Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have completed a total of 34 hours at the UT campus. So far, I have learned a lot from my professors. While some classes are huge (200+), others allow for one-on-one time with other students and faculty. Even in the 200+ classes, discussion sections are set up so students can interact with T.A.s, feel more comfortable asking questions, and to learn more about the material.
Am enjoying being here For the most part, UT is an enjoyable place to study, live, and learn. Found in the heart of Knoxville, the campus has some urban feel to it, while still remaining true to its Southern heritage. Greek life is big on campus, but there are also many other clubs and societies to join on campus. Dorm life also helps new students find their niche.
Bang for the buck In-state tuition at UT is relatively cheap compared to other schools in the state. While it is not Vandy, the education is what you make of it. As I always say, My high school had drop-outs and people who ended up at Princeton, the education is what you want it to be. It is the same story at UT
Tips for prospective students Apply early and look for scholarship opportunities. Housing is also important. I would advise to live on campus as a freshmen. It is a great way to meet new people and friends. Continue to work hard in high school. UT keeps raising their standards as years go by. For the most part, be yourself, and let the person you are shine through on the application. :-)
Great for these types of students Students who enjoy a challenge.
Students who want to succeed.
Students who are looking for opportunities to internship and work closely with faculty.
Students who enjoy social activities, and students who want to feel like they are a part of a big ORANGE family.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much more about mathematics than I ever did in high school I finally learned how to add and subtract negative numbers.
Am enjoying being here This time away from all of my high school friends and my family has allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and meet many new people one of which I will be rooming with next year.
Bang for the buck U.T. Knoxville may be a bit on the pricey side of state run schools but with the HOPE scholarship and the quality of education that is being offered the slight difference in price is not an issue.
Tips for prospective students The best tip for students looking at going to UT. Knoxville is to do a college visit because that is the only way you can really get a feel of the campus and the students that go there. Another great thing about U.T. Knoxville is Black board do not wait to get your user name and password straightened out because almost every teacher will post notes, homework assignments, or upcoming events that you will need to be aware of. The last tip is to make friends with your R.A it will come in very handy through the year.
Great for these types of students U.T. is a great option for any student who is willing to do at least half of the work to get the grade. It is an especially good option for undecided students because U.T. Knoxville curriculum is designed so that when you decide upon a major you do not have extra credit that you do not need, and U.T. career services has division especially for undecided students to help them decide upon a major. The career services also provides help when you wish to find a job on or off campus, so anyone wanting to work while in school would do well in choosing U.T. Knoxville.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot College learning is amazingly different from high school learning in all the best ways! I just completed my first semester at the University of Tennessee and found I wanted to wake up and walk to class every day. I am an English minor and there are English classes on every topic imaginable, such as technology involved in science fiction, feminism, and detective stories. I had a very interesting math class, focused on the fourth dimension and a spectacular intro to journalism class (CCI 150) that gave me a wonderful overview of the field I hope to go into one day.
Am enjoying being here Knoxville is a truly eclectic city, with something for everyone. There is truly a club for every interest on campus, from clubs focusing on photography to environmental issues to LGBT rights to badminton. Things are always happening on campus, and since most freshman live on campus, it's very easy to make friends! Downtown Knoxville, a short walk or drive from the campus, has so much to offer, including a Cereal Bar, serving hundreds of types of cereal until the wee hours of the night. There are lots of music shows at many venues, especially The Valarium, around town. And, of course, there are always sports to watch!
Bang for the buck The university costs, all in all, about $20,000 a year. It's very reasonable for a good public school and I have not come across any hidden fees so far. UT has a well-organized scholarship section on the website, so definitely check there for official financial updates, along with checking websites like Cappex as ways to make more money. Books are expensive, and you'll need all the help you can get!
Tips for prospective students If you're going to take a night class, be sure you have the motivation to go to it. Make sure to sell your books back at the end of the semester, ideally at a place other than UT's official bookstore because they pay the best. The library is a great resource for information, so utilize the library and the nice librarians! Talk to your professors and go to their office hours. It's nice to get to know them, especially if they can serve as a mentor for you, and it shows them you truly care about your education. Do all your homework before going out with friends, so you can socialize without the guilt! Talk to your academic advisers often. College is definitely an adjustment, and you will grow as a person.
Great for these types of students The University of Tennessee is great for in-state students because of the HOPE scholarship. It's great for students who want to experience living on their own with the comfort of still being able to visit home for the weekend if they so desire. It's a school with a lot of people, so if you're looking for the most personal academic attention, it's probably not your best bet. It's wonderful for students who want to live in a moderately-sized city with lots to do.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot At the University of Tennessee, classes are not just a joke. I enjoy going to most of my classes. the professors are involved with their students and I feel that I have learned a lot. However, a good portion of what I have learned has not just come from classes. The experience you get here at UT is one that helps each individual grow in their own ways. I have learned more about myself in the past two years here then anything else. I do not believe you will get an experience like that anywhere else. UT has many opportunities for students to succeed, you just have to soak it all up.
Am enjoying being here UT has one of the most unique aspects about it that makes being a student here so enjoyable. The spirit at the University of Tennessee is like nothing I have ever seen. Everyone, students, faculty, allumni, community all have pride for the Vols. It brings us all together and once you go here you will forever bleed orange. It is just something you have to experience and it makes being a Vol so enjoyable.
Bang for the buck I am an out of state student and tuition is not cheap. You will never regret going here and spending the money, it is just expensive. However for an in-state student it is a pretty good match. There are a lot of aid and scholarship's for in-state students. As far as the out-of-state students go, hang in there. We will have prestigious jobs that pay well when we graduate that can help with paying back the debt.
Tips for prospective students Don’t waste one second being unhappy and get involved with everything that interests you. Remember that everyone is in the same boat you are. Finding new friends, being independent from your parents, living in a new place, and making your own decisions are all characteristics of every college freshman. Don’t be scared, instead, be outgoing and open to the extraordinary. Many things will change you within your first year, but always be happy with who you are and who you become. Listen as well as communicate, attend events that interest you, get involved with some type of organization, be open to new ideas and always put school work first. You are first and foremost attending college to learn. College is about the experience and at the University of Tennessee you will get that experience so long as you soak it up.
Great for these types of students Students that want to have fun, learn a lot, meet new people, gain memories and be apart of something bigger than themselves. These are the type of students that prosper here. There is not one type of person here. If you are a preppy type, jock, goth, gangsta it doesn't matter. You will find friends and will fit in. There are so many different types of people here. As long as you fit the first sentence the University of Tennessee is for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot When I went to UT for a tour, I already had in mind that I wanted to go there, but the guides made the statement that they let you select your own major, basically design it how you want it, and that there are a vast number of alternative courses for core requirements. If it weren't for the alternatives, I don't think I would learn nearly as much about what I want to learn about.
Am enjoying being here UTK is my home away from home. I miss being there and being able to socialize with my friends, as well as just find my own personal me space to go study or practice. The music facilities are top-notch, especially since the music building is under construction and they've had to acquire makeshift facilities. The band truly is spectacular and I always recommend UT above any school because of the comfortable learning environment and the school's deep-rooted traditions.
Bang for the buck Compared to most universities, UT is very affordable. Room and board is relatively inexpensive as well, so for the out-of-state student, or for the in-state student that just wants out of the house, UT gives you a great living environment for what it's worth. The classrooms are set up amazingly with a lot of state-of-the-art technology. And I'm always amazed by the selection of books in the library that are just there for all of us students -- and it's free! UT is definitely worth going to because it's not just affordable, but there are so many free services available to all students.
Tips for prospective students -Be prepared: If you're one of those kids in high school like I was, studying isn't your favorite thing to do. College is a BIG step up and studying will make every class fly by easier.
-Communicate: Don't be afraid to be that kid who answers all the questions. You're in college to learn, and it really helps the teachers to know that you're learning, not just sitting there dead like everyone else can be at 8 in the morning.
-Socialize: It's college and you only live once. But do it wisely. Like your parents always warned you, watch out for the bad crowd. But make friends! College is an entirely different atmosphere than high school in that, for the most part, cliques are ignored! And having a good group of friends takes a load of stress off your shoulders when finals come around, or when you just need to talk. Plus, it's always great to be in the crowd that's going nuts on gameday.
-Again, be prepared: Nobody likes 8am courses. But chances are that you might have to take them because it's the only class open and you need it. But avoid that mindset. Instead think, It's 8am. All those annoying people that distract me aren't in here. It's all the smarter students that WANT to be here, those people who have the passion to do their work and follow their career choice. This may not be my best subject, but these people can help me and it'll be a lot easier for me to learn.Great for these types of students If I said all, it'd be a lie, but it would also be a lie if I didn't. UT, like any college, is a choice of preference. The teachers care, the work is as easy or as hard as you make, the environment is a prestigious, tradition-filled one. Everyone that's there has a drive to be there. If you're not a big campus person though and you want a small school, UT may not be right because the campus has a lot of walking room and a lot of hills to cover. But even then, the campus has buses running all the time. But if you can overlook the crowd and size factor, UT is a great and highly recommended learning facility, and I wouldn't tell anyone any different.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The University of Tennessee has a grueling science program. They have one of the most challenging science programs in the South, but the teachers are willing to help you out with anything and they are very flexible. If you are majoring in any sciences or engineering, you will get the most out of your education at UT. Go vols!
Am enjoying being here There is always something to do a UT, wether its a club organizations, greek life, or going out on the strip. Theres is never a moment of boredom and the people that you meet on campus are fantastic as well as the staff. It is by far the most friendly campus i have been to
Bang for the buck The University of Tennessee's in state tuition is some of the cheapest I have researched, and with them offerin tons of scholarships to current and future students, they are fairly cheap. Most students that attend UT have their entire school paid for by aid, grants, and scholarships through UT.
Tips for prospective students Study hard! Ut does not mess around when it comes to academics. The professors and classes are not easy. The best thing that worked out for me was everything we went over in class that day, study the material until you feel comfortable. Another tip is stay away from the parties, alcohol, and drugs. Unfortunately UT has become a bit of a party school so do not let it interfere with your studies. Keep yourself grounded and focused, and you will come out just fine
Great for these types of students UT is a great school for anyone, no exceptions! Everyone can find their place at UT. They have a very diverse and intelligent student body. You do have to be able to keep yourself grounded and focused and be very responsible about your grades. Other than that everyone will welcome you!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot At University of Tennessee at Knoxville you will learn a lot if you try. If you do not try to study and learn your material then you will not succeed.
