    Am learning a lot

The reputation of junior colleges is that the level of education is not very high. For some junior colleges, that may be true, but the quality of classes at Santa Monica College is exceptional. That's why it's rated one of the best junior colleges in the nation. At any college, there are bound to be classes that aren't for you. Talking to a counselor and websites that give student-written reviews can be really helpful. However, with proper research, you're sure to find university-level classes at Santa Monica that challenge you and really work with you.

    Am enjoying being here

SMC has what a lot of colleges lack, and that's a positive energy. Maybe it's the welcoming environment, the helpful staff, the great location, or the beautiful campus, but there isn't one person I've met who doesn't like SMC. In just the short amount of time that I have attended SMC (Santa Monica College), I've truly made so many great memories and friends. Plus, this school makes it really easy for you to organize and get started on the path to achieving your life goals. What's not to love about that?

    Bang for the buck

Starting Santa Monica College as an out-of-state student, I had to pay a lot more than a California resident. But even though my tuition is higher than other students, I'm still receiving a great deal. The quality of the school is great, and some teachers at universities even teach at SMC in their spare time. You're basically taking the same classes as the ones given at the nearby universities, but paying a lot less for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your research, and be prepared. Because Santa Monica College is a Junior College, many students enroll with the idea that it will be easy, and they slack off. Some people think that transferring to a university from a junior college is easier than trying to get in straight from high school, but in reality, it's more difficult. The truth is that transfer students face a lot of competition, and when it comes time to admit transfer students, good universities only want the best of the best. They want to know that the students they're admitting are as smart and responsible as, if not, more than, the students they've already admitted. The way to really excel in Santa Monica College is to treat it like it is a regular, serious, four-year university. Do well in your classes, and make friends with your teachers. That way, you'll obtain great references and really impress universities by showing them that you're ready and willing to handle more responsibility.

Great for these types of students

The great thing about Santa Monica College is that it's so diverse. It really caters to a variety of different needs. Whether it be a just-out-of-high school student hoping to transfer, or a professional simply looking to expand their horizons, Santa Monica College has something for everyone.

    Am learning a lot

Santa Monica College is a very good school where learning is easy and fun. The teachers are very good and they are willing to help you when you need it. There is plenty of help and one-on-one counseling. I really am learning a lot of what is expected from me and that there really is no reason for missing out work and failing because, your work is given to you on a syllabus at the beginning of class. I am really learning that as long as i put dedication to studying and in-class assignments, the classes can be very smooth and easy.

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying being at Santa Monica because It really is a very good school. there is a lot of interaction and campus events going on. It is a very quiet and helpful environment where one can study outdoors without disruptions and if preferred indoors where staff will make sure that you have a quiet place to study. The campus consists of a many computer labs and a big library with a variety of books for research.

    Bang for the buck

To pay for school doesn't have to cost you an eye outta your face. Classes are very cheap at only $26 and tuition is not going to hit you in the face. Taking at least two years at Santa Monica College will save you a lot of money as for you wont have to pay thousands like in 4 year universities. Although, there is plenty of financial aid available for students that qualify for it. This will make it easier for you and wont have to spend your money on books witch do cost a lot. By the way you do not have to buy the books straight from the student book store as you can buy books from your fellow students and classmates. You can also sell your books back to the book store or to other students that need it.

    Tips for prospective students

A very good tip for prospective students would be to not give up half way when things are looking bad. That you should not give in to pressure because where there is a will there is a way. Having good grades and maintaining them is not very hard because there is a lot of help available for you. The most important thing that you have to remember is that you should learn how to manage your time. If you do not know how to manage your time, getting things done will be very difficult. Things will get clamped together and you will miss out assignments, tests and important events. You can avoid all of these things if you are able to manage your time and student planners are a vary good way to do so. Also, a very good tip would be to visit a counselor at least twice per semester as this will help you keep in track with your goals.

Great for these types of students

Santa Monica College is a great school for all types of students. Race, religion or age will not affect you in any way. SMC is has a good environment for all types of students regardless of who you are. What matters is that you are willing to sacrifice your time to get a good education to have a brighter future. Having a variety of students is very good because you learn more about other races and that there are many people out there who think and are just like you. SMC has a variety of programs and services that will help you out, give you benefits and make school be a lot easier.

