    Am learning a lot

I currently a student at VCU returning for my sophomore year and I must say that I am excited to get back to Richmond, VA this fall. As an engineering student I can tell that the education that I am receiving from VCU presents me as well as others attending this diverse university, with a chance to master subject areas even with no prior knowledge of any particular subject area. The past two semesters at VCU I mastered programs such as Microsoft Excel and MatLab that I had no prior knowledge of, but would have eventually needed for the real-world. In addition I learned all of the basics, and then some for the program Solidworks, a staple for a large majority of engineering fields, because of the programs' modeling capabilities.
The professors here are highly trained, well educated professionals as well. Every professor has office hours, and they are willing to assist every student with their work no matter how large the class is. I never had to hesitate to send an email, or call my professor at their office. In addition, the majority of the professors at VCU have Student Instructors at hand in the class room. These SI's hold their own individual free tutoring sessions at flexible times throughout the semester. I was able to get great help for my chemistry course thanks to my professors SI. Attend VCU, and I assure you that you will receive a high quality education.

    Am enjoying being here

The VCU campus is an inner-city melting pot. I definitely fit in as a minority student. I am surrounded by friends, and students who are truly dedicated to succeeding. The positive atmosphere leaves me with nothing but satisfaction once I step foot onto campus, but there is no place like home.

    Bang for the buck

With all of the great education that I am receiving from this institution, I have no doubt that I am definitely receiving my money's worth in that department. With that said, VCU could have a much improved dining plan, and selection, and the campus could be a little more closed off, and cleaner. I can not complain though.

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise all prospective students looking at any university to start early, even as early as their Junior year of highscool if possible. For anyone attending this university I would advise you to go to your counselor or your professors if you have any types of questions about the school. Most of the professors are more than willing to assist you with troubles. I would also advise students to attend SI sessions, because they are extremely helpful and beneficial to you.

I don't have to tell you that VCU is quite a large university. Especially within the first few years here, most of one's classes will be larger lecture classes. Even so, all the professors I've had have let it be known to the students that they're open for individual consulting as long the student is willing to make it happen.

Like at any university, a VCU student will realize how to learn based mostly on their own capabilities. The professors will provide you with a firm foundation of the material but ultimately, it's in the students hands how far to excel with the material. What I love about the professors at VCU is that they are still there for students, despite the enormity of some of the classes.

    Am enjoying being here

I honestly didn't want to come to VCU initially. I was unsure about the urban environment of the campus and the way it was integrated with the Richmond city. I got no sense of being on a traditional campus at all.

When finally got to school though, all my prior assumptions were proven wrong. VCU is a unique campus where you get a diversity that I don't believe you can get at any other university in VA. Richmond is a city that is hard not to love. Trust me, when you're here, you'll develop a deep love for VCU and the city that holds it.

    Bang for the buck

For a public university, VCU's tuition is very reasonable. Take into account the kind of extensive research facilities available to VCU students and the tuition seems like an even bigger deal. If anything though, the dining hall food is um, somewhat under par.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't judge a book by its cover. VCU is truly a diamond in the rough. Also, take advantage of the fact that you're in a real city, not some college town that only exists because of the college. There is SO much to do in Richmond!

    Am learning a lot

I am currently a freshman at VCU, I actually have my finals for this semester starting this week. This semester, as my first semester ever of college, has been very educational. As this is VCU, it is a very diverse campus and creates a huge area where you can learn about different cultures and people. As well as those who love to voice their opinions in the compass.
The teachers are really down to earth, especially the Focused Inquiry teachers, which is a class you have to take your freshman year, if you do not already have English credits. Those classes will really help you adjust and learn everything you can, and be able to think deeply about it.

    Am enjoying being here

The area is so much fun! I am living in one of the dorms on campus, and if you decided that dorm life isn't for you, it's okay. However, it is much easier to live here and go to the midnight breakfasts in Safer Court Dining Center. Or to participate in the Ram Ex-Scream at 9:00PM, when all you have to do is cut through an ally (that's well lit) and you're there.

    Bang for the buck

Welcome to college, and loans, loans, and more loans. College is not cheap, but wouldn't you want to be paying for a good education? You are here. Plus, in state tuition isn't very expensive here. The really expensive thing is the dining plans. Something that is NOT optional if you live in the dorms.

    Tips for prospective students

Get the cheap dining plan, you'll never be able to use all 200 swipes in a semester and use your dining dollars. Buy your textbooks from VBC, but sell them back to Barns and Nobel. They're cheaper at VBC, and you get more money back at B&N.

Great for these types of students

If you are very open minded, are not homophobic, and are not racist, VCU is the perfect open minded, open belief college for you!

Like any college, it forces you to learn how to study, which is hard when there are so many distractions! Nothing is spoon-fed to you, but the professors are very accessible and whenever you feel like you need help, they are there to help. They also really want you to learn, and they will push you. Like the other reviews said, there are a lot of extra support if you feel a little lost-- the school offers free one-on-one tutoring, drop-in tutoring, and SI sessions.

    Am enjoying being here

My parents used to be (very) nervous about sending me to such a large, open campus in a city, but they worry for nothing! It's not that bad, but of course you have to be city-smart and realize why its not to smart to walk by yourself in the middle of the night. VCU has their own police, and there always out and about. The dorms have good security with guards at the front desk, and require card access to get in.
Besides that, city life is great, you will never get bored as there are a ton of activities to do for anyone and everyone! You'll meet so many different types of people, and everyone is really friendly.

    Bang for the buck

One of the reasons why I chose to come here was because of the in-state tuition. With that said, it's not terribly expensive for a public school, and your bill includes activities that help the school help the students (for example, you can get the flu shot or visit the nurse's office for free at Student Health).

    Tips for prospective students

www.ratemyprofessor.com or other sites of the like are SO HELPFUL in picking out your classes for your first semester!! I'm telling you!! If the reviews on the site say the professor is hard and will ruin your life, run away! or just ask around with people who've taken them before.

Great for these types of students

If you're a student interested in the health field, VCU is a jewel! There are many research programs (ex. Massey Cancer Center, just 1 out of 65 cancer centers), and graduate programs for students (medical, nursing, pharmacy, etc..). VCU's Medical School is the best of the best--and I was fortunate enough to rub elbows with their medical students and some members on the Board of Admissions. You can also conveniently volunteer at their very own hospital on the MCV campus to gain more experience, or start shadowing the doctors there.
Even though I'm currently an undergraduate freshman at VCU, I find these resources very important and unique--I would not have the benefit of all these places so easily at the reach of my fingertips as I do here. I've already volunteered at the hospital, and networked with graduate students in these health fields, and they've given me a lot of valuable advice in making the most of my undergraduate years.

It's true that Virginia Commonwealth University may not be known for its academic potential, but the lack of praise for this school is misleading to all prospective students. Professors are always willing and able to help you inside and outside of class. If you ever feel uncomfortable, or for what ever reason, are unable to seek help from your professor, VCU offers countless resources. First of all, there are plenty of ads for tutors and all over the school, and your professor can often times lead you to a student who is doing well in the class and can help you. The tutoring center offers walk-in and scheduled tutoring for all students at all times of the day. There are also Supplemental Instruction Leaders for certain classes that hold review sessions outside of class likewise with Teaching Assistants. VCU makes it so that if you want to learn, you are presented with every opportunity to do so.

