Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have enjoyed all but one teacher in my first year here at SF State. My teachers are committed to giving me the best education they can and that's a lot to ask for from a state school.
Am enjoying being here San Francisco is one of the best city's on earth, so yes, I am enjoying it here. The dorms at SFState are horrid, and I luckily did not have to live in them my first year. It is difficult to make friends in such a big school, but I'm still enjoying myself.
Bang for the buck Definitely a deal! If you find an apartment in the city instead of paying for the dorms you save a bundle of money, and get away from school once you're done with your classes.
Tips for prospective students The city, the school, the people, and the diversity of SF State make it a choice location for any perspective student. Everyone fits into this big school somewhere.
Great for these types of students EVERY TYPE!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Classes that are offered here at state are interesting. ALL professors here at state are passionate about their discipline and they are very helpful! We have great and supportive departments. I am a Biology major at state with hopes of attending UCSF for med school and they provide a lot of support. The Biology department is one of the best in the CSU system since SFSU has a lot of connections with Biotech companies in the bay area and health care companies. The Biology department is ranked #3 in the public universities when I read reviews about it.
Am enjoying being here I love the atmosphere of SF State. So much diversity. Find an organization that you're interested in & it will be the best move you'll ever make!
Bang for the buck I personally do not live in the dorms because I save so much money living in an apartment. I have friends at the dorms & I've been to all of the types of dorms at SF State. The Mary Ward Halls (freshmen dorms) are okay. Not much privacy, but you meet tons of people. The Towers & Village are the way to go if you're looking for apartment style living, But they are more expensive than the MW Halls. Tuition at SF is reasonable & being a student here has many advantages: Melting pot, transportation is cheap, & many opportunities for exposure available academically professionally in the city.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with an organization of your interest! It is the best way to network & advance yourself. Also, utilize the professor's office hours! It may be intimating at first, but once the professors can put a name to a face you will most likely gain a connection with them and learn a lot more. Check for your professor's teaching style & ratings on ratemyprofessor.com. CARP offers FREE tutoring in most subjects! The Cesar Chavez Student Center is awesome & is designed for student's success & their enjoyment. The library is still under reconstruction, but the Annex is one of the best places to get work done. Also, be prepared for the changing weather! It will be sunny one minute then cold and foggy the next.
Great for these types of students Every type of student! SF State offers a variety of opportunities for success and you live in one of the greatest cities! Many opportunities to network within the school & outside of SFSU.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot As I'm still a freshman, it's still a tad bit too early to pass final judgement on whether or not I'm learning a lot. However, I will say that I am so far enjoying all my classes and learning far more than I thought I initially would. Yes, what and how much you learn will vary by professor. I will admit that I'm learning a bit less than I hoped I would in one of my classes (I won't say which one) but most classes aren't like that. The professors are very approachable (except some may require you to make an appointment; my English professor does) and WILL help you in any way they can. Many students are intimidated at the prospect of having to talk to their professors one on one but that intimidation is what causes them to fail or at least do less than they hoped. Long story short, you'll learn a lot just be sure to visit your professors from time to time. Some of them will require you to a set number of times per semester.
Am enjoying being here I wouldn't still be here if I hated it here. This is a matter of personal taste but I LOVE the cold foggy weather. Although there have been cases of occasional sunlight. There is also a mall right next to the campus where students like to eat, go shopping, and just kick back. The campus is also about fifteen minutes or so away from the city (depending on how long you wait for a bus and train). San Francisco is filled with its fair share of restaurants, clubs, and general entertainment. It's a bit tourist-y but it's still fun nonetheless with all the sights and sounds.
Bang for the buck Tuition is expensive. It will take a lot of pooling resources and work to pay off any student debts one will potentially owe. However food is fairly cheap and you get a lot of it. In addition, there's 99 cent Arizona Iced Teas. No tax. Can't say no to that!
Tips for prospective students Like I said before, tuition is not cheap. It WILL take a lot of work to pay off any potential debts one may accumulate over a few years. That said, if you're still in high school and plan to apply and attend here, go for as many scholarships as possible. It shouldn't have to be said but I didn't go for a single scholarship in my high school senior year and now it's kinda biting me in the rear end. The more free money you can get to pay for college, the better off you'll be in the long run.
Great for these types of students I feel that SF State is a very well rounded school that anyone would enjoy attending. The biggest issue I've noticed among students is the weather. A lot of the kids (mostly from SoCal) have had some trouble adjusting to the weather in this area. It's usually foggy in this area however there has been a lot of sun recently. However, should one decide to go to school here one will have to get used to the cold weather. People that enjoy the cold (like me) will get along just fine.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The school offers a wide variety of options in classes and majors, and there is something for literally everybody. The teachers are very committed and always welcome students to visit them during office hours whenever needed and as often as possible for help in their class, on a paper, etc.
