This school does not truly value academics. For instance, math is a requirement, but there is an easy way around it. Students can take intro to logic, a very easy class, instead. Too much of the school's money goes to athletics, and it shows with their current budget crunch and the condition of the older parts of the campus.

It's not so much that students love UHM, it's more so that they love Hawaii. However, be aware that if you are a Caucasian student, get used to hearing haole. This is the word given to whites in Hawaii, however while some locals will not accept any mainlanders, there is a good percentage of accepting locals. Many students just do not get what they are expecting when they come here and subsequently leave after a semester or two. It's really what you make of it though, and the beach is only a mile away.

    Bang for the buck

UHM's tuition is rather low, but to a certain extent, you get what you pay for. The marine biology and international business programs are nationally ranked, but other programs such as communications, journalism (lost it's accreditation in 2004), and political science are far behind their mainland counterparts.

    Tips for prospective students

UHM is a good school if you want to spend 4 years by the beach and meet some interesting and diverse people. Marine Biology, International Business, and Asian studies programs are top notch, but most students majors do not lie within these three. With that being said, if the student has been accepted to more recognized schools on the mainland, it would be wise to consider UH's caliber before making the commitment to come all the way out here.

Great for these types of students

Good for students looking to major in Marine Biology, International Business or Native Hawaiian/Asian Studies.

By being in a place that has such rich history and such a different culture than any other place elsewhere in the United States, you not only learn many new things just by being in college but also you learn about a whole culture. I have learned a lot about the Hawaiian culture and other Pacific Islander/Asian cultures.

    Am enjoying being here

The people in Hawaii are very friendly. Many of the professors are really helpful and want you to succeed in their classroom. Obviously, being in Hawaii year-round is going to a great place to spend your time and there is much to be explored here.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready for a different demographic of students with many students of Asian and Pacific Islander decent. Some of the classes can be difficult and some of the professors can be hard to understand because of accents, but if you have tutors or form study groups with other students in the class, then you will be ok.

Great for these types of students

Its a great place for students who is alright with having to travel on an airplane in order to get to college if you are from the mainland and you must get used to not being able to drive for long periods of time because you are on an island. Also you must enjoy the sunshine and warm weather year-round. This is also a great place for students who wants to learn many different languages because UH offers many different foreign languages that you probably wouldnt be able to learn at a college on the mainland.

I am attending the Honors College of Engineering. Some of the subjects are hard and require a lot of effort, but the course content and teaching quality is solid.

    Am enjoying being here

Hawaii is a wonderful place to attend college. The climate is hard to beat and everything is beautiful. The main drawbacks are that I don't have a car, the cost of living is high (try eating out) and it's challenging to be able to fly back and forth home. The kids here at college are great though and I'm enjoying fraternity acitvities.

    Bang for the buck

University of Hawaii is part of the Western Undergrade Exchange program which means it had the cheapest tuition rates of any college I applied to. However, that is partially offset by the expenses of traveling and a higher cost of living (although that is not true of the on-campus housing and meal plan which is comparable to other colleges). Overall, this is an excellent value in education in a warm, beautiful paradise.

    Tips for prospective students

There are lots of things to consider before choosing University of Hawaii. Transportation issues are one of the big ones. You cannot drive your car here and although the public transportation (bus) system is pretty good, you have to factor that in. Also you will be far away from family and friends and can't easily go home to visit and do your laundry. You must be independent and self-sufficient and able to function well without your support system. Be prepared to save money any way you can and deal with the higher cost of living. But if you like the college programs (and there are some good ones) and living in paradise while learning, there are few places that compare.

Great for these types of students

Independent, fun, self-sufficient, intelligent and outgoing. You should have a warm-climate preference and love beaches and sun. Perfect for someone who's hard-working and a self-starter, but still likes to have a good time and meet new people. Pack the bikini or swim trunks but leave the snow pants at home. No mama's boys or shy girls who need their parents every minute need apply. Time to put your big boy or girl pants on and show everyone what you can do on your own. A good time and lots of opportunity awaits.

Pretty good professors, definitely suggest you use rate my professors website before signing up for classes. Good foreign language opportunities.

