    Am learning a lot

The programs are rigorous, but wonderfully small and provide many resources for help and additional learning. The homework and reading are heavy, and going the extra mile in your studies pays off.

    Am enjoying being here

The students and professors are very friendly. The campus has an overall warm feeling about it. If you ever need anything, whether it be someone to talk to or assistance for problems, there is always someone willing to help.

    Bang for the buck

PLU is very expensive, but the quality of education you receive is outstanding. It is never weird or uncomfortable to ask the instructor for help, whether via email, after class, or during office hours. The library is open until 1 am weekdays and offers free tutoring programs if you need help.

    Tips for prospective students

Study, study, study!! Do it as much as you can! If you don't, you will have a hard time keeping up, especially during your first year. PLU is NOT a party school, though there are some energetic crowds on lower campus. The in crowd happens to be those who get good grades, and, for the price you pay to attend, you don't want to be flunking out.

Great for these types of students

This school is EXCELLENT for those who are responsible, serious about their future, are studious, athletic, religious (don't worry, you won't be attacked if you're not), and/or overall want to to obtain a higher quality of education.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for scholarships....they add up. Also, private universities like PLU look very expensive on the surface, but they give many more grants and other financial aid opportunities than the public universities do.

Great for these types of students

Students interested in the liberal arts, who want a smaller environment where you can really get to know everyone....from the people in residence hall to your professors.

When preparing for college, you only hear stories about how difficult the work is. Fortunately, at PLU, the professors have such a passion for what they teach that the subject matter is made fascinating. I knew learning biology was going to be rough, I just didn't know how fantastic the faculty was going to make the experience for me.

    Am enjoying being here

My classes are awesome, I love my job (office assistant for the Registrar), and it's super easy to get involved in clubs, sports, and other activities (Biology Club and student newspaper, for me).

    Bang for the buck

The financial aid office went out of their way to help me find the money to attend. It was cheaper for me to attend PLU than a state school, and when you factor in the small class sizes, resources for students, and personal attention from professors-PLU is the easy choice.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't look at the starting price tag for colleges: look at the financial aid you get and *then* compare schools. Also, know what you want from a school. If you want a great economics program or sports team...you might want to look elsewhere. But if you want to actually participate in sports, or lead a student group focused on economics, you might be in the right place.

Great for these types of students

    Natural Sciences
Those who want to study abroad (40% of PLU students study abroad, compared to the national average of 3%; PLU was also the first college to ever have students studying abroad on all seven continents simultaneously)
    Music/Art

You learn so much. The professor are engaging and will take time outside of classes to help you, which was something the other, larger campus professors would not. There are such a variety of courses you can pick what interests you.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a beautiful campus with so many resources, such as health centers and tutoring. The people are friendly and it is a great place to be at school.

    Bang for the buck

This school is extremely expensive, but you get so much out of the school that it is worth it. Plus the school financial aid office helps find ways to make the school more affordable.

    Tips for prospective students

    -Do work on time.
    -Search for scholarships early.
    -Get to know your professors.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for pretty much all types of students. It is an open-minded campus and there is something for everyone.

    Am learning a lot

This semester I am taking a literature course in a class with seven other students. I am also taking an anthropology course in a huge class of about fifty. The professor apologized for the outrageous amount of students taking the class and in hopes that we would never feel like just a number, vowed to try his best to learn all of our names and encouraged us to meet with him during office hours. I have a friend at CU-Boulder in a chemistry class of 600. If you are the kind of student who enjoys a seminar type atmosphere rather than lecture in the majority of your classes, I highly encourage you to look at PLU, especially if your are looking at a degree in the humanities or social sciences. I am only a freshman, but I can say that so far all of my professors have been extremely intelligent, professional and passionate experts in their field with the most fascinating and inspiring stories. Pacific Lutheran is a great place to get an education.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love it here! I've learned a lot, met great people and made some seriously crazy memories and my experience is only just beginning.