Am enjoying being here Everyone is so nice! I haven't ran into a single person that I've just thought, Wow, what a jerk. I live in the Towers at Centenial Square, and although the floors tend not in interact with each other as much as in the Mary Ward or Mary Park halls, the rooms are spacious and dormlife members (RA's) offer many fun events many times a week for us to participate in. San Francisco is an AMAZING city, and there is always something to do for everyone whether they like to go to club events, explore nature, attend meetings, or just take a simple walk to the beach.
Bang for the buck I haven't had to deal witha single problem that I'd wished my money hadn't been spent on. The only complaint I have is that the DC (dining center) isn't always perfect, but they like to experiment and offer a complaint/suggestions box. They are very stable with their basics though (salad bar, noodle place, stir fry, desserts, late night dining section, and worker-made salads are always available given the hour of the day). Also, if one is not happy with the DC other options such as Burritos in the Park (mexican food) and the Cantina (pizza, pasta, stomboli's) are open weekdays until 8 pm.
Tips for prospective students Personally, I wouldn't be nearly as happy living in such small quarters as the Mary's (average two person rooms with shared bathroom on the floor), so I suggest being on time with your housing applications and applying to the Towers or the Village at Centenial Square (which have multiple bedrooms, shared living rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom), unless you prefer to be in such close quarters with so many people. Also, don't be afraid to apply to a major that is impacted. I applied straight into the journalism major (one of the most if not THE most impacted major at SF State) without any previous experience, just a strong desire to learn journalism, and I got in! Also, pick an early date for your orientation if you do get accepted and choose SF State, because the fun classes fill up really fast! (I also suggest taking RPT 230, Growth Through Adventure. You go on three field trips: Rock climbing, ropes course, and snow camping [if you're in the Fall semester] or white water rafting [if you're in the Spring semester]. It is easily the most fun and exciting 3 units you will ever take!!)
Great for these types of students Open-minded students who love to be included in deciding your own educational process. There are countless activities in the quad, and students definitely have a strong say at SFSU. The ethnic studies college is HUGE here, and was actually the first ethnic studies college to ever be created. San Francisco is beautiful and endless, so those who like to explore AND have options should definitely at least apply here. Come tour the campus and you'll fall in love. :)

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot This school is great when it comes to one on one instruction. Attend office hours! I cannot stress how helpful they are if you miss a class or an important concept during a lecture. The classes offered here are wonderful and there are some enthusiastic instructors that can make a three hour lecture class sound like fun.
Am enjoying being here The campus is located in one of the most diverse and unique cities in the Country. You never forget you're in San Francisco, as every part of the city is just a bus ride away. You will constantly find yourself venturing downtown for either the night life or an exhibit. There is almost always some sort of festival or show going on somewhere. The city has a lot to offer, and the school is pretty good when it comes to advertising those opportunities. Aside from that, you can usually find something fun going on around campus, from student-organized Zombie apocalypses or stand-up comedy nights. There's something here for everyone.
Bang for the buck College is expensive, yes, and you'll find yourself frustrated more than a few times at excess costs, like textbooks and housing. But that isn't unique to SF State, you'll find that everywhere. Some courses are impacted, but that shouldn't stop you from at least researching the school. You can usually find thrifty ways of saving a few dollars by buying used books or making friends in the classes.
Tips for prospective students Attend office hours, attend office hours, attend office hours. Professors stay overtime to answer your questions, and most of them want your money to go to actually learning something. Take advantage.
Don't miss class. It's tempting to sleep through your morning classes, yes, but don't forget that you're paying for those.
Know your sleeping schedule before registering. If it isn't realistic for you to get up at 8:10 every Monday for a Math class, then don't register for that class. Register early.Great for these types of students It's a pretty varied campus. If you want a unique college experience, you're bound to find a unique niche here. The weather isn't for everyone, though, so be prepared for clouds and rain.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors that I had during my first semester at SF State were very helpful. I learned new things and got to review things that I have nearly forgotten. If a professor has office hours, use them, during those time your teacher can help you with things in a one on one environment
Am enjoying being here I love being in San Francisco, the weather could be a bit cold at times but other than that it is really beautiful, the campus especially.
Bang for the buck Transportation is cheap and gets you around San Francisco with ease.
Tips for prospective students For the first I recommend staying in the dorms, even though it is a bit expensive it allows you to meet and make a lot of friends.
Great for these types of students those who enjoy cold weather, and being surrounded by all types of personalities

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences You can tell that (most) teachers really care about their students, and have been doing their best to be there despite all of the drastic budget cuts. It has impacted the availability of services, which is disappointing; but you can see where the faculty and staff put out the extra effort in still making resources available and allowing the students to be informed. It is a great campus to be politically active or to be in a club and participate in community activities.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you know what your major is. Many majors are impacted, and having a major you end up changing is WAY better than being undeclared. Get to know the teachers, they are more than willing to get to know you and to help in any way they can to make your education easier.
Academic Rigor SFSU has good standing on academic rigor, and I would have to say that I have been challenged mentally in a very good way. Most professors I've had understand that students are human, and life doesn't happen on a semester basis. But they expect you to be interactive with your education, to take initiative in doing the assigned work, and coming to the professors in their office hours if you are having difficulties.
