Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I know it's impossible to be unbiased about JMU as a student there, but I really do believe that JMU is the most underrated school in Virginia. The academics are overshadowed by its rival, Virginia Tech, who is rumored to be the better school but the academics at JMU are superb. Professors really care (for the most part; there are always exceptions to the rule), and a lot of them, from my experience, like to engage in discussions. Lots of studying going on in the libraries and in Showker (the business building). I'm definitely learning a lot! Nothing like high school!!!
Am enjoying being here JMU has a special aura about it. It's the friendliest town (Harrisonburg, VA) and you can feel the spirit as soon as you veer off of exit 245 off of interstate 81. The people are great, the social life is great, sports are great (if you can accept that you're not at a Division I school), and it's a place where you can definitely balance your social and academic life (so long as you choose not to make the typical freshman mistake of drinking until you realize you are on academic probation).
Bang for the buck Tuition for in-state is currently set at $3,622. I would say that's pretty amazing for the academics, events the school puts on, and free sports games. Definitely a bang for your buck!!!
The only thing I can say that is overpriced is the meal plan. Only freshman are required to participate in a meal plan, which is usually around $1,600 per semester. BUT JMU's food is #5 in the nation, and it really is great. I live off-campus this year, but still participate in a meal plan because I love campus food. Just make sure that once you live off-campus, when purchasing a meal plan, get it all in dining dollars. The punch plan really punches your pockets.Tips for prospective students JMU is great. Again, a very underrated school that needs recognition. A high retention rate; you'll love it and definitely enjoy your 4 years in Harrisonburg. You don't want to go to VCU because it won't feel like a college campus. You don't want to go to Virginia Tech because let's face it- it's the most overrated school in Virginia. Yeah, it has good football, but when it comes down to it, that's all it has. You don't want to go to Mason because it's such a huge commuter school, therefore the social life isn't as great. You don't want to go to UVA, for lots of reasons. So, COME TO JMU!
Great for these types of students Great for students who are academically motivated, but don't want to study your brains out (like kids at UVA). For students who are looking for a great social life and academic life at the same time. For students who are ready to be social and mingle with all the people at JMU- a very social school! Get ready to play hard, study hard, and gain the freshman 15!!!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I started off with five luck-of-the-draw classes. They were all challenging and all required a lot of work but I never really had to push myself. However, my grades weren't the highest of any of my classes either. JMU has a great college atmosphere and you just have to be wary that it doesn't take away from your work ethic.
Am enjoying being here This is a great campus. Right size, right people, and the right locations nearby. You can't have a car first year on campus but you don't need it. Nowhere is farther than a 15 minute walk. Also, sunsets and snow make for beautiful landscapes, and you will find that that does mean a lot when you end up spending four years of your life at whichever college you go to.
Bang for the buck Normal priced but it offers everything. And hey, if not, there are plenty of job opportunities around. Some job fairs come to the college as well as job pamphlets through the mail. I got a job within two months of being there. Just watch out for the Vector Marketing scam.
Tips for prospective students I thought location meant nothing. It does. I thought party life meant nothing. It does. One sounds good; one doesn't. The atmosphere and location around JMU make for a great life around JMU. You will enjoy it here. The problem is, is that there is a pretty big party life here, and if that is not for you then I'd still recommend coming here, providing you have the power to say no.
Great for these types of students Students who want to enjoy their next four years. If you know what major you want or don't then that's fine, you have quite a while to decide and quite a few majors to choose from. There is diversity also. The only problem is that JMU does suffer from a bit of grade inflation, so if you're looking to end up being a lawyer or something who stands out from the rest, you may want to look into another college. You may still want to come here, but you'd have to engage yourselves in quite a variety of extracurricular activities I should assume, which JMU has a lot of.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot JMU has an amazing General Education program that all incoming students must complete. The program is great because it really ensures that you're getting a well-rounded education and that you're gaining exposure to many different fields of study. For example, I'm a Nursing major and I ended up taking an Art History class that focused on Renaissance to Modern art. I was blown away by the class, which was something I never thought was possible. I found something new that interested me and learned a great deal about art in the process. The program is useful for students who haven't declared a major, too, because they gain exposure to many realms of study.
Am enjoying being here I love it so much here, I can't imagine being at any other college. I've really enjoyed the people, specifically. The people on my hall are all very close and I was able to make many friends easily. Word of advice: Pick your roommate. You never know who you'll end up with. I ended up with a beginner alcoholic that thought it was okay to pre-game in our room two times a week. Even if you don't know the person amazingly well that you've decided to room with, you're better off. As a disclosure, some people love their randomly-chosen roommates, so don't let my experience be the end-all-be-all of situations.
Bang for the buck In-state tuition is set at $3,622.00 and out-of-state tuition is $9,688.00. When compared to other out-of-state prices, it could be a lot worse! The food is expensive, but well worth it! The bus system is free and very necessary.
Tips for prospective students Definitely tour the campus and get a feel for yourself. Get a good idea about what the dorms look like, because a lot of them are amazing, but some aren't so great. Pick your roommate, trust me. Having a bad roommate (really at any college) can change your whole living situation. Don't buy a printer, it's only five cents at the library and you aren't printing novels so it's cheaper that way.
Great for these types of students James Madison University is really great for a student that's looking to get involved and receive a well-rounded education. Students are challenged by the classes, and forced to really work for their grades. So if you're up to it, you'll receive a great education at a great school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I love my classes here. Some people mock the general education classes, but my English class and Psychology classes have been two of my favorites here thus far. The teachers are always here to help. They have office hours, are so accommodating to your schedules, and are genuinely great people. Of course there are exceptions, but they are far and few in between. I cannot even put into words how huge of a change JMU has had on me as a person. The classes have taught me so much and really have a large influence on the way I look at certain topics.
Am enjoying being here I love being here and so does everyone else. I work at the calling center, and talk to many alumni. Not one of them had a bad experience here and tell me how much I am going to miss it after graduation, which I already know. The people here are fantastic. Everyone is friendly and I find myself talking to everyone. There are so many opportunities for social events, community service, and support groups. I do not know that any school is a happier place to be. Going home for vacations are usually my least favorite times of the year.
Bang for the buck I am an out of state student, so it is more expensive. However, it is still not insane, and totally worth it. My only criticize is that they do not give out much financial aid. However, I have never been happier, I am getting a great education, and would never want to go anywhere else. So basically, it is worth every penny.
Tips for prospective students Apply early! I would also say live on the Quad or East Side of campus. And walk the campus; don't take the buses. They are stuffy and annoying. I used to take them, but walking around JMU really improves the way you feel about it (it is so beautiful). In general, apply here. I can't think of anything negatives as to why you would want to go anywhere else.
