    Tips for prospective students

    1. As a student at UT, you should always join at least one club. This way you can get to know at least a small amount of people. If you're in a tight knit club then you'll end up going places, like parties, together.
    2. Don't be afraid to approach people in you classes and introduce yourself. It's always good to have at least one friend in each class.
    3. Create study groups with friends and study ahead of time before you go out and party that way you don't fall behind in your school work.
    4. Go to your professors' office hours and introduce yourself. They always like to know that a student is actually interested in their class.
    5. Don't be afraid to raise your hand during class and give out an answer. Even if it's the wrong answer, the professors like it when students participate.
    6. Go to your professor if you have a question, even if it's a small one. Figuring out the answer sooner rather than later can save you several points on an exam.
    7. Keep an agenda book and write down important dates. This way you don't get worried about the exam you forgot.
    8. You're in college. You are here for a degree so don't forget that. Studying should always come first, but if you do have some free time then go hang out. Also, remember to have fun.

Great for these types of students

UT is great for students who like being in a city type community. It's great for those who like to walk, bike, or take the bus. It's great for students who don't mind being in big classes and want to make friends with anyone they can. UT is great for students who are serious and fun at the same time. UT is especially for students who are outgoing or who like to hang out with people even if it is to study.

    Am learning a lot

I know you are hearing all about how big UT is and how big the classes are and how big campus is. All this might be a little intimidating and even scary for you! But no worries! There will certainly be one or two classes that you will have that are just humongous! But there are also other classes that aren’t that bad. The trick first is to join a FIG! They are programs that reserve smaller classes for students who sign up and you get to go to many classes with the same group of people. I am part of a program that is similar to a FIG called Gateway. That's where I met 5 of my really good friends! Also, it will help a lot if you use websites such as pick-a-prof because the student reviews and ratings are mostly accurate! This website allows you to search your class and the teachers who have taught it and it also gives you a breakdown (in %) of the grades that the professor has given. You don't want to get stuck with a professor that you could have avoided by using the website! Lastly, when you are finally in the classroom, I suggest you bring a laptop to take notes because the teacher talks really fast. However, if you are easily distracted then it’s not such a good idea. Also, I have also been told and learned from experience that reviewing your notes just 5 minutes every day will help you remember everything a lot better than waiting until the night before a test to cram! One last thing! Sit in front! That way,
    1. the professor knows that you have been to class all semester long so if any issues arise, they are more likely to help you out
    2. you won’t be distracted and
    3. You can hear better!
    Goodluck and have fun!

    Am enjoying being here

I love it at UT! There is so much to do around here and so many people to meet. There is always something going on on-campus. If you go to utexas.edu, you can search for the calendar and sign up to get emails about the weekly events that are happening around campus! UT is also very diverse so you are bound to meet and run into a lot of different kinds of people. There is also many many different clubs and organizations to join. I guarantee there will be something out there that you are interested in! And if not, you can always start one with 3 friends and $5 I believe. There are also things like the movie theater and Dobie and the many gyms (like Gregory and the Red Center) around campus that you get to go in for free! I know that there are always organizations set up in Jester and in the West Mall (in front of the FAC). If you really can’t find anything to do, there are always the many shops on Guadalupe (the Drag) that you can explore! The best thing about the events on campus is that 98% of the time, they are free free freee! Yay!

    Bang for the buck

There is a LOT of resources that are available for students on campus. If you want to feel and be a part of students who have a say on campus, you can always join the Student Council. There are your counselors, professors and TA's that you can go see if you need any help. Located in Jester (first floor) is the Career Explorations Center where you can look up majors and see where they can lead you! On the third floor of Jester, there is the tutoring place where all students get 10 free hours of tutoring! In JCL (Jester City Limits) located on Jester first floor, there are tables set up in the evenings for specific classes so that students can come together and work on homework together and help each other out! You can also get tutoring down there for free! Located at the FAC is the student writing center where you can get help with your papers so that they are PERFECT! Lastly, there are the great libraries on campus full of awesome books and places to study! You can find help with anything in there, just make sure you ask! You can also borrow laptops or use computers for free in the libraries as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Aside from all the tips that have already been mentioned above, I just suggest that students don’t study all the time! You are in a great city and a great campus! Go out and join an organization, meet some people, and have some fun! Studying all the time is not good for your health. Sometimes, besides hanging out with friends or going to events, I like to work out to relax my body. It helps me sleep at night and it might help you! Another tip is that you might get lonely sometimes (because campus is so big) so make sure to plan dates with your friends in order to catch up! Everyone is going in their own direction and if you don’t plan things, sometimes you won’t get to see them at all.

Great for these types of students

I think that UT is great for all kinds of students! You can find things to do and different organizations for people of all types, size, and ages! So don’t be scared to apply or afraid that you won’t fit in because you will! And you will always have a friend there already who is willing to lend a helping hand-me!

    Did learn a lot

Depends how you define learning. Academically I was stumped most of the time and had to have constant help. To be honest almost nothing stuck to me. Career wise and life wise, I learned alot from UT. I learned some tricks and tips that I use now in very effective ways in my career as a Filmmaker.

    Did enjoy being here

Again, academically UT can be a drag. But once you start going to classes for your major its like stepping into a whole different world. It's so much fun and you don't mind getting up at 8am on a Friday to go your favorite class.
Don't just stick to courses having to do with your major. You're in college, experiment. You can stay within your limits, say take a theater class if you're a pre-med student. Or go beyond the box, take an astronomy class if your a dance major.
And you just have to join at least one club. Its a great way to get away from studying and just enjoy yourself. Just like with classes, explore your interests by joining random clubs, you can always leave if you feel its not right for you after all.

    Bang for the buck

Everyone knows that UT is expensive. And the financial aid department likes to play tricks on you. But it's worth it. Being from UT employeers are most likey to hire you opposed to the guy with the associates degree. And if you were experimental with clubs and such, it just looks that much better. Plus, the life experience you get there is unmatched.

    Tips for prospective students

UT is a academically challenging school. Keep that in mind before you go partying. All parties are the same so you won't miss anything by missing a couple of parties. DO NOT party your first semester, it's tempting, I know, but your first semester you should be more for getting used to the new environment. Once you feel comfortable at your new home away from home, then you can go out into the wild city of Austin.
There's alot of amazing places in Austin just don't explore them all at once, they'll get boring pretty quickly. There's also many events in both Austin and UT that are always good to go check out.

Great for these types of students

UT is a great school if you have your basics out of the way. If not it can be stressful and challenging. UT is more for those that have gone to community college and are now ready to go on and learn more about their trade. The you're an Engineering, Economics, Film (UT has an amazing Film Department), Business, English, History, or Social Working major, then UT is the best place for you AFTER getting at least your Calculus, History, Government, Economics, and Math out of the way.

Because the university is so large, many undergrads will only have the chance to take large lecture classes for a few semesters. In these types of classes, it is up to the student to learn the material on his own. With classes this size, however, there are most likely always study groups for homework, tests, etc. Basically, the amount you learn is up to you.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't stay in your dorm all semester! People tend to form groups of friends really quickly but most like to meet new people. Go out, meet people, join a club or an intramural, talk to the person sitting next to you in class. There are so many ways to meet people around campus.
It's a great idea to consider living on campus your first year (and maybe even your second). You're close to everything - classes, library, gym, on campus events, dining halls, even the drag (the nickname for guadalupe st, which has a lot of shopping and cheap restaurants) - and you get familiar with the campus.
If you eat on campus, eat at Kinsolving or J2 more than JCL and Littlefield Patio Cafe - it's cafeteria style food, so not gourmet, but they are cheaper, and they're buffets.
Explore Austin!!! Austin is an unbelievable city and there is so much for everyone - nightlife, green parks, music festivals.
You can even use the city buses for free with your student id card -- take advantage of that!
The gym is free for you, too!
Go to your professor's office hours! They are required to have these hours and most just sit around in their office during that time. They will (most likely) appreciate that you are taking the initiative to ask them questions. In larger lecture classes, the TAs will hold the office hours as opposed to the professor, but the same philosophy applies.
Take classes that interest you! There are so many possibilities. Need a science credit but hate biology? Try astronomy! Need a fine arts credit and just want a break from the textbooks? You can take theatre! There is even a History of Rock & Roll class.
Find ways to have fun - that is why people love UT. Whether you're more into the partying scene or just hanging out with friends or going to the free movies that the student union shows twice a week, there is so much to do.

Great for these types of students

Most people will tell you that UT is best for the partying, tailgating, outgoing student, which is partially true. But anyone can fit in at UT as long as they try. There are clubs for everything- foreign languages, religions, movie fanatics. One of the greatest things about UT is the diversity. Bottom line, UT is great for really anyone due to the opportunities provided by the university and student body.

The University of Texas at Austin (UT) was named a Public Ivy meaning that you can get a very good education at a public university. From my experience at UT, I believe that the title is well deserved. I am currently enrolled in the Cockrell School of Engineering, and I can tell you for sure that the faculty, staff, and resources here at the school are top-notch (My basis for comparison largely comes from my experience at the University of North Texas).

Of course, there are always those more general classes, also known as 'freshmen' courses, that are sometimes not always so great. Because the classes are so big for these courses, I think there is more of a disconnect between the students and teachers, but that's my opinion on it. These courses are the only reason why I have deducted a star from learning, but in the end as you get further along in your major, the professors do become a lot better.

    Am enjoying being here

I come from the DFW area, so by comparison, Austin as a city, is a lot smaller. With that being said, Austin is still a very nice city that has many great places that college students can go to.

As for the school, the classmates that I have had interaction with are very friendly and helpful, though I must admit I have really only met a very small fraction of the school population (there are over 50,000 students enrolled; the school population itself is like the population of a small town!).

There are cafeterias around campus, but I rarely eat at them because there are restaurants on a street that students call the Drag that take BevoBucks. If you decide to go with a meal plan, which you need in order to get into the cafeterias conveniently, then you need to know that all it really is a down payment that's used as a type of debit card, only for food. So, in my opinion, there really is no need to get a meal plan because in the end, if you don't use it all, then it's gone after the next semester.

Now something that does bother me a little bit about the campus is that on the outskirts, there are quite a few homeless people. For me, coming from the suburbs of the DFW area, I have never really gotten used to seeing beggars on the street corners. By no means are they mean, it's just very disconcerting seeing them. (They usually aren't on the actual campus, but they do stay on the street corners that are fairly close, so you'll see them coming to school or walking around downtown)

    Bang for the buck

I actually applied for the more expensive private universities as well to keep my options open, but in the end, one of the main reasons that I decided to choose UT Austin was because of money. I had a college savings account, but since that was based on the stock markets, well, you can imagine how much I had left. (However, if you are an out of state student, the tuition can be just as high as private universities, around three times higher than what in-state students pay for tuition)

But even though my tuition was fairly low, the number of resources available to the students is incredible. The university has a ton of cool speaker events and also extremely good facilities, such as libraries and gyms. For me, UT Austin is well worth the money that I pay.

    Tips for prospective students

Well, first off, use the resources that the university offers! You pay to go to the school, so use as much as you can. There are study abroad advising, career centers, libraries, academic counseling, recreation centers, and more. I see many students who don't take advantage of the resources that they pay for, and these things can very well help you get a job in the future and also make your life a lot easier!

Also, don't be afraid to ask your professors for help. Go to their office hours and whatever tutorial sessions that the teaching assistants or professors have; most of them are very, very helpful. In the end, if you're on the border-line for a certain grade, and the professor saw that you were trying by doing all the above things, you will find that most professors are very sympathetic and will sometimes give you a little bump. However, if you didn't really try in their class, of course they won't be as understanding.

UT Austin is also known as a party school. College is perhaps one of the best times of your life, but take it from me that you don't want to party even one semester away because that will hurt, a lot, in the long run. There's nothing wrong with having fun! Not at all! But do things in moderation, and you will have an absolutely great time.

And one of the important things is to be smart! What I mean by this is that UT Austin is a big school, and when you have a large group of people, crime is bound to happen. Don't leave your stuff unattended. If you bring your bike to school, make sure you lock it up with either a really good lock, or two locks. If you bring your car to school (I wouldn't bring any type of nice car personally, i.e. BMW, Mercedes, etc.), don't leave anything interesting lying out or else it will be broken into. It's always better to be safe than have something happen to you.

Great for these types of students

For some people, the sheer size of the university can be daunting, and for others it can be exciting. Because UT Austin isn't a small school, the students that absolutely love small schools will definitely not like it here.

Another thing to note is that UT is smack in the middle of downtown Austin, so for the students that are seeking a more rural look, this is going to be a disappointment. But for those who love city life, Austin would be a great place.

In the end, if you're unsure, stop by and visit the campus. Take a tour, and you will probably have a clearer idea of whether or not this is the right school for you or not, because in the end you want a school that makes you happy and if it doesn't, then the college experience won't be as great as it should.

Your professors are experts in their fields, and bring an exuberance to classes that were rare in high school classes. They also make sure to provide you with the tools to succeed and inspire you to continue learning even after the class is over.

    Am enjoying being here

There is so much to do here in Austin. On campus there is always festivals, shows and events. You can go on Guadalupe street to shop and eat. Downtown is only 5 minutes away by bus, and it is easy to get to malls. The parks are beautiful and well kept. They are especially wonderful for those who like photography. Resident are polite and helpful.

    Bang for the buck

You get the best of the best at University of Texas at Austin . They make sure all of your needs are met and any events are cheap. When teachers pick out books they make an attempt to save students money by requiring books that can come used or that you ca use for more than one class. The atmosphere is worth the cost.

    Tips for prospective students

Get a map of the campus and walk it before classes start because it is easy to get lost. If you go to cultural festivals you can meet new people and get free food. The campus bus system will be your best friend. The campus is huge and is horrible to have to walk across. Don't be afraid to use campus study resources, they are free and meant to help you pass.

Great for these types of students

This campus is great for those who want to expand your horizons. Those who enjoy politics will love being so close to the capital. There are numerous music festivals for those who enjoy music like SxSW. Nature lovers will enjoy the parks.

There are a lot of different classes that they offer at UT tha tmight not be towards your degree but are fun and can count towards your elective courses. For instance, there's scubadiving, musical instrument classes, and physical education classes.
Aside from learning in the courses, there are over 900 student organizations on campus. There's practically an organization for everything - just think of it, and you'll find it.
Joining and organization is a great way to make new friends and learn new things. I joined a business organization and every week there is a different company that comes to the meeting and talks about their company and different jobs that are offered at the company. Plus, it helps to network with those companies to land an internship in the future.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at UT! The first month of school is so fun. There are all sorts of things happening on campus. You have all those different organizations campaigning and recruiting new members. There are lots of freebies being handed out on campus like backpacks, hats, frisbies, food, and more.
The people on campus are so friendly and you can just feel the amount of school spirit during sport games - it's amazing.
During your four years at UT, you should at least attend one football game. That is where you'll experience the most school spirit.
Besides the amount of school spirit and friendliness of being on campus, there's the enjoyment of being in Austin in general. There are so many different restaurants to experience and different places to drive out to and hang out like Lake Travis or Barton Springs.