    Am enjoying being here

There's a lot of stuff to do, though you really need a car to enjoy your time here. The bus system is pretty good overall but it gets old fast having to wait all the time and the amount of time it takes to get anywhere.

    Bang for the buck

Currently with the economic hardships, it is particularly pricey to attend UH Manoa especially if you are paying out of state tuition. They have recently had to cut back a lot on number of classes and extra lecturers which has made it difficlut to always get the classes you want and need at a certain time. It is also expensive to live here simply on a daily basis if you are buying your own groceries etc... Obviously expensive to travel home to mainland for any breaks you might have.

Teachers are part of the way you learn a subject. You should ask around to see how well your professor teaches. If you happen to get a bad professor, try to learn with your classmates and go in for tutoring.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is one of the cheapest along the west coast, but costs are slowly rising due to lack of funds from the government and the increase cost of living.

    Tips for prospective students

You should tour the campus and see for yourself if the school is right for you. Sections of the school range from 100+ years to brand new. Check what your major has in store for you on this campus and tour their facilities.

Great for these types of students

Who love friendly and diverse people and those who enjoy a clean environment, while still being competitive in academics.

My first semester in college was here and Iearned a lot. The professors are helpful, well that is if you choose the right ones. But don't worry, most professors go out of their way to help students. They also give students their office hours and sometimes study session hours. I learned a great amount in the Hawaiian culture and language too, well it is Hawaii.

    Am enjoying being here

I commute from my house so it is a long drive there. But it is very enjoyable. There is many people to meet, and many things to learn. On fridays there are movie nights for the students, making it easier to fit right in.

    Bang for the buck

The economy being the economy, tuition is not that high. I pay less than 5000 for books and tution each semester, being a full time student. There is also, starting his semester, a U-pass sticker on validated IDs which gives you unlimited access to The Bus for the semester, which is really a money saver.

    Tips for prospective students

The transfer to college is not easy. The first thing would be to get used to reading, and try to figure out things for yourself. There is also prerequisites for UH so it would be smart to talk with the college advisors to help you pick out what classes you will need.

Great for these types of students

Students who would enjoy learning about the Hawaiian culture or language. (it is one of the prerequisites to graduate, but is not hard, and don't need to take the language.) Also for students who like the beach. Also, students who play sports can practice year round because the temperature never gets too cold or too hot.

I enjoy attending University of Hawaii at Manoa , we get some refreshing showers every now and then, the sun is almost always shining and your never too far away from the beach. Everyone is really friendly and it's always cool to meet other people from around the world since our campus is very diverse.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other schools where I applied Manoa was the most cheapest, the only thing is that financial aid is very slow,it takes a long time everything to be processed and due to the economy there has been significant cuts in classes being offered.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a tour around, sit in a class and see if you like the atmosphere

Great for these types of students

If you wanna make friends with people from all around the world, then Manoa is for you, the campus here is so diverse it's very easy to meet someone from the other side of the globe.

    Tips for prospective students

If you love the laid back-island feel, this school is for you. Friendly professors and students, beaches are awesome, and local food is the yummiest!!! So come and attend in your slippers (flip-flops), board shorts/bikinis, and tank tops.

There are various amounts of activities that happen on campus; from all the sports events; to movie nights on various Friday nights; to even all night studying during finals week. campus is always holding events for students to interact with each other and do/learn new things.

Great for these types of students

The campus is filled with people of different ethnic/cultural and religious backgrounds, the people are friendly. The class sizes range from big lecture halls, if you are the type to hide in the back, to small discussion classes where you have the opportunity to express your thoughts and ideas with other students.

    Am learning a lot

As a pre-business major, I have learned a lot about economics, and I anticipate my future at Shidler Business of College at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. However, I have not only learned about business. My knowledge in the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, and Japanese language has increased exponentially. I feel so much more aware of the world, and I can positively say that all I have learned so far has already begun to shape me into a much more mature, intelligent, and motivated person.

