    Am learning a lot

In my first year at Tulane, I learned so much; not only in the classroom, but outside of it as well. At a school where almost 70% of the students are from outside of Louisiana, I had no problem meeting many diverse people, (culturally and geographically)! The friends I have made are from all over, including Boston, Hartford, Dallas, and even Sao Paolo, Brazil. At a school with a very high Jewish population, I was exposed to a religion that, living in Minnesota, I had very little exposure to. Meeting and getting to know people from all over the country and world has opened my eyes in so many ways. Whether it's learning new slang, to learning a little about different religions and cultures, you will learn a lot about yourself and others at Tulane.

Tulane students are mostly easy-going, fun smart people. We take our school-work very seriously here, yet also find time to join clubs, play intramurals and just have fun partying. I would say we here at Tulane live by the motto Work hard, play harder.

    Bang for the buck

It's no secret that Tulane is expensive. However, Tulane has a very large endowment that they use to offer students scholarships to make it more affordable.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There are so many clubs and organizations at Tulane to literally have something for everyone. I joined the club Ice Hockey team, played intramural sports, reffed intramural sports as a part-time job, and joined a fraternity. Tulane has everything from political clubs, to sports clubs, to environmental clubs, to acting and drama. Don't hesitate to go to the activities and clubs fair and sign up for some things you're interested in. Also, check out the Greek system. Keep an open mind, and go through the rush process. You don't have to join if you decide it's not for you, but going through rush is the best way to decide if you would like to join a Greek organization or not. Just keep your mind open to meeting new people, trying new things and getting involved in things that interest you.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to give back to the New Orleans community. Living in New Orleans provides you with so many volunteer and rebuilding opportunities, most of which can be found through organizations on campus! People who want to have the full college experience, meet new people, have fun while at school, work hard, and get a great college education from one of the nation's top universities. Most students here are from over 500 miles away, so if you like to meet new people, come to Tulane.

My professors at Tulane are the most involved, understanding teachers I have ever had. I love going to class, I know what is expected of me, and they know what I expect of them (I know it sounds stupid, but it really is a big deal). My courses are challenging, but I enjoy them. I am even having a hard time deciding what to minor in because I love so many subjects because the teachers are so passionate about them.

    Am enjoying being here

New Orleans is the one place I feel that you can walk down the street wearing ANYTHING, and no one questions it. It's the place where you can act the way you want, when you want, and everyone is ok with that. Tulane embraces that quality of New Orleans nicely, and I love being a part of that. There are so many things that you can do and actually have a good time, that do not cost any money and are on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is expensive, but if you work hard in high school, they give out generous scholarships because this campus really needs good students, not just the rich ones.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep track of time! Seriously, time management is key when there are so many things you want to do!

Great for these types of students

Students who are laid back, studious, fun, and quirky are the best kinds of people around here! Tulane isn't full of stressed out kids competing with one another, everyone helps one another. If that fits your personality, you should definitely come see what it's like!

The professors are all very knowledgeable in the subjects they teach. They also make themselves readily available to assist students with questions and other issues. The variety of subjects offered allows each and every student to study what they want and to explore new subject areas.

    Am enjoying being here

The school offers so many fun activities on campus. There are sporting events, concerts, and even slip n' slides and giant twister games. There is also a huge variety of activities to do off campus. The city of New Orleans offers so many things, museums, the zoo, a riverwalk, the famous French Quarter, beautiful architecture, fantastic festivals, and incredible food! The people are all friendly and the university staff are always there to help and guide students.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is expensive, yes, but you are getting a wonderful education and wonderful contacts for after graduation. Tulane professors and staff have access to so many internships and career opportunities that they willingly share with students. The social life of campus is also very strong and there is never a dull moment. Financial Aid and scholarships are also available to students to assist with costs.

    Tips for prospective students

Tour the school to make sure the campus has the right feel for you. Don't be afraid to take a risk and go far from home.

Great for these types of students

This is a school great for students who want to earn an education in a fun and exciting city with an extremely unique culture. If you like to work hard but also like to play hard, this is a great choice. This school takes much determination and hard work to succeed, but there are so many incredible opportunities and fun things to do, both on and off campus.

The professors actually care about their students and always give their office hours in their syllabus so you can come visit them whenever you have a question. When you visit them, they're very accommodating and try to help you understand. They make their lectures really interesting and relate the subject matter to the real world so you understand why this information is important. Also, students usually form study groups before tests, which are really helpful. You can most likely find someone studying the same subject you're studying in the study lounges or library.
The majority of the student body is from somewhere other than Louisiana, which is incredible because it gives you a chance to interact with peers that come from all over the country. I love our geographic diversity because it allows me to have friends from Utah and Boston whom I otherwise never would have the opportunity to meet. People from elsewhere have different opinions and viewpoints on subjects and learning from your peers is a great experience.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being at Tulane. The students always want to meet new people so it's really easy to make good friends. If you ever need any help, you're likely to get it just by asking a student walking to class. There are so many ways to get involved on campus. There is an activities fair once a semester where you can sign up to get emails from the clubs. These clubs advertise their events by 'chalking' the sidewalk in eye-catching colors. They also do tabling by the student union and sometimes give away free food.
New Orleans itself is a place of its own original category. There are festivals probably once a month and a few of the big ones are VooDoo Fest, JazzFest, and Mardi Gras. It's really fun to ride the streetcar down to the French Quarter with your friends on weekends. You can shop the French Market and visit Cafe Du Monde for beignets.
Our campus is beautiful. We have sculptures all over the Academic Quad and there's always a project going on to help beautify and make our campus more eco-friendly.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is a bit pricey, but they give out scholarships. We have some really nice facilities, like the library, gym (Reilly), and student union (LBC).

