Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot People say college is the best experience of your life. And as the years continue I am positive you will go from liking college to loving it. The University provides a course guide during summer orientation that is full of hundreds of different courses. You can take just about anything you want and learn about things you never even imagined you would be interested in. As the years goes on you will discover that everything you learn will be related in some way to another class, required reading or something that you hear on TV. There is nothing like the college classroom experience.
Am enjoying being here High school may have been a very memorable experience and you may have had great friendships. But there is nothing like college. You will meet people from all over the United States with different backgrounds and ways of doing things than you. You will meet people from all across the world who have come to study just like you. It is the most interesting thing and an experience that you can only truly appreciate at the University. You will never get another opportunity to live, eat, sleep, and have conversations with people your same age from all over. It will leave an impression on your life.
Bang for the buck College is expensive everywhere. But above that U of M is noted for its reputation. You will work hard, be tired, stressed, and annoyed at times with school, professors, and classmates. But KNOW that your hard work and dedication to your future will pay off. It is definitely an accomplishment to be able to say that you graduated from the University of Michigan.
Tips for prospective students Once you get on campus and move your belongings in get acclimated immediately with the campus. It may seem large at first but you will soon find it is not. Find out what buildings your classes will be in BEFORE the first day of class. If you are undecided make it a point before the end of the first semester to go to the Career Resource Center and take a survey or self assessment test. Using these tools in addition to experimenting with classes will help prevent you from staying in college forever because you are unsure of what you want to at that moment. Join at least one group or extracurricular club on campus. This will help your social life remain balanced and build your network.
Great for these types of students The University is great for students who want to challenge themselves academically and socially with people who may be different from them. It will provide a real world atmosphere and not set limitations on the kinds of people you will meet or interact with. U of M is great for people who are Leaders and Best at heart and have every intention of being successful in their careers and in their lives.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes here are pretty intense. I'm a student in the college of Engineering, where group work is an important part of most classes. Most of the core classes like calculus, physics, and chemistry are very large classes, but they all have smaller recitation sections. Other classes, like language classes, are very small and interactive. Also, the size of the university makes it so that there are classes offered that professors have a personal interest in. Last year I took an art class through the German department; I learned how to weld, carve stone, and work with metal and wood in German. I've also had the chance to take a German soccer class and a German for Engineers class, and to major in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Science because the university has the resources to offer these programs. As I get into higher level courses, the level of learning has definitely increased.
Am enjoying being here I am definitely enjoying being here. There is something for everyone here, from IM or Club Sports to Greek Life. There are church groups, pre-professional groups, cultural groups, political groups, service groups, and even there is even a squirrel club. There is always something going on somewhere on campus, and you can always find people to share in your activities.
Bang for the buck This university is expensive, especially if you're an out of state student, but the percentage of students who get jobs after graduation speaks for itself, especially in this economy.
Tips for prospective students Apply early! You'll find out if you got in a lot earlier, and it will increase your chance of getting in, too. Also, don't expect A's here. There is a high level of competition and you can't just skate by just by going to classes and taking notes. One more thing, don't be intimidated by the huge size of this school. It's really easy to make your own smaller school within the bigger university, especially if you're in the engineering school, school of kinesiology, or the business school.
Great for these types of students Any student who loves a challenge will thrive here. There is a high level of competition here, but there are also classes and departments where group work is the main method for homework. All types of students can thrive here, they just need to find their niche.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I have learned so much after only one semester. I am in the School of Nursing, and I have classes with mostly the same group of freshman nurses (besides my English and electives). We all help each other study for our exams. Many of the courses I take are challenging, but the information is so important for my major, so it is worth it. All my friends feel they are gaining valuable knowledge in their majors as well. College work is much more difficult than the work in High School- everything is faster paced and more in depth, but as long as you realize this and put in the extra time studying, you can be successful. I feel like I have also learned non academic life skills such as being more independent. There is a huge variety of classes you can take in many different fields- something for everyone. Classes are HARD- but you will learn more than you ever thought possible.
Am enjoying being here I absolutely love my college experience so far! I have met so many wonderful friends, and there is something here for everyone. There is great art and music, many different cultures, and interesting speakers and professors. All of the people you encounter will give you new views on many world events. The diversity is incredible. I am so happy I joined Circle K, which is a community service club, as well as being involved in Nurse Council. Joining clubs introduced me to many new people and also helped me figure out what is really important to me.
Bang for the buck Obviously this is an expensive university, but the facilities are great- you have opportunities to go to several libraries, ride the buses anywhere on campus, eat in any cafeteria you want with your meal plan, and the classrooms are all nice and clean. My professors have been great- they really care about their students and they are so intelligent. They all hold office hours and make it easy for you to get help outside of class. This university is well worth the money, I cannot imagine a better school! The reputation of graduating from the University of Michigan makes all your hard work worth it, and opens many doors.
Tips for prospective students -Take a visit to campus during the summer and think if you can see yourself going to school there. Make sure to check out the campus and the downtown.
-Don't be afraid to ask questions! Seriously, we've all been in the same position as you.
-Don't slack your senior year of High School- admissions will look at all your transcripts, keep up your good work.
-Be outgoing at orientation- I made some great friends there. Orientation is a great chance to meet people with the same major as you.
-Get involved in activities on campus- try it and you might like it! There are tons of organizations to choose from.
-Lay down rules with your roommate when you first meet to avoid future conflicts in the future.
-Pack carefully, bring things like a fan and all of your bathroom stuff- my roommate is from Missouri and she brought everything except her toothbrush, not a big deal, but funny.
-Be friendly in your dorm, you can meet lots of people!
-Buy tickets for the football games- everyone goes
-If you get homesick, don't worry, it's normal, you will get adjusted.
-Make sure to find out where your classes are before the first day of class- you will save yourself A LOT of hassle and stress.
-Know your professors- take advantage of office hours, they will know your face and you can get valuable help.Great for these types of students Great for any student who loves a challenge and who wants to experience people different from themselves. People who are open-minded and like a fast paced life will love the University of Michigan.

Great for these types of students It is a great school for those who thrive under challenges. Most of the Universities programs are ranked top ten in the nation, if not higher, so it is a great choice for undecided students as well.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Didn't know I could learn as much as I did this past year. The school had so much to offer for my program and I couldn't have picked a better school.
Am enjoying being here The environment is perfectly ideal. Gorgeous campus completely intertwined in the beautiful town of Ann Arbor. It is not just University buildings that are separate from the town it is built in, but fits in like a glove. It is an amazing place to live with such a loving and unified student body. The faculty of professors give you the individual attention of a small school with the excitement and bold scale of a large university. The football games are incredible and not to be missed! I never feel in danger on campus.
Bang for the buck Although the school is obviously expensive, it could not have nicer facilities. I do not feel like we, as students, are not getting what we paid for. The financial aid department is very helpful and understanding of any needs. If this is the school for you, they will make sure it is not an option because of money.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of every moment! The school has so much to offer, it would be a shame to let the 4 precious years you have here go away without being able to get all the benefits from this amazing school. There are always activities and groups to be a part of. Figure out what interests you and get involved.
Great for these types of students Well-rounded, determined, confident, caring, responsible kids fill the student body.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The classes are engaging and powerful. Because UM is such a large university, they offer so a varied selection of classes, so you are able to delve into your interests while also pursuing your major.
Am enjoying being here I came to University of Michigan knowing nobody, and now I have so many friends. Everyone is so friendly and I couldn't imagine going anywhere else.
Bang for the buck As an out-of-state student, I have to admit that the tuition is ridiculously expensive. Everything in the area has prices jacked up. All-in-all, I still couldn't imagine going anywhere else, but I wish they offered more merit scholarships.
Tips for prospective students VISIT VISIT VISIT!!!! When you visit a campus, you really get the feeling if you belong.
Great for these types of students Smart, outgoing, friendly, caring, fun, social...really anyone!
UM stresses diversity, so really you will find all types of students hereLogin to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot U of M is a wonderful place to study anything your heart could possibly desire. I've meet from Michigan that go there to study from chemical engineer to music, and all of them look happy, successful, and proud. While I don't much about all the academics, I know that Michigan offers liberal arts, engineering, medicine, law, and everything in between. Mandated classes tend to have large audiences, but more professionalized courses tend to grow smaller.
If you have doubts, the campus has enormous libraries, filled with thousands of books and nice places were to study.
I would say that as long as you don't get too distracted by the active Greek life of the university, and you put proper attention to your studies, you should do great things at MichiganWill enjoy being here Ann Arbor is probably the best, middle-sized city in all of Michigan. Filled with theatres, movie houses, lots of coffee-shops (and probably the biggest Borders store I have seen yet) and all other kinds of stores, some located within giant Briarwood Mall, there's always something to do or somewhere to go at Ann Arbor.
During winter, as in most of Michigan, the weather can be a tad unpredictable, both is usually characterized by freezing temperatures and snowfall once in a while. However, the city is great for outdoor experiences during spring, summer and fall. Even in winter, you can always be sure that great woodlands or skiing areas cannot be too far from Ann Arbor.
The city as a giant art fair every year or so, the best Japanese restaurant I have ever tried, and a rich past characterized by the settlement of mostly Germans in the city a century or more ago.Bang for the buck U of M can be extremely affordable, as long as you are a resident of Michigan. Since it's technically a public university, U of M can afford to offer low tuition to most Michigan residents, as long as they can prove they haven residents for at least three consecutive years.
For those coming from outside, the academics that U has to offer, plus the many opportunities that come from obtaining a degree from Michigan, its definitely worth the tuition costs, and even for non-residents, U of M's cost is still somewhat low compared to other great schools in Michigan.Tips for prospective students If you live in Michigan, you should definitely visit one of the school's information fairs. They give a tour of the university, help you with the application process by giving tips and important info, you get to observe the city of Ann Arbor in the process (or are welcomed to do so after the visit is over), and you usually get a pretty realistic glance of student life. Last time I visited Michigan for an information fair, we were received by a fraternity's party occuring in one of the many fraternities at Michigan. That further boosts the belief that there is always something to do at Michigan.
Great for these types of students Party people, as long as you keep things in moderation, you will ADORE Michigan. For students interested in receiving the best public education in Michigan, don't forget U of M. Most of all, coffee adicts, book snugglers, peace-loving hippies, library recluses, concert and moviegoers, organice eaters, Chinese addicts, and winter sports people, Ann Arbor is calling.

