    Am learning a lot

The school is quickly becoming well-known for its academics now more than ever.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus IS still growing and getting great new modern buildings. Only thing is, it's still pretty much a commuter school.

    Bang for the buck

When they say, a private school education for a public school price, they aren't lying.

    Tips for prospective students

NKU is what you make of it. If you are a commuter student, then you have to work harder to create a fun (yet hard-working) semester. That's why I would recommend living on campus if possible, you're more connected to everything!

Great for these types of students

The university may not be huge, but it has its groups of people just as well. I've met every type of student here, from sorority girls to eclectic theatre students. You have options of so many community things to get involved in, and the staff here is amazing! I've never met nicer people working for a college.....ever.

    Will learn a lot

The staff seems to be very well qualified and the student to faculty ratio is small, so it will be easier to get one-on-one time with your teachers.

    Will enjoy being here

I was really both intimidated and impressed by the facility and staff that I met when I visited. All of the buildings are relatively new and the dorms are very inviting. I was mostly impressed by how friendly the staff members were when I visited the music department during my entrance audition.

    Bang for the buck

I have yet to take my first classes, but the tuition is cheap and I expect a college experience, so it will definitely be better than high school.

    Am learning a lot

The small class sizes provide every student with more individualized learning opportunities. This is very helpful for students, especially in their first-semester of college, to adjust from the transition to college. Students involved in the NKU Honors Program are exposed to more discussion and project-based learning, too. This has been really helpful for me, as I have learned new, innovative ways of thinking and creative ways to present information. The Honors classes offer a unique experience that I wouldn't pass up!

    Am enjoying being here

I am the only person from my high school's graduation class to attend this school, but I am very involved and feel at home at NKU. There are so many activities and clubs that every student can find a place to fit in. I am a member of a sorority and a new campus organization, and I am also a current student athlete. Joining clubs and participating in campus activities really enhance your college experience and NKU is a great place to feel involved.

    Bang for the buck

As far as tuition, NKU is one of the least expensive schools in Kentucky, and offers a high quality level of education. The classes really do have a private school feel, and compared to the price, it is a GREAT deal. Still, on-campus residents are required to have a meal plan, which runs around $2,500 per year, and many of the meals may go unused. Also, some housing buildings are a bit overpriced, but that is the case with most schools.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a campus tour and APPLY EARLY! First year scholarships are the biggest, but the deadline for consideration is in mid-January. Many of the merit scholarships are renewable, so having them really adds up. Also, applying early gives you an earlier orientation date, and there's a much larger class selection that way!

Great for these types of students

This school is perfect for students that have a drive to succeed. The Honors program is one of a kind, and is something that high-ranked students should look into. It's great for students that want to be involved as well!
Students interested in informatics should definitely consider NKU, as we are one of 3 schools in the nation with a college of informatics. A new state-of-the-art building is also in the works, and is planning to open in Fall 2011.
NKU is NOT a party school. It is mainly a commuter school, but students that live on campus usually leave on the weekends. It is a quiet campus and there are no frat/sorority houses.

An Excellent University! Building up to become one of the leading schools in the area. Safe and Affordable.

    Tips for prospective students

Dorm on campus and get involved for a better experience.

    What to do for fun

So much stuff! there are tons of clubs to join or frats. There are tons of shops and what not right around campus. If you want to go off campus then you can go to newport on the levee which is bout 5 minutes away and has a movie theater, a huge aquarium, as well as many mall shops. Just north of campus is Cincinnati, Ohio and there is tons to do there.

    Bang for the buck

A cheaper school, that is a great education. Division 1 starting in 2012!

Great for these types of students

Anyone. there is such a wide variety of students.

    Campus Safety

I have never even heard of a crime issue on campus! which is great. We have our own police that patrol the campus 24/7

smaller classes make an easier learning environment. the campus usually always has some event going on which means you always have something to do. go to the library, there is always someone who is willing to help you with research papers.

    Tips for prospective students

parking can be rough, make sure you come to class early. you might be walking a good distance to get to class.

