    Am learning a lot

I am a high school student dual-enrolling at NIC, and its been a fine experience. I have learned most from my elective classes rather than the core classes. In my history class, for example, I haven't learned much. However, I have learned A LOT from my psychology and communications classes. It depends a lot on your attitude towards the class.

    Am enjoying being here

It's an awesome experience for me, as a high schooler, to be able to attend a college and get the feel for the college. It's an easy way to get some of the experience that I'll have in a few years. Also, the teachers are all great and don't treat the vast numbers of high schoolers as high school students, but rather as actual college students.

    Bang for the buck

It's great to earn college credits for such a low price, and while still in high school. Also, its in such a great location! The beach is literally just across the street from the campus, and downtown Coeur d' Alene is just a quick walk away. It's in a great spot for being so low-priced

    Tips for prospective students

Just make sure you go to your classes and keep an open mind. They don't tolerate attitudes. Also, if you're not from the North Idaho area, we can tell. A lot of people tend to be discriminatory towards people that don't live here, so just be wary of that. Also, don't let the winters get to you. The summers are so worth it!

Great for these types of students

Dual-Enrolling students, students from North Idaho, students who enjoy outdoor activities or beautiful scenery, incoming freshman who are looking for an easy transition between high school and other Idaho schools

    Academic Rigor

that pretty much sums it up right there: i am learning a lot!

    Am enjoying being here

This campus is right on the Coeur 'D Alene Lake, and the scenery is outstanding. North Idaho College has a great atmosphere (I mean both the air and the people). The staff is so helpful,

    Bang for the buck

the prices may appear differently to people in different financial situations, but this college has a much lower tuition than major universities and you still get the basics you need for associate degrees. in any case, i recommend that you apply for financial aid, even if you don't really need it. i received enough awards in grants to completely pay for my tuition and books. look for discounted sources to by textbooks and materials from instead of the college bookstore. you will save a lot of money! lab manuals are created and printed at the college, though, so you can buy those only at the college bookstore (which is known as the mica peak exchange). do not get student loans! ever! look for scholarships and grants, apply for financial aid, or ask relatives for college money, but do not get loans to pay for college! i know several people who have worked hard their entire adult lives to pay back the loans they had for school. if you can't find a means to pay for it without a loan, then don't go to college. period. :) it's for you're own good and the good of your family.

    Tips for prospective students

register early! do not wait until the last minute, or you may not get into the classes you want. there is a waitlist now (as of the fall 2011 semester), but it's better to get in early than squeak in at the last chance.
also, if you are planning on applying for financial aid, do so several months before the semester begins. then you will have enough time to gather documents needed, and the college will have time to process it and contact you about further documentation, et cetera.

parking is an issue when the semester begins, but a lot of the busyness dies down after awhile. but, there are parking lots up the road, about a 10-15 minute walk, so just come to class early and park there.

Great for these types of students

    students looking to earn a 2-year degree (a.a., a.s., a.a.s.).
local students who want some secondary education 'under their belt'.
students interested in a solid nursing program.

    Will learn a lot

I learned a lot already as a dual enrolled student and plan to learn even more as I enjoy the courses I'll be taking to get my degree in Social Work

    Will enjoy being here

I love the scenery and the close proximity to the lake for a nice, quiet study session.

    Bang for the buck

There is the movies close by, the lake, downtown shopping malls, parks, fairs, and all sorts of things that take place close to North Idaho College. Definitely worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be scared. It's an environment that you can set to the pace that you want to go. If you wanna speed right to your degree and think you can handle the challenge then North Idaho College is perfect. If you want to lay back and take time to get your degree this North Idaho College is perfect.

Great for these types of students

All types of students can come here. The students around campus are very open minded and interested in all sorts of cultures, games, music, activities etc that it won't be hard to make new friends.

    Am learning a lot

I have really appreciated NIC especially because it is smaller, so you actually can get to know teachers and get the help that you need. I have gone in to ask teachers to explain a concept to me, and they have been very helpful in answering my inquiries.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the small town atmosphere and seeing people that I know each time I walk on campus. The learning environment is very good and most of the teachers really want to help you succeed if you are willing to put in an effort.

    Bang for the buck

As a North Idaho resident, this is your best option if your looking for inexpensive and flexible. When I was in high school I really didn't want to go to NIC because it seemed to be less prestigious then other schools, however, they have good programs and don't charge much...housing in the area is affordable as well. All in all, it's a very good bang for your buck.

    Tips for prospective students

If you care about your classes you can find the help you need to succeed. The tutoring center as some really good resources no matter how old you are or what your academic background is. The good news is, if you do well in a class, the college may hire you to be a tutor as well!:-) You will get the education you need if you go with a good attitude, wanting to learn.

Great for these types of students

This is a great school for anyone living in the area, especially if you need to hold a job or take care of things outside of your college education. It is good to get started if your coming straight out of high school, but it is especially good for anyone in the workforce or anyone who has family they need to care for.

