Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State is a first class University. Professors are both well informed and intriguing. Even the biggest lecture classes can seem like an engaging one on one meeting. The class listings also are very various and allow for much customization in the college experience. Ine general professors and advisers seem to genuinely care about my progress. The only con I find is that since the school is so large many of the courses fill up quickly so stay on your toes.
Am enjoying being here Let's just say last year I was able to see A Day to Remember, EVE 6, and Comedian Daniel Tosh all for free. The college provides for safe fun events while the town still is large enough for those who want to go out and drink or party at a club to do so without much of an effort. Come on, PSU is one of the top party schools. Don't worry a little self control will keep you from wasting your college experience on parties.
Bang for the buck The education is top notch, the experience is even better. Still the price tag is very steep. The only thing that holds back this school from absolute greatness is the steep price tag. Not to mention with government cuts the ticket is going to continue to rise because of new construction plans. Still with the proper financial aid and scholarships PSU is still the only choice for me. LETS GO STATE!!!
Tips for prospective students Stay organized. Learn your buildings. And try to schedule yourself so you ensure you can still have some time for fun. As long as you stay focused college isn't to bad. Make sure you discuss financial aid with your parents, your counselors, with your college advisers, and even with the office of financial aid. This is a money intense university and you will need the help.
Great for these types of students Great for anyone really. Even a small town boy like me who hates large crowds has found his place in good ole State. Numerous clubs, activities, and top of the line classes in any field make this a college accessible by anyone. Even the small town boy can fit in because the town is small enough while still accommodating the big city party kid. You will have a few lecture classes so if you completely are against lecture halls then stay clear of PSU but once you make it through some of the base level classes the sizes shrink. I refuse to say that anyone can't find their place. Happy Valley welcomes everyone.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot High school classes never provided the challenge that I felt that I needed academically, but when I got to Penn State I found that. Teachers no longer treated us as children and did their best to stimulate learning and provoke genuine thoughts and discussion. I never had to work harder for grades, but on the same token, I chose really challenging course work and I also learned a lot more that way. I highly reccomend Penn State for those who want to go to college and seriously EARN their degree, learning along the way.
Am enjoying being here I LOVE Penn State. I honestly can't imagine myself anywhere else, and I wish that college lasted for more than four years! The whole summer, I wanted nothing more than to get back to school. Classes are flexible, the friends are great, there's a club, activity, group, event or party for everything and everyone so being social and being bored are never problems you have to worry about. It really is fantastic and I couldn't imagine spending the next three years of my life anywhere else.
Bang for the buck Yes, Penn State is very expensive. You will never find anyone who goes here denying that fact. However, with the level of Education that we receive, the facilities, the social life, the athletic department and that the reputation of our school world wide, I find it more than worth it. Not only do you receive a fantastic education with plenty of extracurriculars and opportunities for success, but you also are attending a school with the world's largest alumni association, and where the name of your school on a resume will hold a lot of weight. However, there is no denying that sometimes you have to question just WHY Penn State is so expensive. Its a double edged sword, but I find it worth it.
Tips for prospective students Yes, Penn State is well known for its drinking and for its Greek life. But don't let that be the be-all, end-all of your college career.
DON'T immediately get lost in the partying scene of Penn State - while its okay to party and have fun, learn how to do it in moderation so that you don't end up screwing up your G.P.A. (and in turn, screwing yourself over) in your first year - you'll still be paying for it two years later and its a lot easier to do than you'd think.
DO go to the involvement fairs. In Alumni hall in the HUB running for a week straight at the beginning of the semesters there are booths and booths of clubs and activities across the Penn State community, with different groups every day. If a group even mildly interests you, put your name on the list serv. You can always take it off later if you choose.
DO get a planner or some method of keeping track of when all projects and deadlines are due. They have a nasty way of creeping up on you.
DON'T take the buses unless you have to. Long walks across campus will help you NOT gain the Freshman 15.
DON'T make a habit of always skipping class. Sure its okay to miss one here or there, but by telling yourself that its okay to constantly miss class, you'll screw yourself over in the class and develop a habit that may be harder to break in the future.Great for these types of students Determined, Responsible, Organized, Liberal, Involved, Outgoing, Social, Fun-loving, Intelligent, Party-goers

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot No matter what class you take, your bound to pick up some information. Whether it is just a general education class or a class to enter your major, you will learn something. One of the benefits of going to such a large school is the diversity in the classes you can take. I guarantee anything you are interested in, Penn State has. From ballroom dancing to hip hop classes, to learning about ice cream and trees, from science to hotels, Penn State has everything you can imagine, and you can have fun doing it.
Am enjoying being here I can not imagine going to any other school. Penn State is huge, but at the same time can feel so small. With over 40,000 students, each day varies. One day you can run into 50 people you know and the next not even one. Another benefit to such a large school is the extra curricular activities. There is a club or organization for EVERYTHING. Even if you didn't make the PSU teams, they have IM teams, or club teams for just about any sport you can think of and for males or females. There are clubs for any subjects such as the business or math, religious clubs, clubs supporting the environment, and if there is not a club that suits you, you can even start one. Greek life is also a huge part of Penn State. If you were considering joining a sorority or fraternity, this is the place to do it. There are over 20 sororities and many more fraternities. During rush, you are bound to find a place, somewhere to fit in, which helps adjusting to college life much easier.
Bang for the buck A downside is the cost of PSU. It is one of the most expensive state schools I have seen, especially if you are like me and pay out of state tuition. But like I said this school is amazing and I would not want to go anywhere else. The campus is beautiful, the technology and facilities are always well kept and clean. Help and tutoring is always available, and the campus is always safe. If you have a problem paying for school, there are many scholarships you can apply for.
Tips for prospective students DO not waste your time. The worst thing you can do is not take advantage of all the opportunities schools can offer. Networking, getting involved, joining clubs, getting to know your teachers can only benefit you.
DO learn how to budget your time. You need to be able to balance school work with having fun. This is probably one of the hardest things to do when you enter college. Its not like high school, teachers will not be lenient, and if you miss an exam you will get a 0. Stay on top of your work, and study in advance for test. Exams cover so much more material than they did in high school.
DO know your limit. When you go out, know when you need to stop, and when its time to go home. Always go out with friends and stay with someone you know. There are buses that run till around 2 - 2:30 at night, and are the easiest ways to get back to dorms. You can have a good time, just be safe about it.
DO go to your teacher and ask for help if you do not understand something. Don't let yourself get behind because if you do it is so much harder to catch up. Having to drop a class because your afraid of failing sucks!
DO take online classes with your friends. Some are easy general education classes that do not require as much work/time because you do not have to go sit in a classroom. Also taking them with people you know helps, you can ask each other questions.
DO stay on top of dates. It might sound stupid, but if you forget to do something, chances are your going to have problems. Housing and classes go quick. If you do not schedule when you are suppose to the class will fill and you will miss your chance to get it. There are deadlines for everything. Planners help a lot with keeping things organized.Great for these types of students Anyone! There are all kinds of people from all over the country that come to PSU. It is diverse and there is a place for everyone. If you are shy, loud, outgoing, or conservative, everyone adjusts and makes friends that last forever. PSU is full of spirit and pride. We are proud of our school. WE ARE... penn state!!