    Am enjoying being here

Having lived in Hawaii my entire life, I always envisioned myself going to college in some far away state in which I could experience snow and purchase a legitimate $5 foot-long sandwich from Subway (prices are higher in Hawaii). However, when making my final decision, I realized that I could not bear to leave home for a myriad of reasons. Reflecting now on my first year in college, I can confidently say that I enjoyed staying home in Hawaii. Hawaii is a truly magical place because of its temperate climate, the variety of cultural diversity present in its cuisine, history, and day-to-day happenings, and the beauty seen not only in Hawaii's landscape, but in the hearts of Hawaii's people. I encourage anyone who wants to experience something new, exciting, and breathtaking to come to UH Manoa.

    Bang for the buck

For residents of Hawaii, the tuition is extremely affordable. For out of state students, UH is still very affordable, and an impressive number of valuable scholarships are available for all students. In addition to its affordable tuition, UH students can attend sports games for free, a year-long bus pass, and work out at the gym.

    Tips for prospective students

Join clubs as soon as you can! If you are a Christian, there are a lot of groups in which you can get involved. If you like Japanese or Indian culture, there is also a place for you. Be willing to explore beyond the familiar boundaries of your high school lifestyle.

Great for these types of students

Students who enjoy outdoors activities (especially swimming at the beach), have interest in Asian/Pacific cultures, plan to major in business, engineering, marine biology, or Asian languages and literatures

    Am learning a lot

Some of the classes I am required to take to graduate [without any incliation to my field of study] are so incredibly unintersting, entertaining, and not taught well.

    For Example:
I took a basic english course from a student [TA, i believe] who couldn't speak much english, and I took a religion course to learn about religion, but the only things I learned in his class, were the things he learned during his masters study in India. The intro math course has primary roots in trig and calculus [Ive taken trig, and its hard - so designating it as a basis of an introductory math course is strange], and the history instructors for introductory history showed my the entire austin powers series. [and no, it wasnt a film studies course. it was HIST 151]

however, as i excel further in my education, i notice that im taking really interesting courses. its not that i chose the wrong classes for introductory studies to satisfy my grad requirements, its that the professors for the higher level classes care more - they focus on the students and the level of information being soaked up at one time, not on themselves and what they can do to appeal. these professors take the time to help the student excel.

    i like these professors.

i gave this three stars, because although i am now learning a lot of different, helpful, wonderful things, getting started was a miserable experience - taught by teachers who werent finished with school yet, who didnt care about the grading, or were too focused on themselves.

    Am enjoying being here

the reason im giving this four stars, and not two, is because of campus center. right now it is going through renovations. the renovations are humbug, they block off the majority of the campus center, and it forces the students to take the long way to class.

however. im really happy and excited for the campus center renovations because camus center was a wonderful place before the renovations started, and will continue to be after the renovations end. in fact campus center was the reason students excelled in school. campus center was a place to eat, hang out, grab classroom texts, print out papers, sleep, watch TV and relax, and do homework. if it was so great before [rough edges included], itll be even greater when those rough edges become smooth.

all i have to do is struggle through the construction and wait.

    Bang for the buck

at $5000 a semester, students dont exactly benefit. for example: they were getting the same benefits with a tuition of $3500.

    Tips for prospective students

head to the library! this is a fantastic place for study sessions, a quick nap, printing papers, and all the information youll ever need on any project you do. hamilton library, and sinclair are top notch!

Great for these types of students

students who love marine sciences and hawaiian studies.

I am a marine biology major and I am learning a lot about things I never knew before. Biology and chemistry labs offer a lot of hands on experience, and there are many opportunities for fieldwork and internships.

    Am enjoying being here

Hawaii is beautiful. While the campus is a bit rundown, the surrounding area is gorgeous, and the beach is just a 10 minute bus ride away! Manoa can be rainy, so bring an umbrella.

    Bang for the buck

If you are coming from out of state, be prepared. It can get very expensive.

    Tips for prospective students

Be open to the Hawaiian culture and you will be recieved with open arms. Most people are friendly and laidback. It is a completely different vibe from anywhere I've been in the United States.

Great for these types of students

Marine biology, International business, Hawaiian studies... any student who feels they can be self motivated and can fight past the distraction of going to the beach everyday!

