    Am learning a lot

At the University of Maryland, you learn so much more than just facts and truths from textbooks and lectures. While the classes are extremely informational, and the professors and T.A.s are all very knowledgeable on their subjects, the real learning goes on outside of the classroom. Their are countless non-credit lectures, shows to attend, research teams to be a part of, professors to work with one-on-one, and relationships to be made which will help you mature into a worldly human being. I have grown up so much in the one year I have attended this school, and the lessons I have learned (in and out of the classroom) will stick with me for life.

    Am enjoying being here

I personally did not know where I wanted to attend college until I started visiting schools my senior year. I decided to visit the University of Maryland College Park Campus on a whim since I had heard they were a public ivy, and had very selective academic programs. The second I stepped onto campus, I knew it would be my home for the next four years, and I couldn't have found a better fit. In the first year alone I became a part of a championship winning intramural team, found some of the best friends anyone could ever ask for, joined about 10 student groups, a club sport, attended all of the soccer, basketball, and football home games, and can honestly say I had the best year of my life. At the University of Maryland, even when you're not doing anything-you are with people, and you are doing something-It's an amazing experience.

    Bang for the buck

I'm an out of state student, so I pay a higher tuition than most of the population of the school (Maryland students) but it is worth every penny. There is a joke on campus that one out of state student per year pays for the flowers that make up the big M at the entrance of campus-but as a student you are paying for so much more. You find a new home, and a new family, and a new sense of self, and the knowledge you gain is worth every cent.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you are thorough with your resumes when you are applying, and when you finally get on campus make sure you investigate all of the different student groups so that you can find your own niche here at the University! Oh and don't be afraid of the random roommate selection, or not making friends because the place is so huge--that's the great part about it! There are so many different types of people at the University you really will find a new family, and it's amazing!

Great for these types of students

Outgoing, fun-loving students who enjoy being challenged in a classroom setting, as well as motivated from all sides of the spectrum. It's also great for kids who have a wide variety of interests, like myself, since there are clubs ranging from sports, to singing, to game playing, to community service, to broadcasting and so much more! It is so easy to be involved! It's also impossible not to catch Terrapinitis, so if you've got great school spirit and loyalty, this is the place for you. We LOVE our Terps!!

    Am learning a lot

I recently completed my first year at Maryland this past Spring and after looking back on my learning experiences at the university, I can definitely say that I have learned and will continue to learn a lot while attending this school. Not only will one who attends this school learn a lot throughout academics, but they will also learn a lot about themselves. As an incoming freshmen I was excited, scared, and nervous. There was the stress of making new friends, getting good grades, and making the most of the college experience. Maryland is a big school with many people looking to make friends. When you meet new people (and trust me, you will) you will learn about others as well as yourself as you continue to grow throughout college. College is much different than high school and at Maryland you will find the classes to be challenging but with the resources and availability of tutors, teaching assistant, as well as professors, you can get as much help as you need to assure yourself that you understand the material that is taught. As far as making the most of the college experience goes, college is the best opportunity to try new things and Maryland has endless opportunities for students including clubs, sporting events, intramural sports, etc.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love attending the University of Maryland. The large campus gives students an opportunity to meet new people everyday. Whether it is on a walk to class, participating in a club sport, or just walking down to the student lounge in the residence halls, you are bound to meet someone new everyday. The students at Maryland are very friendly and just as eager to meet new people as you are, so don't be afraid to introduce yourself and get to know others.

    Bang for the buck

At Maryland you will be challenged academically and socially. The knowledge spread throughout the resources including professors, teaching assistants, libraries, and other students at the University of Maryland is enough to assure yourself that you are getting the most for your money. In addition, as a young adult, you will be put in situations where you have to make decisions for yourself as well as represent who you are as a person. The University of Maryland is a place where students are pushed to do their best in their studies as well as strengthen their social skills so that its students can become succesful adults.

    Tips for prospective students

Throughout your college search make sure to visit all schools. The University is a great school with a LARGE campus so make sure that you walk around and see if you could get used to walking 10 minutes (or longer) to class. You may also want to check out a sporting event. Most students attend the football and basketball games and going to either one of these games will let you know what it feels like to be a Terp (for a few hours anyway) :-).

Great for these types of students

The University of Maryland is a great school for students who are willing to be challenged and enjoy being around others.

    Am learning a lot

At the University of Maryland – College Park, you will receive a first class education. At the university you have renowned professors, who put tremendous effort into teaching their students. For a large university, you feel like you are learning in a smaller institution. As a freshman, all my classes were taught by professors. My professors were always available for me to ask questions and discuss the information that I had learned in class. My TA’s were also great in helping me understand the course material and reinforce the lessons I had learned. I had a whole new perspective of my major and what my career choices were. There are also many different learning facilities that can help assist students in their classes. There is the Writing Center where students can have graduate students read over their essay and edit it for them. There are also various math tutoring halls where students can go and study for tests and enhance their math skills. Maryland also has a CORE curriculum so that students can take different classes outside of their major and get a well-rounded education. Maryland is definitely the school for students who are serious about getting a worthwhile education.

    Am enjoying being here

I love Maryland! I truly believe that it is a fantastic school. The fact that Maryland is such a big school might turn off some people. But I believe since Maryland is a bigger school it has more opportunities for people to just be themselves and find their own niche. For example, if you are a sports fanatic there are over 37 sports to watch and even participate in, in intramurals. There are also two dining halls on the north and south side of campus, which are styled as food courts with great varieties of food. We even have a vegetarian station called “Sprouts”. We have restaurants and campus shop where all you need is your id card to pay. There hundreds of different clubs to join and be a part of ranging from community service clubs to fan clubs. If you are someone who is very social there are many different sororities and fraternities to join ranging from Christian to multicultural. There is something for everyone at Maryland. Maryland’s campus is also gorgeous it has large grass fields and tall trees to sit and read under. There is also always something going on at Maryland whether it’s a party at Stamp Student Union or a football or basketball game where you can find everyone on campus cheering on the Terps. I have never seen more school spirit on a college campus in my life. You will definitely never be bored here. On top of that everything is wireless so you can access the internet at anytime, anywhere. If you don’t have a computer no problem there are 24 hour WAM computer labs all over campus. Last but not least, if you feel that you need to stay in shape you can go to not just one but two gyms. At Maryland, I have made life-long friends just by being involved. I always meet someone new every day. I feel that I’ve found my home away from home.

    Bang for the buck

As an out of state student, my tuition is a little bit more expensive than an in-state student, but it’s an education well spent. There are tons of scholarships to apply for to help finance your education at Maryland; many great scholarships are listed right here on this site. On top of that Maryland offers a substantial amount of financial aid to need-based applicants. And if that still isn’t enough you can also take out a payment plan with Financial called the Terp Payment Plan in which you can make low monthly payments to the university. Maryland’s a great school so don’t let the price intimidate you there are many different options for financing you education here.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a High School Senior looking for a great school Maryland is a great school to apply to. You can stay overnight to get a good feel for the campus. And if you are already interested in applying make sure that you are very thorough with you application. Make sure that you have your resume and recommendation letters ready so that you can complete the application in a timely process. Also keep on top of your deadlines and maybe send in your application a couple weeks before the deadline so you will get your decision sooner. If you are an incoming Terp, take full advantage of what the university has to offer. The university has many options for students to get well acquainted with their new home. There is the Edge Program where in-coming minority students can take a look at the campus and meet other in-coming students. There is also the Bridge Program where incoming students can take summer classes to get a feel of what taking classes in the fall will be like. Last but not least, make sure that you stay on top of your work and don’t get too sidetracked. Make a schedule and stick to it. Once you can learn to balance your work and play you will start getting the A’s.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for all types of students. If you’re an independent worker you can find large spaces to study and not be bothered in the library. If you’re someone who likes to work with other you can find a study room so that you can talk and discuss everything you want. There is so much that this university offers that anyone can find their niche. The great thing about Maryland is that you can be who you are and still be accepted. And it doesn’t matter what major you are because we have great professors in every major whether it’s Engineering or Government and Politics. Maryland is a great place for open-minded students looking for an education that can help prepare them for the real world.