Tips for prospective students The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is a great school. This university is very different from high school. In order to succeed you will have to give 110 percent. There are many places and people at the university that are there to help students and provide them with help in any way you made need it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot In my first year at UT, I have already learned so much. General Education and elective requirements allow for personal choice in most subjects, so you can explore new topics that you may usually not have gotten the chance to learn about. I have found that my professors are all very informed about their subjects and cover relevant material thoroughly. Even in subjects that I thought I had little interest in before beginning, I have found myself learning a lot and enjoying the class. We have several nationally recognized programs and a huge selection of majors and minors.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love everything about UT. There is so much diversity and activity around campus. There is always something to do or see, and there is an organization or group for every interest. It has been my experience that the people are generally friendly and helpful, from school officials to the custodial staff. Students are willing to lend a hand or just sit and chat. My favorite aspect, though, has to be the spirit! Knoxville is definitely a football town, and the atmosphere is always alive with Big Orange pride. Even where sports aren't concerned, everyone is proud to be a Vol!
Bang for the buck With reasonable tuition rates and ample financial aid opportunities, UT is an excellent value. Whether it is need-based, academic, or athletic aid, there are so many opportunities for help. There is no reason that you could not find generous amounts of money if you make an effort.
Tips for prospective students - Make friends. They provide reliable help in classes and friendly faces around campus.
- Explore. Walk around campus in your free time and get a feel for where everything is. Be familiar with all the buildings, even if you have no classes there. You never know where you'll end up next semester, and it lowers stress to know where you're going before classes start up.
- Ask for help. This applies to all aspects of UT. Struggling in class? Get a tutor! They're free! Need advice? Counselors are there for you. Making an academic plan? Advisors are available all the time. Need money for school? Talk to the financial aid department any time.
- Learn the traditions. UT is rich with traditions. Learn Rocky Top, paint The Rock, and check out the Torchbearer. Learning about the meanings behind these and participating will add memorable experiences to your time here and bring you together with others, both past and present.
- Have fun! Enjoy your years at UT and have a blast, but stick to your goals.Great for these types of students - Outgoing: There are a lot of people on campus. Speak up for what you need and want. Also, being outgoing will enable you to make many friends.
- Motivated: With so much going on around campus, students need to be able to keep themselves focused on where they need to be.
- Spirited: UT is all about Vol Pride. On or off the field, life on campus is so much fun if you get into the spirit of things. Thousands of students and fans become a family while singing Rocky Top!Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am a sophomore this year, and even with just three semesters under my belt, I feel like I have learned a full four year's worth of material. Every teacher I have had thus far is both knowledgeable in their field and capable of teacher the material to college students. I took twenty hours this semester with great success due to my study habits and my teachers' enthusiasm to make sure each student learned.
Am enjoying being here I was able to attend the governor's school for the sciences before I came to UT which was beneficial in learning the campus, meeting new people, and adjusting to the college classroom experience. Now that I am a student at UT, I am enjoying that experience even more. I am in the marching band which allows me to meet new people every day. With so many different organizations on campus, I think that anyone can find where they fit in at UT.
Bang for the buck UT is more expensive than other public schools in Tennessee, but I feel like the quality of education you receive is far greater than other universities. As a math major, I know that the math faculty at UT is one of the best. Every math teacher I have had is making great strides not only in his teaching, but also his area of research. If the student is willing to work hard, the teachers will do whatever they can to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students Anyone wishing to attend UT should make sure they are comfortable with a university having a fairly large number of students. Even though there are many students that attend UT, the class sizes are small. In fact, some of my college classes have been smaller than classes in high school. Working hard and asking questions is essential to succeeding not only here but anywhere. Take a campus tour to get to know the campus a little better. See if you can talk to a student currently enrolled to find out even more about the campus because information from other students might be more beneficial than any pamphlet you receive.
Great for these types of students UT is a place for students to learn and have fun. The academics are excellent for the studious type like myself. The athletics program is great for anyone interested in playing or just watching. With so many opportunities to get involved, everyone can find a group of people that might turn out to be lifelong friends. I know from my experience on campus that once I graduate, I will have many new friends with whom I will most certainly stay in contact.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Every class is challenging but not impossible. While some teachers don't seem to care about their students, there are plenty who care about your advancement at the university. A large amount of the professors I've had at UT have been very helpful and even punctual in replying to me if I've e-mailed them with a question or for clarification. The subject matter of most classes is moderately challenging, but if you can find the way of studying that works best for you, you will be fine. The more time you devote to a class, the more you will learn during your enrollment.
Am enjoying being here I have made plenty of friends during my college career just by meeting them through my courses or extracurricular activities. The best part about UT is that if you want to be around all the partying, it's easy to find; but if you want to avoid the parties and get to a nice quiet place to focus on your studies, that is just as easy! Many people talk about how they don't like how UT is all about partying, or the Greek life, but if you don't want to be a part of all of that, you don't have to. It's a large enough campus to where you can make it the school you want it to be for you. You can even virtually create you own major if the school doesn't already have it.
Bang for the buck Tuition isn't so bad for the quality of learning! If you're an in-school student, finding financial aid through grants and scholarships like the HOPE are quick and simple. One of my friends who attends from out of state said it's more challenging trying to pay tuition to go to UT, but the scholarships ARE out there. You just have to look for them.
Tips for prospective students Apply early on to both the school and for financial aid! UT is really good at helping pay for school if you really need it. Living on campus is highly recommended if you want to avoid dense traffic on a daily basis and especially recommended for your first year (it's a great experience!). Obtain a parking pass early if possible to avoid getting many tickets (the campus patrolmen are really good at finding cars without tags), and either rent your books or buy them early on to avoid book store lines (unless you're not sure if you'll need every book for your classes)
Great for these types of students Students who keep up with their classwork.
Students who know how to study properly.
Students who can be flexible with diverse assignments (different paper formats, websites, etc)
Students who want to really broaden their horizons and earn a degree that is only earned, not just given out.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning so much at The University of Tennessee so far. I just started in the Fall of 2010 and feel like I have learned more than I ever did in high school. My hardest class for the fall semester was Geology (planetary bodies) because the concepts are just difficult to wrap your head around but I learned so much about other planets. I also took a math class that went over everything that was taught in high school and I feel that this will help me in my next 3.5 years and even later in life. My funnest class by far was communication studies. The teacher was vey laid back and the class felt like a family. We did numerous speeches and to be honest I was super nervous at first, but as the semester went on, I felt good when I was in front of everybody.
You will definitely learn a lot here at UT and each year it gets harder and harder to get into the school. At times it will be challenging, but you will learn so much here!Am enjoying being here I absolutely love it here. The best part of school has the be the football games because we are seriously like one big family when everyone is at Neyland Stadium. Greek Life is a huge deal at UT but you don't have to be in a frat or sorority to have fun. Im not in one and there is still a bunch of people to meet and hang out with. I feel like the college is pretty laid back and its fairly easy to meet people here. Come to Big Orange country and see what I mean!!!
Bang for the buck I love it here but it has a weird feel. Basically Knoxville is the University of Tennessee and thats it. If you don't like always being at school than this school may not be for you but its so much fun.
I have learned so much already in one semester. Also if you live instate, than tuition is like 10,000 dollars less so its affordable, especially if you apply early and get scholarships from the school as well as websites like Cappex.com.Tips for prospective students Come for a visit and just have fun. Come with your friends to the campus doesn't feel so large when you first come. When school starts, don't stay in your room, go out and meet everybody cause the fist week is where everybody is new and looking for new friends. Also if your a freshman, get a meal plan (10 meals, not unlimited because you don't get very many dining dollars) and stay in a dorm. Carrick is a great dorm because you share two rooms with 3 other people and this building is in the middle of presidential court which is where everybody hangs out and is where some of the food is.
Apply early, either November 1 (for scholarship opportunities) or December 1 (application deadline).
Also bring winter clothes after fall break, but keep some summer ones because the weather is really weird here. Also do bring an umbrella and or rain coat because it rains a lot. Bring some good tennis shoes because you walk everywhere everyday and flip flops will hurt you feet after a while.Great for these types of students This college is great for kids who love the big city feel on campus.
This college is great for kids who want to be in a frat or sorority.
This college is great for kids who want a possible internship of the chance to study abroad.
This college is great for kids who want to meet a lot of people.
This college is great for kids who love the color ORANGE!!!
This college is great for kids who have friends in Tennessee because a lot of high schoolers go here for college so you will for sure already have friends.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot UT is one of the best universities to attend for a student who is undecided on their major/minor, etc. I began seriously considering UT with 3 possible majors in mind, three opposites: Law, Nursing, and Intelligence - all three of which UT offers. I have heard many times that UTK is the best place to go because of its sheer size and its generous amounts of classes/groups/majors available to each student. I have officially decided, UT is the college for me, and nursing will be my major when I apply in November!
Will enjoy being here The people on campus and off are amazing, I have never in my life met such kind people! Everyone at U.T. is very helpful, I am going on my official guided 'tour' in April, however, my first visit to U.T. I went on a self-guided tour with my family. My first visit was a bit overwhelming, but a few students took the time out of their busy schedules to show me some of their favorite spots! Go Vols!
Bang for the buck Although UTK is a bit expensive for those of us coming from out of state, the plethora of scholarship opportunities is hardly discouraging. There is an opportunity for everyone at UTK.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Every single class that I am in is interesting and teaches me valuable information. There is no busy work and the teachers do not waste your time. The teachers engage you in discussions and don't mind answering questions.
Am enjoying being here The University of Tennessee is very beautiful. Their are squirrels everywhere. The food is good and it isn't hard to find. Community bathrooms aren't a plus, but they are kept pretty clean so it's not hard to deal with.
Bang for the buck UTK is pretty expensive, but the money is well worth it. There are TONS of free services, such as tutoring, help with picking a major, counseling, advising, and just about anything you could possibly need help with. There is even a person in the library that focuses simply on helping students find good sources for their research papers. There are over 100 computers in the library for your personal use, and there are over 7 printers!
Tips for prospective students Bring a heavy jacket for when it gets cold. If you don't like the cold or the rain, this is not your ideal school.
Bring a good pair of tennis shoes because you will walk all the time.
Be specific about the roommate you want to have. Don't worry though; they are very good at matching you up with someone that is similar to you.
You do not need to get the best meal plan; they go a long way. It's also not very hard to find free food.
Have a good backpack! it definitely comes in handy.Great for these types of students Students that want to meet a lot of new people.
Students that want a good education and want to have a blast at the same time.
Students that don't mind walking.
Students that want a challenge.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot While UT is an academic institution, most funding goes to the athletic department. This is evident in the quality of professors. Some classes are very large, and most of them require you do a little self-teaching. Very few of my professors have offered very enlightening lectures; most lecturers highlight the surface of the topic, yet you will be tested over the depth of it. I have, however, had a few professors with whom I learned and clicked. When you come across those educators, hold on to them! Take other courses they teach if in your major(s)/minor(s).
