    Mizzou is a huge learning experience in every aspect. I've learned not only about my subjects but about good study habits, organizational habits and myself. The teachers are generally understanding but tough and if you take the time to talk to them and work with them they will do everything in their power to help you succeed.

    The constant activity and friendships I've had and made at has made Mizzou a second home for me. I love it there and I visit every chance I get in the summer.
    Bang for the buck

    It's extremely pricey but worth it for all of the experiences they offer you and discounts you get on touring Broadway plays, concerts and food. But like I said it is extremely pricey and will set you back. I'm having to take a semester off to take some gen ed courses at community college to save money and I'm taking another semester off just to work to help pay. SCHOLARSHIPS AND LOANS ARE YOUR FRIENDS!
    Tips for prospective students

    Study hard and don't get distracted by everything there is to do on campus. Mizzou is a lot of fun, buzzing with constant activity between sports, concerts, speakers and other special events but you can't let that get in the way of your academics. Mizzou is an educational facility first and they won't waste time letting you know that. Make sure you find the right group of people to be around who can help you succeed and have fun. Also, as in much of life, listening to those who have experienced it can help a lot so take as much advice from upperclassmen as possible. Finally, and this applies to any school, DON'T OVER WORK YOURSELF. When you're first registering for classes they're going to try and get you to sign up for about 16+ hours, DON'T LET THEM! It's important to remember that as an incoming freshmen you're adjusting to a new lifestyle and a new way of learning so take it easy your first semester. Start with around 12-14 credits (unless you have a scholarship that says otherwise... than do the bare minimum you have to do for them) so you can get settled and comfortable. Then second semester you can start to add more hours.
    Great for these types of students

    This school is best for people who can balance well and who want the full college experience. The music department is great and extremely underrated around the country. kind of a little hidden gem in the world of music schools, so I highly recommend it to people who want to work in the music world. Also under their catagory of hidden gems, their psychology department is rated one of the highest compared to other state schools in the country. Not to mention it's engineering, agriculture and journalism schools that have helped it's reputation of great education.

    Mizzou so far has been a great experience for me. I am currently about to start my sophomore year and I feel with the help and opportunities I had freshman year that I am ready to face the challenges on taking classes more in-depth to my major. Mizzou has a great general education requirement that allowed me to take classes that were outside my major and I primarily had no interest in, that opened my eyes to other opportunities and actually lead me to change my major to biology based on my general requirement class and how much I enjoyed the subject and the professors. Mizzou has also helped me gain confidence in my studies, before I was a constant C- math student always ruining my A/B's with that one C in math, but thanks to the Learning Center ( a student oriented, free tutoring service) they paired me with the perfect tutor who was willing to go above and beyond and helped me come out of Algebra with a new appreciation for the subject. Of course what is college with out your extracurricular and social life? There is so much to do at Mizzou I can barely touch base on it, every club you can think of is there, and even some that might peak your interest in something new. I wanted to try something new and now I work on the television show the Dynamo Effect for MUTV and have made some great friends, joining a club that is relevant for your major and one for something you may enjoy can help you strike a balance between work and play. Also Mizzou has a great dorm systems where they aren't too far apart for each other so visiting friends is a breeze and the nightlife is amazing for a town its size. The downtown area blends into the campus being a 10 minute walk from the center (Brady Commons) of campus. There are lots of nights for the under 21 crowd as well as places to eat and vintage and boutiques to shop at. The sporting events make for a fun free night (or discounted if you have a student pass) and every Friday night Mizzou after Dark plans something free for students, $5 for the public to do. I am 12 hours away from home and started out knowing not one person there. Now I am making friends that feel like family and making great grades for college that I didn't think I was prepared for. Mizzou is a wonderful experience for anyone who chooses to go. You just have to have the drive and confidence to find your niche.
    Tips for prospective students

    Say hi to everyone on your floor, that will be your family and home away from home, at least until you start meeting people in your 500+ student lecture halls.
    Join clubs or do intramural sports, its a great way to relieve stress and to do something you enjoy while networking and meeting new people.
    Use your resources- YOU ARE PAYING FOR SCHOOL, and basically a lot of salaries around there so don't let anyone a professor, TA or tutor take advantage of that, get help when you realize you need it and before it becomes too late. Some classes you only get 3 grades and after a bad one it is hard to bring it up.

