    Am learning a lot

    As a Secondary Education student I feel like Hendrix is preparing me to be the best teacher I can be. My classes are challenging, engaging, and just plain incredible. They require a lot of work and thought, but that's what I came here for, to learn!
    Am enjoying being here

    Hendrix is an amazing place, a week doesn't go by without a million activities available to attend. I D.J. at the school radio station, attend sporting events, go to art shows, parties, lectures, discussion groups, help with the Hendrix community garden, take violin lessons, work out in the amazing Heath and Wellness Center... there's hardly time to breathe! But seriously, there's something here for everybody, and I love it.

    Hendrix is very expensive, but it is an incredible school. The social atmosphere and incredible learning opportunities make it worthwhile.
    Tips for prospective students

    Prospies: come visit the campus, you will fall in love with it. When I came to Hendrix for the first time the summer before my senior year of high school I was so impressed. By the time I was applying for schools I already knew that Hendrix was my very first choice, no doubt about it. So I really reccomend coming to visit, being here is the real end all. And you can come spend two days here and sleep in a current student's dorm room to get the full experience. I never did that, but it's a really awesome program and I definitely recommend that.

    Hippies, hard workers, smartie pants', dorks, geeks, really awesomely cool people, environmentally conscious folks, casual bicyclists, people who aren't into greek life, druggies, partiers, and maybe even YOU!

    Am learning a lot

    At Hendrix, you are required to take certain core classes which will vastly expand your knowledge and your lexicon. I learned quite a bit about religion in Journeys, a class required to be passed by all students before graduation. In my other classes, I've gone further in depth on subjects than I would have though possible in the semester time limit. I've thoroughly enjoyed learning accounting right along side pottery. Because it is a Liberal Arts school, Hendrix will serve to teach you a lot about many subjects not just one or two.
    Am enjoying being here

    I absolutely love the environment of Hendrix. The community is small (only 1350 students, I believe) and everyone knows everyone else. This doesn't just makes the parties and dances more interesting; it allows for students to get more attention from teachers as well as support for special events like drama performances and concerts. It's also a great environment for finding study partners because you know everyone in your classes, which are relatively small, not just the person sitting next to you. Also, there is little to no discrimination for sexual orientation, race, etc. What discrimination that may be felt is suppressed by those who feel it or is slowly transformed into acceptance. It's a great place to be no matter who you are.

    Hendrix costs a pretty penny. All in all, the money is worth it. The community helps to promote growth academically and socially. There are a lot of community activities to attend like dances, concerts and parties; paid for by the student senate using your student activities fee. The teachers all know your names and faces and are more than willing to help you with extra lessons if need be. The money you spend definitely seems worth it while you are there.
    Tips for prospective students

    Apply for every scholarship you can find if money is an issue; especially if it's the final factor in whether or not you choose Hendrix. The money is worth it. Take the ACT as many times as it takes to get a 32 because then you've basically paid for college if you can keep up your grades.

    Am learning a lot

    The course load can be tough at times but I can honestly say I do learn a lot. The teachers are always available in some way or fashion to help when a student is struggling until they understand the material. All the teachers seem to love what they teach which makes learning from them that much easier

    There's always something to do. If partying isn't your thing, there's always events going on to encourage students to get involved. The people are varied and crazy fun which makes every day different

    Hendrix is expensive but the campus itself is gorgeous with great academics and the highest percentage of graduates accepted into graduate programs/schools in the state

    Meet with professors that are in your interested major/minor. They can tell you what to except for the next 4 years if you do take that route.

    There's something for everyone whether you're an athlete, musician, artist, science geek. history buff, etc!

    Tips for prospective students

    Be prepared to be challenged in ways that you would not normally anticipate. Hendrix is a place that has a place for everyone, so many students find it hard to actually take time out of their day for much-needed studying if they don't prepare. The teachers are wonderful, but the classes can be extremely challenging at times, so even if a class LOOKS easy--- it's a trap! Just keep studying and you'll be fine.
    Also, get to know the Dean of Students. He's extremely likable, looks like Will Ferrell, and loves knowing what students are up to. Worried about breaking the ice with him? Ask him why Will Ferrell looks like him!
    Academic Rigor

    The classes are very in-depth and challenging. Several of the lecturers here care very deeply about their fields of study, and wish to lend that knowledge to their students. As a result, however, these professors are immensely popular amongst the students, and it can be difficult to get into their classes.
    Dorm Life

    The RAs seem to vary between being too attentive about what goes on in the dorm (to the extent that they come off as nosy and invasive) or not attentive enough (to the extent that they come off as neglectful and inattentive).
    However, generally the dorms are pretty nice to live in. Hendrix has no Fraternities, so partiers go to Martin Hall.
    Food and Dining

    The lunch ladies here are SO kind it's remarkable! The food here is also amazing. I have never had a negative experience with the Dining Services, nor have I ever heard of a student who has.
    What to do for fun

    Hendrix offers a variety of clubs to join, and even allows students to hold unofficial clubs on school grounds. Perhaps amongst the most unique is the Hendrix College Sword Club, who play with swords made out of duck-tape and PVC. It certainly draws a crowd, though opinions on them may vary.
    If that's not quite your thing, the Hendrix Lacrosse Team can offer a sports-alternative that may seem refreshing in an otherwise mostly-sports-empty college.
    Even interest groups such as Students for Black Culture or charity groups like Campus Kitty play a large role on the Hendrix campus. It's hard NOT to find something to do.