    Am learning a lot

You will learn many things, in many ways no matter what type of person you are. This university excels especially in science and engineering, and being near Washington DC, large respected companies are very much present here in the form of internships and research opportunities. As with any university, there are easy classes and there are many hard classes, but if you take your work seriously, you will learn a lot about your own potential and gain an appreciation of the work you are doing. This university on an academic level competes with private Ivy League schools so you can be sure any employer in the future will respect where you have graduated from. Also, being in contact daily with people from all over the world, you will learn a lot about different cultures, lifestyles, and interests no matter where you go. Here you can learn just about anything you set your mind to through the hundreds of courses available or by simply joining clubs, activities and meeting people. This university boasts several, vast libraries with books on every topic imaginable, in many different languages. Not only will you gain knowledge beneficial to your career here, but you will gain a better understanding of yourself and the world around you if you are so inclined.

    Am enjoying being here

You will meet people from all over the world here from many different backgrounds so you are bound to meet some good friends. There are numerous activities and clubs to be involved in including sports, dance, gaming, and culture clubs to name a few. There are many very interesting people here, including students and professors, as well as activities to appeal to any niche. Campus events are frequent and diverse from the annual Maryland Day where virtually every club comes out to show what they have to offer to more personal events such as a quiet poetry reading or the breakdance battle in a secluded ballroom upstairs in the Stamp Student Union. With a campus of over 30,000 students, you can expect anything on this campus.

    Bang for the buck

First, the food for the most part is very expensive for what it is, and you will grow tired of it quickly. That aside, being at a school with the population of a large town, you will get excellent research opportunities and will work among some of the brightest minds from around the world. For many classes, your professors will be accomplished authors and researchers, but there are also informal study groups and discussions that supplement the lectures. However, also as a result of being a large school, receiving personal attention for your non-academic needs will have to make it through the bureaucracy of the school. The campus is large and many buildings have been renovated, but it is self contained. There is a 'main street' with an active nightlife, but the surrounding neighborhood is not so good, and crime and theft is unfortunately a problem in those areas. On a purely academic level however, this college is one of the top-ranked schools in America especially in science and engineering, so you will get that for the price of a public university.

    Tips for prospective students

One of the most important steps is to bring an open mind. You will be exposed to many different cultures and people here, but if you are willing to understand them, everything that this large university and its students/faculty have to offer will be much more clear, let alone more enjoyable. Also keep in mind that you are studying at one of the top universities in America and that you are competing with some very bright people. Do not take this as a bad thing, but see it as motivation to be better. At this university, it is simply a waste of time to slack off because you should take advantage of studying at a school that has so many resources and great minds. Also, be sure to keep up with deadlines because for the most part you will only get notices in the form of email notifications, and you do not want to deal with any more paper work and phone calls through the administration then you have to. Also, bring a bike. This campus is huge.

Great for these types of students

One of the great things about large universities is that anyone can feel at home here if they know where to look. No matter what you study or what you are interested in, there are probably dozens if not hundreds of others that are into it as much as you are. If you are quiet and mostly just into your studies, you will find more than enough resources in the campus libraries and through your professors. If you are socially activist or want to meet many people, as previously stated before, many clubs are available to satisfy all interests if you cannot find anyone similar in your dorm. If you are looking for a nice college town however, you may not find it here because there is really only one street off campus within walking distance with anything of interest to college students since most of the college is self-contained. Nevertheless, a trip to DC takes only a short trip by metro and so much is offered on campus anyway.

    In three sentences

The University is an extremely fun place to be at. Many people say the campus is extremely large, but it really isn't. After you learn the campus it'll seem small.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you do your research! When you visit a school and you don't like it very much, listen to your gut and don't apply. My roommate hated Maryland when she visited. She did not have a good semester and was very unhappy. She will not be returning because she transferred. Save yourself the trouble and make sure you like the school. Take high school seriously and start to clean up your bad habits. College is NO joke.

    Academic Rigor

Maryland is very tough academically. Most classes, depending on your major, are extremely tough. If you want a good GPA you definitely have to work for it. However, doing well is doable as long as you put in effort and work. Professors are very willing to help out students.

    Dorm Life

Personally, I hate my dorm. My hall is obnoxious and loud. All the girls go out every night and come back wasted. There have been many times in which I have not been able to sleep when I have an 8am or 10am exam the next day because the guys come to our hall and just talk and yell excessively loud. HOWEVER, my RA is TERRIBLE. She does not do her job. Im sure if she actually did her job, my dorm life experience would be better.

    Food and Dining

Food is great the first week, but after that, it gets old.The only station that changes everyday is the value meal station. However, even their food isn't that great sometimes. Our buffet dining hall, 251, is pretty good though.

    What to do for fun

My friends and I take the shuttle to the metro station. We then go down to Gallery Place in DC and go shopping. We also go to the movies. Im sure there are plenty of activities on campus, but personally I never hear about them. I guess you have to be involved in greek life or clubs. Big events are advertised around campus though.

    Campus Safety

Although there are high rates of crime around the area outside of campus, campus police are always around. I definitely feel safe. We have crime alert warnings that go out whenever something happens. However, if you have AT&T you most likely will not receive the text message. My roommate and I both have AT&T and never received the texts, only the emails. Her mother contacted Maryland and apparently they need some sort of contract with AT&T and they do not have it.

    Will learn a lot

My parents as well as a few family friends attended this college and have all told me that it's a fantastic choice. I think I want to major in engineering and UMD is a top-rated school for engineering.

    Will enjoy being here

The campus is beautiful, if a bit big. There's this one ice cream place on campus that makes ice cream from milk from some of the cows being raised on campus. It is AMAZING!!! The only problem is if you like Coke, you won't find it on campus. In fact, UMD boasts having one of the only three McDonalds in the world that sell Pepsi products.

    Bang for the buck

Being an in-state student, the cost of tuition is well within my budget for college.

    Am learning a lot

I am definitely learning a lot at the University of Maryland! There are 250+ majors; my major is Architecture (and I'm absolutely in love with it)! I just finished my first semester and I have to say is was an amazing experience. Academically, the school provided me with an array of opportunities: seven libraries that I could use any time I wanted and WiFi all throughout the campus. All of my professors were incredibly efficient at teaching; just being in the lecture-style atmosphere forced me to work harder. The work was definitely more challenging than high school, but with all of the tutoring opportunities availabe, it was pretty much imposible to fall behind.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely loved the overall social experience. UMCP is located right on a DC Metro line and transit is available throughout the campus itself. The exposure that all of the students have is absolutely incredible! My friends and I were out in DC at least every other weekend, wether it was for an assignment or just for fun.

    Bang for the buck

I am an in-state student, and even though I did not recieve any financial aid, I was given the opportunity to get a job. In fact, getting jobs on-campus is encouraged. I currently work in the UMCP Admissions Office nd couldn't be happier with the job. I get to speak with prospective students and their parents, and tell them all they need to know about my school. I can't say that I am rich from the job, but having a job allows me to help out with what little bills that I do have, as well as have so walk around money when I am out with my friends.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for prospective students would be to visit your school(s) as much as possible and make a name for yourself, especially if it is a bigger school. If you can't afford to visit the school, then make sure that you communicate with students from the school. Since I was accepted into the school of Architecture at the University of Maryland - College Park, I contacted the School as soon as I found out. After trading emails with a proffessor for about two weeks, I then decided to ask if I could speak with a student. That very same student wound up being my TA during my Architecture intro course.

Great for these types of students

UMCP, because it is a big school, would be better for students who enjoy being involved in something. From what I have seen, not being involved in some part of the school -- a club, SGA, etc. -- can cause some students to feel overwhelmed with the large environment. But, as a freshamn in college, I have some advice for any and every incoming college student: you are taking a step into adulthood, and making decisions and exposing yourself to situations/people that sometimes take you out of your comfort zone (as long as they are safe) are what help you to mature and grow into a well-rounded adult.

So far, the quality of education here is what one would expect from a higher education institution. The classes are challenging, but not overwhelming. In some cases, you can potentially learn straight from the textbook and attend lectures for reinforcement. Register for subjects you love, and you'll leave loving them more!

