    Did learn a lot

I learned how it is to be on your own and how different it is to be away from the people who you used to depend on the most when you were back at home. I learned a lot about how to manage time and money because being a student living on campus can be very expensive and of time's essence. You have to learn to make time to have fun because you have to stay so focused on doing homework and meeting deadlines. I learned educationally as well. Depending on your class size can really determine your level of attention you give to your instructor. So when you do pay attention you can really learn a lot. i learned that college is nothing like high school. It opens your eyes tremendously.

    Did enjoy being here

At times you do get home sick or at other times you may feel tired of living the campus life-but overall, you will love being there. There is so much you can do in a day that you'd wish one day lasts 100 hours instead of 24. The whole atmosphere and feeling-of-belonging made me enjoy the school itself. And every time I left off the campus and walked back onto it, I would just look at the school buildings and think to myself, this is my second home right here!

    Tips for prospective students

If you would like to go to Northern Illinois University, some tips I can personally give you are to stay on top of your real priortities whether it is classwork, financial aid, club and sports deadlines and practices, and etc. If you have trouble with school work, please get a tutor! Don't make a mistake like a lot of students do and slack off just because you don't understand the work. That's what you are paying for so take advantage of all the resources that the school provides. I also want to say, stay away from people who will make a negative effect on who you are because there are a lot of students who will take your mind off of what you came to school for. Practice proper hygiene, safe sexual conduct (if involved), do not drink and drive, and be prepared for the culture shock. Most importantly, be positive and learn how to maintain happiness while attending this school. Happiness just makes the college experience that much better.

Great for these types of students

The school is great for any and every student. I can truly say that I can recommend any student to come here. It can be a wake up call for some and just a brilliant experience for all. The school is so diverse that there is something there for everyone and their own personal needs and wants.

Fantastic learning atmosphere with interested (and interesting!) professors who are willing to work one-on-one with students to help them achieve their goals.

    Am enjoying being here

Despite the slightly chilly winters, the social aspects and family atmosphere of Northern is lovely. You really feel at home as soon as you move into the dorms your first year, and a variety of clubs and organizations are offered to fit your tastes in recreation. There is a wonderful recreation center on campus, and many cultural events are offered throughout the year for students, often free of charge.

    Bang for the buck

Great deal for how much tuition costs! My parents were very pleased with my choice, and even happier that it cost them a third of what they had originally intended on allotting me!

    Tips for prospective students

If you live in Illinois, be sure to check out any of the state schools before considering out-of-state universities--and their tuition rates--unless you have a scholarship of definite worth.

Great for these types of students

If you're open-minded and enjoy a relatively diverse student body without being one in a massive group of people, Northern is for you. It has a homey, small-town appeal with better dining and a great art program for what you pay.

    Am learning a lot

Some of the classes are pretty difficult and take a lot of studying, but this is a good thing. I have learned more from my Engineering class than in any other class I taken my entire life. The class sizes vary. I have had some classes with only 15-20 people, but others with 100 people. The teachers are mostly great. They understand that they need to entertain students, but leave the actual work up to them. They leave it up to you to earn the grade.

    Am enjoying being here

Sometimes it does get a bit boring. However, the people, at least the ones I am with, are great. It is a friendly environment and it is easy to meet people in classes, since many of the smaller classes end up being close. The social scene is fantastic. By the end of the first semester, almost everyone knows each other. This is something that does not happen at such a large university.

    Bang for the buck

Only $830/class. This is very good for a non-community college. The drom prices are what will hurt (nearly $1000/mo.), but appartments are only $275/mo. And with the top Accounting program and one of the best business colleges in the state, it certainly is a hefty discount.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard and don't underestimate the material. You may think this is not a difficult college, but it can be very challenging. Even Communcations 101 was difficult.

Great for these types of students

People that have good social skills will fit right in. Although it has the reputation of a party school, do not expect to be there very long if your only intentions are to party. However, if you do what is expected of you, you will earn the grade. Oh, stay away from MEE 101.