    The college is VERY expensive, and also very nice. However, that sets an extremely high standard which the college can have a tough time living up to. Overall, it's a great college and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else, but the prices can be smothering at times.

    Shirttails is an event that happens at the beginning of every year. It's a Freshman-only thing, and it offers a great way for the newcomers to get their foot in the door when it comes to getting to know upperclassmen. Search Youtube for Hendrix College shirttails, and I think you'll fall in love with the college.

    Students who are naturally inquisitive, academically interested, and creative in more ways than one find their place here.

    Hendrix offers an EXTRAORDINARILY wide variety of clubs and activities, which students gleefully take part in.

    There are no fraternities at Hendrix College.

    I have only heard one or two stories of any kind of campus incident. And even then, they were stories of things that happened to students off-campus.

    Hendrix College has allowed me to challenge myself academically and athletically while providing an engaging atmosphere for anyone. It has everything one looks for in a college, and the smaller population of students allows advisors to create personal relationships with every student on campus, which shows that Hendrix is always willing to help their students at any time. I have come to find that Hendrix is full of encouraging and helpful teachers and staff that always take the time to help students out and push them to a brighter future.

    Prospective students will always find that everyone at Hendrix is there to answer your questions and help you out in life. One of the first things incoming freshman observe is that upperclassmen never get tired of sharing their knowledge of the campus! Everyone loves Hendrix because it has everything you need to make your college experience great!
    Academic Rigor

    Hendrix College provides challenging and engaging classrooms that are difficult to find elsewhere. Teachers are experienced and always incorporate class discussions on interesting topics. While the academics and work load is tough at Hendrix, it will prepare students for the difficulties of graduate school.
    Dorm Life

    The dormitories at Hendrix are always clean and well managed by staff and respected by the students who live in them. They provide a community atmosphere with the other dorm residents, and the other dorms as well. Dorm life at Hendrix is surprisingly not extremely loud as other colleges might be, and while Hendrix does not have a Greek system, the dorms do come together to host parties and cookouts with each other, just like the Greek dorms do!
    Food and Dining

    The food at Hendrix is exceptional, and the dining staff are always happy and extremely nice. While other colleges might just have fast food restaurants, the dining staff cook different food every day, and are always happy to cook other things for you. The cafeteria is very vegan friendly as well. Hendrix dining staff love the students, so when it is a student's birthday, the staff will make them a cake and sing to them. The cafeteria is a great environment and also has special days where the staff will decorate the cafeteria!
    What to do for fun

    Hendrix College has something going on every night, and students never seem to get bored. Intramurals are very popular for students, or the many clubs and organizations Hendrix has on campus provide entertaining breaks from studies. Hendrix holds music nights almost every week, and students in a dorm will also get together to hold movie nights in the common room. There is an endless amount of things one is able to do at Hendrix!

    At Hendrix you will receive a top education that will better prepare you for graduate school than most other schools. The student to teacher ratio allows one on one interaction, something you will not find in large schools! Students are able to sit down with advisors who will get to know them personally and discuss their future careers and how to get there. Hendrix takes their students seriously and propels them forward to succeed in life after college.

    An unusual tradition on campus is the dance competition held at the beginning of fall semester. Each dorm creates a dance in which the residents of the dorms dance in front of the entire school in the Brick Pit in the center of campus. Whoever wins in the women and men categories get to jump in the fountain! Another tradition is when someone is dumped in the fountain on their birthday, in which they also receive a cake from the dining staff! A cafeteria tradition in the Disco Trays. Whoever picks a disco tray up is said to have good luck for the rest of that day!

    Hendrix is welcome to all types of students, but students at Hendrix must be serious about their education. With a difficult work load from classes, students must not waste time for they will essentially be wasting their money. Teachers want to give their students the best, so in return the students must respect the teachers and complete the work. If one works hard, they will fit right in at Hendrix, no matter their background or personality.
    Clubs and Activities

    Hendrix provides many clubs and organizations that students participate in. Whether it is athletics such as soccer, baseball, volletball, etc., or intramurals like dodgeball, students have many athletic clubs to join. Or students might like to join academic clubs that go with their major of Chemistry,Biology, etc. Perhaps a student might want to make their own club! Hendrix is willing to open doors for all students!
    Greek Life

    While Hendrix does not have a Greek life, it has similar traditions that Greeks participate in as well. Hendrix as brother and sister dorms like Greek dorms. These dorms help each other out and create a community feeling with each other, as well as the other dorms. Sometimes Greek life can be a little too wild, and at Hendrix it is important to get a good education, but it is also important to have fun as well! There is a balance of work and play at Hendrix that has always seemed to fit perfectly.
    Campus Safety

    Campus Safety is always there to help anyone of need, no matter what time it is. Whether you need your car jumped or you locked yourself out of your room (yes it happens), campus safety is there to help you out of any situation! The men from campus safety are extremely nice, and will inspect you car for you before long road trips! So always keep their number in your phone, because campus safety will help you with anything!