Dorm Life I live off campus with roommates, so I cannot say how the dorm life is. I've heard that the dorms are nice, but can be cramped which is to be expected. They are all very close to campus and make it a lot easier for transportation, especially if you are new to the city and don't know your way around yet. They aren't cheap though, so if you're looking to save money I highly recommend using the school's roommate finder and getting an apartment near campus.
Food and Dining The food in the cafeteria is excellent, they have a huge variety of different kinds of food from around the world to choose from. They have a large portion of healthier and vegetarian options which is very nice, since I do not eat meat. The pricing is a little high, but nothing so outrageous that it is completely non affordable for a student. You should be able to find something you like.
What to do for fun Join a club, or come to one of the talks done by a professor or other speakers. They can be very influential and informative. Being involved in the campus community can open up a lot of doors for networking and for information for graduate school if that's what you're interested in. There is almost always something going on in the Student Services center, and there are a lot of fun events to join in on. The theater has done some remarkable plays that are definitely worth seeing. Plus, you are only a short bus or train ride from the city which has endless possibilities for activities.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are a few hidden areas tucked away, secret gardens if you will. There are quite a few neat little paths that lead to areas where you can read, eat, hang out and listen to your ipod. There are natural benches made out of tree trunks all around campus and a lot of diverse and interesting architecture and sculptures.
Great for these types of students It is definitely a Liberal campus, and a lot of students are very politically active. If you are looking for a place to discover yourself and express your individuality, or to be a part of a group that is involved on or off campus, this is the place for you. This school is very welcoming to all ethnicities and walks of life.
Campus Safety I always feel safe on campus, even at night when the fog rolls in. If you're a girl though, it's probably wise to carry a small can of pepper spray with you as a precaution if you find that you walk alone at night often, regardless of where you are on or off campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences it's an easy school to love with a lot of options available. i think it's really easy to get around and the teachers really love their subjects. also, it's really cold.
Tips for prospective students they attract most of their freshmen by giving them first priority when signing up for classes, but once you're a sophomore that privilege vanished and it's really hard to get classes. don't use school internet when signing up for classes because it might crash.
Academic Rigor i'm a japanese major and my teachers definitely demand the best. there's only one teacher i don't personally like, but most students love that one and can't figure out the rest. i've found all of my classes to be rewarding because i can't just twiddle my fingers, as every teacher, not just in my department, cuts through all the bull you can give like it's butter. of course, the key to doing well is showing up and paying attention, but this school really suits everyone i've met here, so if you choose to attend, you'll probably like the academics as well.
Dorm Life i loved residential life, but not the cost. i made so many friends living on campus that i wouldn't have met otherwise. it's easy to find your second family here, so if you do live on campus, i promise you there's a 95% chance you won't regret it.
Food and Dining food depends on where you live. if you're stuck on campus with the 19 meal plan that your mom got because she was convinced you'd starve, there are three places you can go. the dining center offers variety but they aren't always that good, cantina always has pizza and pasta, and if you need your burrito, check to see if larry is in cafe in the park. you will love him.
however, if you're feeding yourself, the cesar chavez student center has really good restaurants downstairs, and ike's place is supposed to be opening there (get there early as they have a long line type of reputation). eating at school is really easy, and delicious, but if you ever feel the need there's a mall just across the street to the north with a food court, olive garden, and a trader joe's.
and of course, eating else where in the city if bound to be an experience you'll enjoy. What to do for fun it's san francisco, what can't you do? it's so easy to get anywhere fast and there are tons of cites, and people, that can let you in on anything going on. sf is small but that just makes finding what you want easier. there's something for everyone in this city, but i do recommend staying away from the tenderloin.
Bang for the buck tuition is not the expensive part about attending this school-- it'll cost as much as any other csu or su you go to. the tricky part is living, but you'll save thousands by living off campus, and then it's up to you to not go crazy when you're downtown. public transportation is cheap, easy, and incredibly reliable, so i recommend using it as much as possible.
Great for these types of students every kind! sf state has an open arms approach to its students, and once you get a couple of layers on, you'll be hugging back. while yes it is a liberal arts school, their business and science departments are no joke.
Clubs and Activities there are so many activities and options when it comes to clubs at sfsu. if you live in the residence halls, talking to resident assistants can make finding the right on campus group easy. in the residence halls we have everything great about you (egay, an lgbtqqa group), black residents of university housing (bruh, open to people of all races), and every hall has a student run government that works to make living on campus fun. on the main campus you have every club you'd expect at such a diverse school. here's a full directory: http://www.sfsu.edu/~lead/org/index.html
most of these clubs are incredibly active and work incredibly hard to keep their members happy.
for students interested in study abroad or learning new languages and cultures, joining the international education exchange council (ieec) is the absolute best thing you can do. they are by far the most active club that i know of and there are tons of international students that just want american friends. they've also won awards for their work.Greek Life greek life is not too obvious on campus at sfsu. this is because there's no specific greek row connected with the school, but if you're into greek life, there are a lot of great options. i met a co-ed group that focused on community service that actually changed my mind about greek houses. while i haven't been interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, if you are, be ready to get some serious work done.