    Am learning a lot

Since attending Northern Illinois University I have learned a tremendous amount of information. Previous college's reminded me of high school level agenda; here were working towards becoming better and brighter students, who are at the top of the educational abilities.

    Am enjoying being here

The entire area is full of fun/extra circular activities for students. What I've found out is that the people are kind and friendly for someone who's new. Every night during the week there is something to do: whether its attending a sporting event, making an appearance to the recreational center, observing educational/guest speakers, or just even hanging out with peers.

    Bang for the buck

Northern Illinois University gives you what you pay for, in every aspect. The resources on campus are outstanding. There's a student center full of recreational activities, educational information, food, and tools for being a student.

    Tips for prospective students

My only tip for future NIU students is to have a wonderful time, apply yourself, and most important be yourself!

Great for these types of students

Great for any student; I'm a transfer student and I feel right at home at Northern Illinois University. More at home than I've felt before.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned more about myself then I have about any subject. I have learned who I am and the types of people I like hanging out with. Living in the dorms has been a great experience, and the living community is great. Most of the teachers are easy to get a hold of and are really helpful.

    Am enjoying being here

I miss home a lot sometimes. Once I found the right friends I began having a good time. On the weekends there isn't very much to do but party. Not being a party-er I am a little bored at times. The people here are kind of nice, but you really need to find your niche.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive. Northern should be cheaper. I don't enjoy having to pre pay for food or having to pay for football games when I don't don't attend any of them. Northern needs to figure out where people are actually spending their money. SAVE UP FOR BOOKS!

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to go to Northern remember college is a totally new experience, be open minded. No one is really around on the weekends or those minor holidays. Get to know the NIU website, that will solve any problems you have.

Great for these types of students

Anybody really. But in my experience, if you don't party... You'll be bored... But that's college for you, I guess

    Will learn a lot

I visited NIU for an open house and got to visit a lot of the faclities as well as the teachers. The teachers seem to want to help students and very friendly. Some classes are small so indivudual attention is there, but some are very large.

    Will enjoy being here

The campus is very nice. Buses can be taken around the whole campus. There are a lot of food choices around the campus as well. The students are very friendly. I have also heard the tailgate parties are crazy.

    Bang for the buck

You learn a lot, its worth the money.

    In three sentences

niu is geared toward being a community, not being a huge school where not everyone knows each other. all around campus there are ways to get involved, athletics are great and niu has been a great experience for me! the business program here is awesome as well.

    Tips for prospective students

stay ahead in your school work and most importantly get involved! my first year was really boring, so my sophomore year i joined alpha phi omega and that was on of my best choices: to get involved.

    Academic Rigor

depending on your program the difficulty of the classes will vary. as a business student, you cannot procrastinate, you have to stay ahead, attend every class and study for every exam. some teachers don't care too much, but others make attendance mandatory. it's your money, don't waste it skipping class.

    Dorm Life

niu does not call the rooms 'dorms.' instead they are called residence halls. niu's important aspect to them is the sense of community. residence advisors? we call them community advisors. there are many options of living on-campus.

    Food and Dining

there are many different food avail abilities around campus, all you can eat, a-la carte, and a grab-n-go. if you don't have time to sit down and eat something before class, you can take it wilpth you. there is brunch on the weekends and the dining halls are open from 7am - 11pm.

    What to do for fun

if you're over 21, there are bars, if not, don't fret. recreation center has basketball, there are swimming pools, outdoor courts and activities. there are a lot of activities through the outing center. cherryvale mall is about 35 minutes away. there is a movie theatre and a stage theatre in dekalb.

    Am learning a lot

I really am learning a lot here at NIU. The teachers here are great and are always true to their office hours and very willing to help you in understanding concepts that stump you. If they are too busy or you are in a large class there are always tutors around and willing to aid you in learning as well as studying. Some tutors may be paid for private services, but free services for every department and class are easily found and prove to be very helpful. In addition to this, there are always ways to double check to be confident in your selection in professors there are reviews to hear what other students have to say about the teachers that they have had in the past.