Classes at UHM are rather large. But if you're one of those students who are active and participate in class then you will definitely learn a lot. A lot of professors are known for being enjoyable which makes learning a lot easier and fun. Although some professors aren't as enjoyable as others, they will still teach you the content in the best way they can.

    Am enjoying being here

UHM is very diverse which includes professors and students. The diversity in classes allows students to have knowledge on what they might have not known. One of the general graduation requirements of attending UH Manoa is to have a diversification of Hawaiian and the Pacific which can be simple Intro to Hawaiian Studies. This allows students to know a little about Hawai'i and it's language, culture, and rich history.

    Tips for prospective students

If UHM is a school that you would like to attend, make sure to send your application on time. Also, if you're not sure that you'd be able to get into the school try the College Opportunities Program which will allow you to spend a summer taking a class while getting the freshman experience by being able to dorm with other freshmen. Although I've only been here for one semester, so far my experience has been a positive one. I have had good teachers, most of whom teach with a sense humor, which comes natural in Hawaii, considering the weather. Personally I think that how much you learn is based more on your attitude than the teacher it self, but I also understand how how a teacher can make things more difficult than the need to be. Having said that, based on my experience and that of other students, your average teacher has got his/her stuff together.

    Am enjoying being here

Having been raised on the neighbor island Maui, I am used to the country lifestyle; Oahu, however, is mostly Rural, and the Campus is situated right in the city. So if your like me and not a fan of the city, then you might want to reconsider Uh Manoa, and maybe go for UH Hilo instead (that is if Hawaii is a must for you). Living in the city does, however, offer many benefits, some of which include: Transportation(bus), variety of people, and lots of places to eat. Overall, it really depends on your taste, but then again, it Hawaii, and that hard to beat.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is low, weather is warm. Pretty good if you ask me. Lots of the money is put into the sports though, which is good if that's your thing. If not you might feel like they get all the attention, while other programs are ignored. Once again, it comes down to preference.

    Tips for prospective students

Get a job as soon as possible, everything you do in the city cost money. Also, if your planning on living on campus, decide if you want to have a meal plan or not, most of the dorms require it. If you want to skip the meal plan and pay for your own food, look into the apartment options, which come with a kitchen and a small living room. They give you little bit more space, which I know is important to some people.

Great for these types of students

Athletes, City People, Students that hate cold, Students interested in living around people of many different ethnicities.

How much you learn depends on what classes you are taking, what professor is teaching and how much you are studying. In college the classes don't go into as much detail as they did in High School. To make sure you learn all you need to know make sure to do your homework and readings for class.

Hawaii is an amazing place. You can go hiking, swimming, snorkeling, surfing, sailing. The possibilities are endless! The temperature is also really nice, not to hot not to cold. But you might get spoiled if you end up coming here :D

    Bang for the buck

This school participates in WUE which makes it more affordable for students from the mainland. If you are from Hawaii take advantage of the low in-state tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out the general education requirements and try to complete those early if you aren't sure of what you want to major in. If you know what you are going to major in look at the major requirements and try to get some of your heavier major classes out of the way early so that you don't have to deal with all major classes your junior and senior year.

The University of Hawaii is a school where you can explore different things. They have many great programs that are offered. Not only does the school provide a great academic system but variety of people and their cultures.

    Tips for prospective students

The one tips i would tell up coming students would be to always take at least 5 classes and don't be afraid to ask for help.

    Academic Rigor

Making time for your studies is very important. Some times procrastination can cause problem so i try to do my assignments a week before they're due.

    Dorm Life

I love the dorm life. Sometimes it can be a pain but experiencing the dorm life is an important part of a college experience. I really enjoy it also makes meeting new people a lot easier.

    Food and Dining

I have a kitchen in my dorm so i do a lot of cooking. Cooking allows me to save money since a meal plan is very expensive

    What to do for fun

For fun I enjoy going to the beach and playing tennis. I also love going out to a local store called the Health Bar and getting acai bowls.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

On thursdays most students head to a bar near campus called Varsity. We also have movie nights at campus center were they sell 10 cents popcorn and 25 cents subway sandwich every other friday.

    Clubs and Activities

I'm in a club called SSS which stands for student support services. They provide us a place to use computers and print for free. they host events were as members we are invited. I love playing tennis its been something i've loved since high school.

