    Am learning a lot

After one semester in my classes at Saint Louis University, I can practically run circles around my old high school friends academically. The classes here are very challenging but great for anyone who truly desires a quality education. It takes dedication and a desire to succeed here at Saint Louis University. When I graduated from high school, I was searching for a challenge because I never really was. Saint Louis University met that challenge head on and I learned more in this first semester than I ever did in high school and lots more than all of my old friends from high school! I was completely thrown off when I attended classes for the first week because they were fast-paced, information filled, and a little overwhelming. I soon learned how to become more organized, manage my time better, and truly learn. These things were not optional, but had to be done so that I could succeed there. For all high school students seeking a great Undergraduate college for Pre-Medicine, Pre-Law, Aerospace engineering, Physical Therapy, or Nursing, this college is top-notch and one of the best in the country for academics. The amount you will learn in one semester here at Saint Louis University will completely blow your mind, and you'll learn more than you could have ever imagined possible.

    Am enjoying being here

Saint Louis University it is my favorite place to be in the world! All the people I have met here are caring and wonderful people. I can't imagine attending any other college because I believe that not only the academics wouldn't compare, but the environment in which you are in on and off campus is second to none. My new friends I've made I know will be life long friends that I will stay in touch with no matter where life takes me. We all have helped each other out and continue to do so, not because we have to, but because our floor has become a community. We look out for each other where ever we go and because of this, Saint Louis University is so enjoyable. I've heard similar stories from all of my other friends in different residence halls so it is not a isolated case. I believe it is because of SLU's learning communities. Learning Communities are people who live on the same floor who have similar majors and goals in life. This means that most of the people in learning communities are taking the same classes and experiencing the same hardships which makes it very easy to understand what people are going through and to help each other out. Everyone on campus is really friendly, including the professors! I stopped by my chemistry teacher's office one day because a problem on my test was not graded correctlyand we ended up talking for over and hour about family, gravity, and zero degrees Kelvin! I know it sounds nerdy but it was one of the most interesting conversations I've had. The thing that got me though was he has a lecture hall full of students and he still has time to talk to me for an hour and the only reason the conversation ended was because I had to head to work!
The off campus experience is just as amazing. There are plenty of things to do in the city of Saint Louis and SLU students get discounts on many of the nearby performing arts centers such as Powell Symphony Hall and the Fabulous Fox Theatre. At Powell Hall SLU students can get $90 tickets for $10! The metrolink is also nearby which takes you to pretty much anywhere in Saint Louis that is worth visiting. This includes Forest Park (which is the largest park in the world). Forest Park houses the Muny which is the biggest outdoor theatre in the world! I've been to shows there and they have all been so amazing and there are also free seats! So you can go have a night out without spending any money at all! There are art museums and the St. Louis Zoo in forest park also and they are free too. The only thing you have to pay for is the Metro ticket which is $2.25 each way. Can you imagine only spending $5.50 but getting to go to the Zoo, see a profession theatre show, and get to appreciate some great art? No where else can you find a deal like that. The metrolink also stops by the Delmar Loop, which houses tons of restaurants and concert venues. Pi is the best pizza place you will ever go to and I'm not the only one that thinks that, even the President has it at the White House because it is so delicious! Froyo is a frozen yogurt/ice cream restaurant that will tickle your taste buds into delight because no other ice cream shop matches Froyo. Also there is the Pageant, which is a concert venue and I saw my favorite band there! The tickets only cost $18 and I got to get as close as I wanted! There are limitless possibilities at Saint Louis University and there is always something to do on and off campus. If you come here, you're in the prime spot to make tons of great memories with new friends but also to be challenged academically.

    Bang for the buck

Though Saint Louis University is an amazing college, it is very expensive. I'm hoping that I can go back myself next semester because I'm not sure if I'll be able to pay. There is a bright side to this though, Saint Louis University hands out plenty of scholarships and helps you find grant money, especially if you are in need. I have over $12,000 of pure scholarship money that SLU awarded me. This is money I don't have to pay back and is renewed every single year for up to four years. I don't know about you but $12,000 is a lot of money to me and there are plenty of other scholarships out there that SLU awards, you just have to get on the site and search for them. Also, if something happens in your family, SLU understands and helps you pay for college if you go to them and talk to your financial aid counselor. They will do everything in their power to help you make it to SLU if you can't do it on your own. One more thing to mention is that it is well worth it. As I stated earlier, I can't imagine going anywhere else or being at any other college. Not only am I challenged academically and learn a ton, the people here are wonderful. Saint Louis University is definitely a college to consider because you get more than your money's worth back in the form of quality education, strengthening of faith, and personal growth.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply as early as possible and definitely apply for the presidential scholarship at www.slu.edu. Click on the scholarship link and I think you can find it.
Go visit the college. Never decide on any college before you visit it. I completely love it and I believe you will too, but I could be wrong, it might not be the right fit for you.
I didn't have anyone from my high school come to SLU and I have made great new friends so don't feel as though the college is too big for you.
Talk to your financial aid counselor. This is true for where ever you go. You always want to get the exact numbers on how much it will cost and how much aid you will get.