    I can certainly tell you that they have so much fun and cool things to do there. Their Homecoming celebration, it lasts 2 WEEKS!! (FYI: Mizzou was the first to start Homecoming celebrations). They also have a new Rec. Center that has anything a Sports/Athletics junky could want.

    mu is a bit pricey with the tuition rates and their high end dorm rooms, but when it comes to most other colleges that offer what mizzou does for students to do, it's easy to say that it's the the better deal.
    Tips for prospective students

    if you go to this school, don't walk in and get pulled in by all the frills and thrills that the school offers. stay focused on your work, study, and then, if you have time, work in extra stuff that you can do on times when you have a gap between classes. don't forget, find scholarships and loans that you can use to pay for tuition and other costs. when looking at loans make sure it can be easily payed off later, you don't want it hanging over your head long after your out of school. find local jobs that can be easily worked into your school schedule and work for classes, my suggestion would be, if you like working with kids, adventure club. adventure club staff is predominantly college students and works great with any class schedule. finally, don't overload yourself with tons of extras and credit hours just because it says in your degree qualifications, this is only recommended for the students who want to get out quickly and are able to take the load. but don't let all of this bum you out, have fun when it's appropriate and find good friends that can help you through school but not act as a distraction/easy-way-out.

    Your first day at Mizzou will be probably one of the best days of your life. However, you will learn quick the ways of college. The people at this school do an amazing at job at introducing people to one another by having several events during the first week to get people to bond together.

    Seriously, I don't think I'd ever consider going to another school. Football games, thousand's of students, and the greek life here are simply phenomenal. [NOT TO MENTION WE JUST BEAT OKLAHOMA :)] The spirit we have here makes these four years the best of your life. Time fly's while you're having fun!

    This is a decently expensive college, but they do a good job with financial aid and ensuring that their students have the financial support they need. To be on the safe side however, make sure you apply for scholarships. (There's an amazing book store and it's very easy to student charge clothing and other items which makes your tuition rise quick)
    Tips for prospective students

    ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS attend class. I was sitting in a lecture hall when one third of the class decided to leave early. The professor ended up giving everyone who stayed 10 extra credit points on the final exam.

    Make sure you take good notes, make friends, and have study groups. Having friends in a class will be the most beneficial thing.

    Any type of student. The great thing about Mizzou is that everyone is so incredibly different and unique. There is always something interesting you can learn by just meeting different students here.

    Mizzou is well known for its schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, law, and journalism. Going to Mizzou for a career in one of these schools will be one of the best investments a student could make. Having said that, Mizzou is exemplary in all aspects of education, but other degrees could be earned with an equal reputation and expertise at another, and less expensive, school. Being in the journalism school myself, I am aware that it is top tier in the country and I will not be hard pressed to find a job after graduation. The experience j students earn at Mizzou is unlike any other institution in the United States- not to mention the study abroad internship opportunities for students of any background. Plus, the size and diversity of degree options is helpful when a student changes majors. There is always another path to choose at Mizzou.