Am enjoying being here For students interested in the quintessential college experience of booze, Greek life, and football/basketball, Tennessee is the place for you. With an exciting yet unpredictable SEC football team and many social events throughout Knoxville, UT is an energetic campus. However, if you don't enjoy partying 24/7 and would prefer quiet relaxation, you will be miserable. The dorms are usually loud, especially Hess, and even the library is noisy. Furthermore, the more studious types will be so overloaded with busy work from class, that escape from a study place is nearly impossible.
Bang for the buck For in-state tuition, you can't beat the pricetag. An education is offered along with many facilities not offered to private schools (however inaccessible), and the athletics kindle a unity on campus that truly feels like college. The city of Knoxville is very metropolitan, so there are many activities available off-campus. However, qualities of students and faculty are sacrificed along with prestige and competitiveness in graduate schools.
Tips for prospective students Do your research/Sort your priorities: Make sure big is what you want and that you are ready academically and mentally to be on your own (since you will often be teaching yourself)

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Absolutely. Students planning UT will be pleasantly surprised in the quality of education that is made available. Subjects and topics are interesting and professors put a great deal of effort into making the class enjoyable and even a little entertaining. One piece of advice I have for all students is to be aware of class syllabuses. At my high school, they were inconsequential pieces of paper. However, I was caught a little off guard at my suffering grade at the beginning of the semester, caused by missed online assignments only posted on the class syllabus.
Am enjoying being here UT is very enjoyable. The freedom of a college schedule, with really only about two to three classes each day, is extremely refreshing. Dorm life, of course, is amazing for meeting new people and finding new things to do. Even if your living at home, life at UT offers more than plenty of opportunities to get out and do cool stuff.
Bang for the buck I, unfortunately, am not the best reference for value. My only other college experience was dual enrollment during high school on a grant, so my experiences are limited. I think tuition is quite fair, just because of the quality of education made available to each student. Even freshman classes like English and Psychology are made interesting. I happen to think the living costs at UT are a little expensive, almost equaling tuition, but compared to a year of living off campus in an apartment or rental house, it is quite affordable.
Tips for prospective students UT laced with very intelligent students, giving University scholarships somewhat high standards. If you can, strive for a 31 on your ACT. I only took the SAT once, and I didn't even consider it for my application to UT, but absolutely, aim high on it as well. However, I believe the ACT is a prerequisite for all applicants anyway, so aim high. All the programs offered are very good, so just choose according to your prospective careers. For those students looking to live on campus, dorms do have different living conditions. All of the dorms I very similar rooms, but the larger dorms tend to live a little wilder. If you want to focus on your studies, or just live in a more peaceful place, get into a learning community dorm like Morrill.
Great for these types of students While UT meets the needs of a wide range of students, it does have its specialties. Any students interested in engineering, look towards UT. No only is the program great, Oak Ridge National Lab is like 40 minutes away, making professional and research opportunities incredibly available. People focused on the Arts can find quite a niche at UT. Humanities students can also find a home at UT. Also, any sports fan has a home a UT. Besides our amazing basketball and football programs, there are TONS of sporting opportunities for the everyday student, including intramural volleyball, swimming, soccer, football, and bowling. Sportsmen also have a home here, with plenty of access to the Tennessee, Clinch, and Holston Rivers, as well as the Smokey Mountains, which are only about an hour and a half away.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences My freshman year at the University of Tennessee has been absolutely amazing. The campus is gorgeous, especially for being in downtown Knoxville, and there's so much to do in the area. The tuition is a little steep and classes were definitely a challenge, but the staff really works with you to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students Morrill Hall is definitely the nicest (not the biggest, but the nicest) but Clement Hall or Massey Hall will give you the shortest walking distances to class (unless you're going to be on the Ag campus, in which case you'll want Morrill or Carrick). Don't be too proud to ask for help- college classes are an adjustment no matter how diligent and intelligent you are, and it's better to get help from the start rather than scrambling at the end of the semester.
Academic Rigor The University of Tennessee is on the fast track to be a top school in the nation, so as a result, those professors mean business. They're not over-the-top or anything, but the classes (in general) are challenging. Compared to high school, college classes are definitely more demanding because there are fewer opportunities to earn grades, and you have to motivate yourself to do it all. Overall, nothing you can't handle as long as you understand some work is involved.
Dorm Life Honestly not bad. It's a college dorm, so it's not going to be 5-star luxury, but as far as dorms go I think UTK has some of the nicest options.
Food and Dining It's dorm food. It's going to suck. But there are plenty of options so you can switch things up and usually find something that isn't too cafeteria-like. Just go easy on the Dining Dollars- make sure you ration them out.
What to do for fun Anything and everything. There's more sporting events than you'll know what to do with, and they're all fun to go to because the school spirit is through the roof. There are lots of concerts that come through, many even on campus in Thompson-Boling Arena. There are two malls nearby (driving) and every kind of restaurant you can think of (at least 20 within walking distance). Market Square and World's Fair Park are two things every UT student MUST experience. And there are countless parks and stuff nearby for the outdoorsy people.
Bang for the buck It's expensive, no doubt. But the education you get combined with all the social opportunities is simply a steal. Plus they are constantly working to make the campus and classes better, so you see your money being put to good use, not just spent on staff salaries.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Well there's a big rock (aptly named The Rock) that students paint to announce everything from football games to wedding proposals.
Great for these types of students Everyone. The campus is the perfect mix of city (it's downtown) and country (you're in the Appalachian Mountains so some good open greenery is never far away). There are some easier majors but also plenty of challenging ones with plenty of research/internship opportunities.
Clubs and Activities There are more clubs and groups than you'll know what to do with. Definitely something for everybody. Academic, college-specific (Nursing vs. Engineering, etc.), political, fine arts, and of course tail-gating are just a few options.
Greek Life Greek life is huge at UTK, but you don't have to join to have a social life like at some other SEC schools.
Campus Safety Certain areas near campus can be rough, but nothing too scary. You're in the downtown area of a major city, so all things considered it's pretty safe. Just use your common sense! A free night shuttle is included in your tuition, so make use of that! Just call them up and they'll be by in minutes to take you where you need to go so you never have to go out alone at night,

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Being at Tennessee has given me opportunities that I would have never dream about before coming here. After my first year, I had met tons of friends that were helpful to me on learning about the campus and ways to be involved. I had the opportunity to meet some exceptional people that have change the course of my goals and showed me there are a lot of doors out there for you. All you have to do is walk through them.
Am enjoying being here This place is my second home. I love being here, especially in the fall with the college football atmosphere every weekend. People here make you feel welcome and in no time, I felt part of the Knoxville community. Being from out of state, the pressure of finding friends and fitting it is always there, but I promise you will find someone just like you here to share your experiences with.
Bang for the buck I am from out of state so it can be somewhat expensive. But trust me, the experience and knowledge that you learn here is worth it. I was not going to allow the tuition to keep me from coming here and I am glad I did not. The opportunities that I have leaving this college is more than I could of imagine coming in as a freshman.
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to do things your freshman year. There are a lot of great opportunities laying out there waiting just for you. Interact not just in the classrooms but in your dorms and other outlets around campus. They are great way to meet new people, make lasting friendships, and open up your network of people to provide opportunities in the future.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I am currently a Senior in high school and I have made many visits to UTK's beautiful campus in the past. I expect to learn a tremendous amount that will seriously boost me intellectually. I can't wait!
Will enjoy being here I am positive my experience here will be fantastic. I haven't seen or heard anything otherwise!
Bang for the buck It's a really nice college with an extensive reputation. For an In-state student, this place is 100% worth it. For an out-of-state student, this place is still 100% percent worth it because UTK's out-of-state tuition isn't nearly as much as most of its competitor colleges.
Tips for prospective students Apply early! They love to see excited, active students. Write the BEST essay you can possibly manage! The application essay is a HUGE key to being accepted.
Great for these types of students Students who like to play sports but aren't the best.
Students who want a GREAT education for not too much money.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am pursuing a Child and Family Studies major and Psychology minor. I have been surprised at how much all my professors, thus far, want you to strive and excel in college, but more importantly in life. I thought coming to a big university I would not have connections with the professors, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the drive most of them have to help you succeed.
Am enjoying being here I throughly enjoy being a student at the University of Tennessee. I am involved with many things on campus including RUF, TeamVols, and intramurals. Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) is a campus ministry that has really helped make this big university smaller; it has been nice to connect with people with similar values. TeamVols is a great way to give back to the community and volunteer around Knoxville. Intramurals have provided me with friendly competition and a way to continue sports while in college. These three organizations have definitely enhanced my time at UTK.
Bang for the buck I feel like UT is a great school for its tuition price. I never wanted to pay an arm and a leg for college, and I am thankful that UT's academics challenge me for a smaller price tag.
Tips for prospective students My biggest advice would be to get involved, get involved, and get involved. College is a great, but it is hard to meet friends in the beginning. Persevere. Try as many things as you can until you find a group that fits you.
Great for these types of students I would say most people are able to find a group here that fits them.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much in my classes here at UT, and surprisingly enough it doesn't matter if you are in a class of 20 or 200 you will learn as much as the work you put into it. If you're in a big class then the professors and TAs will always help and if you're in a small class its the same.
Am enjoying being here I am not a member of a sorority and I am from out of town. I feel like there is a distinct percentage of the student population that is in a Greek organization. Also this is a big football school! I have been looked at crazily many many times because I did not know what was going on in the sports side of the school.
Bang for the buck Tuition was just raised and I feel that it did not change anything. There is still not enough parking on campus and sometimes it is impossible to get into the classes you need to progress with your major.
Tips for prospective students Apply early and make sure you get the scholarship application in! Also, take the campus tour and make sure you go into the dorms before you choose one! You will likely be surprised.
Great for these types of students Fraternity and Sorority driven.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot UT has a diverse and well-rounded campus. There are so many majors to choose from, with professors that are knowledge and understanding when it comes to new undergraduates in their fields. I have never been turned down when I go to a professor for help, and I have never been bored in a class at UT. There are so many to choose from, and they cover pretty much any and every topic. Just recently, I took a class in English on Video Gaming.
Am enjoying being here Coming from West Tennessee, UT took a lot of getting use to. There are so many hills and so much stuff to do. It is a little overwhelming at first, but if you get inVOLved and take part in a club or organization- it definitely takes the pressure of your back. Plus, you get a cool group of friends from every where.
Bang for the buck UT really has a lot to offer. From the study abroad programs to the top research library in the South, UT gives back to their students one hundred percent. The campus food takes some getting use to, but the transportation(T-LINK IS THE BEST) MORE than makes up for it.