    Campus Safety

Our campus is really safe, if I'm alone and walking to my dorm at night i can call campus security to come pick me up and drive me back to my room. I use this service often

The University of Hawaii at Manoa can deliver a great education at an affordable cost. The social atmosphere is a bit tame compared to most other mainland schools. Professors and students are very laid back.

    Tips for prospective students

Expect some culture shock if you are not from Hawaii. The island attitude makes getting things done with the faculty a chore. The cost of living here is expensive so please take advantage of student discounts and meal plans.

    Academic Rigor

Not too demanding on a student that can balance their time well. Most professors are doing their own research projects and aren't overly analytical of students work.

    Dorm Life

There was nothing going on on campus unless you were part of the Frat.

    Food and Dining

The multiculturalism of the island leads to amazing food! The student centers have regular fast food fare, but some of the restaurants and bars on campus have great mixed japanese/hawaiian/korean fare.

    What to do for fun

The trails and the beach! Honolulu has some neat private hot spots. You just have to search through the side streets to find a gem. Jazz Minds was a favorite music club of mine.

    Bang for the buck

While the tuition for WUE or even out of state students is lower than most in-state tuition rates, the cost of living is so high that it is still nearly impossible to live comfortably as a full time or even part time student.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a full sized Japanese temple building on the outskirts of the campus that serves as the East meets West center. It was very cool.

Great for these types of students

multi ethnic students, especially with an asian or pacific heritage will feel welcomed and at home on the island and on campus. Students that have a more liberal political view or are very laid back (aka surfer or outdoorsman type) will love the abundance of natural resources for education and fun.

    Campus Safety

The UH Alert system will text/email anyone on their alert list. I found that there is a decent level of crime, more so pertaining to dangerous unidentified individuals and assaults, that occurs.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Hawaii at Manoa has a very vibrant campus life and is the perfect blend of college life and paradise. There is a highly diverse student body with almost every ethnicity represented. Most of the professors are very helpful, understanding and willing to assist you in any way possible to help you do well in your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are someone who enjoys the well-rounded college experience, not just in it for the education, this is your school. At Manoa, you will enjoy the college experience while living in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major, academic rigor may very, but general classes and electives are manageable if you keep a consistent work schedule. Basically, you can pass even if you fool around all semester and only study for midterms and finals.

    Dorm Life

Some conditions of the dorms are rather disgusting. If you are a clean freak, shoot for Frear Hall and avoid Wainani and Noelani. The freshman towers and Noelani get pretty loud so avoid these places if you're someone who needs a quiet study environment.

    Food and Dining

There are food chain place like Bale (Pho, Curry, Sandwiches), Subway, Jamba Juice, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Aja (bentos) on campus in addition to two cafeterias and a 7-eleven type store (minus the cigarettes and alcohol).

    What to do for fun

The campus flaunts a large academic complex of tennis courts, tracks, foot ball fields, basketball courts, a gym and a pool. Also, there are lots of beautiful places to see on campus like the Japanese garden or the Korean buildings. If campus gets old, all students have a bus pass that can take you around the entire island. UH Manoa is five minutes away from Waikiki by bus and not much further from anywhere else on the island.

    Bang for the buck

Housing and food is pricey, but I believe the tuition is low (for me in-state) compared to most other places.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is karaoke night each semester with private rooms, a big competition, free food and prizes! There is also this beautiful Japanese garden that is great to just sit and relax. In addition, there is a Hawaiian School of Knowledge building with an actually Kalo (Taro) patch that is maintained by students and many other cultural murals and artifacts.

Great for these types of students

Athletes, Surfers, Party People, Slackers, Socialites, Beach lovers and people who want the all-around college experience.

    Clubs and Activities

UH Manoa has so many clubs ranging from language affiliated to hobby affiliated.

    Greek Life

UH Manoa has no Greek row, but there are a few sororities and fraternities on campus. They do not live together in the same house, but I witness them being together quite frequently. UH Manoa is not a good choice if Greek Life is a priority for you.