    Am enjoying being here

NIU really is a fun campus to be on. There are many friendly people and a lot to do. Along Lincoln, a main street next to campus, has many places to eat and hang out. On Sycamore there is an even wider variety of places to eat including Noodles, Steak and Shake, and the infamous Ollies among other places like the movies. Directly on campus we have the Husky Den where there is billiards, TVs, video games, and bowling! Not to mention all of the clubs you can participate in, the Fraternities, Sororities, we even have Humans Vs Zombies!

    Bang for the buck

The main absolutely awesome deal, is that of our meal plan. I am on the lowest level meal plan with $60 a week, I never have any reason to be hungry and I almost never run out of food money. Clubs are often free or at least relatively cheap. And as for activities, Monday is one dollar bowling! What could be better! And it's no cost to visit or rent from the multi-story library or use the computers in the labs, plus free printing!

    Tips for prospective students

Ask questions! Do not think that curiosity is a bad thing and do not think that anyone would ever judge you for being confused. Also, constantly check your MyNiu, this is where updates will be for dates and deadlines of payments, class applications, and more. Always be sure to visit your academic advisor and counselors, and never stop applying for scholarships! But calm down and have fun, don't get too overwhelmed. ^_^

Great for these types of students

NIU is great for ALL students. But I suppose I would definitely recommend those going into theatre, because it is supposedly the best program in the region. Also physical therapy, I believe this is the only school in Illinois that has both undergrad and graduate programs for physical therapy.

The classes at NIU can be very challenging. Along with the material you learn in class, you will also learn very good time management skills, public speaking skills, and other useful skills that are essential for the real world. You learn how to interview, how to network with employers, ethics, etc.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here at NIU! The social life here is amazing. The convocation center hosts a variety of great artists and shows. And the students show tons of Husky Pride!

    Bang for the buck

School is not cheap. But NIU has a renowned education program known for producing quality, ethical, successful students into the working world. And for such a well-known and respectable school, you are really getting your moneys worth here.

    Tips for prospective students

Take as many college credit/AP classes as you can. It allows you to have a lighter workload and you can take more fun classes, classes that you are actually interested in, rather than the required basic classes.

Great for these types of students

NIU is a suitcase school. It is located so close to home that many students commute or go home on the weekends.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers at NIU each have their own way of teaching their courses. Some better than others, it is all based upon how you learn. Even if you and the professor do not see eye to eye, there are great resources available on campus to aid you, such as the various major help rooms, tutors in the dormitories, and the library. Or even fellow students. Most people seem willing to answer a question. The assigned textbooks are good at explaining the material, and usually the professors base their lectures off of the chapters in the book. And then base their exams on your notes and suggested material.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a very spread out campus, sometimes running around the campus can be a bother, but as long as you set your schedule up right, there should be no problems. This will be my third year living in the dormitories and I must say I don't really want to live there again, but signed up right away without thinking. I'm not saying the dorms aren't bad, I'm living in the same dorm wing, same floor since Freshman year. And it's nice, most people that live in the dorm are nice and getting a good roommate is always best. The most I dislike about the dorms is the meal plan. Depending on your living situation, it isn't that bad. I recommend living in the dorm for new students.

    Bang for the buck

I believe NIU can be a little expensive. I myself think some of the benefits of being a student there could be an option. Dorm life takes up the most expense, with the meal plans. And while we pay a good amount of money for the internet, isn't that great. The wifi is horrible and even with an ethernet cable it can be annoying because of the log in system requirements. I realize many students access the internet at all times, but being a university, they should be able to compensate for it. Cable channels change without consent, and can be a pain to first manually install. NIU is creating a new dorm in hopes of increasing enrollment numbers. I think it is great, but I also think they should improve on other major complaints first. All and all NIU has many good qualities, but many things they can improve on as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Living in a dorm is required for freshmen, so be prepared to do that. Dorm life isn't bad so long as you make some good friends. Don't slack off in the beginning, and don't think just because you had it easier in high school it passes the same, it's not. You have to adjust accordingly. Don't blame the professor solely, do everything in your power to make an effort with them first.