    Bang for the buck

When you ask around campus for the reasons students chose PLU, the great financial aid package is almost always listed in the top three. Yes, it is a private university so obviously it's going to be a bit spendy, especially when looking at the price tag on this site and others like it. However, I strongly encourage you to ignore that terrifying number, at least for now. After applying all the aid they gave me, it was cheaper to attend here than both the instate schools I applied to. Pair that with a small campus atmosphere, small class sizes and other private school perks and I'm practically stealing a great education.

    Tips for prospective students

PLU weights your grades when you apply, and many of the scholarship opportunities are based on that weighted GPA. Not too many universities do this but if you are a sophomore or a junior and you're pretty positive that Pacific Lutheran is the place for you, I'd especially recommend spending your remaining years earning that AP credit. A B in an AP class is equivalent to an A in a regular class, and each AP A gives you an extra boost to your GPA. With that extra cushion, you don't have to be afraid to test your mind a little.

Great for these types of students

If you love to feel involved, PLU is the place for you. There is always something going on, whether it's a school wide dance, a Harry Potter premiere party, or an Outdoor Rec ski trip to Snoqualmie. It is super easy to get involved in clubs, intramural sports and other organizations, and if you have an interest in music choral and instrumental ensembles are only an audition away.

    Am learning a lot

Professors push you to learn by more by having you relate what you are learning in class to things either occurring in the world or by how it relates to you outside of the classroom. Many professors hold plenty of office hours and are happy to help you.

    Am enjoying being here

The people you will meet here are awesome. Everyone, students and staff, are extremely friendly so it won't take you long to find new friends if that's something you are worried about. However, the school is not located in an area with a lot of things to do, but Seattle is not far away. In addition, there are no big sporting events that draw a large crowd. Attendance to athletic events are probably comparable to what it is like in high school, but those that go are there to root on the Lutes.

    Bang for the buck

While you do learn a lot and are able to get to know your professors as well as they can get to know you, the school is fairly expensive for what it offers. Therefore, if you do come here it is imperative that you do well as well as take advantage of office hours. While the campus is nice, it does not look like it is $40k a year school. Many buildings need renovating/remodeling, and to be fair the school has plans on doing so for buildings on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to work hard for every class. Attend every lecture, take good notes, and read and study as much as you need to in order to learn the material. If you have questions, don't hesitate to go to office hours. If you don't want to use office hours or don't really care, go to a big school instead. A small school like PLU is meant for you to be able to get to know your professors as well as ask them questions, which they encourage. Overall, you want to make sure that you do well in school as well as take advantage of office hours. Otherwise, you are just wasting your money.

Great for these types of students

Students that like the small atmosphere such as in high school, don't mind studying a lot and visiting office hours, and don't mind if they miss out on things you'd have at a big school (large sporting events, large classes, more variety of clubs and more research opportunities) then PLU would be right for you.

You learn as much as you are willing to learn here at PLU. There is ample opportunity to learn, not just in the classroom, but through clubs, organizations and even just events and lectures that are constantly taking place.

    Am enjoying being here

PLU has a very open and accepting community; because of its rather small size, you tend to get to know a decent portion of the school. I have found people that I will be friends with for the rest of my life, I have had multiple amazing opportunities to do what I love and be recognized within my department, and some of my fondest memories are from my three years I have been here.

    Bang for the buck

Most, if not all of the professors at PLU are here because they really want to be here; they have a passion for teaching, for their subjects and their students and its very apparent in classes. It is quite an investment to come here, but PLU is extremely helpful in the amount of financial aid that it's students are given. If you want to come here, PLU will find a way to get you here, and if it is your goal that it will be worth your money, it will be.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for as many scholarships as you can; it never hurt anyone to try. In addition to this, please come visit the campus and stay for a while with one of the current students. You will be welcome to sit in on any class and get a better idea of what life will be like on campus. Another tip is to get involved! There are so many things to be a part of on campus and it will really make your college experience. Lastly, invest in a sun lamp; it rains quite a bit here, so you may have to seek out alternative means of getting Vitamin D.

