    Am learning a lot

    Like most online programs the IT-Database program is very intensive and accelerated. But the program is awesome. I am receiving industry certifications from organizations such as CIW and CompTIA.
    This is the part that really cinched it for me (that and the inexpensive tuition costs)

    The resources available to the students is invaluable, and there are so many it is almost overwhelming, but in a good way.

    I had my Associates degree from another school when I decided to look into WGU. Many of my credits transferred and the tuition is so much more inexpensive than most other colleges (my research was done mostly with online programs) Financial Aid is available through WGU.
    Tips for prospective students

    If you are interested in a Business, Teaching, or IT degree check out the programs with WGU. WGU is based out of Utah, but they have a new campus (opened just last year 2010) in Indiana.
    Students wanting to start the program must apply by the 15th of the month to start the 1st of the next month.

    wgu receives top ratings for online students pursuing a bachelor degree in special education and have found it exhilarating and at times a challenge. i currently work 40 hours per week and find it fits my schedule and has been well worth the time and effort.

    in the last year i have completed over two years of academic studies. i do not have to wait on instructors to slug through knowledge i have already acquired and do not have to race to keep up if it is new material. i have taken state certifications and passed on the first attempt. while waiting for the assessments to start, many of the students from regular colleges were there to retake the test as they had not passed it the first time.

    the location of my campus is any where i want and find time to study that has a wifi connection.

    i am a non-traditional student returning 30 years after high school graduation. i am working a 40 hour per week job and have no difficulty meeting my education deadlines, tasks or testing.

    The great thing about this type of learning is that you go at your own pace. I am a detail orietnted person that can stay focused on a topic easier in this format. If I were to be sitting in a classroom my mind would be wondering around thing of the other tasks I could be accomplishing while I was working on my assignments. This method offers me the ease of running the dishwasher, the laundry and all those other neat things while I am working on my assignments. I get to slice and dice my hours the way I need to.

    Yes very much so! The mentors are great they don't leave you in the lurch wondering how to go about starting classes. The orientation is very easy to understand and you can e-mail or call toll free all the time. My mentor Mike calls me once a week to see that I am on track with my goals. He helps me with classes that I have struggles with and cheers me on when I zoom through others.

    In this economy I can tell you after I received my AA in business I did a better job researching online schools for my BS Degree. I spent a total of 60 hours researching school and had the CEO of the company I work for look over the number before I even considered applying for WGU! WGU is a non-profit university you pay a fixed amount for 6 months and you can take as many class as you can pass in 6 months. You don't have to do that wait for you partner to finish there part of the report stuff!! You are accountable for your work and your grade of your own effort. Get in and out as quickly as you can it is all on you and your abilities.

    Follow what you want to do not what everyone else thinks you should do. You are the one that will be doing this type of work. If your not ready for college don't do it! It will at first break someones heart but not their wallet. Go when you realize how much you want this for your future. It will make a huge different in how you approach learning.

    Self motivators, highly organized, able to find information and research without becoming flustered. BTW my degree in Health Care Informatics is accepted not only nationally but internationally this to me is very important. Best of luck in you endeavors in college.

    Be prepared to study hard and learn a lot! Don't be fooled because it is an online university...this school will challenge you better than some brick and mortar schools! Do not be afraid to ask for help. The course mentors are there to help as well as the student mentors. Pay attention to the posts in the community board as they have a lot of helpful information. Try to attend webinars and do not procrastinate!

    The mentor based approach is very helpful. I can always email my mentor and I usually hear back within a few hours, if not less...even on the weekends.

    I completed 40 credit hours in 6 months!! My background allowed me to accelerate through the classes that I already had knowledge in. I would recommend this school to anyone. Most classes do not require books, they are all online and provided. No matter how many classes you take the cost never goes up.

    i have recently applied and have been accepted as a student at western governors online university. although i do not start classes until march 1, 2012 i am already very impressed with this university. my enrollment counselor, jessica, and my financial aid counselor, kristin, have made this huge change in my life so much less stressful.

    i am so impressed with the tuition costs at western governors university. i am a husband and father of five young children. changing careers is a difficult thing to do especially without a degree. returning to school could be a huge financial burden, but the small tuition at wgu is making it possible for me to return to school and receive my degree.

    This is the least expensive online school I have found. They are accredited. They give awesome transfer credits for classes taken at another facility.

    Make sure that you can give the appropriate amount of time to study weekly. It is a 6 month term and it can be easy to loose track of time and then end up having to really work extra hard to complete the term.

    Western Governors University made it possible for me, as a non-traditional student, with a busy schedule, to go back to school and finish my degree. I started my degree in 2003 at a traditional school, which did not fit around my work and family schedule. Now I am able to study on my time, and still have time for my family and work obligations.

    If you cannot seem to find time to complete your degree, because you can't seem to fit college into your busy family and work schedule, Western Governors University may be for you. If you are comfortable with learning independently, it is great! they also take into account your experience in the field, and prior academic experience to get you through your degree faster.

    If you are looking for an easy A in your classes, and a degree that you didn't work for, then Western Governors University is not the school for you. They require you to actually know the material, and prove your knowledge. There do not require the group work typically found in traditional schools or other online schools, so you are graded on YOUR work, not somebody else's.

    Western Governors University is fully online, so there are no dorms. You work from your home, work, or wherever you have internet access.

    Because Western Governors University is completely online, they do not have a cafeteria. So, the rating of the food and dining is based on where you decide to eat while attending school.

    You can do whatever you want for fun, whenever you want (of course, around your work and family schedule). With Western Governors University being fully online, you study around your schedule, and have fun when you feel like you need a break. As long as you study, and learn the material, you can have all the fun you want in your free time.