    Am enjoying being here

I completely love being at Virginia Commonwealth University. Everyone is so friendly and different. There are many universities out there that seem to only have a certain set of people and are isolated from anything different. But that is not what the real world is like. In the real world, you meet people that are not like you who may believe in completely different ideas, but you adapt and do your best to get along with each of them. That is one of the biggest reasons I love VCU, everyone is different, and we're OK with that.

Ask for the other more college life type things: there are plenty of great options for food. On campus housing is the best I've ever seen, especially for honors students. The university is designed uniquely in a bustling city, how could it not be exciting?

    Bang for the buck

I mean if it's a place that allows you to understand how to live in the real world and understand that people are different, while still offering you every opportunity to learn, how can it not be a great bang for the buck?

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus! People jump to conclusions that it's a city and are scared. It's not scary. Security is tight and the different between on and off campus is clear. Give it a chance and you'll love it!

I definitely have learned a lot since I have been at VCU. Both of my studio classes have been challenging. Time Studio was the most challenging as I had little experience in this discipline prior to this class. However, I now feel more adept at movie making , with its editing and computer manipulations. Surface was the more familiar of the two since there was a lot of drawing involved. Rhetoric was my least favorite, as writing has always been more difficult for me than other academic things. However, after writing an in-depth research paper, I feel that my writing skills have immensely improved over what they were previously.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love it here at VCU! As a freshman art student, I cannot think of any other college where I would want to be. I really feel that I have found my calling in life and the School of the Arts is helping me to reach my potential. I especially loved my Honors Art Worlds course this past semester. Not only did we have class at many of the museums in Richmond, but we also went to New York City one weekend and took in several of the museums there. One of my favorites was the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's such a feeling of awe and inspiration to be surrounded by the actual works of the great masters and the other talented artists whose works are on display there

    Bang for the buck

VCU School of the Arts is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as both the 1st public college art program and the 4th overall in the United States. Since being here, I certainly see why. However, it is still one of the cheapest ones around. VCU's art program has challenged me more than even my AP art class did. I like the curriculum here, too. During freshman year all potential art majors are in Art Foundation and start off running. This semester I had two studio classes, an art projects class, an art history class, and another honors art class. Next semester will again be two studio classes, one art projects class, and an art history class. In March of freshman year we then declare our top three choices for our art concentration. By exposing students to this much art as freshman, we can better see where our interests and strengths lie. By the end of Spring Semester freshman year, we then know in which discipline we will be placed, determining which specific curriculum we will pursue for the rest of our time at VCU. This makes a lot of sense to me, as art is a field in which a person must be passionate and really like what he is doing. The toughness of the curriculum early on allows students to see if this is what one really want to do for the rest of his life. If not, then the switch to another major can be made early in the college career. Since VCU is a large university of over 32,000 students, it offers a wide variety of activities. Finally, with Richmond as one of the cultural centers of Virginia, something happens there all of the time. In short, VCU and Richmond: something for everybody! Just look!

    Tips for prospective students

Get your application in as early as possible, especially if you want to be considered for VCU scholarships. On their website, it lists what the average credentials were for past scholarship recipients. If you fall within these ranges, you probably have a good shot at receiving one of them. Also, visit campus your senior year. I went twice. Once was to meet and talk with an art professor, getting both his suggestions for improvements to my portfolio and his first hand information about the School of the Arts and its programs. That trip I also toured the VCU campus, took the art department tour, and met and talked to students, getting their views on both VCU overall and the art program specifically. The second trip was to one of VCU's prospective student weekends where we even spent the night in one of the dorms. These two trips thus allowed me to choose VCU with my eyes wide open. If you are qualified, check out the Honors College. Although there are many perks given to its students, to me the best one is the fact that you get to register for classes before anybody else. This increases your odds of getting the classes and the specific sections that you want. If admitted to Honors College, be sure to schedule your over the summer required phone conference with your honors advisor as soon as possible. The earlier you are, the earlier your advisor can register you for your honors classes, and the greater the chance of getting them at the times that you would like.

    Am learning a lot

Though this is my first semester here at VCU, I am enjoying the classes in which I am enrolled in. Some of the classes I am taking are general education classes that I must take and others are prerequisites for my major. I am always open to learning new material because that is how a person acquires knowledge. If I was not open minded then I would not enjoy my classes and I probably would not do so well in my classes as well. The teachers here are exceptional, so far, and have made sure to show their students that they are here to help, even after class hours.

    Am enjoying being here

I originally applied to both JMU and VCU but VCU was my first choice. I decided that I wanted the chance to live in the city for a change since my hometown is fairly small. The diversity at this college, and in this city, is phenomenal. The people as well as the character of the city are definitely one of a kind. Being here in Richmond and at VCU gives me a new adventure everyday because there are so many things to explore and so much history to take in.

    Bang for the buck

The city is great and the school is awesome but sometimes I wish the tuition was not so high. Also, the cost of living in Richmond is a little pricey. This is why I chose to live off campus and not downtown. However, there are so many things to do in the city as well as at VCU. Richmond holds a variety of festivals, there are always concert events, the restaurant choices are endless and the clubs never let me down. VCU offers a large amount of organizations, free activities and events, free access to the gym with your VCU id card, even library access until after midnight! Free movie showings almost every weekend is definitely a plus, too. There is never a day that something is NOT going on. Being a student here at VCU will not let you down because there are so many activities and events you can involve yourself in.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are on a tight budget and do not want to live on campus, I suggest you find an apartment or townhouse on the outskirts of the city. I live about 2 miles away from VCU but it is just far enough that it does not count as living downtown. It is much cheaper and the apartments are much nicer. Rent, rent, rent! Renting your books at VCU's Barnes and Noble is a big way to save money. If you know what books you need right from the start then do not wait to get them or they will be gone. Even the used books go fast so get there as soon as you can. Also, take advantage of the events and activities that both the city and VCU has to offer. Do not be afraid to try new things here, this city is great for new opportunities. Lastly, BE CAREFUL! Even the friendliest looking areas can be dangerous. Always lock your car doors, be aware of your surroundings, and try not to go anywhere alone, especially at night.

Great for these types of students

VCU is a great school for people who want to outwardly express themselves. This school is for people who want to experience new things, meet a variety of people, and who want to have a good time while they are in school. However, this school is for anyone and everyone. VCU does not discriminate, so if you are the judgmental type, this school may not be for you.

I am currently a second semester VCU sophomore and am enjoying every minute of it. There is so much here at VCU, I am constantly learning about the institution, students, and from professors. The diversity itself is like another class. It is embraced by VCU and I've been exposed to various cultures and religions. Meeting different people from various states and countries who are as open to meet people.

    Am enjoying being here

I definitely enjoy the environment because it is different from most other colleges. The school itself is located at the heart of Richmond and there is always something fun to do. The institution being so diverse, always has events going on and there are plenty of places to visit. Basketball games are a big part of VCU as well and they are a great way to enjoy time with friends and show school spirit. The atmosphere with all the students are welcoming. I feel as if everyone is trying to get to know each other, because everyone is always open.

    Bang for the buck

I believe that this institution is worth the money. The chance to go to college is one thing, but the additional bonuses that I notice when coming to VCU makes it even better. The classroom seats are definitely comfortable as well.