Categories Rating Comments Am enjoying being here It's a great place to be! PSU is like a second home to me. There are wonderful professors that are always willing to help you even on their days off. People are friendly and this is a place where you will meet fast reliable friends that you'll be friends with for years to come.
Tips for prospective students Don't be lazy with the school work you will fall behind!! Always set up meetings with your professors especially when there is a big test or paper coming up (prepare your questions days before the meeting so they can help you). Don't be afraid to meet new people. Try out something new when you attend here like a club or an organization.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State really knows how to help everyone learn and utilize their skills to their fullest potential. I've learned so much being a student at Penn State and I really like the student to faculty ratio offered here. The professors are so helpful and are always willing to help out any of their students!
Am enjoying being here I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE being at Penn State. It is such a fun school. There is always something to do either on or off campus. Between the football games and the free food, you can't go wrong being a student here. Like I said, there is always something to do and being at Penn State is perfect.
Bang for the buck I truly believe that you are getting your money's worth at PSU. Although tuition rates are rising, you're still getting a fabulous education AND there are so many employers out there who are Penn State alumni who will offer you a job over someone who didn't go to Penn State. (It's actually a fact that if a PSU grad and a non-PSU grad are competing for a job, the PSU grad will get the job!)
Tips for prospective students 1. BE YOURSELF AND DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY! Don't just pick a school because all your friends are going to the same school. Sure, it's nice to have someone there that you know, but in the end you want to be at a school that you actually enjoy and want to be at.
2. Get involved! Do things you've never done before or something you don't think you would ever do. Explore everything that college has to offer. Plus, it's a great way to make friends!Great for these types of students EVERYONE!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Whatever you are interested in, there is a class for it! At Penn State, I'm not just learning, I'm learning about topics I actually care about. When you take classes you care about, it doesn't seem like work and it’s fun. The work you put in corresponds to the understanding you get out of the class. Some professors are definitely better than others, but I feel as though no matter where you go that would happen. Don't worry about class size. I was worried about taking classes in huge lecture halls, but I liked my lecture classes better than my smaller classes. A word to the wise- make at least one friend in each class... if you miss a class, you need someone to fill you in on what you missed.
Am enjoying being here Whether you are the drinking type or not, for some reason people love calling Penn State one of the top party schools. I'm not a partier- at all and I still love PSU. There are so many things to do for fun. You can see free movies in the HUB. Last semester there was Eclipse, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Easy A, and Despicable Me just to name a few. You can go ice-skating and there is also laser tag and bowling. You will make so many new friends. Most likely a bunch of them will party, and if you don't they won't care. They will do their thing while you do yours...it's not a big deal.
Bang for the buck No one will deny that it is expensive. But the experiences you get make it worth it. I only applied to Penn State. If you get a couple scholarships, it really helps. Book prices really get you. Compare the prices online with the prices in the bookstore. Most of the time they are cheaper online, but keep in mind the price of shipping and the time it will take for you to get the book. Some of the things you pay for seem unfair... you have to pay for upkeep of the dining commons as well as a meal plan. An additional fee is also needed if you want to go to the gym. The gym membership isn't that expensive-- it is maybe $55 for a semester. If you don't want to go to the gym there are other ways to stay in shape. You can go for a run and go a different way every day of the week! You could also join a club sport or an IM sport. If you are having fun, and learning what you need for your future, Penn State will help you get a job... so it will be worth it. But if you aren't having fun, it isn't worth the money.
Tips for prospective students Get Involved! There are so many different clubs and activities that if you get bored, it is your own fault. The crazier you are at football games the better! Make sure to go to at least one football game in your college career. It is amazing to see 100,000 people screaming about the same thing. If you are into philanthropy, your THON committee will be your second family. I still can't believe how much we change the kids' lives. It is remarkable! Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and be yourself. That is the only way you will make friends that you will keep in touch with throughout your life.
Great for these types of students I hope you like a huge school. The first couple weeks you will be lucky to see someone you recognize. If you like football, you will love Penn State. The games are amazing. If you want to wear shorts in the middle of October however, Penn State isn't for you. I think I wore shorts through September and that was all. My first semester, it didn't rain 3 Thursdays the whole time (it would be wise to invest in an umbrella and a pair of rain boots). Make sure you don't mind walking to class in the wind and snow either. I slipped and fell right on my butt on my way back from class. I couldn't help but look at the 2 guys that saw my moment of gracefulness and laugh at myself. For the record if it happens to you, you aren’t alone! Just laugh at yourself for a second and hope someone comes over to help to you up!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot With over 23.000 faculty here at Penn State, the students are definitely learning from the best researchers and professors while also being given individual attention. Don't let the large class sizes scare you; those actually turned out to be my favorite! Those professors especially want to make sure everyone is engaged in the lecture.
Am enjoying being here The possibilities are endless at Penn State! Students have access to many unique places on campus: the HUB, where some take a break between classes, have lunch, or visit the Penn State Bookstore; the Pasquerilla Center, where you will find almost any religious group; Rec Hall, fitness center and home court to the National Champion's Women's Volleyball team; Eisenhower Auditorium and The State Theatre, each bringing in top entertainment acts from all over the world; Berkey Creamery, the reason we are Ice Cream U; the Bryce Jordan Center, home of our basketball teams and all things entertainment; and who doesn't love being part of the Number One Student Section in the country with our beloved Nittany Lions in Beaver Stadium!
Bang for the buck It always seems like colleges are just money hungry and want to take it all. There are always chances for loans, grants, and scholarships. Just remember that Penn State provides so many resources...job fairs, resume workshops, Late Night activities on the weekend, just to name a few. These are useful to everyone on campus and they need to be paid for somehow, and the buildings around campus need to be kept in good shape and clean to make it the beautiful campus that it is.
Tips for prospective students In the past, Penn State received the title of Number One Party School. For students worried about coming here because of that, I was once in your shoes. The important thing to do is find a group of friends that you can trust and that you can have fun doing other things with, like eating pizza and watching a movie at 1 A.M.! I would also recommend visiting Penn State during an open house session, Spend a Summer Day, or just stop by the campus anytime to see if you really like the campus and the surrounding areas. You don't want to miserable the next four years of your life if this isn't for you, and for some it's not. Don't be scared about the campus being home to over 40,000 other students either; most students when walking to class try to keep to themselves and you will also adapt to becoming more independent.
Great for these types of students Penn State is a great school for almost any major; the Colleges of Ag, Engineering, and Communications seem to stick out in my mind as being some of the top in the country. Penn State- University Park is great for those who came from larger high schools because they will adjust faster, but for me, who came from a much smaller high school, it was a great transition into learning to be independent and less afraid of public settings. If you love the idea of school spirit, you will definitely find that here when everywhere you go people are wearing the Penn State colors and logo. Altough it is a big campus, it is still located in a more country setting surrounded by mountains that will make anyone fall in love with the area.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State is one of the most prestigious public universities in the world. It is world renowned for its engineering and business school, but if you want to choose another major there are hundreds of other viable, respectable options. Penn State was recently named the number one school that employers at. With millions alumni worldwide, the networking opportunities are endless here.
Am enjoying being here One reason I chose Penn State is because of the unrivaled school spirit that Penn State Nittany Lions possess. We are proud to be Penn Staters. Whether you are walking through the HUB (student building) or at the student section at a football game you can tell everyone is proud to be here. There are thousands of clubs and activities to get involved with, but if none of them suit you, you can make your own club! Penn State has one of the largest Greek life systems in the country.
Bang for the buck Penn State is one of the most expensive public schools in the country, but worth every penny. Not many schools have the networking, career, or intern options you will have here. You will be able to secure a job with a Penn State degree and pay off any loans in several years.
Tips for prospective students Get involved. I know it sounds cliche, but you are now a small fish in a big pond here. It is easy to get lost in the shuffle, but it is just as easy to get your name out there and be the person you want to be.
Great for these types of students If you love having a great time, have a ton of school spirit, and are dedicated to your academics and furthering your education this is undoubtedly the school for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Pennsylvania State University is a fantastic and top-notch university. I have been here for one semester so far and I am confident that choosing Penn State was the best decision I have made thus far. Penn State provides an outstanding education. The professors really go out of their way in order to provide help. They all provide office hours other than the times that they have listed. If you need help all you must do is simply email that teacher and request that you meet with them for extra help. All of my professors that I asked were more than happy to oblige. Each and every professor is an expert in their subject and it shows in the lecture when they do not have to worry about how to teach the subject, but instead how to make it fun and appealing for its students. One example is in my CHEM 110 class. In this class my professor understood that this subject was not always the most appealing. So he would give live demonstration of what chemistry can do. One demonstration he gave was the explosion of hydrogen gas by filling a balloon with gas and the igniting it. It definitely woke me up from my nap and kept me engaged in the class. In addition to professors there are Teaching Assistants and the Penn State Learning Center. These two sources provide excellent opportunities to get free tutoring and extra help studying. This saved me the week of finals. Outside of this education I have already been able to begin research for my major of Electrical Engineering. I was able to get a head start compared to other students at different school because freshman usually don't start research their first semester, let alone their first semester.
Am enjoying being here Outside of an amazing education Penn State has offered ways for me to meet new people like myself and get involved in the community. One way I was able to meet new people was to live in a SLO (special living option) called the HEAL House. HEAL stands for Healthy Education and Living. This living option has a lot of people who enjoy living a healthy lifestyle, which is eating healthy and exercising regularly. We have grown into a family and it makes it incredibly easier to live a healthy lifestyle when all of your friends are doing the same thing you are. Penn State is also active in THON. THON is an organization which raises money for pediatric cancer. I am part of the HEAL House THON committee which raises money for THON. It is really enjoyable to participate in this organization. One of the great things we do go on canning trips. These trips have us travel to different states trying to raise money for pediatric cancer. We bond and have a great time together. We often find days to just go sightseeing. At our last canning trip we raised almost $3000. This has been an excellent start to my college career at Penn State.
Bang for the buck I am an out-of-state student, which means that my tuition is exceedingly higher. Even though my tuition is much higher than in-state students, Penn State is still a great school for its cost. For one price Penn State provides a university with tradition, high standards of education, research opportunities, and school unity that are hard to find anywhere else.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend any students coming to Penn State to get involved. It is really easy to start getting involved at Penn State. Once you’re involved you will make many new friends and connections that you wouldn't be able to make anywhere else. Also you should take the time to get together all of the available tutoring places on campus for each of your classes. Knowing when tutoring is offered will really help you manage you time. Lastly, GET FOOTBALL TICKETS. Perhaps one of the most exciting times at Penn State is at its football games. At these games students become unified unlike any other school.
Great for these types of students Penn State is perfect for your students who are well-rounded and your students who wish to advance faster than other students in other schools. There are many research opportunities for many different majors.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Terrific PGA-PGM program. Professors are fantastic.
Am enjoying being here The school spirit is amazing here - the football, the student sections at Beaver Stadium, the amount of things to do, it is a perfect campus.
Bang for the buck Expensive for out of state.
Tips for prospective students Should be an outgoing person - able to make friends quickly. This is a huge plus. This is not the campus to stay in your dorm room.
Great for these types of students Outgoing.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot In all of my classes, I have been learning a decent amount of information. Now that I've been in an English class for about half a semester, finding words to write papers is easier. In my Human Geography class, I've learned a good bit of information that has changed my perspective of the world. I'm more analytical of it now. My Calculus I class is alright, but sometimes I feel like my professor doesn't go over things well enough for me to understand them properly. My other classes are going well, and I enjoy them.
Am enjoying being here There are so many things to do here. I haven't been bored at all. I would have to go way out of my way to have nothing to do. There are a good amount of free activities here for students, such as the movie theater in town, special guest speakers and comedians, IM buildings for physical activity, and many other things!
Bang for the buck Penn State has so much to offer I feel like I'm getting a good bit for my money. The two things I have problems with are the cost of the meal plan and the fact that access to weight lifting facilities costs additional money. The meal plan has a base cost of $1250 and additional costs for how much food you want to eat. The base cost goes towards 'facilities' and not the food itself. Any of the on-campus dining commons allow you to use the meal points to buy food at 65% off, but if you just stick with the default 3rd level meal plan, the costs end up being the same as if you didn't have a meal plan and just paid the full price every meal.
Tips for prospective students As Penn State is known as a party school, I expect many students to come here expecting to party all the time. This school is way more than that, however. Coming here with that mentality will only cause you to fail and potentially get in trouble. I know some people who have been written up and had incidents with police over alcohol related activities already. You have to keep your head in the books so you get good grades and excel in classes.
Great for these types of students Penn State has something to offer for everyone. I would definitely say education, meteorology, engineering, agriculture and geoscientific majors are at a major advantage because Penn State is well known for each of these fields. They have somewhere around 180 majors though, so there's definitely going to be the major that an individual wants.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State is definitely a top notch institution. The professors aren't only wise and scholarly, but they're fun to listen to as well. There is a great mix of lecture hall-type classes, as well as small-sized classes that makes the learning experience great! If you're looking for a great, challenging education Penn State is the way to go.
Am enjoying being here The atmosphere here is amazing. I can hardly describe how great this campus is. The scenery is beautiful, the school pride is tremendous, and there are so many things to do at PSU. There are clubs for nearly everything, activities on and off campus, club and intramural sporting teams, EVERYTHING! You definitely won't get bored here, but be sure to stay on top of your studies!
Bang for the buck Penn State is definitely expensive, especially for an out-of-state student like me. The education is great here - one of the best in the country, but the fact that it comes with a high price tag still remains constant. If you're willing to dish out a lot of money, then the education is definitely worth it. You'll learn a lot, and benefit tremendously. If you want to save some cash, however, you might want to look somewhere else. PSU isn't cheap.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared! The classes are tough, but certainly manageable. Just be sure to manage your time well, study as much as needed, and always look for help if you need it. There are tutors everywhere here, and the professors are always willing to help. Just stay on top of things. Also, have fun!
Great for these types of students Penn State is great for many different students. If you're interested in engineering, PSU has an excellent program. Also, if you like to be surrounded by thousands and thousands of people, this place is just right. It's huge! There are lots of things to do, and you can definitely have fun here. The work, however, is challenging; so be able to mix fun with work. If you can do that, you'll love Penn State.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State University is a college with a wide variety of academic opportunities and all of high quality. The teachers know what they are talking about and they know how to teach what they know to the students. You are also taught a great variety of subjects and since you have to take various general education courses, you become a well rounded student. Even if you are, for example, an engineering student, you still have to take a natural sciences class or a sociology class, so there is a lot of learning going on. And because it is all so efficiently taught, you do not easily forget what you learn. I have been here for only seven weeks and I feel that I have learned more material and in more subjects than I did in an entire semester of high school.
Am enjoying being here A wonderful thing about being at Penn State is that you will rarely find someone who is not enjoying their stay here. Ever since the first day I was here I have really liked it because of the energy that is felt by everyone. I was happily received on campus since the first days and the university has put tremendous effort into making us (first year students) feel like we are right at home. There were welcoming celebrations that were for everyone and this really helped us get a sense that we are all part of a great community. And even today, there are so many activities and clubs available so that you can become part of smaller communities if the campus is too large for you. There are things from being part of the flying club, to being part of a committee for THON, the largest student run philanthropy in the world. Weekends are also wonderful here because there are events such as late night movies at social centers, making the Penn State experience extremely enjoyable and unlike any other one. There are many reasons for why Penn State University is called Happy Valley and theses are just a small fraction of the ones you will see if you come here.
Bang for the buck Penn State is certainly well worth the money. It is a great public university where one can get a great education and enjoy the process at the same time. The university has a wide variety of majors ranging from civil engineering to anthropology. It has so many that some of them are unknown to the average person. In fact, Penn State offers over 160 majors.
Besides academics, Penn State excels in sports too. It is a part of the Big Ten football division where the football team is highly respected across the country. Its home football games are quite the event here as well. They are one of the top things on the to-do list when attending Penn State.
Penn State also has many points of interest. It has the Beaver Stadium which is one of the largest stadiums in the world. It also has the Bryce Jordan Center also known as the BJC where basketball and volleyball games are held. One other tourist attraction is the famous Berkey Creamery which is the largest creamery in the nation.
Since Penn State is such a large campus, it has thousands of students walking around campus everyday. Because of this, the campus is diverse which means that there are many student organizations from across the world. This is a great way to experience different cultures without actually traveling to a country.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Am enjoying being here PSU gets a rap for being a party school, but that's not my scene. I was really afraid of being forced into becoming a loner and of being lost in the crowd, but I found a good, solid group pretty easily. The town of State College is awesome, downtown is so cool and accessible.
Tips for prospective students Don't be shy. The school is intimidating, but it is welcoming.
Great for these types of students Strong in spirit, ready to have fun, well-rounded students.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State really takes advantage of its size and resources. Professors are both well prepared and willing to help students. While some classes are harder than others, a student who keeps up with the work will find a challenge to be the most rewarding. The knowledge you gain in some of the courses offered here can transcend throughout the rest of your college career and ever further. The atmosphere and people on campus are very conducive to learning and getting involved in extracurricular activities. Everywhere you go you are presented with an opportunity to get involved with something you may be interested in. This both gives you a chance to gain hands-on experience and further pursue your interests.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Many of my classes are challenging, but the professors here (for the most part) are phenomenal. I've been in school since I was five, and I can honestly say in my first semester here alone, I've had probably three of my all time top teachers. They really care about their students and helping them understand the subject and not just memorize information for tests. They are understanding and just great people. It's a wonderful learning experience and makes it so much easier and enjoyable.
Am enjoying being here I absolutley love Penn State Main Campus. The atomosphere, the people, the scenery, the buildings, the school pride, the football games...there is not a single thing I dislike. If I could stay here forever I would. Some people say you can get lost in huge schools but I disagree. The bigger the school, the more people, the more opportunities to meet new faces and have different experiences. Every day and every new activity is an exciting adventure. You never know who you'll run into or what you'll be doing next.
Bang for the buck I'm an in-state student so I don't have to pay as much as out-of-state kids that I know, but they have said to me the same thing I feel. Penn State is worth the extra money. It's a top notch university but it's got a little bit of everything else too. Penn State is extremely well rounded and has something for everyone. If you're not into the whole football scene, the drama department is amazing, the amount of THON groups you can join is innumerable and the number other activities you can join is seriously in the 700s. Penn State is never a dull place to be and if you ever get bored, you must be trying really hard.
Tips for prospective students Go on the website and seriously check out all the different things Penn State offers. Division sports teams, club teams, intramural sports of every kind, dance teams, theater, THON, student government, greek life, yearbook, radio, news reporting, choir...the list goes on and on. Take a tour of the campus or better yet come stay with someone who already goes here. I was torn between Maryland, Delaware and Penn State until I finally came and stayed for a weekend. By the end of the first day I knew that Penn State was the only place for me.
Also - the summer before I came I participated in the ORION wilderness orientation trip. It was an intense experience but it honestly made my transition to college so much easier. I came into my first semester with 10+ friends already. I definitely recommend it to everyone.Great for these types of students If you love big schools, always meeting new people, lots of walking, intense school spirit, football mania and don't mind the chilly PA winters...this school is definitely for you. If you're not sure, come visit for a weekend or even a day. I guarantee that just one day will change your mind.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The atmosphere of Penn State University is like no other place that I have experienced. All students come together for great causes, such as THON, and act as a big giant community even though you do not know everyone on campus. The education and experiences of Penn State will shape your character for the rest of your life.
Tips for prospective students Come take a visit and experience everything that Penn State has to offer. If you make the decision to come to Penn State you will not be disappointed, there is always something for everyone here.
Academic Rigor The rigor depends on your major. For every major a good amount of work will be required but it is not unbearable by any means. The education you get will be worth it in the end with a Penn State degree.
Dorm Life East Halls dorms are small but the atmosphere is unforgettable. You have friends that are a couple doors down in the same situation as you so you go through freshman year with the same experiences. The walking through east halls each day will be remembered because you meet so many new people and faces and each one of you are freshman.
Food and Dining The food is okay but after a while you are going to become bored of the food and crave different foods. If you do not mind the walking to other commons then the food will be good because of all the variety on campus. Downtown offers many places to eat but that is not covered by the meal plan.
What to do for fun For fun you can go to a frat party, apartment party, or join a club to do activities on nights. I recommend joining a club for THON, sport or greek life. The key is getting involved.
Bang for the buck Places like Canyon, DP Dough, McDonalds are always a good choice if you don't want to spend too much.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Tailgating home football games, State Patty's Day, THON, Mifflin Streak.
Clubs and Activities Join a THON committee or club sports. Penn State offers numerous clubs for people looking for a specific activity to join.
Greek Life Greek Life is a major part of Penn State but not required to have fun while attending Penn State. There are many more things to do then just get involved in Greek life.
Campus Safety No matter the time at night or day you feel safe on campus. It is extremely safe to walk around at all hours with no fear of anything happening.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The Pennsylvania State University offers one of the most respected and excellent programs and educations in the world, with only a standard public school's tuition, letting people from a low income family can afford it as well.
Tips for prospective students The prospective students should prepare well in their high school or college that is currently attending, because the coursework at Penn State is going to be very challenging. We, as students of Penn State, should get well prepared before going there!
Academic Rigor As one of the most prestigious school of the country, and even of the world, it has a very strict policy to guarantee the progress and quality of their students. The flagship campus, University Park, extremely demands their student to do well and contribute the knowledge obtained to their local communities.
Dorm Life The dorm life is very good at Penn State U. It is because every campus is surrounded by farmlands, which makes it extremely quite and comfortable for learning. We would have a traditional college life with advanced resources provided by campus!
Food and Dining The food and dining is very good! The foodstore offers variety foods to students, which caters to the diverse populations of the students! Most students were satisfied with it!
What to do for fun The football match is EXTREMELY wonderful at Penn State, since it has the fourth largest coliseum of the world, located in the main campus. All students can feel free to participate the football match, which makes our college atmosphere excellent1?????
Bang for the buck The tuition is completely fair!!!!!!! Everybody is able to afford it
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are some beautiful ponds in the campuses, which makes our campuses a lot nicer! People will enjoy the environment here?
Great for these types of students Since the campus are away from the cities, we can have a completely different experiences from other universities located in the city. In our life, it is good to have different experiences, which can open our eyes to the world.
Clubs and Activities There are diverse clubs to cater the diverse population of the students. The activities are very good as well, we play footballs, swim, etc.
Greek Life The Greek life is quite wonderful. Greek people can organize their club to meet.
Campus Safety The campus is very safe, since many security guards are in the campus. All of them are far away from those dangerous cities, like Philadelphia, Reading, Pittsburg, etc.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Before coming to Penn State, I had applied to this school only as a safety but I knew I didn't want to come here. By the end of my first semester, I couldn't be happier that I ended up here anyway. Everything from the football games to the challenging courses to the diversity on campus is perfect for those that like the idea of a big school.
Tips for prospective students If you're into a more intimate environment with fewer students (more similar to high school), this isn't the school for you. Chances of you seeing the same people in multiple classes are slim to none until you start to section off into your major junior and senior year.
Academic Rigor If you slept through high school like I did, coming here will be a real wake up call. Natural intelligence won't take you far here, you have to put in the work and the sooner you figure that out the better.
Dorm Life Freshman dorms themselves aren't the greatest but the atmosphere couldn't be better. Everyone leaves their doors open year round so you really bond with the people on your floor. They're also the closest residence to Beaver Stadium so on game day you if you didn't get tickets, you can actually here the noise very clearly.
Food and Dining Not much to say about the food on campus... It's not the best but it gets the job done. The downtown area which is walking distance from the dorms has a lot of awesome places to eat but as a freshman, you're more likely to just stay on campus because it's cheaper.
What to do for fun If you're into the frat scene, there's hundreds of frats lined up on frat row that are always having raves and parties. If you're more into quieter apartment parties where you can actually hear each other talk, you have to get to know some sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have apartments. As far as movies and bowling and things like that, buses are available but inconvenient with groups of people so it's not something most freshman do. If you have a car, everything becomes much easier.
Bang for the buck It's a little bit on the expensive side.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Too many to list.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State is a great college town. With an incredible amount of opportunities, it's impossible not to get involved. I had no idea that college could be this manageable.
Tips for prospective students Choose a career path! Even if your not completely sure, make some sort of decision initially. Going in Undecided has its perks, but I find it easier to use great high school grades to get into a specific college rather than your first and second semester GPA.
Academic Rigor The work load is definitely a step up from high school, but you'll hear that from any college student. The amount of resources and help offered through the University is incredible. Free tutors, reviews, and office hours will become your best friends. Instructors make all of the work reasonable and are always available when you need help.
Dorm Life Dorm life is surprisingly not bad at all. If you choose to live in East Halls with the majority of the other freshmen here, you'll have a great experience. You get to meet and hang out with people who are in the same boat as you - making new friends, taking similar classes, and just getting adjusted to college life in general. With roommate agreements, quiet hours, and a great maintenance staff, the dorms are an overall great opportunity. Co-ed floors, special living options, and many other amenities are offered so look into your options at eliving.psu.edu
Food and Dining University Park's campus has a great amount of options. With your meal points, you can use any of the dining commons on campus and even use what we call LionCash at select restaurants in downtown State College. From salads, to sushi, even steak dinners! The food quality is great and very convenient.
What to do for fun The whole Party School image isn't as prominant as you'd imagine. Yes, of course, it's a college town and there are parties, but there is a ridiculous amount of other oportunities! Every weekend, the Student Programming Association (SPA) hosts what we call Late Night at the HUB. From games, to crafts, to movies, and even free musical performances and speakers there is always something fun going on. We also have a large amount of student run organizations.
Bang for the buck Low gym fees, free equipment rentals, and free on campus buses are just a few reasons why you won't need to touch your bank account. The university has done a great job by making everything affordable for college students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus If you know anyone who has ever been to Penn State, it's implied that you must take a picture at the Lion Shrine. A photo with our mascot, the Nittnay Lion, is something everyone seems to participate in. Football games are one of the greatest traditions here along with the great Joe Paterno, whose legacy will live on forever. The JoePa statue is another popular photo opportunity near Bever Stadium.
Clubs and Activities THON (the 46 hour dance marathon for pediatric cancer) is one of the best things to get involved with. It is a year round effort to help kids with cancer forget about the doctor visits and medical treatments for one weekend. Through individual orgs, you have the opportunity to meet new people, participate in life changing activities, and make an impact on a child's life. In my opinion, it is by far one of the best things that I have ever been involved with.
Campus Safety Safety is something that this school takes very seriously. Evey week, we get posters filled with saftey tips, numbers, and even some workshops. The campus offers escort services to walk you home if you don't feel safe late at night. Emergency telephones are situated in various locations around campus but are seldom used because of the sense of security you get living here.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State is an amazing school and environment. The football atmosphere is one of a kind and so is the students' spirit.
Tips for prospective students Live in East Halls your first year, you will make the most friends being surrounding by others your age.
Academic Rigor I am an engineer and many of my class deal with things I have never seen. It really depends on you major and interests.
Dorm Life I currently live in the dorms as a sophomore and I love it. As long as you talk to others, they will talk back. It is clean and the housing staff is very nice and efficient.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good, but it is the amount and different types of food to choose from that makes it five stars. There are also dining halls and places to eat no matter where you are.
What to do for fun The night life at Penn State is one of the finest in the nation. If you are not into that the University provides non-alcoholic fun as well. They hold events every weekend and it is something different every time.
Bang for the buck Penn State is one of the most expensive public universities in the state, but they are ranked number by recruiters. Penn State gives its students so many opportunities for their future and while still at the university.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus THON is the biggest student run philanthropy in world. It raises money for kids with pediatric cancer. I did THON, and it is an unbelievable experience. The bonds you make, and the things you see are simply amazing.
Clubs and Activities There are over three hundred clubs and organizations, and THON is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. There are so many things to choose from.
Campus Safety There are safety phones located all over campus and not far from one another. There are campus cops always walking around, and every residence hall swipe access.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The Pennsylvania State University has an amazing network of students and faculty. Once you are part of the family, it helps to feel more secure about landing a job after college. There are endless opportunities to take advantage of and all the tools of a successful future are available to you.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with the many clubs available on campus. It can be hard to meet new people in lecture halls, so clubs give you an opportunity to make new friends. Make sure to never travel alone at night because just like everywhere else, there are some security issues on campus as far as robberies and assault go. Always look up your professors on ratemyteachers.com before you take a class with them so you don't have to suffer through a bad class. Go to the career fairs offered on campus because they will greatly help you in finding jobs and internships.
Academic Rigor Most of the classes at Penn State are designed to be challenging and force you to think critically about the subject at hand. If you constantly go to class, study, and keep up with the course work then you can definitely succeed. The professors are all very experienced in their field and offer unique information that will allow you to excel in your major.
Dorm Life Although there are definitely some dorms that are much nicer than others, overall the dorms are manageable. The housing staff is amazing and do their best to keep the dorms clean and comfortable. Make sure you fill out your housing contract as early as possible though to avoid getting one of the less appealing dorms.
Food and Dining There are many options for food both on and off campus. Pollock dining commons is generally considered the best and is a buffet style place. There are many other dining commons that all offer their own options. In addition there is also HUB dining where you can go to get things like Panda Express, Sbarro, and Burger King. Of course, you can always just walk downtown and get any of the large variety of food that is there as well.
What to do for fun There is definitely a party atmosphere to Penn State but there are many other things you could do as well. You can go to Hub late night on the weekends where they offer concerts, movies, games, dancing, and crafts every weekend. There is an ice-skating rink on campus that also makes for a fun evening. You can take a bus to the movie theater or to a bowling alley and spend the night there. There is always a way to make a night fun at Penn State.
Great for these types of students Penn State is a great place for students who are looking to get involved and become part of a large network that will help them advance in their career. You should come to Penn State if you feel comfortable meeting new people because there are a lot of them here. You need to be willing to reach out to your professors and advisors because they will not do it for you. However if you do, the majority of them are very helpful and will do all they can to make sure you are set.
Clubs and Activities There is a huge selection of clubs and activities to become part of on campus ranging from student publications to one of the many THON committees. THON is a very dominant theme on campus and almost everyone becomes involved in one way or another.
Greek Life Greek life is very popular on campus however you can definitely still make a large group of friends and have a good time without joining in on the Greek life.
Campus Safety The actual campus of Penn State feels pretty safe during the majority of the time however it is always smart to travel with someone at night. The downtown portion of Penn State can get a little unsafe especially on weekends but is still fun as long as you are safe and travel with a friend.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State University rates very high with their employment rates. Penn State prepares the students for the real world. They challenge us in the classroom and out of the classroom, I really appreciate this!
Tips for prospective students The biggest thing to know is how to manage your time. If you can get this down, you will be successful! Make sure you study too!
Academic Rigor Penn State challenges their students academically. It's not easy, you are going to have to study. In the end, all the hard work is going to pay off!
Dorm Life Dorm life really isn't that bad. Make sure you get along with your roommate, this will make your year so much easier. Another tip, make friends with the people on your floor.
Food and Dining The food at Penn State is really good. Make your you eat in moderation, so you do not get your freshman 15 pounds. Pollack dinning commons is the place to go!
What to do for fun I suggest you join multiple clubs. Get in a THON group. THON is such an amazing experience that you will not want to miss out on!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Visit the Joe Paterno Statue. Of course, go to a football game if you have a chance too. Something not to be proud of but our school created State Patty's Day.
Clubs and Activities We have many clubs. Anything you want to do, their usually is a club for it.
Greek Life If you are not involved in sports, the Greek life is where it's at. It's a great way to make friends and to become involved.
Campus Safety Our campus is very safe. We have buses that take us around the campus. We also have polls that have an emergency button on them. We also have a lot of security around 24/7.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences An outstanding university that provides limitless opportunities for superb education, involvement in various clubs and organizations, and the all-important ability to network among peers and colleagues. Penn State goes above and beyond to properly interject a rich, cultural atmosphere while also staying true to the natural Pennsylvanian surroundings, and in doing so creates an enjoyable state for learning. Not only is this the perfect university to promote both independent growth and team-working capabilities, but also it is a place one can truly call home for some of the best years of his or her life.
Tips for prospective students 1) APPLY EARLY! The earlier you apply, the better chance you have of being accepted. Furthermore, if accepted, your date to schedule classes, take a tour of the campus, etc. will be based on how early you apply. Don't make the mistake of waiting until later and then having all of the good classes and time slots be filled for your first semester!
2) Make sure to visit RateMyProfessor.org so you can read up on Penn State professors before scheduling a class with them. Helpful students will often post comments and likes/dislikes about the class you're looking into.
3) Get involved! Nearly everyone will tell you this, but it rings too true. The more involved you are on campus, the more you're able to reach out and get to know a wide variety of people. It will also naturally increase your networking and communication skills for the better!
4) If you don't know what major you want to pursue right away, there's nothing wrong with that! I was in DUS for the first two years and it allowed me the proper time to feel out a vast number of possible career paths.
5) Make time to go to professors' office hours. Sometimes, classrooms are too big to ask certain questions. Teachers also love when students make it a point to go the extra step and seek help if they need it. Because Penn State is such a large university, getting that one-on-one time with a professor can go a long way to getting a good grade and understanding any difficult material.
6) Football is a BIG DEAL and so are getting football tickets. They're not the cheapest in the world (a bit over $200 for season tickets to home games) but make sure you're waiting online a few minutes before they go on sale and you know exactly what to do. The process is one of the most stressful things you'll do at Penn State, other than maybe scheduling classes in the same manner at midnight of the day you're allowed, as season tickets literally will sell out in 5 minutes. Have a backup plan, and definitely don't miss out on these!Academic Rigor The academics have a very wide range in terms of difficulty, content, and the professor that is teaching the class. Because of the university size, the major and minor possibilities are all but endless- there really is something here for EVERYONE to do.
Dorm Life The dorms are rather small, especially in East and Pollock Halls. For first year students, definitely try to live in East as it will be part of your freshmen experience. Yes the rooms are tiny, but being with thousands of other freshmen in the same area will really help you to make new friends and find new interests right off the bat- especially if you're a bit shy and nervous at first. After your first year in East, if you're thinking of staying on campus, you have four options left: North, West, South, or Pollock. North is reserved mainly for special living options and single room suites; Pollock is basically East but in a different location; West has the largest rooms out of the four and is located closer to the library and in a more serene setting; and South is a good mix of rooms that are both decent in size and convenient in location. I was lucky enough to live in South this year (in Atherton Hall), and it gives the perks of living in the dorms while also being in the center of campus. Even though housing contracts are based off a lottery system, most people would agree that among South halls, McElwain, Simmons, and Atherton are the best preferences to list.
Food and Dining Some of the dining halls will serve up food that basically resembles the slightest upgrade over your high school cafeteria (like East), but most provide enough options that you'll never get sick of where to eat on campus. Every area on campus (East/North/South/West/Pollock) has at least their own cafeteria/commons area in addition to a select few other spots to grab food. In addition, each area has a convenience store to stock up on snacks and room supplies. Out of all the possible places to eat, I can say most students prefer either the newly renovated Pollock dining commons for its contemporary feel, Redifer for its various selections, West dining commons for their fresh baked cookies, or the HUB for its convenience factor in the middle of campus. You can't really go wrong no matter where you eat, just make sure to check your meal points periodically and budget accordingly!
What to do for fun Get involved! There's never a boring moment on campus, with all kinds of clubs, activities, organizations, and sports for just about anyone! Penn State also brings in a few guest speakers from time to time, and they can range anywhere from legendary high school football coach Herman Boone to fast food phenom Morgan Spurlock. In terms of music, Penn State's location between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia also means that there will be a good concert or two every month (i.e. Drake, Lil Wayne, Elton John, the Goo Goo Dolls...just about everyone makes an appearance), so make sure to save up! Penn State also has free concerts every once in a while, and the most notable is the Movin On spring concert which featured Lupe Fiasco last year and will feature Ludacris this year. You should never find yourself bored at any point on campus!
Bang for the buck -While it might not be the healthiest, the late night dollar menu for McDonalds comes in handy all too often. It's also the reason the fast food restaurant will be one of the busiest places every weekend at 2 AM.
- Attend certain sports events that are FREE to students, like women's basketball, women's volleyball, and soccer games!Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus -Getting your picture at the lion shrine is a tradition that must happen at LEAST once while you're here.
-If you're a football fanatic, participating in Paternoville at least once in your college time is also a MUST.Great for these types of students Everyone will find their niche here.
Clubs and Activities Penn State was recently ranked #1 by the Princeton review for Intramural Sports. There are sports of any kind, both team and individually based, for everyone to enjoy. Whether you want to be less serious with an IM sport or more serious and try out for a club team, once again the possibilities are endless. I highly recommend going to the involvement and activity fair during the first week of school to explore anything that might interest you!
Greek Life With over 89 fraternities and sororities, Penn State has one of the largest Greek Life communities in America. Even better, various organizations include those of Academic Achievement, Service and Philanthropy, Leadership, Brotherhood & Sisterhood, Social, and Alumni Involvement. At least go to some of the rush events every organization holds in the beginning of the semester. I joined a business fraternity, and can say it has been one of the best decisions of my life. You will become best friends with everyone else, and the memories and impacts you have will last well after college.
Campus Safety Penn State makes sure everyone feels safe at all times, with auxiliary police constantly patrolling the campus and RAs on duty at night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State is an university with an amazing amount of school pride and sense of community. Even with large numbers, it is still easy to stand out and become an effective leader. Penn State is not just about football, but about graduating respectable, smart assets to society with a lot of pride for their school.
Tips for prospective students Get involved right away! Getting involved in a club, work or THON organization is the best way to make friends and establish your belonging here at Penn State.
Academic Rigor It is definitely harder than high school as it should be. Larger classes are hard to get used to at first but in a short time I got the hang of these college classes.
Dorm Life Dorms are small and you share a bathroom with twenty girls or more but there is still a lot of good times that you'll remember for the duration of your college years.
Food and Dining The food is good, nothing like home cooked meals by mom but just fine for a college student budget and a college student stomach.
What to do for fun There is so many things to do for fun that are aimed at your interests. At Penn State there is a club or sport for anything, literally ANYTHING! Pep rallies, any sporting events, THON are all great community fun events, but there are so much more things to do personally with your friends. Bowling, laser tag, ice skating and sports games outside are only a few! I would mention more if I had a bigger text limit, you just can't name them all!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Beautiful setting with an all around wonderful experience. I love the buildings for which the classrooms are in and I especially love the challenge I face with each one of my classes.
Tips for prospective students To make sure you prepare yourself for the difficult level of the classes you will potentially take.
Academic Rigor My first semester was a challenge but I soon settled in during my second semester after I went with my heart and changed my major to something I had a passion for. The academic challenge is absolutely there and for those that feel they are not challenged in high school you most definetly feel it here.
Dorm Life I have to say that I am not a big fan of the dorm life. I am not use to be people just coming and going as they feel throughout my room. I like my privacy and having to share showers and bathrooms with total strangers took a lot to get use to.
Food and Dining Over all there is a wide variety of food and the dining areas are always well kept. After awhile though you do start to miss your mom's cooking. As there is a wide variety of food, it is always the same variety.
What to do for fun At Penn State there is always something to do. If you ever utter the words I am bored, then I would have to say that you are not venturing out of room.
Bang for the buck The tuition is a little much I feel but considering that there are so many clubs and activities to keep you occupied I guess it balances it self out.
Campus Safety The campus safety is top notch! I am an 18 year old female and I am never afraid for my safety. I feel that we all look out for each other and respect the fact that we are all in this together.