    Campus Safety

It is a beautiful school. Not exactly what I was expecting, but exceeded my hopes after a semester of adjusting.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely be aware of the high costs of living. Whether you're being aided by your parents or by yourself, note that Honolulu has one of the highest costs of living in the US. Also, take note that the way of life here is quite different from the rest of the US. There are multinational groups and communities, and their cultural differences into one big salad bowl. Hence the state's nickname or reference.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major, if you find the right professors, they are truly passionate about their specialization. Although many professors tend to be easy on their students, there still is quite a bit of quality information to learned. It all boils down to the students aptness and willingness to learn.

    Dorm Life

Seriously, my first year was my best year. The dorms formed a sort of community within itself. Although I didn't spend the majority of my time with my dorm peers, there was a sense of family familiarity between all of us, and they are friendships that will last forever.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria meal plans are mandatory if you are to dorm. If you aren't in a dorm, I honestly wouldn't advise buying a meal plan. besides, the cafeteria is somewhat out of the way of the main campus.

    What to do for fun

Anything you can think of outdoors, it is available. Transportation is easier with a vehicle, but the public transportation is exceptional. My first year I made good use to it.

    Bang for the buck

This is quite obvious. I mean, it is Hawaii. But, as stated earlier, it's high in costs too.

    Greek Life

This is poorest school of choice if you are looking for Greek life. No joke.

    Campus Safety

the good: the campus is located really close to most major things in town, waikiki, ward, ala moana, and downtown. the bus system is efficient at getting you where you need to go.
the bad: the phrase it's uh has come to be an running joke to explain any bad things, including not very well maintained buildings, quality of education, and lack of common sense on more than one occasion.

    Tips for prospective students

the more credits you have coming in (such as from aps or transfer credits) the faster you get to register.
always carry a small umbrella in your bag in case of rain.
check out cultural events, like the greek, korean, or okinawan festivals.
as tempting as it is, don't skip class to go to the beach.

    Academic Rigor

i think the classwork really depends on your major, sciences are a lot harder than humanities, as shown by my engineer and bio friends spending large chunks of their evenings just doing homework or studying for tests. but on average, expect to devote at least 2 hours for every credit you have (so if it's a 3 credit class, you will probably need to invest at least 6 hours or more in studying and homework).
international business, international relations, and the marine sciences are what they are known for.
i'm not really sure if the classes are academically difficult so much as they are time consuming.

    Dorm Life

dorms are of average quality. there's enough space if you make efficient use of it. and all of the dorms are within 15 min walking distance from campus.
if you have the money, i'd say definitely go to frear hall. it costs about $6,000 for just the room, but given that you have a lot of space, ac, wi-fi, and your own bathroom (in other words, you don't have to share it with a whole floor, just your roommates), i'd say that that's money well spent.
i also realized that there's a lot of stuff going on around campus after-hours so it's actually a good investment to dorm if you plan on being heavily involved on campus.

    Food and Dining

food is not the best quality nor is it very cheap, but there's a lot of relatively cheap places to eat nearby that give you a lot of food for what you pay.
there's definitely a variety of foods available and the student union (campus center) dining hall rotates their menu every few months.
somehow gateway dining hall was highlighted as a cheap eats place on the news once. didn't really understand it, but i guess a $10 buffet is actually cheap eats.

    What to do for fun

there are weekly events at campus center, ranging from movie nights to concerts.
toma karaoke is an all-asian music karaoke place. they charge by the hour, so it's more cost-efficient to go in a large group.
there's always waikiki and the beach (north shore is better but farther away)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

check out the japanese garden. it's really pretty and calming.

Great for these types of students

asian and pacific studies, including: language, literature, linguistics, and culture
    international business
    tourism and hospitality services
    marine biology

    Clubs and Activities

there's a huge variety of clubs. usually they will be promoting during the first 2 weeks of each semester. and if you don't see what you like, you can always make your own club. speaking from experience, if you have at least 6 friends who share the same interest as you, and you can find an adviser, you can make your own club.