    Tips for prospective students

One thing I strongly suggest is to join clubs and apply for any programs even before coming to VCU. Clubs will definitely help you with networking and learning more about the organization that you join. The people that you meet in the organization will most likely have the same interest as you. This was a great way for me to meet people during freshman year and get to do the things I liked to do as well. Clubs are also great for different opportunities like working with admissions to planning events at school. Joining programs are a great way to advance in the career you are pursuing. You might have the chance to meet students who are on the same track. There are definitely opportunities if you join a program before you enter school.

Since i have been here i have learned a lot. Being an art major everything is hands on and you are given the opportunity to advance your skills in many ways. I have learned skills academically as well as artistically, though mainly artistically.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here. Being in a totally new environment makes the experience greater. I'm glad at the choice i made, and I'm happy that I enrolled here. The administration is great, and very helpful with any problems, from financially to academically. Security looks out for our safety making it easy and safe to travel to and from campus.

    Bang for the buck

It is more than a bang for the buck. Although out of state tuition is expensive, the price is nothing compared to other art schools. It is well worth it, and i recommend it to any one.

    Tips for prospective students

If anyone is looking to attend this school, you will love it hear, trust me. It is worth the distance, the price, and most of all the experience. I am glad for the choice i made, and if I could re do it all over again, I would've made it my first choice.

    Am learning a lot

This is currently my third year here at VCU. The first thing you will learn about VCU is that the school is intertwined with the city of Richmond. Which means you have the freedom of both being a student while living within a city, on your own. With that said if you want more of a college campus school spirit experience, you probably won't find that here. Since it is a expanding university it's only getting better.

As, for the school and the professors, they are qualified. If you are going into the art school you should know that every teacher, is a working artist on the side, and that is a requirement for all teachers in the art departments. It's also nice to know that the teachers aren't there just to teach and be critical of students work without them doing work themselves.

    Am enjoying being here

I personally love VCU, based on that I love Richmond. Richmond is full of personality. If you are looking to go into the art school, this is the best place in Virginia because of the art culture. If you are a foodie you will love the small local restaurants that are all over the city. If you're into music there are many different venues that hold bands each week. There is always something going on and you won't get bored.

    Bang for the buck

Different people will tell you different things about each major here at VCU and from what I know about the arts college, we have some of the best student work coming out of the university in the country (VCU is ranked #1 public university and #4 over all in the entire country according to U.S. News and World Report) This makes it the best bang for your buck, generally speaking.

    Tips for prospective students

I think my best tip for incoming freshmen, is live in a dorm your first year. Not only will you meet people that will become your friends throughout college but it gives you that college campus-y experience, that I find VCU lacks in some ways.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for students who are interested in city living, don't care whether there is school spirit or not and who love being around many different types of people.

    Will learn a lot

After visiting VCU the first few times, I felt like I still needed some more info on the schools abilities. After orientation however, I can comfortably say I'm going to get a good education here. The way the freshmen experience is designed revolves around acclimating students to the college experience, building fundamental skills that will see us through the next four years. The only reason I won't give a five star for this category is because I still need to find out first hand when classes start in August.

    Will enjoy being here

Despite the negative perceptions around the city of Richmond, there's many cool places to go and things do - the only reason Richmond has a bad rep is because it's a city. All cities have crime, but that shouldn't detract from the whole experience. I have also found the faculty to be quite helpful and involved with the students, answering my emails in a timely fashion and giving me good advice. Orientation also introduced me to some of the people I'll be attending VCU with. They were quite friendly and all around good people.

    Bang for the buck

Although the final bill seems a tad steep, it could a lot worse and does have better affordability in comparison to a lot of other colleges. In addition, the school is undergoing many renovations and expansions, so many more features are coming to VCU which will greatly improve the learning and living experience there. Now will costs go up? Time will tell, but as it stands, VCU is a great college, so of course a big bill is involved, but side by side with other schools it does have more affordability.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Ask questions, the payoff is invaluable.
    2. If a desired course is full - don't give up! Ask your advisor if any openings will become available.
    3. Bring a bike.
    4. VCU is in a city, so be safe. The campus also has many services to help you stay out of trouble, too.
    5. Be active in and out of the class. Extracurricular activities are quite important to VCU.
    6. Apply for scholarships, and make sure your FAFSA is done ASAP.
    7. Apply for housing as soon as it's available.

I am currently studying fashion merchandising. If you are hoping to pursue a career in fashion but do not want to start out in NYC or another big city this school is for you. The teachers are amazing and have a wealth of knowledge on your future career in fashion.

    Am enjoying being here

Richmond, VA is not a very exciting place if you are used to living in a big city. This town is very historical, vegan-friendly, and quaint. If you enjoy music, the music scene here is pretty awesome (lots of house shows). Also, coffee shops and little boutiques are abundant. You can find stuff to do around campus, but if you don't have a car it will get boring pretty fast. Luckily, D.C. is an 1.5 hour bus ride away, and you can take a quick bus ride to NYC for around $60 round-trip!

    Bang for the buck

Unless you are paying in-state tuition this place is expensive! I came here thinking I would be able to get in-state tuition after establishing residency, but VA laws are really tough on residency. Therefore, it is pretty expensive for out of state people like me.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't eat at Shafer (the cafeteria) too much, the food there tends to be pretty unhealthy, although there usually is a wide variety to choose from. Also, learn the bus system pretty quickly if you don't have a car, because the downtown area and places away from campus can be pretty cool. Belle Isle is an island about 10 minutes from campus and is an awesome place to hang out at on hot summer days. Lastly, the campus as a whole is really diverse and there's tons of clubs to get involved in and meet people!

Great for these types of students

If you are a vegan, or you enjoy historical towns, you will fit right into Richmond, Virginia. The school is extremely diverse, so all types of students can find people they relate to. VCU Arts department is awesome, so if you are pursuing a career in the arts, this school is for you!

I enjoy VCU for the wide range of classes that they provide. They have a great Psychology program. The professors are outstanding.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy going to VCU because it is close to my house, and it truly is the best college in my area.

    Bang for the buck

I do know that VCU's tuition rates are cheaper than most colleges, which is great for those of us who really struggle trying to pay our college bills.

    Tips for prospective students

When going into college, pay attention in class and whatever you do, don't procrastinate. It will catch up to you, even if it is not until your senior year.

    Am learning a lot

I am a current VCU freshmen going in my second Semester. I came to VCU expecting to learn a great deal but not like this. I figured I would have to learn to live on my own and manage myself. Of course at first the transitioning was pretty hard but with the guidance I received from my peers and even residents of Richmond I was able develop more of Independence. I learned to embrace the city and the people of it. I've learned how to become more sociable and outspoken because of so many great people that make this university, VCU.

    Am enjoying being here

I have to say I love it here. The city, the people, the freedom, and the safe atmosphere. I know many people say Richmond is a dangerous place and there are strange people but to be completely honest I have to say I feel completely safe. I haven't been really bothered or frightened. There are plenty of police sirens but 9 times out of 10 those are for drivers not following the rules of the road. Besides that, the people here are amazing. I love how diverse it is, it gives you a chance to learn about others and their cultures. Also I have easily made great friends within my first few weeks of attending school. Last but not least is all the dining locations we have access to with our meal plans. It ranges from subway to chik-fil-a to pizza hut and so on mmmm yum!!!

