    When it comes to how much you learn I believe that it is up to you to take classes that are interesting and a little bit challenging, because the classes that are easy tend to get boring and not teach you as much.

    I love the atmosphere. Downtown Portland is such an excepting place, people of all ages and walks of life live here and fit in. My classes have multiple age groups and that creates a very unique learning experience.

    College can be very expensive, but I think that with all the options Portland State has to offer that everyone can find their passion.
    Tips for prospective students

    Keep in mind that you actually need to take at least 15 credits to stay on track for graduation, but do not overload yourself either. Try to take one fun class every term. That way you can relax at least one class period a week, because sometimes there isn't time outside of your classes to relax.

    Portland State is great for students who want to be in the middle of it all, and who want to meet many different types of people. Also for people that want to experience the campus feel but be right inside the urban society at the same time.

    Campus is diverse and has something for everyone. Tons of clubs and groups to join, music in the park and is in the heart of downtown so everything is within walking distance.

    While they aren't 100% streamlined in all processes, this school really tries to give you what you need, and tailor your education to your specific goals.
    Tips for prospective students

    If you choose this school, don't overload yourself with courses in your first term. You will want to only take about 12 credits (that is full time) to give yourself time to get used to studying AND to be free to explore the city and campus.

    adventurous, dedicated, passionate, those who believe in a cause, those who want to a school that focuses on education and does not revolve around its sports teams, those who like the city and those looking for new experiences.

    Classes are varied, each student is required to enroll in what is called a Freshman Inquiry. Its kind of a homeroom class, of only about 20-30 students. These take care of a large number of general education credit requirements and are a great break from large lecture classes where you feel uncomfortable asking questions. There are 5 or so subjects to choose from, and all of them fulfill a large number of general education credit requirements.. (I'm in Sustainability!) Each FRINQ has a breakout Mentor Session, where the class is broken up even further to groups of 10 or twelve students with a mentor who gives us valuable info and helps us with any questions we have about the course.
    Starting off, as far as the rest of the courses go, the professors are dedicated to enriching us with information at comfortable speeds. As the classes get higher in number (205, 301, etc.) the pace speeds up considerably, but these classes were made with humans in mind, so it all is entirely manageable.

    I really like the college itself. The campus is beautiful. We're surrounded by trees and interesting buildings. The park blocks in the middle of campus is a great break from the streets, and excellent place to hang out.

    The location is really the main selling point for me. We are literally downtown. The campus is located in what's called the Fareless Square, which means we can hop on the MAX and get taken to almost any location downtown, the mall, and a short distance over the river for free. (After that, you can just buy a cheap ticket to get where you need to go, like the airport.) A large concert venue is a few minutes away, and you can hop on a bus to get to anywhere else in Portland. We also just got a brand new recreation and exercise facility which is stunningly modern and free for students!

    For out-of-state students like me, the price for tuition is steep. However, financial aid programs like the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange Program) make it possible for families with low-incomes. I highly recommend finding out what sort of financial aid you can get before getting your heart set on attending here if money may be a problem.

    Find out what sort of financial aid you can get in coming here.
    Be sure you have an idea on what sort of major you're interested in, because the prerequisite classes are extremely specific and need to get done with as soon as you can, so that all the other necessary classes are available to you.
    Register for the earliest possible orientation/registration day. As a freshman, its hard to get into many of the classes you'll need for your major requirements if you come late in the season.
    Great for these types of students

    I chose Portland mainly because of its music and art scene. Almost every band I like visits here at one time or another, and the city bleeds creativity. There are opportunities everywhere. However, the college is in no way steered toward a specific group of people. You can meet people of all sorts who attend here with one thing in common: they love Portland.

    I love Portland there is always something going on and there is something for everyone. PSU is a great school with excellent professors and provides a good education.

    I think the college is worth the money all though PSU doesn't offer as much financial aid as the bigger universities. Textbooks are really expensive too. Living in Portland also adds to the bill.

    Apartments in the city are expensive to plan ahead. The grocery stores are also expensive. Textbooks are expensive try to avoid the PSU Bookstore. Don't expect much school spirit at this school. Join a club or organization so that you don't fell disconnected.

