Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot I can honestly say that I have never felt so well taken care of academically. All of the teachers here are dedicated to their job and to the students. They go out of their way to make sure that every student is keeping up with the material. The class sizes are small enough that you become friends with your professor. You get to know them, they get to know you. You form a relationship based not only on learning, but on interaction.
Am enjoying being here I simply love this school. The other students who go here are fun and caring. The classes are interesting. The campus life is abundant. If you need help in any arena, you can find it and there is always someone to talk to if you need an open ear.
Bang for the buck Since it is a private school, it is rather expensive. If you want to go into Business, Nursing, Engineering, Politics, or a related field than this is a great school. However, I wouldn't suggest this school or students on the art-sy side of the spectrum.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in every and any club in which you have an interest. This school is full of oppotunities, people to meet, and places to go, but you have to put in a little of the leg work to network to these groups.
Great for these types of students UP offers a top-notch education if you want to go into Business, Nursing, Engineering, Politics, or a related field.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Most of the professors that I've had are very passionate about the subject they teach which makes it that much easier to learn. I have had a few classes that provide powerpoints ahead of time so note taking is a lot more accurate and efficient.
Am enjoying being here The people here are very friendly. There are various clubs and campus activities that allow you to meet and get to know many people. The volunteer activities are easily accessible and some even take place on campus. This school offers numerous things that allow you to feel at home here; including: movie nights, coffee nights, plays, intramural sports, etc.
Bang for the buck The cost of tuition is quite high. Some classes, biology especially, tend to have 60+ students because there are many students required to take it and not enough professors. They do offer some free events.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to ask question, whether it be to a neighbor, professor, hall director, etc. Joining clubs and other activities help you to meet other people which make living on campus a lot easier. Take advantage of the free events (ex. movies, coffee, field trips, etc.) because youre paying for the steep tuition. Don't be lazy, search for scholarships!
Great for these types of students Anyone.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The academics here are incredible. The professors really do care about their students. I'm a rather shy person but i feel oddly comfortable around these professors. In fact I actually had my spanish teacher recommend the possibility of a major in communications. In this college its all about where you can go with your skills and interests and how the professors can help you get there.
Am enjoying being here Honestly the food is not the most delicious but it is edible and they never run out so who's complaining. On another side the beds are super hard but at least I can place my coffee next to my computer and never worry about spills. What I can say on a positive note is that the students and staff are extremely nice and helpful people. It is a gorgeous campus and students should spend time out doors anyway. Don't stay locked in the dorm, it's depressing. Overall I really do like my temporary home.
Bang for the buck Ok, it is really expensive but the school pays for at least half of it. Apply for scholarships silly people. There is absolutely no way you will get a free ride by doing nothing. Even the people who do get a free ride have to struggle somewhere so get some entries in and save your money. Books cost about $500 per semester.
Tips for prospective students Get a map of Portland and a copy of the bus schedule which can be found on trimet.org. This could save you a lot of time and money. Don't bring all of your clothes because you will never find the time to wash them. Don't sign up for Mehling hall unless you like living with 800 girls. Do explore the campus and meet your professors during office hours. Come prepared with questions. Save your money. Don't go to the mall unless you work there. Don't go to the movies on weekends-the school hosts free movies on weekends for our enjoyment. Do buy a really good mattress pad. Bring towels for the shower and a transportable shower caddy. I find body wash is better than soap because it can go through multiple experiences with your shower. If you bring your bike make sure it has the wheel covers so you can actually use it. Don't leave your bike on break-it will get stolen. E-mail your room mate before you move in. It helps establish better groundwork and get past awkward first meetings. Thats about all I can really say. Oh-read your books! It actually matters now.
Great for these types of students Anyone and everyone. Enjoy your college experience but don't forget to study.

Categories Rating Comments Will learn a lot For a school of only about 3,000 students, the opportunities are endless. A great school for business, engineering, and nursing. What confirmed my enrollment was the vast amount of clubs, study abroad opportunities, and programs offered.
Will enjoy being here I recently came back from my 3rd visit there and the campus just feels like home. When I left campus and the city of Portland I just sank; I felt like I was leaving a part of myself there. The dorms look fantastic. The people here are extremely helpful and care about you, a vibe I didn't receive from other colleges I was accepted to. This university really feels like home.