    Bang for the buck

Going to a big university is definitely different from attending community college. Community college might be cheaper but the level of education you're getting isn't quite the same. You are challeged more as a student here at UT, which is hard but feels so good when you push yourself and see that A at the end of the semester.
UT has so many helpful facilities on campus that are provided for you. There's the learning center where you can get up to 15 hours of free one-on-one tutoring, the student service building where you can go to, 24-hour security service on campus, the libraries, and I can go on and on.
It is expensive but if you utilize and take advantage of all the things that UT offers, it turns out to be a great bargain!

    Tips for prospective students

During the first semester, you're going to get pulled into the night life and habits of going out, making new friends, and skipping class but always try to leave some time for studying.
You probably hear it a lot but it really works. Studying helps so much. Sometimes going to class isn't much help but if you have a textbook, make sure you actually open it and read it from time to time. Don't just spend a $100 on a textbook and not highlight and take notes in it. You're going to sell it back for the used price anyway, go ahead and mark all over it.
Getting to know your professors is helpful also. If you aren't doing very well in the class but you go to the office hours often, the professors will be more lenient because they see that you've been trying.

Great for these types of students

UT is great for those who like being in a big class setting and aren't shy to raise their hand to ask/answer a question.
There are about 40,000 students on campus so if you're into meeting new people, UT is a great place to do it.
Summary: Great for outgoing, energetic, high spirited, studious students.

It's really up to the individual on how much you learn at UT. Just like any other school, they're not going to force you to study or pay attention in class. Currently I've completed my first semester at UT as a freshman and have found that the material in the basic lecture classes isn't always that interesting, so for me it didn't really stick, but I really enjoyed Intro to Psychology. I would have to say that I learned the most in Calculus 1 and Psychology.

    Am enjoying being here

As many people know, Austin is an amazing city. Theres always tons of activities and there's tons of people to go to the activities with! It's a beautiful campus and pretty much everyone is willing to help you with whatever questions you may have. I had a great first semester and am looking forward to starting my second.

    Bang for the buck

The prestige of UT will most certainly help in getting future jobs, but with all that money you pay for tuition it's a bit confusing why a good number of the dorms are pretty old. Well the tuition allows the students to have high quality professors and allows the students to have access to lots of resources like research essays and books.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Rain boots and an umbrella are necessities if you want to stay dry, it rains a good amount in Austin.
    2. Don't ever be afraid to ask for help about anything, if the first person isn't of much help just ask someone else!
    3. If you want to be pretty sure you get a good professor check out websites like pick-a-prof, they have honest and useful reviews from UT students
    4. Get your books early, theres almost always a delay at the Co-Op. And if you're buying books from the Co-Op save your receipts!!! You can go back to the Co-Op when you're done with you're books (to sell them back) and get 10% back of what you paid for them, which is not much but it's still something! Also check into renting (westcampusbooks.com, chegg.com) your books or buying them online (amazon), even looking at used bookstores.
    5. Make sure to make one or two friends in each of your classes. Knowing people can help with study groups and getting notes when you're absent. Don't be one of those people who always sends mass emails out because they are afraid to say hi to the person sitting next to them!
    6. Sitting closer to the front in big lectures helps a lot. One because you can hear what the professor is saying SO MUCH better, like reminders of test dates and due dates (very important stuff here people!!!), and two because you get less distracted by all the movement from the other 249 people (maybe even more!) in your class.
    7. Stay organized. Keep all your syllabi and mark down the important dates on a calendar or in an organizer/planner.
    8. Keep you're map from Orientation, also make sure to read through the magazine they give you at orientation, I'm pretty sure it has Bevo on the front of it. It has some pretty useful information and tips in there.
    9. If you're staying in the dorms on campus, bring a rug. Most dorms have tile floors, and it's no fun to have you're feet cold when you wake up in the morning!
    10. AVOID 8 o'clock classes. Check the registrar before your registration time and write down the unique numbers to classes you want, that way you can plug them in quickly and be done. Also make sure to have backups just in case the classes you want are closed, and don't be afraid to waitlist the class you want.
    11. Keep in touch with your advisor. They're there job is to help you!
    12. Get familiar with the bus system. It can be really helpful on rainy days, and you can even put your bike on the front!
    13. Don't hop onto the living on campus wagon right away. Check out apartments around campus and compare prices to see which would work best for you.
    14. Don't forget to take study breaks and remember to have fun.

Great for these types of students

UT is great for students who are serious about they're school work. The workload is no joke. But no matter what you're personality type is, you're bound to find people you mesh with at a school of this size. So if you're serious about your school work, UT is for you!

The classes, while crammed full of information, are taught by exceptional professors who know how to teach. These professors work with you, taking time from their day and even making special arrangements to meet with you, to help you better understand everything you need to know and more. The professors are people who in their free time continue to explore their respective fields, and thus, teach from their actual experiences.

    Am enjoying being here

UT is a place where you can meet and interact with people from all walks of life. You can easily make new friends here, the friends that you'll have for life. The University has thousands of clubs, and new ones are created everyday. You will definitely be able to find your own niche there and find people with whom you can relate. The campus has top-class facilities and resources that are open to student use. UT is also located smack-dab in the center of downtown Austin. Austin is a place for culture and entertainment. If ever you want to venture off campus, you can always find something to do on the streets of Austin.

    Bang for the buck

Students come to UT to learn. UT then also tries to make this pursuit of knowledge affordable. Both the University as a whole and each individual college offer multitudes of scholarships that are then applicable to all different kinds of students. The scholarships are also updated frequently. In addition, UT may be less expensive than other schools being a public school. Don't then assume that the education you earn then is any less valuable than other schools.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Most students, myself included, suffer from procrastination. However at UT, you will find it very difficult to fall behind in your classes. UT offers additional resources for students who might be struggling in their classes or who are interested in additional instruction, including free tutoring, flexible professors, and supportive clubs and student networks. My advice: take advantage of these; they are here for you. Try new things for you may find you like the new opportunities provided to you.
    2. Buy your books from the Co-Op early to make sure they arrive before classes begin. At the end of the semester, you can return your books to the Co-Op for pretty good prices.
    3. Bring clothing for all weather. The weather in Austin is wacky: one day it will be sweltering hot, the next blustering cold, and the day after wet and rainy. Bring rain boots, an umbrella, layers, your winter coat, and maybe a wind breaker for it can get breezy.
    4. A few days before classes begin, map out your route to your classes. You don't want to be clueless on your first day.
    5. Talk to your professors. They are really interested in talking to you, however scary they may seem.
    6. Get a good alarm clock. You will be tempted to sleep through a few of your classes.
    7. Do try and get some sleep. Save the parties and Netflix marathons for the weekend.
    8. Take the city bus. It's free for students and can take you anywhere you need to go. It can also be fun, like a mini-adventure.
    9. Don't forget when studying, you do need to take breaks and have fun every once in a while. You're in college, you deserve some fun. The key is balance.

Great for these types of students

UT is great for students who know what they want to do and for those who are still not quite sure. For those students who have already planned out their college experience, UT helps these students dive into their classes and assists them in achieving all their goals. For those students still unsure of what they want to do after college, UT helps these students explore their options until they find the place for them. Many of UT's colleges are ranked highly nationally, so UT is great for students who want to become the best at what they do.

    Will learn a lot

Many people in my family have gone to UT and my uncle was even an engineering professor there for a long time. Everyone that has gone there from my family has become extremely successful and are very intelligent and bright individuals. I know UT has a lot to offer academically.

    Will enjoy being here

I have been to the campus many times and I absolutely LOVE the environment, the people, the city, everything! I love a challenge and I also love to have fun, and UT offers both.

    Bang for the buck

UT is expensive, however, I am an independent student and have to pay for college on my own and I made it happen because I know it's worth it. UT has so much to offer, and so many great programs, I definitely think it is worth every penny.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply EARLY. Do not wait until the last minute because you risk all of the parts to your application not getting there on time. They receive so many applications and they aren't going to make an exception and review an application that arrived late, it's just going to be tossed out.

Great for these types of students

Open minded, willing to learn, enjoy an urban environment, enjoy things like riding bikes and being outdoors, and friendly.

Don't let the massive size fool you. Even though UT is renowned for its size, there are plenty of classes and extracurriculars that make you feel important and not just another face in the crowd.

    Bang for the buck

Even though the room-and-board is a bit expensive, I'd definitely recommend staying here for a year or two. It's really convenient to walk to and from class when you live on campus. There are also tons of resources available, from tutoring, to writing essays.

    Tips for prospective students

Gather all of your syllabi and class schedules and make a homework list. Make one for each week, sort them by classes, and highlight all of the important stuff, like major tests, projects, and presentations (or if you have it in a Word doc like me, italicize or boldface them). You'll really get a sense of how your workload is each week and you won't be overwhelmed by all of those dates if you keep them organized.

Also, take the time to plan out your four years: which classes you're going to take (or test out of), which organizations you'll join. Even make a to-do list once you're here, whether it's crossing off more ambitious goals like finishing or researching for a paper early, or more simple goals like going to the gym or running errands. You'll likely be busier in college than you were in high school, so it's best to give yourself reminders.

Also find a job here on campus. Even if it's doing a work study or working at a restaurant along Guadalupe, it helps you manage your time, not to mention earning a little cash. :)

Great for these types of students

There's anything and everything here available for all kinds of students. People of all ethnicities, religious backgrounds, sexualities, etc. are welcomed here. If you don't mind living in the middle of the city, there are quieter areas around campus to study or live at. Bus shuttles are also available, but students also like to walk or take their bike around campus.

I am not only learning a ton inside the classroom, but UT Austin teaches you skills outside academics as well. Professors may be brutal, but they teach you to get your work done on time and with exceptional quality or you'll suffer the consequences. They teach independence. They teach you to ask for help when you need it, which inadvertently teaches you that if you don't, your GPA will show it. I've learned to take initiative when I need help with something. I've learned to manage my time and stress. I've learned that working hard and not giving up on Physics, which I was near positive I would fail, will pay off, even if it was only with a C. I've learned to not concern myself with things I can't control, along with making the absolute best of the things I can. I've learned all of this, along with a solid semester of Calculus 2, Physics and Chemistry. I wouldn't trade it for the world!

    Am enjoying being here

I'll go ahead and be honest and say that Austin isn't for everyone. Those who fall outside a love for the big city atmosphere don't find much joy here, and usually call themselves aggies. UT Austin is smack dab in downtown Austin, TX. Walk across MLK Blvd and you'll see the Texas History Museum and the IMAX movie theater. Walk a little further and you're on the front steps of the capitol building. Stay on campus and get your spirit on while watching the numerous sporting events going on throughout the year. Join an intermural team! Join a spirit group! Walk through West Mall and be bombarded by groups and clubs of every kind; there's bound to be one you love. Study outside on the grass in front of the tower. It's beautiful. Or if you're more of an inside person, get your study on at the brand new SAC (my personal favorite), the FAC, the PCL Library or the RLM Library, depending on just how far you do or don't want to walk. With Guadalupe Street being within walking distance of just about everything, it tends to be a second home for shopping and eating. I love everything about this school. I love the spirit, the traditions and the never-ending list of things to enjoy. There is never a dull moment if you don't want there to be one. Once again, I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. Hook 'em!

    Bang for the buck

Financially, UT can be a little pricey. I give it four stars because, while I believe being a student here is worth every penny, the amount of scholarships given out by the school are of very few and very difficult to obtain. Cost of living in Austin is expensive, and therefore dorm life and apartment life that is close to campus can put a pretty substantial dent in your wallet. With that said, the reputation of this school is as high as the cost of my apartment next year. I consider the education I receive and the degrees I obtain to be worth the cost. Longhorn graduates are hired all over the place, and there is no doubt that if you work hard enough, you'll pay your college education back in no time once you join the work force with a UT diploma in your hand.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Don't let your school work completely take over your life.
Work hard, but take breaks. Giving your brain rest is extremely beneficial.
    2. Make friends with people in your classes!
Study groups saved my life last semester. It's a great way to help understand material while making really great friends.
    3. Don't trust frat boys.
    Is this offensive?
    4. Go to theme parties.
Nothing more fun than walking through campus in a toga!
    5. Watch your bank account.
The Drag will take more money from you than you'll believe.
    6. Don't give up.
I worked extremely hard, failed all four of my Physics tests and made a 50 on the final; I made a C. Curves are your best friend.
    7. But don't slack off.
Keep your GPA higher than the gas prices.
    8. Use MyEdu.com
LOW-RATED PROFFESORS = LOW GPA. Do not test this theory for yourself.
    9. If you're confused about your major, take general classes and don't worry too much about it.
    10. If you have a question, ask.
    11. Work hard; Play hard.
It's that simple. Get your work done, then take your well-deserved break. Enjoy every minute. It goes by fast!

Great for these types of students

Outgoing, students that love big-city life, personable, students that love tradition and spirit and people that love burnt orange!

    Am learning a lot

Upon arriving at UT, I wasn't sure what to expect. It's a nationally renowned university, but it's no Harvard. However, now that I've been here for a little over a semester, I'm surprised at all of the things I've learned. All of the professors that I've had so far really know what they're talking about and they seem to love what they're doing. I found that there is always a way to contact either professors or TAs whenever I had a question. Studying at UT has been a great learning experience both academically and personally.

    Am enjoying being here

At times I feel as if UT is too much of a party school. You constantly hear people talking about going to parties and getting drunk. Despite this fact, I really enjoy the atmosphere at this college. A common expression throughout city is Keep Austin Weird. I find this appropriate because there are so many little interesting, quirky places around the city to explore. There are also so many different organizations on campus and ways to make new friends so it's hard to be bored during the free time you may have between studying sessions.

    Bang for the buck

As mentioned earlier, the professors are great. I have yet to find one professor that I did not like or that did not teach me all that I needed to know. Although the college is a little expensive, it's definitely worth it. It's a great campus with fantastic professors located in an awesome city. What more can you ask for?

    Tips for prospective students

During your first year here, join student organizations. Get involved. I cannot stress this enough. I figured I would get used to the college life before I became too involved, but it's better to start early. UT has a LOT of students and it's harder to stand out at a school like this, especially since some of the classes (especially entry-level classes) have a couple hundred students each. Not only will joining organizations help you stand out, but it will also help you make new friends and make your college experience more enjoyable. Also, do not get caught up in the party scene. It may seem fun and it looks like everyone is doing it, but not everyone is and it will ruin your GPA.

Great for these types of students

UT is a great place for people who want a good education while also having a great time. It's also a good place for people that do not mind a lot of competition. Because of the large class sizes, one is more likely to have to put in a lot of effort to get leadership positions and to get recommendations from professors.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much in just 3 months. The courses are fast-paced, so there is a lot of material to learn in a very limited amount of time, but there are many classmates to study with and the professors are very helpful. Coursework can be rigorous at times, but there are many people on campus that offer assistance.