Great for these types of students I think the reason I love JMU so much is because it is really conducive to helping students find their place in life. I had no idea what path I wanted to take, but JMU has so much to offer, it really gave me the chance to find where I belong. So, students that are a little lost, JMU will make you into something more than you could have expected.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I find all the courses I have taken so far to be interesting and informative. For example, last semester I was in a lab research class examining bactierophage DNA.
Am enjoying being here I love this campus so much! Everyone really enjoyes being here. I've met tons of great people. I'm almost never in my dorm room. I have study groups for every class. I've also joined club ultimate frisbee, make your mark on madison, and nursing students association.
Bang for the buck Out-of-state tuition is around $26,000, or just a few thousand more than Rutgers in-state
Tips for prospective students GET INVOLVED. You get from your college experience exactly what you put into it. There are over 350 clubs on campus, you will be able to find at least one that suits you. Also, when choosing classes ratemyprofessor.com is essential.
Great for these types of students If you like meeting new people, a four season climate, and trying new things, then JMU is for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Overall, yes. I'm a sophomore so most of my courses so far have been gen eds and on average they're really good. In other words, some have been phenomenal and some I kind of had to muddle through, but you get that everywhere. I've learned a lot outside of the classroom, too, whether through conversations with the people here, in clubs I've joined, or at activities on campus.
Am enjoying being here I love JMU and I love being here. I'm so proud to be a duke and I feel so fortunate to be a part of this community. When I visited I knew JMU was right for me because it just has such a great atmosphere. The people are friendly, there's so much to get involved in, and I've made the best friends. Now, it didn't happen right away; it's something you have to work for, but we do our best to help you out, what with orientation week and all the organizations and activities to get involved in.
Bang for the buck Ok, I'm an out of stater so it's definitely not cheap. However, you get a lot for your money and it includes everything. I know at some schools you have to pay to use the gym facility or other things like that, but at JMU everything is included. It's really nice because I never really have to spend money. It's different once you move off campus and have to buy groceries, but it's up to you when you want to do that.
Tips for prospective students Honestly, just be yourself. For the most part, JMU is really non judgmental. Also, have an open mind, be engaged, and work hard. JMU is amazing, and you should come here!!
Great for these types of students JMU is great for all types of students, and you can find your niche in so many different places. Mostly, though, we want friendly, hard-working people who are going to be active members of our community.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences James Madison University is one of the most amazing colleges you will ever attend. The campus is beautiful, the people are friendly, and the academics are superb. I could not be more proud to be a part of the Duke family.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to you be yourself when you come here. There are so many different kinds of people that will accept you for who you are. Find out what interests you and get involved. You are surely bound to find something you're passionate about, especially when you get to choose from over 3,000 organizations. Also, be ready to bleed purple and gold. This is the most spirited school I've ever experienced!
Academic Rigor The General Education program here is AMAZING. Even if you have no idea what you want to do, the GenEd classes are sure to lead you in the right direction. You take anything from Art History to Computer Science and everything in between. The professors are amazing and genuinely care about your education and are usually willing to help you whenever you need it!
Dorm Life The dorms are sort of hit or miss here. They're spread all around campus and there are several different types. Some are traditional hall style and some are arranged in suites that have a common room. It all depends on what you like. The most popular are The Village (suites), East Campus (hall style), and The Lake. I think dorm life really depends on if you get a roommate/suite mates who you are compatible with. In regards to this, Residence Life is usually very good at assigning roommates. Personally, my roommate is my best friend so it worked out very well for us.
Food and Dining Our food is AMAZING! We're ranked 5th best in the nation, which isn't too shabby. We have so many dining facilities to choose from, so whatever you are in the mood for you can most likely find. The food is high quality as well, and I've never had a complaint.
What to do for fun There are so many things to do on campus! Aside from participating in our many organization, we have several events that go on. The university holds concert, comedy shows, and more. We also have a movie theater on campus that shows current movies for cheaper than the regular movie theater. There are also countless plays and music programs that play at our performing arts center. In other words, you will never be bored here at JMU!
Bang for the buck I'm out of state, and tuition for us is more than double what the in-state tuition is. So, sometimes I feel a little ripped off because I have to pay so much more. But I love it here, so I wouldn't have it any other way. In state tuition on the other hand, is incredibly cheap, so if you're looking for a quality education and want a reasonable price, look no further!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Football games are full of traditions! Every time there is a touchdown the entire student section throws purple and gold streamers! It makes for a really cool effect. Also, our freshman orientation is probably one of the most amazing experiences every student has here. It's called 1787 and each freshman is assigned to a group that lives in their dorm and they go around and go to presentation and do fun activities. It's a really good way for everyone to make friends and really get to know the campus.
Great for these types of students James Madison is great for anyone who wants to get a good education and have fun doing so. Anyone who comes here can see that this is the most spirited campus, full of friendly and outgoing people. So, if you want to be a part of a very tightly knitted community and have a ton of school spirit, this is the place for you!
Clubs and Activities The clubs here are amazing. Every semester the university holds Student Org Night which is an event for all of the organizations on campus to come and present to students what they're all about. With over 3,000 organizations, anyone can find something that interests them. Even if you don't find anything, you can start an organization yourself!
Campus Safety The campus police are amazing here. I've never felt like I was in any danger. All around campus they have call boxes set up so that if you feel like you're in danger, you just press the button and the campus police will come to you. Also, campus is very well lit, so even at night you can see everything.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning a lot at JMU. I am a Media Arts and Design major. I am loving every minute of all of my classes. I think that the faculty at JMU are understanding. They see where you're coming from and know exactly what to do to get you where you're supposed to be.
I was very scared going into college. I did not like the AP courses I had taken in high school and thought that I would not do well. I was definitely wrong. JMU is a great place. I feel like the professors are trying to get you to learn, and not waste your time doing tedious and useless assignments.
I think any person who applies can learn a lot from JMU.Am enjoying being here What can I say? JMU is one of the happiest campuses in the nation. Everyone at JMU is so down-to-earth and genuinely nice. I love the atmosphere of the surrounding Harrisonburg area as well. I hate being away from JMU. As soon as I go home for breaks, I immediately want to come back. I think that JMU will only enhance people who come here. It definitely did it for me.
Bang for the buck The food is great. Tuition is definitely reasonable. The academics are nice. The facilities are well kept. The JMU pride and support is pleasantly overwhelming. The campus is beautiful--There are great mountain-scapes to gaze at. I made the correct decision choosing JMU. I love it here. I wouldn't have gone anywhere else.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you have a couple ideas of what you want to do before you get there. But, not to worry. There is plenty of general education classes you can take to see what your best fit is. Also, make sure you go to your counselor frequently. Their job is to help you. I have never met anyone here who doesn't like their advisor. Some of my friends believe their advisors are saints.
Great for these types of students Diverse students, business majors, anyone who is undecided, football fans, creative individuals and engineering majors. There is something for everyone at JMU!