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful and enormous, a great learning environment for nature lovers. Bicycling and walking are your means of transportation. Be aware that there are also a lot of hills.
The faculty and students are mostly kind and eager to assist. Lectures tend to be large, though, so it is sometimes difficult to stand out and get to know your professors. Tip: Sit front and center.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is fairly great (a few thousand per semester). If you are employed or have assets, this should not be such a great problem. The education quality does balance out the tuition a bit, but other fees and mandatory aspects are questionable.

    Tips for prospective students

Wear comfortable walking shoes and dedicate an hour or two of the first week to wander around. Orient yourself to buildings that would be significant to you so that you can navigate through the campus. Also, get to know your advisers; they will be your sources for academic information.

Great for these types of students

Those who are very interested in the programs offered at the university and intend to pursue those fields as careers.

I've finished my first year here and I definitely enjoyed most of my classes. The professors are really there for you if you just walk into their office when you need them. There's a lot of information you have to take in so you really have to study it. For my first year, however, I wasn't too stressed out because the professors understand that we're all taking 15+ credits. I actually feel like I retain more information because of all the studying that happens.

    Am enjoying being here

I live in a dorm so I definitely get immersed in the community. Being right there to Route 1 makes for plenty of variety when you want to eat out or go out. There are even buses that take you to the metro so you have easy access to Washington DC. The people there are nice and if you're going to dorm, definitely become friends with the people on your floor!

    Bang for the buck

Since I live in-state, my tuition plus room and board is pretty reasonable. For the location, the professors, the experience, and the possibilities, I do think it's worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely think about dorming, even if it's only for the first year. You'll have a blast and you'll make best friends with the people around you. You need to make sure you can balance schoolwork and having fun. Making a schedule will definitely benefit you.

There are so many organizations from Greek life to just chess clubs to join. You are bound to find a group that you are interested in that has people who are similar to you.

    Greek Life

HUGE! We have a fraternity and sorority row. We also have NPHC Greeks on campus for the African American community. Also, we have Hispanic Greek organizations and Asian organizations. There may be more but I am not aware.

    Campus Safety

Tons of blue lights (emergency phones) located all around campus. Also, we have a shuttle system that runs almost all day so you don't have to walk at night. You can call for a campus police escort. We have campus police, state troopers, and county police all within a 4mile radius of the school.

    Am learning a lot

The required core classes at the University of Maryland make every student well-rounded in their academics. The classes that I was originally just taking to get core credits, such as astronomy and art, turned out to be some of my favorite classes. When completing classes for your major, you get more in depth and concentrated. The information I am learning at this school is more than I had expected from any college.

    Am enjoying being here

I honestly love the University of Maryland. The campus is beautiful and the town of College Park has many options. I was in one of the living-learning programs, which gave me unique opportunities and close friends. The countless student organizations help everyone find their place. Maryland's athletic programs are a big part of the school, and I personally have so much fun going to the soccer, football, and basketball games. There is always something to do and something new to experience.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Maryland is an excellent investment. Especially if you are an in-state student, you get an incredible education and experience for a great value. The campus itself always looks beautiful, the professors are some of the best in their fields, and the on-campus housing options are very convenient. Many of the programs, including but not limited to the business and engineering schools, are ranked as some of the top in the nation. There are some flaws, such as the freshmen dining plans that often go to waste because students do not eat as much as they pay for. But overall, I am glad I am making the investment to attend this school.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Maryland respects diversity, both in family background and personal experiences, so try to highlight that in your application. Show that you are a well-rounded, passionate, and hard working student. Visit the campus and its website so that you are somewhat familiar with it when you move in. Be open to all the opportunities that you will encounter!

Great for these types of students

Maryland students have outstanding school spirit and they love being at the school. That said, there is a place for almost everyone. Because it is such a large school, there are organizations to satisfy every personality and interest. The academics are challenging, so you have to be motivated, but Maryland students also know how to have fun!

The classes at the University of Maryland (UMD) are very rigorous and challenging. That isn't meant to scare any prospective student, but when I started college, I was worried about the work load and how hard the classes would be compared to high school, but everything is completely manageable. Although it may be hard to stay on top of things, especially if you're involved with any sports or student groups, you spend less time in class, and more time studying on your own, depending on the number of credits you take. There are also so many things to be involved in out of class, like people coming to UMD and giving lectures, or being a part of a research team, or creating a study. UMD is a great school to earn either your undergraduate degree or your graduate.

    Am enjoying being here

When I was applying to schools, I didn't want to apply to UMD, because it's literally 15 minutes from where my family lives, and I just wanted to get away. But my mom made me just apply, telling me I didn't have to go, but I should apply since it's in-state. After applying and getting accepted, I visited my top 3 schools, which included UMD. I visited UMD last, and once I was walking around the campus, I knew this is where I wanted to spend the next four years. Living on campus is so much fun, you're close to the sporting events, and it takes only 15-20 minutes to walk anywhere on campus. The campus may seem huge at first, and my first year I thought the same thing. But now that I know where almost everything is, it seems a lot smaller. And there are so many people here, so I'm always meeting new people and making new friends. This school is also extremely diverse, so meeting new people with different backgrounds can be very interesting and rewarding. This school has definitely opened my eyes to new possibilities and made me think about the world and the people in it. I'm starting my sophomore year, so once this year's over, I will be halfway done and have to start thinking about the real world! It's scary, but it's also so exciting.

    Bang for the buck

Being in-state, I still feel like I pay so much money for school. But UMD is worth every penny. And keep in mind, my parents aren't paying for it, with the exception of my college savings they started, but it doesn't have enough for all four years. So I have had to take out loans, and will be paying them back soon enough, so I don't take for granted my education and experiences here.

    Tips for prospective students

You should definitely visit the school at some point. Even if you've been here before and seen it. Take a tour, and learn more about the school. I visited after I was accepted, so the entire time I walked around the campus, I thought to myself, This could be my school, I could be walking here every day. Also, make sure to check out the student groups and start thinking if you'd like to be involved in any of them. You could even check out a sporting event, like a soccer, football, or basketball game. These three are the most popular, and going to one now might give you a feel for what it's like to be a Terp. Definitely don't stress the random roommate selection, and if you really end up not liking your roommate, you can move to another room after a few weeks.

Great for these types of students

Outgoing, self-motivated, hard-working. As well as spirited, and people with a variety of interests, because there are just so many things to be involved with!

    Bang for the buck

Although I am an out of state resident, the caliber of the education I am receiving is well worth the money. The campus is huge and it offers a wide variety of interests. It may be a bit overwhelming in the beginning but you soon realize that everyone is in the same boat and the support is priceless. My markets and society curriculum is broken down into a smaller cluster of students which gives you a smaller college learning style. At the same time, the sporting events are awesome with the large university spirit. It is also close to Washington D.C. and Baltimore for occasional weekend excursions. Also, Maryland is generous with their grants and scholarships. In less than 1 month, I am completely comfortable in my surroundings, made some very good friends, joined 2 clubs, and am learning so much! If you decide on the University of Maryland, I guarantee you will not regret your decision. Fear the Turtle! Go Terps!

    Academic Rigor

You learn so much at UMDCP! Even from faculty that aren't Profs. The advisors help you so much, and they have top-notch resources and facilities! Keep in mind though, not all Profs. are created equally, so of course there are some that people try to avoid, as there is at any college. But from what I've found thus far, the majority of the Profs. are great! And many of them are world-renowned for their contributions to their fields!

    Am enjoying being here

Keep in mind it is college...there is going to be a lot of work and studying to do. But UMD wants to make sure your time there is enjoyable and always has something going on, whether it be a show or a BBQ or a social, you can always find something! And, with hundreds of clubs and student organizations, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved, have fun, and boost your resume!

    Bang for the buck

This school is considered one of the few Public Ivy Leagues school, meaning, for a fraction of the price of Harvard or Princeton, or any of those other Ivy Leagues, you can get just as amazing as education! The faculty consists of many award winning members and even a handful of Nobel Peace Prize winners! The $8000 in state and $11000 out of state tuition is definitely makes it that much better! Ivy League education for the price of a state college!

    Tips for prospective students

Do your best! As long as you work hard, focus, but allow yourself some time to relax as well, you'll be absolutely fine! College is so much better than I imagined!

Great for these types of students

Anyone and everyone! Literally! There are students straight out of high school, students who already have kids and careers, students who just decided to take a bit of time off from school, and every type of person you could ever imagine! It's so incredibly diverse, and use Terps pride ourselves on that!