Tips for prospective students if you like to have fun but also get your work done, penn state is the place for you.
Academic Rigor classes are difficult, but you will take something significant away from each one.
Dorm Life the dorms are always kept clean and the ras do a great job maintaining order in the buildings.
Food and Dining the food is what you would expect from a large cafeteria service. it is for the most part pretty good and always affordable.
What to do for fun penn state has something for everyone to do for fun. there are over 900 student organizations. the fall is exciting with a football game every week and thon brightens the spring. the party scene is huge, but there is always an alternative too.
Bang for the buck you can't beat the tuition of a state school. living costs are not too bad if you budget wisely.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a garden maintained and operated by botony students on campus. it is huge and contains some of the coolest plants i have ever seen.
Great for these types of students students who want to enjoy their college experience and have a good time, but aren't afraid to put a lot of work into it.

Tips for prospective students students that are interested in this university prepare to be challenged. make connections and do not procrastinate and success will follow.
Academic Rigor penn state isn't know for just football. it has one of the best engineering department in the nation. beware of those 'weed out' courses!
Dorm Life if you are a freshmen make sure to live in east halls, that's where most of the freshman live. everyone is new so everybody is trying to meet everybody. the other halls not so much so make your first year count!
Food and Dining all i can say is west halls dinning commons has the best cookies in all the land!
What to do for fun everything. pool, free movies, and dance parties in the hub. there is also countless restaurants in state college and bowling, and plenty more.
Bang for the buck a lot is included place to stay, food, countless of free events, but you have to pay for a gym membership.
Campus Safety there's a text alert that you can be subscribed to for any safety warning updates.

Tips for prospective students join as many activities as you can manage. the opportunities are endless, and you will form friendships for life, you will expand your experiences. do not be afraid to use any support that you need. this can only enhance your abilities and your experiences.

