    Am learning a lot

Most the instructors I've had were great. Many interesting courses are offered and I've enjoyed most of my classes.

    Am enjoying being here

Duluth is a great city and dorm life is comfortable. I am however transferring to a smaller city only because I personally desire a smaller college.

    Bang for the buck

I have not compared tuition, but its likely just as costly as any other liberal arts college.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early, and turn in your housing deposit early! Meet people and get involved, I missed out on a lot first semester because I did not join many clubs.

Great for these types of students

UMD is great for someone who loves the outdoors, football (national champs!) and hockey (men's and women's teams are outstanding). Although Duluth has nasty winters, you wont need to go outside between classes because everything is connected by a concourse system ;)

    Will learn a lot

    There are many options available.

    Will enjoy being here

I love Duluth. It has so many things to offer and so many things to do.

    Bang for the buck

A student only pays for the first 13 credits. All credits after that are free.

    Tips for prospective students

Go into it with an open mind and ready to try new things.

Great for these types of students

People who love snow and the activities that go with it.

    Am learning a lot

I am in the business school and have been for 3 years know. I am just going into my senior year and have found every class i have taken to very helpful. The most important thing for me is that i have been able to relate much of it to my outside experience, such as my internship. I found this to be very important to me because that is one of the key areas i looked for in a college

    Am enjoying being here

I am very happy with where i am at. It gives you the small town feel, while still having some aspects of living in a big cities. If you are an outdoors person or enjoy adventure Duluth is the city for you. The school offers many opportunities to explore the beauty of the area. A few examples i would recommend that i have been on is any of the fishing trips, climbing trips, and would definitely recommend doing the Superior Hiking Trail.

    Bang for the buck

Like any major University Duluth is more spendy than any community college, but in comparison to schools in the twin cities Duluth has them far beat for price. A big benefit for the Duluth area is that living expense are great deal less than living in down town Minneapolis or St. Paul.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply as soon as you can you do not want to miss out on the experiences that University of Minnesota Duluth has to offer.

Great for these types of students

Great for any type of student. If you like to have a sense of adventure though University of Minnesota Duluth is for you.

    Am learning a lot

I have taken a lot of different courses from different departments and I have learned a ton. My teachers actually care about how I am doing in their classes which makes me want to attend their classes.

    Am enjoying being here

I like duluth a lot. While it is cold I have found that it is the perfect weather for people who like going outside and skiing or snowboarding. It is also really helpful that they have a great busing system.

    Bang for the buck

Great for students! Lots of financial aid is available and there are lots of jobs for students even with such a small town. There are lots of sports to go to and there are a lot free games and things to do on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Research the program you want to go into before applying. I know quite a few people who have gone to Duluth only to find that their program is not good.

Great for these types of students

Anyone wanting to go into journalism, psychology, criminology, education, and anthropology the programs are awesome and the teachers are really nice. Students who like being outdoors or wanting to party it is a great school for you.

    Am learning a lot

All of the professors are so amazing! No classes are taught only by TA's so you always have someone qualified teaching you.

    Am enjoying being here

There are so many clubs and extracurriculars! And you are so close to the city, you can go skiing five minutes away, or rock climb downtown. Buses are free so you don't need a car!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition here is cheaper than the U Twin cities, and has just as great academic standing! St. Scholastica is right next door, and so are community colleges. You are allowed to take classes there!

    Tips for prospective students

Join the Honors Program. There is a $700 scholarship every semester.

Great for these types of students

Students with diversity, GLBTA students, students with disabilities and International Students. UMD has special programs for all of the above!

    Academic Rigor

The professors are great when it comes to helping students, even in big lectures. They respond quickly to email and are always available during office hours. There are many great resources here to help you succeed as well such as the tutoring center (my personal favorite), the first year experience office, and the career office (can help with resumes). All of these services accept walk-ins and are free of charge!

    Am enjoying being here

Duluth is an awesome city and you can find something to do during every time of the year. You can go to the beach on Lake Superior and walk in the sand. You can go to Canal Park and watch the ships come through the lift bridge along with going shopping. In the Winter you can go see the Ice Caves. Also, Gooseberry Falls is a very fun place for hiking and seeing waterfalls. There is a mall close by, a Cub Foods, Target, and Best Buy. The campus is big, but not too big. The people are great as well and it's really easy to make friends. Finally, UMD has a tunnel system so for those of you who hate the cold winter (like me) you don't have to go outside if you don't want to. Then you can laugh at your friends at other schools who have to wear boots and winter jackets to class!