    When you begin registering for classes the first thing you will notice is the unbelievably huge list of classes to choose from. There is literally something for everyone at this school. Not only that, there are multiple professors teaching the given class. That way, if you hear from your friend that Professor Man is a horribly boring lecturer but you had your heart set on taking Business Communications, have no fear, there are probably at least three other professors teaching that same class!

    All in all, I have learned a lot in my first year at PSU. The professors are truly devoted to their students succeeding and it shows in their passion for their job.

    I attended a private school from kindergarden all the way through my senior year. My graduating class was 80 kids, out of our approximately 300 student high school. Basically my entire high school was the size of most graduating classes. When I started at Portland State with its 28,000 plus student body, I wasn't sure how I was going to adapt. That being said, I have fallen in love with this school. I have made so many friends and it is so easy to get involved in pretty much anything you are interested in. I transitioned smoothly from my tiny high school to Oregon's largest University and I wouldn't change a thing.

    In comparison to many colleges, PSU is not terribly expensive. However, as a young college student I still feel the sting when tuition is due. That being said, the millions of opportunities offered at PSU, in my opinion, makes every cent worth it. Not only are the classes great, the events a blast, and the location unbeatable, Portland State has an unfounded number of connections to the surrounding businesses in the downtown area. This gives graduate as well as undergrads the priceless ability to move from school to career in a heartbeat.

    Truly take advantage of all that Portland State has to offer. Whether it's their multitude of advisors, classes, or activities. There are so many wonderful things this school has to give its students, I urge everyone to take full advantage of every bit of it.

    Active, studious, business oriented, social, ect...like I said before, this school has something for everyone. The only people who may not like it as well are those looking for a smaller school or one located in a college-town rather than the heart of downtown Portland. Otherwise, there is undoubtedly an aspect of this school for every type of student.

    In your first year I suggest take advantage of all the things orientation provides and definitely check out Party in the Park. There you can get acquainted with the many clubs PSU has, and I'm sure you will find something that interests you.

    Students, who really want to learn and be successful in life, need to work hard with a desire to improve in academic level and life principles.     Portland State University is a rather large university - with the population being that of the largest university in the state of Oregon - it has to offer a lot. One might think that since the university offers many courses intended for a large variety of majors, that the rate of education and how the classes are ran may be compromised for the size. This couldn't be further from the truth at Portland State University. The professors are extremely well educated on their subject and, to my pleasant surprise, graduate students that teach lower level classes are well prepared and trained to manage their classes as well. If you go to classes and pay attention, you will learn more than you expected.

    Portland State University prides itself for being an urban university that is in the heart of the largest city in Portland. There is always something to do on campus - whether it be a student organization activity or volunteer work. If campus life isn't suiting for you, though, the city of Portland surrounds you. The MAX, a light rail train that connects downtown Portland to the outskirts of the city, is free in the downtown area so there is no limit to what you can explore as soon as classes and campus activities end.

    With a massive library, multiple computer labs (one that is nearly open 24/7), a free tutoring center and the UNST mentor program, Portland State University doesn't hesitate to make the higher education experience an easier process than it has to be. Help can found through multiple resources; academic, personal or otherwise. Not only this, Portland State University has such a massive selection of majors to choose from that it's not impossible to fulfill multiple interests while studying here.
    Tips for prospective students

    Take as many college transferring and AP classes as possible. To move up every year, one must take 15 classes a term. Full time student status at Portland State University is considered 12 credits. At the beginning of Freshman year, 12 credits are recommended. Transferring credits will ease the transition into the higher education process and save a lot of stress come registration time Sophomore year.
    Great for these types of students

    To those who can't stand the idea of taking a couple years of Prerequisite classes such as English, science and math, PSU is a wonderful option. The University Studies program does, however, stay with you through all four years of the experience from Freshman Inquiry through Senior Capstones. This program does create a sense of community and allows you to explore possible interests for those who are not sure what they want to major in.
    Also, for the city dwellers and those who live in a small town and want an opposite pace of life, Portland State University is possibly the only urban campus that I know of the weaves itself into the city.

