Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors are very knowledgeable and make time to help you if you don't understand or just have a question. Each class I take regarding my major just makes me want to learn more! Even the other classes are interesting! You can sign up for a tutor for free if you need more help. They are really nice. For papers of all kinds, you can take it to the writing center for suggestions, help, reference work, for free as well.
Am enjoying being here I've met the best people here and get to have fun while learning.
Bang for the buck FREE printing and use of the computers in the labs. FREE tutors. Beautiful campus!
Tips for prospective students Get involved! There are SO many activities, you'll find one you like no matter what! Clubs regarding your major, a foreign language that interests you, performing arts, book clubs, volunteer organizations, athletics, fraternities/sororities, and the list goes on. This is the best way to meet people because you find others with common interests. If there isn't a group for you, you can create one! I'd suggest GVSU Alternative Breaks-- you will meet the most amazing people while volunteering nationwide! Entering as a freshman, it is a good idea to live on campus to meet friends. If you are very outgoing, go with traditional style. Everyone's doors are always open and they all know each other. A little more reserved could go with suite style or apartment. You still meet people because your building will do several actives throughout the year together (and GO to these! It's always fun!). For classes, there are many to chose from, it's hard to decide; sometimes you just want to take them all. The size of the classes are small enough so the professor knows everyone by name. Lectures are big, but there are discussion classes about 1/4 of the size and go more in-depth. Professors are always willing to help, so go to their office hours!
Great for these types of students It is a very friendly campus. Everyone is willing to help if you get lost or have a question. If you are green oriented this is good for you too! They have recycling bins everywhere, various pamphlets regarding water/earth preservation, and group clean-ups. There is a bus system too, which is great. Students get to ride free on the Rapid. They go to all the surrounding off-campus apartments and to both campuses as well as all around Grand Rapids. If you like to eat (who doesn't?) GV has the BEST food. Many different options (Subway, Papa John's, Chinese, Mexican, salad bar, bagel shop, burgers, sushi, Italian, smoothie/coffee places) lets you pick what you feel like no matter what day it is.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Grand Valley has an immense variety of majors so it is difficult not to find something you're interested in. The lectures are pretty small compared to other universities, typically 2-300 would be the largest. The discussions and labs usually hold about 30 students, offering a more personal learning experience. The professors have frequent office hours and free tutors are available and would fit with almost any schedule. Also, the professors aren't expected to do any research or independent projects for the university, shifting their focus solely toward students.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love being at Grand Valley! I stayed in suite-style housing my freshman year and wouldn't have changed a thing. The people are friendly and GV holds numerous social events to meet people and have fun. I didn't know a single person when I entered this school and it worked out perfectly. I met so many people in the first week ALONE and am still so close with my group of friends, despite the 4 months off for summer. Grand Rapids and the beach are both within a short distance from the Allendale campus. I am so glad I chose this school!
Bang for the buck Grand Valley helps the majority of students financially, which definitely helped make my decision to go here easier.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! Between clubs, sports (including intramurals!), events (even dances like the President's Ball!), and a really nice rec-center, there is absolutely no excuse not to get involved. Use the free transportation! GV is really green and offers bus transportation to almost anywhere you could possibly need. Take advantage of campus dining! It's not scary dorm food, it actually is delicious... which is more reason to take advantage of the rec-center to battle the freshman 15. Finally, I felt extremely safe and comfortable on this campus, and that doesn't happen easily. I could not have imagined a better freshman experience and highly recommend this school!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Although there are a lot of students at Grand Valley, they try to keep the class sizes small for a better learning environment. They also offer free tutoring if you need it, and professors are usually readily available for help if you need it.
Am enjoying being here It was really easy to make friends at Grand Valley. Because of the large number of students, there is many different types of people. This with good food and lots of things to do make it a great place to be.
Tips for prospective students Grand Valley is a great atmosphere to live and learn in. People will smile at you as you walk by and hold doors for you or help you up if you slip in the snow. There are tons of activities for students to do, from clubs and intramurals to watching the exceptional sports teams play, going to concerts and comedians, and watching theater.
Great for these types of students At freshman orientation, they tell you not to come to Grand Valley if you aren't willing to hold a door for somebody or smile and say hi to a stranger. This pretty much summarizes the people at Grand Valley. In our freshman dorm they also told us to leave the door open as much as possible, and people would just walk around from room to room to say hello. They also had seminars for freshman that were all about making friends and adjusting to college.
For older students, there are also lots of parties to go to at off-campus apartments, but the actual campus is a dry campus.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students Live on campus! It's a great way to meet people. Don't be afraid to ask faculty/staff for help. They're very friendly, and they genuinely care. If you can get an on-campus job, it's a really great opportunity. Most offices work around your class schedule and are very flexible if you need extra time to study.
Great for these types of students It really is a great university, and I think anyone and everyone would enjoy it. It's 15-20 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids, and the bus system makes frequent trips between the Allendale and GR campuses. Allendale is a quiet town, but it's not a far drive to Lake Michigan or to Grand Rapids. Anyone can find their niche if they're willing to look for it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Professors are so knowledgeable and always more than willing to help inside and outside of class. Use your professors wisely!! They want to help you succeed in their class and if you get to know them, would love to write a letter of recommendation for you later down the road. The more you go to office hours, the better your education will be and the more likely you are to succeed beyond the classroom.
Am enjoying being here Being in the Laker Marching Band, Basketball Band, and participating in church services around campus are the ways that I choose to get involved and I have so much fun. There are so many ways to get involved around campus from volunteering and making a difference to just joining an intramural sports team or a club where you can meet with people that share the same interests as you. We even have a Renaissance Fair during the fall! No matter what you are interested, GV probably has it and it is most likely going to be an amazing program/club and definitely experience. And if it isn't, you can put us on the map for whatever interests you!
Bang for the buck Definitely! Tuition here is dirt cheap compared to my friends attending private college and even CMU, MSU, and U of M. Being cheaper does not make it an easy college by any means! So many professors are doctors in their field and have masters and other degrees in more than one field. These professors are also here to help you, no class is taught by a graduate assistance unless the professor has a conflict and cannot make class. Getting your money's worth is easy to do at GV!
Tips for prospective students Remember the reason you are here: To study hard, learn lots, and get good grades. You need to put school and class first. You are paying for it, right? Put your best effort into it so you will have no regrets later. Be smart while you are at college! Drinking and other illegal activities may seem fun, but really is not worth it. You HAVE TO have a social life. In order to relieve stress and not go completely insane, make sure you are spending a good amount of time with your friends! Make memories, push your limits, make new friends, go outside your comfort zone. College is a life-changing experience, make it a great one.
Great for these types of students Grand Valley has so many courses and country-wide recognized sports and majors, it is good fit for many students. I am going into athletic training and physical therapy, both of which GV is very well known for. Just check on the website, which is really easy to use, and make sure we have your program. I promise you won't regret going here!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There is a broad variety of classes that are available and the professors are great. They make you feel important by learning and calling you by name. They make an effort to get on a 1-on-1 relationship with each student.
Am enjoying being here The atmosphere is great and the people you meet whether in classes or during the social events make the experience very enjoyable. There are plenty of social clubs and organizations that students can join to meet new people and have a support group to go to for things like exam study groups or things like that.
Tips for prospective students It is a larger school so by joining clubs and organizations, you will be able to meet more people especially if you live off campus.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students Take a language class and study abroad! The language lab is wonderful and the people at the study abroad center are very helpful. There are a ton of student organizations and local places to volunteer, so get involved! And the campus is really nice, with new facilities and a lot of support staff.
Great for these types of students Students who want to enjoy their education, and who are not so concerned with prestige. This is not a very big party school, but it is fun and a little more relaxed than some others, I think. But having an idea of what you want to do is advised, since graduating in four years can be a challenge because of all the required classes.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers take time out of their schedules to help you, ( although it is a given that you have to do some work yourself.) On top of that the library database is the best ever and easy to navigate through with a little guidance, ( it is a great help when you need to write a paper.) Tutoring is free for all attending students. They even have walk in tutoring sessions.
Am enjoying being here It is hard to get used to it, as a person of color I don't know what it is but it is hard to relate and communicate with absolutely everyone on campus without some sort of racial lines being recognized. Grand Valley State is working very hard to blurr and eventually make the school itself a place where those lines may exist but not matter at all.
Bang for the buck Your freshman year it is expensive but you get a meal plan 2-3 meals a day on your card. money on your laundry card AND debit dollars which is basically anytime money that you can used when going to any convenience store on campus. Also any sporting events for students are free( for all students), and printing paper at most computer labs is free also( for all students) . This is my first year and I don't need anything concerning extra food ( unless I have a hankoring for home cooked meals) while on campus. Money wise and food wise for your freshman year you are covered.
Tips for prospective students Study hard and use the tutoring opportunities as soon as you see you have difficulty in a class. Better late then never. Try to stay active in many on campus activities but, if you get a chance go down town and check it out, they have something going on every night. Also when in doubt talk to a counselor, RA, or some type of faculty when you feel stressed out or need help. That is what they are there for. College is about higher learning not stressing out and crying everyday because its hard. Get the help you need and keep it moving! :)
Make sure you consider who you are going to live with before you agree to live wherever you are going to live. It can be extremely stressful to live with people you have a problem living with and not be able to move out it you have waited too long to make changes.Great for these types of students Great for students that need smaller size classes and a more structured learning.
For the students that need hands on teachers.
For students that need to be around very nice and welcoming people and have a great sense of community.
For students that are positive, like to try new things and are or would like to be optimistic about their future career in the college or their lives for that matter.
For students that are culturally aware, and like to experience other cultures as well.
For students that have been home schooled, only children, or have siblings.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Am enjoying being here Campus life is very exciting if and when you know where to hang out.
Bang for the buck Grand Valley is a very cheap institution, but that does not affect how competitive it is.
Tips for prospective students Try to meet people that you have something in common with in your first few weeks here.
Great for these types of students If you love the snow and are looking to widen your view of the world, then Grand Valley is for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of the professors are really great. They try to teach to all types of learners (auditory, visual, etc.) and most have done an excellent job. The one professor I, and the rest of my class, had a problem with was replaced because the chemistry department recognized the issue and are doing what they can to work everything out. Grand Valley cares a lot about their students and want everyone to succeed.
Am enjoying being here There is something here for everyone. We have a wide variety of clubs and organizations to join and the people are all really nice. The only issue that I've found is that the campus clears out on the weekend. It's almost creepy how quiet it gets. Many of the students are local, so they go back home and other just go home or go to other campuses for the weekend. Since not many people stay, Grand Valley doesn't schedule much to do on the weekend. Going downtown is always an option for the few that remain, but without a car, riding the bus can be a hassle since it only runs every our, if it's on time. Most of the clubs downtown are 21 and up on the weekends, so those who are not of age yet either can't go or get a fake ID to get in, which is obviously illegal and unadvised. It's still a fun place to be, you just have to know where to look to find things to do.
Bang for the buck Grand Valley is becoming a very well known school and with the ever growing medical mile in Grand Rapids, an undergrad at GV looks good for grad school applications. Also, we are provided with many services that other schools have to pay extra for. Students are give money to do laundry if they live on campus, students can ride the buses for free and they take you almost anywhere, the rec center is free for students and is a very nice, high quality facility. The food provided on campus, while it may not be the nice home-cooked food from back home, is better than most colleges. The Grand Valley campus is gorgeous and I would advise anyone who loves the nature experience that we have in Michigan to come here. It doesn't have the big city feel that many other campuses, like U of M, have. It's a nice, relaxing environment to live and study in.
Tips for prospective students Understand that college is not like high school. You probably won't know many of the kids in your classes and that's ok. Find where you fit in and be yourself. The teachers may not assign homework that is due necessarily, but reading the textbooks, doing problem sets they post online, and whatever other material they provide is well worth doing. It may seem like a waste of time, even if you think you already know how to do something, but in the end it is well worth the time spent doing it when you get an A on an especially hard test.
Great for these types of students If you're going to college expecting a bunch of wild parties every weekend, Grand Valley is not the school for you. However, for those students that want a great education with smaller class sizes, you would fit in well here. The classes here are great for any student. They are challenging, but the teachers do what they can so that every student understand the material and is sufficiently prepared for the exam and further courses in the subject. If you want to be a name rather than just a number, I highly recommend coming to Grand Valley.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have been at Grand Valley for two semesters now and all of my professors are very knowledgeable, but also know how to show you their knowledge so you understand it. Also, my classmates are willing to help out if I don't understand as well.
Am enjoying being here Grand Valley has a great environment that promotes academics and extracurricular. They offer many clubs, which I have joined two already. They have a beautiful campus and friendly staff.
Bang for the buck The cost of tuition is fairly low compared to other universities and the campus is well worth the cost with its library, academic buildings, fountains, bridges and trees!
Tips for prospective students Don't be nervous for college because it's a great and memorable experience! Get to know your classmates and professors because it will help you out. A couple days before classes make sure to look around campus and get familiar with it because it will help with the first day and allow you to be more calm about that semester.
Great for these types of students Any academic and career driven student is great for Grand Valley State University. It is rigorous, but beyond manageable and will help you out with your future in every aspect of life.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I would have to say that I am am learning quite a bit. Although I have a had a tough semester, professors are always here to help you and to make sure you understand something. They are sympathetic and I am glad that I attend this school. it is such a wonderful environment and there are so many resources to use. I have learned a lot about writing. I have also learned alot about math. This school is mainly teaching me to become a liberally educated person and i love it!
Am enjoying being here I have to say that i am not a very social person so I don't talk to many people, But none the less I am enjoying it here. Grand Valley has so many activities and events to go to. I love the football games and Laker Late Night. It creates away for you to get out and get to know people and there isn't anything wring with that. I enjoy being around a loving environment. I t is such a warm feeling. colege is what you make it so make the best if it!
Tips for prospective students Always pay attention and come to Grand valley ready to have fun and learn. It is a wonderful experience!!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I've enjoyed all of my classes and I have yet to have an inadequate professor. There is a wide curriculum with a little of something for everyone.
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful and the new honors college is amazing. The people are really friendly, and
Bang for the buck Not as expensive as some of the name brand colleges out there, such as MSU, but it isn't community college. You get what you pay for, however, which is a well-rounded, quality education.
Tips for prospective students Be careful signing up for classes, make sure you know which campus the class is at and ensure you have enough travel time. Even make sure you have enough travel time to get around the campuses, ten minutes is not enough if the professors like to go over. I recommend having an hour break or so between classes, it gives a chance to unwind, grab a bite to eat, etc.
Great for these types of students Hardworking, fun-loving, diverse-interests, and those who own a good down or wool jacket.