    Academic Rigor

the classes i am taking are appropriately challenging. it is not easy, but it is enough to keep you interested.

    Dorm Life

i havent lived in the dorms on campus, but i have friends that do. i have heard it is fun. you get to meet lots of people and you don't have to drive far, if it all, to get to class.

    Food and Dining

there are tons of places to get something to eat. student union is the most popular place, but almost all builings have a take out area where you can get drinks, sandwiches or chips.

    What to do for fun

threre is always something to do on campus. with so many clubs and organizations, there is something for everyone. if you like night life, cincinnati is only a 15 minute drive from campus. you will never be bored.

    Bang for the buck

when i started here it was a lot cheaper, the price has increased considerably, but overall i am satisfied with the price i am paying for my education.

Great for these types of students

great for social students and foreign exchange students. really, there is something for everyone.

    Clubs and Activities

clubs too numerous to name, all participating in activities and theres always something to do.

    Greek Life

i never got involved in the greek life, but their presence is all over campus. if you are into greek life, you won't be disappointed.

    Campus Safety

the campus police send out alerts via email to everyone if something has gone awry on campus. for example, there was string of unlocked cars that were having things stolen from them. campus police alerted the student body and not only were people more concious about locking their doors, but the theif was also caught. proof that it works.

My opinion on NKU is that it is very up and coming. We have a great location, minutes from downtown Cincinnati, OH and Florence and Indiana. Also, the faculty and staff are amazing; they are willing to help in any way they can.

    Tips for prospective students

My first tip for prospective students is to remember that nobody has a good freshman year of college. But, at NKU, there are so many different programs you can turn to when you need help. Staff and Faculty honestly care about the students, so take time to know some and also know the resources available to you and TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM!

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on the major you're going into. Some are extremely harder than others. But as far as overall academics, NKU has high standards. The cool thing is, if you're having legitimate problems that are affecting your school work, your professors and advisers are willing to work with you. Everybody just wants you to succeed.

    Dorm Life

I personally never lived in the dorms, but I know numerous people who have and they love it. I wish I could have the opportunity to live on campus. You meet so many people and you can sleep in on mornings you have class since you're right there.

    Food and Dining

We have awesome food. We have almost everything you could want. We have burgers, pizza, sushi, Chinese, salad bars, etc. And if what you want isn't on campus, we're within walking distance of numerous restaurants and fast food places.

    What to do for fun

There's so much to do on Campus. We have the sororities and fraternities. There's also the intramural sports. There's the gym itself, with the swimming pool and many other features. We also have The Bank of Kentucky Center (BOK) where all of NKU's basketball games are held. There are also concerts, the circus, sports of all kinds, comedy shows, etc. And students get discounts on all of them.

    Bang for the buck

I really believe you're getting what you pay for, if not more. We have some of the most brilliant professors who not only teach their subject, but live it as well. We have some of the brightest minds walking our campus. Every resource you can think of is available to you. We're a community based school but we students from all over the world.

    Clubs and Activities

I can not even begin to list the number of clubs and activities on campus. It's in the high hundreds. If you want to get involved, I promise you that you will find at least one thing to do.

    Greek Life

We have many different chapters on our campus. And they do great things for the campus and the community.

    Campus Safety

Our campus is very safe. There have been a few minor incidents, like at every college. But our campus police are always visible.

NKU's population is small enough, that I feel more at ease and can receive individualized attention from my advisors and professors.

    Tips for prospective students

Kentucky has some well known universities - UK, U of L - to name a few. I think people want to be a part of that, But NKU offers just as much as those other schools - great campus, excellent academic programs, the latest in technology, reasonable tuition, plus Forbes voted NKU as one of America's Best Colleges in 2011! Go Norse!

    Academic Rigor

I always struggled academically in high school so college presented a new challenge. Upon my admittance, I found that the advisor really wanted me to succeed and help me set up a schedule to do so.

    Dorm Life

    I commute.

    Food and Dining

Great on-campus food choices and close to off-campus as well.

    What to do for fun

Great recreation center! Lots of student groups and student activities!