The professors here are great--really. They are as qualified as they can be. However, I did not award it five stars because of the amount of people in each class -- for example, my math class had about 350 students in it during each lecture. It's kind of hard to ask questions with that many people in class, so learning has to come from inner-motivation as opposed to the teacher following your every move.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love it. There are no shortage of activities whatsoever, from Basketball games to Football games to a Recreational Center on Campus to a Video Game Zone in the student union. Everything in this school is accessible, and everything is catered to the student.

    Bang for the buck

As an out-of-state student, it's pretty damn expensive. We get a lot for our money for sure, but I feel like the money we pay can be more efficiently spent on different kinds of programs. For example, there is a large garden in front of the school that bares a giant M made of flowers, and the color of the arrangement changes a few times per month (rumor has it, it costs about 30 grand each time it changes). I feel like this is only one example where the University uses money in a poor way.

    Tips for prospective students

Study, study, study. Get your butt in shape by doing tons of extra curriculars as well, and get involved with sports, too. A GPA isn't everything, but it's a lot of it, so don't slack at all.

Great for these types of students

Extra-curricular oriented students. I say this because I was one, and it seems to me that every other student at UMD was once a Class President or a Varsity Captain.

    Am learning a lot

My classes are making me think outside of what I did before I got here. I'm in a few general classes for what is known as CORE here which are classes that every student is required to take regardless of your major. These classes have helped me transition into college as this is my first semester of my freshman year. These classes make me look at the world in a different view and really open my mind up to what I might be interested in.

    Am enjoying being here

There's a lot of stuff to do but you will never have time to do it all. The key is to do your work and then see what you still have time for afterwards. I was lucky because I knew that there was a group that I was going to be in when I first got here because my older siblings are currently attending this school as well. If you're into the crazy parties there are those but if you're more like me and aren't up for going nuts then there are plenty of opportunities to have good clean fun with lots of new friends.

    Bang for the buck

I got a lot of scholarships and financial aid this year so it doesn't feel too bad cost wise but things here can be expensive. You learn quickly that the diner prices are ridiculous but you're forced to have a meal plan so the prices don't seem that bad once you get used to it. Just don't spend them all right away. The classes are highly educational and there are a lot of resources available. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and things such as sports games are free with your tuition so it's definitely worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved early and find things you like. You don't need to know what you want to do when you get here, I still don't know. Find a good group where you can make some friends and things won't be so boring. Keep on top of your classes and don't put things off because this will give you the time to do the stuff you really want to do later on.

Great for these types of students

Business, engineering, journalism, communication. It has a lot to offer for everyone really. It's great for those who feel like opening up to all possibilities. It can be quite stressful during your first semester when you're trying to transition but don't feel bad because everyone else is doing the exact same thing. Great for those who want to explore.

    Did learn a lot

The classes were crowed and the teachers did not care to know your name. If you had questions in class, most often you would have to ask the teacher's aid for assistance.

    Did enjoy being here

I did not enjoy my stay here at all. For a highly- regarded puclic school, the campus was too open, too many distractions, and too much drama. The vibe here is not serious and can alter your perception of college into one of careless attitude and rebelliousness. In one case, I reported a harassment complaint against a sorority but the school did nothing and did not provide me any help. I dropped out as a result of the harassment and I have the feeling that the school itself does not care to know my story.

    Bang for the buck

The classes are too big, the lectures too general, the assignments too specific, and the atmosphere to wild. I would not recommend this school to anyone who has a goal-oriented mind and ambitious nature for a successful future.

    Tips for prospective students

Take note that this is a public school at the most extreme. If ever hope to achieve the unthinkable then this school is not for you. I was extremely disappointed.

Maryland is a large public research university located in an urban setting. It offers many different majors and academic programs to fit any students interests. College Park is a busy area and there is something for everyone at UMD.

    Tips for prospective students

It's important at Maryland to get as involved as possible. Join a Greek organization, play a club sport, get involved in intramurals, etc. It is a huge school and it's important to find your own niche within the community.

    Academic Rigor

Maryland is an academically challenging school, especially in the more prestigious schools/majors such as Journalism and Business. The students are highly motivated and the teachers are intelligent, helpful and motivating.

    Dorm Life

Freshman dorms leave a lot to be desired, as the rooms are cramped and the bathrooms are all hall-style. However, there are many nicer apartment/suite style living options on South Campus that are available after freshman year that many students take advantage of.

    Food and Dining

While North Campus Diner isn't exactly a gourmet restaurant, many students love South Campus Diner for it's array of options, including made-for-you wraps and sandwiches. The Student Union also offers many popular chain restaurants including Chick-fil-A, McDonalds, Panda Express and Sbarro.

    What to do for fun

There is something for everyone, from house parties to nights at the bar. D.C. and Baltimore are also a short trip away, and the metro is very accessible via a ShuttleUM bus. While Greek organizations do provide a significant portion of the night life, other students will still have no shortage of activities to take part in.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Students are often seen rubbing Testudo's (the school mascot who appears as a bronze figurine in many places on campus) nose for good luck before tests and exams. During exam time, the podium of his statue is covered in offerings such as candy and food in order to bring some luck.

The community is very tight-knit and involved in many things, from philanthropic ventures to intramural sports. Letters are seen everywhere on campus and members are very involved and visible.

    Campus Safety

The University of Maryland is a large school with difficult academics. Sometimes you might find yourself lost navigating through its many buildings, but you'll always find interesting new places to study or chill. Even if you get lost on campus, you won’t get lost in the crowd because the University of Maryland provides a place for anyone, with its variety of clubs and activities, degree programs, fraternities and sororities.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to be proactive in speaking to your academic advisors and teachers, and do not slack in your academics. Study with friends who study, not friends who talk. Even though it might be easy to get lost on campus, if you get involved with a club or on-campus activity, you won’t get lost in the crowd.

    Academic Rigor

Academically, The University of Maryland provides a challenge for those who want one. Some teachers may not be the most helpful, and some classes can be outright confusing, but there are many ways to find a good match for you. Since the University of Maryland is a well-known school, many ranking sites offer valuable information about teachers. The university of Maryland itself has detailed synopsizes of classes, as well as information on individual teachers.

Although the University of Maryland is building more dorms, so a larger amount of the student population can live on-campus, the university has had issues with space. Personally, I have been happy with my dorm. As a transfer student, I received a single in an honors dorm. Many dorms do not have air conditioning.

The University of Maryland has decent food and flexible dinning plans.

College Park is by far the best state school in Maryland. As a Government & Politics major, UMD gives me tons of opportunities - it's just a 20 minute metro ride from DC, and there are a multitude of trips into the city, as well as internship offerings through the school. Through the Honors Program, I've had great experiences in small seminar classes - a rare chance at most big state schools - and I can't imagine going anywhere!

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early! Don't wait for the regular admission deadline! (I think early apps are due in November). This will give you much better chances at being placed in the Honors or Scholars programs. On housing - if you have an engineering, science, or math major, aim for North Campus housing. If you have a humanities or behavioral science major, aim for South Campus.

    Academic Rigor

Coming in to College Park after completing the IB Program, I found some of my introductory classes to be quite simple. I used these classes to form a solid GPA before I take more challenging classes. Never having taken Calculus before, I took Calc I (MATH140) and found it challenging. If you have time, and haven't studied it before, I'd recommend taking a Pre-Calc course, or devoting a lot of study time to 140.

    Dorm Life

I lived in a 'living learning community' dorm my freshman year. Though the facilities were nothing special (about 3 stars worthy), the people I lived with were fantastic! Housing at UMD is a bit of a toss up your freshman year, but after that there is a room selection program which will give you a little more choice in where you live and who you live with.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls prepare average meals. Dining Points allow you to get food at both North and South Diners, and also Adele's, the restaurant in Stamp Student Union. Adele's has great food, and is a great way to spend your dining points if you have extra at the end of the semester!

Because it's so large, UMD has tons of activities and clubs to join. I joined the rowing team (having never rowed before) and I love it! There are sports clubs, student groups for every religion and ethnicity, and many academic clubs, like debate or political groups.
College Park is a large town of mostly students, and therefore offers a lot of opportunities to go out and party at night, as well. Lots of people are involved in greek life on campus.