    Portland State University has provided me with a lot of education this past fall term. I am a Biology Major and I'm currently enrolled in the Principles of Biology sequence. The lectures are adequate, my professor was really great, and the labs were really laid back and fun. It has been a great experience so far being in this sequence, and I'm looking forward to winter term. Portland State University also has a library that is usually open until 11 PM, and it would be wise to take advantage of that. Also, the computer labs can be really helpful. From what I have seen during my time at Portland State University, the college provides a great environment for learning. The campus might be a bit overwhelming at first, but it is very easy to get used to. And once you know where everything is, you have a great deal of resources at your fingertips. Portland State University provides a lot of opportunities to take learning to the next level, it's up to the student to take those opportunities.

    I really like the Portland State University campus. It is very diverse and very open. Plus it's downtown, you have a lot of options when it comes to your breaks from class. You can find tons of places to hang out or get lunch. It's a great location for the school. It's also a great place to meet people. The school provides a lot of availability, mobility, and, in a sense, a lot of freedom. There is really only one big con for Portland State University. The campus is not smoke-free, and being in downtown, Portland, there are a lot of smokers on campus. It's quite a problem for me, but there isn't much I can do. Other than that, like I said before, the campus being downtown is really great. It provides a great atmosphere and people can just take the chance to explore the city and learn and experience new things. It's a great place to be.

    Let's face it. College is going to be expensive no matter where you go. But for Oregon residents, Portland State University has a pretty decent tuition for a four-year university. Plus, there are a lot of options to lower tuition. For example, I chose not to live on campus, and that brings the price down a great deal. Being the great establishment it is, I believe that Portland State University is a really good deal for the price.

    For potential incoming students, I would just say make sure the school is right for you. Make sure you are all right with the location, the environment you will be in, the types of programs the school has to offer, etc. It's the same with choosing any college, really. Just make sure you like the school, and make sure it has what you're looking for. It is a great college, and it can benefit you a lot. Also, make sure you have a good work ethic. Make sure you do all your work and get your GPA up early. It's very difficult to boost your GPA in later years, so make sure you do well from the start. That's not to say don't have fun. You should always have room for fun. It's a great place for new positive experiences, make sure to take the right opportunities.

    The school has a really great Science program. I am a General Biology major, and the university has a Master's Degree program. I am hoping to get my MS degree, and I might get it from Portland State University. I have also heard that it is a great college for people that are into the arts. A lot of music majors head to Portland State University. It's also good for people going into politics. Honestly, it is a bit of an all-around school. But like I said before, look into it before you commit.

    Portland State University is great if you're a commuter, seeking to get in school and get out with a degree. However, within my one year experience of the school, I found that it was vastly overpriced for the quality of educators. Although, it is possible to get more out of the school by doing the following: select classes that are smaller, higher level, and check out your professors on ratemyprofessor.com. It tends to be very accurate and has been spot on about the professors I had. It's not the school to go to for the traditional college experience, but I wouldn't rule it out as a valid and useful institution.

    I didn't enjoy the student climate, simply because I was a commuter and it was really hard to stay involved in campus activities. This is the case for many students at PSU and there effort to involve students in activities reflects this.

    This school has had a double in tuition costs in the past ten years. The school has spent a lot in recent years in developing student exercising facilities and freshman dormitories to attract students to the campus. It's not a good price. I recommend getting as many credits from community colleges and AP courses as you can, then transferring. But remember, of your 180 credits, you must have about 145 from PSU and you have to take like 45 of your last credits at PSU.

    Don't come here if you're a commuter who needs a sense of support from the school. It's really hard to be an active student at this school when you are far away.

    I feel that in some of the classes I'm learning a lot and in others they are just a waste of time. A lot is to be said for the teacher, I've had a few teachers that are really inspiring and a few that put me to sleep. At Portland State students are required to take a freshman inquiry class, which is basically like your English-writing class. Everyone that I know thinks it's a complete waste of time and I agree. Also along with this class you are required to take a mentor class which is another waste of time all together. I know english and writing are very critically important, but honestly we don't learn or do a lot of it in these classes.