Great for these types of students

PLU is great for both extroverted and introverted people; because of the diverse community we have, you will no doubt find a niche. It is school that will foster learning for ambitious and curious students, and it is a school for students with a lot of passion and positivity.

    Am learning a lot

I walked onto campus thinking I knew everything but I've learned more in this one semester in classes and in random conversations then I have in the past four years of high school.

    Am enjoying being here

The PLU environment is warm and welcoming. From the Red Carpet Club to the Orientation Guides, everyone on campus wants to make the university experience one to enjoy and cherish for the rest of your life.

    Bang for the buck

This school is expensive but they have really good scholarships if you apply. The dorms are not exactly gorgeous but living on campus is worth the cost.

    Tips for prospective students

Live on upper campus! If you want to go to parties and be loud, you can walk down to lower campus, but it is nearly impossible to study down there.

Great for these types of students

You will be great for PLU if you have an open mind and enjoy meeting new people in a safe, and beautiful environment.

    Am learning a lot

Be prepared for the transition between high school and college because it is QUITE different. You don't just learn a lot about anthropology and economics, but you learn a lot about yourself too. PLU helps to develop you into a well rounded person. I can already see myself changing since I've been here for only 2 months.

    Am enjoying being here

Study as much as possible because getting accepted is the easiest part about going here. Staying at PLU is the hard part. Also, I have never met so many different kinds of people in my life. Everyone at PLU is so accepting, nice, and different in their own way. There is something about PLU that draws in different kinds of people.

    Bang for the buck

Live on lower campus if you are looking for a nicer dorm. You pay the same to live in the dorm that is 100 years old so apply early to get the one you want. Upper campus is also located near everything (classrooms, University Center, Admin., etc.) and lower campus is more loud and social. Harstad is incredibly outdated compared to the other dorms, but they are huge so apply early if that is important to you. Also GO TO EVERY CLASS!

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for scholarships like crazy because it is expensive. Talk to students who go there and do an overnight visit if you can. Don't forget your map!

Great for these types of students

PLU is only great for students who are very serious about their school work. All kinds of people are accepted at PLU. There are support groups for EVERYTHING and they have many different clubs and activities to get involved. I wouldn't say PLU is for the partyer because parties here start at dark and end at midnight because people value their sleep. Leave your social lives at the door if you plan on going to PLU.

The classes here at Pacific Lutheran University are fantastic! The professors make it their business to help students who need help! Their dedication to one-on-one education helps students to learn at their own pace, increasing the student's ability to learn in the University environment.

    Am enjoying being here

I cannot imagine going to school anywhere else! The community of students and teachers makes every student feel important and valuable to the University on the whole. Student life is fantastic. There is plenty of fun activities to do on campus.

    Bang for the buck

I am at Pacific Lutheran University on full tuition scholarship, but even if I was not, PLU being a private University gives several scholarships. Under few circumstances will a student attend on no scholarship. And again, even if they were paying full tuition, for the one-on-one time with professors, it is well worth the around $30,000 tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to attend PLU, it is important that you are an involved student in High School. A big thing here on campus is vocation, so if you know your vocation already, mention it in your essay, application, or interview!

Great for these types of students

PLU is great for students who are looking for a challenge, music students, students who are not afraid to ask for help, and self-motivated learners. It is also great for students who are interested in exploring the role of religion in their everyday life, however students with no religious affiliation can also thrive here.

Awesome Professors with are dedicated to students' learning.

    Tips for prospective students

    Academic Rigor

PLU is not easy but you do learn a lot.

    Dorm Life

Never lived on campus but I hear the dorms are ok yet many students would rather live off campus.

    Food and Dining

A lot of variety of food and good system so you aren't waiting in line forever.

    What to do for fun

Right across the street is bowling. A lot of little food joints around the campus. Plenty of sports related activities that are open for those who aren't in sports. Golf course on campus.