Dorm Life great. opportunities for developing interests and friendships are numerous.
Food and Dining excellent. my parents always want to eat on campus when they visit!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i couldn't be more content with my choice of university for undergraduate education. penn state has so much to offer for students like me who don't put a limit to their dreams: highly-ranked academics, endless extra-curricular activities, greek life, study abroad options, and more. the campus is named one of the safest in the country, and the atmosphere is so serene that i never want to leave.
Tips for prospective students if you want a campus-y school, you're in the right place. some people may first feel overwhelmed by the large size of the university, but within two weeks you will be comfortable with your schedule and the locations of the most important buildings. my best advice for students finding their niche? get involved. there is so much to do and so much to be involved in if you just look. also, thon is the most amazing organization i've ever had the chance to be involved with, and a lot of freshmen hesitate to get involved right away in the fall, so be on the lookout for ways to get involved with it! most importantly- do not get caught up on the social scene. you have to learn to time manage from the get-go or you will have trouble staying on top of your grades. you just need to keep the end in mind, and you should do just fine. this means that you should remember that you are at penn state to get a great education, so your classes and schoolwork should remain your first priority. college is the step before your career, and that is something that needs to be taken very seriously.
Academic Rigor penn state is named one of the country's public ivy universities. the academic rigor at penn state definitely reflects that. the professors are all highly acclaimed and the work load depends on how many credits you are taking that semester, as well as your major. as a science major, my classes are very challenging as i compete against thousands of others for entrance to my major in the next two years. professors teach in ways that challenge the students. no class can be labeled as easy, and the challenge is something that you want to look for as an undergraduate because it means that you are getting a quality education and that you are really getting the most out of it.
Dorm Life because their are so many students who attend penn state, the dorms are rather small. i don't have any complaints though. the bathrooms are cleaned daily, each floor has several different trashcans that follow an exclusive recycling program, and the rooms each have enough room (in my opinion) for all of the essentials. their is heat in the winter because it gets really cold, just not air conditioning in the summer. i didn't find that to be a problem because it starts to get cool in september, and you can just open the windows to get fresh air. each ra has floor bonding activities planned every once and awhile, so there fun things to do. each dorm complex has its own dining hall and study area, and each building has a floor designated with rooms for studying. there are also vending machines on the first floor of every building.
Food and Dining there are five dining halls located around campus, each offering a variety of different foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. there are places to eat in the hub which is located in a central location on campus. the hub offers fast-food places like sbarro, panda express, chick fil a, and burger king, as well as sandwich places and salad bars. it can get expensive eating in the hub-so beware. their are also two coffee places in the hub. there are convenience stores located in each dining hall. penn state also offers a website called lion menus, which features dozens of restaurants-pizza parlors, sandwich places, chinese, italian, and dessert places that you can order food right to your dorm or apartment. you can pay with cash, a credit card, or lion cash. downtown features over fifty restaurants and bars including chili's, subway, coldstone, dp dough, wings over, and other restaurants traditional to penn state. lets just say there are more than enough options when it comes to dining. most restaurants take lion cash.
What to do for fun aside from greek life and the frat scene, there is much more to do. different restaurants and ice cream places downtown, free concerts for students, comedians, guest speakers, and a free movie in the hub every thursday-sunday night. there is a local mall just ten minutes outside campus as well as several movie theaters. there are many bars for students of age, and a new nightclub coming this spring for students age 18 and older called levels. there is a sporting event for a different team almost every night. football season tickets are a must! football season is a lot of fun. there are also several shops downtown for some light shopping.
Clubs and Activities endless opportunities. if you can dream it, it's there. that is the only way to describe the activities available to students. with the 40,000 students on campus, there is bound to be something to do for everyone. volunteer opportunities, im and recreational sports, dance companies and clubs, and much more. there are clubs for almost every major as well as many organizations that fund-raise for thon, the university's largest philanthropy.
Greek Life i pledged my first semester to a national service sorority, omega phi alpha at penn state. it has been the greatest decision i have made their thus far and it helped me find my place. their are so many options for students wishing to be a part of greek life at penn state: service sororities and fraternities, panhellenic council, ifc council, national panhellenic council, and even fraternities for certain ethnicity's and majors.
Campus Safety i never feel scared or afraid, even when going back to my dorm at night. they offer bus services for free around campus and downtown. the buses run until 2 am through the week and until 4 am on weekends.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i am a very proud penn state student. penn state is an institution that wants you to succeed. people here all this talk about college's don't care if you succeed or not, they just want your money. that may be true but as long as you apply yourself and ask for help when needed, then penn state educators will do everything they possibly can to help you with school work, internships, tutoring, note-taking, work study, and so much more. the student body is one of a kind. never have i ever seen students come together the way penn state did in support of thon or any other charitable organization like breast cancer awareness, etc. penn state is one big family, and i wouldn't have chosen anywhere else to go.
Tips for prospective students if you have a question, ask for help. even if it's finding a building, ask a student walking. they will tell you where it is. college is a scary word and the first day it can be pretty scary. just know that it's normal to feel that way. it will pass. get involved in organizations, teams, clubs, fundraisers, anything! this is a great way to get out there and make friends and meet new people from around the world. don't procrastinate; if you get it done early, then you won't have to worry about it. in lecture halls, sit in the middle or towards the front. some professors will recognize you and know you by name(sometimes). you want a professor to know you by name. this means networking, and networking in college is very important. this will allow for internships and work study to arise.
Academic Rigor college is challenging; it's not easy. you have to remember that you are going to college for a reason, and that reason is to get an education so you can be successful in life. some people are able to cram the night before and get an a on the test the next day. some have to study a week or 2 in advance to get that a. everyone is different and you have to put the time and effort into success. penn state is very well known institution and academics are important. if someone goes to penn state just to party and have a good time, then a. they're wasting money, b. they're wasting their time, and c. students will look down upon them, because many many penn state students care about their grades and being successful.
Dorm Life it's an experience just like on any other campus. you have resident assistance (ra) who will be there if you have questions. many students form a great friendship with their ra's. living on campus gives you the benefit of going back and forth to your dorm instead of those who live off campus who have to sometime drive or take the bus to go to their apartment.
Food and Dining the food is great. there is always some place to eat on campus whether it be at one of the common's or at the hub. if you have a craving for burrito's, there's a burrito place inside the hub, or sushi craving, we have a sushi bar. there's even a burger king, chick-fil-a, starbucks, sbarro, panda express, soup and salad bar, and a hoagie/sub shop.
What to do for fun there are so many clubs and organizations on campus it's not even funny. if you're into weightlifting, there's gyms all around campus and even a weightlifting team. football games are always fun and even other sports games too; basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc. college ave is pretty popular among everyone. stores galore are on college ave and many restaurants too. you don't have to look very far to find fun, if you find a bulletin board at the hub or on campus, or even on an email, then all you have to do is read them.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus if there are tour groups, many students will yell we are... and the tour groups will respond with penn state!!
Clubs and Activities there are so many types of clubs and activities it's seriously hard to count and name them all. there are different types of dance teams, fencing teams, sports team, poetry/writing clubs, religious clubs and organizations, music, gaming teams, zombies vs humans (classic), thon committee, dances, collegiate future farmers of america, and many other agriculture clubs, and so many more.
Greek Life greek life can be a big deal for many people. it is definitely apart of penn state though. every greek does community service and is very much involved with thon. if you're looking to find another family away from home, greek is definitely great for that.
Campus Safety campus safety is very important. if it's the middle of the night and you're afraid or nervous to walk back to your dorm, you can call campus police and they'll escort you. there's emergency towers around on sidewalks too.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences penn state is a great university. that being said, your college experience is what you make it. you will not automatically have an excellent experience, you have to make it excellent.
Tips for prospective students there are plenty of people here to help you, you just need to ask. the classes are harder than anything you will take in high school, so don't be embarassed if you get lost or confused. most professors are willing to help you if you show you are willing to learn.
Academic Rigor your academic achievement is soley based on your effort. put in the time, and results will come.
Dorm Life i had a special living option, so i had housing a little nicer than typical freshman housing, but i had a really positive experience
Food and Dining they have plenty of options, if you are hungry for it, you can probably find it somewhere on campus!
What to do for fun there is a lot to do, explore the shops downtown, hit up one of the movie theatres, visit the nittany mall, attend a sporting event. your college experience is what you make it, so do whatever sounds appealing to you!
Bang for the buck i truely am a broke college student, but it will be worth it in the end.
Clubs and Activities there is a club for anything you can think of, and if you think of something new you would like to start, it isn't hard to do at all!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences penn state is the best of the three schools i have attended. they have helped me every time i needed help. i would recommend penn state to anyone.
Tips for prospective students never be afraid to ask questions. get involved because there are so many opportunities for fun and education.
Dorm Life i am not in a dorm.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus every semester they have a video game day that is a blast for the whole community. during the fall semester they have a haunted house for halloween that benefits thon.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the university lives up to it's reputation. penn state has a very clean and friendly campus. the staff is amazing and always willing to work with you.
Tips for prospective students penn state requires hard working, dedicated students. students that stay focused, tend to have an easier time adjusting to the academic part of college life.
Academic Rigor classes can be very hard. with proper time management and study techniques it becomes a lot easier to deal with difficult classes.
Dorm Life the people can be very nice but like everywhere there are a few loud and obnoxious people. the staff in the dorms are very friendly but some peers may not be. it usually is not a problem because you can choose who you want to associate with.
Food and Dining the food is pretty good. a very big upgrade from the food you would normally obtain in high school. there is a larger variety to choose from.
What to do for fun there are always on-campus activities going on throughout the week. you can also get together with friends and go out to eat, movies, and shopping at the mall. there is also bowling and ice skating off campus.
Clubs and Activities thon raises money for children with pediatric cancer and this year earned over 10.8 million dollars.
Campus Safety alcohol and smoking free campus. there are specific smoking areas where the students and staff can smoke.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences beautiful campus with hundreds of ways to get involved in any way you could possibly want to, from sororities and fraternities to philanthropies to musical endeavors to club sports and so much more. though there are 40,000 students on campus, it has that small-town homey feel, and is the perfect college setting. it's not just a football town!
Tips for prospective students bring rainboots and umbrellas, because you never know when it's going to rain in happy valley, and when it does you don't want to be the only soggy kid in class. rent your books, don't buy them, because you won't get as much money back as you spent. go to the involvement fairs at the beginning of the semester- the more organizations you become a part of, the more friends you'll make, and the more you'll love psu!
Academic Rigor the professors here are excellent, and all have fantastic credentials, though their teaching styles vary widely from person to person. there's always a decent amount of homework on your plate, but it's manageable if you stay on top of it, and penn state learning tutors are here to help if you need it.
Dorm Life they're steadily renovating all of the dorms on campus, and until they do, they rooms are a little outdated, but they do offer all the amenities that you need. the residence halls do a lot of community building exercises so it's easy to make friends in your building, especially in freshman dorms.
Food and Dining the food in the dining commons is amaaaaazing! there are five on campus, and each offer a different settings with individual atmospheres; your favorite will depend on your food preferences. off campus, there are a zillion places that accept lioncash for food, including but not limited to canyon pizza, kiwi yogurt, and wingsover, all of which are delicious options you must try during your stay here!
What to do for fun frats obviously offer one sect of entertainment with their parties (the theme parties are the best). then there's activities sponsored by the residence halls, like tie-dying or ice skating or stuff like that, that offers an alternative to partying for fun. there are always games going on, comedians and music artists coming to visit, fun things like dayglow and thon in the bjc, and so much more to keep you perpetually entertained.
Bang for the buck tuition costs are rising, just like at every other college. psu is a relatively expensive public university, but that's because it's so well-known, you're almost paying to be included in the alumni club. knowing people who also went to penn state helps you to get jobs and internships, and to get information before a lot of other college kids simply because you're going to a university with the largest alumni association in the country!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus of course, you have to get a picture your first day freshman year and your graduation day senior year at the infamous lion shrine, to document your growth as a penn stater. it's tradition to go get psu's famous grilled stickies at the diner on college avenue at least once during your time here. old main is the iconic clock tower that marks the middle of our campus, and laying on old main lawn in the sunshine after finals is a must.
Great for these types of students honestly, psu can appeal to anyone. it's seen as football-focused, but really there's something for the brainy kids, the musical kids, the jocks, the preppy social partiers, the multicultural, the techy, the artistic, and whoever else might find themselves in happy valley. i've never met someone who couldn't find a way to get involved in something they love on campus.
Clubs and Activities there's the quidditch club and the engineering association for the brainier of the bunch. there's club sports for anything you can imagine. there are frats and sororities for the social people, there's thon and relay for life for the philanthropic people. there's the enviromental club, the numerous a cappella groups, the big blue band, the football team, the dance teams, and so much more to occupy any student of penn state's diverse population.
Greek Life penn state has a fantastic greek system which, beyond hosting socials and sporting their letters on campus, actually contribute to psu events. the frats and sororities on campus can be social, professional, academic, or philanthropic, and almost all of them dedicate a few weekends a semester to raising money for thon to help kids with cancer. so yes, they're here for a good time and are great for making friends, but they're actually doing something, too.
Campus Safety there are emergency help boxes scattered across campus, and there's a number that you can call if you feel unsafe walking home alone at night for someone to come escort you. you have to have a penn state id to get into your residence hall, and that id only works to get into the residence hall you actually live in, so you're safe in your dorms, too.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences a great school for the sciences. be ready for a large campus experience. lots of knowledgeable professors and teacher's assistants to learn from and tap their previous experiences.
Tips for prospective students don't be shy about using all the online resources penn state makes available for campus, dorm and academic life.
Academic Rigor i've been challenged in the maths and sciences, but have been able to navigate with online tutorials and lots of self-study.
Dorm Life as a freshman, i heard horror story that the rooms were crazy small and it's noisy all the time. i have not found this to be the case. i share a room that has ample storage and fine beds. the noise level is surprisingly low during the week, as everyone is studying, and moderate on the weekends.
Food and Dining i'm not a picky eater with no dietary limitations so i haven't had a problem getting my money's worth from my chosen meal plan.
What to do for fun campus life is varied and extensive from intramural sports to clubs, fraternities and sororities, billiard lounges, movies, theater experiences, community service projects and so much more.
Bang for the buck for a reasonably priced state school, you can't beat the top notch professors, program offerings, advisers, online classes, tutoring, and the networking.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus thon. a tradition in fundraising for so many years, it has a life of its own with record setting funds raised for a fantastic cause.
Great for these types of students great for self-starters, social, and academically serious.,
Clubs and Activities as a freshman, i've been experiencing outdoor club and soccer. both great for relaxation and stress relief.
Greek Life i can't speak to this as i have not pledged.
Campus Safety security is visible. dorms are id access only, as well as the fitness centers and common areas. it is well lit and transportation is provided.

