Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot It goes without saying that every learning institution has its share of poorly-coordinated, poorly-tempered, or just poor quality instructors. Even though Los Angeles Pierce College is no exception, the amount of knowledgeable, organized, well-mannered, and dedicated professors far outweighs the rare poorfessor; the marine biology program at Pierce College is particularly lauded, and, speaking from personal experience, it is my opinion that Dr. Wells is one of the best professors I have ever had.
Am enjoying being here I really enjoy how the atmosphere at Pierce is very laid-back and placid; rushing, tension, and stress are practically nonexistent here. Though some view Pierce as a place of last resort, this sort of thinking only bolsters elitism and sets one up for an eventual fall. Attending Pierce allows those yearning for a second chance to become humble and even more diligent, and in doing so, steadily rise to the top.
Bang for the buck The hot word of the year appears to be recession, and the word is impacting Los Angeles Pierce College pretty significantly, as unit prices have tripled from $20 each to $60 each. Though this raising of prices is very drastic for some, the overall tuition is still negligible compared to most private, and even most public universities. If you play your cards right, then you will receive a university-level education at a community college price.
Tips for prospective students To the majority of freshmen who are either thinking about or deciding to attend, whether it be because of financial need or because college applications did not work out very well, I wholeheartedly believe that Los Angeles Pierce College will not disappoint you. Pierce continues to expand and grow to this day and will undoubtedly further its reputation as one of the best community colleges to transfer out of in California; make the resources provided here a stepping stone to greater opportunities in the future.
Great for these types of students Los Angeles Pierce College does attract some lackluster students who seem to just laze around in life, but the majority of the student populace is filled with individuals who know what they want to do/where they want to be, and who know how to take advantage of the opportunities at Pierce to their fullest in order to achieve their goals.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pierce College is just as good as any other college. There are great teachers there that provide you with the same education you can get elsewhere for much less! It is the smart choice for anyone who wishes to save money without forsaking education.
Tips for prospective students Don't be too discouraged if it is hard to get classes. It is actually not as bad as people say it is--but you must be persistent if it comes down to crashing courses. Don't do the shopping for classes thing when you add a bunch of classes and then pick and choose which one you want and which you can drop, because you are still robbing someone else of the opportunity to be in the class. Pierce College is still college, so buy your books (used books are GREAT!) , do your homework, and aim for success!
Academic Rigor Any stereotype regarding junior colleges being less than average is not true. If anything, what makes community colleges so great is the fact that they allow people of lesser means to obtain the education they want without having to break the bank. There are amazing teachers there that are just as qualified to teach as the teachers at four-year school.
Dorm Life There are some apartments up for rent on the outskirts of the campus, but they are not part of the school.
Food and Dining There are several food carts parked around the campus, so students can have the choice between different kinds of foods that are actually not that expensive. The Freudian Sip Cafe is a small little joint that offers some food, like sandwiches, sushi, bagels, croissants, etc., along with your daily fix of caffeine, and is also very reasonably priced.
What to do for fun There aare several things you can do around campus, the least of which is to go to the Music Department's concerts and the Drama performances! The location of the college allows us to have our own little hiking trail and farm. So if you feel like taking a walk, you can do either one! (Just make sure you bring water, and you have some time to spare.) There are also plenty of events hosted by the student council, and endless of clubs to join.
Bang for the buck At $46/unit (as of Fall 2012), you are definitely getting your dollar's worth any way. If money is tight, there is still some financial aid, and you can always buy used textbooks or rent them--the school bookstore offers both.
Great for these types of students It's great for those who are on a tight budget, or are working part time or full time.
Clubs and Activities There are endless clubs you can join, or you can create your own! The Welding Club is the latest addition to the list, joining the K Circle, Jewish Club, and dozens of others!
Campus Safety Along with the construction renovations that are going on in the school, camppus safety has greatly improved over the last few years, making Pierce a better, safer place than ever. There's a sheriff's station on the edge of campus, and the officers are constantly driving up and down the school's roads.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pierce College is full of amazing teachers. I feel like I got a four year school education here at a community college price. It's honestly the best community college in the area and if you're dedicated, you can get a truly enriching experience.