    I like being in downtown Portland, the campus is located right downtown so you're close to everything. I'm a sunshine girl, so the all the rain gets to me a bit, but for the most part it's bearable. I like the campus because it's downtown. I love Portland because it's so diverse, growing up I always felt out of place and different. In high school I was the nerdy art kid, but now I feel normal and appreciated for being into art and indie music. I feel like Portland is the place where all the artists, musicians, actors, and whatever else go.

    I think that all college is too expensive, Portland State is one of the cheapest colleges in Oregon, that is if you are in state, if you are out of state then your tuition will be much higher. I think that for the amount we pay to go here we don't get enough. For one professors never respond to your emails. Spring term is coming up and I was curious about some art classes so I sent some teachers emails, that was around three weeks ago and none of them ever got back to me. The email addresses that I sent them to, was provided by the Portland State website. Another thing is that they tell you to explore different career options, which means to try out different types of classes. Say you want to try a digital page design class and you are an anthropology major, you can't take that class unless you get instructor approval, which as I said before is very hard to get since the professors never respond. So yes, I think we pay way to much.

    Taking classes at PSU has helped me learn a lot, not only in my career field but also in other areas that I may have normally overlooked. There are courses that are required for your graduation that must be unrelated to your major. It really helps open the door to learn a great deal more and you are even able to apply something you wouldn't normally think about to your career. The teachers are well informed and able to answer questions either in class or outside of class.

    My experience here has been very positive so far. The administration side of things is usually very clear and easy to work through. The school side of things, you may want to check a website or with a friend to make sure you get the best instructor for your learning style. There is a diverse range of instructors for classes and it is important to find an instructor who will best fit you.

    There are lots of extracurricular activities and clubs you can get into as well as the education being worth it. Even though some of the options they force students into paying, the best way to get the most out of your money is to use the resources available to you.

    The bookstore is not part of the college. If at all possible buy your books elsewhere. Also, check with the teacher if you can use earlier editions, they are usually much cheaper but work just as well.
    Definitely check with a friend, other students, or websites on different teachers. Some teachers may work out great for you, others will not, to make sure you get the most out of your learning experience this will be important.
    Form a study group, or join one, they really will benefit you. If you know the subject material and don't think you need a study group you are still missing out. You benefit from being able to explain things to others so that you better understand it yourself.

    A diverse range of students. PSU has a very broad group of students that attend. There really isn't an ideal student for this college, everyone can fit in.

    It's a great atmosphere; certainly a change from my small town and (in comparison to PSU) small community college. It was overwhelming the first week, but easy to get into the groove of things.

    Out of state tuition is killer, especially if you miss the scholarship deadline. The oregon residents and WUE scholarship students all say it's much cheaper than the other oregon schools, so for them, I'm sure it's worth it.
    Tips for prospective students

    Apply very early! The application process takes a few weeks and the deadline for all scholarships is February 1st. Take the time to apply over winter break (or even November/December); even if you don't decide to go, it will save you a potential headache.

    if you live off campus and are not from the portland area, make sure you are willing to make some decisions about time management because juggling class and trying to get there on time due to traffic can be difficult.

    learn how to get around using public transportation. portland is excellent in this sense. the light rail is free anywhere downtown.

    What to do for fun

    there is lots to do here in portland. it is a small city so if you enjoy nature, you get the best of both worlds. there is mount hood nearby where you can go skiing/snowboarding. there are also night clubs for those under 21. portland offers many activities! to name a few there is glow in the dark mini golf, nickle arcades, kayaking, cosmic bowling, movie theaters, malls and much much more!

    there is a saying here in portland, that is keep portland weird so expect to see a lot of unusual events to take place

    with psu you have large access to different organizations that recruit in campus. talk with an adviser and will show you the path to achieve you goals. my tip is to stay motivated.

    Tips for prospective students

    The campus is withIn free max transit system. Pretty much no cost for going to stores. You can live in your parents house if you live close to Portland. And use max as transportation. It's a way to save money, but you wouldnt exprience real college life.