    Columbia is the perfect transition into the real world. Mizzou itself is a liberal atmosphere set in a conservative midwestern town. There are so many organizations to get involved in anyone can fit in anywhere. Greek town is a huge part of Mizzou life- their presence in Mizzou can be felt through their community service and the AMAZING parties. There are other non-greek community service organizations, clubs, free student activities to get involved in. We have free comedians (Lewis Black), concerts (Spill Canvas) and monthly outdoor movies to enjoy, outside of the bars and comedy clubs in downtown Columbia. Plus, the tigers and basketball are amazing, even for usually non-sports fans (me).
    Bang for the buck

    If you have a set plan of what you want from college, whether you want to study abroad, and what you want out of your career, and you still feel that Mizzou can provide that, then you will get the bang for the buck. If you're undecided, getting general education requirements out of the way at a community college will save you a TON in the future. There is nothing a community college can't provide as far as gen eds that Mizzou can. Plus, Mizzou has a decent scholarship pool, but considering the increasing student population and demands for scholarships, they are being allocated more and more to Walter Williams scholars (33 ACT and top 10% in graduating class). Don't meet those? Neither do I. Mizzou's scholarships are severely lacking compared to Truman or Webster University in St. Louis. But if you love Mizzou, and are determined to go no where else, you can always scour websites like cappex to find scholarships for yourself. If you really love Mizzou you can always find a way to pay for it.
    Tips for prospective students

    If you're in AP classes now and have an idea of what your major may be, make an appointment with your guidance counselor and make sure you AP credits will count towards your degree. Otherwise you find out the hard way, and its not cool.
    Great for these types of students

    If you're a student that will try to make Columbia your new home and get involved, then you will love Columbia. But it can be a very lonely and big place if you stay in your shell. (And definitely buy the student season ticket combo because the sports are excellent and a great way to meet other people)

    The University of Missouri is a huge financial and academic commitment but is has been the best commitment I have made so far in my life. There are several top notch degree programs and colleges on campus. If you are thinking about being a Journalism major it is THE best school to go to. I was automatically accepted into the School of Journalism...it has been the best experience. As a freshman I have learned so much about the industry, learned how to network, and learned how to set myself up for success as a journalist. The professors have all been successful professionals in their field and have so much to teach future journalist. As a freshman this past year I was in a Freshman Interest Group, that helped me meet people on my dorm floor and get involved. Through this group I volunteered at a retirement home close to campus, I suggest to anyone and everyone to volunteer somewhere. I loved spending my time at the retirement home. It was a learning experience in itself.
    Am enjoying being here

    The campus is gorgeous and offers so much for students to do. It can be overwhelming at first but get involved! As a freshman I joined AAF Mizzou, the advertising club on campus and served as the only freshman on the executive board as the secretary. I got to help older students with a national competition, visit companies in my field, and learn from current professionals. This up coming year I will be serving on the executive board as Assistant Vice President of Public Relations. Joining clubs and getting involved makes the campus feel small and eventually like home. I am also a part of Greek Life on campus. I can honestly say that I love my sorority and have met so many people from all over the country because of joining. Its another great way to get involved because it's own little community. If going Greek is not something you're interested in, no big deal! There is plenty to do on and off campus for a social life. Downtown is awesome! Plenty of restaurants and 18 and older bars and dance clubs.

    Like I said before, Mizzou is a huge financial commitment but you get to experience college at one of the best schools in the U.S. Academics are top notch, athletics are awesome and the student body is phenomenal. Professors are there to make your education the best it can possibly be and the school spirit is like nothing else!

    Number one GET INVOLVED!!!!! There are too many opportunities on campus not to get involved.
    Two try to get as many scholarships as possible to lessen the financial part.
    Three go to at least one football game! A tiger game is the best!

    You have got to know how to balance a social life and academics. And prioritize what is most important...Academics over a party any night!

    Honestly, Mizzou is one of those schools where you definitely get in what you put in. If you want As, the teachers are going to make you work for them, and doing the bare minimum won't get you a C, it'll get you a D or an F, but Mizzou is NOT a difficult school. I think if anything you get a lot of life experiences here, the teachers do care about your success and there are so many opportunities for you to succeed. All in all, I've learned so much about myself here as well as academically, I would give Mizzou a 5, except I live in the library sometimes, and that's no fun.