Bang for the buck It's a private school, so it's going to be expensive. If you keep your grades up and have decent SAT scores you'll get excellent financial aid. There are also a lot of other scholarships and work study opportunities to cut costs. Attending this school is worth it, though.
Tips for prospective students If you are accepted to this university or any other university, visit it. I wasn't very interested after getting accepted. I decided to visit, and I'm extremely glad I did. Getting a first-hand look at the campus will definitely factor in the decision-making process. Also, get involved! With the abundance of opportunities at this school, join a club or play an intramural sport. You'll be glad you did.
Great for these types of students Anyone, really. It is a Catholic school, but anyone can fit in here. I am not Catholic, and I can already guarantee that they will not shove religion down your throat. Get used to rainy/cloudy weather. There is enough to do here for any kind of person.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Every professor that teaches a class has something new to offer, and although some of the classes are the same, teaching styles differ and there's always a style that fits everyone needs. I also learned a lot from my peers and upperclassmen as well. There's a lot of diverse classes offered at UP, so everyone can find something that they would enjoy learning about.
Am enjoying being here I love UP, the environment is amazing, and everyone is inclusive. Even the upperclassmen, so there's nothing wrong with saying hi and starting up a conversation with anyone because once you know it that person is a friend. Although campus is small, there's always something to do whether it's downtown Portland, volunteering locally, playing sports, or just hanging out in the dorm. At first I was hesitant about UP because of how small it is, but I soon came to realize that a small environment allows you to get to know more people and learn more. In class the professors know me by name and I'm not just a number compared to bigger universities. Every professor would like to see their student succeed, so office hours really come in handy when I am confused about a lesson in class. They are all very friendly, helpful, and they won't have their T.A teach a class ever.
Bang for the buck It's a private school, but they offer a lot of scholarships if you apply early. If you play soccer of basketball, then you definitely will get a lot of scholarship offer. Also if you would like to join ROTC, UP is one of the main universities in the area that has it. They a lot for those who are interested in joining.
Tips for prospective students Just come and visit campus during the school year and see for yourself. I would suggest visiting during Weekend on the Bluff during the spring because you get to stay with a current student in their dorm and see what college life is like. You can even stop by during any time and sit in one of the classes.
Great for these types of students This is great for students who want the big city experience, but would like to learn in a smaller environment. Portland is a diverse city the offers a lot and University of Portland is just a couple of minutes away, but campus feels very separate from the city life. UP is a great school for those who would like to discover what they want to do with their future because everyone is willing to help out and guide you on the right path. UP is so diverse that you would end up having friends from all over the nation and different countries around the world. UP's community is warm and inviting that you would run into the same people all over campus, but you would also meet new people as well.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot Not only do the professors show that they care about the students, but they also demonstrate their passion for teaching and the subject that they teach. My first semester has been challenging, but not overwhelming. If I were to feel overwhelmed about absolutely any subject, the professors are always available to help me.
Am enjoying being here I'm a commuter student, so I spend most of my time in the library between classes. The people here are really friendly and easy to get along with. The campus is gorgeous year-round. But at the end of the day, I'm glad I get to go home to my own bedroom and bathroom.
Bang for the buck I believe that the expensiveness is worth it if you want to be a well-rounded student. University of Portland really takes care of you; it feels like a community here. If you want a higher education asides from your undergraduate, the money is well worth it.
Tips for prospective students Go visit the campus for yourself and take advantage of being a student for a day or even spend the night with a current UP student. Being exposed to the campus and classes will give you a feel if UP is the place for you.
Great for these types of students Students who want to academically challenge themselves, but also know when to take a break and have some fun. Anyone who wants a college experience and higher education.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The academics at UP are excellent. Classes challenge you and make you think critically without being completely overwhelming. Small class sizes are also a plus. One of my classes last semester only had about ten students -- creates a nice atmosphere for discussion.