    Bang for the buck

If you're paying in-state tuition, College Park is a great value! I have high school friends paying more for less prestigious private schools, and I think they're ridiculous! They could've gone to UMD, payed less, and learned more.

The University of Maryland is a great school for those looking to challenge themselves. Given the large graduation class sizes you have to fight to be noticed here, however finding your niche is easy given the range of opportunities here for you. No matter what you're looking for in a school academically, socially, etc., the University of Maryland has it here.

    Tips for prospective students

Really show the University what you have to offer. This school wants students who are going to fight for a spot, and more importantly, students who are going to keep fighting once they get here. If you choose to come to Maryland, be one of those fighters. Don't sit down and just get your education; earn it.

    Academic Rigor

No matter what your major is, you're going to get a great education here if you try. It's easy to float on by if that's really what you're looking for, but who wants to just get an education? If you want to do something with your degree, you have to push yourself, and this is definitely a school that will allow you to do that.

    Dorm Life

The sense of community on campus is incredible! Whether you live in the dorms, or the off-campus University apartments (Courtyards), you're part of a great community. There's always something to do, or an event to attend, or free food to be eaten!

    Food and Dining

The selection of food here is incredible! We have so many options in terms of actual locations and then once you choose a location, there are even more options to choose from there. I love the wraps and anything I eat in our 251 All-You-Can-Eat Buffet location on North Campus.

    What to do for fun

There is always something to do! There are so many clubs and organizations on campus for students to take part in so it's easy to find something you're interested in. Whether you like sports, or Greek Life, or community service, there are plenty of opportunities for you!

    Bang for the buck

As an out-of-state student, it's always difficult to see that number at the bottom of the bill, but in the end, I truly find it to be worth it. I've had so much fun here at school and I've learned so many things that will help me in my future that I feel that my college experience was worth it all.

The sense of community is strong and there is always something to do, from philanthropy events, to social events, to Homecoming and Greek Week!

    Academic Rigor

After two years as a life science major here, I can say that the science classes are really challenging! Most of the professors are good and will help you work towards the grades that you want, but there's no way of getting around the fact that most of the classes are filled with very eager pre-med students.

    Dorm Life

As a sophomore, some of the things I loved last year have gotten a little cheesy, but I'm still coming back for a third year. I had a great roommate freshman year through the campus random selection. The rooms are decent size, definitely not huge. They are starting to fit dorms with A/C, so its a bit of a toss up as a freshman if you'll have it or not. If you get into Honors or Scholars, take the program housing. You'll be with people who have similar study ideas to yourself and there will be a lot less partying.

    Food and Dining

Its hard for me. I have some dietary restrictions however. Overall, the food really isn't bad, and sometimes is downright good. There's always a salad bar, sandwiches, pizza, and a vegan station at one dining hall, in addition to the hot meal of the day. You will be able to eat, but you might find it getting repetitive after awhile. The only reason it gets two stars is because it gets repetitive and its harder for veggies/vegans.

The university is very versatile. There is the perfect balance between academics and social life here on campus. Definitely a place where everyone will fit in and feel comfortable.

    Tips for prospective students

This is the place to be. Make sure you are very well rounded, because one-dimensional students wouldn't utilize the universities versatility to its potential. Take advantage of this opportunity.

    Academic Rigor

The classes here are challenging, which helps us grow intellectually. Theres nothing that one cannot possibly handle here.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great, the best way to meet new people and make more friends.

    Food and Dining

Food is awesome! We have 2 traditional diners, an all you can eat buffet, and two restaurants on campus.

    What to do for fun

Plenty! The nations capital is only 10 miles away, so a nice bike ride or a trip on the metro will allow you to access all that DC has to offer.

Here at the University of Maryland, we follow the A. S. S. motto: Academics, Sports, and Stay up late partying. While we have a reputation of being a party school, our education is taken very seriously, as well.

    Tips for prospective students

With an enrollment of nearly 40,000 students, it can be easy to get lost in the crowd. However, there are hundreds of clubs, organizations, and activities readily available for you to partake in. Take advantage of all the university has to offer, while maintaining a strong GPA.

    Academic Rigor

A majority of the classes you will attend at the University of Maryland are going to require an extreme amount of studying. However, like most other schools, easy 'A' classes are available if you know which classes to take.

    Dorm Life

If you have a choice, make sure you dorm on campus! You'll make most of your friends through your dorm. Almost all students in these dorms leave their doors open if you ever want to stop by and say hello.
Unfortunately, housing isn't guaranteed for Juniors, Seniors, and Freshman Connection students. This will affect your social life because, although the off-campus apartments are right next to the university, the students in these off-campus apartments are not very social and you will feel isolated from the university. If you must live off campus, don't expect to make as many friends.

    Food and Dining

We only have two main dining halls, so if your dorm/apartment has a kitchen, make the most of it.

    What to do for fun

Our neighborhood isn't the best of neighborhoods, so most students either hang out on university grounds or party on frat row. Whether it's bowling, swimming, working out, or whatever you feel like doing, our campus has it all.

    Bang for the buck

Between the recent increase in tuition for those in-state, and the exorbitant out-of-state tuition, it's hard giving this more than 3 stars.

    Clubs and Activities

Hundreds of clubs and organizations to choose from, and if you find something of interest that the university doesn't offer, they make it very easy for you to initiate the organization.

This institution is a place for students who are hard working and want to obtain a degree that will allow them to excel later in life. UMD has a great learning environment, as well as an excellent social environment. The professors challenge their students, but just because they want them to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

I would tell prospective students that if they like large welcoming campuses that they would enjoy UMD. The classes are challenging, but they help develop you into the person you are going to be when you graduate. The most important tip would be to study your hardest when it comes to exams and you should be fine.

    Academic Rigor

The classes at University of Maryland are for the most part challenging. The professors make sure you are pushing yourself to your extremes. Although the classes are somewhat difficult, I feel that they are helping the students of UMD develop and increase their knowledge.

    Dorm Life

I never had the privilege to live on campus because I am a transfer student. It was a little more challenging for me to get on campus housing. I live in a great apartment that has a dorm room feel right off of campus. It is a great experience and all of the friends I've made who live on campus enjoy it as well.

    Food and Dining

There are a few different dining halls on campus and they offer a wide variety of fresh food. There is also a fast food court in our student union hall. UMD also has a variety of dining plans that can fit into anyones needs. If you attend this school you must try the buffalo chicken wrap at any of the diners, it is great.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities provided for students on campus. Their are multiple concerts and celebrity appearances held on campus each semester and students are offered discount ticket prices. The football, basketball, and lacrosse games are always fun to attend with your friends. Off campus there are multiple food shops, bars, theaters, and shopping areas.

Students who are interested in Greek life should attend UMD, because they sororities and fraternities are great. Anyone who is looking to further their education and have a great time while doing it should attend UMD

    Clubs and Activities

The campus overall is a pretty safe place. The campus police is always patrolling the campus and their office is located 1 minute off of campus. The campus is always lit and there are emergency telephones/lights always located within around 25 ft of each other incase of emergency. There are always a few thefts or problems each semester, but nothing too extreme.

the location of this school not only created a diverse atmosphere, but it has the best educational opportunities anyone could ask for. some professors are okay, but there will be a handful that just amaze you at how well they teach. also, this is a huge university, but after a month it feels really small so you start to feel apart of everything.

    Tips for prospective students

i strongly suggest students join a club or two and meet people. don't ever be afraid to join a club sport or another group of your interest. go to your community events. they're really not dumb like some people say, they're fun and you meet great people. go to games and experience the most passionate fans. be respectful in the dorm area, be quiet and be neat. most importantly, go to your professor's or teaching assistants office hours. they love to see students come in and trust me it might help your grade.

    Academic Rigor

the classes are hard. the first semester will be overwhelming but i strongly recommend that students set a bedtime. that way you know to get your work done before bed so your not up until six in the morning. also, there is so much reading. don't be a student that doesn't read and just depend on lectures, you will not do well. more importantly, don't over do it. don't schedule all hard classes in one semester and don't take 19 credits if you can barely do 15 credits.

    Dorm Life

if it is anything i learned in the dorm it is be respectful of the quiet hours and of the common living area. clean up after yourself. yes, there are maids but it is the students responsibility to clean up after themselves in the lounge and bathroom. another very important note is clean your hair out of the drain!