Categories Rating Comments Did learn a lot Not only did I learn a lot academically, I grew astronomically as a person. The campus is diverse and exciting and there are always new opportunities for students to expand their horizons. Classes are fun and challenging and intellectually stimulating.
Did enjoy being here I loved the campus, students, classes and Ann Arbor in general. Campus is closely intertwined with downtown Ann Arbor and there are always all sorts of fun events going on. Michigan football games are amazing even if you aren't too big into sports. The campus is beautiful in every season. Classes are challenging but there is still time to make and enjoy being with great friends.
Bang for the buck I loved every minute and would do it again in a second. The price is totally worth it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Classes here are intense, but doable. GSI's (Graduate Student Instructors) will always be there to help you get through the class and will help address the struggles you may be facing. Office hours are always a possibility to get extra help outside of the classroom. I am in the College of Literature, Science & the Arts and therefore, I take more liberal arts classes. This university, however, has many schools dedicated to student interests, including the Business School, Kinesiology, School of Education and the Engineering School, to name a few. Advisors and tutors are always available to help students adapt to this campus. I am learning a lot in the classroom setting, but I also learn a lot outside of the classroom. I have had several classes broadcast lectures live on the internet, meaning I would be able to be in my room listening/watching lecture.
Am enjoying being here This university is FILLED with resources and organizations. There are organizations affiliated with religious aspects, race, ethnicity, year, sports, major and any interest one can think of. These organizations are open to the whole student body and they create families. Being away from home can be hard and these resources help make it easier here because they become the ones you turn to when you need anything. I have met people in organizations that have offered to show me areas around Michigan and neighboring states and I have also made connections that have helped me obtain jobs as well as internships.
Bang for the buck Michigan is expensive, whether you are in state or out-of-state. I pay out-of-state tuition, which makes it harder because it's over 40k. However, this university gives thousands of students scholarships to be able to attend and not worry about tuition rates. They are very generous with this and outside scholarships can also help. Advisers also help students scope out possible scholarships and internships that may apply for them. It is worth it; once you leave this university, you will see the endless opportunities. This university is one of the best in the world, imagine being an alumni from here!
Tips for prospective students Do not be afraid to apply, whether because of tuition rates or admission rates. It is possible to get in and be able to afford it! Once here, join organizations because that is how you will make some of the greatest connections. Become friends with your roommate and establish rules before the school year begins so there aren't any confusions later on. Also figure out where your classes will be and order your books early! There are plenty of sites that will help you find cheaper books. Ask around -- maybe other students have those books and you can just borrow! Save your money because once in college, money will go really fast. Try to limit how much you spend a week and go to stores like Meijer or Target for essentials because they are much cheaper than any store on campus. In addition, meet with your adviser to learn of the available resources on campus, such as the Career Center or CAPS. Be friendly! Whether you may have been shy or not in high school, this is a chance to start over new. Make friends with those on your floor, your Resident Adviser, and peers!
Great for these types of students This university is great for those who are dedicated to facing challenges. This university is prestigious and to keep that reputation, it wants students to show they are the Leaders & Best!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Educational benefits from Michigan stem mainly from its size. The size creates amazing educational opportunities for anyone, with any interest. For example, I entered college wanting to major in chemistry, but changed to physical anthropology. I was lucky to be at UMich, because it just happens to have a top 3 anthropology program. That scenario occurs fairly often. Learning a lot, however, is up to the student at this size institution. You have to choose the right classes and take advantage of the millions of resources available: science learning center, advice online, office hours, etc.
Am enjoying being here Football Saturday is the best night of the week. A motto almost every student lives by. Don't shy away if you do not know or like football though! I knew nothing and did not enjoy watching football when I entered Michigan. Enjoying football Saturday is more about the environment and the friends than the sport itself. The streets fill with students and alum - which is great, considering UMich has the largest living alumni network in the world.
Aside from football, a large school means there is something for everyone. There are liberal co-operative living styles, quiet dorms for upper classmen, residential colleges for science or arts or a number of other topicsBang for the buck Michigan is the second most expensive public college in the country. While as an instate student, it is worth it to me, I would not consider it if I was paying out of state tuition. There are many who disagree with me on this, however. UMich has a great international reputation, which will help with job searches post graduation - the only thing that really should determine how worth a college is. The only schools that consistently compare better than UMich are ivies, and they are even more expensive.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of resources available - ask GSIs, Professors, advisers and other students what these are; Science Learning Center, Advice Online, Michigan Undergraduate Research Journal
Get involved - go to Festifall and join organizations, most people meet their friends through their extra curricular, and they are such fun
Find your niche - the school is big, so don't get lost. There are so many smaller groups to fit in, like one of the residential colleges, or a social or professional fraternity.Great for these types of students Active, competitive, liberal

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot You hear a lot of people tell you know that high school is the best time of your life and in some respects it is, but its also a time to buckle down and get the grades so you can go to the college of your choice! I can't strive to you how important that is. Once you finally graduate high school its a sign of relief, and you're on to college! Whether you go away for college or stay at home college is what matters, because after this it's all you! I found that the people are nicer and no one is caught up in petty stuff because to be honest no one really cares if you wore the same shirt twice. The professor's will help you if you put you're share of work in. In college you have a lot more free time and a lot more choices!! It's up to you to
Will enjoy being here The Ann Arbor campus is very beautiful there is so much going on yet it's very peaceful. Michigan takes a lot of pride in their students grades and through their students actions and professors you can see that.
Bang for the buck Ann Arbor is knows for being expensive and yes it is a lot more expensive then if you were living at home but going away and getting that experience is worth a lifetime! Being on your own is one of the greatest things.
Great for these types of students University of Michigan is good for any student that knows what they want and has the passion to go for it.

Categories Rating Comments Bang for the buck Let's face it, all colleges and universities are expensive. This school is admittedly a bit stingy with scholarship money, but in the end, the U of M experience is worth the cost.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in a club or sport, it is a great way to meet people with a common interest. Don't procrastinate, make sure you set time aside for schoolwork, but also for socializing too...you need to find a balance.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students looking for a large college, that can easily be made smaller by joining clubs, in a city with lots of things to do. It is also for hard workers who don't mind sitting down and studying when the time comes.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Michigan is truly an incredible place with incredible people. There is a lot of school pride about both academics and athletics, and although the academics are challenging, there is a good combination of studying and fun. I would recommend U of M to anyone.
Tips for prospective students You need to keep your GPA high and get involved at school. Michigan is big on being involved: everyone I've ever met here is in at least one student organization trying to accomplish something. If the university can see that you're a go-getter, they are more likely to let you in even if your grades are not quite as high as they should be.
Academic Rigor The academics are definitely challenging at Michigan. Obviously it depends on what you study, but I would say that overall you are going to have to adjust your study habits if you don't already have them, and you're going to need to study A LOT. The math and science classes are especially rigorous, as well as the engineering classes.
Dorm Life My dorm experience was very positive. I lived on North Campus as a freshman, which actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Yes, riding a bus to class every day wasn't great, but I got used to it quickly and the fact that there isn't much going on on North Campus brought my hall closer. I am still close with many of the people I met in the dorms, and it is an experience I wouldn't trade for anything.
Food and Dining The food at Michigan really depends on which dining hall you go to. Overall, it is decent, but for example North Quad has much better food than Bursley does. There are lots of options for vegetarians, healthy choices, and lots of variety, however. As far as off campus eating, there are many different choices. On State Street there is more affordable food, and on Main there are nicer restaurants. Overall Ann Arbor has many different types of food, and it would take forever to try them all!
What to do for fun Of course there is a decent amount of partying, not just in Greek life but most places on campus. However, there are definitely people who don't drink, smoke, or party too. It is not hard to find people who like the same things as you in a school as big as Michigan. Sporting events are always fun (football, basketball, hockey, etc.), as well as walking around to shop on State Street, going to a movie, etc.
Bang for the buck Michigan is definitely expensive. Although it is worth it to me, and I am in state, you have to be sure that this school is where you want to be. As far as public schools go, Michigan is one of the most expensive.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Michigan is full of tradition. For example, legend goes that if you step on the M on the middle of the Diag (the center of campus) before your first Blue Book exam, you will fail it. Even students who have already taken Blue Book exams avoid stepping on it out of fear. I know I definitely don't step on it! There are many other examples of these sorts of traditions.
Great for these types of students You have to be willing to put in the effort and really take advantage of the situation you're put in and the opportunities you've been given. Michigan can be the best thing that ever happened to you, but you have to work hard for it.
Clubs and Activities There is a ridiculous number of clubs and organizations at Michigan. Take advantage of it! They are a great way to meet people, get involved, find something you're passionate about, and build a resume. One of the things I love most about U of M's campus is that it is constantly alive: there is an energy around campus of things getting accomplished, changes being made.
Greek Life Greek life plays a significant role on campus, but not a huge one. I have friends in Greek life and friends not in Greek life, and it doesn't really make a difference. It is all just about common interests. Personally, Greek life wasn't for me, but this is a personal choice. There are many opportunities for socializing in and outside of Greek life.
Campus Safety I never feel unsafe on campus. Most areas are well lit. Obviously you should avoid walking alone at night, but I would say that's true of most places. Of course crimes do occur, and it is helpful to travel in a group.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I have friends who are attending the university, and from what I have heard from them, and from the research I have done, UofM offers an excellent education.
Will enjoy being here From having excellent athletics, to offering extra curricular activities, there are numerous things to enjoy about the campus.
Bang for the buck While scholarships are hard to come by for UofM, the education and life experiences you will recieve while attending the university, in a sense outwiegh the money you will spend.
Tips for prospective students Know what you are wanting to go into, and if UofM offers a program for it, check into it.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Before students even start classes, U of M is ready with arms wide open and full of opportunities. There are SO many people, SO many things to see, and SO many things to learn. The best thing about U of M is that you don't only learn in the classroom. You are exposed to different cultures every day (meeting people from different continents is inevitable in a school of 40,000+ people), there is a huge variety of student organizations (from pre-medical club to tennis club to squirrel club), and many other valuable programs and resources (research, study abroad, volunteering, field work and a LOT more). It's a place where you can make your [reasonable] dreams become a reality. Want to swim with dolphins? Want to dig for artifacts in Egypt? Want to see a real-life brain surgery? U of M can help you. Not only do students gain book knowledge essential for their careers, but they also gain a better understanding of the world, of natural and institutional systems, and ultimately of themselves and their purpose on this earth.
Am enjoying being here Yes, U of M has a great reputation for its academics and research, but it's definitely not a nerdy let's-study-all-the-time school (although if you do want to study all the time, there is a library open 24/7 and countless other study spots)! There are always weekend activities (planned by the school and not), awesome and often original plays, comedy shows, great restaurants right around the corner, famous people dropping by now and then, and of course lots of people around to just talk to. College is an experience more than it is a place, and U of M is definitely an awesome place to have that experience.
Bang for the buck U of M gives great financial aid. It's missing a star though because it's a lot harder for the international and out of state students. Cost is about $22,000 for in-state students, and it's TOTALLY worth it, especially with all the need-based scholarships they give. However, it's about double for those not from Michigan, and it depends on you if you think all the awesome-ness of Michigan is worth the dent in your budget.
Tips for prospective students -Visit the campus and get some familiarity with it before you start. You'll get a hard start from the other freshman/transfer students that are wandering around asking upperclassmen where in the world they are.
-It's better to play it safe and not overload your class schedule during your first semester. It takes some time to get used to things. You'll thank yourself when you get your transcript.
-Take advantage of the opportunities U of M gives, especially that of research. U of M is making lots of advances in many fields (cure for cancer, anyone?), and you are welcome to be a part of it.
-Make friends quickly. You'll find that you'll need them quickly. Be prepared for lots of Facebook invites!Great for these types of students -Ready-to-learn attitude (have hangers in their minds for new ideas)
-Self-motivational (willing to cook what will be on their silver platter)
-Ambitious (U of M's a prestigious university. It's the Harvard of the West. Tell that to your friends).
-Diligent (It's a tough school. It breaks and makes you. It's not like high school or community college. Be prepared to study).
-Stable-minded (or close to it because things can get pretty stressful).
-Ready-to-have-some-fun! (Did I mention it wasn't a nerdy school?)Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I'm in a lot of large first-year introduction courses, but if you are determined and can stay focused, you will do fine and learn a lot.
Am enjoying being here There is so much to do around campus; Michigan basically has any sort of group you can imagine. Ann Arbor is a great place to be, and has an awesome environment where having fun is just as important as working hard.
Bang for the buck Out-of-state tuition is a little rough, but being a season-ticket holder of the big house games is almost worth it...
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus. If it feels right, it probably is.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Amazing school. Has so much to offer and a great experience for all students. Also the programs are endless and you can choose from your interests.
Tips for prospective students Try everything. Letting yourself learn and experience new things will not only help you grow as a person but also guide you in the direction that best inspires you.
Academic Rigor Michigan is a tough school no doubt but if you got accepted you should be able to handle it. Just don't slack off too much.
Dorm Life Living on campus is one of the most rewarding experiences. Your away from parents so now everything rests in your shoulders. It can be peaceful but also loud. So remember that you can always go to the library.
Bang for the buck Financial Aid is a big help. Many students receive a large amount to pay for college. And there are also scholarships always available to students along with work studies and even just regular jobs.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot While the University of Michigan is definitely challenging for anyone that attends, it is definitely rewarding. Professors are attentive, material is relevant though difficult, and the environment for learning is 100 percent effective.
Am enjoying being here Ann Arbor is a wonderful place to live and go to school. There are hundreds of things to do and plenty to see. There are art fairs, museums, film festivals, shops of all varieties, as well as sporting events and intramural activities. The University plays a major role in many of these diversions. U of M contributes multiple libraries, magnificent sporting events like football games at the Big House, and other events including guest speakers like former President Clinton. Ann Arbor has recently become the filming site for numerous movies like the Scream series and the latest films with George Clooney and Jason Segel, which adds an unique hollywood element to the city. On a social scale, while everyone may not know everyone, students definitely form close relationships with others and are most often kind and obliging during classes. Overall, the University of Michigan is a wonderful place to be with great company and a lot to do!
Bang for the buck Tuition is only getting higher, but at the University of Michigan financial aid counselors help students figure out how to pay for school, where they can find additional scholarships, and how to file a loan. Because tuition costs so much, I truly believe that the University drives itself to become better for its students. In addition to one of the greatest educations in the country, students benefit from extensive libraries, numerous sporting facilities, and the updated campus grounds and buildings.
Tips for prospective students The University of Michigan prides itself in the diversity of its students. So, if you are in the process of applying, write your essay unique to your sense of self rather than what you think the University hopes to hear. If you are attending U of M in the near future keep in mind that though you have worked hard to earn that acceptance letter, the work is not nearly over. College is difficult, especially one of the best in the nation. So, prioritize studying and homework and remember why you're here, but don't be too hard on yourself if you don't perform as you have in high school within the first semester. It took me my entire freshmen year to really understand what the professors wanted from me, what my study schedule should be, and to really delve further into ideas than I had previously. Therefore, work hard, believe in yourself, and have fun. Go Blue!
Great for these types of students Hard-workers, Studious, Unique, Driven, Determined, Artistic & Non-Artistic