Categories Rating Comments Food and Dining the food is great! the dining commons offers alot of different varieties, even if you are a vegetarian! and the hub has alot of great places to eat as well if you are on the go between classes. and the new addition of starbucks is always a plus.
What to do for fun there are so many things to do. there are always great shows and concerts like cirque du soliel and lil wayne at the bryce jordan center on the weekends, as well as basketball games (which are free for students!!). the foot ball games in the fall are a full day of fun! and during the week, there are always so many things going on on campus that you will never be bored.
Bang for the buck best bang for your buck are the $5 fishbowls are bar bleu.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus an unusual tradition is when your a senior in the spring semester, some people will go to cafe 210 west everyday for the semester and get something and then if they are successful, they will get their name on the wall inside that will be there for as long as the cafe is.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i would rate penn state as a 9 because it is one of the best schools in america. we are number one when it comes to students getting recruited for different companies. the atmosphere is amazing here and i wouldn't trade it for the world.
Tips for prospective students i would definitely say don't make yourself a number. make yourself a known to professors and different advisers around campus and your stay here at penn state will be amazing.
Academic Rigor penn state demands a lot out of their students. i would not lie and say that penn state is easy because it is not and they challenge us to the highest potential. academics are a huge here and should be taken very seriously.
Dorm Life the dorm life is as any other college around the country. the rooms are not as big has a normal room would be but it is livable. i enjoy the times i have with my roommates. because you and your roommates are in the same position, you become to appreciate each other since you both are in the same place of being a freshmen.
Food and Dining the food is something that i could live without. the food is good sometimes but i tend to get very bored with the food selection because it is the same food everyday. but it is pretty good though, you just get sick of it after while.
Campus Safety campus is very safe. i am always comfortable to walk outside late because their are always cops all over and there are emergency phones all over if you do feel unsafe.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences going to this school has had such a positive impact on my life. not only have i learned a lot academically, but i have learned a lot of life lessons and have made a lot of friends. this school is definitely a life changing place.
Tips for prospective students if you are considering penn state, congratulations! this school is full of amazing people, students and professors alike. i have had so many positive experiences here. the number one tip i can give you: if you are living with a roommate, whether it's in the dorms or in an apartment, try to be friends! you are living together and if you cannot get along, your life is going to be difficult. also, yes it is important to study, but it is also equally important to have good safe, legal fun. do not think you will get away with everything you do, because it can and likely will catch up with you.
Academic Rigor most professors will push you to do your best. because i went to a branch campus before transferring to state college, i have never been in a class with more than 100 students and all of my professors have known my name. get to know your professors, ask them questions, and do not be afraid to visit them during office hours. you and/or your parents are paying them a lot of money to teach you so squeeze as much information out of them as you can.
Dorm Life dorm life depends on which dorm you live in and how your roommate is. i was very fortunate because 1) i'm very close to the bathroom, 2) i'm on a floor with a laundry room, and 3) my roommate and i get along very well. unfortunately, we are on a sorority floor and neither of us are in the sorority so it can be difficult to get work done when they are getting ready to go out.
Food and Dining there are so many dining options on campus, from quick, made-to-order meals to the dining commons where you can just hang out for a while. the food is obviously not your momma's cooking (and maybe that's a good thing) but it is not always very healthy and there is always creamery ice cream which is very hard to resist. these factors make it very easy to gain the freshman fifteen (and then some).
What to do for fun there is endless fun here. there are parks, pools, tennis courts, baseball fields, volleyball courts, movie showings, concerts, comedians, restaurants, bars, places to hike and ski, countless clubs, fraternities and sororities, and many friends to make. if there is something you enjoy doing, you can very likely do it here and it is even more likely that you can find a club that does it all the time.
Bang for the buck although penn state is the most expensive state college in pennsylvania, you are getting a great education and the name to go with it. penn state alum are very likely to hire other penn state alum, and even those who did not graduate from here usually gravitate towards those of us who will/did graduate from here (unless of course they are ohio state or pitt grads).
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus thon is penn state's greatest event in my opinion. every year, students involved in thon collect donations and then hold a 46 hour dance off where the dancers have sponsors that donate for each hour they dance. all of these donations go to helping find a cure for pediatric cancer and to families who are battling pediatric cancer. state patty's day is also a huge event in state college, although it is also a time to make sure you are looking out for yourself. there will be a lot of people under the influence of one or many substances, most likely though, alcohol. this is a time of great fun, though, and definitely worth enjoying.
Clubs and Activities there is a club for every interest, from cooking to knitting to fencing, the list goes on and on. but, on the off chance that there is not a club that features one of your interests, you are encouraged to start it. there is also a fair every year for students to see which clubs they may be interested in. there are also so many activities, especially on the weekends, that it is very hard to say that you're bored while you're here.
Campus Safety this campus offers so many safety features, from the id required entry to dorms, alarms on exterior dorm doors, emergency blue light posts (on which you can simply hit a button and speak with someone at the police station on campus if there is an emergency), to my favorite, the escort service. the escort service is a 24-7 service that you can call and they will send a rover to meet you wherever you are on campus and up to one mile off campus and they will walk (or drive if you're going far) you to your destination. i love this because on nights that i work, there usually is nobody to walk with me besides the rover and the buses have already stopped running for the night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences penn state has a great academic, reputation regardless of what you major in. even so, the politics and administration will make you want to run the other way. the amount of money my single-parent has to pay for my eduation is absolutely ludicruous!
Tips for prospective students attend a college which fits your budget. once you find that school, work as hard as you can and do not get caught up in all the social acitivities. there are way too many! most students fall into this trap and end up being enrolled for 5 plus years. beware!
Academic Rigor penn state's academic rigor is high. it's sort of like attending an ivy league college. many of my peers drink a great deal due to all the stress. i on the other hand exercise and call home when the pressure starts to set in.
Dorm Life i love dorm life, but i do find that it can be very noisy at times. when i have to study, i go to the library and spend most of my hours there! don't get caught drinking on campus, or you will be arrested. there is a no tolerance rule. otherwise, dorm life is great if you are matched with the room mate of your choice.
Food and Dining i am at penn state berks which is located in wyomissing, pa which is right outside of reading. the food is awful! i have never had to eat so much unhealthy foods in my life. i transfer to the state college next semester and i cant wait because the food at the main campus is amazing.
What to do for fun i became a member of just about every club on campus, mainly because wyomissing is a very rural area, and there is not much to do. if we want to have fun, we have to drive two hours to the main campus, which is located in state college.
Bang for the buck penn state university is an over priced college and adminstration cares nothing about the students. all they want is the check! they can be rude and obnoxious! i can't want to graduate, because i feel sorry for my single-parent mother!
Great for these types of students penn state berks campus is great for people who just want to study, because there is no night life or fun activities in the area.
Clubs and Activities i joined just about every club, which is why im always busy. being involved in campus life is the best thing to do from day one! i know just about everyone on campus.
Greek Life i do not involve myself with greek life. i have been to a couple of their parties and enjoyed myself very much!
Campus Safety penn state berks is a very safe campus. almost too safe.

Academic Rigor academics are always important stay up in your studies.
Dorm Life the dorm life is fun everyone is family and it is like living in your own community separate from what you are used to at home.
Food and Dining the food is great and so is the staff. there are several different types of foods to choose from and i think that they have different food choices for everyone.
What to do for fun whatever you choose to do for fun with your friends is what you choose fun is what you make it out to be.
Bang for the buck this school is a bang period.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the school is basically a typical town. we come up with our own traditions but there really is not anything unusual about them.
Great for these types of students there are honors programs. all different types of sport choices. this university has something for everyone.
Clubs and Activities blue and white society. thon. different dance teams. theater\ clubs.
Greek Life i havent really explored it yet..

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences penn state is well-known for it's engineering program. a large number of businesses recruit from penn state. penn state graduates are more likely to find a job.
Tips for prospective students develop good study habits during your first semester but also become involved in campus organizations/clubs.
Academic Rigor penn state's academic setting, courses offered, and professors can be as rigorous as you want to make it.
Dorm Life i am currently living at home for my first year and commuting to campus. i have friends in the dorms and they seem to like it.
Food and Dining a wide variety of food can be found on campus and in the downtown area of state college. it is reasonably priced and student discounts are available with a student id.
What to do for fun penn state football, enjoying the outdoors, many clubs and organizations to join.
Bang for the buck it is a great school for networking it also has state-of-the-art research facilities.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus penn state football season with it's pep rallies and students camp out a few days before games for tickets.
Great for these types of students penn state is a university for those students who enjoy a larger school and all the diversity, yet still located in a small town setting.
Clubs and Activities there are many diverse clubs and activities from intramural sports, to non-denominational clubs to arts, service and major related clubs.
Greek Life i am currently not involved in greek life but there are many sororities and fraternities close to campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This school is amazing. They have every club and class you can imagine. They even hold events sponsored by the student organizations to make sure everybody becomes involved.
Tips for prospective students It is okay if you don't know what you want to major in yet. With all the classes here, you will probably wind up changing your mind anyway!
Academic Rigor Many of classes aren't too hard, but it is important to go to as many classes as you are able and remember to study because many of the exams are much more intense than the classes.
Dorm Life The rooms, bathrooms, stairs, and hallways are all kept as clean as possible in a college dorm. People also respect the quiet hours, most of the time anyway.
Food and Dining I have to be on a gluten free diet and not only do the chefs accommodate me, but there is a separate gluten free menu in all their commons' areas, but the food is delicious as well. There are also many accommodating restaurants in the State College area with delicious food.
What to do for fun There is every type of club imaginable here, and if you can't find one you like, you can create your own with a group of your friends. There is also a bowling alley in the area and a movie theater on campus, as well as various sports fields, courts, pools, and gyms. The school hosts concerts, parties, and plays. There is definitely something here for everyone.
Bang for the buck This school has everything. Enough said.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The lion shrine is a great photo spot, Old Main is the main gathering place for groups of people, and there is also a nuclear power plant at the edge of the campus that sometimes gives out tours, but not many people know about it.
Great for these types of students The school is perfect for anybody.
Clubs and Activities Every. Club. Imaginable.
Greek Life There are many fraternities and sororities on campus, but since I don't know much about them, I can't really rate this category accurately. However, I have not heard anything bad about them.
Campus Safety Of course things happen because they always do, but there are blue light emergency phones every 100 feet or so and the campus is constantly being patrolled by campus police (their station is on campus) and state college police. I feel very safe walking around here.

Penn State is an intelligent and thinking school.
Penn State in State College is it's own little bubble and feels like a family.Tips for prospective students Expect to work hard and play wisely!
Academic Rigor Expect to work hard if you want to do well.
Dorm Life Dorm life sucks, BUT, it is a necessary evil the first year and actually does serve a purpose of learning how to live with others.
Food and Dining The food is decent and there are many choices.
What to do for fun Where do I start as to what to do for fun! There are so many choices so If you can't find something you like you're not looking! Sports, fitness, art, Fraternities and Sororities, dance, fishing, caving, political, volunteering and everything in between is available!
Bang for the buck College just should NOT cost so much period! That said, even with the recent scandal Penn State has a supreme reputation and holds a lot of weight when it comes to getting hired.
Campus Safety I feel safe.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor Penn State is a tough work load, definitely no easy 'A's. You can easily get away with not going to class because professors don't typically take attendance. This can be a bad thing if you skip though because it is very easy to fall behind, trust me.
Dorm Life Living in East Halls as a freshman is bitter sweet. The dorms are absolutley terrible and you are secluded from the rest of campus. However, this is a great place to meet and adapt to new people going through the same adjustments.
Food and Dining Depending on where you eat you can get some decent meals with a meal plan. I recommend eating at the south dining commons or west. They provide you with the best variety.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State was a large beautiful school. It offered many different fields for students to choose to major in. There were many activities to do, organizations to join, and people to meet.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to study hard and get to know your professors well. They will help you and even offer letters of recommendation when they become more familiar with you.
Academic Rigor very tough in certain courses, gym classes obviously act as a nice break.
Dorm Life its there if you want it and apartment life if you would prefer that instead.
Food and Dining lots of different dining halls, can always find what you want
What to do for fun Tons of activities to do. No matter what you are into, they have a club for it, and if not you can easily start one up.
Bang for the buck I think it was a little too pricey to be honest.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Not really, everyone attends the football games and it is a lot of fun to even just sit out with your friends and tailgate if you don't have tickets. Just be smart and don't cause trouble.
Great for these types of students If you love being active, being surrounded by a lot of people, don't mind being in a larger classroom environment then this is the place for you.
Clubs and Activities anything you like you can find there and if you don't find it for some reason you can start a club up.
Greek Life Greek life is definitely present if you want it and can be easily found. If your not looking for it, then you wont even know its there. The campus is big enough to find what you want and avoid what you don't want.
Campus Safety pretty safe for the most part, like anywhere else, be smart about where you walk, what time it is, and who you are with.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Being at such a large university I was aware that my class size would be large, but I was unaware of how difficult it would be to learn in a lecture setting. The smaller class sizes help me to learn, as well as the one on one time with TAs in their office hours.
Am enjoying being here Being at PSU is quite the experience. I love the campus life, there is always something going on and something for everyone. Whether it be a Tuesday night or a Saturday night, Penn State is alive from morning til late night.
Bang for the buck The expense is burning a whole in my pocket. Other than the high tuition for out of staters, the education and experience are amazing.
Tips for prospective students For any prospective students, for lack of better terminology, have all of your ducks in a line before coming into school. Make sure you have an academic plan set up for at least your first two years, as classes are difficult to find if you don't have everything planned out. Also, be aware of the cost of tuition, and have a plan for how to supply for yourself throughout your time at PSU.
Great for these types of students This type of University is great for students whom are ready to be very independent and are not afraid to start as a nobody and make something of themselves. At the same time, the student needs to be outgoing enough to become involved in the many opportunities offered at PSU.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Whether you are sitting in a small, intimate class or a giant lecture hall, the professors at Penn State not only know what they are talking about, but are passionate about the topics they are discussing. Teachers with such passion are the best kind because they truly care about this aspect of your education, and genuinely like doing what they do. As long as you take the time to listen, you will learn intriguing information that will stay with you, even when the class is long gone.
Am enjoying being here Narrowing down which college I would attend was a tough process last year, but after attending one semester at Penn State, I can't imagine being anywhere else. This school and community is a home away from home where your floor mates become your best friends, study partners, and family. The classes, professors, and resources are great, while the social aspect is more than I could have ever imagined. Though I have only been here one semester, I have seen school spirit like no other, and the Lion’s pride I feel is something I know will never fade.
Bang for the buck Penn State is known for being one of the most expensive state schools, but it is also known for being one of the best. Yes, the tuition is a little pricey, but is worth every penny. For one, the professors are outstanding. You can hear the enthusiasm when they speak, and the information you will learn is like no other. The resources the school provides is another reason why this school is a step (or two) above the rest. The library is filled with endless floors of books enough for someone to become lost, but don’t worry too much; the librarians are there to guide you and take you directly to what you need. Lastly, something this school has that no other university comes close to having is the networking. When it comes to finding jobs, not only will a Penn State degree look prestigious and impressive, but it is very likely that your future employer has a Penn State degree as well. One out of every 127 degrees out there came from Penn State, so lets just say we already have an advantage.
Tips for prospective students The most important advice is to stay focused! College life can and will be fun, but don’t let it be too distracting. Make sure to have fun, but don’t let it pull down your grades. If you want the full college experience, going out on the weekends is going to happen, but in order to maintain this “college experience” you have to remember one thing: You must stay in college. So please, keep up your grades and do your best.
Great for these types of students Penn State is not great for one type, but is great for all. It’s a big school with many majors, yet you can find your own small community within it. It’s in a beautiful rural area, yet it is a city itself. It can be quiet at times, and extremely loud at others. It is a school that can be personalized by every student, where the school provides many aspects, but we pick which ones to use.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Classes at Penn State are very big, but I've made lots of friends! And there is lots of tutoring and study groups available for my major classes.
Am enjoying being here Penn State has a huge campus, so there is plenty of room, but I find that not all college students at Penn State are devoted to their studies as I am. Also, being from a big city like Philadelphia, I noticed that there aren't a lot of things to do around town.
Bang for the buck Penn State doesn't cost as nearly as much as other private schools. Dorming on campus is really expensive, but with a few scholarships its well worth the price!
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should try to do their first two years at one of the Penn State branch campuses. They're smaller, have smaller campuses, and the tuition is a lot cheaper. After the first two years you will have a feel for college life and can move up to the bigger, main-campus at University Park and take all of your major- related classes.
Great for these types of students Anyone who wants to be at a big, spacious campus!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Here in UPark the teachers really challenge you. They expect you to know certain information and if you don't it forces you to go and look up the information. You acquire so much information and learn a lot throughout the years
Am enjoying being here I love the environment because I feel right at home. It rarely ever feels like a big school, I feel like I am a part of a community. Only being here for a year I have already made so many friends and found clubs that relate to my interests. Being here has been a great experience.
Bang for the buck Yes, Penn State is pretty expensive but getting a degree from here will get you so many opportunities out of college. Having a Penn State degree you are more likely to find a job right out of college compared to other colleges.
Tips for prospective students The only major suggestions I have for upcoming freshman is learn good study habits and come here with an open mind. Acquiring good study habits ahead of time will make your time here that much easier and if you know what you are majoring in or have no clue what to study come here with an open mind because there are so many opportunities and classes that may capture your attention. I know when I originally came here I was a Pre-Med major, but after taking a communications course I enjoyed it so much I switched my major to communications. So come here with an open mind and that will make your experience that much more enjoyable. Also, I would suggest trying to apply for any scholarship you can because every little bit of money helps.
Great for these types of students If you love being surrounded by large amounts of people in a big setting then you will enjoy this school. Coming from a small town in Jersey where no one even recognizes the town name adapting to Penn State was extremely easy. The people here are really open, friendly, lovable and make you feel a part of the community.

Bang for the buck While i do think that Penn State is kind of pricey, I believe that its well worth the money. Penn State is a well known school with amazing academics so I think its worth every penny in the long run.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot You officially enter your major in your junior year. I wish I had learned more in my first two years.
Am enjoying being here Penn State is called Happy Valley for a reason. The campus is beautiful, and you can feel the school spirit. You will definitely feel proud to be a Penn Stater.
Bang for the buck Being an out-of-state student, I pay almost three times as much as Pennsylvania residents do to attend Penn State.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of all the fun things to do on campus. Also, do not be afraid to make friends! My floormates from my Freshman year are still some of my closest friends.
Great for these types of students Students who can balance getting their work done and having a good time.

Will enjoy being here The atmosphere is extremely welcoming and the people make you feel like you're at home. Every student has an overwhelming sense of school pride.
Bang for the buck In-state and out-of-state funding is less expensive than most colleges that offer what Penn State does.
Tips for prospective students I do not attend Penn State, but I am most definitely applying here this fall!

Bang for the buck Great experience, but very expensive.

Great for these types of students Higher-income families or students who received a lot of aid. Other than that, it is a great atmosphere with very friendly people and a very diverse student population.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State is a top rated university with a countless amount of research opportunities. The experience you can gain here will help you stand out from other applicants in future job/grad school applications. The professors are willing to help you with any questions you have on their lectures too.
Am enjoying being here I'm so glad I made the decision to come to Penn State. The town is great, there's plenty of shopping/ places to eat. Also, the parties here are so much fun. You can always find something to do on any given weekend.
Bang for the buck The tuition can be pretty expensive here but it is completely worth it for the quality of education you will be receiving.
Tips for prospective students With so much going on on campus all the time it's hard to focus on your schoolwork but, it is important to set aside time each day to study. It makes it easier to balance school and fun at the same time.