    Bang for the buck

A lot of things on campus are expensive and you are required to pay for things you never use.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The red square chapel upstairs room is really cool because of the stained glass.

Great for these types of students

The students like being involved in the community and helping others and the planet.

    Clubs and Activities

Plenty of activities and clubs for each student. Always new activities and clubs growing.

    Greek Life

    None.

    Campus Safety

Great campus safety. Get emails regularly from Campus Safety on updates, problems on campus, etc. Campus Safety cars always driving around to make sure things are going correctly and no strangers or unusual activity going on. Am learning a lot

You definitely have to be ready to learn tons of new stuff in your first year of college. The difference between work loads in high school and college is crazy. Within your first semester you learn more then you ever learned in your four years of high school. You must be a person who has great time management; and if you aren't one of those people, you'll have to learn quickly. After the first couple off weeks you adjust and then the sky is the limit for what you will learn.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is something that can't go without being noticed. It is the first thing that grabs you when you step onto the campus and it is truly beautiful. The combination of people that are on campus, personality and value wise, is something that cannot be substituted with anything else; it is truly a great opportunity to get to know different kinds of people as well as yourself. When you walk through the campus you can stop and talk to any random person and have a great and friendly conversation with them. It really is a happy place to be around. Also you never think you'll change, but after a year in college, you go back home to see all of your high school friends and you feel different. It changes you, but for the better. It is nothing less then unique.

    Bang for the buck

Of course attending a private school means the cost will be somewhat higher then a typical state school. However, the amount that you learn here and the great experience you get exposed to is worth the price of admission. The type of education you get is hard to match in the area and being such a small school the professors take the extra time to explain things and help you learn as much as possible in your time at PLU.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip would be to expect the unexpected. It is a tough transition going from high school to college, but if you persevere and and manage your time well, you will have no trouble being successful. I would also say that you need to take time to relax and hang out with your friends as well as doing your work. Academics is what you are there for, but the relationships you build with people will be something you cherish for the rest of your life.

Great for these types of students

Students who want a smaller community where everyone knows everyone, want to be involved with tons of campus events, and want to have the opportunity to get to know professors as well as many different people on a friendly basis are the kind of students who would fit in here. Students who also have an interest in a wide range of academic experiences and a thirst for growing as an individual with great people around them would fit in perfect at PLU.

PLU's a well rounded school that focuses on balancing a student. The course load of that helps a person to learn in different styles and settings. The campus is very welcoming and provides a home feeling.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't procrastinate, don't loose yourself. Procrastination is really easy in the social scene in college, especially at PLU when things and events are happening every day and every night. Learning to balance a schedule is the key to doing well your first year...and all years.

    Academic Rigor

Different majors provide different rigor, but overall, for the most part a student can be really challenged here. The small class sizes make learning really personable and one can't just walk into class not having studied or reviewed material.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is really fun! It's a good community for people in the school. PLU is a small school, so it's a good way to connect with a large amount of people.

    Food and Dining

The dining services get really repetitive and don't offer much variety. The food is cooked in mass, but could be done better. I think that that the school cuts short in this department. It makes it really difficult for students to maintain a healthy diet.

    What to do for fun

Parkland isn't the place to have a lot of fun. Learn the bus systems and you can get out to Tacoma for 75 cents. It's really not difficult to get off campus and do something fun, but the bus is key.

    Bang for the buck

For what some students pay- it's really not worth it. PLU is very expensive.

Great for these types of students

Mostly everyone. PLU has a really diverse student body. There's a place for everybody. Really, everyone!

    Clubs and Activities

If we don't have it- you can make it. Activities and clubs are a great way to knit a social system.

This University is established with some of the most amazing Professors. The education and student life here active and constant. This school seems expensive but is very much worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for scholarships and understand your financial aid while you are dealing with it. Taking responsibility for yourself financially makes the college experience more focused on your education.

