Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot Reading from other reviews, I know I'll learn a lot, not only in Illustration, but in other forms of art too. They have an awesome Foundations program, and just by reading the curriculum, I know I'm going to learn more and more about art.
Will enjoy being here Even if I haven't visited the campus yet, my cousin lived in Maine, and toured the campus when she was a sophomore in high school. She's told me of a lot of great things about the Portland area. The Portland district is great for eclectic artists because of the unique shops, the diversity, as well as the coastal area.
Bang for the buck It may be a little pricey, but compared to other art schools, MECA is on the cheaper side.
Tips for prospective students Get your portfolio started soon! I started my portfolio last year (junior year), even then, I was too busy to complete it this year (senior year). Also, make sure to include WHAT YOU ARE GOOD AT, rather than showing works of multiple mediums. Oh, and include an adequate amount of still lives/life drawings too. Moreover, pay attention to your grades, even if they may not be perfect, maintaining an okay GPA will have your chances increase. Join as many art clubs, take as many art classes as you can, but most importantly have fun with your high school career.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Maine College of art is a great school. Their facilities and professors are excellent. Although I've only been there a year, this school has helped my skill set tremendously.
Tips for prospective students At times the work load can be overwhelming, but don't worry. As long as you spread it out you'll be fine. Make sure you don't miss a lot of class. Even missing one class and you can easily fall behind on a lot. Make sure to be aware of that. Teachers can only be so generous.
Academic Rigor Each night I have plenty of work to do. Basically I work around the clock, however it's very rewarding in the sense that you are getting more experience and learning new things along the way. If you ever need help, any of the professors are more than willing to sit down with you to give you the help you need.
Food and Dining Food and dinning is pretty good. There is always a vegetarian alternative and the food is very healthy.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do around Maine College of Art. Since its located right in the middle of Portland there is always something going on. The city has art fairs and parades right outside our front door! The civic center is only a few steps away if you are interested in concerts or going to see a hockey game. There are plenty of shops and restaurants as well. It is perfect for an art student because there are tons of galleries all throughout Portland.
Great for these types of students If you are passionate about art and love a tight knit community, this is the place for you. Maine College of Art makes sure it's students are involved with the community. Because of the small size of the school, you are really able to become close to the professors. They are able to help you frequently and really care about how you do in their class.
Clubs and Activities Since it is such a small school there are limited clubs, but they do have some. The nice thing about how small the school is that if you have an idea for a club you are welcome to make it official and start one!
Campus Safety The campus is very safe. The only thing to watch out for are the bums on the streets. They usually don't bother anyone but occasionally they will ask for spare change.