Tips for prospective students Learn the bus schedule. Use the T-Link. Study and go out and explore. UT always has something going on: lectures, plays, concerts, and great seminars. Don't hole yourself up! College is for doing and learning. Also, GO TO FOOTBALL GAMES! Football at UT is a sight to see, it is indescribable. The atmosphere is mind-blowing.
Great for these types of students Any type of student. There is something for everyone.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot As far as the academics went, UT was great! I learned a lot from my teachers and most of them were very educated in their subjects and were always open during office hours for help. A lot of the information I learned at UT was useful for when I came back home to my other school. You just have to connect with your professors and show them that you are interested in their class. A lot of professors give some sort of incentive for showing up to class like if you are there 85% of the time, they'll drop your lowest test grade and replace it with your highest or give you 10 extra credit points on your final, so it's good to go to class all the time other than because you need to be in class anyways. Also a lot of professors base all their tests off their lectures and they don't have them up on their websites for people to look at if they don't come to class so if you're looking to pass, you need to attend everyday.
Did enjoy being here I didn't enjoy being here. For those people who love to party, Greek life or athletes, then this is the school for you. UT is very into their sports programs, especially football, yet they take away from their cultural programs like art and dance, which sucks big time. The strip is nothing but bars and clubs so if you're not into that then it's going to be hard to find something to do. If you bring a car, parking is a nightmare and if you don't have a car, you're looking at a 45 minute to a 1 hour bus ride to get to Walmart for basic necessities. The same thing goes for the mall and anywhere else you would like to go for fun. Another reason I didn't like UT was because being in East Tennessee, I and the few friends that I made their experienced racism which was something I thought a university like UT wouldn't have.
Bang for the buck UT is pretty expensive for a in-state school, and if you are out of state, it's really hard to get any kind of funding. In-state students can get things like the HOPE scholarship and other Tennessee scholarships to offset the costs.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The chancellor here is pretty determined to make this school a top 25 research college, and because of that the classes are intense. I am in the Honors Program and get to take honors classes. I have learned so much this year. The professors usually have office hours, and if you can't get ahold of them then there are the TAs. Some classes you can get by without going to class, but it is always good to go just in case there is a clicker quiz!
Am enjoying being here At first I thought it was going to be hard coming to a school of over 27,000. I love it so much! The RAs are great and are there to help you. There are tutoring groups in some dorms, so that helps. And there is nothing like a big SEC football game on Saturdays! There are so many activities to do, and the TRECs is awesome... so many different exercise opportunities! There is also the HPER which has a rock climbing wall!
Bang for the buck At first the classes are really hard and you might end up not doing too great. Some teachers try to weed the non-committed out, but other than the occasional awful teacher, you get what you pay for!
Tips for prospective students STUDY! Just because it is a major SEC school, does not mean it is all fun and games. There is serious hard work to be done. You might not have had to study in high school, but college is TOTALLY different. And if you are in architecture, be prepared to live in architecture building. Engineers be prepared to always being doing homework on fun yellow paper.
Great for these types of students Is great for pretty much anyone. There is a great engineering program, and all of the other programs are great too. Great athletic programs, awesome Greek system, and clubs for just about everything

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Since I began classes at UTK I have learned more than I ever thought I would. The classes here are very good. The professors I have had so far make the material very well understood by using real life examples rather than just throwing all of the information in out face and not telling us why it is useful to know it in the future.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love this university. At first, I was worried about the size and amount of student who attend UTK, but that changed after the first couple of weeks. It's very easy to learn your way around campus and everyone is very helpful if you don't know where your class is. My college experience is more than I ever thought it would be since I've been here at UTK. I was thinking about not coming here and staying home for college but I am more than glad I decided to come here.
Bang for the buck Prices are a bit expensive but you have to look at the fact of how big this university is and all of the students who go here. I would recommend applying for scholarships while you're still in high school and also while you're attending to help with expenses.
Tips for prospective students Definitely apply earlier than later. Also make sure you have looked at the available majors offered here so you aren't wasting your time taking classes you don't need or you come here without knowing whether or not your major is being offered. Another thing, I think it would be best that you get your general education classes out of the way the first year so you can spend the remainder of your college career focussing on classes for your major. Overall, I would high recommend that you attend the University of Tennessee!
Great for these types of students Personally, I think UTK is great for any type of student. Since I've been here I have seen and met so many different types of people on and off campus. Before I moved up here I thought I was going to hate it, but it wasn't until I got into the flow of things that i realized I was actually enjoying college. Big schools aren't for everyone but you won't know unless you give it a shot.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Coming to college, I was apprehensive of the school work load and managing it with my social life. I am pleased to say that as I have already completed my first semester here at UT and now beginning my second one, I enjoy it! I am definitely learning alot during my classes, but more importantly I am learning much about myself. College makes you become an independent and responsible person.
Am enjoying being here I. Love. Knoxville! I absolutely love being in college and in Knoxville. I did not come to college with my BFF's and so my first semester was a struggle, but push through it and you will reap the benefits! Knoxville has so much to offer from the big city feel to a smaller town feel. I am in love.
Bang for the buck Although UT is not too expensive for in-staters, it is not cheap! The hope scholarship helps a bunch and applying for other scholarships as well. Out-of-state is pretty much like every other school.. Expensive. Bottom line. Apply for scholarships everywhere, because UT's tuition is similar to any state schools
Tips for prospective students As much as you have heard it: Resist procrastination. We all want a plentiful social life and that cannot happen without the studies coming first. Get your studies out of the way, THEN have fun.
Make smart decisions: College is a place where people decide what path in life they will choose. Be wise in making decisions because you never know how your choices will affect your future.
And also, have FUN! (safe fun, of course)Great for these types of students Open to new things!
Enthusiastic: College is awesome! Get excited for UT because out football and basketball seasons are amazing and you've really got to LOVE the VOLS!
Motivated: It's easy to get bogged down with all your classes but you have got to stay positive and motivated. Study with classmates, it helps.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much at Tennessee. You have so many different teaching styles that you will experience and eventually you'll learn which one you can adapt to more to learn more efficiently. I personally don't like lectures. It makes it to where i take less from the class then i should have but there are all kinds of ways to deal with things like that. Tennesee has SO many resources available to help you learn. Things like academic coaches to point you in the right direction to S.I. tutoring in almost every class you might have. You might struggle a little at first with the transition from high school where things are somewhat being spoon-fed to you to having to be more independent and do things more for yourself. But trust me, you're not the only one. Almost every freshman goes through that, and you'll figure out what you need to do by the end of your first semester.
Am enjoying being here I LOVE being here. It is definitely better than high school in so many ways. Everyone is so nice, and people say that all the time but it really is true. I didn't like not having my close friends go to the same school as me, but when you get on campus, everyone wants to be your friend. Even if you're a shy person, you'll feel so comfortable here. You'll learn that unlike high school, anyone and everyone will talk to you even about the most random things. Ask questions. You won't feel weird. Everyone does it, and that is another thing that helps people be comfortable at UT and makes them enjoy it. The campus is really pretty and we defintiely have one of the best football stadiums!! It's really nice and the student section is fun! Anyone will love coming to UT and enjoy being there.
Bang for the buck If you're an in-state student, the tuition really isn't that bad; especially compared to a school like Vanderbilt or Duke. UT is reasonably priced and still is a highly ranked univeristy as far as academics go. They have great programs available for almost any major. Try to get scholarships though!! It's always better to go to school for free no matter where you go!
Great for these types of students UT is great for anyone! It has so many great programs. The nursing program is one of the top programs! It's really competitive. UT also has great one's for psychology, business, journalism, etc. Basically anything.

Categories Rating Comments Academic Rigor I have learned allot referring to academics as well as myself since the semester has started. I have realized that you CANNOT take time for granted! Please use it wisely! Also, college is indeed what you make it you have to learn how to balance as well as set your priorities in order (academics first).
Am enjoying being here So far my freshman year has been great! I've met some really good friends and we do the most random things from having late night movie nights til 5am, playing hide N go seek with random people, & taking trips to the mall or the strip. If you surround yourself with people who you can be yourself around (please be yourself no need to pretened) you will definitely have fun! Also, there's always things going on around campus and many orgs to join, currently I am involved in two orgs and I work so nothing is impossible just learn to balance.
Bang for the buck UT is definitely affordable when you work hard and receive scholarships and grants. It is not easy so you MUST work hard to maintain your grades so that you are good to go during your time here at UT.
Tips for prospective students If you work hard in high school and can show that you are well rounded you should be fine. Also, determination and persistence is key. Give admissions a call to check on your status or send an email.
Great for these types of students -Students who are determined to be successful
-Self motivated students because you can easily get distracted and disappointed
-Students that can work hard first and have fun
-Students who want to meet all sorts of people (networking is key)Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Freshman and Sophomore classes are basically a repeat of general high school courses. You have to put in some effort, but with a basic understanding of the material, its easy to succeed.
Am enjoying being here Definitely DO NOT commute. Live on campus. Fighting for commuting parking spaces is nerve racking and time consuming. I do not enjoy having to arrive at school two hours early to grab a parking space. Also, being a student here requires lots of uphill walking and stairs. The University does offer great resources like free tutoring, free exercise classes, and free buses.
Bang for the buck Normal dorm rooms are gross, so try to get the apartment style dorm rooms if you can. Great Library. Some class buildings are in good shape, but most of them are old and seating is generally uncomfortable. Huge classes, so if you do not thrive in lecture classes you may want to try a smaller school. Overall, UT gives you lots of free services that are great. They will rent you laptops and ipods for free as well.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to get active. This campus is very demanding.
Great for these types of students Students who thrive in large group environments, enjoy learning on their own, and like to be social.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Every professor I have encountered at UT has been more than qualified for their position and successful at relaying his or her knowledge to students. I have taken 34 total hours at UT and have learned a huge amount in every one of them. Although many opportunities have to be specifically sought out by students, they are available to all and can greatly enrich the academic experience.
Am enjoying being here The campus is large, but the academic and social communities are varied and accessible. Both the students at UT and the people of Knoxville are open and friendly, and this is very obvious in the campus atmosphere.
Bang for the buck For less than $17,000 a year, UT provides extremely good professors, great facilities and many free special campus events, from concerts by well-known musicians and talks by politicians and academics to debates and movie screenings. The research and study-abroad opportunities are tremendous and extremely accessible to all students.
Tips for prospective students Come prepared to be faced with a large campus, which, although filled with friendly people, can be very scary. Take a first-year seminar to meet people; it's a great way to make study buddies. Carving out your niche will enhance your college experience, both academically AND socially.
Great for these types of students If you're the type of student that enjoys learning with and from a variety of people, you'll really enjoy UT. If you're driven and enjoy seeking out opportunities for yourself and working one-on-one with professors, you'll find yourself at home here.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The campus is beautiful.
The teacher's assistants are very helpful.
