Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Hampton University is an excellent school when it comes to academics.l The professors are very interested in their students. They provide office hours as well as email addresses in order for their students to contact them. All of my professors responded to my emails in a timely manner. I also recieved my test grades with in a 48 hr time frame. Al of my professors were welcoming and available for me to talk to if i had any concerns.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy the campus life. We call it our home by the sea. The xampus is very pretty. It is also filled with excitement and activities. For example, our student center containts a bowling alley, movie theatre, pool room, fitness room and a dance room. Every Friday there ie a 12:00 to 2:00. There is a dj and other activities during that time. There are sometimes concerts and comedy shows to attend. Trey Songs performed at Ogden Hall last year. Marlyn Wayans also came to campus to talk to us about the Obama election.
Tips for prospective students I recommend prospective students to visit the campus and tour the dorms.l Some dorms have air conditioning and some do not. It is good to try to get to know your dorm director in advance and to form a relationship with him or her. My dorm director was Ms. Wilkins and i think she is one of the best. Your dorm director will be one of the most helpful people during your freshman year as well as your RAs. Good luck with your quest for finding the right school. I am proud Pirate!
Great for these types of students Hampton University is a great school for people who need guidance and structure. During the first semester of your freshman year, you will have a curfew. There are some students that come to school to party and enjoy being away from home. Hampton provides the means to control those situations. The rules that Hampton has reminds the students of the reasons that their parents sent them off to school. I am thankful for that. I completed my freshman year with a 3.74.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot Class sizes as far as the number of students is concerned are small. Which leaves plenty of room for a more interactive classroom experience as well as giving the student an opportunity for a one-on-one relationship with their teachers/professors. Students are treated as more than just a number in the grade book, teachers take pride in their work and make you (the student) their number 1 priority.
Did enjoy being here Hampton's campus is beautiful! Everything from the buildings, landscapping, faculty and staff were just amazing. Living on campus for the first year reall allowed me to get the full college experience...Dorm life, events at the student center, and althetics just to name a few were all a once in a lifetime opportunity. Nothing else can compare to college life. Hampton is very strong on family and once you become a true Hamptonian you are family. The atmosphere that surrounds the entire campus is that of love, compassion, strength, and hope. Everyone there only wants the best for you and will do anything and everything to help you reach your goals.
Bang for the buck Although Hampton is an exensive school it is well worth it. The campus is to die for. Hampton is on the list of best HBCU's in the country....and that is no joke. The education you will receive is excellent. I believe that there shouldn't be a price on education because that's what is going to prepare and mold you for your future.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you schedule a campus tour and visit the dorms. Take time to do research on the school and it's history as well as the program for your desired major. Enter Hampton with an open mind and heart and be as active as possible.
Great for these types of students Hampton is for someone who wants to get that traditional HBCU experience. A person who is about their business and sees themselves going somewhere in the future. Set the bar high and only good things will come. You can do anything you put your mind to.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I love the rigorous curriculum of Hampton University. I am intellectually challenged in the classroom as well as outside. The teachers are very invested in their students' success. They are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that their students succeed.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being at Hampton very much. As an incoming freshman a new environment took a little getting use to, but I love my school. The campus is beautiful and there are many clubs, groups and activities to choose from. I am currently a member of both the University and Concert Choirs and enjoyed the experience last year. I anticipate that this year's experience will be just as if not more fulfilling than last year's.
Bang for the buck I believe that I am receiving a good education at Hampton University.
Tips for prospective students If you are considering or have been accepted to Hampton University, first, congratulations. Second, this school is for students that are dedicated to their studies. Yes, we have a good time, but grades definitely come first. Finally, if you are not from Virginia and you are not use to being away from home, this is not the school for you.
Great for these types of students Hampton University is good for all types of students. If you were a top the of your graduating class, your will excel at Hampton. If were not the at the top class, maybe you were just an average student, you still have the opportunity to excel at Hampton.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Hampton University is one of the black ivy league schools, so obviously they carry some of the top educational programs/degrees for your buck. Most students as well as professors take their education seriously and are striving to be at the top. Professors provide emails and office hours for student convince. There are a variety of tutoring programs such as math lab and foreign language lab for students needing assistance any a variety of subjects. Generally speaking, the majority of the professors seem to genuinely care about your education and want you to be as successful as possible and are willing to work with you.
Am enjoying being here Regardless of Hampton's downfalls, I am very happy I decided to come here. I have made some of my best and closest friends here, friends that I know I will keep for life. Hampton has some of the best and most helpful students. Most are extremely friendly and upperclassmen are always willing to help incoming freshman. It's literally like a big family, most students call each other brother or sister.
Bang for the buck Hampton University is one of the pricier schools and to be honest, you don't always get your monies worth. The on campus housing situation at Hampton is horrible. The dorms are very old and need updating. Half of the classrooms have chalkboards instead of whiteboards and most teachers bring their own chalk. You're paying a lot of money for a meal plan for a cafeteria that doesn't serve good food at all. It's not even buffet style like most colleges, you can't get as much as you want and the latest the cafeteria aka the caf is open is 7pm.
