Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot If you check out your teachers on ratemyprof, I find you can get the best education for your dollar. The teachers I picked based on good reviews are excellent, and motivate me to learn.
Am enjoying being here There are a lot of resources availiable for students. The one I find invaluable is the math tutoring center, because that is my weak area academically.
*I'm reviewing the va beach tcc campusBang for the buck I highly suggest to people who are paying for their own education, to check out whether they can get their intro classes done here. Way more affordable than going straight to a regular university. Just make sure your credits will transfer.
Tips for prospective students don't buy your texts from the bookstore if money is an issue for you.
you can rent most textbooks off of different online sites for waaay cheaper.Great for these types of students proactive, motivated, money-strapped

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot So far, all but two of my teachers that I have had were wonderful. If you are majoring in sociology or Microsoft Office I would research your teachers hard before signing up for your classes.
Am enjoying being here I love the area that the Virginia Beach campus is is. It's easy to find & it's just ten miles from the ocean front! The only problem I have had is that one evening my car was broken into in the TCC parking lot, but nothing was stolen.
Bang for the buck The prices for this school are decent and I love the way financial aid works. Before you go to the bookstore you get a little slip of paper saying how much you have in your financial aid account & what all you can spend it on. I have been enrolled here a full year now and have not spent a penny on my school.
Tips for prospective students Sign up for your classes as quickly as possible, especially chemistry classes because they fill up fast. After you sign up for your classes go straight to financial aid and make sure your classes are covered because this school doesn't play around or go out of their way to help you out unless you ask for it.
Great for these types of students TCC is great for students that like a laid back college environment. The Virginia Beach campus is close to the beach and to the mall, so there are plenty of places to spend time between classes.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I'm majoring in Culinary Arts and learning the many aspects of the food service industry. The textbooks and instructors provide essential information and are both excellent tools of the learning experience. The courses I took last semester contained valuable information as well. All of my instructors are helpful and provide assistance when needed.
Am enjoying being here I feel comfortable at Tidewater Community College because I have met an assortment of people whom I have enjoyed being acquainted. My classmates and instructors are friendly.
Bang for the buck Although the textbooks and equipment are expensive for the courses, it is reasonably price depending on one's course of study and situation. Textbooks are cheaper if purchased used.
Great for these types of students Tidewater is great for students who want to start off their college year in a small campus in a classroom of twenty or less students. Those that want to get a feel for what college life is about in a small setting before they head to a much bigger college campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Their motto From Here, Go Anywhere is literal. The credits you earn here are generally transferrable to almost any university. Dual Enrollment programs are available for many VA High School Students.
Tips for prospective students Keep an eye on your finances. Getting involved with the Dual Enrollment program is very beneficial if you want to start your education for dirt cheap. Talk to your counselor if you're a High Schooler in VA. TCC is generally cheaper than most other colleges, but from what I hear it can get tricky at times.
Academic Rigor There are dud teachers and good teachers everywhere you go. Be prepared to become more independant if you get a dud. Classes range in difficulty, and actually some could arguably be repeat high school classes. Don't get too excited though; every teacher has his/her own way of teaching, which makes things completely different in some cases.
Dorm Life TCC has no dorms. Generally it isn't needed for residents of VA.
Food and Dining TCC doesn't have many food options; again, because residents of VA don't generally need it provided for them from the college. I'd imagine there are vending machines though.
Bang for the buck Generally cheap, but what college doesn't get tricky every once in a while?
Great for these types of students Achievement-Oriented, Financially Strapped, and Determined. Military Retirees can gain financial benefits while they're here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I just completed my first degree in culinary arts. All the teachers in the program are currently in the field. The education received from the chefs is more than just information from the book. The chefs share personal experiences and past mistakes, which I have applied to my own career.
Am enjoying being here The campus is in the middle of Norfolk. There are several great locations to eat at and spend down time in. Several locations offer discounts to students. There is also a large mall within walking distance.