Academic Rigor depends on your major and if you take a minor.
Dorm Life if you have a good roommate then nothing can really go wrong.
Food and Dining kliener is like high school food, fresh is much better, then the connection has better food than everything else but it's far away from freshman living centers.
What to do for fun you can go exploring in the ravines or go downtown, depending on what you prefer.
Great for these types of students normal?
Clubs and Activities plenty
Greek Life useless
Campus Safety gives you tickets if you park where you can't.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot When I came to college, I expected to be filled with all kinds of new information and I would say that I truly was. Each of my professors were amazing teachers. They make sure you really understand the material and were all willing to stay after and help if I needed it. At Grand Valley, courses are generally well-taught, and teachers try to challenge you without being too difficult. It is a great school with high standards for each of its students.
Am enjoying being here There are always plenty of things to do around campus. The school has a movie theater and plays recently-made films every week. Intramurals are always lots of fun too because you get to meet a lot of friends this way. Outside of school, there are dance clubs, bars, hookah, restaurants, and plenty other things for college students to enjoy. Some of the places are hard to get to by bus if you don't have a car, but it is only a 5-10 minute drive to see the night-life!
Bang for the buck Grand Valley has an amazingly low tuition, especially considering how nice the school is. Almost all the buildings are newly made and I have only had great experiences with all my professors. It is considerably cheaper to go here compared to MSU, UofM, and Central Michigan University while still getting a quality education. GVSU is a diamond in the rut and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Tips for prospective students Before coming to college, prepare yourself for the change. I saw a lot of people coming in expecting it to be like high school and waiting until the last minute to write essays and study for tests. You are moving on to a higher level of education and you have to prepare for the change. If you come in ready to conquer and work hard, it will make college so much easier for you.
Great for these types of students GVSU is a great school for anyone looking for a high-quality education with moderate-sized classes and a peaceful atmosphere. The campus is very safe with no problems at all and a great place to be.