    I love it here! When I say there's something for everyone, I kid you not. There are over 500 student organizations alone. As far as social life, and partying. There's a fair amount of that. I think it all depends on the people you hang out with. For the under 21 crowd, there's house parties, and on thursdays a few clubs will let you in, but for the most part, partying downtown is out. But, that doesn't really ruin much for me, I mean it's super easy to meet people here and everyone's pretty friendly.

    Definitely, definitely worth the money. It will set you back quite a bit, I've been here for 2 years, 24,000 in debt! That's crazy, but it's reality. But we have a brand new student center, best gym (we call it the rec) ever, and a ton of other little perks, like computer labs everywhere, the Student Health Center, where you can go anytime you get sick, for FREEE, like seriously, whatever you could possibly be looking for, Mizzou has thought of and has, and continues to add. Not to mention excellent education. I'm accepted to the number one journalism school in the country. That's mindblowing!! How many people can say they went to the number one school in the country for their profession? I don't like debt, but if I thought for a second that it wasn't worth it, I would leave.
    Tips for prospective students

    Basically, I'd have to say what one of the other reviewers said, and that's STAY FOCUSED. Mizzou has a ton of great opportunities and so much to do, but you're really here for one reason and that's to get an education. It's easy to get distracted but if you just TIME MANAGE a little bit, you'll be fine. Just don't get behind on your work, and ask for help if you need it. If there's one thing Mizzou has, it's plenty of help.

    The professors really know their material. All of or professors have to write books and have a Ph.D in their prospective fields. We are bascially reading our professor materials. You can also have one-on-one talks with your professors for extra help with their very flexible office hours. If you need even more help, we have a student learning center that can provide you tutoring in any field you need tutoring in. MIZZOU is the greatest! =)

    There's plenty to do around campus and off campus. We're not that far from the downtown district and it's very easy to find your way around. We also have public transportation that is great for getting you to Walmart, Target, or the Columbia Mall as well as the movie theaters.

    We're always hiring on campus whether you want to work at our state of the art Student Rec, rated #1 by Sports Illustrated, or at one of the many dining facilities. I was also fortunate enough to receive plenty of financial aid where I didn't have to pay a dime out of pocket for my first year of college.

    Take a tour of the campus to get the feel of our glorious atmosphere. Even though Missouri is cold in the winters, I'm sure you'll find the campus breathtaking as well as the friendly students around campus that you can stop to ask questions.

    I never wanted to stay in Missouri for college, but now that I'm at the University of Missouri (better known as MIZZOU!) I love it! I couldn't imagine being as happy as I am now, anywhere else. The people are very helpful and friendly and you'll immediately fall in love!

    Mizzou is a great place to be. Even if you struggle in a class you will learn a lot. The professors are highly intelligent and are very nice people.

    The culture at Mizzou is great. From the Tiger Walk freshmen year, to homecoming, to all the sports events. You will always feel excitement at Mizzou. The parties aren't bad either.

    I give this 3 stars not because you don't get bang for you buck; its because Mizzou REALLY wants their bucks. I have plenty of friends have to leave because of their financial situations. You get a great overall experience but they will pressure you for their money.

    - GO TO CLASS!!!!!!

    - Figure out how you study. This can be one of the most important things and you should do this early.

    - Mizzou is a big campus but buildings are a lot closer that they appear on maps so get used to thinking something is further than it really is.