    Tips for prospective students

Go to the activities fair because it's an easy way to get involved in one of our many clubs. If you're having trouble in a class, go see that professor during his/her office hours. The ERC is a student resource center where you can get free tutoring, so be sure and visit when you need help.

Great for these types of students

If your philosophy is 'work hard, play hard,' this is the school for you. The work is hard, but there's so many opportunities to experience new things and have fun that it's worth it. There's always something going on, which is good. However, you have to know how to focus on your studies when you've got a test because there's always someone who will be going out that night.

In general, the professors at Tulane are superb instructors. Almost all of them will take time out of their day to help a student in need, and many try to keep students aware of his or her progress.

However, don't think these learned men and women are there to hold your hand - learning is definitely the responsibility of the student. As a research university, Tulane exists for a reason other to churn out liberal arts degrees. Tulane's teaching goal, as far as I can tell, is to produce self sufficient individuals who will be valuable to their respective field.

Developing discipline is very important - I, like another reviewer, may or may not have played 5 hours of pool when I could have been learning the intricacies of cellular respiration.

    Am enjoying being here

Bursting at the seams with culture, New Orleans is a phenomenal city to live in. It's walkable, though the sidewalks are a little worse for wear Uptown near Tulane's campus. The streetcar will take you from campus to the French Quarter for $1.25 in usually less than an hour, and the ride itself can be pretty interesting. The Quarter is fantastic at any time of year, not just Mardi Gras. Actually, it's better at not Mardi Gras. Campus is directly across from Audubon Park, a great place for picnics or to go jogging, if you're so inclined. The area immediately around campus is chock full of interesting cafes and hangouts, and finding them is a little like a map-less treasure hunt - walk around, see what you find.

Tulane itself is pretty great - campus is beautiful, housing isn't the worst I've seen, and the newer, more expensive buildings are actually quite nice. Majestic stone buildings lend to the grandeur, while the more modern architecture of the student center is refreshing after the collegiate quad. Grub is passable and the student body as a whole is friendly and diverse enough for anyone to find their niche.

Finally, student life at Tulane is anything but boring. Between intramural sports, the Riley Rec center, Greek life, about a bazillion student organizations, and just hanging around with fellow students, being bored is pretty unlikely. Unless you want to be bored. That's cool too.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is a private university, with a pretty good academic reputation which is only getting better, as the school is getting more and more applicants and can thus be more selective. It's been called a baby Ivy, and though I can't vouch for this statement's accuracy, I can say one thing: Tulane is expensive. Real expensive. They throw scholarships like candy to promising freshmen, but beware: tuition, as at most other institutions, is going up. As students progress, it's likely financial aid will decrease. As far as bang for your buck, it's a great school. If you have great grades and a enough money to go to your local state school, you're in the clear. Tulane will take care of you.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring a bike. If it breaks, the Benevolent Society can help you out. Additionally, find and befriend someone with a car - motor vehicles, while generally unnecessary in a city like New Orleans (sidewalks, buses, streetcars, and cabs are all readily available), are always a good thing to have access to in emergencies.

Don't live in Sharpe or Monroe. Please heed me on this.

Try to pick your roommate. Though I have heard of random matches made in heaven, I've also heard some horror stories.

Financial Aid is, sorry to say, a nightmare. Become best friends with your adviser, don't be afraid to ask questions, and do your research. Read the Terms and Conditions, and find out what Financial Aid covers and doesn't cover.

You register for classes for a reason. Show up. Teachers notice when you're not there, even in the big lectures.

Try to bring some AP credits with you.

I'm beating a dead horse, but sign up for lots of activities. You never know which one will really strike your fancy or expose you to some awesome people. Additionally, being involved gives you more contacts, which are really valuable: knowing someone in the student employment office might help you out someday.

Great for these types of students

As I said earlier, Tulane has tons of diversity. If you like sports, they have sports. Quiz bowl? Got it. Want to go Greek? Not sure? Spring rush gives you a semester to acclimatize. There is amateur theater, band, orchestra, science clubs, culture clubs, juggling clubs, you name it, there's a club, and if there's not, grab a couple other people, submit a form, and you're official.

With all this extracurricular activity going on, the most successful students are those who can focus, compartmentalize, and weigh their obligations wisely. Being able to self-discipline is extremely important, and not only when it comes to academics. Tulane is in New Orleans, after all. The unofficial motto is Work hard, Play harder. People who embrace this motto without losing sight of their academic career will have more than a great college experience. It'll be the time of their lives.