Campus Safety the campus has a special hotline available at late hours for people who need an escort to their apartments nearby. they've also been installing several emergency, blue light phones that are easy to access in case you need them. walking across campus doesn't take a long time and its relatively easy to find someplace safe.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are a lot of dedicated professors here that are passionate about the subject they teach. You can really see that they are here because they want to spread knowledge not just on their tenure for the money.
Am enjoying being here SFSU has the best of both worlds, a college-life experience but in a large bustling city. Lots of parties if you know where to look, plus the school has a monthly rave/club type event held in the student center. There is always something to do in the city and is only a bus ride away. There is amazing food options here, on campus and a close by. Everyone is positive with smiles and carefree and always willing to help.
Bang for the buck SFSU is a state school so it's cheaper in comparison to private schools. It's even cheaper than it's UC counterpart. However, cheaper doesn't mean less quality. The professors here are top notch and teach you as well or ever better than ones in other universities.
Tips for prospective students Don't move here with a car. It's so not worth it, parking fees, street cleaning tickets, gas and all that add up. You can bike or bus it anywhere for cheap, save the environment and your money.
Great for these types of students Come here if you want to go to a college in a big city.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Almost all my professors are there to make sure I am learning. Some of them stop occasionally during class time to ask if there are any questions and some give students time after class to clarify anything. I got to admit, the classes I took that have to do with studying other cultures are awesome because the professors I have had were really passionate about whatever they talk about.
Am enjoying being here I have met a lot of new friends coming to this school. Of course, it is a whole lot easier meeting people in a smaller class than a larger one. It's pretty easy to get from one building to another because there are a lot of paths. It's also easy to take the buses to different parts of the city.
Bang for the buck The tuition has been increasing, which of course isn't very appealing. Also, it's a lot harder to get classes nowadays so students need to use their early priority registration for classes wisely.
Tips for prospective students If you need help with any subject, make you sure talk to the professor, go to their office hours, or even get tutoring at school. People are there to help you so make sure you use it when you need it! Also consider joining an organization or program to meet people and be closer to the school community.
Great for these types of students Those who don't prefer a huge campus but like convenient transportation and don't mind the weather changing very often or even unexpectedly.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor class load and difficulty vary from teacher, class and your interest in learning the material. however, most teacher are friendly and try their best to open up their availability and encourage you to ask questions and visit them after class at their office hours.
Dorm Life you encounter many students living in the dorms in your same classes so it helps a lot to get to make a friend going through common experiences. there are many confusing things to learn your first and to go through it with others in your same position builds a sense of community. also, it makes it easier and more convenient to get help from another classmate outside of class.
Food and Dining on campus they have a subway and a convenient store that sells pizzas and sandwiches. if you go down 19th, off of irvine st. there are places to eat and there are good eateries on mission st. including a hole in the wall mexican food place and a liquor store that sells these sandwiches featured on an episode of anthony bourdain's show on the food network. there are many delicious hole in the wall places to eat, it just takes awhile to discover them.
What to do for fun san francisco is a metropolitan city so there are many things to do on a daily basis. there's museums, the zoo, downtown, parks, the pier, the wharf, the beach, union square, chinatown, castro, haight st., soma, plays, shows, and much more.
Bang for the buck san francisco is an expense place to live but there are many places where you can find good deals. chinatown is one of the places where you can find a lot of good deals on an assortment of things.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the campus is full of art pieces and sculptures scattered about in various places. also, every week there is a farmers market held on campus.
Great for these types of students this school is filled with a lot of open-minded students who self-express themselves. this school would be great for students who are or want to become more independent and open-minded in the way they think or express themselves.
Clubs and Activities there are many clubs and fraternities, sororities and such to join.
Campus Safety campus police are constantly circling around and inspecting campus for trouble and any types of dangers.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of the classes are very interesting, I guess it depends on what kind of professor you get. It's my freshman year so I don't have too much experience, but all professors I had so far are super nice and helpful.
Am enjoying being here San Francisco is a great city, and it isn't that far away. The campus is nice, although the dining center food could be better and more varied, but I guess you'll get bored of everything, eventually. There are plenty of other food options in Cesar Chavez Center and Stonestown Mall is a few steps away.
Bang for the buck Umm, I don't really know. The food seems expensive, and with the tuition hikes... yikes. I try not to think about that.
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus before you decide and get a feel for the city to make sure it's right for you. Get a Clipper Card for the Muni and set up automatic loading on-line, it saves you time and you're worry-free!
Great for these types of students If you like the city and are outgoing this is a place for you. Being a shy person, I can't say I made plenty of friends and I certainly don't join in with the people walking around drunk in the halls of Mary Park, but still I really enjoy the classes and San Francisco.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot It seems to be a healthy, open-minded environment, perfect for learning new things.
Will enjoy being here The fame of San Francisco has not escaped my hearing. I have heard plenty of positive feedback on this city.