Tips for prospective students If you are a prospective student I recommend you visit the campus and take a campus tour. Visit the university's website as frequently as possible to see whats going on on campus as well as to get a feel of the school. The best option, I believe is to find Hampton students on online social networks and continue to ask questions about campus and academic life here on Hampton University. The best source of information is always current or past students. They're honest enough to give you the good and the bad. And when you arrive, remember you are here for school, don't get to caught up in the parties and social events. Have a good balance.
Great for these types of students Hampton University is good for all types of students. Generally everybody fits in. As long as you don't mind a few strict rules, especially freshman year, Hampton may be the University for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Hampton University is a prestigious institution whose mission is to provide the most enriched and wealth of knowledge education possible to each and every one of its scholars. With a dignified faculty and a great academia curriculum, this university prepares its students for the workplace and corporate America with the tools necessary to achieve excellence.
Am enjoying being here College is a major and quite difficult adjustment from high school. Learning to live on your own and accepting responsibilities and being accountable for your actions are all vital in becoming an adult and this school prepares you and assists you in growing through that. Every educational institution has its downfalls or negatives, but overall I love being a Hamptonian. Being surrounded by such distinguished people and gaining an awesome education while being involve din my school, it doesn't get any better than this!!!
Bang for the buck The tuition is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion, but it is WORTH every dime you spend. With superb dormitories, a beautiful waterfront view, mouth-watering cuisine from our historical cafeteria and the amazing education you receive, you are not losing money. YOU ARE INVESTING IT IN YOURSELF. It's definitely worth it!!!
Tips for prospective students If you plan to attend this institution, be sure to set yourself aside from the next applicant because it's very competitive to become an academic at this institution. Become heavily involved in high school with school organizations, academic wise, and be an advocate for community service. Become an active participant in your community because this is a family based community at Hampton. The more credentials you have, the easier it will be to be accepted.
Great for these types of students This is excellent for anyone. Meaning, you must a driven young man or woman willing to become the best Hamptonian man or woman you can possibly be. Athletes, musicians, singers, academics, and countless others are encouraged to come. I promise this: you will leave a better person than you came here. I have seen such an improvement in myself since I've been and I'm only a freshman. They strengthen your weaknesses and you leave a totally different person. It's definitely an amazing institution for amazing individuals.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Hampton University is an amazing school that gives it's students amazing opportunities. I can honestly say the students and faculty are a family, where both care about the well-being and success of others. The networking opportunities are endless and unavoidable, exactly what college students need.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for a college where you can grow internally and externally Hampton University is the right place. You're always assigned a big brother or big sister, take advantage of them! They are there to help you reach your full potential.
Academic Rigor Hampton University's academic programs prepare you for all aspects of life. Most teachers really care about your success and are willing to work with you outside of class if you need the help. While the work can be intimidating at times, it makes you a person who knows how to manage time, complete tasks, and communicate effectively.
Dorm Life While Hampton is a very prestigious school, it is a national historic landmark. With that being said, most of the buildings are historic, including dorms. They aren't awful but I would love to see them renovated. The problems that arise in the dorms allows for bonding time however.
Food and Dining The food that is served at Hampton University is, well, food. It really is not bad but, like all Colleges, you start missing your home cooked meals after a while. We are currently in the process of building another cafeteria which is right on the water, I'm assuming the food will be even better once in the new location.
What to do for fun Hampton is what you make it, and who you know. There is always something to do, you just have to get involved. Every week is dedicated to a different organization that have programs/ events for every day. These events can range from skate parties, pool parties, dating games, to educated forums.
Bang for the buck Hampton is a private institution, so it is expensive. However, if you take advantage of all the opportunities given, it can be worth all the money you pay and more. Our career center is one of the many things people take for granted. They are constantly sending us emails about internships, job opportunities, and scholarships. If you make a connection with them and make sure you are always seeking new opportunities, they will definitely help you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus As mentioned before our campus is a historic landmark, so anywhere you go there are interesting things. Some of my personal favorite locations on campus would be the water front. Hampton is surrounded by water on three sides, it is myth that if you walk the entire water front with someone you will later marry them. Ogden circle is another favorite. Flags from different countries surround Ogden circle. each of the flags represent all the different nationalities represented at Hampton University. We are so diverse that they have to switch them out sometimes because we ran out of flag polls. AnotherHampton myth is that if you walk through Ogden Circle you will not graduate on time. After graduation, the seniors have a big ceremony at Ogden circle where they walk through and take pictures.
Great for these types of students Hampton is great for students who are looking to cater to their mind, body, and spirit. At Hampton, college is a universal experience. One that can;t be explained in words, you just have to witness it for yourself.
Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs and activities to partake in at Hampton. Of course there is Greek life, but outside of that every major has at least one club or organization that they have. Other clubs would be American Red Cross, NAACP, Women's/ Men's Caucus, Resident Assistant Association, Student Government Association, and Student Leadership Program.
Greek Life Hampton's Greeks are very involved. By the first month, you know who all of them are. Every week we have a gathering called 12-2 where the Greeks stroll and hang out. We do not have frat houses but as said before, they are still very involved.
Campus Safety Hampton University has it's own police department that definitely puts the student's safety first and have no problem calling back-up if there is a situation that requires more staff. They are constantly walking and driving around campus to ensure our safety. Hampton is also a gated community, in which cars must have decals to get on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The name of Hampton University carries a prestigious reputation. The professors are extremely helpful and understanding. Of course the campus life is full of excitement!