Tulane doesn't accept credit for college classes not taken in an actual college, so I had to retake general biology and general chemistry despite having already taken dual-enrolled classes in high school. If you want to skip those, take the AP tests and you should be fine.

Anything that I didn't learn wasn't the fault of the school or professors, but the fault of my continued senioritis.

I'd say that Tulane gives you every opportunity to learn whatever you would like. It's just up to you to spend time learning instead of playing pool for five hours with friends. Not that I would have done that or anything...

    Am enjoying being here

According to my mom, Tulane is an urban campus, but it doesn't really seem like it. I'd have to agree. Everything is close together and easily walkable, but the trees and open grass spaces make it seem bigger than it is.

I love being able to hop on the St. Charles streetcar and get downtown for $1.25. If you are into music/concerts, I'm sure you could go to one every week if you felt like it.

It's also nice just to be able to walk or ride a bike anywhere you want to go. Whole Foods, the shops on Magazine, the Audubon Zoo, the shops over by Adams + Carrollton, and a lot more aren't more than a 15 min bike ride away. There are also free shuttles to Whole Foods, the downtown campus, and Wal-mart.

    Bang for the buck

Like others have said, Tulane gives out a lot of scholarships. I got the Dean's Honor Scholarship, which covers all of tuition. It's due in December, so apply for that if you think it's an option. My sister is having almost all of her tuition covered by grants and merit scholarships. Now, that's not to say the other costs aren't high. On-campus housing and food plans are required the first two years, and they are expensive, but I figure they are expensive everywhere.

Bottom line, the school is seemingly expensive, but if you have the grades, they will throw scholarships at you (I think I only met one person who was paying full tuition). The school keeps getting rated more and more highly (due to gaming the system, I think, but whatever), so the impact of a degree from Tulane is only going to get better.

    Tips for prospective students

The school has scholarships, try to get them.

Evidently all of the new freshmen this year want to live in Monroe and Sharp. You don't want to live in Monroe or Sharp. Really. You don't.

Everyone says this, but join a lot of clubs/activities. More than you can conceivably actually do. You can drop out of the ones you don't like much, but the only way to meet your soon-to-be-favorite people is to meet them. So try to.

Reilly (the gym) is probably nice, not that I would know. I hear they have ping pong.

If you have bike problems, there's a free bike help desk twice a week. They would love to help you fix your bike. They also rent bikes for cheap.

The library is actually a really great place to finish a paper/do work. You can try that if all else fails.

If a class is full but you need it, ask the professor if they will override you in. It works all the time.

You want Brent Koplitz for Chemistry. And you want Anthony Polizzi for math. These are facts.

Great for these types of students

I think pretty much anyone would have a great time here. If you are one of the weird kids the Benevolent Society is for you. If you are unabashedly nerdy, the library is for you. If you are a bro, you will enjoy frat life. If you are sports-inclined, there are intra-murals. If you like playing music, you can do orchestra or be in a band with some buds. If you like chillin' with friends, you can do that 24/7. It's college, you'll be fine.

If there is one thing that can be said about Tulane, it's that the academics are miles above any school with which it's often compared. Multiple choice exams, 200-person classes, and TAs have little presence here; in my experience my professors have always involved their students and saw to it that each student would learn the material not through endless drills and notes but through research, open discussions, and one-on-one meetings in which students could learn in a manner flexible to their skills. It amazes me that there are universities where students are taught as though directly from a textbook while we learn from diverse sources, professors who know and love their topics of study, and research assignments that correlate to theses that masters or doctoral candidates would be investigating and methods they would be using.

    Am enjoying being here

The location is great, even if transportation is a bit difficult. Tulane has a magnificently large and diverse campus. Greek life is amazingly fun here, but students are still highly encouraged to be independent and seek alternate social circles. The amount of general interest clubs as well as political action, academic, and social clubs is crippling. Most importantly, the student body has a certain unique character that comes from a mix of each individual's intelligence, creativity, charm, and sense of fun. At most universities you will not see such a mix of party and study, but the mixing of these diametric opposites creates a unique environment where every student will feel really encouraged to live out his or her youth while planning a professional career.

    Bang for the buck

Unfortunately, Tulane's tuition is steep, and room and board are both expensive and below value, not to mention mandatory for even sophomores. It's also horribly obvious that a lot of funds are wasted by poor budgeting on the part of both the administration and the Associated Student Body. For a school with so many intelligent Business students, it seems financial planning is completely lacking, and financial aid is a nightmare.

    Tips for prospective students

This is a fantastic place to come if you are looking for a change in your life, especially if you want the last days of your youth to be the best ones. Regardless of whether you want to go to college only for parties or only to do work, this place will show you the right way to cross over, and foster the right skills to become a diverse, sociable but diligent adult.