Bang for the buck It's a metropolitan area, or so it seems, so there are bound to be opportunities that would be very attractive.
Tips for prospective students Make sure this is the place you want to go to, it doesn't seem to be for everyone, but I like it.
Great for these types of students For the more liberal minded students, this University will be suitable.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The academic aspect of this school has been very enjoyable. I've been able to take a variety of classes that I've learned so many new things from. The professors that I've come in contact with have been excellent. I had no problems with any of them. The workload was not overwhelming and I was able to gain knowledge while interacting with both the professors and fellow students.
Am enjoying being here The main thing I enjoy about this college is the campus. The campus is beautiful. Although it is not very large, the scenery makes up for it. Throughout the whole school a wide variety of trees, plants and flowers are arranged. All of this adds to the natural feeling of the school. It is as though you are walking through a forest rather than a college campus.
Bang for the buck For the price that students have to pay to attend this school, I'd say it is worth it. Having access to both rural and urban landscapes is definitely a bog plus. The school is extremely close to the beach and the city. Being able to get aroound so easily and having so many opportunities from the placement of this school has been a big reason why paying the price has not been as painful.
Tips for prospective students As bad as the housing provided my be, I would suggest living in the dorms for atleast the first year. I made the decision to live off-campus my first year and I regret it. I know that it would have been a lot easier for me to make friends and be more involved if I lived on campus.
Great for these types of students The school is very laid-back; so any students that are looking to study and learn in an easy-going and natural envorinment, this is the school for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have only been at State for a semester so far but i feel that I have learned a great deal of material. The teachers are passionate about their subjects and want to learn. Go to office hours if you don't understand things.
Am enjoying being here I'm originally from SoCal and like many people have said it does take some getting use to. The weather is very different up here lots of fog but not too much rain. You learn to layer clothes to keep warm. There's always stuff going on in the city. There's tons of public transportation and pretty cheap. After you get use to the weather its not to bad.
Bang for the buck San Francisco State prides itself at being one of the cheaper Cal States. The campus is beautiful and green but classes are kind of hard to get. Housing is a tad bit expensive.
Tips for prospective students Be aware of the weather! If you can find housing near campus do it living on campus is a tad bit expensive. Do not bring a car when you first move up there is no parking or it is expensive. Everyone takes public transportation its a lot cheaper and takes you all around town.
Great for these types of students People with open minds. There's tons of different people who live in San Francisco its so diverse. You're always learning new things.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I've only been here a semester, but I'm learning a lot. All the teachers I've had are committed to helping you learn something. But really, your education is what you make of it, so of course... go to class. :)
Am enjoying being here I think this school is great. SF is great to explore, especially while we're young. I wish this school were a little closer to everything but it's also nice that the campus is a piece of peace and quiet amongst a busy city.
Bang for the buck I think this school would be great for those who want the basics - an education. The dorms are expensive, so skip out and get a great apartment nearby for a lot less (not Parkmerced though). I just wish the campus had a little more LIFE in it - sports, greek life, and school spirit. And I also have to mention that it's really hard to get classes because of the budget, and I don't see this problem getting any better, but that's a problem every state student is facing.
Great for these types of students Bay area commuters, those who love SF, students who want to live in the city environment while going to school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Teachers are helpful, LOTS of resources available for students.
Bang for the buck You get a good education but classes can be very hard to get due to budget cuts. Its not a good deal. If you want to get out quick go to a private school, but if you want an experience come here.
Great for these types of students independent students, young students(as compared to people going back to scool), students looking for more than just a degree.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot The education at SFSU is very thorough and rigorous. I appreciated the input from all my professors. The campus itself is really well taken care of, although sometimes you have to run from class to class if they're across campus from each other.
Did enjoy being here I loved it
Tips for prospective students Ensure you are able to live in constant foggy and rainy conditions!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The professors are good and the classes are fun and engaging. The campus is beautiful and has so many ways to help the students. The area is extremely safe and in a great area.
Tips for prospective students Be on top of your classes and don't slack off. Do a lot of research on future classes you are going to take and talk to advisors and professors to get into the classes since they fill up very fast. Try to live on campus your first year to meet more students but make sure you apply early because housing fills up fast.
Academic Rigor Most classes are pretty easy, but this can also mess you up. A class may seem simple and before you know it you have a low grade, so keep up.
Dorm Life Its good to live on campus your first year in order to meet a lot of people. However, a lot of students aren't courteous to the fact you may be studying for a test and can be very loud. You share the bathroom with the whole floor so you don't have much privacy.
Food and Dining There are tons of options for food on campus. If you have a meal plan there is only 3 locations you can eat at and you may get sick of the food. However if your fine with using money, there are coffe shops and all types of meals.
What to do for fun In the school at the Cesar Chavez center there is a lounge with sofas, arcade games, pool tables, bars, and more. It's fun to go there and just hang out with your friends.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences San Francisco State offers a wide variety of classes with day, evening, night time and online classes. The students there are super friendly and there is always some sort of fun event you can attend or watch. I've only gone there for one semester and I love it already.