    Am enjoying being here

Attending UT at first can be intimidating, but many students are able to adapt to it instantly. There are many interesting people to meet, and the campus offers many recreational places to hang out at. There is also a wide array of restaurants to eat at. Students will find themselves making their own decisions, but the extra independence and responsibility will help them adapt quicker and will inspire them to work to their full potential.

    Bang for the buck

UT is not a cheap college to attend, but the cost of attendance is well worth it. UT provides a broad range of learning very many types of students, and the professors reach out to all students willing to listen to their lectures. The housing that is provided is well kept and the dorms are within easy access of the classrooms around campus. UT is also a beautiful campus, so there are always several sites to check out. The various offices also provide excellent service, including the financial office.

    Tips for prospective students

The most important tip for students seeking to go to UT is to study constantly, especially when free time is available. Students cannot hope to pass classes without studying several hours a week. Also, seek out classmates and form study groups, since students tend to learn more efficiently in groups. Don't be afraid to ask professors for help since they are always willing to help students who show interest in their lessons. Don't procrastinate because if you miss a deadline don't expect to receive an extension unless you missed the deadline because of a special circumstance like an illness.

Great for these types of students

UT is a very competitive school, and only the most self-disciplined students succeed. Those who are very competitive will love the challenge of competing with fellow students by making good grades and earning academic scholarships. UT is a college for the most intellectual students, but even those types of students will find themselves challenged by the rigid courses UT provides.

The staff in this university is amazing. Although some may not have the best first impressions, they are genuinely interested in their students' progress. The teaching assistants are able to help me in every single class I've taken, no matter how lost I am, they manage to teach me something and help me get back on track. Even though I took a few AP classes back in high school, it is nothing compared to what I learned here at UT Austin. And this is only my second year! I can't wait until I take more degree oriented classes.
I not only learn academics from these professors and TAs, I learned a few life lessons as well that are sure to stay with me for the rest of my life. The professors are not just your teachers, they can be your mentors as well.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the Austin culture! It's got a cool vibe to it, a bit carefree and a little less conservative than where I came from. UT has alot of free programs for students as well. I constantly find myself debating which event I should go to because there are so many! We also have famous speakers that drop by every so often...it's quite an experience to get to meet them!
The campus is beautiful! There are many study places, indoors and outdoors. It might be HUGE, but that's also one of the reasons why I like it. I don't ever find myself being bored while on campus, there are just so many places to hang around.

    Bang for the buck

Although the tuition and housing might seem expensive, it's actually not bad at all if you compare it to the other college costs. For the cost that you attend at UT, you might think you're going to an expensive junior college. But it's not that at all! The price is amazing for what you get. Awesome professors, plenty of student events, free bus rides (oh believe me, it comes in really handy when you're trying to get around town!), free gym membership, and so much more.
Not to mention the football game tickets for $75 for the entire season! (of course, you'd have to go claim it yourself)

    Tips for prospective students

If you decide going to see your professors is not your thing, at least go see your Teach Assistants (TAs). They are the ones who can help you succeed because they are able to get in more one-on-one time with you rather than your professors. You never know if your TAs might start talking about you to your professors! Then you'll really stand out!
During the weekends (or your free weeknights), check out downtown. Austin isn't like anything I've experienced, it's not like a typical city to me. If you're into music, this is it for you. They've got tons of artists coming into town each week!
If you have any questions after you've been accepted, ask them during your summer orientation! The orientation advisors are hired to help you, and they're more than willing to help! They are among some of the friendliest people I know.

Great for these types of students

Music lovers, this is your city! The music scene here is awesome, and every artist that I have ever wanted to see have been here! (even the foreign European ones!). Even if you're not so much into music, you should check it out, it's a great experience.
I see UT as a not-so-conservative college. We constantly have students voicing out their opinions around campus, and it's great!
The diversity of the students is phenomenal, there are so many different shapes, sizes, colors, any combination that you can think of!

My classes and professors have all been awesome. The courses in my major are definitely challenging, but I enjoy being challenged, and my professors are some of the top in their fields. In most of my core requirement subjects, the professors have been top notch (including Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize finalists teaching first year courses), though not all of the courses have been riveting. All in all, though some of the material may be repetitive, I've learned to take all of the knowledge to such a higher level that it's been a great experience academically.

    Am enjoying being here

If you can't figure out how to have fun at UT you aren't trying hard enough. There are 50,000 people here, so there's sure to be people you will get along with. There are extracurriculars of every shape and size, including one of the strongest Greek systems in the nation, active political groups, vibrant religious organizations, thriving academic groups, preprofessional associaations, and some of the top sporting clubs in the nation. Texas pretty much dominates every sport, from football to basketball to swimming and tennis. Football gamedays are crazy--try to imagine 100,000 people singing The Eyes of Texas at the top of their lungs without getting excited, and as many more outside the stadium tailgating and having a blast. UT is a top academic school, but students know how to have fun--it's one of the best party schools in the nation and on any given weekend night there is lots going on. Basically UT is the most fun any college student could imagine--and they throw in a top notch education too!

    Bang for the buck

Simply put, you cannot get a better education for the price anywhere in the nation. UT is one of the top universities in the United States for a grand total of $8,000 tuition and fees per year. Throw in a cost of living which is relatively affordable for a city offering as much as Austin and you get one of the top educations in the world for about $80,000--which would get you three semesters at an Ivy League school. UT also has the top job placement service in the nation and strong alumni networks from Houston to Hong Kong. Not only do UT students get a great education for a great price, they get great paying jobs afterwards too!

    Tips for prospective students

Keep your class rank up! The vast majority of students at UT are automatically admitted for ranking in the top ten percent of a Texas high school, so a high rank is imperative. Otherwise, remember the essays are weighted almost as much as the extracurricular experience is--two good essays can go a long way to get in. Otherwise, just come check out Austin and you'll realize how great UT is and how it will be the best four years of your life!

Great for these types of students

Intelligent students who are involved in the community and love to have fun! You could have a good experience if you are strong in any of these suits but those who combine these traits have a college experience that cannot be topped anywhere in the nation.

the university of texas at austin is nationally recognized and boasts some great teachers and a wonderful curriculum. the campus is huge and is home to hundreds of student clubs and passionate, active students. there is always an event going on or some activity that you can get involved in on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

if you are planning on attending ut make sure that you find a place to live several months beforehand because leases are signed very early on. also, often times the campus can be crowded so i recommend finding a study spot that you call your own where you know you can focus. i do not recommend living too far from campus because you'll find that a lot of the action happens on or near campus and you won't want to miss it. this includes, but is not limited to, campus events, seminars, club/organization stands on campus, free red bulls from the redbull car, awesome parties, club meetings, job opportunities, chances to volunteer, etc... also, i recommend joining a club so that you can get a wider network of friends - there are so many people to meet at ut!

    Academic Rigor

this is a tough school and you can't slack off if you want anything higher than a 3.0 gpa. teachers are usually very nice about helping students out and have several teacher assistants, so you have the opportunity to succeed but you must put forth a lot of effort on your part. classes can be over 300 students sometimes but there are supplementary discussion sections during the week that you will go to and can clarify any questions you have. there is always lots of faculty and peer support so as long as you don't party your life away during the week and focus on homework, maybe camping out at the pcl library for a couple days, then you should be fine.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is fun and safe, i have never had any bad experiences except that time i left the mac and cheese in too long and almost burned down the building. the student body is diverse so you often have a chance to meet people from various backgrounds and nationalities - i've made a lot of cool foreign friends. however, rent can often get very expensive so make sure you find a place early on!

    Food and Dining

there are several restaurants on campus and i'm certain that you can find something that suits your taste. burgers, tex-mex, chicken, and of course plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. austin is a student city and there are hundreds of cafes and delicious, cheap restaurants that surround the campus.

    What to do for fun

only ten minutes away from campus, lake austin is a popular place to go for a study break. you can rent canoes or take a run along the shore, and it's a green getaway that is easy to fall in love with. also, there are lots of nearby outdoor activities in austin, including rock climbing and hiking. the nightlife is also great since austin is the live music capital of texas, if not the u.s. there are always bands and concerts and you're bound to see some of your favorite artists play in austin, and probably for far cheaper than you would elsewhere. lastly, make sure not to miss 6th street, a mecca for all night clubbing and shenanigans.

    Bang for the buck

near west campus on guadelupe st. there is a delicious gyro restaurant, arpeggios grill. they have huge gyro's stuffed with succulent gyro meat and fresh vegetables, with a side of humus and pita bread for only $5. a definite must! my lunch everyday.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the huge, monumental ut clock tower often plays the best little jingles. one time they played lady gaga's poker face.

Great for these types of students

if you are not scared to try new things and meet new, fun, and intelligent people that may challenge your previous beliefs - then this is the place for you. it will be challenging academically and as i've found out it's really easy to get lost in the crowd. if you want to be just mediocre and stand out then go to a smaller university with less competition. if you want to work your butt off and get recognized by some important people, then ut is the place for you.

    Clubs and Activities

there are hundreds of clubs and extracurricular activities at ut - simply too many to list. if you can name it, they have it. simple as that.

    Greek Life

lots of greek life all over west campus with some amazing socials and parties. it is a definite to check out one of these parties if you go to ut, at least once!

    Campus Safety

campus is very safe and there are police offers often patrolling the area, i have never had any concerns. occasionally you will see homeless people and they may get rowdy at night as they're often drinking rum from paper sacs, but usually they're docile and just minding their own business - don't bother them.

    Tips for prospective students

i would recommend to stay in a dorm for your first year so you can live on campus. it is a huge school and it will get you familiar so you can find all your classes. this helped a lot and now that i know where everything is, now i can move out. i plan on moving in a condo. if you do plan to live somewhere else besides a dorm, i suggest you look soon.

    Clubs and Activities

there are so many club i am sure you will find something for you.

    Campus Safety

there is a number that you can call that will walk you to dorm if you stay on campus. its like from 11 until 2am. it is really cool cause if you stay at the library late.

    Am learning a lot

As a student at the University of Texas at Austin, I have been afforded the opportunity to learn so much in the time that I have been here. I have met people from many walks of life and many different ethnic groups—many professors, teacher’s assistants, mentors, advisers, students, etc. As an African-American student, I have realized that culture is very important to me. I yearned to learn more. I have, since my entrance into the University, changed my major from Psychology to African/African-American Studies. Making this change was groundbreaking for me as it allows me to delve more into a lost culture of my own that I was not previously aware of. Participating in Ethnic Studies also lets me learn of other people’s art, literature, music, systems of beliefs, values and principles. I am now able to view the world with a more oppositional gaze contrary to the way I have been conditioned to see things. Many of these same professors, mentors, advisers and peers have had a great influence on me and have taught me so much throughout my journey thus far at UT Austin; not just academically, but socially, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. There are so many academic opportunities at UT to continue your academic growth. There is the University of Texas Learning Center (UTLC) where students are allowed a decent number of FREE tutoring hours with peers and upperclassmen who specialize in particular subjects. There is also the Undergraduate Writing Center (UWC) where students are allowed to meet with English/Rhetoric and Writing students, graduate students and instructors to get help with papers. Both of these resources have been of great help to me! Also, the Career Exploration Center is a very awesome resource to find out where you should go with your career or to figure out what career path to take. I have definitely been a regular attendee of said office. I have learned above all to utilize all of my resources!

    Am enjoying being here

I love the University of Texas at Austin! It is in the State Capitol city of Texas. Austin is a place filled with much culture (e.g.: music, art, food, etc.) Even with school being the first priority while I am in Austin, I am able to encounter this culture and diversity daily because of the multiplicity of the kinds of people who teach, attend and visit the University. I have had the chance to explore new music here at the University of Texas—specifically a class I took at the University called “Jazz Appreciation.” As cliché as it may sound, I left with a sincere appreciation and love for jazz and many other types of music. I have also met many people and I have been to my share of gatherings with friends. It is important to go out and have fun—places like 6th Street, South Congress, Guadalupe, even the movie theater are awesome places to get out and get your mind off of school for a bit and relax. Try new restaurants, bars, or even just walk around Austin to see what awesome things you can encounter. College is not all about learning in the classroom, but also among others in fun, social gatherings outside of class.

    Bang for the buck

I would say that the University of Texas is definitely worth the cost. You definitely get the bang for your buck. Though it can seem pricey with personal and state financial issues, there are so many opportunities that help to fund this awesome Longhorn experience (i.e.: Federal Financial Aid, Cappex.com, University issued scholarships, etc.) UT Austin helps to provide its students with the best educational and social experiences possible with as many financial opportunities possible. There is even an Annual Giving Center on the campus where students, including myself, work to call alumni, Texas parents, etc. to seek help in fundraising efforts to help students fund schooling, research, internships, study abroad, etc. Just knowing that the University cares this much to help its students, I would say that whatever we as students would be left to pay is definitely worth it for a University that genuinely attentive to its students. The University offers Special Speakers Series—a free series of lectures and speakers where reputable speakers, professors, scholars and authors such as Maya Angelou, Gary M. Lavergne, and Shirin Ebadi come to present information and panel discussions to instructors and students alike. There is also the UT Theater where every week there is a film shown in the UT Theater for students for free! These along with the previously named academic resources are just a couple of the many events, opportunities and activities that the University puts on for its student body. Most definitely a bang for your buck!

    Tips for prospective students

    1. VISIT!!! To truly find out if it is for you, be sure to visit as much as you can before making your decision! See if you can stay for a weekend. This will help with your decision making.

    2. Ask questions! As many as possible! Never be afraid if you do not know something. People at the University want to help you! Let them

    3. Apply for scholarships and as much free money as possible. Do not allow the fear of not getting these opportunities steer you from trying. There are so many opportunities for you to pay for school and enjoy such a University as Texas.

    4. Be open to new things. There is so much you can learn and gain from those around you. Learn of others and teach others of you and your culture along the way. You will be amazed by how much the exchange of culture, information, love and knowledge will impact you, others and the campus as a whole.

    5. Join organizations, clubs, etc. It is very important to stay involved with the University. There are so many things you can do! Of course there are Greek organizations, but there are also ministries, awareness groups, societies for academics, government and even vegans who like hugs! There is something for everyone. Do not let the fear of not being accepted keep you from getting involved. You will be surprised how much people have in common with you.

    6. Do not spend all of your Dine-In Dollars and Bevo Bucks your first semester there! You will be sad and calling home for money if you do not learn how to balance you funds. Trust me, I KNOW! There are resources such as Bevonomics that help students financially who live on and off campus.

    7. Utilize the “Profiler” in order to find a roommate(s) suited for you. It is very important to get along with your roommate(s). Having a healthy relationship with the person(s) you live with is important for you to have healthy relationships with others. There are definitely Residential Assistants that help with these kinds of problems. There is the Counseling and Mental Health Center available if you need someone to talk with about issues you’re having in your living situation.