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot University of Michigan has top programs in almost every field of study. You will be challenged, but there are tons of resources to keep you on track. Don't be afraid to get a tutor or go in for office hours, or just get a study buddy. Both your fellow classmates and professors want you to succeed.
Am enjoying being here There are so many activities to choose from, for your first year just pick one and dedicate yourself to it. Once you find out how much you can handle outside of schoolwork, you can join other groups. There are thousands of student groups and they all attend a festival at the beginning of first semester so you can scope them out and choose the right fit for you!
Bang for the buck University of Michigan isn't the cheapest school in the country, but it definitely will be worth it in the long run. Graduates tend to come out making more than most other schools, so you'll have any loans paid back in no time.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot There is no school more superior to UofM in Michigan. It's the best of the best.
Will enjoy being here Ann Arbor is a really artsy town so there are always cool fairs and even cooler stores around if you want to wander.
Bang for the buck Really expensive school, but if you want to be the best, then money doesn't really matter.
Tips for prospective students Be careful in Ann Arbor. It's a pretty good neighbor hood, but it still can be dicey at night.
Great for these types of students Students who want to study hard and be really successful.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot High-quality academic programs. This is the best public university in the country and will provide an education rivaling that of the Ivy League. Its alumni network is extremely useful, too. If you're looking at going into business, Ross is one of the best.
Will enjoy being here Ann Arbor is one of the best college towns out there. Definitely a great place to be.
Bang for the buck U of M is an excellent choice financially for in-state students, but the cost is quite steep for out-of-state students, especially since they're quite stingy with their merit aid. If you're a Michigan resident, this is definitely worth considering over similarly ranked schools in other states, as it's about half the price.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to apply early, as the increasing number of applicants put those who apply after the Early Action deadline at a disadvantage. Since Early Action is non-binding, it's also helpful so that you find out earlier and can begin planning, especially since this year many applicants didn't hear back until the end of April

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are so many academic areas to explore that are bound to fulfill any interest. I have taken classes in biology, chemistry, calculus, anthropology, psychology, and English just in my first year at Michigan! Michigan does a fantastic job making sure my academic experience is well-rounded.
Am enjoying being here There are so many people to meet from so many different parts of the country, as well as the world. Learning takes place outside of the classroom just by experiencing community living in the dorms. I love being involved in dorm life, working in the cafeteria, and participating in activities and service projects through my church in Ann Arbor.
Bang for the buck Tuition and Room/Board is definitely more expensive then I would like it to be. The experience is definitely worth the money. One way I have defrayed the cost of my education is by working in the dining hall, where I have made a lot of friends and have gotten valuable work experience.
Tips for prospective students Don't be shy, meet as many people as possible! You never know who will become a lifelong friend. Sit by people you don't know in the cafeteria, introduce yourself to everyone in your hall, talk to people at bus stops and those who sit next to you in class. Get involved with a group, club, or organization you are interested in as soon as you arrive in Ann Arbor. Do not overload yourself with activities or work hours, because homework and studying will definitely take a long time. Make sure you get to know your professors and GSIs on a more personal level by going to their office hours, even if it is just to introduce yourself. Thoroughly research academic areas of study and do not be afraid to change your major. Do not let the size of the university scare you; if you get involved with activities on campus and make an effort to get to know your professors, GSIs and classmates, the experience will seem smaller.
Great for these types of students Students that may or may not have an idea of what they want to major in, but who can thrive on the fast pace and difficulty of college classes. Michigan is also great for students who enjoy the bustling city of Ann Arbor. For those who are great at meeting and interacting with diverse groups of people, Michigan is a perfect fit. For those who do not have that type of experience, Michigan will definitely challenge them to step out of their comfort zone a bit. I believe Michigan is great for all types of students!

Bang for the buck It's quite expensive but it's worth it if you love it.
Tips for prospective students Don't be intimidated by the size of the school. It's just an opportunity for you to find more people that you can relate and hang out with. Tour our campus before coming and make sure this is the right environment for you.
Great for these types of students If you like to have everything you need at your disposal you'll love it. The buses are always on time and any store you need to get to is close by.
If you love learning you'll do great here. The professors are very enthusiastic. If you want to find the perfect campus activities for you and find your voice, this is the place!Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Could not imagine myself at another school. You meet a world of different people, literally. You receive such a unique education at one of the most amazing university.
Tips for prospective students Explore any subject you have interest in! Do not be afraid to switch career plans. Take advantage of everything and everyone on campus, it is all there to help you1
Academic Rigor Michigan will definitely challenge you but it shapes you into the leaders and best! I value my education so much!
Dorm Life It is a great way to begin your freshman year at a new place. Each dorm is unique and has its own special and 'quirky' qualities. It's the little box that becomes your new home.
Food and Dining Don't fall under and gain the freshman 15! They do, however, have a lot of variety and healthy options if you choose to take a healthy path and not cave and eat all junk.
What to do for fun Join some of the 100s of clubs and organizations on campus. Get involved in IM sports. Make a community through something. Explore Ann Arbor! It is a great walking/running city. You can go to Main Street, Kerrytown, State or South U, or the Arb. Always something to do! When you're 21 the bars! There are many museums and art fairs too!
Bang for the buck The University of Michigan is expensive. However, you are receiving an outstanding education for its price. It is a public university and for in-state students it is definitely worth it. Not having money in college does take away from some of the fun, but it is something some people can't avoid. I may not be too happy when I graduate and will have my whole paycheck go to loans. But I would not give up this experience to go somewhere else.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Don't walk on the 'M' or you will fail our first blue book! Kiss you crush under West Hall and you will get married.
Great for these types of students Students who want a challenge. Also, students who want a challenge but love to maintain a social life. Students who want a cultural experience.
Clubs and Activities There are so many on campus! If you can think of it, there is one. But don't feel overwhelmed. There is Festifall which displays all the clubs and organizations so you can check out the ones you like and get more information!
Greek Life Big part of campus. If you feel that you would like something like that, try it out! But don't worry if it is not your thing, it is not something you have to do.
Campus Safety There are many services on campus to keep you safe. There are many taxi services, campus police, and night rides and walks from late nights at the library for free!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University offered me everything I needed in order to support me while I was away from home. The professors were friendly and the administration was helpful. I would chose this university again in a heartbeat.
Tips for prospective students Do not think that just because you took the class in High School that it is going to be easy this time around, especially with math and science classes. Always attend class, you never know what kind of credit you will get for just being there!
Academic Rigor Sometimes you think the classes are too hard, but in retrospect the difficulty helped me immensely later on in my academic career. Although the classes seemed hard at the beginning, by my senior year it was easy to tell that they classes did not get 'easier,' Michigan just helped me learn how to 'learn.'
Dorm Life The dorms were amazing and the food was good most of the time, which is a plus! The staff in the dorms, RAs and others made sure the quite hours were enforced, but were not super strict. I never had a problem with volume or being told to be quieter in the dorms.
Food and Dining The dining halls are really good, some are better than others and it is easy to learn which are the best! The food around campus is exceptional and there is such a wide variety of cuisines that it is hard to be bored with any type of food. There are also many ways to have most types of food delivered, which is great while studying!
What to do for fun There is so much activity on campus it is almost ridiculous. There is no way one person can do everything that is fun on a given day. There are so many sporting events to attend, and they are all a blast. There is always something to do on nice days in the Diag, whether it is games put on by organizations or laying in the grass and studying or hanging out with friends. The night life is not too crazy, but it is a blast! There is ALWAYS something to do at most every hour of the day, every day!
Bang for the buck Although the education is expensive, especially for out of state students, it is most definitely worth it. There is no other way to put it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You are not supposed to step on the 'M' in the Diag until after your first blue book, or you'll fail your blue book exams. The only way to 'un-do' this hex is to run from the Puma statues at the Natural Science Museum to the Diag at the stroke of midnight before the clock stops tolling, naked. The thing is - the clock doesn't toll between 10pm and 6am.
Also, when you are on orientation you walk through a fountain towards the Undergraduate Library (UGLi) and after you graduate you walk the other way towards Rackam Graduate School.Great for these types of students I would say it is great for all types of students, there is something here to interest everyone.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities to become involved in, and they are all great and friendly. You can see them all in buildings most days of the week running fundraisers by selling food and t-shirts.
Campus Safety The safety is amazing. Although, as a women, I was not always at ease walking home alone in the dark they have an amazing 'safe-walk' service that picks you up and takes you home from any campus building at certain hours of the night. It is amazing.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Attending the University of Michigan is a life changing experience in the best of ways. Not only are all of its programs among the best in the country, but students and Ann Arbor residents are the most friendly people I've ever met. Going to University of Michigan means getting the job you want after graduation and a lot of social and personal growth.
Tips for prospective students If you want to go to U of M, expect to work hard. You won't be one of those kids that goes out partying on week nights (and if you are, don't expect your grades you be decent). To get to U of M, take AP classes in high school (if possible), and don't goof off too much. Preparation is key. It's a big transition.
Academic Rigor Difficulty depends on the major. If you plan on studying engineering, math, or sciences, be prepared for homework and studying every day. For other programs of study, you will also need to work hard, but it is less competitive.
Dorm Life The dorms are where you meet your friends for the rest of your college career! You build relationships with amazing people and create fond memories you will have forever. Michigan dorms are great. There are rules, but you have independence for the most part. Also, you don't have to worry much about cooking, cleaning, etc because it's all done for you.
Food and Dining The food at the dining halls is decent. It's better than having to cook for yourself every night. Ann Arbor also has many places to order take-out from.
What to do for fun Shopping, movies, restaurants, etc all at your fingertips. The University shows movie screenings and hosts mixers many times during the year.
Bang for the buck It's one of the most expensive public universities, but it's worth the cost. A degree from U of M is attractive to employers, meaning potentially higher wages, making the investment worth it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Big House: U of M's stadium is the largest of all colleges.
North Campus: The College of Engineering is spread away from central campus in a section of Ann Arbor with a rural-y feel. You see deer and bunnies on campus.Login to rate or flag the reviews