The professors have flexible office hours.Tips for prospective students Get to know where your classes are before the first day of class. Have a general idea of your way around campus.
Academic Rigor Most of the classes are difficult but, they are set up that way so that you can learn. If you just go with the flow you will learn more than those that complain about the difficulty of the class.
Dorm Life There is always something fun going on. You can also generally find a study group in your dorm that is for your subject of study.
Food and Dining The taste of most of the food is good. The best part is how there is always something open 24/7.
What to do for fun Like I said the campus is beautiful, so my favorite thing to do is pick a shady spot and read. Also, there is always some kind of pick up game of any kind of sport going on somewhere, you just have to look around.
Great for these types of students Anyone!
Clubs and Activities If you look around the campus you will find activities going on all the time, and there is usually free food!
Greek Life Don't do it!!
Campus Safety I hardly ever see the campus police but, I know they are there and I have not needed them. It is pretty safe.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee is an amazing school. The campus is beautiful and the environment is quite diverse. I wouldn't trade going here for anything in the world.
Tips for prospective students I would suggest for future students to become acclimated to studying on a daily basis. So many students here fail classes because they don't stay on top of their work and what is expected of them.
Academic Rigor I've always been a believer that school is only as difficult as you make it. Here at UT students are all given the opportunity to make great grades, but it is what they make of it. It can get difficult at times, but as long as you communicate with you professors then all of the work is manageable.
Dorm Life I was fortunate to stay in one of the best dorms on campus (in my opinion). I stayed in Clement Hall and had my own bathroom that i shared with my roommate and suite mates. I liked it because it made taking showers and going to the restroom simpler. I never had to worry about waiting on anyone. I also enjoyed the dorm because there were always activities thrown for the residents. The only down fall of staying there and any dorm on campus for that matter is the overall temperature of the dorms when the seasons change. Sometimes it can be extremely cold outside and the heat can't be turned on until a specific time in the year and vice versa for the summer.
Food and Dining The campus food isn't that bad, but it also isn't the best either. On campus they have a Mcalister's, Subway, Petros, Chick Fil A, Pizza Hut, Ihop, and i believe that's pretty much it. If you are a normal person with a normal appetite then you will eventually get tired of eating the same thing everyday.
What to do for fun The school is always filled with fun things to do. Once you get involved and get to know people then you will ALWAYS have something to do. It's our of the ordinary to not have something to do while school is in session. But when there is nothing to do, it is completely boring. Fortunately, that happens once every blue moon.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus An unusual tradiation would be Torch Night, which is where the senior class basically welcomes the incoming freshman into the university. An unsual location on campus would be Ray's Place. It's a place on the hill that sells homecooked food to eat. Many people don't know about it because everyone doesn't have to take classes on the hill, but it has pretty decent food and I think anyone should check it out.
Great for these types of students UT is great for students that are trying to get a great education, but have fun. College should be the best time of your life, and UT is a college that makes it just that.
Clubs and Activities There are a plethora of organizations and clubs to join. You can find them all on UTK's website.
Greek Life Greek life is pretty cool. Whether you're black or white it seems that every Greek organization is on campus except for a few. But the main ones are present.
Campus Safety The campus is pretty much safe. I'm a girl and I've never felt at danger while there. The only place that has some problems is the fort sanders area. There is ALWAYS something going on but it isn't technically on campus. With that being said, it isn't best for people to walk around the surrounding areas of the campus by themselves.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This university is absolutely spectacular and wonderful. There are so many opportunities here, academically and socially. UT feels a lot like home and I can honestly say I adjusted to college life swiftly and easily with help from both staff and my peers alike.
Tips for prospective students My tips for prospective students would be to ATTEND YOUR ORIENTATION! It may seem unnecessary, but it does help you to understand where everything is on campus, which is important because UT is a large school. Once you know where everything is, you feel a lot more comfortable as opposed to just moving in and being completely and utterly lost. There are also tons of opportunities you can utilize from counseling when you need to talk to someone to tutoring if you need help academically. If you feel like you're in a rut, visit these places, they will help you get out of your dorm and on the fast track to recovery.
Academic Rigor Classes at UT aren't extremely difficult (well, I assume higher level mathematics courses and science classes are, but I am not in those courses because they aren't my thing), but they are designed to be challenging and to make you think. Nearly all the professors I have had have been professional and wonderful. You can easily talk to them when you need to discuss how your grades are or if you're having trouble with the class material. I am confident they are among the best and they prove it.
Dorm Life I had a bit of a bad experience with my first roommate, but I stayed with her all year up until the last month and a half where I moved in with a good friend of mine. My advice is don't let your roommate walk all over you, stick up for yourself, and if the situation isn't working do not try to force it to. Sort it out with the help of a RA or the hall director, they will gladly help, it is their job. Living on campus was a choice I do not regret, as it's very convenient and you can get places faster than having to find public transport to campus every time you have a class. Plus, you can see your friends whenever you want. They're just a walk away.
Food and Dining The food is not bad, but it can get a bit old rather quickly. The cafeterias have their days where everything sucks, but for the most part everything is edible and you can utilize your meal plan here and eat all you could possibly want. If it's getting old, you can always go to the strip and get something from a local restaurant or head to Subway or Einstein bros.
What to do for fun There's a lot to do on campus for fun. There is almost always some event somewhere, like a guest speaker to listen to or a free concert. If there's not, there's always people playing Frisbee in the amphitheatre or hula hooping. You can also go to the library and enjoy some time alone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On campus, we have The Rock, which is a giant rock that students are allowed to paint messages on. During game season, you can see works of art all over this rock and messages (both appropriate and not).
Campus Safety I feel as if campus is extremely safe. It is patrolled by both the Knoxville Police and the campus police departments respectively, and there are emergency phones placed around campus in case you don't feel safe and need an escort late at night.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences UTK has a great atmosphere! The classes are large for those that are looking for that type of university. Although the classes are large you will always find staff that are knowledgeable and helpful!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you want to come to a university where your first two years will be spent in mostly large classes. It will not be until your 3rd year that you will begin to get into small, more personal classes. Try and get involved on campus your first year. It is not hard, because they have so many events every week. The more you are involved at UTK the better your grades will be.
Academic Rigor The classes are tough, but not impossible. You will have a few professors who have a language barrier problem, but if you talk to them one-on-one you will find them more manageable. There will always be tough classes at any university and UTK is no different.
Dorm Life UTK's residence halls are a great place to live. You have a wide range from traditional and suite style to apartment style. You cannot live in the apartments your first year, but it is a great place to be your last few years. I personally propose that first years live in the Traditional Style. Yes, you have a community bathroom, but you will get to know so many more of your neighbors than if you lived in suite style. And honestly, no one bothers you in the bathrooms at traditional buildings because they want the same in return.
Food and Dining The food and dining at UTK is about what I would presume to be average for a large university. The food is okay at the places, and I'm alright with this because they have to serve such a large amount of students. There are many different restaurant chains on campus if you prefer that over the cafeteria, but they can be a little bit pricey. There is also the strip, which is located right off of campus, that has many different restaurant choices.
What to do for fun Right off of campus is the strip. It has multiple places to eat and a few bars if you want that. A few blocks east of campus is downtown. There are many things to do there such as, the movies, live theaters, restaurants, bars, and historical places to tour.
Bang for the buck I feel as though I am getting my money's worth here at UTK. I am taking classes that are progressing my knowledge and I am also making lasting friendships.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are many traditions here at UTK. It is one of the things this campus prides itself in. One of my favorites is The Rock. Anytime you want, students can go down to the rock and paint whatever they want on it. It gives students a chance to blow off steam, express their emotions, or voice their opinions on matters around campus.
Great for these types of students UTK is great for students who are more extroverted than introverted. Don't get me wrong when I say that though. Introverted people will still fit in here, but it might be harder for them to make friend the first year since it is such a large community. It can be easy to get lost in the crowd if you don't try and stand out.
Clubs and Activities There are many many clubs and activities to do on campus! This place is full of them! You can do anything from club sports, residence halls association, SGA, to church groups.
Greek Life There are many different Greek communities on campus. If that is what you are into, it will not be hard your first year to find one that you like and rush.
Campus Safety Campus safety is a major issue to the university. With Knoxville being such a large area there will always be crime. The more people you pack into a place the larger the crime rate will be. To combat that UTK has put up Blue Lights. These lights are spaced evenly throughout the campus to ensure that wherever you are standing you can see one glowing. If you ever feel unsafe you can call a UTPD officer to assist you or a bus to take you back to your place. If there is an emergency you can press the red button and an officer will be there within 30 seconds or less.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The college has a great atmosphere that helps promote easy learning. Many of the professors are research oriented and their classes reflect that. I also think that many of the professors challenge real life critical thinking in their lectures.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you study and don't procrastinate just because your professor gave you an extension. Use your resources wisely and widely, and lastly find a buddy that you get along with in your class. This helps when it comes time for exams and mini tests to help ease the stress of college.
Academic Rigor So many students are serious about going to class at this University, it's rare to find an empty class room, in fact there have been many times that students show up for class fifteen minutes before it starts.
Dorm Life I heard dorm life was great aside from the crazy fire alarms, many people are respectful of others and finding and making friends is easy in this environment.
Food and Dining The UC is great and has many selections of food. Also many of the restaurants in the downtown area allow the use of the diner dollars that parents put their children on with the meal plans.
What to do for fun There is always something going on at the school or even downtown, ranging from concerts like Volapalooza to the famous UT Football games. The restaurants close to college offer trivia nights and during breaks the school usually hosts visits from scholars and movies.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a rock by the track that, I kid you not, get's painted over at least three times a day. It's a crazy tradition and you will love to join in. We also have our great Rocky Top song that you will learn in a day, I promise.
Campus Safety Campus safety is incredible, we have alerts, blue lights, and patrolling officers. If you do not feel safe on walking to your car or dorm there is a 1-800 number you can call and one of the officers will escort you to your vehicle safely.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences At the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, life is what you make of it. You can party and live it up, or you can be a part of ground breaking research and create a better world. Being a SEC school provides a good opportunity but being enrolled in Tennessee's flagship and only land-grant research college is a great opportunity.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! Go to class, and master even the basics - you can not begin to understand how much this will help down the line. At UT you have an unbelievably capable faculty who mostly are more than available and would like to get to know you as well as help you as much as they can. Even general education courses are taught by professors that can offer insight as well as opportunities. Being a SEC school athletic events are fun and great ways to meet new people and life on campus is great. With that said however keep school your first priority! Get involved and explore opportunities through other students, professors, and advisors.