    8. Have fun! It is important to keep your academics in check; it is just as important to keep you social life in check. Don’t become a bookworm. Study and get out and have some fun. There is so much to do on campus with the many events that are put on campus wide and the many things going on in the great city of Austin. Don’t cloud your mind with school so much so that you cannot enjoy the entirety of the beauty of college.

    9. There are many more things that I can say! But you can definitely ask questions as I stated first! There is so much help out there for you. Don’t be afraid of college. You will love it. Especially Texas! Hook ‘Em \m/

Great for these types of students

EVERYONE! Though UT is big, there are ways to make the community around you small by getting involved with clubs, groups and organizations. Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, there is something for you. You will eventually break out of your shell and get to know others and more importantly yourself more.

    Am learning a lot

Both in and out of the classroom, I'm learning many things that will be of use to me in my life. My professors have been going beyond just teaching to the test. Many undergraduate science courses are undergoing course transformation, which means they're testing out new methods of teaching, which I've found to be quite successful.
The school of undergraduate studies requires all freshmen to take a signature course, the topics of which vary widely. You can register for something completely unrelated to your major and get a look at things you never would have thought about, and in the process, most classes are geared toward research to ensure that students know the fundamentals of writing and research.
The freedom that comes with going to university teaches you how to study, manage your time, and develop social/people skills.

    Am enjoying being here

There are clubs and organizations for just about anything you could possibly think of. The campus life is pretty unique. I tend to study late at night, but studying with people in different study lounges, libraries, and classrooms late at night forms great friendships. There are always plenty of things to do and places to go.

    Bang for the buck

Especially if you're paying in-state tuition, UT is definitely worth coming to. Beyond tuition and boarding, the university has plenty of things to offer. Every day I get an email listing dozens of events open to students from ballroom dancing to guest speakers to concerts and so on. The Sanger Learning Center is FREE to students who need tutoring! There's a FREE campus bus system that can take you around campus, off campus, and even to HEB. The Harry Ransom Center, a museum of collections, and the Blanton Art Museum are both located on campus. There are two gyms located on campus, FREE to students. There are multiple libraries and plenty of interesting places to study. There are tons of resources that I'm still discovering in my first year here.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Ask upperclassmen for tips! As a new student, you won't even know what specific questions to ask. People who have gone through the system know how to help you!
    2. Living on campus is definitely an experience to have. It's really convenient because not only are your classes located close by (and if you have night-time exams, that's a plus), friendships are formed and events happen and late-night studying goes on in the (in)famous Jester quiet lounge.
    3. Explore Austin. Go off campus. This city is truly like no other: a musical hub, a cultural center. Even the drag, the stretch of Guadalupe street running the length of campus, is full of great restaurants, stores, and the renaissance market which is a unique center for hand-made craft items.
    4. Make friends in every one of your classes. Make sure you know what's going on!
    5. Take advantage of the free resources available to you!
    6. Play intramural football. Or volleyball. Or basketball. Or kickball, table tennis, water volleyball, ultimate, handball...you get the idea. Even if you're REALLY bad at sports, it's so much fun to get involved and be active just as a stress break from studying.
    7. Explore campus. There are some really interesting alcoves, quadrangles, and hidden places that you'd never notice by just walking to class. For example, there's a nice courtyard hidden inside of Welch hall that I never noticed. And there's a turtle pond behind the tower. Also, getting lost is a nice way to get familiar with the layout of campus. And doing that can be great because when you get the chance to look around, you realize that campus is really quite nice.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to learn about any academic subject, different and diverse groups of people, their own beliefs and personality, etc. will get along splendidly here.

In my experience, advisors here are competent--unlike their High-School counterparts (again, in my experience). I'm in classes I actually enjoy-- with the occasional mandatory course. Tutoring and writing improvement workshops are easily available, as are real world seminars. For example, UT's Bevonomics teaches students how to budget, save, etc.

    Am enjoying being here

There is always something going on here! There are movie screenings every Wednesday and Thursday; they range from Blockbuster, foreign, and classic films. Free classes are offered: dance, language, etc. Clubs are plentiful and diverse in topic, and get-togethers of all sorts are common (e.g. frisbee games, capture the flag at night, cultural festivals, etc.). The libraries are MAGNIFICENT. And the eateries? Well, take your pick; there are a ton.

Campus is walking distance to the Capital, and the bus system can take you anywhere else.

Again, there is always something to do. You just have to find it :)

    Bang for the buck

I like the fixed rate on tuition--if you register for 12+ hours, tuition will be the same as it would be for just 12.

    Tips for prospective students

Before registering, check out a class/professor's stats on utlife.com, or ratemyprofessor.com. This'll give you a heads-up on what to expect, maybe even on what to avoid.

Great for these types of students

Anyone! Because UT is such a big school, there will always be people who share the same interests. Even if you're not very social and have no interest in meeting people, there are lots of cool places to relax and meditate and junk. The campus is a great place to explore. It boasts, in my opinion, some of the greatest museums in the US.

If you like free T-Shirts, this is the place to be!

Despite the college's motto of Study hard, party harder, don't forget why you applied to UT in the first place. Education is your greatest priority.

    Will enjoy being here

Don't think that UT is just all education. There's hundreds of clubs and organizations to join. Plus, Austin is weird town jam packed with weird people. Get involved!

    Bang for the buck

It's okay to get distracted, but don't get too distracted. YOUR performance at college will decide whether or not UT was a great investment.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused in school, maintain good grades, and don't fall for senioritis. I'll confess, it got me a couple of times. However, I managed to save myself before it was too late. As said before, don't get distracted! Wait until you walk across that stage to relax.

Great for these types of students

UT Austin is a superb school for all types of students. The campus may be intimidatingly large, but it's easy to find people you relate with and to personalize the campus to your liking.

The classes at Texas are great. I come out of each class with tons of new knowledge. Sometimes the classes are so good you don't want them to end. The professors are great. They are always friendly, and available outside of class to discuss material in class or interest in the subject. The classes also help you learn a lot about yourself, they present unbiased statements that help you develop opinions on your own.

    Am enjoying being here

Austin is a great city and UT is a great school, what more could you ask for! There are so many productions and activities going on at school its hard to keep up with all of it, but you will never be bored. Coming from a small city, there was a lot of new experiences for me at UT. You get emerged into different cultures, experiences, and activities.

    Bang for the buck

If you take advantage of all that UT has to offer, you definitely will not be disappointed. There's a lot of free things offered to students on campus. For example, at the beginning of semester there's free yoga classes, discounts on massages, the gym AND pool are free, there's free concerts, and even free t-shirts on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

There is so much that the University of Texas has to offer, but it definitely will not happen if you spend all of your time studying in your room. Get out and get involved! It's always nice to relieve some stress and relax your mind by doing something active that you enjoy. There's something for everyone, hundreds of clubs, and even if there isn't one for you don't be afraid to start your own. Austin is also a very fun city, there is fun parties but that's not the only thing out there. Get out and explore, you will meet lifetime friends and many memories.

Great for these types of students

Great for anyone who wants a small college feel, with the advantages that a big city has to offer. Great for people who love the outdoors. Great for people that want a proactive student environment. Great for the jocks, Greek life kids, as well as more studious kids, UT is a diverse environment.

    Am learning a lot

Texas classes are not for the faint of heart. They're meant to be hard because when employers look at your resume and see you're from Texas, they'll definitely know you worked hard to get your degree. That being said, I studied much more in one year of college than I ever did in my four years of high school combined, but I also retained more knowledge that I know can be applicable even after I graduate. I've only had a couple of classes I've completely dreaded, and once I got to classes in my major, I looked forward to going to class every day. Texas is definitely a great place to learn.

    Am enjoying being here

Before even thinking about applying to UT, I went to Austin on a choir trip, and as soon as I stepped off the bus on campus, I knew this is where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life (or more!). Austin is kind of one of those places that you either love it immediately or hate it immediately. However, I've found that there's stuff here for everyone. It's a city with big buildings, a great night life, and tons of places to eat and shop, but if that's not your thing, there's parks, rivers and lakes, hiking trails, and quiet places to reflect literally 5 minutes away. Not only that, but the campus is beautiful, and there are hundreds of student organizations you can join to find a perfect group of friends that fit you just right.

    Bang for the buck

UT Austin is expensive. There is no getting around that. However, it is a public ivy league recognized all around the US and the world. People know Texas, and it will definitely get some recognition when an employer is looking at your resume. You will likely have some debt after you graduate, but being a Longhorn graduate helps you get a well paying job in (hopefully) something that you love to be able to pay it all off.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to the organization fair, and join a club. You'll meet your best friends there.
Take advantage of Bevo Bucks and Dine-in Dollars, you'll miss them once their gone.
Eat Kinsolving, not J2, even if you live in Jester. It's a long walk, but it's SO much better.
Join an organization that does a good amount of community service. It will make you feel good and look good on your resume.
Use the career resource centers and get internships!
Apply for scholarships even if you don't need them.
Buy season tickets to the football games, go to the tailgates, and go to OU weekend. If you miss out on that stuff, you will regret it (especially if we can win more than 5 games this season....:x)

Great for these types of students

People who like urban areas, who have school spirit and like sports, and people who are hard workers but still laid back will fit in perfectly here.

The classes at UT are amazing. You can take anything from 'Age of the Dinosaurs' to the Rhetoric of Hipsterdom to European Folklore. Even with recent budget cuts, there are still many classes to choose from in a variety of subjects.

    Am enjoying being here

Austin is an amazing city. There is something for everyone here. You can go see the bats, take a tour of the capital, or visit your favorite food trailers around Austin. The are always fun events in the city from art festivals like Art City to the Zombie Ball at the Power Plant. The people are so eclectic here and that makes every event unique.

    Bang for the buck

At UT you get a prestigious degree for a very reasonable price (if you live in state). It is ranked in the top 50 by US News and World Report, top that with tons of internship opportunities and a name that everyone knows, and you have a steal.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) It is a school that you can easily become lost in. Making friends requires finding a niche within this very large school.
    2) Because of the large size and the atmosphere of the city, the things that may have made you quirky or unique in your home town go unnoticed in Austin.
    3) Do not be afraid to try new things and go new places. There are tons of cool places that you probably won't see before you graduate, but you should try as many as possible.
    4) You get what you want out of the school. It is a great academic school and also one of the top party schools.
    5) Dorms are the luck of the draw. I stayed in the same dorm room for 2 years and had two very different experiences.
    6) Plan on walking long distances and if you can't walk there expect to have to wait on a bus. (Parking is not cheap)
    7) Worth Repeating: UT is HUGE (50,000 undergrads). Somehow you will see some people you don't know all the time, while never seeing the people you do know. This also means you entry classes are huge. If you don't place out of things, you could have classes of 400 students. This means your professor will not know your name and neither will your classmates or TA.
    8) There is a big divide on campus between different groups. There are two main groups: greeks and hipsters. The school is not as diverse as one would think and this varies enormously by major.
    9) Participation is remarkably important in classes, even those with large numbers of students. This obviously varies, but don't assume that because your class is large it won't be important.
    10) People say that you can always change majors, but this really depends on every situation. Some switches between seemingly similar majors, too far down the line can add a year to your time here. Switching between colleges can add even more. Think it through a bit before you pick, because flexibility is key if you are unsure. Also if you are considering one of the schools with harder or more requirements such as the business school, but are still undecided, pick the one with the harder requirements, because it will be harder to transfer later. Make sure to look at what credits you are bringing in as well prior to picking a major and what classes you can take.

Great for these types of students

Open minded, vegetarian, like big schools, hipsters, legacies, quirky, outgoing, liberal *
    * Note that you do not have to be any of these things to enjoy your time here and fit in

Although this is a state school, the programs are all extremely competitive. I got to sit in on an Honors Genetics lesson and I thought it was fantastic! Plus, I will highly recommend applying to the honors colleges and the Freshman Research Initiative. If you plan to go onto graduate school, FRI gives you a huge leg up on the competition, plus you'll have the opportunity to be published before you even graduate college.

    Will enjoy being here

If you have never been to Austin, go! Not everyone loves the city, but Austin isn't just a city, it's a community. The music scene is incredible and the shops around campus are up to date on fashion, music, and food. The Drag, right near campus, is one of my favorite places to go for shopping: American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, Cream - a ton of awesome stores. The campus itself is a live wire as well. If you are bored at UT, you're doing something wrong.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, not going to lie. but paying in state tuition, along with the scholarships I have recieved, shouldn't hurt my pocket book too much.

    Tips for prospective students

Even if you live in Austin or Texas and feel like you want to get out of the area, still visit. I never would have thought that I would stay in town and attend UT, but here I am. Apply for the honors programs, they are worth it. Get your scholarship and FAFSA in ASAP.

UT has an immense number of classes to choose from, all taught by excellent professors. The core requirements are pretty substantial though sometimes preventing you from taking the classes you want/need.

    Am enjoying being here

It is incredibly important for incoming freshman to find their niche at UT. On a campus with nearly 50,000 students it's easy to get lost. I suggest joining a FIG or participating in extra-curricular activities.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is affordable if you pay in state, housing ranges from expensive to super expensive. The dorm I'm in right now is 10,000 dollars a year for just a small room. The cheapest dorm I know of is only 6500 a year though.

    Tips for prospective students

Even though chances are classes at UT are as large as your graduating class, this creates interactions with both, people around you and your professors, and most importantly your T.A's. Due to classes being diverse, not only do you get the professor's opinions, you learn a lot from your classmates. Students all over the country apply and attend this college not because of the recognition it has, but because of the experience that is gained by being a longhorn. College is a big change from high school, especially if you move away from home. At UT learning happens everywhere around you, and within you. It helps you value what you do have, and teaches you about life itself. I learned a lot about myself here, and it has barely been one semester.

    Am enjoying being here

One of the main things that makes the whole college experience worth it, is by enjoying it. UT is about three and a half hours away from home, it is not too far, but far enough for me to miss it. UT has a beautiful campus, and even though a shooting incident did happen, I do not have to fear for my safety, the school really made sure we were all safe and informed, which makes me feel safer. Since UT is near downtown, there are many attractions to see, and even when you ride the bus, you never know what kind of people you will come across, or where they are born. There is always something for everyone to do, from hanging out, eating or even partying.

    Bang for the buck

Even though it is a little expensive, tons of opportunities are available to help students with their financial needs. Just being at one of the games there creates and excitement, and professors work with students in order to help them gain the best knowledge. The buses and services provided by school make student living easier, and every event presents new people, which is where you will meet some of the most amazing people in your life.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be scared to meet new people, if you keep to yourself, chances are you will miss home and have a bad college experience. Go out and try new things, and most importantly, talk to your professors. You will benefit a lot by doing so. Participate in school activities, and go to at least one sporting event.

Great for these types of students

UT is a great school for students who are used to being challenged, explorers, and social people. For people who love being around others and trying out new things different days.