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Michigan is a very liberal, open-minded, well-rounded school. Students are given a vast number of ways to shine both in the classroom and out. No matter what any student needs, resources are always available to help them get it.
Tips for prospective students Don't get discouraged when you first get to U of M. It can be tough going from being the brightest person in the room to being average in comparison to other students. Keep up the good work you've always done, but don't get upset if you're not number one all the time.
Dorm Life I never lived in the dorms, but my friends that did enjoyed it for the most part.
Food and Dining The dorm dining halls are AWESOME, and there are lots of great places to eat all over central campus.
What to do for fun There's the AA Comedy Club (my favorite), Necto Nightclub, several theatres, walking in the Arb, rock climbing, plenty of bars (for 21+), and over 1,000 clubs to join.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Michigan is a well-rounded school, where sports and school are prominent. You can never be bored in Ann Arbor and there is always something to do. Although it is a massive school, all sorts of clubs and activities make it much much more personal.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to study hard, but all the studying will pay off. It is a very liberal campus.
Academic Rigor Different programs have different rigor, but all promise a challenge. Academics are a strong part of the University. The entire campus works hard.
Dorm Life The dorms aren't great, but the University continues to make improvements every year. Although my dorm room was small, it was not unmanageable. I also spent so much time with my friends, the rooms didn't matter.
Food and Dining The food is surprisingly good, but gets old very quickly because they tend to serve the same stuff over and over again. The worst food is on the weekends and about half of the dining halls close during the weekends. The Markley (a dorm) hide-a-way has spectacular food, but has bad hours. I am a vegetarian and never went hungry. They make sure to have vegetarian and vegan options, along with gluten free options.
What to do for fun Downtown Ann Arbor has a lot of shopping opportunities. Buses can take you to near by malls. The University has several activities always planned. There are constantly plays, sporting events, groups performing and parties.
Bang for the buck In state tuition is great, but out of state tuition is extremely high. I am out of state, but have a scholarship which does help. You do get a great education and the label 'University of Michigan' does a lot of for a college graduate. The name is well known and respected.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The entire campus is quirky but traditional. Every building has a story.
Great for these types of students Any type of student can find a home at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. There is something for everyone.
Clubs and Activities Clubs for anyone, from engineering clubs, art clubs, philanthropy clubs, to the squirrel feeding club. It's hard to narrow it down just to a few! At the beginning of the fall semester, all the clubs set up tables in the diag. This is a great time to explore all the opportunities.
Greek Life I am in a sorority and don't regret it. Greek life is less than 30% of undergraduate campus life, but if you are involved in it, it stands out. It is very traditional at the university. Greek life creates an amazing network and really makes the university seem a lot smaller. Even if you aren't initially interested in greek life, I would suggest rushing because you don't have to commit if you don't like it.
Campus Safety There is a lot of campus safety, as long as you keep common sense with you. I have never had any bad occurrences, although I have heard several stories where there were issues.

Tips for prospective students Be sure to get involved. Join study groups. Enjoy the campus fun.
Academic Rigor The classes are hard. Nothing in high school will completely prepare you for this level of learning. Work hard and reach out when you need it.
Dorm Life The dorm life is great. I have meet wonderful people and we had a great RA. It was a bonus having a kitchen and food available. There was always something going on to participate in.
Food and Dining Dorm food is good and bad. If you have the time to cruise the different dining halls and experience the different foods you will always find something that you like.
What to do for fun Football games, really?!