Tips for prospective students Before attending the university do some research on the education factors as well as the everyday lifestyle on campus. Being organized will make college really easy. And of course studying should make it a breeze.
Academic Rigor The professors are really helpful. The classes aren't big so it can be easy to understand and get involved with the lesson. Everybody works together for better understanding of the classes.
Dorm Life The dorm life is okay. Not the best and sometimes it can feel crowded.
Food and Dining The food is great. No complaints and the cafe is always packed. You will live!
What to do for fun Every type of college activity is at Hampton University. Organizations for everybody.
Bang for the buck unfortunately Hampton is a bit pricey. But it will be well recognized when up for your job interview.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus is beautiful. From the lake view on campus to the Football stadium.
Great for these types of students Great for the students who take education seriously and want to be successful. Hampton motivates and shows appreciation to the students.
Clubs and Activities For every type of person there is a club or activity. You will always have something to do or an opportunity to be involved.
Greek Life The Greek life is exciting! All over the yard you can see the spirit and enthusiasim of each Fraternity or Sorority. The Greek events are always crowded do to the perfection of the performaces.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a current student in my freshman year of college at Hampton University. Here, I am learning not only about English, Math, or Biology... but, I am also learning a lot about becoming a professional, young man. At Hampton, there is NO TOLERANCE for sagging pants and positively NO HATS are allowed to be worn by young men inside of the buildings. While the campus police and staff work hard at keeping this action enforced, I find it amusing that the men that had the most trouble abiding by this rule, are now coming around to dressing for success. Go Hampton!
Am enjoying being here I am actually enjoying living on campus the most at Hampton U. So far, I have met many people from all over the map, and have managed to find a variety of individuals who share the same interests as I do such as basketball, music, and the debate teams (if politics are interesting to you). The students, as well as the staff, are fun to be around and are very helpful with making it easy to adjust to the environment and vibe of the university. I enjoy being a member of the Hampton family.
Bang for the buck Hampton U is a private college and is quite expensive to attend, especially if you plan to live on campus. But, planning ahead and completing your FAFSA application early will save you time and money. Though the tuition, in my opinion is expensive, the campus life experience is priceless.
Tips for prospective students I have some tips for prospective students wanting to attend Hampton U. First, remember to keep up with the deadlines to apply and complete your FAFSA application (financial aid application) early. Second, do your best on your SAT or ACT tests. And finally, keep your grades high and don't forget to get the best letters of recommendation from the people who know you best, such as guidance counselors, teachers, volunteer activities, jobs, etc. Good luck!
Great for these types of students Hampton U is great for any student who enjoys an urban lifestyle or the city life. While Hampton may have prominently African-American students who attend, many will find it easy to adjust to the friendly and fun environment.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classroom sizes differ depending on your selected major; however, the teachers encourage participation from students which creates an excellent learning environment.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy attending Hampton University. The people are very diverse and come from all over the globe. There isn't much to participate in according to extracurricular activities; however, once you find a program that is right for you it is easy to get comfortable.
Bang for the buck Hampton University is a private institution which is very strict. For the money paid, the rules that are enforced are very restricting. Also, much of the staff is hard to contact which causes much hassle and grief with the students.
Tips for prospective students If you wish to attend Hampton University it is a great and fun school. However, come with the mindset that it is not a school in which you can behave erratically because rules are enforced.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who wish to experience diversity because of the many different backgrounds of the students.

Also Hampton University has a diverse group of student and teachers, that diversity allows students to learn new things. Finally Hampton University is built in such a was that it makes the whole student body a get big family.
Tips for prospective students Some tips for prospective students would have fun and take one day at a time, also take freshman year quiet seriously because if you have a low GPA at the end of your freshman year it is tough to get it up. Another tip would be befriend your teachers, always go to their office hours and ask questions because if you are struggling in the class and you always go to the professor's office hours it will show them that you are trying in their class and they could be more lenient on you.
Academic Rigor The course at Hampton is pretty tough, but if you work hard and get help from your professor the course will get easier, also Hampton has many programs and tutoring sessions to help their students pass their classes.
Dorm Life Dorm life at Hampton is okay, there are just a lot of rules for freshman, for example freshman are on a five week curfew. Also some of the Greeks stroll at 12 to 2.
Great for these types of students Hampton University is great for students who want to be architects in the future because Hampton has a great five year program. Hampton also has a great six year pharmacy program for future pharmacists.
Clubs and Activities Hampton has a lot of clubs that does a lot of community service, for example the organization I am in at Hampton University is called Brother to Brother. This organization goes out to a poor neighborhood called Lincoln Park and we help young male children have fun and teach them good life lessons.
Campus Safety The security at Hampton is superb, there are always police officers roaming the streets on foot and in their squad cars. Also the main gate has an officer working 24 hours seven days a week to ensure our safety. They are allows asking people for there IDs so they now what type of people are coming on campus. There are cameras in all they buildings and the dorm lobbies.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Hampton is a close-knit, service oriented school. It has a beautiful waterfront and historic campus. The University can lay a foundation for success for anyone in almost any field.