Will enjoy being here The campus was great and the studends even better. I prefer to ask students any questions as opposed to just asking faculty and everyone was more thaan helpful explaining all the things to do and all the extras Penn State has to offer.
Bang for the buck I looked into many schools and Penn State was amoung my top choices when it came down to affordability Penn State took top of my list making my decision in choosing it very easy. why pay a fortune for the same college experiance you can pay half for.
Tips for prospective students Bring a positive attitude and don't be afraid to ask questions everyone is so helpful here.
Great for these types of students Speaking for myself I'm a single mother and Penn State makes it easy to work with my schedule. I have a mixed family and whenever I stop by with my kids everyone is more than open. as long as your here to learn Penn State is great for everyone.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I originally started out at the berks campus which had very small class sizes. This really aided in my ability to learn and interact with the professor. After a year at berks I moved up to University Park. The class sizes are much larger. I find that it is a little more difficult to learn and sometimes more difficult to interact with professors but over all I feel like I learn a lot when I go to class. I appreciate the many different styles of teaching the professors have and I feel like the diversity in teaching styles will help me more in life.
Am enjoying being here I really enjoy being at Penn State. The people are nice and there are so many clubs that as long as you try you will find something that you can belong to. I enjoy the campus. It is very scenic around campus and peaceful and then when you head down town you have a little bit of the city life.
Bang for the buck I find it to be a bit pricey. It is said that it is one of the most expensive public universities in the country. However it is worth the price and if I could go back in time I would make the same choice.
Tips for prospective students Start off right!! Go in your first year and do your best! Don't slack off and then plan to catch up later. Also learn the different buildings and I would suggest walking your path to each class before the first day of classes so you know where to go and can get there without any difficulties. Last but of course not least be aware that time managements skills are a must and start working on them.
Great for these types of students Its a great place for anyone who wants to learn yet enjoy there time at school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This top notch university doesn't mess around. I was never challenged in high-school, was always 3 steps ahead of everyone, and in turn became lazy. I didn't realize how lazy I was until I started my freshman year at Penn State. The school certainly stepped up to my expectations, and forced me to change my study habits. I've compared my learning experience with others from state and private universities, and Penn State University ranks extremely high on both their quality of teachers and the amount of material learned. All of the teachers are willing to help you achieve your goals, and the free student tutors make it easy to keep up with the material.
Am enjoying being here Penn State is like no other university out there. As soon as you begin your journey here, you can't help but feel like part of something huge. I knew nothing about colleges when I started my college search. This includes the Big Ten universities and their sports teams. Even without this knowledge I immediately fell in love with the campus and it's inhabitants. The campus is full of life and I can say that during my first year here it went above and beyond my expectations. There is never a single night where there isn't a big event going on somewhere on campus, and the friends you meet there are definitely ones that can last you a lifetime. I myself wish I had more than 3 years left on this campus. Beware though, you may fall subject to homesickness during the summer. The campus is so great that I miss it a lot when I'm away.
Bang for the buck Yes, it is a state funded school that costs more than other state universities, but that doesn't mean you won't get your money's worth. Penn State is currently ranked first for employment after school by fortune 500 companies. While this doesn't guarantee you a job after graduation, it does give you a major edge in the job market.
Tips for prospective students Let's be serious. Penn State University is very well known for it's partying and it's huge Greek system. Don't let this defer you from the college though. It is still a great campus that offers many opportunities that no other university can.
However, if you do choose to party during your college career, don't go overboard. Many first year students screw up their GPA first semester, and it comes back to bite them either through a constant worry of academic probation for the rest of your career, or through a swift kick out of the university. DON'T let that be you. It's ok to party, but remember why you are going to college. It sure isn't to throw your life away.Great for these types of students A student who is organized and responsible is Penn State material. Without this you will struggle. Social butterflies will love this campus. With 45,000 students on campus, you better be willing to deal with people.

Am enjoying being here I absolutly love attending Penn State University. Coming from Illinois, I thought it would be hard for me to deal with being so far from home. I was wrong! Making friends was easy, especially with going to the home football games. I'm proud to say Penn State is my new home. I don't want to leave.
Bang for the buck There is so much to do around University Park. With 40,000 people, there is always something to do. Since University Park (State College) has it's own area code, it's basically a college city! With your Penn State ID card, you can recieve discounts from resurants, the bookstore, and other areas.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you apply to the campus you want, there are over 20 Penn State campus's. Also make sure you see the requirements for your major and which campus' have your major.
Great for these types of students Students who may want to ease into a large college by going to a small satellite campus of Penn State for their general education credits. Also students who love a great football game and a lot of school spirit.

Bang for the buck Best school for a great price.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot When you begin taking classes that pertain to your major, you will find that the professors are usually knowledgeable and helpful. Even general education classes are challenging, and most students take them seriously. You can expect to learn a great deal, but it is important to distinguish the difference between learning and getting top-notch grades. The standards at Penn State are high, so it is important to recognize that you are there to learn, not necessarily to graduate with a 4.0. Strive to learn as much as you can, and the good grades will follow.
Am enjoying being here I think that one reason why Penn State is known for excellence is because the students have created a culture of hard work and school pride. This is one of the great advantages of the school - rubbing shoulders with other students who are passionate about their interests. The weather isn't great however; it's positively frigid in the winter, and it rains frequently in the fall and the spring. As a general rule, students at Penn State work hard, but they also enjoy themselves on weekends, which can be fun, as long as it stays responsible.
Bang for the buck Penn State is very expensive, especially for out-of-state students. The most important thing in terms of getting your money's worth from Penn State is whether or not you can get a job in your chosen field. Penn State was ranked #1 in the Wall Street Journal last year for universities whose students get good jobs right out of school, so hopefully that will continue to be the case in the coming years.
Tips for prospective students 1) Buy a down coat. Trust me. It will be worth it.
2) Don't miss classes.
3) Make time to work out, and try to eat healthy most of the time.
4) Get involved on campus, and you will enjoy yourself much more.Great for these types of students Penn State is a great place for students who are competitive and outgoing. Students have plenty of opportunities to excel and network in any major, thanks to the size of the school and the number of successful alumni.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I've known since I was in middle school that I wanted to be a teacher, something that Penn State is preparing me for that more than I could ever have hoped for. There are truly wonderful teachers who care about the success of their students. Though the classes may be large they always make time to sit aside with students and help them through any part of the course work they find difficult. It is challenging, but the challenge is what pushes you beyond what you think you're capable of and into the realm of impossibilities. I've learned more in this past year than I'd ever thought I would; information I know will be useful when I take the final steps in becoming a teacher.
Am enjoying being here I've never been to a school like Penn State, the connection that exists between the students who rally together to fight for what they believe and what they love, is unreal. A simple football game unites 40,000 (at main campus alone) students who cheer, cringe, cry, and yell with pride in their hearts. And it all happens on one of the most beautiful campuses you can imagine, with snowy winters and blazing summers that make you want to be outside all of the time. I don't think I would have been this happy at any other school in the world.
Bang for the buck Now, no matter how wonderful Penn State is, it cannot be argued that it is a cheap institution to attend, especially if like me, you are an out of state student. I have been warned by countless people that I will be paying off student loans until I am 40 years old, and they are probably right. But I know that that is a process I can handle and that with the strength Penn State has instilled in me I will work relentlessly to pay off those loans until the last penny is paid, and I will do it all with a smile on my face. Because it is worth it.
Tips for prospective students When you first arrive, the sheer immensity of the campus can be alarming. There are cars honking and fighting over parking spaces that are closest to the dorms, it is chaotic and crazy and makes you want to crawl into a ball in the back seat and have mom or dad drive you all the way home. But just breathe. Leave your door open as you unpack and make conversation with your neighbors, who are just as freaked out as you. Friend will make the difference between loving and hating this school. If you are going to go, do it right, because this should experience should never be one that you look back on with regret.
Great for these types of students Students who like to feel as if they are a part of something, who love a sense of community and connection. There is a ton of stuff to do at and around Penn State, which is wonderful for the weekends, but the curriculum is challenging and focus on your studies is important. You should never forget that the fun can pull you in and before you realize you are behind in your classes. If you like the challenge of the curriculum and can find the balance between work and play, you will have the time of your life at this campus.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot All of the professors I've had have been excellent teachers and extremely knowledgeable about their subjects. I've enjoyed taking my general education requirements as I get to take a lot of classes I never thought I would be in. Having so many different majors and departments is great because there are lots of fun and random classes for you to take and learn about different subjects.
Am enjoying being here I love the culture of the town and students and I also love all the clubs. Being able to walk and/or ride a bus everywhere is awesome. There are so many cool places to go downtown and everything you need is very close. The magnitude of clubs is also really great, it's so easy to find your niche after attending meetings and activities for the first few weeks to see what you like. After you find a club you like you can have a core group of friends to hang out with all the time and experience new things with!
Bang for the buck The tuition money is reasonable when you consider how many classes and activities the school offers for you. One thing that is a bit pricey is the meal plans for on-campus students. They make you pay a base cost of over $1000 and then you add the actual dining dollars onto that. This is because everything you buy with meal points is at an extremely reduced price, but I would rather know and pay the real cost than feel like I'm being ripped off by paying thousands of real dollars for only 400 meal points.
Tips for prospective students -Go to lots of club meetings and especially the involvement fair at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel like one club isn't the fit for you at first, keep going because as people feel more comfortable you might find it's actually perfect for you!
-When you move in, take your schedule and walk around to find your buildings. Don't assume they'll be easy to find because nobody wants to be that person that's late on the first day because they got lost.
-Don't buy your books ahead of time! Some professors don't even use the ones listed online and even if they do, chances are you can find them cheaper downtown.Great for these types of students If you're pretty independent and like to be involved in lots of activities, you'll love Penn State. It's a big campus with lots of stuff going on so you won't always be able to do everything with friends. You have to be able to take on some challenges alone but at the same time be very willing to work together. There are so many opportunities here, you should be willing to take as many as possible.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot If you want to get a quality education, Penn State is the the to be. No wonder Penn State is nationally ranked, acclaimed as the Big Ten, and is considered a Public Ivy. As a biology major at Penn State, I had the in-depth experience on getting the most out of my education.
Am enjoying being here Penn Sate is such a huge campus with new people. You will find everyone of every race or ethnicity, that you will feel at home, no matter who you are. Everyone here takes great pride in their in their alma mater, that you don't feel insecure or left out.
Bang for the buck Penn State University Park, is one of the most expensive colleges in America, but it is worth the money. Through alumni-ship, and reputation of a big name, your future is definitely secure for a good job. That is why Wall Street Journal ranks PSU as #1 in corporate recruitment.
Tips for prospective students Truth be told, applying to the Penn State flagship campus is quite a challenging experience. I recommended starting at a satellite campus first and then transferring to UP. At UP freshman will face hardships adjusting to a huge college environment.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot The two students I stayed with said that they learned so much in the short time they were there. They said they like all of their professors and courses.
Will enjoy being here I spent two nights at the school and fell in love immediately. Whether it was the thousands of students pouring out of the Bryce Jordan Center after the Dane Cook Stand Up show, or the constant We are....PENN STATE chants echoing throughout the campus, to the massive structure known as Beaver Stadium, I knew this place was right for me.
Bang for the buck Will likely be worth it, but being one of the most expensive public schools in the country doesn't help. Thus, 4 stars.
Tips for prospective students From what I was told, study from day 1, and don't buy your books immediately. Sometimes, professors don't even use them.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot As an Aerospace Engineering major, I can not even begin to describe how much I have learned since coming here. The professors are world class and give you all the attention you need; they really make every effort to assist you in your studies. When I talk to friends who attend other colleges, they are literally blown away with how much further along I am in my studies.
Am enjoying being here There is not a better college in this country. Every student loves being here and there aren't any cliques like in high school. Every Penn Stater is equal and it really makes for an awesome college experience.
Bang for the buck For my major, it's one of the most cost effective schools. Penn State has an exceptional engineering program; not many schools are better, and a majority of the ones that are, are more expensive. Not only is the tuition reasonable, the cost of living is very reasonable as well.
Tips for prospective students Penn State is a great college but has its fair share of distractions. Don't let the party school mentality get to you. I can't tell you how many freshman I've seen do poorly because they couldn't balance work with play. But if you feel you can handle it, get ready for an awesome college experience.
Great for these types of students I would be hard pressed to find a type of student that this university wouldn't be great for

Will enjoy being here I loved the environment on my tour of the campus last year. Despite the largeness of the school, it was not overwhelming and seemed like a great place to meet new people.
Bang for the buck The school isn't as pricey as some others I've looked at. This is a positive because it competes well academically with other schools.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Attending Penn State is really changing the way that I view the world. Not only do I learn about the relevant subject matter in my respective classes, but I also have the opportunity to speak to those who are extremely knowledgeable in their fields. Some of these professors have become mentors to me and given me helpful pointers on how to successfully develop my own career once I end my time at Penn State.
Am enjoying being here State College is a great place to live, for the school year and any other time. Once the school year ends, I find myself not wanting to leave. I'm only halfway done with my college career and I've already made friends that I know I will keep forever. There is tons to do on and off the Penn State campus as well.
Bang for the buck Penn State is considered a public ivy and the Wall Street Journal rated it the number one school in the nation for job recruiting. At Penn State, you get a world class education for an affordable price. Classes are taught by top ranked professors and according to people I know that have graduated, they felt extremely well prepared by their Penn State education after graduation. Another benefit of attending Penn State is the wide network of Penn State alumni that you can identify with. This is really helpful for finding jobs and internships.
Tips for prospective students While Penn State may seem huge, you'll get used to it after a few weeks so don't be scared! Get involved from the very beginning because everyone is looking for friends at the start of the school year. If you wait a little longer to come out of your shell, it might be harder to make friends because everyone has already established friendships. Go to classes! You're paying for them, might as well get the most out of them. You'll be glad you did.
Great for these types of students Penn State is great for students who have a lot of motivation. The walk to class can sometimes be pretty far and it might be tempting for some students to stay in bed instead of making the effort. It's also great for students who want to make a large amount of friends and have a great sense of school pride.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot ALL of my classes are wonderful! I am a double major in Violin Performance and Psychology. I'm taking 8 classes this semester, but it doesn't feel like work, and my professors really do know their stuff.
Am enjoying being here I've never said this to my family yet, but I feel completely at home here. I have fantastic room/suitemates, and I am meeting so many people who share the same interests as I do. I was worried that I made the wrong choice in going here, but I know, with my whole heart,, that I have indeed made the right choice.
Bang for the buck Entirely...it's expensive, but it is totally worth it.
Tips for prospective students Visit campus! You might think that being in the middle of nowhere a bad thing, but the campus is large enough that you won't believe that you're in the middle of nowhere.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State is one of the top universities in the country in academics. My background from a vocational technical high school prepared me well enough for the challenging nature of the courses here. Professors are willing to help you and are very open with you, but unlike high school, one needs to take the initiative to get the help from professors should one need it. They will not go out of their way to help you if you do not ask them for it. The quality of the material is high, the methods in which it is taught are great, and it is definitely challenging, yet not impossible. Some courses cover material learned in high school, but then go deeper into detail and enable you to gain a greater understanding on a topic or method. Overall, Penn State is a quality university with top-notch academics.
Am enjoying being here I am definitely enjoying being at Penn State, and you get the sense from the students and people around you that most everyone else does as well. During my college visits back in high school, there was no other school that showed as much school spirit and pride than Penn State, and that really contributes to how much I love this school. At no other schools were there people wearing the school's apparel everywhere you looked! There are hundreds of clubs and countless events and things to do around campus too, so if you're bored here, you're definitely doing something wrong. I love PSU!
Bang for the buck I gave a rating of four stars for this category because of Penn State's academic prestige. The reason it is not five stars is because of the tuition rate, especially for an out of state student like myself. Through all my love for and great times I've had at this school, the buck part of this saying is definitely a bit high. For Penn State, the bang is definitely there, the question remains as to whether or not the buck is.
Tips for prospective students Definitely be ready for a big college experience when you attend this campus of the Penn State network. Although there may be a few times where you could feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount of students here, this school is what you make of it. If you focus in on what your tasks are for the day, such as classes, club involvements, etc., this large campus will feel many times smaller to you than what it really is. Purchase season tickets to the football games and go to each one. They are an experience of their own, especially for big, primetime games against rival schools. Try and get involved with THON; there is no other time (except for maybe football games in the student section) where you will feel more proud to be a Penn Stater. Finally, just find your niche and try to have as much fun as possible, the college year goes by quicker than you could ever imagine.
Great for these types of students Those who love school spirit, love to get involved, love college sports (especially football), love a big university atmosphere, and love to work hard.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Penn State is one of the top researching universities in the country. Every year that I have been here, they have been adding new research labs and classrooms. Whether you're studying Engineering or Music Theater, Business or Kinesiology, at Penn State you will get the quality education you need and deserve.
Am enjoying being here Penn State has arguably the best social life of any college campus. There are about 50 fraternities and 25 sororities, along with thousands of student clubs, organizations, and teams to become a part of. And who could forget Penn State football? There is nothing else like it, nor will there ever be. 110,000 people all cheering for those Nittany Lions is an experience I'll never forget. There is no way that you cannot enjoy the college town of University Park.
Bang for the buck Coming from an out-of-state student, Penn State can get pricey (just ask my parents), but that price comes with a high-level education, nice dorms, and actually really good food.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus, ask questions to whomever you can, and really figure out what type of school you would like to go to. I knew I wanted a big university with a lot of options for majors and big sports programs, but that is not for everyone.
Great for these types of students Students that don't necessarily need that one-on-one time with their teachers (although there are plenty of times that you can visit your professor and get them to know you by name). Students that enjoy meeting new people in every class and every social situation (there will be a lot!). Students that really want to find what they are passionate about (I had no idea either, but with 150+ majors that Penn State offers, it is hard not to find one that is right for you).