Tips for prospective students Although the school is big, you need to find your nitche right away. There are things for everyone...you need to be intentional about finding your place and pursuing friendships.
Dorm Life Mostly all freshmen live in the dorms. It's a great community and good way to meet people. Not all of the freshmen dorms are the nicest, but if you choose to live on campus beyond your freshman
Food and Dining There are SO many options and you can usually find something you like to eat.
Bang for the buck As far as in-state tuition goes, it is on the higher side, but you will graduate with an excellent degree
Great for these types of students You need to have a drive to learn...studying is a must.
Clubs and Activities There's literally something for everyone.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Michigan is the perfect balance between academics, athletics, and fun. I personally love that it's such a big school because it gives me the opportunity to meet new and intriguing people every single day. Although the classes are more challenging than I could have ever expected, the amount of knowledge I've obtained in just a single year is unbelievable.
Tips for prospective students I would suggest taking as many AP or honor courses offered at your high schools. It is the only way that will help prepare for the rigorous college curriculum and coming in with credits obtained from taking the AP tests will give you a head start in taking more interesting classes better suited for your intended concentrations, as you will be able to skip all the boring basic required classes.
Academic Rigor For any class you take it's absolutely crucial that you create time everyday to study. The classes are very intense and move at a fast pace that it's important to stay on top of your studies.
Dorm Life My dorm living experience was excellent. My entire hall was like a great big family and by the end of the year we were so comfortable with each other that it was almost as if we had known each other out entire lives. I will be living in a house next year with about 1/4 of my hall mates from my freshman year.
Food and Dining The dining halls are all you can eat and there is always a wide variety of food including vegetarian/vegan options. There are also several different dining services dispersed all around campus that you can choose to eat in at any point of the day.
What to do for fun I love just hanging out in someone's room watching movies and just talking all night long. Also, Ann Arbor being a relatively large city, many artists come to perform in various venues around town. Michigan athletics is also huge, and football season is probably the most exciting time of the year.
Bang for the buck Tuition is very expensive for out of state students, but if you are in state I would say the education one can get from the amount of tuition paid is quite the deal.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One must not step on the M that is located in the middle of campus, as it is said that you will automatically fail any blue book exam taken.
The unique thing about this campus is that it blends in with the downtown Ann Arbor area, and this is advantageous because there are so many different restaurants to go to and cute little vintage clothing stores as well as current boutiques to shop in.Great for these types of students Those who aren't quite sure what they want to do in the future. Michigan offers so many different types of interesting classes (ranging from a mini course in aliens to biomedical engineering), therefore it gives students the opportunity to explore different fields and find what is most interesting to them.
Clubs and Activities There are countless amounts of clubs and different activities organized by them that the diag (the main area on campus) is always flooded with people attending different presentations by these clubs and taking part in their activities.
Greek Life I am not a part of greek life, however from what I hear from my friends, although it is quite a time consuming process, it is worth every second and that it's a great way to build life long friendships.
Campus Safety Campus safety is something Michigan takes pride in. There are safe rides available for people who are up late studying at the library or for other reasons that come pick you up from wherever you are and deliver you home free of charge. There are greek life police officers, department of public safety officers, and Ann Arbor police officers constantly patrolling the area and if ever there should be a crime, crime alerts are sent out to every student on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Michigan is a lovely school with an incredible support system. There is a diverse student group and countless ways to explore interests in and out of your major. It does tend to have a rigorous academic focus, but the professors are wonderful at what they do, and will encourage and aid their students whenever possible.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to have an idea of what you want to do before pursuing a specific course of study. If you don't know specifically, look into all the options available at Michigan before making a decision. While it is somewhat simple to change colleges within the University, it is better to keep your options open before you close doors on yourself.
Academic Rigor Michigan is incredibly focused on academics and that is reflected in the course work. While classes are not easy to do well in without putting an adequate effort, if a student tries, and seeks out resources, they will be met with a well earned success. The professors are generally incredible and helpful, and the students are a resource in themselves. UM encourages collaboration among student's and peers often become just as much of a resource as the professors themselves.
Dorm Life The majority of the dorms are gorgeous and very well kept. Student are encouraged to socialize with their hall mates through various activities planned by their Resident Advisers as well as the housing board itself.
Food and Dining The dining halls are surprisingly impressive. They have a variety of options, including vegetarian/vegan and kosher. They are staffed by a majority of students, and have decent hours. Various cafes and restaurants are also available on campus.
What to do for fun There are thousands of different activities and clubs for students to join to explore interests, meet people, and serve the community. From Relay for Life to the Quidditch team, anyone can find something to do to spend their free time.
Bang for the buck While it does have a tuition bill on the higher end, there are several different resources to look towards for help on the bill.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Don't step on the M in the diag whatever you do! If you do step on it, you will fail your next blue book exam.
Great for these types of students Students looking for a school that encourages both social activities as well as a World-Class education.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I really enjoy interacting with people. During my first year at the University of Michigan, I was able to meet a broad range of students and faculty, and choose from an abundance of activities with which to become involved. It was easy to find my niche at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor).
Tips for prospective students Try new clubs and activities until you find something you love. Take advantage of the unique opportunities offered to students by attending the University's free competitions, information sessions, and guest speaker presentations. While you are exploring the world and finding yourself, don't forget to work on your studies. And turn to other students, office hours, and free tutoring to stay at the top of your class.
Academic Rigor The first year classes range from medium to difficult in terms of their rigor. It all depends on how you did in pre-requisite classes in high school and on how much time you dedicate to your studies.
Dorm Life The dorms are in fairly good condition. Living in the dorms your first or second year is a great way to transition to living away from home, make lasting friends, and have access to help with schoolwork and entertainment.
Food and Dining For most meals, you swipe your card to get into one of several dining halls on campus. It's an all-you-can-eat deal. There is always a wide variety of meal options from which to choose. The produce is typically fresh.
What to do for fun See student organization performances, go to the Michigan Theater, visit a museum, shop at the mall, explore Ann Arbor, dine on Main Street, join a intramural sports team, hang with friends, go to U of M sports games, or make your own fun.
Bang for the buck The education and resources are great, but the tuition and housing adds up over four years. Definitely too expensive for most out students living outside of Michigan. Remember to apply for scholarships!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Football Saturdays in the fall are great fun. The whole town is pumped for the game.
Great for these types of students University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) is great for students who are looking for a big schools, tons of students to meet, or big campuses to explore. Also, Ann Arbor as a town provides many unique cultural and entertainment opportunities.
Clubs and Activities U of M has more student organizations than most colleges, and it is extremely easy to start a new club. There are groups for just about every sport, arts activity, professional society, academic interest, or community service.
Greek Life I don't know much about Greek Life, but I know there are many fraternities and sororities from which to choose. Greek life isn't right for everyone, but there are definitely opportunities at U of M to try Greek Life.
Campus Safety There are the usual small crimes, the ones you will find in any town or college, but you are generally safe. If you need to walk home alone from the library at three in the morning, you can call Safe Ride and they will take you back to your dorm or house for free.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Quite possibly one of the most well-rounded schools a person could find. Amazing academics, fascinating athletics, and a school spirit that you must experience to understand its greatness. Everything you could ask for in a college, bundled-up into one of the greatest college towns that is not only quaint, but also energetic and always entertaining.
Tips for prospective students Don't be intimidated by the size of UofM...Try to find your own niche of people early on who share similar interests as you, and immediately, UofM will feel like the most close-knit and friendly of any campuses. Get involved...it's easy to just slide though in Michigan, but realize what great opportunities you have there and really take advantage of them.
Academic Rigor You get out what you put in. If you chose easy classes, you will breeze through UofM but won't get anything in return. On the other hand, there are a multitude of classes and every subject you can think of that offer students a challenge and elevate their knowledge to a new level.
Dorm Life I personally was lucky enough to live in Markley my freshman year. Some could say this is a curse, but it was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had. In fact, I wish I could do it again next year. There are a ton of activities set up within the dorms - both social and academic based. I personally was never involved with any of them, but they are definitely present. Be social with people in your own dorms, it makes the experience much more fun.
UofM doesn't have the best dorms, but this is not as nearly important as you think it is before you enter college. Also, in the past few years they have been doing extreme renovations to many of the dorms, so soon they will all be up-to-date and modern.Food and Dining Some love it, some hate it. Not the greatest selections, but the food isn't bad. Explore the different dining halls across campus and you'll be sure to find your favorite. North Quad is GREAT, except finding a seat during lunch is always quite a process...
What to do for fun Football Saturdays in the fall are a MUST. Main Street is a few blocks away from Central Campus but has great restaurants and is fun for something different to do. Party scene is definitely present...always stuff going on during the weeks and the weekends. State street has a few good stores for shopping.
Bang for the buck In-State: REDICULOUSLY worth it. Out-of-State: sometimes hard to justify, only because you know that over half of the students there are paying a WHOLE LOT LESS than what out-of-state kids pay, but at the end of the day it's one of the greatest academic institutions and is completely worth it
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The DIAG, can't walk through this central part of campus without seeing some rediculous site, be it people feeding squirrels or walking on tight-ropes. The Rock, painting it before you graduate is a MUST, it's really not that entertaining, but just so that you can say you did it.
Great for these types of students Every type...
Greek Life Very present if you are a part of it, not as present if you aren't. Some people think that the Greeks are obnoxious and have a mentality that they run stuff, but at the end of the day, if you ignore them, they fade into the background. Greek Life isn't large enough to completely dominate...that is unless it's Football Saturday, a study sesh in the Ref Room, or a night out at Skeeps. For what it's worth, everyone in Greek Life tends to congregate together in the same areas so it's pretty easy to avoid them.
Campus Safety Despite the gazillion safety alert emails that students wake up to after every weekend night out, the campus feels very safe.

Tips for prospective students Try to join as many clubs are you can your freshmen year. Take advantage of any opportunities you can come across. And don't take too many rigorous classes your first semester!
Academic Rigor A LOT OF HOMEWORK, HARD EXAMS! Be prepared to work hard if you want to get an A!
Dorm Life Great dorm life if you live in Markley. Not so much if you live in Oxford.
Food and Dining We have some of the best food here, especially at Mojo or South Quad. Umich cookies are some of the best!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences There is no doubt that any other college compares to the University of Michigan. Ranked 12 in the world for top colleges, Michigan is home to the Leaders and Best. From their academics to Division One sports there is a place for everyone.
Tips for prospective students My biggest tip for prospective students is to get involved. At a campus with close to 24,000 undergraduates there are many chances to get involved and make new friends. Sometimes at such a big college it is hard to feel like you can make your mark so becoming involved in smaller groups like an intermural sports team, church, or other activities can really help to make a big campus feel smaller. Being involved in other activities also gives you the opportunity to learn to balance activities and school and make you a more well rounded individual.
Academic Rigor Michigan is not ranked 12th in the world for nothing. All of the schools within the University of Michigan are ranked highly so there is an expectation to reach no matter what program/major you choose to join. As long as you are a motivated student who can balance their time, Michigan is the place for you. You will be challenged, but that challenge will cause you to become a better student than you thought was possible. The work load is not impossible and if you put in the time, your grades will reflect that.
Dorm Life The dorms are great and I would highly recommend staying in the dorms as long as possible. The community atmosphere that is created there can be a place to meet your best friends. The dorms are also a great place to study and collaborate with others around you so you can be exposed to more than just your major.
Food and Dining Overall I think the dining halls are great. Now yes it's not 5-star quality, but it is also a college dining hall: its not your mom's cooking. The food id good though and there is always a variety offered and certain dining halls specialize in something like vegetarian food, cultural food, or make your own pizza area. There are many dining halls on campus too so it is easy to mix it up and try new things, or stick with your favorites.
What to do for fun There is a lot to do on campus for fun. There are always fun events with free food at the Union, open ice skating at Yost Arena, and there is always sports. At a school with Division One sports there is always a sporting event to go to and cheer on your Wolverines. If sports are not your thing there are a lot of clubs to join like acapella choirs, dance teams, and much much more. There are also events put on by the dorms that are great ways to meet people, get free food, and have fun.
Bang for the buck I am an out-of-state student so it was definitely a big decision to go to Michigan because of the cost, but it was worth it. The networking that you get by being a Wolverine is so vast and the opportunities are endless if you put in the effort. I would not change my decision for anything because the professors are great and can help you if you choose to let them, like with networking and getting ahead in your career.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One tradition deals with the fountain in front of the Rackham Graduate building. As an incoming freshman you walk through the fountain walking away from the graduate building and towards the Diag to signify you are starting college. Then when you graduate you walk through the fountain towards the Rackham Graduate building because you may be going into graduate school or the real world.
Great for these types of students Michigan is greta for students who like to be challenged and who are motivated not only in their academics, but in life.
Clubs and Activities There are endless amounts of clubs and activities to get involved with so don't hesitate! It will really help to make campus feel smaller and give you a place you belong. The people will also share the same values or likes so you can make life-long friends.
Greek Life Greek life if only about 15 percent of the campus so if it's not your thing you won't feel pressured into it.
Campus Safety I have always felt safe on campus. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is always on duty and keeping us students safe. There are also blue lights with phones everywhere if you were ever to feel unsafe.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences U of M has it all, whether you're looking for sports, clubs, jobs, shopping, or academics. If you throw a dart at a list of its academic departments, you'll always hit one of the top departments in the world in that field. It's hard work a lot of the time, and you're going to have to learn a lot to get through, but that's the point of college.
Tips for prospective students Visit campus in the fall or spring for a good sense of Ann Arbor at its finest.
Academic Rigor Michigan was recently listed as one of three top universities in the country for its academic atmosphere. You need to do work to keep up, but that's because people at Michigan aren't just trying to get by. We're a research university and proud of it. This also means that once you find your passion, the possibilities are endless. One of my friends is a psych major, and in her freshman year she signed up for UROP (Undergrad Research Opportunity Program) and got to work in a psych lab researching The N-Effect with the Umich professor who discovered it. Again, she was a freshman. If you're not totally sure what your passion is, don't worry. There are lots of interesting classes to take here, and you can just take classes that sound cool for the first two or three terms and still graduate on time.
Dorm Life I don't remember being forced into any silly Meet Your Hall games led by my R.A. during the first few weeks of school. If they happened, I must have missed them. Still, everyone in my hall was friendly enough and within a week we all knew each other pretty well. It's all pretty standard. If you get stuck living on North Campus, you'll have to take a bus to get to classes, but the dorms themselves are fine there, too.
Food and Dining The dorm food tastes like dorm food, but that's to be expected. It's not awful, and for the first few months you'll actually enjoy it. Fortunately, restaurants line the streets of Ann Arbor and it's easy to go out to eat whenever you want.
What to do for fun Ann Arbor is a thriving town even aside from U of M, so there are all sorts of stores in easy walking distance. Restaurants abound, but there's also nightclubs, frat houses, a comic book store, and Pinball Pete's arcade (a must-see).
Bang for the buck Nothing beats in-state tuition here. Out-of-state is quite a bit more expensive, but it's a pretty typical markup for a public university. I think it's the most expensive public school in the state, but it's not too much more expensive, and you definitely get your money's worth.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have a squirrel-feeding club. As a result, we also have the fattest squirrels I have ever seen in my life.
Great for these types of students Quite honestly, the leaders and best.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs on campus that time is the limiting factor in how much you can do.
Greek Life We got 'em, like everybody. Some people join them, some people don't. Whichever is to your liking. The frat parties, while numerous, are actually kind of lame in Ann Arbor. Of course, I've never been to a frat party anywhere else, so I might just not like frat parties.
Campus Safety We get a text message every time someone reports a crime on campus. I don't think I've gotten a text message in a month or more. We've got poles all around campus that give you instant communication to the police.