There are also opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. I'm an English major and have an on campus job writing for our newspaper. The English Dept. also sponsors NUCL, a conference where students have the opportunity to present their original papers. Ed majors spend time in local elementary and high schools as a part of their field experience. Some students have internships. If you look around, you will definitely be able to find something to supplement the experience you're getting in the classroom.Am enjoying being here People are friendly, and there are all sorts of on campus activities that you can hang out at with your new friends. Every Saturday the RAs put on Pilots After Dark events. Past activities have included foam parties, art nights, and dances. The dorms do events, too; this past year mine had an international food night and a speed friending event, among other things. CBP organizes dances and coffehouses (last semester we had Meg and Dia!). CBP is also responsible for Espresso UP, which is a weekly hangout with free coffee, tea, and Italian sodas.
All that is just the on campus stuff. Once you venture out into the city of Portland, there are tons of things to do. I won't list them all here, but highlights include Powell's Books, Voodoo Doughnuts, and Saturday Market.Bang for the buck Perhaps one of the downsides to UP is its cost; it is a VERY expensive school. However, it is a wonderful institution of higher learning and very much worth it
Tips for prospective students Visit campus. Attend a few classes and consider spending the night. You need to know that it is a good fit for you.
Great for these types of students We've got a College of Arts and Sciences and Schools of Engineering, Nursing, and Business -- there's a place for practically every student here.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The teachers here are absolutely amazing and genuinely care about YOU and WANT YOU to succeed. Every single teacher that I've had has been willing to meet with me to make sure that I understand the material and has always tried to make sure I feel welcome in their office hours.
Am enjoying being here I love being at this school! Everyone is very welcoming. The campus life is like coming home to a family. Everyone knows everyone and there's always something to do!
Bang for the buck Since this is a private school, it is on the more expensive side. I honestly think it is worth every cent! From the experience to the teachers to the education, it is defiantly worth every dime you have to pay.
Tips for prospective students Get involved early with any and every club that you can. Also keep your room door open during the day if you're in there, people will stop by and say hi and hang our.
Great for these types of students This is a great school if you're considering Business, Nursing, Engineering, Education, or science fields.

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The professors at the University of Portland are commited to teaching their subjects to the best of their abilities. They all love what they do, and bring that enthusiasm to every lecture. Every member of the faculty and staff truly want you to succeed, and will go above and beyond to make sure that happens. All of the classes are relevant to what you want to do with your life, and help you to grow both mentally and emotionally.
Am enjoying being here I love this school! There is always something fun going on whether its a school wide activity, something put on by an organization (such as Outdoor Pursuits), or a dorm activity. You can truly find something that you are interested in. The students and staff of the University of Portland are some of the nicest and friendliest people, and truly make the experience that more special.
Bang for the buck The University of Portland is unique these days in that its Professors actually teach the classes. There are no student teachers, so each time you walk into a class you are getting the very best possible. The university also works very hard with every student to make sure it is financially affordable. Don't let the private school price tag scare you, a majority of the students have scholarships!
Tips for prospective students Study Abroad! I did the year long program to Salzburg, Austria and it was the best experience of my life (and cost me less than if I'd stayed on campus)! The University of Portland encourages all of its students to study abroad and therefore makes it possible for everyone. No matter what your major is you can make it happen!
Great for these types of students The University of Portland is ideal for motivated students who truly want to get the most out of their higher education.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences I have been thrilled with the University of Portland, I could not be happier with my choice. The small size is perfect to foster strong community and good relationships with peers and professors. University of Portland meets my student needs and exceeds my expectations every day.
Tips for prospective students Apply!
Academic Rigor Classes are challenging, but professors work with you because they care about you and want you to succeed.
Dorm Life I have made some of my best friends from living in the dorms.
Food and Dining The food is great for college food. Obviously you get tired of it after awhile, but compared to most schools they have a lot of options and a lot of healthy choices as well.
What to do for fun Portland is a great city to explore and there are always fun things to do on campus as well!
Bang for the buck It is expensive, so thank goodness for scholarships!
Clubs and Activities Lots of ways to get involved!
Campus Safety Campus is very safe, I have never felt uncomfortable or threatened on campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences They have a great, rigorous program however they are lacking in the teaching department. Professors do not always want to help students or look out for their best interest.