Tips for prospective students Be active and participate in activities on campus; Hampton is what you make it. Although the campus' enforced curfew at the beginning of freshman year may seem to be a hindrance, take advantage of it because it encourages great study habits. Academic Rigor Although rigor can be major specific, Hampton challenges its students and encourages them not to equal but to excel. Although some classes may be difficult, they relatively small student to teacher ratio allows for better student development.
Dorm Life Many updated universities have switched from dorm-style, to apartment-style living set ups. The dorm life is a tradition upheld at Hampton. Many dorms have a strong historical presence. Non-local freshman are required to stay in dorms.
Food and Dining Hampton's food plans are limited. Within the next year, the new dining facility will be completed. There is a smoothie shop, a Chick-Fil-A, and a grill in the student center. There are also a few off campus meal places within walking distance, including a Tropical Smoothie, and a McDonalds.
What to do for fun Many organizations throw events year-around for students to participate in. Almost every organization is designated a week during the school year to promote membership and to also expose students to their organization. Students that stay in the Hampton Harbors Apartments across from campus also hold many events throughout the year. There are also shopping malls close by, a beach only 5 minutes away and other cities with plenty of activities within close driving distance from the campus.

Washington. The Emancipation Oak is also located on Hampton's campus. The campus is a National Historic Landmark district.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Hampton University is a top HBCU worth mentioning. The historical buildings, location on the water, and size of the school make this school very beautiful.
Tips for prospective students Visit the school, and ask questions! There's nothing wrong with making sure this is the right school. The campus tours are very helpful and will try to help or direct you to the right answers. Hampton is not for everyone, so don't wait you or anyone else's time if you don't want to be there.
Academic Rigor There is a lot to offer once you really get into your school of choice. The professor are helpful and work along with you. Some schools are more helpful than others, but they do work in your benefit.
Dorm Life A lot of the dorm need to be renovated. Air conditioning and heating as well as elevators sometimes have moments of missing up, it happens at many schools. Historical look of building making the building beautiful and interesting.
Food and Dining There is always something to eat, if you find it. It's not your usual home cook meal, so don't expect that. It gets the job done.

Great for these types of students Students looking for structure and guidance, Hampton would be right for you. As a freshman during your first semester, you will have a curfew but it's helpful when trying to achieve a 4.0. Hampton has the party lifestyle as well, but just like life, its all about balance.

Tips for prospective students Tips that I would give is to make sure you have what you need ready so that you don't have to have what students refer to as the Hampton run around. Also if you decide to come her branch out and meet people, be involved because Hampton truly is what you make it.
Academic Rigor Hampton does take quiet a bit of work and is important to stay on top of things and check in with your professor's regularly to know what your grades are. For any classes that you might find challenging go take them up on the free student tutoring they offer.
Dorm Life The dorm life is OK and freshman have curfew but its good in the way you get to bond and make sure your in to get done what you need to. Although they may look old the buildings are historic and cant be changed on the outside but updates and renovations do occur inside the buildings.
Food and Dining The food has gotten better and the new cafe is almost done and looks very nice. They have a salad bar, pasta and sandwich lines, as well as fast food and traditional.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Hampton University is a great institution that accurately prepares its students for the real world. Hampton University has a great amount of fun and educational activities that keep its students on a steady track towards success. This institution stands on its reputation of excellence by always giving back to the community, and producing over-and-above students that create a outstanding graduation rate.
Tips for prospective students Prospective Students of Hampton University should come to the school with a focused mind to stay on top of their academics. Hampton University will challenge their students. When having difficulty, do not be afraid to seek for help, or ask the professors because there is plenty of help available and the professors are more the happy to work with their students.
Academic Rigor Hampton University's academic rigor is very intense. One of the most recognized attributes of Hampton University is its academics alone. The important factors that help Hampton University maintain such a well-constructed academic program are its patient professors, challenging curriculum, and the extra-curricular programs that are provided to help students succeed to the best of their ability.
Dorm Life Hampton University's dorm life is not good. The campus does not consist of suites, and it only has one coed dorm. Living conditions as far as the bathrooms and other areas are concerned could be improved greatly.
Food and Dining Hampton University's food is not that good. The institution is now building a new cafe which is expected to be top-notch dining. The cafe hours aren't great but they are reasonable.
What to do for fun There are a lot of fun activities at Hampton University. There is always some type of event or celebration that occurs on campus. Also the campus provides the usual college parties in the University's Gym. Other than on campus, Downtown Hampton city is available to students who attend Hampton University. It is within reasonable walking distance of the college campus. In Downtown Hampton the is a movie theatre, skating ring, skiing ring, and swimming pool.
Bang for the buck Hampton University's value is somewhat worth its cost. Campus life is not worth it, but the academic journey is worth it. Hampton University is one of those rare institutions that provide automatic workforce connections and opportunities no matter what a student's major may be.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One unusual tradition and location on campus is the disposing of coal. It has been reported that this process of disposing coal into the air effects local community neighborhoods. The Coal Disposing system is even noted to be located directly behind or near three of the freshman male dorms. Unfortunately though the location seems very dangerous, there has not been a repetitive sequel of reports stating that it affects students on campus.
Great for these types of students Hampton University is great for students who strive for excellence everyday. Students who give 110% energy and dedication towards their academics and self-growth would perfectly fit the profile of a Hamptonian. Hampton University will teach you the life essentials of becoming a self-perservering individual.
