Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Southern Connecticut State University offers a vast amount of courses dealing with culture, liberal arts and offers several majors and masters programs. For example the study abroad program is an amazing opportunity that students can experience.
Am enjoying being here I love attending Southern. The campus is beautiful, the classes and staff are interesting, and the students who attend Southern enjoy being there and have a desire to learn.
Bang for the buck In comparison to other colleges, students will recieve a wonderful education for a decent price. Southern offers several classes and programs for just about everyone
Tips for prospective students Students should take advantage of all that Southern has to offer such as different courses, sports, clubs, job opportunities on campus, and the helpful staff. In addition, students should get involved as early as possible and find an advisor that will help them navigate throughout their years at Southern
Great for these types of students Those people who wish to become educators, nurses, and any major for that matter should become active as early as possible attending club meeting and taking courses in their field, therefore they will be able to apply to those programs and be accepted early

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I've learned more in a year and a half here at Southern than I did all throughout high school. If you choose the right professors learning is fun as well!
Am enjoying being here I live on campus and love it so much! Southern is a perfect match for me and I could never imagine going anywhere else.
Bang for the buck Out of the four state schools, I'd have to say in my opinion Southern has the most to offer. The campus is the nicest and the activites are so often that you always see your money at use.
Tips for prospective students When choosing schools make sure it has everything that you're looking for. Southern offers almost every major possible. There's nothing here at Southern I don't enjoy.
Great for these types of students Students from small towns looking for a change!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are a wide variety of classes to take with a large spectrum of subjects. Also, the faculty is very helpful and for the most part truly cares about his or her students education.
Am enjoying being here The school has a nice, up-to-date campus that is aesthetically pleasing. Also, the dorms are not very far from the center of campus. One thing that Southern lacks is a large population of students on the weekends. For the most part, students go home on the weekends or just commute to school. Southern has tried to stop this by disallowing freshman students parking passes so they have no choice to stay which is good for most freshman.
Bang for the buck If you live in Connecticut, Southern is one of the best schools for the money. Out of state students do pay quite a bit more so I am sure there are better options from a out-of-state student if they are looking for a cheap state school.
Tips for prospective students If you have interest in this school, make sure you come to a campus open house so you can check out everything to really get a feel. Also, if you are looking for a good education and not as much worried with the social aspects than this is the best school for your money. Check out the college's website for their sports and clubs and see which one you would enjoy as this is the best way to guarantee a strong social relationship with other students living on campus.
Great for these types of students Most students can find this school beneficial because they have many programs and majors. Also, they have many sports and clubs which are available to most students.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot The professors are good. You could probably enjoy being with them.
Will enjoy being here This is probably the college that you will have the most fun at. The environment is okay, but there are so many things that you could do. Football, hokey, and basketball are one of the many sports offered on campus. It is sometimes noisy though.
Bang for the buck The price will be good if you have in in-state tuition. That will be no problem. However, the out of state tuition is very pricey.
Great for these types of students -positive people
-willing to learn

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Southern is a school that offers lots of help as needed for any student. Many teachers are available through email and some offer extra help sessions that are very helpful. Learning can be done on your own but it is very helpful to have staff available if need be.
Am enjoying being here I think that it is a well respected school and I think that is a good school. I enjoy some of it but it was not my first choice school. It is a good second choice though.
Bang for the buck The cost is pretty low for a college. Scholarships would be helpful paying as well. It is even more inexpensive when living off campus as I am.
Tips for prospective students Future students I encourage you to visit schools and then try to choose the right school. Southern is a good school and good for commuters.
Great for these types of students It is great for students wanting to get a degree and still live life.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The professors here are amazing people. Southern is affordable, and do not be afraid to settle for it. However, do not be shy to consider going to a different school if you have been accepted to a school that offers a higher quality education or has a more inclusive array of programs of study.
Tips for prospective students See professors in their office hours. They are willing to help, and will do a lot for a student that shows drive and respect for the course.
Talk to your advisor if you have any questions about your coursework, course load, or switching your major. They are a great resource for new students.
Get involved on campus; it'll look great on a resume one day!Academic Rigor Some of the lower-level classes are embarrassingly, boringly simple. They're good for a GPA boost before you start taking harder higher-level courses, but they leave much to be desired intellectually. It's a bit of a shame, too, for the professors here are rather intelligent, and are a little dismayed by student apathy that they are unfortunately forced to cater to.
Dorm Life I have found the hall directors, CC's (or RA's) and all the dorm staff to be pretty friendly. Note, though, that some dorms have A/C and others do not.