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor Many don't realize the academic value found in James Madison. Professors care, even on the Gen'ed levels. One of my Gen'ed history professors, for example, made it a requirement to meet with him more than once during the semester. He taught, at minimum, 300 students that semester, but still made a point to get to know each one to the best of his ability. This helpfulness and outreach is much more common than uncommon with teachers, making the learning environment much more pleasant.
Also, one thing that I feel always goes under the radar is the advisers. As a freshman, you have 3. As you move on in your college career, you are assigned ones specific to your major. They are not only wonderful people, they are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. In comparison to my friends' experiences from several different schools, JMU has a terrific support system for students through staff.Am enjoying being here Hands down, the best experience of my life. Not too much to do in the surrounding area, but the liveliness of campus and the amazing people you will meet more than make up for it.
Bang for the buck Instate, a total steal. Coming from out of state, however, it's more pricey, yet manageable.
Tips for prospective students Smile at people while walking through campus, it's normal. Make laying on the quad a habit. Try new foods on campus, it's all superb. VISIT THE GYM, it's beautiful. And lastly, get out and experience the night life, but remember what the library is for.
Great for these types of students Friendly, down to earth people with a love for knowledge, fun, and experiences.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I recently visited JMU and despite my insistance on not falling in love, I did! I feel that JMU only accepts the best of the best and to be accepted is a true honor. That being said, anyone who plans on attending JMU should expect to be competitive. The only way to really survive at JMU is to learn and hunger for knowledge. Most students are on top of their game and are a constant reminder that you have to do the same. So yes I think you'll learn a lot at JMU DUKES!! Lol
Will enjoy being here Yes! OMG the campus is GORGEOUS. You can expect to get lost once or twice but the campus is great. And I think the food is ranked like #3 in the US or something like that lol. They have many cultural events so EVERYBODY can find someplace where they fit in. And I do mean EVERYONE! The professors for the most part are generally nice and understanding. I think that you'll absolutely love being at JMU!
Bang for the buck The cost to live on JMU's campus in addition to tuition is around 17,000. That's a great price for an education! There's not much debt after graduation and they do work with you financially even if it's arranging loans for you. The meal plan may run you a bit (hey, the food is great!) but other than that you are getting a great education for almost nothing.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Ever since I started at JMU, i began to look at things differently. I was challenged to write in new ways i have never wrote in before in my writing class, and took a global social issues class that started out as a requirement to fill but eventually opened the door to seeing things in a new light. There is so much out there to learn, and JMU is helping me realize that!
Am enjoying being here There are TONS of fun things to do on campus in your free time, and so many people to meet. When you do start to get involved and make friends, you feel more at home and will always have a good time. You see familiar faces walking around campus, and it feels more like a small school. The UPB organization holds concerts, and events, and its fun to go to the quad and hangout. Down town also has some nice food places, and there's a shopper bus that goes to the mall most everyday.
Bang for the buck College is getting pretty expensive these days, but the price is no where near as valuable as the experiences you have on campus. For all the things to do, the fun times with friends, the great education, and all the other great things you get for being a JMU duke, its worth it!
Tips for prospective students Get Involved! There are over 350 organizations on campus, and there is definitely something for everyone.....if not you can create one! I did Make Your Mark On Madison (MYMOM) and i loved it. Its a one time leadership program, and it was better than i expected. Not only that, but i made a ton of great friends which helps with the transition.
Great for these types of students Scholarly. Involved. Loves to have fun. Wants to go to a public school that is growing, but feel like your apart of a small school environment. Loves the Duke Dog! ;)

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor Classes can be challenging but also very hands on and interesting depending upon the professor. There are tons of opportunities to work with professors in a outside of class doing research or volunteering.
Am enjoying being here I love it here! Professors actually take time to learn your name and everyone is so friendly. It's a happening campus, but it's really laid-back. With so many organizations, it's really easy to find your niche on campus.
Bang for the buck In-state tuition is very affordable, class sizes are relatively small (they get smaller as you get into higher level classes), and you're actually taught by professors. The professors are really here to teach you and help you learn to the best of your ability.
Tips for prospective students Apply for the Honors Program! As a freshman you are bottom of the totem pole. That means that you are the last to sign up for classes. However, if you're in the Honors Program, you get priority registration which means you sign up before other students in your credit range. You also get generally smaller class sizes and more invested professors. When selecting classes, take Rate My Professor with a grain of salt.
Great for these types of students Students who are friendly, outgoing, and want to be involved on and off campus should attend JMU. It's a really fun place to be with so many opportunities to further yourself academically as well as socially. Plus, the campus is focusing on environmental stewardship with new eco-friendly buildings.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences JMU is a place where the professors are truly dedicated to preparing their students to be productive, influential members of society. The individuals at this school feel as if they are a family. JMU has enlightened me to be prepared for success.
Tips for prospective students Be the change that you wish to see. There are no boundaries and you can be as successful as you wish to be. JMU is a university of prestige, always remember how proud you should be to attend. Get as involved as possible! The advisors here are great and the students are passionate about making a difference.
Academic Rigor It is difficult, but beyond worth the challenge! What you put in is what you get out. If you dedicate yourself to your studies, you will be absolutely fine!
Dorm Life I loved every single person in my dorm and still, as a Junior, remain in close contact with them. JMU has such great employees that the transition from home to dorm life was smooth and not intimidating.
Food and Dining Our food is the best! Even the 'worst' dining hall at JMU is still delicious!!
What to do for fun Join Greek life or any other organization to get involved! There is so much opportunity here and you would be missing out if you didn't take advantage of all of it. Everyone can find their niche and make life-long friends.
Bang for the buck There is no pricetag on an education from JMU! It is truly priceless. My professors have personal relationships with their students and go out of their way to help them understand and apply material.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a kissing rock and a James Madison statue! The kissing rock is a large rock on our quad where couples who kiss one another are rumored to be married later in life!
Great for these types of students You must be diligent, driven and determined!
Clubs and Activities Greek life is so great and inspirational. People here are so passionate about helping out the community and making a difference. I know that the sports teams are also very respected. Every person here can find a club that they are passionate about with students that share their passion.
Greek Life I am a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma! I absolutely love it! GO GREEK! It has shaped my college experience and helped me to build a confidence and poise that is irreplaceable.
Campus Safety I have never once felt unsafe at JMU! That's a promise! We have campus cadets and constant police force!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences JMU is what I would call the Disney Land of universities. From first glance, it is a beautiful campus with fantastic people, both physically and mentally. Yet, behind the scenes, like Disney, it is a strategic series of difficult tasks that create such a great outcome.
Tips for prospective students A tip for prospective students would be to learn your limits as soon as possible. JMU is a work hard play hard institute. Students here push themselves in the classroom just as hard as they do at the beer bong table. And, always be comfortable with who you are. With 18,000+ students, this small feeling university has so much to offer that there is no need to conform.