Clubs and Activities There are numerous groups, clubs , and organizations on and off campus that support Hampton University's growth. There is almost a club for every academic department. Some of these clubs are not always publicized but they still are recognized for any contribution that they make towards enhancing the progress of the University, its surrounding community, and the students.
Greek Life Greek Life on Hampton University's campus is very active. Most of the chapters on this campus play very significant roles in Greek Life history because they were amongst the initial chapters that were created/organized. Hampton has indulged in so much progress that they are continuously adding Greek Families to Campus.
Campus Safety Hampton University's safety is fairly well. The school has a protective system and a ROTC program that actually train and engage in the protection of the campus if necessary. Hampton University actually has a police station on campus. The police are constantly on on post and are very efficient.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Hampton University is a beautiful campus, visually. The cafeteria does not serve the best food at times. The Hampton Run Around does actually exist, so staying on top of things is a must.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus before you decide to enroll here. If you mind being on curfew freshman year until homecoming (end of October) you shouldn't enroll here. Depending on which dorm you are in, you may experience bugs, water rats and/or racoons
Academic Rigor The curriculum is relatively easy compared to other institutions, but most of the teachers are reasonable. However, there are a few who are from foreign countries and carry heavy accents.
Dorm Life Everything closes on the campus around 9 or 10. The only transportation in the Hampton area is a Taxi (very expensive) or the public bus which is very time consuming
Food and Dining They serve the same food everyday with the exception of changing a few items daily. The only time the food is good is on special occasions (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day etc)
What to do for fun There isnt anything to do on campus that is fun. You have to explore the cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Norfolk to find anything to do.
Bang for the buck Hampton is expensive. I dont feel like I am paying what the school and its experience are worth.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The waterfront is the most active place on campus. Many people (usually couples) go sit out on the water and enjoy the view.
Great for these types of students If you like hard core structure, you should be okay with Hampton's rules and policies regarding attire.
Clubs and Activities The organiztions on campus are lacking. I feel like the enthuasiam of the few organizations that we do have is non existant
Greek Life All of the National Pan Hellenic Greek organizations that are on campus are quiet. This year, three or four of the organizations aren't even on the yard because of their probations.
Campus Safety While I don't care for the active life on this campus, I have never felt unsafe while being here.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences hampton is a school in a beautiful location literally right on the sea. the professors give you much more attention than they would at many other schools since there is a smaller student population. the students come from a variety of backgrounds including wealthy and working class families and the students come from all over the united states in places you would not expect and this will broaden your horizons as you learn new cultures.
Tips for prospective students apply early so you have a chance to get institutional aid.
Academic Rigor your classes will be challenging, but you will surely be ale to manage them because of the great professors.
Dorm Life dorm life at hampton is not anything special. you will only get the bare minimum in hampton's dorms.
Food and Dining hampton university cafeteria food is made by gourmet services and i will let you know it is not great but it is edible. there are also many shops including chic fil a if you would like a change from the cafeteria.
What to do for fun hampton has a fun campus that is much cleaner than many other college campuses without a big problem of recreational drugs. there are always parties, sporting events, waterfront dates etc. there are always concerts locally and their is close shopping at the penninsula town center.
Bang for the buck hampton is a school that will surely keep you entertained and engaged in your learning. they have strong traditions, but the students stay fresh.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the student center is the place to be on wednesdays and fridays from noon to 2:00 pm. the students on campus know it as 12 to 2, there is always a dj spinning, fraternities and sororities strolling, and people just having a good time dancing to the music. if you want to lay back and relax with your significant other, spend time at the waterfront which is a beautiful view of the sea.
Greek Life greek life is always an impact on campus, whether its frats like the smooth and classy kappas or the purple and gold q dogs, or sororities like the well known aka's

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences hampton is a very fun school. there is adventure within its streets if you look hard enough. they push their students to be the best that they can be so that the future will be able to see how brightly they shine.
Tips for prospective students stay on top of your game. don't fall for the typical freshmen attitude of mom and dad aren't here to watch me. that kind of attitude will make you sink or fall. you will realize by the end of the semester if you are where you really want to be grades wise.
Academic Rigor the work isn't going to be as easy as high school work is. somethings you will latch onto with ease, others not so much. but none the less, the work is challenging and pushes you to think beyond what you think your brain can hold
Dorm Life it's pretty cool. wish there were more dorm activities, but that's what talking and discussing with your residential adviser (ra) is all about.
Food and Dining you can tolerate the food. if you don't like the cafe, you can always go to the student center for a bite of delicious foods.
What to do for fun join a club, join an organization like the band or an athletic team. start your own club! there are a lot of possibilities at hampton.
Clubs and Activities there are a lot of clubs for almost everything on this campus. there's a club for the biology, english, engineering, music, history, and many more majors. activities range from blood drives to dances to some times competitions.
Greek Life it is always a great day when you see the greeks stroll in the student center around 12-2. they don't do it often, but when they do, it's a sight to see. to see how suave or sexy they can be to impress the crowd.