A lot of the core courses you have to take can be quite interesting. I took two non-science major science classes, chemistry and biology, and neither of them had anything to do with chemistry or biology. My biology teacher was this hippie guy who made class fun and I was done with his class by November because of the way he tests. Chemistry was basically environmental science but it was a good class. The UGS classes that all freshmen have to take can be really interesting too if you pick a good topic.

    Am enjoying being here

I joined a sorority and other clubs on campus. It keeps me very busy at school and I only went home once for Thanksgiving. I have a great roommate which makes living in a tiny dorm bearable. The best advice I have is pick a GOOD roommate. Probably not your best friend, but someone who is similar to you and you can get along with. You will be spending a lot of time together. :)

    Bang for the buck

UT is cheap compared to all the private schools in Texas, and of course it's worth it since it's the best school in the state! UT has many ranked and renowned programs (such as business and engineering and medical) and with a large alumni base it won't be hard to find internships or jobs. Campus also has everything you could possibly need and a great night-life. If partying is not your thing, there are plenty of other things to do. Austin is a big city and has lots of great restaurants and festivals and concerts. There is always something.

    Tips for prospective students

Find a good roommate who has the same sleeping/studying/cleaning/social habits as you. Buy lots of storage containers for your dorm and loft your beds once you get there. Kinsolving and Jester buffets are the best way to spend your meal plan if you get one. Apply for housing early. San Jacinto and Duren are the best. San Jacinto is located closer to everything (the staduim, the two good gyms, the library, all the places to eat in Jester, etc.) If you're a football fan, get season group tickets. Look into joining a sorority/fraternity if that's your thing. They can be really fun and make transitioning into school easy.

Great for these types of students

good at learning on your own, aren't afraid to approach professors or TAs, have good study habits, like large crowds and living in big cities

I've noticed most students that enter UT probably didn't have to work hard in college. Everything was spoon-fed and strides were baby steps. Do not expect that at UT! Not only do I have to actually work for my grades, I have to work HARD. College really demands personal initiative to study. I'm not only learning more in one semester than I have in four years of high school education-wise. Professors are knowledgable, but they will not wait around for the last student to catch up!

    Am enjoying being here

The greatest sense of UT is the sense of community. Students really push each other to excel, just look at our football games! Longhorns want nothing more than to brag about their school in some way or another. Naturally, we pride ourselves on athletic and academic achievements because we have that credibility! The environment of Austin is also extremely eclectic and inviting of new ideas. I love this city, and this campus for its open-mindedness and frequent events (such as Austin City Limits, which I attended this year)!

    Bang for the buck

A Longhorn's greatest asset is his or her availibility to resources. Every building seems to have its own library, which is shocking judging by the extensiveness of PCL. There are also a multitude of computer labs and tutoring sessions. There are multiple sources of tutoring for basic help, and teaching assistants are always welcoming during office hours.

    Tips for prospective students

Use your resources! There is no excuse not to excel due to unavailibility of help. Tutors and TAs are there and want you to succeed just as much as you do.

Great for these types of students

UT is great for the open-minded! There is just so much going on at one time, that only a truly adventurous student would be able to absorb it all.

By having your student ID alone, you are able to attend the Blanton Museum of Art as well as ride any of the capital metro buses in Austin for free, so if you don't have a car there's nothing to worry about. Also, you and a guest are able to attend free movies at the Texas Union on Wednesday and Thursday. Also, if you have dining dollars, you are able to get 10% off at dining centers and convenience in Jester and Kinsolving dorms, as well as two other cafes on campus, Littlefield and Cypress Bend. The campus is also located in Downtown Austin so it's very easy to go to the Capitol building as well as great dining places on the drag and Congress.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on attending UT Austin. Be aware that you will be require to take a UGS class. Most of the fun UGS classes will fill up instantly. If that is the case, don't settle for a UGS class with a topic you know you will hate or are unsure of. Get on a waitlist or take the class over the summer. I made the mistake of taking a UGS course I knew I wouldn't be interested in because I knew nothing about waitlisting and I didn't plan on taking classes over the summer. You will regret your entire semester just because of one small little thing such as this. When choosing a professor, the UT web page has a link to Course-Instructor Survey (CIS). It tells you how many people turned in the survey out of the amount that was passed out. Also make note of what other students thought about the work load. Make sure you attend one of the orientations that will be provided over the summer. It's a four day, three night stay at Jester dormitory. You get the experience of living in a dorm! Also, there will be plenty of programs, both mandatory and optional that will give you an idea of all the resources available to you on campus. Other programs are included are for entertainment purposes, such as dodgeball. Be aware of the fact that once you attend the university, the study habits you once had may not be enough to cut it. Form study groups, attend discussion sections, and please go to office hours. You have no idea how important this actually is.

Great for these types of students

The school is pretty much open to people of different race, religions, and cultural backgrounds.

There is soooo much to learn! I love it here at UT because the curriculum is very challenging, which is rewarding in the long run. The professors are very talented individuals, and it is just such an amazing feeling to know that if, as a student here, I can push through the late night study sessions and mind-boggling exams, that my educational experience will have been so well worth my time and effort.

    Am enjoying being here

Austin is an incredible city filled with such a variety of people. The campus is pretty, the buildings are nice, and the people are, for the most part, very friendly and welcoming. There are so many people here to make friends with. All of this combined makes the whole college experience very enjoyable.

    Bang for the buck

I love it here. I love everything about UT. I feel like I am getting such a better education and experience than some of the people I graduated high school with who don't go here. It just makes me so proud to be a longhorn.

    Tips for prospective students

Find your group. There are so many students here, it can seem a little overwhelming at first. You have to look at the new experiences in small sections; don't try and do everything at once. Find an organization or club you're interested in. Be brave and go to that first meeting. You'd be surprised at how many other people are just a overwhelmed as you are. Also, get to know your professors and TA's. They will end up being your greatest resources throughout your educational journey. Don't forget about them after you pass for the semester either. Go visit them during their office hours throughout your college career. They'll make excellent recommendations a little further down the road. :)

Great for these types of students

Great for ANY student. You just have to be willing to work hard and study, study, study. Hook 'em

The University of Texas at Austin is a great school with a reputation for being one of the best schools for Business and Engineering in the state. There are no slacker or blow-off classes. Every class is taught by professors who are passionate about their subject, want to teach you, and make the subject matter interesting and accessible to all students!

    Am enjoying being here

Austin is a great place. There are a ton of on-campus activities to get involved in; sports clubs, sororities, fraternities, professional organizations, community service organizations, and just random, fun clubs. It is really easy to find your niche here at UT! Plus, there are so many fun things to do around Austin!!

    Bang for the buck

The University of Texas is a public institution and so is actually a lot cheaper than most private universities throughout Texas when you are applying in-state. While housing can get pretty expensive, the food is much better than anyother college so don't get too discouraged! Scholarships are easy to find. UT is definitely worth the price for the value of education you are recieving and free services they provide.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Get to know your professors early. It really helps to get on a level where they know your name despite the large amounts of students they are teaching in a semester. Also, no classes are taught by teaching assistants.
    2. Get involved! It's easy to let the classwork keep you from getting out and making friends as a freshman; however, you don't want to miss all of the cool clubs UT has to offer.
    3. Don't let the size of UT overwhelm you! I was nervous about the size of the school, but once you are here the school shrinks tremedously.
    4. Despite the rumors, only freshman english and science classes are huge! I am a second semester freshman, and my classes have about 20 to 30 people in all of them.
    5. Take advantage of the resources! There are so many of them-gyms, libraries, TAs, free tutoring and so many others.
    6. Last but not least, study with friends! It makes studying so much more enjoyable and ya'll can help teacheachother the lessons.

Great for these types of students

Everyone!! There is such great diversity at UT, that there really isn't a specific type of student here. Just be ready to work hard to make your grades and branch out and make friends!!

UT has so much to offer to all kinds of students. There are many majors and fields to go into such as a foreign language, engineering, business, or even the pre-med path. The key to maximize your learning in all your classes is to first go to all of your classes and then to take advantage of office hours for a professor and a TA. When you first go in to meet your professors for the first time, you’ll be overwhelmed and you might think that your professors will get annoyed. I assure all of you that this is not true! Meeting your professors will let them know that you care and they’ll almost always be more than happy to help you solve a problem. These problems can include anything such as personal problems, or how to study properly for their class. It’s important to go do that because after talking to them and using what they tell you, your learning will be much more efficient. Another think you should do is go to TA sessions and office hours before exams because they tell you what’s really important to know for an exam and what you should concentrate on. Finally, there’s something called the UT learning center where you get 5 hours of free personal tutoring per semester. You can get these 5 hours in many different subjects. With this personal tutoring, you get to sit one-on-one with someone and have them go over anything you have problems with in the class. There’s also free unlimited group tutoring that is useful if you are doing homework and can’t figure out a few questions. You can go there and ask the tutors to help you with those questions. All these tools are an amazing way to optimize your learning at UT.

    Am enjoying being here

Being at UT is probably one of the best college experiences a student can have. The atmosphere is pretty fast and is always alive. However, if you prefer a slower and quieter atmosphere, you can get that too by joining the right organizations or clubs. Living on campus is definitely something I would recommend for first year students because of the large amount of people you will meet. The people you meet in your first few weeks can turn out to be your closest friends. Another way to meet people is by going to the events that occur throughout the year. Don’t be shy to say hi to someone you don’t know because they want to meet new people just as much as you! Next, one thing you definitely must do is go to a football game at UT. We have a nationally ranked team year after year and you’ll get a lot of school spirit from being at the games and cheering for your team. Being part of the crowd at a football game is like being part of a massive family. It’s something you should definitely experience. Also, there is a concert called ACL in Austin that I definitely recommend going to. It’s the biggest concert in Austin and you must at least go once. There’s also great night life in Austin. You meet a lot of people and they’ll invite you to come out with them. You should go but at the same time keep the partying low because it is really easy to get carried away. Overall, Austin is a really fun city and UT is a great university with a lot of diversity and opportunities and if you take advantage of them, you’ll realize that your choice of college couldn’t be any better!

    Bang for the buck

UT is worth every penny that I spend. For starters, there are so many resources. There are the multiple libraries with the biggest one being PCL. You can check out any book you could possibly imagine, and borrow laptops and use computers. Also, there are the two gyms. First is Gregory Gym and then there is the Recreation Center. It’s a great way to stay fit and play racquetball, basketball, ping pong or even swimming. As I mentioned before, there are the tutoring hours and the group tutoring that they offer that is really helpful. On top of that, there is a UT writing center where you can get help on writing essays for your classes or in general. Finally, you must consider that a degree from the best public school in Texas and a top 10 public school in the nation will be considered by employers when they are looking to hire new employees. Getting a degree from UT will put you in a good position to make good money once you are done. So even though it will cost 80,000 dollars for 4 years, you will be able to make that money back and more.

    Tips for prospective students

There are many things you should keep in mind when you get to campus. First, realize that you must try to maintain a good balance of school and fun. That’s really important in keeping those grades up. Next, take care of your health! It is really important that you go to the gym or go jogging and try to stay in shape. Even though it’s really hard, you must also try to eat healthy in college. Taking care of your health is really important, especially during stretches where you have continuous exams. After that, keep in mind that it’s a really good idea to visit professors and TA’s. If they know you care about their class and if you take the effort to get help, it can help a lot, especially if you need them to bump up a high C or a high B to a B or A. Next, meet new people! The best way to do that and the best time to do it is in your dorms your freshmen year. Leave your door open, and many people that live on your floor will just walk in and say hi. If your neighbor leaves their door open, go say hi and strike up a conversation. It’s really easy to make friends in the beginning because everyone is looking to meet new people and make new friends so don’t be hesitant at all! Another way to meet people is by joining a club or making an IM team. You get the opportunity to meet people with similar interests as you and the people you will meet are so diverse. Finally, take care of your grades but make sure you have fun! Take time out to do things you like and your experience will be that much better.

Great for these types of students

UT can be overwhelming to people that are more reserved, but it is definitely something that students can adjust to. If you take the effort to go join clubs or be part of an organization or even just talk to the people in your classes, you’ll see that there are a lot of people that feel the same way about things as you. There is a lot of diversity at UT and you can meet people of different beliefs and different ethnicities. There is a club for almost every kind of hobby or interest that exists so it’s something to be a part of. Also, there are IM teams where you can play sports on a competitive or recreational level. You might hear people say that there’s something for everyone at UT and might be skeptical. That’s the thing though; there really is something for EVERYONE. There’s at least one thing that all different students can appreciate. If you’re a person that is independent and likes being around a lot of people all the time, UT is the perfect fit for you without a doubt. If you’re not, it might not be a perfect fit at first, but if you take any effort to explore, you’ll realize that there is something for you that you can appreciate. It’s also a very city-like atmosphere. The university is close to the capitol and is in downtown. For people that prefer a place like this, it’s great. People that don’t should at least look and see what it’s like because even though it’s always moving, students can realize that they would actually like to be at a place like that after they see it. So explore and give it a shot, because there is something for everyone!

UT is so enormous that you're guaranteed to find something you're interested in learning about. One program I really like are the first year signature courses--basically you just take a random class in an area you are interested your freshman year. My class was called History of World Cinema and not only was it fun and fairly easy, I also learned a lot and am considering switching my major to film studies. A drawback of the 50,000 person undergraduate class is that many classes are HUGE. For this reason, it is important to sit in front and make an attempt to get to know the professor. They will be much more willing to listen or help out later if they know you make an effort. In addition, it helps to have friends in your big classes you can sit together, study with, or get notes from in the event that you miss a class.

    Am enjoying being here

There is always something going on at UT. There are myriads of clubs and organizations. I played on an intramural soccer team my fall semester and had so much fun doing so. It's important to find some sort of niche to fit in, otherwise the school seems dauntingly huge. Austin itself is a great city--the live music capital of the world. I have been to so many great concerts in my first semester alone.

    Bang for the buck

I applied to other schools out of state, but none could match UT's price and quality of education. UT is constantly ranked among the top schools in the United States, let alone the top state schools. The money I saved from attending UT instead of a pricier, out of state private college, will go toward funding my study abroad and possibly graduate school.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Join a club, play on a team, organize a study group. The first few weeks are strange, but just introduce yourself to as many people as possible. Everyone is just as eager to make friends as you are.
    2. Time management is extremely important. Know when tests and papers are due. At first, it is difficult to figure out how to balance school, extracurriculars, sports, and a social life.
    3. If you are going to live on campus, fill out your housing application EARLY!!!! No one wants to be stuck in Jester.

The campus is quite large, the student population is quite diverse, and of course, it is at the heart of the music capital of the world in Austin. Needless to say there is plenty to do in Austin, but when you are focusing on your schoolwork, you must show commitment. And there are certainly a massive variety of classes available to you here at UT.

    Tips for prospective students

Have a handle on note-taking and paper writing skills. This is probably true of any college, but I definitely found it to be a must at UT. Also, when you're not attending class or studying, enjoy everything that Austin has to offer, because there is plenty.

    Academic Rigor

I have attended two other colleges in Texas, and I must say (generally speaking) more discipline is required to succeed at UT@Austin.