Academic Rigor Ranked number one in the nation right now for the Accounting Program, JMU pushes its students just as hard as any private institute. However, unlike a private university or an IVY league, our professors are always there to assist and give us the answers to any questions. There theory is to educate, not fail a student.
Dorm Life The village lacks air conditioning. East campus dorms are amazing and the rest are equally nice. The housing situation is really great.
Food and Dining Ranked as the nations 5th best food, JMU prides itself on options and taste. Between all the places to choose from (over 10) you will never be bored or upset with lunch or dinner. And now, double punching on the weekend is allowed, meaning more food for your week.
What to do for fun With so many organizations and all the assistance you need to join them, there should never be a dull moment at JMU. They want you to get out and have fun.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences james madison university is a very fun and beautiful institution. there are a variety of students yet everyone is friendly. the weekends always have opportunities for people to find parties or other fun activities to destress.
Tips for prospective students try to get the general education classes done first, but don't overload your first semester. also, be prepared to study a lot more than you did in high school because if you don't study more then your grades will drop.
Academic Rigor class difficulty varies depending on the subject and level you are taking. obviously, lower level classes are easier but studying is still a necessity. as long as you study and pay attention in class, you should do fine academically.
Dorm Life east campus dorms are the newest and nicest, but they are out of the way since most freshman classes will be on the quad. however, the bus system makes it easier to get across campus. bluestone dorms, hoffman, and the village are nice as well. the tree houses and lake side are not horrible dorms, but i would put them in last place.
Food and Dining the food at jmu is awesome!! there are a variety of places to eat all across campus, and each have their own type of food. e-hall and d-hall are buffet style, while the other places are more grab and go.
What to do for fun there is a theater on campus that shows relatively new movies or oldies from our childhood for around $2. massanutten resort is 20 minutes away, and you can ski and hike there. clubs and sororities usually have activities, functions, and fundraisers going on on campus that you can go to as well. there is also a small mall and other shops around jmu too.
Bang for the buck campus cookies is a fun and somewhat cheap way to splurge every once in a while. they are the best cookies ever!!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the quad one of jmu's most beautiful features. it is a large grass area right in the middle of a group of class and dorm buildings. a lot of people gather here in between classes or just hang outside in good weather. jmu students have a long standing tradition of holding the door open for other people!!
Great for these types of students jmu is a good university for anyone that wants to come here. friendly, extroverted, and energetic people would do extremely well here.
Clubs and Activities there are a variety of clubs and activities to join. there are intramurals for almost any sport. jmu has a club for basically any interest you could possible have: politics, recreation sports, majors, improv, acting, singing, humanitarian, and many more.
Greek Life jmu has the typical greek sorority and fraternities as well as the honor and academic fraternities. the academic fraternities are a lot of fun and quite prestigious.
Campus Safety campus cadets drive around campus to make sure everyone is safe. they will walk you to your car if you feel unsafe and get you to your dorm safely. campus police and harrisonburg police also patrol the campus and off-campus housing. there are also blue lights all over campus.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot As a freshman you have to take general education classes, but they help you learn where you may want to go if you are undeclared major, or if you are declared they help to expose you to different aspects of learning.
Am enjoying being here I love JMU everyone is friendly and approachable. The campus is gorgeous, yes it gets cold in the winter on the mountain, but if you truly love JMU the cold will not matter.
Bang for the buck The campus is beautiful, a new football stadium, and more new facilities to come. Classes are interesting and most of the professors are very friendly and easy to approach.
Tips for prospective students Focus on classes that will fit toward you major.
Great for these types of students JMU is for friendly, school-spirited students who have lot of energy and great enthusiasm about learning.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This semester, I'm currently enrolled in five classes. Two of these classes are general education courses and the other three count towards my major. I've found that all of my classes are somehow related to each other in some way. Everything I've been taught here so far is so complimentary to each other and can be used in the real world. I feel like I'm more aware about our world and can really be successful later on in life.
Am enjoying being here I love being here because there's always something going on around campus. Almost every night there are tons of organizations hosting cool, free, and safe events for everyone to enjoy. Everyone I've met is so enthusiastic about our school and everyone is so friendly and helpful.
Bang for the buck JMU definitely delivers. Concerning academics, all of my teachers are extremely smart and know what they're talking about. Many of my teachers have had so much experience in their subject and learning from them is an honor. As far as the college experience goes, it's great. JMU is so energetic and the university as well as the students try to hard to host new fun and exciting things to make our college experience one we won't, and don't want to forget.
Tips for prospective students Although JMU is really as fun and exciting as everyone says, it's also challenging. As much as I love my classes, they're also a bit difficult if you don't take them seriously and put in the time needed. Yes, you may be in class for only 15 hours a week or so, but you must be fully committed to putting a lot more time and effort outside of class. This isn't saying you can't participate in other things outside of class, but you certainly will need to learn to adjust and balance your time!
Great for these types of students JMU is great for students who don't mind meeting new people everyday. It's great for open minded students who are willing to try new things that they wouldn't normally try. And it's great for dedicated people devoted to succeeding and becoming a better person.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot This is the only thing that keeps JMU from being my #1 choice, while the campus and atmosphere is great, UVA and other Virginia colleges seem a lot more impressive when it comes to academics.
Will enjoy being here From what I could tell when I visited, JMU is an extremely social school with very friendly students and lots of fun activities. The campus is incredible!
Bang for the buck It's very affordable and they offer lots of scholarships.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you visit, the campus has a specific feel and it might be just right for you! Make sure you take note of certain things though, when I visited I noticed a smaller dorm size and a much higher girl to guy ratio, so make sure you're okay with things like this.
Great for these types of students People who want to meet new friends will have a great time there, and guys might like it a bit more because of all the ladies! It's definitely not a party school, but the campus is very fun and loaded with things to do, and the academics are pretty good as well.

Did enjoy being here Some of the best times of my life were spent at JMU!!! I wish I could go back!
Bang for the buck Although I loved it, it was expensive being out of state. I am currently buried in student loans but I would never trade my experiences!
Tips for prospective students Have fun but don't get too carried away, remember you are there for school
Great for these types of students Fun, outgoing and dedicated

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning so much here! Every one of my professors has had such a passion for teaching and they pass it on the students. I took anatomy and my professor made me love it so much that I applied to be a Teaching Assistant and am currently an anatomy lab TA. I love the classes they offer and find practical uses for what I'm using in my everyday life.
Am enjoying being here The people here are so nice! It's the southern hospitality. People hold doors open for you and bless you when you sneeze. There's also so much school spirit. The school spirit is part of the reason I chose JMU. There's also so much to do here. There's always something to do on-campus. And, not that I can be completely unbiased on this one, but the food is excellent. Take it from me, I work for dining services.