    Campus Safety

campus security usually patrols most well-walked areas of campus. but i'm still wary of going out by myself. since there are crimes that occur on campus, please be aware of your surroundings and, at night, go in groups of people instead of just by yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

if you love the outdoors, meeting new people from all over the world, and if you can appreciate the experience more than the reputation, then uh manoa can be a wonderful experience. as with most colleges, you just need to get out there and try to soak in all that you can. i believe in keeping a positive attitude if you want to have a positive experience. oh, and if you are coming from the mainland i recommend trying some local grindz!

    Academic Rigor

i am a theater major, and i know that our department is unique in that one is required to be well-rounded in all aspects of the theater. they ask that you take a design course, directing, acting, dance, voice, history, children's theater, asian theater, etc. it's really opened my eyes, and that's what i am here for: learning, enlightenment, etc. i am being challenged in different types of ways, so i cannot say that it is easy to get a's in my classes and use that as a basis for the academic rigor.

    Dorm Life

unfortunately i am not living in the dormitories on-campus, but from what i have gathered from a few of my friends who do, i am fortunate to be living with my mother just down the road-especially since i only pay $200 per month for rent! i am one lucky lady. i have visited a couple of times and from what i have observed, i believe if you have roomies who you vibe well with, the dorms can be a great place! keep in mind that staying involved in school activities might also be a contributing factor to making the most of your experience there!

It's a beautiful campus placed right in the green Manoa valley. It's not really a place of learning, unless you count learning how to party and learning how to skip school. The University is super relaxed, which can be awesome, but it also makes for an extremely unorganized and failing school.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure it's where you really want to live (especially if you're from the mainland), I'd suggest visiting campus. If you're not going to study marine biology or some form of science, this school isn't too great at much else. It's a fun place to live, but just try to keep your head above the meth heads and alcoholics that seem to rule this island.

    Academic Rigor

This school will not encourage you to think or try hard at all. A minimal effort will let you pass with flying colors.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are old and nasty, but they are fun! There is always something going on and they are a great place to meet people. Some are kind of sketchy, but so is everything at night.

    Food and Dining

It's okay. Super processed, nothing really to fresh except maybe the salads sometimes from local farms. It's owned by sodexo meaning it's as good as what prisoners eat :)

    What to do for fun

    Bang for the buck

    Greek Life

Most classrooms are in need of renovations. As with most US schools, even though us poor students are the ones paying tuition, we don't get much say in what that tuition goes toward; the school is building this huge recreation center in the middle of campus that none of the students I know care about, we would much rather pay less for school. If you've already been in Hawaii for a while you may get antsy and all of the sudden feel the need to leave, but transferring, especially, now is extremely difficult to do; it's very competitive and you will end up spending more time and money than you probably bargained for.

    Tips for prospective students

As with most schools, it's especially important here to register for classes as early as possible. Many students get stuck here for another semester or two simply because they couldn't get that one class needed for graduation. Surf and skate as often as possible, and Chinatown is the place to go out.

    Academic Rigor

UH Manoa is not a very challenging school.

    Dorm Life

    Am learning a lot

I found my professors to be generally enthusiastic and engaging, and even first year classes are not that large by state university standards. Had great experience with taking a foreign language for the first time ever. Also a outstanding class in Intro Oceanography with great field trips to beautiful an fun beaches and bays nearby. Classes in intro level of Microeconomics and Geography were generally quite good.

    Am enjoying being here

How can anyone not enjoy being in Hawai'i!!! Why did I wait so long to get here? Why would I ever leave?! I feel accepted and I'm having fun in a great setting. I do some serious studying, but I also have time to get to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and to enjoy learning about a unique culture. I have great floor-mates at my dorm from throughout Hawaii and the world. This place really rocks! I hear some negativity from others occasionally about the classes, but it is what you make of it, and if you arrive with a good attitude and an open mind to learning about a new culture and new people, Hawaii, Honolulu metro area, and UH Manoa are great!

    Bang for the buck

As out of state tuitions at the flagship campus of a state university go, Hawai'i is reasonable. You can cut costs by living and eating in the dorms. Dorms are being renovated, making them acceptable. Also can cut costs by staying through Holidays in Hawaii, where dorms stay open for no extra cost, except for feeding yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

Be patient with the administrative processes. Very slow and bureaucratic, but eventually they get there. People are nice and friendly, and filled with what they call the Aloha Spirit. We should all learn that from them back on the mainland, and this is something I want to carry with me past my time at UH.