    Dorm Life

Cannot speak on dorm life, as I have never lived in a dorm, but I have visited a few. Like any college, you get what you pay for it seems.

    Food and Dining

Plenty of food to eat on campus, and plenty of good dining around campus within walking distance. You will not be disappointed.

    What to do for fun

Fitness gurus and general adventurers will be excited by the endless outdoor possibilities (running/rowing @ Lady Bird Lake), you can find live music just about anywhere you look, and it will take you years to sample all of the cuisine that is available. This barely scratches the surface of fun in Austin, but maybe you get the idea.

The University of Texas has really changed my life for the better. There are infinite opportunities and everything that you could ever imagine is at your fingertips. What starts here changes the world. \m/

    Academic Rigor

College is what you put into it. If you're looking for a challenge, you can most certainly find one at Texas. At the same token, there are easy majors as well, similar to any other university.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. Most of the dorms are very conveniently located and are accessible to dining halls and the rest of campus by walking (or the campus bus for those who don't want to walk)

    Food and Dining

Dining hall food isn't bad but it isn't great either. It's standard and will do. There are a lot of places to eat very close by and in downtown that will keep everybody happy!

    What to do for fun

One of the greatest things about a big university is that there is always something going on! Whether it's a party, club or organization sanctioned activity, or a concert...UT will always keep you busy!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get overwhelmed, the classes can be difficult but there are fun ones to not miss out on (human sexuality, architecture and society, etc.). Don't compromise friendship for school all the time, be able to find that balance.

The University of Texas at Austin is truly the full college experience. Not many people know that it's considered a public ivy league school, so the education you receive here is great, not just for a public university but for a school in general. You'll get an amazing education, a gorgeous campus, and so many incredible opportunities that I can't even begin to list.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to change your major once you get here. Plan on taking a bunch of your core classes first since you will probably at least add a minor or another major. Research groups you think you may want to join before getting to campus. GET AS INVOLVED AS YOU CAN! Texas will give you so much if you put the barest amount into it.

    Academic Rigor

Lower-division classes are pretty easy, but once you get into upper-division you'll have to study, study, study. I never worked very hard in high school, so when I took all upper-division classes for my major this semester, it was kind of a shock.

    Dorm Life

It really depends on which dorm you go into. My freshman year, I lived in a smaller dorm that housed mostly freshmen. It was okay--it was a little too much camaraderie for my tastes. I've heard mixed reviews from Jester--you will live with a ton of people, but it's also very centrally located and convenient. And then of course there are the newer, nicer dorms, but I know they can be pretty expensive and are a little less conveniently located.

    Food and Dining

It's dorm food. A lot of it is all you can eat dorm food, but it's still dorm food. One nice thing is that when you live on campus, you get a certain amount of Dine in Dollars and Bevo Bucks. Dine in Dollars can be used at the cafeterias on campus as well as some of the convenience stores in the dorms. Bevo Bucks can be used at the fast food restaurants on campus (like Wendy's or Chik-fil-e) and also at some restaurants near campus.

    What to do for fun

Go to Austin City Limits music festival! Go to a football game! Join any organization! Visit 6th Street! Climb Mount Bonnell! Rent kayaks and go on Town Lake! Go to Sno Beach! Austin is one of the coolest cities in the world and it's so much fun to explore. There's seriously a million things to do, no one could live here and be bored.

    Bang for the buck

I'm getting so much out of my time here that I wouldn't get anywhere else, just because of the size and the relative inexpensiveness compared to private schools.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's this white squirrel that hangs out around campus. We call him the Albino Squirrel and if you see him on your test day, you're sure to pass. Once I fed him a french fry and he touched me with his paw, and I haven't failed a test since.

Great for these types of students

ANY--seriously, if you are super studious you will fit in here. If you are planning on rushing you will fit in here. If you are interested in that weird thing that no one will ever think you're interested in, there is probably a club for that.

    Clubs and Activities

I am in a community service organization on campus and I have met the most wonderful people who will truly stay my friends for life...and I have met so many people in different organizations who say the same things about their orgs.

    Greek Life

I'm not Greek, but they are a very visible presence.

    Campus Safety

After September 2010's shooting scare, I can safely say that UTPD is brilliant.

UT is big, diverse, and located next to an awesome and interactive city. The professors here are topnotch. The college experience from UT is definitely valuable.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of all the resources available and become more interactive. The time here is no longer like highschool.

    Academic Rigor

Academics depend mostly on the major. Some majors are definitely more rigorous than others. Overall, academics are not too challenging as long as you keep up with classes. I feel like academics depend on the individual student.

    Dorm Life

There is so much to do that people are hardly hang out in their dorms and I suggest you do the same. Go out! Live a little.

    Food and Dining

The campus food is pretty good but definitely explore the restaurants and eateries near campus.

    What to do for fun

There is something for everyone. This campus is huge. There is a student organization for a lot of things. If you can't find one, start one. The city is close. There are always events going on. Take the initiative and participate.

    Greek Life

The school is one of the most prestigious schools in the nation. It is known for there Business school, McCombs. Also, located in the heart of Austin where there is a lot of places for youngsters.

    Tips for prospective students

Time is key to apply to UT because UT especially has deadlines that are very early compare to most schools around Texas if not the whole nation. Their deadline such as application deadline is in March and their financial aid is also in March. Those are the two most important dates you must know and you should make it your priority. Their school of business, McCombs is VERY competitive so transferring from a community college is VERY difficult, but once you got accepted to UT straight from high school, you would have a decent chance of getting it.

    Academic Rigor

I heard it is very hard and classes have up to 500 students so you better have a study partner.

    Food and Dining

I heard the food is really good from my cousin who attend at UT.

Plenty to do. Plenty to learn. Plenty to enjoy.

    Tips for prospective students

Study. It's harder than most schools, but it's worth the extra effort. The number of ways to get involved are numerous, and you're sure to find people that share your passions as long as you get involved. The campus is nice, but large. Think about investing in a bike, especially if you have a habit of being late to classes. Plenty of people have bikes, so you most definitely won't be alone in that regard. Almost everything is done online here. So make sure you pay attention to your email inbox, and if you're in doubt and don't have time to see an adviser, check online. The answer might be there. The amount of freedom you suddenly have can be disorienting, and if you don't quickly develop good study and life habits, then you can become overwhelmed. But the independent atmosphere of UT which engenders that freedom is definitely worth it. Just relax, put your game-face on, and enjoy yourself.

    Academic Rigor

School is serious here, and it just makes learning that much more fulfilling. The academic program is top notch, and UT has more than its fair share of the top ten programs in the nation. Looking at the rankings for Civil Engineering at least, UT beats several Ivy League Universities.

    Dorm Life

I have seen some bad dorms, mostly ones that my friends from other colleges have had to live in. They don't compare to UT dorms. While the dorm rooms may not be a hotel room, they do have many good factors. The dorms are always near food, and any other amenities you may need. All of your supplies are usually downstairs. They are usually quiet. There is no raucous noise to annoy you, and they are kept clean all the time. The halls, the trashrooms, laundryrooms, and bathrooms are clean. The bathrooms are also really nice, even in the community bathrooms. The rooms themselves come with several pieces of furniture you might need including desks and drawers, although if you have extra things you might bring some organizing stands. I was afraid that my half of the room wouldn't be able to hold everything I had, but all I had to do was set up some organizing cubes and everything I had fit nicely in with room to spare. Don't misunderstand me, the room isn't extremely spacious, but it has all the room you'll need.

    Food and Dining

There are many restaurants around campus that take Bevo Bucks, which are part of the payment for your dorm, meant to be used as one needs or wishes around campus. There are so many restaurants around within walking distance which know how to cater to their college student clientele. They all have good food, and they all try to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. There are so many places to go and hang out with friends, just enjoy the food, and to study over dinner. There are also plenty of options for choosing less expensive meals at UT. Each dorm is close to at least one, if not several, cafeterias that take Dine-in Dollars, which also come from the Housing Payment and are used to buy food in these cafeterias. I know of at least two buffet style cafeterias on campus which are inexpensive and provide food which tastes good.

    What to do for fun

The list goes on and on. The sure fire ways to have fun are to join clubs. Clubs do demand some time, though, so don't go joining all of them. There is almost a club for every interest. If you have an interest for which there's not a club, you can start it and other people will join you. But there are also many non-club related activities to do. A simple google search for activities around UT will show an almost inexhaustible list of fun things to do. Austin also has a pretty good public transport system so you're likely to be able to catch a cab or bus to an activity if you don't have a car. There are also a plenty of organizations for people of all walks of faith and belief, or lack thereof. The local scene is 6th street, which attracts a drove of students every weekend. Some students (presumable the one's over 21 years of age), go there to drink, although plenty don't and 6th street has plenty of other things to do.

    Bang for the buck

You get out of UT what you put in. If you're active, responsible with your time, and engaged you will have a great time. However, if you choose to put in little effort and stay in your room all the time, you won't have a good time. It's as simple as that.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual location, but my favorite place to get coffee, food, and to hang out, is Spiderhouse Cafe. There is a large yard out front where lights are strung up, eclectic signs are hung up, and music plays. It creates this wonderful atmosphere where it's easy to loosen up, relax, and have fun with friends. They make one of my favorite iced coffees there, also. Not far from Spiderhouse is a place called ToyJoy. ToyJoy is one of Austin's celebrated pieces of quirky originality. The people inside are cordial and perusing its shelves will bring you back to a childlike stage. It does mostly sell toys, but it attracts college students equally. UT has special chants which every incoming freshman is required to learn. These chants are used in every sporting event, and really show off the school pride.

Great for these types of students

Students looking for the full college experience. Although it is also good for those students who have a passion for learning and are likely to spend all their time in the library (although students don't usually need to). Those passionate students are sure to find the knowledge they are looking for.

    Clubs and Activities

I talked about this mostly in the section titled What to do for fun. I stick by what I said. There is a club for every interest; and if you happen to find an interest for which there is no club, then you can make one yourself, and others will join you.

    Greek Life

I haven't been personally involved with Greek life, but having been to tabling and knowing Greek members, I have noticed a few things. There are Fraternities and Sororities which focus on many things. There were social, service, Christian, and other fraternities and sororities for each major. I know at least one person in a fraternity, and when they describe what they like about UT, their fraternity is one of the first things they mention.

    Campus Safety

The UT campus has its own police, and each incoming student is given a list of numbers to contact for any kind of emergency or need. Students are also told where several offices that can assist them are. This semester, I was sure that I'd lost my laptop bag, which had some assignments that I needed to turn in. However, I got an email from the UT Police office saying that they had found it. It was just so nice to know that they're helping, even if it is in a small way like that. Every alert is sent immediately over email or text message to every students phone to insure that the students remain aware of danger, and to equip them to avoid it. Still, Austin is really a safe city, and UT is even safer.

The University of Texas at Austin is a great place to go to college! It's an all around win. You will be surround by great students, great faculty, great facilities, and a great city!

    Tips for prospective students

Classes at UT Austin are probably tougher than what you took in high school. Try to prep for courses at UT Austin by taking AP or IB classes if you high school offers them.

    Academic Rigor

How academically rigorous your college career will depend HIGHLY on your major. For example, engineering and natural sciences classes are notoriously though, while communications and liberal arts classes are know to be easier. Some classes require copious amounts of studying, but with proper studying habits and dedication any class can be manageable.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at UT Austin was one of the best experience of my life. I lived at Jester, which is notorious across the state for its crappy facilities, high volumes of students, and party atmosphere, but I found it to be fun! The rumors and stigmas that I heard surrounding dorm life turned out to be almost completely false. Overall, I found the dorm to be a fun, productive, efficient, and safe place to live. Every incoming freshman should consider living in a dorm their first year.

    Food and Dining

Austin is home to some of the best restaurants and food trucks in the nation. If you are lucky enough to live in or visit ATX, definitely check out the local food trucks. The food is great and has a unique flare to it that can only be found in Austin.

    What to do for fun

What isn't there to do for fun?!?! Austin is a great outdoors city, with lots of parks, recreation, and a HUGE music scene. Rather it be hiking at the green belt, jamming at ACL in the fall, or stand up paddle boarding on the river, everyone is sure to find something they'll love.

    Bang for the buck

In state tuition at UT Austin is amongst one of the best deals in the nation! Tuition does not come close to covering operating costs, and fortunately it doesn't need to. The University of Texas at Austin is funded off of millions of dollars of private donations and well as money from the state. Smaller schools can simply not compete with Texas' alumni and tax payer base!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Clubs and Activities

At the University of Texas you can do almost anything! There are literally hundreds of clubs and student organizations on campus, and if you can't find one that suits you, you only need 4 people to start your own!

    Greek Life

Greek life is HUGE at Texas, and fortunately the university is also HUGE. If you wish to go Greek, the system is great and you will likely find a great sisterhood or brotherhood to join. If it's not your thing, that's okay too, because only about 10% of the student body is involved with Greek life, so you will have no problem finding another niche.

    Campus Safety

The police system (UTPD) at Austin is phenomenal. They respond to emergency phone calls in a matter of minutes. Since the campus is urban, there is a large transient population around campus, but these people are typically harmless. If you are aware of your surroundings and don't leave your belongings unattended you will be fine.

In Austin, there is so much going on all the time. Music is huge here and 9 times out of 10 you can find a free show to go to to check out some upcoming bands and artists. Also, there are many coffee shops around that are great for studying such as Mozarts or Flightpath.

    Campus Safety

Our campus is extremely safe. We have police escorts at night if we feel we need it. There are police button/stations around to push if there is danger near. And we have routine tests to test out the alarm system to make sure it is in tip top shape.

The University of huge and vibrant. There is always something going on and new people to meet. The student body is like nothing you will find anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep up with school work. Like any university, it's very easy to get caught up in football games and your social life so keep your priorities straight from the start.

    Academic Rigor

The difficulty of academics definitely varies by major, but the prestige of the school shows that they expect the best from their students.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a must for at least the first year. Being in such a small space with kids your own age who are just as terrified as you are is a once in a lifetime experience. I made some of my best friends in my dorm.

    Food and Dining

The food is expensive if you are trying to eat healthy, but it's all delicious. The Bevo Bucks program is convenient because money is put directly onto your ID card.

    What to do for fun

Sports, sports, sports!!! Music!! There's always something going on no matter what hobbies you're into.

    Bang for the buck

The combination of top-rate academics and extremely fun environment is definitely worth the tuition.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I think it's cool that you can be walking on the most remote part of campus and there will be live music playing there. People are so weird in Austin but it makes it the best city in the nation.

Great for these types of students

    All students for sure!!

    Clubs and Activities

Intramural sports are a blast and there are so many clubs to choose from.

    Greek Life

There are always events going on with the frats and sororities. I am not part of it, but there is always something.

The University of Texas at Austin has a bustling, diverse campus filled with students involved in the university and community. There are many opportunities on campus to attend seminars, buy baked goods for a cause, or even donate blood! Many professors are here for research, so there are plenty of opportunities for undergraduate research with these professors.