Tips for prospective students If you are a strong independent learner without the need of much help from teachers this is a good school. Stay away from History department.
What to do for fun There are many great things to do on campus from intramural sports to the D1 athletics.
Bang for the buck With the amount of money I pay to go their I would have hoped they would have been a little bit more catering to their students.
Greek Life No greek life sorry.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Portland is a great place to meet life longs friends and receive a first class education. The rules and structure can often be smothering and unfair but overall the goal of the school and administration is to help the students in every way that they can. The city is a fun and exciting place to become independent and confident.
Tips for prospective students This is a great school but it is known for its academics and is definitely not a party school. You must be prepared to deal with a fair amount of stupid rules and a slight lack of social activities on campus but if you know how to make your own fun Portland is the best city to do it in. If you enjoy soccer then this is a great school but if you want a very active sports community choose a different college.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor depends on the major but hard work and responsibility is expected from every student. Engineering, nursing and other science majors work very hard for many long hours while business and other majors do not have to work as much. Most everyone is very focused on studying so there is a supportive and encouraging academic environment.
Dorm Life Dorm life can be a lot of fun if you make an effort to get to know the people through out the building and participate in the planned events. The coed and all boys dorms are very fun and active but the all girls dorm should be avoided. Quiet hours and privacy are highly respected.
Food and Dining The food quality is excellent and there is quite a bit of variety. However Bon Appetite is the monopoly on campus and prices are very unreasonable. If you have a meal plan then it is fine but paying on your own is not advisable.
What to do for fun It is really fun to go to the weekly Pilots After Dark events on Saturdays that have fun activities late at night. Downtown is a blast if you like to shop, club, and see shows like cheap stand up comedy. Portland is also a great place to do outdoor activities such as hiking and biking.
Bang for the buck The school is expensive but it is very good about giving large scholarships. The campus is beautiful and the facilities for labs and the like are very nice but most everything else does not seem to live up to the price. There are quite a few extra fees that are unnecessary.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Anchor is a great place to go and have gelatto after dinner or in between classes. The bell tower on campus rings every 15 minutes with really random tunes that are fun to listen to. There is free personal training at the gym, make sure to use it!
Great for these types of students As a hard working student there is a lot of opportunity to grow and be recognized and supported in your studies. The school is making a lot of renovations to make the facilities and programs more valuable for the students.
Clubs and Activities There are lots of choices for clubs ranging from gardening to politics to sports and more. The activities are fun too and include many things such as service opportunities, the arts, crafts, outdoor adventures, competitions and more.
Greek Life There is no Greek life but if boys wants a fraternity feel they should make sure to live in the dorm Villa Maria or Christie Hall.
Campus Safety I always feel very safe on campus. Campus Safety wants to do everything in their power to keep the students safe and comfortable on campus. Each officer is very approachable and friendly around campus.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences great small university.
focus on learning through service.
small classes with a lot of interaction with professors.Tips for prospective students look for opportunities for service and to try new activities.
Academic Rigor challenging classes. however the professors are available to help as does the study center.
Dorm Life bit of overcrowding this fall - most triples are back to doubles spring semester. many are older but schoenfeld is great.
Food and Dining food prices are high and a current point of conversation. they just opened a small store on campus that will take food points which will help.
fred meyer is close - they run a shuttle bus every weekend so bring a refridge and microwave. What to do for fun portland! so between the concerts, etc on campus downtown portland and those activities, are just a bus ride away.
Bang for the buck up is expensive so be sure you want a small campus. take advantage of all the opportunities offered. and get involved
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus wearing purple to the soccer games.
Great for these types of students students who want to be involved with social service activities.
Clubs and Activities very active intermural system so there isn't any reason not to stay in shape while having fun.
rotc for army and air force are very active.Greek Life there is not a greek system at up

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences this school is extremely expensive and is academically demanding. it is also a great community in a great town with professors who really want to see you succeed and will take time out of their day to help you out. while it was not initially my first choice, i'm so exceptionally glad i came to up!
Tips for prospective students go to weekend on the bluff so you can see what life on campus is like and get to know your way around a bit. don't be afraid to ask lots of questions of the students and professors. if you can, sit in on a class or go to a women's soccer game and you'll get a good feel for the academic as well as community aspect of up.