My science classes, especially, have taught me a great deal about what to expect in the field of nursing.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is easy to get around and so far my professors have all been great! I really like this school :)

    Bang for the buck

This is my first college, but from what I hear, the tuition is very reasonable compared to other schools, which I appreciate very much!

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved in campus activities to help you feel more at home! They are a great way to make new friends and feel as though you belong here. Everyone has been so helpful and nice so it's easy to stay on track as long as you have the determination to accomplish your goals!

Great for these types of students

Well, I'm a nursing major and so far, I have really liked all of my classes. I have a few friends also majoring in the sciences, and they really recommend NKU as well. It's a good school :)

    Am learning a lot

In both the classroom and living away from home for the first time, I was able to learn a lot about who I am as a person and as a student.

    Am enjoying being here

There's not many activities going on around campus, but classes are interesting enough and challenging enough to keep you busy. Also, living in the dorms in close somewhat close quarters to people, you become familiar with them and I've been able to make many friends and connections to people just living in the same building as them. Also, it is a pretty big step towards independence to be able to get out from your parents' house and have a place you can call your own.

    Bang for the buck

Being that Northern is a relatively small campus and still in the transition from being largely a commuter college, I wouldn't rate it as the best overall college/university experience for the money you pay.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep yourself busy with your schoolwork, but don't let that be all you do. Walk around and meet people and make yourself somewhat known around campus. If you can, stay in the dorms for at least one semester, its a good experience to have.

Great for these types of students

If you didn't exactly do great things in High School and want to prove to yourself you can succeed in a university environment, Northern Kentucky is a place where you can do that. As long as you stay up on your schoolwork and go to class you can do very well, but you have to be able to motivate YOURSELF, because there's nobody around at school to make you do anything you don't want to do yourself

The Anthropology Department has been an excellent sources of valuable insight into Native American cultures, both historic and prehistoric. American archaeology and anthropology are covered well, but I would like to learn more about Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. The History department is excellent in most aspects, especially in American history. It has a couple wonderful Africanist historians for the African period, and a great Southeastern Asia historian. I hope the future yields more Middle Eastern studies classes.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy the History Department, since every instructor DEEPLY cares about each of their students, and is PASSIONATE about what they are teaching. The Anthropology Department is gradually improving, by continuing to hire staff that still work in their fields, and within a couple of years will be updated and current to the times. The school as a whole is very welcoming and friendly to new students, and it feels more like a small community, rather than a big school.

    Bang for the buck

This school, by far, has the greatest value of all the Kentucky public schools. It is still under $10,000 per year for undergraduates, and room and board is affordable as well. As of 2011, a four year program in total is less than $35,000, and the school offers numerous scholarships, in which most students qualify. There are scholarships offered for the children and relatives of alumni, for students who reside within Campbell, Boone, or Kenton county, for those who have attended Scott High School, and also scholarships for students from certain neighborhoods. NKU has the most value for those who are from its surrounding communities, as it is a very community driven school.

    Tips for prospective students

As a prospective student, is wise to attend the Welcome Wednesdays, which are held most weeks throughout the year, to tour the campus and visit the classrooms. Also, contact Admissions and find out who the chair is of the department in which you wish to major, and schedule an advising appointment with them. Ask them many questions about course requirements, expected abilities and talents required from students, and employment prospects. They should be more than willing to help.

For parents of prospective students, if your child's school offers field trips to the campus, please encourage them to go. The staff at NKU has a great way of making a child's first campus visit most accomodating. NKU offers an array of summer camp programs, which are continuing today, for grades 6-10. These are great ways for getting students to plan for their futures before they are in high school, and each camp is enjoyable to students. Among these camps are mathematics, technology, astronomy, and science, to name a few. I highly recommend these camps.

Great for these types of students

NKU is the perfect fit for students wishing to commute or live close to Northern Kentucky, or students from small towns or communities who enjoy the community aspect of colleges. It is also perfect for returning and non traditional students, as well as students seeking a major in History or Informatics. Any student who seeks personalized attention, who would like a school tailored to their needs, should consider NKU.