Academic Rigor At UT life is what you make it, and that is especially true with your academics. You can take 12 hours a semester and not graduate on time, or work 20 hours a week on top a 17+ hour semester. What you take and when you take it also makes the difficulty change greatly. Balance is key, try and take something that interests you and something that challenges you. If you sign up for a easy semester, you will end up taking a semester that will make you question your sanity and intelligence the following semester. All the courses here have the possibility to be incredibly hard or fairly simple. Some general education requirements may whip you and some upper level courses you may laugh at, but still take everything seriously - it pays off later.
Dorm Life When you first move into the dorms life is amazing. Everyone is ready to meet new people, and everything is new. You won't even care how old and cheaply constructed the dorms are. Everything is so close, and with a meal plan it's like eating free all the time. However after winter break and being reminded what real food and comfort is, the dorms begin to look like what they really are. But don't worry after it gets warm everyone is outside in presidential court yard again and life is great. The RA's are pretty cool and usually relaxed about most rules. Also a little tip, cover the air ducts to keep the dorm circulated air out so you wont get sick when the viruses and all begin. Also you better get a room fan, the AC isn't great, and the heat stays on until late spring.
Food and Dining Getting a meal plan is great, it's like eating for free. Use your meals too and save your dinning dollars till the end of the spring semester because by then the cafeteria food that was great in the fall begins to get worse and it starts to all look the same. Also, if you have morning classes I would suggest getting breakfast, it's not the best but it is good and will keep you alert and ready for class.
What to do for fun There are lots of groups and things to do on campus, especially as a freshman. There's the TREC which has a outdoor pool, workout facility with one of everything. Also, HPER (Next to Trec above track field - called hyper) is also a work out facility that is less crowded. On the other entrance of HPER there is a rock wall where you can rent shoes and everything. There's the Outdoor Program which functions out of the TREC facility that goes camping, backpacking, kayaking, and all that good stuff. Also you can rent outdoor equipment for super cheap, some stuff is even free to rent. If that isn't you there are so many clubs and organizations from religious groups, student activist groups, and of course greek life.
Bang for the buck It's an SEC school so there are tons of great athletic events to go to, including saturday football in Neyland Stadium. The streets on campus all the way up through the fort are orange and white!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The best tradition by far is painting the Rock. Grab some spray paint and some friends and paint it up! Also be sure to watch the Vol Walk at least once - it's the parade around campus before the football games with the band, coaches and players, and lots more.
Great for these types of students If you enjoy being social as well as being a student looking for a great education and opportunity. Life at UT is what you make it and there is a niche for really any type of student.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs and groups it's mind boggling. If you have an interest - no matter what it is - there is a group or club for you to join and get into.
Greek Life While I'm not greek, some of my friends and both of my siblings are. Some greeks are obnoxious about being such and like to cause a scene and make all greek groups. But really a lot of them are fine with whoever. Also greek life is really large here if you are interested in doing it, yet it isn't like some SEC colleges where you won't be able to find a fun and interesting group of people if you don't.
Campus Safety On campus there are blue lights where you can hit them and a police officer will get there asap. They're also in sight of each other so if you feel you're being stalked or chased you can tag the buttons in a line and the police will get to the next one. With that said there are incidents still, and they will be sent out in emails and txt alerts to keep students safe. The Fort (Fort Sanders - the area across Cumberland aka The Strip) does get dangerous at late night mostly due to the low income nature of the area and large amount of homeless persons. The saying goes what happens in the Fort tonight will be in the Email tomorrow! Just don't walk alone really is the biggest thing off of campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee is a cost-competitive and accommodating institution of higher education. UT offers degrees in almost any field you can think of with many campus traditions and student groups. In addition, the resources and programs available to undergraduates is astounding. If you want to do research, study abroad, or get involved with the community, through UT you can make it happen.
Tips for prospective students There is so much to do and be a part of here, the worst thing you can do is be a recluse and not get involved. Additionally, go ahead and soak up all the traditions UT has to offer, whether sporting events, Greek life, or a multitude of other things. Being active is the way to go.
Academic Rigor It really depends on the college and major. The business, architecture, nursing and engineering programs are all challenging in their own right. In the end, I feel all programs and colleges here prepare you for post college life.
Dorm Life I particularly liked living in the dorm honestly so I stayed two years. I lived on the ground floor of Reese, it was quiet, close to food, and wasn't far from friends and classes. Dorms are dorms however, there will usually always be something wrong.
Food and Dining I'm not a picky eater, so I think the food here is pretty good. They've added new restaurants, remodeled existing food courts, in a focused effort to make it better.
What to do for fun Always people to meet, sporting events are tons of fun, intramurals, some clubs/bars within walking distance to campus, house parties, chill on campus, go to larger parks nearby, go to pool, socialize at restaurants and food courts. Plenty to do in the city, the mall, Market Square & Old City are fun to go to as well.
Bang for the buck I think UT is has great value. Big school atmosphere is a smaller setting. Plenty of programs and opportunities.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Painting the Rock is pretty fun to do.
Great for these types of students I believe everyone can find their niche here.
Clubs and Activities Honestly, too many to list. There's a ton of Greek life, professional societies and clubs here on campus.
Greek Life Pretty big here, but UT is big enough if you aren't into it its not a big deal.
Campus Safety On campus its pretty safe, however, UT is still near a city and things tend to happen a little ways from campus.

Tips for prospective students always study here or you will get behind in your classes
Dorm Life The dorm life is good if you stay in an apartment or clement hall, but not all have the same qualities as the ones i stated.
Food and Dining food is ok but it can be alot better in my opinion.
What to do for fun you can party, but dont get caught drunk or there are serious consequences.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I was very impressed with the campus and student life on campus. The university is prime real estate in regards to out of the classroom activities. The student body was very enthusiastic and friendly during the tour.
Tips for prospective students Don't forget, you're going to college for the degree, not the parties. Ask questions! Be aware that it is a highly populated school, and therefore it loses alot of personalization and class.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee is an outstanding school to gain an education. During my first year at the school, I have learned many things and have also matured a vast amount. I am proud that I will be able to call UT my alma mater.
Tips for prospective students Go into the year with an open mind and be nice to people, you'll easily gain a lot of friendships. Get to know your suite mates, you'll more than likely love them, like I do mine.
Academic Rigor Some classes can be difficult and some can be easy. Just like it is at every university. Dependent upon your teacher, depends on whether or not you'll enjoy the class. All of the classes assign the same work for the most part. Some of the teachers are foreign, which makes them hard to understand.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms will always be one of my most memorable experiences. No matter what anyone tells you, or what you hear, don't listen. I have made many many many friendships by living in the dorm and meeting people, however I feel as if it is a one and done experience. It's good for a year, but more than that would just be too much. There isn't enough room to live completely comfortable for over a year.
Food and Dining The dining is ok. UT could use some renovation in this area, but they know that and are trying to change it. The dining halls repeat their food selections more than not, but the brand name places are always fine and have good deals most of the time.
Greek Life GO GREEK. Best decision of my life.
Campus Safety Campus safety is on point. There are stations all around campus that you can push and UT police officer will come and escort you to where you need to go if you feel unsafe or you can call the T-Link at any hour and they will do the same.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences As a transfer student, I would give the University of Tennessee at Knoxville a 9 out of 10 on the rating scale. The location, academics and extracurricular activities offered are all as ideal as I could imagine they could be.The only problem I have run into while here is with the sub-par advisers.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! The school is quite large in number, so being involved helps make it smaller and helps you make friends with common interests. Also, make sure you talk to more than just your adviser when it comes to picking classes and teachers. Utilize other teachers, peers in the same major and online teacher reviews.
Academic Rigor For my major, Animal Science Pre-Vet, academics are quite challenging, but only because we are planning to carry on to veterinary school. I think there are easy and hard classes and it all depends on your major and the teacher. Utilize peer teacher reviews online!
Dorm Life I never lived in the dorms at UT, but I had many friends in the dorms and they loved it.
Food and Dining There are lots of choices from Asian, American, breakfast, pizza, home cooking and salads/wraps.
What to do for fun Downtown Knoxville with movie theaters, clubs, bars and restaurants is only a walk away. There are also two parks in the area with running/walking trails, tennis courts and a play ground. There are frequently concerts in the area and the gym on campus always has available outdoor trips. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area is also only 40 minutes away where there is tons to do.
Bang for the buck The school is pretty expensive, so apply for scholarships as much as possible, but it is worth it in my opinion
Great for these types of students Any! I am not much of a partier, so I thought I wouldn't find much to do, but there are always things to do in Knoxville and there are so many different types of people to meet.
Clubs and Activities There are an enormous amount of clubs and activities to get involved in at UT and in the Knoxville area in a great variety. I think it'd be hard for someone to not fit in somewhere.
Campus Safety There are emergency centers placed throughout campus where you can push a button to contact a police escort for any late night. UT police and Knoxville police are pretty active and usually close.

Dorm Life They have two main types of dorm rooms, and dorms are a great way to meet new people and make friends if you're new.
Food and Dining This school has a lot of places that you can eat, and two places are open 24 hours, so you will always have a place to eat.
Clubs and Activities UT offers a variety of clubs and activities. You wouldn't imagine all of the clubs they have. For example, they have a cardboard club, which is where students play card games and board games, which I found very interesting.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee is an excellent place to be a student and a citizen. I love the campus, the city, and the atmosphere that it embodies. I would change nothing about the University of Tennessee.
Tips for prospective students My tips would be:
1. Do your research on the teachers you choose.
2. Don't underestimate the difficulty of your assignments.
3. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.Academic Rigor The University of Tennessee does a wonderful job of pushing students in the area of academia. The majority of the professors take their jobs very seriously and strive to enrich the minds of their students.
Dorm Life Dorm life is NOT as bad as people make it out to be. Especially here at the University of Tennessee. I love living in my dorm. Everyone on my floor is nice and they are all respectful. I am pretty sure the majority of us leave our doors unlocked at all times.
Food and Dining The University of Tennessee has a broad selection of dining on campus. My personal favorite is in my own dorm, Morrill Hall. It is very close and convenient. It offers very good food. I have never had a bad experience in any of the dining halls that I eat in.
What to do for fun What is there not to do for fun?! It's Knoxville. Knoxville in itself is an amazing city to live in and have activities to do. There never seems to be a dull moment whether you're on or off campus. I personally enjoy going to the greenway and World's Fair Park to hang out with my friends.
Bang for the buck Not going to lie, the University of Tennessee is quite expensive and can have its flaws. However, I would not want to go anywhere else.
Great for these types of students ANY type of students.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences There are a lot of good classes and teachers- most professors truly care about how much the students learn, and classes are actually interesting. Plus attending the sporting events (especially football) is a lot of fun. Between the academic and non-academic aspects of student life, I love it here.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of the campus's resources and professor's office hours. There is some free tutoring, and having a professor know your name and how hard you work (especially when you are in large lecture halls) can help you.