Tips for prospective students Come out to see the campus and experience what San Francisco State has to offer. You can really get a good feel for the school on the first visit.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging, but not overly difficult. If you prepare properly for your classes you will do fine.
Dorm Life I live off campus so I cannot rate the dorm life properly, but I hear it is fun.
Food and Dining I love the food and the wide variety of foods. S.F. State is s diverse that we have foods from all across the world. Plus there is a great pub on campus too.
What to do for fun You can attend one of the many events that go on weekly there from fundraisers to educational events about different cultures or about politics. There is a great pub and a wonderful cafeteria. Plus you are in San Francisco so there is always something fun to do every day.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I loved the campus and the atmosphere. Being from SoCal, I love the sun but could definitley get used to the weather. At the moment, this is my favorite option for school due to both environmental and academic aspects.
Tips for prospective students I want to apply to Apparel D&M, its impacted and you can't apply until sophomore year. Seems like there are a lot of impacted majors, not sure though...
Academic Rigor It seems like they have had some budget cuts, but that it hasn't affected the academics.
Dorm Life The dorms were nice but expensive (more than the actual tuition). They also have off-campus apartments. The a woman in the Student Outreach dept. told me that housing is hard to get and that you should apply really early because its first come first serve. I think I would meet some people in the dorms my freshman year and then move out, seems like a good way to save money.
Food and Dining I didn't get a chance to try the school food, but I saw the food court in the Cesar Chavez center. It seemed nice and vegetarian options (yay!). Dining in the city is phenomenal.
Bang for the buck Tuition is quite affordable, standard to most State U's I think. The housing is pretty expensive, but we are talking about San Francisco. Plus, if you want to study abroad, you still pay tuition to SFSU, not the foreign school, which is really cool.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences San Francisco State is a very cultured school with many opportunities. There are many different major options to explore with very knowledgeable teachers and interesting students as well.
Tips for prospective students Live in the dorms because it is a great experience, also when you are freshman you should immediately start looking into majors and figure out your four year graduation plan.
Academic Rigor All of the teachers I have had are extremmely fair and not too easy and not too hard.
Dorm Life Dorm life is extrememly laid back and awesome! The food is good, and the atmosphere is really fun.
Food and Dining Great food options, and a lot of health options, as well as a weekly farmers market.
What to do for fun Anything and Everything, its San Francisco, so every night there is either a concert, party, art show, movie, or festival going on in the city!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences SFSU is an awesome place with awesome people. The professors here are friendly, for the most part, well meaning. The one objection I have is classes being filled up.
Tips for prospective students For anyone intending to attend SFSU, I would say be very proactive in getting classes . Keep your name in the professors head, and good things happen.
Academic Rigor Not the most challenging courses for the most part. A lot of the time, it depends on the professor to determine the difficulty of the class.
Dorm Life I live off-campus, so I cannot speak of the living conditions, but from what i have seen, they are cramped.
Food and Dining The food here is good, so long as your getting food from the student center. The dorm food is mediocre at best.
What to do for fun There are a lot of extracurricular activities (sports, Greek life, shows, etc.), but for the most fun, just go out into the city and get lost for a little while.
Bang for the buck I have to give it a two because of recent fee hikes and class cuts.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The science building is weird. It was designed by three different architects who didn't share designs, so there are paths to nowhere, staircases that cut off, and toilets in classrooms. (I can vouch for the staircase, but the other points are from what I've heard)
Great for these types of students Really laid back students
Clubs and Activities I can't say because I am not a member of any clubs or activities, most of the stuff I do is with a group of friends.
Greek Life I know that there are quite a few frats and sororities catered to ethnic students, but I am not a member of any frat.
Campus Safety I have experienced no problems with security, other than a lost laptop which was promptly returned to me.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Good university with great professors. Very easy to get around. It offers many opportunities to join clubs and organizations to get to know people.
Tips for prospective students As long as you apply yourself and stay organized and on top of your work, you'll graduate in 4 years. Classes can be hard to come by, but teachers are willing to take more than their allowed to, just don't give up!
What to do for fun There's not a whole lot to do unless you've joined an organization. The greek community is small but fun. Public transportation gets you anywhere for pretty cheap. Giants games are a must!
Bang for the buck As long as you plan your time there wisely, you'll graduate on time with a pretty inexpensive but well-worth it education.
Clubs and Activities Lots of clubs - community service, culturally centered, gaming, health, etc. There are also quite a few greek organizations on campus.
Greek Life I enjoyed the greek life here. It was certainly worth my time and I met so many incredible people through it.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Campus is beautiful and a 45 minute muni ride to downtown SF. The Financial aid, housing, advising, and bursar offices are all extremely unhelpful. There's not a strong campus community feel.
Food and Dining In the Cesar Chavez building, most restaurants require a minimum purchase for cards or only accept cash. Market Pizza is good and cheap and has no minimum. There's a Subway.