    Am enjoying being here

The facilities are nice, the community is good, it is a dry campus, everybody is welcome and will find somewhere to fit in. Only complaint is the wind tunnel you seem to hit walking in any direction on campus.

    Bang for the buck

To be a bang it would need to be free. Although all things considered now that the informatics building is open IT IS WELL WORTH IT to be able to go in and get the fastest, most reliable internet I have ever had along with a secure connection and four floors of mac computers

    Tips for prospective students

DO not go here for art. Wear a thick jacket during the winter. It is a dry campus but the cops are pretty cool to anyone who is caught. If you know the right people you can get anything of your wildest dreams accomplished. Honestly the people at NKU have been my biggest resource, more then any amount of books or classes can ever be. You won't know everything and you will not be the best in your field, but you can find the people who are. Use them.

Great for these types of students

Pick something other then ART as a major, a few of my friends are art majors hate it here. Other then that we have a strong EMB, INF, medical facilities (although if your going to be in medicine consider UC), engineering program, and frankly the informatics program is awesome for anything computer related.

I am currently a School-Based Scholar, and I am taking Public Speaking here. My teacher is amazing, he makes the class! We use a lot of powerpoints and online technology, which makes it simple. It's an intro course, so the lessons aren't very in-depth. That is why I rated it four stars.

    Am enjoying being here

I've taken advantage of the Health Center- it's very small, crowded, and there is not a lot to do there, and also the Library-it looks very old and it is also small. While they may not appear great, I've gotten a lot of use out of them, which is what matters most! I've yet to participate in any activities, but there seems to be a lot! The school is located close to Cincinnati, but other than that, there is not a lot of excitement around it.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is very cheap, so for students who can't afford a better school will still be very will off at this school. You will make new friends and learn a lot.

NKU may practice traditional teaching styles in traditional settings at times but the majority of my experiences here have been far from ordinary. Professors have an array of personalities and passion for what they are teaching and like to remain on the level of the students by offering them more than textbook knowledge. Most of my classes we had a lot of discussions and they were about putting things in perspective or how they applied to us not just review over what happened. In addition, NKU offers a lot of clubs/organizations, study abroad programs, internships, and classes that allow students to learn more about themselves, others, and faculty on campus.

    Am enjoying being here

I really do enjoy being here I have met wonderful people like the Dean and his wife along with several faculty who are very enthusiastic about NKU. I am also an active member of both Delta Zeta and PRSSA which really changed my life because it brought me closer to the heart of the students and the campus.

    Bang for the buck

NKU is by far the cheapest university in KY.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't doubt this commuter school its bigger than you think and will have an even bigger impact on you.
Get involved, it's essential to your experience here.
You get out what you put in, so if you aren't making the efforts to make the grades, be involved, and take advantage of NKU's opportunities then you wont get much out of it.

I love being at NKU, but it doesn't have that college campus feel with all of the concrete, and the dorms aren't as nice as they should be. But Griffin Hall and the Student Union make up for it!

    Bang for the buck

NKU is worth the money, even tho it's somewhat expensive. You will get your degree on time!

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for FAFSA as early as possible, along with housing to ensure that you get the maximum amount of financial aid and the best dorm available.

Great for these types of students

    Theater, Media Informatics, Law, Science.

    Am learning a lot

I'm learning not only academics but many life skills as well.

    Bang for the buck

Even being an out of state student Northern Kentucky University is still in my budget.

    Tips for prospective students

Living on campus provides the best way for incoming students to meet new people and gain plenty of experience of living on your own without the parents.

Great for these types of students

    Great for non-traditional students.

    Am learning a lot

The small classes are more hands on and your professor actually knows who you are. So it makes it that much harder to skip class that day.

    Am enjoying being here

NKU has over 15,000 students there, so you meet someone knew almost everyday. There is always something going on, so your never bored. The campus is growing and becoming a beautiful place to take your studies at. Also we might be going to division one!

    Bang for the buck

It's so affordable to go to NKU. They try and help you out as much as they can with paying for school. Like they say you get a private school education for a public school cost.