Academic Rigor You can't skip classes and assignments and expect to get A's, but if you work to get good grades, you will probably succeed.
Food and Dining UT has a lot of great options for dining, with food that actually tastes good. But it is annoying that a few of the dining halls close on weekends, and dining hours for almost all places change on long weekends. Students who have to stay over a long weekend may have to make other plans for dining on these occasions.
What to do for fun Football. Sports. UTOP (Outdoor Program). Movie nights. There are many things you can do for fun around here.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee is a very large and diverse campus where there are plenty of opportunities to get involved on campus. It is listed as one of the top ranking research institutions in the region and is highly ranked among the nation. UTK is full of students who love their school and are not afraid to show it.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to own lots of ORANGE apparel to show school spirit. UT is famous for their school spirit. BIG ORANGE COUNTRY! GO VOLS!
Academic Rigor UTK has a very good Engineering department. Although its rigorous, you will be sure to be prepared for a full-time job. The University of Tennessee is also known for many other achievements in academia.
Dorm Life All dorms are very habitable and can quickly become your new home except Andy Holt, I don't advise living there because it's an older building.
The residential staff is welcoming and understanding.Food and Dining The food is delicious. It's not your typical cafeteria, it's like a feast/buffet. The food choices are almost unlimited and they kitchen staff serves food for everyone of different tastes.
What to do for fun What isn't there to do fun. Tons of amphitheaters, free space, and sports. Don't forget to mention THE STRIP, part of Cumberland Ave. where there are plenty venues for eateries, gas, and misc. goods.
Bang for the buck It is a pretty affordable college for and SEC school, especially if you live in Tennessee already.
Clubs and Activities UT is a diverse campus full of people with different cultures, ideals and interest. Students are encouraged to get inVOLved on campus so there is a little something for everyone at UT.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee is an amazing school! The staff is definitely helpful in helping students succeed. UT also offers a wide variety of programs, giving students many opportunities.
Tips for prospective students Go to class and do all assigned homework. If you do not understand something, ask your instructor. They will be more than happy to help you out.
Academic Rigor The work load gets pretty tough. Sometimes you will have multiple assignments due in one day. Do not procrastinate, and you will be fine.
Dorm Life I personally do not reccomend dorms with community style bathrooms. Apart from that, the resident advisors are very helpful with any problems you might have. As far as the condition of the dorms, I would rate them as fair.
Food and Dining The food is very gross. I rarely use my meal plan. I recommend really thinking about it before you sign up for a meal plan, because you might just end up buying groceries, like me.
What to do for fun For fun, I usually go swimming at the aquatic center. They even have an indoor pool for cold weather. Zumba is also another great thing to do!
Bang for the buck Tuition is a little bit pricey. I have personally never had any major complaint with an instructor though.
Great for these types of students Although UT is branded as a party school, I do not party and still enjoy it. There are plenty of students who do not party who attend this university.
Clubs and Activities There are more than 400+ clubs and other activities that people may get involved with!
Campus Safety At orientation, they will make a big deal about the blue light phones. They give you the impression that they have a GPS locator type device in them. They don't; you have to inform them of where you are.

Tips for prospective students Apply early and take advantage of all the clubs offered here on campus!
Academic Rigor It honestly just depends on the teacher you have, but overall it isn't too difficult.
Dorm Life Dorm life is mostly based on whom you live with and how you choose to feel about it. Some of the dorms are not as spacious compared to others on campus.
Food and Dining The provide a wide arrangement of food through the various meal plans offered.
What to do for fun Any sporting event! They give out many different spirit items ranging from foam fingers, t-shirts, to pom poms. Considering this is a division 1 school, sports are kind of a big deal. Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee is a large, beautiful campus with myriad opportunities. There are clubs, sports, academics, and events for people of all interests and backgrounds. I couldn't hope for more out of a college experience.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to walk, because the campus is large and hilly -- you will get plenty of exercise. The most important aspect of college, however, is time management. Plan your schedule wisely, be responsible, and you'll do fine.
Academic Rigor The determining factor for how difficult a class will be is the professor. The key is to find a professor that you can understand well, one who is willing to be understanding toward you and communicate, yet one who is also capable of challenging you and helping you to learn.
Dorm Life There is plenty of space in the dorms, as well as many great people to meet. I wouldn't recommend staying in a dorm past your freshman year, but they definitely offer many learning and life experiences, as well as fond memories to look back on.
Food and Dining The dining options are fairly average, but the cafeterias offer decently good food and are convenient if you have a meal plan (which is required of all freshmen and students in dorms).
What to do for fun Head over to the TRECS for great workout equipment and tons of fun group exercise classes, go swimming, ride your bike around campus, walk along the Strip (Cumberland Avenue), and just explore!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It's said that if you walk over the seal on Pedestrian Walkway, you won't graduate in four years. Bad luck!
Great for these types of students Aspiring sorority or fraternity members, anthropology degree seekers, law students.
Greek Life The University of Tennessee has a very large and active Greek life.
Campus Safety Campus is large, yet very safe. There are emergency blue-light towers stationed all over the campus and the bus will always pick you up if you call.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Overall, parking is the biggest pain. The faculty and staff are truly committed to each and every student. I believe, it's the greatest university around.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you stay ahead of all your academic advising schedules, so you can be able to add all the classes you need
Academic Rigor Provides opportunities that challenge the student's way of thinking.
Dorm Life Dorms are what you can expect, but the campus is rebuilding and renovating several buildings.
Food and Dining The food options are spectacular. There's a wide array of restaurants on campus and the campus is very close to the strip, which offers even more food options.
What to do for fun There's so many things to do. You could go to TRECS and workout. You could go to a sporting event and watch our world famous football and women's basketball teams. You can even just walk around and enjoy the scenery of the mountains miles away.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences -Preparing me for the real word: 8 out of 10
-Professor engagement: 8 out of 10
-How active campus students are: 10 out of 10Tips for prospective students You really need to study all of your classes if you can right after class is over. That really helped me remember the curriculum in class. You also need to engage in class, right or wrong answer.
Academic Rigor Unlike high school, your professors are not all in the same building, so they are not able to communicate with each other and let this one or that one know when they assign a project. You may end up with two or three assigned projects, each one harder than the next, due on the same days. Don't procrastinate.
Dorm Life I knew who my roommate was because we went to high school together. We redecorated our room and the space was amazing. Just have fun but don't get stupid in the dorm. You are only renting it, so there are rules that come along.
Food and Dining I am one person who enjoys food. I hear people complaining about missing home cooked meals. Anything is fine with me. FYI, go visit Southern Kitchen.
What to do for fun There's lots to do around campus. If you are ever bored you better have a good reason, like rain or snow. The weather is very unpredictable. For the most part there is a gym and there are outdoor and indoor activities that go on everyday. I do not know of a day that went by with out receiving an email about an event that i could attend on campus.
Bang for the buck All I can say is that once you're here you will not want to go anywhere else.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The only thing that I can think of is that me and my roommate would get crunk before we went out to the club or a party, even before we hit the gym.
Great for these types of students Hodges Library- for those study gurus who have all nighters and do not want to disturb their roommate or want piece and quiet.
T-Recs- great for those who love their fitness or just want to workout
The Strip- great for those who get tired of campus food and want something differentClubs and Activities Basically just read what was written under the what to do for fun tab. You will not be disappointed. If you think it, it either exists already or you can get a group of friends and make it happen.
Greek Life The Greeks on campus are pretty cool. You see them around every so often. In the fall they give step shows and other performances.
Campus Safety The UT Police are right down the road. I have not heard of anyone dying. They could be better, but it is the real world and you have to take care of yourself first. They are there for assistance. Just be smart and aware of your surroundings.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This is a very large campus, but it has plenty of resources. The price of everything can be overwhelming but you eventually get used to it, for the most part. The classes are usually very large.
Tips for prospective students You do not have to buy every book for all of your classes, most professors don't require you to use them. Try looking into staying off campus, you save lots of money.
Academic Rigor The classes are very challenging depending on what you take. We always are one of the last schools to go on any kind of break because we always have plenty of work to do.
Dorm Life Some of the dorms are nicer than others e.g larger rooms, more desk space, but you may have to give up on a private bathroom. If you are into community bathrooms you will do just fine. RA's are usually very nice, and you can meet lots of new people on your floor and in your building.
Food and Dining Campus cafeteria food is usually fresh the first couple of weeks after school starts but after that you can pretty much give up on that. They serve the same dried flavorless foods. Luckily we have lots of restaurant options on campus such as I HOP, Subway, Quizznos, McAlisters, etc.
What to do for fun If your looking for something to do there is usually always a football or basketball game to go to. Or you could go workout at the T-REC, study in the library or just hang out in presidential courtyard.
Bang for the buck You pay way more than what you get. You are basically paying for the name and a pretty campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You can paint the rock at any point your career at the university.
Great for these types of students This school is great for Tennessee football fans! Also good for those who are seriously considering a career in the science field.
Clubs and Activities There are almost an unlimited amount of groups and clubs that you can join. If you can think of it there is a club for it and if not you are always welcome to create one yourself.
Greek Life If Greek life is something that you are into, the opportunity is available. The groups are large and usually very known around campus.
Campus Safety There are not very many accidents that happen on campus, but we still have UT police that patrol the campus. There are also blue lights all around campus that you can press in case of an emergency.

Academic Rigor the university of tennessee is a top 50 public school nationally. we are striving to be in the top 25 which means classes are more strenuous and challenging, which is good for both the university and its students.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences i am from a small town and came here for the best academic opportunities and it has been a worth everything i have done to get here. although it is a large school and associated with parties, it is also a haven for the true scholars and academically focused student. the university of tennessee has something for everyone.
Tips for prospective students i would advise future students to dual enroll in smaller colleges or have some college course experience before coming to the university so the transition is not overwhelming. i also advise applying for the scholarships that the university offers and take advantage of the programs at the school to build your resume.
Academic Rigor academic rigor depends on your atnicipated major and amount of hours taken each semester. any class may be difficult and truly depends on personal preferences of classes. if students are willing to focus and give each class the hours of work it requires to understand the content, the difficulty of the class vanishes as their ability to master the subject grows.
Dorm Life dorm life for me is very easy. i live in presidential court where i can easily access most of campus including educational and recreational buildings. i have a suite style room which provides the privacy that community dorms lack in terms of room and bathroom facilities. the room itself is not very large, but provides enough space for what is truly needed.
Food and Dining there are many dining options at the university. there are several cafeterias with wide selections of food and constantly changing menus. there are also more food options at the university center. there, a variety of fast-food like eateries are gathered and include popular places such as chick-fil-a, petro's, nathan's and several others. smokey's is another dining location in the university center that provides fresh pizza, pasta, tacos, and other well liked campus foods.