Great for these types of students

    Pre-Medicine
    Physical Therapy
    Nursing
Pretty much anything in the Medical Field
    Pre-Law
    Aerospace Engineering
    Social Work

Students who want to be challenged and desire preparation for their career choice. SLU will definitely prepare you for whatever you want to do in life with great education and internship opportunities later on in your college career.

The programs here at Saint Louis University are world-class. The degree that you will have with the University's symbol will definitely be positive in getting a job in your chosen field in this competitive economy. A set of core requirements break each student from his or her intended major by requiring theology, philosophy and ethics classes to develop holistic people instead of just specialists with little diversity. The lower level classes can be difficult because the professors don't always have an idea of standard levels for classes. This means that a 100 or 200 level professor may expect higher level work and 300 and 400 level professors may require far less than similar levels of classes. At times this can be difficult, but once you get into the upper levels of your intended major, the teachers really get to know each student and work with all classes individually to make sure that they don't simply focus on quantity, but rather acknowledge the factor of quality in education.

    Am enjoying being here

The community at Saint Louis University is incredibly diverse with space for students from every background with just about every major and interest. If you make a conscious effort to make friends, you will be overwhelmed with the number of people you find who have similar interests. The campus is wonderful; it is an urban campus that feels like a suburban campus with the safety and beauty of the campus. There are almost 100 full time professional security personnel making the campus virtually without incidence of crime from urban sources. The campus plants over 27,000 flowers and prides itself on the amount of green space provided to students for enjoyment and beauty. There are also over 125 clubs and organizations that are open to all students, meaning that it is very difficult to not fit in on campus and become involved in a positive manner.

    Bang for the buck

The cost of the university may seem staggering when first looking at it, but breaking the cost down makes it more manageable. The cost without assistance is approximately $40,000 with tuition, meals, housing and all fees. However, 97% of students receive financial aid. Merit awards alone range from $4,000 to full tuition. Need-based awards can significantly reduce costs further. The bill may still be large, but in the long run, a Saint Louis University education will make students stand out in the workplace and earn more money than students from other universities and students without formal education.

    Tips for prospective students

There are thousands of universities in the United States and worldwide; don't be bound to colleges and universities that your parents want you to go to. Make sure that the school that you choose is right for you. Before you decide to visit 50 schools before senior year, take time to carefully look at each and rate your preferences or desires you hope to find in a school. This will help eliminate some stress of applying as you have narrowed your choices from 50 to 5 or 10. Talk with students on every campus you decide to apply to. I didn't do this, but I know now talking with prospective students that it can be incredibly valuable since they don't have a vested monetary interest when talking with you like an admissions office will. While it is by no means necessary, narrowing down a few possible areas of study will drastically reduce the amount of stress with both applying to and ultimately choosing a school.

Great for these types of students

Students seeking a diverse community of learning that focuses in developing educated, well-rounded individuals and not just field specialists with no ability to interact with others. This can also include students looking for a school with the ability to take an active part in religious, social and justice issues.

The classes here are great (although I am speaking from a more science-based perspective as a premed student). I took a heavy science load during my first semester, and I liked how detailed the instruction was. Most of the freshman science classes are quite large, so the teachers use things like projectors, microphones, PowerPoint, and RSF clickers to help students stay engaged. The grading curve makes things even better! The lectures can become a little boring, though, and it can be a challenge to stay engaged during classes; however, they are only fifty minutes long, and they only meet three times a week, so it isn’t that bad. The labs, which run almost three hours, are quite different. Although they are quite long, they seem to go pretty fast because the experiments are really interesting.
The smaller classes, such as my African American studies course, were even better; I love discussion-based classes, and the instructors really encourage active debate and discussion in the classroom.
I am also a business major, and the business school is great! Saint Louis University has a highly respected business school, and a top entrepreneurship program. They also allow students the opportunity to take an intro business class during the first semester of their freshman year that covers accounting, finance, management, and other business fields, which is great for a student who is unsure of what they want to do.

    Am enjoying being here

I am a commuter, so getting involved on campus is very important for me. Saint Louis University really makes it easy! There are so many groups and organizations on campus: CEO Club (for aspiring execs), art clubs, musical groups and much more. As a Jesuit institution, there are many religious and community service groups on campus as well. Also, despite a lack of diversity on campus, there are many organizations for minorities, such as the Black Student Alliance, the Muslim Student Association, as well as groups for Asians and Hispanic students.

    Bang for the buck

The school is really expensive! To be honest, I am not sure if the bang outweighs the buck! For example, the dorms, which are the size of a large one person bedroom, have 2-3 people in them, at a price tag of $4000-$5000 a semester. The interesting part, though, is that there are dozens of off campus apartments and dorms that are half the price, twice as large, and are across the street from the main part of campus! Food is pretty expensive, too; as a commuter, I get $200 a semester for food on campus, where the average meal is $7, which is hard to manage (considering that I not only attend class everyday, but I also work on campus). Between all the fees (rec center, lab, etc), books, and other necessities, it can get pretty expensive.
However, Saint Louis as a whole is not an expensive city; there are so many cheap and free things to do around campus. In addition, there are many great and free services, like the Weekend shuttle, which runs a big loop around the city from the campus to the grocery store, the local mall, and Target for free, the free van rentals for students to use, the wonderful and free career services department, and the many free breakfast and lunch programs around midterms and finals time. The university is also generous with scholarships (yet they range from $4000-$13000, while the cost of attendance is around 40K).