    Hendrix students, faculty, and support staff share a vibrant community spirit. People are friendly, energetic, and curious about the world. It's a fun place to learn.
    Tips for prospective students

    Ask your student guides whatever you want; don't be afraid or shy. Also, if you decide to come here, get your housing form in quickly!
    Academic Rigor

    You will be challenged, but it's great because professors are usually so approachable. You can get help when you need it.
    Dorm Life

    It depends on which dorm you're in and what personality you're looking for. The dorms are a bit like frats, as they all have a specific vibe to them. You should ask older students when you visit what each dorm is like. Most people move into school-owned apartments when they're juniors, which also have some personality to them but aren't tightly knit like the dorms.
    Food and Dining

    The caf ladies (and men!) are amazing, and get to know us. (You will love Mimi.) They're genuinely interested in our well-being. They do theme days at least once a month as well, where they decorate the caf, dress up in costumes, and serve themed food dishes. My favorite this year was the Carnival day.
    What to do for fun

    lots of on-campus events every day/evening. Join clubs, hang out with your friends, play pool in the SLTC, party on weekends, go to movie screenings, etc etc.

    Getting tossed in the fountain and sung to in the caf on your birthday, disco tray frenzy, Shirttails dance for freshmen, and a lot of the same theme parties happen every year. We like themes.

    Hardworking but laid back students will be very happy here.

    There are so many clubs, and they put on tons of events. There's never a shortage of things to do.

    Am learning a lot

    There is always a ton of stuff to do! The teachers are all wonderful and they push you to do well. If you have a question or you just need to talk about the class, just e-mail them and they get right back to you. They are always willing to talk and help you. One teacher even lets students study in her office so if they have questions, she's right there to help. There are also tutoring sessions at least three times a week in different subjects and there is also a writing center to help with those pesky essays.
    Am enjoying being here

    I love it here. It's warm compared to Iowa and it's gorgeous in the fall. Everyone here is extremely helpful from the other students to the cafeteria cooks to the house cleaning people in the dorms. It's just a nice home-like atmosphere.

    It definitely is worth the tuition. There are many Hendrix graduates who have gone on to do wonderful things in the world from assisting the hunger problems in Africa and other poor countries to helping students here in the U.S. Plus, with the Odyssey program, you have the opportunity to study abroad anywhere in the world for free! If you are able to be picked for the funding of course.

    Apply early, even if you aren't sure that you want to go to Hendrix. There is always the chance that you apply late and you aren't let in!

    Am learning a lot

    I feel the best thing about Hendrix College is the small class sizes. All the classes I have taken so far have a had a range of 15-30 students per class and I feel this is the ideal amount for interactive learning. With classes this size there are enough people to make discussion helpful and interesting, yet few enough people to allow for more individual help both in and out of class. The fact that this college is also a Liberal Arts College also allows for a wide variety of courses which is great when coupled with the aforementioned class sizes.
    Am enjoying being here

    Hendrix has a small but beautiful campus which includes wonderful lawns and common grounds for students to relax in. The new Student Life & Technology Center (SLTC) is especially cool with it's late night cafe, really nice cafeteria, very accessible computer lab, and extensive games room. The small size of the campus makes it easy to get from class to class quickly, but it is still large enough to take walks in or to ride your bike around.

    The tuition is about $40,000 which is a bit steep, but every student here receives some form of financial aid and I know that I was able to get about half of my tuition covered through their scholarships. It is definitely worth it when you take into account the variety of classes, new facilities, and the general environment.
    Tips for prospective students

    Definitely do not underestimate this schools standards for it's students because of it's relative obscurity and kind of party atmosphere. I've learned that the unofficial motto of most students here is Party hard and study harder.
    Great for these types of students

    I would recommend this school to students who are looking for a small liberal arts college that has a generally politically Liberal atmosphere and doesn't mind a prominent party scene. An average GPA of 3.0 is the most common here, but would still be challenging to those of an even higher GPA.

    Will learn a lot

    I think the opportunities Hendrix has to offer are immense. I wanted to attend so badly after learning more about the Odyssey Program. People seem to be so worldly after trying the new things that the program allows them, and I have no doubt that the traditional academic atmosphere is likewise as rewarding.
    Will enjoy being here

    The main thing that I got from visiting Hendrix is that it is the ultimate bridge between a good education and a fun college experience. I think that pretty much anyone could be convinced to come out of their shell and have the time of their lives at Hendrix.

    Hendrix is a private school, but if youre a good student, you'll get a fair amount of money. The only reason I didn't go was because I was uncomfortable taking out ANY amount of loans, and I really didn't have much left in the way of that.