As a student going into education after leaving class somedays I feel so powerful from what I've learned in class. It makes me very excited to get into my own classroom.
Am enjoying being here Not only is Grand Valley's campus beautiful, the people at Grand Valley are very genuine and nice. I have met some of my best friends at Grand Valley. I also work on campus and love my job here!
Bang for the buck There are multiple things that give Grand Valley Bang for the buck. You get to print for free!! There is a bus that can take you to and from campus' which is free as well! It saves you a lot of gas! There are also lots along the bus route that you can park in for free!
Tips for prospective students Try to get involved in student organizations! You can meet lots of friends and feel good about being involved!

Will enjoy being here When I visited the campus everything felt right, nice dorms, nice new buildings, and nice rec. center.
Bang for the buck On a campus tour, me and my friend were shocked to see everything was free: rec. center, tutors, computer use, PRINTING! I feel you get your money worth at GVSU.
Tips for prospective students I highly suggest any future students to apply to GVSU regardless if you think you can get in.
Great for these types of students Anyone looking for a mix between MSU or UofM and a Community school should definitly apply. GVSU is definitly building up...

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers work with me very well. I heard in High School that most professors do not give students the time of day, but that is not true. Every one of my professors knows my name and I can go to them about anything, especially if I need work assistance inside and out the class room. They are very polite and welcoming. I am glad that they show they care for me and want to see me succeed in life. They help me on everything I need to know or learn.
Am enjoying being here I love going to Grand Valley because all the students here are very nice. I live three hours away from Allendale. I came to Grand Valley without knowing anyone at all. Since I have been here I have met a lot of new friends. I have not ran into any conflict once so ever. Everyone is open to a new challenge and that is what I enjoy the most, no one is afraid of meeting and greeting.
Bang for the buck Grand Valley always have something going on for students to get into and to interact with others. Never is there a dull moment on this campus. It is very live and well kept. There are so many different Sororities and Fraternities that you can join and many clubs and sports. Just go for it, sign up for any and everything. You never know what you may like, it could be the weirdest thing. Don't hold back just do it.
Tips for prospective students The tips that I give to students that are looking into Grand Valley is that make sure you are open to a variety of things and willing to have fun. Make sure you can balance both a social life along with school. Because the one thing that will hold you back is putting your social life first. Make sure you have your priorities in check. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. Once you do its hard to catch back up. But mainly enjoy yourself it is a great experience and I am proud of my decision.
Great for these types of students Whats great for students is the on campus living. If you decide to go to Grand Valley and it is your first year in college life. LIVE ON CAMPUS! Living on campus is the best thing I could have ever decided to do. You get a wonderful experience with interacting with students and faculty members, you are informed with all the events that are taking place, you have easy access every classroom locations, and you have more fun. Plus you can get a meal plan with your living style and the food is great.

Am enjoying being here I've met some amazing people here, and I know these are people I will be friends with for the rest of my life! Although a little boring at times, getting involved and trying to stay busy by keeping up on homework, staying active and being in organizations are great ways to meet new people and be the best person you can be.
Bang for the buck Definitely worth your costs. Beautiful campus, lots to get involved in, and great people. Classes and professors are wonderful!

Am enjoying being here The campus is so beautiful. Its a wonderful place to live. I really do enjoy it here. There are so many different activities that one can get involved in.
Bang for the buck The food is pretty decent, and the housing is nice. The professors are wonderful, and are very open. Its easy to be able to go up to a professor and ask a question if you need to.
Tips for prospective students Keep your grades up in High school, and apply early.

Sidewalks make it easy to get back and forth to classes and there are plenty of places to sit down and get homework done on campus. A very nice environment and great learning opportunities.