I believe going to Northern was a good choice because not only am I learning academically but I am learning in other aspects that are needed to be prepared for the real world. If you take the right classes with the right professors (ratemyprofessor.com) you will learn a lot. Outside of the class I am learning to have better time management between my social and academic life. Even though Northern is not one of the most challenging schools, you must stick with your work because you will not breeze by.

    Am enjoying being here

Throughout high school I did not have the best of friends or even many people I can trust but going to Northern allowed me to meet the best friends I could ever have. I worked at an on-campus job my first year that helped me network for the future. I also joined Greek Life where I found my closest friends.

    Bang for the buck

Northern needs to figure out their financial aid issues because between books and living fees, it can be very expensive, and I am having trouble at this moment even affording to go to Northern next year based on loan issues.

    Tips for prospective students

Have an open mind and be open to try any organization because I would not be where I am today without mine. Be familiar with the location of buildings before your first day because I showed up to my classes late a lot the first week because I was not familiar with the campus.

Great for these types of students

Any student who can be independent and meet many people and be a part of something.

I'm a theater major at NIU. If you're looking into acting (or any of the arts for that matter), NIU should be a choice for colleges to look into. I've been learning under Katherine Gately, and I'll have her husband Richard Poole next semester. They own the Gately~Poole conservatory in New York, one of the highest ranking acting conservatories in the nation. And they're only two of the many teachers teaching here. The music program is tops (NIU is considered the best program in the nation for Steel Pan players), and the Art program is well staffed and supported. This is a call to all prospective art majors: NIU will make your Major seem like less of a silly thing and more of a career.

    Am enjoying being here

You will have to come to the campus and see if this is the one for you. I live in the Chicago land area and NIU (for almost everyone here) seems to be the college that is separated enough that you can feel like you're on your own yet a close enough drive that coming home (and receiving free meals when your parents visit) isn't a huge deal. The people are friendly, and with 25,000 student and staff you'll find someone to talk to. And if the idea of a gigantic state school scares you, don't worry; for some strange reason that I haven't figured out yet, NIU has a very relaxed, homey atmosphere about it that doesn't make you feel like a herring lost in the Atlantic ocean.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is around $20,000 a year and rising. Scholarships are just about as easy to get as at any other state school: if you're smart you should get something, but you've got a LOT of competition. It's worth it for the theater kids. We get a private conservatory education at a state school price. And our Junior year we get to go to Russia for a semester for just a few thousand more on that semester's tuition. Boo-Yah!

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early. And try to get into a specialty floor. These are floors that are prioritized during registration for students who are of a certain major. I live on the Theater floor, in what is called the Art Dorm at Neptune North. It's awesome.

Great for these types of students

    Theater.
    Visual Arts.
    Music (Specifically Steel Pan).
    Psychology.
    Business.

I am still in my general education classes right now. There is some learning, but there is also some review of material I had learned in High School.

    Am enjoying being here

NIU has a great sense of diversity and acceptance. There are all sorts of people, they differ race, ethnicity, personality, style, likes/dislikes, and numerous other things. There is always someone who shares a common interest with you. I am very involved in the university and would not have it any other way. It is a great way to get involved and make lifelong friends.

    Bang for the buck

NIU has great financial aid assistance, and as a state school it is very affordable. I have had a few payment issues this year, and the Office of the Bursars and the Financial Aid Office have both been quick to help me in any way they can. The school wants you to attend and get all that you can from going to NIU and they are willing to help you pay for school, or help you find a way to pay somehow.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip for prospective students is to check your Z-id email. This is how the university contacts you, and if you don't check it you can miss a lot of important deadlines. Make it a habit to check it at least once a day. My other tip would be to get involved in any way you can. It will help you adjust, and will be fun!