Dorm Life Not living in the dorm
Food and Dining Have not yet eaten on campus

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The place is great. My first term was a bit rough, coming from an international background, but once I got settled in, things were great. As a freshman, I have had an amazing experience here, and wouldn't trade it for the world.
Tips for prospective students Don't take no for an answer! As a freshman, I pushed my way into being admitted to study at the University of Oxford for an entire year, despite people telling me I was too young or didn't meet requirements. So keep at it, and things will come your way!
Academic Rigor If you want to be challenged here, you will. This is a place to learn and beome great at your subject.
Dorm Life The dorm life is absolutely fantastic once you get settled in. It was a bit upsetting that nearly everyone I live with is from Michigan, but after I got to know them, they became the best of friends.
Food and Dining For cafeteria food, this stuff is actually pretty good.
What to do for fun I like to go downtown to one of the hundreds of amazing restaurants in the Ann Arbor area, or go see a film at the old school movie theatre. There really is so much to do here.
Bang for the buck Let's be honest here, if you are out of state, this place is expensive! But don't be intimidated, because they are pretty generous with financial aid for those in need.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Nichols Arboretum is awesome. It is a giant park just near where I live that you can go for a jog in, or just chill out at.
Clubs and Activities If there is something you want to do, I guarantee there's a club for it. Then again, I was never one for the club scene, but there is definitely a plethora of activities for those willing to find them.
Greek Life There's a lot of it. Take that as good or bad, but know that when you come to Michigan, frats and sororities are a big thing here. Then again, I am not a member, and I'm doing just fine!
Campus Safety Michigan makes a huge effort to keep everyone safe on campus. Many safety features, such as blue light, and DPS are all there for our protection, and it works great!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Admission to the University of Michigan is definitely an honor to any high school senior. Attending the University of Michigan is beneficial for you life ahead. The education here is preparatory for the work field, and it strengthens your liberal understanding of the world. Being a Wolverine helps you learn and grow as a student.
Tips for prospective students Get ready to read. You will definitely do it a lot at Michigan. Reading comprehension is a must and being able to understand a text will help you get through studying, homework, and exams so that you won't spend so much time.
One obvious thing to strive for when applying to Michigan is a high GPA and a good ACT/SAT score along with extra-curricular activities. Especially extra-curricular activities. The Admissions Office want to see if you are involved outside of the class other than just getting good grades. This shows that you are hard working and flexible with other things than just your studies. :DAcademic Rigor You cannot escape the challenge in academics at the University of Michigan. The university prepares us for the future, so extra focus on your studies should be must. Some helpful tips, Mathematics is difficult so prepare outside of class with questions that may be on the exam. Taking notes in class and doing Webwork is not enough to get an A in the class. Think of practice makes perfect, if you will. :)
Dorm Life Dorm Life is awesome here at Michigan. There are over 10 residence halls at the university and every residence hall has awesome events and resources available for their inhabitants. You won't find yourself bored in the residence halls, unless you lock yourself in your room.
Food and Dining Because of its promotion for diversity, you can find all sorts of food from around the world in the dining halls. In addition, the staff works to meet the needs of all the students. They make Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-Free, and other healthy styles of food. You won't go hungry in the dining halls.
What to do for fun There are many things you can do for fun. The best way to have fun is to explore with friends.
Clubs and Activities There are over 200 clubs and activities to participate in at the University of Michigan. It would be sad if you didn't join one. There is a wide variety of clubs and activities that you are bound to find the right one for you.
Greek Life Greek Life at the University of Michigan is definitely something to be involved in. If you like to participate in community service, want to join others in similar academic interests, or want to build brotherhood/sisterhood that will last after college, join a fraternity or sorority. Involvement at the University of Michigan may seem big, but only 17% of students are involved with Greek Life. However, Greek Life is a wonderful addition to the University of Michigan.
Campus Safety At the University of Michigan, we have an awesome department called the Department of Public Safety (DPS for short). They report crimes/alerts via e-mail and are on guard daily on campus and in residence halls. You are sure to be safe with DPS around.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Michigan is a world full of opportunity. The Residential College, in particular, has encouraged hard, detail-oriented work and has helped me become fluent in a language. After one year, I already feel incredibly prepared to tackle my dreams.
Tips for prospective students Don't blow off your first year. If you plan careful and keep a good head on your shoulders, you can take advantage of so much here.
Academic Rigor Curriculums here can be as easy or as hard as you would like tem to be. I currently take a more rigorous schedule than my friend at Harvard. I promise, it is most definitely worth it. If you find the right ones, our professors are incredible and really help push you into your dream field.
Dorm Life Students here know how to have fun! We study hard during the day, and then out come the banjos, stereos, and crazy costumes at night. Truly a cultural experience!
Food and Dining The cafeteria food here is much better than at other schools. East Quad, my favourite, has a lot of organic options. It is very easy for me to make a gourmet-looking sandwich or salad here.
What to do for fun We can go to the arb, a huge forest and park, to play frisbee or dip our toes into the Huron River; we can sit in one of the many cafes and eat yummy pastries while people watching; we have Zingermann's and Blimpy Burger, the Ann Arbor specials (!!); Saturdays are reserved for FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences michigan forces you to learn to manage your time, to be focused, and to work hard. although it has been a lot of fun, being successful academically is something that will require hard work and serious effort. everyone around is just as smart, if not smarter, and oftentimes it seems like they don't have to work as hard as you do.
Tips for prospective students prepare yourself to work hard. michigan is a big school and you can get lost in it.make sure you get involved in something you love to do.
Academic Rigor michigan academics will challenge you if you pick the right courses. there are always easy classes, but most of them require some amount of work. it is not easy to do well at michigan in engineering, or any of the sciences. it's not even always easy for the other liberal arts.
Dorm Life dorm life depends on where you live. but the people you meet in your hallway can be the people that you end up hanging out with a lot. it's a lot of fun, but not really the best place to study.
Food and Dining the dining halls aren't really that great, but it's decent food. there are good days in the d-hall and there are bad ones. north quad is by far the best dining hall, but make sure you beat the lunchtime and dinner time rush there. fortunately ann arbor has many great restaurants at all different price ranges.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences despite its humongous size, it's a school where you can find who you are and how you can help the world out a bit. it's full of fascinating people, opportunities that never stop appearing, incredible athletic teams, awesome housing conditions that allow you to meet people from around the world, and the capability to be whoever you want to be. plus, ann arbor is a true college town, a perfect place to start your life in.
Tips for prospective students apply for scholarships starting your junior year of high school. you can never spend too much time applying for financial aid, and every little bit helps. don't be concerned if you don't know what you want to go into. i consider michigan the perfect place to come to if you don't know what you want to go into because every single program here is great, and even if you think you know what you want to do, it's great to have flexibility. finally, be open when you come here. don't limit yourself and the people you can meet.
Academic Rigor you can't procrastinate anymore, and don't even try to cram before exams. it might work a few times, but the hundred other times it won't. in order to be successful here academically, you have to make sure you're managing your time well while also making sure you don't go insane while studying by giving yourself enough break time.
Dorm Life an organization called planet blue is going through one dorm each year and renovating it, so now is the perfect time to come to u of m. each dorm offers a different experience. south quad and west quad for example have a huge snowball fight in the winter in the wee hours of the morning and house a lot of athletes. other dorms have living learning communities that allow you to live with people that share similar interests to you. people keep their doors open most of the time, which allows you to meet some really amazing people from around the world. there's plenty of space in your room, although some dorms offer more room than others.
Food and Dining you never go full. all-you-can-eat is amazing. you don't have to worry about cooking your food, and you can have literally everything you want right in front of your eyes. u of m's chefs are actually professionals and they offer a chance every year for students to have an iron chef competition in the kitchens of select dorms. it's ridiculously cool! plus, each cafeteria has its own spin to it. east quad offers vegan and vegetarian options, mojo has a stir fry and burger bar, and north quad is like a fancy french restaurant. also, throughout the year they offer special meals, like bread day, rib competitions between the chefs, international food days, and holiday meals (thanksgiving...oh man!). plus, if you're sick you can have food either to-go or delivered to your room for free.
What to do for fun i can't list everything because it wouldn't ever end. football games, basketball games, hockey games, water polo games, frisbee, feeding squirrels, climbing trees, slip 'n' slides in the dorms, ultimate frisbee, grabbing coffee, seeing movies downtown, capture the flag in the diag, parties, random late night events, rollerblading, biking, over 1300 student groups from the michigan zombie club to the michigan planking club, climbing buildings, etc. the list can go on and on.
Bang for the buck it might cost a lot, but you are never, ever bored. ever. it literally takes 5 seconds to find what to do on the weekend if you don't know what to do because there's always something to do. it is challenging, no doubt. but the amount you learn and the experiences you have are worth so much more than what money can buy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the m on the diag...there's a myth that if you step on it you will fail your first blue-book exam. the only way to reverse the curse is to streak from one of the libraries to one of the museums and kiss one of the metal pumas there at the stroke of midnight. michigan state rivalry...when state comes to town for football a fraternity defends the m all week. snowball fights...they take place outside the dorms all over campus, ranging from 5 students to 1,000 students each. the zombie walk...the michigan zombie club walks around like zombies and gets donations for people who don't have food. midnight movies at state theater...self-explanatory, and awesome. football saturdays...you just have to be here. and many, many more!
Great for these types of students everyone! seriously, everyone. no, i'm not being cliche, seriously, if you are a student at all or even if you want to be a student, u of m is perfect for you.
Clubs and Activities over 1300 student groups. enough said. there is always something to do here. oh, and yeah we have a squirrel club with like 900 members that feed squirrels every sunday with peanuts.
Greek Life it's definitely present on campus. 17% of students are involved in greek life. there are some really cool fraternities and sororities across campus, and the outside of their houses look cool. one fraternity does a mud bowl every year before the ohio state football game. greek life also raises a lot of money for charities.
Campus Safety libraries are open very late, so michigan makes sure you're gonna be safe. they offer free safe walks back to your house and taxi rides back to your house. the campus is extremely well-lit at night. there are blue light kiosks around campus where you can phone campus police if you think you're in an emergency. we have a sexual assault prevention and awareness center (sapac). and we have a campus police force as well as the ann arbor police force.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the university of michigan has a rigorous curriculum that gives a student a challenging education that really makes them work hard and appreciate the education they are receiving. not only is academics strong, there are a great number of extracurricular activities that will cater to your strengths and passions. getting the college experience at u of m is excellent because it is an all around school.
Tips for prospective students be prepared to work hard. even if you think you are taking an easy class, be prepared to do work for it. this is not like high school where you can easily breeze through without putting in much effort. this is preparing you for the real world, so make the most of the experience and classes.
Academic Rigor classes are somewhat difficult because they really require you to pay attention and do all the work they give you. professors, however, are very helpful and open to working with you to help you understand everything.
Dorm Life i love my dorm life. be sure to get to know your hallmates because they make living in a dorm much better! it is a great way to make new friends that can last a lifetime.
Food and Dining the best dining halls are north quad and mojo, by far. the others are not too bad, they have a good variety for food, but the most gourmet food you will get will be at north quad or mojo.
What to do for fun joining clubs and meeting people with similar interests as you is a great way to have fun. the night life with parties is also excellent. greek life is full of fun and learning experiences. hanging out with friends is fun as well, just walking around downtown ann arbor.