Am enjoying being here The teachers are a lot of fun and there are a lot of great people as classmates. I have made so many friends here.
Bang for the buck Grand Valley is very reasonably priced, but it is a great school with many options for degrees and lots of classes.
Tips for prospective students Try to have fun, but remember that you are paying for your education, so try to do your best while still having fun and making great friends.
Great for these types of students Grand Valley is great for students who are looking for a school that has many students, but it not overwhelmingly large. Grand Valley is not in the middle of a large city, but it is close to Grand Rapids.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Grand Valley is a school filled with diversity, respect, and wonderful people. Not only do the professors do everything in their power to help you succeed, but the students are dedicated to their education, service to the community, and the betterment of their lives. It is difficult to find a University so invested in sustainability, the advantages of studying abroad, and the welfare of every student, but Grand Valley is committed to each of these and so much more.
Tips for prospective students Freshmen year can be intimidating. Don't be afraid to join organizations. With over 300 clubs on campus, it is simple to find something that you enjoy. I have friends in community service organizations, a cappella groups, and the Quidditch team! Don't be afraid to try new things.
Academic Rigor As with life, what you get out of your work is what you put into it. Grand Valley offers many rigorous courses to challenge students and to help them expand their knowledge.
Dorm Life Meeting new people is one of the highlights of dorm life. Live on campus! It will enhance your college career ten fold.
Food and Dining There are several food places on campus, and each offer a variety of food choices. I always find something good to eat.
What to do for fun Not only is it fun to join organizations, but Grand Valley is also in close proximity to Grand Rapids. You can go ice skating in Rosa Parks Circle, hear concerts at Devos Hall or Van Andel Arena, watch fireworks, and go to ArtPrize. If you head in the other direction, Lake Michigan is only a hop, skip, and a jump away. Students love to play in the lake, watch the sunset, and just go on road trips. There are always fun activities happening on and off campus.
Bang for the buck Grand Valley is THE most affordable school or the opportunities they offer in Michigan.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the center of campus is the Little Mac Bridge. People enjoy jumping on the bridge and feeling the spring of its suspensions.
Great for these types of students Grand Valley is a great school for anyone who wants the small school feel in a big school setting. All of the professors truly care about their students and it is easy to become recognized on campus.
Clubs and Activities Grand Valley has over 300 organizations from which students can participate. There is an organization for everyone. Students can water ski, sing, dance, help the community, play with paint ball guns, participate in civil war reenactments, play sports, and speak out for people who don't have a voice.
Greek Life Grand Valley has a great Greek Life program with which students can participate. The members are close, and they have a great bond with the community. Everyone who joins Greek Life is happy they did.
Campus Safety Campus Safety, DPS, is an active and deeply involved group of individuals. They are constantly patrolling campus, and making sure that there is nothing to prohibit our safety.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I haven't yet attended classes; I'm currently trying to get enough scholarship money to pay for tuition, so I can't really say much about the teachers or the classes. The campus seems to be very well-kept and modern, the community wholesome and maintained, and the faculty I've met represent their school with grace. It's the only school I've found within 100 miles of my home that offers a major for someone who's into fiction writing, so I'm hoping to emerge as a more polished writer overall.
Tips for prospective students Apply for scholarships early. Google is your best friend; use it to search for grants in your state first, and once you've got all the grants you can find/are eligible for, go crazy looking for scholarships. There are literally departments of faculty whose job is solely to offer help to students, whether it be tutoring or advising or other forms of assistance, and they WANT you to use them, so take advantage of them.
Academic Rigor I'm sorry, but as I've already stated, I haven't actually attended. I've been accepted and have most of my paperwork filled out, but as to the standards of the classes, I can offer no information. My impression of the school is that standards are challenging, but rewarding.
Dorm Life I will not be staying in a dorm; I've already completed two years at a local community college and have an Associate's degree under my belt. I'll be staying in a nearby apartment complex. From what I've seen of the dorms, they don't look to be anything special or worth mentioning (if you've been to other larger universities and seen their dorms, there's not much difference).
Food and Dining I've eaten at their cafe once, and the food was excellent. Most likely I'll eat there from time to time when I'm there, but unless I can get enough ship money to afford a meal plan, I'll probably be cooking for myself for the most part.
What to do for fun ... work out? I don't know how to really answer this, it's subjective. For me, I'm looking forward to peace and quiet so I can write, plus the exercise facilities so I can get back in shape, and maybe finding some form of martial arts club so I can learn a little self defense. I also like to play a lot of video games, so I can imagine on a campus this big there's bound to be plenty of opportunities for multiplayer awesomeness.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I did notice there's a church on campus, but I didn't have a chance to go in. It seems to be non-denominational. Forgive me if I'm being presumptuous, but that seems like it would cause some clashing-- and of course, with all those differing belief systems under the same roof, any sermons delivered would have to be made applicable to all of those present, implying a sugar-coated message meant to tickle the ears, not speak to the heart.
Great for these types of students Any, I suppose. I aim to be a versatile person, both at the keyboard and in real life, so a campus that is equally versatile seems perfect for me.
Clubs and Activities Too many to list! Hundreds!
Greek Life They exist on campus and I want no part of them. The only way I would join a fraternity would be if by joining, the rest of my fees would be paid entirely.
Campus Safety I cannot attest to this; I've been on campus a grand total of three times (I live about 80 miles away and gas isn't cheap). I have seen security vehicles cruising around, though. I did notice once when I was there for orientation, members of the police academy walking down the hall in a group, but for all I know they could have just been leaving a class session.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Grand Valley is an amazing university. It is full of opportunity in education and extra curricular activities. If you allow them to, your experiences at GVSU could change your life.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to learn. Grand Valley is a liberal arts college so you will get to experience all different kinds of courses. This can be very helpful in finding a major, even if you think you already have your mind set on one. The faculty and staff are really friendly and always willing to help but make sure you make a connection with your professors and at least introduce yourself in order to do your best in the classes.
Academic Rigor The course load in the classes is usually a lot but worth it because you leave the class truly understanding the material.
Dorm Life The dorms aren't bad but they are kind of small so be ready to down size on the stuff you putin your room.
Food and Dining The food is decent, some days are better than others.
What to do for fun There are countless student organizations on campus and there is always something going on. The best time to figure out which one you want to be involved in is during Campus Life Night. This is when almost all of the student organizations set up tables in the field house and give you information about themselves. It is a lot of fun and they give out free stuff! :)
Bang for the buck Grand Valley's tuition is very reasonable for the quality of education that you are receiving!
Great for these types of students GVSU is great for all types of students! It has a mixture of everyone, including a lot of international students.
Clubs and Activities There are so many to choose from and all of the ones that I have participated in have been great! They were very well organized and regulated and a lot of fun.
Greek Life I haven't gone Greek but my older sister that goes here did and she loved it. She said it was an amazing experience.
Campus Safety This campus is super safe and has a wonderful safety record which you can view by going on the Grand Valley website. It is just a great overall atmosphere.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Grand Valley is very balanced. The party atmosphere is just right (maybe a little on the lower end). The number of students isn't too overwhelming, but it still feels big. Also, the campus is great - you can get anywhere in ten minutes by walking.
Tips for prospective students This school is especially good if you are undecided on your major - lots of possibilities at a low cost. Also, there is a noticeable difference of boy to girl ratio - girls being more populous.
Academic Rigor I am an Honors College student, so the required classes I took were significantly harder, but not too unreasonable. The Honors college is really a great place to learn beyond what is required if you have the motivation.
Dorm Life The Honors dorms are the nicest on campus, but the hallways are pretty quiet. The people are very nice, but you make friends through classes and groups you join - not the people on your floor. I lived off campus second semester and enjoyed my time much more - It was much more vibrant.
Food and Dining There are enough dining places located at logical points throughout campus. The food is pretty similar at each joint. The quality varies, but is generally okay. There is a reasonable variety as well. Though, after my first semester I got tired of the food, so second semester I bought food from Meijer and cooked in my dorm.
What to do for fun You are kind of in the middle of a corn field, so for fun things you should take a 25 minute bus ride into Grand Rapids. Once there, you can go clubbing at the B.O.B, eat at a variety of good restaurants, and/or go to museums and art galleries.
Bang for the buck Grand Valley offers a fairly wide variety of classes, and the education you receive is definitely more than what you pay.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus None that I am aware of.
Great for these types of students 1) Students who want a big university but the ability to make it small. 2) Students who want medium size class sizes. 3) Students who want enough of a party life, but not too much to distract from school. 4) Students who love snow!
Clubs and Activities There are lots and lots of opportunities for one to get involved. If you don't see a club you want there is always the option to create a new one yourself. Funding for clubs is relatively abundant.
Greek Life There is a pretty significant greek life on campus, but it is concentrated in one part of campus. If it is your thing there is a big variety, but if it isn't it is not hard to ignore it.
Campus Safety There are always GV cop cars out ensuring the student's safety. I never once felt in danger. There is also a hotline you can call if you need help with anything at anytime.

Academic Rigor Classes are challenging. However their are many on campus help services that are free. Professors are always willing to help students
Dorm Life Their is a wide variety of dorm types. Traditional where it is small but friends are made easily. suite where things are a little quieter. Also newer buildings that feel like hotels
Food and Dining There are so many options to choose from everyday. plenty of places to eat so no matter where your class is you are close to dining. and their are plenty of stop and go shops for when your on the run.