Great for these types of students

Biology and chemistry majors, especially pre-medical or medical engineers.
    Political Science majors.
Cultural studies majors, especially in Latin American affairs but European studies are developed and Asian studies are coming up.
    Business majors of all kinds.
    Pre-law students.
    Student athletes.
    Students interested in leadership positions.
    Students of diverse ethnic background.
    Party-oriented students.
    Research-oriented students.
Students interested in development and community relations.

Professors are extremely talented and experienced in their field. Tulane offers a wide range of subject matter to study, so I feel free to explore. Classes heavily tie in with New Orleans.

    Am enjoying being here

New Orleans is a wonderful, entertaining, and dynamic city. There's always something to do and learn. Tulane is as equally dynamic. Tulane is constantly offering sponsored events, free for students. There are a lot of extracurricular and student activities to get involved with.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is very expensive, thankfully Tulane does provide generous scholarships, and aid. But even with that I feel that certain costs could be revised and lowered. If you wanna get the most bang for your buck it's important to GET INVOLVED and participate in student activities and school events.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to be attentive to your financial aid status, there could be issues that arise during the process.

Great for these types of students

Exploratory Students, those who like to further investigate outside the classroom and campus.
Time-Savvy Students, those who know when to work, and when to play.

The professors here are generally awesome. Of my 5 semesters here I've only had one professor I didn't care for. They generally know what they are talking about because most of them have had field experience. They are also excited to learn from the students. If a student asks a question to which they have no answer they will typically research it and come back with an answer.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy being at Tulane and in the city of New Orleans. Tulane is really good at offering programs and having extra curricular activities available. The student body is a great group as well. It seems that everyone here has a passion for learning.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is a very good university. It does cost a lot but is very worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you deal with Financial Aid right away. Also make sure to get all of your questions about financial aid answered because you generally have to complete most of the process by yourself.

Great for these types of students

Lecture style learners; work hard, play hard people; people that wish enjoy getting involved in extra curricula's.

Tulane is a great school with stellar academics. Even though I went to an academically challenging high school, I was never challenged like I am at Tulane, and I like it! The classes are small enough that you can really get to know your professors, and so long as you're willing to learn, they're willing to help. I feel that in my7 fist year at Tulane, I've learned more than I could hope to about my chosen majors, the beautiful city of New Orleans, and even myself. Though with over eighteen hours of class both semesters, I had to work really hard, I found the work enjoyable nonetheless and at times even inspiring. Tulane forces you to have a well rounded education, despite what your individual major may be, and I found that even the classes that weren't part of my majors contributed to my understanding in some way.

    Am enjoying being here

Tulane is a very involved campus. The Resident Life office is very involved and sponsors cookouts, comedians, activities, and more to keep students busy. Frequently, I had to choose between the fun things I wanted to go to! On Campus and Off campus, there's enough to do to make your head spin. I went to Crawfest, which is on campus, and VooDoo fest, which is off campus, and found both to be really fun. On campus though, I'm involved in four clubs, and am not the treasurer of two. Even with an insane class load, It is worth it to go out and make friends on campus. I met most of my current friends (and current boyfriend) through the clubs I'm involved in. Its a fun way to stay in touch and get away from some of the stress of academia. Overall, I can't imagine going anywhere else and having nearly as much fun.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is a very expensive college, and the only reason I got to go was because I got a really good scholarship. I don't know if it is worth going into thousands of dollars worth of debt for, but luckily that wasn't a problem for me. However, I do know that the academics are great, as are the social aspects of the school. Furthermore, the counselors are very good at placing graduates into jobs and internships right out of college, or into graduate programs, if you prefer. The service portion of the school's curriculum gives you a leg ahead, and Tulane offers many ways to boost your resume including tutoring programs to get involved in, numerous on-campus jobs, and overseas programs with foreign colleges. It isn't an ivy league school, but in my opinion the education they offer equals or surpasses them. The one negative about Tulane ios their financial aid office. I've had two freinds whose financial situations changed in the middle of the school year, and there wasn't much the financial aid office could do about it, so they had to take out more loans. On the other hand, they do give out pretty good scholarships and aid to incoming freshmen, and as long as you keep your GPA up, you should be okay.

    Tips for prospective students

Deinately get involved on campus and in the city. New Orelans is a great place to be, and there's no reason you shouldn't venture into the French Quarter on weekends. However, There's also tons and tons of stuff to do on campus, so check that out too. It's where you'll meet friends, foster new interests, and make good connections with professors and counselors outside of the office and classroom. However, even with all that going on, don't lose sight of why you are at Tulane. You are there to get a good education, and Tulane can be a hard school. Don't get distracted from your studies too much. In New Orleans and at Tulane, the best way to go about your college life is Work Hard, Play Hard. Its how we roll. Only in New Orleans, Only at Tulane.

Great for these types of students

Tulane is great for students who are focused on having a well rounded education, and who like being involved in their communities. The service aspect of the curriculum gets you out into the city, while the Residence Life team keeps you plugged in on campus. Though Greek life does exist on Tulane, it isn't a necessary part of your life. I'm not in a sorority, though I know many girls who are and who enjoy it. Really, at Tulane there's a niche for everyone, no matter what your interests are. Tulane is great for the student who wants to really be involved on campus and in the city, and who wants to have a good time, learn new things, and meet some potentially weird people, while still broadening their academic horizons.