Great for these types of students

If you love diversity and an accepting campus attitude then Northern Illinois University is the place for you. You can be who you are and not have to feel self conscious about it. Also if you like Quidditch... then lucky for you NIU has a team!

    Did learn a lot

While I did learn while attending NIU, the coursework was not challenging. If you are passionate about learning don't attend this school as you will breeze through your classes.

    Did enjoy being here

I didn't live on campus, but DeKalb is a decent town.

    Bang for the buck

If you can't afford to pay for this school outright then good luck with the financial aid office. I took out the maximum amount of loans that I could just to attend because my parents couldn't afford to assist me and was miserable that I had put myself in debt to be taught by TA's rather than actual professors.

    Tips for prospective students

Communication between departments is dreadful. Information will likely be lost, you'll incur strange charges, and ending running all around campus in order to accomplish anything

Great for these types of students

Students who don't care about learning. Students who just want to say that they went to college and got a degree.

Northern's classes do have the most updated information and the teachers will help you learn everything there is to know about a subject. Although it may become frustrating there is always someone to help.

    Am enjoying being here

DeKalb is a place that is surrounded by cornfields. Northern is a enjoyable place if you have friends. If you don't have friends then this place can get pretty boring.

    Bang for the buck

I believe they charge entirely too much for the dorms but for your education the price is right. You get everything you need in order to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips for prospective students are do your best freshman year that is the easiest class year. Also do not I repeat do not put partying first because Northern will kick you out. Half of the people I came in with our gone.

Great for these types of students

If you are a student who wants to exceed and wants help getting there then Northern is for you. If you are a party person they have great parties but if you don't plan on being a student no need in coming.

It is hard being away from home, as it is at any college. The UNIV 101 class helps students adapt to being away from home. Soon however, the floor you live on becomes family.

    Will learn a lot

the academics here are amazing and they also have a really good reputation. They have plenty of different clubs and organizations available that are strictly for education purposes. Your college advisors are there to help you and if your willing, they will also be willing to go out of their way to make sure your college years are successful.

    Will enjoy being here

I know for a fact that I will enjoy being here. There's always something to do and being away from home, you have ten times more freedom than you did before. I know it will be a culture shock to go from living at home to being on my own but, I know that with focus I'll be able to handle the change.

    Bang for the buck

Whatever you do, do not let your money go to waste. We're college students and we're here for a purpose and that's to further our education. Don't let the freedom drive you away from your priorities. Your academics come first, then your social life. It's a shame to see how so many students fail out of college, simply from partying to much, and losing thousands of dollars in loans and or scholarship money.

Northern Illinois Unversity is a great place to attend college. I enrolled to Northern in 2009, and I am currently an undergrad sophmore planning on getting my BD in mechanical engineering, then from there will go for master. Northern Illinois is a great college because they have a program called Chance Program. This program is for high school seniors that didn't graduate HS with a good GPA, or that did not do so well on the ACT. Northern started this program because they wanted to give students the chance to attend college, because most college just deny your application if you have a low ACT score or a low GPA.
Once again NIU is a great college with good teaching/learning environment, and there are people working at NIU in order to guide you through your college life.

The university has tutors, study groups, etc to help students learn more while at Northern. The instructors are experts in their field of study and are there to help.

    Am enjoying being here

The people here at Northern Illinois University are friendly, the environment is excellent, and the instructors for every class are there to help students succeed. It is also easy to make friends with other students in your field of study as well as making friends with the instructors.

    Bang for the buck

Though it may be expensive, it has been the best decision I have ever made in choosing a college. This school has allowed me to be me. I have met a lot of cool people here at Northern and have made a lot of friends to. The best dorm at Northern in my opinion is Stevenson Hall because they have the best food and the best rooms.