You may get lost in the shuffle of determined students and lazy students, so you have to pick a side the moment you step on campus. The beautiful sea side community offers everything you need to transfer to a good four-year university. Now if only we could get more classes, more of us could get to where we want to go.

    Tips for prospective students

Visualize yourself achieving your goals and dreams and anything is possible. Be the early bird, and be outspoken. Nothing will be handed to you here, and you have to fight hard for what you need.

    What to do for fun

The beach! What can be more beautiful than a campus five minutes away from the Pacific ocean?

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The bagel pizza place in front of main campus is the best!

    Did learn a lot

From Santa Monica College (SMC), a student can learn many things: academically and socially. I didn't expect much out of this junior college, but the education level at SMC proved to be good enough to earn the outstanding reputation it has. The math and science courses at SMC are not easy and truly prepares students for harder level courses at UCLA or Berkeley. Also, as an out of state student, I did not expect to make lots of friends, but there are many clubs on campus to get you involved and learn many things from the students and teachers. The professors here are from other great schools in the area like UCLA and USC, so I am positive the students will learn a lot and have a great network to be connected to the neighborhood and even the world!

    Did enjoy being here

I loved being at SMC. It was a great experience and I wish that I didn't have to leave. This school helped me to get into UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UC Berkeley. It was a great stepping stone to prepare me for upper level classwork at UCLA. This school has a lot to offer to the students. I know many people are sad to leave the school because SMC became another home away from home. The many sponsored events and seminars on campus help build up school spirit and passion to learn and succeed in life. The only regret I had with spending time at SMC is not using the short time to to take advantage of all the things the school had to offer.

    Bang for the buck

The only problem I had with the financial part of this school is that I was an out of state student and it was hard for me to be classified as instate. The out of state tuition is about ten times more than the instate price so I did not think that it was fair. Although, if I were an instate student, I think this is the best deal for a junior college because of the great education at a good price. Even though it was more expensive for me, I still think that SMC has the value to be worth the out of state tuition. Another negative is that the Santa Monica/ West LA area is expensive in general. Therefore, the living expenses to go to this school is not fair.

    Tips for prospective students

Before prospective students go to SMC, I suggest that you make a clear plan to take as many units as you can while at SMC. Also, I suggest enrolling in classes as soon as you can because the classes fill up quickly. Finally, study hard and take in as much information and life experience as you can while you are a student here.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who are instate residence because you are getting a GREAT education while saving thousands of dollars. Also great for students who want a second chance at getting into top universities in the country. I know many people who came to SMC with a bad high school record and got into USC, Berkeley, UCLA, Columbia, NYU, ect. This school can be your hope for a better future!

    Am learning a lot

I think based on your major this college really does provide a lot. Santa Monica College is especially great for international students. They give a sufficient amount of homework which really helps students prepare for transferring to universities. Santa Monica College also has the highest transfer rate to UCLA. The only problem is that sometimes they are tough with their schoolwork but that is because so students don't slack off, because in colleges students have that tendency to do so.

    Am enjoying being here

Santa Monica College has a very welcoming environment and because there students from all over the world you are always learning something new. There are a variety of clubs and organizations that help you become more involved in the school. The teachers and counselors are also great. I think because they have experience with so many different cultures and situations they take every student as a individual, and not generalize them.

    Bang for the buck

Personally because I am not an international student I think the prices are great. Although recently because of the budget cuts the prices have increased dramatically I still believe its reasonable. For international students I cannot say the same thing. Santa Monica College is a really expensive school for internationals. They pay more than 3,000 dollars.

    Tips for prospective students

I say if you are not ready for a 4-year university than you should definitely consider Santa Monica College. Also, it has the highest transfer rate to UC's One thing I would give advice on is that you should definitely speak with a counselor before starting because you don't want to be stuck at SMC forever.

Great for these types of students

Santa Monica College is great for all kinds of students and international students who are willing to pay some money for their education. It is also great for adults who work because there are night time classes and even weekend classes.

Every school has its pros and cons, especially when it comes to the faculty. Fortunately most of the professors at SMC are top notch, many have taught and still teach at great schools such as UCLA. I recently took a business course and it put me at ease with choosing to be a busness major. My professor gave interesting lectures as well as memorable ones. Many students from junior colleges fear that once they transfer to a university the coursework will be alot harder, but based on myexperience, I don't think the transition will be impossible.