    Bang for the buck

VCU does give you the Bang for your buck. The classes challenge you and with the resources we have like the University College, its where you can get free tutoring, help with writing, and any other educational problem you have, you receive all that.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for prospective students would be,
    1. Stay focused, being in the city of Richmond could seem scary but its not just relax settle down and take time to get use to things.
    2. Adjusting your old habits should start as soon as you get here or even before you get here, you need to manage your time wisely and become more responsible
    3. VCU is a tremendous school and you are very fortunate to be able to attend this beautiful university so take advantage of it
    4. Last but not least enjoy coming here and don't try to party too much
    And those are my tips.

    Will learn a lot

Looks like they have an up and coming business school. I like the HR degree. Looks like a good mix of business classes (about 1/3 to 1/2 of what an MBA takes) with a heavy HR focus and even one required course in the public administration school.

    Will enjoy being here

Not sure. I recently visited Richmond and did not like what I saw. Then again, I was sick the whole time and it was a rushed visit. I'm willing to give it another try. Plus, I do look forward to the benefits of the college, especially the theater events.

    Bang for the buck

Pretty good, though I'd be out of state at first and that really sucks. GA really doesn't offer a program like the one I'm looking at with VCU. The closest would be GSU's MBA with an HR emphasis, but it is far less classes in HR than VCU offers. Not really what I'm looking for. If I could get an assistantship with in state rates my first semester that would be great. Otherwise, hmm...we'll see.

    Tips for prospective students

I am concerned that several reviewers have mentioned they do not feel safe at night. As I am looking into applying for a master's program where pretty much all my classes would be at night, obviously, for me walking around campus at night is going to be unavoidable. I grew up in a small town so I'm not used to big cities. Hence, I'm not really what you would call 'street-wise.' Is it really going to be a problem or major concern that I'll have night classes? Should I just expect all the students will park in the same area and all walk out together? I'm not typically in the 'in-group,' but if I have to, I'll be as friendly as I can. Any suggestions/advice are most welcome.

Great for these types of students

Good bargain for those already living in VA, from what I can tell at least.

I'm in the Art Foundation program, so I'm learning more about art than I ever knew was possible. Every project involves new mediums and methods, and problems that I have to solve while still yielding a visually pleasing result.

    Am enjoying being here

It's a lot of work, but if you're dedicated, it is fantastic. I also love Richmond and the variety of things available for me to do off campus. Since it's not a campus in the middle of nowhere, there are things to do aside from partying on the weekends. But, if you're into partying, you can always find one. Academic wise, the classes are great, and every professor I had was more than willing to help outside of class.

    Bang for the buck

VCU is very affordable, and for the quality of education it offers I think it is a wonderful opportunity.

    Tips for prospective students

Get more dining dollars than swipes on your meal plan, I guarantee you'll want food from Subway or Chickfila more than food from the dining halls! Start studying for major tests more than a week before they happen. Do not walk around by yourself at night if you're going off campus. If you're dorm room is on the smaller side, keep it clean! Don't go to Starbucks more than once a day (it is so tempting). Write down how much money you're spending so you never spend too much. Go to the gym, it's awesome!

Great for these types of students

VCU is great for art students (whether visual or performing), medical students, engineering students, and students who love the city vibe.

    Am learning a lot

My time at Virginia Commonwealth University during my first semester has been a spectrum of excitement, introduction, and action taking. There have been plenty of times where my prior knowledge and experience served me well and other times where I have had to adapt, adhere, and adjust to what I was presented with quickly. I have found that while I’m excelling in courses geared toward my career interest, it is the material that I have come across in my learn leisure reading that I have enjoyed the most this semester.

    Am enjoying being here

It was most obvious while in the college application process during my senior year of high school, that the fact that most of Virginia Commonwealth Univeristy’s campus and student life is immersed in the inner city precedes itself in Virginia Commonwealth Univeristy’s overall reputation when described to high seniors interested in attending has tremendous influence in shaping the opinion students prior to visiting the city. Although I would consider myself to be thrown in the same boat when applying to colleges (despite being a legacy); I have found that Virginia Commonwealth University has grow on me and the city is tiring it is also interesting and I have grown to love the supporting area of Richmond around Virginia Commonwealth University.

    Bang for the buck

I would have to say while most of my high school friends tell me that they have saved a nice sum of money by shopping online for textbooks I found that stores like Virginia Book Company and Book Holders are excellent low price sources for textbooks on campus. While the staff at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Dining services are warm-hearted and committed to the student community, they’re commitment does not make up for the quality of food being served and they’re ability to service the community. With that said, I believe that Virginia Commonwealth University while having one of the largest Undergraduate populations in the state of VA very much needs another dining hall. Even though the Shafer Dining Hall may not always be serving something appetizing the local restaurants and shops surround the main campus provide plenty quality and efficiently priced dining options to choose from.

    Tips for prospective students

If there is any doubt that you cannot handle over 16 credits that I would suggest that you just stick to 16-12 credits (which is still full time) and when you talk to your academic advisor make sure that you sign up for 17-19 credits that way you have choices when the semester starts in case you need to drop a course to better handle your course load. I would also have to stress that while it is important to visit every college that you have applied to and consider attending it vital that you visit Virginia Commonwealth University before comparing with other colleges located in rural settings.

Great for these types of students

For Art, Medical, Engineering and Political Science Majors and students who prepared interact and network in one of the most diverse campuses in VA.

Seeing how it was my first year of college last semester I expected to do horrible in class because I'd be too busy enjoying the college night-life; that wasn't the case at all. I found the classes very interesting and they gave plenty of opportunities to receive extra credit. My academic counselor also helped a lot. She reminded me of due dates and also contacted me on a personal level to make sure all was well when she saw I hadn't registered for classes when I said I would.

    Am enjoying being here

The night-life as well as classes provide a great combination of work and play.

    Bang for the buck

I was pretty upset when I found out my meal swipes and money on my student card don't carry into the next semester. I found myself eating 7-10 times a day during the last two weeks just so I wouldn't waste them.

    Tips for prospective students

Even if a class seems easy don't slack! Once you do that you start becoming lazy and procrastinating. Also do any extra credit possible!

Great for these types of students

Unsure or hesitant students. A academic counselor stays with you 100% of the time to make certain you don't feel pressured to rush into a major and at the same time helps your realizes options you never thought of.

Coming to Virginia Commonwealth University has to one of the best decisions I've made in my life. It's a great school filled with great people in a great environment. I recommend everyone to come here.

    Tips for prospective students

Getting ready to study your hardest. VCU has the toughest professors who grade the hardest. If you're up for the challenge come on down.

    Academic Rigor

I loved all my professors so far! They are very outgoing and very approachable.

    Dorm Life

I live at Cabaniss Hall and to be honest as much as people down talk it, it's really not that bad... Well except for having to take the bus every day. But despite Cabaniss, all the other dorm are pretty nice and very secure.

    Food and Dining

The food is AMAZING... enough said.

    What to do for fun

There's a lot to do in downtown Richmond. For one, our basketball games are always on point and they are a lot of fun. Other than that you can go to the movies, go partying, or just chill and meet new people.

    Bang for the buck

You will be definitely getting your money's worth over here

Great for these types of students

Everyone is welcome, we don't discriminate.

    Clubs and Activities

VCU has a lot of clubs and activities to the point that everyone belongs to something.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is not as great as it should be. But most of the crimes that happen here are robberies. Just be aware of your surroundings.