    Tips for prospective students

    * Get involved on campus! There is so much to do.
    * Look for an on-campus job early. The jobs are good (great pay, flexible hours, interesting work), but waiting too late to look can mean no job, or working min wage at a local restaurant
    * Check the bulletin board/newslink/slu connection to find out what is going on at the main campus. There are so many cool things that you may not hear about that are going on.
*Check your SLU email! This is probably the most important thing to do. This is the university's first choice method of communication, so not checking it could have disastrous effects.
*APPLY, and do it early! It's free if you apply online, and the scholarship apps are due quite early (most of them do not require a separate app!). What do you have to lose?

Great for these types of students

Pre-med students- prominent undergrad premed program (Pre Med Scholars program), competitive and challenging, but manageable, strong support system
*Business students- great opportunities for everyone (including freshman!), AACSB accredited B school (the highest accreditation), highly rated programs
*Any student that wants to do their own thing, or is unsure of what they want to do- contract/design your own major programs, excellent career services, lots of major exploration opportunities and courses (Major exploration course, intro courses that allow you to sample different program within the context of one class, etc)
*Things to look into: Honors program, Manresa, Service Leadership, Advancing Women in Leadership, iLead

I was nervous going into classes at SLU because in high school classes were too easy. After being challenged and being put to the test of studying and putting effort into classes, I realized that I was actually learning information, especially in Allied Health biology, chemistry, and in Spanish. Initially I thought I would learn the information well enough to take the tests and then it would just leave my mind. However, I have been able to share with my family interesting aspects of the classes and hold decent conversations with them. SLU's classes are definitely worth your while, and although they may be challenging, they truly test your smarts and dedication.

    Am enjoying being here

Not only are classes extremely interesting and the professors have been helpful, but the students are all very welcoming and friendly. It is so easy to make friends, both freshman and upperclassmen. The location of the campus is also perfect. The view from my room is the arch in St. Louis. It's a beautiful sight. The University puts a lot of effort into keeping the campus clean and beautiful with the landscaping so it is very visually appealing. We are also close enough to so many different shopping centers and activities that it is hard to get bored.

    Bang for the buck

Yes, St. Louis University is very expensive, but it is worth the money. Not only is the University very generous with scholarships, but the classes are worth your while and once you graduate from SLU, you will turn heads because it is a very prestigious University.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking about coming to SLU just realize that this school is not all party. It takes a lot of work and dedication and you will get out of it what you put into it. It will be very worth your while to go here!

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who are very serious about getting a good education, putting time into their majors, and meeting very sweet people.

The classes here are definitely helpful, and you can learn a lot from all the classes if you are willing to listen. The general science classes are rather large. The typical Gen Chem class is around 300 students, so it is hard to get personal attention from the professor unless you attend their office hours which they have several times every week. Other classes are smaller, such as Philosophy and Statistics. The professors genuinely care about their students and are willing to help them out. The classes are very challenging. If you want to do well, you must be ready to work hard. There are enough resources available to be successful here, but you must be willing to put in the time and the effort.

    Am enjoying being here

The social scene depends on what type of crowd you want to hang with. SLU has its share of frat parties almost every week. Thirsty Thursdays are popular with some students and there is a very active drinking and clubbing scene. If drinking and partying aren't your definition of fun, there are plenty of students who find other ways to have fun.
The SLU community is diverse and has very friendly people. It's really easy to make friends here if you make the effort. The floors in the dorms become very close very quickly and they become your second family. If you're part of a learning community or a FIG, you will have most of your classes with the people you live with. It helps everyone bond even more.
Although there isn't very much to do close to the SLU campus, the metro can take you to Central West End or the Loop where there are plenty of ways to have fun. SLU also offers a shuttle service that takes students to Wal-Mart, Target, the Galleria (mall), and Schnucks's (grocery store).

    Bang for the buck

SLU is a rather pricey school. Tuition and housing costs a bit more than $31,000, but the cost is expected to rise next year. There are many resources at SLU that might make it worth the cost. SLU has a strong Pre-Medicine scene. SLU is also pretty good about offering financial aid.

    Tips for prospective students

Have a good GPA, and be willing to work for your grade.
If you want a big city with many things to do right outside your door, this might not be the school for you, but there is a very active social scene.
SLU is very community service oriented, and it will have many opportunities for you to get involved.

Great for these types of students

Pre-Medicine students-especially if in the Medical Scholars Program
Students who want an active religious scene.