    Tips for prospective students

Northern Illinois University is the best decision i have made. Those of you high schoolers who have applied and been accepted by Northern, this school is the best choice. There is a lot of organizations to join, fraternities and sororities to join, there is a variety of food to choose from, and you hardly have to spend money as most places at Northern accept Huskie Bucks which are provide by the school if you intend to get them when applying for your room. Get involved on campus.

Great for these types of students

Join organizations that fit your intended field of study. Do some volunteer work. I was a tour guide for Northern and it was the best decision i had made and i plan to do it again. Finally, build some leadership skills.

Northern Illinois is full of many interesting classes that you can really wrap your head around. The teachers are so nice and always willing to help you out.

    Am enjoying being here

I am meeting so many new people and the dorms are really a good time. I love all the many resources the campus gives you like the library, recreation center, and campus life building.

    Bang for the buck

Nothern is not a lot of money compared to many other colleges. It really is a beautiful and big campus that you will love just walking around on beautiful days. The dorms are a great place to live, and the food isn't as bad as you would think.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you walk around campus before classes start. It will help you find the buildings your classes are in and it will also help you look for shortcuts to that building.

Great for these types of students

Northern is great for the student who doesn't mind walking around and who are dedicated to their studies.

northern illinois university is one the best schools in the state of illinois. it has a very rigorous education, fantastic student services support with the various offices eager and equipped to help students, and a large variety of social organizations to be apart to feel truly one with niu. i recommend this school to all students because this has been a school of enlightenment.

    Tips for prospective students

for illinois residents, make sure that you check an institution has your major and check the accreditation. niu has a plethora of majors to choose from with high accreditation. i transferred to niu from another school and learned that out-of-state tuition is highly unnecessary, especially when you can get the same education or even better education by staying in-state like at institutions like northern illinois university.

    Academic Rigor

the academia here at niu is very challenging, however, the instructors are willing to make sure each student is able to learn the material. this is college and they will not baby anyone. if you have a question please do not be shy because professors are more than willing to help answer your question.

    Dorm Life

i like the dorms, though, i am new to the whole community bathroom style, which is where you share a bathroom with people of your same sex (ie. all males share a bathroom, all girls share a bathroom). people on the floor are fairly friendly and the community advisers (ca) are very active.

    Food and Dining

the food is excellent! lincoln hall and stevenson hall are the best places to get something to eat.

    What to do for fun

there are over 500+ activities, clubs, student organizations and intramural sports. get involved!

    Clubs and Activities

as i mentioned before there are over 500+ activities, clubs, organizations and intramural sports teams.

    Greek Life

there are 30+ greek fraternities and sororities on campus. study for the week and attend the frat parties on the weekend.

    Campus Safety

there is 24/7 police surveillance and protection. there is a police officer in each residence hall and there is a police station here on campus.

niu has a very great learning environment. the class sizes are very small and the professors are there to assist you whenever you need them.

    Tips for prospective students

try to focus on what you are coming to school for. niu is not a party school or rather not one anymore, so maintain your studies and focus on your grades.

    Dorm Life

    the dorms are pretty awesome

    Food and Dining

the food is amazing. they have almost every category of food you can think of (except sushi), to have a feast with.

    What to do for fun

there are so many sports offered at niu, but if you don't want to play profeesionally and just want to do it for fun, niu has many intramural sports.

northern illinois university is a big school and has lots to do. it takes some time to get adjusted but, if one is willing to stick it out it's a great experience. i would recommend it to anyone.

    Tips for prospective students

try to get involved as much as possible. the more people you know the better experience you will have; socially and academically.

    Academic Rigor

the academic rigor depends on the class loads you decide to take and the major you intend to go into. the class work can be alot if you take difficult classes and professors. although it's nothing that can't be managed by keeping up with it.

    Dorm Life

the dorm life is alright. the atmosphere of a bunch of young adult college students all in one place is a bit obnoxious but, that can be said about any college dorm. it's a good experience to have in the first year.

