great eats, and quality entertainment is just down the street.
What to do for fun art prize once a year is an incredible experience. going to one of b.o.b.'s five restaurants. and during the colder months go and see the grand rapids griffins take the ice.
Bang for the buck the tuition for grcc is cheaper than pretty much any other school around. you can save thousands by just going for a semester.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus they play films outside the school so those driving by in their cars and/or walking by can stop and enjoy a film for a bit.
Great for these types of students grcc is aimed for business majors, nurses, artists, and engineers. they have many more majors and general educational classes. but those majors get the most attention.
Clubs and Activities grcc does have intramural sports and tournaments of various kinds. also depending on the major the school offers contest for artist, photographers, and marketers.
Greek Life some fraternities and sororities do exist. they are minimal are are usually run out of the houses uptown near the school.
Campus Safety grcc does have its own campus police. through this system. students can take school through the criminal justice dept. then get experience with the campus police.

Tips for prospective students be sure to note the location of your classes. one of the main halls is about a 15 minute walk from the main campus. also join one of the student groups. they are accepting and make college life much more enjoyable and they are great for networking.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences grand rapids community college has great professors who are willing to help; there are about four different tutor labs free to students with professional tutors. it's very inexpensive, and a great place to take some classes. i've met students who are just getting started, students who are finishing up, and students who are coming back to school.
Tips for prospective students get involved. there are all sorts of activities and clubs. if you don't know what's going on, take a bathroom break because there is always a list of activities in the stall street journal.
explore. in each building, there are study rooms and socializing areas; investigate and find a place that works for you. the library is really great too!
also, take advantage of free stuff, especially during welcome week!Academic Rigor grcc is a community college, and offers classes beginning with teaching students to add and subtract numbers and going all the way up to differential equations (that comes after calculus iii). the more challenging classes are just as rigorous as a class found at a large university, but the professors are much more accessible.
Dorm Life grcc doesn't have dorms haha... this means you get to live at home! which, in turn means you get free food, and free laundry machines, and so much more. do not take your mother for granted!!!
Food and Dining we have subway, and a few other places: the raider grille and quiet cafe. however, grcc is well known for its culinary program, so any event has five star food!
grcc is right downtown, so just a block or two away can be found just about any kind of food! i ate tai today :).What to do for fun join a club... i recommend christian fellowship.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences grand rapids community college is and open enrollment school. tuition is reasonably priced. class size is generally small, allowing for more personalized attention from instructors.
Tips for prospective students threat this as a real school of higher learning. statistics have shown that those students who apply themselves at a two year college have higher grades than those who started their college career at a four year institution.
Academic Rigor grand rapids community college is a real institution of higher learning. do not treat this college experience as a warm up for the following two or more years at a university. one great difference is that instructors are more available to students. treat them as a resource, and ask for assistance when needed before it becomes crucial.
Dorm Life grand rapids community college does not have dorms; however, located in the heart of a historic district, finding lodging is easy in the large older homes which have been broken into multiple units. many are loaded with character.
Food and Dining you are on your own. vending machines are everywhere. there are several cafes on campus and many more private establishments in the thriving entertainment district, which is within walking distance.
What to do for fun discounts for academically and locally sponsored plays and musicals. very large public library is a perfect place to study. in spring and summer months grand rapids is 30 minutes from beautiful lake michigan and many public and private beaches. for glbtq students will enjoy the proximity to saugatuck, a gay haven.
Bang for the buck in state tuition is quite low. the costs of classes and books has always been covered by pell grants.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus as i stated earlier, grcc is located in the heart of a historic district. if you like architecture or are simply looking for a unique place to call home, the historic district offers many options and price ranges.
Great for these types of students any student who wants to test the watter, or have greater access to professors. tutoring is also available for those who request it,
Clubs and Activities i am not into clubs and activities; however, i believe there are many activities (four public museums, including the gerald ford presidential museum.
Greek Life i know nothing of greek life on campus
Campus Safety the campus is well patrolled. there are 911 call boxes located all over the campus. in general, crime in grand rapids is very low.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Grand Rapids Community College has given me a more worldly view, and opened my mind to the thoughts of the world. In all my classes, I learn something new- and not just what to put on the exam, but knowledge I will use to better myself.