    - Don't try to cram at the last minute. It might work it might not so do your studying a few days ahead if you can.

    the university of missouri is fantastic. i wanted to go to a college that was outside of missouri, perhaps on a coast, but because of financial problems i was not able to do that. however, i consider having gone to university of missouri as one of the best things that has happened to me.
    Tips for prospective students

    for future students, i would say to make sure that you keep up with your studies. with all the activities and fun available, it is easy to get distracted. definitely make frequent appointments with your major advisor and purposefully get to know all of your professors.
    Academic Rigor

    i am in some honors classes, and i know from experience that the work is challenging. however, it's not just the honors classes. every class i have been in so far has provided good work for me and forced me to spend a great deal outside of class studying.
    Dorm Life

    i absolutely love my hall and floor. they are some of my closest friends. if i could live in the dorms for all four years, i probably would. the leaders on the floors are great too, very personable and friendly.
    Food and Dining

    there are a lot of food options at mizzou, with over six dining halls to choose from and plenty of other food options outside of the regular meal plans.
    What to do for fun

    downtown columbia surprised me because although it is relatively small, especially coming from inner city kansas city, there is so much to do each and every day. i spend almost every day down there, hanging out in a coffee shop or exploring an art gallery.

    it is an amazing school with wonderful opportunities. going to this university will allow many benefits for me when it's time to go out and find a job. although, this school is quite large there's numerous resources around to make you feel comfortable, and not as if your just merely a number.

    for incoming students i would tell them to do research to make sure this is the place they really want to be. mizzou is not at all easy and if your heart and mind isn't in to studying or coming hear you want succeed. however, if there's ever anything they may be struggling in there are of course several resources to help them out.

    the academics here are serious. in order to receive an a you have to really apply yourself, not just going to class and doing the work. you have to study and constantly review the material. no professor will freely pass out a's and the grading scale at mizzou is quite different than a lot of colleges. the scale can go from a+, a, a- and each one effects your gpa differently.
    Dorm Life

    dorm life is a great experience. it gives you an opportunity to meet other freshman's or upper class men. you can also get involved in your dorm as well, which is another way to meet people.
    Food and Dining

    dining hall food is good. of course its not anything like home cooked meals that my mom makes but it's still good. my favorite dining halls would be dobbs and plaza, both of these places food taste the best. plus, dobbs is right by my dorm so it's really easy to roll out of bed and catch some breakfast.

    The University of Missouri-Columbia has a variety of majors, clubs, and opportunities to explore. It provides one with the tools to be successful in life, and immerses students in a diverse learning environment. It is a place to create a solid foundation in regards to academics and friendships, a foundation that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

    As long as you apply yourself, do the work, and study, classes are manageable and doable. It's important to attend classes, take notes, and to balance your time wisely- if one does all this, then classes will not be such a hassle.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life is a great way to meet new people and join in activities/clubs around campus. Many people leave their doors open, which allows you to meet people that are living in your building. There are dorm governments that include leadership and volunteer opportunities.
    Food and Dining

    I actually work at one of the cafeterias on campus, which has worked great with my class schedule and has allowed me to meet a lot of new people. Most of the cafeterias have a grill, salad and pasta bar, dessert area, and a deli. Along with the cafeterias, there are also a variety of places to eat in the Student Center or Downtown.

    I don't know what is meant by bang the buck but I assume it is related to the cost of living. The cost of living here is modest compared to a lot of other cites be they major or just college towns.

    UMC is overall a good place to come and study because there are not a whole lot of distractions. Money- wise, don't get caught up into getting a whole lot of loans; maybe initially but after that find scholarships, fellowships and internships to support yourself on. Unfortunately, UMC does not have a whole lot of institutional scholarships so you have to seek elsewhere to satisfy that area.

    The teachers at Mizzou are amazing. I went from being a small town girl to a school of 30,000 students. Some of my classes are around 500 students in a lecture hall, & some of my classes average around 20. Regardless, the curriculum is great, & the learning experience is amazing!

    I absolutely love Mizzou's campus. It's beautiful, the people are friendly, and there is always something to do. Not a day goes by where I am sitting at home bored. I actually enjoy how large the campus is, but I know some people that dislike it. It just depends on how much you like walking.