    Tips for prospective students

It is an exciting time to start college, but make sure that you always put school first! Many people have stressed it, but college is definitely different from high school. It is very easy to get caught up in extracurricular activities (which is a good thing too!), but moderation is key. You will be coming for an education, so always put that first.

    Academic Rigor

UT-Austin is very academically rigorous. It is one of the top public schools in the nation, and the classes are definitely not easy. Studying a little every day is the best course to take. I know I got by in high school by cramming an hour before the test, but that definitely won't work here.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is very convenient. You get a chance to meet new people, and it is within close proximity to classes. I know that I can wake up 10 minutes before class starts and still make it on time! However, the rooms are small, and there's public bathrooms... but it's not awkward at all, and you get used to it soon!

    Food and Dining

Food gets repetitive in the dining halls, but there are plenty of food options scattered throughout campus and on the Drag (the Guadalupe street where restaurants are). It's all a very short distance away, so you don't have to go very far to get good food! In downtown, there's a street called South Congress that is filled with trailer trucks that have the most delicious foods. There are also many restaurants on that street. If you like hamburgers, I HIGHLY recommend Hopdoddy!

    What to do for fun

Student organizations host plenty of events (most of them free) that you can attend if you just take the time out to find out about them. There's Barton Springs, if you like to go swimming, and the Congress Bat Cave, where you can see bats fly out from under the bridge. The State Capitol is also located a five minutes drive away, and you can easily explore the beautiful structure with your friends and family. UT-Austin is also famous for it's party scene. There are always parties on/off campus hosted by different organizations and fraternities/sororities. Sixth street, located downtown, is a long street full of pubs and bars (for those 21+!).

    Bang for the buck

There are many new buildings on campus, especially for Communications or Science majors.

There's an Undergraduate Writing Center that help students with their papers. The tutors sit down with you one-on-one, and go through your paper line by line. The best part is that it's free!

There's also a Sanger Learning Center that tutor you in many different subjects. The tutors are comprised of older students who have already taken the classes you need to be tutored in, so they are able to give you a new perspective on how to work a problem or study for a test for a particular class.

Gregory Gym was recently renovated, and there are many new equipments. Classes, such as, cycling, hip-hop, yoga, etc., are also offered.

    TEXAS FOOTBALL. Enough said.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

On the last day of class every semester, all the students carry foam swords and fight as they run across Guadalupe. It is a very fun stress reliever to celebrate the end of the semester.

There's also a myth on campus that if you see an albino squirrel, you'll ace whatever exams/papers you have that day. I've only seen the squirrel once, and unfortunately, it was on a Sunday, so I didn't have any exams/papers due. :( But it's still a cute, quirky myth!

There's also a turtle pond on campus. The turtles love to sunbathe during the day. The overall atmosphere is very relaxing, and most people go to the pond to go on a picnic or lay down for a quick nap.

Great for these types of students

UT-Austin is great for students who are academically motivated, students who like to be involved in organizations, students who want to be involved in research, etc. This is a great school for students of all backgrounds since the population on campus is extremely diverse and unique.

    Clubs and Activities

There are more than 1,000 registered organizations on campus. There is literally a club for every little thing, and if there isn't, it is extremely easy for you to start one with a group of your friends!

    Greek Life

While many students are not Greek on campus, Greek life is still an active part of the campus. There are Panhellenic councils that govern most fraternities and sororities to make sure that these groups are complying with university laws, such as no hazing. Greeks are involved in both philanthropic events and the party scene. Many service projects happen on campus, and there are many parties that go on off campus.

    Campus Safety

Campus sends out texts to students who activate it on their phones. It sends out a text every time there is a danger on campus. Also, there are monthly siren tests, so that the campus can check that these sirens are working properly in case of an emergency.

The University of Texas is arguably the best college package you can invest in. Being a Longhorn privileges you to being academically challenged at one of the nations highest rated public schools, earns you a mascot that bears nationwide athletic respect, and a city that is both supportive and welcoming of students at The University of Texas

    Tips for prospective students

    1) Always pay attention to where you are parked. Parking and Transportation Services has an innate disposition to nickel and dime students for being parked in the wrong place at the wrong time.
    2) Do not loiter in the dorms after a night out. RAs monitor the hallways and will interrogate an unsuspecting student not in a dorm room.
    3) Balance work and play. The University was not ranked 15th in the world by some fluke occurrence. Study during the week but do not pass up an invitation to hang out with friends on the weekend to relieve some stress.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are rated at 4 stars because occasionally you will encounter an easy A course. However most courses demand your full attention and cannot be taken lightly. The University of Texas has most of its schools ranked in the US NEWS and World Reports Top 10 every year and they don't earn that respect by making classes easier than high school. Most professors are enjoyable and genuinely love their subject which makes the academic rigor a bit easier to handle.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is well, dorm life. Every student should at least experience it one year just for the purposes of being able to say they did . And some dorms, namely Jester, will have their fair share of stories more so than others. Jester was recently renovated so the aging facade is no longer so much of a concern. Community bathrooms are cleaned regularly and the cleaning service does a great job of maintaining the building. RAs can be a bit inconvenient at times even for the most innocent of characters but overall, a year in Jester or any dorm is worth the experience.

    Food and Dining

University dining halls are adequate and necessary if you plan to use Dine-In Dollars. Kinsolving is the favored hall while J2 tends to be the least favorite. On campus in The Union, the SAC and the North End Zone, there are many fast food places and most take BEVO bucks.

    What to do for fun

On the weekends the University never really sleeps. You will find anything from cultural groups singing and playing instruments at 4 a.m. on the steps of the tower to groups of students playing bowling in the SAC. And when you want to venture out into town, 6th street needs no explanation. Throughout the year Austin, being the acclaimed Outdoor Music Capital of the World is host to many attractions that will surely keep any student excited about what venue is approaching next.

The university is big, gorgeous, and always active. There are tons of degree option, and opportunities. It can be a laid back or extra exciting experience for anyone.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved with organizations, attend sporting events, get to know your professors. Stay on top of your work, but don't forget to relax a little. Studying on the lawn is awesome!

    Academic Rigor

Some classes can be intense. Don't be afraid to ask for help. There are a million resources for you to be successful.

    Dorm Life

Living on campus is convenient and can be fun when you have the right roommates, but the food gets real old real fast.

    Food and Dining

Pretty decent after first, but gets tiring after a good 5 months or so.

    What to do for fun

Go to the events on campus, check out Zilker park, go to Barton springs mall. There is a bowling alley on campus. Check out all the cool shops on 6th street and south congress.

    Bang for the buck

The education is definitely worth the money. Living in an apartment is cheaper than the dorms, but the dorms are more convenient. The only thing can be crazy is the parking. Don't bring your car if you don't plan on needing it often.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have OU parades before the big football game. Every semester before finals there is a big foam sword fight. The Little Field House is a random old victorian age house that is supposedly haunted.

Great for these types of students

UT is great for anyone who wants great academics, a big city, a spirited community, great athletics, or a diverse pool of people.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 1,000 organizations here. Something for everyone, literally.

    Greek Life

I'm not involved in Greek life, but there are lots of people who are.

    Campus Safety

There are campus police poles everywhere to be pushed for assistance. An any case of a criminal act there are emails and texts immediately sent to students to warn them not to be at a certain place, or to be cautious. Every dorm is locked by key after 11pm.

This is a beautiful campus and a great environment to learn and meet people from many backgrounds. The university offers plenty of academic opportunity for so many degrees, and the professors here know their stuff! Being so close to downtown Austin also means there's always something to do.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to be a part of an internationally recognized family both for its academics and athletics! This campus has plenty of organizations and opportunities so it's pretty easy to get involved. Also, don't skip on the studying once you're here - these professors can be tough.

    Academic Rigor

As a student taking classes towards an engineering major, I've had my share of tough professors. They can give a LOT of homework in hopes to prepare you for their difficult tests, but they are pretty fair when grading and really aren't aiming to fail you. Just learn to manage time for each class, ask for help when you need it, and make friends with people in the classes for group studies.

    Dorm Life

I live in Jester West. It's pretty convenient in location with the library and gym right across the street, and even has a Wendy's in the building for those who get hungry during late night studying in the lobby. There are usually competitions between Jester East and West in things like Capture the Flag, Super Smash Bros. tournaments, and plenty others. Movie nights are also frequent. Overall, it's a great community!

    Food and Dining

Jester City Limits is a decent cafeteria on the first floor, and J2 is a pretty good buffet on the second. JCL can be kind of pricey, however, so J2 can be a less expensive alternative at about $3 less a meal. Our Wendy's is also open until 4am for anyone up late studying. There are also several fast foods at the SAC, Union, Dobie, and really good places along Guadalupe Street.

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of movies shown throughout the year at the Union, the SAC, and inside Jester lobby. Gregory gym has a very nice pool and room to play squash. Organizations are always throwing festivals of some kind that give out free stuff, have free concerts, and throw plenty of parties. The night life in downtown Austin is great along 6th street, and South Congress offers lots of one-of-a-kind eateries. There are also plenty of groups and organizations to join and have fun in. Football season here is AWESOME! Everyone MUST go to at least one football game. They're full of energy and Longhorn pride that you'll just love!

    Bang for the buck

I give it 5/5 stars, but JCL and Jester City Market are in it for your money!

Great for these types of students

UT is a diverse and beautiful campus with numerous opportunities for every student. Classes are challenging, yet fun and very rewarding in the long run. Professors and advisers take a genuine interest in their students' academic progress and future.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be scared! Austin is a beautiful city and you will never get bored whether you are on or off campus. Always read professor reviews before registering for classes and listen to upperclassmen advice! Never be afraid of going to your professor's office hours; they're not that scary and typically welcome you with open arms.

    Academic Rigor

UT is tough. There's no doubt about that, but don't let that stop you from taking the tough classes. There are so many tutoring resources available on campus that can help you through every step of the way. It's very hard to find a GPA booster on this campus because all of the professors take their discipline very seriously. Just remember to take interesting classes to balance out the tough ones. Try to take your core classes at your local community college because they are cheaper and overall less stressful than at UT itself.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life has been very rewarding! It's very convenient to be able to roll out of bed 10 minutes before class starts and still make it to class on time. However, just remember that you will be paying more if you stay on campus rather than living off campus. Staying in a smaller dorm such as BRP is rewarding because you have a smaller, more tight-knit community.

    Food and Dining

The quality of the food is great, but it can get very monotonous as the semester rolls on. You will get tired of eating on campus, but don't be afraid to venture to other parts of Austin for a great dining experience.

    What to do for fun

There's always something to do on campus, no matter what. Organization meetings, events, movies, and free food is available practically everyday. The city of Austin also offers a variety of activities to do such as swimming at Barton Springs or chilling at Zilker with friends.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many different clubs and organizations that anyone will be able to find something they enjoy. There are many service orgs that allow you to help out the community in a variety of ways.

    Greek Life

Greek life is pretty prominent at UT. Whether you're interested in a social or service frat/sorority, there's a variety of options to choose from.

Dorm life is pretty interesting as there are certain events and trips you can go on together as a dorm, but personally, the cons outweigh the pros: guests must sign in after 11pm, no guests at night during finals, community (stalled) showers, and expenses. If dorms are your only/number choice in student living then they're great because they're on campus and close to everything, otherwise I would say keep an open mind on off campus living.

I live in the Honors Quad, which you would think would be a little bit more tame than the other residence halls. You would be wrong. People are up yelling YOLO!!! in the halls until all hours of the night. This doesn't always happen, but when it does it can be hard to focus. It's also confusing to figure out how to get around the quad. I haven't really had the chance to explore, though. In general it's a good place to live. The people seem nice and there are things do do if you don't feel like going anywhere.

    Food and Dining

I usually go to Littlefield Patio Cafe because it's close. They have sandwiches and salads and chicken fingers and burgers and things like that. I also go to Kins Market or Kinsolving Dining Hall, which is a cafeteria buffet type thing. The food is generally good, but it's a good idea to bring some stuff of your own to avoid overspending or go down to the Drag (Guadalupe Street) to mix it up sometimes

    What to do for fun

It's Austin. There's lots to do for fun. If you have free time and transportation you could go down to Zilker park or the mall or something, but if you don't have a ride there's lots to do on campus. In the dorm rooms there are pool tables and TVs if you really want to stay close. Around campus you could go to the gym to work out or play an intramural. You can wander around the Drag or go play frisbee in front of the Tower. There's always some sort of concert or performance going on. It just depends on what you're interested in and how willing you are to look.

    Bang for the buck

UT Austin is a great school for a relatively low price. It's really well known and will give you a great education for about $20,000 a year, including room and board and textbooks, with no financial aid.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hmmm. The Drag is a pretty unusual place. It's full of stores and restaurants and street performers and street vendors. As far as traditions go I have yet to experience any. I'm sure there are. Does the obsession with football and burnt orange count? There's definitely a lot of Longhorn pride around here.

Great for these types of students

All types! The campus is so big and there are so many people here you're sure to find something you like to do and people you like to hang out with.

    Clubs and Activities

I have yet to get involved in a club, but I know there are tons around campus that I plan to get involved in once I know my way around better. I do recommend getting involved ASAP, though.

    Greek Life

I'm not really involved in Greek life, but it's definitely a huge part of UT Austin.

    Campus Safety

There are opportunities to be safe. For example, you can call Safe Walk if you don't want to walk alone, and there are police phone pole things all around campus. But a lot of people don't try to be careful. They don't watch where they're walking and go into the road when there's a car coming or they walk alone. It is downtown Austin, though, so you have to watch out for the crazies.

UT is a gorgeous campus that's incredibly walkable and easy to navigate once you find out where you need to go. There's always some kind of event going on. There is never a chance for boredom when it comes to the campus, unless you're in that one class that you have absolutely no interest in.

    Tips for prospective students

Break your procrastination habit and learn how to properly study. If you bring a bike, bring two U-Locks with you to help secure your bike and prevent it from being stolen. The University Co-Op is NOT the only place to buy your textbooks, chances are you can find them for much cheaper somewhere online.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are very tough, if you think you can wait the day before an assignment is due, chances are you'll barely get a passing grade. There are very few classes where you can do that, but I assure you, procrastination is your worst enemy.

    Dorm Life

It depends on the dorm you live in. If you make an effort to try and meet the people in your halls, it makes hanging out outside of your room much more fun. Only problem are community bathrooms, particularly the showers. Ladies, I'll stress it now, if you don't pick up the stray hair that comes off your head during a shower, it makes the showers flood, and grosses some people out. Be clean and courteous to others who share the space.

    Food and Dining

Dorm food isn't terrible, but there are some items that are very overpriced. It makes it incredibly easy to eat nothing but greasy pizza, which isn't that great for you. If you can, be sure to bring some non-perishable items, canned foods, and the likes. Also, make sure you know when you get meals if you sign up for a meal-plan, or to make sure you know how much you have left in your dine-in account.