Bang for the buck Sure, the tuition is a bit much when you add in the meal plan and room and board. I wouldn't be applying for scholarships if it were cheap, but honestly, I wouldn't give the experiences I'm getting here up for anything. I'm learning so much and meeting people I wouldn't have met otherwise. I getting wonderful opportunities and taking life chances that enrich my life. When you think about, these memories are priceless and so are the friendships I've made. The tuition looks small when you take all of these things into account.
Tips for prospective students Do everything you can while you're here, especially during your freshman year. College only comes once, make the most of it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors at James Madison Univeristy should not be taken lightly. Do not think you know more than them for a second because they will put you in your place and beat you with experience. If you ask most professors at JMU why they teach, I guarantee all of them mention how they love the student pool and that they enjoy the laid-back lifestyle on campus. The professors are not washouts from real-life careers, they are professionals who are they to help guide you through your own career.
Am enjoying being here James Madison University has such a laid back environment. It was refreshing to leave all the high school drama behind and go to JMU. The campus is beautiful, I will put money on that fact that you cannot find a better looking campus in Virginia. JMU is also very eco-friendly, you will notice the huge recycling program and the biomass powerplant as soon as you walk on campus.
Bang for the buck JMU was voted one of the top colleges for your money. Tuition and all the fees for in-state students will run you about 22k, a fraction of the cost of most colleges in Virginia. If you are out of state, I highly recommend looking into Army ROTC, because if you contract, they will offer you a scholarship AND in-state rates. Contact the ROTC department and ask for the national guard recruiter so you can go SMP!
Tips for prospective students Studying is more important that partying, but you have to relax and have fun nonetheless. Do not let your room-mate bring you down, talk to your RA and get a new one. Do not think that campus police is a bunch of rent-a-cops, they will arrest you, trust me.
Great for these types of students Laid-back, self-disciplined, and open-minded!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot JMU provides a lot of interesting classes for you to take for your General Education credits. I'm a Kinesiology major, but I had the opportunity to take classes like Philosophy and Art History, which are interesting to me. If those classes don't sound enjoyable to you, then there are plenty of other classes to choose from. Also, the professors at JMU really want to help you. They want you to do your best in their class, so they provide plenty of time for you to come see them.
Am enjoying being here The campus is very big, but it really doesn't feel that way. There are so many things for you to do on campus. Like go to Grafton to see a cheap movie. There are also plenty of things to do within walking distance of the school. I felt at home my first day being on campus. Everyone in the JMU community is welcoming.
Bang for the buck Being an out of state student is really hard sometimes. I pay almost double what the in state students do for their education. I do believe I am getting a quality education and receiving many unique experiences I could only get from JMU. But, when the economy is in as poor a state as it is now, paying a lot for college is not easy.
Tips for prospective students Go to Choices before you make your decision. Even if you know that JMU is where you want to go, learning more about your department can really help you have a head start when going into school. Also, if you aren't sure what your major is going to be, Choices provides talk sessions that can help you choose between two majors that your stuck on. Or, it can tell you how you can combine the two.
Great for these types of students JMU is a great place for almost anyone. It has Greek life for the social people, Christian organizations, a lot of musical groups, and many other clubs that help make anyone feel welcome. The entire community is very supportive of all types of people.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot From the school itself and the people I attend it with. James Madison has very highly rated teachers and I learned a lot my freshman year. I know that I can work harder, which will be essential as I continue at this school. It is not easy but it is beneficial.
Am enjoying being here I LOVE this school. I could not see myself anywhere else. I was happy as could be last year and I can not wait to return in the fall. I believe anyone can be happy at JMU because there is a wide range of people and things to do.
Bang for the buck Since I am from New York I have to pay out of state tuition which is a lot of money. It is definitely cheaper to go here if you live in state but I do not regret paying the larger amount to be there; it is well worth my money.
Tips for prospective students GET INVOLVED! There is no better way to make friends at this school than getting involved in something, anything! There are hundreds of clubs and organizations to involved yourself with, you just have to take advantage of them.
Great for these types of students ANY! Anyone can fit in at JMU.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot The curriculum for both the School of Music and the School of Business is wonderful. I can't wait to go and learn about management and performance. I've spoken with JMU students and they have assured me the classes are both challenging and helpful.
Will enjoy being here I've visited the campus and spoken to students, teachers, alumni students, and people who know others who are or were students there. The school spirit is through the roof and everyone is soo nice!!
Bang for the buck JMU is my first choice school, I haven't received any scholarships yet but I will still be leaving college with an incredible education and much less debt than I would if I had attended another school.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I will learn a lot and expect to get into the Study of Media Arts and Design at the school. It's a very competitive program. By the time you graduate though you have practically created a portfolio for yourself and future jobs.
Will enjoy being here I've been at the community college down the road called Blue Ridge and I can tell you one thing for sure is that the night life is crazy but if you want to pass you can't get drawn in to much. I'm going to have to buckle down now that I have finally been accepted.
Bang for the buck I just recently heard that it is one of the cheapest colleges in Virginia. I haven't gone to another school besides community college so I won't waste your time with my word.
Tips for prospective students Get good grades. I had to pull a 3.7 at Blue Ridge and I was still wait listed. It wasn't until they saw my consistency of my last semester that I was allowed to attend.
Great for these types of students It's great for you if you want to do big things with your life. It's a prestigious school and one of the best in VA. It's a big party school as well. I can't tell you how many people I've met, but again don't get caught up in it. It's easy to fail and drop out. My roommates little brother last year got caught up and now he has a year suspension from the school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot JMU students are definitely overshadowed by a lot of the bigger schools in VA. But during my first year here I can say that I absolutely loved it and the teachers. I would have classes that I would not miss for anything because the professors did such a great job teaching and making the students love the material as much as they do.
Am enjoying being here I wasn't sure if I was going to like JMU as much as everyone says they do, but I ended up loving my decision to go there. I have never seen so much school pride and togetherness. Your entire attitude about people changes once you see how nice everyone is.
Bang for the buck JMU is definitely one of the cheapest schools in VA for in-state students and its well worth it. Our food is rated #3 and we are the #1 school in the south.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Here at JMU I feel as if there are classes here for everyone and for every interest. The classes are set up different for every major but grow off of one another. After completing many classes the knowledge I have gain in a year and a half is more than all my years in high school. The teachers make you interested and make you want to keep learning more.
Am enjoying being here Being here is almost being at home. Everyone is so nice and welcoming and you almost never want to leave the JMU bubble. There are so many activities to be involved in, so many opportunities to get out and have fun meet new people. you can ask anyone, you really never want to leave this place.