Virginia Commonwealth University is the most dedicated school in Virginia when it comes to education for the average student. VCU is unified by its incredibly diverse and innovating student body and staff. Without a doubt, VCU is changing the lives of many by accepting the fact that everyone really wants to succeed or is trying to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

VCU is for the student that wants to live in a urbanized and diverse environment, but at the same time have the traditional college campus experience. There's a best friend for everyone when you attend this school as every student here has open minds, and open arms. The advising program at the University College will definitely guide any prospective towards goals that they did not even know existed.

    Academic Rigor

Teachers here are determined to help any student that is willing to learn and earn good or great grades. The students that attend must have a great work ethic as distractions can sometimes be overbearing. But overall the teachers and staff at VCU are willing to help.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. Living with students that are in the same situation as you help build friendships quick. Dorm life is like a big party at VCU, or a big study group.

    Food and Dining

There's so much FOOD at VCU with the dining plan that VCU offers for freshman. You have tons of swipes that would swipe you into Shafer (All you can eat buffet) or to restaurants like Chik-fil-a, Subway, or IHOP. There's also Dining Dollars or RAMBUCKS that let you buy off-the-swipe-menu food at Chili's or late night IHOP menu. But there are over 20 places where you can eat at VCU the dining plan.

    What to do for fun

Belle Isle, Maymont Park, Carytown, Concerts at The National, Trying out all of the restaurants, and so much more.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs at VCU, the SOVO fair at the beginning of each semester will introduce new students to many different types of clubs for any culture, hobby, etc.

    Greek Life

Greek life is in full bloom at VCU. Full of Pride.

VCU is spread out over a large are; however, there is much to do both on and off campus from the gym and all of the activities you can do there to the different dorms and the river where you can go with friends when you're out of class. The class sizes here are large when you are taking the university-required classes, but as you pick your major the class sizes get smaller and some class, such as math and English have a very small class size. The thing I most enjoy about the school is the fact that there was always something going on or something to do, even if it was only going to hang out with my friends any time I wasn’t in class I could always find something to occupy myself.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to all events during welcome week and meet people this will serve to expand your group of friends throughout the year. Join an organization such as greek life or any other group it will also expand your circle of friends. This will make your experience at VCU much better. Also make sure to take advantage of the amazing gym and the classes that are offered there its a good way to stay in shape, get big, or a place to go with friends for pick up games.

    Academic Rigor

The classes themselves weren't to difficult; however, I have had some difficulties with my professors posting that I failed my final because they said I hadn't taken it when I did. I resolved the issues but it caused me quite a lot of stress.

    Dorm Life

I loved my dorm Brant Hall lets you have many different room mates not just one or two. There are four rooms connected by one common-room. Each room has two people in it. Make sure to take advantage of the common-room space do this by putting a tv out there or by making sure that you do things with all of your room mates. They can help you with homework as well.

    Food and Dining

There are a variety of different places to eat on campus with a wide variety of menu items. Explore the campus and you will find more places that you didn't know were on your dining plan such as the Chilis or Starbucks. Shafer is the main dining hall and all of the food there is pretty good but the desserts are amazing especially when you get a fresh batch of anything.

    What to do for fun

Belle Isle and the gym are a few places to meet up with friends and have fun. There is also the commons with food places as well as a pool hall in the basement and a movie theatre on the weekends.

    Bang for the buck

VCU is in the $20,000 range if you are living on campus and paying in state tuition. Here you can experience the whole college experience for a modest price however the greek life lacks the housing it need for large mansions so the parties here are smaller but there are more of them.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I didn't really encounter many traditions here as I am just a freshman, but a good location to go just off campus is Belle Isle if its a nice day.

Great for these types of students

Art students have a large community here as VCU is the top public art school in the country. However the school of business is expanding as well as the engineering department. VCU is a very diverse school in both the people who attend as well as the programs offered.

    Clubs and Activities

Could always find something to do though I never went to any clubs I was always at house parties on the weekend there are some clubs in the bottom( an area of Richmond) which a bus will take you to so you don't have to drive. During the day if it is nice a trip to Belle Isle is usually a great way to spend your time.

    Greek Life

VCU has one of the fastest growing Greek Life populations which make the weekends a lot of fun and rush week very exciting.

    Campus Safety

With the campus having its own police force as well as the ability to call for a ride from the police from anywhere on campus to anywhere else on campus I never felt unsafe here. That being said there are some bad areas around the school that you want to be in a group to go through.

Virginia Commonwealth University is the most diverse, eventful and life-changing university. VCU is a beautiful school filled with beautiful people. I couldn't have imagined going anywhere else, VCU is my perfect fit.

    Tips for prospective students

As long as you figure out how to balance your busy schedules, things fall into place. Make sure to attend class and actually be aware of your surroundings. If you can figure out your study habits first semester, things will be a lot easier for you in the future.

    Academic Rigor

Virginia Commonwealth University is challenging and will continue to make you work for your future.

    Dorm Life

I personally live in the only freshman dorm that is location on VCU's Medical Center Campus and the only downfall to this is that I have to commute to my classes. Otherwise, the dorms are great. The people are phenomenal and the residential assistants are so amazing. I'll never forget the people I've met here.

    Food and Dining

Virginia Commonwealth University has some delicious food. Whether you're snacking on something from Shafer dining court, or whether you rode the bus over to Jonas - you'll never be disappointed.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous activities that are always available for students around VCU. There is always something going on around campus, as well as around campus. My personal favorite is to go to the beautiful river and enjoy the sun.

    Bang for the buck

While VCU can be a little pricey for some people, they offer a lot of scholarships and grants. Apply for as many scholarships as you can and you'll be surprised. It's worth all the time to try to get the money.

You never really know what to expect from VCU since it's so diverse. It honestly just depends on the day. You might even run into a camel just hanging out on the lawn of campus during the VCU Qatar festival.

Great for these types of students

Since VCU is so diverse, it has countless events for everyone to get involved in.

    Clubs and Activities

VCU has an overwhelming amount of clubs, if you don't like any of them - all you have to do is find five people, write a constitution, and get it approved. Then, you've created a new club. There is certainly something for everyone.

    Greek Life

I personally am not involved in Greek Life, but my friends who are completely adore it. It's a great idea, I'm just trying to balance out everything else before I get into an organization like that.

    Campus Safety

Although Richmond has a dangerous reputation, VCU does a great job at making you feel secure on and around campus. As long as you don't travel alone, things are always okay.

I know Richmond can be scary, but I've never felt unsafe or threatened anywhere on campus. Don't be afraid to explore and talk to everyone and go everywhere! You never know what treasures you may find.

    Tips for prospective students

Time management, especially for those art majors. You're going to think that sleep's just a dream, but if you get off Facebook for a couple hours, you'll find that sleep's actually quite manageable.

    Academic Rigor

I'm in the School of the Arts. The first year visual art department is basically set up to weed people who think they're interested in art, but aren't really, out. Don't be discouraged though. Sleep's manageable, even when you have three or four huge projects due at once. Trust me, I did it.

    Dorm Life

They're located right on a busy intersection. You'll turn into a fairly heavy sleeper soon enough. Community bathrooms in Johnson are eh, most people have problems because one person's term of clean is another person's nightmare. There is a sense of community with each floor though. It's okay, good for a freshman not quite ready to leave the feeling of family and no privacy behind.

    Food and Dining

Shaffer is. . . okay for the first semester. By semester two, you're a little tired of the same thing every day. It's nice for vegetarians though (has a lot of options) and can get busy sometimes. You'll definitely be missing home cooked meals soon though.