    Some tips for prospective students would be: 1) Do not skip class! It becomes a bad habit, and the lectures are a crucial part of exams 2) Be social! Go to club meetings, socials, and other fun activities to make new friends and 3) Study hard! Priorities are always a mess in your first year of college. Just remember grades are the reason you are here! Sometimes getting better grades are more important than partying.

    Both my parents went to Mizzou and got degrees from there. From what they have told me it is a great school that teaches very well but can be hard to learn for freshman due to partying that takes place around campus

    The variety of classes offered for undergraduates at Mizzou is overwhelming, but allows each student to challenge their self and set their own pace. My teachers are intelligent and know how to actually teach the material not just apply it on their own, and I love that the honors classes are smaller.

    The atmosphere on campus is positive and extremely volunteer- orientated. Both the teachers and the students have a passion for learning and a pride for the campus as a whole. Tons of organizations allow for one to explore and meet new people while having fun. The only downside is the amount of work and stress that comes with such a big university, this however is worth it in the end.

    Although the institution comes at a high price, many scholarships are offered for merit, diversity, and sports/ organization affiliations. Talking with counselors and looking into scholarships and grants are important if you are wanting to make your Mizzou price-tag smaller. Everything said and done though, I believe the experience and education here are priceless.

    I am currently a chemical engineering major and I absolutely love the engineering department. Not only are they always available, but they are knowledgeable and want their students to succeed. They offer tutoring for engineering students and great advisers that know what they are doing. Extremely important because sometimes having someone to go to in such a big campus is a blessing.

    There are a lot of grad students teaching classes here, especially at the lower level classes. They know what they are talking about thankfully, but some don't really know how to get the information across. Can't say I've been too impressed about that, although there are some grad. instructors that I would absolutely recommend (esp. in the classics department), so its kind of a 50/50 when it comes to grad instructors. I haven't been too impressed with the psychology grad instructors at all though.
    But graduate students aren't always a bad thing, and the larger your school is, the more of them there are likely to be. Its really only the lower level classes that they teach at, so as you move up in your college career, the more likely you are to have experienced instructors. But of course your experiences with each one will always be different. There really is a wide range of okay to amazing here and thankfully I have yet to run into any downright 'bad.'

    One of the best things though is that most of the faculty is always available. They actually want to talk to you and they like to hear what you have to say. If you are ever having any trouble or if you just downright don't understand something, chances are they're going to want to help you out. Your instructors are people too, and most the time they are really nice.

    I love Columbia and Mizzou. There is a lot to do here and the student groups are always putting events on for the students. You'll feel especially welcomed here in the beginning of the year, as there are plenty of events to get you integrated into new college life. The bottom line pretty much is there is always something to do.
    And for the party people out there, you'll never be bored with the night life. There are plenty of clubs and Greek parties to keep you satisfied if that's what you like to do.

    Mizzou is, at least for me, very expensive. If you can get your own place after your first year I recommend doing it as it will save you quite a lot of money. I also recommend summer classes at a community college if its necessary that you take them, as they are much cheaper that what you would pay here for the same amount of credit hours.
    While Mizzou is really expensive, I believe they do put their money to good use. The campus is huge and the buildings are beautiful-especially the new student center and the bookstore. The Rec center is another great big place your money is spent on and it shows; the equipment and facilities are all top notch.
    Mizzou has also been doing a lot of remodeling lately, so they are trying to make the campus a nicer place. Most of the dorms have been remodeled already and some are still on the list. The only thing about the dorms you maybe upset about is the lack of space, but hey-its college and that's pretty much expected. At least everything is clean and new.

    My education at Mizzou has been an amazing experience. The classes are tough, but very educational and teach you a lot. The majority of the teachers that I have had have genuinely cared about me and my education, you just have to take the time to get to know them. The amount of information that i have learned the the 1 and 1/2 semesters I have been here has been eminence, and much of what I have learned will be helpful when I am out of college.