A fantastic atmosphere of learning at the Community College level. I am a non-traditional student in my second year at NIC after taking a nearly thirty year hiatus. I find the instructors to not only be extremely knowledge about their subjects, but are also highly attainable whenever you are in need of extra help in any course.

    Tips for prospective students

If you live in the great Northwest, North Idaho College is a splendid way to begin your college career. It has an beautifully located campus on the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Very friendly student atmosphere and incredibly knowledgeable staff and professors.

    Academic Rigor

The courses at NIC are rigorous and challenging, but NIC offers many tutors available to all students on campus free of charge.

    Food and Dining

The have a great Culinary Arts that also serves lunch to the public three days a week. Their food is incredibly delicious and reasonably priced. I eat there as often as possible. In the Student Union Building, they offer a wide variety of foods, from a salad bar to a full grill, with hamburgers and sandwiches.

    What to do for fun

Endless possibilities. There are many clubs available on campus as well as the Outdoor Pursuits program that involves all winter sports as well as summer sports. Our athletic departments are very competitive. Our Women's Basketball team just won the championship last season. Our Women's Volleyball team has also won a championship for their division.

    Bang for the buck

NIC is very affordable to attend and as far as a Junior College it has a rigorous academic plan that surpasses many other community colleges around the country. It is an all around wonderful beginning for your college degree, even at any age. 40% of our students are over 35.

    Clubs and Activities

Many club opportunities available, from Phi Theta Kappa's Honor society to American Indian Culture, Latino Culture, Gay Straight Alliance and many more to choose from.

    Campus Safety

The Campus at NIC is very safe. It is located in a small town of 35,000 population on the shores of the lake. I have never encountered any problems, with anyone on the campus and haven't heard of any issues on campus.

coeur d'alene is a great city for a college, and the campus is situated in an excellent part of town with a beach and a bit separated from the main city. north idaho college is a relatively small campus with lots of opportunities to connect with new people and new academics. the academics is a little impersonal unless your from larger places i imagine it would seem very personal where the professors do make an effort to make you a name and not a number, overall nic in my opinion is an above average college in a great setting.

    Tips for prospective students

as with any other college, start early. classes can go very fast and the longer you wait the more you will be limited and may not get into the class that you need or the proper time. also if you are seeking financial aid same story just like any other college. other than that enjoy the great setting of beautiful coeur d'alene, id and study hard.

    Academic Rigor

the academic curriculum is solid, challenging coursework testing each individual to put each students best mind forward. the teachers are usually willing to help you as needed but you must make an effort to dedicate yourself to the work and talk to them.

    Dorm Life

i do not live in the dorm, i rent a room in the city. it is good arrangement as nic has slightly limited dorm space.

    Food and Dining

i also do not eat at the dining hall but have heard good reports.

    What to do for fun

coeur d'alene is a fairly diverse area, and nic itself has lots of options that you can do for fun. if you are interested in government the school has the student government, or lots of events are help for the students such as dances, superbowl party, special events, etc.. there is also campus ministries, or volunteer programs to join. around town you can find bowling alleys, movie theaters, amusement parks, etc... the college has excellent intramural spots such as volleyball, basketball, softball, dodgeball, paintball, etc.. along with whatever else you can find to do.

north idaho college is a great school that encourages students to work hard and accomplish their goals. the teachers are enthusiastic and creative in helping their students progress. north idaho college is truly a great place for a person to start their college education.

    Tips for prospective students

working hard is the key to graduating from this school. just like anything in life it isn't easy, but the result is worth it.

    Academic Rigor

with a wide variety of classes, one could easily pick out the classes appropriate to their current level of education. of course, harder classes are going to require more energy, but the amount of knowledge that one will gain will make up for the energy lost.

    Dorm Life

i cannot speak for the dorms because i have not been in them before.

    Food and Dining

the food in the cafeteria is a little costly, but with a variety of foods to choose from, a nice lunch at the school isn't so bad. also, with the downtown area so close, a person can walk to one of the many restaurants on sherman avenue. from hamburger stands to italian food, the choices are endless!

    What to do for fun

north idaho college is literally right on the beach. in the summertime one can swim in between classes, or just hang out with friends. a great location to play beach volleyball and get a tan.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

a must see event on campus is art on the green. it is a place where people from all over bring their handmade items and sell them. with music and games this is a great event for kids and adults alike.

Great for these types of students

this college is a great place to get your two year degree. although if one wants to get a four year degree, lewis and clark state college has a set up right here on campus and will allow one to take classes here instead of in lewiston.

    Campus Safety

with a little bit of construction going on at the moment, safety is a must. with the work that north idaho college puts in to keep its students safe, the construction is just an inconvenience and not a hazard.

    Bang for the buck

For the most part, your getting exactly what you paid for, but to attain a certain degree you pay for stupid classes that you'll never use in your life and I think that's a waste of money. But in general, its a good price, not too expensive and you get what your paying for.