    What to do for fun

Whew, anything. VCU sends out a TelegRam out with things that happen on campus that are funded by the different clubs and associations. There are posters and people handing out things on every street corner. There's also just people to talk to and to learn about. They'll tell you interesting places to go as well. The river's only a mile away, and I've heard it's a gorgeous place to spend a Spring day.

    Campus Safety

I've never felt threatened or anything. Yes, it's in the middle of Richmond. As long as you have common sense and a group of people to walk with when it gets pretty late, you'll be perfectly fine. Just don't be stupid, and you'll be safe.

It is easy to transfer and the process is fair. It is affordable. It offers a wide variety of degree options.

    Tips for prospective students

You should have a clear goal of what you want to pursue; know what major you want to declare. You also need to like urban living and a large college/student body. You will enjoy the Richmond area and there are lots of opportunities to become involved in many aspects of the community and college.

    Academic Rigor

Not very challenging, but you have to be open minded. Don't attend if your easily offended. This college meets the basic requirements and pumps out degrees- it gets the job done. You spend little money with a degree, and can do well enough to be granted into graduate college. But, don't expect a challenge or any deep intellectual stimulation.

    Dorm Life

There are many living options, both co-ed and even sororities and fraternities. They are very flexible and allow changes if your unhappy with your roomie.

    Food and Dining

They have a large vegetarian and vegan population, and therefore have many food options to choose from. The campus is surrounded by restaurants (Chili's on campus) and fast food chains and food marts if your unhappy with campus cafeteria-oh, and there are Starbucks on campus.

    What to do for fun

There is a lot of dining, and lots of local bands play at local venues. There is a huge music scene here, that many are unaware of! There are also many clubs and bars downtown, and they provide a free bus to bring you down and back. There is shopping and boutiques in Cary Town and many historical sites, along with art museums and history museums. Local artwork is featured throughout the city. And if your an outdoor fan, parks are great for biking and skiing is 4 hours away. The basketball games are always fun as well.

    Bang for the buck

SUPER affordable! Great way to start your career without debt! I am not sure if people/business outside of Virginia will care or know about a degree from VCU, if your concerned about name dropping and prestige-than you will probably want to pay lots of money for a different school. But if your on a budget looking to go to graduate school, this works great for you.

    Greek Life

Sororities and fraternities thrive here. Get involved!

VCU is huge, which will allow you to meet a wide variety of people from different social backgrounds. The size also allows you to choose more classes that are interesting to you. The whole atmosphere of the school is fun and exciting: especially the basketball games!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to visit the school before applying. Many people do not realize the size of the school. Coming to visit will allow you to see what life as a VCU student is like. It will also help you if you get accepted. The more you come to visit, the less you will get lost during your first weeks, which will keep you from annoying the upperclassmen.

    Academic Rigor

Overall, VCU's classes are very average when it comes to academic rigor. It all depends on what you are taking.

    Dorm Life

The quality of the dorms depends a lot on which one you are discussing. The ones that I have dealt with personally are Johnson, Cabaniss, and GRC Phase I. Unless you absolutely cannot avoid it, do not live in Johnson. The rooms are way too small, the steps are way too steep, and the stalls in the bathrooms are very short. Cabaniss is my personal favorite. Even though it is on MCV's campus, it is still worth the money. There is only a very short bus ride between campuses and you are only steps away from Jonah's. The best part of Cabaniss is the basement, which has a pool table. GRC Phase I is an alright dorm. However, you may want to buy mouse traps before you come. Several people (including me) have had mice problems.

    Food and Dining

VCU's food and dining services are great. There is a wide variety of places to eat on campus. My personal favorites are ihop and Zoca. The only place to watch out for is Shafer. I have heard many people complain of getting sick after eating there.

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs at VCU. There is also a huge gym on campus. The best thing to do for fun is to go to basketball games. They allow you to cheer your team on and to connect with your fellow Rams.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a new tradition that started in 2010 where during orientation, the new students touch the Ram Horns outside of Commons. After doing so, they make a wish.

    Campus Safety

The one major issue that VCU has is safety. VCU is located in the middle of Richmond and right beside Broad Street. It is definitely not safe to walk around alone at night. Lately (Spring of 2012), there have been a few robberies that have occurred during the day. When at all possible, do not walk around alone. However, VCU does have ERTS phones spread throughout the campus and has a Security Escort Service, which will safely drive you to points around campus (the only problem with this is that it sometimes takes a really long time to get to you, especially if you are going between campuses).

Clubs downtown start as early as Wednesday (College Night) at the Hat Fatory 18+ and Thursday-Saturday 18+ to 21+ anywhere else. Drinks are cheap at the Tobacco Company and nights usually end at Off The Hookah a must see club! Other Activities involve the James River like Bellse Isle Park and Kayaking. the urban campus provides students with many opportunities to enrich their education outside of the classroom. i have found myself challenged and encouraged in my pursuit of a fine arts degree and am very glad that i have had such amazing professors and classes. i did not think this city school was going to be for me at first but it has become a home away from home, and i can honestly say i enjoy going to school and learning every day.

    Tips for prospective students

don't be afraid to dive right into the midst of campus life your first semester. by surrounding myself with like-minded people and exploring different activities that i had not even contemplated before i really managed to open my eyes to everything vcu had to offer. there are tons of opportunities that aren't heavily publicized as well. check out the bulletin boards, student commons, and ask around for interesting events going on around campus. also, i highly recommend visiting the writing center whenever you are working on a paper. the people are very friendly and know exactly what you need to do to make that paper its very best.

    Academic Rigor

having taken several campus at my local community college during high school, i can honestly say that vcu is much more rigorous academically speaking. however, if you stay on top of your assignments and don't put off studying until the week of or the night before a test, you should be fine. however, as a fine arts major, i spend most of my time in the fine arts building. the studio classes are very demanding but have made me challenge myself and push my boundaries on every assignment. it is tough, but it is definitely worth the effort.

    Dorm Life

i have not had the experience of living in the dorms as i commute every day. that being said, i rated it a 3 as it as neutral as i could get.

    Food and Dining

i also do not have a meal plan on campus. i do know, however, that a lot of places around richmond, such as tropical smoothie and starbucks, accept something called rambucks. you can load money onto your student card (that works as your id and a bank card if you want) and use that when you go to get food from select places. it is a good way for you or your parents to control how much money you spend eating out.

    What to do for fun

every first friday of the month there is something called first fridays where many of the galleries around richmond have new opening receptions and invite people to stop by. it is a great to go with a bunch of friends and make a night of gallery-hopping. the student commons also tends to show movies on some of the weekends. the schedule changes every so often i believe but it's cheap if not free to get in and see a relatively new movie on a large screen. again, check out the bulletin boards and read your vcu email for any random opportunities that may pop up. keep and eye and an ear open.

    Bang for the buck

i do not honestly believe that i would have gotten such as good fine arts education for the same amount of money anywhere else. vcu has a top-notch fine arts department but also various others such as engineering, medical studies, and journalism. great for the education earned but also easier on the bank!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there is this event called zombie hunting that happens (i believe) twice a year where any student is welcome to sign up for either the zombie team or the human team. it lasts for a week i think, and every night they will go out and hunt down the other team throughout the streets of richmond. slowly people get eliminated as the game goes on and in the end one side wins.

Great for these types of students

if you love the city and are outgoing, it is a no-brainer that this school is for you. however, that is not saying that if you are introverted and prefer the country or suburbs (like me) that you will not do well. there are so many different groups, activities, and areas of study that virtually anybody will fit in.