    I am a current graduate student at Western Governors University pursuing a Masters of Science degree in nursing. My personal experience has been great and while it has not been a easy road, it has been very rewarding. In my opinion, Western Governors University is a great school and it takes a dedicated student to pursue a full online colleg.

    My personal tips for prospective students are as follows:
    1. Please be dedicated to online classes. They are not easy and APA format essays are a must so please be prepared.
    2. Be honest with the goals you set with your instructors and mentor. They are there to help you. They may not tell you the answers to the proctered exams but they will give you tips to aid one in passing.
    3. Have fun and enjoy your classes and make friends with your fellow students through the communities.

    Study at your own pace, accelerate if you want, online with loads of online resources. No specific time constraints for classes - go by your own schedule. Online tools keep you on track toward your goals. Weekly calls with your mentor to answer questions and guide you on your way.

    The initial week or so is crazy. Try to get a good feel for the website and ask your mentor a lot of questions. There are also mentors specifically for your field of study or class. They are on facebook & twitter for additional sources of communication & help.

    You study at your own pace, but you are not alone. Testing is online or at a testing center (such as Pearson Vue). I was sent a webcam for testing online. It is proctored remotely with the webcam! Certain classes may need a more formal setting and Pearson Vue makes sure you are so you say you are! But, really the flexibility was a huge selling point for me.. and if you have the opportunity to accelerate during a term and add a class... it's at no additional charge!

    I eat from the comfort of my own home. If WGU offers food and dining, I wouldn't know about it. However, I am sure it would be great because everything else is great about WGU.

    WGU affords students the ability to work at their own pace and prove that they know the material. There are no set class times, but there is support from a network of qualified course mentors. It's a great school for motivated, dedicated students.

    Ask yourself if you can truly work on your own, and if you answer that you can, talk to an enrollment counselor. The program is directed, the work is not a joke, and the school is accredited. Be honest in assessing your ability to motivate yourself to do a lot of research and a lot of writing.
    Academic Rigor

    Honestly, I have worked very hard in some courses and others have been a breeze. The challenging courses are not insurmountable. The ones that have been easy for me are subjects that I have either experienced in the real world either through work or social interaction, or just because I love to learn anyway. This is not a boxtop university, but it will be easier for some than others.
    Dorm Life

    There are no dorms, because this school is online. The great thing is that I can work wherever I have internet connection and power. I have converted my dining room into a study and work room, and it is perfect for me. If you are looking for a traditional college experience, this is not it.
    Food and Dining

    Again, this school is all online. As a result, no dining hall. However, I am an excellent cook. And, on days when I am working too much on school to cook dinner, my wonderful family either cooks or brings food home.
    What to do for fun

    Stalk the Taskstream grading system to see if your papers are picked up. No, really. It's like a hobby. They should make Evaluator Trading Cards or something.
    Bang for the buck

    $3,000 for six months. Take as few as 12 CUs (Competency Units) or as many as you can complete. I did 33 the first term and have 22 under my belt in the first 2 months of my second term. Warning: if you don't complete a course by the end of the term, it does show as not passed, so don't get too far ahead of yourself. There is no additional cost for text books (either e-books or real books are included). It is what you make it.

    It's the internet. It's full of unusual.

    No sports. No clubs.
    There are several student-led groups on facebook.
    However, when you enroll, you get a student success kit. It has a giant coffee mug, a t-shirt, a picture frame, a giant box of sticky notes and an excellent pen. Also, at the end of the first term, they sent a flash drive as a gift. That's like a club, right?
    Greek Life

    There's an honor society for students in the Ed program - KDP. I joined, and there are two times a year when they allow applications.

    Now, that depends on where you live, right?
    I, for one, am constantly having my cats steal my post-its and have tripped over my computer cord twice.

    wgu is an excellent option for students who are self-motivated and want a fast track to a good quality education! students can work at a faster pace and since coursework is competency based, you can move ahead quickly if you already know your subject matter!

    make sure that you choose the degree plan that you want in the beginning because you cannot just add or drop a class, you have to complete the entire program or switch to an entirely different program.

    the classes at wgu are hard, they are online and self paced but you have incredible mentors and course mentors who are experts in the subject matter to guide you along and help you when you get stuck!!

    This school is great for those that do not need a traditional classroom setting. The ability to pace yourself at a competency based program is simple the best. Show you can do it, move on!

    Being an Online school, be sure you are self-motivated. The mentor program there helps but they can only do so much to keep you in the program. When you start each term sit down and get the classes done, a min of 12 units in needed to stay full time but if you get 23 done, all the more power to you.

    This is as hard as you make it out to be. Since you are basically following a lesson plan and self teaching most of the work, it becomes really rigorous.

    I do a lot of things with friends, being my classes can be done 24/7. I just need to make sure I plan my time appropriately.

    The Tuition is really inexpensive, compaired to other fully accredited universities. When I am writing this my tutition is about $3,500 per 6 month term. Since each term is work as much work as you can get done, you can get out without much debt or even at $7000 a year, might be able to pay cash for it.

    I am excited to continue my education. I love that WGU is competency based education. As a business owner, there are many areas I am quite familiar with and don't need further instruction in. I can demonstrate my knowledge and move on to the next area of study.

    I have loved working with the mentors! They are quick to respond to my questions and give me guidance. The staff that I have had contact with has all been quite knowledgable.

    I can take as many classes as I want for one price in a six month period! In my first month I have finished the entire first terms requirements!! I love this as my family has struggled since my husband was injured at work four years ago. Low tuition and e-textbooks make this a wonderfully cost effective choice!