Tips for prospective students Apply and GO! There's great things in store for you and Grand Valley will get you there. They're so affordable, too! I don't understand why any one wouldn't want to go.
Academic Rigor Grand Valley is a well-known school with high academic rigor. I'm proud to say that I'm getting my education from Grand Valley State University.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Grand Valley State University is THE place to be for a well rounded college experience which not only offers top quality professors and excellence in education, but offers a variety of campus living experiences! GVSU encourages communication between students and professors; and promotes success through scholarships to students who work with their counselors to successfully work through their degree goals in four years. At Grand Valley students feel supported and inspired!
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus, get to know your professors and counselor - and definitely explore all that the Grand Rapids area has to offer. Grand Rapids and west Michigan is an area full of resources, history, nature and museums.
Academic Rigor I work at an Assisted Living Facility 16-24 hours a week. I am involved in a mentoring program (off campus) and still manage to excel in my studies and enjoy dorm life. Some people say their are three main aspects to campus life; studies, sleep and your job...but only enough time for two! I find that is not the case; most of the time ;)
Dorm Life Grand Valley offers the BEST in dorm living. My roommate and I share an apartment style dorm room which provides our own private bathroom and kitchen! Love, LOVE IT!!! Our Resident Advisor, Carly, is available and helpful...and has become a fantastic friend while leading our hall in character!
Food and Dining No corn been and mush served here!!! Grand Valley offers a variety of dining options. The campus also offers organic dining...healthy all the way!!!
What to do for fun Head west for a twenty minute driving will take you to the beaches of Lake Michigan. Head east, 15 minutes, to downtown Grand Rapids and you can take in ice skating, swing dancing, shops, fabulous restaurants, the river walk and so much more!!!
Bang for the buck I know that when I leave the campus of Grand Valley, I will be leaving with a first class education complete with well-rounded experience AND a life time of friends and memories!
Great for these types of students Grand Valley works for the dependent, first time away from home student as well as the independent, I don't need my hand held type of students. YOU make the experience - Grand Valley staff, professors and campus employees are their to assist you in your experience! That's what I LOVE about Grand Valley!
Clubs and Activities Grand Valley offers a tremendous amount of opportunities to get involved from sports, interest related groups to a variety of on campus religious clubs. If you do NOT get involved in some type of club, it's because you've locked yourself in your dorm room!
Campus Safety I have never, not for one minute, felt unsafe at GVSU. During both the Christmas break and Spring break, I chose to stay on campus and work at a local Assisted Living Facility. I was the ONLY person in my ENTIRE dorm room for four full days. Not one time did I feel nervous or anxious. I also work the afternoon shift and several nights a week drive back to campus after 11pm. I have never felt frightened or fearful in the parking lot or walking to my dorm late at night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The students here thrive. We know what we came to do, and Grand Valley helps us accomplish our goals. Walking through this campus everyday allows me to experience a great future in the making.
Tips for prospective students Motivation. If there is no motivation, you will slowly dwindle into the back of the crowd. Some wise words are, If you snooze, you lose. If you wait to the last minute to get things done, there's no chance you'll have the best outcome.
Academic Rigor To be completely honest, here at Grand Valley there is nothing but strict discipline to get work done. Of course, there are the occasional distractions. However, GV is a built campus for learning. You come here to learn, and you get out, creating a family as you leave.
Dorm Life If you're a freshman and attend Grand Valley State University you know dorm life (especially in traditional living-which is a set up of two lofted beds, wardrobes, and a desk for you to work at) can be complicated. Majority of freshmen live in the traditional living styles, and for young women, they can be a hassle because of sharing bathrooms. However, you become so close to the people on your floor that they have evolved into a family away from home. I love all of the friends that I've met. And despite the minor problems of bathroom usage, we've become sisters.
Food and Dining Freshmen meet at Kleiner. Upperclassmen meet at Connection. And we all just happen to meet in the middle, at Fresh. Dining at Grand Valley is an experience in itself. Of course, when you first arrive your eyes bug out of its' sockets in total excitement that you get to basically eat fast food for the entire year! That is why places like Kleiner start to get old. Connection is a great place to eat, the meals are a surprise, and you're hardly ever disappointed. And lastly, you have Fresh, which us Grand Valley students call a gamble. It's risky when you go there and you're either severely disappointed, or undeniably satisfied.
What to do for fun You are always busy at Grand Valley. Many would disagree, but they'd be mostly party people, or they don't join clubs here. What I love about Grand Valley is that there is always an event to go to. With free food! Yes, free food, and everyone knows college students love free food, especially when they're trying to get away from places like Kleiner. We have events ranging from a Dinner and Dance to Fashion Shows. It is always a wonderful time, and everyone enjoys themselves.
Bang for the buck It's an experience you really do not want to miss out on. And the first year is the most important, it'll either make or break the rest of your college life.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Grand Valley is a really cool school! Homeschooled all my life, I arrived here and felt instantly accepted and comfortable. The Christian groups on campus are wonderfully diverse and all very welcoming. Nice profs, good learning, beautiful campus, lots to do, great food, and nice dorms! This is definitely a 5-star school!
Academic Rigor Great profs and good classes. Quite liberal, though.
Dorm Life Very fun dorm life, nice dorms, people are nice. Watch out for vandals in freshman dorms, though. If someone doesn't come forward, everyone will have to be billed.
Food and Dining Meal plans and Debit dollars are two different things. (Speaking from experience here.) A HUGE variety of restaurants, most of which accept Meal plans. My personal favorites are the Chinese food, Papa John's Pizza, and Fresh Food Co.
What to do for fun Oh, lots. Make friends, head to the GV Library, (There's more than you might expect) head downtown on the Rapids, hit up the gym or athletic facilities, chill with friends in the dorm lobbies or restaurant lounges, go to the Main Street Pub nearby, ($3 Late-night Burger. HUGE thing with lots of fries! Let's just say that they know how to feed college students for cheap.) Lots more. If you're into parties, they are a bit difficult to find, as in you usually have to know someone.
Great for these types of students Great for people who want to learn, but can have a lot of fun doing it!
Clubs and Activities Clubs for almost anything. There are also, like, 10 Christian groups on campus for any tradition.
Greek Life No clue! :)
Campus Safety Awesome! These cops are serious about their job. I feel very safe!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences GVSU has a beautiful campus and is really a wonderful school. I have yet to have a teacher who was not very nice and helpful. It's also nice to have a bus to ride for free to almost anywhere you need to go, so, a car is not needed.
Tips for prospective students You shouldn't procrastinate, because the semester really does go by extremely quickly, and before you know it it's time for finals! If you are planning on living close to campus, I would recommend one of the off campus apartment complexes. You can still use financial aid, but it's much less expensive than almost all of the on campus living options.
Academic Rigor I found the classes to be very simple for the most part because almost all of the ones I've taken have been repeats of classes I took in High School. However, that is what makes them difficult. You think you don't need to study as much or pay as much attention in class and then you don't do as well as you can. If you try hard and go to class, it's very easy.
Dorm Life I have never lived on campus because it is much more expensive, however my friends living on campus seem to love it. You get to know everybody in your dorm and you're close to all of the campus dining areas and class buildings.
Food and Dining There is AMAZING food on campus. With so many options it's hard to pass up a meal on campus. Some options are Subway, burritos, sushi, salads, mac and cheese, Papa John's, and many more. If you plan on eating on campus a lot I would recommend getting a meal plan. Some of the dorm options come with them.
What to do for fun GVSU has many activities throughout the year. They start off with the icebreaker. It's like a dance to get people out and meeting everyone. They have sand volleyball courts on campus and an awesome gym that's free to students. There is also rock climbing, a wrestling room, a pool, basketball courts and a few fields for soccer and football.
Bang for the buck This is one of the cheapest Universities in Michigan, the tuition right now is under $10,000. I know it's a lot, but it's better than that much per semester for another Michigan University. Make sure to fill your credit hours to 15 a semester so you get the cheapest credits possible.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It's not really unusual, but there is the Arborenum, which is a small park with paths on campus. It's absolutely beautiful and relaxing.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who love to do things and not just sit at home. Also, you have to be willing to work in your classes, or else no matter how easy they seem, you will not do well.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of options for sports as well. There's football, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, cheerleading, etc.
Greek Life Many sororities and fraternities are available to students and they all have a recruiting function at the beginning of the year. I think last time they had an ice cream social.
Campus Safety There are campus police all over the place, however you rarely see them doing anything other than driving around looking for speeding cars or giving parking tickets. Campus is very safe.

The quality of education, curriculum and staff is far superior to anything I have ever experienced. Also, students and faculty, are all part of a safe, caring community.

Academic Rigor I am Currently in Grand Valley State University's Elementary Education Integrated Science Program. This program is awsome and provides the perfect amount of challenges and learning experiences to make students ready for the classroom.
Dorm Life Dorm Life is fantastic. The first few weeks of open door policy provide a fantastic way to meet new people.
Food and Dining Campus food is GREAT, and not to mention affordable. There are many places to eat and snack on campus. and they all provide top quality products.
What to do for fun There is always something fun to do on campus, whether it is participating in the plethora of activities indoors and out, or just hanging with friends. They even have a movie theater that plays a new, and free, movie every week.