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students don't wait until the day it's due to do it ... it won't fly.
Academic Rigor classes are hard, but they are interesting for the most part. here at u of m you can either sleep, have a social life, and fail or sleep, work hard academically, and have no social life, or be like me and just never sleep.
Dorm Life my experience has been great! there are many different types of dorms that you can have. i have to share my bathroom with 20 other girls which kind of stinks. but it's a great way to meet people!
Food and Dining it really depends where you're at. the system is separated into 3 different ways of eating: blue bucks (money for actual restaurants like subway), dining dollars (restaurants in the dorms with all your frozen meal, yogurt needs), and then the meals for the dining halls. i recommend you go to mojo for the most options, but steer clear of east quad unless you're a vegan.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus don't walk on the m in the middle of the diag before your first blue book exam or you will fail it.
Clubs and Activities there are soo many clubs and activities to join. make sure you go out for festifall and see all the things you can do. they range from recreational and club sports to academic ones like the electric car clu or the squirrel watching club.
Greek Life you can be your stereotypical frat or sorority girl, but there are other options in the forms of professional fraternities and other ones that aren't like what you see on tv and in the movies.
Campus Safety recently there were some attacks on campus, but there is police everywhere and options to have someone walk you home at night if you feel uncomfortable, as well as, spots to call the police if you feel endangered. also, the campus police contacts the whole student body within 24 hours about any incident that has occured

Categories Rating Comments Tips for prospective students u of m is expensive. if you are not from a well-off family, get as many scholarships as you can. oh, and merit scholarships are extremely difficult to get. you need a 4.2 gpa and 10 extracurriculars. i kid you not.
Academic Rigor time-consuming but not terribly difficult. depending on the classes you take, you could be swamped with readings and projects, but they aren't particularly difficult in themselves.
Dorm Life i currently do not live in a dorm, so i'm not the best source here, but i have many friends that do and i vistit them often. the rooms and dorm scene are decent and most halls get along pretty well. even if you get stuck on north campus, central campus is just a short bus ride away. the buses run frequently, so if you are late to class, it will only be 5 minutes or less.
Food and Dining the food in the dining halls is usually alright, neither good nor bad, but occasionally they will have a good day and put out a variety of very good dishes (like salmon chowder). the selection is pretty wide and you can easily find vegetarian options, though vegan options are rather limited as far as i can tell. if you have an allergy question, you can probably ask one of the many staff members about the ingredients.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences u of m is a great school to attend. knowing the professors, advisers, and other students make it feel like a smaller college, and there are so many resources to utilize. ann arbor is a great town with so much to offer.
Tips for prospective students don't rule out bigger colleges because of size, many offer residence programs and clubs that make you feel like part of a community within the school.
Academic Rigor be prepared to work hard, but the benefits make it all worthwhile.
Dorm Life the people in your dorm will become your friends and study partners. don't be afraid to ask others to hang out or go someplace, many students are just as shy and need a little push to meet new people.
Food and Dining the dorm food is good, everyday there are new options and u of m has many mhealthy options for students who watch what they eat.
What to do for fun intramural sports, going to the state theater for a $6 midnight movie, going a club, exploring the arb, there is so much to do you will have trouble deciding what you have time for.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences the university of michigan is a great choice for any student because it has something for everything. living on north campus is a quiet, peaceful environment, while central campus is a college town. the alumni association is huge and strong, the school is well-known, the student body is involved, clubs are diverse, and though it may be a big school the spirit makes it feel small.
Tips for prospective students study hard, but don't forget to live your life by joining clubs and becoming involved.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences It's a great place for all kinds of educational goals. It does not only offer education, but a variety of student clubs, groups, and organizations. The city of Ann Arbor is also a great city to live in, very interesting and campus feels like a small town within a large city.
Tips for prospective students If you're considering any sort of degree in language or english, come to the Residential College.
Academic Rigor It's a lot of hard work, but if you commit yourself, it's worth it.
Dorm Life I like living in the dorms, they're not really any better or worse than you'd expect them to be.
Food and Dining They have cafeterias that are known for being very big, some that are known for having a wide variety of good food, and some that are known for their vegetarian/vegan options.
What to do for fun There's a bunch of stores and restaurants, as well as movie theaters, clubs, and parties.
Bang for the buck There's a lot of really great resources here, but also some basic ones that could use a little expansion like the free printer paper limit and wireless.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The State theatre has midnight showings of very well known or classic movies, it's very fun.
Clubs and Activities A club for anything you could want to do and more.
Greek Life I hear it's really good, but it's not something that I looked into.
Campus Safety We get notified of incidents, the dorms are very safe (you have to swipe your card to get into the building and then swipe a different card to get into your room). However, it's not a city you want to go wandering around alone at night in.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences Michigan is a great school where you will get a top-rate education. I am very happy with my decision to attend, which was made because of the Michigan engineering reputation, and because it is in-state. There is lots to do here, the people are friendly, and the town is great.
Tips for prospective students Apply early. I liked finding out my decision by Christmas time and then having the whole winter/spring to make my college decision. Take as many AP classes as you can! I didn't take as many as I wish I had. You can get college credit for them, and plus you get out of those annoying 100-level intro classes so you can get on to what you enjoy taking. I also recommend getting into the earliest orientation you can, so you can get all the classes you want and your schedule won't be messed up. They say they save spots in classes for the later orientation times, but I don't trust that. Another tip, don't stress out too much over applications and scholarships! It's not worth it. Sure, you need to put time and effort into it, but in the end, a college degree is a college degree, and it matters only a little where you get it from. You're doing no one a favor by getting worked up about it. Just relax, and knock it out.
Academic Rigor There's a reason it's called the Harvard of the midwest. Michigan consistently ranks among the top schools in the country for almost every field of study. Professors are extremely knowledgeable, and often at the top of their respective fields. You will receive a top-rate education from Michigan, but you have to work hard for it.
Dorm Life I cannot speak for all on this one, as I lived in Baits, which is far away on north campus. It is a five minute walk to Bursley to eat, the buildings are old, and people mostly stick to themselves. That being said, I enjoy the suite-style room that I have and I have become very close with some of my hallmates. Michigan is very progressive in that they renovate a dorm every few years or so, keeping them updated and livable.
Food and Dining Dorm food at Michigan is nothing to write home about, but as far as dorm food goes, it's pretty good. North Quad has the most AMAZING food ever, and is legitimately like a fancy restaurant. Mojo and Bursley offer more options, which is nice. Constant options for sandwich bar and grill items (burgers, hot dogs) help make eating in the dorms bearable. Convenience shops in the dorms such as Victors and Blue Apple serve excellent pizza, smoothies and sandwiches, great for late night snacks or any time really.
What to do for fun Lots to do for fun! Michigan has a good partying scene, if you're into that. Greek Life is fun, and the occasional block parties are crazy. If partying isn't your thing, there are university sponsored mixers on Fridays that include different things every time, like games, bands, food, etc. The city of Ann Arbor is a wonderful town with many cool shops to peruse, and many great restaurants ranging from the more pricey ones on Main Street to cheaper, but still tasty ones on State Street and south University. Ann Arbor is very progressive and liberal, and there are many theatre, dance, and music opportunities around the area. Concerts often come to Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti (ten minutes away), and those are always fun. I saw a Chiddy Bang concert and it was awesome. Finally, for nature people, I have explored Nichols Arboretum and it was tons of fun. North campus has wildlife like turkeys and deer and raccoons, it's actually kind of funny. Rec sports offers nature programs such as alternative spring breaks, free rental equipment, and canoeing trips down the Huron River. Whatever you like to do for fun, it's probably here.
Bang for the buck Michigan just raised their tuition by about 9%, and has the top public tuition rate in the state, if I'm not mistaken. It's quite expensive to go here. However, they do give a lot of scholarship money to people who qualify. Being among the top 5 or 10 endowed colleges in the nation, U of M has a LOT of money to spend on scholarships. Even though it is expensive, there is a lot to be said about having a Michigan degree. I would say it is worth it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Nichols Arboretum (The Arb) is a popular place to go for a run or to hang out and clear your head. The Safe Sex Store on South University is a classic store. Ann Arbor is well-known for Zingerman's deli, which has excellent sandwiches and other delightful treats. Legend has it that if you kiss someone under the arch between east hall and west hall by south university and the diag at midnight, you will marry them. Also, we have a hash bash in April that is one of the biggest. Not endorsing that, just saying, it's there and it's unusual.
Great for these types of students Students who are willing to work hard and want a top notch degree. If you want the feel of a big time university, Michigan is excellent. If you want a smaller school, probably go elsewhere. That being said, you can always make a big school small, but you can't make a small school big. Michigan has the advantages of a big school: top sports programs, excellent research opportunities, many student groups, and lots of options, while its still possible and quite easy to shrink the size of the school by joining clubs, making connections with your professors and being active about meeting the people in your residence hall.
Clubs and Activities One of the HUGE benefits of being at such a big school. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of clubs to join. And if you don't like any of them, get a few friends and make one! Intramural sports is very organized and lots of fun, and there exists a club for pretty much anything you can think of. From squirrel feeding and quidditch to more normal things, like religious groups and drama clubs.
Greek Life I am not involved in Greek Life, but I know it is vibrant here at Michigan, we have many fraternities and sororities, both social and professional.
Campus Safety The campus is generally safe. I do get crime alerts every so often about crimes happening around campus. Campus police often patrol the dorms to check on everything. Many safe ride programs exist to take you home if you're out late at night.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot In my program, we employ professors from who have been worked for varied and prestigious companies across the country. Each professor instructs with a different perspective and a unique set of experiences, all of which they pull from when imparting their wisdom to their students. I have appreciated this diversity throughout my academic career at Michigan because it has given me ample opportunity to glean a myriad of skills, techniques and philosophies from professionals in my projected career field.
Am enjoying being here My program is quite small and I have enjoyed being a part of this community as I feel I have found my niche on this circa 42,000 student campus. I spend most my time with these peers, individuals I have created deep and meaningful relationships with which grow deeper every day as we study, create, laugh and reflect with one another.
Bang for the buck The prospect of a tuition bill that spans the length and breadth of four years may seem daunting but I have been able to pay for my education with the support of scholarships and grants from the University of Michigan, the Michigan Government as well as private donors. In addition, I applied for and received two summer international internship grants which allowed me to travel to Ireland and London for two consecutive summers. These were excellent opportunities to employ the skills and techniques that I acquired through coursework at Michigan in addition to gleaning different perspectives and philosophies from the individuals I worked alongside. I have been blessed to receive such a world-class education for such an unbelievably low price.
Tips for prospective students I have two very different yet equally important individuals on campus that I look to for not only academic and career advice. I believe it is very important to find a mentor or advisor on campus, preferably an individual in your chosen field, with whom one can go to for guidance and encouragement. These advisors have supported me throughout my academic career at Michigan and have become life-long friends in the process.
Great for these types of students The University of Michigan is a wonderful place for someone who enjoys being around many different types of people and personalities and who can embrace exciting and new situations. It also hosts thousands of resources which are best utilized by independent students who think outside the box. I often find myself wishing that I could spend an entire lifetime at this university due to its excellent support of research and learning. After graduation, I plan to contribute to our shared world by utilizing the tools I have gained through my undergraduate career at the University of Michigan.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Michigan is one of the top, if not the top, academic public university in the nation. In terms of rankings, most departments are ranked in the top 25 overall by most major ranking systems. There are many different opportunities to learn both in the classroom and outside of the classroom with opportunities such as the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), global exchange programs, a Washington D.C. program, and ecology programs at Camp Davis in Wyoming. The professors are all excellent and leaders in their respective fields. Even better, they are willing and eager to meet with you outside of class for help and good talking.
Am enjoying being here Ann Arbor is a great city. Everything is within biking distance. Even during the winter, they do a great job of clearing the roads, so I can still bike. Ann Arbor is full of culture, especially on Main Street. On any given night, you may see street performers, watch a good movie at the theater, or dine at one of the upscale restaurants. There are over 2,000 student organizations on campus. I am involved with pops orchestra, South Quad hall council, research, and AIV Christian Fellowship, and the balance and variety of activities has really helped me enjoy my time here.
Bang for the buck For in-state students, the rate is very good. For out-of-state students, it can get quite expensive, but 70% of students receive financial aid. Also, there are many scholarships, and often times, you don't have to fill out a separate a separate application - you're automatically thrown into the pool.
Tips for prospective students Don't look at UM as a second-tier school. Sure, it's no Ivy League, but it's just as challenging and stimulating. I've had friends who've attended Ivy League schools and UM, and they all say most if not all UM classes and professors are comparable. Whatever you do, don't think that UM is a pushover. But at the same time, embrace all the opportunities. Also, don't bother buying UM swag - you'll find a ton of free stuff on campus, especially during Welcome Week!
Great for these types of students If you love sports, you'll love the athletic spirit here. Nothing is like a game at the Big House with over 100,000 other people in the stadium. If you're more of the studious type, you'll love the variety and caliber of academic opportunities here. Basically, UM is a good place for anyone. But you must be active and proactive, ready to find activities for yourself and dive in!