What to do for fun Go downtown, to the beach, or to Golden Gate Park.
Bang for the buck There is no customer service. Every office sends you to another office and no one helps you.
Greek Life There's a small Greek Community. But no Greek housing.
Campus Safety Be careful with your cell phones.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences A place full of accepting people. I stuck out like a sore thimb in my hometown but here i never feel like an outsider. Offers really cool classes taught by intelligent professors that truly care about you and what they teach.
Tips for prospective students Make friends! Quickly!! Everyone already seems to have their own group and this school is a commuter school, everyone comes, goes to class, and then heads straight home. It's difficult to find people but don't be afraid to talk to them. I've yet to meet a jerk who won't talk to me. Everyone is seriously amazing, i think there's something in the water in Frisco. Also, get to know the campus. There is SO much in that place and most people dont know any of it exists because you end up taking the same route every day. This place is amazing, take advantage of your time here! TRY NOT TO PROCRASTINATE!! Im a hypocrite because thats all i do but god life would be so much easier if i didnt. Seriously, just do your work on time, you DO NOT have as much time to get to it as you initially thought.
Academic Rigor I'm only a freshman but im almost done and wow that was hard. You never realize until you leave high school and enter college how easy high school was. Take your biggest essay in hs and times it by 50 and you'll have college hw and the stress it puts on you. There's nothing to it but to do it and the good grade is definetly worth it in the long run.
Dorm Life Dont live in the dorms but i have been in friends dorms and i really dont like them. Theyre sooooo tiny. The Towers and the Village are bigger but i still dont like them. My friends have complained a lot about how the price they pay is not worth it. But you get to meet people in the dorms which is why i wanted to live there, and thats apparently worth it.
Food and Dining The foods pretty great just expensive. Im a vegetarian and im still yet to go to a place on campus and find that i cant get anything. Its pretty awesome, that doesnt happen often. If youre a vegetarian or vegan this is definetly the right school for you. They even have a Healthy store that sells a whole bunch of things ive never even heard of thats good for you and doesnt tastle like cardboard like you'd expect.
What to do for fun I typically just go home at the end of the day but there's a mall right next to campus i go to during breaks. Tip-- short cut to Stonestown, walk along the side next to Thornton Hall past the apartments and just cross the street and enter through the back of Nordstroms. SO much easier than walking to the front of the school and all the way across the school and the streets. Theres also a way through the annex but i have yet to figure out where that is... Theres also pool tables and an arcade at the bottom of the cesar chavez center. They screen movies frequently too, super cool ones that i never get to see but i would love to if i had the chance; like the Pearl Jam doc by Cameron Crowe.
Bang for the buck This is hard to say. It's effing expensive but i think that's just the way it is because of the times, no matter where you go. I love the school so i just deal with it. Classes are difficult to get sometimes but i think the good experiences outweigh the bad.
Great for these types of students Open-minded people that can handle wind and rain. Just bring a coat and umbrella and don't complain, everyone else knew!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I think I made a great choice when i decided to attend San Francisco State. I'm from southern California and it is such a different atmosphere than what I am used to. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming!
Tips for prospective students I would definitely say a new freshman student should live in the basic dorms because that's how you meet the most people. Apply for housing EARLY!
Academic Rigor The teachers are great for the most part, but this isn't really a competitive school to get into. You don't need the best grades in order to get accepted.
Dorm Life Dorm life is a great experience! I would recommend that every freshman gives living on campus a try. You meet so many new people and it's easier to get involved on campus!
Food and Dining Well, it was good for the first few weeks but it gets old FAST! There is the dining center, burrito place and pizza place. It seems like a wide variety, but it definitely isn't when you are forced to eat it everyday.
What to do for fun It's San Francisco so there is a lot to do for fun! The muni stop is right next to the school and it is about a 20 minute muni ride into the city. We are also not too far from the beach, but it's pretty cold.
Bang for the buck I think the campus housing is a bit expensive, but maybe that's just because I don't have a lot of money. Tuition is high but I think it's like that for every college.
Great for these types of students Laid back, chill, friendly, carefree
Greek Life It's not really too big on campus. We don't have houses or whatever they are called, but we do have some frats and sororities.
Campus Safety I think it's pretty safe. There are always campus police cars driving around and they stay on campus late at night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences San Francisco State has excellent professors and you will get a good education based on what you put into it. However, be aware of the over crowding and the budget cuts. The school is a good training ground before you go into the work force.
Tips for prospective students Put in a lot of time and effort into your studies because that's when you will get the most out of your education and actually profit from the experience. Get good grades and apply for scholarships, because that will help you get into graduate school and get internships over the summer. If you are a science major, try to join a lab as well with a good advisor.
Academic Rigor San Francisco State can be very competitive at times. As long as you study earnestly and effectively, you will get good grades. The professors definitely set high standards for the upper division courses. For the general education courses, however, such as critical thinking and communication, they have lower standards.
Food and Dining The university has some cheap food in the Ceazar Chavez center. They don't accept credit cards a lot of the time, so bring cash.