Tips for prospective students For students coming into JMU, just come in with an open mind. Be willing to meet tons of new people. The biggest tip I could give is to put in the hard work at first because it does pay off. It may be hard at first to get adjusted to life on your own, and time management will be hard, but if you start off strong you'll end strong and have learned all you need to know. Don't worry you still get to have tons of fun while doing it.
Great for these types of students JMU is great for every type of student, we have something here to make everyone feel like they fit in.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classroom ratios are great. Most professors are very knowledgeable and very friendly and will go out of their way to help you out and make sure you are learning the subject material.
Am enjoying being here The campus is beautiful and the food is great! 2 great dining halls(all you can eat locations) one on each side of campus. Plenty of regular little places to eat on the go! Everyone is so nice to lend you a hand if you need help if lost and need directions getting through campus.
Bang for the buck Great tuition rates for in-state students. JMU's College of Business ranks in the top 5% of undergraduate business schools across the country. The food is outstanding!
Tips for prospective students While good SAT scores are great for getting into a great school like JMU, a well rounded resume is just as good if not better. JMU looks for students who take initiative, volunteer in their communities, and are involved with school activities. Make the most out of your high school years and continue with your head held high into the next chapter in your life...college!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences JMU has a beautiful campus. There are many majors to fit any academic pursuit. The nicest people in the world work and attend JMU!
Tips for prospective students Get to know people from your dormmates to professors to the lady making your salad at Market One. Personality and friendliness take you far in life.
Academic Rigor It's there if you want it to be. All of the upper level courses and even some of the lower level ones have been challenging or at least enriching. But we all know there are some easy classes.
Dorm Life Again, it's what you make of it! You have to put yourself out there, but you can meet your friends for life. Even the worst dorms are still really nice, and if you're lucky you will get a really nice dorm. They are all in good locations, close to at least one dining hall and section of classroom buildings.
Food and Dining Our food is consistently ranked in the top 5 by Princeton Review. There are so many dining halls and so many options within those dining halls. All you can eat or a la carte, punch or dining dollars, quiznos or chik fil a (which is going to have milkshakes next year!)... we have it all.
What to do for fun Harrisonburg has a great downtown scene with live music. There are nice hang out restaurants in the area like El Charros and Bdubs. People obviously party and JMU always has shows, concerts and events going on on campus. My favorite concert was when Sara Bareilles came!
Bang for the buck The best in-state option in VA when comparing price to quality of education.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have the kissing rock on the quad. The legend is that the person you kiss there is your true soulmate. We also have an urban legend about the mystery of the tunnels under the school, which have been closed to students since the 1970s.
Great for these types of students Hardworking, outgoing, fun-loving
Clubs and Activities There are clubs and fraternities for EVERYTHING.
Greek Life I'm in a non-Greek fraternity, but I know many people who have joined Greek life and they love it! It is not big enough to rule the social scene of the whole campus, but enjoyable for those who are a part of it.
Campus Safety I feel really safe at JMU. There are blue lights and campus cadets everywhere for when it's dark. The JMU Police have a presence during the day and night but it's not overwhelming.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences James Madison University is so beautiful, amazing, and my dream college. This university has amazing music and science programs that are above and beyond. The students and academics at JMU are superior.
Tips for prospective students Always be aware of your surroundings. There are so many amazing people who will want to brighten your day. Never be afraid to jump out of your comfort zone here.
Academic Rigor JMU offers so many great majors and minors.
Dorm Life Since I will not be attending JMU until the fall, I decided to sleep over with a friend in a dorm one weekday. Dorm life is amazing. So cozy and just a great environment.
Food and Dining JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY HAS THE BEST FOOD. D hall and E hall are DELICIOUS.
What to do for fun JMU has so much to do and so many places to go. It's a huge campus and everywhere you turn you'll see something fun going on. Just jump in and join!
Bang for the buck Every college is expensive, but JMU isn't as much as most colleges and it has so much to offer.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is the kissing rock at JMU. A lot of people propose there, pretty cute.
Clubs and Activities The marching band is GREAT. JMU also has so many sweet clubs!
Campus Safety There are many campus police there to protect the students and faculty of JMU.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences JMU has the most beautiful atmosphere that you could look for in a college. The people there are VERY friendly- pretty much everyone holds the door open for everyone else. JMU overall is a fantastic university.
Tips for prospective students Join a club. Do NOT be afraid to talk to people about the club you are interested in. Reach out to them, everyone is nervous about meeting new people and you'll meet friends easier by joining a club, you already have a common interest!
Also, look on RateMyProfessor.com it is very useful in choosing classes. However, don't believe everything about the professors on it.Academic Rigor General Education classes are definitely more difficult than they should be. As for major courses, it honestly depends on your major. I am a business major and the classes to get into the College of Business are difficult!
Dorm Life Some dorms are nice and air conditioned, some aren't. As a freshman you do not get much say in the matter. You get to choose the general area that you would LIKE to live in, but that does NOT guarantee you are living there. Most juniors and seniors live off campus in apartments that free buses are always going to and from.
Food and Dining JMU has top-notch dining halls. We're number 5 in the country for a reason.
What to do for fun Wal-Mart runs. They really ARE fun with your best friends.
Go see a concert, live event, or a show on JMU's campus. There is almost always something going on.
You can even go camping. It is gorgeous.
Go to UREC! JMU has a climbing wall at UREC as well as a large swimming pool, hot tub and many other facilities there.
Take a stroll around campus. It is beautiful.
Hang out with friends on the Quad- play Frisbee, just hang out, or even nap!Bang for the buck JMU is VERY affordable in state. Out of state, not so much, but you should expect that when you are going out of the state you live in for a college.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is the Kissing Rock. Legend has it that if you kiss someone there, you will marry them.
There also is the bell tower. No one is allowed in there.
Secret underground tunnels. (They're a secret though!)Great for these types of students Anyone looking for a great place to spend 4 years, you will NOT regret it.
Clubs and Activities We have SO many clubs, inter-murals, and activities available to students. Everyone in the clubs are very welcoming. Check out the Club fair at the beginning of the semester to find out about a LOT of JMU's clubs.
Greek Life There are different sororities and fraternities at JMU. Not everyone is in one.
Campus Safety I haven't once felt unsafe on JMU's campus. If any crime is committed, near campus, we get an e-mail about it on our school e-mail address.

Tips for prospective students Be prepared for college life
What to do for fun Bars, clubs, parties. If you're not into that, they have tons of really fun on-campus events. There is a theatre that is amazing with cheap prices! $2.50 for the show, .50 cents for popcorn! Most events are $5 - $25 if they aren't at the movie theatre. There are tons of local swimming holes too!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The kissing rock! Don't kiss on the rock if you can't afford the rock!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The purple & blue rolling hills, lay softly against the background; a cool, crisp breathe of deep mountain air; and the butterflies that flutter in our stomachs- every time we come back. We are a student body, who happily smiles at a stranger and holds the door for absolutely anyone. Sometimes we get a little reckless, out of control at times, but when we come to together- we love with all that we are.