    I am a challenge student, meaning I am getting 20 credits for taking two high school courses. Portland State also accepts Clackamas Community College credits I am receiving from other advanced classes. Thank you, PSU, for making my education more affordable! I would rate higher, but I believe education should be free.

    Because the school calls for students to take university studies classes you end up having to take some classes that are completely outside of your major. For me I took Women's Studies and I'm really enjoying it. It's a class would have never tried otherwise but it has become my favorite. And it's little things like this that makes this school interesting.

    I'm a student who lives on campus and thought that I'd never like it, but it turns out that it's really nice. It's never real loud around here and there's always something to do. I came from a small town where you had to drive everywhere to get to things to do. Here everything is with walking distance. The school itself has its own movie theater, game room and bowling alley. It has it's own pub that features Rogue Brewing Company's Portland State Ale, the Farmer's Market is in the cent of campus every Saturday and there are live concerts held on campus usually once a week featuring any type of music you could want.

    It's a great place, the biggest trick is making sure that get what you want out of it. The issue I always see is people come here expecting the streets to be paved on gold and their destiny will be dropped in their lap. If you want your education to be worth something, you have to do the work that it calls for. With that being said, PSU has the tools needed to help students to achieve it, they just need to strive for it.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be patient, but be diligent. Things move at a Portland pace here and there's a lot of students to get through. Do your best to stand out, but don't give up if your initial efforts aren't perfect.

    This place is great for everyone be it nerd, artist, hipster, jock or anywhere in between. There's a little bit of something for everyone here.

    Uh, the dorms are expensive... I haven't taken a look at the INSIDE of them yet, but this university costs just as much as another out-of-state university that I was considering. (I am an Oregon resident.)

    Get your applications and materials in early, otherwise you could have to deal with the rush of applications around the due date. Also, GO TO YOUR professors' office hours. They are really important and are a great way to get to know your professors and how they like to do things.

    I have only taken one class at this university, but I learned a lot in that class. It was BA 101 with Hirons.
    Did enjoy being here

    The class I took was a night class and was four hours long. Make sure it is worth it to you to stay until the class is over. I did, but students that did not had a harder time with the quizzes.

    Portland State is a great university from what I can tell, but if you live on the dorm, you are paying double than if you live at home with your parents, and the classes are about $20 per credit than a community college.
    Tips for prospective students

    Do not forget to take into account fees like transportation fees, textbook fees, backpack, calculator or scantron fees. Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Scholarships are how I could afford to attend a class at PSU!

    PSU is very urban. Be prepared to walk everywhere you go. The streetcar is great, and free for most of the area it runs through.

    While I've yet to visit this school, several of my friends who have, and whose opinions I trust greatly, say that they have a great campus that is very beautiful and have very attractive academics. ;) That being said I can't wait to attend :)

    Being here at Portland State isn't just about learning academics, it's about learning how to cope in different environments. I feel like while attending PSU I can learn more about myself and how I can improve on my skills when it comes to being out on my own. Along with the personal learning, I can say that the professors here are very good at what they do. I haven't had one class where I felt like I wasn't learning anything.

    I love the environment that PSU provides. Not only is this a successful college, but it's a major part of the Portland community. I love knowing that I can be apart of the city while working towards my degree.

    No matter what college a student attends, money will always be a concern. While being here at Portland State, I have never felt as though I wasn't going to be able to find a way to pay for my tuition. With financial aid and the massive amounts of scholarships that are offered, not attending because of money issues isn't a problem. Each and every class is full of information, and the professors are more than willing to give you the assistance you need. I would say that I'm paying a little amount compared to the amount of schooling and attention I am receiving.

    Portland State is great for all different types of students. We have a strong, diverse, and driven student body here at PSU. If you are the type of person who likes to have options, who likes to get involved, or who wants a good education, then PSU is the place for you!

    As far as general ed requirements go, a community college would be cheaper, but PSU is a great school for graduate studies.

    PSU has so many different majors (and minors). Read through all the options before you decide because you may find a major/minor that is perfect for you that you didn't know was available.