Campus Safety you won't be able to go a day at hampton without saying you saw the campus police roll by you. there are safety polls around the campus if you are in trouble. every dorm has an id scanner for whomever needs to enter the dorm. if your id does not match the codes in the system, there is no entry for you.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences hampton university has a beautiful campus, but unfortunately like most hbcus, hu has a horrible administration office. there is never a solid answer to any problems regarding issues with the school and if you have a question or issue it will not be resolved until you go through all of the offices. the campus is historic, but needs to be restored and the education seems sub-par compared to other colleges.
Tips for prospective students explore your options!!! i cannot stress this enough. hampton is great, but it is not for everyone. in fact, hbcus in general are not for everyone. therefore, take a trip and visit hampton u before accepting your acceptance letter. visit on a regular day and not on high school student day or days they have big events because 9 times out of 10 you will make a decision based on how much you enjoyed that one day at hu and become disappointed when you realize that hampton u is not as fun as you thought it would be.
Academic Rigor hampton university's academics are good, and i feel like they are constantly changing and trying to make the school more efficient. there are some good and bad teachers at hampton, but every school has its bad teachers. hampton's scripps howard school of journalism is known for their outstanding performance. hampton's 5 year mba program is also very popular and produces equipped business graduates. overall, i do love my school and enjoy learning here at hampton university.
Dorm Life dorm life at hampton university is one of its worst qualities. since hampton u is a historical university, it is very very old and the buildings and dorms are proof. the dorms are old, dirty, and some do not have air conditioning. the bathrooms are old an are moldy and unsanitary. most students who can afford to move off campus do so after there freshman year. on a more positive note, there are a couple of nice dorms for honors college students, and the dorm directors and resident assistants are wonderful. they look out for you and make sure you have everything you need to stay comfortable. no place is perfect, but a good ra or dorm director could make your dorm experience great.
Food and Dining the cafeteria at hampton u is very popular, but not because the food is good. many students complain about how bad the food is, spoiled food, not enough options, and poor quality. although the cafeteria is known to have horrible food, the administration is well aware and started a building fund to build an new cafeteria. they have started building and the estimated year of completion will be the year of 2014. hopefully, from the looks of the building as of right now, it seems that the building may be done by 2013. we are all waiting!
What to do for fun there are not too many things to do on campus for fun except the one thing every college student looks forward to do, party. there are always parties on campus and off campus in the appartment complex accross the street. in addition, the other few little recreational activities that hu offers are bowling and the game room. if you are looking to do something off and away from campus there is a promenade mall called the pennisuala town center filled with shops, stores, and restaurants. there is a local movie theater not too far from the mall as well. usually, students like to visit neighboring schools such as old dominion university, norfolk state university, and virginia commonwealth university, for events and parties as well.
Bang for the buck a great way to save money is if you are staying on campus make sure you eat at the cafeteria 3 times a day. missing cafe hours can be costly because you then will feel the necessity to order chinese or pizza and that will accumulate at the end of the semester. additionally, the school will give you gourmet dollars which you can use at 3 student center vendor locations. this is your money that comes with your meal plan, therefore use it! lastly, if you are staying off campus, you must know that groceries add up and if you have a roommate sharing groceries can be just as costly as buying groceries separate. a great suggestion is buying your groceries separate and buy in bulk. bj's, sam's club, and costco are great money savers.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there are so many unusual traditions that hampton u has i do not know where to begin. first there is always a freshman week. this week is dedicated to getting to know your classmates and your school. there is always a ceremony at ogden hall which requires you to wear ogden attire. also, the number one rule is to never run across the ogden circle or you will be cursed and will not graduate. next, there is a group called the student leaders which help students and conduct student activities.these leaders are usually assigned to be a freshman's big brother or big sister meaning if you have any questions, concerns, or just need a ride to the store they are here for you. traditionally, freshman eventually meet other upperclass man and choose their on big brothers or sisters. there are so many more traditions, but i rather let you find that out if you choose to come to hampton university.
Great for these types of students if you are ethnic, love culture, enjoy small towns, and small student teacher ratios, hampton university is the school for you.
Clubs and Activities there are clubs and activities for anyone and everyone from the student leaders program to greek life, there is always something to join. there are even clubs for for home state and clubs for your major.
Greek Life greek life at hampton u compared to other schools is not too good. there are many multicultural fraternities and sororities, but there are not many legit greek houses. there are a few fraternities and sororities that seem to always be suspended as well. i rate greek life a 5 out of 10.
Campus Safety hampton's campus is a very safe campus. in fact, most of the campus is gated and the campus itself is surrounded by the hampton bay.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences hampton university is an amazing school and has greatly helped shape the woman i have become and am becoming. i love that the professors are more than willing to help you succeed at whatever you are doing, they try their hardest to make sure that you do not fall short of your goals. i also like that i have met a lot of friends who are like-minded and have a lot of similar interests and goals to me.
Tips for prospective students i would make sure that you are dedicated to doing homework and studying because that is a large part of the curriculum. also, start getting comfortable with working in groups, this school makes sure that each student is ready to be in the workforce by making sure that we are as ready as possible to work with others. it is important to be dedicated to your education and your morals and values.
Food and Dining the current cafeteria is not the best, but it does the job it was designed to do, give you sufficient nutrition. however, the school is currently building a new cafeteria that is supposed to be better than what we currently have.