Am enjoying being here There are many programs for all sorts of students! You can go to transfer fairs, they have an anime club, and many student activities that you can participate in year-round!
Bang for the buck I couldn't find a better price anywhere!
Tips for prospective students Write, Write WRITE! Writing is a big part of any college, but before you attend GRCC, see if you can beef up your writings skills for those papers you will inevitably have to write (especially since English 101 and 102 are required!)
Great for these types of students GRCC is great for students who are not sure what they want their major to be, or even if they do- it's a great place to test out if that major is best for you! Going into GRCC I was a psychology major, and I am leaving a Family Studies major!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Starting out at a community college has really got me going for the long haul. The professors are very helpful. There are also tutoring sessions for your harder classes and study groups for free on campus. Because classes are smaller in a community college you can really get a feel for college before you jump into the deep waters of a major university.
Am enjoying being here I love that this school is downtown Grand Rapids. There are many choices for food that you can either walk to or on campus they have Subway and the Raider grill which give you multiple things to chose from. Also the diversity here is awesome; many groups that you can join, many people you can meet. And being right in the middle of downtown means you basically cant miss art-prize. some classes will even put this into their lecture some how. Makes learning fun.
Bang for the buck I am just starting my third year and on my last semester for my associates degree. GRCC is less than half the cost of a major universities tuition and you feel like you can really talk to your professors. I have learned so much from Biology, Art, English, etc that I am now seeing light from new studies and changing my major. I'm glad I figured out I want to do something else here then when I spend thousands at a major university.
Tips for prospective students As long as you take good notes and study hard for each class and do your homework, there is no way you cant make it. Success is key to your motivation. Focus on each course and figure out what each professor wants on an exam or essay and you will fit right in.
Great for these types of students Students who are not sure on what major they are going for, who just need basic classes, who want to learn more about art, biology, english, history whatever your interested in GRCC has it. I really hope others will find as much pleasure as I have in Grand Rapids Community College

Am enjoying being here Many opportunities await you at this school they accept everyone who applies and are willing to help you better yourself. I tutor math as a part time job and see much diversity.
Bang for the buck Most definitely a good cheap idea is community college anytime here its no different don't waste your money going to a 4 year institution save it by going here.
Tips for prospective students If you are fresh out of high school you will feel right at home. If you are a returning nontraditional student get tutoring if you need it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This is a college that you get out what you put into it.
You have a great deal of selection when it comes to choosing your professors. If you want to skate on by and have an easy A, you can do that, but you won't learn much. On the flip-side, you can pick more difficult professors, and get just as good of an education as you would of had from a major university.
The choice is yours.Am enjoying being here I gave it 3 stars mostly on the basis of it being a community college. Compared to other community colleges I've seen, this place has a lot to offer. There are plenty of student clubs, a plethora of athletic programs, and heck, even Alpha Theta Pi is here. The amount of activities available make it easy to get involved and enjoying yourself along the way.
If however, you compare Grand Rapids Community College to any major university, you will find yourself wanting more in terms of student life.Bang for the buck Once again this comes down to who you pick for your professors and how much work you put in. It costs the same amount for a poor professor as it does for one who knows his/her stuff.
Obviously, I would advise you to pick the more difficult professors. Additionally, I would advise that you put effort into really learning the material, as opposed to worrying about the grade. If you put in the time, and you know the material of whatever it is you're studying backwards and frontwards, the grades will come. More importantly however, you will build a firm foundation with which to move up from once you transfer to a different institution.Tips for prospective students - Look up your professor when you pick your classes at (http://blog.ratemyprofessors.com/). That way, you at least have an idea of what you're paying for. Professor quality varies greatly, even in the exact same class! Do your research.
- Really try and get involved in some sports or activities. Because of the nature of community colleges, it is really easy to fall into a routine of just going to your classes and going home.
- Apply for scholarships from the Grand Rapids Community Foundation (http://www.grfoundation.org/). Nearly every friend I have who goes to this school gets at least $1,000 a year from them.
Great for these types of students Those low on cash.
Those who aren't yet sure what they want to do, and don't want to blow a lot of money in classes they aren't sure they need.Login to rate or flag the reviews