Saint Louis University had the best businesses professors, at least for that is what many business students would think. Other students in different majors, probably wouldn't be too interest in business classes. However, they wouldn't deny that the professors are very knowledgeable and make sure the students learned the most out of their classes. Also, they make the tests hard and the questions involving make applications. That made you think a lot and if you passed, it had proven that you master the materials. Even, that some classes that I took are not business courses; but in the end that professors made it interesting and helped me learned quite a lot out of that class. Take theology as an example: I came to SLU with a Buddhist religion and honestly had no interest in learning about Christian religion and all of the other information about it. However, the professor changed my mind. He made the class interesting and fun. Therefore, I was engaged into the class lecture a lot more than I thought I would. In the end, I ended up learning many interesting things about theology and more knowledgeable about the Christian religion than I was before.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoyed the Saint Louis University campus. It's beautiful decorated with many flowers in the opening areas. The buildings and classrooms are great, especially the John Cook Business School. Also, I get a chance to live on campus and it's such a good experience. The dorm rooms are great and the cafeteria foods aren't bad as the homemade foods. Also, Saint Louis University has so many programs and clubs for students to join

    Bang for the buck

Saint Louis University is really expensive, but I think the education here is worthwhile investing in.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) Keep up your high school cumulative GPA because it really does matters when it come for school and scholarship selections.
    2) Be involved and stay involved, the more involve in show how outstanding and outgoing you are. That is one of the most important thing colleges look for.
    3) Do apply as many colleges and universities as you wish, so that will give you a variety of choices to pick.
    4) Apply for a lot of scholarships, take advantages of scholarships offer for high school students because once you're a college student. There are not many scholarships offering for you.

Take a campus tour. I live in St. Louis and I never even knew how pretty the campus was until I toured it.

Great for these types of students

Catholics, someone looking for an urban setting, someone looking for a medium sized school, someone looking into nursing.

The professors here at SLU want you to succeed. They are willing to give you the extra time if you are not understanding the criteria.

SLU has a lot of activities for students. The student center is the main part of the campus and you will find that we have a lot of opportunities at the student center. The campus is also very diverse which encourages you to meet new people and learn about different cultures.

    Bang for the buck

SLU is worth the price you pay. You not only get a great education but you have the staff that is there to help you. It doesn't matter if you go to financial aid, registration or to a professor. It is worth it!

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to study! This is nothing like high school. The professors expect you to learn the information and to discuss it in class, so be prepared.

    Am learning a lot

As a public high school student, I have learned a lot about the Catholic faith and Jesuit mission from my time at SLU. Classes are small, which provides a better learning experience no matter what your faith leaning, but they also tend to focus on how the class is relevant to serving others. Besides the everyday grind of learning things for tests, SLU teaches students how to apply what they learn and has many opportunities to do so through retreats and service.

    Am enjoying being here

The student body is medium-sized, but sometimes has characteristics of a small, or large school. It is big enough where you don't see everyone all the time, but small enough to where you can create close relationships with a lot of people and teachers. The activities provided by student organizations are often just as good as major universities, but without the hassle of crowds and camping out for tickets. Campus is also a gated in part of the city which provides a sense of security when walking around at night.

    Bang for the buck

SLU does give a lot of scholarships which help out, but its tuition is quite steep. Depending on the scholarship you receive, you could probably get the same value at a good state school by being very active in service and community involvement.

    Tips for prospective students

Become active on campus as soon as arriving. SLU is a tough school academically and if you do not allot the time for extracurriculars when you are starting out, it will be tough to find the time later. Also, since it does sometimes have the feeling of a small campus, those that get in with administration for jobs and internships develop a loyalty and it is hard to find openings later unless you have some in with whatever you want to do on campus.

Great for these types of students

Students who love community service, hope to study abroad in Spain, enjoy being social, but not dependent on parties every night to have fun, and can conform to rules set in place by administration.

Saint Louis University is a wonderful university. The campus gives you the feel of being in the city but also being able to get away from all the hustle and bustle of it all. SLU offers a wide variety of opportunities that caters to students of all ethnicities and backgrounds. There is always something to do on campus form going to a club meeting, playing a game with friends, or attending a sporting event. Saint Louis University is a great university for those who want to further their education by challenging themselves and knowing that they are getting something out of the experience. Saint Louis University has been a worthwhile investment in my future and I will be forever grateful.

I am learning so much at SLU. I have had some great teachers. Chemistry was a little rough for me; I've never been a fan. I like my teacher as a person and as a teacher for the most part, but I still didn't really excel in his class half as much as I would have liked. It could be his way of teaching, his Russian accent, or my understanding of chemistry. Either way, he really did want us to succeed and he tried to put things in simpler terms. My professor for Intro to Anthropology was so enthusiastic and great that he unknowingly convinced over half of the class to have Anthropology as at least a minor or major. I also really enjoyed my biology teacher. She taught in a way that was easy to understand. I was surprised by how much the teachers really do want you to come for help if you need it.

    Am enjoying being here

As a prospective freshman, I was worried about whether I made the right decision but those worries disappeared during Welcome Week. When I was young, I went to a Catholic school until fourth grade. I also grew up in a fairly conservative republican town. Despite my surroundings, I grew up in theatre and those experiences shaped my much more liberal views. I was a little worried that SLU was a Catholic/Jesuit Institution and whether I would feel outnumbered by a more conservative crowd. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there really was a place for everybody. If you want a conservative crowd, you got it. A liberal one? There's a place for you too. Religious, non-religious, Muslim, Christian, Asian, African American. I've made some of my closest friends from the theatre and music department. A bunch of us went to Homocoming brought to us by Rainbow Alliance- a fun dance (with a classy ice sculpture) where everybody was welcome and had a ton of fun. Plus, I love having the city right there. It's literally a five minute walk to the beautiful Fox Theatre where my friend and I staked out the Stage door and got the Cast of Shrek's autograph. Oh, and did I mention that I am a pre-med Biology major with a minor in Anthropology and French? There really is something for everybody here. Also, if you are a party person there is always something going on whether it is a movie in the quad, a club meeting, or a party in the Lofts.