Tips for prospective students Come to college with an open mind, forget about all the cliques and social norms of high school. This is a fresh start to become a whoever you want to be- hopefully you will remember to be yourself. These will be the funnest, and the most difficult times in your life- but it is worth every second. The first semester- will make you feel totally in over your head, definitely homesick, and maybe even a little awkward at first. But, you'll make it through, and you'll begin to finally understand who you are. The best part: you're going to meet life long friends who aren't going to judge you for the mistakes you've made- instead they'll be laughing right beside you. Heartache and sadness will be inevitable- but after everything; it becomes apparent that you're all in the same boat. Although, your family won't be there to always comfort you- try to keep in mind, that your family is right in front of you. Your friends and the people you surround yourself with- will become your new family while you're away at college.
Academic Rigor News flash, JMU is not just some awesome party, the entire time. Monday through Thursday, should spent wisely doing homework and studying. Your adviser isn't kidding when they say spend 2 hours of studying, for every 1 hour spent in class.
*Remember this: when you see your friends going out every single night- and you feel like you're like you're missing out... 95% of time you're not missing anything. Sometimes students forget, that the only person making sure you get to class, complete quizzes, assignments, exams... is you. Its most certainly not your friends, parents, or professors; so don't let yourself get caught up. Besides, by the second semester (if the habitual party goer makes it)- they're almost guaranteed not to return next year.Dorm Life small, but do have shared suites.
Food and Dining Any and every type of cuisine you can imagine- most of the dining halls are pretty unhealthy (...absolutely delicious, but fattening). Fortunately, we do have a few health orientated type dining halls that you can go to instead!
What to do for fun Other than James Madison's infamous party life, there are a few things around town that most students never check out. (Late summer/early spring): swimming & rock jumping at Blue Hole- also, apartment complex pools. (Fall/spring): hiking the Appalachian Trails. (Winter): Massanutten ski resort 30 minutes away. (Year round): Intramural sports, clubs & orgs., billiards/lounge/ipad rentals at TDU...the list goes on.
Bang for the buck The College of Business- Yes.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Not really unusual, but:
Springfest... only every 3 years though, after the 2010 Springfest riots, JMU police shut it down pretty quickly.
Game days or days of remembrance: Purple out- all the students wear their JMU purples to support.Great for these types of students Great for any type of student... JMU is more diverse than you'd think. It's really not, just a bunch super skinny, beautiful sorority girls running around. However, that's not to say there isn't a handful of them out there (and same goes for a few of douchey fraternities guys). Lucky, the Greek life, only makes up a small % of the school; so there isn't that much pressure to really join. Apartment parties are how most JMU kids socialize, it just really depends on the crowd you hang out with. For the most part, the students are very laid back, friendly and open to new people, honestly: JMU students just downright like to have a good time. You'll never go to a party and expect to pay a cover charge or have to worry about knowing the right people there. That's more Greek nonsense; hence why the majority of the students choose not to join- Sadly, a lot of those kids really live in their own little worlds.
Clubs and Activities They've got every club you can think of... my favorite (the snowboarding club!) but if there isn't a club- JMU encourages its students to create their own!
Greek Life Like I said, only a small % of total student body actually makes up the Greek life. You have all your basic, stereotypical types of sororities and fraternities. Some of them are actually really cool people, I guess you could say it's really all about how you choose to act.
Campus Safety Very, very, safe. The only sketchy parts of Harrisonburg, are the outskirts of the school, and you should never walk down Port Republic Rd. alone. For the most part, all the students are very approachable people. The campus size is really a perfect size, people and professors sense when something is wrong with their peers- I'm not criticizing larger universities like Virginia Tech, but b/c it is such a big school- it would be impossible to monitor every student/faculty/member there. Inevitably, some people go through college never interacting with any one else. I'm not saying, that this probably doesn't happen at JMU- I'm sure it does. However, I feel it is somewhat more difficult to hide serious problems. The JMU police, does a really good job of patrolling the campus throughout the nights & weekends as well.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences JMU is the friendliest campus I've ever been to! Everyone is so nice and open, and you always run into people you know, even though it's a big school. The atmosphere is great, there are so many ways to get involved on campus, and our academics are very competitive as well, making JMU super well-rounded! I LOVE it here!!!!
Tips for prospective students Don't worry about your major-you'll have plenty of time to think about what you want to do and take a few classes to see what you like. Go to choices if you're even thinking about coming here!!! It's a great event and really sold me. Attend student org night your first month of being here so you can see all of the awesome clubs and organizations there are!
Academic Rigor There are some easy classes, but definitely some challenges ones. College anywhere is nothing like high school, but JMU really challenges you in most of your classes. Gen-eds are kind of a joke, and you kind of just have to get them out of the way, but don't take them lightly and STUDY, STUDY, STUDY outside of class! Read your textbooks-it really helps! And go over your notes even when there's not a test coming up.
Dorm Life I loved living in the village my freshman year in Weaver Hall, it was an awesome experience. I would recommend living in the village because of the awesome location right in the middle of campus! There are nicer dorms, but the location is everything. And not having AC in the summer really isn't that bad, it's manageable with a fan!
Food and Dining OUR FOOD IS AMAZING!!!! Everywhere else I've ever visited, their food was so sub par compared to ours. I don't even mind not getting to eat home-cooked food anymore, because of how good the food is here. It's so great, and having dining dollars for Starbucks is the best things ever!
What to do for fun There are a lot of people that party here, but I don't, and I still have SO much fun on the weekends and during the week! Especially the next morning when I don't have a hangover :) There are some really cool nature type things around the area, if you're into that on the weekend, and there are so many ways to get involved besides partying, you don't need to go out on the weekends to have fun!
Great for these types of students EVERYONE!!!!!!!! I've never met anyone that didn't love going here!
Clubs and Activities My favorite club that I'm involved in on campus is Campus Crusade for Christ. It's an awesome organization that really reaches out to the rest of the campus and allows your to meet fellow Christians on campus that love Jesus as well! The people in Cru are so genuine and loving, it's a great place to be.
Greek Life Our greek life isn't the biggest, and we do have our fratty frats and not-so-nice sororities, but not everyone in greek life is bad! Lambda Chi is a great fraternity if you're a guy thinking about rushing! They're an awesome group of guys that are really down to earth and joined a fraternity for the right reasons, not just to party.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences james madison has a lively community and a wonderful campus. the food is great and there are a ton of options for academics as well. some dorms are not equal in quality but they all have their positive and negative aspects.
Tips for prospective students my tip for prospective students is to try and take as many college level courses as you can in high school to knock some classes out of the way. it will help a ton.