    I LOVE being here, the campus is wonderful! I grew up on a farm and was very nervous of the fact that the school was in a city, but it hardly seems as though it is in a metropolitan area. There are many activities to do on campus and you can almost always find something to do. Also, there are a variety of clubs and organizations to be involved with which makes college/dorm life that much better.

    All of my classes have given me great returns for that amount of time and money that i put into them. But, if you don't put the time and effort into the classes you wont be able to get the Bang for the buck that you may be expecting. It is essential to work at all of your classes and not mess around constantly, or you will just be spending a lot of money for a small amount of education and a whole bunch of bad grades that wont be helpful as you continue on in your life.

    Don't get caught up in all of the parties and activities on campus. Yes you need to have fun sometimes, but keep it to a normal scale. A lot of kids get here and all they do for the first semester/year is party and not care about their classes. There is a balance that you need to meet, don't go out partying before a big test, you will probably not do so hot on your test. You have to have some fun or you will go crazy, so try to find the perfect balance between classes and parties.
    Also, you get what you put into your classes, so don't just mess around and not take them seriously; after all they are what will prepare you for the rest of your life.

    I am in the Animal Science department at Mizzou, and it is amazing and I love it here. Also, there are a lot of Journalism majors that are here and the Journalism college is pretty amazing too.

    Make sure to see your advisor nice and early before any registration. That is the one downfall in my opinion. Beware the Honors College. They do not always do what they promise.

    This school is great for someone with initiative. But no for someone who needs their hand held the whole way through. I would also highly recommend for undecided majors with a wide variety of interests. I had a career coach helping me choose classes that would fit a wide varitey of interests while still getting my somewhere and not wasting time. They have lots of resources like this available.

They really love what they are teaching and try to share that love with all students.     Even though I do not have my own experience at this University I know that it is a great school to get an education at, because of my families experiences. My brother went here for his business degree and about a month after his graduation he was offered a full-time job to run a camp in Colorado, his dream job.

    There is so much to do at the University of Missouri. Not only do they have a great athletic environment they also have a lot of other activities for students to participate in. There is of course the typical Greek involvement, Venture Out, which is an outdoor program for the outdoor enthusiasts. The campus has a lot of stuff to do, but the town of Columbia is also a great place to live and has lots of places for students to go to. There is a well known club there called the Blue Note that has a lot of great musical talents constantly going there.

    This school is one of the highest rated schools in Missouri. You get a great education, experience, and learn so much more. It expensive even for a Missouri resident, but still will be worth the money your spending.

    I am a prospective student so it is hard for me to give you information, but the greatest advice that I can give you is follow the guidelines they go by for admitting a student into their university. If you don't think that you qualify for the university, I still encourage you to apply, because there are those circumstances where they will still admit you.     Coming from a graduating class of 50 students, Mizzou was much different than I had experienced. Even though the classes are much larger than I expected, I found it great that the staff is always helpful when I need assistance on assignments or labs.

    The school spirit for the university is very contagious. Everyone loves the tigers and way the students get ready for the home football games is exciting. My first year Homecoming experience was more than I ever dreamed of. I participated in the parade, campus decorations and homecoming game.

    Make sure you visit campus before applying for the university. This is the best way to see a glimpse of what is offered besides classes. Summer Welcome is also a very helpful experience to actually feel how large the campus is. Be sure participate in as many activities on campus once you get here. By participating in activities, you find that you meet a ton of students quickly and can find your true friends for life. Also, be prepared to actually study if you want to be successful.

    The classes are often large, usually anywhere between 50 and 500 for freshman, but several classes have smaller groups of about 20 for labs and discussions, so you still get to know people. The classes are very informative, and almost all teachers videotape their classes and put them on blackboard (a website for teachers to post grades, homework, etc for students) so even if you miss a class you can still get the information. Most classes are lecture based and reading the book is optional but extremely recommended if you want to do well on tests.