    Bang for the buck

Any college will be expensive. But I like Duluth because it is cheaper than a private school and a lot smaller than the Twin Cities campus so it's kind of the best of both worlds. Tuition is about $5400 a semester. You would also have to cover a meal plan and room and board if you want to live on campus so it costs roughly $18000-$19000 per year to go to school here. But there are scholarships from UMD for new students, current students and usually each department (depending on your major) offers scholarships as well. Don't forget to fill out the FAFSA!

    Tips for prospective students

The better you do in high school the more money you can get from Duluth for being a new incoming student. Fill out as many scholarship applications as you can, including the FAFSA. Also, apply early! There have been dorm room shortages in the past so applying early guarantees you will get one. Take the ACT and get a good score.

Great for these types of students

Great for those who want a smaller school but don't want to pay private school tuition.
Also, great for those who hate the cold winter months. You can stay inside at Duluth!
Finally, great for students who love football (national champions) and who love hockey (D-1 Hockey and a new arena)

    Am learning a lot

I have taken four classes so far. I have two honors classes. These are great because they are a smaller setting and look great on a transcript. It is much easier to ask questions in a smaller setting, and it is more conducive to learning

    Am enjoying being here

The atmosphere at Duluth is great. The dorms are connected to the building so the whole school has a homey feel. There are a lot of great activities for students on campus and there is always someone to hang out with.

    Bang for the buck

This college is a great price compared to the price of school now. There are many scholarships available for students. There is a student activity fee that allows us to participate in all the activities and it is well worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Live in the dorms. It really helps you get connected to people. Also try to apply early. The earlier you apply, the better your chances are of getting accepted and the housing process depends on when you applied

Great for these types of students

UMD is great for students who want a lot of opportunites with a small town feel. Everything is compact and connected. The people are friendly and the access to education is endless

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot at UMD. It is helpful to take classes in random areas just to broaden your knowledge and fun to meet people that way as well. You are provided with a lot of information but with any college you really have to put forth effort to learn and teach yourself. Some professors expect you to know and learn the material yourself.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being in the Duluth area. It has so much to offer and is a very active community. UMD in general is an okay school in my opinion. Personally, it doesn't fit my lifestyle as well as I hoped because I'm more of a chill, small town girl but I still love UMD regardless. The people at UMD are mostly from the extended cities area and have that lifestyle.

    Bang for the buck

I feel that you are paying for a good education and the name of a degree from this University, which has a good reputation. I do feel that the fees are somewhat overbearing and expensive but come with any college. Tuition has raised a lot over these past two years which is hard in today's economy but overall, I find it about average.

    Tips for prospective students

One huge tip for incoming freshman or transfers is to GET INVOVLED and BE ACTIVE right way. Being a mentor to freshmen for a year, the number one thing freshman were telling me is that they aren't making a lot of actual friends. They said they were meeting a lot of people but the only way you are going to become friends with someone is repetition of seeing this person. A great way to do this is by getting involved in organizations and clubs so you can see and get to know people more than just meeting them.

Great for these types of students

UMD is great for students that like the city life in my opinion. Most students that attend UMD are generally from the extended cities area/suburbs and usually connect easier with each other because they can relate to where others come from.

    Am learning a lot

College is a lot different from high school. You're told that most of the time but it's completely different when you're in it. I've been learning a lot and love my degree, and the profesores are really helpful.

    Am enjoying being here

It's a really great place to go! There is so many club to meet people and lots to do in town.

    Bang for the buck

College costs a lot of money and you never know really if you're over paying but i feel like i am putting my time and effort into the right place so I feel it is well spent. Though the stores on campus are a rip off.

    Tips for prospective students

The college is really big and you probably don't think you'll be able to get it down but you will. I came from a really small school so it was pretty scary at frist but its fun to explore!

Great for these types of students

Most of the stores in the college are over priced so venture out in town to get stuff for cheaper.