    Food and Dining

the food around campus and in the dorms is decent. the variety of foods changes with each dorm. there is always a healthy alternative.

    What to do for fun

there is tons to do around campus for fun. the key is to find the fun activities. most of the time there are parties on weekends.

    Bang for the buck

with niu you definitely get what you pay for. the only thing free around here are all the t-shirts that seem to come your way. if willing to pay for a college tuition you get what you paid for.

Great for these types of students

niu is great for anyone coming from a small school and really looking for a place to just blend in and not be known. it's also good for students who come from big schools and enjoy the hustle and bustle of a big campus.

    Clubs and Activities

there are always clubs and activities to join on campus. if there is one thing niu is excellent at it's making sure their students have every opportunity to get involved with the campus.

    Greek Life

the greek life is good out here. the greeks are friendly and it's fairly easy to engage in their activities.

    Campus Safety

campus safety is a number one priority here at niu. although there have been some saftey cautions, none of them have happened on campus. niu is no different then any college campus. if you are taking the right safety precautions then there is no need to worry.

Northern is definitely a commuter school, but it is still full of great opportunities! Every professor is goal-oriented, the campus is very homey, and the people are diverse and friendly! School spirit here is unbelievable, everyone who goes to NIU loves it!

    Tips for prospective students

Find a balance between social and academic life! Both are crucial to building a successful college and professional life.

    Academic Rigor

The school offers a variety of many highly accredited programs such as nursing, sciences, engineering, music, art, teaching, and physical therapy.

    Dorm Life

Great facilities with lots of friendly people. Close helpful amenities. The rules are not very strict, but do help keep order in the halls. The new halls are FANTASTIC!

    Food and Dining

Lots of options to choose from, food plans offer plenty of money for the smallest to the largest diets!

    What to do for fun

Lots of festivals in the fall, school organized events every other week at least, and plenty of recreational activities are planned each week. Indoor and outdoor sports available with equipment available.

    Bang for the buck

Like any other college education, it has some costs, however they are reasonable and the college offers lots of scholarships.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The grotesque statue in the courtyard is a location on campus sacred to the university. The observation deck is very neat to go up to visit (for free!) and the imfamous kissing bench! (:

Great for these types of students

Anyone who wants to have a fun environment to prosper academically and practically! Everyone will find people who have similar interests to them, and who are looking out for their well being!

    Clubs and Activities

Anything and everything from religious groups, to student lead organizations, greek life, intramural sports, workout classes, and service clubs!

    Greek Life

Many people join greek life at NIU. Its a fun, great experience for people to make life long lasting relationships with people from all over. A once in a life time chance.

    Campus Safety

There are many officers on campus at all times. Their number one priority is to make us feel at home, feel safe, and feel comfortable. They are not out to ruin your day, they want to ensure you have a good one. Regardless of past events, the safety is still huge and dominant on the campus and around DeKalb.

This school has High crime. The Business Department is your best chance for a good degree. It has gone from a really nice school to a dangerous school to be at.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend looking elsewhere unless your going to the college of business. I highly recommend reading the annual crime stats before considering this school

    Academic Rigor

I have been challenged and I have been bored. The Gen eds are pretty easy and full of students who do not care about the class and often skip. Once you get to higher level classes students become serious. in my course work i am being challenged yet i have heard students in easier majors being absolutely bored

    Dorm Life

I have never lived on campus and don't plan to. Crimes are daily. Once a fight broke out over a motzerrala stick. By what i have seen students are very angry and bitter. they more likely to walk over you than look at you.

    Food and Dining

From what I have had and seen both are terrible. Food is cheap and usually make students sick.

    What to do for fun

There's nothing much more then the town and sports. almost all students go home for the weekends or have parties

    Bang for the buck

The price is cheap for most schools, but they slap on fees and fines wherever they can. I've had no problems but getting a scholarship or help paying from the bursars office is next to impossible. For the education I am getting its not bad. But for most other students i highly encourage making sure it's one thatll be beneficial.