Tips for prospective students Live on campus if you can afford it as it is much easier to make it to class on time. Dont be afraid to use the bus system for savings on gas. Rent your books from the bookstore to save as much money as possible.
Academic Rigor The classes can be challenging but you will learn more than you think.
Dorm Life The dorm life is a perfect experience for any new individual living on their own for the first time. Grand Valley does an amazing job at pairing like minded individuals together for living.
Food and Dining There are many restaurants on campus and off for any type of cuisine you would like for the day.
What to do for fun Grand Valley is full of intramurals and other activities to keep you busy. There is also a completely remodeled sports and physical fitness center.
Bang for the buck It does feel that the amount per credit is ridiculous but in the end there is a 93% of recieving a job in your field upon graduation so I feel it is well worth it.
Great for these types of students Grand Valley has one of the highest rated Criminal Justice programs in the nation and one of the strongest running and most accredited police academies in the US.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The beautiful campus and challenging coursework is what makes Grand Valley the only place I would ever want to receive my education. I've met so many people here though the campus events that I have no clue how I would have had such a good time had I chosen to go anywhere else. The wide arrange of support networks like the counseling center and different tutoring services made my academic life much easier than it would have been had the services not been offered.
Tips for prospective students If you can, tyr to live on campus. There are so many more people that you have the chance to meet and a huge amount of housing sponsored activities that will help get you involved in the Grand Valley and Grand Rapids Community. Also, make sure to focus on school and not just your social life, it's tempting to put off work, but it's worth it to get things done. Not doing so will make things much more difficult than they need to be. Find a healthy balance.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging and work has to be put int in order to do well. The professors are there to help and are always willing to share their knowledge with students and give you one-on-one time if you need it. Readings need to be done to understand complex material and large amounts of studying need to be done for a clear understanding of the material. Since there are so many different areas of study, it's not difficult to find courses that you enjoy though.
Dorm Life There are so many different places to live, with different feels to each of them makes choosing a dorm hard, but worth it when you put in enough thought. The Resident assistants are trained for ANYTHING. any issue you have, you can go to them to get advice or have them help you through something specific. There are also a lot of different events put on by housing that are fun to attend and get to know people. There are even community service activities that you can become a part of though dorms that you can put on an application or resume.
Food and Dining You have to know where to go to get food that is nutritious and not the same every day. There is a good selection, but since some of the places change their menus every day and don't always commit to the ones they post online, it can be a gamble.
What to do for fun Go downtown! The bus will get you to the downtown campus in about 30 minutes and with your Student ID you can take any other Grand Rapids bus for free. There are some great clubs and coffee shops in the city with live music. If you don't feel like going off campus, there are usually a lot of things that go on closer by. There's even a small movie theater on campus that's free for students which is great to take advantage of.
Campus Safety I've waked around campus late at night multiple times and never felt unsafe. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful though. Take proper precaution, but there's enough good people and police on campus where you shouldn't be worried.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences great schoo, professors care about you and you can tell, unlike other big schools in mi. even though its d2 there is still 25 thousand students and there is always something to do.
Tips for prospective students study on campus. all the a students already know that you get the most work done when you are around other students who get their work done.
Academic Rigor i use rate my professor to find the right professor that is right for me. but its hard to find a bad one here.
Dorm Life very involved. dorms have about 6 competitions a school year between the other dorms and it is fun to say the least. all of the freshman live on campus their first year, plain and simple. 4 to 1 girl guy ratio. doesn't get much better.
Food and Dining about 5 good places to eat. its my second year here and its getting a little old. something gvsu should work on
What to do for fun partying takes place off campus because the school is strict on campus. but that doesn't mean we don't know how to have good time. lots of intramural sports that are easy to sign up for and so man clubs you won't believe.
Bang for the buck with the city of grand rapids being 15 minutes away they are always hiring. its easy to get a job right out of college here not to mention gvsu is in the top 10 universities in michigan.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus gvsu and svsu are big rivals along with ferris, whenever they play each other in sports things get a little crazy.
Great for these types of students hard working, involved. i can't see someone not liking it here, unless they don't like people.
Clubs and Activities to many to name. you think it they have it. even a quidditch club.
Greek Life is a bit low, about 6%. but it grows every year.
Campus Safety like i said gvsu is strict on campus and you can tell by how much security is around. the good thing about it is that gvsu is easily the cleanest campus in mi. bar none.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the environment at grand valley is very welcoming and friendly. the professors and staff are excellent and willing to go out of their way to help students succeed. gvsu's free bus transit system will take students downtown to their other campus and is one of the most valuable resources they have.
Tips for prospective students learn how to ride the bus and utilize it - you don't need a vehicle freshman year and it saves so much gas money. keep your door open and talk to people if you live in the dorms. if you're a transfer or nontraditional student, sit by people you'd like to befriend in class. people usually sit in the same seat all semester, so pick you seat on the first day of class carefully. it is worth the effort to meet your professor during their office hours - remember this when it comes time for letters of recommendation from faculty for study abroad, scholarships, or job opportunities. they need to remember you.
Academic Rigor they expect a lot at the collegiate level, but if you work hard it is attainable.
Dorm Life as long as you get involved with people on your floor and check out extracurricular clubs you'll love it. greek life is very big at gvsu.
Food and Dining they have multiple dining facilities including fresh food company, where there are buffet style fresh food and all types of cuisine. in addition is an eistein bagel company, papa john's pizza, c-store for snacks, kleiner food, starbucks, and aramark food company.
What to do for fun hike the valley trails behind the dorms - barely anyone knows they exist. it's like another world down there.
Bang for the buck i am completely satisfied with my university experience here. i studied abroad, a short five week program to costa rica. i would highly recommend study abroad if at all possible. you won't be disappointed, wherever you choose to study.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a giant swinging metal ball that the engineering students built right behind the padnos science building. you have to ride it - tradition! also, do not walk under the transitional link (blue structure on lakes plaza) the wrong way - going towards the little mac bridge. it is bad luck for your academics, if you believe campus supersititions.
Great for these types of students hardworking, independent, like to have fun.
Clubs and Activities i believe there are over 150 registered student clubs and organizations. i was involved with three. it's a great way to meet people.
Greek Life there are an abundance of sororities and fraternities.
Campus Safety i have never had a problem with security at either the main campus in allendale or the downtown campus in grand rapids. campus security comes quickly if they are needed. they are great.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences majority ph.d. professors who interact with you in a small class setting and are very knowledgeable about their work. nice and quite with very minimal/nothing around to distract a student from focusing on his/her studies. at the end of the experience your resume will be very competitive.
Tips for prospective students this is the school for you if you want to focus on your studies and not a lot of parties. if you utilize all opportunities grand valley state university gives you, you will have a very competitive resume, and employers will contact you before graduation.
Academic Rigor in the sciences specifically chemistry the work is very doable. there is research, experiments, and discussions that allow a deep understanding of the materials.
Dorm Life very much packed together freshman year. not a comfortable situation. suggest you stick it through freshman year and get an apartment the next year.
Food and Dining al lot of variety on campus. this will not be an issue at all. also, if you have a car the options are endless.
What to do for fun go to different universities and party. go up to the lakes and spend some weekends, but you would have to know people in the area. i usually go with my girlfriend and her family.
Bang for the buck i am an african american student of the sciences. i will be graduating may 2013 with an analytical chemistry bachelors in science and certification in green chemistry. this experience is a promising one for science students who want some of the best teachers who are involved with you on a one to one type of setting. you have no other option but to excel academically, in research, and planing on post graduation. hang in there and you will not graduate and be unemployed.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus a new library is being built. amazing state of the art, and i have never seen anything like it.
Great for these types of students science students you will excel in academics and research. they make you interested in the material.
Clubs and Activities african student council