Tips for prospective students Don't believe the smack talk that snooty people say about this school. They have no idea what they're missing. And if your high school teacher says anything negative about it--I'd be willing to bet they're just jealous they couldn't get hired there. There are a few mediocre teachers at Pierce (like any school) but the majority are caring, passionate, and wise folks. Also, make sure you nag the counseling office until you get all the information you need for transferring (because they don't just hand it to you--you need to ask questions, ideally in your first semester).
Academic Rigor Some classes are easy, some require a little more work. It's easy to find out what you're in for though through ratemyprofessor.com (almost all the professors have been rated multiple times). Most of them are academically enriching though.
Food and Dining Freudian Sip has got some good coffee, and if you're into cheesy pop songs from the 90's (i.e. Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls) you'll enjoy the atmosphere.
What to do for fun There are a lot of clubs, but it's really an academically focused school since the ultimate goal is to help you transfer as quickly as possible.
Bang for the buck Best deal in California education.
Great for these types of students Students who are: self-motivated, goal-oriented, and genuinely interested in learning and self-improvement.
Clubs and Activities Join sociology club! It's headed by some brilliant professors.
Campus Safety Good lighting at night, laid-back student population, sheriff on campus...I've never felt unsafe here.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences As a community college in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, L.A. Pierce College is located in a central location to the many shops, malls, the beach, and downtown Los Angeles. L.A. Pierce provides numerous majors for those who want their associate degree and for those who want to transfer to a four-year university such as UCLA or CSUN. However, due to budget cuts, obtaining the classes needed to transfer is the greatest burden of attending this college.
Tips for prospective students Plan early and be prepared to compete with numerous of other students trying to take the same classes you need to graduate or transfer.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor is not as intense as a four-year university, but one may choose to be the Honors program which is more intense. However, balancing school with work or other activities may be a challenge in maintaining a high GPA at L.A. Pierce. It is honestly easier than high school for most because classes are based on a semester system so it is at a faster pace than high school for most, but at a slower pace than colleges on the quarter system.
Dorm Life L.A. Pierce is a community college so almost all students commute from all over Los Angeles.
Food and Dining A new cafeteria is being constructed and will open for the Fall of 2012. Food is available at the student store, food trucks, and cafe. The cafe food is somewhat overpriced for the quality but it is a convenient option for many students.
What to do for fun There are many clubs one can join and meet other students. There is also many fun activities located in the Los Angeles area such as the beach or amusement parks.
Bang for the buck This school has a excellent tuition so that students can save money before the transfer to a prestigious university such as UCLA. The books are quite expensive which is typical for most colleges. However, prices for tuition has been increasing steadily over the past couple years.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a lot of construction occurring right now so many classrooms are not accessible right now.
Great for these types of students For those who did not accepted to the university of their choice after high school, L.A. Pierce allows many to have an increased chance on attending many of the universities in California.
Clubs and Activities The is a student body called ASO and a honor society called Alpha Gamma Sigma Pi.
Campus Safety This is located in a safe suburban neighborhood in which police and security is present. However, there should be more lighting during the evening.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Pierce College is a great starter for those straight out of high school who either need more time to make decisions on four-year colleges or majors, or are not ready to take on the financial stress of a four-year college education. Despite the recent tuition hikes, it's relatively affordable as compared to nearby four-years such as CSUN. The recent renovations have also made it a beautiful and very enjoyable campus to stroll around, making it much more enjoyable and motivating to go to class each day.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to get all your financial aid materials together because with any sort of financial aid, an education at Pierce can be very affordable. It's also important to set a goal while attending Pierce, whether it's obtaining an Associate's or transferring to a four-year or a vocational school--keep track of your GE's and other courses required for your major in order to make your stay as short as possible, as it will certainly save you money and time. While keeping priorities in mind, also take an intersession or a semester to try out a class of your interest--community college is all about experimenting, and Pierce offers a wide arrange of classes that are worth trying and may pique your interest. And a final note, before registering for classes, always compare the prospective professors on ratemyprofessor.com first, as some professors at Pierce are definitely better than others.
Academic Rigor The difficulty of classes always depend on the person's capabilities, interests, and his or her major. In my case, I compared my experience in Pierce classes to those back in high school, and since I've taken multiple AP courses, I don't see as much challenge in Pierce classes as compared to the rigor I had to endure back in high school. However, a handful of professors do require a sufficient amount of work to be done in the student's part in order to pass a class. It's not recommended to go soft when taking a class with an easy professor because you'll never know when you'll get a much more demanding one--each professor has different teaching methods, after all. Overall, I'd say Pierce College has classes that are just as rigorous as regular or Honors high school courses--they demand just enough from the student in order to achieve in the course.