Great for these types of students

People of multi-cultural origin, or those who are tolerant and accepting of cultural differences in others. Good earth, sea, and space sciences departments. Strong Asia pacific course work. Strong in Asia Pacific Languages. Strong business school with orientation toward doing business in Asia and the Pacific. Strong in travel and tourism. Strong law school - good rate of passing the bar exam. Good medicial school, especially for tropical medicine and family medicine. Strong School of Architecture.

    Academic Rigor

The classes that are here can be very challenging depending on your major and the classes that you are taking. There are some very easy classes that can fill your general ed. requirements and the teachers are very diverse in their teaches. Some are very good and entertaining while some can lull you to sleep and not be very good at teaching their knowledge to you.

    Am enjoying being here

There is a great diversity of ethnicity's and people from all around the country here so of course you get all these different personalities that you will/will not like. It's really easy to make friends here since like half the students are not from here and therefore are all in the same boat of wanting to meet new people. Also there are a million places you can go and explore around the island where there is beautiful scenery and make all your friends' back home jealous.

    Bang for the buck

For me, it was actually cheaper to come here than a lot of schools in California and I would have been paying in-state tuition. But I have noticed people (even students here) rate your education here a little lower than other places. From my knowledge its true to a certain extent. This school is very top heavy in that it has a couple of programs that are rated very highly and then the rest are very sub-par.

    Tips for prospective students

If you like to have fun there is always something happening here but as a word of caution the parties are very different here. The parties are not like all out dancing, drinking, being with a million people type. They are more like in the dorms and more laid back. There are clubs but it really isn't like the mainland. Also the things you can do off campus is really unlimited here, there is always something to do. But most importantly do your research on this school and every school you are interested in. if you don't have anything specific that you know you want to do, then see if this has a lot of options that you are interested in. This school has a lot of options, see if they are the options you like.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who are very laid back in nature and social. People who can make friends with everyone will have no problem fitting in here. Also the programs that are highly rated here and if you really care that your diploma means something and can't say its not the best is the biology, zoology, marine biology, business, and...a couple of others that you have to research. Also if you like the outdoors this place has unlimited options where you can visit all over the island. Most of us use the bus since we pay 20 dollars to use it for free anyways to get around the island.

    Am learning a lot

I've never learned so much in my life! I'm a political science major and we learn about so many different issues happening in the world and our own country and what we can do as young adults to try and solve the problems. If you like to help people, UH is the great school for you to attend. Professor are always supportive in projects that you want to start and they always reply back to your emails. If you don't understand assignments they will always take the time to meet with you and have a one-on-one session to talk about things. It's great!

    Am enjoying being here

I love being on campus! There is a lot of things to do! Even if I am a political science major you can join many clubs on campus just to see what it feels like to learn different things. If there's a problem you can talk to the student government who will help to solve the issue making campus life more awesome.

    Bang for the buck

As an in state student it is very cheap for me to attend. But it is also cheap for out of state students compared to other schools such as those in California. The financial aid office is very great at making sure they give you enough money to pay for school. They are very reasonable and will take into consideration circumstances in financial aid.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply to UH! It's a great school for anything! It's a very diverse campus and the Hawaiian culture is great! Not only is campus life great but we have a lot of other things you can enjoy such as going to the beach, great eating places, and many opportunities to work.

Great for these types of students

Marine science is a really big thing at UH but we have many different options. I think we have more foreign language options than any other college! It's just awesome! Come to UH Manoa!

    Will learn a lot

This college has a lot of programs that I am interested in. The day that I found out about the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I couldn't stop the research! I requested more information immediately!

    Will enjoy being here

Hawaii has been a place that I've wanted to live for the longest time! A chance to attend college there makes it even better. I'd love the chance to attend.

    Bang for the buck

It's expensive for me, only because I'm coming from out-of-state. For in-state students, the price would be that of a normal college.

Great for these types of students

Students who are interesting in Asian language or studies, this college would definitely be worth your time in researching.