    Bang for the buck

Although it is a whopping $42,000 a year including room and board, they give out quite a bit in scholarships. I think we end up paying approximately $15-17,000 with loans and financial aid a year. The main problem is books. Science books especially are quite expensive; my chemistry book was $265 and my thin Anthropology book was over $100 but you will encounter that problem basically anywhere. Another plus is that the rec centre is fantastic with machines, pools, and raquetball and basketball courts.

    Tips for prospective students

Buy books on-line. I have found that book are MUCH cheaper on Amazon than the book store (though I would still cross reference the price with several sites like the book store, Chegg.com, Amazon, and e-bay. Also, I would advise that for U101 you do not buy the book. We were supposed to read the chapters, and I did at first, but we were never tested on it and we never did any of the pages inside. It's a workbook, so you also can't sell it back. If you do end up a needing it, there is an excellent chance that you can just borrow a friend's. For me, it was $30 down the drain.

Great for these types of students

Excellent Science program, but harder than other programs
Great for Pre-med/Nursing (and has a Med School)
Great for Studying Abroad (tons of programs world-wide and we have our own SLU campus in Madrid, Spain)
City people (has a CAMPUS feel but the city is right at your fingertips)
Theatre/ Sports People (Theatre District 5 minute walk and the Busch Stadium is a short MetroLink ride away)

    Am learning a lot

The academics at SLU are beyond excellent. I was always a person who didn't have to try in school, and that changed tremendously here. Although it's a lot of work, I am learning more than I ever thought I would. My mind has been blown by this school.

    Am enjoying being here

When I first started school in August, I thought SLU would be boring...all about the academics. Although almost everyone is very academically focused, this school is so much fun too! I'm a commuter student as well which can be tough, but they really make an effort to reach out and get everyone involved. From soccer games to community breakfasts and Greek rush week, everything is soooo enjoyable!

    Bang for the buck

SLU is mad expensive but the academics and student life are well worth the price. The name of this school on your degree will earn you more money after graduation.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for every scholarships and grant you can find!

Great for these types of students

    Academically motivated, like urban cities

Saint Louis University is a University that strives excellence in the Jesuit way and opening the minds of its students. It focuses on philosophy and community service, to better understand the world we live in and to make it a better place. SLU requires of its students excellence and tolerance to others.

    Tips for prospective students

For a prospective students coming to SLU, I urge them to become a part of a learning community, which will help them make friends during the crucial first week of their freshman year. Learning communities can help you meet people that have the same majors or interest as you.

    Academic Rigor

SLU excels in academics and wants students to do the same. They have renowned teachers that will challenge you but also make you a better person.

    Dorm Life

Although freshman dorms are very typical, SLU has amazing dorms when you become an upperclassmen.

    Food and Dining

The food is quite amazing here at SLU. The chefs here strive to make their food more healthy and better for their students.

    What to do for fun

SLU is always having some type of event going on every week.

    Bang for the buck

SLU is quite expensive, but you will get a lot out of the school if you participate in their events. They give free food, shirts and other stuff almost every week.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The most serene location on campus is the clock tower. This is the center of the main campus and a common place for ideas and community.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for pre med students. The classes are challenging, but I think it will prepare you well for the MCAT.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for every subject matter and everyone should get involved in the clubs.

    Greek Life

The greek life is not substantial here, for this school is not a party school.

    Campus Safety

There has been a few incidents with robbers, but SLU is now upgrading its security.

The campus is beautiful; it is extremely well cared for and it's a beautiful place to walk around. The academics are very challenging, particularly if you are pre-med, but the program has a very good reputation. The student population is in general very personable, not greek dominated, and dedicated to involvement and service opportunities.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for scholarships often and apply for a lot of them; the tuition is rising yearly and it's already very expensive so be realistic! Get involved; SLU is particularly well-known for being involved in community service and volunteer opportunities so if you have any interest in humanitarianism and getting to know a lot of great people in the process, SLU is a great place to do that. In addition to service, come ready to work in your classes. SLU has rigorous academics but a great reputation for a well-rounded education as the curriculum will include exposure to classes like theology and philosophy in addition to other core requirements that cover an expanse of topics and disciplines.

    Academic Rigor

If you are pre-med, expect to spend many dedicated hours hitting the books. Your first year, even your first semester, will be particularly difficult and telling as far as how committed you are to staying on a pre-med track as well as whether or not you are able to keep up with the rigorous amount of work you are given. Do everything you can to make that first semester successful: talk to upperclassmen, live in a learning community, go to office hours, befriend people in your classes, etc. The pre-med track is no joke, so be prepared to have to catch up to a learning curve and to not always do as well as you may be used to doing. However, with the rigorousness of the program comes a great reputation: SLU has one of the top ten pre-med programs in the country.