Bang for the buck If students show up to class on time and with their book, they are sure to learn. Teachers are very motivating and understanding. If students make the effort to ask for help, the teachers are willing to go out of their way to help them. There are also several resources available such as tutoring centers, writing resources, and even classes to improve math or writing skills before taking a college math or English course.
Tips for prospective students Communicate with the teachers. They are well aware students attending the school have families and full time jobs.
You have freedom to pick your own classes, so fit them into your busy schedule. If you are not a morning person, take night classes. If you work during the week, take weekend classes. If you are not able to give the dedication needed to be a successful full time student, only take a couple of classes and be a part time student.Great for these types of students Parents (Single or Working)

Students returning to school years after high school.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The financial aid department is very accommodating. They are not only helpful to nervous and confused students, but go above and beyond to provide services in a friendly manner. I have had pleasant experiences both in the past and currently.
Tips for prospective students If you are unsure of how to proceed always ask for help. The wait times may be long and tedious, but I assure you the assistance you receive will be beneficial and help you prosper.
Dorm Life I do not live in a dorm. I cannot provide accurate feedback.
Food and Dining The only food services I use are the vending machines. They are wonderful!

Academic Rigor The teachers are very professional and nice.
Dorm Life There are no dorms.
Food and Dining There are no cafeterias, only vending machines.
What to do for fun They have many different clubs that you can join if you want.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Tidewater Community College is a great school. It is a foundation for students who want to complete their education or transfer to a four year university. However, whether a students decides to complete his or her degree here or chooses to transfer to a four year school, Tidewater Community College prepares each student for success.
Tips for prospective students To prospective students, my advice is to seek a guidance counselor upon arrival. Guidance counselors play major role by helping students choose the right courses for the majors. Also, seeking the help of a guidance counselor, give students an outside view of whether or not their major maybe the right choice. Future students, do not be afraid to seek the help of guidance counselors and ask questions regarding your academic future. Remember they are here for your success.
Academic Rigor Academic Discipline is very important at Tidewater Community College. As students, written papers, and presentations may be required in a limited amount of time. The work required must be completed in a timely fashion. Most professors have a strict deadline enforcement and do not allow work to be turned in late. A popular solution is to get a early start. Read the syllabus as soon as the professor posts it. Make sure you have all the materials required on the syllabus and the text books for the assignments.
Dorm Life Unfortunately, there is no dorm for this college.
Food and Dining The food on campus is excellent and readily accessible. However, the all food and beverages all sold strictly in vending machines. Just five quarters a day will keep your thirst at bay.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Tidewater community college is an excellent school to attend when you are just coming out of high school. And you might not have that GPA that four year colleges are looking for this school help open up doors of opportunities in your career journey.
Tips for prospective students Hello prospective students i use to be open of you but then I was at the beach and I was thinking i do not just want a high school diploma because that will not get me very far in life. So on March 2,2011 i decide to enroll into school and that was the best thing i did so far in my life.
Academic Rigor I am currently working on bringing my GPA up from a 2.5 to a 4.0 because i have the knowledge to acheive my goals if i put my mind to it and many hours of studying. Also that mean I will have to go to school every semester but that is nothing wrong with that because I enjoy being educated.
Dorm Life This is my first year in college so i do not want to be away from home right now but once I transfer to a four year college I will look deeper into that thought. Because sometimes with living on campus you tend to forget that you have school work to do and you start hanging out all night parting.
Food and Dining The food they serve us when we have different activities is very good and freshly cook.
What to do for fun When I am not studying I enjoy helping other students with assignment that I have had in the past and receive passing grade in no grades below an c. Also I attend FCC every Friday to help give praises to the Lord with many of my friends that attend school with me.
Bang for the buck Hello my name is Ashley Buckner I am the third oldest out of eight kids I have a set of identification twin brothers a 20 year old sister two brothers older than me and four brothers under me. I am very outspoken also I don't mind going out my way for people because i love making a difference in people every day life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Norfolk Campus Tidewater community college was the first campus to have a student center it open on May 23,2011 that is a place were students can hang out in between classes it has five floors . The first floor is open to the public which has two cafes on that floor . The other floors can only be access if you are a tcc student with an tcc id card which is provide by the school once you are enrolled into classess.