Academic Rigor the courses are tough, especially when you keep piling more and more on your plate. at times i might have three essays due in one day, but the professors will usually allow an extension if you tell them that this is the case. the core courses are really interesting, and the classes related to specific majors are varied and give you a good feel for your future occupation.
Dorm Life i live in mehling which is eight floors of girls. since the campus is about 60% girls and i'm an elementary education major i find that i have little to no interaction with guys outside of a few core courses. other than this, i love the large rooms in mehling, and the bathrooms and showers are cleaned daily which is nice. villa definitely seems like a frat but has great community as does kenna. corrado is really new and nice, and so are fields/schoenfeldt but they are very separated from campus.
Food and Dining there is a lot of healthy options including vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. the food is generally good but there isn't a lot of variation day to day or week to week. there is always a salad bar, a panini area, the grill (burgers, fries, grilled cheese etc.), pizza, pasta, mexican, global (changes weekly), soups (change daily), bakery, and homestyle (changes daily, but same every week). there is also the cove which is mainly to-go, coffee, wraps, and burgers/fries etc. there is also the anchor which has quesadillas, gelato and coffee and a coffee cart in franz which serves coffee, juice and bagels.
What to do for fun every weekend there is a pilots after dark event on saturday nights for those who are looking for alcohol-free fun. these events vary and can be anything from a trip to a mini golf course, a carnival, magicians, and dance parties. there is a lot of hall events and there are also movies shown every friday and saturday that are new and haven't been release on dvd yet. every thursday is cafe procrastinate at villa where free italian soda and coffee is served. there is also plenty to do downtown which is a bus and a max ride away.
Bang for the buck it is very expensive, but the classes are well worth it. up really cares about making sure you are prepared for your career and that you have enough resources to succeed.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus villa has a drum squad that leads a march to major sporting events and is exceptionally loud throughout the games. there is an annual dance called dance of the decades which is off-campus and formal.
Great for these types of students if your are a hard worker and really want to feel prepared for your future vocation, then this is the place for you. don't think you won't like it because it is a catholic school, there are plenty of other religions represented on campus, and a lot of atheists or agnostics as well.
Clubs and Activities there are many academic, athletic and hobby-oriented clubs on campus to choose from. there is also a fair every year to showcase the different options on campus.
Greek Life no greek life, but there are multiple honor societies on campus. villa often seems like a frat (in a good way) though.
Campus Safety public safety is always on campus either on foot or in their cars and there are lots of informational events to help students stay informed an safe. alcohol safety and rape prevention is highlighted.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences this college is great! the college is a small community of generally like-minded students. the professors really invest in the students and are concerned with their well-being and success.
Tips for prospective students apply for financial aid and scholarships: university of portland is not a cheap school!
Academic Rigor the courses (depending on your major) really challenge you to succeed.
Dorm Life dorm communities are really close and are very friendly and safe.
Food and Dining the commons food is pretty good but a little hard on your pockets.
What to do for fun explore the surrounding area! portland has many places to visit and to eat at, and has parks and other things to take a break from work to visit.
Bang for the buck you pay a lot of money to get a quality education and for small class sizes.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences The University of Portland is a great school for those who are looking to complete a basic undergraduate program for specific intended careers. It offers little to enhance a student's prospective philosophically, but challenges a student mainly through coursework. You either hate the University of Portland, or you love it.
Tips for prospective students The University of Portland is an expensive school with relaxed and easygoing people. If you are looking for social, cultural, or academic diversity, you will not find it here. I feel these elements change the way classes are taught because classes are constructed based on the average student, and therefore you cannot get the most you can out of each subject (unless you are studying calculus, or a related subject). So definitely not my money's worth. On the bright side, the campus is lovely, the food is delicious, and you have many resources in terms of a library, computers, etc.
Academic Rigor There is a lot of work at the University of Portland, but I feel that the work does not challenge me conceptually. This varies upon subject, however. A student may feel very challenged in career centered courses related to engineering or nursing.
Dorm Life I am a commuter student, but I believe dorm life is low key for the most part. There are computers available at the end of the halls in each dorm, and food is accessible.