Dorm Life Pierce College is a community college, so no dorm experiences can be shared.
Food and Dining The cafeteria leaves a bit more to be desired. The food isn't as dull as burger, fries, and pasta--they do have an interesting-enough selection to choose from, but the quality and taste of the food is just as comparable as to your high school cafeteria's. If there is anything from the Pierce cafeteria that I actually like, it's the chicken tortilla soup. Aside from the school cafeteria, they also have food trucks that stay around the campus ranging from Mexican street food to barbecued goods. If the cafeteria doesn't quite appeal to you, you can always turn to the food trucks, which usually doesn't fail to satisfy.
What to do for fun There are a number of clubs and organizations of multiple interests available for your enjoyment at Pierce College. Other than that, there is a large shopping center complete with a few good restaurants just a bus ride down the street.
Bang for the buck Despite the recent tuition hikes, as compared with nearby colleges such as CSUN, Pierce is definitely affordable, especially if you have your financial aid done and regularly updated.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Los Angeles Pierce College is an amazing school filled with friendly and dedicated professors who will go beyond to give their students the education they need. This School also has counselors, health offices, and what not for all students who need that extra boost. Although Pierce College can use some remodeling for bigger class rooms, this school is perfect for any student who wants to achieve in life.
Tips for prospective students As any student entering a college or university, they should be aware that it is up to the student to keep tract of their schedules at all times. Nobody will be pushing you to get good grades like counselors at high schools do. Self motivation will be the number one tip for a student entering college.
Academic Rigor This issue is everywhere; some students do well in school while other tend not to. I believe it is the students responsibility to do well if they want to succeed. As of reviews, I have noticed Los Angeles Pierce College has pretty high rates on transferring rates; therefore, academic rigor should be a plus!
Dorm Life There is no Dorms available at Pierce College; therefore living with the parents and or living with a friend(s) will be the choice to go with. I think that dorms at Pierce College would be a great thing to have; maybe students will study more and feel that they have a purpose since they will be close to school.
Food and Dining Food is not that great at Los Angeles Pierce College. It has a mini Cafe where students can get the basic drinks, and a few actual foods such as pizza, bagels, sandwiches, and hot wings. If it had fast food restaurants, it would be awesome! There are couple restaurants not far from the school students go to because of the poor food and dining; if not that, students simple bring their own lunch

Bang for the buck For $26 dollars a unit you get so much especially in the horse science department! I am taking a 16 week riding class and it only cost me $26. If I was taking lessons at a riding barn it would be over $500! That is serious bang for your buck!

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot You'd be surprised how many quality professors have dedicated themselves to this community college. Theres a few gems in every department, most definitely. Class sizes are small, and now that I'm at a UC I actually think the large class sizes are are really detrimental to my learning process. Regardless of whether or not your professor has a Pulitzer or studied at Harvard, being able to have one-on-one conversations with your educator is crucial.
Did enjoy being here There's definitely a climate of rejection and under achievement, people seem to accuse each other of being at the community college level because they 'couldn't go anywhere else.' Too many people think being at Pierce is already a mark of failure. I graduated from Pierce with a two year degree in exactly two years and I am beyond thrilled about my time there, but I know its not the case for everyone. I definitely had fun, and I definitely made life-long friendships. The trick is to not see it as a dead end, because it isn't one.
Bang for the buck This is the REASON I went to Pierce. With financial aid assistance, I was almost making money off of being there. I was able to save up some money to keep myself comfortable and plan out my UC expenses with the money I was able to save by going to Pierce. Definitely the cheapest education you can get, and with its tremendous transfer rate, you have to wonder why so many people AREN'T going to Pierce.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused, don't think of Pierce as being a mark of failure. And remember, the two years it takes to transfer also turn into a degree. If you're your at Pierce as part of the vocational programs, don't let the academic kids stress you out; While Pierce might not be the best 'academic' school, it's really on it about its vocational programs and is one of the best schools in the state for Equestrian Medicine, as shown by their decently sized on-campus fields and stables. Basically, remember that this is another step in your life, not the end of the line.
Great for these types of students Broke students, students looking for vocational programs, students that don't want to 'waste' money at another school just to take their GE or figure out their major, and anyone that wants a low-risk learning environment.