What to do for fun knoxville is a very lively city and has something for everyone to partake in on or off campus. on campus, sporting events are the place to be! cheering for the vols is a favorite activity of almost every student. student section seating is very energetic and lets students bond over the love of their school. there are also many extracurricular activities to be involved in with clubs to fit any-one's interests!
Bang for the buck the education at the universirty of tennessee is a worth every penny, but luckily, does not require bankruptcy. many financial aid opportunities are given to all students. even with little to no scholarships, the tuition and prices of studying and living comfortably at the university are surprisingly low for the quality that is being paid for.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the university of tennessee is one of the most tradtional schools in the south! many iconic statues and landmarks decorate the campus and traditions are taken seriously. one is of the torch-bearer ceremony where gradating senior welcome the incoming freshmen students to the university. it shows the strong bond, regardless of age, between the students. other traditions include: painting the rock, avoiding to walk across the university seal (to keep from having bad luck here), and chanting rocky top at any time possible!
Great for these types of students this is a university for any type of student. though the large campus and high number of enrolled students may be intimidating, it presents such a wide range of diversity that anyone can feel welcomed coming into. activities and resources are available to accommodate any student with any need.
Clubs and Activities clubs and activities are available for students and all of their interests. from intramural sports to clubs for the arts, everyone can find an activity to be involved in. volunteer activities are highly encouraged for all students to partake in. one that i enjoy participating in is clinic-vols. it is an organization where students go and volunteer to serve as nurses at local elementary schools. basic red-cross training is required and provided for those wanting to join and is very rewarding to get involved in the community through the university.
Campus Safety although precaution is best used when being in any public area, the campus safety at the university is a top priority. the school cannot control the outside hapenings of a bustling city, but informs the students of any potentially alarming news to better prepare the students. a system, known as the blue-light system, is also installed throughout the campus. it entails many hubs that serve as contact to the university and knoxville police. from stopping a robbery to just asking for a safe ride home, the blue-light system sends a police car right to you with promises of quick arrival. measures like these make me feel very safe around the campus at any time.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Tennessee-Knoxville is definitely a quite vast campus. It is a fun place to be, and there is always something to do. There are more facilities than you can count, but the Professors could be a bit better.
Tips for prospective students Study hard, harder than you ever did in high school, and do not procrastinate! Procrastination is the black hole that will suck away your good GPA.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor is quite challenging. The difference from the high school level in a southern school is extensive. The college level at UTK is different and challenging.
Dorm Life I lived in a dorm for one semester and I wasn't too impressed. I stayed at the sports dorm and it was okay and the food was good, but it is extremely overpriced.
Food and Dining The food is delicious but extremely pricey.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do for fun, whether it be working out, playing tennis, basketball, joining an intramural team, getting involved in school clubs, or getting to meet some very interesting people all over campus.
Bang for the buck The buck is quite high, but if you pay attention and work hard then you will get what your looking for. A quality education.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Throughout the semester, students will go paint the rock. The Rock is exactly that, a huge boulder that sits on campus and is constantly spray painted to different things. Whether it be a fraternity brother's birthday or the rivalry football game coming up, the rock expresses the voice of the student body no matter what it is.
Great for these types of students UTK has the potential to be great for anyone. It is a large campus and has many tools at your disposal.
Clubs and Activities The amount of clubs is quite extensive. There are many and a club exists for anyone.
Greek Life The greek life is appealing to some for obvious reasons. At UTK it seems to be a flip of the coin. There are some really great sororities and frats that really help out the campus and community and then there are others that just look to party.
Campus Safety There are hundreds of UTK police officers, they have a fairly quick response time and there are emergency phones all over campus. There have been robberies in the past but that is off campus.

The best thing about UTK is that I don't feel limited at all. I believe that when I finally decide on a major, UTK will be able to fulfill my goals. For all of my classes, my teachers stress going to office hours and tutorial sessions. Not being a math person, the math tutorial center, which is extremely easy to use and open to everyone, has been a huge help. The students working are such a huge help and very willing. There is such a huge list of learning opportunities. Along with learning, study locations has been so important. The library is now my second dorm room. Although I have yet to pull an all-nighter, I have been able to stay there late in order to finish studying.
Am enjoying being here The University of Tennessee Knoxville is home. Yes, we have a large campus, but there are so many different areas to easily get involved in. I see people I know going to every single class who I have met through my different areas of involvement. The campus seems to shrink the more involved I get. I love the spirit we have hear. There are very few places who will wear orange checkerboard overalls proudly. It's great to be a Tennessee Vol!
Bang for the buck Being instate, the University of Tennessee was the best school for the best price. I feel that I am both given a great learning experience and great college life while not burning a hole in my parents' pockets. Luckily, I do not personally pay for my schooling, but I have met many people at school who do. Every dime for schooling is paid for by themselves. Second to the affordable cost is the availability of scholarships. One of my friends who did not receive scholarships for grades did earn them for being a leader. Therefore, to keep this scholarship she was required to take a specific leadership class at school. Furthermore, there is always a way to receive scholarship money.
Tips for prospective students In order to prepare for college, high school students need to learn how to manage their time. While in college, not only do I have to keep up with my grades, but also any extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities are vital because they lead to more opportunities within the school such as SGA or a campus ministry. Also, high school students should shadow people in the fields in which they are interested. I wish I would have done that before college. Luckily, I am figuring out what I want to do and plan to shadow people over the breaks. Therefore, explore your opportunities.
Great for these types of students If a student is looking for good education, unlimited possibilities, high school spirit and campus involvement, the University of Tennessee is the perfect school. Also, if traditions are important then UTK is also ideal. We have traditions like the Torch Bearer, which inspires all students for success, and the VolWalk, where we watch and cheer on the football players before the game as they walk down towards Neyland Stadium. Also, we have great academic programs such as engineering, business, and architecture. Therefore we have a place for the brains, the jocks, the social, and the leaders.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I am learning what I want to do in the future. The academic coaches are lifesavers and are there to do anything they are able to to help you out.
Am enjoying being here I love the campus. Having 4 honors classes, I don't get to see much more than my dorm room and the library with the amount of homework I have, but it's still great.
Bang for the buck You will definately get your money's worth in homework.
Tips for prospective students Do not take more than two honors classes a semester. It will be really hard, and why put yourself under uneeded stress?
Great for these types of students People who like to get inVOLved will fit in great here. People who like diversity will fit in great here. People who like big classes and people who like small classes will fit in great here. Anyone will fit in great here!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Almost all my professors are awesome! All my classes are 30 people or less except my Astronomy lecture and only 75 people ever show up for that (plus if you sit in the front it doesn't feel like the room is that big). If you want a great education UT is the place to be.
Tips for prospective students Apply before November 1! Definitly increases your chances of scholarships.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot UT is most likely the best public school in Tennessee in regard to academics. It has so many programs and is incredibly versatile in helping you shape your degree.
Will enjoy being here UT is a very large school, and its campus is sprawling. Knoxville is somewhat backwoods in comparison to other larger cities like Nashville or Memphis, but it seems fun. So if you're used to the big city, then Knoxville may seem a little lacking. It is a real college town, and apart from school and outdoor activites, there's little else to do.
Bang for the buck Although it arguably provides the best education state-wide and although many national ranking place UT as being one the most affordable universities, it is much more expensive than the other public schools in Tennessee.
Tips for prospective students Do your homework and, if you're a Tennesseean, take advantage of the Governor's School program and the state lottery scholarships. Volunteer and work on your extracurriculars- UT values them more than most schools.
Great for these types of students Likes a great education coupled with an SEC atmosphere

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Every day is a new day filled with new questions and new answers.
Am enjoying being here I love UTK because the campus is so big and I really feel at home here. The staff on campus are nice and helpful.
Bang for the buck Tuition keeps rising, but it's a good thing I love the school so much and that they offer scholarships.
Tips for prospective students I highly suggest taking multiple tours of campus. I also advise everybody to live on campus. It's really cold there in the spring, so don't send your winter clothes home for spring break!!
Great for these types of students If you are trying to come out of your shell, then UTK is the best place for that! If you aren't ready for close contact with strangers on an almost daily basis, then UTK is not the right place for you.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Statistics do not interest me. Graduate level statistics scare me to death, but I'm actually learning stuff that I can use. My field requires me to stay up to date on current research and I can honestly say that what I'm learning will help me do better in my job, which is a whole lot cooler than just passing a test.
Am enjoying being here I have never encountered a system that is so through and through customer oriented. Everyone seems genuinely interested in helping me be successful here.
Bang for the buck I have to pay out of state tuition, so it's a little hard to swallow paying 3x the regular amount. The quality of the faculty, the education and the experience make it much easier to remember why I chose UT

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot They seem to have so many different majors to offer here. And UT has one of the best veterinary programs that I have looked into for future decision making.
Will enjoy being here They seem to have a very friendly campus and many people willing to help those who have questions about the campus and life within.
Bang for the buck For being a student looking out-of-state for the future, they do have seem to have higher prices; however, for the education that they provide, it should certainly be worth it.

Categories Rating Comments Great for these types of students I've never visited this UT before but it seems like a big university that cares about alot of need based scholarships. My ACT score for the first time was a 25 so I'll probably take it again before I apply to UT.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot My classes are really easy to me. As long as you study and you know how much you need to study, you should be fine.
Am enjoying being here The people here are pretty awesome! My RA is awesome, and my residence hall (Massey) is such a family! We had a guy on the eighth floor pass away on his way home for Fall Break, and we all felt the impact.
Bang for the buck UT is definitely the best choice for in-state students, as far as price and quality of education go. It's a really good school (and getting more selective), and it's a really cheap school. What more could you want?
Tips for prospective students Be sure to make the Scholarship application deadline! Everything's a little confusing, and it's easy to overlook things in the rush. Study, study, study! Your GPA is really important, so making okay grades just isn't enough.
Great for these types of students Partiers, good students, dedicated people

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot You will learn a lot at this school. But you have to work hard or you won't.
Am enjoying being here The campus is always so alive. There's always something going on if you know where to look. It's possible to be bored here, but it's very rare.
Bang for the buck Tuition is a lot. So that leaves little to no money to spend on other things.

Am enjoying being here Very easy to meet people. Always something happening. People are for the most part nice and outgoing
Bang for the buck As an instate student, i have gotten in state tuition plus lottery scholarships and other scholarships, and i am paying less than for my private high school. Definitely a good deal for good education.
Tips for prospective students Be open to meeting new people. Get out and get involved and have fun. Meet people in classes.
Great for these types of students Like to go out. Like sports such as football or basketball, and sports like hiking and skiing. Many opportunities to get involved.