Food and Dining Food is expensive, but I don't think most colleges offer steaks and halibut. The University of Portland has on campus coffee shops and cafes, not including the cafeteria which features a grill, prepackaged food, a sandwich stand, pizza, and various other freshly prepared and healthy cuisine.
What to do for fun There many of the generic clubs and academic clubs on campus, such as Anime Club or Hispanic Club, etc, but nothing extraordinary. These clubs are quite limited. Being a small city, Portland has downtown and a max train to help students get around town, but nothing as you may find in Seattle or San Francisco.
Bang for the buck I would expect more for the price, but the University of Portland is still a great school compared to some state colleges. I would prefer to go to an honors college at a state school, however.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The University of Portland is super bland. Nothing worth mentioning. There's an on campus chapel.
Great for these types of students Career oriented, solely academic.
Clubs and Activities You have to make the most out of your college experience. The University of Portland has some pretty bland clubs and activities.
Greek Life I don't believe there is one...
Campus Safety Campus is very safe.

Categories Rating Comments In three sentences University of Portland is a small private school geared towards students who want to graduate in 4 years. It classes sizes are 25-30, making for a relaxed environment. The teachers want to help students to the best of their ability.
Tips for prospective students Be ready for cold, rainy weather. Do not room with your best friend, it will make you sick of each other. Do not be afraid to speak up in class and go to your teachers for help.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor really depends on the class you take and the teacher you have. From one semester at the school, I have been challenged. If you pay attention, the classes will not be extremely difficult.
Dorm Life There are several dorms on campus. The dorm directors really try to make sure that you can interact with other dorms so you can meet new people. Some dorms have better facilities than others.
Food and Dining The food is good, but it gets repetitive. If you find something you really like, don't get it everyday. Chances are you won't like it after awhile.
What to do for fun For fun, I go into downtown Portland via public transportation to see movies and walk around. Every week there is a new movie shown and there is no fee. There are intramural sports that are fun to participate in.
Bang for the buck Intro classes for sciences can be difficult to get into, but they will allow students if it is absolutely necessary or add another section.
Great for these types of students Students who like small schools and want to get to know their professor better.
Clubs and Activities Many clubs you can participate in ranging from Latin Dance to Club Soccer.
Campus Safety The director of Public Safety cares for the safety of all students. The officers are not out to get people, just to keep them safe,

Categories Rating Comments Am learning a lot The small classroom settings make it possible to have great discussions and communicate with classmates, along with the professor. Professors here are very dedicated to their subject and some provide notes and include power points in lectures, which make learning more engaging. They answer questions and are helpful even outside classroom time. Professors hold what they call office hours and students can either make appointments or walk in if they need help. There are many resources on campus that provided assistance to students with any challenges they might have.
Am enjoying being here I love the campus, with the natural beauty it provides and the friendly people, it is truly an amazing place to live at. The university is located on a bluff so there are amazing views of the city of Portland. There are many things to do on campus such as intramurals, clubs, volunteering and fun events that are free of charge. Although I am a freshman I am secretary for Latin Dance Club. I have a lot of fun learning dance techniques. Recently,I participated in a performance for Diversity Week. As a member of M.E.Ch.A., I am involved in events that promote equality and justice. On the other hand, Chapel choir allows me to share my love of music by singing during mass. I've met great people while being involved in these clubs. With city life only minutes away, UP provides the best of both worlds.
Bang for the buck As a private institution, University of Portland can be expensive. However, there are many scholarship opportunities and financial aid available. These made it possible for me to attend the UP. There is ROTC as well, which can also be a way to pay for school. With its great academic programs and internships, the cost to attend this university is definitely worth it.
Tips for prospective students The first thing you should do is visit campus. I had two tours before coming and they were ultimately what made me choose to apply. It's part of the college experience to get involved and with so many clubs, it's possible to find what interests you! Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to people because everyone is friendly and willing to make conversation. Time flies so make it worthwhile!
Great for these types of students If you are considering Nursing, Engineering, Business or Education, University of Portland is the school to be at. These are the top programs available, however there are others as well. If you want city life but also like a homey place to live at, the campus location provides both!