What to do for fun there is a town center that is not too far away from the campus. there is also a small shopping strip that is just over the bridge from the school, approximately a 10 minute walk. there is also some things to do on campus. there are a lot of clubs and associations that provide all kinds of fun and activities to keep you busy. there is greek life, which some participate in, but one cannot attempt to join a greek organization until their sophomore year. overall, although hampton, va is a small town, there are still plenty of things to do.
Bang for the buck this school is quite expensive, but it provides each student with an education for life. it allows each student the opportunity to excel in whatever they desire.
Great for these types of students this school is great for students that are dedicated to their education and willing to learn.
Clubs and Activities there are a lot of different clubs and activities. it is important to find the ones that you enjoy and have fun doing them.
Greek Life greek life is very important and prevalent on this campus. it is fun to participate in greek sponsored activities whether you are greek or not.
Campus Safety campus safelty is very good. however, it is important to realize, no matter what school you go to, that you are the most important factor in your safety. many times your safety is reflective of the precautions you take. make sure to always walk in groups and to know where you are going.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students If you are a prospective student you really need to stay focused. Stay on top of important priorities like laundry, homework and money; and keep your social life and academic life balanced. Hampton is as fun as you make it.
Academic Rigor The classrooms are very small and it allows you the opportunity to get to know your classmates as well as your professors. Academics are very important and your professors will work with you if you are willing. Online homework assignments can be challenging but you have tutors to assists you with your most challenging of work.
Dorm Life Dorm life needs a lot of improvement because of the age of the School. Renovations would be nice because of the type of money that students put into the School. The dorms would also be better if they would enhance the electrical surges in the building so that students would be allowed to bring refrigerators.
Food and Dining The food is not the best, it needs a lot of improvement. The food needs to be handled in a more sanitary way. The Cafeteria has opened up at more beneficial hours, but food variety would really make a great difference.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students The best tips is to manage your time. College is so different than high school, meaning much more responsibility and experience makes you mature and grow much faster. It is your job as a student to maintain your grades, your social image ( and yes networking is very important) and your financial status.
Academic Rigor As my high school pre-warned me, there are many foreign professors. In this case it is my job as a student and an adult to stay on myself to work harder and even stay on my teacher to help me succeed. The best thing about my teachers is they do not baby me but push me to reach heights even higher than I thought I could achieve.
Dorm Life Although Hampton University is a very old school, with building being somewhat run-down when compared to the new ODU; i love attending HAmpton University. Dorm life is an experience between meeting new friends and making life-long partnerships. I have also made it a habit t befriend the people in my dorm to make life easier, when dealing with friendships and group projects and even study sessions.
Food and Dining The worst part about the school is probably the cafe food. Although sometimes their food is good, I am very tired of baked chicken and rice and most of their food has no seasoning. The cafe ice cream is great and the staff is as well. I have made some friends in the staff with some of the young as well as the older staff members and for that I am grateful.
What to do for fun Hampton University is not a boring school but it is located in a boring area; Hampton, VA. I enjoy spending my team with my best friends and joining a dance team known as Majestic. Social Networking is great for friendships, business and even educational success.
Bang for the buck Although I do not exactly have the money to attend Hampton University, I chose this school because I knew it would lead me to personal growth as well as a professional one. On a social level I have joined one of the best dance teams belonging to a college: Majestic. Overall I am glad I chose HU and I will do anything to make sure I remain there.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The best location on campus is the waterfront. It offers a beautiful view of amazing sunsets and sunrises. One section of it as my best friends and myself call it The Oasis of Peace offers a serene place where I can spend alone time with my thoughts or enjoying the company of a special someone.
Clubs and Activities Hampton University is home to many great athletes; dancers, cheerleaders, football players and of course basketball players. The only thing we need more of is school spirit and it is up to HU and their students to do something about it. HU students are very dedicated when they have a reason to be.
Greek Life After seeing movies like Stomp the Yard and even researching Greek Life, i had very high expectations. Unfortunately HU did not meet those expectations in their Greek area.
Campus Safety Hampton University is not by any means, an open campus and this allows me to feel safe at all times.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Hampton University is an extremely strict insitution, were freshman are given a curfew and have limited freedoms. This maybe in order to have control over the freshman class and have them focus on school work, but to those who are mature, this is a nuisance. Besides this the faculty are very helpful and want to see you succeed and the big brother, big sister program is excellent and Hampton University a big family.
Tips for prospective students Utilize your big brothers and sister they will help guide you and don't worry too much about curfew, freshman only have curfew till homecoming. In addition to this, go to pre-college you will meet a lot of people and have college credits already going into your freshman year; which makes that year so much more easier.
Academic Rigor As an electrical engineering major and midshipman in NROTC, the course load is extremely hard. As a freshman I had 17 credits during the fall and 20 credits during the spring.
Dorm Life Harkness Hall is the best dorm with the largest rooms, however the dorm director is very strict. James Hall is less strict and you will have the most freedom.
Food and Dining The food is sometimes amazing and then other times horrible.
What to do for fun The school offers a lot of fun things to do and sponsors many parties in order to keep kids from drinking. Everyone goes to these parties and I'm glad Hampton does this.
Bang for the buck Through the parties and extras Hampton offers its students, they really do give you a lot of bang for the buck.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Hampton doesn't really have any unusual traditions, but they are very traditional.
Great for these types of students Anyt type there are every color and creed of students at Hampton.