Academic Rigor so far almost all of my classes have been fairly easy, but i am also a determined and disciplined student. i have no problem setting aside a few hours of my day every day to do my schoolwork first. biology is hard, well it is just a lot of information. my other classes are easy.
Dorm Life the dorms are not necessarily great, but you make a lot of new friends in your halls and suites. be friends with these people and get to know them. they are going to be your family for the year.
Food and Dining there are many options and most of them taste really good. as far as healthy food there are a couple of choices but not a ton.
What to do for fun harrisonburg has a lot in a small area. downtown there are a ton of little restaurants and cool little places to hang out and just spend time with friends. there is a movie theater, on and off campus, and a mall right down the road from jmu. there is also skyline drive and many places to hike and ski nearby.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences james madison university is located in one of the most beautiful places i have ever seen. the scenery is amazing and the school itself has a great campus. every one who comes here is extremely friendly, including the professors.
Tips for prospective students definitely visit the campus in order to see if you like it. it would be nice to drop in on a class to see one of the many teaching styles that professors possess.
Academic Rigor studying is definitely necessary but it is easy to build great study skills. you must earn your grades but the outcomes are extremely rewarding.
Dorm Life the dorms range in comfort levels depending on where you are located. in general, the dorms are all comfortable and bathrooms are readily available. there are kitchens in all dorm buildings. in addition, the dorms contain recreation rooms in which there is a tv and some dorms have pool tables.
Food and Dining i have never had food as great as campus food. there are so many choices to pick from and they are all fantastic. the dining facilities are only a few minutes away from academic buildings and this makes it easy to grab and go as you please.
What to do for fun urec is an amazing facility that is located on the east side of campus. it contains excellent free weights and weight machines. in addition, there is a hot tub, pool, and sauna. there are also opportunities to sign up for group fitness classes that are fun. jmu also has a lounge named taylor down under that contains couches and tables. many people explore downtown, go for a jog, join clubs, or go to one of the various hang out spots on campus.
Bang for the buck jmu is not as expensive as other colleges in the area. the cost of tuition as well as room and board is definitely worth the experience. people love it here and it is sad once it is time to leave jmu.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus currently, we have a student who dresses up as james madison and we call her james madison girl. she speaks and acts as if she is james madison. it is quite entertaining.
Great for these types of students this school is ideal for students who enjoy having fun but are also extremely dedicated to school work.
Clubs and Activities there are numerous amount of clubs here at jmu. it is very unlikely to not find a club that is of interest to you simply because there are so many options.
Greek Life there are various sororities and fraternities on campus. they range from social, cultural, major-based, and religion. they are all rewarding and have a lot to offer.
Campus Safety it is very likely to walk through campus after a long night at the library but it is extremely safe here. there are call posts all over campus just in case there is an emergency. in addition, we have campus cadets that patrol the grounds.

Tips for prospective students don't be pressured into choosing a major too fast, you'll be fine. talk to lots of people in the first week; it will be useful to have lots of acquaintances at first to choose who you want to hang with and what you want your image to be. be prepared to study!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Friendly community of people who are interested in being successful in the future. A great place to go and get away from the big city and have a small town feel as well.
Tips for prospective students Take everything seriously in class and do not get caught up in the parties. Yes, this is a party school, but the college experience is what you make of it.
Academic Rigor Depending upon the program you get involved with. There is something for everyone and every level.
Dorm Life LOVED living in the dorm. Wish I had made the decision to live there more than one year.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot James Madison is not only a great school for those of us who don't want to be 'one in three hundred' in our classes. While some General Education, Gen Ed, classes are large, many teachers make the effort to know their students. With one semester down and seven to go, I'm ready to get an education.
Am enjoying being here Yes, I'll admit to being that one person who just can't get enough of being part of the Marching Band. Call me crazy but it's like having a family of over 450 people! Loving parents, great older siblings, and then the siblings you can't stand- everyone has a place!
The people here rock. Students will hold the doors open for one another and, for the most part, don't give disapproving stares to people who don't seem to 'fit in,' and the secret is diversity.Bang for the buck I'm not exactly how financials work because I'm a lazy slacker so all I can say is it's easier to be in state than out of state. There are still plenty of takers to the larger bill, again everyone has a place.
Tips for prospective students Never be afraid to ask someone if they have their Mappy or if they know where a certain building is! (A Mappy is a pocket map given to freshman, it's got the names of every building and some other helpful information!)
You don't have to party to enjoy yourself- no one is forcing your hand when it comes to these things and if you feel uncomfortable with going somewhere, stay in and watch a movie!
Also, if you do go out and happen to get drunk and wander home; the shower is not the place to deposit the contents of your stomach. Likely you're sharing with 3- 20 other people and no one wants to see what you had for dinner.
Your RA is there to help you, no matter how useless they may seem at first. If you have a problem with another resident, tell them immediately because that student who is keeping you awake at night may be in violation of quite a few rules.Great for these types of students Those who;
Want a good education without being one of many,
Enjoy meeting new people,
Don't mind sharing a shower,
Need an environment that they can grow in as an adult.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot At the University of James Madison, founded in 1908, I, Joshua Roach am being transformed and molded by the renewing of my mind every semester I enroll for courses at the mighty Madison. Focusing on Law, while majoring in Justice Studies, my american tools are sharpened in the class rooms of my minor, Political Science. Focusing on eighteenth century philosopher's such as Socrates, Thoreau, Aristotle, and Tolstoy. I try to model their efforts to society by volunteering in the elementary and middle schools, mentoring and tutoring high school students, public speaking for peace, planning and participating in vigils for the memory of 9/11, and participating in the James Madison University, Moot Court.
Am enjoying being here James Madison University is not the place to be socially with an average student population of 17,000 students. While their I have found and made great relationships. However, the dynamics of a rural setting are comparable to many settings at James Madison University. Therefore, with aspirations of attending a University in an Urban area, I cannot say that my aspirations of a busy city life where achieved. However, I can say after hiking and climbing mountains, building and riding mountain bike trails, and becoming consistently involved with a country side community, my perspectives of a collegiate institution, located in a rural community, has been enlightened to stay and reside.
Bang for the buck Students residing inside the state of Virginia will receive a good bang for their buck. However, residing outside of Virginia and paying out of state tuition for the University of James Madison with student loans can be costly. With loan percentages increasing the average out of state student will be one hundred thousand dollars in debt before their completion of undergrad. This institution is not worth one hundred thousand dollars of debt, no university is.
Tips for prospective students James Madison University is a great university. Socially it is predominately white. Parties are great relievers of class room stress and females are 99.9 percent safe from danger. There are many things to do outside of campus in Harrisonburg Va. However, they are mostly things you would do in the wilderness, outside.
Great for these types of students Theatre Students.
Political Science, students of law.
Technology and research students.
Education Students, Teachers.
Philosophy/Religion