Food and Dining Personally, I'm a vegetarian who's a bit health-obsessed, and I can still find nutritious, non-meat things to eat. There's something for everybody, really.
What to do for fun To be honest, Southern is rather dead on the weekends. Most people party at neighboring schools or nightclubs, for campus is rather boring for those that want to let loose every so often.
Bang for the buck Southern, being a state school, is fairly inexpensive if that is what you need. However, I can't say that it is a top-notch institution. It's fine if you wish to get your Bachelor's with little student loan debt, but if you want a quality master's/doctoral degree, look for a school with a wider range of programs and prestige.
Great for these types of students Students who want to save money should check the school out. Also, our Education and Social Work programs are well-known, widely respected, and have helped many people get employed. (The Nursing program is as well, but that's provided that one is accepted into the major, a huge source of stress for many undergrads.)
Clubs and Activities There are quite a few major-specific/major-related clubs on campus, which is fun for students in those fields of study, as well as important for students who are undecided and want to know a little more about a specific major.
Greek Life The Greek Life is there for students that are motivated and wish to give back to the community--the sororities often host blood drives, for example.
Campus Safety I have never had a problem with safety, but at night it is best to not sneak off somewhere with someone you do not personally know--there has been a sexual assault supposedly not far from the main campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences It is a great school in my opinion. The classes are small so you actually are getting one-on-one time with the teacher. Most teachers are very helpful from experience.
Tips for prospective students Make sure they have your major! Also SCSU has a liberal arts program so if you are trying to jump into your major from day one this is not the school for you. The liberal arts program has helped me become more well rounded though.
Academic Rigor You are constantly being challenged which is nice. without motivation and teachers pushing you, you will get no where
Dorm Life The dorms are very fun and they usually hire cool people as RA's and DA's. the only thing is it is a dry campus.
Food and Dining Connecticut hall is where you will be doing most of your eating. In my opinion they always have great options and their is healthy options which is nice. Then in the student center their is about 5 more places to eat which are normally very good.
What to do for fun For fun where can i start, in new haven its all about the club scene so that is a possibility wednesday- saturday. then their will be parties and other things to do. then their is fraternities and other groups you can join for fun.I
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On saint pattys day its great because their is always the new haven day parade and it is crazy.
Clubs and Activities many clubs and intramural sports
Greek Life their is frats and sororities
Campus Safety Safety is great! Always police around when needed.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor This is an in-state, low budget school so not much academic rigor is required. But this doesn't mean that the professors do not expect do to do your best and take control of your own learning.
Dorm Life Do not spend time in a dorm. The dorms themselves seem clean and put together. However, all the students return to their homes on the weekends so dorm life after classes and on weekends are dead. Literally there is no dormlife to speak of.
Food and Dining Food seems okay. Most students in between classes frequent the bagel wagon in Engleman Hall. This is a nice lounge area where you can catch up with friends. If not near Engleman, there are plenty of vending machines around campus if you are diabetic or just need a pick me up before class. The food in the main halls seem to be good as well.
What to do for fun Southern is placed in New Haven. It has plenty of entertainment between concerts, shopping, bars, clubs, etc. Plus, right up the road is Yale University. Often students for both colleges meet at the same places so you will get to experience some new faces when you are out and about on the town.
Bang for the buck If you live in Connecticut and wish to commute, the price is pretty good. It is normally around 4000 to 5000 dollars. I wouldn't suggest staying on campus. Most students leave campus on the weekend anyway and so you are paying for a social life that doesn't exist if you choose to live on campus. For those from out of state, the price is ridiculous for the education and opportunities they give. I would definetly not go to Southern if you are from out of state.
Great for these types of students Students who live in Connecticut and want an inexpensive but good education. Also, the education program is excellent here.
Clubs and Activities I give this two stars because while this college has a plethora of campus activities there are no campus club fairs to allow new students to join or find out about then more. If you want to join you must contact the coordinator through email (if you can find it) or hope you find a flyer publicizing an event by a particular group. After that, I wish the best of luck to all to be in a group or club activity. For me, in the midst of all the work I have to do already, I'd rather try to finish my work than pursue a club that cleary doesn't want me in their group.
Greek Life The campus has lots of Greek life. No hazing that I know of goes on. The only downside is that the Greek life never seems to publicize themselves enough so no one knows where their house is, when they are accepting applications or when events are going on.