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Just because it's a fun school does not mean that it will be easy. Penn State is one of the top fifty colleges in the nation and along with that carries some prestige.
Am enjoying being here Big Ten athletics and Happy Valley, who wouldn't enjoy being at Penn State.
Bang for the buck It is at a good price for the prestige of the University. For all of the expenses (tuition, room and board, meal plan, and miscellaneous stuff like eating out and transportation) the total bill comes at about 34,000 to 37,000.
Tips for prospective students I am a senior of the class of 2011. I'm about to go to PSU in the fall and I'm super pumped to go. If you are thinking about going to Penn State I would recommend visiting the college, especially when classes are in session, because it's a good way to get a feel for the campus and what it will be like when u get there. Also, it is SUPER IMPORTANT that you meet an admissions counselor and someone in the department you are looking at. It helps in making good connections and they can also help you out for different scholarships...It helped me get a full ride!!
Great for these types of students PSU has an incredible business school among many other prestigious courses. I think an important thing is to make sure that you can be independent and have the personality to try and stand out because if you simply lay in the background, then you will as a result just become part of the dreaded number.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The learning environment is so amazing at Penn State. There is literally something for everyone. A class for any type of interest. The professors show you things you never even thought about or heard about. The lessons are so in depth and there are many small versions of normally huge classes you can take if you feel you learn better in a smaller teaching environment. It is weird at times because a lot of people study so much. You can't help but want to join in!
Am enjoying being here I love being at Penn State. I actually never want to leave. The people are so nice, you feel like you are in the twilight zone. It's so easy to make friends and keep them the entire time you are there. There are many things to do if you are not lazy haha. The parties are amazing, but its better not to let your life revolve around them.
Bang for the buck We all know that staying at PSU is actually really expensive. Not Harvard expensive, but getting there. Some people may not have the money to pay for it, but there are alot of things you can do to keep the cost down. Live in supplemental housing instead of double rooms, have a smaller meal plan, don't spend so much money on things you do not need. For example, buying clothes while at school. Most of the stores are really expensive and nine times out of ten, you will be able to find the same thing at the mall at home for wayyyyy cheaper. Also get loans, grants, and scholarships. As many as you can to lighten the load, because at the end of the day it is soooo worth it. :)
Tips for prospective students -Make sure you really want to be at PSU, because honestly you either love it or you hate it, and many people love it and won't get in because YOU wanted to get in and then end up hating it. So visit first.
-Have a lot of extracurriculars because PSU has alot of extracurriculars. It will prepare you for the balancing act of school, sleep, social life and extras
-Be eternally thankful for the sleep you have now. Take advantage of it. Because you won't have it for longGreat for these types of students There are some schools who have smart people. There are other schools who have party people. Penn state is not just a party school or a highly intelligent school. Penn state is a school for smart people who like to party. This is why we are not ivy league.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Your Gen Eds are a hit or miss but your teachers will generally know their stuff, some more than others. Overall, my classes taught me what they were supposed to and I genuinely enjoyed learning the courses I had chosen. You're the one responsible, however. If you don't attend your classes, you will suffer the direct and indirect consequences. In addition to the formal education, you have the college experience at the tips of your fingers and each day you venture downtown or anywhere for the matter, you interact with others and learn how to adapt into a young adult.
Am enjoying being here Despite the bipolar weather, I love campus. Living in the North suites (one of the nicer dorms), I am nearby all of my classes and everything really is in within walking distance. Each season carries its own distinct pleasure whether it be enjoying the colors of spring and fall or bundling up and enjoying company during the winter. The CATA buses are very convenient when wanting to travel further than campus and even for on campus; the bus stops are right where you would want them to be. Being a Big Ten school, the football games are a must if you want to feel the best that the school has to offer with all its pride and enthusiasm.
Bang for the buck It is expensive even while paying in-state tuition; however, there are so many resources and free activities available to anyone who seeks them out. It really is all about getting involved and taking advantage of what your money gets you at Penn State. Free movie showings are offered every weekend at the HUB, you can check out very expensive objects such as laptops or cameras for free, weekly concerts are shown for free, and much more. It's all about being out and about and enjoying the university.
Tips for prospective students Apply early for admission and the FAFSA. Be ready to shout out PENN STATE with all your might. East is where most freshmen end up and it's the least desirable dorms even though some love the freshmen experience there. West has the best food. Walking is faster than taking the bus if you aren't lazy. Be prepared to compromise with your roommate(s).
Great for these types of students If you want the total college experience (intense finals, crazy party scene, intense football games, crazy amounts of fun), then Penn State is for you. Even if you aren't somebody who isn't into Greek life or sports, there are so many different clubs, stores, and places that can cater to any interests. It's really what you make it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors here really know their stuff. If you show up to class, there's an excellent chance that you'll learn everything you need to know.
Am enjoying being here The campus and surrounding area is beautiful. There's always something to do on and off campus. There are tons of extracurricular activities to participate in, and there's always someone you can go to if you need help in a course or advice.
Bang for the buck The tuition is a lot of money (Especially for out of state students), but it's well worth it. You get a great education with some of the best people in the business. Definately worth it.
Tips for prospective students Get into good study habits now, otherwise you might get overwhelmed. There are tons of academic opportunities. If your first choice doesn't work out, you can always try something else.
Great for these types of students Any student looking for a college that has a good academic reputation and also has a lot of activities and opportunities outside of the classroom.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are so many ways to succeed at Penn State. The professors are always helpful, so forget about the rumors that say the Professors only care about the money. There are so many ways to reach out for help like the CAA, which is the tutoring center and it is free so why not get all the help you can if you're having problems in a certain subject. You also learn how to make a home away from home. So, its not all about book smarts at Penn State you learn how to live in a diverse area and its a wonderful experience. You learn how to handle situations you didn't know how to handle before like talking to the Professor about an assignment you did not understand too much about. And I;m still learning everyday I'm at school.
Am enjoying being here I love my first semester at Penn State. There is so much to do on and off campus. This year was the first time I went laser tagging and it was with a whole bunch of new friends I met this year in school. I also met my current boyfriend here and in September it will have been a year. You have more freedom and more space. Friends are not hard to find and clubs are not hard to join. I'm in 8 different clubs and also the women's volleyball team captain this year. There are times where you do miss being home but that's what the phone is here for, to call the people you miss and cherish the most. It is a wonderful school and you can even talk to your own personal advisor about how to deal with things on and off campus.
Bang for the buck Penn State is an expensive school, but they help pay for your tuition. And besides the main campus, Penn State has other branch campuses as well that are much cheaper then the main campus. But you do get all you pay for. You get entertainment, trips, activities for certain weathers and everyday things to do around campus. There are study groups and clubs it is worth it. The offer loans and grants as well as scholarships you just have to look for them.
Tips for prospective students Always think twice before doing something. Never fall into peer pressure. Be your self that's the best thing you can do, because you will find friends and maybe even a good boyfriend if you are really true to yourself.
Great for these types of students Penn State is great for all kinds of people.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students be wary, penn state is a very numbers oriented school. i was well above the 75% of sat scores and gpa, as well as attending a private high school, yet i was denied. it is best to apply early (rolling admissions) and not before the november deadline. also, they only take a certain percentage of kids from one certain high school, prefer in staters, and also put legacies well above a more qualified student. i thought this would be an easy school to be admitted to, but it really is technical.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I believe this Campus is a five star even though people may judge the school on what happen the pass year. I'm looking forward to attending this school in the fall this year.
Tips for prospective students I honestly can say this campus have great opportunity for students to grow and learn valuable skills.
Academic Rigor I love the Penn State grading system
Dorm Life I like the dorm for first year but not for higher up students in college.
Food and Dining Great food selections and can have family come and visit you to go out.
What to do for fun Go out with friends to a Basketball game or you guys can have a game night and make a team to play volleyball.
Bang for the buck I think Penn State is worth the money. I believe people who graduate get the best job opportunity.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Blue and White is the big thing for Penn state students and it's a tradition to dress up in Blue & White for Football weekend game in April.
Great for these types of students Great for students who want to major in Medical field and Business major as well.
Clubs and Activities Blue&White and Greek Club also Student government
Greek Life If you decide to attend Penn State try to be apart of the Greek Club.
Campus Safety Great safety with police are available when you need then.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences A great school that despite its size, has a very small school feel to it. Rich in everything from academics to athletics and the arts, there's something for everyone to achieve. Nothing is more rewarding than being able to return the We Are chant with Penn State!
Tips for prospective students Get involved: Nothing enriches your experience outside the classroom by finding an activity that you love and bonding with people who share the same interest. You get great new friends and get to do something that you enjoy. Don't be afraid of the library or office hours: it's never wrong to ask for help, because first and foremost, you're there to learn.
Academic Rigor Everyone at Penn State is smart, so it will in no way be a cake walk, but with dedication and a bit of work, there's nothing stopping you from being academically successful! But in case you do struggle, there's also a wide variety of ways to get help and get back on track.
Dorm Life Dorms are dorms, small and hot and cramped, but they are one of the best experiences that you will encounter in your first year. Never will you have the chance to meet so many different people all going though the same experiences that you are. Dorms are what you make of them, but they can be a whole lot of fun.
Food and Dining There are so many different places to eat no matter what you are craving. Both on campus and the available eateries downtown provide solid food that will satisfy your taste buds regardless of your cravings.
What to do for fun State College is a cute little town with so many things to do. Check out the stores and go shopping, get a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants, see a free play or check out a musical performed by fellow students, there's always something to do, and it's usually pretty cheap.
Bang for the buck Penn State can be a bit pricey, especially for out of state students, but for the experience that you get and everything that you can do beyond the classroom make the expense worth every penny. Coming to Penn State will not be a decision you regret any time soon.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Penn State is full of traditions and cool places to visit. Whether it be visiting the lion shrine for your picture, or seeing the JoePa statue by the stadium, there's a wide variety of traditions for you to partake in during your time. One tradition that many students find entertaining is the annual Mifflin Streak, in which the Sunday before Spring finals, students streak down Mifflin Road to let off steam.
Great for these types of students Penn State is great for students who love to have fun and get the most out of life. There is so much more beyond the classes and books for PSU students to take a part of. It is also great for students who take their education seriously and want to maximize their learning experience through study abroad and other similar programs.
Clubs and Activities With nearly 40,000 students, there is a club or activity for nearly anything that you can think of at Penn State. Sports, theatre, arts, language clubs, philanthropies, anything and everything that a student could be interested in is represented at Penn State.
Greek Life Penn State has a very rich Greek community, which is composed of over 50 fraternities and 20 sororities. Though not for everyone, Greek Life represents a group of students who want to go beyond the typical call of duty for students and give back in the true spirit of what it means to be a Gentleman and Woman.
Campus Safety Penn State has safety call buttons on nearly every corner of campus, and pathways are all very well lit for night time travels. There are few crimes committed on campus thanks to the dedicated University Park police system that works to protect every student.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I would rate Penn State University from 1 out of 10, 1 being the worst and 10 being the best and 8. The professors are out there to help you get to your ultimate career goal no matter what the obstacles are. In addition, the learning environment is extremely encourage because they make sure that you know your stuff before you leave out to the real world.
Tips for prospective students For future students, I would say to get involved in someway at Penn State because academics isn't everything. There are hundreds of ways to get involved such as being in a fraternity/sorority, clubs/ organizations etc. There is something for everyone out here at Penn State University Park. You just need to find it because its out there, but don't get discourage if you find it difficult finding what you want. Faculty and staff members will be more than happy to help you out.
Academic Rigor When you come here to Penn State University Park you will learn something in some way, shape or form. There is a high academic standard at Penn State. You will learn a lot out here if you pay attention and remember to go to class because you can not learn anything if you are not in class.
Dorm Life I don't have much knowledge in this field because I always lived off campus since I arrived at Penn State. However, I knew a few friends who lived on campus in dorms. There are some dorms that you will be rooming with one or multiple students in the same room or you may have your own room but share a dining area, bathroom, kitchen, etc. It all depends on how you like your living arrangements.
Food and Dining There is an abundant amount of restaurants, dining establishments and other food courts off and on campus. You can choose from a variety of foods from all different types of cultures lusines but its in my opinion there is more European dishes out here but you should find foods close to resemble your culture if you miss it.
What to do for fun There are several things that students can do out here at Penn State for fun. For starters, there are plenty of bars and clubs here at Penn State that will fit your needs if you are looking to get away from academic work. If you are under 21 years of age or don't like the bar/club scenes there are still plenty of activities you can do such as Late night offered by Penn State. Basically, in a nutshell, late night are activities that a person or groups of people can do that doesn't involve alcohol such as playing indoor sports, movies, games, and other fun activities.
Bang for the buck You can do a lot out here at Penn State for the amount of money you have to spend. Especially when all students have to pay a student fee which is part of the tuition. You can purchase a lot of stuff for cheap if you do some extra research on whatever you are trying to find.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At Penn State, there it is a tradition to chant out We Are Penn State at football games and activities that happen at the Bryce Jordan Center which is a multi-purpose arena for concerts, basketball games, and other events especially Thon which will be later explained in the next few sections.
Great for these types of students Depending on the type of person you are there is something out here for everyone whether you are an out going person or not. Faculty and staff always encourage students to find something other than academic to stay physically and socially active. If you like the out doors you will always find something to do such as hike at Mount Nittany, sports, out door games etc.
Clubs and Activities For clubs and activities there are a lot of them. There are a lot of clubs and activities such as Fraternities and Sororities, Honor Society, International/Multicultural, Media/Publication, Music/Performing Arts, Philanthropic, Political, Religious/Spiritual and much more. One very known activity is Thon. Thon is the largest-student-run philanthropy in the world. Thon is design to raise money to cure cancer for children. It is a very great cause and good activity to get into.
Greek Life I have a little bit of knowledge on this subject but I am assuming its about fraternities and sororities. As I mention before, there are all types of fraternities and sororities for all types of people and background. You will be able to find it out here.
Campus Safety Overall on and off campus is pretty safe. There isn't a lot of issue here at Penn State however, issues do arise especially at any large college or university. Crime and incidents do occur but everyone needs to be alert and have their eyes open especially at night and on large football games because of outsiders. Police officers and other officials encourage students and people who are going out at night to always have a friend with them so that incidents are less likely to happen because most of incidents occur to people who are alone. So be aware of your surroundings and always have a friend or someone you can trust with you if you are going out at night. You are now growing up and fading away from your parents or guardian so students have to learn sometime. This is a way of growing up and opening your eyes and mind.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State has prestigious programs that are extremely beneficial in preparing students for the the real world. It is an enormous family that not only works on enhancing students academic ability but improving communities, racism, and other helpful projects. I am extremely happy with my decision in attending Penn State.
Tips for prospective students With the greatness of Penn State, you may find yourself intrigued by the social perspective at Penn State. Although, it is important to live the college experience, just remember what you are there for. Make sure you prioritize and make choices for today with tomorrow in mind.
Dorm Life It might not be luxurious, but you will not regret the many memories you will make living in the dorms. It's like a big sleep over.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences It will be your home away from home. There's a great sense of community among the students. WE ARE PENN STATE!
Academic Rigor There will be a few classes that you'll have to take that'll be challenging. But professors are always there to help if you ask them, and there's also the Penn State Learning Center.
Dorm Life There are five residence halls: North, South, East, West and Pollock. If you're a freshman, chances are you'll be living in East. I loved living in East because I made friends easily because we were all freshman and had more in common. The rooms are comfortable and you don't need to bring a fridge or microwave since they have them in the rooms already.
Food and Dining There's so many places to eat in the residence halls. What ever you like you can find it. My two favorites are Pollock and West. The HUB also had restaurants like Burger King and Chick fil a.
What to do for fun It's college so of course there's frat parties that go on and apartment parties. Late night at the HUB is always an alternative for partying. There's movies that are shown and activities to do, and usually a free concert. Concerts that you have to pay for are shown at the Bryce Jordan Center. This past year we had Drake, Mac Miller, and Day Glow to name a few headliners.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Thon isn't really unusual. What is thon? you might ask. It's the largest run student philanthropy that raises money for the four diamond foundation and finding a cure for pediatric cancer. Fund raising takes place all year around and ends with a 46 hour dance marathon and the final total is revealed at the end.
Great for these types of students There's a place for everyone at Penn State and finding a niche isn't hard.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The best choice I ever made was to attend Penn State University. I love everything about the school; the pride, the education, the people and then entire school itself. We are... Penn State!
Tips for prospective students Be ready to take plenty of notes. Although you may not want to study, in the end it will definitely pay off. It sure has for me.
Academic Rigor I'm a Bioengineering major so for me it is definitely a lot of work. It all depends on your major, but I would say it is by no means easy for me. I still love it though.
Dorm Life Dorm life is definitely part of the college experience. I love meeting people and living in the dorms makes it extremely easy to meet new people all the time.
Food and Dining Here there are four dining halls and the food is fairly decent. Sometimes there are better things on the menu than other times but for the most part it is not too bad.
What to do for fun Penn State has over 500 clubs and organizations. The main thing that students are a part of is THON. THON is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. This year we raised 10.6 million dollars to help fight pediatric cancer. I definitely recommend becoming involved with THON, it is an extremely rewarding experience.