There's tons of courses, tons of majors, and all sorts of weird stuff you can do. You can take glass blowing, even major in studio art with a concentration in glass art, and so on. The more academic courses are choc-full of information, and frequently quite fun. If you get a chance, take a history course from Professor Harl; he's incredible. The school's core requirements mean that you HAVE to take a broad spectrum of courses, so you may as well take something interesting, and there's tons of interesting things on offer, that'll teach you to boot.

On the other side of learning, living in New Orleans teaches you how to handle yourself in a major city with all sorts of crazy things going on. If you can't manage your time, you WILL learn how to here. Well, that or you'll fail, but when it's sink or swim, most people swim.

    Am enjoying being here

It's a great city, with great people. The streetcar stops right outside campus, so you can take a trip to the french quarter whenever you like, for a fun day, or just to take a break with some beignets and do some studying. There are all sorts of fun places around, and Audubon park is across the street from campus, as is the spectacular Audubon Zoo.

    Bang for the buck

Yes, it's expensive. Very, very expensive. It is, in fact, on the same level as Duke and Columbia expensive. The low number of students compared to schools like Duke means that you, individually, get a whole lot more opportunities. For example, you can get a job working in the stable isotope laboratory FRESHMAN YEAR. How cool is that, for your resume? Not to mention the ridiculous science research you can get in on, the enormous, well-equipped rec center, and of course, the fact that only around 1/3-1/4 of students pay the school's full tuition rate, and a lot of those who technically pay full rate have outside scholarships and grants that cover a lot of it. And there's the dean's scholarship, which is ridiculous, fun, covers all tuition and a semester abroad, and if I'm not mistaken room and board as well.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're diabetic or hyper/hypoglycemic, DON'T GO TO TULANE. Seriously. The food available on campus will not be edible for you, and you're required to have a meal plan if you live on campus. They don't even label a lot of the foods for things like nuts, so if you have food allergies... even Vegan students get screwed, since the food service seems to think mac and cheese with real cheese is vegan... basically, the food's [self-censored], so learn to cook, and get all of your meal plan monies on the wavebucks, you can use them at the on-campus convenience store to buy microwave meals and ramen, then get some fresh veggies from the farmer's market that comes to campus on friday. You can get a boxful for $20, and not a small one either.

Great for these types of students

Those who don't really care about food and/or have cast iron stomachs
    Partiers
    Not partiers
Crazy people who can take biology, physics, and chemistry and three other classes AT THE SAME TIME (this is basically a requirement for engineering majors; you have been warned).
    Oddballs
    People who love the outdoors
    People who hate boring cities
    Cyclists
    Artists
Science majors (especially environmental science majors)
Those who have a bartending license--you're pretty much guaranteed a job, close to campus, that pays pretty well.

tulane is located in the city of new orleans, providing students with a unique experience unavailable elsewhere. the high quality of the academics mixed with the alluring night life characterized the work hard-play hard mentality of the students. the small size makes campus and classes much more intimate.

    Tips for prospective students

be prepared for rainy weather: you can't go wrong with a good pair of rainboots and raincoat.

    Academic Rigor

the classes are challenging and professors are fabulous, but it is definitely possible to get as if you work hard enough.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are far from glamorous and you are required to live on campus for two years. it is extremely fun, however, and more safe and convenient.

    Food and Dining

bruff commons, the dining hall, has a wide variety of foods, including new orleans favorites. the student center has multiple options such as sushi, quiznos, and panda express. get some late night eats at the rat in the basement of the student center.

    What to do for fun

take the streetcar downtown to the french quarter or walk across the street for a stroll in audobon park. there is a copious amount of things to entertain you in new orleans. at night, head to one of the bars walking distance from campus and you'll be sure to run into all of your friends.

    Bang for the buck

    honestly the best school ever.

Great for these types of students

those who know how to work hard and play hard.

    Clubs and Activities

not huge at tulane, although existent when you look.

    Greek Life

greek life is huge at tulane, about 30%. you dot rush until second semester, which is much less intimidating. also, the houses are not residential.

    Campus Safety

it's new orleans, do obviously safety is an issue. the university provides free shuttles and are working to better the campus police presence.

    Am learning a lot

I adore Tulane because academically, it is rigorous and I feel like I am finally getting to study obscure topics that were glossed over in most high school courses. All the professors I have had so far are the complete opposite of what most high school teachers like to characterize them as; far from being indifferent to their students, all of my professors are really caring and willing to go the extra mile to help make sure you understand the material.

    Am enjoying being here

New Orleans in general is a great place to be because it has something for everyone. There is an excellent park across the street to go to, as well as the zoo, and the French Quarter isn't too far off, either. On campus, there are always Frisbee games going on and I feel like we have a lot of free concerts (for example, Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr played a free show here last month). Overall, the people here are pretty nice, and who doesn't love warm weather?