    Academic Rigor

The academics here are what makes PLU so outstanding. While every class will require much outside work and will be challenging, from my experience, the professors are there for the students helping them every step of the way.

    Dorm Life

I only was given the opportunity to live in the dorms during the January term at PLU but it was probably the best time of my life. For the most part, the dorms are very relaxed and quiet hours are respected. They aren't that new but they are much bigger rooms than other universities I've visited.

    Food and Dining

When you have a meal plan the food is wonderful because you aren't paying up front for it. But commuter students have to pocket out a good amount of money for not that much of food. The food is good nevertheless but far too expensive.

    Am learning a lot

I learn new things basically every time i step into the classroom. From my religion course, that keeps of baffling me with how little I actually knew about the bible to my history class where each day we engage in group discussions and analyze the texts we have read and why they were important.

    Am enjoying being here

When I heard that my fellow high school class mates had 700 student class sizes, I immediately began to appreciate the class sizes here at PLU. Because I am a bit of a shy person, in those large numbers I would have been swallowed up in the classroom. But here at PLU the instructors care about your success and actually push you to do better and offer help.

    Bang for the buck

The school is a private college so it will be expensive. But for me personally it is too expensive and if I don't receive help with scholarships or other means I might have to transfer to a cheaper institution of even a community college.

Lots of choices in the meal hall. Though the dorm rooms are small, the accommodations are pretty big. I only wish there was more grants available for students with extra financial need. However, if you do need help in obtaining extra aid, the financial aid office is very helpful and sweet.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to apply very early to give you time for extra aid and get everything in order before had. Also be sure to be applying for scholarships as early as your junior year if possible. If your not sure what to major in, I suggest talking to current students or figuring out what you really enjoy ahead of time.

Great for these types of students

Personally, I think PLU is great for all types of students. Just be ready to work hard, have fun and learn.

    Am learning a lot

I love being able to go to a class where not only do I love the professor and the curriculum that is being taught, but I am learning tons of information that I truly care about.

    Am enjoying being here

There has been some challenges as I moved out of state away from my entire family and friends yet the individuals at the school are extremely nice and welcoming. Everywhere you go you are met with a smile.

    Bang for the buck

I would have to say 5 out of 5 because I am receiving a scholarship for my academic achievements so the price of the University is something that I can afford while achieving a top education. The teachers, in my major department, are always willing to help out and know their stuff which makes every penny I am spending worth it. Of course it would be awesome if they had more variety in the food at the cafeteria with the money I am paying for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to campus and take a tour, spend the night, eat in the cafeteria! Anything that will get you on campus is awesome cause then you'll be able to feel the vibe PLU gives off. It was my visit and the amazing vibe I got from PLU that made me want to come all the way out to Washington for college. Also make appointments with everyone and anyone you want too. The financial aid department will make PLU affordable while the academic advising center can direct you in a path you'll need to achieve your dreams.

Great for these types of students

It is a great school for individuals who are driven to succeed in academics and are at college for the education. It is also good for any individuals who are leaders in their own community or who want to become leaders as there are tons of opportunities to become involved on campus and even lead the way. Of course it is a great school for people who also enjoy balancing a good work load with a drive to explore the surrounding areas of Washington as well as the PLU campus.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are very dedicated to helping their students learn. Most are friendly and more than willing to help a struggling student who comes into their office during office hours, or even reaches out through e-mail.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy PLU very much. The students and faculty are friendly and always willing to help with any problem you have. Clubs are welcoming to anyone who wants to join and they can help you figure out what your passions are.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is expensive but PLU offers many scholarships to those who need and deserve help.

    Tips for prospective students

If you decide to attend PLU, I suggest that you get involved in many different activities. This is a great way to meet new people and get involved in your new school. I also suggest applying to as many different scholarships as you can.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for people who like a small group environment, but still enjoy being around a lot of people. The students and faculty are very friendly and everybody is connected through clubs and residential halls. Most people leave their dorm room doors open for others to come in and hang out.