Great for these types of students When you start school remember to keep up with your class schedule and your student id card. Always keep in contact with your teachers and other staff they are their to help you so use your resources to maximum.
Clubs and Activities I am a prospective member right now which is a good thing because I get to learn the in and the outs about the club and they are willing to help me with my academic work so in the future I can become an active member and will be able to vote and do many good things.
Campus Safety Always be aware of your surroding epscially if you are going to my school because it is located Down Town and people come out of no were not thinking in their right mind and will try to do anything to you. Try to stay in a group were there are several people you can trust and will stick with you if danger come your way.

Academic Rigor TCC helps to prepare you for a 4 year institution. The professors dont play but there are so many tutoring programs and centers for their students that there really isnt a reason for you to fail your classes.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The small classes and availability of Professors outside the classroom enhances the ability for students to excel at the Virginia Beach Campus. My inter-reaction with my Professors is a testament to the Professors wanting the students to be successful.
Tips for prospective students Adhere to the advice of your Admissions Counselor. Prior to enrolling in classes consult with a Counselor to ensure the electives you choose are approved electives for your Major. If you a desire to transfer to a University consult with that University about their GPA requirements.
Academic Rigor You have to practice self discilpine. If you denote ample amount of study time and complete all assigned tasks you should succeed. consult with your Professor if there is an area you are struggling with.
Dorm Life There is no on campus dwelling.
Food and Dining Vending machines are available. No dining facilities available.
What to do for fun Virginia Beach campus is currently constructing a new Student Resource Center that will include a fitness center and spaces to accommodate other student activities.
Bang for the buck Classes at Tidewater Community College are considerably less per semester hour as compared to a four year or for profit institution.
Great for these types of students Excellent for students that are undecided on a major. Many Associate Degrees are transferable to a University in Virginia.
Campus Safety I have not witnessed or heard of any security concerns. Security personnel are routinely seen walking the campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences With a campus for each Hampton Roads city and plenty of classes to choose from, I highly recommend this college for those interested in a community college. You get a wide range of other students, real life situations, and teachers who you just might like learning from. This college is also has a good price per credit hour.
Tips for prospective students If you can, try talking to students who have already taken the classes that you're signing up for. If they had the same teacher, they can give you tips about whether or not you actually need to buy the books and which teachers to try and learn under.
Academic Rigor The teachers are thorough, and the classes are comprehensive. This is definitely a good place to start a degree or even earn a degree.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences This school is an amazing option for anyone coming straight out of high school or going back to school later in life, because the variety of classes and professors are so vast that anyone and everyone will find what they are looking for in their future. There are many different clubs and organizations that will appeal to many of the students who attend this college. Attending Tidewater Community College was one of the best decisions I have made in regards to my education, and I owe a lot to each of my professors for educating not only my generation, but the generations before me and those to come.
Tips for prospective students Even if, as a prospective student or not, you are not sure what you want to major in, Tidewater Community College will be there to help you in any way that they can. By taking general courses, you can still get so much out of the classes. Also, do not be afraid of using the resources that are at your disposal. The writing center, library, financial aid, counselors, and open computer labs are only some of the things that are open for the use of students, so use them whenever the need arises. Ask questions when in doubt, whether of your fellow students or professors, and they will help. Remember that you are never alone, so buddy up with someone and help each other. From here, go anywhere.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor of a school is determined by the student and what he or she wants to get out of it. The guidance counselors will help with the schedule so that it is the right amount of challenge and intensity without it being backbreaking or too easy. Again, use the sources available, and do something different and challenging.
Dorm Life Tidewater Community College does not have dorms.
Food and Dining Since TCC is a community college, there is not much in the way of food and dining, but there are several local places to grab a quick bite to eat. There are vending machines with snacks and drinks in the buildings though for in between class breaks.