    Am enjoying being here

I do get to see many of my high school friends, but sometimes I wish I could meet more new people. Of course this is something that one has to take upon themselves to accomplish. It was easier in high school to talk to people in class, but not so much in college. Once you are in class you have to be prepared to listen to the tecaher speak non stop through the entire period, there isnt much time to socialize. If you get to do group projects, then you have a chance to make new friends, or if you join a club. There are diverse people all throughout the campus, you meet people from all ages and from different countries as well. You just have to take the initiative if you really want to meet new people.

    Bang for the buck

I get financial aid, but I still have to pay for my books, which tend to be worth an arm and a leg. Still, I believe that SMC is one of the best junior colleges in Southern California. The location is amazing, who doesnt like an ocean breeze?, the facility is overall maintained well, many teachers leave a great lasting impression, and the school boasts about being #1 in transfers to UCLA. This definitley is a great school to choose to attend if planning on transferring.

    Tips for prospective students

I made sure to lookup my professors on ratemyprofessors.com before deciding to stick with the particular professor I chose. Of course everyone has to take it upon themselves to get a good grade, but you still need to make sure you have a professor who is willing to help you when you ask for it and who genuinely loves teaching.

Great for these types of students

Independent, self-motivator, struggling financially, students looking to transfer to a university.

    Am learning a lot

At Santa Monica College, one not only learns about the black and white topics of a syllabus, but also the principle behind those standards and the ways to apply those topics to ones life; For example While taking an English class, the topic of public advertisements came up after a deep dissection about the finesse of Ads, many walked away with the lesson that there is a meaningful message behind a flashy picture.

    Am enjoying being here

While being a freshman, I joined the Black Collegians program which not only helped me academically by enrolling me in top of the notch courses but also emotionally by assigning me to a compassionate, and caring mentor to advise me through my college years; something of which i deeply appreciate.

    Bang for the buck

the textbooks are pricey, but when utilized and actually read, one would realize the substance within their bindings. The BOG fee waiver, which pays for tuition was easily obtainable for me, and for others the $20-30 price per unit doesn't seem too bad when compared to other UC's or private colleges.

    Tips for prospective students

prospective students need to stay informed about the college workshops and in contact with a counselor. these are pivotal tools for survival. study groups and the occasional all-nighter are worth it, discipline and determination will be tested, so support from friends and family is also a necessity.

Great for these types of students

Santa Monica College is an appropriate fit for people who have busy lifestyles, a tight budget, or are new to the college atmosphere. it is a school where mistakes wont dig you into a deep hole you cant crawl out of, almost like college with training wheels.

Very high transfer rate to 4 year programs. Currently, the staff and student support is at a minimum due to overpopulation of the student services. Preview and carefully select your professors/classes on ratemyprofessors dot com because some professors here should not be teaching at all.

    Tips for prospective students

Veterans get preferred and early access to sign up for classes, so it definitely helps to be a veteran.

    Academic Rigor

Choose your classes carefully and you can get a quality education at SMC. On the other hand, it seems pretty easy for some students to skate through without taking their education seriously. You get what you put into it at SMC.

    Food and Dining

Food court is okay. Limited and repetitive menu.

    What to do for fun

    Get off campus.

    Bang for the buck

Although a community college, SMC is a pretty decent education for the $46/unit price. One year ago it was only $26/unit, so get it while the gettin's good.

Great for these types of students

Veterans who are serious about getting their education for a minimal price.

    Clubs and Activities

Santa Monica College is a very populated school, and for good reason. Dedicated and helpful staff support and aid the student population despite of never ending budget cuts and higher than ever enrollment rates. This beautiful campus provides accessible and high quality professors giving each one of their students the tools needed to excel.

    Tips for prospective students

Research and Organize. Exhaust all the options and resources available to you but don't get overwhelmed. Your school's financial aid and counseling departments are there to help you stay the course. Stay dedicated and remind yourself of your achievements to keep you motivated.

    Academic Rigor

Santa Monica College offers many different kinds of courses and teaching styles. This includes 'scholars classes' for the particularly rigorous but there are many courses that will help the inexperienced ascend to new academic heights.

    Dorm Life

One of the benefits to Santa Monica is that there are a lot of apartments close to campus and many buildings with mostly Santa Monica College students. You also have the option of settling anywhere in Los Angeles. I come from East LA to take classes at Santa Monica College and I love it!

    Food and Dining

The main campus has a fantastic cafeteria. As a vegetarian and a stickler for natural foods I expect to be disappointed but there are so many deliciously inexpensive and healthy options! Of course there's also several coffee shop spots to go to to get my daily treat.