    Clubs and Activities

as i was saying earlier in my review, jump into the campus life your first semester. you will feel much more involved if you do so and will be less likely to get overwhelmed. the sovo fair that happens at the end of welcome week of each fall semester is a must to attend for anybody trying to get involved. over 50 of the different groups active at vcu have booths set up and are willing to offer any questions you may have.

    Campus Safety

as a city school, it may not be the safest campus on the earth just by its nature. campus security is always close by, though, and are easy to reach in a pinch if you do need them. there are yellow phones stationed around campus that you are able to use if you need to get in contact with them fast and a shuttle is also available to give you a ride back to your dorm or wherever you need to go when it is dark but you do not feel safe. just be warned it may take a while to arrive so stay inside until it gets there. all in all, use your common sense, do not walk by yourself especially at night, and chances are you will be fine and dandy.

    Am learning a lot

One of the things that I have learned and truly value at VCU is the opportunities to learn not only inside, but outside of the classroom as well. The diversity of the students and staff permit me to learn about different cultures, and political views as well as the curriculum that is taught in the classroom. This learning experience has been very influential, and although I am entering my second semester of my freshman year, I already feel like I am an individual that has changed for the better.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE VCU!! the campus is beautiful, the social and cultural diversity is prevalent, and the people are amazing. In my opinion VCU has the ideal balance of a work hard- play hard environment. Entertainment is always around and there is always something to do but learning and producing active members of society are at the core of this university and I value that tremendously.

    Bang for the buck

The only complaint I have about VCU is the cost. I am an out-of-state student, a product of a single parent home and I maintain a GPA above 3.5; although I am actively searching for scholarships to remain at VCU the fiscal stress that paying for this university has put on my mother is overwhelming and I am afraid that I will not be able to attend another year at a school that I have worked hard at and fell in love with. This in my opinion is extremely unfair.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are out of the state of Virginia i HIGHLY advise you to apply for as many scholarships as possible. Keep an open mind, work hard, and you will be fine.

Great for these types of students

If you are an individual who keeps an open mind, is interested in becoming more social, environmental and politically aware as well as meeting awesome people this is definitely the school for you. I truly believe that after I graduate from VCU I will leave as a truly active educated member of society which will then enable me to bring what I have learned back to my community.

    Am learning a lot

This is my first year at VCU as a Criminal Justice major and let me say for my first semester I have learned a tremendous amount! The professors are very involved and excited about the opportunity to pour their knowledge into the students. When I first came in August 2011 I kept telling myself that there is no way that a professor is going to have time and the patience to meet one on one with a student i needed out of a class of 200 plus students. I was completely wrong! For the first semester I have had the pleasure to meet with each one of my professors to discuss ways that would help me excel in the class. This helped me settle into the academic part of college much easier. I have learned about distant cultures in my human societies and globalization class that I had no idea existed. I have also had the chance to have many open discussions on many great books that have been written in my textual analysis class. I feel as if I have gained a great amount of knowledge in one semester. Virginia Commonwealth University prides itself on being there for the students and faculty and creating a unique learning experience. In VCU doing that I have learned a lot.

    Am enjoying being here

At first I was a little spectacle about attending a college that is in a city environment. Little did I know that there is so much and always something to do at VCU! I have had some of the great times here in Richmond, VA already. I have been on a tour of Richmond, seen Broadway play, and have been to a few museums. There is so much more to do such as canoeing, hiking, watch performances by your favorite artist or band at the National. Having so much to do keeps me occupied and relaxed. Lets not forget about the recreational activities that I have done so far since I've been here! There is intramural sports and plenty of other things to do. There are countless organization that you can be involved with. When I say there's something for everyone, there really is! The Basketball and other athletic events are also another prime reason I enjoy being at VCU. The people are great and the school is great couldn't of made a better choice!

    Bang for the buck

It sure is a Bang for the Buck! The dorms are well kept, the food is good, the buildings are in great standing. Broad street offers the University with name brand food shops and privately owned shops. It gives you the best of both worlds all for a good price that a college student can handle. There isn't anything bad that I could say about VCU! I have had a great experience being here at the university and have met so many people through the programs and events that have been put on by VCU. The programs and academic life are well put together with instructors that are serious about there job!

    Tips for prospective students

The tips I have for prospective students is too come to VCU and visit, vecause some may not handle the city as well as others. Also if you decide to come to VCU, expect to succeed and learned a lot, but all while having fun doing new things with the new friends you will make.

VCU is a wonderful university. The student advisers and professors I have spoken to( that's many) are extremely attentive and do care for the students. VCU offers many degrees and certificates having different fields of study such as art, school of business, engineering, medical, social studies, and many more. The university is always kept clean and taken care of. Currently, more buildings are getting built and this is one of the largest universities in Virginia. Their are constantly new activities in which any student can participate in to help the environment, the school and the well being of others.

I am a returning student this fall and am in love with VCU. I have learned so much here in two semesters. I was an above average student in high school and could have attended more prestigious universities, but decided to go to VCU because it undoubtedly the school for me and it was the only college in my state with the major that I was looking for. The courses at VCU teach you a lot and prepare you well for the job world and upcoming courses. The classes provide enough difficulty to make it worth the students attention and keeps you interested. Not only have I learned academically but I have also learned how to live on my own (in some sort). The dorm life has helped me prepare to live on my own next year. The R.A. and dorm staff help you out with dorm life and living without your parents and with random people your age. VCU advisers teach what you need to know to sign up for courses for the upcoming years. They also help you plan out your courses so you graduate on time and are prepared for your career. VCU has courses for freshmen that help them get acclimated to school and your major. VCU prepares students to be successful and that is evident during your freshman year.

    Am enjoying being here

Simply put I love VCU. What makes VCU so awesome you may ask. The student body is probably the best part of VCU. Everyone at VCU shares this passion for their school. We are all so proud of our school and support it strongly. This is evident at all of VCU's home basketball games. If you happened to watch the NCAA Basketball Tournament then you could not have missed the huge crowds that traveled to Texas to support our team. VCU's campus is well set up and pretty. It takes some time to appreciate the city campus, but it is beautiful. Monroe Park is situated in the middle of campus and provides for a nice place to relax or just hang out. The city campus was a big change for me. I am from a very small rural area. I live in a cabin in the woods and love nature. So the transition from rural countryside to the big city of Richmond was a little scary. I have since then fallen in love with VCU.

    Bang for the buck

VCU is one of the more easily afforded universities in the state of Virginia. Virginia Commonwealth University offers academic scholarships and athletic scholarships. I actually received a partial academic scholarship. VCU wants you to be a student at their university so don't hesitate to apply for the scholarships. Between scholarships, grants, and financial aid VCU is an affordable university. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

My biggest tip for anyone considering VCU is do not count it out. VCU is a great college! The city campus makes VCU what it is. I encourage you to visit VCU and attend their overnight orientation. Talk to current students. Attend some sports events if possible. My biggest tip is to enroll at VCU and you will love college.

Great for these types of students

VCU is great for anyone. I am from the country but there are so many different kinds of people here. VCU will boast Diversity at all their orientations but it is really true. There are people from all parts of the country and world. I am close friends with a guy from Russia. One of the other guys on my dorm floor was from Arizona and came to VCU for art. There are many students from across the globe. VCU fits and accommodates anyone. If you attend VCU you will meet many people and share the love for your university.