What to do for fun There is a student lounge where many of the students migrate to between classes. Some people are on their laptops, listening to music, playing games on the television, or playing games. Usually, about every month, the school will have things going on in the lounge. Dances, dj's, trivia games, a mock American Idol, and free food are often seen in the lounge.
Bang for the buck For the amount of money spent for TCC, it is certainly worth it, especially compared to many four-year institutions, and many people decide to go the community college route first because of this. The education received at a community college is not any less intense just because it is a junior college and you are spending less.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are four campuses that make up Tidewater Community College, and since I have only attended the Chesapeake campus, I can only share but so much. One of my favorite places to sit and relax is outside on a brick patio with cement benches. It is down at the far end of one of the wings of the Whitehurst building. There is a lake off to the side of the patio as well, and it is calming to watch. The Chesapeake campus also has a few trails with an island that some of the professors and students keep up with.
Great for these types of students Tidewater Community College is great for any type of student. They are putting in new parking lots and a new student center, so I am sure everything will be top of the line and technologically advanced. With the many ways to pay for school, from loans to grants to scholarships, it will be hard not to be accepted here.
Clubs and Activities There are new clubs sprouting every now and again, but the Phi Theta Kappa is one of the most well-known around the Chesapeake campus. The Honors Society does a lot of work for the community, the school, and their peers. There are clubs and organizations for just about anyone and everyone, and students should have no problem finding where they fit in.
Greek Life There are no fraternities or sororities at TCC.
Campus Safety There are several security guards constantly patrolling every inch of the campus. They direct traffic during heavy-flow times, and they are very personable. They take their jobs seriously, and I doubt that there is much that slides by them.

Tips for prospective students make sure you are prepared for each class, do your research on materials needed, the teachers do put out the information before class begins.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences tcc is a great school to get started and figure out where you're going. the counselors are knowledgeable and quick to answer questions. the wide variety of classes they offer helps cater to those who are still exploring majors, while saving money in the process.
Tips for prospective students head to the counselors office early in the morning if you're going near the start of the semester, sometimes the wait lengthy. i always sign up for my classes online, at home, using a combination of professor rating websites and the tcc catalog, this way, i can best suit my teachers to my style of learning and my schedule.don't forget to take online classes, too! the extra knowledge and the challenge of remembering to check for assignments is good practice to have!
Academic Rigor i only say three stars because your early on/introduction classes are typically very easy, so you get used to college, and then your later on classes get more difficult.
Dorm Life no dorms at tcc.
Food and Dining there are vending machines throughout campus, and lots of places to grab food just across the street. they don't currently have a cafeteria, but are building a student center now that is supposed to have one.
What to do for fun tcc has a myriad of great extra-curricular activities, such as intramural sports, interest clubs, student counsel, and more.
Bang for the buck tcc, if anything, in affordable. it's a great place to start for a great price.
Great for these types of students great for all kinds of students, incredibly diverse.

What to do for fun the student center is the proverbial watering hole for a reason it is tons of fun.
Bang for the buck it is a spectacular option for reducing cost.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences tidewater community college is the way to go! if you are trying to save money and get the same education you would receive at a four year college, then this is the place for you. the counselors and teachers are very helpful!
Tips for prospective students make sure you speak with a counselor about anything you are not sure about. they are there to help and if you heed their words, transferring to a four year college will be a piece of cake. it is also important that you work hard and earn good grades.
Academic Rigor classes can be very rigorous, especially depending on the instructor. also, as you move from freshman to sophomore year, the classes become more rigorous.
Dorm Life there aren't any dorms at tidewater. people come from home to school. this makes it somewhat inconvenient for students who would prefer to stay in school dorms.
Food and Dining the food is not that great because of the fact that there are no dorms or meal plans to be purchased. all that is available to eat is found in vending machines. this is not very healthy.
What to do for fun at tidewater community college, you can join the various groups like the student body, women's group and many others.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a lake right in the middle of the school. they are currently building the new student center on top of this lake. i find this wuite peculiar but also very exciting.
Campus Safety there are security guards everywhere. they are also very friendly, which makes them easier to approach in case of an emergency.