Tips for prospective students Visit Penn State! The atmosphere is like no other school. Also, go to a football game. I guarantee you will want to come here!
Academic Rigor Keep up with your classes and spend the needed time to study and comprehend the material. Try to be organized and write down when all your homework is due and your exam times. It helps!
Dorm Life WONDERFUL<3. This is what I'll miss the most out of my entire freshmen year. My whole co-ed floor became my family!
Food and Dining East Common=not so good compared to the other commons.
West=the best! What to do for fun There is always something to do. PSU has many activities planned all during the week. There are new movies playing all weekend long in the HUB. There are concerts and comedians. There are sports and games you can watch and cheer on. You can explore and shop downtown.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The atmosphere on campus is amazing, everyone has so much school spirit, and there is just this unity about being a Penn Stater. It is known for being a party school, and students do have fun, but it isn't the whole picture of Penn State. Students are serious about there classes too.
Tips for prospective students Stepping onto campus for the first time can be intimidating as it is a big campus. I would recommend doing one of the summer programs that they have for freshmen. I did Urban Service Experience (USE), and it was one of the best decisions that I made. It made being a freshman on such a big campus less scary, and the friends that I met there are people that I am still friends with today. Join lots of clubs, sports and whatever catches your interest and you'll make lots of friends along the way.
Academic Rigor The classes are really challenging, especially the general education classes. They always say that it's a way of separating students who are actually serious about being in a particular major. I had to change study habits several times until I found one that worked for me, but as long as you study hard and take your classes seriously you'll do just fine.
Dorm Life Dorm life is okay. It's not great, but it's also not horrible. I lived in Pinchot, which is in East Halls, my freshman year. East Halls is where the majority of freshmen live. The elevators are the most interesting place to meet people. I had a random roommate, but she turned out to be a really great person, and the people on my floor were really awesome too. The dorms are small but that's expected. It has a bed, desk with a chair and a microfridge ( microwave and fridge). Pinchot is coed by floor, and there is one bathroom for girls and one bathroom for boys on each floor. Each floor has a little recycling set up, so that's good too, and laundry is usually on every other floor. Housing keeps the floors and bathrooms on each floor pretty clean.
Food and Dining East dining hall has the worst food. The best place to eat in East is at Roxy's. The burgers are pretty good, and it's a good place to get breakfast. I think West dining has the best food, and the best cookies, but South dining is also good place to eat too. Insomnia Cookies has amazing cookies that you can order too. I've never eaten at North dining so I don't know about that one. You do get tired of eating campus food pretty quickly, as it is the same food over and over. If that happens then there are also some good places you can order food from, such as Wings Over. It has the best wings and cajun fries for less than $20. Lionsmenu.com has a whole list of places. There are also convenient stores on campus that you can get snacks and microwaveable food from. The HUB is a convenient place to eat and has different places, such as Burger King and Starbucks. The best ice cream that you will ever taste in your life is at the Berkey Creamery on campus.
What to do for fun Nightlife is a huge part of campus. There are bars downtown, and there are 18 and over bars too. There are usually frat parties most weekends. If you're not into the party scene, the hub normally has late night movies and other activities. There are also movie theaters, ice rink, and skiing is not that far away. There are organizations and clubs for almost anything that you can think of. There are just so many things that you can get involved in.
Bang for the buck It is really expensive, especially being an out of stater, but you do get what you pay for. It is an amazing school with a top notch education, and top rated professors who are almost always willing to help. There are so many different opportunities that will help you further your career. The tuition that rises every year is a downside, but your education is worth it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Lion Shrine is probably one of the most popular places on campus. There is a tradition of taking a picture with the lion your freshman year and your senior year.
Great for these types of students This school is really great for all kinds of people, especially students who like big campuses, small towns, school spirit and large classes.
Clubs and Activities I believe there are over 800 different clubs and organizations. There are so many different things you can get involved in. One of my favorite activity was THON. It's a huge dance marathon with thousands of students, and THON kids, children who are fighting cancer and their families. It's truly one of the most incredible thing I have ever experienced before in my life.
Greek Life I am a part of Greek life and I absolutely love it. Greek life is a big part of campus, but if you're not into that, then there are still a lot of students who are not apart of it.
Campus Safety I think campus is a very safe place to be. I've walked back and forth to the library and my dorm at 12am, 1am, 2am, and I haven't felt scared or like my life is in danger or anything like that. It's a big campus there are always students walking about. If for any reason you feel scared or threatened then there is an escort service that you can call, and they'll give you a ride back to where you want to go. Overall, I think campus security and state college police does a pretty good job of keeping the place safe.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State is a great school. The campus is beautiful and the atmosphere is inviting. I am very happy with my choice to attend this school.
Tips for prospective students Despite anything people might say, Penn State really is a phenomenal university. The students all love the university, and any prospective students probably will as well.
Academic Rigor The work is tough. But as long as you stay on top of it and stay focused, it isn't too bad.
Dorm Life There are tons of dorms on campus. Although they aren't perfect, they aren't horrible either. The only problem is that they can get extremely hot very quickly.
Food and Dining The food on campus is great. There are five dining commons on campus, and there is dining in the HUB, which is the student center on campus. In the hub we have Starbucks, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, Sbarro, Panda Express, and a hoagie shop. All of the food on campus can be bought with Meal Points, which are paid for at the beginning of each semester.
What to do for fun The energy at the football games is incredibly intense. Other than that, they show free movies every weekend in the HUB that were recently in theaters. Also, we get a lot of performances by celebrities. Right off of campus is downtown State College, which has tons of shops and whatnot for students looking to get off campus for a little while.
Bang for the buck I won't lie, Penn State is painfully expensive. But It's so easy to make the most of your time there that you don't even think about the high costs very often.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Outside of the Willard building towards the west end of campus, there will usually be a man outside known as the Willard Preacher. He just stands out there all day and preaches to students on their way to and from class. Sometimes he'll get into a few arguments, in which case a crowd will form to watch.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Penn State is awesome! There is so much opportunity for every student that is enrolled. All the professors are great and will always be there to lend a hand, even the ones who run huge lectures.
Tips for prospective students One thing I'd advise is to plan out your work schedule and don't procrastinate. Work can pile up fast. Don't be afraid to apply yourself and get involved, if you work hard and get involved things will seem a lot easier and you'll make some great relationships.
Academic Rigor Penn State is an academically challenging school. However, it is not as bad as one may think, you just need to seek help when needed.
Dorm Life Dorm Life is great. You'll surely meet a lot of people just like you on either your floor or building. Don't be afraid to say hello.
Food and Dining Go to Pollock dining commons they have the best food of all of them. Other places like the Mix and West wing are great too when you just want to grab a little something.
What to do for fun There are so many places you can go. Try the IM or white building and see all the intramural sports you can participate in, most are free. If sports aren't your thing, go downtown and shop or grab a bite to eat at one of the many places on college avenue.
Bang for the buck With a Penn State degree you'll be set up for success. Many companies and large corporations are always swinging by to try and find students. If you can convince them you're the best, it will surely set your life up. I think this is what separates Penn State from a lot of other schools.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences If you have overwhelming amounts of school pride, then Penn State is the place for you. No matter what you're interested in, be it sports, music, or hobby related clubs, there's a place for everyone here. It will definitely feel like a home away from home.
Tips for prospective students While Penn State does offer lots of services for students, be sure that you've got your stuff together. If you're struggling in a class, you have to take the initiative. In a five hundred person lecture class, the professor is not going to notice whether or not you're absorbing the material. However, no matter how many students a professor has to deal with, they are always willing to make time for you, but you have to initiate. There's always someone willing to help you, but you have to be able to identify any problems and know where to turn on your own.
Don't be fooled by the partying stereotype. Not everyone parties or drinks at Penn State, myself being one of them. If you want to keep your grades up and give your parents a reason for paying for such a fabulous school, don't waste your time by drinking as soon as you get there and every day thereafter.Academic Rigor Penn State's academics are serious. The majority of students tend to be enrolled as engineers of a type of science major. Even as an art student taking gen ed credits, nothing comes easily. You have to step up your game and do the work and actually study (imagine that) if you aren't used to that. If you already have decent study habits and work ethic then you should be fine. Each course, even the low level ones, demands a lot of work be done, regardless of what other classes you're taking, so be prepared to spend a lot of time at the library of in a study lounge.
Dorm Life Dorm life varies depending on which quad you live in. All freshman are required to live on campus and if you don't apply for special housing, then you are placed in East Halls. Yes, you have to share a tiny room with another person, but that's the way it is almost everywhere. The bathrooms are cleaned on a daily basis. There are laundry rooms on every other floor but you have to have good timing if you want to get a machine. As far as storage space goes, each hall is different, but long term storage is available in the basement of each building. It's up to you to figure out what to do with your stuff and how to get comfortable. The covered walkways in East are nice on rainy or snowy days.
Food and Dining There are loads of dining options on campus. Each residence quad has its own dining hall as well as a convenience store and perhaps a few other places to eat like a deli or cafe. You don't always get mom's home cooking, but there's no shortage of places to eat or a variety of foods to choose from. The Berkey Creamery is the place to go for ice cream and breakfast on the go. However, if you're using Meal Points, you can get all you can eat plus ice cream in any dining commons for the same price of a cone or cup at the creamery, so watch how you spend your money! The Meal Points system is very easy and convenient and you can always add or take away points as needed.
What to do for fun What don't you do for fun? There's football season to start the year off, and even if you aren't a sports fan, the football games are a load of fun. There are concerts and other events at the Bryce Jordan Center regularly. Downtown is a short walk away from campus. Each residence hall and even the whole quad will often host their own events. There are buses that run to the mall every fifteen minutes. Different clubs host their own events and fundraisers. There's always something going on!
Penn State is often the first thing that comes to mind when people think party school. While it is present, it's not the only thing that people do. I personally am not a partier and I could not have had more fun during my first year.Bang for the buck Let's be honest, college is expensive. Being an out of stater, I have to shell out some extra money. While Penn State is on the pricey side, it can be well worth is depending on how you spend your time. With Penn State, people tend to take one tour around campus and fall in love. But it's not for everyone. While I did pass up for scholarships from other schools to go to the school I love, I'm enjoying every minute of it. Plus Penn State has a great reputation in industries in many different fields.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Penn State is full of cool little nooks and crannies that are great for studying in, or just hanging out. Some spots people only know about because they have a class in a building near by. If you make friends with a broad range of people then you'll be sure to notice a lot of neat places.
Great for these types of students If you were very involved in high school then you'll love it here. There are causes to fight for and organizations to lead or be a part of. Like I said, there's always something going on and if you're the type of person that likes to get things started then you have many opportunities here.
Clubs and Activities There are hundreds of clubs at Penn State. There are intramural sports, a theme park engineers club, an anime club, a club for republicans, a club for democrats, a model trains club, and even a club for people that take bike rides every Thursday. All you have to do is look for it and chances are that it's already there, waiting for you to join. And even if it isn't, it's very easy to make one.
Greek Life I am not personally affiliated with any Greek organization but I know plenty of people who are. Just like everything else at Penn State, there are tons of groups to join, whether they're social or geared for a specific group of people. The pledging process is not an easy one, but it's a great opportunity to be a part of a group and make friends.
Campus Safety In addition to the local police, the campus has its own police force. There are emergency phones stationed all across the campus. There's even a student auxiliary force of student officers who roam different parts of the campus to make sure that everything is in working order.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The best thing about Penn State is how diverse the student population is. It's easy to meet new people and to be exposed to a wide range of cultures and traditions. There are plenty of opportunities to talk to people from all over the country and all over the world.
Tips for prospective students Don't fall for the party atmosphere in the beginning. Stick your nose to the grindstone and get the work done as soon as you start your classes. This will make it so much easier four years down the road when you only have two more classes to graduate and your party animal classmates are going to be here an extra semester or two. Also take advantage of the many resources that the school has to offer. Professors don't just teach. They also make great contacts and references for those internships you'll be looking at down the road.
Academic Rigor Some classes are easy, and some are hard. I feel like it's pretty straight forward. It just depends what you're good at and what you enjoy. Chances are your major classes will be the most time consuming, but also the most fulfilling.
Dorm Life I've had some very quiet uneventful dorm experiences, as well as semesters where I've lived on a loud crazy party floor. You shouldn't have too many problems as long as you're courteous to your floor mates and don't make too much noise. I've always had positive experiences with my RA's. Penn State does a good job at preparing RA's for the job. They're always willing to help and quick to solve problems between roommates.
Food and Dining Some people complain, but honestly I absolutely love Penn State's dining halls. I really think people are only turned off by the fact that it's coming from a cafeteria. But all in all, delicious food.
Bang for the buck Penn State really isn't too terribly expensive for a public school. I also love what you get for the minimal activities fee that you pay. There are plenty of gyms and athletic facilities, great counseling and medical services, and a wide variety of trips available for free or at a small cost. This is especially true if you attend a satellite campus for your first couple years.
Great for these types of students Penn State is such a diverse school. No matter who you are, you will definitely find people with similar backgrounds and interests as you. It's really a great school for anyone.
Clubs and Activities Because Penn State is such a big school, they have a lot to offer outside of classes. There are lots of clubs and organizations to join, and even the most bizarre or obscure activities are sure to have some followers.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences There's something for everyone! No matter your personality or interests, Penn State professors, current students, sports teams, and clubs and organizations welcome you with open arms. The resources and academic opportunities are endless.
Tips for prospective students If you're completely undecided about a major, I highly recommend Penn State. You are placed in the Division of Undergraduate studies which places you in classes that interest you while still completing all the requirements for any major you could wish to go into. They also have a class for everything so you may discover an interest you weren't even aware of!
Academic Rigor Academic rigor depends a lot on your classes and class load you choice to take on. It can be as hard as you want to make it. Be prepared for large classes seating over 300 people and to take initiative to contact a professor if you're struggling.
Dorm Life Dorms are small anywhere you go, but Penn State has created a great family atmosphere among its freshman dorms. After freshman year it's very common to move into an apartment in town, which also has its advantages.
Food and Dining There are multiple dining facilities on campus, as well as many convenience stores filled with snacks and burger joints. The main student center also has the mainstream fast-food places like Chik-fil-a, Panda Express, Starbucks, Sbarros, etc. Basically you can find whatever you're in the mood for!
What to do for fun The options available when it comes to extracurricular activities and clubs are endless. They foster a very friendly environment and make an effort to plan socials in order to get to know new members every year. So your interests often lead you to make great friendships.