Coming to VCU has taught me a lifetime of lessons in just three short years. I had never been away from home for more than a week before going away to school. Although challenging at times, the independence I have gained living here has prepared me for the real world just by the experience. I don't have my parents with me everyday to cater to my every need. I have had to grow up a lot in a short amount of time, and because of that, I am a much better person for it.
I originally came to VCU as a Chemistry major. When I arrived, I discovered that they offered degrees in Forensic Science. I never knew that this was even an option. VCU is the only school in Virgina to offer bachelors and masters degrees in Forensic Science. If I had not come to VCU, I would not have discovered this world of forensics and would still be searching for my future career.
Not only have I gained a greater sense of independence and discovered my future career goal, but I have learned the importance of hard work. At VCU, I have grown tremendously as a scholar. This school has so many programs to assist me academically that the only way to fail is not to try!

    Am enjoying being here

Not only do I truly enjoy attending VCU, I am truly grateful for all of the wonderful connections I have gained while being here. The diversity of the students is incredible. I am the type of person who needs to be stimulated socially as well as academically. There are so many organizations to join and activities to participate in.

    Bang for the buck

VCU is the largest public university in the state. With that being said, its tuition rates are lower than many of the other public institutions in the state. With the tuition, students are able to enjoy to great variety of activities. Free access to the incredible gym, free admission to home basketball games, and free on campus events to name a few.

    Tips for prospective students

Be open minded. There are a lot of different people here. Don't be afraid to try new things. I have gained lifelong friendships because I put myself out there and got to know different people. VCU is in the middle of the city so don't just stay on campus, venture out!

Great for these types of students

VCU is great for students who are interested in medical fields, the arts, business and engineering students and many more. Any one who is open to diversity and new experiences.

The first year at VCU is basically spent on learning basics in general education classes, depending on your major. I enjoyed a lot of the classes I took, especially since I had a lot of options for electives that didn't have to relate directly to my major.

Richmond is definitely a busy place. The VCU campus is never boring and there is always something going on. You'll learn a lot of the local hot spots and fun places to go as you go to VCU. I've been here a year and still haven't seen half of the city.

    Bang for the buck

VCU is cheaper compared to a lot of schools. I find it worth the money. You get a lot of opportunities that most schools don't provide which makes up for the large amount of money it cost to attend this school.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not slack off your first year. It may be hard to adjust to school for the first semester but those grades will stick with you forever. If you feel a class is too hard, drop it. It's way better than getting a low grade and having that stick with you.

Great for these types of students

If you love to experience new things and different people, this school is for you. I've met a lot of different people with different experiences and interests. It has made me a better person, in my opinion. There's never a dull moment at VCU for me, in class and outside of class.

VCU teaches it's students a wide variety of subjects with teachers that are really involved and experts in their specific area. The academics in the university have taught me so much about the world and although you have to study the work is not at all too hard or too overbearing. I can say I am really learning a lot but not only that I enjoy it and being that I was never much of a bookworm that says a lot. VCU isn't just about teaching academics though. VCU has taught me to make a difference in society and to have a voice, which is something that is pushed in the minds of the students there. It's a learning experience like no other.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE VCU. My freshman year at VCU which recently ended was the best school year I have ever had, no exaggeration. I have met so many friends and been exposed to experiences I'll never forget. From welcome week to homecoming week to going to parties and of course making it to the FINAL FOUR this year has been awesome. VCU is a great place to be, it's such a variety of different people of different cultures and walks of life. The college experience is so one of a kind, the school spirit alone cannot be surpassed. RAMNATION!!

    Bang for the buck

The money is worth the education and in comparison to other schools that are of the same quality, it is much cheaper to go to VCU. Tuition pays for bus passes for students, an escort service to get students transported safely late at night. It pays for activities like basketball games and other sporting events, the student health clinic, classes. Then there is room and board which is optional along with dining plans which are also optional if you are not staying in a high rise dorm. Financially it is worth it and there are various plans to help pay off fees.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students I'd say be aware of the Cabell Library and Chegg.com for books because chegg is very cheap and the library has some of the textbooks necessary for class so you don't have to buy them at all. After the semester is over go to Bookholders to sell your books back. For dining there are so many places to go out and eat just be aware of that and know that the dining plan does not roll over to the next semester so use those swipes. If you are not a freshman housing is not promised but there are various affordable apartments all over campus. Another tip would be to walk in groups for safety at night, it is a city environment so be aware of your surroundings and if you do not feel safe you can always call escort or VCU police. The next tip would be to make a schedule that fits you, if you know you are not a morning person aim for classes in the afternoon. Students should see there advisor at least twice a semester and go to the University College as well for S.I. sessions and tutoring sessions. STUDY STUDY STUDY. My last tip would be to go out and have fun. Be apart of the school. Go to games, talent shows or join a club. Have fun, college goes by fast.

Great for these types of students

Students that like an inner city enviornment. Students that like to be envolved. In general the school fits very diverse ranges of people. VCU is a big puzzle where anyone could fit.

I attend VCU for the art school. I've gone through my first year, which was the Foundation Program. The goal of the Art Foundation Program is to turn all of its students into well-rounded artists. I was definitely impressed with all of the things I learned during my Freshman year. I learned: how to paint, how to edit audio and video, how to do sculpture in cardboard, cloth, and various other materials, how to draw in graphite and in charcoal, how to draw still life, figure drawing, what performance art was and how to go about doing it, how to combine mediums successfully, how to critique properly, and much more! As far as the non-art courses go, all I had to take was Focused Inquiry 1 & 2, which is basically English class. I did learn a lot in it though, specifically how to do research and write research papers properly. I know that in high school, it feels like you don't learn very much, but I've learned a lot in college so far.

    Am enjoying being here

VCU is an urban campus, so there's lots to do all of the time. You don't have to leave campus to go out to eat, go shopping, or anything like that. There is also a seemingly unlimited amount of clubs. There's even a pancake club, which I want to join next year, and a Quidditch team for all of you Harry Potter fans. All of my professors have been extremely kind and helpful, along with being very good at explaining things. My advisor has been good with pushing me into the right direction and giving me the correct answers to things when I needed them. Even the food here is pretty good. At our dining hall, they serve a pretty decent selection of vegetarian and vegan food, which I think is amazing. Some of the academic buildings are a little far apart, especially if you're an art student, but I started to really enjoy the exercise I got from walking class to class. Overall, I really love VCU and I couldn't imagine being on a non-urban campus now.

    Bang for the buck

VCU is one of the cheapest schools for both in and out of state tuition. Last year, though, they raised tuition by about 23% and that really set me back. I don't know why VCU is raising tuition by so much at one time, but I'm hoping they don't do it again. If their tuition raises too much, it could cross the line between cheap and average. In state tuition is $5,000 a semester, and they offer payment plans for each semester.

    Tips for prospective students

From what I know, VCU is pretty easy to get in to, but very hard to stay in. You have to be in a mindset of studying and working hard to get good grades. VCU is not a school where you can just slack off and get good grades, anyway. Art school is especially difficult. I know personally at least 10 people who have dropped out in the past year. Study hard, work hard, and you'll have a very successful college career.

Great for these types of students

VCU is great for anyone pursuing any type of art, especially sculpture and photography/film. I also know that it is a great school for any type of science major. VCU also has an amazing music program, especially for vocal performance. I'm not saying that VCU is bad for other majors, it is just a very good school for these in particular.