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences due to its closed campus layout and can do attitude from staff and students alike, grand valley state university gives resonates with an energizing feel of a small community with big dreams. having just celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, which is still fairly young for a university, gvsu is still looking to grow and improve itself; in this way, each student attending grand valley and the university itself are growing each year. this being said, grand valley is an inspiring atmosphere to be a part of and i would recommend it to anyone who is considering taking the next step in furthering their education.
Tips for prospective students upon looking more at colleges, whether you choose gv or not, be sure to take a tour prior to deciding. tuition is not a small hunk of change so you want to make sure the school fits you. another point to consider is, if you are eligible to join the honors program, regardless of if you plan to be in it for the long hall or not it is a good way to knock out a much more significant portion of gen eds than taking one class for each requirement. this will in turn save you money and most importantly time.
Academic Rigor although gvsu is a smaller university it will not hesitate to challenge you. with some of the best, most modern professors in their fields, if you're looking for a good, well rounded education, a challenge, and some stiff competition you'll find it here. this is not to say that gvsu is to be compared with ivy league schools, but more so to say, it will challenge you as much as you want to be challenged.
Dorm Life freshman dorms are the best part about college at many universities. grand valley does a good job of orientating students and encouraging them to get out of their dorm and mingle. if you are looking for a social life i suggest the traditional dorms. if you would still prefer that same community feel except with your own bathroom, suite style dorms are the way to go. apartment style and honors housing are very similar in the way that they tend to be more quite and fewer people leave their doors open to the hall. however, if you find yourself wanting a little more privacy, or perhaps is the case with honors housing, want to surround yourself with like students, these are the living facilities for you. honors students be warned though, because honors housing is on the opposite end of the campus from where the rest of the freshman housing is located you may feel removed from the rest of your graduating class.
Food and Dining campus food is by no means gourmet, but even for the pickiest of people there is always something for everyone. there are plenty of options unlike most other universities. only one of the on campus dining halls, fuel, is a buffet style eatery. the rest make the food right in front of you. the connection is arguably the best though. they use food grown locally in support of michigan and the greater grand rapids area and their meals are always hot and fresh.
What to do for fun gvsu is by no means a campus that you should come to expecting the party your term away. being notorious for enforcing its dry campus beliefs you will be severally disappointed if that was how you imagined spending your first year at college. that said, being only a short bus ride from the city, there is always something going on locally. for example: art prize, skating in rosa park, inter-mural sports, clubs, movies playing in kurkoff... the list goes on and on.
Bang for the buck since i have been here all of my classes have been fairly challenging. i have only had class cancelled once which seems to be a recent trend at other universities. this term for example every single one of my professors have a doctoral degree. you get the large university professors, with medium size classes, at a mid-range price.
Great for these types of students students who are serious about their education and taking the next step into adulthood.
Clubs and Activities there is nearly an exponential number of clubs and activities on campus, and with stuey, gv's online club connection site it makes becoming part of a club or searching for a new club to join very easy. as far as my personal experience with clubs on campus go, everyone has always been very inviting and enthusiastic to have new people and i have never felt unwelcome or not included.
Campus Safety our campus is rated as the third safest campus in the us, and it really stands up to that statistic. campus police are kind of a figure around gv and can be seen basically anywhere at any time. although i would not recommend going for a jog at one in the morning, pathways are well lit and because gv is a closed campus i have never noticed anyone who has looked out of place nor have i ever felt uncomfortable.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I have not once second-guessed myself on choosing Grand Valley. It is not only a beautiful school in a great location, but has so much to offer as far as major programs, class variety, and amazing professors go. I love this school.
Tips for prospective students Whether you like a small-town feel or the big-city setting, you can get both at Grand Valley. Having locations in both Allendale, a smaller town, and in Grand Rapids, a larger city (with only about a 20-minute distance between), you're sure to feel at home here.
Academic Rigor While every college obviously has some classes that are easier than other, the majority of Grand Valley's classes are very involved and worthwhile. I've learned to much since I've been here and truly feel I am being well-prepared for the working world ahead.
Dorm Life The dorm life at GVSU is great when it's your first year attending a university, helping you to become familiar with the campus and meet new friends so you feel like you belong.
Food and Dining Although I am an extremely picky eater, I'm always able to find something on campus that suits my likes and needs. You have a great variety of choices and options.
What to do for fun If you are a sports fan, the football games in the fall are insane. They are a great way to support your school's team and to just have fun! There are also numerous events on campus to attend as well as organizations to join. If you ever want a break from campus, the city is within driving distance for a total change of scenery! There's a lot to do in this area.
Bang for the buck For the moderate price you pay, this is an excellent school. You definitely get what you pay for and more.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are many unique locations on campus, such as the Lil Mac Bridge, which is very high and overlooks a creek below. There are also many statues throughout campus that have superstitious themes attached to them.
Great for these types of students Any student would find their place with ease here.
Clubs and Activities There are an extensive amount of clubs and organizations that students can join for minimal costs, which can be learned more about at the Student Life Night events, where all student organizations come together to promote themselves - there is also free stuff, so it's a great event!
Greek Life I absolutely love my sorority, and that's what everyone else in the Greek community at Grand Valley will say when you ask them. With a vast variety of events, including both social and philanthropic, there's no better way to meet new people and get involved on campus than to join a Greek organization.
Campus Safety There hasn't been a single time that I've felt unsafe at GVSU. It's well-lit at night, and there are always cops patrolling the streets and campus to ensure maximum safety and security.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I enjoyed 2 of 4 of my classes. One I didn't enjoy I ended up failing, because I couldn't concentrate on the boring material. The instructor didn't make the Plant Biology class interesting.
Am enjoying being here I definitely enjoy being here, even though my roommates are bad. The campus is great, the staff friendly and informative, and the opportunities for anything are limitless.
Bang for the buck Money is always an issue for college students, but I don't like how GVSU returns the financial aid refunds 2 weeks into the semesters. It forces the students to use their bookstore instead of shopping somewhere that the books are a fair price. I bought a required book used online for $5 when other students were forced to buy it in the University Book Store for $60. That's not fair at all.
Tips for prospective students Keep your chin up even if things don't turn out how you imagine they will. Roll with the punches and make the best out of it all, and soon you will be loving the campus and school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot It depends on the class. Sometimes what exactly I am supposed to be learning is a bit fuzzy, and sometimes the classes are a little too simple.
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful, but I don't feel as though I fit in. Maybe the idea of the whole 'college experience' just doesn't fit my personality. The professors and the other students are usually very nice, though.
Bang for the buck It seems so expensive, but it isn't as bad as some of the other schools I was considering. Grand Valley also offers a good number of merit scholarships, and they definitely ease the burden.
Tips for prospective students If you can, try to get into the Honors College. The classes are usually interesting, focus on writing and discussion, and seem preferable to the usual required core courses and 'themes'. The can be a lot of work, though.
Great for these types of students Those who think being green is important. Grand Valley seems to be rather into that sort of thing. It also seems like a liberal kind of school.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot GVSU's music education program continues to develop and I'm really loooking forward to being a part of it.
Will enjoy being here I also have several friends who attend GVSU so I'm not going to be too lonely :) I also enjoy the campus.
Bang for the buck Great school for the price... I believe it will really be worth it!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot GVSU wasn't ranked one of the best in the Midwest for no reason. An excellent school for liberal arts. You can pretty much major in anything, and there is a high retention rate for jobs and internships after graduation, great diversity and culture, and caring professors. It is a great experience, definitely many things to get involved with.
Am enjoying being here The people here are nice, and as I said, the diversity is great. You will find many people with similar interests, as well as getting to know others that are different.
Bang for the buck Quite affordable for a university with a lot of programs.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. Seriously, it would be a waste of time if you only went to get a piece of paper with your degree. The connections you make will benefit you.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Grand Valley has a lot of great programs, and the professors generally hold knowledge over every aspect of a major.
Will enjoy being here From the students and admissions counselors I've talked to, everyone seems to be really friendly. It's a small town school with large school opportunities.
Bang for the buck The tuition for this school is incredible. Most universities in the state hold tuition rates over twice that of Grand Valley.
Tips for prospective students When applying, include anything you think may be even remotely relevant to what the application is asking for. Anything you have done since you started high school as far as extracurriculars or activities feel free to include. You never know what will be the thing that gets you accepted or gives you scholarships.
Great for these types of students Grand Valley is great for someone who wants the big university feel in the size of a small town. Many groups and student run activities exist on campus so it's great for people who have hobbies they are passionate about and would like to continue doing.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The courses are informative, and although I have nothing to compare it to, but my community college that I was dual-enrolled in, I'd say that you shouldn't expect much more. The professors I've had are helpful and friendly.
Am enjoying being here The weeks are bearable. There's a group no matter what you're interested in as long as you're the type of rank-and-file student you'd expect in west Michigan. Honestly though, no one here is okay with going outside their comfort zone and trying new things. It's positively dreadful on the weekends too.
Bang for the buck I think I'll have to get out to fully explore this.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. Because people certainly aren't the most open or inviting here, you really have to wedge yourself into a niche. They are, however, fanatically devoted to the school as you see in other reviews. I can't figure out why.
Great for these types of students It's good if you really want to buckle down and get your learn on. If you like to have fun or explore or try something new, I wouldn't suggest it. Especially, if you're in Michigan.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Grand Valley has an education program that is different from many schools which makes them unique. For University Requirements to graduate, you must take a certain amount of classes in their General Education. This may seem like a lot of requirements GV is having you do, but the classes honestly pay off. It allows you to experience different classes that aren't in your comfort zone but you end up learning a lot. You can take a break from all the requirements from your major and take a fun, interesting class that you pick. I went in picking a random art class thinking it wasn't going to be fun. I ended up finding that I really enjoy art and it's now one of my outlets if I am stressed.
Am enjoying being here I love it here! The Grand Rapids area is so nice and great for a college student. There is so much to do here if you get out and look around. Grand Rapids offers that big city feeling without all the issues of a big city. The campus is very clean and the people are great. The professors truly care about you and make themselves available to help.
Bang for the buck The cost of Grand Valley is pretty reasonable based on what you get for it. Many free benefits offered to Grand Valley students are football tickets, a great bus system that connects the Allendale campus, Grand Rapids campus, and off-campus apartments, and work out advice from personal trainers. There is a state of the art gym featuring many new equipment this year that is free for students. Students also have a vast assortment of clubs to choose from at their disposal. Do you enjoy to dance? There's a club. Are you looking to help continually improve GV and join the Student Council? You can.
Tips for prospective students There is so much you can immerse yourself in, you just have to do it. Grand Valley is as good as you want to make it. If you want to come to school, get involved, and meet new people...Grand Valley is great for you. It may seem intimidating at how much there is and feel like you have to do everything. Take the time to think about what you want, and then make your next move. Don't be afraid to talk to your classmates. Don't think that just because they seem well put together, they are in the same boat and just as nervous as you are. And don't try to rush your time at school. Take the time to appreciate all the good things you have going for you and learn from the bad experiences. Good luck!
Great for these types of students Grand Valley is great for you if you enjoy your academics, like being active, and have a positive attitude.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students As with anything, shop around and make sure they have the type of program and setting you are looking for. The professors are generally very friendly, and the main campus has a nice mix of settings for studying and relaxing.
Great for these types of students Non traditional students have plenty of options for areas of study and class schedules. The education program here is top notch, and the staff is very helpful, they will work with you and help you succeed in the program.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have found my classes to be very interesting and stimulating. I have taken a wide range of classes already, ranging from psychology 101 to the history of Ancient Greece and Rome to perspectives in education. All of my classes have been very enjoyable, informative, applicable, and well-structured.
Am enjoying being here Grand Valley campus and the people here are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The campus has a very warm feel to it and is comfortable and safe. Campus is spacious and well kept. It is small enough that one can get from one side of campus to the other in about 20 minutes on foot, but large enough that one doesn't feel crowded or cramped. I also really enjoyed my freshman year in the dorms. I went in blind and roomed with three other girls, all of whom I am friends with now and continue to live with. Aside from academic life, the social atmosphere is very active and caring. There are plenty of social and sporting events going on each week. Clubs and intramural sports are also very popular at GV.
Bang for the buck Even though I have already noticed a raise in tuition prices from last year to this coming school year, when compared to other public universities that many of my friends attend, I feel that I am really getting more for my money than they are. I have an on-campus student job in University Development at Grand Valley and I know that when compared to other public universities in Michigan, Grand Valley's tuition is still below the state average and is also the lowest publicly funded school per student in the state. With this in mind, it is astonishing then that Grand Valley is now an up and coming public school and rivaling Michigan State University for second place behind the University of Michigan.
Tips for prospective students Grand Valley is located in Allendale, which is VERY small. Even though the city (Grand Rapids) is just a bus ride away, students that come here should know how to create their own fun!
Campus is small compared to other public univeristies, but I strongly recommend wandering around and exploring because there are constantly fun and interesting things going on at GVSU that half of the students don't know about.
Join clubs. We have clubs for almost anything you could hope for! Quidditch, swing dancing, Spanish, yoga...
GVSU is not really a party school, and while plenty of people love to have fun, don't expect to come here and party every night.Great for these types of students While I am thoroughly enjoying my time at Grand Valley, I realize that it is not for everyone. Grand Valley is great for students who are sincere in their pursuit of an education, have open mind's and opinions, and want to become actively involved in the community here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot GVSU gives students an opportunity to try take classes from a variety of of different areas of study. Once you choose your major there are classes that focus on the specific area of study that you want to pursue with knowledgeable professors and great meetings and seminars.
Am enjoying being here I have enjoyed the classes, professors, and environment.
Bang for the buck Professors are knowledgeable, classes are the right size for one-on-one attention, and the environment is great for learning.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in as many programs as you can and get to know your professors. Professors are a great resource and help you obtain career goals.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are mostly medium sized so the professors have time to answer individual questions and are always willing to do so if asked.
Am enjoying being here There are always many things going on around campus for all different sorts of students. Just look at the boards in all the different buildings or go online and you can find something that will interest you.
Bang for the buck College is expensive...there is no way around it. However, Grand Valley does a great job of ensuring you get the most out of each dollar you put in.
Tips for prospective students The Allendale campus is pretty big so unless you want to run across campus make sure you check a map and see where your classes are located before registering.
Great for these types of students Students who want to do well will do well at Grand Valley.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My professors are very helpful and personable. Almost every single one of my professors knows me on a first name basis. Great Learning atmosphere, and there is always help available for whatever class you are taking.
Am enjoying being here I really enjoy the campus life. GVSU is just the right size to have smaller classes yet a lot of clubs you can join.
Bang for the buck Probably won't find a much better deal on tuition. After all, GVSU requires the second highest academic standards to attend out of the public universities in Michigan (following Univeristy of Michigan).
Tips for prospective students Try to get decent ACT scores because a lot of the scholarships depend on high ACT scores.
Great for these types of students Great for Students looking at mid-size schools. GVSU is on the bigger side, but it never feels like that. Campus is fairly small, but never crowded, just like the classes.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classroom setting at GV is very intimate. It's like being in high school still. The class sizes are small and the professors are very helpful. The professors are willing to help anyone with questions and they are very intelligent and good at what they do.
Am enjoying being here I have met a lot of people in and out of my major. There are a lot of clubs and groups so there are many places to find people who share similar interests.
Bang for the buck I think that I am getting a bang for my buck. I feel like my money goes a long way, especially with a meal plan. It may seem expensive when it comes time to pay, but compared to other schools with a similar level of education, GV is a bargain!
Tips for prospective students Pick something you love and then choose your school based on the level of that major. Don't choose a school just because your friends are going there. Everyone changes in college, even if just a little bit, so give yourself some room to change and branch out and meet new people.
Great for these types of students Grand Valley is the perfect place for students who like a more one-on-one atmosphere with professors. It is also the perfect place for students who would rather hang out with friends than go out to a million parties every night.