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I chose to participate in a special program here at U of M called the Residential College. My class sizes are small and the work is intense. If you aren't willing to do a lot of work or can't handle stress then this isn't the school for you; however, if you are ready for the challenge of your life then this is the place to be.
Am enjoying being here Ann Arbor is a great place to be. The U of M campus is built throughout the city and there is always somewhere fun to go eat, study and hang out with friends. The campus security makes me feel safe and the bus system is really easy to use (even if you have never ridden one before.) The go blue community can definitely make a person feel welcomed.
Bang for the buck The cost of tuition is the only thing I don't like about this school. The education is great but my dorm has no air and I really don't understand why classes are so expensive. The prices honestly make no sense to me but in the end a good education is worth it.
Tips for prospective students If you want to come to U of M then it is imperative that you form study habits NOW. If you have good study habits then don't get eager and take a billion credits; start with 16 or less. Also don't be afraid to utilize office hours, they are truly a gift. When buying books first check the resell store; after your done with them sell them back. Finally, in the midst of studying make sure you take breaks from time to time, join a club, be active. Being a well rounded student is important before and after college admission.
Great for these types of students This school is great for hard working, well rounded students that like to be exposed to different ideas and ways of life.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot There are so many different classes to choose from and you learn so much from every teacher. Awesome.
Am enjoying being here Ann Arbor is literally the best college town ever. Nuff said.
Bang for the buck Michigan is very expensive for out-of-staters like me, but for in-staters - the price is good.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot I've heard only good things about the professors and graduate student instructors (GSIs) at U-M. During the honors lunch at my orientation, one of the professors said that every faculty member at the university was hired because they are a leading researcher in their field. I'm expecting all of the instructors to be very passionate and knowledgeable; the only limit on how much I learn from them should be the effort that I'm willing to put into my education.
Will enjoy being here There's a ton of things to do in Ann Arbor. I don't think I'll be bored very often.
Bang for the buck It's an expensive school, but it's definitely worth it. Not only does it have a great reputation, there are also many programs available to help students succeed academically.
Tips for prospective students Apply early. The longer you wait, the more competitive the admissions process becomes.
If you're applying to the LSA Honors Program, try to write a good essay, but if it's late April and you still haven't submitted your application, just get something in before they fill up.Great for these types of students This school is great for smart students who are looking for a challenge.

Categories Rating Comments Bang for the buck U of M is expensive, and they don't give out many scholarships. However, it's one of the best schools in the world, and definitely worth the money. Make sure to apply for private scholarships!
Tips for prospective students U of M has everything you can think of, from the Squirrel Club and the Zombie Club to IM sports and religious groups. Get involved and college will be easy and fun. There is a place for everyone.
Great for these types of students ANYBODY!

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot This university has SO many different kinds of classes. They encourage trying new things, especially the ones that you never knew could be a class, but sound interesting. I expect to learn a lot, and to enjoy doing it. UM has every kind of class imaginable.
Will enjoy being here There are Living and Learning Communities for everyone. You live with these people, do activities with them, and in my case, even take specialized courses aimed at improving your work in a particular area. Not to mention, Ann Arbor has hundreds of fantastic restaurants, and thousands of student activities daily. I really want to watch their Quidditch team in action!
Bang for the buck UM is expensive, but I think it's worth it. College is about more than just your education (and they provide a top-notch education to boot), it's also about discovering who you are and deciding who and what you want to be. It's about enjoying yourself in the process. UM is guaranteed to give you all of that.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Your college experience is half the college you attend and half what you do with it. Michigan is a place of opportunity and it is my belief that most anyone could find a program, a department, or an area of study that suits their needs. Michigan has challenged me to continue to learn.
Bang for the buck For in-state students, the University of Michigan is certainly the best value I could imagine for undergraduate studies. As an in-state student myself, I cannot imagine getting more from my university for the price than I do with Michigan.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of opportunity! Michigan and Ann Arbor has so much to offer. Don't wait until your senior year to explore. Go to the free student comedy and acapella shows, go to the museums, and check out Kerrytown. Take advantage of the four years you have and I guarantee you will have the fondest of memories.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The University of Michigan is a great university. Coming here was a great choice for me because the school is a place where you can be yourself without judgement. The minute you arrive on campus, people are super friendly. For some it may take a while to get used to the work and for others it'll be a quick adjustment. But, no matter if you are doing well or struggling, there are always professors, grad student instructors, and/or advisors ready to help you with whatever problems you may have.
Am enjoying being here It is awesome to be able to walk around campus and know that there is usually something going on. There's fun just hanging in a friends dorm room, chilling in the lounges or libraries (which depending on where you are, are actually quite social), or just walking around to different stores and restaurants. Also, the buses are free so there's no worries on paying for transportation to the mall (unless you want to go at a time that doesn't go with the bus schedules) or around campus. Nothing is dull unless you make it dull.
Bang for the buck Even though the school is expensive, the financial aid packages are usually helpful in reducing the price by a big chunk.
Tips for prospective students Get involved, get involved, get involved! Activities like clubs, sororities/fraternities (professional or not), and volunteering make the college experience so much more fun and worth it.
Great for these types of students This school is great for all types of students. Almost anyone can relate with someone else here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Not a day goes by when I don't learn something new. I am enrolled in the Engineering program and it is definitely very fast-paced, but the challenge is what makes the program so interesting. Besides school, though, I learn a lot of other skills, such as public speaking, building relationships, and common sense.
Am enjoying being here The campus is AMAZING and there's never nothing to do. There are several libraries and each offers a unique study environment. The campuses offer a wide range of restaurants for the student body, as well as hangouts to go to with your peers. North Campus, on which I live, is a bit more serene and quiet, while Central Campus is the heart of the university. I enjoy the peace but it's always enjoyable to go down to Central and explore everything that the university has to offer.
Bang for the buck The university offers several services for its students, such as the Blue Buses, which are free to ride for students and local residents and workers. The public Ann Arbor white buses are also free to students. The university offers a fair amount of printing for all the students and computers and computer labs are available throughout campus and free to use. The dorm halls offer many amenities, including a free handyman service as well as a dining hall with food to fit any dietary requirement.
Tips for prospective students Bring warm clothes for the cold months, and be prepared for any type of weather! Study hard ahead of time and keep track of all your assignments so that you don't fall behind. Walk through all of your classes before they start so you're not left wandering blindly around campus.
Great for these types of students Hardworking, unique students who are willing to put in time to both enrich their education and their lives as well.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Michigan is a great school & has many educating classes to back that up. I have been learning a lot from my classes and although they are hard they are very much worth it. I am in the nursing school and know that I will be well prepared for the real job after all the classes here.
Am enjoying being here Not only is the school, teachers, and classes great but the city is too. There is so much to do here and its a great environment. There are many places to study other than the libraries, and in the winter the libraries create a perfect environment for all the studying you need.
Bang for the buck Michigan is a very expensive school but it's very worth it. You pay for what you get. There are great classes and room and board are worth it too. The meal plans cover your eating needs, and most of the cafeterias are open for a good portion of the day. Everything is in close walking distance and on cold days, the busses are always running to take you where you need to go.
Tips for prospective students Learn how to take very good notes and study well on your own before you come. The teachers are great at what they do but as I mentioned earlier, the classes are very hard. Worth it but very hard.
Great for these types of students Students who like being in the middle of everything.
Students who want to be a part of a very culturally diverse community.
Students who want to get a very good education.Login to rate or flag the reviews