    Food and Dining

the food isn't great, but it's dorm food. it isn't the healthiest and it gets old very fast. another thing is it is super expensive. so portion your dining points wisely!

    What to do for fun

the university of maryland, college park is a large school, which can be daunting at times, but provides a lot of different opportunities. the amount of events, from sports games to entertainment is extraordinary, and there is a club for almost anything that can be thought of. the classes i am taking make me feel like i am getting the education i am paying for.

    Tips for prospective students

make sure you want a big school- there will be many times that not knowing everyone will be rewarding, but many times when it will be scary. the good thing about umd is that you can actually make it as big or as small as you like, depending on what programs you join. please come and see for yourself how beautiful the campus is. also, if school spirit and pride is what part of what you're looking for, there aren't many other places where it can be found at such a high level.

    Academic Rigor

it obviously depends on your schedule, major, or what college you're in, but classes can be tough. there are times when you will have nothing due for weeks, but also times when you will not have a break. the professors here are really good about not wanting to give you an overwhelming amount of work. they know how many other courses you have on your plate in addition to theirs.

    Dorm Life

some dorms are newer and nicer, while others are definitely smaller and could use some renovations. the good news is, they are working on putting a/c into the rest of the dorms that don't have it yet. the lack of a/c in the fall was not that bad, however. the freshman dorms have both boys and girls on the same floor, but they are split up by sides, which i think works out really well. my ra's have always been really helpful and easy to go to. it seems as though everyone becomes friends with people on their floor for the most part, because there's so many people in the dorm as a whole, but people definitely have friends on other floors as well.

    Food and Dining

both of the main dining halls, north campus diner and south campus diner, have a lot of options at all points during the day. if you get the same thing all of the time, it gets old, but there's always something else to try. also, there are always vegetarian and vegan options. 251 north, the new all-you-can-eat diner, is delicious, but it's only open on the weekdays for a short amount of time. there is late-night dining, which offers different things, and is great for study breaks, but they do not have it on friday and saturday night.

    What to do for fun

route one runs along the outside of campus and has tons of restaurants to go to and some places to shop. the campus has a free shuttle to the metro to go into dc, which is about 30 minute trip, so a spontaneous trip to a restaurant, museum, club, or to just walk around is always an option. there are off-campus apartments that are actually really close, and fraternity row is really close to campus, so there is usually a party to go to. the clubs and groups you join also give a lot of different events to go to. we have a movie theater, or there are always random events like laser tag, capture-the-flag, or even roller-blading in the student union.

    Bang for the buck

in-state tuition is very inexpensive, but for out-of-staters, like me, it can be hard. i like to think of it as i'm not only paying for my education (which feels like it's worth it on it's own) but i'm also paying for my college experience. the professors here are some of the top experts in their field. once you wrap your head around that, you realize why it's worth it. the most annoying part of financials is the meal plan, where if you don't use all of your points, you lose them when the semester ends.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

we have statues of testudo, the diamondback terrapin all around campus, and people rub his nose for good luck. around testing times, people leave him offerings like notes, gifts, and food to do well on their exams. there is a certain spot on campus that if you stand there and talk, it echoes back to you. also, there is a crack in the circle behind shoemaker building where rumor has it, if you step on it, you won't graduate in four years. for basketball games, we read and shake newspapers while the other team is being announced, and then go crazy when it's our turn. people line up for hours before basketball games, and the atmosphere in comcast center is insane and so much fun.

Great for these types of students

there isn't just one type of person who would fit in at maryland- i honestly think anybody could be happy here. the kind of person who would get the most out of it, however, is someone who wants to get involved, meet a lot of people, and isn't afraid to step out of their comfort zone a little.

only around 12% of people participate in social greek life, so it is not something that anybody feels forced into. however, they still have a big presence on campus, and are very active. frat row has 11 fraternities and 3 sororities, and the graham cracker, the neighborhood behind it, has a ton more main or satellite houses.

    Campus Safety

there are blue-lights always in sight, where you can run up to and call the police if you feel unsafe in any way, and they get there really fast. there are some crime alerts every couple of weeks, but nothing too serious. the area around campus isn't too safe, but to get onto campus at night you need a umd id or security takes all of your information. they have free shuttles all night long, or nite-ride, which will pick you up from anywhere on campus and drive you where you need to go.

the university of maryland is a diverse, exciting, and popular place to attend school. the sports provide many exciting venues to attend, and the academics are thoroughly challenging. the campus is a beautiful place to live, all year round.

    Tips for prospective students

as a prospective student, work hard if this is the school you really want to attend. it may be easy for you in high school, but college is a lot different. starting good study habits early, while it's easier in high school, will make the transition to college a lot smoother and easier.

    Academic Rigor

my major definitely is academically challenging. kinesiology is the study of active movement and the body, which requires many science courses and lab courses. although challenging, the classes are very interesting to get involved with!

    Dorm Life

eh, what to say about dorm life? everyone should go through it, because it's an experience. you share a small room, make great friends, and enjoy your time getting to know many different groups of people. sharing a bathroom with fifty other people is not ideal, but like i said, it's an experience.

    Food and Dining

the food is definitely an adjustment, but its available at almost all hours of the day and night. the greatest thing about the food on campus is the variety. you do not have to eat the same thing every single day which is nice, and if you get tired of diner food, the student union has great fast food places and a sit down restaurant to enjoy a nice night of food.

    What to do for fun

university of maryland has a lot of campus run clubs and activities to get you involved for fun and meeting new people. also, the campus strives itself on the sports teams, so there is always an event whether it's football, basketball, gymnastics, or field hockey, there is always something to do and watch.

this school has a lot of character with thousands of smart, talented, fun students. however, the campus and dorms are a little bit bland and the walks to class can be long. that being said, most students study hard (especially the honors college, which is almost a separate community entirely), but play hard too.

    Tips for prospective students

definitely consider this school if you're a good student but like to party it up. avoid it if you want a totally new environment and you're from maryland.

    Dorm Life

every dorm has a strong sense of community, everyone hangs out and plays or studies together.

    What to do for fun

go to parties, utilize the world-class eppley rec center (racquetball, basketball, swimming, weight room, running track, ping pong, etc.), go to sporting events

UMD, College Park is a school full of opportunities and great education. It has a campus feel, but is large enough to feel like it's own town and easy access to Washington, D.C. and other commercial areas, providing plenty of opportunities for entertainment and enrichment. Even though the campus is huge and there is an enormous amount of students, individual colleges and departments help break UMD down into smaller communities.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to get into some sort of program. The friends one makes in these programs become friends for life and help make adjusting to college life easier. For those living in Maryland, don't cross UMD off your potential colleges just because it's in-state. Being in-state is great in case you need to come home for emergencies (or just for fun) and is so much cheaper than attending private schools or public schools in other states. You won't even think about the fact that you're still in Maryland once you're at school.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are definitely jokes and just easy A's, but these fluff classes exist at pretty much every school. In my first semester I have learned a great deal about the subject matters I studied and about being a better college student. Your academics can be as rigorous as you want them to be.

    Dorm Life

I live in one of the smaller honors dorms and it's fantastic! The community is great and I met all of my best friends there. UMD, College Park does have huge high riser dorms, but most RA's do a great job of building communities on individual floors. There are, of course, dorms notorious for partying, but it's easy to avoid them or become involved if you want. The Language House and Writers' House are fantastic opportunities to become involved in tight-knit communities and build on your skills. Most dorms have been/are being updated and are quite nice. There is also apartment and suite-style living available.

    Food and Dining

The point system used for student dining is a great way for students to learn how to manage available funds. That being said, the prices are ridiculous, and most students have at least $100 worth in points left at the end of the semester (these do not carry over into the next semester). The food itself is pretty decent; there are a lot of options and stations available for each meal. However, for someone who has certain food allergies, it can be more challenging. There are tons of cafes all over campus that serve Starbucks coffee and have snacks. The restaurant, Adele's, in the student union also accepts points during dinner hours, which can make for fun outings.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of options for fun things to do. Sports tickets are free for students, and so soccer, football, basketball, lacrosse games, etc. are fun and cheap to attend. The performing arts center also has free or extremely reduced tickets to shows and many of the performing arts groups, such as a cappella groups and bands have performances throughout the year. The fitness center offers free fitness classes and the student union has tons of classes, such as art and dance, that are very affordable. In addition, D.C. provides tons of free entertainment and individual clubs constantly have events.