    Dorm Life

I was fortunate enough to have a really great floor of people that I've stayed friends with all year. I live in Reinert Hall and I really recommend trying to live there your first year. You have tempurpedic beds, private bathrooms, individual air conditioning and heating, a cafeteria just downstairs, and access to study rooms that are open 24 hours a day if you don't want to trek all the way over to the library. If you are sociable the first few weeks, you'll meet people and your floor will feel more like home.

    Food and Dining

The dining is slowly improving. The food service here is actually doing a great job of responding to their suggestion boards. Students write what they want to see as far as food variation on these boards and usually within a week they try and add this into their regular rotation of food. It's nice to feel like you are being heard!

    What to do for fun

There's a lot to do if you know where to look. There are speakers here all the time, concerts, sports events, and intramurals if you want to get involved during your free time. There are restaurants close by and the fox theater is just down the street. If you have a car there are several malls close by. There is a full mall with a movie theater in brentwood; just a few exits away! There are little strip malls with thrift stores and antiques with places to eat close by as well. Forest park and the zoo are also close by and both are free! There is a bowling alley just down the street which also has a movie theater attached. The grassy areas on campus also make for great places to either relax, or play frisbee, wiffleball, soccer, or to toss around a baseball.

    Bang for the buck

Is SLU expensive? Yes. I personally have to take out loans for each year of my education. But, if you take the time to apply for scholarships and if you have a strong academic background from high school, you can afford to go here. There's a lot to do here and the catholic jesuit education is a unique one you won't get at a state school. You have an integration of service, community, and academics and SLU is dedicated to educating and helping you develop all parts of yourself, not just your education. You have access to a lot of resources and a lot of great opportunities. I feel that you will get the most out of what you pay for here if you take advantage of the programs, resources and events that SLU offers.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Our mascot is the Billiken. So what is it? Well, it looks like a leprechaun and Buddha mixed together... but it's a mystical, mischievous creature that brings luck. There are different amounts of luck based on how you come into possession of your Billiken. You get certain amounts of luck for buying your own, receiving one, giving one away, or for the most luck, you have to steal one. Kind of interesting mascot... We know. Just call it a Bill to avoid the fact that it's a little strange.

Also cool fun fact? The movie the Exorcist? Based on a true story... that happened at SLU. Some of the priests involved? Father Reinert, Archbishop Ritter... As in Reinert Residence Hall and Ritter Hall... if you are really interested in the story, they have an entire section at the library dedicated to it and a man there who is very knowledgeable about the whole ordeal. Kind of cool.

Great for these types of students

SLU is great for anyone who is willing to serve their community and their campus. SLU is great for people who are driven and ambitious (especially if you are on that pre-med track). SLU is also great for people who are interested in meeting people that are kind and people that care about their community.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a million and a half clubs on campus and there are several fairs during the year where clubs set up booths and you can roam through the quad getting free information and usually free water bottles or food of some kind while learning about each of the clubs you have interest in. SLU has intramural teams, service fraternities (Alpha Phi Omega), Greek Life, sports teams, musical ensembles, clubs that address student health, clubs that organize large events on campus, clubs dedicated to ethnic dances, etc. If you can't find it on campus, it's also extremely easy to start up your own club!

    Greek Life

Greek Life is not dominant here. There are no Greek Houses on campus and there is no hazing involved in the process of pledging. Sororities and Fraternities get kicked off campus for hazing. Greek Life is a great way to meet a lot of new people, to create some great friendships, and to have a social calendar. It is a time comittment, so be aware of that going in, but I have many friends that are in frats or sororities and they love it! If you don't want to do a traditional Greek setting, pledge APO. APO is a co-ed service fraternity on campus that has fewer of the traditional practices, but is completely dedicated to service! It's a great way to meet people and get involved in service opportunities.

    Campus Safety

We have people monitoring our front desks of every residence hall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We also have the Department of Public Safety that is always around. We also have SLURIDE. If you are stuck somewhere late at night and don't feel comfortable walking home, you can call SLURIDE and they will send someone to come and get you and escort you home. All around campus they also have emergency phones that will immediately dial out to DPS and 911 if you are ever in trouble. For being in the middle of Saint Louis, which is supposedly one of the most dangerous cities in the country, I have never felt unsafe anywhere on or near campus. Obviously bring your common sense along with you, but in general, campus is well-protected and students feel safe here. It's a second home.

It is a great place to go to school I could not imagine being anywhere else. The campus is beautiful and well kept. They are very passionate about the students.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to be open and meet a lot of people, its what makes your time the most enjoyable. Get involved but don't get over involved that you have no time for yourself.

    Academic Rigor

The faculty at SLU want you learn and to succeed in life. In all of the classes that I have taken the professors have challenged me in a variety of ways. Applying the concepts to the real world seems to be most important.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. Living in Reinert is a bit of a pain because it is kind of far from the rest of the campus, it seems cut off.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of options for dining and especially if you are vegan or vegetarian. However, the hours of operation could be a little more accommodating to the late night schedule of students.