What to do for fun Down town San Francisco is very close to the school. You can get there by muni. The school also has an underground pub which is also nice.
Bang for the buck It has a pretty good bang for the buck, considering that UCs are much more expensive. However, be prepared to be seen as anonymous unless you go to office hours to get to know your professors. Otherwise it might not seem like it's worth it. You need to put in time to study on your own.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is an underground pun.
Great for these types of students The independent thinkers and hard workers.
Clubs and Activities There are many Greek organizations and ethnic groups.
Greek Life There are many fraternities and sororities to choose from.
Campus Safety Very good campus safety.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The majority of the Science instructors are very knowledgeable and provide good instruction. The campus is extremely diverse, which exposes the students to nearly every aspect of every community on Earth. Yearly-increasing tuition and a 3-story library that to took 7 years to retrofit show that California does not place education among its list of priorities.
Tips for prospective students Choose a major that's relevant towards the job market. Study as though your life depended on it. Associate with others who are mature and focussed.
Academic Rigor The classes for Cell and molecular Biology were quite rigorous, but do-able, if one is focussed. It is highly recommended to study in groups.
Dorm Life Typical dorm life, in between serious and party.
Food and Dining San Francisco is known for having some of the world's best dining across multiple cuisines. The dining are at SFSU was quite terrible, especially considering how great food is throughout San Francisco.
What to do for fun You can do almost anything for fun in San Francisco.
Bang for the buck SFSU is the best choice for education considering the cost, but that's really only because every other 4-year college costs thousands more.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Sometimes the protests and demonstrations interfere with classroom learning or post-lecture studying.
Great for these types of students Whoever can't afford anything better.
Clubs and Activities Clubs and organizations were seldom well-organized, and that's putting it kindly.
Greek Life Didn't notice much of it.
Campus Safety Campus lighting and security could be better, but it also could be worse.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This is a great school, with a lot of cultural diversity in terms of the students that attend here, as well as the staff. The campus is beautiful and very green. It's also quite exciting living in the city where there is so much to do, so nearby!
Tips for prospective students Join clubs to get involved and meet new people.
Academic Rigor Classes can be challenging, but overall it's not difficult to do well. Just study and don't let yourself become too distracted, too often, with non-academic things such as partying, social activities, etc.
Dorm Life It's not bad too considering that you'll only be living here for a short time and that it's convenient. However, some of the dorms are not the newest or cleanest buildings you'll ever see.
Food and Dining The dining places on campus are reasonably priced for the most part, and they are pretty good. The dining center for the students living on campus does not seem too healthy though, and there aren't a ton of choices.
What to do for fun There are always activities happening on campus, and there are tons of things to do in San Francisco, just a short bus ride away! Night life, museums, tourist spots, shopping, the beach, exploring the city, and more!

Academic Rigor the courses at the school are fun yet challenging.

Am enjoying being here The staff is very friendly and informative. The campus is gorgeous!
Bang for the buck Although the tuition is high for out-of-state residents, it seems like it is affordable to residents of CA. I really appreciate that they put comparative prices on the bookstore website from third-party sellers like Amazon. It's useful and it makes the university appear compassionate for the high costs of school.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to attend orientation on the date you signed up! You won't be able to sign up early for 2 classes otherwise.
Great for these types of students Great if you're looking for the Bay Area attitude in a school. :)

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I just signed up for my classes for the Fall so I certainly hope to learn a lot.
Will enjoy being here I know I will because I love the city and am anxious to move out of my home.
Bang for the buck It is certainly less expensive than the universities.
Tips for prospective students Sign up for the dorms before January of the year you are planning on attending.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I like the information given within the ethnic studies department and for my major the classes are definitely interesting. Being a Kinesiology major is difficult, but rewarding
Am enjoying being here My issue about this school is the effect the budget cuts have the amount of classes available. Classes have become scarce especially for upper classmen.
Bang for the buck I think its a little too expensive for a commuter school. Honestly, they try to suck you dry with the crazy amount of fees, and barely any parking.
Tips for prospective students Mix it up newbies. Be really sure of your major and make sure to get the classes you need for grad school out of the way if you plan on going. They may not necessarily be with you major.
Great for these types of students This school is great for ethnic studies students because of the culture and history attatched to the school.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Each one of my teachers seem like the thourougly enjoy their jobs and what they are teaching you. This has made it a lot easier for me to learn in my first year of college
Am enjoying being here San Francisco in general is a great place to live. The fact that you are literally in a melting pot of people everyday in and out of the classroom makes attending a definite A+ in my book.
Bang for the buck Though the atmosphere is great on campus food and housing isn't something to admire. You definitely get tired of eating pizza, burritos and salads when thats all you can use for your meal plan. Educational wise it is more than bang for your buck.
Tips for prospective students Listen to your professors! Going here you have the privilege of being surrounded by professors who got their degrees from Harvard, Yale, etc. 3/4th have even written the textbooks you will be using in class, so pay attention.
Great for these types of students Come in open minded and you will leave with a new culture everyday