    Bang for the buck

As an in-state student, I find the resources, opportunities, and programs included in my tuition to be a great value. The faculty are great for the most part and the research facilities are superb. Overall, I think the value of the school is great.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

During finals week, students leave offerings for our mascot, Testudo. During the week of a game against Duke or UNC, any student caught wearing any shade of blue is mercilessly accused of supporting our enemies.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for anyone looking for a great research institution, a large school, big sports teams to support, a huge number of opportunities for gaining experience in various fields, a large campus but the feel of a smaller school.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 160 clubs to join and tons of groups for students to become involved in. There is something for everyone, and in the off-chance a student doesn't find what he's looking for, he can create his own club. There are also many intramural and club sports teams students can join.

    Greek Life

There are a great variety of fraternities and sororities. UMD is not overwhelmingly Greek, for those looking to avoid it, but there are some great opportunities for those who do want to join. Frat Row is where all the parties happen, but it's off-campus, and so while everyone may hear about it, whether they participate is up to each individual person.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is generally good. There are a lot of off-campus incidents, and there have been a few on-campus incidents this past semester. However, UMD does have the blue light system, and escorts are available 24-7. I make sure I always walk with at least one other person when it gets dark and keep to more public areas. I also feel that the campus is not very well lit. However, very rarely do I feel unsafe.

At the University of Maryland you will be challenged in the classroom setting to learn a lot. Although books may total up to a lot most professors use these tools regularly so that your investment into these books is not a waste. You will also learn a lot from the student body because Maryland does an excellent job at diversifying the students body so you will be able to have friends from all cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying my experience at the University of Maryland because there are so many college activities that one can participate in free of charge. These free activities provide a medium for you to meet more people. There is also a great staff that helps when homework and class work when material gets a bit challenging.

    Bang for the buck

Although I am from New Jersey and I am paying out of state tuition the price of out of state tuition is worth it. I've met so many great people, the dorms are very clean compared to many schools, the bus service on campus runs regularly, the internet works without problems, and the food is great.

    Tips for prospective students

The skill of time management is vital for success at the University of Maryland College Park. Although there are so many activities and clubs to participate in, students can get caught up in social events which can hinder their academic success. Find a solid group of friends at school so that you do not feel alone at school, because it can be overwhelming due to the large student body population.

They throw you right into the action as an engineer with the hovercraft group task, and despite the difficulty and stress of it, you learn a lot about yourself and how you work in a group environment. You also learn how to improvise and be resourceful if need be(and the need is there!).

UMD has about 200 to 300 students in each lecture. Yet, the professors are always happy to help each students. Every professors have office hours and if you visit their office during it, you can ask professors the information that you didn't understand, and try to help you out if you are having problems in his/her class.
Since we have discussion classes for most of our science and math related courses, you can ask TA about homework, prepare for the test/quiz, and learn more stuff in general.

School work will be tiring and really tough but if you attend those kinds of clubs you will for sure enjoy being in college.

    Bang for the buck

Since we have great amount of students from China, Korea, India and so on, our school has a great connection for studying abroad. Many students receive scholarships for studying abroad and have more experience from there. There aren't scholarship programs for international students, but if you are a legal residents in US there are lots of scholarship you can apply.

    Tips for prospective students

SAT is important to get into this school.
Work hard at high school and also try studying for SAT so you can get around 1800 out of 2400 or higher.

Actually, to tell the truth... SAT isn't everything. In my case, I did not get high score for SAT but I had worked really hard in high school that I had higher than 4.0 GPA and I joined many different sports teams, clubs, speach teams. I also attended several youth programs in government and UN. I focused not only the school stuff but also volunteering works too. Every school year, I did at least an hour of volunteering per week and during summer break I spent about 60-100 hours for helping people. I believe, if you can't get good score on SAT, you should try what I have done to show UMD how passionate and smart person you are.

Great for these types of students

People who wants to make lots of friends but also want to focus on studying should come here. Although, the class sizes are humongous professors are always there trying to help students. You can also meet verity of students at UMD.

If you want to have a decent education, then feel free to go anywhere else, but if you want to have a great education than you need to come to the University of Maryland. The professors at Maryland are are probably some of the best teachers in the nation. They make it very easy for you to learn and understand college work that is meant to be tough. As well as the professors, there are also plenty of tutors and tutoring programs that Maryland offers, so even if you still do not understand what your professor is saying you can always get some extra help.

College Park is really the most fun and interesting University to attend. Through my first year and a half here so far I have made some cool new friends and gone to some really wild parties. Another reason why I enjoy being at Marylland is because of all the intramural and club sports offered. From basketball to swimming to badminton whatever sport that you like or are interested in Maryland most likely offers it.

    Bang for the buck

I would say you get a pretty good bang for your buck at the University of Maryland. If you came to college to learn then you Maryland will satisfy your needs or if you came to college to party Maryland will also satisfy your needs in that department as well.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips to all future students are to make sure you get all of your core classes out of the way (don't worry if you dont know what core classes are you will learn about them when you go to freshman orientation). For your dining plan points make sure that you budget wisely; if you can try to use less than $8.00 per meal becuase you dont want use all your money quickly trust me. Lastly, Maryland is a very large school and has a lot of students attending there, so if you think you will have trouble meeting new friends you can start by meeting people in your residence hall. Also you can gain some friends by attending events or join a club that interests you that way you meet people that you have things in common with.

Definitely a GREAT choice if you are in-state. If you are out-of-state, this is still a wonderful university to choose, however, it is pretty expensive when you're out of state. Regardless of where you go, if you are out-of-state student, you are bound to be paying a lot more than in-state students.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely look into what clubs and sports you are interested in and if the school offers it. UMD has a GREAT football team, soccer team, and we're the best in lacrosse of course.
Keep an open mind to all colleges. Some are more conservative than others. UMD is very open to all ethnicities, backgrounds, and sexual orientations.
DON'T slack off senior year even though it is very tempting.
STAY INVOLVED!! When you get to college, it's still super important to stay involved with campus activities and community service.
Seek out help early. Don't wait till the last minute to go to a professor to get help.
Use your resources!! There are so many on campus that it's almost impossible not to find the answer you're looking for!

I'm currently a Computer Science major in the Honors program. There are a multitude of classes available from many different fields so it is possible to take classes that are not in your major and enjoy them. For example, I took a class on classical film studies and greatly enjoyed it and learned a lot about film. Within my major however, the schedule is static until junior year, when it is possible to choose from several 400 level classes and focus on a particular aspect of CS.

    Am enjoying being here

College Park has a great campus, hundreds of clubs that can be joined and a variety of sports teams. Personally, I've been involved with club fencing and volleyball. Both teams have excellent people, and are very accepting. Even though the campus is large and there are a lot of students on campus, it's not hard to find yourself a niche where you find like-minded people who share your interests. The food is decent. Some may criticize it, but there is a large selection of food to choose from and it doesn't generally get repetitive. The Diner is open pretty late until about midnight, and you can buy food from one of the convenience stores near the dorms.

    Bang for the buck

For roughly 20,000 a year, UMD is a superb college. Make the most of it by taking interesting courses and joining clubs.

    Tips for prospective students

There is a lot of walking across campus, it may take 20 minutes to get from one end of campus to the other. You don't need a car the first year, as you should be living on campus and near your classes. If you want to leave campus, there is a free bus that takes you to the metro or other surrounding locations. Bikes are always a good option if your classes are far, but you will want to lock it up with a U-lock and maybe something else too to make sure that it doesn't get stolen.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who enjoys a good bit of nature around them (the landscaping is well done), and doesn't mind a bit of a workout walking to class would be well suited to UMD.

It feels great to be at such an amazing school. I am always learning something new. I'm not only learning during class I'm also learning outside of the class. All the professors I've had are very knowledgeable and have been very great at teaching their subjects. Here at UMD, even if you're shy like myself or outgoing you can always find the professors to be approachable. They're not as scary as people might think. They are very insightful and inspiring. If you're not understanding something you're learning you can always get help during your professors' office hours or from your TA. One thing is for sure, you will always be learning something new or getting more valuable knowledge on subjects you're familiar with.