    What to do for fun

There are so many activities put on by different programs on campus as well as many things to do that are in walking distance from campus. Going to the city museum is only a cab ride away but a worthwhile experience.

    Bang for the buck

The best bang for your buck would have to be the restaurant Pappy's Smokehouse. It is a BBQ joint with nationally recognized food at reasonable prices. There aren't too many places near campus that are cheap for college students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Rubbing the billiken's belly for good luck has to be the most popular tradition on campus.

Great for these types of students

For students who like coffee and great sandwiches, Cafe Ventana is a block off campus and is an excellent place to study or catch up with a few friends. For students who like to exercise, Forest park is about 3/4 of a mile away and has many paths for running, walking or biking.

    Clubs and Activities

There is so much to get involved in at SLU. There is something for everyone's interest. And if you want to start a new club its pretty easy too.

    Greek Life

Greek life is an awesome way to get involved in the community and make lifelong friends. However it is not mandatory and you still make amazing friends without it. SLU has a great balance of greeks and non-greeks.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is continuously improving. There hasn't been a time when I felt unsafe on campus. DPS has your best interest in mind and it is very comforting.

saint louis university is a great school to attend if you are determined to have a prestigious school behind you. it isn't too small nor too big, so you are able to see the same people but different people everyday. if you are to attend this school for any of its science programs or math programs, be cautious that they aren't easy but seem to weed out the weak in the first year.

    Tips for prospective students

prospective students should be open-minded to the diversity at slu because we have a large population of international students. also, do not take your first semester for granted because your grades can be strongly affected if you take the first semester easily.

    Academic Rigor

classes here can be academically challenging at times but as long as you keep up with steady studying habits, you can make it.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is great! even though it is a small room you may have to share with someone you don't know, they try to match you up with a person with similar patterns as you from what time you wake up to your cleanliness. depending on the building you live in and the price you want to pay plus where on campus you want to be, everyone can find a place for them.

    Food and Dining

personally, i'm not picky so i love all the variety and slu from there normal dining hall to their burrito place and chick-fil-a, it offers plenty of variety. even one that is open until 2am.

    What to do for fun

there are countless activities on the weekends at slu to do from dances to movie nights. plus, basketball games are pretty big here.

    Bang for the buck

slu is an expensive school and i feel like you pay for the name of saint louis university. it offers great classes but some can be very difficult. to pay so much for a school and not do so well in a class can hurt but they push for excellence.

saint louis university is a campus bustling with diversity, excitement, and opportunities. the education is top-of-the-line, and there are many ways to get involved. this university has a place for everyone, no matter what your background or interests are.

    Tips for prospective students

do not be afraid to get involved right away. if you do not make an effort to meet people, it will be difficult to meet them. also, be aware of campus safety by always traveling in groups, especially at night.

    Academic Rigor

academically, slu is an excellent university. i am constantly being challenged and my mind and worldview are expanding all the time. so far, one of the things i have come to value most about slu has been the holistic view to an education that we have here; the liberal arts education allows students to connect many aspects of life into one comprehensive education.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is very fun here! i lived in a learning community my first year at slu, and that was a great experience. i was able to meet other students with the same interests as me, and we became one big family. however, i will say it was difficult to meet people besides those who were on my floor last year. it would have been fun to live in the main freshmen dorm instead.

    Food and Dining

overall, the food is good for college cuisine. the best place to eat on campus in my opinion is abp in the student center, which offers soup, sandwiches, and salads. there is also a subway on campus, which is wonderful. terra ve offers vegetarian and healthier options for food, which is also one of my favorites. the only complaint i have about the campus food is the inconvenient weekend hours.

    What to do for fun

since slu is located right in midtown saint louis, there are interesting things to do throughout the city. forest park is a popular attraction which includes the free zoo, science center, art museum, and history museum. i personally enjoy going downtown to watch the cardinals at busch stadium. another fun area nearby is the central west end, which is filled with restaurants and shops.
on campus, most people just hang out in apartments or dorms and go to the sporting events. the student activities board also offers fun things to do on the weekend like spa nights or have small bands come in to perform or movie nights.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the biggest joke about our campus is the unending and increasingly bizarre plethora of statues scattered about campus. they are everywhere, and many of them are extremely weird and creepy. many of them are of naked people or angels. one is a mixture of a male and female parts, with a gaping hole in the chest. others are children reading or sitting on benches. no one understands why they are there or why they are so strange, but they definitely make the campus unique.

Great for these types of students

slu is great for students who care about their education and who care about broadening their worldview. every student who comes here experiences growth in some way due to the education here.

    Clubs and Activities

there is a very wide variety of activities and clubs to choose from at slu. a lot of clubs involve service or social justice themes. in addition, there are a lot of clubs for people interested in different sports (ultimate frisbee, outdoors club, extreme kayak club, etc.). there are also a lot of clubs associated with academics or majors.

    Greek Life

greek life at slu is great and different than other universities that i have heard of. i am involved in greek life here, and i am very glad that i am. the emphasis of being greek here is not only about having fun and making new friendships, but it is really about expressing and living out the values of the sorority or fraternity. the entire greek community is supportive of each other, rather than competitive. everyone holds each other up to a high standard of conduct, as well.