Campus Safety The campus is in the middle of New Haven a bustling city with lots of life. Unfortunately that life comes with a lot of not so good people as well. The campus, while set in the safer part of town, is spread out and has experienced some sexual assault and robbery in the area while I have been there (2 years). They do however have emergency phones for your use just in case you do witness or experience an event.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Southern is a mediocre University. The overall atmosphere of the school is not very friendly. Most professors do not know their students by name or bother to learn their names.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you are proactive and willing to stand up for yourself. You are definitely your only advocate at this school.
Academic Rigor Some classes are challenging but most are semi-easy.
Dorm Life Most students live off campus and commute to school.
Food and Dining Some choices, the food in the dining hall isn't amazing but it is okay.
What to do for fun New Haven, restaurants, clubs.
Bang for the buck The school is relatively cheap for in state students since the school is relatively average it equals out.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Nothing particular stands out.
Great for these types of students Commuters, students who do not expect to spend much time on campus.
Clubs and Activities Some variety, some choices for athletics, volunteering and group activities.
Greek Life Not incredibly important.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences It is a nice university. Campus is easy to navigate around, Proffesors are nice and helpful for the most part.
Tips for prospective students Classes fill up extremely quickly, it is difficult to complete your degree in the designated amount of time because if it. There is a lot of students, parking is a disaster... But improving. The first advisors you meet with do not give you enough direction so make sure you do your research and have your questions preppared beforehand.
Dorm Life I live off campus
Food and Dining I would say it is pretty standard but they do offer different options on different parts of campus at any given time.
What to do for fun Southern is located a few minutes away from downtown New Haven s there is lots to do from restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping etc
Bang for the buck It depends, tuition is expensive and keeps going up, while classes keep getting more and more students. Classes fill up quickly, and it can be difficult to get the classes you need.
Great for these types of students Commuters, and those who will live on campus would enjoy how close it is to downtown. There is always something going on, or access to whatever you need very close by.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Southern is a great school. They have amazing teaching and nursing program! The students that go there are friendly and there are tons of clubs to join. Also, the professors and faculty at Southern are always around willing to help with any problem you might have.
Tips for prospective students I would advise talking to your professors, even though the classes are small you still may have questions about the material. Southern's faculty are required to have office hours at least three days a week, so someone will always be on campus to answer a question you might have or just to chat. There is also a free tutoring and writing center! You should definitely check it out!!
Academic Rigor Some classes can be challenging but as long as you read, keep up with the topics you're discussing in class you should be fine! And if you still need a little help you can always come to your professors office hours, or to the free tutoring center!
Dorm Life I am a commuter so I don't live in the dorms but I hear it's not that bad.
Food and Dining There are tons of areas around campus to eat, not only is there Conn Hall (main student dining area), but the Adanti Student Center has several restaurants, there's the bagel wagon in Engleman, and several other small food shops around campus. Southern students also get discounts at some of the nearby restaurants with their hootloot card.
What to do for fun There are soooo many activites on campus everyday! Southern has at least 100 clubs and if you can't find one that fits you, you can always start your own for something you're interested in. Southern has a Pro-con committee that specializes in making activities for Southern's students.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Southern is a school with alot of opportunities. A school with caring and enthusiastic professors who are there to help you at any moment. Southern welcomes everyone with open arms and willing to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students Plan out what courses you need to take and when you want to graduate. Set goals for yourself so you don't fall behind and are left out of courses you need to help you move toward graduation.
Academic Rigor Southern challenges its students academic as well as set goals/expectations for all students to meet and maintain. Though challenging, the professors at Southern are always there to help and guide students when needed.
Dorm Life Dorm rooms are welcoming and clean and give you a home feeling. Every dorm building is in walking distance to every campus building. There is always someone in residence life available to help with any issue and safety is a priority and you can see that.
Food and Dining Food is great at Southern and there is food available in every building and the prices are decent
What to do for fun Southern is located just walking distances of great places to eat and great bars and clubs for those who like to hang out and enjoy a drink.
Bang for the buck Tuition is at a decent amount and it is definitely worth your money.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Southern has a unique and warming library dedicated to Chemistry majors and its comforting to know students before you and students after you have and will spend as many hours in that library stressing over your classes like you are. Most of the Chemistry majors have made this room their second home and everyone comes together in this room to help anyone when needed.
Great for these types of students If the economy hit you like it did for most people, Southern is at a great price and your education quality doesn't have to suffer.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for everything and everyone is inviting. Every club and activity help invites students of every majors to participate.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences My first impression of Southern has been great. I attended the Graduate Open House, and the professor I spoke with kept in touch with me during the application process. I had a snag in applying - they accepted me for the wrong semester, but it was easily fixed with a phone call. So far, so good.