    What to do for fun

Santa Monica is such a wonderful setting for this open learning environment. With tons of shopping and all kind of dining, and not to mention the beaches of Santa Monica, there is never a dull moment.

    Bang for the buck

At Santa Monica College you get the same quality education as the four year you'll be transferring to. Between financial aid, their helpful workshops, and my fantastic professors, I know I'm getting my money's worth.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a small closed off area behind the theater building that is just enough in the middle of everything and just secluded enough to take your lunch and some homework.

Great for these types of students

Independent students looking for the normal college setting but with more options.

    Clubs and Activities

There is always something going around on campus. I work in addition to going to school so I'm not always able to attend, but I love going to their live performances and the weekly happenings in the quad.

    Greek Life

I was happy and interested to find out that Santa Monica does have Fraternities and Sororities. Those kinds of college bonds can be invaluable in life and it's something people often think they'll miss out on by attending a community college.

    Campus Safety

I feel very safe on campus! Security is easily accessible, friendly around campus, and I always know that they'll be there if I need them.

I would rate Santa Monica College an 8/10. It is a wonderful campus, with ambitious students and helpful faculty. This is a good environment where you can really take advantage of your time to learn about yourself and discover what you truly want to be.

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise you to get a parking permit because the meters surrounding the school are usually filled. Also, visit professors at office hours because they are there to help you and it is a wonderful opportunity to make connections while you are at a smaller campus compared to a university.

    Academic Rigor

I believe it offers a good college environment with faculty that are excited in teaching and guiding students toward their individual goals. Plus, SMC has the number 1 UC transfer rate.
There is a program called the Scholars Program that requires students to write an essay and meet the minimum GPA requirement to join. It offers selected classes only for Scholars students and has a competitive atmosphere, where all the students that have joined want to transfer to a 4-year university. I am in this program and I have met so many enthusiastic and hardworking people, it is a very good atmosphere to be in if you are determined to transfer to a university. Also, SMC has a UCLA Outreach program where you can take actual classes at UCLA while you are still a student at SMC. The college offers many pathways that does not confine you but rather gives you an open canvas for you to paint your own goals and aspirations.

    Dorm Life

Santa Monica College only offers dorms for out of state and international students, I am a resident here so I can not give you the best advice or description of the dorms.

    Food and Dining

There is a small cafe and a cafeteria located within the school. I have never eaten there but as a spectator, it seems to be crowded and I assume it is a good place to eat. There are also numerous cafes and restaurants around the area that I absolutely love, Daisy Cafe, is one of them, and it is right by Santa Monica College.

    What to do for fun

SMC is at the heart of the city and is right by the beautiful 3rd Street Promenade as well as the beach. After a long class or an exam, there are many places to go so you can take a break from your busy college life.

    Clubs and Activities

There are numerous clubs that you can join! Clubs are wonderful outlets in meeting people that are similar and share the same interests as you.

    Tips for prospective students

    Academic Rigor

The standards are definitely up there; I'd choose 5 stars if it weren't for the helpful teachers and labs/tutoring centers that help you achieve success!

    Dorm Life

    Food and Dining

Eat St., two Starbucks, one Peet's at the Campus Cafeteria are great. Really health-conscious options as well as vegetarian/vegan options if those interest you.

Santa Monica College is the best place to be if your goal is transferring. The biggest plus for this school is how close it is to the beach. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest that you go to a counselor in the welcome center and then after you are in enrolled, go to the counselors within the counseling center. If one counselor you see is not the right one for you, don't give up, just make an appointment to see another. Most importantly research this college to see if it is the right one for you.

    Academic Rigor

Passing classes are easy if you stay focused and get all the help that is offered. Free tutoring is offered in almost every subject that is taught here at Santa Monica College.

    Food and Dining

SMC has a great selection of food on campus. There are lots of healthy choices. The best deal for your budget would be at Abbot's Pizza Company on Pico across the street from the college. They are always offering student deals for delicious meals.

    What to do for fun

I love going to the beach in between classes on sunny days. I set my class schedule so that I have time to squeeze in a trip or five(lol) to the beach. I also enjoy club row in the Spring and Fall. I have gotten free food for solving math problems.