    What to do for fun

There is always something to do be it a mini concert series of local bands at a bar, a student film festival, South By Southwest during Spring Break in Downtown Austin. Be sure to bring your student ID card with you to catch free rides on the city buses.

Great for these types of students

Art, film, business. If you love meeting new people, you can easily meet a handful of new people everyday.

    Clubs and Activities

All the friends I've made have come from student organizations. If you have a certain interest, chances are theres a club for it. Anime Club, Pokemon Club, Filmmakers Alliance, dance groups, theater and art promoting groups; there is just about everything here.

    Campus Safety

If you opt in to the daily email the Campus Police send out, they update you on any burglaries that have occurred, as well as other disturbances and criminal mischief. If you ever feel unsafe, there are several yellow posts that when you press the button calls an officer to your location. There is also a student run organization called SureWalk: they send two escorts [one male, one female] to help escort you where you need to go if you ever feel unsafe walking home alone.

dorm life can be amazing, depending on which dorm that you choose to live in. there are several dorms to choose from, but i would prefer jester east. it is one of the cheapest dorms to get in to while having renovated rooms on pretty much every floor, which means that your furniture will be new. there are several study lounges in jester east for those times when you need to study outside of your own room. there are also options to have connected or private baths, which are (in my opinion) better than the community baths that every person in an area has to use. sinks are in the room, and there are elevators. other dorms have some of these qualities but not all of them. it is up to you to check out what specifically that you like. either way you should have a pretty good dorm experience.

    Food and Dining

there are multiple places to eat at ut with a variety of foods to choose from. if you decide to live on campus then you will receive fourteen-hundred dine-in dollars and three-hundred bevo bucks. the dine-in dollars are to use at ut specific places to eat that you don't find any place else, such as jester city limits or jesta pizza. bevo bucks are for most places on campus and a few off-campus stores to buy items more than just food. there are places to eat located by every dorm, so you never have to travel far to grub. in all, dining at ut is very good.

    What to do for fun

the university of texas at austin is known for its parties. there are some occasionally on campus, but the majority of them will be held at clubs on 6th street, which can be reached by taking a bus from ut to there. if you don't want to dance, ut has what is called the underground, which is a place to bowl, shoot pool, eat, etc. if you have a car, then you can go to various places a little further off campus to have fun.

    Bang for the buck

every place that you go to have fun doesn't cost much. the most that you might end up spending at a club is twenty dollars and that is a rarity. the underground doesn't cost much either; i think you have to pay three or five dollars an hour for how long you want to be there, which is not bad at all. as far as big miscellaneous items such as programs, laptops, and big headphones, ut can slightly overprice those. even with those the price isn't outrageous, and smaller items like calculators, regular earphones, cases, etc are normal price. however, i think that ut overprices the clothes that they sell. a polo shirt, for example, that would normally go for thirty dollars would be doubled to about sixty, but at the same time, they have discounts on other clothes where do don't pay nearly as much. it all depends on what you buy.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the most unusual tradition that ut has the the lighting of the tower. incoming freshman all come together at the tower the day before classes start and a big ceremony is held to welcome them. at the end of the ceremony the main tower is lit burnt orange and the number of their college graduation year lights up through the windows of the tower. the next time they see this happen is when they graduate. as far as unusal locations go, the most unusual one that i can think of is the underground, which is actually underground.

Great for these types of students

the university of texas at austin is great for students looking for a challenge academically and socially. ut has fifty-one (plus) thousand students of every single race and ethnicity known to man; it is definitely a place for those who want to branch out from their norm and learn new ways of life from different people.

    Clubs and Activities

there are plenty of clubs/activities to be involved in. to be more specific, there are over ten-thousand organizations to be a part of, and if you do not ind one that you like, you can create your own; all you need is two people and ten dollars and you can create your own organization. they're everywhere!

    Greek Life

i am not a greek so i cannot fully give insight to this topic, but i have multiple friends that are and i have seen different fraternities do what they do. greek life seems to be one of those things where it is a major time commitment but may be worth it in the end. i do know that they get into different parties for free if you are interested in dancing. also, some people that i know say that their grades have suffered from being in a frat, so if you really want to be in one then you have to make sure that your grades are very good and that your course load is not that much.

    Campus Safety

the university of texas at austin is a gigantic campus, which means that anything can happen. ut sends out texts and emails to students when a crime or anything dangerous occurs so at least you can be aware of the problem. there aren't policemen in every single corner and every single street of ut, so you have to watch out of yourself. if you do not go to places alone and have reliable friends with you than you should be fine, or at least decrease the chances of anything bad happening to you.

Explore campus and find a place where you can comfortably study (without falling asleep). Guadalupe (a.k.a the drag on campus) is the best place to find some food when you're tired of cafeteria/dorm food and you don't want to go too far.

    Academic Rigor

A lot easier than high school in that the homework deadlines are less structured and there aren't constant deadlines; however, you do have to independently study the material to do well when there are only two or three tests a semester.

    Dorm Life

Kinsolving is a great all female residence hall. It has a cafeteria, so all you have to do if you're hungry for those living in kinsolving is just go downstairs. I haven't lived in any other residence hall, so my rating is somewhat biased.

    Food and Dining

Not so great...not many healthy options in the cafeterias. Vegetables are always overcooked and mushy, ehh... Limited selection of cooked vegetables (like only 2 vegetable options). Unhealthy meat options (fatty and oily meats that make your stomach hurt). Starch options include rice and bread, but the rice is dry and hard as a rock and you can tell it's undercooked. There have fake eggs (the kind that you pour out of a carton, not the kind that comes from the eggshell and all). To sum it all up, on-campus food sucks.

    What to do for fun

    Join an on-campus organization.

From my experience at UT I have come to realize that the school has a lot to offer it's students. Academic part of the school is of good quality and outside of the classroom there are many organizations to be a part of.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest that prospective students should take advantage of all the help that professors offer. I also suggest that students take time for themselves and enjoy the activities around campus.

    Academic Rigor

The work load is more than highschool with more responsibility on the student.

    Dorm Life

All is good if you pick the right dorm for your living style and if you have a good roommate.

    Food and Dining

I personally like the variety of food options available. J2 is my favorite place to hangout after class.

    What to do for fun

There is so much going on around campus. If your bored then its your own fault.

Austin is an incredible city with a life that never dies.

    Bang for the buck

It's a high priced school, with minimal aid due to its size.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for your classes! Stress happens, and the key to success is being able to deal with it.

This school always offers various opportunities to stay involved with the student community and provides many functions to keep you interested and feel more at home.

    Bang for the buck

Although it is a great school, there are numerous objects where the price is inflated, such as the groceries and meal prices.

    Tips for prospective students

Most students bring a bike for sometimes it may be a long walk to your class.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who take pride in school spirit and like to have fun and study, but who always chooses their education over any other party situation since there is always a party going on mostly every weekend.

I'm still taking core classes which seems to cover a lot of the same material I learned in my high school AP classes. However, I am learning a lot in my major-specific classes.

    Am enjoying being here

    I could not be happier.

    Bang for the buck

UT is definitely worth all the money I'm putting forward. I recognize that I will probably graduate with student loans I'll need to pay off but I feel that the education I will have received after four years will make it more than worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to get involved. Finding friends isn't at all difficult if you surround yourself with people that share your interests.

Great for these types of students

Students that are from smaller schools and might be overwhelmed by the amount of people in their new college.

What starts here really does change the world. Even outside the classroom I'm learning things I never thought I 'd need to know. The professors are very open, the TAs (the one's who grade assignments) are your best friends. GET TO KNOW THE STAFF

As a sorority girl, there's definitely a huge social side to UT that's lost at other universities (ahem, Rice). I'm also in Student Government, participate in a Bible Study, and play IM volleyball. I'm enjoying every moment away from my parents :) The classes are actually a lot of fun, too.

    Bang for the buck

Some universities charge much more for tuition than UT, but they'll offer you more scholarships and work-study opportunities. But for location, education, and activities the University of Texas at Austin is worth every penny.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. School comes first. Friends are great, parties are great, Austin is the best! But school is the most important. Go to EVERY class. There's so much that professors cover that isn't in the text books.
    2. BE SOCIAL. If you stay cooped up in a dorm room, you'll be miserable. Make friends with your roomate, the folks in your hall, and the students in your classes.
    3. Study groups are a great idea. Especially before midterms and finals. Studying with other people makes you think of and remember the material in a different way.

Great for these types of students

Austin likes to think of itself as a big city. So, if you like the city but still like to commune with nature, Austin is the place for you. People bike and walk all over campus and downtown. Town Lake and Zilker Park aren't far from campus. There are live music venues everywhere. And Sixth Street is just an E-bus away!

I'm learning a lot of academic material and a lot about myself also. No matter how many AP classes you took in high school, the academia here is much more difficult. It requires more studying and you actually have to read! However, you also learn a lot about yourself, what you really believe in, and what you really value. You also learn a lot about other people and their true sides. You'll see who ends up being your true friends and how good of a student you actually are. Coming to UT isn't just about receiving a good education, it's also about finding yourself in the real world.

The student body at UT encompasses over 50,000 people. You meet all sorts of different people from everywhere. I've met people from Singapore, Australia, Korea, California, Peru, etc. There is just a large variety of people and you meet the people that you will be friends with for the rest of your life here. I've met some amazing people so far and I know that I will continue to forge more meaningful relationships. If you don't know anybody at UT, don't worry about it. You will meet people very quickly and easily.

    Bang for the buck

I'm currently enrolled in the business school at UT, which has the most expensive tuition out of all the colleges. The motto for the business school is Texas means Business, and boy they weren't kidding. I'm currently enrolled in Introduction to Information Technology Management. Critical thinking is necessary. Without critical thinking skills, you will fail! Plus being a business student, you get access to some of the most advanced resources on campus, such as the Millennium Lab, the Reliant Productivity Center, and several other areas. You also get special career advice through the business school, which has its own Ford Career Center and BBA Career Services.

    Tips for prospective students

Meet as many people as possible, become friends with the people in your dorm, study but don't study all the time, give yourself some time to get adjusted to college life (because it is extremely different), manage your time well, and choose a major that you will enjoy. Nothing is harder than trying to take upper-level classes and graduate in a subject that you absolutely hate.

Great for these types of students

Everybody; UT has such a large variety of students, no matter what kind of personality you have, you will always find somebody who has the same sense of humor, personality, or someone who just clicks with you. Everybody I have met so far in college has had a different personality, so don't fret about not being able to get along with people.

The wealth of knowledge at this university is amazing. There is a great diversity of classes, many challenging, and many greatly amusing.
One drawback is that professors of some lower division courses are not as interested in assisting those students as they are with their upper division students.

    Am enjoying being here

The cultural climate is amazing. Since I'm preparing for a career in the military, UT's environment is helping learn to adjust and accept many ways of life.

    Bang for the buck

UT is quite cheap for in-state students, compared to other colleges of the same academic quality.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be intimidated by Texas' top 8% admission policies. Prepare a strong resume, but don't fall behind in academics. Your GPA is your backbone in college.

Great for these types of students

UT is great for an extremely broad range of students. Whether you want to focus on academics for four years, or you want to enjoy learning in an upbeat city, there is a spot for everyone here.

UT is just as big of a school as everyone says, but don't let that turn you away. Although the size of the school may initially seem overwhelming, it ultimately means that there are countless opportunities to meet new people, try new experiences, and make new friends. There are many different majors, and although classes are rigorous, they will prepare you for grad school or a job after college. Teachers are available for office hours and TAs are always willing to help you out if you need any extra assistance or simply want to learn more about the subject matter. There is a great Greek system, but if you decide not to rush there are still tons of groups, clubs, and activities available on and off campus in Austin that will allow you to push your own limits and grow as a person.

    Am enjoying being here

I've been at UT for 2 years and am confident that I made the right choice in choosing this school. The people of Austin are friendly and quirky. You never know who you are going to meet and learn from.

    Bang for the buck

The quality of education at UT is unparallelled for the cost. In-state students especially will get great 'bang for the buck'. There are smaller programs within the college such as Plan II Honors and Dean's Scholars that are tighter-knit groups with a private school feel that offer more difficult and intense classes at the rate of a public school. Although competition is intense, I would suggest application into these smaller programs if you are looking for a private university academic setting.

    Tips for prospective students

Students should not be afraid to explore Austin and their personal interests while at school. It is just as important to cultivate one's personal life as it is to focus on academics.

Great for these types of students

UT is so diverse. Whether you plan to rush, are an artist, enjoy quantum physics, or are a history buff, you will find your niche! It is impossible not to do so at a school with so much to offer!

I did a lot of research into this college, and I believe that it will hold great opportunities for me. It is basically in the top 5 for everything, academics and sports. I also heard of some breaking-edge research that goes on in the engineering department, not from their college newspaper, but from a nationally recognized newspaper: Popular Mechanics.

    Will enjoy being here

I enjoy big city atmosphere with big school atmosphere, I heard it is very liberal as well (which makes it better suited to fit me than Texas A&M). I have had a lot of friends go here and/or interested in coming here. I also have had a counselor who was an intern from UT. She has told me how amazing the city and the campus is.

    Bang for the buck

It might be expensive, but I believe it is well worth it. For the quality of education and the atmosphere here. Only if you make it well worth it though!

Great for these types of students

I can't say who will like this, but I can describe myself to people who have the same personality as me. I enjoy (not too extreme) liberal politics (even though I consider myself progressive because I don't want to completely subscribe myself to one idea), people who enjoy big-city atmosphere, people who enjoy a good quality education, people that LOVE seeing their team win game after game, and people who love seeing other people (because UT does carry A LOT of students).

I am part of a Computer Science honors program at UT and it is really enjoyable and fulfilling. The classes are really small and a lot more personal than the classes of 150-200 that most freshman in most majors take.

I love the campus. It is really beautiful, wide and open, and the buildings are great. They are in the process of updating several of the buildings and are adding many more as well.

    Bang for the buck

This school is definitely worth attending, especially if you're an in-state student. It is a top research institution filled with some of the top faculty in the nation. The classes are enjoyable if you take the right ones for you, and you learn so much when you enjoy your classes

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely try for some sort of honors program, such as TIP if you are in Liberal Arts or Natural Sciences. The small-group experience created by honors programs is worth it, the classes you take are smaller and much more invigorating than if you were an anonymous student in a large class.

Austin is a great city to go to college in. The campus itself is beautiful and there is always something entertaining going on; there is an organization for any interest and free movies and cheap bowling in the Union. Off campus there is something for everyone. Austin is known for its live music and beyond that it is a very fun and unique atmosphere. The different areas of Austin are so diverse its hard to be bored.

Students who appreciate moderation and balance. The University of Texas provides an opportunity to receive a great education without being bogged down or overwhelmed. It is challenging, but definitely manageable. The school work does not prevent students from having a social life or working. Students are able to have fun and appreciate their college years without throwing away the tuition money on a poor education.