Tips for prospective students Attend open houses, orientations, whatever you can, and get in touch with department heads. They can be your ally.
Academic Rigor Friends of mine who attended Southern felt sufficiently challenged, and at the same time were encouraged. I will adjust this review when I have experienced it for myself.
Dorm Life I won't be living in the dorms.
Food and Dining Delicious options.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the pricing is ridiculous; there's no way that living in a concrete-block dorm should cost five grand a semester. most of the professors are questionable at best, but there are a few floating around who are worthwhile. this is a good school to get some credits with, but not to live in, or graduate from.
Tips for prospective students live at home, if possible; you'll save money and you won't miss a thing. don't go to this school planning to graduate from it; use it as a stepping stone, the statistics will back me up on that.
Academic Rigor depends on your level of intelligence, and what classes you're taking. some professors take classes seriously, others don't.
Dorm Life tolerable, that's about it. small, dark, cramped rooms made out of concrete block, and i suspect our building doesn't have a janitor, if the floors are any indication. the washers and dryers are a bit crappy too. you'll want to spend your time elsewhere, for sure. the wifi, however, is barely up to pre-2000 standards. it cuts out a lot, and it seems like if two people try to load a webpage at the same time, you've exceeded bandwidth.
Food and Dining pretty hit and miss; i suspect the cooks aren't the same every week. you could do better cooking for yourself, but for what's essentially a buffet, not bad.
What to do for fun there's clubs and such, and if you like to party, well, you're in new haven. me personally, i just like to watch movies and go to my various clubs.
Bang for the buck if you're paying just tuition, you're getting an average deal. southern seems to specialize in mediocrity, save a few departments and professors. if you're living here, you're getting screwed, hard. apartments are cheaper, much nicer, and you can get your own personal space.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus nothing to really speak of, the campus is pretty plain.
Great for these types of students education majors should check this place out, it's basically all they do here. there's a nursing program, too, but i don't know much about it except apparently it's exclusive.
Clubs and Activities luckily, the clubs here will help take your mind off the rest. there's a club for damn near everything, and most are well-organized and fun to be in.
Greek Life no idea, i'm not involved. seems pretty popular, though.
Campus Safety i'm six foot, 220 pounds, and hairy, so people tend to not pick on me, but there's a reason that people i know call parking lot 8 rape alley. it seems like there's several sexual assaults on campus each year, and that's the reported ones. campus police are basically nonexistent; they're there to ticket cars and get fat. it's safer than the rest of the city, but that's not exactly an accomplishment. if you're a girl, get some pepper spray, if you're a tiny man, it might not be a bad idea to invest either.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I have loved my experiences at Southern Connecticut State University. It is so easy to get involved and there is something for all walks of life. As a student, I feel I am truly motivated to work hard for my future.
Tips for prospective students Get your applications and payments in early! Especially for housing. Also, get the right health forms in early so you don't have any holds when you try and register.
Academic Rigor The course load is intense, especially as a nursing major. However, because it is rigorous, you feel a huge sense of satisfaction and accomplishment at the end of the day.
Dorm Life The dorms are a great learning experience. You learn to live on your own and prioritize your time.
Food and Dining The food is decent, although a bit repetitive. Yet again, another learning experience in your personal health.
What to do for fun There are so many opportunities to have fun on campus. There are really cheap trips to Washington D.C. and New York, also, plenty of university events. There is the Jail-n-Bail in the spring that raises money for the Special Olympics, Relay for Life, and free movie nights in the student center.
Clubs and Activities Psychology club, Colleges Against Cancer, Italian club, Anime club, and many, many, more!!
Campus Safety Very safe campus. I always feel comfortable. There are emergency lights throughout campus and the police are a constant presence.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers and staff are very helpful and friendly. Most classrooms are small enough where there is the option to interact one on one with the professor. The professors offer office hours for students who have questions or need extra help. The fellow students are also helpful, many are willing to get together for group study sessions before large exams.
Am enjoying being here The people are very friendly and the campus is beautiful. Although it is a large enough school where you do not know all the students the ones you do interact with are great people.
Bang for the buck For the price of tuition I feel that I am definitely getting my money's worth. The classes are informative and challenging. Also the school offers so many activities and organizations, students are bound to find a club they are interested in.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you go to class on time and try to participate in class discussions. Professors really appreciate when students answer questions and voice opinions. It shows that you are actually reading the material and paying attention in class.
Great for these types of students Southern is a great school for sociable and hardworking students. There are a wide variety of clubs and organizations for students to join. The classes are challenging and require outside work, but it is worth it in the end.