    Bang for the buck

The biggest bang for your buck is the Associates Students Sticker which is only $19.50. It gives you access to free rides on every big blue bus, cheap movie tickets, and more. Even though books are expensive at school but SMC has the option of selling back your books for almost half of what you paid for it. Students are always looking to sell books for way cheaper than what the book store sells it for.

Great for these types of students

Santa Monica is a school for every type of student.

    Clubs and Activities

The best clubs are here at SMC. They all get together to promote their club at an event called Club Row. Best event ever! All i can say is free food and lots of fun!

The academics are I find different than any school, every year there is a theme the English department focuses on so that all the students (international as well) can relate to & understand each other on

    Dorm Life

Santa Monica College is a junior college, we do not have any dorms but, the school does specialize in helping student find roommates.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria on campus is the biggest, there are too many options to choose from inside or where you want to eat, we have seven restaurant stations to buy food, but the food tend to be a bit pricey.

Santa Monica College is a great college that enables a smooth transition from high school or trade school to a traditional four year institution. The classes are charismatic yet challenging, and the instructors are always understanding and pushes students to their maximum potential. Santa Monica College is the leading community college in California for a reason, and I'm proud to be a student.

    Tips for prospective students

For incoming students, my biggest tip would be just put maximal effort into what ever courses they are taking and stay focused. The instructors understand that everyone isn't an aerospace engineer or biochemist, they just want to see effort being put into their class and office hours are the most beneficial periods for any students; any comments, questions, or just a little chit chat can be discussed during office hours. The second big one is stay focused, definitely for new high school graduates. Although, Santa Monica College makes the transition from high school to college smooth at time it does feel like a high school environment, but that doesn't mean you can pass a class without doing homework, miss lectures and labs, or pass an exam without rigorous studying. So to ensure your success apply the most amount of effort to the best of your ability in the allotted time you have.

    Academic Rigor

This is where Santa Monica excels, as aforementioned Santa Monica College is the best available bridge from high school to a four year institution. The class structures are intended for you to be proactive and do outside research and readings and come to class prepared to respond and ask questions. The golden rule in college and higher education in general is: for every hour in class, one must spend double that outside class studying. SMC explores this rule and makes it even more challenging but rewarding when you get an A on your transcript.

    Dorm Life

There isn't really official dorms for the school, but there are local student housing units around the area. If you are a fortunate student to get in one of these units, I can imagine the endless possibilities it entails; you're right near the beach, 24 Hour Fitness is located right off Ocean Park, and you can get to school without worrying about a parking spot; that has got to be the life.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining at SMC is subpar and very pricey. However, it is convenient when studying long hours or don't have time to go your favorite restaurant. Campus Kitchen offers a huge variety of entrees to choose from, from asian cuisine to south american dishes every dish can satisfy any student. If you aren't a cafeteria type of person SMC is in the center of every type of restaurant or fast food chains. For the burger lovers Burger King and Foster Freeze is located across the street, and for my pizza fans Pizza Hut and a small mom and pops dinery is also located walking distances. Whatever the taste, SMC has it or a short distance away from it.

    What to do for fun

The best thing about being by the beach is there is limitless amounts of fun for all students. Jazz clubs, the pier, great eateries, book clubs, run clubs, movie theatre, and more can all be found at The Third Street Promenade. With your SMC ID the five minute bus trip is free and definitely worth it. It has attractions for all ages and promotes an atmosphere of family fun. And if you're ever near the school on saturdays , during the fall semesters SMC hosts men's football at Corsair Stadium which is always a great way to show school spirit.

Great for these types of students

Santa Monica College is so diversed and multicultural there isn't a type of student it is equally great for any student. Evidence of this is the many international students who transfer there yearly, as well as the local kids coming from Santa Monica High School and Venice High School. The opportunity to meet someone from a different background here is endless and it also help students see the cultural differences and traditions of other races and ethnicities.

The classmates that I am surrounded by are an important factor, as well, when considering my overall happiness at school; they are generally great team players and help make learning fun!

    Tips for prospective students

Stay well-informed on current requirements in the fields you are most interested in. Always keep your eye out for new, diverse opportunities; be willing to explore!

    Academic Rigor

The professors will push you toward excellence, helping you tremendously, to grow as a student, but they don't tolerate those who create distraction, which draws crucial attention and energy that could otherwise be utilized by another student who shows that they are there to achieve.

    Dorm Life

    I live off-campus, but I hear it's splendid!