    Am enjoying being here

I live on campus and it is definitely worth it. Everyday there's something new to do and you can never get bored. I enjoy the fact that I can do different things with my friends on campus and even better I actually enjoy doing my homework as a group with them at the library. McKeldin library is definitely my favorite spot to do homework while also getting the chance to hang out with my friends. There is so much to do and enjoy on campus, we even have our own hang out spot which is called Terp Zone. Terp Zone is definitely the spot to be every night there's some thing new going on; from bowling competitions to pool table competitions. I definitely enjoy the growing diversity on campus and the fact that you can fit right in.

    Bang for the buck

I'm an in-state student however; it is worth every penny. UMD is definitely a well balanced school, where fun and studying is equal. Everyone is respectful of each other and being in a place where you can always have a great time whether you're studying or taking a break is worth the cost. Not only that, but the school spirit is like no other. :)

    Am learning a lot

Although I have the typical huge lecture halls I have learned so much. Granted it does take more personal motivation than in high school, the teachers (for the most part) are enthusiastic and there to help you every step of the way by holding office hours.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here, but freshman year was rough. I would STRONGLY recommend joining clubs and sports teams or making a study group that way you can make such a huge university feel small and intimate. It's all about making friends and having people you can spend time with (which I didn't really do until my second semester!). However, there are SOOOOOO many things to do for fun from the social life, to DC trips, to attending D1 games.

    Bang for the buck

Sooooo affordable and so many opportunities for financial aid. If you do not get enough money you can always talk to the financial aid office and they may give you more money. The housing isn't amazing (just relatively small), but for what you are paying and the social experience it comes with you couldn't beat it.

    Tips for prospective students

Use Mckeldin library for studying (your dorm is almost never productive), visit the Stamp between classes (they almost always have some event with free food or you could visit the amazing coffee bar), walk to your classes before classes start (the campus is so huge and it'll take forever to find the rooms), don't buy your books from UMD because they are expensive (bookholders in CP is better), and utilize the writing center and math success program (only reason I aced math).

Great for these types of students

Students who want to have a ton of oppurtunties; from clubs, to social activities, to internships and jobs (DC is so close!). Students who LOVE school spirit, us Terps go crazy. And for students who are serious about their education.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot my first semester at UMD, not only academics but some life lessons also. Almost all my teachers were wonderful, and willing to help if asked. Even in some of my larger classes (100+), and hopefully that will continue throughout the next few years here. Its hard not to procrastinate, but its best to stay on top of things and really study if you want to be the straight A student you were in high school.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a lot of fun. You can make numerous amounts of friends and you can always find something to do, whether on Rt. 1 or hopping on the metro and going to DC. My roommate and I also took full advantage of RedBox in stamp, or the rental movies in our building, on those evenings where you really just need a break. There's always a party or some activity going on as well.

    Bang for the buck

Most states have cheaper in state tuition than UMD does; BUT it is in excellent education and a wonderful place... so the price can still give a bang for the buck!

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for all weather, some classes (most classes) are at least a ten minute walk, if not more. Yes this includes all types of weather: wind, rain, snow, hot and cold. Rain boots and umbrellas are a must. So are walkable shoes and warm jackets. Be social with your floor and do the activities for freshmen at the beginning of the year.
Just don't forget to work hard and also have some fun!

Great for these types of students

Social students that enjoy walking, and can handle large workloads.

I am an electrical engineer at the University of Maryland. I was accepted into the engineering school so I have been taking tough classes since freshman year. For an EE major specifically, be prepared to work. You will get the grade based on how much work you put into it. I just completed my 1st semester of sophomore year and honestly, College is like high school with a much higher magnitude. You can't bs your way through everything but getting B's is as easy as cramming the night before (atleast for most the technical courses). I have taken programming, digital logic design and numbering techniques for my engineering courses. I can honestly say, I do not remember THAT much of what I learned. Again, you get out of it what you put in, but it isn't impossible to scrap through without being an A+ student every day.

College Park is one of the larger campus' in the country. With over 40 thousand students, you will always have opportunity to have a good time. There are numerous clubs to joins, over 50 fraternities/sororities,and so many activities around College Park. You can go bowling or watch a movie at stamp. There are sport bars and a ton of places to eat on route one. A beautiful area called La Plata Beach where you can play volleyball, football, soccer and so much more. And dont forget about the first class gym that is right next to the Freshman dorms. If you go to CP and want to have fun, YOU WILL FIND THINGS TO DO TO HAVE FUN.

    Bang for the buck

Make sure you apply for as much financial aid as possible. I only have to pay about 7,000 dollars a semester after loans, scholarships and grants. I know friends who only have to play a measly 700 dollars because of their specific situations. Overall, I think UMD is totally worth the money. They have a great sports program, many things to do, and great teachers (Including top Business and Engineering Programs). You will not regret going to the University of Maryland and even if you are out of state, it would be worth it to come here.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you apply early, dont wait for the later deadline, have your application in by the end of December. Make sure your SAT's are in a good range (1800+). I felt like Maryland really looked at those over other things. If you are coming to UMD, MAKE SURE YOU ASK OTHERS ABOUT TEACHERS. Whatever classes you signed up for, make sure your taking the best teacher. IT really doest matter when it comes down to it for grades. Ourumd.com. Great site for reviews and statistics. Use It!

Great for these types of students

Active, leader seeking, prideful students. There are so many opportunities and Maryland is always booming with things to do. If you dont like sitting around and being bored, Maryland is the place for you. It isn't the most peaceful and quiet place but I enjoy that.

Here at CCSU the learning is not only in the classroom, but on campus. Not everyone values education, but personally I feel that 9 out of 10 times I'm learning some good information for life. The best thing is that a lot of the professors here find ways to integrate the information they teach you in class with real-life scenarios; it could be that maybe that's how my major is, but maybe not. I think it's important to be able to know how to apply the knowledge in class with the knowledge in the real world and that's just what the classes offer. Some courses even allow you to interact with people in the real world to get a hands-on experience and it could just make the semester all that much more interesting and fun. If you're looking for more than just textbook learning, you may want to look into CCSU.

There many events on campus to do, but I'm very shy. I attend events here and there with my friends, and I try to get as much out of the college life as possible without finding myself in bad positions. I love my dorm and I'm honestly very comfortable in it. There are many guys on my floor and they love playing pranks on us, but they are great fun-loving guys. I've made some good friends here, and some of the professors are beyond fun to be around..good times in class. I would say though that some unfortunate events occurring on campus have been stressful, but the unwanted activity has calmed down for the mean time.

    Bang for the buck

Ok, so most of the classes are worth paying for, but I do think they could be easy on the tuition and offer a bit more financial aid. It's well known at this school that students take a while to graduate, and in my experience it seems as if it's because not enough classes for certain majors are offered (not enough professors), and a lot of the time the proper information you need is not provided. Some of the things in the buildings need to be maintained more, because I do admit I fear for my life in certain elevators. The parking for students is so LIMITED and FAR during the day between 7AM and 5PM, and it can cause a headache especially when the weather is not all that amazing outside. The food can be good on some days but the variety could be better and so could the portions they serve, seeing as how we pay thousands of dollars (w/ no refund of unused funds at the end of the semester) every semester. I'm not trying to complain, but I do have to add that the school could put a little more money into security (i.e. security cameras) because I've noticed that we could never make out suspects in crime alerts from the security cameras around campus..what a shame.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're sociable and responsible I would advise you apply. It's very important to know how things work around this campus and be aware of your surroundings because the punishments at this school are not little slaps on the wrist, even for first time offenders. I'd also advise that you get out and explore the campus and try to join a club or two; you can learn so much from clubs you never even thought you'd be interested in, and you could meet so many people. I also advise that you go to class and keep up with your school work as any college because in some classes you can fall way behind if you miss even one class. Also find a friend with a car or prepare that bus money if you want to get around.

Great for these types of students

CCSU in my opinion is great for students who are sociable and outgoing, and most importantly ready to learn! I don't advise you come to CCSU if you're naive because it could have negative effects. Be ready to know how to take care of yourself and your responsibilities.