    Campus Safety

campus safety is good on campus. even though slu is not located in the best part of town, the security on campus makes me feel safe. the department of public safety patrols at night in their cars and on bike. there are also emergency poles with phones on them located around campus. they also provide escorts late at night if a person needs one.

overall i am really enjoying life in college. the university has equally blended the rigor of academics with love for serving the greater good of the world. i am really glad i chose to go to slu.

    Tips for prospective students

definitely have a routine to get things done, or prepare certain ways to keep up with classes, homework and activities. the dates and assignments pile up fast if you become too relaxed and not be responsible. saint louis university is no joke!!! (this is especially for students who plan on taking multiple chemistry courses throughout their four years.)

    Academic Rigor

i feel that i am getting the most out of my classes overall, i cannot say that my experience with all of my teachers so far have been the greatest, but majority of them give as much help as they can.

    Dorm Life

i am really happy i chose reinert to be my dorm for this year, i really like the environment of the space, and my roommates are awesome. depending on which floor you live on it can get pretty noisy, but it'll stay out in the hall if you let it. everyone is really friendly and is most importantly here to work.

    Food and Dining

the dining services on campus are good. if you have no taste for any dorm food, (which is totally understandable on most days) there are plenty of options to choose from. whether it be on campus, or off a few steps away. i definitely enjoy the extra dining options most, and the meal plans they have set up for us is really convenient with my certain tastes on different days.

    What to do for fun

despite being in the city, you have to look for most fun off of campus and around the st. louis area, it isn't very hard, but there are a lot of curfews in certain places. but slu does a good job in putting on fun activities on campus the student activities board does a lot of planning to get people motivated to stay on campus to have a little fun.

    Bang for the buck

my true opinion: slu is very pricey, and is getting pricier. but in most cases it is worth it for the education being received.

Great for these types of students

this university is great for students who want a rigorous education, a diverse education, and the passion to follow the jesuit teachings. the jesuit teachings provide us with the strength to do good inside the university and spread that good into the community and the world, whether by education, religion, community service etc.

    Clubs and Activities

there are plenty of clubs and activities to choose from, and the numbers significantly grow daily. i joined the intermural lacrosse club for a season and it was so great. i felt better that i was participating in a group and meeting new people along the way. a lot a of groups do a lot of activities, ranging from school work to going to the city museum every so often. it is a good bet to find out more information about clubs and activities here and slu.

    Greek Life

greek life is not huge on the campus, but there are plenty of sororities/fraternities to choose from if interested in getting into one. fall rush is really big when it comes to sororities. most of our greek life is dedicated to service and certain activities involving community service or certain majors and interests. so if it is a desire to get into greek life, then check it out.

    Campus Safety

overall i do feel safe when it comes to campus security, my only complaint so far is that in the biggest of dormitories, there has been an increase of technology watching the dorm but less security guards at the actual front desks and more patrolling the campus. in all honesty, i would rather have security guards on watch of the front desk then students. because the front desks are now attended by students 24 hours a day. that would be my only complaint.

    Am learning a lot

I could not praise the programs here more. I had no idea what my majors entailed before coming to SLU and the extent that each would reach. The classes have a great 13:1 student-teacher ratio so I get one on one time with teachers, making the learning environment even better. I'm in my sophomore year and feel like I've already learned more here than I did in 4 years of high school.

    Am enjoying being here

I feel like I belong here more than anything. Not only is St. Louis an amazing city to live in but the unity and community that SLU fosters is incredible. I can't imagine a better college experience thus far.

    Bang for the buck

    Am learning a lot

At SLU, all students are required to take Intro to Theology, Intro to Philosophy, and Ethics. Even from these first few classes I learned so much, especially how to think. All of my professors have outstanding backgrounds and tons of experience. Most of all, all the professors care that you learn something that matters, not just memorizing facts and dates. They really want you to come out of SLU with a world-class education!

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE being at SLU!! There is a great campus life and the housing situation is great. Everyone who lives on campus is closely located - especially freshman, who occupy two dorms. It creates a great community of students. There are activities nearly every night - basketball games, movies, concerts, all sorts of things. Sometimes I wish there was less to do so that I wouldn't have to miss anything!

    Bang for the buck

SLU is definitely not an inexpensive school, but you pay for a world-class education. They also make an effort to get every student some sort of aid, whether it's a merit scholarship or financial aid. The housing is all great quality, and the meal plans are ridiculous. Definitely gained some weight while on the meal plan... Watch out for that. But overall, SLU is worth the money.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely visit! When you're there, ask to see dorm rooms in the Reinhart and Gries complex, both in Gries Tower and Walsh or Clemens depending on if you are a girl or boy (respectively). Spend some time where you think you will spend the most time at school - the library, the student center, the gym, whatever interests you most. And check out College Church! It's beautiful. If you have time, go to the College Mass at 9pm on Sundays. It's my favorite part of the week! I might be there playing guitar even! :)

Hardworking students who want to learn a lot for the sake of learning. There is definitely a place for EVERYONE at SLU. Don't be afraid that it's Catholic. I definitely think anyone can go here!