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of vending machines spread around the campus with some healthier options, in addition to the typical selections. What to do for fun

Go to a football game, see a lecture, or visit the Broadstage!

    Bang for the buck

I have not been to many other campuses, but Santa Monica College does seem to be top-notch. SMC has gorgeous landscaping throughout, fountains, state-of-the-art sports facilities, and a successful theater. The massive library, architecturally and administratively, seems to promote a healthy study habit among all students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

SMC's campus has an extensive recycling and earth-friendly policy which seems to affect students' personal habits on campus and away from school.

Great for these types of students

California relaxed lifestyle, hanging out with people who tend to have a sunny disposition, BUT willing to put forth a strong dedication to studies.

    Clubs and Activities

There is an incredible range of activities to suit the interests of any student, visitor, and/or staff member.

    Greek Life

Greek life does not seem to be a strong cultural influence at Santa Monica College, in my experience so far.

    Campus Safety

I have never once felt unsafe, or threatened in any way.

santa monica college, in my opinion, is a wonderful place to get started. the campus is very large and the school has a large variety of classes that you can take in order to get a head start in your career planning. whether you want to major in medicine, creative writing, or cosmetology it is a good place to start.

    Tips for prospective students

if you know exactly what you what to major in i suggest that you find a school that fits that major however if you are not sure of your major just yet attend college like santa monica and find it there. it is far more difficult to start studying again once you have stopped.

    Academic Rigor

one thing that sets college apart from high school or middle school, is that the main thing pushing you through the classes is yourself. santa monica is there to help but also do not play the role of a parent in other words they are not going to check you homework or make sure you pay things on time.

    Dorm Life

you really don't have to dorm. it is a matter of personal choice. if you live far staying in a dorm seems like the way to go. but if you live close staying home seems like a good way to save money.

    Food and Dining

most college students have to learn to use money wisely due to the expensive books and tuition. try to limit the amount of times that you eat out, pack lunch, and prepare meals or eat at home.. its free.

    What to do for fun

studying all the time does wear you out so take a day to relax and have fun. take a class like dance or drawing thats fun for you and get your mind off studying for a while.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there is a burger joint right around the corner of a bus stop on the way home that we used to stop by every friday. the burgers and fries are stacked up high and the price is right, it is exactly what every college student looks for. and its a fun place to hang out with friends.

    Clubs and Activities

santa monica has tons of clubs you can join. clubs and activities are a good way to get far. people want to see that you were and what you were involved when looking to hire you.

    Campus Safety

every campus is not a safe as we would like. if your going to stay late make sure you tell someone or have someone on the phone as you walk to your car or have someone walk with you.

smc is an amazing place to get your started with college. with increasing budget cuts this is one of the few community colleges that is making a strong effort keep classes strong. the faculty is great and there are a number of them that have resources you can tap into that you wouldn't expect on the community college level---so use them!

    Tips for prospective students

try to enroll into any special programs there to get a priority enrollment (e.g. scholars, black collegians, adelante, etc.) --there is bound to be one that will fit your interest/needs, plus they have invaluable resources that will put you on the right track.

    Academic Rigor

i gave this a 4 because of the level that you can eventually get to at smc. the more liberal arts can range from 2-3, but the maths and sciences courses here are known for being up to par university level so stay on your game.

-determined but aren't necessarily clear on what they want to major in
    -returning students
    -anyone really!

    Tips for prospective students

Classes fill up very soon. Sooner you add, the better

Don't completely depend on the counselors on
    1. Completing requirements for a specific university.
Solution - Contact your major's Dept. of the University you are transferring to, to get 'all' the information you need or there's about a 50% chance you could be wasting 1 or 2 more semesters in SMC.

    2. Don't expect the counselors to know anything specific about your major except for what is at www.assist.org and www.csumentor.org/com
Partial solution - Contact an appropriate professor. Partial because I got most helpful information off the internet's reliable sources than what I got from a couple of professors. Now don't get the wrong idea. Most of the Professors I've had are top-notch. But they might not be up-to-date.

e.g: I want to be a computer hardware engineer. So I kept looking at monster.com and craigslist.org for job listings. Many of the positions mainly required that i know Verilog. I asked a couple of my professors and they did not know what it was. From internet I learned that it is an HDL (Hardware Descriptive Language) and that SMC does not offer it but many universities in my hit-list do.

Moral of the story- Do your own research about what you want and how to get it!

    Dorm Life