    Bang for the buck

DON'T LET THE INITIAL PRICE TAG SCARE YOU.

Tulane is insanely expensive, but I don't think I've met ANYONE here who doesn't have some type of scholarship. Still, they do work with you as best they can to make it affordable to come here, and you do receive a ton of benefits in your tuition, such as access to Reilly (the fitness center), all the online databases, and free concerts. Essentially, you are paying for the name of Tulane, which long term will probably help you get a job over someone who went to a lesser-known school.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you are on top of your financial aid/accounts receivable paper work and bills if you come here. The staff are really good about working with you if you have problems, but I have had a lot of issues with financial aid losing my paper work and accounts receivable charging me twice for insurance. Usually if you notice and issue and talk to them about it though, they are more than happy to work with you.

If you ever have any issues, talk to SOMEONE about it (housing, financial aid, etc), but try to speak to someone higher up; the people who answer the phones are usually students and don't know any more than you do.

Bring an umbrella; there are lots of random, mid-day storms.

Great for these types of students

Tulane has a strong Jewish and Christian student body, but it isn't overwhelmingly so if that isn't your thing; if it is, you are in the right place.

Since it is in New Orleans, there are a lot of people who party, but you will find that at any college you go to. Of course, you can find a huge number of people who don't go out, so if you aren't into that sort of thing, you will still have things to do.

Tulane has strong medical, law, and architecture departments, but they also have really good anthropology and political science departments, too. Truly, there is something for everyone here.

    Am learning a lot

Tulane is a member of the Southern Ivy League and as such they take pride in offering a challenging and extensive course listing. As an AP student, I came into Tulane thinking I was pretty knowledgeable in my area of study (Literature). Every class I have taken at Tulane, though, has opened my eyes to a new way of thinking and learning.

    Am enjoying being here

Uptown New Orleans, where the Campus is located is a really beautiful area. There is a gorgeous park, zoo, and aquarium within walking distance of campus and the streetcar and bus lines make another half the easily accessible. Not only is there some type of awesome festival going on nearly every weekend, but there is also at least one movie or TV show being filmed here every month. It's truly a city full of opportunities.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is really expensive. Like, stupid expensive. Having said that, over 75% of the student body is on some type of merit or financial based scholarship provided by third parties or by Tulane themselves.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved in something. There are really a million things to do from cheese club to The Hullabaloo to Outreach Tulane to NORML... you can do anything!

Great for these types of students

    EVERYONE!

    Am learning a lot

The academics at Tulane are great. There are so many interesting classes that are offered and my experiences with professors so far have been good. They are all very accommodating and they want you to learn and to do well. The courses I have taken are definitely challenging but I enjoy the challenge because I am interesting in the material that I am learning and in the end I learn a lot that will help me in the future.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love Tulane and the city of New Orleans. There is so much to do and so much to get involved with. There are clubs are anything you can think of and it is extremely easy to get involved. Many students choose to join Greek like, which I did. Joining all of these clubs and activities is also a great way to meet new people. The students are from all over the country and it is great to have friends from geographically every where and meet different types of people. The size of the campus is just right. It's not too small and definitely not too big. We also have the best of both worlds when it comes to being in a city and having a campus because we have both. Tulane is a very short distance from downtown New Orleans and we have an amazing campus with everything you could need on it.

    Bang for the buck

Tulane is definitely expensive but it is worth it. They also have been giving out a lot of money in scholarships which help many incoming students.

    Tips for prospective students

Tulane and New Orleans has so much to offer that you need to get out and explore everything. You should get involved on campus in as many ways as possible, which will help to meet new people and make your experience at Tulane that much better. New Orleans is an amazing city and there is so much to do there. You definitely need to get out and go out downtown every once in a while or go across the street to the park of the zoo.

Great for these types of students

People who enjoy to go out and have a good time, but also know that they sometimes need to stay in and study for an exam will do well at Tulane. If you want a close community on a college campus, you can definitely find one at Tulane.

Since I don't party, it took a while before I could fit in here. Most of the professors in my field (biological sciences) are very knowledgeable about the subject matter. New Orleans is also a great city with lots to do.

    Tips for prospective students

Many students have trouble balancing partying and studying, so learn fast.

    Academic Rigor

If you can balance work and play, Tulane really isn't that hard. You always have to study, though.

    Dorm Life

It really depends on what dorm you live in. Some are kind of falling apart on the inside, but Tulane will fix most of it at no cost. Some Resident Assistants aren't very good at their job (doing activities, getting onto those breaking the rules), though.

    Food and Dining

New Orleans has great food, but the cafeteria does not. The food court food gets boring after a while. They plan to build a new cafeteria soon, though.

    What to do for fun

There is a definitely a night life at Tulane. There are many bars and clubs (if that's your thing). Tulane is also pretty good about putting on activities with music and free food.

Tulane is a great school for those looking to balance social and cultural experiences as well as a good education. It has strong academic standing in pretty much every area except the math department. Tulane is in New Orleans, which provides lots of fun opportunities.