Clubs and Activities They're are numerous clubs and activities like student government, major specific clubs, and student leaders.
Greek Life Greek life is amazing with the Divine 9 strolling through the campus during 12 to 2.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are small so you get that wonderful one on one experience with your professors. The professors are passionate about their job. What I enjoy about my classes is that the teachers don't read from the textbook they give examples from their own lives. The teachers have office hours so if you need extra help they are free to help.
Am enjoying being here I love being at Hampton. It is in a rural area but there is never a dull moment. I think since we have people from every where like CA, FL, TX, NY, NJ and the other 45 states you learn a lot about different musics, styles , dances and even food. It is an awesome experience. There is Greek life on campus so it is always exciting to see them stroll or stomp. Hampton is defiantly the HBCU to attend.
Bang for the buck The food is good and the dorms are nice. The classes are great and the people are wonderful. I feel that the tuition is worth it all.
Tips for prospective students Just be yourself and join as many clubs as possible. It is college so have fun but stay on top of you school work.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The class sizes are not all that huge, which makes it extremely easy to get to know your professor, which of course would be in you're best interest. The professors are all different of course, but when it boils down to it a class and grade average is really what you as the student make it. Not only do you learn academically, but Hampton provides you with guidelines on how to survive in the real world, especially the professional work world. It provides you with the discipline and tools to be ready for the next stage upon graduating.
Am enjoying being here Upon first arriving as a Freshman you'll think its lame that they require freshman to abide by a curfew until right before homecoming. What makes it fun is that you don't have to go it alone. Your other incoming Freshman friends are dealing with it too. It forces you to make friends early on as well as focus more on your academics, and entering into the University with a great GPA. I finished out my freshman year with a GPA of a 3.8 The campus is gorgeous, with a view of the Chesapeake Bay, and historical timeless buildings. They say the friends you make here are lifetime friends, and the truth is, that they are right.
Bang for the buck It is very known that Hampton is a quite expensive school to attend. Most of it's students are out of state, and believe it or not, the cost for in state is exactly the same as out of state. In a sense it is fair that way, but then again it is a private institute. The education matched with the tools for survival as well as netorking opportunities one can receive here make it all worth it.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students incoming freshman as well as transfer should look to Hampton as a new opportunity, a difference from their current higher education institute and opportunity, and a place they can call home. Don't be afraid to ask why, make good friends throughout the campus, as well as keep in touch with superiors in each department on campus. Step outside of your norm and be aggressive at the things you wish to achieve. Set goals for yourself and do not be afraid to ask for help to get you there. After all, it is a community.
Great for these types of students Hampton University is great for the student that would like to experience living amongst students from all different regions of the U.S. It is also the ideal atmosphere for the student that likes a warm family-oriented environment. Upon arriving as a freshman you are assigned someone called a big brother or big sister, and they voluntarily help you throughout you're undergrad years in ways you couldn't imagine.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Being a Hamptonian you learn a lot. They way you learn things are through the hard way, you have to get it and get it quick because they can be very serious. The important things like how to perform in a business world and how you should look and dress are just a few of the good things they teach here.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being a Hamptonian. O f course campus living is not the best but it is dorm living so you have to adapt. At Hampton it is all about who you know, so it cause you to become very social.
Bang for the buck Hampton is pretty pricey but it is a private school. The work and life lesson's you get out of it are very helpful though. If you are not serious about getting your education and you just want to party then paying that much is not worth it.
Tips for prospective students Always be alert and listening. Remember to bring a black suit and some dress clothes for Ogden events. Visit the campus to make sure its right for you. Question current students about their experiences. Be careful in the Harbors!
Great for these types of students Hampton is great for students who are social, lie to be involved and are serious about their education. Student who know how to manage time will do great here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I really love the education here. The professors here are very helpful and explanatory. They help you to understand what's going on in class. I really enjoy all my classes even though there is a lot of work.
Am enjoying being here I live right on campus and the campus is beautiful. Of course like any other college it has it's flaws, but it feels good to wake up every morning to see the water right outside the door. Also, meeting new people here is really cool. It is made up of predominantly black students, but they are all from different parts of the US even the islands. There is still a diverse side with Caucasians from different countries. I met people all the way from Bulgaria!
Bang for the buck Hampton is a very expensive school and books and supplies have to come out of pocket, but to me it's worth it. Any where you go you'll have to struggle with something. The only thing that really matters is what you get out of it and that's your education.
Tips for prospective students If you're looking to come to Hampton, you should visit the campus. Tour guides are regular students here that show you around to the different buildings and show it's history. The best time to come is High School day because you're more interactive with the campus over a course of a couple days rather than just one day. Homecoming is also a great time to come check out what Hampton is all about.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers at Hampton are great! They really seem to care about the students. I love that the classrooms are small. I can really connect with my teachers.
Am enjoying being here I love being here because of all the wonderful people I have met. It is so surreal to be surrounded by all types of people from all over the world! At Hampton you really have to become involved to be apart of the school.
Bang for the buck Sometimes I find myself wondering why I pay so much for a school and they can't take care of the little things. But I remember why I am here and I feel it may all be worth it.
Tips for prospective students Do your research on the school. Come visit. Don't just come to highschool day, there is more to Hampton than what you seen then.
Great for these types of students Ambitious, focused leaders