    Most of the dorms on campus are recently renovated and very nice to live in. Mizzou has a great educational system but there's definitely no denying that it's a party school, so if you're into partying, this is the place to be. But even freshman who just want to focus on school can enjoy dorm life, because parties happen outside the dorms, meaning most people are gone weekend nights, so it's relatively quiet.

    Mizzou is pretty expensive for out-of-staters, but residents of MO get great deals- very low in-state tuition and LOTS of resident scholarships. There aren't many scholarships for non-residents, so the first year might be a bit expensive. But it's extremely easy to become a resident (live here for a year, make about $2,000 of MO-taxable money, and a few other requirements) so you could be paying in-state your sophmore year onward.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get very good academics, especially if you're out-of-state. There are a few academic scholarships here for nonresidents, such as the Mark Twain scholarship, which depends largely on your ACT score. Make sure you go to Summer Welcome, as it's a great chance to get to know the campus, make friends and get a lot of information. Also, if you already know what career you want and you're going to live in a dorm, check out the Freshman Interest Groups and Learning Communities on Mizzou's school website- basically you can live on the same floor as people w/the same interest as you. Also, try not to get more than 15 credit hours your first semester- there's going to be a lot of sports, clubs, and other activities going on, so you don't want to overload by adding a ton of school work. Take the first semester to adjust, then add more classes second semester if you think you're ready.

    Journalism is big here, but there are plenty of other options. Both hard-core party people and studious types can do well (I have plenty of both on my floor in Schurz Hall), but party people need to also know that they can't get by here without studying. People who know how to balance school, fun, and extracurricular activities should have no problems here.

    The campus becomes a lot smaller after you start to get to know people, so do not let the size intimidate you. The classes at Mizzou are the real deal: there is no such thing as a 'blow off' class here. The professors take their jobs very seriously and do not care if you show up or not. But I suggest showing up. The advisers are great about helping you with your schedule and will not try to make you take 16+ hours your first semester: mine would not let me sign up for more than 14. They understand that the transition between high school and college is difficult and WANT you to succeed.

    If you are considering joining the University of Missouri family, be ready to come with an open mind and ready to learn. Don't be fooled by are party school reputation, MU is all about the academics and you will get a first rate education here. The teachers are, for the most part, very dedicated and caring individuals who genuinely want to help every student learn and succeed. All of my teachers from the Ag department have been very knowledgeable about their subjects, easily accessible, flexible and willing to help or answer any questions.

    There is always something to do at MU, I don't think its possible to not keep busy. The sports, clubs and organizations are all over the place and I think there is literally something going on in some department almost everyday. On a more personal note, the staff is always very helpful, the food is amazing, and most of the dorms are really nice places to live.

    I think you get what you pay for at MU, for the most part. You learn a lot, you get to go to class every day on a beautiful and historic campus and like I mentioned earlier the dorms and food are all very good. I think personally the school store is a little overpriced at times but on the flip side you get discounts on the football game tickets.

    Always remember to plan your extra curricular activities around your studying not your studying around your extra curricular stuff. Its way to easy to get sidetracked by all the cool things MU and Columbia have to offer, don't forget that your grades should always come first. Also its very easy to let yourself burn out here, everyone should have one thing they can do that is just for fun and that doesn't necessary have anything to with your major, it makes handling stress much easier.
    On a side notes some tips to any incoming freshmen from some one who has been there done that. Bikes are usually easier to use on campus than cars, and they are generally good to have around just in case you need it. You can ride your bike on the roads in and around campus but that's kind of do at your own risk because the commuter buses can make that kind of scary at times. Your student ID is your best friend so do not leave it in your room or lose it, replacing it is not fun, and be sure to memorise your student ID number as soon as possible. Watch out when the counselor signs you up for first semester because they don't always make sure the commute from one class to another is actually possible and you can find yourself having to make a fifteen minute walk in a ten minute break between classes.

    Anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort to do a good job. Traits that also can help include organization, multitasking and really good studying habits.