    Tips for prospective students

Think about the type of people that come to a school like this- that was the biggest shock for me. I wanted to come to Tulane because most of the students come from 800 miles away or more, but they're like all coming from long island and new jersey...

    Academic Rigor

I feel like the classes and professors definitely expect a lot out of Tulane students, but it is not too difficult if you know how to manage your time effectively.

    Dorm Life

There are so many different options for dorm life here. You can have a quiet dorm that is good for homework, or you can be in a party dorm and be social 24/7, it is really up to you to choose how you want your experience here to be.

    Food and Dining

College dining halls are never really the best, but it's decent. There are a lot of options.

    What to do for fun

Downtown new orleans is a streetcar ride away, which you'll probably do once or twice in the first couple of weeks, but there are also a lot of uptown options, bars and such. There are a lot of concerts and jazz clubs, and of course New Orleans is the only city that has more festivals than there are days in a year.

    Bang for the buck

You pay a lot to be at Tulane, but they give you a lot in return.

Great for these types of students

We have a lot of rich, Jewish, New Yorkers here. I'm not one of those but you'll definitely fit in if you are.

    Clubs and Activities

There is so many options of stuff to do here, you really decide how involved you want to be.

    Greek Life

We have a pretty active Greek scene here, but it is not vital to a social life.

    Campus Safety

We have a strong police force, but of course we're in New Orleans so there is a lot of crime. I've never felt unsafe while on campus.

Tulane and life in New Orleans is definitely an acquired taste that is not for everyone, but for those who aren't used to wild nightlife scenes and rich southern culture may still be surprised. People here are a jumbled mix of personalities and backgrounds, but at the end of the day it is not very ethnically diverse and most students are rich, white kids. Although partying is a huge aspect, there is absolutely something to do for everyone, and the academics here are still very challenging.

    Tips for prospective students

Be able to come into college grounded, and recognize that you can't go out every night and still do well at Tulane. It's very easy to get caught up in the social aspects. You have to work hard to be able to play hard and get ahead.

    Academic Rigor

There are so many classes to take and things to major in. Classes are not necessarily easy but there are always those few that are known to be a breeze. Science classes are very rigorous and most people in those classes are very strong in science. We also have a very good business school.

    Dorm Life

Dorms here range from completely old, dirty, and gross, to newer ones that are really nice. There are so many ups and downs to each dorm, it really is based on what atmosphere you prefer to live in. The less crazy, quieter dorms are probably JL, Patterson, SoHo, Willow, and Warren. That doesn't mean people who live there don't go out though.

    Food and Dining

Bruff food is not great....Tulane could definitely improve our dining services and options, or even build more/newer places to eat.

    What to do for fun

There are ENDLESS options of what to do for fun in New Orleans. Audubon Park and Zoo is right across the street from campus. Or you can take the streetcar to the French Quarter, walk to Magazine Street, or even stay around campus and explore the neighborhoods. There are a lot of nearby bars, cute restaurants, and fun shops you can walk to.

    Greek Life

Greek life a lot bigger than you'd think, but it's not super overwhelming. People aren't extremely clique-y and it's also not the only option if you want a social life. So many people aren't in a sorority or fraternity and there are plenty of places to go at night or other ways to get involved.

Tulane is a great university especially for those looking for a new experience. I took a leap of faith coming here and am so thankful I did. The level of academics mixed with the social setting is like no other.

    Tips for prospective students

Allow yourselves to branch out. There are so many things to do in the city and throughout your time here you should really take it all in.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are very intensive and do require a lot of work. Being able to balance everything is a challenge but it is doable. The professors are great when it comes to teaching their subject.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are dorms, nothing special. They're never really fully clean but it comes with your college experience. The dorms are very social making it easy to make new friends.

    Food and Dining

There is only one cafeteria, which even though it offers a lot of options it can get boring. Same goes with the student center food. But there are tons of restaurants off campus for when things on campus get a little boring.

    What to do for fun

Tons of students go out uptown which is always fun but there are other things to do. There are tons of concerts going on in New Orleans!

    Bang for the buck

Tulane gives literally the best scholarships/financial aid. The school is expensive at face value but when all is said and done I don't know a single person here paying that price.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Mardi Gras! It's an experience you won't get anywhere else

Great for these types of students

Students who have a good work ethic but are social as well

    Clubs and Activities

More clubs than you can imagine. If you want it you've got it.

    Greek Life

As a member of a greek organization I can say that it really added to my experience here. There's not a huge sense of a Greek Community but it has allowed me to see more of the city than I would have normally

    Campus Safety

There have been a lot of safety issues here as of late but it seems like campus police are trying to solve the issue.

    Academic Rigor

depending on what classes you take here, the work can be pretty intense. some classes are very reading- and writing-heavy; others require massive amounts of study and attentiveness during lectures. it's vigorous, but not impossible.

    Dorm Life

as far as college goes, the dorms here are pretty nice. you have lots of options on where to stay and you can pick based on your preferences - single or double, suites, upperclassman or mixed housing, etc. some dorms are big on bonding events and community outreach, but it's up to you to be as involved in these activities as you want.