    Clubs and Activities

Almost non exsistant and those that are don't do much nor have a meeting times that inclusive for all students. I am in a club for something to put on my resume and we sit around disusing what we should do

    Greek Life

From what I've heard its dangerous. High drugs and alcohol and even rape

    Campus Safety

    Crime is high on campus

I have learned so much by going to NIU not only about school work and my major I am pursuing but I have learned so much about myself as well. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful that you always have a comfortable environment.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here! Coming out to NIU from California, although homesickness has gotten the best of me sometimes, was the best decision I could have made. Being out on my own I have branched out making so many new friends and experiencing a completely different culture out in the midwest then typical California.

    Bang for the buck

Especially being out of state the tuition is expensive but it is for sure worth it! I love Illinois and have had so much fun and the classes and professors are brilliant. It is for sure worth it!

    Tips for prospective students

I joined a sorority my first semester at NIU and have made so many friends and don't regret a second of it. Just make sure you get involved, that is the best thing you can do.

The professors here at NIU are actual participants in their fields for the most part. There is a lot to be learned from them, and most professors are very flexible with meeting times and appointments. There are many different majors to choose from, though I wish there were more bachelor programs for foreign languages other than Spanish, German, and Russian.

    Am enjoying being here

Northern Illinois University is a rather fun campus. There are swimming pools, lots of good places to eat, and a campus cinema. There is also a recreation center where you can exercise. The dorms aren't all that bad for the price, and there are also plenty of apartments in the area as well. Also, for the most part, the students are very nice people and don't mind getting to meet new people.

    Bang for the buck

Northern Illinois University has some pretty good programs considering its low tuition costs. The dorms aren't great, but they provide you with food and are relatively low on cost.

    Tips for prospective students

As with any college, you have to study hard in order to get what you want. For the price of tuition, you will learn a lot here, and broaden your horizons. Since this is a public university, you will meet all kinds of people from different backgrounds. Make sure to meet with a counselor often in order to check your progress.

Great for these types of students

If you are a student in Illinois who doesn't want to go far from home, then this college is a great choice for you. If you want to study abroad, this college isn't a bad choice either. Overall, it's a decent university with classrooms taught by qualified professors for a decent price.

I really enjoyed being away from home. I enjoyed it so much that now I wish i had stayed at the school instead of having to come home.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for students would be to: eat healthy while away at school (to avoid gaining the extra freshmen 15 lbs). Check out the Recreational Center (It's AMAZING!), Budget your Huskie Bucks and Your Meal Plan wisely. Study hard and study with friends and others in your classes when you can, classes can be difficult (make it easier for yourself as much as possible by talking to professors and tutors as well.)

    Did learn a lot

Most of the teachers for the major classes are great and have so much to offer students that really want to learn and ask questions. As a graduate with a Bachelors in Geography and GIS certificate I can say that the teachers and administrators in Davis hall including the meteorology staff are great. They are always wanting the best for students and offer as much life lessons as they can while teaching the curriculum.

    Did enjoy being here

Everything on and around campus is close in proximity to everything else. Friends are never too far and it's easy to walk or bike to classes or dorms. Overall it's a great place to be and be sure to check out the lagoon when the weather is nice.

    Bang for the buck

I feel they, like all other universities these days charge more than we should have to pay. This is mostly due to lack of government funding, however NIU has a very nice bus transportation system around campus and the surrounding apartments and dorms. The grounds are always in good condition and the library is huge and has every book ever needed for a class. It also has escalators! If you push yourself to learn as much as you can and come out of there with a degree and even a job then the bank for the buck is really there.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't go there to party at the frats or other apartments or dorms. You don't want to have underage drinking infractions on your record when you are trying to get a job. Go there to enjoy moving forward with your life and get good grades. Most teachers are there to help if you need it so be sure to ask questions and make good use of your free time. And be sure to go to the football games! Such a great time in that stadium.