Am enjoying being here The campus is great and really easy to get around. Everyone is really nice and respectful. It is a really quiet campus, but there is a lot to do.
Bang for the buck The tuition is fair, it may seem like a lot but it is cheaper then most and the education you get is top rate.
Tips for prospective students Talk to an counselor as soon as you can, they can help you a lot when it comes to class sign up, financial aid questions, and housing questions.
Great for these types of students Students that want to get an education not students that are looking to party. There are a lot of fun things to do but this is not a party school by any means.

Am enjoying being here I absolutely love GRAND VALLEY! Its in a great location, just outside of Grand Rapids so if you want to go to the city its just a free bus ride away. I plan on staying here for grad school too!
Bang for the buck Much cheaper than any other in state AND out of state university I looked at!
Great for these types of students Great for any student! With over 200 clubs and organizations there really is something for everyone. As an incoming freshmen you are sure to find something to do, and the housing for freshmen promotes social activities!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors here are not grad students, they are here to help you, and teach you something. Many professors use hands on activities to help reach every student.
Am enjoying being here Living on campus is the best! I have met some of the most amazing people, just by living next door to them!
Bang for the buck Grand Valley is one of the cheaper colleges in Michigan, you learn a lot, and get to experience so much without paying extra.
Tips for prospective students For freshman year, you should live on campus. Its a lot of fun, and you get to meet many people who you will be friends with throughout your college career.
Great for these types of students Grand Valley is great for people who have no idea what they want to do, or have an interest in the arts such as dance, and photography.

Am enjoying being here There is tons to do and some kind of organization that fits everyone. People are very friendly and even without a car you can get places on the buses for free!
Bang for the buck Great value for a great education. Cheaper than a lot of other schools I had considered.