    Food and Dining

while our dining hall ofters something to be desired for vegans and vegetarians, and most of us can be found complaining about the lack of clean dishes on any given day, the food here is pretty good. it's not homecooking, but a fine substitute. and if you ever get tired of the dining hall, our student center offers many other affordable food options.

tulane is energetic, fun, and an incredible place to learn. our professors are dedicated and knowledgeable in their field, and the education can't be beat! throw in that it's in new orleans and you have the perfect recipe for a perfect college.

    Tips for prospective students

don't room in monroe and definitely don't drink too much your first year. get involved both at tulane and in the greater community...you won't regret it!

    Academic Rigor

i feel that the education is very strong and the classes are challenging, and appropriately so for its course level. their is plenty of work to get done, but you won't feel like you're wasting your time doing it.

    Dorm Life

housing and residence life goes out of their way to put on programs, events, and incentives for living on campus. the freshman dorms can be a bit noisy at times, which detracts from the experience.

    Food and Dining

food isn't the best. the cafeteria is really bad, and the student union features some options, but very little of it is healthy.

    What to do for fun

you're in new orleans! there are a plethora of festivals, concerts, parades, and don't forget mardi gras! when you just want to stay on campus, tulane has an abundance of things to do, several each day. tulane offers regular concerts, parties, and festivals, trivia and bingo nights, and many many more to keep students entertained.

    Bang for the buck

tulane is quite pricey. i would have rated it higher if not for the plethora of fees and incidental expenses, which add up to be a significant amount.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there is a tree in the academic quad that becomes the bead tree each year, where students throw strands of mardi gras beads up into its branches.

Great for these types of students

it's great for the applied student that wants to do something proactive in their community. it has an excellent pre-med program, and its community service program gives students the hands-on experience required to have a fruitful career.

    Clubs and Activities

there are so many clubs to choose from, and if you don't see one you like (unlikely) you can create one. clubs are really the heart of tulane that keeps it going strong.

    Greek Life

greek life is very prevalent here at tulane. i am not in a sorority myself, but i know several students who are and like it a great deal.

    Campus Safety

a big issue on campus is safety. the campus police does a pretty good job of keeping crime to a minimum on campus, and even patrols the area directly off campus, as many tulane students live there. the only major problem that exists with crime at tulane is that students don't always report it when a crime does occur, making it hard for police to address the issue.

it has a beautiful campus with huge sprawling new orleans trees and quads that are constantly filled with studying students or those just looking to lay back and relax. it has one of the best climates; it is warm, humid at times, and rarely becomes bitter cold. it has a loving, accepting undergraduate class, filled with intelligent, friendly people.

    Tips for prospective students

a lot of the admissions process is based on gpa and act scores, so those are the types of things i would work on. extracurricular and volunteering experience also help with the admission process. always visit the school!

    Academic Rigor

    Dorm Life

dorm life was loud, crazy, but overall fun. i met a lot of interesting people, and most of my best friends were from my dorm residence. it was an invaluable experience and teaches many life lessons that one could not learn elsewhere.

    Food and Dining

there is a great cafeteria that always has staples such as a salad bar, a sandwich line, and pizza/pasta. additionally, they serve vegetarian/vegan options and a daily hot meal that is excellant.

    What to do for fun

the new orleans night life is like no other. one can always go downtown to catch a show, listen to jazz, or just stroll around the french quarter. the opportunities are literally endless, and you will never run out of things to do.

    Campus Safety

For most prospective college students, two things that matter the most for them are a vibrant social life and a superior education. If you think you can balance the social and academic lives, Tulane is the place for you. If you don't think you are strong enough to do so, Tulane might not be where I want to spend your time.

    Tips for prospective students

A chemistry major and a pre-dent hopeful, I took the majority of science classes last semester of my freshman year. The professors are exceptionally knowledgeable and tend to teach you more than what you want to know. Gen chem and bio classes (accommodating approx. 120-150 students) here are more challenging than those in my high school. Many students are bright and intellectually curious while there are also some who do care about their classes but don't bother doing much work as well as some who aren’t sufficiently prepared to handle the work. One night on the weekend, several of my floormates got together in my room and discussed the philosophical aspects of truth and existence! About workload, several of my friends took somewhere between 15-19 credit hours. I took 18. Those who took 19 credits DO have time for other activities (ie, gym, partying, videogaming...). And yes, partying makes up a big portion of the social life at Tulane, esp. for freshmen. Be sure to balance the New Orleans social life and the more important, of higher priority academics! This probably is the most challenging part faced by an inexperienced freshman.

    What to do for fun

Go out with friends to the French Quarter sometimes on the weekends. Go to the gym (for workout, running, soccer, racquetball) or play videogames in free time.

I visited this campus in the summer of 2010, and fell in love with the city of New Orleans, and the campus of Tulane. The buildings are gorgeous, and the people that live in the city are amazing. Its like one huge family, everyone looks out for each other, even if you've never met before.
